All the fun of the Festival… Jan writes about her quality time with her daughter, Nicolina, at the Bearded Theory Festival last May For a long time I had been wanting to spend some quality time with my daughter, Nicolina, where we could do something really special together and which we would both enjoy. So, when I heard about the Bearded Theory Festival, I thought that this would be the perfect opportunity.

We pitched our tent, surprisingly fairly easily, and we went off to explore the festival area arriving first of all at the Children’s Village and the Angels Garden. There was so much to do we didn’t know where to start but during the course of the 3 days we managed to sample just about everything! The music, however, was of course the main part of the festival and there was something for everyone from The Waterboys and Alabama 3 to X Factor’s Wagner! But the musical entertainment wasn’t the only thing that was interesting.

There were so many varied stalls selling unusual items and the people at the Festival were just as colourful with some people in fancy dress and, as you may expect from the Festival’s name, some wearing beards! The culmination of which was an attempt to break the World Record for the most people wearing beards which took place at 1.00 pm on the Sunday. Whether this was achieved, I am not yet sure. The weekend passed far too quickly and we were sad to pack up our tent and leave. We had enjoyed the music, the activities, the food, the people and had been pleasantly surprised how litter free and surprisingly clean the toilets had been (something quite unique for a Festival of this kind)! It was such a great weekend… and we can’t wait until next year for our special time together once more!

Pottery Beach at Denby is back for a second year for eight weeks with a seaside themed enclosure, lots of safe golden play sand, deckchairs, beach hut shops, free children’s entertainment, other activities including plenty of picnic space for families. It’s free to use for as long as you like everyday between 10am and 4pm. Come along, sit in a deckchair, soak up the sun and watch the kids having fun. On selected weekdays in August there’ll be free beach entertainment from the popular Pinxton Puppets along with Punch and Judy Shows, beach competitions and much more. And if you fancy popping off the beach for a while, the children will enjoy a Denby Pottery Craftroom Tour available daily at 11am, 12pm, 2pm and 3pm where you can find out how the pottery is made then having fun painting on plates and making a clay souvenir (this optional activity is charged at £5.25 for adults and £4.25 for children). Baa’rmy plans for summer Maize Maze The National Forest Adventure Farm has announced plans for this year’s giant maize maze, one of the largest in Europe. The new farm park attraction and maize maze have teamed up with Aardman Animations, the creators of Wallace & Gromit and Shaun the Sheep, to create the world’s first Shaun the Sheep themed maze.

Summer Fashion …when it comes to fashion, the seasons really do change and none more so then the summer months. Here are a few tips to add some fashion must haves to your wardrobe this summer. The silhouettes of the 1950s and 1960s continue to be very strong. Shapes that accentuate curves and femininity. A figure hugging shift dress with a belowthe-knee hem is the ultimate in hourglass dressing. It also flatters a more curvy figure so is great for the majority of British women. Think Marilyn Monroe or Christina Hendricks from the US hit series Mad Men. For a younger look raise the hem line to above the knee, introduce bold colours or try a full circle skirt version. Maxi dresses are still big this season but with a twist. Look for the sheer maxi with details of antique lace or crochet. Another interesting alternative is tail hems, shorter at the front and longer at the back. From hot tropical prints in flowing sheers to one colour jerseys in a slim shift.

Central Community Nursery School Central Community Nursery School opened in 1938 and is Derby’s oldest nursery school. Since 2007 we have been part of West End Children’s Centre which is located on our school site. The School is funded by Derby City Council and the school governing body work in partnership with the Head Teacher and our experienced team of Teachers and Nursery Nurses to provide high quality early years education and care.

Byki is a powerful language learning system that uses flashcards to teach you a set of foreign words or phrases, in a way which
