Home of the Seasiders

LOCAL derbies have always been one of the most exciting elements of grassroots football.

Looking back over the years, clashes between clubs like Lyme and Axminster have produced some of the most exciting games and always attracted huge crowds. Tempers have often flared but quickly forgotten over a beer in the clubhouse afterwards.

Every club has a few characters that are forever etched on our memories. On a train journey once to see the FA Cup final I sat opposite someone whom I vaguely remembered. Suddenly he said: “Did you use to play for Slime Regis? How’s that b*****d Richard Austin." It was Ernie Morgan, hard man of the Perry Street League!

The one thing we miss most about playing in Devon and Exeter League is that there are few real local derbies these days. Whilst in the Perry Street League we had some titan scuffles with Axminster, Seaton and Beer during a period when we rarely missed a season without winning some silverware.

Axminster have now moved to the giddy heights of the South West Peninsular League (one level below the Western League) and Beer Albion are in the Devon League. Our closest rivals now in D & E Premier is against Colyton who have been one of our bogey sides for many season.

Today we welcome the players and officials of Sidmouth Town Reserves to the Davey Fort for a Devon and Exeter Premier Division fixture with our Firsts. The Vikings are placed one position behind us in the table so it should be a close affair.

After the game we will be drawing the winners in our Easter Draw, organised by our Ladies Group whose fundraising efforts are keeping the club financially stable.

FIRST TEAM

Our last game – a fortnight ago –was a disappointing defeat against Kentisbeare.

It was always going to be tough going down there with such a depleted squad, we had six or seven missing from our normal side and on the day we didn’t have quite enough.

Full credit to the opposition – they’re third in the league for a reason, but we still felt we should’ve done better and went away with plenty of regrets to stew on.

Straight back on the horse this week and a chance to put things right as we welcome Kentisbeare in the return leg immediately… interesting scheduling from the league! Great to have options again with players returning, which’ll naturally help depth in the Ressies too.

Both the 1sts and the Ressies have five games left this season now. Wally and I just want the lads to rally together and see the season through to the end with a strong finish – it’s not in Lyme’s nature to have this little to play for at the business end of the season, but there’s still plenty of pride at stake and a chance to finish as high as possible.

Up the Seasiders!

My Favourite Football Memory

As a player I could (understandably) never get past club legend left back Rodney Rowe and get a regular run out in the first team, so my playing memories are confined to the Ressies.

I remember captaining the side at 18 for half a dozen games, times were tough and we were struggling, but we had a massive future star amongst our ranks in Phil Everett who of course went on to become a national non-league star with Tiverton Town.

But two games, five or six seasons later stick out for me, and one of those featured another talented player in teenager James Owen. James was on the wrong end of a terrible tackle and suffered a broken leg against our rivals Chard United who used to rock up stinking of cider.

It suited Chard, who we were neck-and-neck with for the PSL Division Three title, to call the game off and head to the bar, but we wanted retribution and proceeded to run the dirty b*stards off their feet and stormed to 6-0 win on our way to a treble winning campaign.

The following season we were 100% robbed by a bent referee in the Dorset Minor Cup semi-final away at Weymouth-based Tudor Paving. At that time no PSL side had ever won the trophy but we felt we had a decent chance of reaching the final and were the better side, but a series of baffling decisions – including a defender who dived full length of the goal line to tip the ball round the post - saw us unjustly beaten 3-2.

It turns out waiting for us in the final would have been another of our old foes in Halstock who, like Chard United, were from the middle ages!

Fun times which seemed to flash by in an instant.”

News from our Youth Section

Lyme Regis Under 11s 10 - 0 Teignmouth Under 11s

TEN is the magic number for the little Seasiders as they put on a great performance at Anning Road against a travelling Teignmouth.

With a new member added to the coaching team, and a change in formation over the last couple of weeks, the boy’s got to work straight away, They were soon on the front foot, with a new partnership up front, and they showed great link-ups between all the players and being more confident in playing from the back and showing

great strength in a wider midfield.

A big shout out for Seth Buller, the birthday boy, scoring a cracking freekick to make his day extra special.

All the boy’s played so well today we couldn’t pick a man-of-the-match so we had Team of The Day as the game finished with a 10-0 win, the goals coming from Josh Fowler (5), Rory Galvin (2), Marley Rawlins, Seth Buller and an own goal.

A big thanks to Mark Bailey for refereeing the game.

12
The Under 11s celebrate their biggest ever win with a rousing chorus of Happy Birthday for Seth Buller.
