Battlefield Tour for The Porch Project On August 8th & 9th the Porch Project were fortunate enough to be able to take seven young people to France on a two-day WW1 Battlefield Tour. This was made available to us by Mark Brennan and the Hadleigh Great War Centenary Fund. What a wonderful opportunity for local young people to witness first-hand the great sacrifice and bravery of their local forefathers. After the excitement of the Eurotunnel, a new experience for many involved, we headed into Belgium for our first stop at a small cemetery. The whole trip focused around Hadleigh men who had fought and lost their lives in the Great War. Mark had fantastic information about each man, photos, letters home and postcards, which made it ever more poignant. We placed a small cross at each grave we visited to commemorate the Hadleigh men. Our next stop was Ypres (or ‘Wipers’ to the British soldiers) and the Menin Gate. This was a good chance for everyone to soak up the culture and grab an ice cream. Here we found one of the young people’s Great Great Great Uncle’s name commemorated on the Menin Gate itself. A hugely important monument for fallen soldiers in the region. Back on the bus we headed toward our accommodation in the Somme region. Even the building we stayed in was a former British officer’s headquarters complete with trenches. Fed and watered we bedded down for the night, well eventually after numerous “lights out” requests. Our second day involved travelling down the western front visiting various Commonwealth Cemeteries. This really bought home just how many people across the world were and still are affected by the Great war. After a spot of well-earned lunch, young Tyler Hansen volunteered to dress up in full WW1 soldier gear and we learned a little more about the conditions the men had to fight in. Continued P5...

WW1 Battlefield Tour for members of the Porch Project If you’ve ever used the phrase “kick the bucket go on google and find its origins. As we meandered back North nearer to Calais and home we visited another few key areas, one of which being an 80-foot-wide and 60foot-deep bomb crater, that was a sight to behold. We then concluded our trip in Thiepval. Here stands an enormous Memorial to the missing, listing the names of over 72,000 British & South African servicemen who died during the battles of the Somme. The whole trip and all of its emotions culminated here. The sheer size and presence of the place certainly had a powerful impact on all the young people. It has to be said there was a few of us moved to tears. What an amazing way to end this trip, we really had all learned so much and firmly placed our thoughts and feelings alongside those few Brave Hadleigh men that gave so much for us all. Great memories for all involved and the biggest thank you to Mark Brennan

Green Man Workshop Success

With the help of the Hadleigh Library, it was the youngsters turn to be involved in the town’s Festival of Gardening and Art. The Library team had organised a Green Man mask making workshop. Before the cutting and sticking could begin the children, armed with a Green Man question sheet, had to search for the answers. These could be found on several paper leaves scattered around the room. Once that had been completed they could get down to the serious business of mask making. The results were most effective and it’s hoped that some of the junior artists will wear their creations at the Magical Picnic soon after. A big thank you to all who came along, especially Paula Roberts and Lynda Garrod who kept the glue on the table and patiently helped the young mask makers. JD

Can you help? This pictured bench situated on Lady Lane has been brought to our attention inscribed ‘In Memory of Cllr. Douglas G. Simmons M.B.E. 1986’. Unfortunately we have no record of this Councillor neither does Babergh District Council or Sudbury Town Council. We have found on the internet that he died in Sudbury but he is not buried there. So we have come to a dead end. If anyone locally knows anything about this gentlemen and his bench please they could contact Elaine Root at Hadleigh Town Council. The Boule-in’s French Harvest “I can’t believe another magical summer has passed and we’re welcoming in the long September evenings: fruit on the trees and our quince (Coing) harvest” says Cathy Bullen, proprietor of The Boulein, Bildeston’s Stylish French Collectables store. “Our autumn fair, Fête du Coing, is named in homage to Cotignac - our Provencale village - which is famed for it’s quince harvest and festival” The Boule-in’s Fête du Coing (Saturday 9th - Sunday 17th September) has it’s own harvest of beautiful, authentically design-led decorative pieces to style your home and garden this autumn: exquisite antique mirrors and crystal chandeliers sit alongside french rustique, glorious gardenia as well as furniture with 1950’s industrial vibe. “We’ve spent most of this summer in Provence which has allowed us time to enjoy sourcing many beautiful new pieces: It’s a real adventure for us - we try and explore somewhere new to increase our knowledge of the area as well as the treasures we uncover”. Looking at the array of stunning new pieces they’ve brought home there’s no doubt their adventures have been profitable! Be charmed by the delightful barn and garden setting and take time to enjoy discovering your very own oh la la treasure… Fête du Coing: Saturday 9th - Sunday 17th (10am - 6pm daily) 77 High Street Bildeston, IP7 7ER www.boule-in.co.uk

Suffolk Police & Crime Commissioner visits The Porch Project On July 28th the Porch Project were very pleased to welcome Tim Passmore, the Suffolk Police and Crime Commissioner to their temporary offices in Corks Lane. He spent time with the Youth Work Team hearing about the work they are doing and the facilities the Porch offers the young people of Hadleigh, Great Cornard and surrounding areas. Secret Ballot: Should the Hadleigh Steering Group have a formal constitution? Results of ballot: NO – 12, YES – 3. Proposal Agreed: to add the following additional point to the Steering Group’s Terms of Reference: “Hadleigh Steering Group does not generate any income or bid for any funding on behalf of any local groups or organisations.” Proposal Agreed: Not to change and retain the name Hadleigh Steering Group Updates: The Wool Town’s Association: Objective to define a new Tourism region. Proactive and reciprocal role between 5 locations across the region. To gain support for signage, Wool Towns Guide Book, social media and Apps. On Tuesday 26th September there will be a media launch of the Wool Towns Business Plan at Kentwell Hall. PDF copies available. Visit Hadleigh website: The website will be 1 year old next month and has had 18,000 views to date. The ‘info@’visthadleigh Suffolk.co.uk email has started to receive visitor enquiries. A letter has recently been given to High St Businesses asking for feedback and advising of sponsorship needed for 2018. Sean Garnham raised concerns regarding the impact of the website. New Town Guides: The first ‘Walking with Trees’ town tour took place on 29th July, and 15 people attended. This was well received. Dates for scheduled tours can be found at visithadleighsuffolk.co.uk. In support of National Heritage Weekend (9-10 Sept) the new guides, as is customary, will offer tours - Past & Present and Walking with Trees FREE. Tidy Town Volunteers: The group is going from strength to strength and has more new volunteers, with at least 8 or 9 people on every litter pick, going out at least twice if not three times a week. Proposal: Anita Young asked if it was possible to have a sign made up which said ‘Hadleigh is a Tidy Town’ or similar. Christmas Event Group: Mike Turley updated that insurance is now all covered. Chamber of Commerce - Hadleigh Welcome: This was launched approximately 8 weeks ago, and nominees are now well into 3 figures. Issues for the Amenities Log: A number of issues were discussed and noted. These will be raised at the next meeting. Referring to the Business Plan for the Wool Towns Association, it was felt quite strongly that Hadleigh needs a hotel and possibly conference centre too. It was felt that the Corks Lane site would make an excellent location for either a Premier Inn or Travelodge, or possibly even a boutique style hotel. Next Meeting: Monday 4th September 2017 at Hadleigh Pool and Leisure Please Note at the later start time of 6pm - 7.45pm to help enable more businesses to attend. Main Agenda item: Public Amenities and the future of Corks Lane Complex. We will be pleased to welcome Peter Garrett BDC Public Realm, Jennie Jenkins Leader of BDC and Louise Rawsthorne Assistant Director Investment & Commercial Delivery If you have any suggestions for Agenda items please contact the Chairman, in good time, before the meeting. snowdonjane@hotmail.co.uk

We’ll get by with a little help from our friends We may have just finished the summer holidays, but our thoughts are already turning to a magical Christmas organised by The Christmas Present Trust. Now in its third year, the trust offers a full traditional dinner and afternoon’s entertainment on Christmas Day for those who, for whatever reason, are unable to be with family or friends. In addition to the TSB, who have adopted the scheme as a local organisation worthy of support, we also have the backing of The George pub, The Co-op, Adnams, Morrisons and Hadleigh Maid. Because we know we can cover the catering thanks to the generous support of these local businesses, we are now focusing our attention on specifics to make the day go with a real swing. Our first aim is to widen the publicity for the event. It is important to reiterate that The Christmas Present Trust is not affiliated to any religious, political, charitable or cultural organization. However, we are indebted to local media, especially the amazing team at Hadleigh Community News. This year we are trying to reach out to the local villages around Hadleigh to ensure all those who would benefit from the event are aware of what is going on. The best way to do this is through word of mouth, and this is where you come in. Please can you pass the word about to friends, organisations and clubs, or get in touch with us if you know of someone who may benefit. No questions are asked, no assumptions drawn. In addition to this, we want to ensure that all those who wish to celebrate with us on Christmas Day are able to do so regardless of mobility. To this end, we are inviting any volunteers who may able to assist with transporting guests to and/or from the event to get in touch. We may also have funds available to hire community transport and private vehicles. Please do contact us if you think you may be able to help. Our third aim for this year is to ensure that our guests and our volunteers have a wonderful afternoon of festive fun. We have been fortunate enough in the past to have highly accomplished musicians, and last year we had VIP Balloons to provide seasonal cheer. If you can sing, play an instrument, provide comedy, magic or indeed any other form of suitable entertainment, and you are willing to give an hour or more of your time over the Christmas period, we would love to hear from you. If you want to volunteer we need helpers on Christmas Eve to decorate the new look Ansell Centre, on Christmas Day to greet, serve and chat with our guests and on Boxing Day to clear up. Should you wish to make a financial donation these can be accepted by the lovely people at the Hadleigh branch of the Ipswich Building Society. However, without guests the event is pointless, so do get in touch if you or someone you know wants an invitation. There will be a meeting of volunteers in early October so keep reading your Community News. We can be contacted either by phone on 01473 829246 or by e-mail at hadleighsimon@gmail.com. Day 1 – London to Dunkirk 6.00am on the 19th July after a night of thunderstorms 133 nervous but enthusiastic cyclists set off from Blackheath Common. Passing through the outskirts of London it wasn’t long before the cyclists were on quieter roads which lead them into rural Kent and onto Tonbridge, then across the hills of the North Downs to Dover for the ferry crossing, everyone appreciated the time out of the saddle after cycling 85 undulating miles. Once docked at Dunkirk there was a short cycle ride to the overnight accommodation, a good night’s rest was required ready for the early start of day 2. Day 2 Dunkirk – Cambrai This was the longest day in the saddle but the terrain was mainly flat. The route passed through small villages and farmland towards the Belgian border, then through the region where there was a great deal of WW1 action. This area used to be part of Flanders, many place names were more Flemish than French. The days ride finished heading southeast; there were a few hills before reaching Cambrai. After cycling 104 miles into a headwind the ride had proven harder than imagined. Day 3 Cambria – Soissons A shorter distance today but hillier terrain with the headwind still present, the route passed through small villages and then onto wider boulevards through historic towns with striking churches and town halls. The final section of the ride passed through an area involved in the WW1 battles of the Aisne and many villages had cemeteries and memorials to the fallen. Then there was the most challenging hill of the ride, this didn’t prove pleasant with the accumulation of mileage in the legs. Fortunately the ride into Soissons was a wonderful descent which meant the legs had the opportunity to spin out after cycling 70 hilly miles. Day 4 Soissons – Paris The final day of cycling headed southwest with a few short sharp hills then the roads rolled gently along as busier roads approached. It was then the suburbs of Paris were in sight with the Eiffel Tower and the Sacre’ Coeur standing out on the skyline. Reaching the suburb of St. Dennis then approaching the River Seine following its northern esplanade in the shadows of the Bois du Boulogne. At this point the cyclists were grouped together to ride to the Pont d’lena and finished beneath the lofty arches of the Eiffel Tower. We did it! What a team with 350miles cycled and £280,000 raised for Alzheimer’s Society including £2,500 personally, thank you to everyone that donated and supported me along my fundraising and cycling journey for this worthy cause. Fidelis Activity News Lunch Bunch Diners thoroughly enjoyed delicious home cooked food at The Bull at Brantham. With its large garden overlooking the River Stour and welcoming staff, this 16th century family run pub is the perfect place for lunch. Even though the group ordered a variety of dishes all meals came together and freshly cooked to perfection. Scrumptious desserts completed our two course meal for £15.95. Sheila Parker not only enjoyed being a high kicking Tiller girl and member of the Vernons vocalist group but she also had the pleasure of working with some of the most famous pop stars of the 50’s and 60’s. These experiences plus growing up in the same Liverpool street as Beatle Paul McCartney made for a most interesting, lively talk. Members loved her singing and humorous anecdotes as they provided a fascinating glimpse of life as a member of these two iconic groups and Sheila and Paul McCartney’s childhood.

ZOR Boutique AT KERSEY MILL

Columbine Hall The picturesque moated house, Columbine Hall, was the chosen venue for the group’s recent outing. The extensive estate was bought by Hew Stevenson & Leslie Geddes-Brown in 1993. Since then they have discovered, restored and sometimes re-created many of the property’s hidden features and conquered the acres of wilderness surrounding it. Although the Hall is a miscellany of architectural features some dating back over 600 years, it is the eclectic mix of its contents which are truly fascinating. The guided tour was all the more interesting for being led by owners, Hew and Leslie. They took great delight in giving members the stories behind the quirky building and their personal collection of object d’art. The tour was followed by refreshments in the West Barn which appears on the Hall’s 1741 estate map. Today this ancient timbered hall is a popular venue for weddings and other social events. The rain held off long enough for a brief visit to their equally unusual gardens. JD

Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre This premises scored 5 out of 5 stars Very high standards of food safety management. Fully compliant with food safety legislation

The start of a new year for our school age riders, we are so excited to see you all again and to hear about your new classes. Even our adult riders are embarking on new challenges, some of them aiming to get more qualifications, some of them trying for certificates, and some just wanting to enjoy the contact with horses again after a long summer break. For those of you who are new to Shelley, a big welcome! I write my blog from the ‘quiet room’ in which I am firmly anchored, facing the yard that I can spy through the door. It is an interesting position to be in; my sister simulator Babs is much older and smaller than me but she works just as hard because she is easier to mount for some of our older riders who use the hoist. We may be machines but our action replicates that of a real horse. As I am more sophisticated than Babs I actually look rather handsome, (see the photo of me) and my riders can use the normal aids to make me change pace etc. So if you are coming up to the yard for any reason please come in to our room and meet us, we love to show off. As is always the case, we should love to have more human help too. If you are suddenly an empty nester with your darling last child safely launched, or your big four year old starting school this term, do think about doing a couple of hours a week here with us, you will be surprised at how good it feels to be helping the Shelley team do what we do! You get training on the job, so people who don’t usually ‘do’ horses are as welcome as anyone else. If you don’t ‘do’ people either, why not join the maintenance team and be out on your own in the fields listening to the kestrels? It’s a tough choice I guess; luckily for me riders and volunteers come to me so I don’t have to stir my stumps to get involved. We are looking forward to the Sponsored Ride here on 16th, may the weather be kind! Website: www.rda-east.org.uk/shelley.html Telephone: 01473 824172

Brett Valley Review Issue 1 (Summer 2017) A new local history magazine now covers villages through which the River Brett flows in South Suffolk from its headstreams at Cockfield, Brettenham and Hitcham to its confluence with the River Stour at Higham. Each halfyearly edition will contain a miscellany of articles about people, places and events of the past. Not every village will appear in every magazine but it is hoped that you will enjoy reading about neighbouring communities. Illustrated throughout with old and modern photographs, family trees and maps, every issue will have a picture feature and the story behind a village sign. This first issue relates how the gospelbook of a Scottish queen was put into a churchyard library for safe-keeping and what happened to this manuscript volume once M. R. James (the famous ghost-story writer) discovered it. Also featured are how a couple of black plastic bin bags helped to trace ownership of a manor and why the owner of a watermill was becoming increasingly exasperated by the creation of a landscape park by his neighbour. Your letters, photographs and memories of communities and the surrounding countryside in the Brett Valley during the recent past and artcles relevant to their history are most welcome. On sale now price £5 at Bildeston - Bank House Stores and Brook Farm Studio; Brent Eleigh - Cafe Como; Hadleigh - Avis the Newsagent and Idler Bookshop; Monks Eeigh - Corn Craft and ThePost Office Stores; Semer - Hollow Trees Farm Shop or from Sue Andrews, 17 Manor Road, Bildeston, Ipswich, Suffolk IP7 7BG, price £6.50 to include postage.

How can you help speed up the process of buying a house? They say there is nothing quite as stressful as moving house – and it’s true, the process can be long and arduous. There are several aspects to the deal that can cause complications: Is there a chain? Are you buying with a mortgage? Are you buying a leasehold property? However, there are a number of practical tips that you can employ to quicken the transaction and reduce unnecessary irritation. How does the buying process work? Buying or selling a house can be a bit of a jigsaw puzzle – each piece has to fit into place before the transaction is complete. Once the buyer and seller have agreed on a price, your solicitor will receive the details of the purchase from the estate agent, make contact with the seller’s solicitor, examine the sale and purchase contract, perform the necessary searches and if necessary raise any enquiries with the sellers Solicitor. Your solicitor will then advise you when it’s time to sign on the dotted line, before agreeing a date for the exchange of contracts and for completion (move in day). Your deposit will be sent to the seller’s solicitor, along with the signed contract. On completion day, your solicitor will pay the balance to the seller’s solicitor and, once the money is received, the keys are yours. An average conveyancing transaction takes 8-12 weeks from start to finish. How can you help speed up the process? Ways that you can help quicken the transaction include: • Once your offer has been accepted, advise your solicitor immediately. • Communicate with the estate agent and your solicitor any holiday dates early on in the transaction - this will enable your conveyancer to send you anything that requires a signature. • Get the searches on a purchase paid for and ordered as soon as your solicitor receives draft contracts. • If you have any specific enquiries about the property, make sure you tell your solicitor immediately. What about if you are selling? You don’t need to wait until you find a buyer for your property to start the conveyancing process. It will help speed up proceedings if you start filling out the standard forms and collating all relevant supporting documents as soon as your property is placed on the market. Having these documents completed in advance means that when you accept an offer, your solicitor is able to send out the contract pack to the purchaser’s solicitor immediately upon receipt of the agents particulars. How can Gotelee help? Our residential conveyancing solicitors, based in based in Hadleigh, Ipswich, Felixstowe, Woodbridge and Melton, will ensure that your sale, purchase, or other property matters, are dealt with expertly and efficiently. Gotelee’s conveyancing team is accredited to the Conveyancing Quality Scheme, the Law Society’s quality standard for solicitors. A children’s physiotherapist specialises in treating children from birth up to the age of 18 and has additional knowledge of childhood diseases with the expertise to assess and devise management programs suitable for varying stages of development. Ruth is HCPC registered and is an active member of the Association of Paediatric Chartered Physiotherapists (APCP). Whilst she has a keen interest in the early years and neurological conditions, she has a wide breadth of experience across the field of paediatrics. Ruth qualified from Glasgow Caledonian University in 2008 and has specialised in Children's Physiotherapy since then. Initially, working for Capability Scotland, a charity supporting children with complex needs, she worked under fully certified Bobath therapists and she herself completed the introductory course. Whilst working for the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow with the respiratory and neurology teams, she gained a huge amount of experience rehabilitating children with conditions such as cancer, cystic fibrosis, cardiac and neurological complaints. Whilst living in Gibraltar she gained further experience and expertise treating children with musculoskeletal, sports, chronic fatigue and obesity issues, to name but a few. Ruth loves the outdoors and can often be seen in the countryside walking or running and after having had a baby last year she is getting back to her other love of Yoga. Ruth will hold clinics at our Hadleigh practice on Monday afternoons with home visits by appointment. www.hadleighphysio.co.uk

The Bell Inn

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk At this time of the year, as our towns and villages come alive with visitors, we are reminded of the importance of tourism to our local communities and economy. The constituency reaches from the undisturbed coastal beauty of the Shotley peninsula in the east, to Clare, one of our most distinctive wool towns, in the west. I have been working with groups from across South Suffolk who are coming together to raise the profile of their area. In Shotley, residents have been fundraising to regenerate their 122-year-old historic pier. As Suffolk's only remaining railway pier this project celebrates our coastal trading history and holds an ambitious vision for its future tourism offer. On the other side of South Suffolk, I recently attended the launch of the 'Visit Clare' initiative. By highlighting the wool trading history of Suffolk's smallest town, and linking with our other best preserved wool towns - Lavenham, Long Melford and Hadleigh - they are increasing the footprint of our area in the tourism market. Due to enormous wealth that surrounded the trade of wool in the 12th -15th centuries our wool towns are lined with timber-framed buildings and boast elegant churches. More recently, one of these streets famously made it into the final Harry Potter film. Now a major tourist attraction, the De Vere House in Lavenham is currently heralded as the second most photographed door in the UK, proceeded only by No.10! When you add these projects to the fantastic planned development of Gainsborough's House in Sudbury it is clear that our tourism sector is extremely vibrant. As a county, we are already attracting a high level of tourism with data showing that an estimated 52,000 holiday visits were made to Suffolk in 2016 by tourists from abroad. Compared to Norfolk for example, where there were 36,000 holiday visits in the same period, Suffolk is clearly working hard to attract individuals from around the world. In 2016 overseas visitors spent ÂŁ62 million in Suffolk alone. In addition to our guests from further afield we also attract many hundreds of thousands of domestic tourists each year. By working together it is crucial that we continue to promote the bountiful and unique attractions of our area.

Walter Wright How Will The Government ‘U Turn’ Affect You? Talk To Us Profit from our Experience Hadleigh Leisure Centre Highlands Road, Hadleigh IP7 5HU

Phone 01473 824441

Government performs a partial ‘U turn’ over Making Tax Digital - but many businesses will still have to report digitally In a surprise move, on 13 July, HMRC announced that their plan to force all businesses and landlords (with the exceptions for micro businesses) to keep records digitally and to report income and expenses on a quarterly basis had been ‘watered down’. Mark Wallace, tax partner at Walter Wright, explains more. As a recap, what were their initial plans? HMRC had been planning to introduce laws which would require all businesses and landlords (except for those with sales less than £10,000 per annum) to keep their accounting records in a digital form, such as a spreadsheet or a computerised bookkeeping program. In addition, a summary of income and expenses would have to be reported on a quarterly basis; a final ‘end of year’ report would then be given with the total figures for the financial year. A typical business would have had to make five returns in a year for each business. As an example, someone who had a business but also owned a buy to let property might have been required to make ten reports (five for each). What has happened? The initial plans were to come into effect from April 2018. HMRC initially were planning to issue a consultation document in the Spring of 2016; this was delayed due to the Brexit vote and was finally issued in August 2016. HMRC received over 1,100 written responses and over 1,200 responses to an online survey and it was not until January 2017 that they were able to respond. They drafted the legislation to bring the new regime into effect but this was dropped from the 2017 Finance Bill following Teresa May’s decision to call a ‘snap’ election. Meanwhile there had been concern voiced that there would not be enough time to test the new software and systems, particularly as at the same time businesses were having to plan for ‘Brexit’. What are the new plans? The new plans have been ‘watered down’ considerably. The changes will not be introduced until April 2019, and only businesses which are VAT registered will have to keep their records digitally. However, the way that VAT returns are submitted will change and the VAT return will have to be submitted using the computerised software; the existing Government website that many businesses use to submit their figures will no longer be available. Alternatively, businesses can nominate an accountant or bookkeeper to maintain the records and submit the figures on their behalf. Meanwhile the initial plans for quarterly reporting and digital record keeping will be ‘slowed down’. Businesses will not be required to report digitally until ‘at least 2020’ although they can ‘opt in’ early if they so wish. What should I do now? If you are a business keeping manual paper records and are VAT registered you should be planning to move to a computerised bookkeeping system by April 2019. If you use a computerised record keeping system you should contact the software company to ensure that it is compatible with HMRC’s new systems. Mark Wallace can be contacted at Walter Wright, 89 High Street, Hadleigh on 01473 822143, or mark@walterwright.co.uk

The Bentwaters Cold war Museum is holding a special Open day on 17th September 2017 to celebrate both the 10th Anniversary of the museum and the unveiling of the A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft exhibit following restoration to the colours and markings whilst it operated from RAF Bentwaters. The base was in operation from 1944 to 1993 with initially the RAF and then the USAF from 1951, RAF Bentwaters played an important role in both WWII and the Cold War. The museum was opened in 2007 in the USAF Command Post and had grown to include a number of aircraft types that represent the Cold War. Of great significance was the acquisition of the A-10, affectionately known as the “Warthog”, in early 2016. The USAF stationed 6 squadrons of A-10s at RAF Bentwaters and the nearby base of RAF Woodbridge under the command of the 81st Tactical Fighter Wing which was the largest wing in the USAF at the time in the 1980’s. It was a familiar sight in the skies of Suffolk and many locals often speak with fondness of this iconic aircraft. The Open Day will include an opportunity to view a special exhibition of the museum history. Other attractions are a display of classic American and British cars, military vehicles, fire engines, re-enactors in combat uniforms, USAF police vehicles, Birds of Prey display and hot and cold refreshments. Opening times are 10.00 to 4.00 and admission is the normal museum entrance fee of £5.00 for adults, children free and concessions £4.00. This is a great opportunity to see the A-10 and relive the past of Bentwaters and Woodbridge.

Above the Parapet - County Council Report It is a great privilege for me to represent the townsfolk of Hadleigh division as their County Councillor at Endeavour House. This isn’t the first time in my adult life that I’ve stuck my head ‘above the parapet’, so to speak, to see where and how I can be a positive influence on issues that affect a group, community, or activity. No doubt I may again experience some incoming flak for doing so. So far in this role I have met with numerous Hadleigh interest groups and discussed how I can assist with their concerns and issues. Also, many residents have contacted me with their particular matters, many of which have been Cllr Mick Fraser highways related. I encourage that any problems with our roads and highways should be reported, so that they may be addressed. I commend the easy to use fault reporting link for this use: https://www.suffolk.gov.uk/roads-and-transport/ I would like to use this column to report news from SCC that may be of interest to many of the townsfolk both locally and county wide. For example, SCC has just launched its new Our Priorities document, which is accessible on its website; www.suffolk.gov.uk and it’s refreshing to read that the main focus of this council includes improving our children’s educational attainment and the health, care and wellbeing of its residents. My monthly surgery will be on the third Saturday of the month, the next one being on 16th September 2017 from 11am until noon in the Sharron Elliott room of the Royal British Legion Club, George St. mick.fraser@suffolk.gov.uk mob: 0793 551 2591

Do you suffer from a health condition and have been struggling to find lasting relief? Have you ever considered trying Acupuncture? Local resident Ben Hymas (fully qualified, insured and a member of the British Acupuncture Council) is opening Hadleigh Acupuncture & Wellness in Queen Street this September. Acupuncture is well known as a proven treatment pathway for pain and many other conditions. It is a safe, natural and painless procedure that directly influences the central nervous system (amongst other mechanisms of action) to promote self healing. Ben's training background includes western physiology and pathology which allows him to understand and convey issues, using modern explanations rather than using an ancient Chinese “energy flow explanation. Therefore despite initial perceptions this intervention does not require 'belief' and has a lot of good quality peer reviewed western evidence to support its use, your body will respond naturally. A common road block to trying acupuncture is fear of needles and the worry they will hurt; Acupuncture needles are 15x thinner than a medical blood test syringe and can barely be felt. There are various conditions that we treat successfully in clinical practice, to find out what is involved get in contact and book a free no obligation consultation. Come along to the Grand Opening of Hadleigh Hall Nursing Home Former world boxing champion Barry McGuigan will be celebrity guest at the grand opening of Hadleigh Hall Nursing Home from 11.30am to 2pm on Tuesday, September 26. Local people are invited to come along to the event at Kingsley Healthcare’s newest home, in Friars Road, Hadleigh, to meet the former featherweight and share memories of his famous fight nights. Manager Emma Beckett said: “We are thrilled to have secured the services of such a popular celebrity. “So we can know numbers for catering, it is essential that people contact the home by September 19 if they wish to attend. By doing that they will also secure entry in our prize draw.” Guests will be able to enjoy a free barbecue and music from a local string quartet. The Mayor of Hadleigh, Yvonne Free, will also be attending the event with local health and social care professionals, along with special invitees from the town. Kingsley took over the home at the beginning of the year and the first new residents have moved in following a complete refurbishment. Ahead of the grand opening, the public will have another opportunity to look around Hadleigh Hall Nursing Home at a coffee morning on September 13, from 10.30am to 12.30pm. All are welcome. Vintage cars and other vehicles proved a big attraction as Newton Green Golf Club celebrated its 110th birthday in style. Members and guests turned out on a sunny afternoon to enjoy the sight of rare vehicles all owned by members and their friends. Although not the oldest vehicle on display, the 1934 Austin taxi which for decades was used to transport Sudburians – along with Royalty and Winston Churchill – to important engagements, proved a popular attraction. The vehicle, which is still in the ownership of its original family, has 522,523 miles on its milometer, and golfer Di Cunningham won £50 as the person closest to guessing the reading. With music from the Victory Jazz Band, a display of golf memorabilia and cream teas, the day provided a splendid opening to the club’s annual golf week.

Ken’s SESAW News Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare Reg charity no 1124029

This year we celebrate 25 years of animal rescue at Leavenheath, culminating (big word for a little dog!) in our Open Day and Fun Dog Show at the end of July. Ex SESAW dogs returned with their owners to show us how well they were doing and the magnificent sum of £4650 was raised. Everyone was completely shattered but very happy by the end of the day and more dogs have since been rehomed. Grateful thanks go to all who supported SESAW and to the hard working volunteers who made it all happen. The money raised will help care for many residents at SESAW including a newly arrived pair of Kune Kune pigs. Although their owner died, Peggy and Bob settled quickly, in time to meet the Open Day visitors. Looking ahead, we are having a “Barking Basement” Weekend Sale at SESAW, 10-1pm 23/24th September and a £1 Sale at the Ansell Centre, Hadleigh, 11-2pm on Saturday 14th October. If you are going further afield try our Autumn Sale, 11-3pm Sunday 17th September at Gt. Bentley Village Hall CO7 8LG. Must close now it’s time for my evening trot around the garden. News from The Station ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR IN THE TOWN I was born and bred in this town, many of you reading this grew up with me. Did we break into other people’s property ? Did we climb roofs on private property ? Did we swear at adults and little children trying to enjoy their parks and skate park ? Did we terrorise and intimidate local residents and drop litter, smash glass every night in Pykenham Park and Cocksie’s Park ? NO !! and we did not have as many things to do as the youths of the town do today. Most of us respected the town we lived in, all knew each other and our friends parents, and respected adults, but enjoyed ourselves. Sadly, through the last few weeks of the school summer holidays, myself and other members of Hadleigh SNT have spent the majority of our time dealing with youths in the town, and the aftermath of their drinking and drug fuelled gatherings in the parks. Residents of the town are fed up with what is happening, we are contacted on a daily basis, images and comments have been plastered all over social media (sometimes naming and shaming). Whilst this is short term, Suffolk Police need to be made aware in order to try to deal with and move forward with a solution to the problems we are facing on a daily basis. Do you have any ideas ? There are many sports groups, leisure centre, skate park, gym, astro-turf pitch, The Porch Project, all of which offer ideas and solutions, but it would seem that this is not enough. At the moment, we have only had to knock on doors of parents whose children we have been dealing with, informing them that their child has been trespassing on private property, or drunk in the park, we do not want to be telling parents that their child has been seriously injured whilst showing off to their mates. So, PLEASE educate your children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters – trespassing, climbing, drinking, drug taking is anti-social, dangerous and worse case scenario Fatal ! We will continue to patrol around the town, parks, skate park engaging with these youths. We do not want to just be there when there is trouble, often talking to them, breaks down barriers. We will have a laugh and a conversation with them but then will deal with them when it is necessary to take alcohol off them and suggest they go home or clear up the litter they have just dropped. Often 13, 14, 15 year olds do not appreciate the repercussions of their actions now, and that these actions could have a massive impact on their future when they reach their 20’s, especially when they want to apply for jobs or visit foreign countries. A criminal record will be present for a long time. Do not let it spoil their lives. Please speak to your children. Please contact the team at Hadleigh Police Station if you want to report any anti-social behaviour or indeed would like to help us with suggestions or maybe talk to your children about the topic of anti-social behaviour. Until next time: PCSO 3173 Julia Bignell, Hadleigh SNT, Hadleigh Police Station. Email: hadleigh.snt@suffolk.pnn.police.uk

Recipe for Success by Sarah Thompson

& GET ON FREE E !

This dish was inspired by the antics and allotment of John Day, who furnished me with some of the biggest onions I have ever seen. I duly passed them onto my husband Simon, who came up with this recipe. This is comfort food at its very best, and is in memory of John’s son. Lee, whose wonderful smile and zest for life will be sadly missed. Make this dish and share it with family and friends. Boulangère potatoes 1.5 kg Charlotte potatoes (or other waxy potatoes) thinly sliced 2-3 large onions, finely sliced, A handful of fresh sage, finely sliced Salt and pepper to season, 400ml vegetable stock, Grated cheese (optional), Parmesan cheese to top, About 50g butter in small pats 1. Heat the oven to 180C/Gas mark 4 2. In a large baking dish place a layer of the sliced potatoes, then a layer of the onion and season. 3. Place the sliced sage randomly over the top. 4. If you want to make the dish more substantial cover with grated cheese. 5. Repeat the above until the dish is full. 6. Place a layer of potato slices on the top. 7. Pour the stock over the whole dish and then place the butter evenly on the top. 8. Grate parmesan cheese (or hard Italian cheese alternative for vegetarians) over the top to taste. 9. Place into the oven for about an hour until the top is crisp. 10. Serve either by itself, with bread or anything else you wish!

VETERINARY PRACTICE Providing Pet Care 24/7 For Over 100 Years

Are you in pain? (again and again?) September's thoughts by Hadleigh Osteopaths The summer holidays are over and we are returning to work or school. As we return to the same routine the old aches and pains return. Over the years the types of injuries and conditions that we see have not changes all that much, but the causes of these aches and pains has evolved considerably. When the practice first opened in Hadleigh in the early 1990s, we were treating quite a lot of agricultural workers who undertook heavy lifting and manual tasks, and quite a lot of factory workers . These people did lots of repetitive actions in the course of a day, and presented with strain patterns to their backs, shoulders and necks as a result of this. Times have changed and whilst we see patients with similar aches and pains from overuse or repetitive actions, it's fair to say that these are less likely to be caused by repetitive manual tasks, but now include postural overloads from sitting in the same position at a desk, or new actions and activities such as sitting with a laptop or tablet and playing games or browsing the internet. Years ago a mouse was a creature your cat came in with, not an essential piece of office equipment that gave you a repetitive strain injury in your shoulder or forearm. We see people holding a mobile phone and texting or talking everywhere we go now. Many people are constantly balancing their phone between a shoulder and an ear or staring down at their device. The human head can weigh 5kg and once the head is bent forward to look down at a device, often at up to a 60° angle, the neck muscles have to support five-times this weight. Long-term consequences of this activity may include neck discomfort, neck pain, stiffness, and headaches, and “text neck” predominantly affects the younger, otherwise healthy generation. Whatever the cause of your discomfort, the correct help and advice can stop these problems becoming recurrent. To find out more please contact the practice on: 01473 828585 / 07770 746224 or email us: osteopathyinsuffolk@gmail.com or visit our website: www.hadleighosteopaths.co.uk

For over two hundred years, one branch of the Squirrell family lived and worked in Bildeston. Starting out as watchmakers and passing through other occupations such as liquor merchants, auctioneers, publicans, millers and maltsters to corn merchants, they have lived at various properties throughout the village and employed many local people. Their last place of business is remembered in the naming of the site as Squirrell’s Mill Road when developed for housing. In the 1520s, when Richard Stansby was appointed bailiff of Bildeston manor, he saw the position as an opportunity to ‘feather his nest’. He was already the second wealthiest tax payer here and living in a large house in Chapel Street. However, as the earl of Essex, the manorial lord, lived elsewhere, Richard began taking into his own hands real estate belonging to the manor as well as that belonging to other villagers. Eventually, the archbishop of Canterbury Thomas Cranmer and Thomas Cromwell (he of Wolf Hall) became involved. Thanks to Bildeston History Quarterly readers Ray Bridger of Monks Eleigh, Oswald Simpson of Elmsett and Michael Smith of Nedging, picture features show community events of the first half of the 20th century involving bicycles and babies. Available at Bank House Stores and Brook Farm Studio in Bildeston, Avis the Newsagent and Idler Bookshop in Hadleigh High Street and at Hollow Trees Farm Shop in Semer, price £3.

Hadleigh and District Probus Club Hadleigh and District Probus’s Summer Outing was a trip down the River Stour from Sudbury to lunch at the Swan at Henny, sailing on the two electric boats owned by the River Stour Trust. The party was limited to 20 people, the maximum allowed on the two boats. At mid-day on Tuesday 12th July we departed from the Gasworks Cut by the Quay Theatre sailing on to the Stour in overcast but dry weather. We proceeded at a maximum of 4mph, the fastest speed allowed on the Stour, while the crew pointed out the various features as we sailed by, along with stories about the various owners of the land either side of the river. Soon we were at the lock at Great Cornard where we slowly descended to the height of the river below the lock. Along the way we passed canoeists, swans and various ducks and an hour after we departed we arrived at Henny where the Swan laid on an excellent meal. Two hours later we set out on the return journey to Sudbury, it now raining heavily. Fortunately we were under cover on the boats and an hour later we were back at Sudbury, having had a very enjoyable day. Our thanks to the crew of the River Stour Trust for an excellent day. On the first Wednesday in August we had the Hadleigh and District Probus Ladies Lunch at the Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa in the Garden Room overlooking their golf courses. We were unable to sit outside on the veranda before the meal as in previous years as the weather was overcast and, by the time we came to leave, it was pouring with rain, a bit reminiscent of the boat trip. But this did not stop us having an excellent lunch served with professional expertise by the Hotel staff. Apart from these special meetings to which ladies and friends are invited, Hadleigh and District Probus mens’ club meets for lunch on the third Wednesday of each month in the rear bar of ‘The George’ in Hadleigh. If you are a retired professional or businessman, why not come along and join us? Full details are available from our secretary, Chris Drake, at chrisdrake29@talktalk.net or telephone 01473 808147.

The Children’s Society The Children’s Society has supported vulnerable children and families since its inception in 1881. It may be hard to credit but, in fact, there are a huge number of children who live in poverty on our island and for whom the society works to bring about change in their lives in the unstinting belief that every child is precious. If you would like to contribute regularly to the work of the Children’s Society, home collection boxes can be delivered to you or picked up from St Mary’s Church. The boxes are taken in annually by volunteer collectors and the contents forwarded to the Society. You could use it to put in odd change, or one suggestion is sparing just the cost of a pint of milk (half a litre!) once a week. Donations can be gift aided, which increases the sum for the Society by 25% at no cost to you. Please ask me for a gift aid form – the details are never passed on to any other agency and you can ask to have no literature sent to you in the year. SKy Watch

September sky Sun 5th Rise 06.14, Set 19.33; 14th Rise 06.28, Set 19.12; 30th Rise 06.55, Set 18.35. Moon Full = 6th, New = 20th Mercury Is in the dawn sky but rather low down. The Planet can be seen close to Mars on the 16th and 17th of September. Venus Is blazing away still in the morning sky at magnitude -3.9. It enters the constellation of Leo by the end of the month. Mars Is magnitude 1.8 and can be seen in the morning sky 2 hours before sunrise. The Moon is close by on the 18th. Jupiter Is magnitude -1.7 as it descends into the western sky at dusk. A crescent Moon is close by on the 18th. Saturn Is magnitude 0.5 in the evening sky. The Moon is close by on the 27th. September Sky I thought that this month we'd venture outside with our binoculars and locate a star cluster that is getting on a bit in years and is in fact, one of the oldest star systems you can see without large fancy telescopes. It is designated as M15, the M indicates it was first documented by the French astronomer Charles Messier in his catalogue of objects that resembled Comets. Jean-Dominique Maraldi is the first credited to have seen it way back in 1746. The object shines at magnitude 6.2 meaning even low-powered binoculars will pick it up and it is known as a globular cluster, that is to say, a large group of stars held together by gravity in a spherical shape orbiting around a galactic core. It lies at a distance of 32,600 light years and is dated to be 12.0 billion years old. It's physical width is some 175 light years across. The stars combined have a total luminosity of 360,000 times that of our Sun. The cluster homes 100,000 stars and contains over 100 variable stars and even 8 pulsars and a double newton star system. Another thing you'll notice from the image is the vast amount of red stars. This is a clue as to the age. As stars age they change colour. Our very own Sun will become a red giant star in around 5 billion years (this will spell the end of Planet Earth I must add as we are consumed within the outer layers of the Sun's atmosphere). So get out there on the next clear evening and look at a piece of real space antiquity. Until next month clear skies. Sudbury to the Sea (S2C) Sudbury to the Sea, most commonly referred to as S2C, is a very popular event that takes place this year on Saturday 9 & Sunday 10 September 2017. The event is limited to 300 craft and we are now taking bookings (£20 entry fee per craft). Participants navigate the 24½ miles (37km) of the River Stour, from Sudbury to the Cattawade Barrier, enjoying its many delights and seeing parts of the local countryside that are inaccessible by foot or road. All craft navigating the river and taking part in S2C must be registered to do so and all participants will be expected to abide by the rules of S2C. Experienced and novice paddlers travel from all over the UK (and sometimes further afar!) to take part. The River Stour Trust provides help and advice along the route, a safety boat following all craft, and checkpoints at various points along the navigation. Participants must provide their own craft, personal safety equipment, transport at either end of the event, accommodation for the Saturday night (a camp-site at the midway stage), and food and drink. However, there will be some food and drink available at various places along the route. Proceeds of the event go to the River Stour Trust, a registered charity (No. 257806), seeking to restore and conserve the River Stour Navigation for the benefit of all. News from St. Mary’s Primary We have had a very busy and enjoyable last few weeks of the summer term at St. Mary’s! Healthy eating Year 3 and 4 have been learning all about keeping healthy this term. Cheryl from One Life Suffolk has been visiting us every week this term to teach us about different things such as the amount of sugar in our food and drinks and how much food we should be eating. The children have been so inspired by this topic that they wanted to organise stalls in their classrooms to teach other children what they learnt. We were also visited by some of our parents during the day who took part in our activities, learning all about a balanced diet and the Eat Well Guide. Kentwell Hall Year 5 and 6 visited Kentwell Hall this term as part of their topic on Tudors. They had a wonderful day, dressing up and playing the games that Tudor children would have played. They learnt about the different types of dyes for materials and how the different types of weapons were made. KS2 performance Towards the end of term, all the children in KS2 worked hard in rehearsing and performing their play. As part of our Roald Dahl celebrations this year, we decided to perform ‘Cinderella.’ ‘You might think you know this story, you don’t! The real one’s much more gory!’ The children worked hard to choreograph their dance routines and learn their lines. It was a real team effort and the feedback from parents and visitors was lovely. Sonnie and Kian, our fairy godmothers, were a hit in their rugby socks and pink tutus! Thank you to everyone involved in making this performance happen, it was a wonderful experience for all involved. Kagera Day This term we felt honoured and privileged to host Kagera days for everyone to enjoy. We were visited by people who have worked in Kagera, Africa and they held workshops over 2 days for the children to find out what life is like there. We learnt how to speak Swahili by reading books and singing songs. There was a mosaic workshop where we made a collaborative piece of artwork using traditional colours. We also made our own fruit salads using fruit that is native to Kagera. Thank you to everyone who helped in making these workshops an unforgettable experience. Helicopter visit There has been a great deal of excitement in school recently as we were visited by the Army Air Corps from Wattisham. They arrived in their Apache helicopter and landed on the school playing field! We asked lots of questions throughout the morning about what it is like to be a pilot and how the helicopter flies. Thank you to everyone at Wattisham Air Field for organising this special experience. During the last few days of the summer term year 6 have been very busy. They attended a sports day in Woodbridge which was attended by all the schools in the academy trust. Our children were given lots of positive comments about their behaviour and good sportsmanship, well done! The results from the KS2 SATs were published recently and all the hard work this year has really paid off. We are so proud of the remarkable achievements made by all our year 6 children, a great set of results, well done! In recognition of all their hard work, they were treated to a leavers ‘pizza picnic’ during the last week of term! Thank you to everyone who is part of our school community and has helped in creating another successful year at St. Mary’s.

Hadleigh & District Garden Club Monday August 14th 2017 Well, what an evening we had! Our last meeting was the Garden Club's contribution to the Hadleigh Festival of Gardening and Art being held this year, with three personalities from BBC Suffolk making up a panel for our own version of Gardeners' Question Time. Our well qualified experts, from left to right in the photo, were Matthew Tanton- Brown, Karen Kenny and Graeme Proctor and they were certainly presented with some challenging questions - as ever the best questions seemingly the simplest ones. The threesome worked well together- they had clearly done it before - and answers were both informative and humourous. They certainly weren't fazed when asked at the very start to identify an ailing leaf which looked like something to be smoked ( it wasn't!) and we were all impressed by tips on tree growing, pest control and Karen's flag waving for mulching. We all went home entertained and much better informed. And next up on Monday September 11th At our next meeting we welcome back Rod Tibbs, who earlier this year proved to be an entertaining speaker on patio planting. This time he turns his attention to growing vegetables and making compost, certainly both are subjects most gardeners will have grappled with but possibly with varying degrees of success. We look forward to learning more and picking up some tips, do come and join us if you can the meeting will be held at Hadleigh Town Hall (entrance opposite The Ram) and starts at 7.30pm. The cost is £3 for non members and £1 for members, to include refreshments. The competition for September is the longest runner bean. We hope to see you there. Andy Leeder, Chairman

Down to Earth ...with Dave With the very changeable weather we have been having in August you have to feel a bit sorry for the farmers trying to get in their harvest and all the school children away on their holidays. But for us growers the weather has been ideal, with enough rain and warm sun to keep everything growing nicely. The downside is that the weather is also perfect for the weeds. Just turn your back for a day or two and they are everywhere. The hoe is in constant use, as the soil is moist the weeds are easily removed. All the potato tops have been cut off and disposed of at the tip, this should stop the spread of any blight. I just don't like the idea of putting them on the compost. The potatoes are being dug up as soon as possible but will be okay for a couple of weeks and then stored in paper sacks back at home. All the onions have been lifted, dried off and also stored at home. We seem to have had a bumper sized crop this year, possibly due to the weather. The gladioli have again been brilliant, with the house full of colour, not only from them, but also from the loads of wonderful flowers given to my wife to wish her a speedy recovery from her recent knee replacement surgery. This is a very painful operation and it will take time before she is fully out and about. I did manage a little time off from my carer's duties to visit the Burstall annual show at the beginning of August. This is a truly old fashioned show with tents full of local crafts and produce. Despite some heavy rain it went very well and I could be tempted to enter some of the classes next year. I did check up and you don't have to live in Burstall to enter the competitions. At the recent very successful 'Gardeners' Question Time' the subject of used mushroom compost as a mulch was raised. I have long been a fan of this medium, and over the years have used bags and bags of it at very low cost, both on the garden and allotment. I was pleased that all three experts on the panel agreed with me. The one cautionary note given was that as it is a bit acidic it should not be allowed to come into contact with the base of any trees as it could cause some burning. Another advantage is that the compost has mycorrhizal fungi in it and this helps build up a strong root structure. Keep on dead heading, try to keep the weeds under control with a sharp hoe and, if you can, sit back and enjoy the sunshine. A couple of points of interest to end with - the rather extravagant plan to put a bridge of plants across the river Thames has finally been abandoned. This after a staggering cost of thirty million pounds. Finally the creator of Fullers Mill Garden at West Stow, Bernard Tickner has been awarded an M.B.E. for services to horticulture and wildlife in Suffolk. Our garden group met this lovely old gentleman when we visited his wonderful garden last year and I wrote about him in the October news. That's all for now, Dave

Hadleigh Healing Society How often have you walked in the countryside and passed trees and not given them a second thought. We are all guilty of not taking the time to really look at what is around us. Our countryside is beautiful and has inspired artists, writers and poets over the generations, but do we really treasure it as we should. There are so many demands on land for housing and the need to grow food that the green spaces are diminishing. For some people this is where they find their peace away from the stresses and strains of modern life. If you feel the need to find that bit of peace, the need to talk with someone who will listen and not judge you. Come to The Bungalow where you will be made welcome by one of our registered, qualified healers , all in the strictest confidence. Please telephone: 01473 823282 (answer machine) or log onto www.hadleighhealingsociety.org We are having a Clairvoyant Day on the 16th September 10am – 4pm. The Glyn Morgan studio sale Residents of Hadleigh and its environs will have the rare opportunity to purchase a piece of the town’s rich artistic heritage when the Glyn Morgan estate is sold at Reeman Dansie Auctioneers on September 27th. Glyn was one of scores of artists who came to Hadleigh to study at The East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing (often known as Benton End School), an independent Art School established by Cedric Morris and Arthur Lett-Haines at Benton End Farmhouse. In 1943 Cedric Morris visited Morgan’s home town of Pontypridd Glyn Morgan oil on canvas to judge an art competition and 17 'Egret et Les Viviers' year old Glyn’s potential was Estimate £300 - £500 spotted. Glyn was prompted to attend Benton End, first visiting in 1943, just two years after the School became established in Hadleigh, following earlier incarnations at Higham and Dedham. After 1943 Glyn attended the Art School as often as time would allow, particularly during its hey-day in the 1940s and 50s. He duly became one of Benton End’s most celebrated alumni, alongside such artistic greats as Lucien Freud, Maggi Hambling and John Skeaping. Although much of his career as artist and teacher was spent in Buckinghamshire, Glyn remained an advocate for the legacy of the Benton End School. In 1985 he organised a retrospective exhibition of Benton End works, and in the mid 1990s Glyn and his wife Jean retired to Hadleigh. Retirement for Glyn didn’t curtail his painting; the September auction includes works spanning a career of over 70 years of artistic endeavour. The Glyn Morgan collection is offered as it was discovered in his artist’s studio, featuring over 250 paintings by the artist, together with unframed and sketchbook material and also including art work by Cedric Morris, John Nash, Lucy Harwood and others in the artist’s circle. Glyn’s easel will be sold; previously owned by Cedric Morris, this was discovered in his garden studio and on it was a partially completed oil painting by Cedric Morris depicting Irises. This rare work not only reflects Cedric Morris’s dual stellar career as plantsman and artist, but ably demonstrates Morris’s unusual self-taught painting technique, often described as ‘knitting’, starting in one corner of the canvas and continuing until the painting is complete - observers claim he never returned to correct or embellish a part of the painting. Benton End students were encouraged to work free from influences and develop their own style, despite this, an in-house style, derivative of Cedric Morris, predominated and Glyn Morgan’s early work conforms to this also, in time however, Glyn developed a highly original hand. Country Threads Workshop Keeping a charity shop stocked with hand crafted gifts is quite a commitment but one the Country Threads craft group takes very seriously. In addition to their light-hearted Wednesday get togethers in the URC room, organisers Mavis Gordon and Lin Slaughter, also arrange several Saturday workshops throughout the year. These craft sessions are dedicated to making eyecatching items for the Day Centre shop at the St Elizabeth Hospice which is part of their Made with Love Project. The most recent workshop yielded a collection of unusual gifts which were so attractive it will be hard for anyone visiting the Hospice Shop to resist. Mavis and Lin will personally deliver the goodies as this gives them an opportunity to meet some of the Project’s volunteers and find out for future workshops which items are in demand. The workshops are sociable gatherings with a purpose so if you would like to come to the next one or any of the equally friendly mid-week sessions at the URC room please contact Mavis for further details. 01473 824 398 mavis.gordon@mypostoffice.co.uk. Fed up with hard water and lime scale? Fitting a water softener will save you money and time East Anglia has some of the hardest water in Great Britain. The scale build up on shower screens and taps, that ring of scum in the basin, and limescale in kettles are some of the visible consequences of hard water. We have to resort to using large amounts of washing powder, conditioner, extra salts in the dish washer and expensive bathroom cleaning products to overcome the dreaded scale. In my professional capacity I’ve replaced countless appliances that should have had a longer service life. Scale blocks water ways in boilers and hot water pipes. Heating elements in hot water cylinders and electric showers get encrusted and fail. All these problems can be solved by fitting an ion exchange water softener. Laundered clothes will feel softer, after showering your skin will feel smoother, you’ll use far less detergents and the adverse effects on your plumbing system will start to reverse. If you would like to know more, give me a call. I’m happy to show you a simple 15 minute demonstration and provide an installation survey. A typical installation can be done in one day. Ring Nick Marno at Brett Valley Installations on 01206 337316 or 07896 054439 or email nickmarno@tiscali.co.uk

Passchendaele and Beyond In this article we remember: Leslie Harold Cocksedge - 20 September 1917 The Third Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele), continued through September 1917 with two major offensives; the Battle of Menin Road and the Battle of Polygon Wood. Hadleigh men were involved but none are known to have fallen. Some were serving with the 2nd Suffolks who played a prominent role in Polygon Wood and went on in the words of their regimental history to have ‘the honour of capturing the village of Zonnebeke’. Zonnebeke was just 2 miles away from the village of Passchendaele. From early in 1916 recruiting was no longer done on regional lines and new recruits were sent to join battalions that needed manpower. Hadleigh men enlisting at the end of 1915 under the Lord Derby Scheme could find themselves serving with any British battalion. One such man was Leslie Harold Cocksedge. Leslie was born in 1897 at 13 Bridge Street, Hadleigh into a milling family. His father Edmund and his father’s brothers worked the windmill that once stood at the top of George Street and the water and steam mill on Bridge Street. Although Leslie enlisted into the reserve of the Bedfordshire regiment, by January 1916 he was sent to join the Northumberland Fusiliers. He served with the 11th and 21st battalions, we are not sure exactly when he joined them or when he first went to France but we know he was wounded at some point because he was convalescing in Hadleigh in January 1917. He

was back in France in July 1917 and at that time serving with the 20th battalion. The 20th Northumberland Fusiliers were also known informally as the 1st Tyneside Scottish, they were raised in 1914 in Newcastle as a Pals battalion from Scots who had moved south. They went to France in January 1916 and their first major engagement was on the infamous first day of the Battle of the Somme where they suffered extremely heavy loses. It is likely that Leslie joined them when they were being regenerated. By September 1917 the 20th Northumberland Fusiliers were in trenches to the west of Hargicourt, about 10 miles east of Péronne. They were facing the Hindenburg line where the Germans had withdrawn in March 1917. There were some scuffles, but it was relatively quiet with each side watching the other and sending out small reconnaissance parties at night. The war diary for the 20 September reports that their trenches were “lightly shelled at intervals during the day” and at 3.30pm “several mortar bombs fell” and at some stage that day Leslie Cocksedge was killed. He has a known grave in the Hargicourt British Cemetery and is remembered on the Hadleigh War Memorial. In August of 2017 the Hadleigh Great War Centenary Project took a group of youngsters from the St Mary’s Porch Project to Belgium and France in order to tour the Great War battlefields. During the trip the group followed in the footsteps of Hadleigh men who fell and heard stories of how the war effected the town. There were several highlights, but one that stands out was when 13 year old Bobby Evans found his great great great uncle's name, Private Charles Mitchell on the Menin Gate. Charles is one of over 53,000 men who went missing in the Ypres Salient. He went missing in May 1915 and we told his story in the May 2015 Hadleigh Community News. If you want more information about Charles or any of the Hadleigh men who died during the war; the recent battlefield tour or the Hadleigh Great War Centenary Project in general, then please visit the project website. GREAT WAR NEWS SEPTEMBER 1917 (as reported in the Suffolk and Essex Free Press of the day)

Wed 5 Sept - All the letters from the Western Front tell of continuous heavy rain and the impediments (mud and water) which the troops have to contend against. Those from Mesopotamia, Palestine and Salonika, testify to the heat and plague of flies. Wed 5 Sept - Corporal Fred Cole, London Regiment writes from the Western Front. The depth of the mud is great, and the whole area is covered with water. The floods are increasing, and every depression where water can collect has become a pond. Our regiment was in the attacking force and we penetrated Polygon Woods which, though black and charred by our artillery, was studded by enemy machine guns. Our airmen are wonderful they are not only the eyes of the Army, but do so much execution on their own account. They helped considerably in our latest advance, not only by conquering enemy machines but also in attacking infantry and gun emplacements. We long for fine weather to enable us to continue our onward movement. Wed 26 Sept - The following letter was received from one of our officers who has risen through the ranks at the Western Front; “When your letter came I was in an old German dug-out. It was made of concrete and rails; the disadvantage is that door faces the wrong way. I have been under shell fire for three days and four nights and go out for a rest tonight; then come in again in a week’s time. The original country ceases to exist; roads and railways are blotted out, and we recognise churches by a white heap, as they were built of white stone. I found a Salvationist Bible and a letter near to what was once a man. Water is very hard to get; we have stolen it up to now, and it is muddy and smells, but it is wet. The chaplains walk around the battlefields burying chaps who have been missed. I had the unpleasant experience of being shelled on both sides – one of our guns was firing short. I walk about to visit the boys by day and night and am unafraid. I feel as if someone was walking with me. So Cheerio

Dear Sir, I would like to say a very big thank you to my wonderful family for my 90th Birthday Party, they did me proud. I was overwhelmed by it all, they have looked after me for the last 28 years and are still doing it. It was lovely to see so many friends, I hope they enjoyed it as much as I did. Thanks for all the lovely cards and presents, I shall cherish them. Thanks to Angel Delights for the wonderful food. Donations to Alison Fracella Research Trust made ÂŁ65.00. Agnes Death

Dear Sir, I understand that Purcell, Architects in Colchester are, or will be, marketing the Corks Lane property which will become vacant at the end of September 2017. I, and I know many others, feel very strongly that Hadleigh needs a hotel Premier Inn, Travelodge, English Inns, and even closer to home, Greene King. The site is perfect - it has a car park, it overlooks the river, it has an inner courtyard, its two storeys would be adequate. It would be ideal for attracting not only visitors to the town, but also for accommodating business guests from some of the large industrial premises in Lady Lane Industrial Estate - Celotex Saint Gobain, Faithfull Floor Coverings, Jim Lawrence, H. Erben, probably the largest but this is by no means a restrictive list. It would also need to have full restaurant and business/conference facilities. Hadleigh is one of four wool towns in the area who are referred to in the Wool Towns Business Plan. There are 13 hotels - only one small in Hadleigh. The number of people who stay overnight in Babergh declined by 6.97% in 2015, one of the aims and objectives is to increase the number of people who do stay in Babergh - at the moment there are insufficient facilities in Hadleigh! At the next Hadleigh Steering Group meeting on the 4th September, there will be representatives from Babergh DC, and the disposal of the Corks Lane property will be high on the agenda. I believe the Hadleigh Chamber of Commerce also support the need for a hotel in Hadleigh. With the growing demand for UK based holidays, and favourable sterling rates for foreign visitors, a new hotel should be a high priority Mrs Glenn Abbassi

Dear Sir, On a recent bus journey into Ipswich I picked up a revised bus timetable for the 91 route issued by Beestons, which, by the way, was not highlighted in any way or advertised as new times on the bus. No wonder; I am amazed that from 4th September the bus service from Hadleigh to and from Ipswich will be every one and a half hours instead of hourly! Why do surrounding towns, e.g. Needham Market, Woodbridge and Felixstowe have half hourly services from Ipswich but Hadleigh/Sudbury have such a poor service? Furthermore, I am dismayed that the scheduled 9.30 am bus from Magdalen Road to Ipswich will in future start at the High School at 9.20am and leave Magdalen Road at 9.25am which means that pensioners cannot use their bus passes in Hadleigh till 10.20am! Come on Beestons, please have a rethink - for many pensioners this will be an extra expense, especially if their journey is to the hospital. Eunice Ford

Dear Sir, May I take advantage of this column to send a heartfelt ‘thank you’ to the person who handed in my purse when I foolishly left it in a bag hanging on my empty trolley at Morrisons on Wednesday August 3rd. My mind a million miles away I stowed the trolley away and went home – realising too late my error. The purse contained all my cards as well as money so I was very anxious as I hurtled back. Some good, thoughtful person found it and handed it in to my immense relief and I am extremely grateful to them. Faith in human nature restored! Karen Harman

Dear Sir, I refer to the latest agenda for the Hadleigh Town Council meeting, and I wanted to bring to your attention some issues that have arisen within the council of late, which relate to items 15 and 16 on the agenda. Firstly, there has been contention and division within the council relating to the spends of public money, namely whether that money should be spent on increasing the cemetery provision, or whether there should be improvements made to the Layham Road sports facilities. The inclusion of agenda item 15 leads me to believe that despite this causing much division within the council, the decision has been made to press ahead with increasing the cemetery provision. This is going to be hugely costly and will tie up large sums of money in future years also, meaning that yet again, young people, and in fact all living people, within the town will be disadvantaged. Hadleigh is a growing Town, with more and more houses being built and even more (450!) being planned for in the next couple of years, so improved recreation facilities are badly needed already, and with the addition of new houses, the town cannot afford for this money to be tied up for years in the cemetery. The second issue I wanted to raise relates to item 16 on the agenda. The Town councillors had set up a neighbourhood plan group to engage with people within different areas of the town in order that people who actually live within the different areas of the town could have input into future developments and the character of these. This group has suddenly been dissolved, and I have been unable to ascertain under which authority despite asking different councillors because they too were shocked by this dissolution, and have also been trying to find out what lawful authority has been used to action this. To date, the only answer I have is that the town clerk dissolved the group, however it appears that this has also caused major unrest amongst the councillors and a real split within the town council. I had put myself forward to be one of the representatives for the area in which I live, and when I chased a reply, was told that the group was dissolved and they would be discussing it at a future council meeting. I am concerned that we have elected representatives who are unable to carry out their role, which is to represent the best interests of the townspeople, because undemocratic decisions are being made, with no lawful backing, and these are to the detriment of the residents of Hadleigh. Further, I am concerned about the way public money is being spent that does not appear to be in the best interests of the townspeople. It is apparent that a minority of the councillors are acting professionally and in the best interests of the town, however a large majority act unprofessionally, object to being questioned or challenged, and the decisions they make are based on personality rather than the best interests of the town. I believe that it is in the town's best interests for Babergh to intervene as at the moment the vast majority of our councillors are acting unprofessionally and not in the best interests of the town. Further, having spoken to other townspeople who observed at the meeting which took place on 17/08/2017, they were appalled at the treatment of 2 of the councillors, Cllr Shearly-Sanders and Cllr Wilson, who were questioning decisions made so that the decisions were made in the best interests of the town, only to be harassed and treated extremely unprofessionally by other councillors. A comment was even made that the public in attendance did not understand why they remained on the council as the treatment they received was so disgusting. Emma Wilson-Downes

the work of the group with immediate effect. Following advice sought it is apparent that the Working Group needs to consist of an equal number of Councillors and outside representatives i.e. residents, business owners, charitable organisations etc in order for it to be transparent. At the Town Council meeting in August the Council will be supplied with a new Constitution and Terms of Reference for the group. It will then be necessary for any Councillor wishing to serve on the Group to be proposed and seconded accordingly in writing to me by Friday 8th September. At the Town Council Meeting in September the nominations will be put to Council and voted on. Following this the Neighbourhood Plan Working Group will be re-constituted. STANDING ORDER NO. 40 Councillor Cook asked the Clerk to investigate the new membership scheme put forward by the Association of Town and City Management to support market and small towns. Further that Sean Garnham of the Chamber of Commerce be informed of the scheme and our intents with a view to joining. Councillor Cook left the room for the following item. ACCOUNTS FOR PAYMENT It was RESOLVED that accounts amounting to £31,984.16 including HMRC, Utilities, SCC Pension Fund and staff salaries be approved for payment. THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT BOUNDARY COMMISSION FOR ENGLAND – ELECTORAL REVIEW OF BABERGH: WARDING ARRANGEMENTS It was agreed that a small working group consisting of Councillors: Free, Angland, Sheldrick and Whiting would meet to discuss the town boundary and put together a response to the consultation by the closing date of the 14th August 2017. REPRESENTATIVES Councillor Shearly-Sanders updated members on the Babergh Association of Parish and Town Councils and had provided copies to Councillors of the proposed constitution. It was agreed that this would be an item on the next Town Council agenda in order that a vote can be made. Councillor Angland reported on her attendance at a recent Parish Liaison Meeting where Tom Barker, Assistant Director of Planning, gave a presentation. Babergh District Council does not have a five year bank of building land but this was nothing to worry about. It was reported that although there was a national shortage of Planning Officers Babergh had 10 fully qualified officers with only one vacancy. There is evident need for three bedroom houses throughout the district and this should be considered under the Neighbourhood Plan. Councillor Haylock advised that the Wool Town Association would be launched at Kentwell Hall in September and the business plan is now complete and would be circulated shortly. The resident provided a copy of a letter of objection that had been sent to Babergh District Council. The Clerk had discussed the matter with the resident informing him that any objections would need to be copied to the Town Council for the Committee to take into consideration when making a decision. Babergh District Council had also now approved the application. The Committee decided it would be a

TOWN AND COUNTRY PLANNING The Committee noted the Schedule of Decisions of the Local Planning Authority. NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN The Chair updated the Committee on the work of the Neighbourhood Plan group including the attendance at the Hadleigh Show which had proved successful and she thanked those Councillors that had helped before and during the event. GREENWAYS, 7 BRIDGE STREET The Committee noted the response received from Philip Isbell of Babergh District Council relating to this planning application. They felt that, once again, the Town Councils valid planning concerns were being ignored and also that the tone of the letter sent to the Clerk was condescending. ANY OTHER RELEVANT BUSINESS Councillor Matthews asked whether any updates had been received regarding the renaming of Friars Hall Nursing Home to Hadleigh Hall Nursing Home. Both the Chair and the Clerk had emailed the Please write to Mrs. Carol A. Bailey BA(Hons) Town Clerk, Hadleigh Town Council, The Guildhall Hadleigh IP7 5DN if you are part of a voluntary organisation or community group wishing to be considered for a grant including the following information: • The specific amount of the grant • What the funding is for • Breakdown of costs and any funds already raised • How the project will benefit Hadleigh and its residents. This grant aid is not available to fund individuals, commercial or statutory organisations.

company running the home and whilst the Chair had received a reply the Clerks email had been ignored. It appeared that the company did not feel there were any problems with the renaming. Councillor Haylock asked whether any updates had been received regarding the garage at the rear of the Royal Bengal. The enforcement notice had been served and the Clerk reported the matter was now in the hands of Babergh District Council to undertake the enforcement of the notice. Councillor Sheldrick queried the marquee that had been erected at the rear of the Kings Head as this now appeared to be a permanent structure and also there had been new gates installed and there was only one parking space left. It appeared the licensee had not sought Listed Building Consent for these works and the Clerk was requested to contact the local District Councillors for information. The Clerk reported a letter received from Babergh District Council in connection with the changes to consultations on new planning applications. She reported that in future the Town Council would only be provided with paper copies for major applications. Paper copies would be available for all other applications but would need to be requested on a case by case basis by email. Every new planning application received by Babergh District Council would result in an email sent to the office containing a direct web link to the application. It was agreed that for a one month trial the email would be forwarded directly to Councillors so they could peruse the application on line before the meeting. It was further agreed that should the Clerk feel the application warranted a paper copy she would request one prior to the Planning meeting. After one month the Committee would review how the new system was working and resolve how they would wish to continue working in the future. There being no further business the meeting closed at 8:11pm. Mrs Carol A. Bailey BA(Hons) MILCM – Town Clerk

ANOTHER MOTHER’S SON (12A) Based on a true story, this drama is set during World War II on the Nazi-occupied island of Jersey. Letter www.layham.org from Layham Are you new to Layham? If you have just moved to the village and would like to know more about it, please visit our website www.layham.org. However, if you do not have access to a computer and would like a hard copy of the 'Welcome to Layham' booklet, please contact Jane Cryer, Parish Clerk 07920 713940. Parish Council The main matters discussed at the meeting of 26 July 2017 were: • Babergh District Council report Cllr Ward explained that his role as Cabinet Member for the Economy involved helping and promoting local businesses, including visiting them to build relationships and understand how they saw their businesses developing and how Babergh might assist with growth and promotion. It also involved ensuring that Babergh had identified sufficient development sites in the right locations for expected business growth, and liaising with neighbouring authorities and other organisations such as the New Anglia LEP, the South East LEP (covering Essex and Kent) and the Haven Gateway Partnership. The Boundary Commission was currently carrying out a public consultation as part of the Boundary Review; individuals were free to comment if they so wished. With regard to the new pre-planning application service, the fees would depend on the size of the application, and whether basic or specialised advice was required. A written response would be provided to the applicant, but this would not be for public knowledge. • County Council report With reference to the ‘Raising the Bar’ awards, Cllr Jones said several schools had shown a marked improvement. However, the worst performing schools included the free schools; a new Regional Schools Commissioner had been appointed with responsibility for those, and also for academies. In response to a comment from the Chairman about the timing of the recent announcement concerning increased salaries for officers and members, GJ said the timing was because the previous year’s accounts had been signed and were now in the public domain. The increases had been recommended by an independent review panel; GJ noted that members had only received a 1% increase over the last 12 years. • Defibrillators It was agreed to ask an electrician to investigate the possibility of installing a time switch or PIR system in the Upper Layham phonebox. Research continues into the best location for a fourth defibrillator on Brett Green. The report from the working party (JDC, RG and DS) was noted. It was recommended that the best location for the defibrillator was opposite No 29 and near to the garage of No 30 Brett Green. However, confirmation of whether planning permission was required was awaited from BDC before any further action was taken. With regard to funding, some potential sources of funding had been identified. However, it was agreed that the aim was to raise as much funding as possible, but the PC had committed to the provision of a fourth defibrillator and it would therefore make up any shortfall. It was agreed that a check list should be produced to facilitate regular monitoring of all the defibrillators, eg when the battery was installed and how often it needed to be replaced. • Emergency Plan The draft agenda for a meeting of the Emergency Liaison Volunteers’ meeting on 11 September was agreed; the Clerk would send it out by email where possible, together with a covering note. • The Marquis The retrospective application for planning permission for the external lights was considered. The lights could clearly be seen from the Shelley road and from the church and, as there were no street lights in Layham, the impact was obvious. It was noted that the lights were supposed to be turned off overnight, but this was not always the case. It was suggested that PIR lighting might be considered if overnight illumination was necessary for the safety of guests. The location was currently classed as E3, which actually related to small town centres. It was felt that the classification should be E2 (small villages) and Cllr Ward said he would follow this up with Babergh’s planning department. It was agreed that the PC should ask Babergh to give careful consideration to these observations and the observations made by local people direct to BDC. • Water Lane It had been noted that the banks and hedges in Water Lane were overgrown and causing problems for vehicles. It was agreed that MW would take some photographs and report the problem on the SCC website. 52

Commonwealth War Graves The Commonwealth War Graves Commission is working round the country ensuring that wherever members of the armed services died in service and are buried in local burial grounds, a notice draws attention to that fact. Such a notice has recently appeared on the gate of the burial ground in Layham drawing attention to two internments. The first is of Private 1666 Edmund Guy Buckenham who, on the outbreak of the First World War, was recruited from his work as a ‘pork butcher’ in Layham to the 2nd/6th (Cyclist Battalion) Territorial Force of the Suffolk Regiment. He was serving in Lincolnshire in 1915 when he died, aged 20, from cardiac failure brought on by scarlet fever and septicaemia. He was brought home to Layham for burial. Unusually he was not given a War Graves Commission headstone. The second is of Leading Canteen Assistant Arthur Alexander Holmes who served in the Second World War for the NAAFI on board HMS Sheffield in the Malta Convoys in the Mediterranean, in the Atlantic and on Arctic Convoys. When his ship hit a mine off Iceland in March 1942 he was sent home on leave whilst repairs were carried out and sadly contracted tuberculosis and died in Bury St Edmunds hospital in May 1942. News from the Layham Village Hall The new floor in the hall looks fantastic – somehow the hall looks much bigger and brighter. New blinds and chairs are due in soon to complete a summer facelift. From Cars to Pars at Newton’s Golf Week

We are a family of ordinary people who love God and a trust Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour. We extend a really warm welcome for you to join us at any of our services, activities, courses and even nts. More than 500 entrants over six days again made the annual Jonathan Lambert Festival of Golf a big success at Newton Green Golf Club. The week was given a major send off in the form of a veteran vehicle show, specially staged to mark the 110th birthday of the club. It was followed by a wide range of social golf matches aimed at embracing the whole club. It finished on Saturday night with golf week chairman Dora George hosting a presentation party after more than 120 golfers had taken by the Jonathan Lambert silver salver. A record 92 players for a shot gun start at Newton opened the 18-hole events for Tuesday’s Delaney Scramble, and a contingent just short of that number battled round as rain dominated the following days Stableford competition. With a justifiably unfavourable forecast for later in the day, a Foxes and Rabbits event had already been cancelled. The clouds gradually lifted for the rest of the week, and 12-handicapper Tim Richardson, with 42 points, put his name on the Saturday salver after previous near misses in other years. Generally, a blustery wind and a testing course set up, made scoring tough, although Alex Iveson managed to take the junior award with 39, including 26 on the back nine, and Gwyneth Ferreira the women’s best score with 35. In the gross score division, Carl Amos came home first with a creditable 72. Cross Country: 14 Gareth Evans, 12 Doug O’Hara, 11 Steve Knappett. Delaney Scramble: Amanda Rush, Susan Sills, Tim Richardson and Alan Vince. Stableford: George Bullett, Chris Williams, Sue Lockwood and Alex Iveson. Best Whag, Les Gridley; gent, Roger Hermiston; woman, Amanda Rush; junior Alex Iveson. Kiskadee: Sylvia Davis and Jamie Walter. Par Three: 26 Steve Knappett, 23 Peter Scott, 22 Chris Williams. Three clubs and putter: Terry Scurr, Nick Thomson and Adrienne Hughes. Jonathan Lambert Centenary Salver: 42 Tim Richardson; best women 35 Gwyneth Ferreira; best junior 39 Alex Iveson. Best gross score, 72 Carl Amos.

Clarkes Events Two events happened over August including another 70s 80s and 90s night at the football club. Both Both Flumpy and Chubby Rhino did us proud with music from all eras covered. We hope to put another disco on again in October so keep your eyes peeled. The following day was the Magical Picnic on Coxes park. The sun was out the sky was blue and it was magical too. Part of the festival of gardening and art we had Magical music across the park as well as a magic show, face painter, selfie boards, make a wish fountain, treasure hunt and not forgetting HADS mini Bill and Ben show too. The highlight of the event had to be the team game tug of war which was open to all ages some good family fun. Thanks to all who took part in putting the event together especially Jan, Jane and John who worked hard to promote the event and also helped on the day too. The next event is the 3rd Hadleigh Yard Sale on the 24th September. If you would like to take part visit the website to print your own form or pay online, alternatively give me a call on 07787 158085 and I'll be happy to post you a form. Deadline for entry is the 10th Sept so act NOW Trev, www.clarkesevents.uk

Sponsored by Celotex It has been a very good season for the 1st XI, who are safely perched in the top half of Two Counties Division 1 with just a handful of games to go. Our overseas player Brock Price has had a fantastic season, with four centuries and some match-winning performances to his name. It just goes to prove the difference a quality overseas player can make. Brock has helped transform a side that finished in the relegation places last year to one that has been as difficult an opponent as any to face. Players like him are difficult to find, and there is no doubt he has helped some of our younger players like Callum Morrin and Daniel Shanks to find their feet at this level. Josh Davey has continued his excellent form with the bat and Tim Rix weighed in with 6-41 in a recent game. Sadly the 2nd XI are facing relegation from Division 4 after a very difficult season. We have been finding ways to lose games that really we should have won, but that is often the case for teams short on confidence. Finally we added to the win column at home against Maldon thanks to a remarkable spell of bowling from Nadie Abdul. His seven wickets included two brilliant catches in the deep by Fin Anderson, making his debut for the 2nd team. Jamie Colcomb has been the pick of the team’s batsmen with over 300 runs and Steven Tampion and Blake Ambrose have been sharing the heavy bowling workload. The Academy XI are on the other hand pushing for promotion – despite captain Pete Tampion not being overly keen on going up! The youngsters keep doing the business with the ball, and the older heads keep knocking off the runs, and points keep being accumulated. A massive ‘must-win’/‘must-lose’ game is looming against local rivals and table toppers Milden. The Ladies meanwhile have added two more wins to their tally in their first league season, making their highest total so far, 142-2 against Battisford recently. We have quite a few end of season events coming up. Senior presentation night will be on September 9th, followed by a Pop Quiz at the club on Sat September 23rd, with the quizmaster none other than BBC Radio Suffolk’s Stephen ‘Foz’ Foster! Entry is ÂŁ10 per person which includes a curry supper. Book your team by contacting Dave Mann on davidmann25@aol.com / 07954 349379. Finally, tickets are running out for our dinner on October 14th with guest speaker England cricket legend and Strictly Come Dancing star Mark Ramprakash. It promises to be a wonderful evening under a marquee at the Meadow. Individual tickets priced ÂŁ50 are available, or the last few tables of ten can be booked at ÂŁ450 each, from promoter Simon Gladwell: simon.gladwell@copdockmill.co.uk / 07801 928911.

Success for the Men’s team at Hadleigh Tennis Club The HTC men’s team successfully completed their program and won their division in the Summer League. They will therefore move up a division next Summer. We are looking for more men to play league tennis both next Summer and in the forthcoming Winter Floodlight League where the Men’s team won promotion last year. If you are interested in playing competitive league tennis why not come along to a Club Play session (see below) to find out more. In September we have the annual match against Bildeston which was initially held well over one hundred years ago. Hadleigh have been successful in recent years but it has been getting closer. The venue alternates and a good match is anticipated at the Layham Road courts in Hadleigh on 10 September. Prior to that we have the Club’s Ladies doubles on 3 September. The Club Play sessions during British Summer Time are on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6.30pm to 8.00pm and Sundays from 9.30am to 12.00 pm. The Club Play continues in Winter on Tuesday evenings and Sunday mornings. There are 3 floodlit all weather courts located on Layham Road next to the rugby club. We are always pleased to welcome new faces and you can play a few sessions to see how you get on before deciding whether or not to join. If you would like details of membership please email hadleightennis@gmail.com, or text our Secretary, Bryan Walls on 07714 484842.

Hadleigh Table Tennis Club League activities for the Club will begin in week commencing 18th September 2017. Hadleigh will have two teams in the Ipswich and District League, the “A” Team in Division 2 and the “Owls” in Division 3. The “A” side having been relegated last season will be targeting getting back into Division 1 at first attempt. They face a tough opening fixture away to Wherstead Comets one of the teams relegated with them. The “Owls” comfortably mid-table last season in Division 3 will be challenged in their first home game against Wherstead Meteors who were the team just above them in the previous season. Each team will be playing around 20 matches, the home fixtures at Holton St Mary Village Hall. This season we are particularly looking for new players to assist the “Owls” in Division 3. If you are someone interested in playing please contact the Club Secretary, Ken Rodwell, on 01473-823895.

Hadleigh Bowling Club The 2017 outdoor league season in coming to a close with just a few matches to be played. All in all it has been a very successful season. Our BE Mixed Triples team are currently top of their league and are in the semi-final of the league play offs. The BE Men’s Triples team have secured promotion to Division 1 of the Ipswich and District League. The Federation “A” Team need a good win in their last game to also secure promotion. The other teams are having a reasonable season with finishes generally mid table or above. We offer congratulations to Clive Joseph for winning the County Novices Final and Kyle Leeks for winning the County Under 18 Final. Kyle went on to the All England Finals where he battled through 5 rounds to reach the Final whereupon he was beaten on an extra end. It was cruel luck, however he should be justifiably proud of his performance. We wish him well in the All England Under 25 Finals next weekend. Di Miller, Barbara Bourner, David Kemp and Peter Miller won the John Furnish Trophy at East Bergholt on Sunday 13th August so our congratulations go to them also. On the home front our internal competitions are getting to the final stages which will be held at the club on Saturday 9 September. Now that the League commitments are reducing we have our annual John Ward Trophy starting on Friday 18 August with 8 teams of 6 bowlers taking part over a 2 week period. It is always a popular competition and is guaranteed to produce some shock results.

Hadleigh Swimming Club Round Up

It was a busy 2016/17 season for our swimmers with galas, open meets and championships aplenty. We are very proud that athletes from Hadleigh Swimming Club represented us at Development, County and Regional level this season with many personal bests and medals achieved – well done to all those swimmers and thanks to the parents for all the support and ferrying around! Pictured are some of the team who represented our club at the Suffolk ASA Summer League Grand Final, held in July. The annual Summer League takes place over three rounds, held at pools across the county and is a great opportunity for young swimmers to compete against other clubs and support their team – it’s usually quite a noisy affair! All the swimmers who took part gave it their all and lots of fun was had. We also hosted an in-house 25-metre race night to raise funds for the club. This was a great chance for all sections of the club to come together and swim fast and furious races with a delicious buffet afterwards – thanks again to all involved. Looking ahead to the new season we are excited about our trip to the London Aquatics Centre to train in the pool where many of our swimming heroes competed in the Olympics and European Championships, as well as attending open meets, galas, improving our fitness and technique and of course achieving new personal bests. Swimming is excellent for all-round fitness and is accessible to all. Learning or training with Hadleigh Swimming Club is a great way to establish a long-term healthy lifestyle as well as making new friends and offers the opportunity to compete, or not, as you wish. For more information about how to join Hadleigh Swimming Club or to arrange an assessment, please contact mickevansmba@gmail.com or see the poster at Hadleigh Pool and Leisure

SERVICE

Sponsored by Hadleigh Tyre Group www.hadleigh-utd.co.uk Everyone involved with this football club was shocked and saddened by the death of loyal club servant Lee Day. Sympathy goes to the family of a popular stalwart who did a host of vital tasks on match days. Lee, aged 44 had been ill for some time but his death was sudden. A minutes applause took place before the match against Newmarket as a tribute. The game was the first league game of the season and was a big test for our young side so the defeat by three goals to one was no real surprise. Newmarket are one of the favourites for the title. The next first team match was against Wivenhoe at the Millfield. We won by three goals to one. In the F.A Cup Hadleigh gave a great performance to beat Sporting Bengal, an Asian team from London. A good crowd came along to the Millfield to cheer Hadleigh on to this great victory. All three senior teams had some excellent pre-season games with the first team hosting Colchester United Academy. The professionals from Essex scored two late goals to decide the outcome. The Reserves came out on top in a challenge match against our Veterans by three goals to one. The second string drew with Henley Reserves three each. Out Thrulow Nunn youth team drew against Cornard and lost narrowly at Newmarket. The match against Halstead Youths was abandoned when Henry Wilkins unfortunately suffered a broken leg. Prize winners in the monthly draw were M. Watts and Paul Bray. Winner of the Ground Improvement fund was Lynda Ward. Draws were made by Mark Hood at the Wivenhoe match. HADLEIGH UNITED FIXTURES The first team face a busy month with nine matches in September starting on Saturday 2nd at Walsham. A trip to Felixstowe follows on Tuesday 5th before London side Wadham Lodge come to Hadleigh on Saturday 9th. A short trip to Stanway takes place for a hard game on Tuesday 12th while Ipswich Wanderers are at the Millfield on Friday 15th. Little Oakley come to our ground for a cup match on Tuesday 19th before a trip to the seaside to oppose Yarmouth on Saturday 23rd. A home match follows against local rivals Brantham on Tuesday 26th before a hectic month ends at Histon on Saturday 30th. The Reserves will be at home on Saturday 9th when Walsham come to Hadleigh. We then go to Whitton on Saturday 9th and then Ipswich Wanderers second string are visited on Saturday 16th. A long Journey to Witham follows on Saturday 23rd before the curtain comes down at home to Wivenhoe on Saturday 30th. Our Thurlow Nunn youth team go to Needham Market on Thursday 7th and then travel to Whitton on Thursday 14th. A home contest against Framlingham on Wednesday 27th ends the month. Terry Adams

Hilda Rule Rose competition Stoke by Nayland Lady Vets played the Hilda Rule Rose Bowl Medal on Monday. Despite the driving rain the match was well supported. The Rose Bowl was presented by Joce Mallett, a past Lady Vets Captain, to Elaine Davidson with a nett 77, 2nd was Maryan Griffiths with 81, and 3rd was Nora Hutchinson with 83. Our social members joined us for a well deserved lunch, where they shared their memories of times past.
