Ipswich Town Football Club teams up with Active Schools Ipswich Town Football Club has joined the drive to get more youngsters active, becoming the £80,000 Active Schools project’s first ambassador. Launched in July last year by Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils, in partnership with NHS West Suffolk and NHS Ipswich and East Suffolk clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) and supported by Active Suffolk; the three-year Active Schools project aims to increase the number of people taking part in sport and physical activity. Funded by an £80,000 investment – with £25,000 from each of the district councils and £15,000 from the two CCGs respectively, Active Schools will engage with 20 schools across Babergh and Mid Suffolk, with Active Suffolk already working closely with 15. Ipswich Town Football Club supports and advocates the project’s key aspiration to enable young people in Babergh and Mid Suffolk to lead an active lifestyle. Through their Community Trust, they will provide access to initiatives that include sport, education, community engagement and health, working with Active Suffolk and partners to maximise the number of opportunities for young people to be physically active. Jason Curtis, Head of Community at Ipswich Town Football Club, said: “We are delighted to support this programme which mirrors our own ambitions to increase physical activity in schools creating a stronger, healthier more active community as a consequence. “It offers us the chance to be able to encourage children to get active both within school time and when they play with us outside of the classroom providing extra-curricular opportunities from open access level to our academy.” www.activesuffolk.org

Moving in 2020? Don’t pay twice for conveyancing When you move home, selling and buying property, you will need to employ the services of a conveyancing solicitor to deal with the legal aspects of the transaction, for which there is a legal fee. Paying twice when transactions fall-through What many home movers don’t realise is that if your transaction falls-through, which happens for many reasons and with increasing frequency, you will still be charged by your conveyancing solicitor for the legal work undertaken up to the point the transaction fell-through. This means, you pay legal fees to your conveyancing solicitor for the transaction that fell-through and then have to pay them again for the legal work on the next transaction, which will hopefully be a successful one that goes through to ‘completion’. You essentially pay for your conveyancing twice. How common is it for property transactions to fall-through? Rightmove reports that nearly 30% of property transactions fell-through in 2018*, which is significantly more common than most people realise. Some commentators also believe the current economic uncertainty and slow property market may cause this percentage to increase as buyers and sellers become more cautious and riskaverse, making them more likely to pull-out of a deal. How to avoid paying twice for conveyancing The only way to protect yourself from the risk of paying twice for your conveyancing is to instruct a no sale, no fee conveyancing solicitor. Holmes & Hills Solicitors is proud to protect its conveyancing clients from paying twice by providing its No Sale, No Fee Promise as standard on conveyancing transactions**. Holmes & Hills’ No Sale, No Fee Promise means that should your property transaction fall-through, whether it be a purchase, a sale, or a sale and purchase, you will not pay any of the legal fee quoted to you. When you then find another buyer for your property, or you find another property to buy yourself, you know you have not wasted any money on legal fees on your first, failed transaction. Holmes & Hills clients also benefit from the firm's transaction fall-through rate being significantly lower than the 30% average reported by Rightmove. Why do property transactions fall-through? Property transactions can fallthrough for a wide range of reasons, many of which will be out of your control: Down-valuations - where a lender values a property lower than the purchase price. Seller or buyer changes their mind. Surveys - undertaken buy purchasers these can flag issues with the property. Disagreements between buyers and sellers. The Christmas Present Trust The Way Forward Dear Hadleigh, now that spring is around the corner (hopefully) we would like to invite all those who volunteered for us at Christmas, and anyone else who is interested, to a soiree in the Community Room at Hadleigh United Reformed Church, on Tuesday evening, 24th March at 7pm – we are providing drinks and nibbles. This will be an opportunity to see some of the photos of the event, have a look at the accounts and share with us ideas and suggestions for the way forward. Having run the event now for the last 5 years, we would like to share this task with like minded individuals, and to that end we are looking for at least three people to join us in organising the event this year. This Christmas Present Trust meal and entertainment is now well and truly a fixture of the Hadleigh year and by expanding the organising group, we hope to ensure that the event continues for as long as it is needed. We can honestly say that we have enjoyed every one of the last five Christmas Day occasions and we are sure we will do so again in 2020. If you feel you can help, or just want to know more about us, please come along on the 24th March. We would love to see you. Simon and Sarah Thompson

By Charmaine McKissock and Gale Pryor from H.E.A.T (Hadleigh Environmental Action Team) Growing numbers of children in the UK need support for their mental health, including depression and anxiety. Is it possible that our children may be suffering from a modern condition to which we need to give our full attention: Nature Deficit Disorder? This is the idea that spending very little unstructured time outdoors in natural environments, results in learning, behavioural, emotional and health problems. Humans are physiologically adapted to be active in outdoor environments - to walk, run, play, den, or obtain food/ water. But many children now feel alienated and unsafe in nature, as do some of their parents and teachers. Whilst glued to screens, or transported by car, they’re more likely to learn about exotic wildlife from a David Attenborough programme than take a walk in the park or woods. Experiencing nature on screen, without using all your senses, makes us less observant about the world around us, and dulls learning, thinking and coping skills. This is because excessive technology and stressful environments require a lot of effortful attention, affecting blood pressure, stress hormones, immune system function and mood. In parts of the UK, GPs can give Nature Prescriptions to their patients thanks to a pioneering partnership with the RSPB. In Hadleigh, mental health charity Suffolk Mind runs an ecotherapy allotment, aiming to gently increase activity levels. People learn about gardening and contribute to a thriving growing space that benefits everyone. Volunteers make friends and get support from other group members. Current research finds that it takes a full 120 minutes a week to get a dose of nature high enough to boost your health and happiness, regardless of your employment, wealth, ethnic group, chronic illness or disabilities. And there’s no need to go to the Grand Canyon or swim with sharks: just tinkering around in a garden can work. Ironically, one way to help children who are anxious about Climate Change might be a dose of green space. This month our Eco-Hero is 9 year old Sunny Nichols, who litter-picks along the Railway Walk. If she sees friends throwing litter, she calmly explains ‘why this is a bad thing to do.’ Tell us what you or somebody you know does to help the environment and you could be ‘Eco-Hero of the Month’: hadleigh.heat@hotmail.com

Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) a new service offered at Hadleigh Physiotherapy Does any of this sound familiar? • Feeling overwhelmed or lost • Loss of motivation or direction • Needing help with goal setting • Feeling stressed or anxious • Feeling a bit down or depressed • Having a phobia • Issues with a relationship • Reduced performance – in business or sport • Lacking confidence If so, NLP could help. NLP at Hadleigh Physiotherapy is hosted by Kerry of www.keep-well.uk. It is the practice of understanding how people organise their thinking, feelings, language and behaviour and how this influences their actions and well-being. Kerry sums it up as “a tool to help you unlock the barriers that are holding you back, giving you the freedom to become the best possible version of yourself”. If we break the name down, it means: Neuro – Your thinking process – the way you use your senses to understand what is happening around you; Linguistic – Your words – the way you use language and how it influences you and those around you; Programming – Your behaviour – the way you organise your ideas and actions which produce expected and unexpected results. Through NLP, we are creating new pathways in the brain, which will enable you to alter your perception, ability to communicate and respond to situations. There are numerous tools and techniques that can be used to get you thinking and no two sessions will be the same. NLP targets the subconscious - your lightbulb moment may happen there and then, but often it is more subtle and may occur days or weeks after a session. For example, when you notice that your reaction to a certain situation is different. For more information or to book, please contact the practice on 01473 810185

Darts at The Cock Inn, Hadleigh While many pub sports have been in decline over the years and some have even disappeared the exciting and skillful game of darts is still thriving within Suffolk. Hadleigh and its Dixon Dart League boasts a very competitive weekly dart competition, both with its winter and summer leagues and with teams representing not just pubs in Hadleigh town but in Biddleston, Hintlesham, Groton and Polstead. The Cock Inn at Hadleigh dominates the league with its four teams, The Cock, Dawsey’s Jets, The Cock Vets and The Cock Rebels. The only other pub with more than one team is the George, who compete with two teams. Dawsey’s Jets (named after the late team member Paul Dawes, who sadly died last year following a motor bike accident) won the summer league in 2019 and are currently topping the winter league, with The Cock Vets close behind and The Legion Loungers in third place. It’s interesting because the Dawsey Jets are the team with the youngest members (all over 18 of course) and are winning through against opposition teams full of more senior and long standing dart players. Why? Well maybe it’s the practicing. I know full well that Dawsey’s Jets often practice throughout the week. You know the saying don’t you? ‘Practice make perfect’! There is still some time to go before the championship is decided, but it looks as though Dawsey’s Jets are going to be very difficult to catch. The matches are played every Monday on a home and away basis. Don’t be afraid to come along and watch, its free and great fun. If you are interested in playing darts or are a beginner wishing to take up the sport, then why not come along to The Cock Inn’s ‘beginners dart nights’? It takes place in the lounge bar at The Cock every Wednesday evening, starting at about 8.00pm. Under the stewardship of Melvin Tilbury, who is also the secretary of the Dixon Dart League, Melvin organizes the night together with in-house competitions and its really is great fun. Singles, doubles, it’s a bit of a mix really, but thoroughly enjoyable. Those who play in the competitive dart leagues are not allowed to play, it’s for beginners or real novices only, so why not come along and have a go or even a throw. There are free snacks too and it’s a great place to meet new friends. Don’t worry if you don’t have your own darts, you can use ours. The Home Library Service let the library come to you Did you know, that, as well as being located on Hadleigh’s high street, we also offer a home library service? The Home Library Service is run by friendly volunteers who regularly visit people in their own home who are unable to get to a library due to mobility issues or disability. The Home Library Service volunteers deliver books, audiobooks and large print titles so no one has to miss out on the pleasure of reading - or having someone to talk to. The service is free and operates across Suffolk and the volunteers are reference and DBS checked. The Home Library Service is also available to care and residential homes as well as if you are at home recovering from an operation or illness. You can borrow several items at a time and it’s not just the books that are of benefit. Some of the customers the service visits may not see many people during the week so it provides much needed social interaction with volunteers happy to stay for a chat. Suffolk Libraries has volunteers looking for new people to visit in 2020 so if you or someone you know would benefit from this service, you can speak to your local library, emailhls@suffolklibraries.co.uk or call: 01473 351249 for more information. You can also refer someone to the service at suffolklibraries.co.uk/hls Hadleigh Library, 29 High Street, Hadleigh, IP7 5AG 01473 823778

As is usual a raffle was held and the magnificent sum of ÂŁ900 was raised which will be distributed to local charities in due course. Also present as guests of the Lodge were representatives from Hadleigh Swimming Club and Volunteers from Felixstowe Coastwatch who received donations to assist them in their work. During the last four years the lodge has made charitable donations totalling ÂŁ28,956 - in the main our support goes to charities within the immediate area. Our thanks to John Adams for his ‘Address to The Haggis’ which was much enjoyed as always by all present and of course not forgetting ‘Monarch of The Glen’ Peter Pryke whose playing of the bagpipes is legendary, well in Hadleigh at least! Brett Valley Lodge was formed some 26 years ago and currently has 58 members who come mainly from the surrounding area. Becoming a Freemason gives you the opportunity to meet new people, make new friends and provides the opportunity to expand your social life as well as that of your partner and family. We are open about our membership and we would be delighted to speak with you simply complete the contact form on our website. www.brettvalley.org.uk

Here at Zor Boutique we have been busy buying for the current season and the season ahead... We have recently received a large order of spring summer wear perfect for those of you with holidays abroad booked, or those of you planning ahead for the warmer weather. These pieces include the all new Brakeburn collection with one of them being the lovely striped cotton dress which has been very popular with our customers. Alongside the Brakeburn collection we have also received many different styles of dresses, tunics and tops made from cottons, linens and other light fabrics in a wide range of colours perfect for the summer. One of my favourite pieces for the summer has to be the handkerchief dresses in 10 different patterns. These are perfect for the warmer weather as they are loose and floaty, and can be dressed down for the beach or dressed up for parties and meals. And as an added bonus these items are fairtrade being made my artisans in India and Indonesia using sustainable materials. We have been extremely busy attending the trade shows in London and Birmingham, finding new stock for the shop. Including many new styles of jewellery with hearts, stars and abstract designs to complement our new summer clothing. We also ordered a large selection of the eco-friendly bamboo travel mugs and lunch boxes as well as the water bottles. These have been selling very well as sustainability is largely on people’s minds. We hope to see you soon in store to browse our new collections. 07969 525859 www.zoronline.com zoronline.sales@gmail.com Kersey Mill, Stone Street IP7 6DP Open Mon-Sat 10am to 4.30pm

HADS - Alice in Wonderland

Did you get a chance to see the HADS production of Alice in Wonderland? If you did, we hope you enjoyed it as much as we enjoyed bringing it to you. We're all having a little rest after all the hard work that went into our show. Until our next project that is! All on the HADS committee want to say a huge thank you to the support and interest Hadleigh town has given us,especially the people of The United Reformed Church for letting us use their beautiful church to perform in. Without their permission I don't know where we would've brought the show to Hadleigh. Also thank you to our sponsors, Suffolk County Council Local Budget, Hadleigh Town Council, Hadleigh Thrift Shop and East of England Coop & Steve Blake's Mower Servicing as well as all our advertisers in the programme. The thanks also carry on to everyone at Keith Avis for selling our tickets and advertising the event for us. A massive thank you to our dedicated cast members who have given up their Sunday afternoons to rehearse for the last few months, many of them are children who behaved so well waiting back stage for their moment to shine. We've seen a lot of new cast this year and have been overwhelmed by their talent and hope they will be back for future productions. Thank you to our wonderful audiences, who clapped along and laughed at our terrible jokes! It's always great as a performer to receive such warmth and appreciation, makes it all worth while. Remember its our 100th Birthday this year so look out for other events and appearances throughout the next year and hope to see many of you again. www.hads.webs.com

Jonathan Lambert Bespoke Jewellers & Goldsmiths Jeweller & Goldsmith, Jonathan Lambert, can trace his family history in fine jewellery back to Francis Lambert, a goldsmith in London from 1795. Interestingly, the family business which he now runs in partnership with his wife Yasmin, is not very different to the original business in London over 200 years ago. The Lavenham based business still designs and creates fine jewellery for discerning clients from all over the world and has a fully equipped on-site workshop for the repair and restoration of fine jewellery. Yasmin, who has a 1st class honours degree in Fine Jewellery from London’s prestigious Central St Martins, still designs fine jewellery in a time-honoured fashion, using watercolours to illustrate designs before showing them to prospective clients. Once approved, Yasmin’s designs are then passed to Jonathan who oversees their creation in gold, platinum or silver in the workshop. Jonathan, who is a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, a past Chairman of the National Association of Goldsmiths and an Honorary Life Member of the National Association of Jewellers, can also advise clients on the sympathetic restoration of antique jewellery and the adjustment, repair and remodelling of their treasured pieces. The couple, who also had a shop in Sudbury for 16 years until 2018, have built an excellent reputation for designing and creating fine jewellery, both in Suffolk and further afield. They have recently returned from a buying trip to Europe where they met with diamond and gem dealers from around the world to source loose stones for both stock pieces and commissions. If you would like to find our more, Jonathan and Yasmin are always happy to talk to customers about jewellery – it’s what they are all about. Help! After years of paying thousands of pounds into the coffers of Babergh District Council I asked for a small favour in return. In 1995 I placed a memorial bench dedicated to my first wife at the Station Road end of the Hadleigh Railway Walk. I am pleased to say that the seat has never been damaged and is often used by passers by. Trouble is, the tree (not protected) next to it has now grown high and attracts pigeons on toilet duty. I try and keep it clean. In August last year I asked Babergh to cut off a few branches, they replied “yes we will see to it”. At the time of writing (late Feb 2020) five months later, nothing!! So, do I stop paying my community charge or do I ask somebody to lend me a ladder and a saw? John Brown

Exams Made Easy Year 11 have recently taken part in an ‘Exams Made Easy’ training session. Of course, exams aren't easy, but students were shown some invaluable skills for helping them to revise effectively. The day included: planning and prioritising revision, memory techniques and the power of mind mapping. One student commented, ‘The day helped me realise that revision doesn't need to be difficult. It was nice there was an emphasis on the use of colour to help revise.’ During the evening, it was the parents turn. Parents found out what the students had done during the day as well as having the opportunity to discuss matters such as dealing with stress, how to support their children with revision and creating a revision environment. One parent said: ‘It has given me ideas and strategies to help my child to revise. I’m feeling more positive in being able to help!’ Hopefully the day has left students feeling better equipped to succeed in the summer.

Old Operating Theatre Trip Our Year 10 History students, as part of their GCSE course, visited the Old Operating Theatre in Southwark, London. Housed in the attic of the early eighteenth-century church of the old St Thomas' Hospital, this atmospheric museum offers a unique insight into the history of medicine and surgery. The students enjoyed a session on surgical procedure in the 19th Century, demonstrated by one of our own students as the 'patient!’ The students also enjoyed a walking tour around Southwark where they learned about the Cholera epidemic and the general problem of sewerage in 19th Century London. It was a lot more enjoyable than it sounds! The students gained lots of knowledge on this trip which they have been applying to their classwork.

Garden of Remembrance Hadleigh High School recently held a non-uniform day to raise funds to create a garden of remembrance located on the school site. The garden will be a quiet space, an area for students to reflect and remember loved ones. The garden has been designed by a group of Year 11 boys, one of which aspires to becoming a landscape gardener when he leaves school. In addition to the non-uniform day, these students also organised a cake sale. In total they hope to have raised in excess of £1000 towards this project. All monies go directly towards building the garden. Lego Robotics Our Year 8 Lego Robotics team recently went to RAF Honington to compete against ten other teams in the ‘Tomorrow's Engineers Challenge’ day. Activities included the team presenting their project, two attempts at the pre-programmed robot challenge, speed challenge, the robot presentation and finally a team challenge. Although they didn't come first overall, the students came away with a trophy for first place for their robot design and were fantastic ambassadors for the school. Kindness February is the month of ‘Kindness.’ To celebrate this, an assembly was delivered across year groups to highlight the importance of kind words and how unpleasant comments and words to someone can leave marks as illustrated in the short story read by Mrs Sibley, ‘The Nails in the Tree.’ Some form groups have also been writing little cards to teachers showing their appreciation and recognition of acts of kindness. Staff have also taken part in a Guardian Angel scheme where each staff member has been given the name of a secret colleague who they need to ‘look after’ for a week. Many students have been involved in surreptitiously delivering gifts ranging from chocolate muffins, Victoria sponge cakes, personalised mugs, stationery, flowers and even a treasure trail of chocolates. There have been lots of smiles and enjoyment in finding out about colleagues. German Conference Five students and I took a short drive to visit Farlingaye High School in Woodbridge to attend a German conference. We were given three 25 minute lessons, including a session from a Cambridge University lecturer on ‘The Fall of the Berlin Wall,’ a session on German music and also useful retrieval techniques such as delayed recall and dual coding. The trip helped us learn about German history and culture, and is a trip I would love to repeat. Written by Sid Watts

Always time for a Chin Wag - Gotelee Solicitors partner with Age UK Suffolk Gotelee Solicitors are delighted to confirm their partnership with Age UK Suffolk in 2020, across a series of activities including The Big Chinwag, Pop Up Chinwags and the charity’s annual Will Month scheme. The team at Age UK Suffolk provide a host of services to the elderly and family carers. Being a predominantly rural county, reaching out and supporting our elderly can be a challenge. There are 17,000 people in Suffolk aged 65+ who say that they are ‘often or always lonely’ and go for long periods of time without having conversation with others. Andrew West, Managing Partner at Gotelee comments “We have worked closely with Age UK Suffolk for a number of years, signposting families to their services and taking part in their initiatives. Many people prepare for retirement and later life by making lasting powers of attorney and Wills, which is absolutely the right thing to do. However, we meet many clients who are facing not only legal issues, but also more general, everyday problems associated with the challenges faced by older generations. We wanted to do more to provide support to those who feel vulnerable or lonely. Our partnership with Age UK Suffolk will help bring about more conversations and help others understand how to prepare for their later years, post-retirement. We encourage families and businesses to support this great initiative. Businesses, community groups and schools find the Big Chinwag a very enjoyable way to raise money for Age UK Suffolk. Gotelee Solicitors will be encouraging as many Suffolk based people and organisations to host their own Big Chinwag this year, as well as hosting their own “Gotelee Chinwag (with plenty of cake) in June. Jo Reeder, Head of Fundraising & Marketing for Age UK Suffolk said “We are delighted to be working with Gotelee through our Big Chinwag campaign. The message is clear – it’s all about encouraging conversation and what better way to do this than by having a cuppa and a piece of cake? To find out more about the services offered by Age UK Suffolk visit www.ageuk.org.uk/suffolk/our-services. Waking up with Spring Courses and activities at Orchard Barn With the snowdrops and crocuses waking up it’s clear that spring is making its way to us, and what better time to start getting out and about more. As the weather warms up this year’s courses begin at Orchard Barn, we have so many lovely things planned, and plenty more to be confirmed too. This advert is funded by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) for the purpose of assisting James Cartlidge MP in the performance of his Parliamentary duties. Printed by Keith Avis Printers, 68 High Street, Hadleigh, Ipswich IP7 5EF

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk Since being elected in 2015, I have been inundated by constituents exacerbated by the lack of rail ticketing options for part-time commuters. As such, in March 2016, I held my first adjournment debate on the subject of ‘Flexible ticketing’ where I was able to share publicly some of this correspondence. I read an email from Deborah of Sudbury who argued: “Flexible season tickets would encourage more people to work from home some days, which would reduce overcrowding on the trains, and would benefit South Suffolk, as more people would have time to spend their London wages locally. It is very old-fashioned to think that workers go to their office every day and we should not be penalised for flexible working”. I also read out a piece from a constituent called Russell, from Nayland, who had done the maths: “It is becoming increasingly common for people to work from home, yet we are still forced to pay the season tickets for the entire week, month or year. For me, that means paying for 365 days of travel, when in fact I only travel on 208 of these… On the basis of me paying £5,520 a year (i.e. £15.12 a day), this means I am really overpaying for 173 days a year – i.e. a full £2615.76”. Since the debate I have continued to beat the drum in Parliament, so I was delighted when the Transport Secretary, Grant Shapps, announced on New Year’s Day that his department would be trialling part-time season tickets. Better still, at his recent HS2 ‘Rail Infrastructure’ statement I asked the Prime Minister to go further and roll this trial out nationwide, and he replied that this was the Government’s “intention”. Of course, there may be a national financial cost of extending flexible ticketing, but I am convinced that this change would create new opportunities for local people to return to employment. By removing a financial disincentive to part-time commute to London or Chelmsford, where there can be a wider range of opportunity and higher wages, flexible ticketing could encourage residents to take advantage of opportunities they may otherwise have discounted.

Hadleigh Cycling On Show

Hadleigh Cycling On Show

28th March, Saturday 9.30 - 1 This is a cycling event for everyone. Young and not so young, fit and not so fit, the beginners and the experienced, for short and longdistance riders. If you haven’t got a bike or it’s stuck at the back of your shed you’re welcome to come along and we’ll help you get started. The show, at the Ansell Centre, will be opened officially by Steve Allman, Mayor of Hadleigh at 9.30. There will be stalls, bikes and information on cycling opportunities for you to sign up for. You can have a free bike check, practice changing an inner tube, buy second hand cycle clothing, check out child and adult electric bikes and sign up for a regular club or social ride. There will be a chance to enrol for the Junior Club which will start up again at the Primary School in April. The event is entirely free and the aim is to encourage as many people to get out on bikes this year. The message is “ride as much or as little, or as long or as short as you feel, just ride”. For new or old members of the Club, come along and pay this year’s membership fee (£12.50 individuals and £35.00 family). As well as the 50% off club kit offer, we are introducing a grant for members (up to £250) to promote cycling in Hadleigh and enhance the cycling experience of individual or groups of members. In the meantime, why not try our Sunday morning social rides from the George starting at 9am, weather permitting. Adults and “capable children accompanied by an adult” are all welcome. The distance is around 25 miles. Check out our Facebook page. Visit www.hadleighcyclingclub.co.uk or connect with the club via Facebook: Hadleigh Cycling Club @HadleighCycling

Ansell Memories Café Last November we were very grateful to be joined for the afternoon by our local WPCs Diane Porter and Sarah George. We had a good discussion around local policing issues as well as sharing some safety advice and enjoying hearing some stories about some of the more unusual things that have happened during their police careers. Most of all, as the picture shows, the afternoon was a fun experience for all involved and we thank Diane and Sarah for joining us. Having fun is always our main objective at the Memories Café. In addition to all the other wonderful benefits of attending including social company, support, physical and mental stimulation, plenty of cups of tea and a lovely hot dinner, the most important thing is that people leave with a smile on their face. And on the 19th March we will be lucky enough to be joined by our local Pop Choir which promises to be a great afternoon. Why wouldn’t you want to join us? We are at the Ansell Centre every Thursday between 11 and 3pm and can ensure you would be warmly welcomed.

Pause For Thought At the moment there seem to be lots of changes and unrest in the world, our country and locally. Some of these are good some may not be. In many countries there is conflict. In peoples lives there maybe heartbreak and sadness. We experience stormy weather. However, there are signs of hope. There are spring flowers opening in gardens that bring us hope of warmer weather and summertime. There are many people working for peace in conflict zones. There are also professionals and volunteers offering support and help for people going through tough times. Where else can we find hope in a changing and difficult world? In ourselves? In friends or family? What about God? The bible says, ‘God is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him.’ God offers hope to all in a broken world, to anyone who follows him. We had another good turnout (21) for our February walk around Lavenham. A number of walkers expressed surprise that they managed to complete the 10 miles without problem Our March walk on Saturday 14th will be a circular walk of 9 miles from the Alton Waters Visitor Centre, Holbrook Road, Stutton, IP9 2RY. We will meet up at the centre car park at 0930. There is a £3 parking fee at the centre that can be redeemed at the dining area. From the centre we will follow a counterclockwise route via Alder Carr, Queech Farm, Stutton Mill then follow the banks of the River Stour to Graham’s Wharf, then inland via Little Hall, Ray Tree Farm, Stutton Church, past The Royal Hospital School to Wall Farm Wharf, Holbrook Mill and, finally across the reservoir dam and back to the car park. A little bit of everything in terms of scenery! We should be back at the car park by 1330. If anyone is without transport it would help if you let us know via the website contact page so arrangements can be made if possible with someone leaving from Hadleigh. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground will almost certainly muddy or rough in places. We are still planning April’s walk but, looking a little further out to October, we have booked the Community bus and will organise a walk on the River Deben centred around the Ramsholt Arms pub. Space may be limited on the bus so please let Gerie, Hugh or me have a note of interest so we can gauge numbers . We don’t have a firm fix on cost at present but it will probably be less than £5 per head. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site. For further information about these walks go to www.hadleighwalkers.com, email us from the website contact page or contact Mike Keeling on 01787 210104 or 07483 887658

February’s meeting was well-attended by around 30 people representing various groups and was chaired by Steve Allman, the Town Mayor. The meeting began with updates from some of the groups represented. Councillor Kathryn Grandon, chairman of Babergh District Council, provided an update on the planned development of 600 homes off Tower Mill Lane, which generated a number of comments and questions about infrastructure, green space and sports facilities. Cllr Grandon is also holding a Charity Ball on 16th May and everyone is welcome to attend. Visit Hadleigh reported a successful AGM and said there is an increased interest in public art being placed around town following the introduction of Sherman the Sheep. The group continues to raise the profile of Hadleigh and list local events on their website www.visithadleighsuffolk.com Tidy Town Volunteers continue to average two picks a week and will be taking part in the national clean up during March and April, with extra picks during that time. Volunteers have also started an allotment and are preparing it for planting. Hadleigh & Boxford Patient Participation Group reminded us about booking immunisations 4-6 weeks before travel and shared details of a mini art exhibition taking place inside the surgery. Hadleigh Food Bank reported helping an average of ten families per week and said a list of items required is available on their Facebook page. Their first fundraising quiz is being held on 7th March and they are due to start coffee mornings at the Leisure Centre from 28th February. The group agreed chairs and speakers for the year’s meetings, which include presentations by the Recycling Team and Screen Suffolk. Andy McMillan, Hadleigh Town Council’s new Town Council Manager, gave a presentation on his first month in post and current priorities, which include recruiting a full complement of staff, reviewing office processes, developing the Council’s strategy and recommencing work on the Neighbourhood Plan, which was stalled a couple of years ago. The meeting ended with a group activity, facilitated by the Mayor, in which we discussed the opportunities and challenges facing Hadleigh and explored how the various groups present could help. Challenges included increasing access to historic buildings, such as The Guildhall, overcoming loneliness and isolation, supporting young people and sustaining the High Street. Opportunities included developing empty spaces, increasing tourism, maximising green space and developing community events. Those present agreed that it had been a positive, useful, enjoyable and informative activity. The next meeting takes place on Monday 9th March at 4.15pm at Hadleigh Pool and Leisure. Everyone is welcome to attend

The Ups and Downs of Grief It is a common perception that grief is a linear process of moving through various stages, starting with shock and denial, and finally moving into hope and acceptance. In practice the experience is often much more complex with our feelings propelling us backwards and forwards like a roller coaster. This fluctuation in mood can even happen during the space of a day and many people mention evenings as being a time when a sense of aloneness is felt more acutely. Triggers may also be a challenge to us. Birthdays, anniversaries, films, music, holidays and places are among the most common types of events and experiences that suddenly bring back a memory of times we spent with loved ones and affect us emotionally. In our groups we share such experiences and challenges and find that by expressing how we are feeling and by supporting each other we lessen the intensity of our pain and our feelings of aloneness. If this blog is meaningful for you in connection with a bereavement, be it recent or further back in time then why not come and join a Suffolk Bereavement Support group? Our afternoon group is held in central Hadleigh on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month from 1.30pm-3.00pm and our Capel St. Mary group meets in the early evening on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month from 6.30pm-8.00pm. Each meeting finishes with refreshments and informal chat. We would love to hear from you if you would like to join us at any time. ‘Boule-in Marvellous!’ Fête du Printemps: Saturday 28th March until Sunday 5th April 10am - 6pm daily “Yes it’s absolutely marvellous” beams Cathy Bullen when asked about her flourishing French Lifestyle business The Boule-in which is hosting the first of its 2020 seasonal decorative fairs Fête du Printemps from her barn and garden in Bildeston. “We know we’ve been so lucky - we love what we do and we love it even more seeing customers and friends having a wonderful experience when they visit us.” Certainly there’s something for everyone to enjoy when they visit this uniquely delightful Fête - not only is it a veritable treasure trove of French furniture and collectables ranging from antique to a vintage/retro vibe but the diverse programme of Special Event Days appeals to adults and children alike. “We are particularly thrilled to be hosting Woolwich Contemporary Editions, a selection of original prints currently touring the country: Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair is the largest of its kind in the UK and is a great advocate for encouraging ownership of beautiful yet affordable pieces of art for the home. This is something on a small scale that we do here at The Boule-in,” says Cathy “We really want people to fill their homes with authentic pieces - practical yet beautifully crafted - and to enjoy using them in their daily lives. It’s very much about sustainable living - buying beautiful things that you want to keep.... simple luxuries and conscious consumption! Of course, being springtime we also have the great outdoors in mind so the gardeners among us will be heading to our wonderful bulb and plant stalls in our garden filled with a new array of French garden furniture and Gardenalia.” “Finally we have an Easter delight in the form of local florist Helen Newman who will be giving an Easter wreath and flower crown workshop on Sunday 5th April as well as a ‘La Chasse aux Oeufs’ when children can scamper in the garden with a Provençale basket to fill with hidden eggs and traditional French bells! We’ve tried really hard to make it a great day out for everyone” smiles Cathy. It certainly sounds like she has! www.boule-in.co.uk. Tel: 01449 740359 77 High Street, Bildeston IP7 7ER

Fidelis Activity News A Pool for All The Hadleigh Pool and Leisure Centre was the venue for a talk by Tracey Loynds and Kate Germany. Tracey expanded on the owners, Abbeycroft Leisure’s remit for the venue which offers both sport and social facilities for the community. Members also saw the plans for the new state of the art pool which should be opening in autumn 2020. To effect the changeover and keep the overall costs down, it will be necessary to close the pool for a while which is understandable but tricky for keen swimmers. Our thanks to Tracey and her team for providing delicious refreshments to accompany an interesting, informative presentation. Club Jolly As the group opted to postpone their Christmas meal to a less crowded month a ‘January Jolly’ at the Hintlesham Golf Club was enjoyed instead. A welcome drink on arrival was followed by a tasty two course meal with all (L to R) Kay Whittle, Lyn Oxford, the trimmings but minus Julie Davies at Hintlesham Golf Club the ever faithful turkey. Our own room and round tables greatly added to the ambience and the comfort of any straggling male golfers. Lunch Bunch This month’s foodie gathering was at the Corncraft Tearoom within the Bridge Farm Barns complex. Delicious freshly cooked food and a shopping opportunity was much appreciated by all diners. Charity Support The group made a donation to St Elizabeth Hospice, Ipswich in memory of the late Lin Slaughter who was Vice President and active member for many years. The total amount collected in her name was £971.23.

Hadleigh & District Garden Club Monday February 10th 2020: In the 1980's there was a programme on the TV called 'All muck and magic', it was probably one of the earliest programmes to promote organic gardening, with an emphasis on healthy soil. Organic gardening nowadays has a much higher profile for very good reasons. So it was good to get advice from master composter David Golding ( a change from our original speaker) at our meeting in February. David visits schools, community centres and garden groups across Suffolk on a voluntary basis promoting the value of making and using good organic compost, which adds fertility to the soil, improves soil structure and reduces the amount of waste going to land fill so reducing our carbon footprint. Fifty/fifty is the key to success - 50% green waste such as veg peelings, garden trimmings, grass cuttings and annual weeds and 50% brown waste such as card, boxes low grade paper and woody stems. The mixture needs aeration and heat to help the process of decomposition. The resulting compost can be used as potting compost or a mulch to improve the soil. David also gave some great advice on making leaf mould and the benefits of having a wormery ( see photo) to make a good liquid feed. If you would like further information and advice he recommended www.gardenorganic.org.uk and www.getcomposting.com where you can purchase a compost bin for very little outlay to get you started if you would like to give it a try. Despite all the rain we have had this winter and storm Ciara arriving the day before our meeting the competition table was full of beautiful hellebores in all colours, shapes and sizes. There was a tie for first place so congrats go to Carole and Maureen. Monday March 9th 2020: The March meeting is our AGM and the business of the evening is usually got through nice and quickly so we can enjoy a cuppa and a good natter afterwards. There is still a competition though - 'A small posy of spring flowers', as well as the plant and produce table and the raffle. There is no entrance fee for this special meeting, so it might be a good time to come and find out more about the club. We meet in the dining room of the Town Hall at 7.30pm, we hope to see you there. hadleighgardenclub@gmail.com

Hadleigh & District Flower Club For the first meeting of 2020 after a very stormey weekend the club enjoyed the 3 demonstrators that had been blown in – Chris, Pauline & Jayne with the title “If music be the Food of Love”. Music played between arrangements, with the audience supplying the name of the singers/group name. a very enjoyable start to the year. March 10th we welcome Pat Barton from Attleborough “Where in the World” so please come and enjoy a evening of Flowers, Fun and Friendship at Hadleigh URC, The Market Place. Doors open at 7.00 for a 7.30 start. See you then.

Polstead Gardening Club Meeting Tuesday 17th March at 7.30 pm - Polstead Village Hall, CO6 5AL All welcome: members free, non-members £5 Darren Lerigo from Modern Mint: Too Hot, Too Dry After moving from Hampshire to Essex 5 years ago, Darren noticed how different the climate was. Wondering how to grow plants when some parts of Essex are drier than Jerusalem, and with scientists predicting it will get hotter and our summer's even drier, he began to look into how he could help the garden cope. This talk is about what to do when the sun shines too much and the rain comes down too little. It also looks at the problems caused by too much water at any one time, and what your allies will be when growing plants and vegetables in such tough conditions.

Down to Earth ...with Dave With the very unpleasant windy weather we have been having in February not much has been possible outside, having to spend more time indoors has given me the opportunity to catch up on some reading. One of the books I was given at Christmas was an RHS book entitled 'Tales from the Toolshed', this is the history and use of fifty garden tools, not everyone's fun reading but I have always had an interest in old tools. One chapter is about hoes, this reminds me of the first hoe I acquired, when I left school back in the fifties my first job was on an arable farm, one of the jobs we were given was to manually thin out the sugar beet plants, this was a back breaking job using a hand hoe. As I did not have such a tool I was dispatched to the local blacksmith, a Jack Gibbs of Navestock I think, to have one specially made for me, it was a small square bladed tool with a swan neck and a wooden handle, what it cost or who paid for it I don't know. What I do know is that I still have this hoe and use it frequently on the allotment, not bad considering it must be well over sixty years old, like all of my tools it gets a regular clean, sharpen and oiling. Lots of people have a favourite tool that was their fathers or even their grandfathers, use them with respect and pride. I do think some of the old tools are the best, although stainless steel spades, forks and trowels cannot be beaten. With the strong winds we have had some damage was to be expected. On the allotment the home made net cover for the brassicas was virtually destroyed and will now have to be replaced, this was planned for this year anyway. Various lids and circles of netting were returned to their proper owners. The shed on the allotment is a metal one so did not suffer any damage. The one in the garden did not fare so well with the felt being ripped off the roof, another job for when the weather improves. The heavy winds act as mother nature's way of pruning and usually do not do much harm, just make sure that any tree ties are in place. If we do get a dry sunny day then the greenhouse can be given an airing, this will help to keep down grey mould, be sure to close up any ventilation in mid afternoon to conserve the heat of the sun before nightfall. As usual do not be in a hurry to plant out anything, we can still get a sharp frost and lose the lot. One exception are bare rooted plants like roses, these are OK provided that the ground is not frosted. We recently bought a special bare rooted rose called 'Just Joey' from Cants of Colchester, what an interesting place that is if you just want roses. That's all for this time Dave

Imagine! It’s Saturday, 16th May and after time spent at the Show, you are now rejuvenated, with a glass of bubbly in your hand, in a beautiful garden leading down to the river. The Deanery Tower is your setting, surrounded by friends… It’s lovely… but that’s just the start and it’s time to move on from the Deanery Gardens and wow! How amazing does St Mary’s Church look with stunning table settings and the beauty of the building enhanced with special one-night-only lighting! There follows a splendid three-course dinner (by top Suffolk caterers), dancing to a fantastic six-piece band and enjoying a fabulous atmosphere at what promises to be a great ball. It will be a wonderful evening, a night to remember. The committee and I would love to welcome as many residents from Hadleigh and surrounding villages as possible to join us at the ball. Support your town and support our charities… and let’s have a good time. As Chairman of the Council I can choose a charity to support and I selected Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance. I am using the event to raise funds for Hadleigh Guides and Hadleigh Sea Scouts too. I do realise the price of tickets does make attending a ball prohibitive to some people and also it is not everyone’s cup of Prosecco, but hopefully we will raise a good sum for my charities while having a fun evening. So, put 16th May in your diary and weather permitting, we will have drinks in the Deanery Gardens and the Ball itself will be held in St Mary’s Church. Many of us take the beauty of St Mary’s Church for granted – but you will be amazed to see it transformed into a stunning setting, lit up inside with coloured beams of light, sparkling tables dressed for a banquet; just the setting for a Black and Gold themed Black Tie Ball. We are very grateful to Revd Jo Delfgou and his team for the use of the Church and we are mindful of the Church’s primary use. Following a delicious dinner, there will be an auction run by a professional auctioneer to raise funds for the charities and then dancing to the most amazing band, The Dukes of Havoc. There will be Chairmen, Mayors and other dignitaries coming from all over East Anglia, but I would love to see Hadleigh people there, so please join me if you can. There are a limited number of tables - £550 for tables of 10. There is also the opportunity of individual places at £55 a ticket. To buy tickets by BACS or for information, please contact: civic@baberghmidsuffolk.gov.uk or call 07860 829538 / 07860 829509. Or payment can be made by cheque made out to: Babergh District Council, and sent for the attention of: The Chairman’s Office, Babergh District Council, Endeavour House, 8 Russell Road, Ipswich IP1 2BX, along with the names of the guests if you know who you are inviting. We’ll have a ball while raising money for good Hadleigh causes. I hope to see you there

Kersey Mill Newsletter During February, we have forged ahead with work to reinstate the three pairs of stones on the water-driven Hurst Frame. The bed stones have been levelled up and their bearings completed, along with the curbing and meal spouts. To assist with levelling, the stone bearers have been refined by splitting them horizontally. The new beech wood for re-cogging the crown wheels to the stones has been machined. Stone furniture is also Kersey Mill’s Hurst frame, being built, based on photographic evidence, photo taken in 1960 which indicates an octagonal wooden stone case and wooden horse, three new sets of stone furniture have also been required. On the parallel engine-driven cast iron Hurst Frame, the circular metal tuns will be refurbished and re-assembled. This means the date when Kersey Mill will be able to produce flour again is becoming ever closer! Restoring the stone furniture has been a time consuming process, however it is essential for the machinery to be operated correctly and, more importantly, safely. An article featured in a recent Suffolk Mills Group Newsletter describes how a local nineteenth century post mill at Bird’s Farm, Bildeston was completely destroyed by a fire in just 90 minutes as a result of machinery that overheated, caused by friction. Post mills are the earliest type of European windmill and constructed of timber. The whole body of the mill houses the machinery, which is mounted on a single vertical post around which it can be turned, to bring the sails into the wind. Unlike the mill at Kersey, there was no water source Restoration work, reinstating nearby and despite the parish having its own the stones fire brigade, no attempt was made to extinguish the blaze. It was reported the tenant of Birds Farm, who had been grinding beans all day, had left the site unattended some 45 minutes prior to the fire’s outbreak. Fortunately the brick built roundhouse was saved with the assistance of neighbours. The site in Bildeston is now occupied by Taylor Made Joinery and Manor Road. Open Days at Kersey Mill for 2020 have been published on the events page of the website www.kerseymill.net If you would like to arrange a group visit on a different day, please contact: 01473 829317. Save the date for Drive it Day, Sunday 26th April! As we head into spring, plans get underway for the Mill’s most popular event in the calendar, to be held on April 26th from 10am - 4pm. Once again we are expecting a fantastic level of support with a huge range of classic and vintage vehicles being exhibited by their proud owners. Display Vehicles enter FREE of charge, so why not bring your pride and joy down to Kersey Mill to mark the start of the season? There is also an opportunity to view the Mill and enjoy a walk around the beautiful gardens. Takeaway food and refreshments, including a licensed bar and BBQ will be provided by The Miller’s Kitchen and several of the commercial businesses including the craft studios and shops will also be open. The Venue at Kersey Mill will also holding a ticketed event - an afternoon tea with entertainment from 2 pm, please visit their website www.thevenueatkerseymill.co.uk for further details. All public will be welcomed with FREE entry for pedestrians and £5 for public parking and the proceeds will be donated to the Mill’s Restoration Fund.

I recently visited HADS and received a behind-the-scenes tour of their pantomime, Alice In Wonderland (oh yes, I did!). HADS, the Hadleigh Amateur Dramatic Society, is celebrating their 100th anniversary in 2020 and I was so impressed by how much work they put into their pantomime, which was held at the United Reformed Church in February. The performers look fantastic, but a lot of hard work also goes into making their costumes, setting up the stage, installing a professional sound system, getting the lighting and projection just right… With a cast of more than 40 and as many more helping behind the scenes, it’s a real community effort and I was delighted to present HADS with a cheque following their successful application to Hadleigh Town Council’s community grants programme. Earlier in the month I attended the AGM of Visit Hadleigh, another recipient of a community grant, which is working hard to promote Hadleigh and attract visitors to the town. Their pop-up shop on the High Street last year attracted hundreds of visitors and their website receives thousands of visits every month. We also heard from the owners of Benton End House, who announced they are working with The Garden Museum to bring Cedric Morris’ former home and art school to life. Carolyn (Deputy Mayor), Andy (Town Council Manager) and myself recently met with Mark Brennan from Hadleigh Royal British Legion to discuss plans for a number of commemorative in Hadleigh this year, starting with a VE Day tea party at the Town Hall on Friday 8th May for anyone born on or before VE Day, which is being supported by Hadleigh Town Council. VJ Day on 15th August will be a more sombre affair as it marks Hadleigh’s darkest day, in which 15 townsfolk were killed in battle in Gallipoli. On 14th June, Hadleigh Town Council is hosting a parade through the town by 7th Battalion REME, who have the freedom of Hadleigh and are celebrating the 30th anniversary of their arrival at Wattisham. This is a major event, which takes place shortly before Hadleigh hosts the county’s Armed Forces Week launch on Thursday 25th June and Royal British Legion’s own celebration on 27th June. Keep an eye on our website and noticeboards for more details. At the time of writing, I’m due to attend a meeting at St Mary’s Church about supporting young people. I met with Reverend Jo Delfgou recently to discuss the rise in antisocial behaviour in the church and the vicinity. As a former Youth Worker, I’m conscious that we do not tar all young people with the same brush and I’m pleased to say that the majority of young people I encounter in Hadleigh are positive, well-behaved and make an important contribution to our community. I’m interested to explore how we can work together to better support and engage our young people and will report on the meeting next month. Finally, following the results of the recent by-election in Hadleigh North, I’m delighted to welcome two new Town Councillors, Frank Minns and Gordon McLeod. They join the Town Council at an exciting time as we continue with our programme of improvements and I’m looking forward to working with them and benefiting from their skills and experience. Don’t forget you can keep up with the work of Hadleigh Town Council via our website http://hadleigh.suffolk.cloud, where you can also view minutes from the various council and committee meetings, and follow Hadleigh Town Council on Facebook (HadleighTC) and Twitter (@HadleighTC). Finally, if you’d like the Mayor and/or Deputy Mayor to visit your community group or event, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Hadleigh Choral Society Spring Concert Dramatic and majestic in its sound, the organ will feature prominently in three choral works at Hadleigh Choral Society’s upcoming Spring concert. All are invited to attend as we perform a series of musical depictions of biblical psalms, requiem mass, and heartfelt poems. Latin, Hebrew and English plus a bit of Gregorian chant harmonisations will all be on the menu as the Choral Society sings Chichester Psalms by Leonard Bernstein, Requiem by Maurice Durufle and Five Mystical Songs by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Directed by Christopher Phelps, the choir will be accompanied by professional soloists (Mezzo soprano Nina Bennet, Counter tenor Tim Travers Brown, and Baritone Owain Browne), along with Organist Tom Bell. Harp, cello and percussion instruments will round out the musical ensemble. Join us for this evening of celebratory praise through these well-loved choral classics, two of which made their debut appearance at such esteemed venues as Chichester and Worcester Cathedrals. Concert details: 28th March, 7:30 pm at St Mary’s Church in Hadleigh (IP7 5DT). Tickets are £15 (under 25s free) and are available from the Hadleigh Choral Society www.hadleighchoralsociety.org.uk, The Idler bookshop in Hadleigh (37 High Street), choir members, or on the door. Spring is in the air at Hadleigh Market Despite the stormy weather over the last couple of weeks, I am seeing signs of spring all around; daffodils are opening, leaves are unfurling and the days are getting lighter and slightly longer. The arrival of spring always brings optimism to Hadleigh Market which, in the midst of winter can feel very desolate and bleak despite the incredible support of our amazing loyal, weekly customers. It is now that we start to get more enquiries from interested stallholders, inquisitive to know about how they might be able to join this wonderful weekly market and so over the next few months we hope you will enjoy meeting new traders. Recent visitors to the market will have met Chris of Azure Wood Fired Pizza. He has a very smart trailer set up which contains a wonderful, portable pizza oven and from 9am every Friday you can enjoy crispy based, wood fired pizzas straight from the oven. Chris is working really hard to build up a pizza following in Hadleigh so if you are a pizza fan and you’d like to order in advance, please contact him and arrange a time to pop down and collect from the market. His number is 07502 164676 or better still, drop him an email at chris@azurewoodfiredpizza.co.uk We’ve also got a new refillable stall starting in March which will be a huge asset to the market. Dates are in the process of being confirmed so please keep an eye on the Hadleigh Market Facebook page for further information. So let’s look forward to longer, warmer days and the fabulous laid back, café vibe this weekly market now has in the spring and summer where local people, young and old get together, to have a coffee, to sit in the sunshine and to chew the fat (or maybe pizza!) If you haven’t visited recently then pop it in your diary - every Friday, on the Market Place, IP7 5DL. At last the sun! For however short a time, lets enjoy the blue sky and the welcome warmth in the stable yard. My photos this month show boys from Chalk Hill School in Sudbury enjoying their Thursday morning at the Centre. You’ll see they like chatting to the horses’ heads. Funnily enough none of the lads is keen to pick hooves, groom, or sweep up poos whilst visiting us! Part of their therapy is to learn responsibility, gentleness around the ponies, good manners and listening skills. No swearing allowed, always thank the helpers and your own horse after a ride and of course if you don’t listen to instructions you can come a big cropper. Their Coach and our chairman, Jan, stands no nonsense and she and her team thoroughly enjoy helping theses boys to a better attitude and building confidence in their own abilities. When all six boys turn up it’s a great ride to watch. I like seeing six of our live herd in the arena together, with competent riders aboard, no side walkers, and Jan putting them through their paces. One photo shows the whole ride setting out to enjoy a road hack, something our able bodied riders enjoy enormously. Shelley is such a great place to spend time in; even though I never get out of my ‘room’ I hear all about it and can guess our lads enjoy being out of the arena for a change. So do their mounts! Out on the roads we have to have our volunteers dressed in high viz jackets, obviously. At this time of year that’s no problem, but in high summer something about the jackets attracts black flies, and they get covered in the little perrishers. So Spring weather is just perfect for us all. Don’t forget we have 11 animals here all producing a wonderful by-product for gardeners, and if you’d like some for your compost heap, you know where we are! Bring your own bucket, and make a small donation to the Centre and the horses will keep on producing: win win! Well, behind all the fun for our clients there is the vast body of volunteer work that keeps us all going. The fundraising team would like you to join it on Saturday April 25th for a ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire’ charity quiz night at Polstead Village Hall. Tickets, which include supper, available from Chris Southgate on 58aldham@gmail.com for £15 and you can now pay on-line! See, we are moving with the times at last. Forward planning has to be a part of corporate enterprise, even here, so we’d love to welcome anybody with board room expertise to meet our trustees and discover if there could be a role for you here. I, Ebony, would personally welcome you. Website: www. shelleyrda.com Telephone: 01473 824172

IPL at French Complexion IPL is the most effective treatment for skin discolouration, reducing brown pigmentation, sun spots, rosacea and unwanted hair. More known for the hair removal side, the treatment is completely safe. The light is absorbed by pigmentation of the hair and quickly turns to heat which then kills the growing cells that make the hair. Although the light is attracted to dark hair, at French Complexion the IPL on offer also treats red and light hair. Treatments for hair removal are once per month and a course of 6-12 is recommended. IPL Rejuvenation also uses the power of light to reverse the visible signs of ageing. By treating the deeper layer of the skin, collagen is stimulated and improves the texture with a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles. Throughout the month of March, French Complexion is offering considerable discounts on either selected hair removal treatments for men and women or skin rejuvenation. All consultations are £35 but this is redeemable if course of 6 booked. If you require further information please do not hesitate to call. Hadleigh Healing Society The first signs of spring have appeared with snowdrops, aconites and catkins all helping to cheer us after what has been a very dreary, grey and wet winter. There have been very few bright blue sky days which lift your spirits. The news on TV and radio has been depressing with so much devastation to wild life in Australia, sickness in China and surrounding countries. Many people ask WHY. If you look back through history there has always been times of tragedy but with the resilience of the human race we manage to overcome it and hopefully learn how to prevent it ever happening again. If you you need someone to listen, share your concerns and how it affects your life please allow our qualified, registered healers to help. This is all done in complete confidence. Please telephone (answer machine) 01473 823282 or log onto www.hadleighhealingsociety.org or visit our Hadleigh Healing Society Facebook page. We are holding one of our popular Clairvoyant Days on Saturday, 18th April between 10am – 4pm. There will be two mediums who can give a 20 minute private reading for £15. Dear Sir, I refer to Mr Southgate’s letter in regards to parking at the Magdalen Road car park, and agree with his point of view, although I must say that the ticket machines do fail from time to time. I also agree fully with Mr Southgate’s point of view of parking on the High Street, I have only seen a ‘Temp’ police officer once, stopping people from parking on the single yellow line, informing them to move on and to find parking elsewhere. The young female officer was met with a barrage of verbal abuse, punctuated with dirty looks and questions as to why shouldn't they be able to park there? I also notice, that cars that are parked on the road outside of peoples’ houses with parking facility, which are empty, thereby causing at times, a bottle neck of cars trying to get through, when just 18 months ago this was not the case. Lastly, why dont the police occupy a perfectly abandoned police station (Lord knows there's more people now living in Hadleigh, and more crime taking place than since they left). L. Dillon

Dear Sir, The Town Mayor’s (Cllr Allman) reply to Jan Byrne’s email stating that “minutes of council meetings held since May 2019 are available on the council’s website” is, at best, being rather economical with the truth. I have today (2nd Feb) been on the council’s website and of the 8 full council meetings (7 normal and 1 extraordinary) since May 2019, only 4 have minutes available on the website (50%), of the 4 Council Matters committee meetings only 3 have minutes available (75%), of the 3 Town Matters committee meetings only 1 has minutes available (33%) and of the 6 Market Feoffment Charity committee meetings only 3 have minutes available (50%). This gives a grand total of minutes being currently available on the Town council website for 11 out of 21 committee meetings i.e. just over 52%. I have also noted that whilst there are monthly Schedule of Payments details for each month of 2017/18 and 2018/19 on the website, there are no schedules for any month since the current council took over in May 2019. I am therefore forced to agree with Jan Byrne that this is also not my idea of Openness and Transparency. Brian Loftus

Dear Sir, About five months ago, when to clearing Himalayan balsam, I needed to check if any was growing near a footbridge over the River Brett. Access to this footbridge is to climb over a stile near to 135 Benton Street, Hadleigh and walk along a footpath. Stepping on the lower timber step of the stile I discovered the step was so loose that it moved sideways and my feet slipped off this step as it moved sideways. This stile, placed there as access to the footpath is and still very unsafe as the bottom step some five feet long and nine inches wide moves sideways if stepped upon by persons wishing to mount the stile from either side, that is to say to get onto the footpath or leave the footpath and into Benton Street. My contact with Suffolk County Council was made immediately after my experience in about September 2019. They responded, after visting Benton Street that there was nothing wrong with the stile but in any event it was not their responsibility to maintain it. Since then my approaches to Suffolk County Council have been in vain. I walked along Benton Street as recently as Friday 14th February 2020. The lower step is still as unstable as it was one five months ago. Surely Suffolk County Council has a responsibility to ensure that this unsafe stile, the means of access to a public footpath and right of way, should not be left to remain in its present unsafe condition. A sign should be placed to draw walkers' attention to the unsafe step and steps taken by the County Council to make sure the unsafe stile is repaired without further delay. I will again contact the Council on this subject. John Cunningham 01473 822198

Dear Sir,

When is our ‘Open and Transparent’ Council going to inform the residents of Hadleigh of their discussion about the future of the Guildhall and the Council moving out of the premises. I understand that Councillors have already viewed the premises vacated by Abbotts and are also voicing the possibility of moving into Barclays or Partridges. Why? The Town has been ‘managed’ for some 600 years from the Guildhall premises, why has it become unusable for this current council? So far in this financial year the Town Council has not paid a penny for their use of the offices and the rooms that they now use for meetings. It would appear that they are not prepared to pay for their accommodation in a premises which the people of Hadleigh already own, but they would be prepared pay rent, or buy (with what?) alternative premises. Unfortunately the Town Council did not open the Charity’s e mail site from October until recently, consequently it has been almost impossible for members of the public to make enquiries and to make future bookings of rooms thus stopping any income for the premises and with the doubts thrown by the Council that they might sell the property it is surely doubtful if people would make bookings for events and wedding until the situation is clarified. In their deliberations what is this Council planning for the Guildhall premises? A group of buildings which most Towns would be proud to own and care for. I hear there is talk of renting out the property, selling the property or giving it to some organisation such as the National Trust or Historic England. The residents of Hadleigh first bought the premises in around 1438 and after the Crown had sequestered part of the complex in the 1500’s the ‘chiefe inhabitants of Hadleigh’ bought the premises back again. At the moment the property is being used for the purpose for which it was built, the management of the Town and for public use according to the needs of the time. Should we not be consulted on the future of the Guildhall Complex? Are we prepared to let the Town Council sell ‘the birthright ‘ of our town? Jan Byrne

“One of the ways in which St Mary’s stands out is its Christian commitment to providing exemplary pastoral care and concern for every individual within this inclusive family community…”

“Every child is expected to do well, underpinned by the belief that all children can achieve.”

“Christian values…are explicitly taught and rewarded, resulting in excellent relationships and behaviour.”

Dear Sir,

On Saturday 15th Feb I popped into Greggs for breakfast on the way back from a jog with my husband. My contactless bank card wouldn’t work and a kind stranger paid for my breakfast. I would like to thank this kind man and let him know that I made £10 food donations - a fiver to cover his generosity and a fiver to match it. Sam Rope

Dear Sir,

Thank you to everyone who donated money when Anita Young and I collected for the WWF-UK Australian Bushfires appeal for only one hour on Saturday 21st January. You very kindly raised £118.90 which was gratefully received by WWFUK. Thank you to Michael Bridge (accountant) who signed off my forms for no charge and an anonymous coin collector in Layham who took the Bulgarian Lev off my hands and replaced them with UK pounds. Thank you to Babergh District Council who granted me the licence. Angela Wiltshire

Letter from Layham www.layham.org

Layham Parish Council The main points discussed at the parish Council meeting of 29 January were: • Public Forum Steve Laing explained that Hadleigh First Responders were aiming to raise funds to purchase a small 4x4 to replace their old vehicle, which would be more appropriate for the rural area they covered outside Hadleigh; the cost would be in the region of £10,000. First Responders provided an essential service for more than 9,500 residents and in the past year had attended nearly two hundred 999 calls. It was agreed to discuss a possible donation from the Parish Council at the February meeting. • District Council report With regard to the issue of council tax fraud, Councillor Ward said Cabinet had approved the adoption of the Citizen’s Advice Bureau Tax Protocol; with effect from 1 April 2020 the council would have the option to issue an initial penalty of £70 to anyone failing to declare changes in their circumstances affecting their entitlement to discounts, exemption or a reduction. Council tax was set to rise by £5 per year; council house rents would also be increased. • County Council report Cabinet had approved the budget for 2020-21 and it would now be presented to full council on 13 February. The budget included an increase of 2% for adult social care and an increase in council tax of 1.98%. Council was currently looking at the impact of the increase in the national living wage. The consultation on the future of Children’s Centres had started. With regard to the proposed Ipswich northern bypass, Councillor Jones said there was a strong business case for this, but it would have to be supported by development; the two district councils at either end were not in favour of increased development. A decision would be taken at the February Cabinet meeting. • Suffolk 2020 Fund This new fund had been announced in the local press in December 2019. Councillor Jones said the budget would need to be approved first and the fund was likely to be launched in early March. Bids would require the support of the appropriate Cabinet member. It was agreed to defer this item to a future meeting once further information was available about the process. • Speeding The update from the working party was noted. Councillor Paton would represent Layham on the speeding working group being set up by Suffolk CC - the first meeting of this group would be on Friday 7 February. It was noted that representation on the new group did not preclude the PC continuing to explore various options. • Emergency Plan The training session for ELVs held in December had gone well, with 25 people attending. The recent heavy rains had led to flooding in some areas of the village. It was agreed that all members would forward information on flooding issues to Councillor Curran so that a log could be kept. • Wildflower bank As agreed at the November meeting, Councillor Woods had written to the Cabinet Member for the Environment at Babergh DC about a grass bank where the owner of the neighbouring house had cut it back too early in the season, thereby destroying wild flowers. It had been confirmed that the bank was owned by Suffolk CC; it was therefore agreed to ask them to ask the houseowner to leave them to cut the bank later in the year. • SCC Community Self-Help Scheme It was agreed unanimously that the most appropriate agreement for Layham was the one ‘for community volunteers working in the highway’; the agreement was signed by the Chairman. A working party would meet to identify possible works to be carried out; recommendations would be brought to the May meeting. • Annual Spring Clean The annual Spring Clean would take place on Saturday 7 March 2020. • Hydrant markers A parishioner had drawn attention to the number of damaged and missing hydrant markers in Upper Layham. The Clerk would contact the utility companies. An otter in the Mill Pond Tanith Laing spotted an otter enjoying the turbulent water in the Mill Pond In January. Many sightings have been claimed, but a hurriedly taken photograph gives us an image, whilst a bit like the Loch Ness monster in its graininess, nevertheless seems to confirm that we do have otters in the River Brett again. It is worth keeping your eyes open as you walk over the Mill bridge – there are kingfishers to be seen as well if you are lucky. Red Kites over Layham We are used to seeing and hearing buzzards over Layham – now we can spot Red Kites as well. This photograph was taken in February by Nigel Pye over Lower Layham and seems to show a dark colouring. When the light catches the bird at a different angle it can be seen to be a rusty colour. It is easily identifiable by its forked tail.

They are cut alternate years to stimulate growth. Basically, the more they are cut the thicker they grow. Some of you may remember us cutting the hedges near the mill right down to the ground (coppicing). Go and look at them three years later and apart from some shrubs that are in the shade they are thick and healthy right down to the ground. W are experimenting with one stretch at the far end of the field by ‘laying’ it. That is an alternate method of stimulating and thickening low growth. Watch to see what happens. Layham Playgroup We have had a fairly relaxed term, enjoying home comforts such as cooking soup and cuddling up in the calm corner with a book or two. We thoroughly enjoyed watching the birds visit our garden and eat from our home-made bird feeders, meaning we have been able to learn some new bird names. The Robin and the Blue tit were very regular visitors. Towards the end of the half term we looked at families and people who we love and care for to coincide with Valentines day! After half term we are very lucky to be exploring some Forest school sessions with one of our lovely parents who is qualified in leading Forest schools. The sessions will be a fantastic opportunity for children to achieve and develop confidence and self-esteem through hands-on learning experiences in the natural environment. Date For Diary: Lucky Dip Family Bingo… Saturday 28th March at Layham village hall, 4pm start for eyes down at 4.30pm. Finezza Pizza will be supporting our event in helping us with supper! Stoke-by-Nayland WEA is holding its AGM on Thursday 2nd April 2020 in Stoke-by-Nayland Village Hall at 7.30 pm This will be followed by a presentation entitled Undiplomatic Episodes by Martin Berthoud As told in his book of the same title ‘Undiplomatic Episodes’ is the story of adventure that is unlike any existing stories of diplomats. Following excitements during his school, university and Army days, Martin Berthoud embarked on a life as a diplomat, travelling all over the world to exotic locations. such as Ulan Bator in Outer Mongolia, as well as the Philippines, Iran, South Africa, Finland, Australia and Trinidad and Tobago During this time Martin experienced moments of severe danger – he was working in former Yugoslavia when Serbian bombs were falling, he was charged by a rhino in Africa and fell down a mountain precipice in Venezuela, as well as escaping the snakes of Australia and the tarantulas of Tobago. But there was serious diplomatic work to be done too, which culminated in him being knighted by Her Majesty the Queen. Martin will be exploring the importance of his career and reflects on the rich variety of experiences that his role afforded him and the beautiful countries and cultures he immersed himself in as a result. Following national service as an officer in the Bedford and Hertfordshire Regiment, Martin joined the Diplomatic Service, eventually becoming British High Commissioner in Trinidad and Tobago. Martin was knighted on the Royal Yacht in 1985 and was the director of the Wates Foundation until 2000 before retiring. All past, present and future members welcome to this FREE lecture

French’s Care Haven It has been a busy time at French’s over Christmas and the New Year with our move back near Hadleigh. It has taken months to repair and prepare the new grounds for our animals to be safe in and for our animals and equipments to arrive and has taken every penny we had to do so. On the weekend of 28th-29th December we moved in at Castlings Heath and all went well. I have to say stress wise it was something I do not want to do again in a hurry, that’s for sure! Thank goodness for the help of our volunteers, Dr John Flathers, John Purser, his friend Mike, Ken and David. Their hands on fixing repair and replace, time and energy has been a life saver for our Charity and they have all been amazing, along with the support of Charmaine. Helping and becoming involved in a positive way for a good cause like French’s which combines the care of animals and the care of people, whilst being outside in a lovely environment with wild life around, is something that more people should do. It can only be a plus in my book, as it helps people of all ages with their physical and mental well being, while working in a beautiful natural environment. I urge others who have some time to come along and join us on our volunteer day Wednesdays. On our list of volunteers needed is someone who could help us with any fixing of equipment, someone who is hands on and not frightened to get stuck in, as they say. We are trying to raise the money for a composting toilet for our Costa one of our cheeky Donkeys volunteers, so far we have had £400 donated in grant aid from Boxford & Groton United Charities and we have raised £200 through donations, we now are left to raise £600 to reach the amount needed for our toilet. If there is any way you can help with a donation or by holding, organising something for us like a quiz, dance, curry night, or something else, we would be most grateful to hear from you. You are welcome to roll up your sleeves and help with some Poo picking in our donkey and pony paddocks and if you would like, give one of our ponies a brush over and some TLC. Please call and make an appointment to visit or arrange to come along on our volunteer day Wednesdays. We have a Go Fund Me page, so any donations to help would be very much appreciated. https://www.gofundme.com/relocation-for-charity Volunteers, sponsors and fund raisers needed Please contact: Jann on: 01473 833944 / 07747 755556 - Email: jann.turner@hotmail.co.uk

Dieting Excuses It’s always easy to find an excuse for gaining weight - it’s my hormones/metabolism, I’m big boned, or even, my clothes have shrunk! For many of us, it’s simple – too much of the wrong foods and not enough exercise. We all lead such busy lives and rather than walk even the shortest distance, we automatically jump in the car, often eating on the hoof. Mostly that means high fat, high carbohydrate and high calorie foods. These highly processed foods have poor nutritional values so we’re likely to end up overweight and possibly malnourished. This in turn could lead to health issues affecting us for years to come. It’ll creep up on you - you catch sight of yourself in a shop window, or a photograph, and realise you’ve gained two, three stone or more. You may have been through a stressful period (the stress hormone cortisol encourages the body to hold onto fat) or are in denial and ignoring it, hoping it’ll go away by itself. The idea of losing excess weight seems too daunting. If this sounds like you, THE 1:1 DIET by Cambridge Weight Plan can help reset your approach to food, but the best thing is, you’ll have your own private support* group (your Consultant) who will help you decide which plan is right for you and has the knowledge & experience to encourage you all the way through to goal and beyond – helping you maintain your success long term. Independent 1:1 DIET Consultant Val Lord has maintained her own weight loss since 2008 and has over 11 years’ experience helping hundreds of people reduce their weight & improve their health. THE 1:1 DIET has several different plans to suit just about anyone and I have 11 years’ worth of tips & tricks to help you all the way to goal and beyond – helping you maintain your success long term. Cllr Mick Fraser - Suffolk County Council Babergh District Council – Hadleigh South Budget 2020 Following its approval, Suffolk County Council (SCC) will increase its spending powers again this coming financial year, particularly in Children’s and Adults services where demand continues to rise year on year. In 2020/21, the council’s budget will rise to £556million which represents an increase of £37m (7.1%) from 2019/20. Children’s and Adults Services represent around 75% of SCC’s overall spend. This year’s budget is based on a 12-month financial settlement from government, rather than the usual 3 or 4-year agreement offered. Due to this 12-month settlement, we lack the longer-term certainty needed to deal with the large departmental budgets that we manage, including Children’s and Adults Services. SCC has therefore taken the measured decision to raise council tax by 1.98% and implement a 2% rise in the Adult Social Care Precept which is ring-fenced for use within our highest demand service. What does this mean for us in monetary terms? The general Council Tax element covering SCC services for a Band D dwelling, will rise to £1,224.70 with the Social Care precept for the same Band D increasing to £118.91. These figures will be in addition to the District and Town Councils, and Policing precepts. As well as addressing the need to maintain funding for key services, SCC will invest an additional £3.5m into one-year programmes, including the Suffolk 2020 fund (£3m) and a Highways Investment Fund (£500k). The Suffolk 2020 fund will be used for projects that can deliver a real difference for local communities. To qualify for the fund, projects must link to one of the themes which helps the council address the climate emergency it has declared and improves Suffolk for all residents in years to come: Projects must relate to: Carbon reduction; Carbon offset; Road safety; Natural environment; Built environment; Innovation; Use of technology. Each project must offer a clear return on investment through positive economic, social or environmental impact. I will be able to put ideas forward on behalf of the town to seek the sponsorship of a cabinet member for consideration. The £500k Highways Investment Fund has been announced to refresh road markings and tackle broken or dirty signs around schools in Suffolk. This extra funding has been focussed on improving the safety of pupils and parents traveling to and from our schools. It will be used to compliment the road marking renewal programme, which is taking place as part of the move of Civil Parking Enforcement (CPE) powers. My monthly surgery will be held on the third Saturday, 21st March 2020, between 11am - 12pm in the Sharron Elliott lounge of the Royal British Legion Club, George St. Should you need to speak to me about an issue, then please contact me at email: mick.fraser@suffolk.gov.uk or mick.fraser@babergh.gov.uk; Tel: 0793 551 2591; or facebook: @mickfraser4hadleigh. News from Whatfield School

Hadleigh Foodbank Quiz!

Our brilliant school will be 160 years old on the 29th February 2020- leap year day! We will be celebrating with a Victorian School day, complete with Victorian lessons, food and punishments! The school was built by the church for the local community and its first teacher was Miss Payne. I wonder what she would think of some of the lessons we do in school today. Technology means that now when Oak class are studying Egypt they can look at the pyramids through Google Earth or in maths can play Mathletics across continents against different children. I wonder if Miss Payne would recognise the school grounds. We are often told that Whatfield CEVCP School has one of the best views of a school in Suffolk, and since we are on the same elevation as Wattisham airfield this could be true. We are certainly in awe of some of the lovely sunsets and sunrises we get. Pupils at breakfast club were treated to this beautiful sky last week… Whatfield pupils were certainly excited to have a visit from our local farmer, Oliver Pratt, and his tractor before half term. The tractor was brought it into school as part of an education initiative of Suffolk farmers, and our pupils were fascinated to hear about how it is used on the farm, as well as getting a chance to sit in the driving seat! It made us think of Spring, and we are currently planning the planting we need to do around school and on the allotment. Our minibus has been in constant use, as we have taken part in many festivals and tournaments, and pupils love being given the opportunity to ride in it. It makes getting out and about a great deal easier, and on some occasions we have been able to fit a team from both Whatfield and Bildeston in it. Older pupils attended the swimming gala and athletics in Hadleigh recently and next month our youngest pupils will be taking part in forest schools activities at Bildeston Primary school. Oak class were thrilled to be given the opportunity to meet Tim Peake at the Science museum in London recently. One of our pupils was the first to ask him a question, and we found out a lot about his adventures as an astronaut. He is a great ambassador for Science and we hope some of our pupils will follow in his footsteps! As part of the event we were given a pass to the Launchpad exhibition, where there were plenty of interactive science displays to try out. We also enjoyed the journey to London, which was partly on the minibus and partly by tube. This was all part of our exciting adventure. We always have lots of exciting activities to look forward to, and as ever, if you would like to have a look round our lovely school you are very welcome. Please do telephone 01473 823 309 or email admin@whatfield.suffolk.sch.uk to make an arrangement to meet us. Lynne Golding, Headteacher www.whatfield.suffolk.sch.uk

Work to build a new swimming pool at Hadleigh Pool and Leisure will enter its next construction phase this Spring. Babergh District Council working with its partner Abbeycroft Leisure, is investing £2.4m with £200,000 of funds provided by Hadleigh Town Council and a Sports England grant (£150k), to build a new swimming pool at Hadleigh Pool and Leisure. The project to create new and modern swimming facilities in the heart of Hadleigh is well underway, now reaching its next exciting phase in construction. All existing facilities including the current pool have so far remained open and unaffected during most of the works to keep disruption to a minimum, however, to enable final preparations ahead of its demolition later this year, the current pool will close on Friday 20 March. The closure will allow the new pool to be connected to the plant room and a link corridor between the buildings to be constructed. Hadleigh Pool and Leisure’s other spaces and activities, including the gym, group exercise classes and the community and social rooms will continue to remain open throughout the works, allowing customers to stay active. The works, being carried out by Rose Builders, include; New pool with five 25 metre lanes, Disabled access to the pool via easy access steps and handrail or via lift, Changing Places toilet and shower facility, Sauna, Spectator seating and Access through to the existing changing facilities, refurbished in 2010. The old pool will then be demolished towards the end of the project once the new building has been connected to the existing centre. By re-landscaping the former pool area into park land, the build will result in no net loss of open space, with the new pool expected to be complete in summer 2020. A design for the sunshade which will be located at the front of the new pool is also currently being created by local artist, Jo Chapman working with local community groups. Cllr Derek Davis, Babergh District Council’s cabinet member for communities, said: “It’s exciting to see the new pool at Hadleigh really start to take shape to provide new community leisure facilities in Babergh. This work takes a huge step in helping our residents of today remain healthy and active, as well as ensuring that future generations can enjoy our leisure facilities over coming years - taking an important step towards achieving the aims set out in our Leisure, Sport & Physical Activity Strategy. While we appreciate any closure can be challenging for residents, closing the pool is an essential step to be able to connect the changing rooms and plant to the new building, enabling us to deliver the new facilities Hadleigh needs – much like the gym, it will be a little short term pain for hopefully, long term gain that benefits everybody.” Tracey Loynds, Development Director for Abbeycroft Leisure, said: “The new pool at Hadleigh Pool and Leisure is coming along fantastically well, and we can’t wait for our customers to be able to enjoy the new facilities. This is obviously a huge project for us and for the people of Hadleigh, which we hope will support the community to get more active. As exciting as this project is, we do understand that any closure can be a challenge for customers. So while we bring the new pool to life over the next few months, we have put a number of measures in place to keep disruption to a minimum. For example, anyone with a swimming membership will be able to use the Kingfisher Leisure Centre - subject to normal public swimming times - and can also upgrade their membership free of charge to access gym and fitness classes for three months. And from April to June, Swim School members are being offered an alternative dry-side programme at Hadleigh for a reduced monthly fee. Alternatively, they can choose to temporarily have their lessons at Kingfisher Leisure Centre as well as access any public swimming sessions free of charge during the closure.” From 20 March, customers can find their nearest pool at the Kingfisher Leisure Centre, Sudbury with a timetable available on Abbeycroft Leisure’s website. Details of other pools managed by Abbeycroft Leisure can also be found here. Customers wishing to find out more about Swim School arrangements and the dry-side programme should email swimacademyhpl@acleisure.com or contact their local reception team. Temporary closures of the footpath between Tayler Road and Stonehouse Road/George Street during the works will continue to be kept to a minimum.

The DIY Deli Smoked White Fish Essential equipment A cold smoke generator, A container with airflow from the bottom and adjustable airflow at the top; this can be anything from a cardboard box with holes in and a beer mat & paperweight to adjust the single exit hole at the top to a bbq or purpose made smoker, Fish pliers, Scales capable of weighing small quantities, A container made of glass or food grade plastic, around 3 litres capacity Ingredients 2 kg filleted cod, haddock, hake or pollack, ½ - 1 litre cold water, 150g sea salt, 150g soft brown sugar, 4g freshly ground black pepper, 1g allspice, 1.5g ground ginger, 1.5g garlic granules, 12 whole cloves, 3 bay leaves (crumbled), Maple, apple or cherry wood dust Method 1. It is unusual to find boneless fish fillets unless buying skinless loins; there will normally be a row or two of pinbones that will come to light when running a finger against the grain; once located draw each bone out and discard; if you don’t have fish pliers tweezers can work but you need a grip like a vice. 2. Weigh out all the dry ingredients and dissolve in ½ a litre of water 3. Introduce the fish to the container and cover with the brine; you may need to add more water to ensure the fish is completely covered; if so stir to distribute the ingredients evenly. 4. If the fish is at all buoyant introduce a saucer and a glass paperweight to ensure it is all submerged. 5. Place the container in the refrigerator for 6-8 hours. 6. Remove the fish from the container; wash and pat dry with kitchen paper. 7. Place the fish on a rack with a tray beneath and return to the fridge to dry overnight. 8. Load your smoke generator with wood dust - maple for a light smoke flavour, cherry for a stronger flavour; avoid oak and ash as these woods will overpower the fish. 9. Cold smoke for 4-6 hours, according to taste. 10. Return the smoked fish, on a rack and leave to settle for around 2 hours. It is now ready to use. To serve: best steamed, with new potatoes and spinach. Storage: freeze on day of production; ideally vacuum bagged.

Rotary Review Christmas Collections: A further acknowledgement is due as this missed last month's article. A big thank you goes to Press Gang for cleaning the Father Christmas outfit FOC. The Club is very grateful for their generosity! Club Matters: District Governor, Jonathan King, paid a visit to the Club and chatted very informally to members about any matters which they cared to bring up. Particularly he explained a number of different ways of organising Rotary Clubs to suit members requirements rather than members fitting in to a rigid format. Breakfast clubs, satellite clubs and E clubs were mentioned. Members have much more flexibility in organising their club with informality being the keyword. The Rotary website both District and National covers all aspects of membership for anyone who may be interested and ,of course, you may also visit your local club which is a mine of information. Enquiries and visits are always welcome. The last duty of the D.G. was to present long service Certificates to a number of members. 25 years certificates went to Ian Burne, Barry Chaplin and Alan Williams whilst 40 yr certificates were given to Derek Cranston, the only founder member who has completed 43 years, Geoffrey Cooley, David Stokes and Terry Wiles.Three members were present to receive their award and the rest will be presented as soon as possible. Membership: At the same meeting two visitors attended to find out more about Rotary and it is hoped that they learned enough to encourage them to come along again. A further prospective member is due to visit at the next meeting. As mentioned earlier anyone who would like to meet members and find out more about Rotary is welcome to come along to a lunch. Just contact David Stokes 01473 827226 by 7th March to attend the meeting on Tuesday 10 March. The Club meets at the George Hadleigh on 2nd Tuesday and 4th Thursday of every month 12.30 pm for lunch at 1.00pm

News from Kersey School Squirrels (Reception) and Hedgehogs (Years 1 and 2) Our topic this half term has been toys. The children have enjoyed learning about old and new toys. Even getting to make their own toy at a special toy workshop. Getting to use drills, glue guns and hammers to create. Well done to the children for their sensible behaviour and engagement while creating. They also enjoyed making bird feeders and taking part in the RSPB bird watch. Badgers (Years 3 and 4) We have had great fun this term in developing our knowledge of the Ancient Egyptians. We have started to design of own canopic jars and finding out how mummies are made. We never knew it took such a long time! We enjoyed our trip to Colchester Zoo and used it to write some fantastic pieces of writing. We have also been developing our fractions knowledge in maths, we been speaking lots about cake and pizza! Owls (Years 5 and 6) Owls class have been busy as usual this spring term. In January on a cold winter’s day we went to Colchester Zoo. It was rather chilly! Some highlights included seeing the baby white rhino and seeing the tigers, giraffes and zebras. The zoo staff taught us about predators and prey. Thank you to Kersey School ‘Friends’ for enabling us to go on our lovely trip. We have enjoyed our English story/novel Pax by Sara Pennypacker. This is the story of a young boy Peter and his pet fox Pax. He had to leave Pax behind in the woods due to the war, now he has run away to try to find him. We have been writing predictions, diary entries and writing in the past tense. We have enjoyed it very much. By Imogen and Eva. If you would like to know more about Kersey school or would like to arrange a visit please ring the office on 01473 823397, email: admin@kersey.suffolk.sch.uk or visit our website: www.kersey.suffolk.sch.uk

I don’t know who Ciara and Dennis are but they made a dreadful mess in the garden. Mum was nearly blown over when she went out to check the kennels and stables. The dramatic storms may be a distant memory now but our volunteers are still repairing the damage. It’s been a rough year so far.Apart from battling the elements, we lost dear old Peg, one of our Kune Kune pigs. She and her lifelong pal, Bob, arrived a few years ago after their owner died. Sadly Peg became ill recently and on the morning of her demise, Bob was laying by her side with his head laid across her. As you may imagine, a few tears were shed that day. I also suffered a much smaller loss when the Vet removed three of my teeth. It can’t be my fault, although every time Mum tried to clean them I bit her just to let her know they were still there. Perhaps I should have let her clean them. We have lots of bargains ready for our £1 Sale on 14th March at Newton Green Village Hall, CO10 0QS. Don’t miss it, if only for the delicious homemade cakes! Which reminds me, it’s nearly dinner time! It’s so cold, even the cats are staying in and taking over our dog beds. Stoke by Nayland Ladies SbN Ladies Captain, Jane Golding, has chosen The Alzheimer’s Society has her nominated charity for 2020 The first of two charity talks took place on Thursday 13th February. A Nearest the Pin and Longest Drive competition was run by Deb Howlett in the simulator just before the talk, taken from a Abu Dhabi golf course, which proved to be popular with all, including one of our eldest ladies Lilian Osborne taking part, she had never used one of these before, so it was quite an experience – certainly looking like warmer and drier weather than we have currently here! Well done to winners Nearest the Pin Susan Swan and Karen Lewis and Longest Drive Corinne Jackson. Musarra Gray from the Alzheimer’s Society gave a very interesting and informative presentation which made for good talking points afterwards and focussed us all for raising funds for this worthy charity during the year. Bookings for the simulator can be taken at theSbN ProShop. Earlier in the day a few of the ladies braved the elements properly outside the Simulator room, playing a 9-hole Blue Tee competition on the Gainsborough Course. Barbara Jones won with a marvellous 28 points, with Lesley Hitchcock coming second with 24 points.

Suffolk Rockets Netball Club On 8th February we entered two u13 teams into the OBH annual Tournament, our teams did amazing, Cosmic Rockets (made up of u13 u12 and u11 players!) done really well and got into the semi finals where they came up against our second team Luna Rockets (u13 and u12 team), Luna managed to get the win, Luna went unbeaten all afternoon but lost in the final to OBH1. Every player played so well, our fantastic WD/C/GD Lavinia managed to catch the eye of the organisers and won overall Player of the Tournament, congratulations to Lavinia! Our fantastic u14 East Regional Team finished their league on the 2nd February, the girls managed to finish in a very impressive 3rd place. This was our first season playing in Regional netball and to play in Division 1 and finish in the top 3 is an incredible achievement something we never expected. The girls are a credit to the club. Suffolk Rockets adult teams continue to strive in their divisions in the Colchester League, we love seeing the passion, drive and enjoyment the ladies have every time they step on court. If you are thinking of trying netball or coming back after some time out please do get in contact, we promise you will love it, we have sessions to suit everyone!
