CASH BOOST FOR PENISTONE?

PARAMOUNT COULD BOAST THREE SCREENS AND NEW BAR

PENISTONE Paramount is the focus of a regeneration project that could see the historic cinema receive substantial investment. In plans that Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council are to consider, major investment in the cinema would result in a second screen being installed, along with an outdoor auditorium area, which could be used as a third screen or as a space to host events. Elsewhere in Penistone, the market barn could also benefit with improved stalls and a course of weather-proofing, making the market more suitable for use in the winter months. Storage for bicycles are also earmarked and Penistone has been recognised as having tourism potential following

the successful hosting of the Tour de Yorkshire events in recent times. Costs have yet to be finalised but it is thought that the injection would be significantly more than the £500,000 figure previously mentioned. Built as the Assembly Hall for Penistone in 1914, the Penistone Paramount celebrated its centenary year in November 2014. It is currently a single screen 350-seat cinema, although it also boasts a large stage with plenty of live events being offered. The new plans would keep Penistone Town Council’s chamber intact but a new bar and screen would be installed in the building.

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL CARNIVAL DAY IN STANNINGTON

THE weather stayed dry and warm, people turned up in droves and Stannington celebrated another happy, colourful, musicfilled carnival day. After a parade led by Sheffield Sea Cadets Band, Stannington Players in pantomime costumes declared the day open, and typified the carnival’s theme, ‘Once upon a time’. What followed was a programme filled with performance, spectacle and fun. School choirs from Bradfield Dungworth and Stannington Infants and performances by local dance schools put the spotlight on young performers.

Stannington’s award winning brass band set the musical tone, again providing a stage for young people through its training band.

A highlight of the day was Adora Bubble. In her fairy costume, she created clouds of soap bubbles floating in the air which children, and plenty of grown-ups too, chased and burst. It was all great fun. The only people let down on the day were Sheffield Kite Fliers. They brought their power kites, intending to put on a display of flying, but the wind refused to blow. Chair of the organisers, Jenny van Tinteren, said: “I think we can congratulate ourselves on another successful carnival. The final count is still in progress, but we are confident we will soon be announcing that another excellent amount of money has been raised this year to donate to all the local organisations and good causes that Stannington Carnival supports.”

MPs support calls for plan to improve mobile network ANGELA Smith is one of a group of 78 cross-party MPs representing rural constituencies urging the Government to support a proposal by the mobile industry to create a ‘Shared Rural Network’ to extend mobile overage to hard to reach areas. The MPs have written to the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, Jeremy Wright, asking him to support the initiative which would significantly improve

rural coverage and enhance economic, educational and leisure opportunities in rural areas where, in some cases, there is no coverage at all. The four Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) put forward a proposal for a ‘Shared Rural Network’ after the MPs called on the Secretary of State to impose compulsory roaming between providers if the industry did not come up with its own solution.

Angela commented: “The lack of mobile coverage in some of the most rural parts of Penistone and Stocksbridge will vastly increase operational coverage for many constituents in both their working and home lives. The current inadequate digital connectivity has had a huge impact on growth for the local, regional and national economy and needs to be put right as soon as possible. I welcome these new proposals because it will provide a much-needed solution in a more efficient,

more effective and a less environmentally impactful way than current proposals.” The MPs are also supporting the industry’s call for the reform of Permitted Development Rights to allow for taller masts, equivalence in policy with fixed broadband such as business rates relief in line with those for new fixed fibre networks and better access to public sector sites and land.

Soldier On THE critically acclaimed play written and directed by Jonathan Lewis will form the centrepiece of an inspiring programme of creativity on offer alongside the Invictus UK Trials for the first time. This July, the Invictus UK Trials will add a new pioneering arts element into the mix on offer via The Soldiers’ Arts Academy, a platform for serving and veteran military personnel to recover, retrain and to access new work. Through a series of workshops, exhibitions, talks and performances this new initiative will demonstrate how those leaving the Armed Forces can look for new work outside the military family and find inspiration and security in the arts and creative industries. After two sell-out London seasons and a national tour in 2018 ‘Soldier On’, arrives in Sheffield at The Oval Hall, Sheffield City Hall on 23rd and 24th July. The play is inspired by true stories which Lewis, author of the multi-award-winning West End hit ‘Our Boys’,

work-shopped with British servicemen and women and their families over five years. A passionate cast, many of them Army and Royal Marine veterans, bring their own experiences to life through a mix of storytelling, music, dance and mixed media that is hard-hitting, poignant and close to their own hearts.

He went on to drama school and subsequently played Sgt Chris McLeod in two series of ITV’s Soldier, Soldier in the 1990s. Lewis’ multiaward winning hit first play ‘Our Boys” was revived in the West End in 2012 and completed an award-winning run at the 2018 Edinburgh Fringe.

With a cast including injured veterans, the show explores what really happens when military personnel leave the army - through the journey of a group of soldiers and their family members who take up acting to help them recover from PTSD.

‘Soldier On’ is produced by Amanda Faber and the Soldiers’ Arts Academy, a platform through which serving and ex-serving military personal and their families can participate in the creative and performing arts, using their skills and experiences to engage audiences.

It’s their words that do the talking in what one veteran, filmmaker Neil Davies, has named” The Full Military Monty”. With humour, warmth and searing honesty, ‘Soldier On’ lays bare both the shocking and sometimes heart-warming truths about the impact of PTSD - and the very real and facts of life faced by veterans in Britain in 2019. Jonathan Lewis was an Army Scholar who was invalided out of the forces in 1986.

The Butterfly Lion to War Horse SHEFFIELD City Hall welcomes Michael Morpurgo, one of the UK’s most loved story-tellers and best-selling author of War Horse, Private Peaceful and the Butterfly Lion. In this one-off event on Wednesday July 24 at 4pm, he talks to Paralympian and presenter Ade Adepitan about his life and work and about writing about war and its consequences. This is an unmissable opportunity to hear about the stories, people and creatures that have inspired him to write. The event is especially organised to coincide with the Invictus UK Trials. Ade Adepitan is an author himself and currently has two books out: Cyborg Cat: Rise of the Parson’s Road Gang and Ade Adepitan: A Paralympian’s Story. His second Children’s book Cyborg Cat and the Night Spider is out on 3rd October, with all proceeds going to Children in Need. Michael began writing stories in the early 1970s, in response to the children in his

class at the primary school where he taught in Kent.

at festivals, concerts and theatres.

Now one of the UK’s bestloved authors and storytellers he was appointed Children’s Lau-reate in 2003, a post he helped establish with Ted Hughes in 1999. He was awarded an OBE in 2007 and a Knighthood in the New Year’s Honours in 2018 for services to litera-ture and charity.

With his wife Clare, he set up the charity Farms for City Children, which offers children and teachers from inner-city primary schools the chance to live and work in the countryside for a week on one of the charity’s three farms in Devon, Gloucestershire and Wales. Over 100,000 children have visited the three farms run by the charity since it began in 1976.

Michael has written over 130 books, including The Butterfly Lion, Kensuke’s Kingdom, Why the Whales Came, The Mozart Question, Shadow, and War Horse, which was adapted for a hugely successful stage production by the National Theatre and then, in 2011, for a film directed by Steven Spielberg. His book, Private Peaceful was adapted for the stage by Simon Reade and a film, directed by Pat O’Connor. He has won numerous awards including those voted for by children themselves, the Blue Peter Book Award and the Children’s Book Award. A son and grandson of actors, Michael has acting in his blood and enjoys collaborating and performing live adaptations of his books

Teachers frequently comment that a child can learn more in a week on the farm than a year in the classroom. HRH The Princess Royal is Patron of the charity. The couple were awarded joint MBEs for their work in education. Tickets £11, concessions (unwaged, disabled, under 18 & armed forces) £5.50 (inc. booking fee). Tickets for An Audience with Sir Michael Morpurgo (subject to booking fees) at Sheffield City Hall are available online at www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk through the ticket hotline on 0114 2 789 789 and in person at the Sheffield City Hall Box Office.

Diabetes Prevention Week I am writing on behalf of Stocksbridge Community Health Forum to tell you about Diabetes Prevention week beginning Saturday September 7 2019. When I started working for Sheffield Teaching Hospitals in 2005 the prevalence of diabetes was 3% of the population. According to Diabetes UK, in 2019 this has risen to 8.5 % which is over 40,000 people in Sheffield of which more 1500 live in Stocksbridge and Deepcar. However, over 2000 others either have undiagnosed diabetes or are at risk of developing it. Diabetes reduces life expectancy and increases the risk of heart attacks, strokes, kidney failure, amputations and blindness.

A number of us at Ecclesfield Parish Residents Association (EPRA) can’t believe that more isn’t being done to deal with the issues we read on these pages week on week. After voting EPIC at the last council elections, I’d ask the councillors to stop faffing about with things that only affect a minority.

It’s not too late to make a Will... Hello, I’m Jane Bowland, your local Estate Planning Consultant of 13 years experience. I am an expert in helping people arrange their Wills, Trusts, Lasting Powers of Attorney and Pre-paid Funeral Plans. Along with my colleague Haworth Ward-Drummond we specialise in helping all kinds of people gain peace of mind by providing professional advice, but with a personal touch. We offer a FREE consultation without obligation for anybody who would like to know more about any of the following:

• Making a basic Will • Setting up Lasting Powers of Attorney • Protecting your home for future generations • Pre-paid Funeral Plans We know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. We can visit you at a convenient time in the privacy and comfort of your own home to discuss your unique circumstances.

A visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all our professional services and work are fully insured and we are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all our clients are assured of the

highest standards of conduct at all times. All our clients (and their families) that we have helped in the past have been very happy with our services and tell us they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.

Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane!

ON Thursday July 4, children at Windmill Hill Primary School showed off their art skills by exhibiting their work in an exhibition for parents and carers. Over 300 self-portraits were on display, with artists ranging from four to 11 years of age. Mrs Pape, the teacher who organised the exhibition said she was, “delighted with

After taking part in The Great British Spring Clean, the children from Windmill Hill School were asked by Burncross Action Team to design a poster based on the litter the children collected. The response was excellent, with many children showing great concern as to the problems discarded

Councillor Mike Levery agreed to judge the competition, which was won by Chloe Barton, a Year Two pupil. Chloe was awarded a certificate and ÂŁ50 for her class. Her design will be reproduced, to be displayed near our woodland, green spaces and vulnerable areas in Burncross.

Plough Inn, Low Bradfield

Wentworth Woodhouse

A traditional country pub that serves locally sourced, traditional pub food with an extensive menu. The Plough Inn is nestled in the rolling hills of Bradfield and sits on the banks of Dam Flask Reservoir in the peak park area of north Sheffield.

The Grade One listed stately home in South Yorkshire, for the second year running, is hosting the Wentworth Woodhouse Gin Festival.

The family orientated public house is a haven for walkers, cyclists and general country loving folk who descend to relax and enjoy superb local ales and fresh traditional pub food.

Wentworth Woodhouse boasts the longest façade of any country house in England. It stands in 87 acres of gardens and grounds and has extensive views over former parkland, including a deer park and lakes, which are vested in the Fitzwilliam Wentworth Amenity Trust.

Just a short stroll down the road to the village green, with a picturesque stream and picnic area, a fantastic cricket pitch, and plenty of scenic walks around the many dams in the area, with all with routes leading back to the Plough Inn for that well earned pint.

Featuring an eclectic mixture of gin providers, the festival will be offering refreshing citrus gins to sweet rhubarb to the classic nononsense gin. Peruse this wonderful stately home and immerse your senses in the unique offering of each gin vendor and their bars.

Bistro in the Barn Want to enjoy a tasty plate of food in a relaxed atmosphere with no faff? Then get yourself to the wonderfully rural Bistro in the Barn. The specials boards showcase favourite ingredients of the week and offer diners something exciting and tasty to try. The staff put as much love into their drinks menu as with the food with some wonderful wines from around the world and a small but quality ‘treasury of tipples’ behind the bar. Bistro in the Barn claims to be the best gluten free restaurants in the Sheffield area and one

of the best places to eat in Barnsley, the nearest large town. They do their best to provide something for everyone at the bistro. The Bistro in the Barn is as beautiful as the menu. A welcoming restaurant in the perfect place to get together with friends and family to enjoy great food, great drinks and great conversation. Though secluded, they are in the middle of Yorkshire making them one of the top places to eat for diners from the areas of Millhouse Green, Barnsley, Penistone, Holmfirth, Sheffield, Thurlstone and the Holme Valley.

Captain Hibbert won the toss and elected to bowl first. The Civil Service batters came out and rode their luck at times however the opening pair fought well and got their rewards. The opening batsmen were scoring quickly and this forced Stocksbridge into changing the bowling quicker then they had hoped.

The usually so reliable father-son opening bowling partnership of Andy and Joe Hibbert couldn’t make inroads and Civil Service soon passed 50 for no loss. Jake Vickers came into the attack and broke the opening partnership JOIN OUR TEAM however Stocksbridge never really seemed to control the innings. Harris was probably the pick of the bowlers as he kept it tight with figures of 1-30 from 10 overs.

Scargill was well to the fore over the four laps of the 10 mile circuit and in the final sprint just missed out on a podium place in his age group finishing fourth. Trevor Mayne rode the same course over five laps. He attacked twice

Next week sees both sides forget about their respective divisions as they both turn their attentions to the cup semi finals. The first XI welcome Uni Staff to Bracken Moor in the Brian Winston Premier Cup and the second XI travel to Ridgeway in the Phil Denniff Intermediate Cup. Here is to hoping both of our sides and reach the finals!

The best partnership of the innings came for the sixth wicket. Steve Perry and Joe Hibbert batted excellently to give Stocksbridge the slightest of hope. The pair batted excellently and started to put Civil Service under pressure. Both batters brought up their half centuries at similar times, first Perry, shortly followed by

in the first seven miles and the second time was able to establish a break with one other rider. After 20 miles, seven riders breached over to join the pair. The pace increased and Mayne lost contact with 10 miles to go finally finishing 15th in his age group. The previous Wednesday, Trevor Mayne and Paul Heggie rode in the Barnsley RC 10 mile time trial at Park Springs. Mayne finished in 22m 41s

to place second behind Darren Gough of Barnsley RC while Heggie riding his road bike finished in 27m 44s. Stocksbridge chipped away at the wickets, picking up six in total, two for Vickers, one each for Andy Hibbert, Les Harris and Joe Hibbert, plus a run out from wicketkeeper Matt Hague. Credit to Civil Service though who posted an excellent 244 mainly thanks to 96 from Dave Whitby.

The new season kicks off Saturday August 3 with a home game at home to NCEL new boys Silsden AFC and all will be working hard to achieve a place in the final squad.

BUSY WEEK AT GOLF CLUB GOOD weather helped during a busy week at Sto c k s br i d g e Golf Club. The first man competition of the week was the Dragons Section’s Summer Master Putter on the July 10. The stroke play competition was won by Cliff James (21) with a net 63. Cliff was a shot clear of Dragons Captain, Steve Mortimer (13) with a net 64. A further shot back was Mick Siddall (16) who took third place in front of several other players with the same score, but a better back 9. On the same day, the Club Scratch League team played their penultimate game of the season at home

to Beauchief. Sitting at the bottom of the table and desperately in need of a convincing win to maintain hopes of avoiding relegation to Division Five, the players delivered the goods with a resounding 8-0 victory. All four team players, Liam O’Sullivan, Matt Sedgwick, Andrew Finney and Ben Stringer all won their games with confident performances. Team Captain, Liam O’Sullivan was the last of the four to win his game on the 18th green with along birdie putt.

Afterwards he said: “That was important for us, but next week away to Crookhill, we need at least another sic points to keep our hopes alive.” The team now have 31 points from nine matches and all to play for next week. On Saturday, there were two Gents competitions played simultaneously. Jarrod Burton won the Les Edwards Trophy and the Rabbits Cup was won by W. Gannon (25) with a seriously impressive net 57.

Strong Owls side beat Park Steels

SHEFFIELD Wednesday defeated Stocksbridge Park Steels 5-0 in the second of two friendlies played on Saturday afternoon. Half the Owls squad had beaten Lincoln 3-1 in the earlier kick-off at Lincoln and the side that took to the field at the Look Local Stadium carried on the trend. Sam Winnall opening the scoring on 28 minutes. Morgan Fox’s cross to the near post was met by Winnall, and his header flicked the fingertips of Crosby before finding the back of the net. Wednesday went into half time 1-0 up and certainly didn’t let up in the second half as their dominance began to show.

Hutchinson, the latter’s cross found Nuhiu and the Kosovan made no mistake as he placed neatly into the net. The Owls only had to wait five minutes to make it four, this time Fernando Forestieri was on the scoresheet.

The Argentinian picked the ball up after a scramble in the box and placed confidently past Crosby. There was still time for Wednesday to add another and Joost van Aken did exactly that with the last kick of the game. The big defender looked up after picking the ball up 25 yards out and drilled his strike clinically home.

First, new signing Kadeem Harris jinked his way to the edge of the box before curling the ball into the far corner on his left foot to double the Owls’ lead.

The sun shone down on the large crowd at the Look Local Stadium and Wednesday chairman Dejphon Chansiri made the journey up and was impressed by the facilities on offer.

The former Cardiff man was also involved in Wednesday’s third, he laid the ball out to

The game was played as part of the agreement between the two clubs which will see Shef-

field Wednesday U23fixtures played at Bracken Moor next season. Steels chairman Graham Furness was delighted with the turnout. He said: “It brings much needed funds into the club in its quest to continue playing at the high level we are at and even try to move to the next division in the next few years. “To do this we need the community to get behind us and help us to achieve our aims. We are striving to be more active in the community and make this a team to be proud of. We have season tickets available at a good value price of ÂŁ90 for adults and ÂŁ60 for concessions - or you can pay on the gate for home games. “We have another home friendly on Saturday against Vanarama League opposition Spennymoor FC. Come along and have a look at us or get in touch with myself or Roger Gissing to order tickets. Let’s all try and take this club forward together.â€?
