New Swimming Pool for Hadleigh Babergh District Council recently announced that £2.6million would be invested into a new swimming pool for Hadleigh. The new pool plans have been submitted and can be viewed online at the Babergh planning portal. The design team have addressed all of the points raised during public consultation and we are delighted to confirm that the pool will be 0.9metres deep at the shallow end increasing to 1.8metre at its deepest point. This will allow those learning to swim to also learn to dive. The new facility will also include a Changing Places Toilet. Research has found that over a quarter of a million severely disabled people, including those with profound and multiple learning disabilities do not have access to public toilet facilities that meet their needs. In the UK the number of people who would benefit from a Changing Places Toilet would include approximately: 230,000, whilst we do not have that many residents in the area we have a high level of older users and this facility will offer greater access to those with disability. A sauna has also been incorporated into the plans. If all goes to plan the work on the new pool will start in the New Year. and anticipated opening date for swimmers will be January 2020. Cllr Margaret Maybury, Cabinet Member for Communities at Babergh District Council said, “This project is an exciting development for Hadleigh and its surrounding district as a new pool has been a dream of many for a long time. Babergh are committed to enhancing wellbeing facilities for all ages and the new pool project promotes this. We have a long way to go; securing planning approval is the first step. I wish all at SSL every success in their endeavours and we at Babergh are behind them every step of the way.”. Cllr Peter Matthews, Mayor of Hadleigh Town Council said “This is indeed an exciting move forwards that will provide a much needed upgrade to the current facility, and ensure that our residents of all ages can use and enjoy the benefits of swimming for many more years to come.” For more information on South Suffolk Leisure, visit our website at www.ssleisure.co.uk

Prestigious National Award for Hadleigh Sir Cedric Morris Florilegium wins national Finnis Scott Foundation Botanical Art Award On Saturday 21 July, two hundred and fifty people, drawn from all over the United Kingdom, gathered at Boughton House, near Kettering, as the guests of the Finnis Scott Foundation. Leading representatives from the world of horticulture and all the organisations that the FSF has supported since its inception in 2008 were invited. The idea was that people working in the same fields – horticultural training, historic gardens, social care, community gardening, plant sciences, museums and galleries, and publications – could get together and share their knowledge and experiences. Boughton House belongs to the Duke of Buccleuch, K.T., who joined in the celebrations, and opened the house and gardens for guided tours. Prior to formal lunch in the garden, the prestigious Botanical Art Award was presented to Cllr Dr Sian Dawson from Hadleigh, a botanical illustrator who was inspired to undertake the project as a lasting legacy for the towns famous artist. She coordinated the project of botanical artists to illustrate a ‘Florilegium’ of the bearded irises, bred by Sir Cedric Morris. Morris (18891982) an artist, gardener and iris breeder, who developed the 'Benton End' bearded irises between 1933-1960, that now survive in the National Plant Collection, cultivated by Sarah Cook, the horticultural expert and former head gardener at Sissinghurst in Kent. The Sir Cedric Morris Florilegium consists of 27 botanical paintings that accurately record each of these cultivated varieties of iris, painted by the country's leading RHS botanical artists. When awarding the £10,000 prize, the Chairman of the Finnis Scott Foundation Trustees, Ian Barnett, congratulated this outstanding group of artists. “The judges thought the paintings were of a very high standard and liked the scope of the project and the connection with Hadleigh’s Sir Cedric Morris Iris collection and Gainsborough’s House." Dr Dawson has requested her legacy is gifted to the The Gainsborough Museum, who will retain this unique collection, considered the finest florilegium of iris paintings worldwide. It will be held in perpetuity alongside Gainsborough’s and Sir Cedric Morris’s private collections and be retained in the right climatic conditions and part of the collection will be available for public viewing next year in Hadleigh. The FSF Botanical Art Award is the most valuable award of its kind. It is ten years since the charitable trust, the Finnis Scott Foundation, was founded, to provide money for charitable ventures in the gardening and artistic spheres. Dr Dawson commented, ‘the collection has just been awarded a Silver Medal and been on display in the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh and to follow this up with the generosity and accolade of the Finish Scott Award is quite overwhelming. I am delighted to receive such a prestigious award, considered the highest accolade within this discipline on behalf of all the artists, who so graciously donated their paintings and trust that this will promote Hadleigh’s famous artist plantsman Sir Cedric Morris as this collection goes on exhibition overseas.

Concert in Elmsett Due to unforseen circumstances the concert on the 14th September between the Elmsett Fellowship Band and the Trinity Singers has had to be postponed.

Shearman’s Welcome Guests at the party in St Mary’s Church all agreed that celebrations were in order to toast the recent arrival of Shearman the sheep. This fine life-sized sculpture of a Suffolk Sheep has pride of place in St Mary’s churchyard majestically surrounded by ancient buildings which were financed by the woollen cloth trade. The artistic version was lovingly crafted in Lincolnshire by Ben of Ben Bramma Metal Sculptures. It was commissioned by the Hadleigh Legacy Group Trust as a fitting memory of the Hadleigh Year of the Sheep event in 2015. A generous donation from the Suffolk Unveiling Shearman the Sheep Society enabled the project to Sheep (L to R) proceed and include an interpretation Jane Snowdon, Mayor board which stands alongside Shearman. Cllr Peter Matthews, Hilary The Society was represented by Suffolk Matthews, Jane Haylock Sheep breeder, Chris Patridge and his wife, Sarah. Ben’s parents very kindly delivered the model on Ben’s behalf and builder, Steve Chisnall, carefully secured the structure into the ground. Mayor Councillor Peter Matthews with his wife Hilary present, ceremoniously unveiled the metal animal in front of an invited audience and passers-by. Guests, including representatives of the recently formed Wool Towns Association, repaired to St Mary’s to enjoy a glass of wine and a slice of celebratory cake made by Helen Golland of Angel Delights. The Legacy Group i.e. Jane Haylock, Jane Snowdon, Jim Wilding and Jan Devey took the opportunity to resurrect some of Close up of Shearman the sheep bunting, the Jim Lawrence the Sheep Ram and several crafted wall hangings from the original event to decorate the church. It was a most enjoyable way of welcoming this very special addition to Hadleigh’s historical landscape. So readers why not take time out to include St Mary’s Churchyard on your next visit to the centre of Hadleigh and view the new arrival? JD

Thank you to everyone who has sponsored me through Brave the Shave to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Care. To date we have raised around £1300 plus gift aid. A team of volunteers also held a coffee and cake morning at Hadleigh Health Centre on the morning of the shave and they raised around £200. It is not too late to sponsor me if you would like to by searching for Caroline Ursell on www.bravetheshave.macmillan.org.uk website. The shave itself was live streamed from the salon so if anyone would like to see it happen then look for James Daniel on facebook. As promised here is my "after" photo from the day of the shave. The morning routine is certainly quicker with short hair!

Chris Lee – one of 12 Best Game Chefs at the Eat Game Awards 2018 The Bildeston Crown’s Chris Lee is in the running for the award for “Best Chef Regularly Cooking Game” in the 2018 Eat Game Awards but to take home the prize, he needs your vote. The shortlist of the top 12 has already been determined by the online voting system but voting now begins again to determine the overall winner. Chris is up against some very impressive company in the Chef category – Tom Kitchin, Fergus Henderson, Tom Aitkens, Phil Howard and Richard Corrigan to name just five – so if you want Chris to win, vote for him on the Eat Game website https://eatgameawards.co.uk/voting/ before the end of September. You do not need to vote in every category and you can vote for up to three for each award. The criteria for nomination was that the chef must serve a variety of game in season and actively promote game dishes. Chris started shooting game as soon as he moved to Suffolk in 2004 and since then, game has been on the menu throughout the season with regular Game Wine Dinners. The inn has also been a popular place to stay for local shooting parties. So not surprisingly, game is a featured recipe for Chris in the recently published Suffolk Feast cookbook and to prove this is not a new favourite, it was a game dish, wild mallard, that Chris cooked to beat Simon King and Dave Myers on “The Hairy Bikers’ Tour of Britain” back in 2009. The Eat Game Awards is a new initiative aimed at recognising and helping to develop game as a vibrant and modern addition to the British menu, as well as encouraging the British public to discover and embrace this valuable food source. The Awards identify and celebrate the innovators, creators and revolutionaries in the world of wild game. If you think Chris Lee should be recognised for his passion for game, vote for him at https://eatgameawards.co.uk/voting/.

Hot-smoked partridge it doesn't get easier than this! The partridge season starts on 1 September and birds will be widely available in game dealers and good supermarkets from September onwards; prices for dressed birds vary and they are typically sourced from a small number of shoots, so it's wise to shop around. Birds in feather are worth a great deal less but you don't know what you're getting until they are plucked. They are not big birds but there is a surprising amount of meat on them; one bird is plenty for one & adequate for two with some veg. Essential equipment 1. A covered gas or charcoal fired BBQ with a temperature gauge or a purpose made hot/cold smoker. 2. A stainless steel container for your wood chips Ingredients A brace of dressed partridges 1 Level Teaspoon Standard (not extra-virgin) olive oil A pinch of Sea salt 1 small Lemon 4 normal size Bay leaves (ideally fresh but dried works OK) Oak or ash (hickory) wood chips, amount depends upon your smoke generator 1. There is an old school that promotes the hanging of game birds for a number of weeks. Don't go there; game treated in this way develops a really strong flavour that the old school describes as gamey; a more accurate description is a nasty acrid taste. They have to be hung for a day or two to enable them to be plucked without tearing the skin; dressed at that time and eaten fresh they are optimum. 2. Pre-heat the BBQ/smoker to 140ÂşC; if using a gas BBQ, light the burners on the side opposite that where the birds will stand. 3. Place the wood chips in the container and add a small (125ml) glass of water; place the lid, shake & allow to infuse for 5min. Drain off excess water & replace the lid. 4. Allow the birds to come to room temperature at the surface; dry with kitchen paper & rub the whole bird with olive oil - you can use a brush, but fingers work just as well. 5. Immediately rub the birds lightly with the salt; place in a lidded container to protect from insect pests for 10 minutes; the salt serves to make the skin more porous and enhance smoke penetration. 6. Quarter the lemon lengthwise and insert two quarters into the cavity of the bird together with two bay leaves. 7. Place the wood chip container directly onto the heat source (charcoal) or immediately above it (gas). 8. Cook at 130-150ÂşC for 30-40 minutes and apply the skewer test every 5 min from 25 min onwards; when the thickest part of the bird is pierced with a skewer, and the juices that run out are clear, the bird is cooked. 9. Cover with foil and allow to rest for around 10 minutes. To serve The old school will tell you to serve them whole on a slice of toast; dealing with it this way is a bit of a rigmarole on the plate. Serve them with sautĂŠ potatoes and French beans or fresh peas; one per person with a small amount of veg; half with plenty of veg.

Hadleigh Physiotherapy introduces The MummyMOT… Helen Forth, our Pelvic and Women’s Health Specialist is delighted to be offering The MummyMOT® in Hadleigh. This is a must-do for all women who have ever given birth, ideally carried out from around 6 weeks postnatal, but beyond that too. It includes a 1hr and 15 min assessment of your posture and biomechanics, pelvic floor and abdominal muscles, and will help you on your path to recovery and back to physical exercise. It can also highlight any areas where further in-depth physiotherapy assessment and treatment is indicated. To avoid any long-term childbirth related complaints, it is advised to come early and get your tummy gap and pelvic floor tested – then start an optimal postnatal recovery programme. In France this is considered standard postnatal care, but sadly it is still not offered routinely in the UK. Most women after having had a baby, will have weakness in either their tummy or pelvic floor muscles (or both!), which can lead to poor core strength. The in turn can result in back pain, pelvic pain, vaginal prolapse, and bladder or bowel control issues. The MummyMOT® is a detailed physiotherapy assessment of the abdominal and pelvic area. It will check your posture, breathing, tummy gap and pelvic floor strength. You will receive a report of the findings on the day, plus an appropriate safe exercise programme will be prescribed. The MummyMOT® System combines the principles of Physiotherapy assessment with the practice of functional retraining. It is essential to address muscle weakness and imbalance, otherwise pain, prolapse, and continence issues can persist. Mums need to be able to bend, lift, squat, and twist safely, comfortably and without leakage, in order to care for their small children. The Mummy MOT exercises reflect the needs of your body at this unique time. Helen will also be running a Bumps & Babies Pilates class starting on the 20th of September for 5 weeks so express your interest now as this is sure to fill quickly. For further details or to book please call the practice on 01473 810185

Are You Wearing The Wrong Bra Size? Research has shown that 80-85% of women wear a bra that doesn’t fit. Signs included underwire that presses into the breast tissue so if the wire is digging in it’s because you’re wearing the wrong size. If the bra is riding up the back this means you are wearing it too big. Neck, shoulder or arm pain can also be a sign that you are wearing the wrong size for your shape because the weight of breast tissue is heavy and most women don’t realise. Are you overflowing the sides of your bra? You will need a larger cup size. Labels to Love will be holding their Autumn Bra Fitting event on Monday 1th September, opening from 9.30am to 7.00pm. Come and have a free Bra Fitting and also take advantage of the 15% discount available on bras purchased or ordered and paid for on the day. Terry Adams It is with great sadness that I write this tribute to Terry Adams who died on 29th June 2018 age 78. His funeral took place in Ipswich on 25th July 2018. Terry was introduced to Hadleigh United in 1991 by local Hadleigh man Dick Skinner when Terry agreed to take up the role of Hadleigh United’s Press Officer. For the last 10 years Terry was proud to be our Club’s President. Terry was a decent sportsman in his time. He played cricket and kept goal for, among others, Woodbridge Town. Terry rarely failed during 27 years of voluntary service to Hadleigh United to meet a reporting deadline even after he became ill two years ago and was unable to get to our matches. He continued to gather in all the news and write up match reports and phone them into the newspapers from his home. At Terry’s funeral I read tributes sent in from several local current and former Sports Editors and Sports Journalists who knew Terry well. I would like to thank to Mike Bacon, Tony Garnet and Elvin King from the East Anglian Daily Times, Green Un and Ipswich Star, and Russell Claydon and Ken Watkins of the Suffolk Free Press, for their kind words and memories of Terry. Terry’s ability to recall detailed facts on past matches was incredible and we can remember some great days out with Terry on the coach on an away trip, particularly to Cup games when Terry would amaze us by telling us in detail about match incidents, the scores, the names of players etc for matches that had taken place many years previous. I learned recently from Terry’s relatives that they found at his house, a small library of scrap books containing press cuttings of Terry’s articles going right back to the 1980’s. I suspect this was Terry’s way of not just preserving his reports but also checking there were no inaccuracies in them. Terry was a stickler for accuracy and if there were any mistakes you can be sure he would be straight on the phone to admonish the guilty party. On Hadleigh match days Terry used his own version of short hand for recording the action highlights. He would scribble down the details of the times of goals scored and players names, that would be mixed up with a series of short codes, for example ‘Corner from the Right’ might be scribbled as CR. All this was entered in a pocket size notebook that no one other than Terry could decipher, but you could be sure by the following day Terry will have faxed over a fully expanded, word perfect hand written match report ready for copy typing and publishing on our Web Site. He would also produce separate reports for the local papers that he would dictate over the phone to the various sports desks. Once a month using his ‘Nom de Plume’ of ‘Brettsider’ Terry would also hand write and either hand deliver or post his notes to the Hadleigh Community News and once again he never missed their deadlines. Terry never drove a car and he always took public buses to get from Ipswich to Hadleigh’s home matches and we could expect him to be one of the first people to arrive at the ground ready for a coffee and some biscuits in our Hospitality Lounge. Come half time Terry would be one of the first people back in Hospitality ready to tuck into some food and cake, and this was after he had already stopped off earlier in Ipswich to have a breakfast before getting on the Bus to Hadleigh. Terry loved his food. In November last year the Club named our Hospitality Area the Terry Adams Suite as our lasting tribute to a man who has dedicated so much of his life in the last 27 years to Hadleigh United FC. Terry will be greatly missed. The Club is openly seeking to appoint a new Press Officer. Anyone interested should contact Rolf Beggerow Mob 07904 069691 Email RFBeggerow@aol.com Rolf Beggerow, Chairman Hadleigh United FC

Hadleigh Healing Society We shall be marking the hundredth anniversary of the ending of the first world war and it has made some us reflect on the misery, carnage and destruction caused by war. So many young men perished on both sides in the fields of France and Belgium. The poppy a symbol of that sacrifice, every family in the country was affected. Today there are still conflicts raging across the world, shall we ever see peace in every land, unfortunately not while there is greed and religious differences. If you feel affected by any of these thoughts and would like someone to talk to telephone 01473 823282 (answer machine) or log onto www.hadleighhealingsociety.org for an appointment with one our qualified registered healers. On Saturday, 29th September we are having another Clairvoyant Day. It is an opportunity to have a 20 minute private reading with a medium for ÂŁ15. If you would like a reading, book early by telephone 01473 823282 (answer machine) leaving a contact name and telephone number or log onto www.hadleighhealingsociety.org.

Hadleigh Community Choir The theme of the Hadleigh Community Choir’s Summer concert “The Rhythm of Life” was nature in its many forms and the choir chose the Suffolk Wildlife Trust as their charity for the concert. The choir always sponsors a charity at their main concerts and donates a proportion of the profits to that charity, this time it was the Suffolk Wildlife Trust. Following a very enjoyable and successful concert, Simone Bullion on behalf of the Suffolk Wildlife Trust was delighted to receive a cheque for £250 presented on behalf of the Hadleigh Community Choir by Stella Scanlon and John Turnbull. Suffolk Wildlife Trust is part of a UK-wide network of Wildlife Trusts. It is the only charity dedicated wholly to safeguarding Suffolk's wildlife and countryside. Simone said “I am delighted to receive this cheque as it is through donations like this that enables the Suffolk Wildlife Trust to continue its valuable conservation work in Suffolk”. The Trust has led local nature conservation efforts in Suffolk for five decades and has saved some of the county's most important wildlife sites as nature reserves. In the past eight years the Trust has spent over £7 million buying land for wildlife and currently cares for nearly 8000 acres of some of Suffolk's most inspiring wild places. Their nature reserves are open to enjoy whenever you wish, there is no charge - instead they ask you to help look after them by becoming a member. The Hadleigh Community Choir will begin rehearsals on the 6th September at the United Reformed Church and new members are always welcome. The choir is a friendly and welcoming choir and no audition is necessary. This Autumn, the choir is taking part in the Hate Crime Vigil at Bury St Edmunds Cathedral on Monday 15th October at 6:30pm and is also part of the Hadleigh Festival of Remembrance on Saturday 10th November at the United Reformed Church. The choir will end the year with a Christmas Concert on the 8th December, once again in the United Reformed Church. More than 2,200 standard bearers and wreath layers paid tribute to the fallen Members of the Hadleigh & District Branch of The Royal British Legion joined thousands of Armed Forces veterans and supporters from across the UK in a pilgrimage of remembrance to some of WW1’s most poignant sites. A spectacular two-mile march through Ypres to the Commonwealth War Grave Commission’s Menin Gate Memorial, led by 1,100 Standard Bearers, was the culmination of the three day event which saw the 2,200 participants visit the WW1 trenches, battlefields and cemeteries of France and Belgium. Len Davis and Colin Brown attended the Great Pilgrimage 90 as representatives of Hadleigh & District, as a Standard Bearer and wreath layer respectively. Mark Brennan, Chairman of the Hadleigh & District Branch along with Mark Price the vicechairman and their families who also attended the event said “Being part of such an historic event, representing Hadleigh in commemorating those that lost their lives in the First World War, was an honour and something I will never forget. GP90 was the Legion’s biggest membership event in modern history and is a suitable tribute from the members of The Royal British Legion in honour of the First World War generation, echoing the way the British Legion community commemorated the 10th anniversary of the conflict in 1928.

Hadleigh Walkers Our September walk on Saturday 8th will again be a circular walk from Hadleigh and will follow a route via the Railway Walk, Pond Hall business Park, Cobbold’s Fm, Ram’s Fm, Old Hall, Old House, Aldham Hall, Batt Hall and back to Hadleigh. The walk distance is about 8 miles in total. As usual, we will meet as St Mary’s School car park at 0930 and we should be back in Hadleigh around 1300. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy or rough in places at any time of the year. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site. Also in September, we will run a second walk on Saturday 29th which will be a circular walk round Mersea Island. We have booked the Hadleigh community bus for this trip and will be limited to 14 or 16. Cost of the walk will depend on exact numbers but is unlikely to be more than £8 per head. The walk is around 13 miles and anyone wishing to go should contact me, Gerie or Hugh and pay a non-returnable deposit of £5 to secure their place. We are still working on the route for our October walk but provisionally we are planning a circular walk from Shotley taking in the rivers Orwell and Stour. I’m not aware that we have done this walk with this group before so it will make a pleasant change. For further information about these walks go to www.hadleighwalkers.com, email us at hadleighwalkers@gmail.com or contact Mike Keeling on 01787 210104 or 0785 895 5678

Consistency - Stick With It What an amazing summer we’ve had (mostly) but once again it’s flown by and a new school year begins. Many people see September as a new beginning, more so than January as the days are still warm and long enough to motivate us. We get back into a good routine & maybe decide to lose weight & get fit after all the BBQs & summer punch! To be truly successful we need to make some changes ...and stick to them. Consistency is every bit as important as willpower. Willpower is a thought process, but consistency is what makes it happen – lasting change will follow an actual change in behaviour, repeated over & over again till it becomes your normal. Then your thoughts will adjust accordingly, and you’ll have made a new habit! If you want to lose weight and done your own thing or tried slimming clubs in the past but found it hard going, why not try a proven plan which takes out all the hard work (meal planning, calorie counting etc). Cambridge Weight Plan was initially researched and formulated by doctors (34 years ago) who needed to find a way for obese hospital patients to lose weight quickly & safely enabling them to have the surgery they needed. It’s a meal replacement plan which can be tailored to individual needs, either by replacing food completely or by using one of the with-food steps. All the guess work is taken away and you know you are getting complete nutrition when followed correctly. The biggest decision you need to make is which product or flavour to have!! Research has proven that slimmers are more successful with support. Average weight loss is a *stone a month. Accredited Cambridge Weight Plan Consultant Val Lord has over 9 years’ experience so, for one-to-one help with your weight problem, contact her today on 01449 737113/07519 177645 or www.facebook.com/val.lord.cwp. For more information, go to www.cambridgeweightplan.com/valL *the rate of weight loss may vary according to the individual. You will gain much more than you lose..!

Suffolk Bereavement Support – letting go is a difficult concept for anyone experiencing the loss of a loved one The concept of letting go is often a tricky one for those who have lost a loved one. It’s something that is easily misconstrued as forgetting about the person concerned but this couldn’t be further from the truth. It’s really more about accepting what has happened, but acknowledging at the same time that love never dies, and therefore remains unchanged after death. In our groups we try to give our members the understanding that over time they can reach the point where the memory of a loved one can be treasured without such an intense focus on what has been lost. If this blog is meaningful for you in connection with a bereavement, be it recent or further back in time then why not come and join a Suffolk Bereavement Support group? We are here to help! Our afternoon group is held in central Hadleigh on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month from 1.30pm-3.00pm and our Capel St. Mary group meets in the early evening on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month from 6.30pm-8.00pm. Each meeting finishes with refreshments and informal chat. We would love to hear from you if you would like to join us at any time. Please ring Margaret or Patrick: 01206 299832; email: sbsg246@gmail.com; web site: www.suffolkbereavement.org.uk

Fidelis Activity News Pauline Baker’s talk entitled Frock Horror gave us a brief insight into her varied career as a wardrobe mistress with the Royal Ballet at Covent Garden and then working freelance on various familiar BBC programmes and films plus dressing puppets. Sadly, our guided tour ‘Miss Lawrence Goes Shopping’ with Blue Badge guide, Jane Snowdon, had to be postponed due to the excessively hot weather although, in reality, rain would have stopped play. Ian Balham was our well informed but entertaining guide on a recent visit to East Bergholt. As is so often the case, we know more about places further afield than those close by. This was certainly true of Constable’s birthplace. A most informative tour with plenty of amusing anecdotes to accompany more serious facts. After all that social history, the ladies made their way to the nearby tea room, Oranges and Lemons for a welcome cuppa, light refreshments and a browse round their shop.

This certiďŹ cate is funded by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) for the purpose of assisting James Cartlidge MP in the performance of his Parliamentary duties. Printed by Keith Avis, 68 High St, Hadleigh, Ipswich IP7 5EF.

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk “Once again the issue of business rates, and the future of our high street, has come to the fore in local and national politics over the summer. High profile retailers have hovered on the brink of extinction (e.g. House of Fraser); locally, we have seen the closure of post offices and bank branches, most notably Barclays in Hadleigh. And yet, at the same time we have heard that the globe’s Godzilla retailer, Amazon, saw its corporation tax bill fall from ÂŁ7.2m in 2016 to just ÂŁ4.6m last year despite its operating profit trebling to nearly ÂŁ80m. Of course, mentioning Amazon highlights perhaps the most significant factor in the changing shape of our high streets: the rise of internet shopping. In November 2007 just 4% of UK retail sales were online, yet a decade later, this figure reached a peak of nearly 20%. It’s therefore easy to understand why ‘traditional’ retailers, i.e. those with a public facing premises, should feel frustration at paying out business rates – that can appear to bear no relation to turnover or profitability – when major online businesses worth billions pay comparatively little. I have huge sympathy with this view. Yes, the digital age has brought massive benefits as well as challenges, and we should not legislate to unwind technology that cannot be unwound. And let us not forget that for every struggling shop will be many more online firms created in bedrooms or trading with one or two staff working on a shoestring to build a new business that, if successful, will create further wealth and employment. Nevertheless, I was delighted when the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Philip Hammond, announced earlier in August that he was considering a so called ‘Amazon’ tax. He specifically said: “we want to ensure that taxation is fair between businesses doing business the traditional way and those doing business onlineâ€?. I share that sentiment of fairness – with one further caveat. We can implement all the tax changes on earth, and complain whenever premises become vacant, but our pubs and high street shops will only stay open if you and I actually use them.â€?

Art Club Activities The Hadleigh Art Club resume meetings now the long hot summer is over. The first meeting of the autumn session is on September 11th and the theme is ‘Cups, saucers and tea or coffee pot’. The following meeting September 18th; ‘Clothing draped on a chair’. One of the most successful afternoons of recent years was dedicated to painting on stones and it has been decided that we should repeat that exercise on September 25th. The Art Club is always ready to welcome new members to join our small, friendly group. The Club meets on Tuesday afternoons at 2 o’clock in the Hadleigh Library Seminar Room, we have break for tea and the session ends at 4pm.

Sing Out Saturdays are back after the summer break It’s been an amazing summer this year, even if it has been a little too hot and dry at times. The good news is that autumn is on its way, a season of cool mists and fruitful mellowness. It’s a time of change when many people think of taking up a new hobby. Have you ever considered harmony singing as part of a group? Maybe you've never tried singing before, or perhaps you've been meaning to do more of it. In either case, choirmaster Chris Rowbury is here to help. Chris believes that everyone can sing (yes, even you!). With his gentle encouragement and finely honed teaching skills, you may find yourself with a new hobby and some new friends. Chris holds a Sing Out Saturday in Hadleigh every third Saturday of the month. The next one is on Saturday 15th September at the Ansell Community Centre, Market Place, Hadleigh IP7 5DL. The singing starts at 10.30am (doors open 10.15am) and runs until 1pm with refreshments provided – all for just £8 per person. Sessions are open to all: men and women, experienced singers and complete beginners alike. No musical experience is necessary, there are no auditions or solos, and no sheet music. Chris will soon have you singing in beautiful harmony even if you think you can’t ‘sing’. Everyone is welcome and no experience is necessary as all songs are taught by ear. All sessions are self-contained with new songs and different people each month. No commitment is required, just come to which ever Saturdays are convenient. Since Sing Out Saturdays started in January 2016 they've tackled a wide range of songs. You can hear some on their website: www.singoutsaturdays.co.uk which also has all forthcoming dates and directions to the venue. Chris Rowbury is based in Woodbridge. He has 30 years' experience as a patient, charismatic teacher with a relaxed style laced with plenty of humour. He will get you singing in wonderful harmony in a matter of minutes. Find out more at www.SingOutSaturdays.co.uk or email chris@singoutsaturdays.co.uk or phone Chris on 01394 610 486

Long-serving employee Richard Rowe is celebrating 30 years at Ipswich-based home improvement firm SEH BAC – and in that time he has seen the award-winning company grow from humble beginnings into one of the UK’s top installers. The keen golfer and lifelong DIYer, who is currently a Technical Manager in the Conservatory Department, joined SEH Windows and Doors Ltd, as the company was then known, as a window and door surveyor in 1988. Richard explained: “After joining, I soon progressed to Installation Manager, before I was promoted to Operations Manager. I then decided on a career change in 2005 and became Technical Manager responsible for IT, HR, Investors in People and Health and Safety. “When the financial crisis hit in 2008 I changed back to a conservatory surveyor. Then, after a couple of years, this changed again to Technical Manager in charge of conservatories and now I work part-time and fill in the gaps in the technical department for conservatories.” While Richard has had a varied career at SEH BAC, he has also seen firsthand how the company has grown over the decades. Richard explained: “From starting in small premises in Woodbridge Road, Ipswich, to now having 15 high-class show centres across the whole of the South East of England, the company has always grown and expanded steadily over the years and put quality of work as the main goal. We know that customers are very willing to pay just that bit more for this service.” And with 30 years behind him, Richard is also perfectly placed to assess the changes in the industry: “The core window replacement industry has not changed too much over the years except that legislation has greatly increased and products have got more sophisticated. One major new product that has been introduced is the Bi-fold door and this has brought about a great deal of extra contracts, often involving large lintel works. “The conservatory market, however, has enjoyed a massive change and has evolved from simple glazed boxes on the rear of houses, into impressive permanent structures that are more in line with traditional extensions. Structural steelwork has increased within the fabric of the structures enabling modern buildings to be designed with orangery type glazed roof lanterns to be added.” When not working, Richard has his hands full all year round trying to keep his five grandchildren and four grandchildren inherited from his two daughter’s partners in check. But, he has managed to keep a work/life balance over the past 30 years and has thoroughly enjoyed working at SEH BAC. “SEH BAC has a very relaxed attitude to work within the office area but a very professional and caring attitude is given to all customers. Our directors have invested in critical software programs that, in the main, really work and assist work practices. Staff are generally left to work out the best solutions with just final direction taken by senior personnel.” For more information, call 0808 159 6310 or visit www.sehbac.com The Milden Singers Present

The Navy in World War 1 A Lecture by Mark Mitchels Commemorating the end of World War 1 Raydon Village Hall, Saturday 3rd November at 3.00pm We have heard a great deal about the ghastliness of World War 1 particularly in the trenches - The Somme, Ypres, Passchendaele, - and fateful assaults like Gallipoli. What we know very little about is the influence the Royal Navy had on the war. We know it kept us safe from possible invasion, kept the German fleet at bay, ensured the supply of vital materials - but what was it like for the sailors? Several decks below in extreme heat, although those on deck will have been exposed to severe cold from time to time. And only the most primitive air-conditioning, so the atmosphere must have been stifling. What of food? Perhaps not as primitive as Medieval times with ships biscuits and weevils, but probably doubtful refrigeration. How long where they at sea and where? Did they get any support from our Allies or was it a lonely responsibility? To learn more and acknowledge once again the debt the country owes to the Senior Service come to Raydon Village Hall on Saturday 3rd November to hear Mark Mitchels reveal more of the activities of The Royal Navy in WW1. Tickets ÂŁ7.50, including Afternoon Tea from 01473 310320

T TIME TIM IME M ME E

News from The Station On Tuesday 17th July all PCSO’s in Suffolk attended a meeting at Headquarters to hear the news that we had all feared. It had been decided that PCSO’s in their current format would no longer be part of the Policing family in Suffolk. 89 PCSO’s would be reduced down to 49. PCSO’s will focus on intervention and problem solving. 27 PCSO’s will remain in SNT (Safer Neighbourhood Teams), they will however focus on mental health, children and young people, and anti-social behaviour. 3 PCSO’s will be solely for schools throughout Suffolk and there are plans for 18 match funded PCSO’s to work specifically within a community. The proposed changes recognises the challenges being faced from county line drug dealing, youth gang violence and “hidden crime such as domestic violence affecting the most vulnerable in our communities. The training, capability and powers of a police constable will be more effective in meeting the challenges faced daily. 9 Community Engagement Police Officers were introduced to work within SNT’s. These officers will provide timely and relevant information and support, and develop volunteering schemes in the community. They will be involved in public events, crime prevention, digital engagement and local crime and antisocial behaviour. What This Means There will be 3 PCSO’s based in Ipswich, but they will cover the Hadleigh SNT area and Ipswich West area. These PCSO’s will be responsible for the above more specialised roles, so may not be dealing with as many varied jobs on a daily basis as we currently do deal with. As far as Hadleigh SNT is concerned, 5 PCSO’s will no longer be working at Hadleigh. We don’t just cover Hadleigh but 49 other rural villages primarily around the Babergh area. These smaller communities will also not see a visible presence on a daily basis from a PCSO. From a personal level I would just like to say that the 8 years I have worked in Hadleigh have been very rewarding. Having been born, grown up, married and raised my children in Hadleigh, it has been a privilege to Police it. I take pride in all the things I have been able to achieve, the people I have met and helped, the youths that I have dealt with over the years who have now grown up to have families and careers. I enjoyed meeting lots of people through all walks of life and I will miss that interaction. Potentially, I may not be working for Suffolk Police by the time that you read this article, so would please ask that if you have any problems, issues, want to report lost keys or wallets, complain about a vehicle parked, no tax etc, you have found a bike, and you want to report any kind of anti-social behaviour, you PLEASE don’t contact me directly, personally by text/facebook/phone, that you direct your enquiry through the normal channels ie 999 for an emergency or 101 for non-emergency. I will still continue to live and shop and probably socialise a bit more in the town so won’t be a complete stranger. Thank you all once again for reading my article every month for the last 5 years, but sadly this will be my last. I have enjoyed doing them albeit it is often hard to find new subjects to talk about. I would also like to thank Kelvin and all at HCN for allowing me to put my article in their magazine. Please continue to contact Suffolk Police on usual numbers 999/101 So, for the last time PCSO 3173 Julia Bignell

I would like to thank Julia for supplying HCN with a Police Report each month for many years, it will be greatly missed as indeed will her and her colleagues presence in Hadleigh and the surrounding villages. Will this mean the Police presence is even less visible in our Communities? I strongly suspect so. Kelvin Avis

This will be a once in a lifetime opportunity for me and the other members of my team. We will be trekking through the dense jungle to reach rural villages where we will spend time with the local people to help build school rooms and try communicating with the children. We are to be responsible for arranging our own campsites and hostels as we go. At the end of the challenge we will get free time to do more leisurely activities such as snorkelling, over 3 or 4 days. In order to raise this money I am prepared to do babysitting, dog walking and car washing. I am also selling hand made cards for any occasion (to request), knitted Christmas and wedding items as well as hand painted plates. I have also completed 2 car boots. For more details on craft items or Belize please email me: maisiebuttonbelize@gmail.com

What clever animals the ponies and horses at The Shelley centre are! Weeks and weeks without rain meant microscopic growth of the grass, but they kept on looking fit and healthy, ignoring the flies, and just carrying on with life like the troopers they are! Well done you lot, and well done the team that kept an eye on you during the hottest weather. The start of the school year is always quite exciting here, we shall be welcoming new riders from their schools as well as our ‘old’ regulars. People will be amazed to see the new colour of our arena with its golden surface, a very jolly topping on the old worn one. The Centre has been polished and cleaned, spiders moved, pigeons shooed away and rabbits sworn at. The tack is clean and supple; the herd is ready for action. Here is an archive photo of me being spring cleaned last year, when I was still a tall horse! Its amazing how much rubbish we accumulate over a year and the volunteers have been tidying up all the nooks and crannies for the start of the school year. Readers, if you would like to sponsor a live pony, there is a link on our website that makes the whole process very easy. My Aunty Di runs the Sponsor A Pony scheme, and the herd much appreciates the support it gets from wellwishers. Babs and I don’t feature on her list of candidates as we are not so cuddly, but we share the workload here, and support the live herd in its therapeutic work. Our next fundraiser is the Quiz night on 29th September at 7.00pm in Polstead Village Hall. See our green poster, or visit the website for more information. Above the Parapet County Council Report - Cllr Mick Fraser Changes Affecting Home to School and Post-16 Travel: In April’s HCN I wrote to inform you of proposed changes to the way Suffolk County Council (SCC) funds its to school and post-16 travel policy. One proposal was SCC should adopt the minimum legal requirement set by Government which, although wouldn’t have affected our primary and Hadleigh High schoolchildren, would have meant the end of funding to subsidise Post-16 travel. This was an issue that I believed would cause great hardship for many parents and carers in Hadleigh who have to send their 16-19 year olds to Ipswich, Colchester and elsewhere for further education. They could well have seen the annual travel cost per child rise by over £300 and, as such, I campaigned hard within the Conservative Group of councillors at SCC to retain the current subsidy. I also took this issue personally to Cllr Gordon Jones, Cabinet Member for Children Services and Education, appealing that Hadleigh was a special case that required focused consideration to retain this funding. I am now delighted to report that I was listened to and after due consideration, Suffolk County Council’s Cabinet agreed the recommendations to introduce a phased change to its school travel policies and will retain its current Post-16 Travel policy. The planned cost savings that had been identified will now be found from other parts of the overall SCC budget. After a well-needed summer break, I will resume holding my monthly surgery will be on the third Saturday of the month in the Sharron Elliott room of the Royal British Legion Club, George St. The next one will be on 15th September, 11am – 12pm. Hadleigh has welcomed a few well-known visitors, but not too many have had as many newspaper headlines as Lord Tebbit. And now we have the opportunity to ask him questions about his life and politics. Lord Tebbit will visit Hadleigh for an informal interview on Friday, 21st September, 2018. He has said that he will also answer questions, so it will be an interesting evening. Norman Tebbit was an MP from 1970 – 1991, having served as a BOAC pilot/navigator before that. He held many offices while an MP, including Parliamentary-under-Secretary of State for Trade 1979; Minister of State for Industry 1981; Secretary of State for Employment 1981; Secretary for Trade and Industry 1983; Chancellor Duchy of Lancaster and Chairman of Conservative Party 1985-1987. He was a member of Margaret Thatcher’s Cabinet. Many of us will remember that he was severely injured in the IRA bombing of the Grand Hotel, Brighton in 1984. He was awarded the Companion of Honour in 1987 and entered the House of Lords in 1992. We are delighted that Norman Tebbit has agreed to this ‘Parkinson-style’ interview. We will be asking him about his public life and his life in Suffolk. There will be an opportunity for questions. The event will be held at the Grand Hall, The Town Hall, Hadleigh at 7.30pm, Friday 21st September. Entry is by ticket only, bought prior to the event. Tickets are £10 each and can be bought by contacting Sylvia Martin: 01473 823430 or emailing: smartin.chelwood@outlook.com

5 Top tips for selling your home Get it right first time. In today’s sensitive market place it is imperative to set the correct asking price right from the beginning. Homeowners that do will always be rewarded with the best possible selling price. Given the way that buyers now search for properties online, your biggest audience of buyers will be in the first few days/weeks of going onto the market and, as such, it’s important to capitalise on this demand. If you set higher prices, what your often find is that the property becomes a dated listing, resulting in poorer results. First impressions. A large number of buyers will drive by a property before committing to a viewing, and as such it’s important that your home looks fantastic every day that the house is on the market. Keeping windows clean, front gardens clear of weeds and the front door sparkling will always be good practise. Appeal to the subconscious. If you asked 1000 people if they wished to live in a clean and tidy home, I am pretty sure that they would all answer ‘clean and tidy’. As such, let’s give them a clean and tidy home to view. Smell like roses. Let’s not forget that you are selling a very expensive product, and setting the right environment is very important. So, open a window, put some fresh flowers on the table and think about a couple of subtle air fresheners to place around the house. Make it light. Almost every buyer in the market at some stage states that they are looking for a ‘bright house’ so let’s give them what they are asking for. Ensure that you are aware of the following; all light bulbs are working, make sure doors and windows are open, weather permitting, and even any very dark coloured walls repainted lighter. If you are thinking of a possible move soon, or just require some general advice about selling, then please get in touch, we are always happy to take the time to talk to you. A sizzling summer has provided a welcome window for some of the works around the mill. Having seen very little rain for 50 days or so water levels in the river and mill pond have been incredibly low. The limited water levels have made turning the waterwheel by water power impossible but has allowed a great opportunity for much needed repairs and maintenance to be carried out on the weir gates and mill pond walls. George and Charles are pictured repairing severely damaged and cracked walling to the mill pool. Having cleared away a large amount of foliage the extent of the damage was very visible. Several large sections of walling had broken away, cracked and many bricks needed replacing. A section of bank had slipped and the gates to the the weir needed general maintenance before the high waters return. Water flow is a very important ingredient for a watermill, too little or too much is not good. A mill such as Kersey Mill will not operate satisfactorily all year round on a small river like the Brett due to the variability of the water supply. The river level increases rapidly after a shower but decreases to levels that we have recently seen during the summer, milling would not be possible in these conditions. The Mill Pond at Kersey would have been created around 1860 with the introduction of the steam driven side of the mill thus giving the miller a more constant supply of energy and enable milling all year round. The miller would have been able to store far greater quantities of water in the mill pond for the steam engine than could be held in the mill race and river to feed the water wheel. The mill pond will not be used again to power a steam engine but nevertheless it is a very important part of the history of the mill and needs preserving hence the current works. Works to the Hurst Frame have continued at a pace with the bed now being reinstated, pictured is Bill Griffiths working on the bed. More on this next month.

Bildeston’s Boule-in Fete d’Automne With the endless days of sunshine and harvest gathered in it's time to enjoy September's gift of long evenings and nature's changing colours: So what better start to the season than a trip to Bildeston's Boule-in Fete d'Automne (8th - 16th September : 10am - 5pm daily) “We've just got home with another enormous lorry load of new stockâ€? enthuses Cathy Bullen, who together with her husband Peter, run this ever flourishing business. “Having spent most of the summer scouring the French markets for unusual pieces we're really excited about what we've got in store for our FĂŞte d'Automne customers - we always create a new look for each event, with our initial inspiration coming from one or two distinct pieces. This time we've been spoilt for choice as our Autumn collection ranges from the most amazing Louis XIV style sofa and chairs through to Art Deco decanters and Mid-Century glassware...personally I'm most thrilled to have found a spectacularly huge copper which came from the perfume factories in Grasse! It's definitely the piece I most want to keep from this autumn's collection - but I know I'm definitely not allowed to!! Hopefully it'll be bought by someone who'll love it as much as I do....â€? It's hard to imagine how Cathy can resist many of the stunning decorative pieces - especially as they're for both home and garden spaces “I used to find it really difficultâ€? she admits “but I take pleasure in creating the new settings so it's like having - and enjoying - a whole new decor for a little while.â€?Any visitor who steps through the unassuming High Street entrance can't fail to be delighted by this uniquely enjoyable shopping experience - whether you're looking for a gift for a friend, something for yourself, your home - or indeed beautiful and unusual bulbs and plants to refresh your Autumn planting there's something to tempt and inspire. So be warned : It's difficult to leave without a bag or two on your arm together with a brownie or two in your tummy! Climate Chaos Sun 5th Rise 06.14 Set 19.32; 15th Rise 06.30 Set 19.09; 30th Rise 06.55 Set 18.34. Moon New 9th, Full-25th. Planets Earth, reaches its second equinox of the year on the 23rd. The start of astronomical autumn. Mars, still blazes like a hot coal in the southern sky. The Moon is close-by on the 16th. Saturn, becomes stationary on the 6th, the rings are at their most open on the 18th. Uranus, currently in Aries, the Moon is close-by on the 27th. Neptune, will be located 2 degrees north of the Moon on the 23rd. A pair of binoculars at least will be required to see it. Climate Chaos Turning on the news recently and you cannot have failed to notice the severe heatwave that has affected much of Europe during the Summer. Landscapes have literally turned from green to brown in a month. The most severe hit areas were ourselves, northern France and Germany, where many farmers are facing one of the worst droughts in decades. Since late Spring, a persistent area of high pressure has been situated over us, meaning the jet stream - the high altitude winds that drive our weather - has been positioned further north (Iceland has had its wettest Summer on record because of this). The high pressure system acts like a block and drives the jet stream either to the north or south of it, which takes the low pressure systems with it. With us being in Summer, the jet stream is usually weak anyway meaning it doesn't have the clout to move the highs' out of the way unlike in autumn for example when it packs a punch and delivers storms on a regular basis. In Norway and Finland the temperatures have reached 32 degrees C in the Arctic Circle; Greenland - which has a mean summer temperature of -2.6 degrees C has had weeks of temperatures of +17 (20 degrees above normal). Southern Europe has suffered too with Portugal and Spain recording temperatures of over 45 degrees C, and Greece has had its worst wildfires in more than a decade. All this comes after an unusually warm Spring. Germany had its warmest and driest April - July period since 1881, with temperatures almost 4 degrees C above the norm. It is true that summer is supposed to be hot but it is the fact that the entire globe was subjected to above normal temperatures for such a long period that is the worrying trend. Each month an area somewhere breaks records in regards to weather and how anyone can deny now a runaway greenhouse effect is beyond me. Despite a chaotic few days before the event, everyone seemed to enjoy our Open Day and Fun Dog Show. After a storm left a trail of devastation on the Friday night, our fantastic team rallied at silly o’clock on Sunday morning and restored order ready for the visitors’ arrival at midday. Although a little wet, it was a happy day with lots of laughs as volunteers hung onto legs and roofs while others made running repairs to the billowing gazebos! Most importantly, many animals were rehomed but more are coming in so if you are looking for a pet to complete your family, please visit us when we reopen in September. Mum is still looking after injured and orphaned wildlife including a baby duckling that arrived recently. Those bad mannered seagulls that gave me a peck are now living in an outside pen (best place for them in my opinion!) until they are old enough to be released. Our Autumn Fair takes place 11-3pm on 16th September at the Village Hall, Great Bentley, CO7 8LG. Lots of quality items including gifts, antiques, collectables with good food – and me! Looking ahead, if you would like a table at our Christmas Fair, please phone 01206 263269 to book. ‘Understanding Dyslexia’ - special events at Hadleigh Library Hadleigh Library is hosting a celebration of National Dyslexia Awareness Week from 1st to 7th October 2018. Dyslexia Specialist and organiser, Charmaine McKissock, says that this year’s events will ‘focus on the needs of family members and other helpers, who would like to know more about supporting people with dyslexia. We recognise the special skills and successes of people with dyslexia, without playing down the difficulties that dyslexia can create in education, work and daily life. (At the end of the article, you will find a list of famous dyslexics, which will be of interest to your readers) People with dyslexia may often avoid situations involving literacy skills out of fear. However reading and writing allow you to enter new worlds and think new ideas. They can be some of the most pleasurable and important human activities, yet many don’t have full access to these because of literacy difficulties. This is why we are committed to raising awareness of dyslexia.’ We aim to offer: - A free workshop ‘Helping People with Wobbly Spelling’ with Dyslexia Specialist Charmaine McKissock on Saturday 6th October 11AM -1PM. The workshop will be informal, enjoyable and supportive, so please don’t feel nervous about joining. There’s a limited amount of places, so please reserve your space by contacting cmckissock@aol.com - Books/ information about Dyslexia - Confidential drop-in advice sessions staffed by Suffolk Dyslexia Association’ at Hadleigh Library For more information, please drop into Hadleigh Library or phone 01473 823778

Hadleigh & District Garden Club Monday August 13th 2018: We had a very interesting and enjoyable evening with Neil Bradfield in August. Neil is a professional gardener very much involved with Plant Heritage and was able to share with us his knowledge of and involvement with the group, the main aim of which is to conserve the diversity of cultivated plants. This serves a vital role as he explained that 50,000 plants have disappeared from the 'Plant Finder' directory. Plant Heritage has 32 local county groups with over 400 plant collection holders, 14 of which are in Suffolk, and these collections are open to the general public. The evening ended on a practical note with Neil giving detailed demonstrations of propagating salvias and twin scaling bulbs to increase stock. I think many of us learned something new. Some sad news to end with - one of our members, John Rye, passed away in July. He joined the club in 1975 just after he and his family moved to Hadleigh. Over the years he and his wife took on many roles for the club. His wife Mary was our secretary at one time and, until a few years ago, John was our club president - he will be very much missed. Our next get together on Monday September 10th 2018: This month we welcome Janet Parsons as our guest speaker, the theme for the evening will be 'Orchids', a subject new for the club. The meeting starts at 7.30pm in Hadleigh Town Hall and is £3 for non members and £1 for members, to include refreshments. The competition for this month is ' five runner beans on a plate', and of course we will also have the usual sales table and raffle. We are always happy to welcome new members and we look forward to seeing you there.

Unlike many other Suffolk towns and villages Capel St Mary does not have a memorial to commemorate those in its communities who died in the two world wars of the last century. The village would have had a memorial to men from the village who lost their lives serving their country but the money collected for it back in the 1920s was given instead to the old Ipswich Hospital to help fund treatment for the wounded. Now fittingly, 100 years after the end of the First World War, Capel St Mary’s first ever war memorial will be officially unveiled on the 11th November. Work is on-going but until the Dedication in November, the monument and memorial garden will be enclosed in boarding painted with murals by East Bergholt High School students. The war memorial has been a project which has energised the local community and beyond, to engage in a number of fundraising activities, all under the guidance of Capel St Mary War Memorial Fund and its Chairman Group Captain Gary Bunkell. Collier & Catchpole is one of the local businesses to lend its support by donating the paving slabs to be used as part of the landscaping project for the memorial. It is not the first memorial in which this independent builders’ merchant has been involved. Back in 2013, Collier & Catchpole donated the materials for a monument on the Ipswich Road, Colchester to commemorate the crew of a Lancaster bomber which crashed as it tried an emergency landing at Boxted Airfield in 1944. Managing Director Tim Rowbottom explains why these projects are so important: “We are a family firm with roots in East Anglia, going back almost 200 years. As a business, it is a strong sense of community which sets us apart from other merchants. We recognise the importance of this and are happy to lend our strength, which is being a supplier of the best quality building materials, to key local community projects.” For further information and details of other key supporters, see: www.capelmemorial.org.uk project website

Down to Earth ...with Dave I must start this article with the sad news that John Rye has died. Due to continuing ill health it was his decision a couple of years ago to stop writing his regular article for the Community News. This led me to start writing this down to earth column. John was a much respected member of the local community and will be sadly missed. The excessive heat we have had for several months has finally given way to a more normal weather pattern, with the heavy rain coming just in time to save some of the plants in the garden and allow the hosepipe to be put away for now. Goodness knows water the water meter bill will be. It is quite amazing how the grass has greened up, although some lawns that were trimmed a bit low are taking longer to recover. The moral is to raise the mower blades up a bit and the grass will recover quicker. This year we have resisted the temptation to buy so many plants and in future we will be more selective in the plants that we grow, paying more attention to how they react to the drier conditions that we will no doubt be getting in the future. On a visit at the beginning of August to the summer show at the R.H.S gardens Hyde Hall, we came away with fewer plants than normal and the ones we did buy were more suited for pots than borders. This show seems to get better every year with many attractions such as a pair of lady harpists, so relaxing to listen to whilst having a coffee. A display of superb bespoke built shepherds hut, more money than we could ever afford. A mobile flower bus showing some clever ideas on British flower arranging. Who would have thought to put a single shortened Hydrangea bloom on its own in a vase? Plus all the usual trade stands all showing drought resistant plants. A very pleasant day out. Back on the allotment everything is growing at a fair old pace with the weeds at the moment winning the race. The answer is of course regular hoeing. I have never seen so many courgettes and squash. There is already a line of squash ripening on a shelf in the greenhouse. It is a pity the courgettes don’t store. Unfortunately some of them grow quickly that they end up on the compost. The potatoes are a bit small this year no doubt due to the very dry weather. With water being so precious they were not watered. The potato and the tomato are related but if you get a green tomato like fruit on the potato foliage whatever you do don’t let any youngsters eat it as they are poisonous. The potatoes are being dug up as quickly as possible but they should be ok left in the ground for a few days. I don’t like to moan but the rain is holding things up a bit. As an experiment I am using some large non-returnable canvas builders bags as compost containers. So far it seems to be working with the compost heap never looking so tidy. That’s all for this time, Dave

East Anglian Garden Group We have spent a busy summer on our various garden visits. The first in May, to the magnificent Stody Gardens outside Holt, where, on a very cold day, we were overwhelmed by the sight of over 2000 specimens of Rhododendrons and Azaleas in full bloom. The colours were reflected in the numerous pools and streams in the water gardens. By the house, the formal borders were a riot of clashing colours, a real feast for the senses and absolutely glorious. In June we headed for Tom Stuart-Smith’s garden at Serge Hill in Hertfordshire. We were welcomed by Tom’s sister who looks after their mother’s house and densely planted borders and walled garden. This has been established by generations of the family and had a classic walled garden, with scrambling climbers, roses and herbaceous plantings, all in full bloom. Tom’s garden was equally fascinating, incorporating an installation of one of his Chelsea gardens in a sunken courtyard by his home. Behind this we enjoyed exploring many hidden borders and corners in a more formal design, before viewing the newly established Prairie Garden, all flowing beautifully into the surrounding landscape. At the end of June we celebrated our 50th Anniversary with a delicious buffet meal in the beautiful gardens of Parham Hall, opened especially for us by kind permission of the owners Adam and Sue Paul. Sue gave us an introduction to the history and current management of the garden, before she and Adam showed us round the crinkle-crankle walled kitchen garden, encompassing a wide variety of fruit trees, and well- tended vegetables. The hall is surrounded by landscaped grounds, all of which is tended by the owners, without extra help, quite a feat! We have an extra visit planned to the Salutation Gardens on the 5th September, and bookings are now being taken for that. Autumn meetings begin again on October 6th at the Chamberlin Hall, with Val Bourne and her talk ‘Peonies and Roses – A Marriage Made in Heaven’. Meanwhile we are working to help our gardens recover from the recent drought and hoping for more rain. eastangliangardengroup.onesuffolk.net

I don’t really like cauliflower, unless it is smothered in cheese sauce, so this recipe came as something of a surprise it is so yummy, and is shared courtesy of my husband, who also assures me that it enables you to have four of your five a day. With a nice glass of crushed and fermented grapes, that’s my carefully balanced meal sorted for the day! Crispy Cauliflower with Spicy Bean and Courgette Stew (All ingredients are available from Hadleigh Market, supermarkets or the Deli) Ingredients - for 4 people 2 large cauliflowers cut into florets, Mayonnaise (enough to cover the florets) 1 box (120g) Panko Breadcrumbs, Fajita spice (or your personal favourite) Glug of olive oil, 2 tins Borlotti beans, 2 courgettes 2 large garlic cloves, 1 red chilli (more if you like it hot), 1 bunch coriander 2 x 390g cartons chopped tomatoes with garlic and onion 150ml water, Salt and pepper, Sour cream to serve Method 1. Heat your oven to 200oC or equivalent. 2. Put the florets into a mixing bowl and season with salt and pepper. Stir in enough mayonnaise to cover each floret. 3. In another bowl mix the breadcrumbs with a heaped teaspoon of your spice mixture (use more if you like it spicy), add a little salt and a generous glug of olive oil. Mix well and then add to your cauliflower and mix together so that it is evenly coated. 4. Put the florets onto a baking tray and put in the oven. Check them after 20 minutes and if not crisp enough leave for another 5 minutes or so. 5. While the cauliflower is cooking, drain and rinse the beans and crush about a third of them in a small bowl (to thicken the stew). Cut the courgette into small pieces, roughly chop the coriander, finely chop the red chilli (take the seeds out if you want it milder) and grate or press the garlic. 6. In a large saucepan heat some oil and add the courgette for 3 minutes. Then add another heaped teaspoon of your spice and the garlic. Cook for another minute and then add the water and tomatoes. Simmer for 5 minutes and then add the crushed and whole beans. Cook until it thickens (about 5-6 minutes). 7. When the cauliflower and stew are ready take the stew off the heat and stir half the coriander. Add as much chilli as you want. 8. Spoon the stew into bowls and add a generous dollop of sour cream. Carefully arrange the cauliflower and finish with the remainder of the coriander.

All are welcome at the Steering Group meetings, which are usually held on the first Monday of the month. It is an opportunity for you to share your views and concerns with other members of the community. The meetings are attended by members of the Town Council, local groups and organisations and a representative from Babergh & Mid Suffolk Council (who prepares formal minutes of the meeting). The following is a summary report of the meeting held on 13th August 2018, chaired by Cllr Rickaby Shearly-Sanders. The Minutes of the meeting of 2 July 2018 were approved. Main Agenda - Hadleigh Sports Association Rolf Beggerow, Chair of Hadleigh United Football Club, gave a presentation in two parts. Hadleigh United Football Club. Rolf has been involved with the Club for over 20 years and has seen it grow to 900 members, with 280 registered players, 90 volunteers and a total of 20 Teams. This includes four senior teams, including a veterans (35 years +) and 16 Youth Teams from Under 8’s to Under 16’s. The Youth section makes full use of the available pitches at Hadleigh High School and the Club makes regular use of the pitch at Layham Road. Three different pitch sizes are required for different youth age groups. The Club has a lease on the ground at the Millfield where there is one main pitch, a second training pitch together with a modern clubhouse and changing facilities. The Senior 1st team plays in the Eastern Counties Premier League. The Club’s biggest challenge is to find more pitches to support the growing population of Hadleigh. Hadleigh Sports Association The idea for an informal association of sports clubs in Hadleigh was promoted by the Chairman of the Rugby Club and the Football Club. This initiative was born largely from the lack of involvement and progress in the Neighbourhood Plan. 11 Hadleigh Sports Clubs are involved with a combined membership of 2305 supported by 330 volunteers. The clubs have engaged in discussions involving collection and exchange of very detailed information of their activities, objectives and challenges both today and in the foreseeable future. The activity identified the need for more space to support the growth which is a common issue for many clubs who participated. The Association has also had discussions directly with Babergh and other planning consultants. Babergh (our local Planning Authority) approved late in 2017 a Leisure, Sport and Physical Education Strategy and the Hadleigh Sports Association is aware of the strategic direction announced. The Hadleigh sports information is being finalised and will shortly be made available to Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils and the Hadleigh Town Council for consideration in their planning processes. After this the information will be published to the Community. Visit Hadleigh – YouTube update: Stuart Service advised that sufficient funding had been received for a U-Tube channel for Hadleigh, which is exciting. The first U-Tube video has been made and is now available to view https://youtu.be/UREyTbUtWk4. There is a link from the Visit Hadleigh website. A monthly video is planned to promote all that Hadleigh has to offer, which will attract visitors and bring prosperity to the town. Jake Cardy, film producer, presented a preview of the next video which is in the making and includes some coverage of the recent Music Festival. Tidy Town: Volunteers have still continued to litter pick two sessions per week, despite high temperatures, and only one pick was cancelled due to heavy rain. The volunteers plan to join force with volunteers at Layham for their annual spring clean event. If anyone knows of an area in need of a litter pick, please send an email to ourtidytown@gmail.com Music Festival: The music festival was a great success and much enjoyed. Plans are already under way for the next one in 2020. Town Council: Cllr Byrne stated that following elections of new candidates, there is now a full council. She stated that the cemetery extension would commence in a few weeks. Hadleigh Legacy Group: The arrival of Shearman the Sheep in St Mary’s

Churchyard was recently celebrated. This fine sculpture of a Suffolk Sheep was created just for our town by Ben Bramma of Ben Bramma Metal Sculptures as a legacy of the Hadleigh Year of the Sheep 2015. Hadleigh and Boxford Patient Participation Group: Receptionists at the surgeries are now trained ‘navigators’ to direct patients appropriately for their needs. It may not always be necessary for patients to see a doctor, however if a patient requests to see a doctor, it will be arranged. Any Other business: We were advised that Reverend Jo Delfgou will be arriving in Hadleigh for the post of Rector at St Mary’s Church. He and his wife, Mary, will be arriving in early September. St Mary’s Fete will be held on Saturday, 1st September, 11:00am-4:00pm. It was requested that it be mentioned that there was an error in Cllr S. Dawson’s report in the Hadleigh Community News in August. There has been misunderstanding and the Steering Group did not choose the seat for the Market Place, as stated. Date of Next Meeting: The next meeting will be held on Monday, 3 September at 4:15pm at the Hadleigh Pool and Leisure Centre. The Chair will be Anita Young and the guest speaker will be Tom Brown, Director of the Green Light Trust.

Rotary Club of Hadleigh This month has been an important time for us, as it was decided that The Rotary Club of Hadleigh will be returning home, to a place that was their meeting point many years ago. From September our new venue will be The George in the High Street and we are looking forward to making it our regular meeting place once again. The coffee morning was held on the 7th at the Jet Lounge, it was great to see everyone chatting and enjoying the good coffee and cakes. We were able to welcome a visitor from the Rotary Club of Ipswich Wolsey, Mr Jerry Noble and we look forward to seeing him as a guest at one of our meetings in the near future. Our first meeting of this month was on the 14th August when we welcomed Mr Ron Jenkins the Chairman of Probus and Mr Fred Creed as our guests. After a short update plans were put into place for Sunday September 16th when Hadleigh’s 5th Community Wide Yard Sale will take place. We shall be operating a stall of our own raising funds for Rotary in The Hadleigh Pool and Leisure Centre. We look forward to seeing you there between 9.00 a.m. and 2.00 p.m. Debbie Hodge, who is The President of Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland, wants Rotarians to concentrate on five ‘Ps’ - People, Projects, Publicity, Polio and Peace. We will try to focus on at least three of them this year. In the autumn, we shall be planting purple crocus bulbs for Purple4Polio in Hadleigh. For our second we are trying to get publicity to create awareness of our club in our local magazines, so look out for us! The third will be projects, watch out during the coming months for our special events. At a previous meeting we attempted to hold a pool competition and realised that we have a couple of skilled players. This looks to be another activity that we will follow up in the coming months. The Rotary Club of Hadleigh meets twice a month at lunchtimes in Hadleigh and if you would like the opportunity to serve your local community and enjoy good company you would be most welcome to attend a meeting to find out what we do. HADLEIGH TOWN COUNCIL Report of the Meeting of the Council held on the 19th July 2018 Present: Councillors: Matthews (Town Mayor), Angland, Byrne, Cook, Free, Haines, Haylock, Monks, Schleip, Shearly-Sanders and Wiltshire. In attendance: Babergh District Councillors Campbell and Dawson and 26 members of the public. The Mayor welcomed Councillor Carol Schleip to the Town Council. APOLOGIES FOR ABSENCE Apologies were received from Councillors: Fraser and Shedrick. These apologies were accepted. DECLARATIONS OF INTEREST Councillor Wiltshire declared a non-pecuniary interest in the Hadleigh Skatepark item as she is a signatory for the Skatepark. Councillor Monks declared a non-pecuniary interest in Hadleigh Skatepark as she is working with Mr. Talbot and members of the Porch Project on issues related to the skatepark. MINUTES The Minutes of the Meeting of the Council held on the 21st June 2018, a copy of which is included in the Minute Book were taken as read and confirmed and signed. MATTERS ARISING Questions raised by Members of the Public – concerns were raised regarding the current state of the webpage as certain items were unavailable and that the webpage had been’taken down’. The Clerk advised that nothing had been removed from the webpage but this was a work in progress. The Mayor reported that a new router had been put in place as the new telephone system had affected the office wifi. HADLEIGH SKATEPARK At this point a presentation was made regarding the proposed extension to the existing facility and the costings involved. As Hadleigh Town Council had supported this venture previously and been involved with drawing up the lease there was no reason not to work together on the extension. A request was made for the lease to be investigated to ensure that the extension conforms to the terms of the lease. It was felt that this would be the case as the original lease had been drawn up between Hadleigh Town Council and Babergh District Council and solicitors. It was hoped that the proposed extension fell within the agreed piece of land. Councillor Angland asked that the Hadleigh Together webpage report on how helpful and supportive Hadleigh Town Council have been on this project. The Town Council staff were asked if there was sufficient time available to work on the grant submission. The staff advised that due to the office circumstances they would not have the time so Mr. Talbot advised that he would be able to carry out most of the work all that would be required was for the grant application to be checked prior to submission. SKATEPARK REQUEST Following the presentation two requests required a decision to be made: i) Would Hadleigh Town Council allocate the full £5,000 of CIL money to the skatepark extension project? Approval was proposed and seconded. Voting was unanimous. ii) Would Hadleigh Town Council approve pursuing an application to the Suffolk County Council LEADER programme with the Town Council as applicant (as per Viridor, this fund requires the landowner/leaseholder to be the applicant)? Approval was proposed and seconded. Voting was unanimous. POLICE The Clerk reported a letter from Suffolk Constabulary requesting Hadleigh Town Council fund a PCSO but without providing any details of the costs involved. The Clerk had requested this information but to date no figures had been received. Unfortunately it was felt that no decision could be made by HADLEIGH TOWN COUNCIL Full Council Meetings Date of Next Meetings at 7.30pm Thursday 20th September 2018. Thursday 18th October 2018 Planning Committees Date of Next Meeting at 7.00pm Thursday 20th September 2018

the requested closing date of Friday 17th August unless the financial information was received prior to that date. The Clerk reported that there were now nine new Community Engagement Officers (CEO’s) for Suffolk County Council and PC1397 had been allocated to Hadleigh. The Clerk had invited PC1397 to attend a future Town Council meeting at their convenience. Councillor Cook reported on the press release reporting on the reduction in PCSO’s and 100 officers were being moved into Safer Neighbourhood Teams. These were not additional officers but officers moved from elsewhere. Councillor Cook raised three questions: i) What has happened to Hadleigh’s PCOS ii) Will there be anyone attached to Hadleigh’s Safer Neighbourhood Team iii) If the 100 officers are being taken from elsewhere what is it that they are not going to be doing? Councillors had been provided with a letter from UNISON police staff raising similar concerns. It was agreed that a letter be sent to Tim Passmore expressing Hadleigh Town Council’s concerns and supporting those raised by UNISON. REPORTS OF THE COUNTY & DISTRICT COUNCILLORS Written reports had been received from Babergh District Councillors Dr Dawson, Campbell and Grandon. Babergh District Councillor Grandon had tendered her apologies. Councillor Dawson answered questions on the bench in the Market Place which was due to have been replaced in August but she had now asked to be delayed. It was agreed that she would meet with Councillor Haylock to find a way to move this forward. Councillor Dawson then presented the plans of the proposed dwelling on the land at the front of Hadleigh Hall. Babergh District Council’s Planning Committee was discussing this application on Wednesday 25th July therefore the Mayor advised Councillor Dawson that it was not appropriate for this to be discussed at this meeting. Councillor Dawson was also advised that it was felt inappropriate stating that she would be recommending approval of this application prior to the Babergh Meeting. Councillor Campbell was asked if anyone was using the new electric vehicle charging points in the town. She was advised that they were. MAYOR’S COMMUNICATIONS The Mayor reported on an e.mail received following the May meeting regarding the statement from the staff and Past Mayor. He advised that after speaking to both parties they had nothing further to add. The Clerk asked that following the media training held on the 27th June could any recommendations be made to the office for consideration by the Finance & Personnel Committee on the 2nd August. The Clerk read an e.mail from a resident thanking Hadleigh Town Council for sponsoring the recent Music weekend as it was good to see so many people enjoying the music arranged. The Clerk advised that four Freedom of Information requests had been responded to this month. The Clerk read out an e.mail from a resident following the Town Poll. The letter had been submitted to the East Anglian Daily Times but had been shortened and the request was made for Councillors to be made aware of the full content. Councillor Wiltshire enquired who the resident was but was advised that due to GDPR this could not be revealed without the residents consent. Councillor Wiltshire therefore felt that the comments held no value. QUESTIONS RAISED BY MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC The following question was read out: Will the Council reinstate the public opportunity to speak at meetings? The answer given was that this was due to be reviewed by the Finance & Personnel Committee on the 2nd August. A second question had been asked but as this referred to the Town Poll the Mayor requested that this be dealt with under that Agenda item. This was agreed. STANDING ORDER NO. 40 Councillor Schleip asked when is it anticipated that Hadleigh will have an approved Neighbourhood Plan in place? Requested that a detailed report be provided for the Planning Committee containing the following information: a) A detailed timeline which includes target dates for achieving the proposed states of an approved Neighbourhood Plan b) Details of the studies which will need to be undertaken c) The arrangements for public engagement d) Details of the monies Hadleigh Town Council has lost by not having a Plan in respect of CIL income for the following years. Babergh District Council can provide this information: 2016/2017; 2017/2018;2018/2019 (estimated). The Mayor advised that this could be discussed under the confidential item on the Agenda. ACCOUNTS FOR PAYMENT It was RESOLVED that accounts amounting to £31,619.34 including HMRC, Utilities, SCC Pension Fund and staff salaries be approved for payment. Councillor Shearly-Sanders proposed that the occupational fee to the Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity be dealt with as a separate item. This was proposed by Councillor Shearly-Sanders, seconded by Councillor Wiltshire. Voting was 4 in favour – 7 against so this proposal failed. Councillor Shearly-Sanders requested a named vote on approval of the payment schedule. This was proposed by Councillor Byrne, seconded by Councillor Angland. Voting was For: Councillors: Angland; Byrne, Cook, Free, Haylock, Matthews and Monks. Against: Councillors: Schleip, Shearly-Sanders and Wiltshire. Abstentions: Councillor Haines PLANNING COMMITTEE The Minutes of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 28th June 2018 were noted. SPORTS & OPEN SPACES COMMITTEE The Report of the Meeting of the

Committee held on the 5th July 2018, was received and accepted including the recommendation that the planning application for the proposed pavilion be discussed by Finance & Personnel Committee. TOWN POLL The Mayor presented the results of the Town Poll held on 28th June 2018. The question asked was: Would you like the current Councillors of Hadleigh Town Council to resign (due to having no confidence in them due to the Town Council being dysfunctional in their current form)? A total of 743 people voted – turnout was 11%. Yes 489. No 252. The Mayor asked the question raised by a resident: Will each and every Councillor who was in position prior to the referendum on 28th June give their reason for not standing down as 65% of the voters requested. Further bolstered by 65% of the voters electing Councillor Schleip, a supporter of the Yes Campaign. Would the Councillors also state what percentage of the voters voted for them, and if they were elected unopposed to state that fact. The Mayor asked if any Councillor wished to respond – all those in attendance declined. Councillor Wiltshire questioned the Mayor as to why he had spoken to the press advising that no Councillors would be resigning when he had not spoken with her. The Mayor advised that he had actually said that “as far as he was aware” no Councillors would be resigning. Councillor Monks brought to Council attention: The amount of £10,092 is held in the budget for Elections. The estimated costs to date are: Parish Poll £2,900, South Ward Election £4,200, 2nd August Elections £12,400. Making a total of £19,500 which leaves £9408 unbudgeted on elected costs. The residents of Hadleigh may be picking up that bill in their Council Tax. LEGAL ADVICE Councillor Wiltshire had requested this item on the Agenda asking for legal advice to be taken over the lease arrangements with the Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity and also for Councillors in respect of responsibilities and personal liabilities. There seemed to be some confusion over this request as to what advice could be sought whilst a lease was being investigated by Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity. The Town Council’s solicitor had advised that the occupation fee should continue to be paid until the investigation was completed. Councillor Angland, as Chair of the Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity, advised on the work being carried out by the Charity’s solicitors and the lease would be presented to Hadleigh Town Council once complete. This is being held up because the Charity Commission have failed to provide the information requested. It was agreed that once this information was available a special meeting would be called. The Chair, Vice-Chair and a Feoffee of the Charity had been working on this for the past nine months and were also frustrated by the delay. There was information requested by Councillors but they were advised that this would need to be raised at the next Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity Meeting. Councillor Wiltshire asked if she could resign as a Trustee but was advised that this could only happen if she resigned as a Councillor. She could, however, choose not to attend any Charity meetings. The Clerk was asked to provide all Councillors with a document on the responsibility of a Feoffee and to visit the Charity Commission website to view their document. It was felt that the time to take legal advice on behalf of Hadleigh Town Council would be when the lease was presented by the Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity. SUBMISSION DRAFT SUFFOLK MINERALS & WASTE LOCAL PLAN CONSULTATION The Clerk had been asked to contact Layham Parish Council as the Layham Pit was mentioned in the documentation. The Clerk of Layham Parish Council had advised that a response from Layham Gravel Pit had been requested but not received. Layham Parish Council had no comment to make but would be interested in Hadleigh Town Council’s response. It was agreed that a letter be sent advising that should expansion of Layham Pit be considered it was hoped that Hadleigh Town Council would be a consultee. It had also been noted that ten new pits were due for expansion including one at Belstead. There were concerns that this expansion may mean that aggregate may be brought to Hadleigh quarry for washing as large equipment had just been installed there. Concerns were also raised regarding the proposed closure of some landfill sites. Overall though it was felt that this was a worthy document and could not be disagreed with. There being no further business the meeting ended at 9.40pm. Mrs Carol A. Bailey BA(Hons) PSLCC CiLCA – Town Clerk Addendum: This is a draft report of the meeting. The Minutes will be approved at the Monthly Town Council Meeting held on the third Thursday of the following month. In attendance: 8 members of the public. The Chair welcomed Councillor Schleip to the meeting. APOLOGIES FOR ABSENCE Apologies for absence had been received from Councillors: Matthews and Sheldrick. These apologies were accepted. MINUTES The Minutes of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 21st June

2018 were confirmed as a correct record and signed. MATTERS ARISING Councillor Wiltshire questioned the statement made by the Mayor at the last meeting regarding the Ledbury decision as she felt this was incorrect. As the Mayor was not at the meeting the Clerk advised that she would speak to the Mayor and provide Councillors with the information as to who had provided him with the information in writing. TOWN AND COUNTRY PLANNING The Committee considered the applications for Planning Consent, details of which are listed below and upon which the following decisions were reached:DC/18/02883 31 Bradfield Avenue, Erection of extensions and alterations, Approval was recommended (Voting was unanimous) DC/18/02928 Evans Hall, Evans Heath, Application for Listed Building Consent – Replacement of 6 existing windows to rear ground elevation and replacement of 1 existing kitchen door to rear ground elevation. Approval was recommended (Voting was unanimous) DC/18/02945 Sun Court, 107 High Street, Works to Trees in a Conservation Area Notification. Reduce Ash tree by 30% to improve light to greenhouse and garden This application was noted. Councillor Cook arrived. DC/18/02955 Dove Cottage, 121 Benton Street, Change of use of existing outbuilding to form separate residential dwelling and associated alterations, Refusal was recommended (Voting was 8 for and 1 abstention) The reason for refusal was due to the unsuitability of access to the site. The Committee agreed with those concerns raised by residents. DC/18/02960 4 Pykenham Way, Erection of a single storey side extension, Approval was recommended (Voting was unanimous) DC/18/02988 Linton View, Tower Mill Lane, Erection of extension and alterations. Letter from Layham www.layham.org

Parish Council The main matters discussed at the Parish Council meeting of 25 July 2018 were: • Public Forum The parishioner present referred to the agenda item concerning litter bins on the playing field. There were currently two wheelie bins at the Recycling Site, one green one and a blue one for recycling; he felt that the green bin was confusing as parishioners were used to black bins. He suggested that the green bin should be relocated to nearer the football pitch, and a new black bin acquired for the Recycling Centre. It was agreed to follow this suggestion up. • Co-option for casual vacancy The working party had met all candidates and had circulated a paper to councillors before the meeting. Any one of the candidates would have been an asset to the council, but the working party’s recommendation that Charlotte Britton should be co-opted was accepted. • Defibrillator for Brett Green Two parish councillors had met with the Hadleigh Masons and explained the need for additional funding. The advice was to apply to the national fund in August, when the next bidding cycle would start; any funding from the Masons would be for projected projects rather than completed ones. • Green Team A working party had cleared the Himalayan Balsam from alongside the ditch near the playing field with the help of volunteers. As Babergh had not removed the debris accumulated during the edging work on Brett Green as promised, this had also been done by volunteers. • Proposals to reduce PCSO workforce The Branch Secretary of Suffolk Police UNISON had written to all town and parish councils requesting them to write to the Chief Constable and the Police & Crime Commissioner urging them to reconsider the proposals. It was agreed in principle to do so; the Clerk would circulate the letter for comment before responding. A new Parish Councillor Following the resignation of Doreen Sillett from the Parish Council it was necessary to co-opt a replacement. We were delighted when five members of the community put their names forward for consideration. All of them had qualities that would have been assets to the council but in the end a choice had to be made and Charlotte Britton has been asked to fill the vacancy. In a strong field Charlotte offered several years of recent experience in community development, working for Essex County Council. It was felt we would be able to take advantage of her experience and skills during the nine months that our Council has remaining before elections for a new group. It is encouraging that there is so much interest in our council and it is to be hoped that all four of the other applicants will be interested in putting themselves forward in May of 2019. A new Picnic Table We used the profit from the 100 Club this year to purchase a family-sized picnic table and benches. It was pieced together and installed by a group of volunteers one July evening. The picture shows James Mosley, Ron Gunn, Anthony Owers and a passer-by (back to camera) puzzling over how to fix the last few screws. Graham Coleman, Simon Bewsher and Michael Woods – were all in the action. Heart Failure A recent visitor to Lower Layham suffered a serious heart attack. Thanks to the quick action of two local residents, the use of CPR, followed by the administration of electric shock treatment (using the defibrillator outside the Queen’s Head) followed by the arrival of a Hadleigh First Responder, the patient was revived and quickly moved to Ipswich Hospital. He has since made a satisfactory recovery. This event demonstrates the great value of having defibrillators around the village. CPR Would you have known what to do faced with a similar situation? Would you want to be able to help? Regular appeals appear in ‘Letter from Layham’ for people to take part in an hour’s basic training in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation have largely drawn a blank. Let’s try again. Please contact the Parish Clerk (Jane Cryer) on layhampc@gmail.com and add your name to the waiting list for a place on a short course. As soon as we have a group of six a training session will be arranged at a date and time to suit all concerned. Dead Fish in the River Brett Hundreds of fish died in the River Brett over the weekend 28/29 July. The very hot weather over the whole of the month led to fast-growing algae cutting oxygen levels. The problem was exaggerated by thunderstorms causing river pollution in places. Dead and dying fish accumulated at Layham Mill and local people did their best to save those still showing signs of life, transferring them to less polluted parts of the river.

A team from the Environment Agency spent several days at Layham Mill removing dead fish – including several sizeable pike shown in the picture. They then deployed aeration equipment to boost oxygen levels by pumping water at pressure into the worst affected areas.

Centenary of the end of the First World War Plans are progressing for the commemoration of the ending of the First World War on the weekend of November 10th & 11th at St Andrews Church, Lower Layham. Dear Sir, I would like to comment on both the Hadleigh South Election (5th July) and also the Hadleigh Town South Election (2nd August). The fact there have been two elections, so close together recently is very confusing. Not only that but we have not been given ANY information about the elections, nor the candidates themselves. I tried to find out about Carol Schleip from the council and was not allowed to have any contact details, only her address. On the form for the first Election, as now with the second, there is no information so we can decide who to vote for. Neither Carol Schleip nor Andrew Knock have any party that they represent, but at least Glenn Root shows that he is standing as an Independent candidate. Carol did eventually respond to me when I had a leaflet through my door with her email address (this was long after the date for postal votes), so we could not use our democratic right to vote, as we were not prepared to vote blind. As we use the postal voting system, we need to vote earlier than most. Without any information about these candidates, we simply can’t vote at all! How are we supposed to get information? Please can someone address this in future? Jan Barton

Dear Sir, Contrary to Cllr Sian Dawson’s comments in the last issue of Hadleigh Community News, the new bench for the Market Place is going ahead as planned. It has been ordered and should be in place soon. I am sure everyone will be relieved to see the dilapidated old one removed and replaced with a smart new bench as it is one of the important parts of our town. The new circular bench will be located around the tree, attached to the outer circle of the decorative paving. The shape will be two half-circles to enable access to plant flowers around the tree and for people to sit looking towards the tree or outwards. While contemporary in style, it will be made of wood, with black metal supports and will look fitting in this special location. The style of bench has been chosen with care and consideration by members of the Hadleigh Steering Group after much consultation with Babergh District Council. We will soon be able to enjoy a much smarter Market Place and the bench will be perfect for taking a break from shopping on market day! Kathryn Grandon, Babergh District Councillor for Hadleigh South

Dear Sir, I attended my first town council meeting on 19 July and was pleased to see a good number of the public there. However, I left after an hour as I could hear very little of what was being said. The chairman was reasonably clear and one or two of the councillors, but mostly it was just muttering round the table. The only bright spot was a lady who wasn’t introduced (presumable a district or county councillor) who stood up when she spoke and addressed both the meeting and the public very clearly. How about a public address system or sending the all councillors on a public speaking course! Cathy Snow

Dear Sir, I’d like to say a huge thanks to everyone who turned out to vote in the recent election, it’s the biggest turn out for North and South Wards for quite some time, I’d like to say a massive thanks to everyone who helped deliver my leaflet and also help me along the way. A Huge Congratulations to Cllr Andrew Knock for Hadleigh South and also Brian Loftus for Hadleigh North. I wish you both the best of luck for serving the Hadleigh community in an open and transparent way. Kieron Ruddy

Conditions take a Toll In this article we remember: Bertrum Henry Wallis 18 September 1918 Isaac Everett 24 September 1918 Samuel King 27 September 1918 Hadleigh readers of the Daily Mirror on 11 September 1918 would have read the front page headline “The Ceaseless Battle of the West is Raging” and seen Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig’s special Order of the Day; “Less than six months after the launching of the great German offensive which was to have cut the Allied front in two, the Allied Armies are everywhere today advancing victoriously side by side over the same battlefields. The capture of 75,000 prisoners and 750 guns in the course of four weeks’ fighting speaks for the magnitude of your efforts and the magnificence of your achievements.” The German Army had finally completed its retreat to the Hindenburg Line and the British troops following with caution, conservation of energy and resources were at that stage avoiding outright attacks. This was a critical time for the Allies. If they were to break through the complex defences that formed the Hindenburg Line, they would see the war won in 1918. September was the month that saw the concentrated effort that was the Battle of the Hindenburg Line and the much awaited breakthrough on the 29th. The three men with Hadleigh connections who fell in September fought in the midst of this action where in an area south of a line between Bapaume and Cambrai. Captain Bertrum Henry Wallis MC was the son-in-law of John H Payne, boot and furniture dealer at 3/5 High Street, Hadleigh; he had married Margaret in April 1916. Wallis was attached to 1/1st Cambridge Regiment and on 8 August 1918 saw action at Morlancourt, at the start of the battle of Amiens and the drive towards the Hindenburg Line. Referring to the Battalion’s involvement on this first day the Commanding Officer wrote in the war diary; “This attack, though hastily conceived, was carried out particularly well and great credit is due to Lieutenant C H Hollis and Captain B H Wallis for their excellent handling of the operation.” For this Wallis was later awarded the Military Cross. He remained at the heart of the action throughout the drive towards the east. On 18 September the war diary records, “Battalion attacked. Heavy mist and rain difficult to maintain direction. All companies met with stiff opposition. Epehy was garrisoned by troops of Bavarian Alpine Corps who offered strenuous resistance.” In this action Captain Bertrum Henry Wallis was shot through the heart and died instantly. He was born Albert Henry Wallis in Elmstead, Essex 1891, the son of a policeman. He found employment as bank clerk, but on 27 August 1914 enlisted as a private with the Army Service Corps using ‘Bertrum’ as his forename. In May 1915 he received a commission and was promoted to captain in November 1917 and it was not until 20 July 1918, 18 days before Amiens, that he arrived to reinforce the Cambridge Regiment and this was probably the first time he found himself in a front line infantry battalion. The day after he was killed in September the Battalion had made progress and his body was recovered and buried at Epehy Wood Farm Cemetery, west of Peronne. He is remembered on the Dedham and the Hadleigh war memorials. In mid-September 1918 the 2nd Suffolks found themselves in the midst of the Hindenburg Line and were held up in a sunken road at Beaumetz-lez-

GREAT WAR NEWS SEPTEMBER 1918 (as reported in the Suffolk and Essex Free Press of the day)

Wed 11 Sep Private Sidney Maskell (from 14 Angel Street) Royal Fusiliers, Western front says: ‘Our battalion has received congratulations from high quarters on its successful operations. In two days we captured 123 prisoners, several machine guns and a filed gun. The news from all sectors of this front gets better every day and I hope it will continue so until the end. We are harvesting Huns everywhere and when the Americans get into full swing it will be a poor look out for them as I fancy their schemes are already upset.’ Wed 18 Sep The announcement that Lieut Norman Mason, Machine Gun Corps, youngest son of Mr P S Mason of Layham Mill, has won the Military Cross will doubtless be read with pride and pleasure by the inhabitants of the village and others that know him. Wed 18 Sep Mrs Wright, who is with her husband, Pte Tom Wright in France, writes to say that there is some hope of his recovery. We all trust this will be realised. Cambrai, astride the Bapaume-Cambrai road. Here by the use of sand models, the battalion planned and trained for the next move. The vulnerable position meant there was casualties and among them was Private Isaac Everett from Hadleigh. Isaac Everett was an old soldier, he was born in Benton Street in March 1874 and went to the British School (now the Ansell Centre), he enlisted at the age of eighteen into the Suffolk Artillery and transferred to the Suffolk Regiment in 1894. He saw service with the 1st Suffolks in the second South African war and was awarded the King’s South Africa medal. In 1911 he was with the battalion in Egypt and was discharged in January 1913. At the outbreak of the Great War he rejoined the Suffolks as a special reservist and was sent to France on 27 December 1915 with 2nd Suffolks. He seems to have remained with the battalion though out their actions at the Somme, Arras, Passchendaele and throughout the 1918 German Spring Offensive. His experience must have been highly valued particular in the battalion’s training sessions with sand models by the Cambrai road where he was killed. He has a known grave at Beaumetz-Les-Cambrai and is remembered on the Hadleigh War memorial. At the end of September the 5/6th Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) were close to the 2nd Suffolks south of the Bapaume-Cambrai road at Villers Guisllain, here Private Samuel King from Hadleigh was fatally wounded. He was also born in Benton Street but went to Bridge Street School and enlisted with the Suffolk Regiment in 1907. Samuel King was seventeen years junior to Isaac Everett but they both went to France in the same contingent. King was known to have been well in March 1916 but at some stage suffered shell shock probably during the First Battle of the Somme and spent 6 months in hospital. When he had recovered he was transferred to the Scottish Rifles and was back on the Western Front in October 1917 when the battalion was on the Ypres Salient and the Battle of Passchendaele was happening. The Scottish Rifles remained on the Salient until August 1918, but with Haig’s determination to break the Hindenburg Line before winter the battalion was moved south. On 21 September 1918 they were south of Bapaume and went into attack. Six days later, on what the war diary described as a ‘quiet day in the line’, unconscious and with massive head injuries Samuel King was taken to the Casualty Clearing Station where he died. He has a known grave at Beaulencourt and is remembered on the Hadleigh War memorial. If you have information that would expand our knowledge of Hadleigh men who fell in the Great War, then Hadleigh Great War Centenary Project would be pleased to hear from you. As a club we like to think that we cater for all kinds of people and events. This last month has been another busy few weeks with Hares taking part in all kinds of running, triathlon and cycling events, locally, and internationally. On the running side, the end of July is traditionally the time for the local Ekiden relays; an event organised by Ipswich Jaffas in which the local clubs enter teams to cover the full marathon distance in legs of up to 10km per runner. This year we fielded three junior teams and four senior teams. Each of the juniors were required to run 1.1 miles around a course at Woodbridge School and despite the warm weather everyone ran extremely well. Congratulations to Elena Cook, Ruby Avis, Ella Bodsworth, India Bostock, Kurtis Harrington, Sara Scaife, Isabel Scaife, Josephine Scaife, Billy Oxford, Ryan Fosker, Ella Jarvis and Heather Blacoe. The seniors ran a marathon as a relay in mixed teams, with runners covering 7.2k, 5k or 10k Notably, Scott Ramsey ran a 5k pb and then went on to storm around a 10k. Whilst everyone enjoyed the running I think the social aspect of the event is looked forward just as much. The fact that everyone stayed till the end cheering on the last leg runners is testament to this. Thank you to Bob Grimsey for organising the snacks and a huge well done to Elisa Bostock and her team for the time spent putting the teams together and organising them on the day. Being the now official ‘organising guy’, Bob Grimsey also put together the first of what will hopefully become an annual Club Trail Run. The run from the Limeburners in Offton attracted around forty participants and ended, predictably, in the pub for rehydration afterwards. The SVP100 (Stour Valley Path 100) is a bit of a challenge at the best of times, but in the recent scorching weather it became even more of an epic. Nevertheless, our own Rachel Bodsworth was up to the challenge and successfully completed the 100km course over uneven footpaths, across sticky fields, and through narrow green lanes. Well done to her! Our triathletes have been busy as well this month, none more so than Leon Hayward who represented Great Britain at the ETU European Championships in Tartu, Estonia. Here is his report of the day: Welcome to TARTU, ESTONIA! Tartu was the chosen location to host the ETU 2018 Triathlon European Championships. It was 4-days of races and many European Champion titles were up for the taking for elites and Age Group athletes. The race weekend also hosted many other events such as Open Water Swim (1,5km), City run and kids’ races. The Race centre was placed perfectly in the heart of the city and all the swimming (non-wetsuit) was in river Emajõgi (mother river). The bike section for the age groupers race took athletes outside the city and for other races such as Elite, Juniors, Paratri and Mixed relay had a city centre bike course with many loops. The running section for all athletes was around the city centre. The days leading to the age group race consisted of registration, Team GB briefings, Team GB Captains briefings, swim, bike and run course familiarisation and more importantly time to relax, equipment check, hydration, nutrition and soaking up the atmosphere of an ETU event. The race for me went well, the conditions were perfect and I was happy with my result, 11th in my AG (swim (1.7km): 23mins, cycle (40km) 60mins, run (10km) 39mins). Another race which has become a bit of a tradition with Hares is the Outlaw Half Ironman in Holkham Norfolk. The event takes place over a stunning course covering a 1.2 mile lake swim, 56 mile bike and 13.1 mile run. Holkham Estate and its magnificent eighteenth century hall provide a stunning backdrop to the swim, both transitions and the run. The bike course is a single loop taking in the coastal road, quiet country roads and some faster roads. The run

does feature some climbs across three loops around the Estate. We had three club members competing in this event these were; Adam Johnson, Iain Johnson and Jake Hayward. Considering the tough condition (extremely hot) and the distances, our club members put in a great performance with Jake came 3rd in his age group, Adam and Iain both put in a strong effort and finished well in some very hot and testing conditions. In the world of cycling, Trudy Avis, Deb Stewart and Lizzie Stewart have been taking part in the Videre Series of circuit races held at RAF Honington. It has been a bit of a learning curve but all three have consistently performed well. Best results so far after four of the six races are a third place for Lizzie, a couple of sixth places for Trudy and twelfth for Deb. These are fiercely competitive races an often end in a sprint for the line which sorts the strongest riders from the rest. Lizzie was lucky enough to get a place in this year’s Prudential Ride London sportive. Although too young to take part in the full 100mile event, she was able to complete the shorter 46 mile route. As it happens, although it was not a race, looking at the times of the finishers, she was the second fastest out of over 1500 female finishers! One to watch in the future! Finally, the Turners Blinds and Shutters 10 mile and John Chisnall 5 mile races are being held this year on Sunday 18th November, along with the popular Junior 2k Fun Run. Entries are online for all events and more details can be found on the Hadleigh Hares website. Both senior races sell out before the day so enter soon if you would like to run, we would love to see you there. Hadleigh Hares are a friendly local athletics club catering for all levels and abilities from beginners to Ironman triathletes. It is a fun and friendly way of getting or keeping fit. If you fancy coming along and joining at whatever level please contact us at chair@hadleighhares.co.uk or via Facebook. There is a beginners/improvers session every Monday evening at 7pm meeting at Hadleigh Pool, and we run a session for ladies only as well as more advanced running, and mixed ability swimming and cycling sessions throughout the week.

Hadleigh Dolphins Two Hadleigh Dolphins Swimming Club members recently returned from representing Great Britain in the Biathle/Triathle European Championships in Germany with a haul of medals. Elliot and Darcy Gladwell were competing in the Biathle event which is a continuous run-swim-run at a lake close to Weiden. Darcy was representing the U11 team and finished a superb 5th (3rd GB girl across the line) which gave her a team gold medal. Elliot was in the U15 age group and he finished 2nd in the individual event and also picked up a team gold, his last event was the mixed relay where he crossed the line first winning his third medal of the day. Over 400 competitors took part in the 2 day competition from 17 different European countries. A fantastic achievement and wonderful experience for them both.

Hadleigh Cricket Club Sponsored by Celotex Firstly, in response to last month’s questions: No, Absolutely Not and Yes! Starting with the latter, the 2nd XI DID WIN against Earl Stonham – our first for two months. This despite a ‘Richard of the Day’-earning run out of Jamie Colcomb by Ryan Phillips. Bloss Tampion once again dug deep to save his side with an unbeaten 60 – not for the first time this or any other season. Sadly this won’t be enough to turn around the team’s fortunes, especially after giving previously winless Kelvedon their first taste of victory. But the player’s spirits were lifted by news that Blake Ambrose has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket (or at least until next year). While the 2nd’s fate is inevitable, the First team can still save themselves – but they have now gone two months without a win. The defeats have ranged from the huge (180 runs against Worlington) to the sickeningly slender – the tworun margin at Mistley was especially hard to take, coming against one of our rivals at the bottom and after the guys had come so close to chasing down 256 after a poor start to their innings. Something in the team’s favour is that they have games against Frinton and Elmstead to come, which they will need to win to have a chance of staying up. We do have some success to report, however, as the club’s Under-19s stormed through to the Finals Day of the Suffolk T20 Blast by winning all four group games. After breezing past Sudbury home and away and Copdock at home, the most satisfying win was away at Copdock against a side packed with Premier league and County players. There have been 50s for Callum Morrin (twice), Oliver Peters, Matthew Kent and Harvey Skinner over the course of the competition and hopes are high that the Hadleigh Hurricanes can go one better than 2015 when they were runners-up. The Ladies are having another good season and played a rather remarkable game against Woolpit recently, when only one wicket fell and over 270 runs were scored. Woolpit’s 136 without loss was overhauled quite comfortably. Fran Stenning followed up some accurate bowling with 32 with the bat and Maisie Button also made 30. They will hope to end their season on a high with a win at Frinton. Gary Wiles

Helping Hadleigh families in need A number of individual citizens and churches have come together in response to growing anecdotal evidence of incidences of food and other poverty in the town to join forces with the charity FIND to do something about it. Families In Need (FIND) has been a registered foodbank since 1990, although it also provides non-food items to households as well. Alongside the town’s Coop, many churches already collect items for FIND which we deliver to their Ipswich depot. Now we have enough volunteers – although more are very welcome – to ensure that we can now pick up parcels from this depot and distribute them to families who need them here in Hadleigh. After a visit to FIND’s east Ipswich HQ by some of us in June, we were able to better understand how the operation works and feel that being part of the FIND network would be a sensible first step for us, rather than setting up a new foodbank from scratch. Hadleigh United Reformed Church has become a ‘referrer’ for FIND. We ourselves do not ‘assess’ any application – all we do is to gather some basic information for FIND to then contact those people. FIND operates slightly differently to many foodbanks, in that any judgements as to the eligibility for its services are made directly by their staff, particularly founder Maureen Reynel MBE. For more information and to register with FIND, please call 07964 497417

A charity event for Breast Cancer was held at Stoke By Nayland golf club on 1st August, which was well supported with almost 100 players. This event was run for the 2nd year in succession by Ray Harris and his team, they raised £6500, beating the previous years’ £4500. Ray lost his daughter to this dreadful disease in 2009 leaving Kate’s Son Joe who was 6 at the time. For many years Joe didn’t want to talk about his Mother’s passing, but in 2016 he surprised his family by announcing he was going to have his head shaved in order to raise money for Cancer research so that others shouldn’t have to lose their Mothers to the disease. He raised £1,000 and along with his family decided to start the Charity Golf day. Following this golf day, Joe surprised his family by watching videos of his Mother, this was the first time he’d ever asked since her passing. Cancer research will hopefully achieve its ambition of nobody dying of the disease by the year 2050. The winning team, pictured, with a score of 97 points were Bob Tokely, Don Wiggins, Ian Collett & Keith Hodgson, Ray & Joe are centre of picture.

Hadleigh Fishing Club Open Day held at Bullocky Fen on Saturday 4th August Hadleigh fishing club organise at least one open day during the year and this year was no exception. The event held at our local water, Bullocky Fen near Lower Layham and was well attended by enthusiastic adults and children alike, along with whole families who came to have a taster to find out what fishing is all about. They were treated to demonstrations by our members, of different techniques we use to catch wary fish. These included feeder fishing with rod and line, using a variety of baits and feeders. This was popular with the adults, as they could practice the casting, then simply sit in the chair and wait for a bite whilst watching the wildlife go about its daily routine. The younger generation were more interested in the relatively new techniques of pole fishing, which simply uses a carbon pole with varying strengths of elastics, which a line and float etc is attached to. This can be great fun when catching smaller fish on light tackle. All who attended hopefully took away with them some good memories of probably catching their first fish, but don’t stop there, why not join our club and do it every week? We only charge £2.00 for juniors under 12, with concessions for the over 65s and families. Please visit our web site (www.hadleighangling.co.uk) for more information. We also have a Facebook page. A big thank you to all committee and HADAS members who helped on the day, with special thanks to Mark Snowling and Kevin Wilding who also sponsored the event. Thank you also to Mark and Valerie Oakes for cooking the burgers and hot dogs, much appreciated by all on the day. Colin Hynard for HADAS

Victory for Hadleigh Tennis Player Jonathan Prosser from Hadleigh Tennis Club won the Men’s Handicap Singles (LTA rating 8.2 to 10.2) at the 125th Annual Framlingham Lawn Tennis Tournament. Jonathan defeated Martin Picker of Dedham 7-6 6-4 in the final. This is actually Jonathan’s second victory at Framlingham as he won the Under 16 Boys Singles way back in 1986. Look out the veterans around the middle of the century! Hadleigh Tennis players also performed strongly in the Ipswich & District summer leagues with the Ladies top of division 5 and the Men came a close run second in division 6. The Club’s existence was recorded over 137 years ago when it played one of its first matches against a team from Bildeston. In September the next round of this challenge will take place at Hadleigh. At the end of the month is the annual President’s Day which is a more light hearted competition for all members but keenly fought none the less. The are 3 floodlit all weather courts located on Layham Road next to the rugby club with “Club Play” sessions for members on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6.30pm to 8.00pm and Sunday mornings from 9.30am to 12.00 pm. The Thursday sessions are suspended through the Winter from late October to end of March but otherwise the hardy members play on regardless! You can play a few sessions to see how you get on before deciding whether or not to join. If you have young children who want to start playing there is an independent qualified coach who runs group sessions for children at the courts. If you are interested just come along to any of the Club Play sessions and have a go. If you would like details of membership please email: hadleightennis@gmail.com

Jonathan Lambert/Dave Lavelle. Tom King, Dave Lavelle, Jonathan Lambert and Nathan Willett Newton Green staged another successful golf week with 500 entries across seven competitions, including the hugely popular Jonathan Lambert Centenary Silver Salver. Once again the end-of- week, Saturday contest attracted around 130 entries, with former captain Dave Lavelle a popular winner. Lavelle again demonstrated his haphazard speech making capabilities, as he brought cheers and laughter to an unscheduled doubled act presentation routine with lady captain Lizzie Johnson. He had received the trophy from sponsor Jonathan Lambert, having won the event on count back with 41 Stableford points, his eight points from the last three holes helping him edge home ahead of Tim Harbord, with Robert Rush third on 40 points. The evening was given a glittering atmosphere thanks to the marque decorating skills of Kate Fraser, who also managed to extract a record fourfigure profit from the raffle organised by the ladies’ section. There was a very tight contest for the best woman spot in the salver, with Gwyneth Ferreira at the count back top of six contestants on 36 points. Thirteen-year-old Nathan Willett, with a handicap of 24, was the best junior with an impressive 39 points. Alongside the salver, the lower handicap players were also competing for the Carole List Goblet for the best gross score, with Tom King winning with a three over par 72. The week began in oppressive heat as nearly 100 contestants managed to survive the Tuesday morning Delaney scramble, but conditions eased to such an extent that by the end of the week competitions just managed to dodge numerous heavy storms. Once again, Dora George, who conceived the idea of the festival more than a decade ago and remains event chairman, piloted the festival to another successful conclusion. Results: Salver: 1 Dave Lavelle, 2 Tim Harbord, 3 Robert Rush. Goblet, Tom King. Best lady, Gwyneth Ferreira. Best junior, Nathan Willett. Delaney Scramble: Kevin Smith, Judy Donnelly, Frank Salt and Chris Williams. Stableford: Rob Bradbury, Andrew Johnson, Carol Durston and Roger Manby. Kiskadee: Margaret Hills and Steve Ranson. Three clubs/putter: Tony Mitchell, Andrea Thompson and Jim Devereux. Foxes and rabbits: Marilyn and Mick Mills. Cross country: Steve Knappet.

Suffolk Rockets Netball Club The summer is quiet for the club as we finished training in July and we resume in September. During the summer some of our current Junior players and some of our new players came together to play two friendly matches again Finborough Netball Club, it was a lovely evening and it was great to watch both games and see the new players in action. In our first game Finborough won a very even game 10-9, in the second match we played our older girls who took the win 23-1. It was good practice but most importantly it was a chance for all the girls to get together and start forming relationships with their new team mates which is so important in sports. Thank you to Finborough for hosting the games and we hope to have them over to Hadleigh in the near future. On 18th August we ran our annual Taster Session for Juniors. This year we also invited players going into years 5 & 6, as well as years 7,8,9 and 10. We had a huge response and altogether we welcomed 22 new players as well as 8 of our current players who came to train and welcome the new girls. For two hours we had fun playing fun warm up games, drills, invasion games and match play. Since then we have had most girls confirming they would like to join the club and play regularly in the Colchester League. If you would like more information regarding our Junior club please contact us on the information below. Our Adult players are having a break over the summer but will be back training on 12th September, we are always welcoming new Adult players of any experience and standard, most of our players started as 'back to netball' players who hadn't played since school, so if this is you don't let it put you off and email us for more information! Good luck to our two Adult teams playing in the Colchester pre season Tournament on 9th September. From May - August Suffolk Netball Performance Academies run their trials for the new season, 4 Rocket players made it through to the second trials which consisted of 4 further sessions to test their fitness, ability and coaching standard - we are absolutely thrilled to announce all 4 girls have been selected to join Suffolk Satellite Academies for the 2018/2019 season. Well done Lola Crawford, Heidi Marsh, Esme Mallett and Eloise Hayward the whole club is extremely proud of you and all you have achieved. We are looking for new sponsors for our u15 and u13 teams for the season, if you are a local business and would like more information please contact Hayley on the email address below. suffolkrocketsnc@hotmail.com. Badminton for fun Ever wanted a game or two of badminton but been put off by the overly competitive nature of league players? Then come along to the sports hall at Stowupland High School (IP14 4BQ) between 8 and 10pm on a Friday evening for a fun session. We have all ages, men and women, playing to a good standard but enjoying the chat between games as much as the games themselves. There are three courts, we don’t have a dress standard and it only costs £4 per session. Contact Kevin 01449 615136
