WELCOME St Neots Golf Club, Cambridgeshire’s oldest established golf club, was founded on 26th October 1890 when a group of seven local golfers were given permission to play on the Common. We are fortunate to still have copies of the minutes of the meetings that formed the constitution and rules of the club and these can be viewed in the club entrance foyer.

4 | St. Neots Golf Club

We are a club run by the members for the members with many of the old club traditions being retained. However, we also recognise the changing requirements of people looking to enter the game and try to provide a relaxed and friendly atmosphere in which golfers and nongolfer alike can enjoy the facilities. Club matches and competitions take place during the summer months, and these are supplemented with events organised by our seniors and our ladies sections, whilst our juniors section caters for the needs of our younger golfers. Our diary

throughout the year provides ample opportunity for newcomers to meet new golfing colleagues both by playing and through the many social events. The course remained on the Common until 1912 when, following complaints from the Commons Rights Commissioners that golf was being played on a Sunday, a new 9 hole course, designed by Harry Vardon, was laid out on Crosshall Farm and has been our home ever since. Over the years it has seen many changes, the major one being the addition of a further 9 holes in 1968 when land to the north

of the River Kym was purchased making a modern tree-lined parkland course situated at the junction of the rivers Ouse and Kym. Over the years the club has acquired many fine trophies for both men and ladies competitions, some of which go back to before the First World War. These trophies we proudly display in the clubhouse and are played for and presented annually. The current clubhouse was constructed in stages between 1982 and 1987 and

provides excellent facilities for both golfers and non-golfers alike. We provide full bar facilities overlooking the 18th green for those golfers wishing to finish their day in the traditional way and an extensive bar menu is also available if required. Excellent dining facilities are provided in our upstairs restaurant which also caters for non-golfing events such parties, christenings, wedding receptions and wakes. Societies are also welcome and details of our packages can be found on our website.

We welcome all potential members regardless of ability. Our membership schemes, details of which may be found on our website or by contacting our Club Manager, are tailored to fit all levels and you will be more than welcome into, what we hope you will find, is a friendly and enjoyable Members Club. History St Neots Golf Club was Cambridgeshire’s first established golf club, having been founded on 26th October 1890 when a group of golfers were given permission to play on the common. The first annual subscription was just ten shillings (50p).

St Neots became a modern but mature 18-hole parkland course in 1966 after the club purchased land north of the River Kym. The current clubhouse was constructed in stages between 1982 and 1987.

We moved to our current home in 1912 when a 9-hole golf course was designed and built by the legendary Harry Vardon, a former winner of six Open Championships and a founder member of the Professional Golfers Association.

For further information on the club please refer to the book written by G A Walker (former club Secretary) titled “St Neots Golf Club The First 100 Years”.

The St Neots Golf Club badge is derived from the design of The Alfred Jewel, an exceptional example of Anglo-Saxon jewellery discovered in the West Country in 1693. St Neot lived in Cornwall in the ninth century and at some point villagers from Eynesbury stole the bones of St Neot and brought them to a Priory where St Neots now stands. The jewel features the face of someone that some believe is St Neot.

About the Course This picturesque course nestles on the banks of the Rivers Kym and Great Ouse and undulates enough to be interesting without being too physically demanding.

In addition to the riverside holes there are a number of ponds that attract varied wildlife as well as the occasional white ball.

Much of the course is set on a hill with delightful views over the river meadows and across the town.

It has a lot of established trees as you would expect from the oldest golf club in Cambridgeshire. In the spring this means there are spectacular displays of blossom, in the summer members help themselves to the cherries that grow on trees around the course and, in the autumn, the thousand shades of gold are much admired.

While at 6,087 yards St Neots is not a long course, it is widely recognised as being challenging for the better player while not intimidating to those beginning their golf.

The other great thing about St Neots is that if you fancy a change, members are also able to play for free or for a nominal fee, at more than 30 other courses. Many of these are within 20 miles but there are others right across the UK. And, if the weather puts you off, there is the chance of a drink at the discounted bar or even try the two full-sized snooker tables.

Hole-by-Hole Guide If you have never played at St Neots Golf Club before you are in for a treat. Make the most of your trip by learning about some of the pitfalls that lie in wait and how to avoid them as you follow our hole-by-hole tour. • Hole 1 – Par 4, 373 yards A tough opening tee shot with out of bounds down the right hand side. Players should try to get the ball to the left to allow a clear shot to the green. Anything right will be blocked out by the large oak tree. A medium iron to a green that slopes away from you so try to land the ball short of the flag.

10 | St. Neots Golf Club

• Hole 2 - Par 4, 409 yards A straight drive is required to avoid the small pond on the right hand side. This will leave a long iron to a fairly open green that slopes towards you. A 4 on this hole is always a good start to your round.

• Hole 3 - Par 4, 346 Yards A dogleg to the left. Club selection is key off the tee. Players are looking to finish between 190 – 230 yards to have a clear shot at the green. Try to avoid the pond on the right hand side off the fairway. Take too much club and the river awaits at the end of the fairway. The approach shot requires accuracy. With a two tier green and the great river Ouse on the right, anything wayward can add up to a big score on this hole.

• Hole 4 - Par 3, 166 Yards The green slopes hard from back to front so getting it to the flag can be difficult. The hole is fairly open so the wind makes club selection tricky. There is a bunker short left and a small pond to the right catches anything drifting on the wind.

• Hole 5 - Par 5, 528 Yards A very demanding tee shot with trees both left and right. Try to favour the right side of the fairway to make the second easier. A lay up should leave a nice easy wedge for the third. The green is protected by bunkers left and right. A good chance to score here.

• Hole 6 - Par 4, 355 Yards A sharp dogleg hole from left to right means club selection is key. Tee shots finishing on the left hand side will open up a second shot to the green. A fairly long green with bunkers left and right for the approach shot. Out of bounds is lurking a few yards left of the green.

St. Neots Golf Club | 11

Hole-by-Hole Guide CONTINUED • Hole 7 - Par 4, 429 Yards The toughest hole on the course. Not only long but with trees both left and right, all the way down the hole. Even after a good tee shot on the right half the fairway leaves a lengthy approach to a large green that has bunkers guarding the entrance both left and right. A four here is a great score.

12 | St. Neots Golf Club

• Hole 8 - Par 3, 143 Yards This is the signature hole at St Neots Golf Club. A demanding short Par 3 that plays across the River Kym. The wind always swirls here making club selection very difficult. The green has a tier at the front and has two large bunkers on the left. Anything left is very hard to get up and down. Make a par here and move on.

• Hole 9 - Par 4, 305 Yards Although short, this Par 4 plays longer than its yardage due to a fairly steep hill. A very tight tee shot so players should drop down to a fairway wood for accuracy. Avoid the two fairway bunkers up the left hand side and a good birdie chance with a short approach shot. The green slopes hard from back to front so anything long will require a good 2 putt. Know your wedges.

• Hole 10 - Par 4, 352 Yards This fairly gentle hole drifts round to the left, so tee shots are better on the right hand side. Not a long hole so a medium iron to a very flat green. Bunkers left and right but a good chance to improve your score here.

• Hole 11 - Par 4, 365 Yards Again, accuracy is key on this hole. Tall poplar trees line the right side of the fairway, so players need to keep left. Once on the fairway the approach to the green needs to be straight as the green is very narrow. Anything right will kick away from the green.

• Hole 12 - Par 4, 309 Yards A tricky short Par 4 with a blind tee shot. An iron off the tee is required here to make sure you hit the fairway. The line off the tee is the last tall poplar tree in the distance. Only a short iron to a green that slopes from right to left. A good chance here if played sensibly.

Hole-by-Hole Guide CONTINUED • Hole 13 - Par 3, 215 Yards The longest Par 3 on the course which normally requires a wood for most players. There is out of bounds left which will catch anything pulled on this hole. The green has a bunker on the right side and is fairly flat at the front but anything past the middle will catch a slope and will probably go off the back.

• Hole 14 - Par 5, 477 Yards The second of only two Par 5’s on the course. A good chance to improve your score here. Players should feel they can open their shoulders with the tee shot. The two mounds in the distance are the line off the tee. Just be careful as anything really wayward left of the tee is the practice ground which is out of bounds. A fairway wood second shot should leave a wedge to the green. The green slopes left to right so try and land the approach shot left of the flag. This could set up a good birdie chance.

• Hole 15 - Par 4, 420 Yards A tough hole that requires a long tee shot that favours the right hand side of the fairway. Only the long hitters will get to the corner and be able to see the green. The approach will be a long iron or wood to a very undulating green that slopes away with three large contours, which means getting close to the flag can prove very difficult.

Hole-by-Hole Guide CONTINUED • Hole 16 - Par 3, 198 Yards A tough hole where Par is a good score. The green is large and slopes right to left guarded by many bunkers. Miss the green left and the ball will kick down into the Great River Ouse.

• Hole 17 - Par 4, 335 Yards A short Par 4 that plays uphill but hit the fairway and you will be presented with a real birdie chance. The approach shot should only require a short iron meaning a great chance to improve your score. The green is fairly flat but is guarded by five bunkers.

Hole 18 - Par 4, 362 Yards An accurate tee shot is required as there are trees right and left of the fairway. Miss the fairway and you will find it hard to reach the green. Players should use the clubhouse as a good line off the tee. Long hitters need to be aware that there is a ditch 260 yards from the tee so it is recommended that they use an iron or fairway wood. A large bunker protects the green which has many undulations. With out of bound down the left of the hole, this could make or ruin your round.

St. Neots Golf Club | 17

Societies St Neots offers a warm welcome to all golfers and sets up perfectly for societies, both on and off the course. Pre-round you can enjoy a free bucket of balls at the range, work on your pitching at our bespoke practice hole, warm up in the practice net or simply have a putt to get you ready for the day. Nearest the Pin and Longest Drive are great competitions for any society day and the picturesque 8th hole, across the River Ouse, provides a challenging nearest the pin option.

18 | St. Neots Golf Club

For longest drive there are various options but we would recommend the 18th. Even if you are not scoring well on the day, this hole offers a chance for all. As the fairway narrows towards the clubhouse it puts a premium on accuracy as well as length. Off the course the clubhouse provides a superb view of the 18th green. The bar, the patio and the upstairs balcony give great vantage points to watch your friends finish their rounds whilst you enjoy a welldeserved drink.

We provide a range of catering options to suit your needs, from coffee and bacon rolls on arrival to a three course evening meal – our chef can tailor your day as you require. Prices starts from just £27 per person, the minimum number for a society is eight and we offer one free place for every society with 20 or more players.

Ladies Members at St Neots Golf Club enjoy a full programme of golf throughout the year, with fixtures against local clubs, together with competitions to be enjoyed along with fellow members, some for silverware and some of a more social nature. There is always something to suit your handicap, age and golfing desire and at St Neots you will certainly not be short of playing opportunities. Ladies The Ladies have been an established part of St Neots Golf Club since 1892 and it

28 | St. Neots Golf Club

is recorded that they have managed their own competitions since 1906. Along with the longevity of the Ladies Section, there is a long history of St Neots’ ladies winning many of the county’s prestigious golf trophies including the Jean Wilkinson, Grace Norman and the Mary Cole Rose Bowl. They are still contended for with enthusiasm and determination today. We encourage new members to enter competitions and have ladies willing to mark cards for ladies without handicaps. On the other hand, we have ladies who just want to go out, play golf and don’t want

the pressure of competitions, and many of these ladies enjoy our Senior Ladies Section, the roll-ups and fun competitions that are organised. Nine-hole competitions are also organised for those who find eighteen holes a struggle. These nine-hole competitions can also count towards attaining and maintaining an official handicap. It is with this sense of history we are very proud of our ladies section but, at the same time, are not afraid to make changes and keep up with current trends. Come and see what we have to offer – you won’t be disappointed.

SENIORS If you are 55 or over then the Seniors section is open to you. We are a well supported and busy section with about 100 members and we roll up every Tuesday and Thursday. Entry forms are available on the club’s website and you are guaranteed a friendly welcome regardless of your golfing abilities.

We have a full fixture list and currently play home and away matches against 16 other clubs. The format is 4 ball better ball played off the yellow tees, followed by lunch and although it is nice to win, it is equally as important to enjoy the comradeship of Seniors golf.

We hold regular competitions during the year which range from medal rounds to fun games with prizes presented at various lunches held throughout the season. Once a year we go away for three days to a destination chosen by the Seniors Captain. During the winter months we keep active with eclectics and knock outs and hold our celebrated Pie Days. So if you are a Senior golfer then join the Seniors section, you will not regret it!

Learning to Play Learning to play golf can be quite a daunting task – even for those who play other sports. Although it looks pretty straightforward (the ball isn’t moving as you try to hit it) striking it in just the right way can be a challenge and a little frustrating at first. However, the rewards make it worthwhile. Golf is truly for everyone – there are few other sports where grandparents, parents and teenagers can actually play a competitive game together. And getting out in the open and enjoying a picturesque course like

St Neots is rewarding in its own right. So, whether you are someone interested in taking up a new sport or your children would like to try golf, then St Neots has something for you. Entering a golf club is sometimes intimidating but St Neots prides itself on being friendly and, while there are dress codes, that is not something to worry about when you first come to visit. If you come into the office or visit the Pro Shop, there will be someone to advise you how take your first steps.

St Neots runs introductory courses for people to learn the game either on their own or in groups. As you progress, the club has a variety of practice facilities to help you improve and our PGA Professional, Paul Toyer, is very experienced in teaching at all levels. So, whether you are a youngster or someone considering migrating from another more physically demanding sport, why not visit us to find out more.

Competitions At St Neots Golf Club we pride ourselves on the wide variety of options we have for enjoying your golf, whether you are male, female, senior or junior, there’s always something for you to join in.

For the men, if it’s a friendly game with your mates you’re after, then you’ll fit in well, as this form of golf is the culture of our club. However, if you’re also the competitive type then we offer a wide variety of competitions to suit, including monthly medals, plenty of cup and trophy competitions, summer and winter knockouts, singles, pairs, and team events, and we even run a midweek medal to help you maintain or improve your handicap. Club matches, on a home and away basis, offer a great opportunity for team bonding both on and off the course.

Naturally ladies and juniors have their own medals, trophies and competitions, along with matches against other golf clubs, and there are a number of club trophies and competitions that are open to all members. There are two other fundamentals which we hold dear to enjoying our game of golf. The first of these is that we encourage all our members to maintain an “active” playing handicap, and the second one is that we all find the time to enjoy an after-game drink in the bar!
