The Tinsel and Turkey Tale Christmas bulldozes its way into our lives ever earlier. I let it wash over me and get through it in a haze of gin and chocolate orange. The Turkey I remember the first year my dad cooked the Christmas dinner. We were all starving and he proudly bought the turkey out and began carving it but he kept hitting bone and all we could get off the bird were pretty dismal bits of brown meat. He put it down to the fact it must have been an old bird (those were the days when your employer gave you a turkey at Christmas). Later that afternoon when tradition dictates it’s buffet time (usually an hour after you’ve finished dinner) we flipped the turkey over to see if there was any more meat on the other side - and Turkeys... lo-and-behold two  are related to the T-Rex beautiful plump  sleep in trees breasts and  have periscopic vision enough meat to keep us in turkey  have two stomachs sandwiches for the whole of January!! How you can cook a turkey upside down still baffles me to this day. The Tree Stage One – Getting the tree upright. Gary will spend the best part of a day trying to find the tree stand. Then saw half the trunk and branches off to even get it into the living room. Once the tree is in the stand he will spend another couple of hours levelling it up. Then a dog will knock the tree over. And we’re back to stage one…This is a pattern that repeats itself

every year. So by 8pm he refuses to help with Stage Two - decorating it. Apparently that’s my job! And every year I kid myself that this year I will do better. I pour myself a sherry. Put on the “Now Christmas” CD and begin…lights have to go on first. To say I hate doing it is an understatement. The tree is usually well over 6 foot and I am 5ft 2”. You do the maths. The kids are kind and usually just laugh at my pathetic efforts. The end result is usually me in tears, the tree half done and everyone else in hysterics at my ridiculous behaviour. By midnight I’ve lost interest and just chuck the baubles on any old how and cover every available space with tinsel, vowing “never again”! The Family Get Together Last year it was the turn of my mum to entertain us all. Including our two dogs. What could possibly go wrong? Harry was dressed as a Christmas Tree and Herbie in a Christmas jumper. Hilarious, we thought. Within 5 minutes of arriving it all kicked off. Herbie’s Christmas jumper was hanging off the chickens enclosure (minus said dog) and he was inside with a chicken between his jaws looking a bit perplexed as to what to do next!! Gary spotted him just in time and went into SAS mode. With a phone in one hand and a beer in the other he wrestled the chicken from the dogs clutches. Tense times as we all sat down to dinner. Cracker pulling commenced and Gary had to read his joke out; “Why did the chicken cross the road?”... Merry Christmas everyone! © Ali Wale

The Railway I have eaten at The Railway before so I knew what a treat we were in for. I arrived Friday night with all the NG girls to a packed pub and a very warm welcome. The Railway is a superb village pub, thoughtfully decorated with a great atmosphere. We were shown to our table by Suzannah, the manager. After an appetiser of mixed olives, warm focaccia with balsamic oil and aioli we decided on two starters, four mains and two puddings – just in case our eyes were bigger than our bellies! (As they usually are!) The Cheese on toast, Brie de Meaux on grilled sourdough with pickled mushrooms and truffle dressing (£8.95) was sublime. We all agreed it was our favourite. I have never had anything like it, and that’s why you go out for meals. We also had the Creedy Calver duck liver parfait with English plum relish and chargrilled focaccia (£6.50). The rich parfait married perfectly with the relish. What a start! We all had a different main: the Railway burger with smoked pancetta, mature cheddar, gherkin, gem lettuce and fries (£12.95) was huge! The Creedy Calver duck leg, savoy cabbage, parsnip, duck fat potato and Starkey’s blackberry sauce (£16.95) had us all cooing in awe. It looked so pretty and tasted as good as it looked. Roast chicken breast, peppercorn sauce, fries, roast tomato, mushroom and green salad (£13.95) was a classic dish elevated to a new level and finally the braised shoulder of mutton, balsamic red onion, bok choi, goats cheese and creamed potatoes (£17.50) was the star of the show. Melt in the mouth meat, creamiest potato I have ever eaten, flavours I have never tried together, it was unforgettable. For dessert we had a warm tart of Lowdham quince pear with crème fraiche and spiced honey (£7.95) and hot Tanzanie chocolate

fondant with yoghurt mousse and raspberry sorbet (£7.50) and a last minute treat turned up in the way of a sticky toffee pudding with caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream (£6.95). It is rare that four women are quiet at the same time but the table was silent while we got lost in a chocolate, toffee, pear, creamy heaven! Last time I visited the Railway I gushed about the food and this is still the case. It was faultless and fantastic. The acoustic duo playing in the background was a lovely touch. I would heartily recommend a visit to this award winning pub. Be sure to book though. They are in demand. Since my last visit The Railway has achieved more than owners, David Hage and Mark Osborne had envisioned after winning a hat-trick of awards. Best new Gastro Pub in Nottingham’s Bar & Restaurant Awards, Best Public House in the Nottinghamshire Food & Drink awards and finally East Midlands pub of the Year! They also do a great value set menu available lunch 12-2.30pm and early evening 5-6.30pm.

There is nothing better than receiving a gift that someone has spent time and effort making for you. Every year I make a hamper for my step-dad and he loves it. Usually it includes some fudge (see recipe opposite), chutney, piccalilli, home-made biscuits, jam and last year I also added some chicken liver pate. There is also usually a bottle of something alcoholic. He gives me the basket back after Christmas ready for the following year and the tradition carries on. If you make your edible delights in batches then you will have plenty for everyone and some for yourself as well! It does require a bit of forward planning, so about now I start with the chutney and any pickled

gifts as these need a few weeks before they’re ready to eat. I start saving nice jars and bottles – just sterilise in the dishwasher or use boiling water and dry in a very low oven. Decorate the goodies with pretty labels, use festive gift bags and pretty packaging. Lakeland have loads of great ideas and Wilko’s also have a good selection. All the recipes I have shared are tried and tested and really easy to make (I don’t do complicated!). Have fun and remember to save some for yourself!!!

Blackberry and Apple Gin

Chocolate Orange Fudge

Chorizo Jam

600g blackberries 600g sugar 600g apples (roughly chopped, peel, core & all) 3 x bay leafs 3 x 700ml cheap gin ( we used Aldi) 3 x large kilner jars - sterilised

350g dark chocolate - broken into squares 397g tin condensed milk 25g butter 1 tbsp orange zest (about 2 x oranges) 60g pecans - broken (optional)

500g chorizo – sliced into half moons 2 x red onions – sliced 2 garlic cloves – crushed 85g light muscovado sugar 3 tbsp sherry 2 tbsp maple syrup 2 tsp soya sauce 2 tbsp tomato puree 100ml water

Method: In each kilner jar place 200g of blackberries, apples and sugar. Add a bay leaf to each jar along with a whole bottle of gin. Seal the jars and shake to mix. Place them in a cool, dark place and shake every few days. They should be ready after 4 weeks. Have some nice gift bottles at the ready (sterilised). Pass the gin through muslin to strain and bottle.

Method: Butter a foil tray. Mine was 25cm x 14cm. In a saucepan, melt the chocolate, condensed milk and butter on a low heat. Stir often. When melted, add orange zest and nuts, if using. Mix well and pour into the foil tray. Smooth over and leave to cool. Once cool, refrigerate. Once set, cut into small squares. You can put the fudge in gift bags or jars. Remember to store in the fridge. Can be frozen and eaten straight from the freezer.

Fry chorizo in a large saucepan until it starts to release oil and goes golden. Remove with a slotted spoon to a dish and set aside. Cook the onions gently in the chorizo oil over a low heat until soft. Add the garlic, sugar, sherry, syrup, soy sauce and tomato puree to the pan along with the chorizo. Mix well and add the water. Cook slowly for 45 mins until thick and syrupy. Allow to cool. Tip into a food processor. Pulse until the chorizo is in really small pieces. Spoon into sterilised jars and leave to cool completely before storing in the fridge.

Gedling District Round Table Santa Sleigh Ready For Action! It won't be long until the Christmas spirit is upon us all. Gedling District Round Table (GDRT) will be out this December with Santa, his helpers and sleigh, to visit as many local children as they can, handing out sweets and Christmas cheer. With the help of local groups (such as the fantastic members of 1st Porchester and 4th Carlton scouting groups and Gedling Southbank Football Teams) the members of GDRT collect every year, whatever the weather, for local charities and groups supporting children and adults alike. Subject to change, Santa and his sleigh will be in Lady Bay Retail Park and Netherfield Retail Park, as well as street routes near Spring Lane (Gedling), Cavendish/ Coningswath Rd (Carlton), Digby Rd/ Shelford Rd (Mapperley/Gedling), Porchester Gardens (Mapperley) and, of course, after our tremendous reception last year….Netherfield! Please keep an eye on our FB page : Gedling and District Round Table 1290 (@GedlingRT), to see the dates and routes Santa's sleigh is taking. We look forward to seeing you and and thank you for your continued support with our community projects. If you fancy joining one of the largest clubs in the world, we are always seeking new members. Men aged 18-40 are welcome. Feel free to have a look on our FB page and the Round Table website to see what we are all about, or email us for more info: GedlingRT@gmail. com

kids Santa's Helpers Rewarded with Division 1 Win! Its that time of year again when Santa starts his rounds...

Last year saw Gedling Southbank Athletic U10 boys (now U11) help the Gedling and District RoundTable Santa sleigh to raise over £370 in one night! The boys loved working together as a team and supporting the RoundTable to raise much needed funds. As sponsors of GSB the Gedling and District RoundTable were able to provide

professional looking tracksuits for GSB Athletic U10 to attend their Division 1 Champions presentation, at the Royal Concert Hall, and the boys were thrilled! Manager Anthony Thatcher said "We thank the Gedling and District RoundTable for all their support of the team and club, we are happy to keep supporting them to raise even more funds for other great causes this year. Myself and the parents are thrilled with all the hard work the boys put in as a team and it paid off with the Division 1 Title!”

What dads really want for Christmas Unbelievably, Christmas is just around the corner. At the time of writing there are no mince pies in the shops and I haven’t had to dodge past the wrapping paper selections in the supermarket. But have no fear, it’ll be here quicker than an express train of sugar-filled children excited by the possibilities of getting everything they’ve asked Santa for. But the question remains “what do dads really want for Christmas”? Significant others take note, this year the usual half-baked selection of socks, razors, golf tees and a set of craft ales in a presentation box isn’t going to cut it. I’ve done the leg work, asked some dads, and this is what they want:

1. Time in the bathroom without interruption. I’m going to let you all into a secret, dads go to the toilet to escape the kids. And at Christmas maybe even your family. We don’t have irritable bowel, we’re probably just catching up on the football scores. Unfortunately we’ve been rumbled by the kids who, as soon as dad is ensconced on the porcelain throne, come knocking. “Are you in there”? “Will you be long”? “Are you having a number one or a number two”?

2. A Lego kit that stays together. I was never massively into Lego as a child, but I always enjoyed it when I got a chance to play. Nowadays my house resembles a warehouse of the stuff. There are kits everywhere. Most of them are in a varying state of repair. If I built Lego without children I imagine I’d have a great collection, probably fully built, and definitely with the right parts. So when the kids decide they want to rebuild some stuff do you think we can find that one piece in the assortment of bits? You know the piece, the smallest and most vital one. The one that has to be in grey and absolutely can’t be substituted for a different colour.

3. The Great Escape Actually, this should read ‘any film that dad really wants to watch’. We’re not asking for much, just a couple of hours to watch a film where there’s no-one constantly asking who that person is, what’s going on, and all manner of

questions that are stopping you enjoying the actual film. And ideally this should be alone. Let’s be honest, if we can watch the film alone then no-one else will decide they’re bored halfway through and demand everyone stops watching. And if we’re alone we don’t have to worry about whether the film is suitable for everyone in the family, and watch Steve McQueen attempt to jump the barbed wire (because I always think he’ll make it!).

4. Sleep This is quite straightforward: a night of proper shut-eye. The sort of sleep where you don’t hit the sack with one eye open. Where you don’t get woken at 4 in the morning by a child who has decided now is the time to be awake. Where you don’t race out of bed having heard your child scream only to find them fast asleep and tucked up safely in their room, unlike you. The sort of sleep where you don’t feel guilty for having a lie-in. This may be the best gift anyone could give.

If you’ve read this and still think we want something from a shop trust us, we really don’t. If we wanted anything that badly we’d have probably bought it ourselves already this year. And the consensus is don’t buy us clothes. We know you mean well, but you might as well ask our mothers to buy them for us.

Edging into my forties, I’m a wrangler of two young children who are either going to keep me eternally young or drive me to an early grave. I’ll be sharing some of my experiences of parenthood and my terrible attempts at staying relevant!

Built on a former riding school and farm, Yorkshire Wildlife Park, commonly referred to as YWP, has come a long way since it first opened its doors in April 2009. A dynamic centre for conservation and welfare, the park has over 400 animals and over 70 different species of animal.A magical atmosphere will surround the park this Christmas, where visitors can get almost face to face with some of the world's most beautiful and endangered animals, including Tigers, Amur Leopards, African lions, and the country's only Polar Bears. So why not invite the whole family to get involved in the festive fun this year at the award-winning YWP?

Their ever-popular Christmas Fairs are lined up for families and children to enjoy this December, all in an enchanting walkthrough safari adventure. Held over two action-packed weekends on the 8-9th and 15-16th of December, the fairs are the perfect way to get into the festive spirit. A fully heated marquee will be home to hundreds of lively stalls which will offer arts and crafts, delicious food and drink and personalised gifts. The park will come alive with entertainment, live music and Father Christmas welcoming everyone into his Grotto. Children will be greeted by a Christmas Elf and write a letter for Father Christmas, before entering the grotto to hand deliver their note to Santa's cuddly Polar Bear helper. So come and join a full cast of Christmas characters in the 100-acre park, at Branton, near Doncaster spreading the season's goodwill.

ristmas h C e r fo e B e e Nightmar h T : s w ie v rossover C Bur tonRe l a n o s a e AS With Christmas imminent, and the spooky trick or treat palooza of Halloween done and dusted, what better way to celebrate than a festive movie that mixes the two holidays into one strange, mesmerising and explosive cocktail. Ever get so good at your job it’s now boring? Well that is exactly how Jack Skeleton, the king of Halloween Town, feels. That is until Jack discovers a set of portals to other mystical worlds. The first one he sets his bony fingers on is Christmas Town, and Jack becomes enamoured with its bright festive cheer and gleeful warmth. But Jack doesn’t just want to enjoy this town, he wants to be the king of it too. And so begins his quest to give Santa a well-earned break and become the jolly man in red himself. Originally released in 1994, every frame of this movie looks like a whimsical piece of art. The Nightmare Before Christmas was made before the glut of CGI that we enjoy today, making the beautiful stop motion animation even more impressive. At its heart, as well as being a Christmas film, The Nightmare Before Christmas is a musical, and a great one at that. From the infectiously fun Halloween Town opening, to the iconic glee of Jack discovering Christmas for the first time, each song seamlessly fits into the story, and will have even the most jaded viewer tapping their toes. What makes this film stand out from the other Christmas animated musicals is how innovative the concept is. Dropping Halloween and Christmas into a blender and seeing what comes out is a joy to see and gives everyone something to love. Having such a strange mix up really allows producer Tim Burton’s style to shine. From imagination sparking concepts like the two faced mayor to seeing a werewolf come to life in this style, the artistic direction of this movie is spellbinding.

Don’t let the Halloween atmosphere fool you though, The Nightmare Before Christmas is still full of that magical warmth that comes with every Christmas movie ever made. Moonlit romance, buckets full of joy that fill your eyes with happy tears and a valuable life lesson to be learned, Jack Skeleton’s antics have it all. Overall, The Nightmare Before Christmas is a spectacular celebration of all things Halloween and Christmas. Capturing the joy that comes with the mistletoed holiday perfectly through its energetic up-beat musical numbers and displaying the shudder-inducing frights of that spooky October night through its uniquely iconic character designs; the balancing act done by this movie is a blast to enjoy again and again, on an annual cycle even, say once a year, every December. Don’t settle for a diet plan health instead

A Snack A Day

The build up to Christmas is a truly magical time. From the decorations to the chill in the air and the happy family times, there is a lot that the month of December has going for it. Perhaps the pinnacle is the food, the glorious, rich food, that can be enjoyed without guilt, because, well, let’s face it, it’s Christmas and what else is Christmas for? And, thick Christmas jumpers hide all manner of food related sins! There is one work-related habit, however, that can make staying healthier during the festive season a lot easier: paying attention to snacking. As tempting as it is to buy that giant tub of **** (insert Christmas themed chocolate/biscuits/ sweets here), to treat the rest of your colleagues, consider the manner in which they will be consumed. If we are honest with ourselves, the majority of snacking is sheer boredom. “I’m bored of this spreadsheet, pass me a biscuit.” “Crunchy crisps will add interest to the next 20 emails that I have to send.” “I need a break, chocolate will signify that I’m having a break.” That inner self-talk is so faint, we don’t even notice why we are snacking but it’s evident that physiologically we don’t actually need extra food to fuel several more hours of sitting down. Similarly, the odd Christmas biscuit might be nice but the benefit of it is limited. Well, that’s if you view unnecessary weight gain as a benefit. If you can’t go without that snack or really want to treat your work mates, there are other ways. Snacking healthier has a fair few advantages, and before you stop reading, I’m not talking about fruit.

With the rise of food trends such as “eating clean” and “lean in 15”, nutrition is fast becoming a hot topic. PROGRAMME BUILDING We all have the capability to write ourselves a little home or gym-based training programme but the first question we often get asked is where or how do I start? There are a few things we advise you to consider if you choose to tackle this challenge yourself. To help you we have provided some guidance so hopefully you achieve much better results, a little faster. You will also now have some basic knowledge to implement into your training.

Muscle Selection As a rule of thumb, if muscle growth is your aim, hit each muscle group twice weekly. Yes, twice! Studies have shown this is the optimum amount for growth. Some people respond well to three targeted sessions, especially on lacking areas. If time is the issue, full body push, pull routines work well or push, pull and legs, then repeat this protocol.

This is how long you should take to do 1 rep or an entire set. Let’s keep this simple, aim for 40-60 seconds, as this is the ideal window for muscle growth. Yes, that means slowing things down a little and controlling what you are lifting.

Muscle selection should be kept balanced. Try to hit a muscle in each direction it contracts at least once a week to maintain balance. Don’t stop training a muscle in one specific lift like a shoulder press because you may be advanced in to focus on the weaker movement for example, a lateral raise. The press still needs to be included to attain balance, just focus more on the lateral raise to improve the weaker movement.

Rest Periods

Too Much?

TUT – Time Under Tension

If you’re looking to build strength, 2-5 minutes between heavy sets, 30-120 seconds for muscle growth. The idea for growth is to keep the intensity high and the muscle under stimulation as much as possible.

Reps and Sets For strength building programming, you want to keep reps under 8 and sets under 6 as an ideal. A common block you will see is 5 x 5, 5 x 3 and 5 x 2, then your 1 rep max efforts. With body building, it’s usually between 8-16 reps (or more for high volume work), 3-6 sets. As a guide, if you choose lower reps you’d generally choose higher sets to fill out the volume needed to progress. An example here is the common 3 x 10 most perform. Consider the TUT, aiming for 40 seconds or more and you’ll see positive improvements. For strength work, focus more on connecting with the movement and explosiveness of the movement.

If all of this seems a lot to take in, Strength and Physique have an academy that helps guide, educate, support and deliver sustainable results.

Tanya About Town T

he countdown to Christmas is well and truly upon us here in Nottingham.

Make sure you don’t miss the wonderful atmosphere of the Winter Wonderland which continues in the Market Square right through until 31st and pantomime season is already well under way at the Nottingham Playhouse. Their annual traditional pantomime, which this year is Robin Hood & The Babes in the Wood runs through until 19th January. This year the Theatre Royal welcome Joe Pasquale and John Challis for their offering of Peter Pan, which runs from 8th December until 13th January. There’s even a special Peter Pan talk on the 10th with afternoon tea. You can catch Sleeping Beauty at the Thoresby Riding Hall between 23 - 30th December, while this year you can banish those post Christmas blues with a visit to Elf the Musical, Starring David Essex and Martine McCutcheon at the Motorpoint Arena 28-30 December. Prefer to be involved? Don’t miss the Maggie’s Christmas Concert at St Barnabas Cathedral on 13th December. Sing your favourite carols whilst raising money for a fantastic charity. The Nottingham Harmonic also bring their family carol concert to the Royal Concert Hall 19 - 22 December or why not have a good old sing song at The Southbank Bar with their Christmas Eve singalong between 1-7pm.

There’s a whole host of fantastic music throughout December as the Royal Concert Hall welcomes Katie Melua (3), Human League (5), The Bootleg Beatles (6), The Overtones (15), A West End Christmas (20) and Kate Rusby (21). Not to be outdone, The Motorpoint Arena opens its doors to The Stepback 90’s Concert (6), War of the Worlds (7) Def Leopard (8) Madness (13) and Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas is You Tour (9) There are sack full’s of other Christmas events across the region. Join the Santa run at Sconce Park in Newark (9 December) in aid of Reach Learning and the Great Central Railway has the closest thing you’ll get to the Polar Express with their Santa Service, running 1 - 24 December. Foodies can enjoy a festive afternoon tea at Debbie Bryan or up their game for this Christmas dinner with a one-day pate and terrine course at The School of Artisan Food. This hands-on course will give you the skills, knowledge and confidence to make your own delicious pates and terrines to enjoy. Finally, don’t miss the opportunity to pick up some unique gifts at Ye Old Victorian Market in Kirkby in Ashfield on 15 December.

10 Things You Need To Know About Fitted Wardrobes Is your wardrobe bursting at the seams? clothes, shoes, handbags and anything else you can squeeze in there...if so, you need fitted wardrobes! • Built in wardrobes maximize space, allow for customization and instantly create more space and can be built to fit most spaces. • Consider a bespoke furniture company who can offer a range of standard products coupled with a bespoke service, so they will be able to design and build wardrobes to fit any space. • Fitted wardrobes are an investment. You can’t take them with you if you move. However, if you do decide to sell, purchasers are likely to pay a premium for homes with built in storage. • Choose a company that will manage the work from concept to completion. This will avoid costly mistakes and stress. Reputable companies will offer a free design service. If the company has their own fitting teams, even better. • Think about how you need your wardrobe/s fitting out. Make sure you choose a company that offers the right range of options for your needs. Do you need drawers, shelves, integral media devices, TV’s, desks, dressing tables, lighting, hanging rails or pull out shelving? A company that offers a design service will be able to offer advice. •

• Think about the size and shape of your bedroom when you start the design process. Sliding or bi-fold doors might be an option. Mirrored doors create the illusion of a larger room and provide a full-length mirror without taking up valuable floor space. Take the dimensions of your room with you when you visit the showroom. • Wardrobes should be fitted onto a hard floor, not carpet. If wardrobes are fitted onto carpet there can be movement over time as the carpet settles which will undoubtedly affect the look of the wardrobes. • Ask for recommendations, testimonials and to see previous projects. Ask lots of questions, look for on-line reviews and case studies. Visit the showroom and if possible visit the home of someone who has previously used the company. • Fitted wardrobes are something that will be in your home for a long time. Think carefully about colour. Classic, timeless colours will last for many years and adapt to different styles and décor. • Think about the preparation of your room. If you are planning to decorate the walls, you may wish to do this prior to the new wardrobes being fitted and have any new carpets fitted after installation.

TAROSCOPES Air signs- Libra, Aquarius, Gemini (Eight of Wands, Nine of Coins, Seven of Cups) Long term plans change. New news is going to fly in thick and fast, impacting your plans for the future (in an amazingly GOOD way). What you’ve only dreamed of, up to now, is about to manifest in your real life. Are you ready? Hope so, this is going to be great!

Earth signs- Capricorn, Virgo, Taurus (The Emperor, Eight of Swords, The Wheel of Fortune)

You can make a significant change. Your powers of resolve and intent are peaking, so use them to make an important change in an area of your life you’ve long considered. This move will have a transformational impact across your wider lifestyle, in positive and lasting ways. There’s nothing to fear, and everything to hope for. Get to it!

Fire signs- Leo, Aries, Sagittarius

Water signs- Cancer, Pisces, Scorpio

(Three of Swords, Strength, The Magician)

(Seven of Swords, Four of Coins,

Phoenix from the flames.

Three of Swords)

What was once a painful event or memory gives rise to new resolve and intention. You feel like doing something purely for you, using your own skills and resources, and enjoying the rewards from it. You’re about to take control and create something new in your life, which will more than replace what was lost.

If in doubt, play it safe. You’re always protective about those you love, and things you care about. And this quality will be necessary this month. Exercise prudence and caution, guard your own interests and, if in doubt, play it safe. What you have is worth having, so look after it well. Your life is prospering.

Did you know that Nottinghamshire Police has a front counter at Carlton Fire Station? Following the closure of Carlton Police Station in June 2017, our front counter has re-located to the reception at Carlton Fire Station. Here you can report incidents and receive advice from our friendly and helpful staff, as an alternative to calling the 101 number. Remember, in an emergency you should always call 999. The counter is open as follows: Monday to Friday – 10am to 6pm (closed for lunch between 2-2.40pm) Saturday and Sunday – CLOSED

Christmas shopping...

PCSO James Hrycaj 07788 038759

Stay alert and be aware of what’s going on around you. Keep valuables in inside pockets of clothing or bags.

PCSO Antonia Proudley 07595 074218

Only carry the cash and cards that you need. Always shield the PIN pad when entering your PIN.

PCSO Stuart Webb 07595 074162

Avoid going back to your car to leave your shopping part-way through your trip. If you have to keep presents in the car, make sure they are out of view in the boot, the car is locked, and keep the receipts with you.

St Ann’s Ward PCSO Michelle Kent 07702 141842 PCSO Emily Raymond 07815 576998 PCSO Joe Riley 07894 402983

Shopping with children? Make sure they learn to go to a store attendant or security guard if you get separated. How can I keep my home safe? Don’t leave presents under your Christmas tree if they are visible from windows or doors.

Deter pickpockets and muggers. Keep purses, wallets, phones and keys close (inside your front trouser pocket or inside your coat) and never leave your bags unattended. When you’re out for the evening? • NEVER leave your things unattended. • Make sure someone knows where you are going and when you’ll be home. • Avoid walking home alone and never with someone you don’t know well. • Drink responsibly, arrange for a member of your group to be a designated driver. • Check your taxi drivers ID and never get into an unlicensed taxi. A local animal rescue charity is repeating its urgent appeal to find cat fosterers – can you help? Animal Accident Rescue Unit still has so many cats in its care, that it needs more feline fosterers. With no premises, all the rescued animals are fostered in volunteers’ own homes. Fostering costs are covered by the charity through donations, so if you can offer a cosy home and care for a cat or kitten until rehoming, the rescue would like to hear from you. Some relevant experience, patience and commonsense are all that are needed. The fostered cats must be kept indoors for safety, and a pre-foster homecheck is always done. Plenty of practical support and advice, are also given by the charity. If you live in or around Nottingham and want to help a cat – or more - like lovely ginger boy Alvin (pictured), contact Animal Accident Rescue Unit on admin@ aaru.org.uk, or leave a message with your details on 0115-9321555 and you will get a reply as soon as possible. All animals waiting for permanent homes are at www.animalaccident.org.uk , and at ‘Animal Accident Rescue Unit’ on Facebook.

a helping hand Mental Health Awareness by Helen Jones

Drive for Volunteer Drivers We are looking to build our team of volunteer drivers, therefore, if you like driving and have a few hours to spare and you want to make a difference to the lives of those with lifelimiting illness, why not become one of our volunteer drivers? We are looking for volunteer drivers to bring patients to the Woodborough Road centre for day care services from various locations in Nottinghamshire. Volunteer Services Development Manager Sarah Rice says: “Our drivers are often the first person our patients meet in the morning and the last person they see after their day with us at the Hospice. “For some patients their first visit may be an anxious time, so a friendly face and understanding attitude from the driver puts them at ease. For some the journey may be their only trip out of the house for the week, so the driver becomes a regular part of someone’s life.” Most of our drivers make a commitment of at least once a week, however this can be flexible and it’s up to you how much help you offer. Volunteers need to have been driving for three years or more with no more than three points on their licence. Drivers receive a mileage allowance of 45p per mile, and full training will be given. If you or anyone you know could provide a couple of hours to help patients get from door to door with us at the Hospice, we would love to hear from you.

I was thinking about subjects to write about for the magazine – various options sprung to mind which would be appropriate for the winter edition of the publication. But then in the space of a few weeks I heard of two young adults who ended their lives. It upset me dreadfully that these individuals felt that there was no other option to alleviate whatever pain they were in. Mental health issues aren’t visible ….it’s very difficult to know who’s suffering especially in the workplace where relationships sometimes don’t progress beyond basic friendly overtures. I read a wonderful book recently ‘ Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine’ by Gail Honeyman where the main character holds down a responsible job (even being promoted and progressed within the organisation) but her reality is that she goes home every night to an empty flat. And she has no relationships whatsoever outside of work. Just because someone appears ‘completely fine’ doesn’t mean they are. How many of us can say that we know our work colleagues really well? Maybe there isn’t a culture within your workplace of promoting friendships? Modern life is very stressful for lots of reasons. There are times where we have lots to do and think about, or don’t have much control over what happens or there’s the feelings we get when we have demands placed on us that we find difficult to cope with. In these situations it’s easy to become isolated and feel overwhelmed. MIND, the charity for mental health awareness, has some useful information on their website to help identify symptoms of stress. It’s so important that employees feel they can speak out without fear of reprisals or discrimination if they are suffering. It just takes a moment and a little kindness to check in on our colleagues and make sure everything is ok. The following organisations have telephone helplines for anyone who needs to talk: MIND 0300 123 3393 Samaritans 116 123 SANE 0300 304 7000

Guide Dogs local mobility team is looking for a Volunteer Administrator in Nottingham, who can give a few hours a week to provide support to the charity’s My Guide service. My Guide is a free and flexible service that helps people with sight loss to get out of their home, build confidence and take part in social and leisure activities, using a trained volunteer as a sighted guide. Anyone interested in the role will need to demonstrate good communication and IT skills and be able to commit to a minimum of three hours a week. The role is based at the Nottingham office, where you will have the opportunity to meet people, learn new skills and become an integral part of the local team. My Guide volunteer, Kay explains: “Last year, I applied to be a My Guide volunteer and I am now a lead volunteer for the service. My role is varied and I am involved with training and administration, which involves talking to clients, volunteers and members of the public. I can highly recommend My Guide to anyone who is looking to volunteer.”

The service is currently available to people living across Nottingham City, Mansfield, Ashfield, Newark and Sherwood and has recently been launched in Broxtowe, Gedling and Rushcliffe. This service is delivered by a team of specially trained volunteers who provide confidential one-to-one support. Trained volunteers can offer emotional support which may include a chat over a cup of tea or the phone, or practical support such as help with shopping or going out to a café. We work closely with clinical teams to ensure that any individual who is referred to the Beyond Diagnosis service is well supported throughout their time accessing the service. Crown of Light by Bob Massey

On the 19th December 1935, the audience assembled at St Jude’s church hall in Mapperley were entertained with a performance of a play called the Crown of Light. The play centred on the events of the first Christmas. It commenced with the arrival at Bethlehem and the offer of a stable for accommodation. It continued through to the call by the angel to the shepherds on the hills. It concluded with the arrival of the three kings at the stable. All the proceeds were to support the Girls Friendly Society White Horse Social Centre in South East London. The show had a cast of 30 girls who were all members of the Daybrook branch of the Girls Friendly Society.

Friendly Societies were formed at the start of the industrial revolution when people left their village homes to work in the new factories that were springing up in the towns all over the country. Up until this time the family or village had supported its working people in times of trouble. With this new population shift this support network was no longer available. Trades people started to band together for mutual support to replace the help they would have received from their family or village. Girls were moving away from their homes and villages and living alone in a strange town for the first time. Some fell into poverty and resorted to prostitution and crime in order to survive. Organisations were set up to help these girls who had fallen victim to the dark side of urban living.

The Girls’ Friendly Society (GFS) was established on January 1st 1875, aiming to provide friendship and support for the growing numbers of working-class country girls who were leaving home to take up employment in towns and cities. It was formed by Mary Elizabeth Townsend, an Irish clergyman’s daughter and wife of artist Frederick Townsend. After Frederick inherited Honington Hall, Mary helped in the work of the local girls’ orphanage and became aware of the problems faced by girls going into domestic service. This included loss of contact with their families and unwanted pregnancies which resulted in dismissal. After assisting in some ‘rescue work’ among ‘fallen women’ she came to the conclusion that prevention would be much better than cure. The idea at the heart of the GFS was that the working-class girls could be befriended and guided by higher-class ‘lady’ associates, what we would call mentors today. At the beginning the girls could join the GFS from the age of 12 up to adults but from 1882 those from the age of 8 could now join. Originally all members were required to be members of the church and of unblemished character. Both members and associates paid an annual subscription. This first idea lead to branches being formed all around the country including the one in Daybrook and in Arnold. The GFS went on to provide residential homes and all forms of social help and assistance for the vulnerable young women. The motto of the society is “bear one another’s burdens”. The GFS is still operating today and it is now a worldwide organisation, embracing people from all cultural and religious backgrounds.

I am researching the history of Mapperley and would be very pleased to hear from anyone with more details or information. Email: bob.m.massey@gmail. com or post via NG5 magazine.
