HAPPY NEW YEAR TO OUR READERS

A HAPPY New Year to all Look Local readers and customers! Whether you live in the local area or an online reader elsewhere in the world, we thank you for your continued support. We look forward to 2018 now but we also reflect on 2017, a year which gave us so many unique stories in the local area.

There are too many to mention here but we can touch on just a few. We had Deepcar man Stan Shaw receive a BEM Medal from the Queen back in January – Sheffield’s last ‘little mester’ still making world class pocket knives at the age of 91. Soon after, Oughtibridge man Ged Jenkins-Omar found his way into the Guinness Book of World

Records with the world’s smallest mobile nightclub and Penistone dad Matt Coyne found fame with his Man V Baby blog and top-selling book. Former Stocksbridge Park Steels striker Scott Hogan made the headlines as he made a £12 million move to Aston Villa and the Tour de York-

shire came thundering through the area, thrilling crowds in Penistone and finishing at Fox Valley. Here’s to the New Year and lots more fantastic stories!

JEAN HITS THE BIG 100

Penistone firefighters attend tragic house blaze CREWS from both Penistone and Tankersley fire stations were involved in a callout in which a Barnsley man died in a fire in his home. Firefighters were called to the incident on Clarendon Street at 9:31pm on New Year’s Day. Upon arrival, firefighters wearing breathing apparatus found the ground floor of the mid-terraced property well alight. The male occupant, believed to be in his 60s, has unfortunately died following the fire. An extensive multi-agency investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the fire and death will now take place.

Archaeologists uncover lost history of Sheffield’s medieval castle ARCHAEOLOGISTS at the University of Sheffield have uncovered the forgotten history of one of northern England’s most significant medieval castles. The study, led by Professor John Moreland, Professor Dawn Hadley and Dr Gareth Dean from the University of Sheffield’s Department of Archaeology, in collaboration with Museums Sheffield and archaeological specialists in the city, has found new evidence for the history of Sheffield Castle – in the vaults of Weston Park museum.

Also, a team of University of Sheffield archaeologists, architects and computer scientists, in partnership with creative agency Human Studio, have been awarded funding to develop a virtual reality experience of Sheffield Castle. Findings from the research on Sheffield Castle are also being fed into undergraduate teaching modules for archaeology students at the University of Sheffield to demonstrate how archaeology can help us to understand the past and build for the future.

Built in Sheffield in the late 11th or early 12th century, the castle played an important role in English history. Mary Queen of Scots, who was regarded by many as the rightful Queen of England, was held prisoner there for more than 10 years, between 1570 and 1584, before she was executed in 1587.

It was home to some of the great families of the time, the Furnivals, Nevils, Shrewsburys and Howards, and Cardinal Wolsey (Archbishop of York, Lord Chancellor and chief adviser to Henry VIII), is likely to have stayed there in 1530. The castle was a Royalist stronghold during the English Civil War until it fell to Parliamentary forces on 11 August 1644. Its strength and importance were such that Parliament felt the need to eliminate the threat it posed, and, in 1646, ordered its demolition. Earlier excavations on the site of the castle, particularly those carried out in the 1920s and 1950s, remain largely unpublished but yielded a great number of finds and records which have been conserved in the City’s museum collections. Funded by a legacy donation from Sheffield Archaeology alumnus Pamela Staunton, University researchers together with local archaeological specialists have for the first time studied in detail the finds from those excavations – and are gaining important new insights into life in Sheffield, and in the castle, in the middle ages. The University of Sheffield-led research team now believes that the creation of the castle was accompanied by the development of a planned town, whose streets still form the core of Sheffield city centre. The earliest finds from the 20th-century excavations date from the 11th or 12th centuries, and consist of pottery from kilns in Lincolnshire. By the later middle ages some of the castle’s pottery was made in kilns in Sheffield itself, though some was being imported from the Low Countries. Some of the finds bring us very close to the people of Sheffield – a cobbler dumped waste leather and old shoes into the castle’s moat where they survived to provide us with unique insights into Sheffield fashions in footwear from the 15th to the 17th century. Professor John Moreland from the University of Sheffield’s Department of Archaeology, and Chair of the University’s Castlegate Steering Group, said: “Sheffield is known for steel production and its rich industrial heritage, but its roots lie in the middle ages. If it wasn’t for its demolition following the Civil War, Sheffield’s skyline might still be dominated by its castle. “When people think about castles from medieval England they tend to think of Lincoln or Pontefract. We hope that our work, and the new excavations due to commence in the Spring of 2018, will make them think of Sheffield instead! As well as helping to highlight Sheffield’s medieval heritage, academics from the University are working closely with Sheffield City Council and the Friends of Sheffield Castle – a voluntary group who work to protect and promote the castle site – to use that heritage to help the regeneration of Castlegate, the city’s historic but run-down former heart. As a first step, students from the University of Sheffield’s School of Architecture have submitted designs to the City Council for the construction of a temporary ‘Great Pier’ – to attract visitors to the area and to provide a viewing platform to give the people of Sheffield the best possible view of the new excavations.

Slimmers achieved their weightloss dreams this New Year!

Danielle before and after her dramatic weight loss LOCAL slimming groups in S35 and S36 are looking forward to a Happy New Year after losing a combined weight of 510 stone as part of a challenge to slim down.

HAPPY FIRST BIRTHDAY TO XPERT TRAVEL XPERT Travel in Hoyland town centre celebrated their first birthday on December 28 2017. This independent travel agency has had a very successful first year of trading and Denise, Lorraine and Liz are pleased to have had the support of many loyal customers, as well as welcoming new ones from the local areas and further afield.

Package Holidays, Tailor Made Itineraries, Cruises, Flights, UK Holidays, Coach Holidays, Travel Insurance.

This success has made it possible to recruit another very experienced travel consultant Anne Gallagher to join the team from a well known High Street agency in Barnsley. Local resident Anne has brought with her a wealth of knowledge about destinations as she has travelled extensively during her many years of working in travel.

The challenge was part of a campaign called Believe…in a Slimming World Christmas, which ran across all 16,000 Slimming World groups in the UK and Ireland. It aimed to help the organisation’s 900,000 members enjoy their best Christmas and New Year ever and show everyone that it’s possible to lose weight with Slimming World, whatever the time of year.

Since opening last year we have booked holidays to many diverse destinations as well as arranging traditional package holidays, city breaks and cruises. They also arrange car hire, car parking at ports and airports as well as airport lounges and travel insurance. Director Denise Simpson said: “All the team at Xpert Travel are delighted by the positive feedback they have received, resulting in many customers recommending friends and families to book holidays with us. “We at Xpert Travel are a managed service partner of Barrhead Travel and have access to many exclusive deals which means our customers have full financial protection if they book with us.

Members of the 11 local Slimming World groups dreamed of a light Christmas and a great start to 2018 when they embarked on their seasonal slim 12 weeks ago. And now their winter weight-loss wishes have come true.

Over 90 years of Experience in the Travel Industry

“Whatever your budget, the friendly staff at Xpert Travel will be more than happy to help you find the perfect trip. There’s no hard sell and you’ll always receive friendly customer service and honest advice.”

Based in the heart of Hoyland at 20 High Street, Hoyland, Barnsley S74 9AB

Tel: 01226 982083

The slimmers in the local groups launched the campaign in October and set themselves mini targets to achieve by December 25. Now they’ve thrown a Christmas cracker of a bash to celebrate their success in achieving their goals and staying on track throughout the festive period. Donna Cutts, who runs the Stocksbridge groups, says she’s ex-

tremely proud of all of the slimmers. “In October we asked everyone to think about what they wanted to achieve by Christmas – what would be the best Christmas gift they could give to themselves this year – and write it on a special gift tag. “Everyone’s wishes were different, from weightloss targets like losing a stone or reaching their target weight to other ‘non-scale victories’ such as fitting into a certain outfit, being able to do something with their family for the first time or feeling good about themselves. Whatever it was it reminded members how important their weight loss was to them and helped to keep them focused throughout the run up to Christmas.” Janice Fieldsend, who runs the Penistone groups, added: “The weeks leading up to Christmas are extremely busy for most of us, extra occasions and commitments can play havoc with our regular routines making it harder than ever to manage our weight. Keeping active when the dark, cold nights close in can be a challenge too. Each week in our group we shared recipes, advice and ideas for coping with potential pitfalls, from Christmas parties to shopping trips, and, by

sharing ideas and keeping each other motivated, members at the Penistone group have been able to stay on track and reach their goals.” Danielle Cardwell from the Stocksbridge group joined just before at the start of the Christmas wishes campaign in September 2017 and she has lost an impressive two-and-a-half stone in that time. She said: “I love Christmas and New Year and I was determined not to have another year of feeling uncomfortable and out of place at family gatherings and parties with friends. I can’t believe how different I feel, in such a short space of time and I haven’t had to do anything drastic either, just make small easy changes to my eating and activity levels. I’ve learned how to make healthy choices and I know I’ve got the tools to help me be slim for life, so I’m confident I’ll be able to keep it up throughout 2018 and beyond, I’m so excited about what next year has in store for me.” Another member who made her wish come true is Gemma Chambers a target member from High Green who has lost 5.5 stone in 52 weeks at Slimming World. She said: “2017 has been a special year for me, not only did I get to my chosen goal

weight, I represented my group at the regional finals of Woman of the Year and even though I am where I want to be with my weight loss, making my Christmas wish, to stay at the weight I am now and not revert back to my old eating and drinking habits has been invaluable to me. Making my wish reminded me that you don’t have to miss out on anything, I had an all-inclusive holiday to the Caribbean in November, but I knew with the help and support at Slimming World I could enjoy it and stay in control. “It was the same when I came home I was confident I could have fun in the run up to Christmas and it not affect my weight and I have found it’s been really enjoyable too – I wouldn’t be without my new friends at group each week now. I feel happier, healthier and full of confidence – it’s the best new start I could have given myself for the New Year!” To find your local Slimming World group please see our advert on page 14 of Look Local, we have groups Monday to Saturday in the local area. Anyone’s welcome, new members can simply pop along or call the relevant consultant for more information.

THE Steel Valley Project has received the news that their recent application for the ‘Tesco Bags of Help’ scheme has been successful, meaning that their Green Woodland Community Project in Oughtibridge is being put forward to a customer vote in three Tesco stores during January and February 2018. Tesco customers will receive a blue token (remember to ask for one) and are invited to vote for who they think should take away the top grant.

Difficult access up many steep steps in Sensicall Park currently restricts lots of users from being able to fully enjoy the green space here, which is abundant with native plants, birds, trees and insects.

Kate Hughes, Environmental Project Officer, said: “Please vote for us when shopping at the three Tesco Express stores closest to Oughtibridge to help us secure the top place. Thank you for your support, we couldn’t do this without your help.”

The Green Woodland Community Project offers local people a unique opportunity to help improve the infrastructure for public access within the steep woodland of Sensicall Park, Oughtibridge. Part of this will include community woodland workshops, which

It’s not too late to make a will... Hello, I’m Jane Bowland, your local consultant of 10 years experience. We are experts in helping people arrange their wills, trusts and lasting powers of attorney. I specialise in helping all kinds of people gain peace of mind by providing professional estate planning services, but with a personal touch. I offer a FREE consultation without obligation for anybody who would like to know more about any of the following:

• Making a basic will • Setting up lasting powers of attorney • Protecting your home from care fees • Pre–paid funeral plans Having a Will in place ensures your assets go to who you choose. It makes the whole process much easier for the people you leave behind and it puts in black and white exactly what you want to happen, avoiding any misunderstanding or arguing. Setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney gives the people that YOU choose the legal right to look after your financial and personal affairs if you become unable to do so. Without one in place, your spouse, partner or family members are NOT automatically able

to take over. Make sure you avoid the distress this can cause you and your loved ones. I know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. I can visit you at a convenient time in the comfort and privacy of your own home to discuss your circumstances. My visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation

to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all my professional services and work are fully insured and Collective Legal Solutions are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all my clients are assured of being fully protected at all times. All my clients (and their families) that I have helped in the past have been very happy with my services and tell me they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.

Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home from any future care fees. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane!

Also, the Co-op Funeral Service for their efficiant service provided.

Your Letters Adam believes this is a bad thing for High Green, that’s the most deprived area in the all Ecclesfield Parish, then he needs to reset his Labour social justice and deprivation compass.

Your Letters

(2) Adam’s right that Sheffield City Council ward pot money of £15,000 was spent on the Miners Welfare Hall, I remember the rumour letter well that Adam and Zoe Sykes put in Look Local on Thursday Feb 25 2016 I believe making a big fanfare that the usage had gone up because of this money spent, when in reality it had nearly halved, also what I find astonishing is that most of the people that use it aren’t from High Green.

Got something to say? Email us at news@looklocal.org.uk Publication subject to space and content. Publishing does not mean we agree with the content.

The rumour part of the letter was to do with a question I asked at the Cabinet in the Community on Tuesday Feb 16 2016 where city officers could be asked questions, I asked a question (that I knew to be true) about Sheffield City Council wanting to offload the Miners Welfare Hall to a business for free, this went down like a lead balloon with city officers in complete panic to reply, many emails Comedians and reality went back and forth from me and city for a number of days after the event, a week later Adam and Zoe’s letter in Look Local stated it was a rumour, Dear editor, what Adam didn’t count on was me having a I would like the chance to reply to councillor Adam copy of a letter he had written to members of the Hurst letter in look Local on December 28. (3) S106 monies (1) Ecclesfield Parish Council has a grant pot of £30,000 per year of which the High Green Community receives a pittance, how do I know it’s a pittance? Because I have the full list of Grant’s given from 2001 to 2017, David Ogle’s proposal would see this pittance increase to about 33%, £10,000 per year from this grant pot, an equal share split equally between all Ecclesfield parish wards, if

made out Labour had stumped up the ÂŁ45,000 for the skate park, but when he was challenged at a meeting about it, he admitted it was factually incorrect and that he was the author of the leaflet, I still have the recording of that meeting from Tuesday November 22 2016 if he would like to challenge these facts.

Recycle your unsuitable Christmas gifts with Barnardo’s RECYCLE your unsuitable Christmas gifts and help vulnerable children at the same time is the message from children’s charity Barnardo’s. Barnardo’s is appealing for those ‘not quite right’ gifts from the festive season to be donated to their chain of shops across South Yorkshire so they can be sold to raise vital funds. The money will be used to help disadvantaged children and young people, including those who are living in poverty, who are disabled or who have been sexually exploited. Make sure you place them where they can be seen – in areas close to your home, in view of visitors or in places where they can be appreciated from the warmth and comfort of indoors – such as outside the kitchen window or on a window sill. The upside of colder weather is that flowers last longer and even the humble evergreen such as bay, laurel or viburnum looks stunning edged with a touch of winter morning frost. Some of the best plants for winter colour are classic favourites that still bring a smile to the face in deep mid winter and, outside of prolonged snow and rain, can survive into the spring. Helleborus niger – also known as the Christmas Rose – is a stylish starting point and has a purity of colour that makes it ideal as a single planting or as a centre piece in a mixed container. It has clusters of saucer-shaped flowers in white, pink, green, mauve or smoky purple. The winter flowering Viola (looking like a mini pansy) is a really cheerful choice for pots and planters and comes in a variety of colours from white through to yellow, orange, mauve, purple and blue. Erica (also known as Heather) brings a hint of the highlands to any seasonal container with its stems of delicate flowers in white, pink, red, magenta or purple. Before you get going on planting make sure you take on board these tips from the RHS (Royal Horticultural Society) for growing in containers during winter … * Remember that plants grow very little in winter so make sure you start with good-sized plants and use sufficient numbers of plants for the size of container to make an impact from the start * Position your container where it will get as much light as possible during the winter months to ensure plant foliage remains green and healthy

* Raise containers off the ground on pot feet or bricks to aid drainage and help prevent the freezing conditions that cause pots to crack

TEN-MAN STEELS STUNNED BY SHEFFIELD FC Stocksbridge Park Steels 1-2 Sheffield FC STEELS’ tough Christmas schedule of four games in eight days took its toll with late goals and sending offs denying them more than the two points taken.

The game swung the visitors’ way with little over five minutes gone when Steels goalkeeper David Reay was adjudged to have handled the ball outside the area.

Chris Hilton’s men failed to win against three teams in the top seven and succumbed to defeat in the local derby against Sheffield FC on New Year’s Day.

The referee applied the letter of the law and Reay was left with a long walk back to the dressing room. Captain Liam Macfadyen deputised in goal and managed to keep the visitors at bay.

A credible draw against runaway leaders Basford was followed by a last-gasp defeat at fourth place Frickley. Richard Stirrup scored what looked like the winner against Stamford, but yet again a last minute equaliser denied Steels the win. A healthy crowd of over 200 turned out for what eventually turned out to be a good game against local rivals Sheffield FC. A sending off, a comeback win, and a ‘worldie’ to win the game saw Sheffield take the spoils when it looked like Steels would stun their rivals with only ten men. Before the game a minute silence was well held for Jack Newton, who recently passed away aged 95. Jack, President of the club and a former Chesterfield and Huddersfield Town goalkeeper, will be sadly missed. A subdued first half saw Sheffield hit the post, other than that the only noteworthy occurrence saw a Sheffield effort making it over the stadium wall and onto Bracken Moor Lane. The second half saw a sudden change in weather conditions as wind and rain made playing conditions tricky to say the least.

It took him only three minutes to open the scoring when he was found by Brodie Lichfield on the counter and the prolific striker dispatched calmly into the far corner. Steels’ joy was short lived as from the kick off Sheffield equalised when Francis slotted in a rebound after Macfadyen had saved. The game had now turned into an end-to-end spectacle and Sheffield’s inability to stop Lumsden almost saw the striker nudge Steels ahead again but he was denied at close range by the keeper. With eight minutes remaining it was Sheffield’s turn to stun Steels. Full-back Chapman scored a screamer from all of 30 yards straight into the top right hand corner. Next Home game: Saturday January 13 against Cleethorpes Town with a 3pm kick off at Look Local Stadium.

Church make it 10 unbeaten The game ended as a 1-1 draw with both goals coming in the first half. Church found themselves a goal down early on as Lee Hill opened the scoring after just four minutes.

Steels were given a fresh impetus up front with the introduction of star striker Joe Lumsden in the 72nd minute.

Ryan Johnson was awarded the man of the match and a fantastic crowd of 303 turned out for the game. After the game, Church manager Ian Richards said: “We’d have liked to finish the year off with a win, we’re undefeated now in 10 games and we’re in the top 10 where we want to be. A fantastic attendance too and great atmosphere. For the last 65 minutes we were probably the better team.

“Let’s not forget how good 2017 has been in terms of getting promotion in the way we did, doing the double at Bramall Lane and the FA Cup run which will go down in history and then the last two months we’ve been undefeated which is an unknown feat at this level. “I’m very proud of the players and what they’ve achieved at this club.” On Saturday, Church travel to Rainworth Miners Welfare and kick off at 3pm.
