Honorary Secretary / Treasurer Foreword
I would like to welcome everyone to this years Championship Finals and thank our sponsors for their continued sponsorship of our finals day programme. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the clubs for making their greens available for ties during the season, especially those who did so at short notice in times of emergency. This could be the last time the Finals will be played on a Saturday due to the start date of the Andrew Hamilton Trophy being two weeks later from next season. Consequently the Finals will be played, from 2012, on a Sunday, although this has still to be ratified at the AGM. I wish all the players a successful and enjoyable day. Good luck to you all. Finally, I would like to thank President Andrew McLean and his Directors for their support during the past year. JIM RYAN Honorary Secretary/Treasurer Glasgow Bowling Association 6

Under 25 County Team
Another season has drawn to a close and our team can be proud of the efforts made this year. The season started with successful trial games and a win over Wigtonshire in the league at Hawthorn. A visit to West Netherton resulted in a narrow defeat (6 shots) to a good Ayrshire team. Our last game at Stamperland resulted in a loss by 24 shots. Overall, it was a good year and I expect to challenge the best next year. Winner of the Donald Morris Trophy was Steven Borthwick (Anniesland) Congratulations to Brian Bowers, Mark Kelsey, Callum Taggart and Paul Ward on being selected for the Scotland Under 25 trials at Blackhill. I would like to thank Director Peter Cowie, Past Presidents John Fullerton, Keith Kittridge and George Palmer, together with coaches Jake Condi, George Gardiner, Gerry Love and Norman Thomson for all their help during the season. Glasgow v Ayrshire
This competition was first played for in 1855 and was played on a home and away basis. The first game took place on Ayrshire greens on 2nd August 1855 with the return played on Glasgow greens on 9th August 1855. Glasgow won both games by 1187-902 and 1282-822 respectively. Wellcroft was the winning club over the two games. In the two games not a single Ayrshire club won.
The Eglington Jug Presented to the Bowlers of Glasgow and Ayrshire by Archibald, Earl of Eglington and Winton in 1887. Its great size and the extreme beauty of its tracery and ornamentation, render it a trophy worthy to be contended for by the two great counties to which it has been presented. • Ayrshire has won the trophy 85 times and Glasgow 59 times. • The trophy was not played for during the First and Second World Wars. • In 1856 the competition was abandoned due to adverse weather conditions. • Top winners: Ayrshire, Dreghorn 8 times. Glasgow, Wellcroft 7 times.
Burns Crystal Vase In 2001, both Associations were pleased to accept an inscribed ornate vase for presentation to the highest-up club on the losing side. Both Ayrshire and Glasgow have won it 5 times. The Glasgow v Ayrshire competition is still the biggest one day competition in the world. In 1905, a high of 760 rinks consisting of 3040 bowlers took part. Even today the commitment of bowlers from both counties for this competition is still as high as it was in the early 1900’s. In 2010, 640 rinks consisting of 2560 bowlers took part. Both trophy’s are presented at a celebration event held at the club of the winners of the ‘Jug’. In 2010, the Eglington Jug was won by Townholm BC, Kilmamock and the Vase by Shettleston BC. 20

There were 4 Counties, Edinburgh & Leith, West Fife, West Lothian and Glasgow, involved in the competition held at Sighthill BC in Edinburgh. Hawthorn BC represented the Association and were unfortunate to lose 3-2 to a very strong West Lothian team. The entrants have been increased to 9 Counties for 2011. The competition will be called the Andrew D. McKellar Inter-County Top 5 and a trophy has been donated by Currie BC. Cardonald BC will represent the Association in this years competition.

Glasgow v Lanarkshire 1896-2010 This competition was first played for in 1896 and a trophy donated by Sir John Watson was won by Lesmahagow BC. Glasgow had to wait until 1900 before registering a first victory by Hutchesontown BC. Lanarkshire have won the trophy 50 times and Glasgow 43 times. There were no games during the First and Second World Wars and in 1961, the competition was abandoned due to adverse weather conditions. Top winners: Lanarkshire — Lesmahagow 7 times Glasgow — Kirkhill 5 times Willowbank Bowling Club, of Glasgow, last won the Glasgow v Lanarkshire in 2010. The competition had been in decline for years, and in an effort to stimulate interest in the competition a new format was agreed at a meeting of both Associations in 2008. 160 rinks from 40 clubs would be the minimum requirement for the Competition to continue. Unfortunately in 2010 the amount of rinks representing Lanarkshire dropped to 133 which was well below the agreed minimum, therefore, reluctantly, both Associations agreed that the time had come for this competition to end. It has been proposed that the Sir John Watson trophy, being such a magnificent trophy, should be played for on an annual basis. Discussions are ongoing to use the aggregate score of the Andrew Hamilton Trophy games between both Associations to decide the winners of the trophy.
