Sign up for The Gayford Flyer... Cyclists are busy signing up for the Gayford Flyer, Hadleigh’s own sportive on September 18th. Last year’s event attracted over 200 cyclists and Hadleigh Cycling Club is looking to tempt even more. The sportive is named “The Gayford Flyer” in recognition of the town’s world record breaking aviator, Oswald Gayford. The 60 and 32 mile routes will take riders past landmarks including Gayford family home on Angel Street, RAF Wattisham where he served as commander and his final resting place in Naughton. Adam Chamberlin, Chair of the Club said, “We had tremendous feedback from those who took part in last year’s event. Everyone commented that it was well run and it is only £10 to enter.” Last year’s Flyer impressed British Cycling and their representative commented that it “was a super event – well thought through, well executed and very enjoyable to be part of.” Details of the event can be found at www.thegayfordflyer.info. Cyclists can only sign up via www.britishcycling.org.uk and the last day for registering is 11th September. There will live music and refreshments at The George Public House for the riders and their friends and family after the Sportive. The sportive is supported by The Pedal House, The George, Sunny Day Cycleworks, Crockatt Garage and Rattlesden Gliding Club. The Club will also make a donation to local charity, The Brendan Oakes Trust.

Walk 42 miles in one day? He’s either mad or Dick Beechener! Dick Beechener, the current Worshipful Master of Brett Valley Lodge in Hadleigh had wanted to contribute to the Lodge’s fundraising by doing something a little different. So on Saturday 6th August, Dick, together with his daughter Alison, walked 42.2 miles from Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge back to Hadleigh Town Hall where the Lodge hold their meetings. They commenced the walk at 6 am in the morning on one of the hottest days of the year, arriving back in Hadleigh some 14 hours later at 8 pm. Dick and Alison commented shortly after finishing that they were both feeling fine, a little sore and glad to be home! All the brethren of Brett Valley Lodge congratulated them on this very tough and substantial feat which has currently raised a sum in excess of £1600. There is still time to sponsor Dick and Alison if you wish... contact them on - richard.beechener@yahoo.co.uk

Howard at Bower House Farm Hello my loyal followers: my heart sinks when I see the combine harvesters at work. I know that the better part of the Summer months have gone and cold dark evenings are on their way. It was a lovely sunny day when a call came through from the Estate Office at Bower House Farm. The Lord of the Manor that surveys the rolling hills, fields and woodland wondered if I would like to see the combine harvester in operation as the Barley was ready to cut. I was pleased to meet Richard Morton who farms the acres and masterminds the operation of the combine harvester from an enormous air conditioned cabin which was almost as big as the Drawing Room at the Gibbons’ residence. We were at Cox Field which is about 32 acres. The combine harvester is one of the largest in the area with a swathe of 30 foot and Richard skilfully cuts up to 60 acres a day without a stalk to be seen. Richard is assisted by navigation sensors on the outer wings of the combine. 1000 litres of fuel is used a day. It was fortunate that Frank my chauffeur had delivered me to the Estate in a lovely new maroon Range Rover which had been loaned to us by Land Rover. The Lord of the Manor took us on a tour across the farm which took a good part of the afternoon as we navigated country tracks from Kersey to Boxford and back to Polstead. There were enormous grain stores with dryers and massive heaps of rape seed. I happened to mention that Maria spent many an hour when relaxing stroking Frank’s rabbit who is called Flopsy. I was slipped a lovely bale of straw and Flopsy will enjoy stretching out and rolling in it. Frank will also pop some under his strawberries – it does wonders to extend the growing season and to keep the fruit pert. I had a very interesting day at The Imperial War Museum at Duxford. Frank delivered us and we were given special parking very close to the Control Tower and the runway. Cheese scones and coffee, a picnic lunch of home made sausage pie followed by ground rice and jelly. The Household continues to function wherever it moves! I well remember in 1977 when Concorde was flown into Duxford before the runway was shortened by the M11. Meanwhile the office functions with alacrity. No matter who the estate agents recommend to you, come to us for certain independent advice for your property dealings. We have practised in Hadleigh for fourteen years and I have been qualified as a Solicitor for 31 years so do take the benefit of all that experience. Don’t put off doing that Will – make an appointment to come to see me. A Lasting Power of Attorney is an important document to have in hand so that your affairs can be handled even if you should lose mental capacity. Howard Gibbons

It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year! We can hardly believe that it has been a year since the launch of the Christmas Day event designed to cater for those who would otherwise be on their own at this time, but here we are again! Last year, with the generous financial and volunteer support from the good people of Hadleigh and the surrounding areas, we served traditional Christmas lunch and an afternoon of entertainment to 60 people. An army of incredible helpers transformed the Ansell Centre into a winter wonderland, and this year we are looking to repeat the experience. The Christmas Present Trust is now up and running, the hall is booked from Christmas Eve through to Boxing Day and we are now actively seeking support for this year’s event. So how can YOU get involved? • Financial donations of whatever size will be most welcome. Cheques should be made payable to The Christmas Present Trust. • If you have any spare time over the holiday season, there are a variety of roles to be filled, from setting up, driving guests to and from the event, cooking, serving, entertaining and clearing up on Boxing Day! Even a couple of hours of your time could make all the difference. • Promote the event at your local club or organisation. Nominate yourself, your friend, family member or neighbour to become part of this special occasion. The event is open to all those who would otherwise be on their own, but that may include partner with dementia, carer of whatever age, people with spouses in the armed forces or those whose partners are working. This event is not age restricted and we welcome you whatever your circumstances. • We are actively seeking sponsorship to guarantee this event over the next few years. If you would like to consider this, please get in touch with us. • The event itself is free, but places must be booked in advance. For this or in response to any of points raised above, please get in touch with Sarah or Simon Thompson on 01473 – 829246 or email Simon via hadleighsimon@gmail.com We will be holding an initial meeting for volunteers and interested parties who would like to know more, at the Ansell Centre on Wednesday 28th September at 7.30pm in the upstairs room of Hadleigh United Reformed Church – access via the Community Room, there is also a stair lift

It’s That Time Again The Summer is just behind us. The stores are already full of Autumn and Winter clothes - and scary though it is - Christmas is just sixteen weeks away. As you wonder about the difficulty of choosing presents, why not give a thought to having a picture framed? Whether it’s a selfie, professional portrait or certificate, any image can be improved by a wellchosen mount and frame combination. It may feel a little overwhelming when faced with a wall full of frame samples, but, working by appointment in my garden studio in George Street, I can offer you as much time and advice as you may need to get the perfect solution. You need never feel rushed and can get a quote with no obligation. There are new mouldings which are really beautiful and reflect style changes in interior décor, including some striking finishes that appear rough in texture and others that have a driftwood or sandblasted wood effect that accentuate the natural grain. We have been extending our range of services to plain wood frames painted in shades chosen from our selection of Farrow and Ball, Rustoleum and Myland paints. You may of course already own the shade you would like. As a former RAF and BA pilot Jim is well qualified to advise on military and aviation framing. This year we have framed a Hadleigh Cycling Club’s jersey that is on show in the Pedal Store; memorabilia and medals; ceramic panels of art; maps; stretched oils and stitchwork and even framed a plastercast imprint of a baby’s feet! Using an on-site Epson professional scanner or your own files and Epson pro photo-printer, we can, subject to copyright, reproduce old photos, posters or other images up to A2 size on the highest quality paper or canvas. Posters and most printed matter can be dry mounted or laminated, and there are many ways to decorate the frame to personalise it - so the only limit is your imagination. If you would like to discuss your thoughts try ringing Jim Duckham GCF on 01473 829825, he is a fully qualified framer and member of the Fine Art Trade Guild – but don’t let that put you off!

Thanks to HADAS for 10 Years of Support

Dining at...

We would like to thank HADAS for again organising the Brendan Oakes Memorial fishing match in support of the Brendan Oakes Trust. This year's event was held on Sunday 7th August at Bullocky Fenn and was contested by 26 anglers. The weather as usual was fantastic although a little windy, which helped to keep the temperature down. The Brendan Oakes Memorial Fishing Match winner this year was Mr 2016 winner Kevin Sparkes, with 2nd place Kevin Sparkes who John McAndrew, 3rd place Steve Atkinson receives the Brendan Kevin Wilding and Mark Snowling Oakes Memorial Trophy. John McAndrew and Steve Atkinson were placed 2nd and 3rd respectively on the day. A really big thank you goes to our sponsors for their support; Snowy's Bait and Tackle, Wentworth Eggs, Gadget Promotions and Allfix who between them supplied food for the BBQ, prize monies, raffle/auction items and the winners prizes. Thanks also goes to those anglers who brought along raffle prizes on the day. Two people are worthy of special mention and without whom this event would never have come into being and without their continued support would not have reached it's tenth year. Mark Snowling had the original idea to organise the match and through his business, Surefix Doors and Windows, has continued to support the event with prize money and food costs each and every year that it has run. Kevin Wilding is the Chairman of HADAS and has supported the event as one of the clubs annual matches allowing it to be held on HADAS water as well as rallying club members to come along each year. We never thought that we would still be running this annual event after ten years and without the support of HADAS members and local anglers we could not continue to raise funds for Brendan's Trust. Over the ten years the match has raised over £11,000 which as charity events goes doesn't sound like a lot of money, when compared to larger national charities and events, but it means the world to us as each and every penny goes to helping teenagers and their families cope with their diagnosis of cancer. As a small local charity we rely upon support such as this and when we can put this into the diary year after year it guarantees our continued survival. HADAS members should be really proud of what they have achieved over the past ten years and we really enjoy your company on the banks of the lake serving tea, coffee and biscuits before getting ready for the after match BBQ, raffle and auction. Thank you all for your continuing support of Brendan's Trust. Mark and Valerie Oakes

The summer programme has provided a vibrant and eclectic mix of opportunities for our learners. It has been a pleasure to welcome new students, taking a break from their usual activities to come and try something new over the holidays. Equally, it has been lovely to extend our tutor network, all of whom have shared their skills and experience with our learners at FUN. Big thanks must go to the local artists and practitioners who have taken part; Simone Beadle, Hazel Bradshaw, Sharon Cuthbert, Alison Hitchcock Brown, Becky Grist, Elaine Goh, Jackie Ord, Sarah Herbert and Mark Trewartha. Between them we have been able to offer a range of activities such as textiles, art, laughter yoga, music and rhythm, singing, tie dye, garden art, cooking and African drumming. A big thank you must also be extended to our wonderful volunteers, Vic, Sheila, Jill and Diane who have helped the summer programme run smoothly. A trip to the New Wolsey Theatre to see," A Midsummers Nights Dream" proved to be a highlight, as was the the summer bbq which was kindly supported by former GCSE music students and local musicians Jess, Emma and Harriet who provided the entertainment. Our new term starts on Monday 12th September. In addition to our usual activities programme of art, drama, craft and music, we are extending our provision in response to demand, to include life skills, laughter yoga, make.cook.eat.lunch and an enterprise project. Holly raises over £800 in ‘Brave the Shave’ Holly Nixon has raised over £800 from sponsorship and donations after a ‘Brave the Shave’ event in memory of her grandma Joan, who died from cancer earlier this year and whose long term battle set Holly on this fundraising path. On Friday 29th July at a family get together we had Hollys head shave at 8pm followed by a party both for Holly and her sister who was 21. The evening went extremely well and Holly allowed various people the opportunity to cut individual plaits from her head. There were 16 plaits in total as Holly wanted as many people to be able to get involved with her experience and each plait would be maximum length for "the little princess trust" to whom the hair is being donated. We had some older members who know people now suffering and some as young as 6 who will have gained an experience not easily forgotten. Not satisfied with just braving the shave, Holly was determined to show her dedication to the cause by going still further and having her head shaved until she was completely bald!! This caused further uproar with the crowd who thoroughly enjoyed shaving patterns into the now short hair. The final step having it wet shaved to the scalp. As you can imagine we cant explain how proud we are of our daughter and how proud all the family is. I know grandma would have been extremely proud of what Holly has done as Macmillan offered not only grandma, but the whole family, excellent care. So many people don't yet realise how much they will need the kind of support and help they offer towards the end of life. But it is a sad fact that so many will eventually find them invaluable. Holly would also like you to say thank you for all the support she has received from people local to her and online, it has been quite remarkable. Paul & Sarah Nixon There is still time to donate! https://bravetheshave.org.uk/shavers/holly-nixon/

Fidelis Activity News

The Oddfellows:- Today’s Oddfellows takes inspiration from the original society for the ‘ODD’ fellows, or those who could not be categorized into specific guilds. Some of its groups or lodges date back to the 18th century. Wendy Atkins, long standing official of the Ipswich branch, outlined the history of the organisation which was set up to protect and care for their members and communities at a time when there was no welfare state or NHS. The aim was and still is to provide help to members and communities when they need it. The friendly societies are non-profit mutual organisations owned by their members. All income is passed back to the members in the form of services and benefits. Although the present day Oddfellows, who come from all walks of life, enjoy a variety of social activities, the underlying role of the worldwide organisation is still one of support and care. Croquet:- By popular request we returned to Ipswich Croquet Club for another afternoon of this enjoyable but highly skilful version of the game. With two experienced players on hand it wasn’t long before members were successfully able to manoeuvre their ball through the hoops and apply some competitive tactics too. A thoroughly relaxing afternoon in the beautiful surroundings of Fynn Valley Golf Club where the croquet club is located. The Gentle Ramblers:- This month’s walk saw the Fidelis ramblers exploring the picturesque surroundings of Flatford Mill. After an exhilarating trek the group enjoyed a well-earned comfort stop at the National Trust tea room there.

Saturday 17th September – Book signing 10.30am to 12pm Dr Nicholas Amor ~ Five hundred years ago south Suffolk was among the richest regions in England and one of the most industrialised in all Europe. In the late Middle Ages the growth in the county’s woollen cloth industry was phenomenal, easily out-pacing all others in England. The great churches at Hadleigh, Lavenham and Long Melford bear witness to the wealth created. Inspired by his deep love of his county’s history, and using sources previously untapped by textile historians, Dr Amor explains how and why this happened in his new book From Wool to Cloth: The Triumph of the Suffolk Clothier. The book begins with a nationwide survey of English cloth-making in the Middle Ages and an exploration of the reasons - physical geography; economy and technology; and society - for its fluctuating fortunes. Subsequent chapters focus on Suffolk. They consider the wool trade and the role of woolmen; the various stages of cloth production and finishing; and the rise of the clothier in the second half of the fifteenth century. This is history from the bottom up, told through the lives of men and women who made the cloth – card-makers, spinsters, weavers, fullers, dyers, shearmen and clothiers. DR NICHOLAS AMOR is chairman of the Suffolk Institute of Archaeology and History. He recently retired as a solicitor and lives with his family in Stanningfield, close to the heart of Suffolk’s medieval industrial belt. Made with Love Demand is high for the items carefully made by the Hadleigh based Country Threads Group. Their highly desirable handmade merchandise just flies off the shelves of the shop at the St Elizabeth Hospice Day Centre. To replenish the stock and keep the revenue coming for the Hospice, the group recently held another of their all day workshops. Throughout the day members stitched, knitted, crotched and glued a wide variety of most attractive goodies for the popular Hospice outlet which is part of their Made with Love Project. Apart from baby clothes and greetings cards, unusual Christmas novelties were included as these will be on everyone’s shopping lists after the summer break. Happily, it’s not all work and no play as there is still time for plenty of laughter, and refreshment breaks throughout the day. Job satisfaction is also high on the list because the ladies know that their work will be well received and that it sells exceptionally well. James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk Over recent years life has not been a bundle of laughs for rail passengers in my constituency. Yet for all the service disruption and endless frustrations on the Greater Anglia service, we finally have some really good news. I know those who have had to endure the worst of Abellio's service will have had very mixed emotions on hearing of their success in winning the new decade's worth of franchise. Yet I can honestly say that the new prospectus from Abellio exceeds all my best hopes and expectations. Going into the tender, we all hoped that we would get new rolling stock on the main line. I even dreamt that one of the bidders might propose sprucing up the branch line trains such as those which run out of Sudbury to Marks Tey. In fact, we have a commitment to replace the entire fleet of trains at every point on the Anglian network. Aside from the obvious implications for better and more reliable services on the mainline, the commission for new hybrid trains that can run on both diesel and electric has enabled Abellio to commit to extending the Gainsborough line to run through from Sudbury to Colchester - both North station and Colchester Town. I am also delighted that there is a commitment for flexible ticketing, including the possibility of part-time season tickets, something that I have campaigned for and held a House of Commons adjournment debate on in March. Yet, whether my constituents join the service at Sudbury or directly on the main line from Manningtree, Ipswich or Colchester, there is something for everyone. 1,043 new, state of the art carriages between January 2019 and September 2020 to support the faster timetable, with a full programme of refurbishment for the current fleet in the meantime; free Wi-Fi for all passengers on trains and at stations; by 2021, there will be 32,000 more seats on services arriving at London Liverpool Street in the morning peak. Naturally, there are caveats. We need Network Rail to deliver their side of the bargain. Also, change like this takes time - but I sincerely believe the wait will be worth it.

The Boule-in Autumn Fair Saturday 10th - Sunday 18th Sptember With the national interiors magazine ‘Living Etc’ recently describing The Boule-in’s London shop as ‘Must visit - sells authentic French homeware with an industrial vibe - strictly no froufrou’ then clearly a visit to their charming French Fair ‘Fête du Coing’ in Bildeston is the prefect way to enjoy that ‘je ne sais quoi’ French experience without the queues at Dover! “We are very lucky” says Cathy Bullen, proprietor of the French boutique store, “We¹ve had some amazing write-ups in national magazines this summer, not only did 'Living Etc' write about our London shop but we were voted one of the 50 best antique fairs in the UK by ‘Homes and Antiques’ magazine! I think it’s because of our policy to source entirely from France, seeking out original and authentic pieces of furniture, collectables and gardenalia that makes us a bit different”. There’s also the charm of their setting - The Boule-in fairs are held in a delightful English country garden, courtyard and barn. “Yes, it’s amusing that the French garden furniture always looks best when set among our English flowers” laughs Cathy, and this summer their entente cordiale is spreading a little further as The Boule-in is hosting it¹s first French Fair in Bridport, Dorset. It seems that everyone wants to enjoy a little of their Ooh la la! The Boule-in, Bildeston "Fête du Coing" runs from Saturday 10th until Sunday 18th September 2016 between 10am and 5pm daily. www.boule-in.co.uk

Hadleigh Healing Society So many acts of violence happening in ordinary towns, cities and streets you are wondering where next, am I safe, and the biggest question of all “WHY”. That is the question everyone would like to know the answer too. Should we be looking after our mentally distressed people better, be more sympathetic to their cries for help before they reach crisis point. Or, does it go deeper than that. Are there people so disenchanted with the way we live our lives that they seek a more radical solution to society. There is no one simple answer to the question except that it does cause a great deal of concern to many. If this causes you to feel fearful and anxious please come and talk to one of qualified registered healers in confidence. We might not have all the answers but we will listen. Please telephone 01473 823282 (answer machine) or log onto www.hadleighhealingsociety.org for an appointment. We are holding another Clairvoyant Day on Saturday, 17th September 10am – 4pm. There will be three mediums who can give a 20 minute private reading for £12. If you would like an appointment please book early because from previous Clairvoyant Days the appointments get taken quickly. Ring giving your name and telephone number clearly and we will get back to you.

Increase your Energy Efficiency Rating In an uncertain world, Energy on Tap Limited can give you one cast iron guarantee - in the words of orphan Annie “The sun’ll come out tomorrow”. The sun is the world’s power station and at anytime provides 5000 times more energy than we could ever use. Solar power is now a mainstay in the nation’s energy mix. Less certain, but still causing huge concern around the planet is ‘Global Warming’. Whatever your views on this, the planet’s leaders are committed to taking action and that means changes. Clean energy is now a global currency that we are all trading in. Have you noticed that everything from washing machines to cars to houses now comes with an A to G Energy Performance Rating. ‘A’ being the best. A good EPC rating gives a good indication of the household’s running costs. In a home with a rating of F or G the heating bills are likely to be the biggest drain on the monthly budget. The higher you are on the scale the more attractive your property will be to prospective buyers. There are a number of measures that you can take to improve your rating, some relatively inexpensive. A 4kWp solar PV system can increase your rating by as much as 12 points, a significant rating improvement. For advice on energy efficiency, ring Mark at Energy on Tap Limited on 07780 975787

SKy Watch

The Ring Nebula

Waterfield House Grays Close, Hadleigh, Ipswich IP7 6AG

Good Quality Care at a Fair Price Residential, Dementia and Respite Care

This month I thought I'd call upon all of you with large binoculars or small telescope in a hunt for the Ring Nebula or as it is catalogued as sky objects, M57. The graphic shows where to look for it and it is well placed for us in the September skies. To maximise your chances of capturing it you'll need the darkest skies you can get to , no Moon or streetlights can be around or you will struggle. The Nebula is conveniently placed between the two bottom stars of Lyra called Sholiak and Suiafat, which themselves are very prominent with the naked-eye. Once located, the ring looks like a grey ring, small bright but hazy compared with the sharp pinpoint stars that surround it. A 3" scope (76 mm) will pick it up well, but anything with a larger aperture will show it far better. What we are seeing:- This Nebula is a cloud of cold gas, mostly hydrogen and helium, and is very tenuous, having less than a quadrillion of the density of air on Earth. This gas is expanding away in all directions from a small hot central star, too faint to be seen with a telescope of under 12" aperture, this stars light illuminates the gas causing it to glow. It lies at a distance from Earth of 2,300 light years and has a magnitude of 8.8, which is below naked-eye limit (magnitude 6.5) but within the limit of 10x50 binoculars. Photographs taken and studied over the last half century show that the Nebula is expanding outward at a rate that equates to a mean speed of 25 km/s, or 55,923 mph. The colour image you see in the picture here shows a blue-green tinge that is caused by the doubly ionised oxygen emission lives at 495.7 and 500.7 nm. These bands occur in conditions of very low density with only a few atoms per cubic centimetre. The outer reddish hue is caused by hydrogen emission at 656.3 nm. The star that illuminates the gas was discovered by Hungarian astronomer Jeno Gothard on September 1st 1886. It is a white dwarf star which is primarily composed of carbon and oxygen and a mass of 0.61 that of our Sun and a surface temperature of 125,000 deg Kelvin or 124,726 deg Celsius it is 200 times more brighter than our sun, but is dim because of the size of it and vast distance. The central star is technically blue, but now it has blown away its outer atmosphere, it is destined to become a white dwarf. The star blew off its outer layers some 20,000 years ago and the ring in actual size is some 0.4 light years in diameter, or 32,000 astronomical units or 2,976,000,000,000 miles, a truly vast area. This is a great comparison to our Sun. In some 4.5 billion years time, our very own star will do exactly as this star did 20,000 years ago. Our Earth and every single object within the Solar System will become much like the gas ring in the picture above. In truth we are destined to be turned to minute particles, dispersed into deep space. And on that bombshell, I wish you all luck in observing this sky gem. Till next month, clear skies. If you have any questions please email me on neilnorman-03@gmail.com

Kersey Mill Newsletter It is anticipated within the next six weeks to complete Phase 2 of the restoration program. The remaining valley and flooring repairs is just what’s remaining to be completed.. Once this is completed this should result in the mill being removed from the ‘at risk register’. Our recent fundraising summer ball was a huge success. 130 guests enjoyed a beautiful summers evening Picture shows repair works with a delicious meal, great music to Valley and above all a thrilling auction raising funds towards Phase 2 of the restoration. It was lovely to see so many people from the local community supporting the event. You looked so glamorous and smart. We are truly thankful to all those involved who helped. Very Special thanks to The Venue, Switch Recruitment, JLS Catering, Toppesfield, Jack Cardy, Phil Westley, Georgette Fawley and to all those who so generously gave donations. The third phase of restoration will commence in early 2017, more on this in due-course. We have seen many visitors to the mill recently that included a special meeting and tour of the mill conducted by Bill Griffiths (Millwright) for S.P.A.B. who were invited to visit Kersey Mill by local architect Matthew Kennington. Matthew first came to visit us whilst working for Historic England; it is very clear when speaking with Matthew that he is very passionate about heritage buildings and appreciates the traditional building techniques that have been used within the restoration. Bev and Derek Bowry have been to visit the work place of their ancestor Benjamin Mason. Bev is the 1st cousin 3 times removed of Benjamin Mason who was the miller in Kersey in the mid 1800s. Bev says “We've only recently been looking closely into this side of my family, I have always been aware that some were millers. Ben's brother Philip was the miller at Ben Mason at Kersey Mill circa 1900 Dedham. Ben and Philip were the nephews of Philip Bacon Mason my 2 x great granddad and my grandfather Frederick Mason had a brother called Philip who was also a miller”. Bev continues” My husband and I were actually in Kersey on Monday visiting the churchyard with my brother and his wife who were over from Paris. We were specifically looking at the graves of Benjamin Mason the miller and other ancestors buried there. My husband and I have done a lot of genealogy concerning one part of my maternal grandfather's family and the connections we have discovered between the Masons, and other folk buried near to them in the churchyard, has proven rather surprising and somewhat 'freaky' to us to say the least Bev and Derek plan to return with other family members during Heritage week September 8th -11th when the mill along with thousands of other building will be open, all the volunteers across the country invite you to experience local history, architecture and culture. All for free. What will you discover?

Can I create a lifetime trust to benefit my children?

For you and your family, it’s got to be Gotelee

Offices in Hadleigh, Ipswich, Felixstowe, Melton and Woodbridge

01473 822102 gotelee.co.uk

From September 2016 maintenance grants will no longer be available for new university students and with tuition fees already applying to university courses, many young adults are finding it increasingly difficult to get a foot on the housing ladder. Parents often ask us if they can create a trust to save for their children. A trust is a way of managing assets for people. There are different types of trusts and they are all taxed differently. The age at which a child is entitled to any of the trust assets, if at all, can be determined by the person who creates the trust. Lifetime trusts (as opposed to a trust established by a will) set up by parents for children or step children under 18 who have never been married or in a civil partnership can be created and are known as Parental Trusts or Parental Settlements. Unfortunately, they may not be particularly attractive because income exceeding ÂŁ100 arising from Parental Trusts is taxed as the parent's income while the child is under 18. The Revenue also considers that a direct gift of income producing assets by a parent to his or minor child or step child falls within the definition of 'settlement' for the purposes of the same legislation so that any income paid to the child in respect of those gifted assets is treated as the income of the parent, unless it does not exceed ÂŁ100 for the tax year. The same can even apply to the gift of cash. The idea is to stop an arrangement which effectively transfers income earned by one person to another resulting in a reduction of overall tax liability. These rules do not apply to trusts created by grandparents for grandchildren who are under 18, meaning a trust created by a grandparent may be a more attractive option. When establishing a trust, inheritance tax and capital gains tax charges may also arise. The creation of a trust is a complicated area of law and there are other options outside the scope of the article. Therefore you should always seek professional advice to ensure what is suitable for your circumstances and that you do not have any nasty 'tax' surprises. Getting the Clooney swagger Hadleigh’s local businesses are ready for growth, with a confidence about the strength and opportunities the town affords. At the first Hadleigh Business Breakfast Forum it was clear that entrepreneurs, retailers, councillors and professionals found the place good for business, however, there was also a sense of a town not quite achieving its potential. Whilst neighbouring towns and areas seemed confident in promoting their unique character, Hadleigh seems to hide its own attractions under a bushel … and there seemed strong support for change. The 35 attending were asked what concerns or opportunities they saw for Hadleigh. The need for growth (preferably the right kind of development!) was the major theme that emerged. Hadleigh needs to embrace and identify how it can both grow as a town, but also act as a magnet for investment. This means working harder to ensure that the ‘Hadleigh Pound’ (from residents in both towns and surrounding villages) stays in the town and that we attract more people to this unique ‘real’ market town. A better market may well help deliver this, but a determined promotion and concerted action amongst businesses and communities was seen as important. This growth needs to acknowledge and build on the character and strong sense of community - not mimicking others, but developing our own ‘swagger’ - as Danny Nistor the Owner of Le Petit Paris said: ‘we don’t have to be George Clooney to like what he wears’. Poor communication and networking, a lack of leadership and an innate resistance to change were cited as some of the reasons for the situation. The lack of vision for using town assets, not offering young people opportunities and poor marketing were also mentioned - ‘Why couldn’t East House be converted into business units?' was one interesting proposal. Against this, the real sense of community within the town was seen as a major asset. And, it was noted, the success of and support for local community sports and leisure clubs also hinted at the strength and untapped potential bubbling under the surface. The need for strong leadership was the subject of the talk by Charlie Warburton, an entrepreneur who is also Chairman of Hadleigh Rugby Club. Whilst underplaying his own successes, he highlighted his experience of the factors that made for a successful leader: employing people smarter than yourself and securing buy-in were critical. Referencing Steve Jobs, he noted how important it was for leaders to ‘focus' and, in particular, how it’s often as important to decide what not to do as it is to decide what to do. He cautioned about ‘over delegating’ - it is vital as a leader to lead by example - be ready to roll up the sleeves and pitch in. The value of 'noticing' and acknowledging effort and commitment were key, but equally accepting that the buck stops in your in-tray - ‘Take the blame, not the acclaim’. The growth of Hadleigh Rugby Club over the last decade was attributed as much to the injection of volunteer hours as it was to increased revenue - people powering growth. He shared his belief that ‘...more visible and tangible business community leadership is needed in Hadleigh to help: fuel business growth, promote the town as a great place to visit and do business in and create clear pathways into local jobs for young adults. Bottling the positive spirit that was palpably evident within the Forum might not be a bad first step.' Capturing this zeitgeist, the Forum could be a blue touch paper for getting Hadleigh going; feedback was very supportive of regular meetings and to get challenging topics raised and addressed. Foremost was the recognition that collaboration offered solutions that business could get behind and those looking to lead the town forward would get the support for embracing sustainable, characterful growth. NEXT MEETING: Given feedback and a kind offer from Lorna Pissarro, the second meeting will be at The Ram on Wednesday 21st September. Smart timings: open at 7.00, breakfast 7.30. Panel 8.00. Formal finish 9.00 (but can stay on and network). Continental or English buffet £10 per place. Marketing Hadleigh A panel of marketeers will be asked to give you top tips for promoting a local business and, secondly, how Hadleigh should be marketed. We will ask them to come up with proposals for a simple, inexpensive collaboration to ensure that the HBBF retains a practical focus. Places will be limited, so ensure you book the date and your place early. jmoore.suffolk@gmail.com, 07 545 545 744 Search facebook: Hadleigh Business Breakfast Forum

business, community groups and Town and district Council representatives. I would like to thank Tracey Loynds and The Leisure Centre Staff for hosting the meetings, enabling us to have good facilities to support our work. The October meeting was the first of three occasions over the year when we addressed Connecting Business and Tourism, as a main agenda item. Did this produce any outcomes? In November it was agreed that Hadleigh should have a dedicated Tourism website. Despite difficulties and uncertain funding I thank those who remained focused on achieving the website www.hadleighsuffolk.co.uk . While the website has now become live, this is only the beginning of the process to improve and develop it. Addressing barriers to Visitor Services provision also included organising a cost effective business model for face to face information and the availability of park up space for coaches. Beeston’s Coaches have agreed to make coaches and drivers welcome for short stay. This helps but is still not ideal and the issue remains a priority. Joint working on Face to face provision between the Library, St Mary’s Church and the Visitor Services/Guide trainees has identified the shared offer. New walking tours and a pilot for “on street” Visitor Services are being developed. Efforts to engage business, involved a first and second letter, hand delivered. The response was disappointing. Ultimately, after exploring different, ways of jointly financing the hanging baskets and their maintenance; the simplest and most cost effective solution was for floral baskets to become an option for each shop to purchase their own. All our thanks should go to Stuart Service who made baskets available to buy, taking them “right to the door”. Since the revival volunteers are helping support shops with their watering. We can have beautiful hanging baskets with just a little joint effort from everyone. “You can keep knocking at the door but sometimes you just have to wait for someone to open it from the other side.” JS An agreed structure and way of working for the Steering Group was formally adopted with the new Terms of Reference in January. This was been reviewed and was felt to be working well and did not require any changes at this time. The meetings in February and April took up topics submitted by residents concerning road safety and security for our homes and businesses. In addition we were made aware of the Dementia Friendly Business programme, enabling us to understand the ways in which those with dementia can be supported. These discussions highlighted the need for adopting consistent safety measures in relation to property, personal safety and the wellbeing of others. We all want more to be done by those we have traditionally believed are there to “do the job.” However, understanding and in some measure, accepting the changing priorities and the financial constraints; active communities do make a difference. The new Tidy Town Group of volunteers is making a visible difference in and around the town. They have been diligently raising awareness and motivating the whole community not to let litter and dog fouling blight our streets and open spaces. They are regularly reporting to the Steering Group their activities and concerns. Their contribution also includes the work begun by volunteers to re-plant and maintain the new Cedric Morris Gardens in Magdalen Street. The support of the Town and District councils has met the cost of some equipment and plants, to help enable the group. Whenever possible the initiative has been taken by the community to “get things done.” working collaboratively with statutory authorities. The future of the Steering Group and its purpose are up for discussion. How we value its effectiveness on issues and what we see it achieving are up to you. Main Agenda item for next meeting: Introducing the Corn Exchange Business Centre NEXT MEETING: 5th September 4.15pm - 6.00pm at Hadleigh Pool and Leisure in the Social Room If you would like to attend the meeting or have suggestions for agenda items please email the Chairman snowdonjane@hotmail.co.uk

The end of the summer term is here! The final few weeks of the year have been really busy and lots of fun! We hope everyone has a lovely summer and look forward to seeing the children again in September. The Rocky Monster Show The children in Key Stage 2 put on a marvellous end-of-year show! The ‘Rocky Monster Show’ was full of funny moments, sound effects, great songs and super dance routines. The children worked really hard to rehearse and prepare for their performances and their acting was fantastic. We were all really entertained and still have the songs stuck in our minds! Thanks to all the staff members and volunteers who organised the show and created brilliant props and scenery. Also, thanks to the parents who helped with costumes and learning lines. School Leavers Goodbye to all the children who are leaving us at the end of the summer term. We wish them lots of luck and success for the future. The Leavers’ Service at St Mary’s Church was a chance for the Year 6 children to celebrate their time at St Mary’s. Thanks to the Very Reverend Martin Thrower, who gave a talk about supporting and helping one another through life – the children aren’t on their own! The children shared some great memories of their primary years, including times when they had fun and made each other laugh! After achievements assemblies in the morning, the Year 6s also enjoyed a leavers’ lunch and an ice cream party on the final day of term. Well done to all of the Year 6 children; they have worked incredibly hard and we are very proud of all they have achieved. They are certainly ready for all the challenges ahead! Disco Thank you to the Parent Support Group for organising the end-of-term disco. The children had lots of fun and showed off their best dance moves! There was a great atmosphere and it was a lovely way to end the year. Bradfield Woods The Year 3 children in Beech Class explored Bradfield Woods. They learned about the woods and the various animals that live there, thinking carefully about how animals adapt to different habitats. One of the highlights was an invertebrate hunt. The children learned all about the different trees that make up this ancient woodland and learned to calculate the age of a tree by measuring the girth of the tree and then dividing the measurement by 2.5. It is great to have the opportunity to learn outdoors and everyone had a super time. Ash Class assembly It is always lovely when the children lead assembly! Recently it was the turn of the Reception children in Ash Class. They told the wonderful story of the mouse and the lion. They acted it out superbly and the whole school got involved in the dancing! The story had an important message about how the huge lion needed help from the little mouse. Well done to all the children, who worked really hard; thank you to all the parents who came to watch them perform.

Year 2 Trip to Landguard Point The children in Year 2 had a really nice day at Landguard Point. They were really lucky with the weather! They enjoyed a tour around the fort and saw where soldiers slept. It was fascinating to see the moat, where the drawbridge is and the replica guns. After lunch, the children explored the nature reserve and beach. Our guide talked about what might live in the plants around us, and taught us all about Sea Kale! Then the children got to comb the beach for shells, stones and mermaid’s purses! Thank you to everyone who helped us on the day! Sing Suffolk We were delighted to be involved in the Sing Suffolk project led by Tracey Rayner. It was a great opportunity to have fun and work with other local schools. The children learned and rehearsed songs for a big performance, involving a number of Suffolk schools. The final show was at Whatfield, where the children performed brilliantly in front of their parents. Well done to all the children for their fantastic singing! Reading Dog The children in the Early Years Foundation Stage were really excited to welcome Murphy, a very patient Labrador, into the school! Murphy loves reading and the children were very enthusiastic about sharing their books with him! First, the teacher read ‘Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy’ to Murphy and the children because that’s his favourite story! The children were then able to read a familiar book from home or a book from school to Murphy. He listened really well and was very entertained by their reading. Afterwards, the children wrote thank you notes to Murphy. He was very well behaved and was rewarded with a Jumbone and his favourite-a tin of Frankfurter sausages!! Special Days The children have enjoyed various special theme days this month. The Year 1s in Oak Class held a great banquet with their parents as part of their ‘Castles’ topic. The Year 6 children participated in a sports fun day at St Mary’s Primary School in Woodbridge. This was a super event for schools in the St Edmundsbury and Ipswich Diocesan Multi Academy Trust. There were lots of sporting experiences on offer, including curling! Everyone had a great time. For the children in Rowan and Chestnut classes, a real highlight has been the ‘street party’ to celebrate VE Day, which was linked to their history topic. They made evacuee labels and boxes for gas masks and learned all about using clothes coupons because of rationing. The children made a party lunch, baked carrot biscuits and made homemade lemonade. After listening to Winston Churchill’s VE Day speech, they took their Union Flags and all the food outside for a great ‘street party’. The children were really engaged and enthusiastic about learning through such fun experiences. So here we are again at the end of another year! Once again, we hope everyone enjoys a well-earned summer break!

Art In The Afternoon The long established Art Club recommences for the Autumn season in the Seminar Room in the Hadleigh Library on September 6th at 2pm until 4pm. New members are always welcome, just turn up bringing something to do. The session begins with “Painting a bowl of fruit then on September 13 working from holiday sketches and photographs. September 20 the subject is Fungi and the following week there will be a portrait session. These are just suggestions, which it is hoped will inspire those who are stuck for a subject.

Parkinson’s Disease Sufferers

Suffolk County Council

I am trying to start a weekly / monthly get together of people with Parkinson's Disease. I have had PD for over 10 years now and know how important it has been for me having people who are Living with this disease to talk to and who can understand exactly what you are feeling has helped me through the darkest times. I was diagnosed at the age of 45 I was so shocked and frightened and knew little about PD and felt so alone but made friends through forums and joined The Parkinson’s UK Society who have been a great help and my story was in the latest edition of the magazine, ‘Julie's Story’. Please get in contact if you are interested and depending on numbers I can make plans to find a suitable venue for the get together. Please contact: Julie Phillips 01473 823665

Yoga at Sunrise for Lighthouse

Kathryn Grandon While the people of Hadleigh were tucked up in bed at 4.30am on Sunday 10th July, 15 wonderful, adventurous and generous folks joined me on the hills of Holbecks Park to welcome the new day with an hour and a half of Yoga. This all-abilities-workshop, which featured (naturally) Salute to the Sun as well as lots of gentle stretching and heart opening poses, was held to raise money for Lighthouse – an Ipswich based charity which aims to support and empower women and children who have suffered or are at risk of suffering from domestic abuse and violence. The session ended with fresh herb tea, strong coffee and vegan cake served on vintage china. It was a wonderful start to the morning and we raised £190 for Lighthouse. Thank you so much to all those who attended – and to Mr Wykes-Sneyd for allowing us to use the site. Summer Of Excess..? We all look forward to the summer and, thankfully, after an awful June, we’ve had a couple of good months this year. Days out at the seaside with the children, all-inclusive holidays and BBQs are to be enjoyed but we’re likely to overdo the ice creams, candy floss, fish & chips, burgers, beer, wine etc but they can do so much damage to our waistlines!! When we look at the holiday photos we swear “never again”! Were you hiding under your sarong on the beach while everyone else was enjoying the sun and came home lily-white as a result? If so, maybe now’s the time to deal with the holiday indulgence before we smother ourselves in our winter woollies and pretend we’re happy with the way we look! Now the children are back at school & before you know it we’ll be thinking about Christmas and getting into your party dress.....!!! It takes time to make changes permanently. We’re all going on a Summer Holiday It can sometimes be difficult for separated couples to make suitable holiday arrangements for their children, in particular during the summer. When parents arrange to spend time with their children over the holiday periods it can often lead to disputes based on each parent’s respective plans, their annual leave arrangements and holiday destinations. The key to ensuring the holiday arrangements progress as smoothly as possible is to communicate your plans as far in advance of the proposed holiday period. This would involve making holiday enquiries weeks and months in advance and discussing your plans with your former partner, before making any bookings. This will enable you both to ensure your plans do not clash with each other and more importantly it will provide the children with two holidays to enjoy. There can sometimes be circumstances where there is a dispute in regard to the holiday arrangements which cannot be resolved. This may involve the timing of the proposed holiday or the proposed destination. If an agreement cannot be reached and it is the parent’s plan to proceed with the intended holiday, the other parent has the option to make an application to the Court to stop the holiday from going ahead. A parent can apply for a Prohibited Steps Order to prohibit a child from being taken on a holiday. It would depend on how near you are to the proposed holiday as to whether an urgent application is required. The Court will take into consideration a number of factors when deciding whether a child should go on a certain holiday or not. The Court’s general principle is that it is in a child’s best interests to go on holiday. The Court will only grant a Prohibited Steps Order if they deem the holiday to place a child at risk of harm or if it is deemed not to be in their best interests. A few factors which may require an Order of the Court is if the proposed holiday destination is in a war torn area and there is a risk of danger. If the parent planning the holiday cannot provide suitable accommodation and return flight details, the Court may decide that they are at risk of not returning with the children and an Order may be granted in such circumstances. It is generally deemed to be in a child’s best interests to go away on a holiday and it would be expected of the parent planning the holiday to provide their former partner with contact details, accommodation and flight details in O advance. It is important to encourage children to go on holiday and it is in their best interests for the holiday arrangements to be discussed and planned in advance, which will in turn enable them to enjoy multiple holidays throughout the year. Volunteers help to make the streets sparkle! A group of community-minded residents have been busy transforming former ‘grot-spots’ of a Babergh town – after joining forces with their local councils to find a solution to their problem. The Tidy Town Hadleigh group was borne out of a national campaign earlier this year which encouraged people to go out on the streets and make the areas they live in nicer places to live in honour of the Queen’s 90th Birthday. Officers from Babergh District Council approached residents to launch a Clean for the Queen event back in April. After talking with some of the volunteers who turned out, both parties decided the volunteers should work together to become a regular group in a bid to create a sense of community spirit, civic pride in the town and to bolster the services provided the local councils. The volunteers quickly garnered support from Babergh, Hadleigh Town Council and the Hadleigh Steering Group and have been regularly tidying known hotspots, plus another area each week, around the town. It is hoped the success of this group and the blueprint of how they achieved it can be used to set up other Tidy Town groups across Babergh and Mid Suffolk. The group are keen that their work will try and combat careless littering in the town and will help to create a more attractive, cleaner, environment for residents, businesses, shoppers and visitors. The group have been sponsored by the town council with high visibility tabards to wear while tidying, while Babergh ensures they have enough bin bags and litter pickers to carry out their work. The volunteers then leave the collected waste in an agreed spot and the bags are promptly collected the next working day. It is a system which is working well – and really starting to achieve results around the town! Now the group, which is running itself with minimal input from the councils, is taking an extra step and encouraging all of the businesses in Hadleigh to take part and sign up to the Tidy Town Pledge. Businesses who sign up will be given a certificate to display in their window and will be encouraged to: • Keep their frontage clean and clear of litter • Help spread the anti-litter message to both customers and staff (quite often staff smoke outside their own premises and throw their cigarette ends on the ground) • Ensure that their own waste is stored correctly so it is not an eyesore or becomes litter • Let us know if street bins near their premises require emptying Cllr Jan Osborne, Babergh District Council’s Community Capacity Building and Engagement Portfolio Holder, said: “Our Hadleigh volunteers are to be applauded – they noticed areas in the town that were looking a bit tired and littered and decided to do something about it. Babergh has street cleansing teams in, and around, Hadleigh but the volume and regularity of the littering means that we do need our communities to help us boost our daily and weekly responses. “We hope that other towns and volunteers will feel inspired by the results that the Hadleigh team are achieving and set up their own Tidy Town groups. Babergh wants to encourage all of our communities to tackle problems head on and with our advice and guidance we can work together to find those muchneeded solutions.” Cllr Anita Young, a town councillor and a volunteer from Our Tidy Town – Hadleigh, Suffolk group, said: I look forward to litter-picking with the Tidy Town Volunteers, it is a productive way of exercising and an enjoyable way of meeting new people, making friends and socialising as we pick and afterwards. It is important to all of us to see Hadleigh looking at its best and I am heartened that so many businesses and individuals are coming forward to take part and sign the pledge. And Carol Bailey, Hadleigh Town Council clerk, added: “Hadleigh Town Council are pleased and proud to support the Tidy Town Hadleigh Group in their efforts to ensure that Hadleigh is a clean and attractive town for its residents and visitors. With recent cuts in services it is commendable that a volunteer group has come forward to undertake this work and Hadleigh Town Council hopes that residents and visitors will respect the work that has already been done and will help in the future by ensuring that they dispose of their own waste in the correct manner.” If you would like to join the volunteers and would like more information please contact: ourtidytown@gmail.com or find them, Our Tidy Town – Hadleigh, Suffolk group, on Facebook. Other towns and villages that would like to set up their own volunteering group should contact Sarah Carter, Babergh and Mid Suffolk Public Realm Officer, on sarah.carter@baberghmidsuffolk.gov.uk or call 01449 724946.

Ken’s SESAW News Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare Reg charity no 1124029 After a hectic July and holiday season August, I’m looking forward to September when the equilibrium is restored. Ollie and his feline pals don’t pay much attention but we dogs miss our human friends when they go away. Thank you to everyone who helped raise over £4000 at our Open Day, Fun Dog Show and BBQ. All the food was gone by hometime, visitors played games, met the animals and listened to the Long Melford Silver Band. Even the weather was good. Local SESAW fundraiser, Andy Cooper, endured all kinds of weather during his grueling three month sponsored walk from Land’s End to John ‘O Groats. Our hero was glad to be home after wearing out three pairs of boots during the 1200 mile trek. It’s not too late to donate to Andy’s Justgiving page at: www.justgiving.com/Andy-Cooper67 We are holding an Autumn Fair at Great Bentley Village Hall on 18th September followed by a Supper Dance, 7.30pm on 24th in Assington Village Hall. Tickets £12.50 each, phone 01206 263113 to book. Back to SESAW for a Book, Record and Camera Sale, 10-1pm on 1st and 2nd October. Whilst other dogs go to new homes, Lexi still waits for that special family. She can never have enough cuddles and is good with children, although she has the staffie habit of occasionally knocking the younger ones over. Lexi needs to be the only pet and requires a secure garden to wander in. Mum says we also have many cats and kittens with endearing personalities that happen to be black or black and white. Personally I don’t understand what difference it makes. Surely everyone loves us animals whatever our appearance, especially little dogs that are mostly black like me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua? Helping people to overcome their difficulties with hypnotherapy is so rewarding Hypnotherapy is a natural and non invasive therapy, which can be successfully used in conjunction with orthodox medicine. Hypnotherapy can help you to become the person you want to be, achieve your full potential and add to your well being. Many people today suffer with anxiety, which can come in many forms and presents a whole host of problems and difficulties. It’s lovely to hear from various clients that since hypnotherapy they are now able to go and socialise, find work, travel and just get on with enjoying life again. Since I started practicing as a hypnotherapist I have helped a client with gaining motivation, one client has gone on to successfully complete courses in alternative therapies, increase his fitness and started an exciting new chapter in his life. While another client became motivated to start using a healthier eat plan to help her lose weight. Insomnia is another widespread difficulty. Following therapy with me one client improved their sleeping from two and a half hours a night to seven hours of uninterrupted sleep....she was thrilled! “Hypnotherapy can transform lives.” Telephone: 01473 829 729 - Mobile: 0777 597 5500 Email: maggiethurlow@outlook.com www.maggiethurlow.co.uk

Hadleigh & District Garden Club The July "Garden Safari" had been a great success despite the inclement weather and all the members involved with its' organisation were thanked. At the August meeting we welcomed Phil Taylor from Brett Valley Landscaping and Design. He gave a wide ranging talk on "Trees for your Garden". As some of Phil's work is on country estates, he gave details of some of the large trees used such as a mature Blue Cedar at £4,200 (plus planting costs). The Cedar of Lebanon (£12,000 + ) and the Tulip Tree (£6,000+). Where space permits Phil always advises to plant a variety of trees in case a disease strikes. In some large parks the trees suffer from compaction of the roots and Phil has to aerate the soil with his specialist equipment. For the smaller gardens that most of us own Phil recommended Magnolia denudata ‘yellow river’, this produces large fragrant yellow flowers in April/May; another recommended tree was Malus evereste which has wonderful spring blossom and Autumn fruits which stay on the tree until after Christmas. All the members were given a book which had photographs and full details of all the trees Phil had mentioned in his talk. Our next meeting in the Town Hall is on Monday 12th September at 7.30pm when Matthew of Riverside Bulbs will be advising on the best bulbs to plant. The monthly competition is "The largest Sunflower". Visitors always welcome.

Down to Earth ...with Dave Not much to do on the allotment this month. Mainly harvesting the various crops that seem to come all at once this time of year. My runner beans were a bit slow to start cropping and we were started off by being given some by a fellow plot holder. Now they are growing quicker than we can eat them. Some will no doubt end up in the freezer, but they don’t taste as good once they have been frozen. I have sown some late turnip, swede and khol rabi, with luck we should get some baby roots before the winter. The sweet corn is doing very well behind its badger proof fence. You can’t beat a freshly picked corn on the cob. With more courgettes growing every day, some have been made into lovely courgette, potato and onion soup, all home grown. This freezes very well and will no doubt be welcome this winter. Some of the potatoes have been dug up, with no sign of the dreaded blight. They are quite safe left in the ground for a little while so long as it stays fairly dry. It has been a bit dry lately with some watering needed to the runner beans, courgettes and the new seeds. Water is precious thing and should be used carefully. Collect rainwater in butts, water the soil not the leaves, give priority to any new plants and plant them in the ground as soon as possible. Mulch wherever you can, mushroom compost is very good for this. Try to mulch on wet ground to help hold in the moisture. Keep any hanging baskets well watered, as once they dry out it can be very difficult to re-wet them. The only way may be to take the basket sown and soak it in a bucket of water for a couple of hours. When you cut your grass raise the height of the cut a little, it will still go brown with the sun, but as soon as we get rain it will green up. We made a visit to the R.H.S. garden at Hyde Hall Rettendon for the summer flower show, which seemed bigger and better this year, with more and better stalls, entertainment from a lovely harpist, a male close harmony singing group and driftwood sculptures from New Zealand, stalls packed with super plants and plenty of room to picnic by the lake. Whilst there I enquired about the giant pumpkin that is being grown in the vegetable garden there by one of the gardeners - Matthew Oliver. This is a real labour of love involving homemade liquid worm compost, dried blood, Epsom salts, hand pollination, early mornings and late nights. As covered in protective fleece it was not possible to see the actual size of any fruit but apparently it is growing well and Matthew is hopeful of a good result by October. That’s all for this time, Dave

Hadleigh Orchestra Conductor: Ute Cooper Leader: Lisa Middleton Thank you to the many people who supported our concert in June at Stokeby-Nayland. Your generous offering as you left enabled us to make a substantial gift to the Church and go a long way towards covering our costs. Rehearsals in preparation for our Christmas concert in December will begin on Monday Sept. 19th. at Beaumont Community school, Hadleigh, 7.30 – 9.30 p.m. We play a variety of music mainly but not only of the popular classical type. This is a good time to join the Orchestra, because we start with fresh music and a new beginning. We have vacancies in all string sections (violinists especially welcome, and another viola), and in the wind section would welcome another horn, bassoon, trumpet and trombone. If you would like to join or know more, please give me a ring on 01473 827242, or Jose on 01473 741055. John Druce (Chairman, Hadleigh Orchestra)

Dear Sir, It was very reassuring of Nick Gowrley, Leader of Mid Suffolk Council to reassure us that the move of both Babergh and Mid Suffolk Council’s to Endeavour House is just a "preferred option" A report was commissioned last year to look at the options for the move at a cost of £24,000. The remit was altered and the cost was increased a further £10,000. So, we have a spend of £34,000 on a report we do not know the results of and yet we have a Tory "preferred option" being openly discussed in advance of the publishing of this report. I am sorry but in times of austerity cuts this £34,000 is a complete waste of public money which would certainly pay for more grass cutting in public spaces for our kids to be able to play, more support for social services, education, mental health and more support for the elderly and vulnerable in our locality. Our councils prefer to spend money commissioning a report to tick all the boxes so they can clap each other on the back and say yes we are open and transparent but come up with their own idea in the end, and be wasters of our public money. They tell us they will be developing a hub, spoke and landing model. The landing points being the base in communities providing space for workers to hot desk. The spokes are the thread out into communities from either the hub or from a landing point. I am quoting from an article n the EADT. Does your head hurt too?? In plain English they mean a desk in a building with access to a PC and telephone to meet the public. Each Council already has their landing point in their local offices providing local services to local people that is why they are called Local Councils. Sue Monks, Hadleigh

Dear Sir, Each year the congregation at the United Reformed Church selects three local charities or community groups to support. This year the Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance was chosen as one of their beneficiaries. The Church is recognised supporter of the Alliance and has delivered dementia friends information sessions to many of the elders and congregation as. Working to become a dementia Hadleigh is something that we can only achieve by raising awareness and understanding to dementia. The HDAA would like to say a big thank you to Reverend Bryn Rickards and the whole congregation for their kind donation of £360. Elizabeth Meeks from the URC says “we really wanted to support the work of the Alliance. With greater understanding, we aim to support those living with dementia to live well. The URC hosts a come in for coffee morning each Tuesday from 10:30am to 11:30am and everyone is welcome, this includes those living with or without dementia.” Tracey Loynds Chair of the HDAA says “the alliance was thrilled to receive this wonderful donation. The URC and Ansell Centre have supported the Alliance since it was formed in September 2014. Monies will be used to raise awareness and understanding with an aim to making Hadleigh a dementia friendly town.” For more information on how to get involved call 01473 823470 or email hadleighdementiafriends@ssleisure.co.uk

Dear Sir, Hadleigh is a very generous town! On 15th July there was the Annual Street Collection for the Army Benevolent Fund (The Soldiers’ Charity). Three hours of collecting plus one or two ‘off-street’ donations raised £767.94. Particular thanks are due to the Hadleigh & District 41 Club, who have for several years teamed up with soldiers from 7 Aviation Battalion, REME, to man the collection, for their help and for a generous donation. The REME soldiers, as always, were a pleasure to work with. To all who gave (and maybe others) The Fund exists to help any soldier, serving or retired, who needs help. This includes everyone who was called up for National Service. There can be few families without an ex-service conscript in the group. In its daily work the fund supports over 70 other charities, like St. Dunstans, Soldiers Homes, SSAFA etc and works also overseas to help otherwise desperate individuals. So to all who gave - thankyou. John Hart

Dear Sir, Re: Grass cutting in open areas in Hadleigh. A number of residents have contacted me about the decline in the grass cutting in open areas in Hadleigh. The Beaumont Park site is going to be brought back into management over the next few weeks. It slipped through the net when this land was adopted and was not put into the Landscape Groups programme of work. Babergh were not given a full set of adoption maps by the developer and regrettably this particular site was missed. The landscape team are going to meet on site early August and agree what areas need to be cut and the work will be programmed in shortly afterwards. They will start by cutting an area around the play site and at the same time cut wide paths through the meadow areas. Later they will complete a community consultation on what they want from this open space and then adapt our management accordingly. I trust this will be satisfactory. Councillor Dr Siân Dawson, Hadleigh North District Councillor

Prisoners of War In this article we remember: Harry Frederick Durrant – 17 September 1916 Charles George Seager – 21 September 1916 Robert Hodgson Keynes – 29 September 1916 Private Harry Frederick Durrant was born in Angel Street in 1878 and attended Bridge Street school. After his marriage to Maud Keeble in 1902 he moved to 8 Angel Street, next to ‘Lenny’s Chippy’, since demolished to make way for Magdalen Road. He worked as a mat weaver at the cocoa matting factory at Brett Works. In September 1914 he volunteered for war service and on the 12 August 1915 saw action at Gallipoli when sixteen of his Hadleigh pals were killed. Fred survived but was taken prisoner. Initially held in Constantinople (present day Istanbul), he was later moved to Belemedik POW camp in the Taurus mountains of southern Turkey. This camp was established to accommodate a labour force working on the Berlin to Baghdad railway, a project that was started many years before the war and was intended to strengthen the links between the German and the Ottoman empires. Large parts of the line had been completed, but difficult sections in the mountains in Southern Turkey and Northern Syria were still unfinished. The urgency of the war made completing the line a priority and thousands of allied POWs were put to work on this railway. Conditions in the camps were austere. Life would have been extremely hard and disease was rife. However, Fred was able to write a number of postcards home, but delivery was spasmodic. In October 1916 six cards were received together and he appeared to be all right. Nothing more was heard until December when his wife was officially informed that Fred had died of dysentery on 17 September 1916. He was 38. Harry and Maud had 6 children, the youngest, Lilian, was born in January 1916 whilst her father was in captivity. The photograph of his wife, mother and children was most likely taken so that a copy could be sent to Harry. He was initially buried at Hadji kiri Cemetery, but after the war his body was moved to the Baghdad (North Gate) War Cemetery. Charles George Seager was born in 1887, baptised in the Congregational Chapel and lived his early life in Benton Street. At 13 years old he was also working in the cocoa matting factory. In 1905 on his 18th birthday, he joined the Royal Navy and served on board with the channel fleet. However, he had a poor disciplinary record and in April 1909 was dismissed from the Navy. By 1911 he enlisted into the Army and was based at Woolwich with the Royal Field Artillery (RFA). Sometime later he was posted to India to serve with the 76th Battery, 10th Artillery Brigade of the 6th (Poona) Division of the Indian

Army. At the outbreak of war the division were sent to Mesopotamia (modern day Iraq) with the objective of securing oil supplies. The British advanced towards Bagdad, but under pressure from the Ottoman forces were forced to retreat to the South. A decision was made to halt the retreat and set up a defensive position in the town of Kut al-Amara. By early December 1915, the advancing Ottomans laid siege to the town and after 147 days with no sign of relief and with supplies running low the British were forced to surrender on 29 April 1916. The 13,000 British POWs were marched 400 miles across the desert to Aleppo in Syria. We found very little information on Charles and do not know exactly how he died, but he was listed as died while a prisoner in Asia Minor on 21 September 1916 (4 days after the death of Harry Durrant). We suspect that he too was made to work on the notorious railway line and suffered a similar fate to Harry. Having no known burial, he is remembered on the Basra Memorial in Iraq. Private Robert Hodgson Keynes was born in Hadleigh in 1895 and was brought up by his grandparents Samuel and Ellen Keynes at 85 Angel Street. Samuel was a farmer and carrier and Robert, who was known as Robin, was educated at the British School (now the Ansell Centre) in the Market Place and at the new Council School in Station Road. In 1911 he moved to Canada. By 1915 he was living at Compton in Quebec Province and working as a lumberjack. In May of that year he enlisted with the 2nd Canadian Mounted Rifles. One year later he was posted to the Western Front travelling there via England where he was able to visit family. In September 1916 he was a ‘bomber’ operating trench mortars with the Canadian 3rd Division and fighting to take the village of Courcelette on the Somme battlefield. He was killed in action on 29 September 1916 when his battalion launched an attack from the Zollern trench to the north west of village. His body was buried where he fell, but was later lost. Robin Keynes is the only Hadleigh man known to be remembered on the magnificent Canadian National Memorial at Vimy Ridge to the north of Arras in France. His name was not included on the Hadleigh War Memorial. More details on all those lost can be found on the project website www.hadleighww1.com. (Research by Mark Brennan, Nigel Crisp, Jeff Ward)

Welcome to your Autumn Film Season! Friday 9th September at 7.30 pm

SING STREET (12) This is the second film by director John Carney and like his first film, ONCE, which we presented in February 2013, music is the key to SING STREET. Set in Dublin, the theme centres around Conor, a teenager from a posh but cash strapped family, who finds himself being sent to a rough inner city Catholic school in Dublin. This is a coming of age, crowd pleaser film with real depth, heart and wit. Conor’s talent blossoms as a singer songwriter with catchy songs that capture the mood of the 1980s.If you enjoyed seeing the first film from John Carney, then book a place in your diary for the second! We are confident you will enjoy being transported back to Dublin again. Friday 23rd September at 7.30 pm

GReAT WAR NeWs sePTeMBeR 2016 (as reported in the Suffolk and Essex Free Press of the day) Wed 13 Sept The relatives of nine men reported missing in the 1/5th Battalion Suffolk Regimenton the Gallipoli Peninsula, one year ago, in August 1915, have each received a letter from the Territorial Record Office. The men involved were Arthur Maskell, Harry Griggs, Alfred Lambert, Robert Lambert, William Dunnett, Charles Ward, George Willis, Bertie Emmerson and Herbert Chisnall. The letters state “It is my painful duty to inform you that no further news having been received relative to [this soldier] since 21.8.15 the Army Council have been regretfully constrained to conclude that he is dead and that his death took place on 21.8.15 or since”. [It is now known that the date of injury and probably death was 12 August 1915.]

Wed 20 Sept The relatives of Frank and Leonard Bloomfield received letters concluding their death at Gallipoli in 1915. Next Monday has been appointed as Flag Day on behalf of Suffolk Prisoners of War; the Committee has taken in hand the collection of funds for the purchase of food and clothing for our staving soldier prisoners in Germany. The object of the fund comes home very near to us as there are Hadleigh men among the number to be relieved. Also being sent are sets of chess and draughts, boxing gloves, footballs, mouth organs, shaving and hair cutting requisites, books of light and more serious literature, prayer books, etc. Wed 27 Sept After the air raid of last Saturday [of Zeppelins over Essex] it should not be necessary to warn householders in Hadleigh to effectively screen their lights at night, but some still disregard the orders and expose themselves and their neighbours to danger.

THE MAN WHO KNEW INFINITY (12) In complete contrast, on 23rd September we are presenting THE MAN WHO KNEW INFINITY. It stars Dev Patel as the real-life Srinivasa Ramanujan, a mathematician who after growing up poor in India, earned admittance to Cambridge University during World War I and as a result set the world's academia on fire with his maths abilities. Patel sees joy in equations and can crack impossible conundrums with a few jottings and as a result bonds with his eccentric tutor, played by Jeremy Irons. During both presentations we will be selling our ever popular refreshments – teas, coffee, fruit juice and choc ices – milk or plain. Admission to both films is £3.50 on the door (£2.50 for accompanied children

Refusal was recommended (Voting was unanimous) The reasons for recommending refusal were: 1) Special Landscape Area – Policy CRO4 which states the development will only be allowed if it harmonises with the area – these documents do not show this 2) Design is inappropriate – there are three storey houses which are on the high ground overlooking Hadleigh and are totally inappropriate in the setting and the Committee felt that even the two storey houses may be inappropriate given the rest of that estate are bungalows or chalet bungalows 3) Buffer zone – there were a number of residents at the meeting objecting to the application and many believe that when the estate was built there was a verbal agreement made between Babergh and the residents that this area would remain a buffer zone between the bypass and the estate 4) Utilities – there are worries that the sewage system in Hadleigh will not cope with the additional strain especially given it is on high ground. There may also be issues with the electricity supply as t is supplied via overhead cables to the estate 5) Environmental issues and increased pollution – the removal of the buffer zone trees will mean that there will be more pollution from traffic that will not be filtered 6) Loss of Trees – although these trees are not protected by TPO’s there are still a significant number of mature trees that will be lost 7) Prime archaeological site – a full archaeological survey will need to be carried out on this land prior to any building works District Councillor Dr Dawson was in attendance and stated that she will be calling in this application and the Committee would also state very strongly that this application should be called in to be decided by full Committee. Furthermore it is essential that a site visit takes place to enable District Councillors to explore the potential problems surrounding this application. B/16/00905/FHA Springfields, 3 Station Road, Exterior cladding, Refusal was recommended (Voting was 9 for; 1 against; 2 abstentions) The reason for recommending refusal was the use of synthetic material which is totally unsuitable on a dwelling that is situated within the Conservation Area The Committee noted the Officer Delegated Decisions made on the following applications: B/16/00683/LBC M.W. Partridge & Co. Ltd, Application for Listed Building Consent – Erection of Notice Board, Approval was recommended B/16/00884/ADV M.W. Partridge & Co. Ltd, Application for Advertisement Consent – erection of wall mounted Town Council notice board and information sign on side wall, Approval was recommended Additional Applications: B/16/00721/LBC Ahwatukee, 7 Stone Street, Application for Listed Building Consent – alterations and extensions including: erection of rear two storey & single-storey extensions, internal alterations to form utility, cloaks and WC and amendment to external rear garden levels. Approval was recommended (Voting was unanimous) B/16/00760/FUL Former Brett Works and 109 High Street, Change of use of outbuilding to a B1 commercial unit, demolition of existing buildings including partial demolition of 109 High Street refurbishment of 109 High Street to create a A1/A2 retail unit and a 2 bed apartment, erection of age restricted dwellings comprising 35 no. retirement apartments, 4 no. houses, 25no. bungalows, access,

car parking, open space, landscaping, footbridge and ancillary development. The Clerk was asked to request an extension of time to comment on this application at the next Planning Meeting due to the amount of information received. The Clerk was also requested to respond to the e.mail written by Kathryn Obelman of Babergh District Council. B/16/0014/TCA Greenways, 7 Bridge Street, Removal of laylandii hedge, 5 no. silver birch trees, 1 no. prunus tree, 1 no. aburnum tree, 1 no. Cyprus fir tree, 1 no. holly tree and group of ash young trees. This application was noted. TOWN AND COUNTRY PLANNING The Committee noted the Schedule of Decisions of the Local Planning Authority. NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN The Chair reported that there had been pop ups held in the Co-op and another due to be held in St. Mary’s Church where specific topics had been addressed. At the last meeting a draft layout of the plan had been developed. ANY OTHER RELEVANT BUSINESS The Clerk reported that Babergh District Council had refused the following applications: B/16/00452/LBC – 45-47 High Street and B/16/00451/FUL – 45-47 High Street, Part removal of curtilage listed wall and erection of wooden fence and gate (retention of) Also B/16/00592/FUL – The George, 52 High Street B/16/00593/LBC – The George, 52 High Street Erection of single-storey BBQ shed structure with 2 metre high chimney flue, linked to existing public house by covered walkway extension (retention of). As these were retention applications Hadleigh Town Council had noted both applications. Concerns were raised on the effect of the District Council’s decision on these businesses. The Clerk reported that Councillor Sheldrick had advised her of a commercial premises in Lady Lane now built and had concerns over the size of the building. Babergh District Council had advised that the work had been approved on the 5th February 2015 under application number B/15/00164 for a three storey light industrial unit/office building. Councillor Haylock brought to the attention of the Committee the brook in Benton Street which no-one looks after and is becoming more of a problem as more water comes down from the upper ground. The brook becomes blocked and overflows. Councillor Young advised that if there are concerns over flooding if Anglia Water and the Environment Agency are contacted they will work together to come up with a solution. Councillor Young asked if there was a planning course available for Councillors to be updated on changes in planning policy. She was advised that the journals forwarded by the office are the best way to keep up to date with planning law. There being no further business the meeting closed at 8.45pm. Mrs Carol A. Bailey BA(Hons) – Town Clerk

Coffee,Cake and Chat Please come along to St Andrew's on Mondays, 5th and 19th September 11 am - 12.30 pm. All welcome.

Letter www.layham.org from Layham Are you new to Layham? If you have just moved to the village and would like to know more about it, please visit our website www.layham.org, where you can download a Welcome Booklet. However, if you do not have a computer and printer and would prefer a hard copy of the booklet, please contact Jane Cryer, Parish Clerk, on 07920 713940.

Parish Council The main matters discussed at the Parish Council meeting of 27 July 2016 were: • Public Forum A parishioner who lived on Upper Street for some years said he continued to be concerned about motorists exceeding the speed limit – and, in particular, the recent spate of accidents. He asked about the possibility of vehicle activated signs (VAS) at both ends of the village. The Chairman said the PC was aware of speeding issues and was taking steps to try and address them. It had finally been agreed that a 40mph speed limit would be introduced between Layham and Hadleigh; the 30mph speed limit near the Marquis would also be extended. • District Council & County Council reports The main topic in both reports was the public consultation on the East Anglia Devolution Deal, which would run until 23 August; Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils were both keen to make as much information available as possible. A booklet had been produced and copies were available from the council offices, or could be downloaded from the local government websites. Cllr Ward said devolution would not lead to another tier of government as the current council Leaders would form the executive of the devolved authority. He confirmed that the government would prefer to have an elected mayor, although most districts were not in favour of this. In view of the tight deadline for responses, it was agreed that councillors would view the consultation online and respond to the Clerk with any comments as soon as possible. However, it was noted that individuals could also respond. With regard to fly tipping, there was concern that the new charges imposed at waste disposal sites could lead to more instances of fly tipping, and the new system could prove not to be cost effective. Cllr Jones said the situation would continue to be monitored. • Upper Layham phone box / defibrillator The internal fittings had now been removed from the phone box, and the electrician contacted. Painting the phone box would be organised by the working party. • SCC’s Countryside Access consultation The PC’s response to the consultation had been submitted online. It had specifically mentioned the narrow footpath in Benton Street, the possibility of a route for a new footpath between Layham and Hadleigh, and several footpaths where the path suddenly stopped. • Green Team A suggestion arising from the previous meeting had been the installation of gates from the playing field into the conservation area; however, the Playing Field Committee would be consulted about this and issues such as vehicle access – and cost - taken into account. It was agreed to try and recruit some non-parish council members to the Green Team. • Merchant Navy Day Seafarers UK (formerly King George’s Fund for Sailors) were keen to encourage as many organisations as possible to recognise the sacrifices made by seafarers and their families by flying the ‘Red Duster’ on Merchant Navy Day (3 September), and were supplying flags free of charge. It was agreed to obtain a flag and fly it from St Andrew’s church tower. Suffolk Historic Churches Bike Ride and Stride 9 am - 5.00 pm Saturday 10th September. Please contact Richard Groom (Tel 822220) if you are interested in cycling or walking to raise funds for historic churches. Layham Playing Field Those who use the playing field regularly will have noticed the installation of artificial grass matting in 8x4m carpets in front of the football goals. The area was first dug out to a depth of 5cm, surrounded with a wooden frame and then packed with fine stone and powder to create a firm, flat base. This was covered with the matting, which was then doused in several hundredweights of kiln dried sand to hold it firmly in place. Over time the sand will be washed to the base of the mat by natural rainfall. No longer will our footballers have to negotiate a puddle-filled dip in the ground in front of each goal. This project was made possible by the use of what is known as Section 106 money – a contribution made to Parish Council funds, via Babergh District Council, by developers of new buildings in Layham. The money has to be used to develop recreational facilities in the village. Two Problems Rabbits seem to like attacking the installation – we have to find a way to combat that. Boots with studs will eventually tear the artificial grass – so please ask your children to use trainers to play in the goalmouths. Unfortunately Alan cannot remember what the event was – can anyone else help? The ongoing quest for wedding photographs One of the History Group’s projects is to track-down as many photographs as possible of the marriages of couples who are entered in St Andrew’s Church Register of Marriages. So far 63 have been tracked down. The earliest is from 98 years ago - 1 June 1918 and is the marriage of Arthur Girling and Alice Crisp. The latest acquisition is from just a few weeks ago when, on 6 August 2016 Lisa Middleton married Paul Patchett. The reception was held in the Village Hall. Panto time is fast approaching The cast and crew of HADS are excited about presenting Aladdin in January 2017, and we would love you to be part of that. HADS has been highly successful since 1920 in bringing entertainment to your Hadleigh Community. As an amateur dramatics society we provide opportunities for all age groups to be part of a fun and dynamic experience! We want YOU to be part of the magic and help us make our wish come true to bring the Arabian city of Agrabah to Hadleigh. How can you do this? You can support us in lots of ways. It costs a significant sum of money to put on a production of four performances. We want to keep our ticket prices down so that a night out at the 'theatre' is affordable to everyone. Our last two pantos and our recent 'Murder Mystery' were sold out. But we need your help to keep the 'magic' going. We are looking for sponsors to help us achieve our goal. You can do this by pledging to sponsor all or part of a show, costumes, programmes, etc. If you would like to be part of our journey and help us bring live theatre to Hadleigh then contact us on 07907 853928 and speak with Mandy Vince

Recipe for Success by Sarah Thompson Oh it’s so nice to have friends! My kind friend Margaret gave me a Mrs Beeton cookery book, my friend Keith gave me some tasty allotment courgettes and my friend Clare and I spent a lovely afternoon baking. This recipe goes out to friends everywhere, a deliciously simple all in one cake that can be kept frozen for up to a month, though between you and me it is unlikely to last that long! Courgette Loaf Cake 2 large eggs, 125ml vegetable oil, 85g soft brown sugar 350g courgettes, coarsely grated, 1 tsp vanilla extract 300g plain flour, 2 tsp cinnamon, ¼ tsp nutmeg, ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda ½ tsp baking powder, 85g walnuts, roughly chopped or 85g pine nuts as alternative, 140g sultanas Method Heat oven to 180ᵒC/160ᵒC fan/gas. Butter and line a 2lb loaf tin with baking parchment. Generous greasing of the tin will do the trick though, so don’t worry if you don’t have any baking parchment to hand. In a large bowl, whisk the eggs, oil and sugar, then add the courgettes and vanilla. In another bowl, combine the remaining ingredients with a pinch of salt. Stir dry ingredients into the wet mixture, then pour into the tin. Bake for 1 hour, or until a skewer or knife inserted into the centre comes out clean. Leave to cool, then serve, or freeze for up to 1 month.

This year’s Club Championship was played on Saturday 23rd July. The Ladies have always maintained the tradition of the 36 hole medal examination to find their Club Champion so it was sixteen very brave competitors who set off at 8.30 am playing the Gainsborough course in the morning and the Constable course in the afternoon. The conditions were hot and sultry all day with barely a breeze but they all maintained a steady pace and took plenty of water so there were no casualties along the way! The very worthy winner was Tracey Dickens with gross scores of 81 in the morning and 91 in the afternoon, making a total of 172. The first nine of her morning round consisted of seven pars and two birdies. The runner-up Lady Captain Betty Cox was Pamela Randle, a past Champion who and Tracey Dickens returned to the competition after an absence of three years and came very close with rounds of 87 and 91, totalling 178. She was followed by Margaret Bentley only two shots back with two rounds of 90. The Bronze Division Shield went to first time winner, Elaine Davidson who had two great rounds of 102 and 107, total 209 narrowly beating Roz Clements by one shot – 101, 109, making 210. Handicap Prizes are also awarded and this year Jo Little took the honours with nett scores of 73 & 78, making 151, just beating Lesley Hitchcock who scored 76 & 78, totalling 154. Tea and the presentations took place immediately after play and a proud and relieved group of Ladies left for home promising to put themselves through the whole thing again next year! We Salute Them All.

English Girls Open Amateur Championships at The Nottinghamshire Golf Club Alice Barlow travelled to the Nottinghamshire golf club to compete in the English Girls Open Amateur championships and dug deep to hit her start of year goal of a top ten finish. With a strong field of Home Internationals she competed throughout the three days having a share of the lead after round 1. The tough Championship course at The Nottinghamshire comprises of a lot of trouble around every corner. Alice shot a -2 first round 71 the best round of her career so far to share the lead with Scotlands Alison Muirhead which included 3 birdies and a solitary bogey. The second round was a solid +3 round of 76. She made the cut for day three tied for 2nd place at +1. Going out in the penultimate group meant a well deserved lay in on the Thursday. Some rain and wind made conditions a little tricky but a chip in for a birdie on the first was a great start. A few errant tee shots lead to a few too many bogeys including a tee shot into the water at 16. Finishing +5 and +6 overall. The final round was kicked into life with a 20 foot birdie putt on 5 and a chip in from 30 yards on 7 for an Eagle to put her on -2 for the round. A bogey at 8 and a disappointing double bogey at 17 meant a birdie was required on 18 to get into the prize money, but the 10 foot putt lipped the hole for birdie. Never the less Alice said this was a great experience to be competing with these players and plans on doing more of it in the future. A great Tied 8th final position out of a field of 113.

Hadleigh Bowling Club What a climax to the 2016 outdoor season. While Team GB have been doing their bit in Rio our mixed pair of Diane Miller and Kyle Leeks were competing in the Suffolk County (BE) Mixed Pairs final which they won at a canter with a brilliant display of bowling which gave their opposition little opportunity to get a foot hold in the game. Our congratulations go to them. Kyle also won the Bowls Federation Area C Champion of Champions final and went on to the county finals where he eventually lost in the final. Kyle’s season was by no means over as on the weekend of the 13/14 August he was competing at Royal Leamington Spa in the National Finals of Bowls England under 18 Trophy. Out of an entry of 128 contestants Kyle won through 3 rounds to reach the round of 16 where he was narrowly beaten by Jack Glover of Gloucestershire in a well contested match. The eventual winner was Liam Harris who is another Suffolk lad. Well done Kyle you did yourself and our club proud. Thanks to his success in the Suffolk Bowling Federation Champion of Champions competition, Kyle is now off to Skegness to compete in the English Bowling Federation National Finals over the weekend of 20/21 August. We wish him well. On the domestic front our outdoor league season is almost over with generally positive results. The Monday BE Mixed Triples Team are through to the semifinal of the league play offs which take place at the Rookery in Stowmarket on Sunday 21 August. The Samford League Team (also Mondays) are in a relegation battle and need to win their last match to stay up. The Tuesday Federation 2 Wood Triples are promoted as champions. The Wednesday BE Triples finished 4th and the Federation Mixed 3 Wood Triples who also play on Wednesdays finished strongly and gained 2nd place which we are hoping will be sufficient to be promoted. Finally, the Thursday 2 Wood Federation Triples are currently 2nd and we are almost certain to be promoted. All the league positions are subject to confirmation. We had quite a bit of success in the cup competitions this year and we have reached the final of the Stan Wright Cup which we play at Westerfield against Bramford under the Federation code. The Outdoor Stone Street League has proved a very popular addition to our internal competitions and the teams contesting the final are captained by Tom Tebbett and David Cooper. Club Finals Day is on Saturday 10 September with our closing drive and hog C roast supper the following Saturday. As the all to short outdoor season comes to a close we are getting our indoor short mat campaign under way with our biggest yet number of players signing up which will keep the club busy over the winter months. If anyone is interested in having a go at short mat bowling we have informal roll ups every Tuesday and Thursday afternoons at 14.30 and on Sunday mornings at 10.00. If you would rather speak to someone first, our Indoor Secretary is Fred Creed who would be happy to answer your questions and he can be contacted on 01473 822482

Lewis Woodhead regains Jonathan Lambert Salver Last gasp winner Lewis Woodhead snatched the coveted Jonathan Lambert Centenary Silver Salver at Newton Green for the second time in three seasons. It looked as if 86-year-old golfer Neil Jacobs (handicap 27) would become the oldest winner of the trophy with his total of 41 Stableford points. But playing in the last three-ball - three hours later than Jacobs - in an entry of 120, Woodhead (7) got over the line with a score of 42. When he won the trophy for the first time, he was a junior, and he is the only player in ten years to have his name on the salver twice. Jacobs took the best male prize as he competed against some hot competition from the club’s junior players, with Harvey Watts also on 41 to become the best junior, and Adrienne Hughes was the best woman on 36. Watts had eased out 39-point Alice Barlow from the junior winner spot, but the field could not keep down the club’s outstanding female player of the season as she shot a gross 70 (one over par), which saw her reduce her own course record by a shot. She would have brought it down further had she not recorded a two over par five on the par three 18th. Barlow’s rival male course record holder Jed Seeley was also in fine form, with a three under par 65 giving him the Carole List award for the best gross score of the day. Jonathan Lambert presented awards at the Saturday night party of golf week, which again saw members competing in record numbers across 10 events in six days of golf aimed at showing off the inclusive nature of golf at its best. Prize winners: Jonathan Lambert Centenary Silver Salver: 42 points Lewis Woodhead, best male 41 Neil Jacobs, best woman 36 Adrienne Hughes, best junior 41 Harvey Watts. Carole List trophy for best gross score: 65 Jed Seeley. Delaney Scramble: 60.5 Gareth Evans, Sue Thurgate, Carolyn Cocksedge, Kevin Butler; 62.4 Steve Wordley, Linda Spurko, Adrienne Hughes, John Barry; 62.4 Tibby Mimpriss, Odette Ford, Nigel Gerrans, Paul Hughes. Stableford: 91 ocb Ben Tawell, Sue Lockwood, Mark Barlow, Roger Hermiston; 91 Alan Vince, Angela Chapman, Roger O’Brien-Hill, Alex Iveson; 89 George Bullett, Rebecca Evans, Lee Prentice, Alice Barlow. Best Whag, 40 Ben Tawell; woman, 36 Lynne Hart; male, 42 David Carse; junior 41 Alice Barlow. Kiskadee Trophy: 26 Sue Thurgate and Kevin Knights, 22 Angela Chapman and Dave Carse, 21 (ocb) Mick Mills and Lynne Hart. Points means prizes: 29 Jed Seeley, 26 Alex Iveson, 24 Paul Maclachlan. Three Clubs/Putter: Peter Cade, Alex Iveson and Rosemary Thomson. Points means prizes: Foxes and Rabbits: 39 Ollie and Tom Page, 41 Mark and Jenny Barlow, 42 Max Hemson and Georgina Thornton, 42 James and Alex Cooper, 43 Martin and Alison Brightwell. Putting: 17 Ian Page, 18 Ben Clarke. Par Three: 25 Mark Barlow, 23 Ollie Page, 21 Steve Knappett.

Hadleigh United Football Club Sponsored by Hadleigh Tyre Group www.hadleigh-utd.co.uk Hadleigh United’s new management pair of Stuart Alston and Andrew Crisp wish to thank the supporters for the loyalty shown to the club in the opening weeks of the campaign. Stuart and Andrew took over in the summer with a young team who are playing well and the pair are delighted with the following being given to them from the local and surrounding area. The team made a great start by gaining wins against youth sides from Colchester and Ipswich Town before winning the Hadleigh Charity Cup by beating Leiston. But an F.A. Cup match at Barkingside was lost in the last minute after an evenly balanced contest. A league match at Fakenham was narrowly lost but the league match against Kirkley was won at the Millfield with Brett Crisp scoring two splendid goals. The next game ended goalless at home to Haverhill with Dan Knight hitting the crossbar in the last minute. The Reserves had some difficult preseason matches against older opponents who play senior football. They will have started league matches by now in the Thurlow Nunn Reserves league under manager Andy Lambert. A great start was made by the Thurlow Nunn youth team with a four goal success at Walsham. The return took place at Hadleigh seven days later with Walsham proving better opposition than previously. The first half was level but Walsham got on top in the second half winning four goals to two. These lads play all of their matches mid-week. Prize winners in the latest monthly draw were Alan Dilloway and Paul Crawford. Ground Improvement winner was Lee Day. Both draws were made by Donna Ramsey at the Walsham match. Terry Adams Hadleigh United Fixtures Hadleigh begin Septembers fixtures on Saturday 3rd with a trip to Mildenhall. On Tuesday 6th Wivenhoe come to the Millfield while Debenham come to Hadleigh on Saturday 10th in the F.A Vase. Tuesday 13th means a seaside trip to Clacton before we entertain Thetford on Saturday 17th and travel to Brantham on Tuesday 20th in the league cup. Tuesday 27th means a journey to Haverhill to end a busy month. The Reserves entertain Diss on Saturday 3rd before going to Stowmarket for a local derby on Saturday 10th. A trip to Woodbridge follows on Saturday 17th while Stanway visit the Millfield to end the month on Saturday 24th. The Thurlow Nunn youth team go to Leiston on Wednesday 7th in the F.A Youth Cup. Another away match follows at Whitton on Thursday 15th before Framlingham pay us a visit on Wednesday 28th. Any additions or alterations will be on the club website.
