n’s a m ir Cha ssage Me Dear Members, Warm greetings to all of you…As summer approaches, we at India Club also have heated up the activity levels….

Seven billion acts of goodness...

The region’s oldest and the biggest Badminton tournament has just concluded as I pen this note. In its 38th year, members will be glad to note that we have attracted over 700 entries, the largest so far in its history to play in 26 categories – we also saw 4 seeded players flown in from India and 4 from Malaysia to participate in the Super League. I am glad to see the huge response not only from the participants but also from the members who have been coming in huge numbers to witness the matches. Apart from Badminton, we are also looking at promoting cricket in a big way at the Club.

And have I done even one today... a long shot, nevertheless, quite feasible. Just think about it: If each one of us do even one act of goodness in a day, yes, just one act, we can collectively have Seven billion acts of goodness everyday. So was the message given by Mr. Ram Singhal in his talk which was held at the India Club.

The next couple of months will see major additions and renovations of a lot of sports and F & B outlets in the Club, which will enhance the quality of infrastructural facilities – there will be an elevator to go up to the gym along with a refurbished look, tennis courts are being re-laid and the restaurants will also don a new look. Space permitting, we are also looking at the viability of having a billiards room. We look forward to your valued suggestions to see how the Club can serve as a platform to promote educational activities and medical advice, two areas very close to my heart. We also are eager for your suggestions in case of improvisations in any area of the Club. You are welcome to pass on these suggestions to me or the general manager of the Club.

This and many more such events have seen a busy schedule at our Club, preceding the time everyone takes off on their annual summer break. Something that has kept all of us on tenterhooks is the UAE Open Badminton tournament with a record entry of over 700 local players and a few international ones too. Till we meet again, happy holidays folks. Stay cool and stay blessed !!

Mrs. Reena Kamlesh Hon. Vice Chairperson

Happy holidays to those of you who are travelling and for those of you who are in town, we have enough and more activities lined up during the summer to keep you busy…

Mr. Vasu Shroff Hon. Chairman

Movie – Dil Dhadakne Do

Best Letter

Any communique from our club is welcome and It was a pleasant surprise to receive an announcement of special screening of the movie Dil Dhadakne Do. At the Cinema Hall it was fun to see the bonhomie amongst members, the meetings, conversations and sharing of smiles and like the movie is a multi-starrer the club members also had the looks of stars. This coming together shows the great bonding and the beautiful idea of Club management to continue providing a platform for us to network and get entertained which is the essence of Club activities. After the club got us in Dil in Dhadakne Do mode, now it's time to say Dil Maange More. Thank you India Club , Keep the fun coming. Appreciated.

Though we have been members of the India Club for a long time now, this was the first time that I actually attended and experienced the spirit of Holi at the India Club. It was truly a “Holi” experience, just like back home. When the fire lights up and the sparks go up in the sky, the feeling of all the negativity being burnt up casts over our being. And with the celebrations and exuberance comes in the positivity and the welcoming of the newer and brighter side of life. The traditional and the modern approach, both nicely blended in the India Club atmosphere. Along with the prayers and the Pooja of the “Holi” fire, there were dances by groups of children and DJ also played music. Kids were busy playing with colour and water. Adults too joined in. There was jubilation all around.

Sudhakaran Nair

Membership No. 4469 Dear Mr. Vashu Shroff, Thank you very much for the wonderful party. It was an amazing experience for us! We enjoyed the Food as well as the Venue and Service. Wine selection was also Great. We are also thankful that you came personally to bless us.

Even the stalls had traditional items like hot jalebis, thandai and other delicacies which brought in the flavor of ‘Holi’. In the backdrop of the Holi fire, the smell of colour, water, burnt coconut Prasad, the delicacies and the closeness of loved ones lingered in the air.

We would like to also congratulate you upon your election to the Chairmanship of India Club. With Love & Regards,

It was then that I realized what I had actually been missing all these years!

S P O H S WORK

Pranic Healing workshop was organized by India Club and was conducted by Grand Master Choa Kok Sui on 14th April ’15. Topics included Pranic healing orientation, free healing camp of physical and emotional ailments and Stress relief meditation for an hour and a half. The event was well received, with over 70 members in attendance.

PRANIC HEALING

Pranic Healing is no touch, no drug energy based healing system that uses life energy or prana as the medium of healing. Pranic healing is non-invasive and complementary in nature. It is not meant to replace orthodox medicine. It will accelerate the rate of healing. The energy body, commonly known as the aura and its energy centers are healed by removing deceased energy. Chakras are energy centers that control and energise the vital organs. The chakras could malfunction because of internal or external factors. When they malfunction the organ they control also malfunctions. So in pranic healing life energy from the natural sources (air, the sun and the earth) is transferred to these energy centers and enable them function at optimal levels. This method is called cleansing. Pranic healing provides systematic treatment for several health problems such as Migraine, hepatitis, respiratory problems, problems of the skeletal and muscular system, arthiritis, spondylitis, digestive system issues, diabetes, hypertension, nervous system problems, eye problems, etc. It is also effective in healing psychological ailments such as stress, depression, anxiety, grief, etc.

STEM Education

Imagination is more important than knowledge - Albert Einstein The ever changing face of education has given birth to a totally new yet familiar concept of education called STEM education. Its application to real life situations gives it the edge over the traditional education system. Think about it - who would want to study a boring Science or Mathematics subject ? But, if the same is incorporated into technology, given that we live in a technologically advanced time, majority of students will love it.

STEM which stands for study in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics is a much awaited and welcome change from the traditional teacher centered classroom setup and focuses more on pro active learning. Its curriculum is more logical and emphasizes mainly on how to be creative and think out of the box. Not just to follow the academic pattern but to think critically and rationalize, something that will help the students go a long way in shaping their professional life as well. Before the discovery of STEM education, Science and Maths were taught as different subjects. Now the blend of the two has wonderful advantages as it can be used to complement the study of Engineering and Technology well.

Statistics show that STEM related jobs have grown by three times in the USA and about 72% of all UK businesses rely on people with STEM skills. In the UAE too, STEM education is to be introduced in Classrooms in the Public schools in an attempt to attract the Students towards the fields of Science and Technology. Fun Robotics (also conducted at India Club) is the first KHDA approved specialized Robotics Centre in Dubai which specializes in combining STEM education with a fun learning aspect. Hence it can be safely said that STEM education is the future in education and the demand for STEM related jobs is on the increase worldwide. Worldwide research also proves that the fastest growing and highest paying jobs will definitely be in STEM related fields, in the near future.

Health File

India Club, as a part of its awareness-building initiative in the field of Healthcare, is dedicating a page exclusively for this topic from this issue onwards...

You are never too young or too old to take care of your heart.

Preventing heart disease (and all cardiovascular diseases) means making smart choices now that will pay off for the rest of your life.

Nonsmokers are up to 30 percent more likely to develop heart disease or lung cancer from secondhand smoke exposure at home or work.

Lack of exercise, a poor diet and other bad habits can take their toll over the years. Anyone at any age can benefit from simple steps to keep their heart healthy during each decade of life. Here’s how:

In Your 30s

All Age Groups

• Make heart-healthy living a family affair. Create and sustain heart-healthy habits in your kids and you’ll reap the benefits, too. Spend less time on the couch and more time on the move. Explore a nearby park on foot or bike. Shoot some hoops or walk the dog.

No matter what your age, everyone can benefit from a healthy diet and adequate physical activity. • Choose a he althy eating plan. The food you eat can decrease your risk of heart disease and stroke. Choose foods low in saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, sodium and added sugars and sweeteners. As part of a healthy diet, eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, fiber-rich whole grains, fish (preferably oily fish at least twice per week), nuts, legumes and seeds. Also try eating some meals without meat. Select fat-free and low-fat dairy products and lean meats and poultry (skinless). Limit sugar-sweetened beverages.

Juggling family and career leaves many adults with little time to worry about their hearts. Here are some ways to balance all three.

• Know your family history. Shake your family tree to learn about heart health. Having a relative with heart disease increases your risk, especially if the relative is a parent or sibling. That means you need to focus on risk factors you can control by maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, not smoking and eating right. Also, keep your doctor informed about any heart problems you learn about in your family.

• Be physically active. You can slowly work up to at least 2½ hours (150 minutes) of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity (like brisk walking) every week or an hour and 15 minutes (75 minutes) of vigorous intensity aerobic physical activity (such as jogging or running) or a combination of both every week. Additionally, on two or more days a week you need muscle-strengthening activities that work all major muscle groups (legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest shoulders and arms).

• Tame your stress. Long-term stress causes an increase in heart rate and blood pressure that may damage the artery walls. Learning stress management techniques benefits your body and your quality of life. Try deep breathing exercises and find time each day to do something you enjoy. Giving back through volunteering also does wonders for knocking out stress.

In Your 20s

If heart health hasn’t been a priority, don’t worry. Healthy choices you make now can strengthen your heart for the long haul. Understand why you need to make lifestyle changes and have the confidence to make them. Then, tackle them one at a time.

Getting smart about your heart early on puts you far ahead of the curve. The things you do — and don’t — are a tell-tale sign of how long and how well you’re going to live. • Find a doctor and have regular wellness exams. Healthy people need doctors, too. Establishing a relationship with a physician means you can start heart-health screenings now. Talk to your doctor about your diet, lifestyle and checking your blood pressure, cholesterol, heart rate, body mass index and waist circumference. You may also need your blood sugar checked if you are pregnant, overweight or have diabetes. • Be physically active. It’s a lot easier to be active and stay active if you start at a young age. “If you’re accustomed to physical activity, you’ll sustain it.Keep your workout routine interesting by mixing it up and finding new motivators. • Don’t smoke and avoid secondhand smoke. If you picked up smoking as a teen, it’s time to quit smoking. Even exposure to secondhand smoke poses a serious health hazard.

32 India Club

In Your 40s

• Watch your weight. In your 40s, your metabolism starts slowing down. But you can avoid weight gain by following a heart-healthy diet and getting plenty of exercise. The trick is to find a workout routine you enjoy. If you need motivation to get moving, find a workout buddy. • Have your blood sugar level checked. In addition to blood pressure checks and other heart-health screenings, you should have a fasting blood glucose test by the time you’re 45. This first test serves as a baseline for future tests, which you should have every three years. Testing may be done earlier or more often if you are overweight, diabetic or at risk for becoming diabetic. • Don’t brush off snoring. Listen to your sleeping partner’s complaints about your snoring. One in five adults has at least mild sleep apnea, a condition that causes pauses in breathing during sleep. If not properly treated,

sleep apnea can contribute to high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke.

In Your 50s Unlike the emergence of wrinkles and gray hair, what you can’t see as you get older is the impact aging has on your heart. So starting in the 50s, you need to take extra steps. • Eat a healthy diet. It’s easy to slip into some unhealthy eating habits, so refresh your eating habits eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, fiber-rich whole grains, fish (preferably oily fish-at least twice per week), nuts, legumes and seeds and try eating some meals without meat. • Learn the warning signs of a heart attack and stroke. Now is the time to get savvy about symptoms. Not everyone experiences sudden numbness with a stroke or severe chest pain with a heart attack. And heart attack symptoms in women can be different than men. • Follow your treatment plan. By now, you may have been diagnosed with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes or other conditions that increase your risk for heart disease or stroke. Lower your risk by following your prescribed treatment plan, including medications and lifestyle and diet changes.

In Your 60s+ With age comes an increased risk for heart disease. Your blood pressure, cholesterol and other heart-related numbers tend to rise. Watching your numbers closely and managing any health problems that arise — along with the requisite healthy eating and exercise — can help you live longer and better. • Have an ankle-brachial index test. Starting in your 60s, an ankle-brachial index test should be done every one to two years as part of a physical exam. The test assesses the pulses in the feet to help diagnose peripheral artery disease (PAD), a lesser-known cardiovascular disease in which plaque builds up in the leg arteries. • Watch your weight. Your body burns fewer calories as you get older. Excess weight causes your heart to work harder and increases the risk for heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol. Exercising regularly and eating smaller portions of nutrient-rich foods may help you maintain a healthy weight. • Learn the warning signs of a heart attack and stroke. Heart attack symptoms in women can be different than men. Knowing when you’re having a heart attack or stroke means you’re more likely to get immediate help. Quick treatment can save your life and prevent serious disability.

Play like a Champion

The last one month has seen us on literally our toes. Apart from the regular events, the largest Badminton tournament in the region in its 38th year, which attracted 712 entries, was held at our Club.

Simple acts of kindness But what gladdened our heart the most was the exhibition matches played by students from the Special Needs Future Development Centre and the Dubai Autism Centre.

Participants from Special Needs Future Development Centre and the Dubai Autism Centre along with officials and organisers

We also had blue collared workers from the Dulsco & Emrill Labour Camps playing exhibition matches. All the participants were given a medal, certificate and a special gift for participation. We intend getting more schools and labour camps involved in the tournament next year.

Quality at its best…

Officials from India Cl ub, Badminton Tourn Committee Members ament Orga along with the Child ren & Officials from SN nising F Development Centr e

The half yearly audits for re-certification of ISO 14001:2004 and ISO 9001:2008 were held recently and as expected we came out with flying colours. India Club is the first Club in the region to obtain these certifications in 2001 and 2012 respectively. Reena Kamlesh, officials from India Club along with employees from Dulsco and Emrill

We plan on going in for the HACCP (Hazard analysis and critical control points) certification shortly along with the DHDA award next year. At the Club, quality is a way of life because we want nothing but the best for our members.

Happy Holidays… India Club Officials with the ISO Audit Team
