5,500 MILES On 5th October 1931 Clyde Pangborn and Hugh Herndon, Jr., two daring American aviators, completed the world’s first nonstop, transpacific flight from Japan to the United States. They took off and landed 41 hours later in Wenatchee, Washington, having covered a distance of 5,500 miles. At the time, it was the longest flight ever made over water.

COUNTRY VS. TOWN MELISSA MARINO-GOEBEL grew up in the North Shore area of Milwaukee called

Fox Point. She still loves the small-town feeling of Milwaukee, with its world class museums, sports, and culture. She is from an accomplished family. Her father was a third-generation owner of a construction company that specialized in general masonry work. A couple of his more famous projects include The American Club at Kohler and the Pabst Theater rehab in Milwaukee. Melissa’s mother was a teacher in a gifted school. Her students included Melissa. She went on to be a principal and administrator at public and private schools throughout Milwaukee. Melissa headed off for college at the University of Mississippi, wanting a large school with a southern climate, with visions of becoming a teacher. She even worked as a paraprofessional in an integrated first through third grade classroom but realized she didn’t share the passion for education. At 22, Melissa’s beloved father fell ill with cancer and she became his primary caregiver. Chicago became home base for work, while Melissa commuted back to Milwaukee to help her father. After losing her father, Melissa committed to her fashion career in Chicago. She is very close with her uncle, who was the VP of Marketing for Givenchy. He offered exposure to the fashion industry and its excitement. Melissa was a star at Neiman Marcus, then regional merchandiser for Laundry, followed by Theory. She moved to Hinsdale about five years ago from the city, where she was working for Gucci. Melissa’s husband is a Western Suburban native and Gucci had just opened a leased store at Oak Brook. It was an easy decision to take the lead there. She is now in her eighth year with the brand and Store Director of Gucci Oak Brook. Melissa married her husband almost four years ago. They live in Hinsdale in a 100-yearold home like the one she grew up in with two wonderful stepchildren and two goofy dogs. Gucci has a program called Changemakers that requires all employees to donate one day a quarter to service within their communities. Melissa assists the Midwest market for Gucci in managing that program and establishing partnerships with non-profit organizations. Community service and volunteer work are very important to Melissa. She is involved with the Hinsdale Auxiliary of Infant Welfare, and also partners with Braven, Social Works, Loaves and Fishes Food Bank and Bernie’s Book Bank. She is passionate about life in general. Having lost her father at such a young age, she doesn’t take time for granted. She is very connected to her friends and family. Melissa is extremely active, and loves to play tennis, paddle tennis, and pickleball. She works out religiously, loves to cook and entertain, and loves to travel with her husband and family. She would dress me to the nines every day and take me to class with her. I learned at a young age that I didn’t really love school! Music you love? Music is very important to me, and I love all genres. My grandfather was an opera singer, and while I can’t carry a tune, I usually know the lyrics to any song playing. Advice you would give to your younger self? To quote the great Vince Lombardi (I am a die- hard Packer fan) “The greatest accomplishment is not in never failing, but in rising again after you fail.”

MARRIAGE, MARGARITAS AND MIMESIS The Role of Displaced Desire in Divorce

once spent 45 minutes in the DuPage County Courthouse arguing over the allocation of a Margaritaville® Frozen Concoction Maker. That device (it was the three-pitcher “Tahiti” model) is readily available at local stores and online for the reasonable price of $559.99. I can assure you that between myself and opposing counsel, our combined fees for that exercise well exceeded the fair market value of the beverage machine itself. Why did that simple household product matter so much to the parties involved? It mattered because it was deeply personal. It mattered because that drink mixer held memories, not just margaritas. To understand how they ended up in Court arguing about appliances, one should know that the spouses in that particular case entertained guests frequently during their marriage. Their home had a large back yard with a sizable pool and very lovely outdoor furniture. An array of gleaming grills and stunning smokers completed the idyllic scene outdoors, and were also a subject of their divorce dispute. Even the lawn mowers, trimmers, and other garden appliances were additional topics of zealous advocacy in the litigation. The parties could have easily afforded to purchase a second set of everything about which they fought. But each one of those items was a totem of sorts, a repository of moments now long gone – a reminder of parties, anniversaries, birthdays, graduations and blow out events they enjoyed at their home. The fact of their fixation on these material items of metal should activate our empathy, because we are all susceptible to such attachments in one way or another. Recently, I was talking about the psychology of issues like this with a very experienced and emotionally intelligent mediator/ former Judge in the city. She often refers to this kind of displaced attachment as “anthropomorphizing.” It is ascribing a form of humanness to the material and non-organic – typically items of personal property. In divorce, much like when a close relative dies, artwork, clocks, furniture, and other items of tangible personalty often become imbued with outsized importance relative to their objective value. No matter the incomes involved or the size of the estate, almost every family law case presents at least one object that becomes a focus of the spouses’ mimetic conflict. And while litigants’ pitched battles over parenting time and custodial rights have a certain logic to them, the mud wrestling over tchotchkes does not, at first blush, until we unpack what is driving it. The French philosopher, Rene Girard, posited that mimetic desire and conflict are at the root of human experience and life. In very simple terms, we often want things because others want them and we often do not want things that others do not want. Our desires are often not fully our own, but instead, they arise and attach by reference to third parties. Because of this, we often find ourselves in an environment of conflict and rivalry. For Girard,

these desires are mediated (not in the legal sense) and they are reinforcing in a triangular fashion. In divorce, the complex stew of difficult emotions that husband and Brendan Hammer wife are grappling with often drives mimetic conflict and leads to the disputes like the one described here. In the case of the frozen drink machine, it represented something particularly meaningful to the spouse who used it most. Seeing the nature and degree of attachment being shown, the other spouse then developed an entrenched commitment around the device. The desire for the object was really a desire for something bigger. Spouse #1 was the party-thrower and extrovert in the marriage. But when Spouse #2 (who was quieter and more introverted) saw the degree to which the mixer was seen as attractive, this person then became fixated upon obtaining it and denying it to the other party. The reciprocity of their desire operated to escalate the issue. In truth, Spouse #2 wanted to be more like Spouse #1 in some ways. The introverted spouse had always navigated the social world through the efforts of the extroverted spouse. That was ending with the divorce. And that mixer was full of the emotion and feeling and meaning that came from that family dynamic. For all of us in family law matters, as lawyers or litigants, it is not always easy to figure out what people really want and why. Many clients are not equipped to fully mine their minds and hearts to arrive at those answers. Sadly, many lawyers are equally ill-equipped to navigate the complex terrain. Ultimately, the answers arrived at are typically not about the object or issue itself, but something far deeper and often more painful. Many of the disputes we see in divorce are actually just proxy wars for unpacking the emotional material of the marriage. But seeking and understanding those difficult answers can be clarifying, even freeing. I can vouch for that as a divorced parent myself and as a practitioner. And this is why therapists and divorce coaches can be essential resources for clients in either the mediation or litigation processes. Moreover, it is why it is vital for clients to seek and find emotionally perceptive, sensitive and nuanced attorneys who can appreciate what is often unspoken and unseen, but is driving the trajectory of a case or a position on an issue. n Illinois, divorcing parents are not usually responsible for the financial support of a child after the child turns 18 or graduates from high school, whichever occurs last. However, there are two major exceptions to this rule: First, parents may be ordered to pay child support for a non-minor child who is disabled (750 ILCS 5/513.5. Second, Parents may be ordered to pay a non-minor child’s Educational Expenses (750 ILCS 5/513). Generally, a parent’s obligation to provide child support ends when the obligation to provide Educational Expenses begins. “Educational Expenses” are defined as including tuition, room and board, book fees, registration, application fees, and other university costs. The definition has also been expanded to include contribution to the non-minor child’s living expenses while at school, their transportation costs, health costs, including insurance premiums for medical, dental, and vision, as well as any other expense the Court finds to be reasonable, within its discretion. The Court has discretion in determining the extent and allocation of financial contribution of the parent to the non-minor child’s college costs. The Court must find the costs to be “fair and reasonable” after considering the following factors: The financial resources of both parents. The standard of living the child would’ve enjoyed had the parents NOT divorced. The financial resources of the child. The child’s academic performance. Any other factor the Court deems relevant. The statute does provide certain limitations on a parent’s obligation to contribute to Educational Expenses for the non-minor child. The 2016 amendment to the statute limited the cost to instate tuition at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Nonetheless, the Court can deviate from the cost limitation if it finds that a parent has shown a “good cause.” Limitations include

terminating a parent’s obligation in the event the non-minor child is no longer enrolled as a full-time student, or is not in good standing with the school. This happens when the non-minor child’s G.P.A. falls below a C average, The parent should be given access to the non-minor child’s academic records. This is a unique aspect of Illinois divorce law as it imposes a financial obligation on divorcing parents that does not exist on parents who do not get divorced. While the constitutionality of this differentiation has been challenged on numerous fronts, the Court has consistently held that the obligation is consistent with the expanded role of the Court in the lives of divorced families to enforce the obligations that parents in an “intact” family would likely perform jointly. Remember that if you are considering divorce, are in the process of becoming divorced, or you have already obtained a divorce, you might be entitled to obtain financial support for your college-bound children. Beyond the Ordinary At the Graceful Ordinary in St. Charles, Chef Chris Curren has crafted a restaurant experience that not only defies time but comfort-food clichés.

ould it be too presumptuous to crown, right here and now, Chef Chris Curren’s new St. Charles spot, The Graceful Ordinary, as the single charming post-shutdown restaurant debut of the year? The food. The vibe. The jaw-dropping views. They’re all revelatory. Suffice to say, it’s worth the drive, no matter how high inflation takes a half tank of gas in the months to come. We were beguiled by the whole experience, in part because the last time we’d strolled downtown St. Charles there was a big old Brutalist eyesore of a concrete bank where the Graceful Ordinary now sits. My, my, my … how things have blossomed. Makes one think of the parable of the intrepid flower that squirms its way up through a crack in the cement. The Graceful Ordinary doesn’t just rest on the banks of the Fox River, it feels like it’s perched there, almost hovering over it, the way Frank Lloyd Wright cantilevered Fallingwater over the rushing waters of the Bear Run Stream in Mill Run, Pennsylvania. It’s field meets fauna in there. Historic-minded yet modern. Chic but unabashedly rustic. Chris Curren and his wife, Megan, both worked in the city prior to the pandemic. Chris oversaw the menu at Fulton Market Kitchen. Megan, who grew up in St. Charles, handled event planning.

With their day jobs put on hold due to the shutdown, they began strolling the streets of St. Charles and imagining a novel dining concept, the likes of which no one had ever attempted in the Fox River Valley: a modern take on the fire-dappled Colonial-era taverns that once forested the East Coast during the 18th century. Chris dreamt of working in a spacious open kitchen complete with an open hearth or the kind of first-class wood-burning oven you’d find in an elegant Neapolitan pizza parlor. Thankfully the Currens decided to purchase both of them. Order the kitchen’s stellar fire-roasted salmon and you’ll understand why both wood-fired stations were worth every penny. It’s the juiciest salmon this side of Alaska’s Bristol Bay. To preserve the fish’s natural oils and unctuousness, Curren sears the filet on a plancha set over the open flames of his hearth, then finishes it the wood-fired oven to double-crisp the skin and seal in its juices. While he’s busy preparing the salmon, he’ll warm two bowls placed on a grate perched high above the flames: one is a thick-as-Sabayon celery root puree and the second a loose brown-butter sauce. The salmon is glided atop a bed of crispy okra creamed by the puree, before a final drizzle of the brown butter acts as the dish’s glistening amber-colored capstone. There’s nothing dainty nor clichéd about any of the Graceful Ordinary’s offerings. This is muscular, rich and delightfully unpredictable fare. Take the dry-aged Bolognese, for instance. It doesn’t arrive looking like plump red tomato has been squeezed

all over it. It’s ochre-colored, dark as a cinnamon stick. The dish is composed of trimmings from the kitchen’s dryaged rib-eyes, which simmer in a tomato sauce spiked with a deep balsamic reduction that’s poured over flat handkerchief-shaped fazzoletti pasta squares. It’s unlike any Bolognese you’ve ever tasted, but it does answers the burning question: What would happen if a Pasta Granny decided to prepare an Old World Italian take on Texas chili? Every single offering came bearing a delightful surprise. A verdant, colorful burrata appetizer was speckled with perfectly al dente fava beans and crowned with tangle of pea tendrils. Curren’s steak tartare is served atop a buttery tuft of brioche,

DINNER DATE as if the chopped beef were some sort of savory frosting. The aforementioned charred rib-eye is paired with a spicy red pepper chimichurri sauce thickened with almonds. And the decidedly non-pedestrian chicken platter is a twin bill of deliciousness: a brined chicken breast roasted over the fire and deboned dark meat that’s fried Southern-style with a side of collard greens. After “oohing” and “ahhing” your way through the meal you’ll understand why the Currens chose the name they did, fusing the word “ordinary” (a common name for tavern during the American Revolution) with “graceful” (a nod to the style and care they’ve brought to their food and decor). The restaurant itself, in terms of ambiance, is positively lush. Grab a seat pretty much anywhere in the main dining room and you’re going to enjoy unobstructed views of the rushing Fox River. Late in the afternoon, on a sunny summer day, it feels like a Hudson River Valley landscape painting come to life. The dining room itself borrows more from Fragonard than Bierstadt: a modern take on an 18th-century Rococo drawing

room. Lots of polished wood. Bold statement-piece wallpaper selections. A fireplace lounge up front, where diners can enjoy drinks and snacks. Plenty lots of patio space for al fresco dining. Then there’s the central dining room, which is haloed with modern chandeliers that look like upturned clear Jell-O molds and fringed rows of faux greenery tucked into the rafters. Curren says that he hopes guests will look around during their meal and struggle to distinguish—with the snap and crackle of the fire, the soundtrack of rushing water, and the chatter of people laughing and scraping their plates clean—as to where the outside ends and the restaurant begins. In the months to come, scores of diners are likely to tell him that he’s achieved just that. But one thing is absolutely certain: In one fell swoop, the Graceful Ordinary has made St. Charles one of the can’t-miss dining destination of this summer. The Graceful Ordinary is located at 3 E. Casita Grande outdoor space looking out to the Rainforest

f you’ve dreamed of paradise, you’ve probably dreamed of Costa Rica—Pérez Zeledón, Costa Rica. Recently we ventured to this Central American destination and stayed at the ultraluxurious Hacienda AltaGracia, deep in the region’s natural rainforest. After our flight out of O’Hare and landing at the airport in San José, we took a short private charter to the resort’s airstrip and headed for our casita. Once inside, we marveled the immaculate living space designed by New York-based designer Nina Gotlieb. The casita was designed with a neutral color palette and rich textures of wood, stone, and organic fibers, bringing the area’s natural wonders indoors. The property offers 50 spacious one- and two-bedroom casitas on its 180 acres of property. Each offers stunning views overlooking the lush landscape and rolling hills of the San Isidro Valley. After taking in our accommodations, we headed for one of the two pools. Laying poolside, we once again had a panoramic view of the valley and mountains while sipping cocktails custom made with locally sourced ingredients. Along with the drinks we tried the freshmade guacamole and plantain chips—something we would have the opportunity to make with the chef later in the day. The resort is in the region’s cloud forest, rich with plants, trees, and flowers growing wildly, yet beautifully. It also happens to be located next to one of the world’s “Blue Zones”—an area where locals tend to live much longer than average—something locals are very proud of. The next morning, we took advantage of the team’s

expertise, hiking the mountains with our expert guide, Johan. The morning hike took us to the most picturesque waterfall locations where we snapped photos and tested the crystal-clear water—something we would be fully immersed in the next day. Johan was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the landscape—especially the nearly 300 species of birds that crossed our path as we walked the property. We left appreciating nature even more after spending a few hours with him. From there, we continued to the property owner’s outdoor home where we sat down for a traditional Costa Rican breakfast—rice, beans, onions, baked cheese, and caramelized plantains—before heading back. After returning to the resort, we once again took advantage of the infinity pool while snacking on fish tacos and salads, made from the resort’s lush garden. Every morsel of food devoured at the holistic paradise was delicious. Later that evening, we headed for one of the on-site restaurants, Grano, where we indulged in evening festivities with fellow guests and the bartender’s specialty cocktail of the day. Dinner at Grano was something worth raving about. The menu, which changes daily, featured unique delicacies with familiar ingredients. It was easy to like everything. The next day was all about leisure and excitement—something the resort prides itself on. Part of the Hacienda AltaGracia experience is helping guests discover the undiscovered and push themselves just outside of their comfort zone to break new boundaries

and encounter both peace and exhilaration. We accomplished just that during our stay. That afternoon, we were escorted to El Rio for a healing river bath. This immersive experience began with a cleansing of the aura, followed by a natural detoxifying coffee scrub before we were fully submerged in the cold, pure river water. We then headed for the natural river bath—a large bath basin filled with river water and heated for five hours in the morning by a large wood-burning fire. The experience was one-of-a-kind and helped us connect with nature—something that is magical in the rainforest. Our dinner that evening was a bit different. Our Compa—a dedicated guest liaison and experience designer—took us to the Picadero for an immersive dinner and traditional stable show. The meal consisted of the best of land and sea—cooked in overdried

coconut leaves on an open-fire and paired perfectly with the Tempranillo suggested by our server. Between courses, we enjoyed the lively Costa Rican horse show and got up close with the horses before retreating to our casita. We continued our adventure with the horses the next morning on a trail ride called Paso de Los Vaqueros through the nearby hills. During the two-hour ride, we found ourselves surrounded by majestic mountains and rode both on-trail and off-trail, thanks to our trusty wrangler. We had the unique opportunity to see Capuchin monkeys in the treetops along the ride (and apparently it was the first time the trailhands saw them on the property as well). Before we began our descent, we could see the full valley with cloud covered mountains up high and lower lying areas where our casita was below.

Our guide made sure to point out the property’s coffee farm— which boasts more than 7,000 plants—and Cananga Odorata (Ylang Ylang) trees—the trees that give Chanel No. 5 its signature scent. Before we began our treatments, we immersed ourselves in Casa de Aqua—a glass-walled oasis dedicated to purification and relaxation rituals. Each of THE WELL’s time-proven local healing traditions and cutting-edge science offerings include East-meets-West healing therapies, transformative treatments, expert-led health coaching and workshops, and more. We opted

for the Advanced Bodywork massage and The Skin Ritual facial treatment. Both treatments left us feeling relaxed and rejuvenated and ready for our next spa experience. We happened to be visiting while one of THE WELL’s Visiting Masters, Darren Austin Hall, a Sound Healer, Sacred Musician, Spiritual Teacher, and Sage from Toronto, Canada was there. Hall led us through a meditative journey of deep relaxation states through song and use of special instruments. It was the perfect end to our journey at Hacienda AltaGracia, leaving us ready to take on the morning flight home. Our journey home came too soon, as I could have stayed in Costa Rica forever. The local way of life and the culture and traditions that our guides and Compa were able to teach us about were fascinating and nice retreat from the hustle and bustle of home. It’s no wonder many of the experts at Hacienda AltaGracia have lived in the area their entire life and are passionate about it.
