Special moments when time is precious Maria Hanson, founded the Derbyshire based charity Me and Dee in July 2006. The Me and Dee Charity aims to provide treats for children and adults of any age, with any serious condition, to have a treat to create special moments and lasting memories.
But Maria would love to see more requests from Derby or Derbyshire, she is always on the look out for people from our area to treat. Her treats ( normally of around a value of £100) can be for the person or child nominated or for the whole family.
Her small charity was thrown into the limelight when she agreed to participate in a television documentary called “Who Cares?” On the final day of filming, it was revealed to her that, Paul a gentleman she shared filming with, who had been a Kirsty receives a limo treat child carer, was in fact “A Secret When she has a request, Maria works Millionaire.” After spending time with hard to get more than the value of the Maria, he had chosen her charity to treats, to turn them into something make a donation of £10,000. money can’t buy. Maria, herself is a disabled woman, who will have her 17th major operation later this year and with this in mind Maria is also looking for help. She is looking for enthusiastic, creative, inspirational people who can help her fundraise and raise awareness of the charity in Derby. If you have some time available please contact Maria. Paul the “secret millionaire” will continue to take an active role in the charity, but Maria would love to have more local people involved.

A wonderful day at the Fete Over 4500 visitors came to Shottle Hall Country House Hotel on Sunday 16th May to enjoy local, independent crafts and produce. Over 35 shops and producers, a farmers style market and a children’s activity corner – made a truly wonderful day (and it didn’t rain!) Polly’s corner provided games, bouncy castles, face painting and
stalls full of nostalgia, to put a smile on many little faces. Following on from the success of the summer Fete, Polly’s List are delighted to be teaming up again with www.fabulousplaces.co.uk to bring you an Autumn Fair to remember later this year. Full details can be found below.

How many times have you been put off joining a gym or health club because you know that you will feel uncomfortable and intimidated by your surroundings? The last time I joined a gym, which admittedly was a while ago it was a myriad of cardio busting machinery and weight lifting stations. None of which suited an unfit, self conscious, 40 year old Mum. I persevered, but several sessions later, I began to notice that I was spending more time waiting for the machines to be free than I actually was working out. I felt that I was not being very productive with the time that I had set aside for myself. Most busy mums will recognise that time for ourselves is in short supply and the last thing I wanted to do was waste it on something that was not enjoyable. Inevitably I gave up and was back to square one. In April of this year I was browsing through the spring edition of Polly’s List and noticed an article for The Ladies Club. To be honest it sounded too good to be true, the advert described something that appeared to be perfect for me and I was, to say the least a little skeptical. I made an appointment and although I was still feeling a bit intimidated by my last gym experience I was determined that this one would be different. When I arrived I was greeted by Margaret who is the owner. Why did I worry? She made me feel completely at ease. We chatted and she gave me a brief tour and demonstration of the equipment. The Ladies Club is completely unique just ten user friendly stations and a total session time of 30 minutes. Due to their simple but effective system I have never had to wait more than 3 minutes to start my session. Once you have started you move from station to station until your work out is completed. Genius!.
The next day I went back for my induction and met Deb. She gave me the best mini health check that I have ever been offered at a gym, and was genuinely concerned that the programme she devised would be the best it could be and tailored perfectly to suit my needs. Deb actually suggested two slightly different programmes to be used alternately. This has worked out great as you never get complacent about doing the same exercises all the time. I leave The Ladies Club after each session feeling as I have worked every muscle group and it only takes half an hour. Now I’m being productive with the spare time I have. For the first time, I have found something that fits in with my busy schedule and I attend most mornings after dropping my daughter at school. I see regular faces all the time and any new members are integrated seamlessly. It really doesn’t feel like hard work. (Now that’s something I would have never previously believed about a gym!) I feel healthy and much more confident; what’s more I actually enjoy it. I am due for my first assessment soon, I’m sure Deb will have some new ideas for me to try out. Hopefully I will have the chance to let you know how I get on. Thank you to The Ladies Club for your support and for making me feel like part of your community. Claire Cottom

Space Hop
one giant leap into libraries! Libraries across Derby are running a range of free holiday sessions linking in with Space Hop where children can share in more fun activities including stories, quizzes, IT and crafts. There’s an opportunity to discover more about the science behind Dr Who at our interactive ‘Dr. Who, Time Travel, Space and Aliens’ events. With visits from local author Andy Cope and his dog Lara - inspiration for his popular ‘Spy Dog’ series - and storyteller Fran O’Boyle as Julius Drake Victorian adventurer sharing tales of his expedition to the Moon, there really is something for everyone. Join the Space Hop Summer Reading Challenge running throughout the summer at your local library. Space Hop is open to children and young people aged from four to 12 and offers lots of ideas for some brilliant holiday reading.
The Space Hop mission features three stages – Blast Off! Space Chase and Lunar Landing - and the poster tells the story in comic strip format along with lots of fun activities to do. Children collect stickers as they progress through the challenge and add them to their poster.
Children joining the challenge will receive a special Space Hop membership card to record each level of achievement. They’ll also get a fullcolour fold-out poster featuring the Space Hop crew, whose three-stage challenge to set up the first lunar library is thwarted at every stage by the Spacekatz, a band of sneaky meerkat space pirates.
Children can complete the challenge by reading six or more books and visiting their local library at least three times during the school holidays. They will get a certificate and medal celebrating their achievement and a chance to win a special Space Hop bag of goodies. With prizes to collect on the way, there’s lots of incentive to keep reading throughout the summer.
Contact your local library in Derby or go to www.derby.gov.uk/libraries for dates and further information. Children can sign up to Space Hop at any Derby library from Saturday 3 July 2010. The challenge ends on Saturday 11 September 2010.

It’s more than just football Derby County in the Community DCITC is a registered charity (1123520) that uses the power of Derby County Football Club to improve the lives of the people of Derbyshire through participation in sport. With over 30 highly skilled and motivated full-time staff, Derby County in the Community is one of the biggest and most respected community programmes in the country. We have specific Officers in place for Disability Football, Social Inclusion, Health as well as running the Derby County Centre of Excellence for Girls which is the Football Associations licenced centre for Derbyshire. We deliver a diverse
programme of activities and initiatives that challenge, engage, develop and enthuse participants. All DCITC staff have up to date Enhanced CRB’S (Criminal Record Bureau) and hold the relevant sport specific qualifications as well as first aid and safeguarding children qualifications. Keeping the kids busy this summer As ever this summer we will have fun days and activities happening throughout Derbyshire. In Derby specifically the bulk of our camps will be held at the Powerleague Soccerdome (formerly JJB) on Pride Park. Our fun days run from 8:30am until 3:30pm and present a great value for money provision for parents. The camps cater for children in reception through to year 6 and promote physical activity in a fun and safe nurturing environment. Children participating in our summer programme will have the opportunity to develop their skills, get fitter, make new friends and have lots and lots of fun. We will throughout the summer be running competitions to offer the participants
the chance to win some great DCFC prizes. This summer we have a fantastic incentive to book early with the first 150 summer bookings receiving two tickets to the Derby County versus Birmingham City pre season friendly at Pride Park on Saturday 31st July 2010 kick off 3:00pm. There’s more to DCITC than summer fun We have programmes running 7 days per week in schools, local community venues and sports facilities throughout Derbyshire. Our staff has been up-skilled to deliver multi-skill, tennis, golf, health, basketball and football sessions enabling us to offer parents and children wider opportunities to be physically active. It really couldn’t be easier to come along and join in the fun For more information on any of our programmes or to book on one of this summers camps please call the Community Office on 01332 667575 or visit our new website at www.dcitcommunity.com

Bluebells Prepare for a Busy Summer: INTRODUCING THE MAIZE MEGAMAZE
Bluebells at Brunswood Farm in Spondon, Derbyshire, are preparing for a busy Summer period. Bluebells have a variety of activities planned for children, adults and their regular cafĂŠ customers throughout the Summer season. The star attraction will be a Maize Megamaze that the Brown family have been planting and preparing over the past months to entertain families visiting the farm. The Maize Megamaze has been developed with a circus theme and incorporates the Bluebells logo within the design. Children and adults have been invited to work their way through the Maize Megamaze and try to ďŹ nd the crafty clowns who were mistakenly (or perhaps not!) left behind by the circus. The Brown family have asked for help to rescue the farm from the clowns and send them back to the circus! Quiz sheets are given to every person entering the Maize Megamaze. Parenting Information Smith Partnership
is one of the largest firms within the Midlands and has a specialist family department who have a long history of providing confidential and sympathetic advice to clients. We deal with cases of divorce and separation, emergency injunctions, and residence and contact for children. As family solicitors we also deal with child care proceedings and have a mediation department and collaborative law specialists. At Smith Partnership we can help you resolve your contact disputes and in the event that matters proceed to Court the most common questions and concerns of our clients are: -
51
Q. Will my children stay with me when my relationship comes to an end? A. The attitude of the court generally is that children should stay where they are unless there is a very good reason to move them. The older the child is the more weight the court would give to their wishes and feelings. There is no presumption in favour of mothers over fathers although in the majority of cases where the mother has been the primary carer of the children the Court will conclude that the children should remain in their mother’s care.
principle that regular contact with a child is in their interests.
Q. Is there a rule for how often my ex-partner can see my children? A. No the Court assesses each case on its own merits but there is a general
The Smith Partnership www.smithpartnership.co.uk 01332 225 365
Q. Isn't contact and where my children will live, about my rights? A. No - it is more about your children's rights to have a meaningful relationship and regular contact with both parents Public funding (legal aid) for advice and assistance or representation at Court may be available if you are eligible and a member of our team will be happy to assess your eligibility over the telephone prior to your appointment.
Divorce, Separation, Financial or Childcare disputes? Statistics show that relationships are breaking down at an increasing rate. At such times taking legal advice can seem an intimidating prospect. Smith P Partnership’s artnership’s dedicated specialist F Family amily Law team understand that feeling and provide a friendly friendly,, approachable and professional service. The team also has specialist family mediators. Mediation is an alternative and cost effective method of resolving issues, and helps avoid contested Court poceedings. Jack Rabbits It’s 4.30 am and I have just received an e-mail from Amelia at Jack Rabbits. It’s a little early for me, but it’s entirely normal for Amelia to be up and hard at work at this time of day.
53
Jack Rabbits attends events throughout the county, including the Derbyshire County Show, cookery demonstrations at the Aga shop and Fabulous Places events. They have been asked to provide daily cookery demonstrations at Chatsworth House Country Fair on the 3,4,5 September this year. They continually develop and extend the menu and food.
Perhaps that is why Jack Rabbits has had such a hugely successful first year, growing from a home cooked food deli, Amelia has developed a huge range of So it is no surprise, that Amelia has been to a multi award-winning, diversified pickles, chutneys and sauces, all of which recognised for these achievements, firstly food business. are available at the shop. These are also winning, “ Best Newcomer” at the Derby Food and Drinks When Amelia opened in April 2009, she available to buy as beautiful awards, last autumn. aimed to provide, high quality, extremely hampers, packed full of gorgeous food. tasteful, home cooked meals to the people of Derby. This food would be prepared from the finest local ingredients, by Amelia and the team at Jack Rabbits and would then be chilled and available to buy over the counter for us to take home and enjoy. Jack Rabbits continues to provide this great service, but the demand for the food has surpassed Amelia’s initial expectations. It started when one customer asked if she would provide food for their 40th birthday party, then a firm of solicitors asked if she would provide a buffet for a networking event and since then Amelia has been supplying her fabulous food for parties and functions around the city. Every event is bespoke and Amelia and the team work 7 days a week ensuring that every event is catered for.
Amelia has also written a recipe book, “Forty Nine”, which gives us a 7 weeks worth of fabulous food for us to make ourselves. - I love this book, I bought a copy earlier in the year and can honestly say I regularly make dishes from it, the dishes are easy to make and all of them are family friendly! – you can buy it from Jack Rabbits.
Secondly, recognising her energy, enthusiasm, incredible, work ethics and commitment to success, at the noted East Midlands Woman of Worth awards winning the title of Small Business of the Year” It has been an incredible year, that most people would be satisfied with, but I know Amelia, she doesn’t stop and I can’t help thinking… What’s next?
A lunch menu has been created, including hot roast cobs with fillings that include roast beef, stilton & red onion; chicken, stuffing & cranberry and slow bake ham.

All the lastest information, news and events going on at schools in and around Derby.
Walter Evans PTFA Walter Evans PTFA has enjoyed a fun filled year in 2010, hosting a range of events in conjunction with School. In April we held a ‘W.E. Got Talent’ Show, following a request from a group of Year 5 children who wanted to raise funds for
Water Aid. From magicians to dancers, singers to gymnasts, comedians to martial artists, over 20 acts proved to a packed audience that WE really do have talent! The winners repeated their performances at our Annual May Fair,
which this year had the theme ‘All the Fun of the Fair’. We spent a glorious day in the sunshine, and raised over £4,000 towards new lightweight staging and lights to complement the newly floored School Hall.
Emmanuel School Emmanuel is an independent Christian school at the very heart of Derby. Their vision is to offer a caring environment for boys and girls from 3-13 where they can realise their academic potential and develop into confident young adults. The school promotes a strong supportive community environment where the children are encouraged to play an active role in helping others. In response to excellent academic results, Emmanuel founded their secondary school in 2009 and have seen a great first year.
