his Summer issue marks the first anniversary for myself as Editor of the Derby magazine. It really has been a fantastic year which has brought 4 very busy editions as well as a new look website. A big thank you to all of the readers and advertisers for your continued support.

On Saturday 8th June Lots for Tots joined Sight Support Derbyshire for their annual Duck Race. We sponsored and decorated a duck to support this great charity and although we didn’t win we had great fun in the process.
This Summer see’s the launch of Lots for Tots Nottingham. Nadine and I would like to welcome the newest franchisee, Sarah Little, who will be the Editor of the Nottingham magazine. 14-15,000 copies will be distributed to parents around the South Nottinghamshire area.
You will now be able to pick up a copy of Lots for Tots in our local Mothercare at the Wyvern Retail Park in Derby. Mothercare also run Mother & Baby events so look out for details in future issues, on our website and also on the Lots for Tots Derby Facebook page: www.facebook.com/LotsForTotsDerby I was excited to receive a call recently from a Producer from ITV News Westminster. The lady asked for Lots for Tots help in gathering together a group of working and stay at home Mums to meet a very senior member of the Cabinet. The visit was postponed but we will be helping again shortly when a new date is confirmed. We were very pleased that they thought of Lots for Tots! Nadine, the Managing Director of Lots for Tots Ltd brought us another brilliant Bump to Five show. This was the shows 4th year and The Gateway Centre at the Derbyshire County Cricket Ground was a great venue. Thank you to everyone who attended and to all of the stall

New play equipment in Markeaton Park provides the opportunity for children of all abilities to play together
B
rilliant new play equipment has been installed in time for Summer at the Mundy Play Centre in Markeaton Park. Having opened at the end of May this new equipment consists of a large ship which will be accessible to children of all abilities, including those in wheelchairs. The cost of the project was £140,000 and was funded using a grant by the Children and Young People Directorate. The decision to install the inclusive play equipment came following a consultation with parents and carers of disabled
children who expressed how important it is for children with disabilities to be able to play alongside able bodied siblings and friends. Councillor Martin Rawson, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “I know that Children’s services are proud to have funded this major new facility, which will further enhance the attraction of Markeaton Park and see more families with disabled children visiting the park.”

A Flying start for 2 year olds...
Did you know that eligible families can now take up to 15 hours per week of free childcare?
You may be eligible to claim a free place for your child if you receive one or more of the following: • Income Support (IS) • Income-based Job Seekers’ Allowance (JSA) • Employment Support Allowance (ESA) • National Asylum Support Service (NASS) • Pension Credit • Child Tax Credit where income is £16,190 or less and you are not entitled to claim Working Tax Credit • or the child is looked after by Derby City Council. When is my child entitled to a free place? If you are eligible for a free two year old place then you can claim this the term after your child turns two and this finishes at the end of the term in which your child turns three. Three year olds can then claim their three and four year old 15 hours of early education. How do I know my child will be well looked after? Many parents worry how their children will be looked after, the free places will only be available from childcare providers who have been assessed by Derby City Council as delivering high quality care for two year olds – a list of local childcare providers will be sent to all eligible families following a successful application. How do I get a free place? To find out if you are eligible just ring the Families Information Service on 01332 642610 or 642609. It is best to do this in the term before your child turns 2 years old as before that we can not confirm your eligibility. I
love baby yoga, since introducing it to Derby six years ago it has continued to bloom and grow and I am now delighted to see it has gone from being an activity that raised eyebrows to one that most baby’s experience. The ability to observe parent and baby developing in both their confidence and bonding is truly a joy to behold. Baby Yoga usually starts when babies are aged between 8-12 weeks and I have often heard mum’s saying how they really could have used some extra support in the first couple of months before they get to my class. Regardless of whether pregnancy has been easy or not, the early weeks and months create a foundation that has far reaching benefits for parents and children later in life - building a foundation on confident nurturing practices. Most parents have not had experience of caring for babies until they have their own, and while it is often said that babies don’t come with a manual, it is nevertheless true that we can feel a little bit at sea when our babies finally arrive. In order to offer this extra support and to equip parents with the skills to respond to their new babies in positive ways as well as helping mothers nurture themselves, I now offer a new service called Baby Nurture.
