The Champions in 2011 will qualify to participate in the British Isles Championship which will take place in Llandrindod Wells, Wales in 2012. At Sighthill, Edinburgh this year Bowls Scotland had excellent results as Willie Wood M.B.E. retired with 142 caps from International duty. As well as winning the International series, wins were recorded in the BIBC Pairs, David and Stephen Fisher, Anchor BC and Junior Singles, Kevin Anderson, Dumbarton BC. To the players, give it your best shot and to the spectators and supporters who come along to add that special ingredient which has made this event a highlight of the bowling year. Scotland celebrates Home International double

Scotland’s women’s team celebrate win in Llandrindod,Wales Scotland's men produced another clean sweep while the women's team also won three matches as both remained Home International champions this summer. The women were first in action at Llandrindod Wells in Wales and they got off to the perfect start with a 128-108 win over England that put them in the driving seat for the rest of the competition. A comprehensive 132-94 win over their hosts in the second match was followed by a 143-69 victory over Jersey which meant the title was all but secured before they played their last match against Ireland, such was their advantage in terms of shots up. The only team they could have lost to by that stage was England who had completed their schedule the previous day and the knowledge that they could afford to lose by 39 shots perhaps explained a slightly disappointing finish as they were beaten 122-111 by Ireland, but the victory tasted no less sweet for that. The men could afford no such luxury in their four-

8

nation series on home soil at Sighthill. They, too, got off to a fine start with a 123-89 win over Ireland. England's 125-89 win over Wales meant that the afternoon meeting with the Auld Enemy would decide who had control going into the final day. As is usually the case every match was keenly contested, but the Scots only lost one match and a 22-12 victory by Alex Marshall's rink meant they had a bit of room to spare in registering a 111-95 overall success. That meant they had a relatively slender 15 shot advantage going into the final round of matches and the situation looked precarious when they fell 23 shots behind early on to Wales. Some reassurance was being offered at that stage by the fact that Ireland had edged ahead of England however, and the Scots gradually regained the ascendancy to complete the series with a third win, 155-108 overall, while Ireland went on to beat England and claim the runner-up spot.

Houston calls time on International career Former British Isles Singles champion Kathy Houston bowed out of the international game by helping Scotland to a successful defence of their Women's Home International title last month. Following the British Isles International Series the 68-yearold announced her retirement at Llandrindod Wells after earning her 60th cap at the end of a superb career in which she made every appearance as a lead. "It was a hard decision to make but I wanted to go out on a high," said the Caledonia BC member. "I know it is the right decision. I want to spend more time with my family and they have been a great support to me during my international career, they have been 100% behind me every step of the way. Because of my age it is now time to step aside and give some of the young players in the game the same opportunities I have had." Houston's career highlights include winning the British Isles Singles Championships in 2007 Kathy Houston with Margaret Letham following her Scottish title win the year before, as well as finishing watching my husband when he joined a club. Wood bids farewell to outdoor

Emotions ran high at Sighthill earlier this month as Scotland's greatest ever bowler said farewell to the outdoor international game. Willie Wood MBE, started as he finished his glorious career at the highest level by being part of a rink that won all three of its matches in helping Scotland to a clean sweep and a successful defence of their Home International title. It was a fitting end to a career that had begun a staggering 45 years earlier and which had seen the legend from Gifford set records with both his World Championship medal haul and his run of Commonwealth Games appearances. He also retired as a reigning World Champion and in those final Scotland appearances he was accompanied by David Peacock, the rink's skip and lead Wayne Hogg, the men with whom he won the Triples gold medal at his last World Championship in 2008, as well as West Barns club mate Allister Kennedy. That final weekend began with Alex "Tattie" Marshall, another great of the Scottish game who plays out of the Gifford club in Wood's 32

home village, saying the team was determined to win it for Willie. "He's been a great ambassador for Scottish bowls and hugely successful in the majority of events he's played in as well, so I think this weekend will be highly emotional for all the players, especially because he's finishing in Edinburgh," said Tattie. "It will add a little bit of pressure onto us all, but I think we'll all be so keen to do our best for Willie and send him off with a winning international series and it's one of the best Scotland teams I've ever seen, from every lead right through to every skip." It ended with Peacock delivering the bowl which saw his rink home 16-15 in a match against Wales that they never led until the final end during which Willie had shown his class by producing one of the countless touchers of his career. "Towards the end of the game it was very emotional for Willie and I felt that way myself because we've played together for a few years now," Peacock said afterwards. "He's retiring as a world champion but he's not finished with the game yet. He's going to

to outdoor International game continue to play indoor internationals, but he's had some outdoor career and I don't think it will ever be matched. "There's not a bad word to be spoken about Willie either, by anybody." During the closing ceremony Wood received presentations from the captains of all four countries and before leaving the green through a guard of honour formed by all the international players he spoke briefly but movingly in thanking friends, foes and supporters for their tributes. "It was too much for me, it was too emotional and there was nothing more I could say," he admitted afterwards. "It has been so long now, I have spent more than half of my life playing for Scotland. To get those three wins for the rink and for the team to manage an unbeaten run to claim the trophy too - that was the cream. "I didn't play my best today, the whole time I was thinking this is the last time I will represent my country and it was on my mind throughout the game but it worked out OK in the end and I am happy with that result. "I have always had good support over the years and I always spoke to people if they spoke to me. I am not being big headed but I have been popular and it was nice to be able to draw a big crowd and I wanted to play well for them. You need that support and people behind you to help you win things and I have done that a lot and today was absolutely the perfect ending."

Development Update It is hard to believe that it is already four months since Bowls Scotland toured the country with our first ever round of Club Seminars. This year we visited nine venues with over 450 members attending and approximately 190 clubs represented. The Seminars were a great success in terms of attendances, the feedback we received and the contribution that those who attended made in the group sessions. The information gathered is now being used to help shape our future work plans and to ensure we continue to provide a service which meets the needs of our member clubs. In May we launched Bowls Scotland’s first ever Club Membership Drive. The concept is simple ‘to increase participation in the sport and membership in our clubs’. If your club has already run an event this season then please ensure you have completed the evaluation form which is downloadable from the Bowls Scotland website and return it to us. We hope to make this campaign even bigger and better in 2012 therefore the more clubs take part this year the more information we have to develop this concept in the future. Full information on the

campaign can be found in the Development section of the website. Bowls Scotland are currently conducting an Equity Monitoring Survey which all members are invited to complete. As well as meeting our requirements for Equity this information is extremely important for gathering up-todate profile information for our sport which helps our future development work. The Survey is available to download from the Development section of our website and can also be completed online at www.surveymonkey.com/s/VKV8NSS. Everyone who completes the survey will be entered into a free prize draw for a set of Taylor Bowls of your choice. The entry forms are also available from the website www.bowlsscotland.com I hope you all enjoy your time at the National Centre for Bowling and I look forward to seeing you around the complex during the Championships. Scots Stars Shine at British Isles Champs Scotland enjoyed significant success at the British Isles Championships this summer, with Caroline Brown claiming the Singles title and Scotland’s men lifting the Natwest Trophy, following wins from Kevin Anderson in the U25’s Singles and the Fisher brothers proving to be Scotland’s heroes as they claimed gold in the Pairs. It was a particularly satisfying win for Anchor duo, Stephen and David Fisher after they lost out in their District 22 Pairs final in Paisley before returning to Sighthill Bowling Club in Edinburgh the following morning to resume their challenge on the British Pairs title. Defeating the youthful Jersey pairing of Greg and Ross Davis 22-19 in what proved to be a

dramatic final at the end of a difficult week for the Scots, Skip Stephen said afterwards, “This feels fantastic, I am delighted after what we have been through.” Victory in that Pairs Final secured Scotland the overall win following another great performance from up and coming star Kevin Anderson. The 19 year old Dumbarton player got off to a bumpy start in his final, going 5-0 down after two ends, but went on to win the next six ends to take control of the match with a 12-5 lead. Ireland’s Gary Kelly briefly rallied to get back within range at 13-10 down, but from that point Anderson steadily stretched his advantage to run out a 21-12 winner. Claiming the first British Isles Junior title for Scotland since 1995, Anderson has ambitions to go far in the game, “Being a national U25 Champ and British Isles title holder is great, but I would like to get a world title in the future” he said. Motherwell’s Caroline Brown stormed to victory in her final against Jersey’s Karina Bisson 21-4 to claim her first senior British Isles Singles title at Llandrindod Wells, Wales. A delighted Brown said after her victory, “It feels absolutely fantastic to win this title. To come to an event like this and try your best for your country and for your family totally makes it all worthwhile and to come away with gold is great.”
