Suffolk law firm, Holmes & Hills Solicitors offers a Will writing service which provides couples with a saving of between 16% and 21% on legal fees, when making Mirror Wills at the same time. Why make a Will at all? Quite simply, if you do not make a Will the law says who inherits your estate. Most people assume that everything would pass automatically to their partner but this is not necessarily so. Your estate may pass to the person or per-sons you would not want to inherit. Making a Will ensures that the people you want to benefit when you die receive your estate. Couples often wish to receive advice as follows: • How to plan for future care needs • How to provide for children and grandchildren • Provide for children from a former relationship • How to update an existing Will • What steps they should take if choosing to leave out a beneficiary from their Will • How to set up a trust • How to protect your contribution to the purchase price of a property when you live with someone else* • How to give away an inheritance in a tax efficient manner** If you have children from a previous relationship: Making a Will is very important for couples who may have children from previous relationships and want to ensure that their money will pass to their own family. This can be a sensitive issue between couples – but it doesn’t have to be so. It is possible to draft a Will making sure that your spouse/ partner is provided for in the event of your death and ensuring that ultimately your family will inherit your estate. No better time to make a Will – save up to 21% Married couples and long-term couples save between 16-21% when making Mirror Wills, with the exact saving being subject to the complexity of the affairs. There really is ‘no time like the present’ for you and your partner to make your Wills. What is a Mirror Will? If you and your partner wish to make Wills, that are in the same terms, these are called ‘Mirror’ Wills. Each Will is a separate legal document but the content is identical and ‘mirrors’ the other. These Wills often provide that the estate of each individual is left to the surviving spouse and then to other beneficiaries on their death. Make your Wills To enquire about making your Wills, call Holmes & Hills Solicitors in Sudbury, on 01787 275275. *Declaration of Trust **Deed of Variation Couples save 16%-21% when making Mirror Wills at the same time

The Porch Project, which supports young people in and around Hadleigh, has been selected as the Charity of the Year by Frost & Partners Estate Agents in Hadleigh for 2020. Each property instructed for sale in 2020 by Frost & Partners raises £20 and every sale that completes will raise a further £20 as we aim to raise in excess of £3,000 throughout the partnership. Frost & Partners, which specialise in the sales and lettings of homes in the local area has committed all its annual fundraising efforts to help the charity. The Porch Project will continue to increase awareness and engage with young people locally throughout 2020. Neil Parker and Helen Kebby, Directors at Frost & Partners said: “We are delighted to have agreed to support and work with The Porch Project for 2020. We have been impressed with the hard work and results achieved and believe that it is very important to continue working with and helping the young people in Hadleigh and the surrounding area.” The Porch Project was started in 2009 and engages with local young people between the ages of 11 and 20 years. It began when young people gathered in St Mary’s Church porch because they had nowhere else to go. Instead of asking them to move on, they were invited into the church and offered somewhere safe they could regularly meet and socialise and so the Porch Project was born. The Porch Project aims to support young people’s physical, mental, social, spiritual and educational well-being. The project currently engages with over 450 young people in Hadleigh and the surrounding areas through its social activities, learning and support programmes, school visits and street work. Hadleigh Society’s Noel Turner Award 2019 The Noel Turner Award was established in 1987 to commend building works within the Hadleigh area sympathetic to or integrating well with their surroundings, that display a high quality of workmanship or that are an example of good practice or excellence. At their meeting on Wednesday 4th December 2019 The Hadleigh Society presented two Noel Turner Awards, both for East House in George Street in acknowledgement of the excellence of the recent restoration of this significant Hadleigh building. The first was to owners Richard & Ruth Abel for commissioning & ensuring the highest of standards in the work involved and the second to Jason Thompson in recognition of the quality of the craftmanship in the construction of the property’s boundary walls. Each received a handsome certificate and a year’s free membership of the Hadleigh Society. Presentations were made by Margaret Woods (Chair) and Roger Kennell (an acknowledged expert in brickwork). This was the last Hadleigh Society meeting to be held upstairs in the Old Town Hall. It has been a lovely backdrop for our events but from now we will meet downstairs in the Dining Room which we hope will be accessible to more people.

A Big Thank You from The Ansell Memories CafĂŠ

Everyone at the Memories CafÊ would like to thank the Big Lottery for providing funding for our brilliant CafÊ organiser, Sue, for another year. We would also like to thank the Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance, Churches Together in Hadleigh, St Mary’s Friday Coffee Morning, the Choral Society, Hadleigh Wives and the Foresters Friendly Society for their generous donations to the CafÊ. Without these gifts and many hours of time given generously by our volunteers, it would be difficult to keep the CafÊ running. We are delighted that the CafÊ is going from strength to strength and pleased that we are able to provide friendship and support for a growing number of people. The Memories CafÊ meets every Thursday in the Ansell Centre any time between 11 am and 3 pm. It is open to anyone who would like company and friendship, including those living with dementia and their family and friends. We enjoy conversation, quizzes, games, singing, craft and many other activities – all of which are voluntary. Chatting over a cuppa is compulsory! A reasonably priced, home-cooked lunch is also available prepared by our lovely cook, Val. Research has shown that loneliness is more detrimental to health than obesity and as bad as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. So, if you would like some company, why not pop down to the Ansell Centre on a Thursday and have a chat with Sue? You would be made very welcome. The photograph shows just a few of our members together with two of our regular volunteers. Please note the CafÊ will be shut on January 2nd but open as usual on January 9th.

Happy New Year to you all. By the time you read this, Christmas and all its traditions are an almost distant memory. Did you get to see one of the local pantomimes? How about watching one performed by your local friends and family, the dedicated HADS team? 2020 is their 100th birthday so they're really putting together a fantastic show, and for the first time a live band will be playing along side the singers. ALICE IN WONDERLAND story has been rewritten by HADS very own, very talented Sarah Jane Clarke and I can promise the funny script will have you laughing out loud and the catchy, well known songs will get your feet tapping and hands clapping! The usual peculiar creatures, people and flowers Alice meets along the way to the Queens party make the show unforgettable. The most well known Cheshire Cat try to help Alice, but as this cat seems to talk in riddles, poor Alice doesn't know which way to go. Of course Alice in Wonderland wouldn't be complete without a Mad Hatters and March Hares tea party, it's completely, well...madness! This year HADS has been overwhelmed with new cast members, and the two new youngsters playing Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee have the comic timing down to perfection. All the young, and not so young cast members have worked so hard during the rehearsals, the team who play the cards are brilliant. The HADS family are extremely proud of all their members, especially the ones who they have seen grown, and this year they're delighted that Callum Lloyd has taken on the challenging role of this year's dame. Just make sure you do what you should, or that horrible Queen will be, in her words “Off with their heads!â€? I had a chance to get a little chat with ‘Alice’ her self during rehearsals. Another new member to HADS, Sophie Hall. Is this your first time to perform on stage? This isn’t my first time performing. I have moved to Suffolk from Rutland where I was part of Rutland musical theatre. I took part in numerous shows with them over 12 years with our most recent production being Legally Blonde which I LOVED! Have the HADS family made you feel welcome? The HADS family have been great. It’s always a bit daunting joining a new group and knowing no one, but everyone has made me feel welcome and I don’t even feel like the newbie! Being the leading lady, you must alot of lines to learn, how did you learn them all? Yes lots of lines! I’m trying numerous ways to learn them. I have a recording of the script which I listen to and I say my lines over the top. I also find reading over them numerous times helps as well. Performances are 20th, 21st & 22nd February at URC Church, Hadleigh. ÂŁ10 Adults, under 16 ÂŁ7. From Keith Avis or www.hads.webs.com

Hadleigh Evening WI The Suffolk West Federation Of W.I.s got off to a grand finish with the usual Carol Service in St. Mary's Church, Bury St. Edmunds. Culfod School's Senior Choir joined us with their talented Choir Master. The amazing young voices were very uplifting. Impossible competition for the much smaller federation choir of elderly ladies. However, our choir leader, Patricia Mason wrote a carol for the event and it was the best of the four that we sang. Patricia was very pleased with our performance. Because of people being away or for other personal reasons, only a few of us went to the Rock Pantomime at the Wolsey in Ipswich but it was, as usual, very funny and the music was great. Our speaker this evening was Vanessa Van Heerden. Born in Zambia and brought up in South Africa, she has lived her for eight years. She runs her own business, ‘Box Valley Wine’ and she has a small shop in Boxford. She gave us quite a lot of information as we tasted the wines - an English Sparkling Wine, 2 White, 2 Red and a Port. The wines were a mixture of English, French and South African. We ate some cheese and biscuits as we tasted the wine and we had mince pies and sausage rolls with the coffee and tea at the end. The food was provided by members of the committee. It was a very jolly end to the year with such a festive atmosphere and our very charming speaker made it such a lovely evening. Rae Stapleton

Welcome to 2020 - Hasn’t time flown! It seems only such a short while ago that we were celebrating the new millennium in 2000. Well what will 2020 bring, the start of a new decade and many changes at The Cock Inn too. Well firstly we are hoping to extend the cellar in the new year. The Cock Inn has a great reputation for cask ales and as a consequence, far more cellar space is required in order to keep the ales in tip top condition. Unlike keg beers and lagers, cask ale need to be placed on racks or stilages for a day or two prior to being spiled (a small wooden peg is inserted into the barrel which allows the ale to breath and futher ferment). This is followed by another day or two wait prior to tapping (a tap is hammered into the barrel) in order that a beer line can be attached, or indeed as you will see at beer festivals, the ale can be poured directly into a glass. Cask ale was the original ale sold in pubs throughout the land, way before lager beers were invented. During the 1970 and 80’s the brewers introduced keg beer, a pasturised copy of the cask conditioned ale. Why, well it lasted longer and was easier to keep and serve. Unfortunately, it never tasted as good as the real thing, but with many landlords pouring the unsold and over-poured cask ale back into the barrels and out of date beer being commonplace, customers got fed up with poor quality ale and thus switched to the keg styled ale. The introduction of nitro-keg (smooth pour) beer such as Boddingtons, Caffreys and John Smiths saw the popularity of keg beers grow further, well into the early 90’s. In the early 90’s organisations such as CAMRA and CASK MARQUE and companies such as J D Wetherspoon helped to re-promote cask conditioned ales. Today they are as popular as ever, though the drinks market has become extremely competitive with foreign lagers, flavoured ciders and a huge surge in spirits, thanks to the gin and vodka boom of the late decade. East Anglia is a strong area for cask ales with a number of brewers promoting cask ales. The biggest is obviously Greene King and brew great local brands such as IPA and Abbott. Recent acquisitions have included Belhaven, one of the greatest and oldest Scottish working breweries together with the likes of Morlands (Old Speckled Hen), Riddleys, Ruddles and Hansons. With smaller local brewers such as Woodfords, Humpty Dumpty, Nethergates and Bishop Nick, to name but a few, real ale drinkers in Hadleigh are never far from a great pint of British cask ale. Slimmers Lose 3521 Stone in 2019 Super slimmers in the Sudbury and Hadleigh area have lost a whopping 3521 stone in weight – that’s the equivalent of the 1112 solar panels at Worthy Farms Motel, home of the Glastonbury Festival. All together the members of the 14 local Slimming World groups are now 22.5 tonnes lighter than they were this time last of the year. The members, who attend the group every week, follow Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan created by the organisation’s team of expert nutritionists, which encourages them to fill up on satisfying foods such as pasta, rice, potatoes, lean meat and fish, pulses and fruit and veg. Nat, a member at the Clare group, has lost 6st 7lb, radically imroving her health to enable her to compete in 10k runs. She says: “Filling up on lots of satisfying foods means you’re never hungry so I’ve never felt as though I was on a diet. Before I joined Slimming World I thought losing weight meant going to the gym and counting calories. But now I know it’s about making healthier choices about food and becoming a bit more active”. “Reaching this milestone just proves the huge change that we’ve all made to our lives, some people who’ve lost big amounts of weight have probably even saved their lives. It’s brilliant to celebrate together as well because that’s how we’ve been losing weight – together. Every week we support and encourage each other and share tips and recipes, and on top of that we have a lot of fun. “The support and inspiration we get from our Consultants has also been integral to our success. Because they have lost weight themselves, they understand the ups and downs of slimming and can offer us help and advice based on their own experience, without them I don’t think we’d have achieved nearly as much.” Sharon says: “I’m delighted that our members have lost weight so beautifully. It has made a big difference to their lives and to their whole families’ lives, and all of them are happier and healthier now. Slimming has never been more important. There are many overweight and obese people in our area and we just want to help even more people to make real changes for life – there’s no better job satisfaction than that!” Groups in the area are held Monday to Saturday. Roberts Round Up - Rodeo Style! Since opening our Farm Butchery seven years ago it has gone from strength to strength. In 2019, to keep up with demand we increased our livestock numbers. We also changed the breed of sheep we keep. We now have a flock of over one hundred Easy Care sheep on the farm. This proved a good move to a breed that has easier lambing and no shearing. However, one down side of the breed is that, unusually for sheep, they can be difficult to move around the farm, especially when it comes to moving them to the grass on the north side of the farm which involves taking a route right through the farm shop car park and crossing over the A1141 road. Thank you for your patience if you have ever been caught up in one of our regular sheep rodeos! Currently two local farms supply Hollow Trees with calves to rear for beef. Having spent their early months grazing on Suffolk meadows, at their weaning stage, (around eight months) we then take them on inside. However, last September we decided to start our own herd of Lincoln Red cattle so we can breed our own calves. They are a good beef breed and, we were lead to believe, reasonably easy to handle. We are still working on the latter! Again, some of you may have witnessed another Semer rodeo as we tried, for several hours, to bring Viking the bull and his ladies through the car park and across road the recently. Thankfully our pig system doesn’t require us to herd the pigs past the shop! We collect young pigs that have been born and bred outside in the Suffolk Brecks. They are then kept on our farm trail. Firstly, in temporary shelters and then moved inside to the livestock barn as they get bigger. This does involve a bit of free range herding but thankfully within the confines of the field! Moving animals around is all part of our sustainable, grass based, free range livestock systems and ensures we consistently have a supply of great home grown meat for our busy Butchery. Something we are very proud of here at Hollow Trees Farm Robert (aka Bob the Farmer)

Good luck and all the best... Residents and passers-by will no longer be able to pop into VC News at number 35 High Street to pick up their newspaper, magazines or other small, useful daily items. Sadly, after 28 years, the proprietor Vishnu and his wife Chaya Patel, ceased trading in December 2019. It was a difficult decision as the couple have made many good friends over the years. They will be very sorry to say goodbye to everyone, especially their loyal customers, for whom a visit to the shop and a friendly chat was a regular part of their day. Both Vishnu and Chaya had the clever knack of remembering their customers’ preferences when it came to newspapers and showing genuine concern about the special happenings in their lives too. The High School students were also happy to call in and stave off their afternoon hunger on their speedy snacks and confectionary. They also successfully participated in the annual ‘poppy day’ collection raising hundreds of pounds for the British Legion. Happily, they will not be leaving the town as they have lived here since they married and moved from Cambridge. Their son, Pawan and daughter Anita were both educated in Hadleigh schools before moving on to higher education elsewhere. They return to their roots whenever possible. The trend for online newspapers and instant news bulletins and competition from larger business vendors has brought about their life changing decision. Vishnu said “We will greatly miss the customers but not the 5.30am start each day. We don’t plan to stop working but move on to pastures new”. Hadleigh will certainly be the poorer for the loss of their friendly, old fashioned, caring customer service. Good luck and all the best. JD

A Huge Thank You from the Alison Fracella Research Trust and the Brendan Oakes Trust A huge thank you to everyone who came along to the Ansell Centre on Saturday 23rd November to give us, once again, such wonderful support at our 8th joint Quiz Night. Everyone said what a great evening it was with lots of fun and laughter. All the teams rose to the challenge of some difficult questions! As usual the Ploughman’s Supper went down well! On the night, after Congratulations to the winning team! all expenses, we raised a fantastic £908 which we have divided between our two charities. Almost every penny raised will go towards the work we are supporting as our charities have minimal administration costs. The Brendan Oakes Trust supports teenagers facing cancer and the Alison Fracella Research Trust is helping to fund research into brain cancer, especially in young people, at the Royal Marsden Hospital. A big thank you to Keith Avis Printers for printing our tickets and for selling them for us in the shop. Special thanks to Roy, to Kathy, to Heather, to Maria and Paul, to Sue, to Neil and Carol, to Graham and to Emma for all their hard work. Many thanks also to the people who were so generous in their donations of the many fantastic raffle prizes too numerous to mention. A special thank you to Mark and Annie David, to Hadleigh Tyres, to the Orwell Lady, to the Barber Stop, to Coes, to Mecedes Benz, to the Beauty Gallery at Lavenham and to Paul and Marion of “Wakey Wakey” . It would be fantastic to see everyone again next year! Please save the date- Saturday 14th November 2020! A big thank you again to everyone who gave us such very generous support. 20-20 Pledge for the Planet Challenge HEAT (Hadleigh Environmental Action Team) are challenging the Hadleigh community to make some changes in their lives to help our local environment and the planet in response to the climate emergency. The 2020 Pledge Project challenges local individuals, groups, families, schools and businesses to attempt at least 20 of the pledges in 2020 from a wide list of suggestions. We are all facing major environmental challenges from threats like climate change, waste disposal, deforestation, pollution, and overfishing. Our impact on the planet primarily comes from what we eat, what we buy, how we power our homes and how we travel from place to place. Of course governments and big business also play an important role, but we all need to help protect our planet in whatever ways we can. More than 100 people signed Charmaine McKissock’s Ledger of Pledges and Wishes for the Planet at the Christmas fair and we would love to build upon this into 2020. Some of the pledges are small, quick and easy to do; others will require much more effort, but we would like to invite you to take a look and see which ones you can commit to. The pledges range from reducing the food waste in your home to becoming a member of a campaigning organisation and everything in between. Over the next 12 months we will be giving tips and advice in our monthly column on to how best to achieve some of the changes, together with ideas for further pledges. We would very much like to hear how members of the community are getting on with their pledges and welcome further ideas on how Hadleigh as a community can reduce our carbon footprint. It would be great if people would share how they are getting on with the pledges throughout 2020 via our Facebook page 'Hadleigh Environmental Action Team' or by emailing Hadleigh.heat@hotmail.com. Together we can take action to create effective solutions and protect the future of our planet and our town. Don’t forget that reducing consumption can be good for your pocket and your health, as well as for the planet.

Keeping Promises: Do Pledges Work? Hadleigh Environmental Action Team is inviting locals to set an example, by making individual pledges to help our environment and planet. Does this approach actually work and if so, why? Do these promises fall by the wayside after a brief period of commitment, like many New Year Resolutions? Across various settings and circumstances, pledging a commitment does indeed seem to have a significant and lasting effect on behaviour. “Promise cards were once piloted to encourage people to wear seatbelts: drivers were asked to sign a written statement of commitment to use seatbelts for 1 or 2 months. The long-term results were outstandingly positive. Where the Environment is concerned, groups of households and students were either a) given an information leaflet about recycling; b) asked to make a spoken pledge to recycle; or c) asked to make a written pledge. Those who pledged developed higher recycling behaviours, with the written pledges resulting in the strongest and long-lasting change. Why do written commitments work? When we feel our actions and beliefs are at odds, we experience discomfort, so we work hard to make our actions match up with what we believe about ourselves. However, strong and knee-jerk habits, such as car use or turning up the heating, make us resistant: some habit disruption and gentle peer pressure is also needed to back up our commitment. So, if you’re trying to get others to reduce their carbon footprint for the sake of a better future: 1. Get written and specific promises. 2. A combination of individual and group pledges works best, as people can hold each other accountable. 3. Remove temptations and find ways that people are gently and nonjudgementally reminded of their commitments. Children and young people all over the world are asking adult to pledge some action to ensure a positive future for them: they are sure to remind us of our promises in times to come. Kevin Whyte is nominated as eco-hero of the month. In November, he pledged to cycle to work from Hadleigh to Ipswich twice a week (all being well). He is the first member of HEAT to make a public pledge. Tell us what you or somebody you know is doing to help the environment and you could be our ‘Eco Hero of the Month’: nominations to info@wobblylearning.co.uk. Article written by C. McKissock, member of HEAT - Hadleigh Environmental Action Team.

Race4Life Hadleigh High School took part in the Race4Life on Friday 8th November in aid of Cancer Research UK. The fundraising target was £500 however it became clear early on that we would exceed that target by some margin. The final total raised was an amazing £8547.08. Well done to all our students and staff who participated on the day, and thank you to everyone in the local community who sponsored them.

Tree Planting at Hadleigh High School Tree planting campaigns are being launched nationally in an effort to combat climate change and we are all being asked to do our bit. Three of our Year 9 students have taken up this challenge and planted some young trees within our school grounds. Rowan Abbott, Judy Ebbs and Bethany Herron planted native broadleaf species of trees including silver birch, oak, hawthorn, crab apple, wild cherry and hazel. The ability of trees to absorb carbon dioxide means that with time, our trees will be a valuable weapon in the fight against climate change. "From Little Acorns Do Mighty Oaks Grow"

Art Trip to Aldeburgh On Monday 25th of November our Art class went to Aldeburgh for inspiration to put in our artbooks. During this trip we were able to see Maggi Hambling’s famous Scallop Shell situated on Aldeburgh beach. We studied this because we are looking at work from various artists who use the ocean as inspiration. I took lots of pictures that I will be able to use for my Aldeburgh art page. We also visited the art galleries in the main high street and saw some amazing work! To top it off, we were able to get fish and chips, eating them while watching the waves crashing on the beach. We also visited Snape Maltings and saw some original artwork from Maggi Hambling. I really enjoyed this trip, and it has given me a lot of ideas when producing final outcomes for my sketchbook. The Season of Goodwill

! ! ! "

During the season of goodwill, we are reminded about those less fortunate than ourselves and how we can help them. We all have a particular charity close to our heart and one way which could be considered to help a charity is through gifting under your Will. Under the terms of your Will you can leave a cash gift, item of property or a share of your estate to charity in two ways; either by naming a specific charity in your Will or by leaving it to your trustees for them to decide which charity is most appropriate. If you have a specific charity in mind, you can leave a wish in your Will as to how the money or property left to the charity is to be used, for example, leaving money for the benefit of a branch of the charity closest to your home, or for a specified purpose. If leaving such a wish in your Will, it is important to consider what you would like to happen if circumstances change, for example if your local branch were to have closed or a specific project has come to an end. We can assist with appropriate drafting to ensure such a gift does not fail. Not only will you be providing much needed assistance to a charity of your choice, but gifting to charities under your Will also provides benefits to your estate. Any gift left to a UK registered charity under the terms of your Will is free of inheritance tax. On top of this, if you leave at least 10% of your taxable estate to charity, any inheritance tax due on the rest of your estate will be charged at a reduced rate of 36%, rather than the standard rate of 40%. We can advise how this could affect the individual inheritance tax position of your estate. If you are thinking about making a Will for the first time or your current Will is in need of review and you have questions in relation to legacies as outline above, then please get in contact with the team at Gotelee. We recommend that a Will is reviewed about every five years, or earlier if your circumstances change. Thresholds in relation to inheritance tax, personal circumstances and family dynamics change quite regularly and, having gone to the trouble of having a Will prepared in the first place, you want to make sure that it continues to confirm your feelings and wishes. Quite often, a simple change can bring an existing Will up to date. For further information please contact Kay Baker, kay.baker@gotelee.co.uk, telephone 01473 826311

Kersey Mill Newsletter 2019 ended with our incredibly popular Santa’s Workshops and the tickets sold like hot cakes, attracting visitors from across the east region and even further afield! These events continue to be a huge success and are crucial in assisting with funding the Mill’s restoration project. Thanks so much to everyone who attended the Santa’s Workshops for your support, we also really appreciated reading the wonderful reviews we received on social media. Finally thanks to all those who helped stage the event, especially the dedicated Santa’s Workshop team that have worked extremely hard in the lead up to Christmas to produce an amazing event that we are all very proud of. During 2019, steady progress was made with the Mill’s restoration and although at times the project was hindered by having to carry out essential maintenance work, we have been encouraged to see the work to reinstate the mill stones and furniture finally reach a conclusion. We are now looking forward to early Spring, when we will be able to commence the final phase in the restoration process; work to the mill elevators and bolters, in order to have the Mill fully operational for our forthcoming Open Days. Our calendar of events for 2020 is currently being arranged and the Mill Open Days will start with the nationally organised “Drive It Day” on Sunday 26th April. We will also be including the weekends that coincide with “National Heritage Week” during 15th - 23rd August, please visit the website www.kerseymill.net for further updates. Following the feedback we received from our visitors during 2019, we will continue to offer our free guided tours of the Mill to small groups and societies, please call 01473 829317 for further details or to book. Wishing you all a very Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year

Havin’ A Ball! Kathryn Grandon, Chairman of Babergh District Council and Hadleigh South District Councillor Happy New Year! What a year 2019 has been. We may have only just had the national election, but do you remember, in May last year there were local elections? It has meant so much to me to be re-elected as one of your District Councillors, this time as an Independent. All year people have been coming up to me to offer their congratulations, and it really does mean a lot, so thank you very much for your support. I was really honoured when after the May elections I was nominated by the Leader and Deputy Leader of Babergh District Council to be Chairman of the Council. It has been an exciting time and I have enjoyed representing the Council all over the County and I make sure Hadleigh is publicised too (as well as keeping the Councillors in order during Council Meetings). As Chairman of the Council I can choose a charity to support and I selected Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance. Well, I am not good at climbing mountains, running marathons or swimming the channel… How could I raise money and highlight the profiles of the charity and Hadleigh? Let’s have a ball, I said! So I’m Havin’ a Ball. I would love Hadleigh residents to come – I do realise the price of tickets does make it prohibitive to some people and also it is not everyone’s cup of prosecco, but hopefully we will raise a good sum for HDAA. I am using the event to raise funds for Hadleigh Guides and Hadleigh Sea Scouts too. There will be Chairmen, Mayors and other dignitaries coming from all over East Anglia, but I would love to see Hadleigh people there, so please join me if you can. It will be a splendid evening - the date is the same as the Hadleigh Show (so you will need to pace yourself!) Saturday 16th May. Weather permitting, we will have drinks in the Deanery Gardens and the Ball itself will be held in St Mary’s Church. Many of us take the beauty of St Mary’s Church for granted – but you will be amazed to see it transformed into a stunning setting, lit up inside with coloured beams of light, sparkling tables dressed for a banquet; just the setting for a Black and Gold themed Black Tie Ball. We are very grateful to Father Jo Delfgou and his team for the use of the Church and we are mindful of the Church’s primary use. Following a delicious dinner, there will be an auction run by a professional auctioneer to raise funds for the charities and then dancing to the most amazing band, The Dukes of Havoc. There are a limited number of tables - £550 for tables of 10. There will also be the opportunity of some places at £55 a ticket. To buy tickets by BACS or for information, please contact: civic@baberghmidsuffolk.gov.uk Or payment can be made by cheque made out to: Babergh District Council, and sent for the attention of: The Civic Office, Babergh District Council, Endeavour House, 8 Russell Road, Ipswich IP1 2BX, along with the names of the guests if you know who you are inviting. We’ll have a ball while raising money for good Hadleigh causes. I hope to see you there

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk I was truly honoured to be returned as your Member of Parliament in the general election. The months leading up to the poll were increasingly fraught in Westminster and I sincerely believe that the country voted as it did in part to bring stability and an end to constant elections, uncertainty and paralysis. That frustrating deadlock was finally broken by a sweeping Conservative majority, and I am grateful to everyone in South Suffolk who supported me. That said, as Members of Parliament our first duty is to represent our constituents, and that means every single resident, no matter whom they voted for. I hope it is in this manner that constituents feel I have conducted myself to date, and it is in this way that I will strive to continue. In my election address (sent by Royal Mail to every household), I set out key constituency priorities, alongside the national manifesto all candidates of my party were elected on. It’s therefore now a case of:back to work, to deliver. In this constituency that means joining with my Suffolk colleagues – all of whom are now Conservative – to fight for our fair share of national funding. We have already hit the ground running, teaming up in the week Parliament returned to send a jointly signed request to the Transport Secretary to remember the A14 in his forthcoming investment round for major roads. I look forward to making further such progress on funding for schools and the police. Nationally, we will be delivering the Prime Minister’s Brexit deal into the law of the land. This will not only enable us to deliver on the referendum result, as long promised, but also free up Government energy for other policy priorities, e.g. tackling climate change. From social care to how we support farming after Brexit, there are many complex issues to grapple with. Despite the Government’s strong majority, progress will not always be easy. Nevertheless, it has been a great privilege to represent South Suffolk in Parliament since 2015 and with a renewed mandate I look forward optimistically to the challenges that lie ahead.

The Hadleigh Steering Group is a forum for sharing useful information and is open to everyone in the town. We met on Monday 9 December 2019. Chair was Sylvia Martin MBE 1. GUEST SPEAKER – Will Akast – Environment Agency: The River Brett The Environment Agency works to protect and improve the environment in many ways, helping adaptation to climate change & reducing its impacts both for humans and wildlife and improving the quality of water, land and air. Will is the Catchment Delivery Manager working with his small team out of Ipswich. His talk majored on the Brett catchment area and Stour Valley although his role is wider than this. It includes regulation of waste and major businesses, contaminated land and water quality. The Brett is surrounded by intensive arable farming. One of the main ways to assist rivers is to plant trees. Benefits include habitat diversity, underwater root systems offering safe havens for fish, bank stabilisation, shade which suppresses growth of aquatic vegetation and on the land, offers a more diverse habitat and food for birds and small mammals. Routine maintenance on the River Brett is carried out at Tinker’s Lane Gate & Weir, Layham Mill and Raydon Mill. Measuring rainfall and river flow is carried out at Cockfield, Hadleigh and Higham’s gauging stations. Everyone can help protect & enhance the Brett by observing the following guidelines: empty septic tanks at least annually; use phosphate-free and less detergent; only pour water into drain; minimise bleach, disinfectant and garden chemical use and conserve water as much as possible. Please report any pollution, or fish in distress, to the EA Hotline: freephone 0800 80 70 60 2.1 HADLEIGH TOWN COUNCIL https://hadleigh.suffolk.cloud Andy McMillan has been appointed Town Council Manager and takes up his role in January 2020. The Town Council is recruiting for a couple of other posts which would bring the office up to three full time staff. There are two vacancies for Councillors who will be co-opted if a by-election does not have to be called. Anyone wishing to be considered for one of these roles should contact the council. There are two major planning applications: (i) 250 houses near French’s Farm where the consultation period has been extended (please submit any comments to the Town Council). (ii) the quarry operator who is looking to significantly increase vehicle movements. The council is working with Radio Suffolk regarding Suffolk Day, hosted in Hadleigh, in June 2020. The Hadleigh Christmas Event was considered to have been very successful, particularly as planning started very late. Feedback has been positive and lessons were learned to improve it for next year. Cllr Gregg and Angela Wiltshire were thanked for their hard work. 2.2 BABERGH & MID SUFFOLK DISTRICT COUNCIL www.babergh.gov.uk and www.midsuffolk.gov.uk Babergh District Council is still in Purdah so all meetings (except Planning and Licensing) are postponed until after the election on 12 December. As Chair of BDC, Cllr Grandon is hosting a Black Tie, Gala Charity Ball on Saturday 16 May in the stunning setting of St Mary’s Church. Tables of 10 for £550. Individual tickets £55. three course dinner by Jamie Lee Smith, charity auction, dancing to Dukes of Havoc. Everyone is encouraged to come along and support this event. 2.3 & 2.4 VISIT HADLEIGH & HADLEIGH LEGACY GROUP / COMMUNITY GARDENERS www.visithadleighsuffolk.co.uk Diary note: VisitHadleighSuffolk AGM will be held at 6pm, Monday 27 January 2020 at Hadleigh Pool & Leisure with refreshments from 5.45pm. Anyone who has an interest in Hadleigh as a visitor destination is warmly invited to attend. Eighteen Hadleigh businesses now sponsor the website, for which we are grateful. It is sad that the numbers have fallen from the 30 businesses who sponsored it last year, all benefitting from it. A short questionnaire to all those who did not renew their assistance and out of 50, only five businesses responded. A special thanks to Riverside Nursery who has provided more bulbs for the Market Square garden and the Cedric Morris Garden. 2.5 TIDY TOWN Email: ourtidytown@gmail.com 20129 has been a good year with picks taking place twice a week covering eight designated areas. Looking back over the year, it all started with him appearing on BBC day time news followed by BBC Look East. Bowza was then presented with a prestige PDSA Commendation award (very few of these are awarded). Bowza’s next appearance was on a Channel Five TV show called ‘Do The Right Thing’ with Eammon Holmes and Ruth Langsford. On the show Bowza sang with a choir on stage in front of a live audience and Eammon presented Bowza with a Dog of the Year trophy. He was then invited by Ipswich Town Football Club to be a mascot and walk the team out at Portman Road. The Wednesday before the match he visited the training ground and met some of the team and the manager Paul Lambert, where he had fun playing football with the players. On the Saturday of the match he walked out in front of a crowd of 25,000 all singing ‘Hey Jude’. Bowza was not fazed by the crowd, all he wanted was the ball that the ref was carrying, he made ITFC history by being the first ever dog to walk out the team. Bowza and his owner Don enjoyed watching the match from a private box and Bowza’s photo appeared in the match programme and he received a special first match certificate. Next came a big surprise, The PDSA contacted Don saying that Bowza had been awarded the ‘Shining World Hero Trophy’ from The Supreme Master Television channel, a vegan diet promoting organisation who are also big into animal conservation all over the world. Part of Bowza’s award was a donation of $20.000 to the PDSA. The Supreme TV film crew came to Hadleigh and filmed Bowza being presented with his World Hero trophy together with some of his four legged friends. The presentation will be shown in over 250 countries world wide next year. Then came a really big honour, Bowza was special guest at the Hadleigh on Show event in October and he was asked to open the event. Don and Bowza also had a stand showing films of him on the Channel Five TV show and BBC interviews as well as walking out at Ipswich Town. Bowza posed for photos with James Cartlidge MP and the Hadleigh Mayor as well as briefly wearing the Mayor’s chain of honour. In between all of this excitement there was another story, whilst walking along Hadleigh High Street Bowza pulled Don over to a bundle in the road which turned out to be a very young baby Jackdaw in danger of being run over. So with no parents about we took him home and raised him, he soon became Bowza’s friend and would sit on his head or back and that story also made it to national TV, newspapers and magazines. To round off the year Bowza was on Channel Five TV in a show called ‘Pets do the funniest things at Christmas’, so far it has been shown twice’.

News from St Mary’s Primary School Collective Worship As always, we are very grateful to all our visitors, Father Jo, Janice White, who explained the significance of the Christingle, Wendy and David Atkins, Bryn Rickards, Joyce Willis, and Sian Bendall from Hollow Trees Farm, who told the children all about ‘Farmer Christmas’ and in a very engaging presentation described the preparation and planning that has to take place long in advance of the Christmas season in order to have enough sprout sticks and other vegetables to go round, not to mention the all-important Christmas tree! It was lovely to see all the musical talent on show for a special music assembly to finish the term. Different classes showcased their learning from music lessons, singing songs and entertaining the audience. Parents were also treated to a performance from our violin group and a piano solo. Christmas Traditions Christmas isn’t Christmas without a re-telling of the Nativity story and we enjoyed two of them. The Early Years performed ‘The Sleepy Shepherd’ and Years 1 and 2 gave us ‘It’s a Cracker!’. In both cases, the audiences were held spellbound by the excellent singing, dancing and costumes, and some impressive acting and line-learning from the KS1 children. Many thanks to the Friends of St Mary’s, who organised the popular Christmas Disco and our annual Christmas Fete to raise funds for the school. We are really grateful for all the time and effort put in by so many people to make these events successful. As always, the Christmas Fete was well-attended and full of fun. There were real reindeer for the children to see and lots of children queued up to visit Santa! The children really enjoyed the games and Christmas crafts. During the last week of term the whole school took part in a Design Technology day, which involved designing, making and evaluating projects as diverse as pompoms and bread. We were impressed by the productivity and ingenuity of the children. A big thank you is due to our hard-working kitchen staff who prepared, cooked and served a fantastic Christmas lunch for everyone. It was a festive and colourful occasion, with some hilarious hats and jolly jumpers on show! Year 6, after working very hard in their first term, let off steam on the last morning at a trampolining event at Hadleigh High School. Then they came down to earth again as they joined the rest of the school, together with parents, grandparents and friends, at the Christmas service at St Mary’s church. Such a lovely way to end a busy term!

Hadleigh & District Garden Club Monday December 9th 2019: December's quiz night certainly had us exercising our 'little grey cells'! Five rounds on different themes and a cryptic table quiz kept us busy, but we still found plenty of time to enjoy a few glasses of mulled wine and the lovely food which was on offer. It was good to see visitors as well as club members come along to swell our numbers and we had a full house with five teams in total. It was a close run thing all the way through but the prize winners by a whisker were 'The Sprouts', so congratulations go to them. Another prize on the evening went to Kate who was the overall competition winner and received the chairman's trophy to keep for the year as well as a garden voucher, finally we finished the evening with a Christmas themed raffle. Thanks must go to Nicola and Fiona, our question setters, and to everyone who helped to make the evening such success. Monday January 13th 2020: Last year various aspects of the environment featured in many of our monthly meetings and we continue this in 2020 with a talk from Hawk Honey, visitor officer at Suffolk Wildlife Trust, 'bees in your garden' will be his theme. The competition for January is 'a photo of your garden'. We meet in the dining room of the Town Hall at 7.30pm. Entrance is £2 for members and £4 for non members which includes refreshments, we look forward to seeing you there. hadleighgardenclub@gmail.com

Hadleigh Art Club Activities The Art Club starts the Happy New Year with an afternoon of drawing and painting pets (dogs, cats, guinea pigs etc.) on Tuesday January 7th. On the 14th “Life on the Farm” which encompasses a farming scene of today or yesterday, or maybe a farmyard in the snow. January 21st bring an object to create a shared collection for a still life, perhaps vases or a bottle or two. Oriental style is the theme for January 28th. The Art Club is always ready to welcome new members; just pop up on a Tuesday afternoon at 2pm in the Hadleigh Library Seminar Room.

Library Life: New year - same you Each time the beginning of a new year rolls around, we are inundated with the call to action of: New Year - New You! We are encouraged to take up new sports, cut out various food groups and to declutter, and the underlying message is that who we are is not good enough, we must change and make ourselves something new. Whilst a lot of these initiatives are, of course, inherently positive: yes, it is good to be as fit and healthy as possible, I sometimes wonder if the pressure to always be improving and leaving behind what we are, is not so good for us. Maybe, instead of trying to create a new version of ourselves, we could spend a bit of time looking after the person that we already are. This may include making small changes to diet and lifestyle, but I like to think it could perhaps be a gentle approach. Suffolk Libraries are champions of wellbeing and have various events and resources available throughout the year to help anyone looking for a bit of guidance to improve their quality of life. But alongside these services, always remember that everyone is welcome in any of our libraries and we are a safe space you can come to for company, somewhere to sit in the warm, to learn or be whisked away to new worlds in books or films or to find new friends. Suffolk Libraries, we are the charity supporting the people in our communities. Hadleigh Library, 29 High Street, Hadleigh www.suffolklibraries.co.uk

Down to Earth ...with Dave Looking back 2019 was a bit of a mixed bag, pleasant memories include the trip to the Shrewsbury flower show, the day trip to Bressingham where the nursery next door to the fabulous gardens was having a closing down sale, how we got all those plants into the car I do not know. The various open gardens we attended, the ones in Hadleigh were particularly good with very successful plant sales at a couple of them. The Hadleigh on Show event was a great success and I hope it will be repeated in 2020. Our trip to Helmingham Hall for the illuminated gardens was fine once we had found our way in via the exit. The garden club is doing very well with new members signing up at nearly every meeting, this, I think, is partly due to the quality of the speakers and the much valued work of the committee. Speakers booked for this coming year include a talk about bees in your garden and possibly my favourite, in February - composting, a talk by a master composter, this should be right up my street. The end of year fun quiz was a great success with mulled wine and a superb buffet, again many thanks to all. The garden at the back of the market place is looking good with lots of bulbs planted, hopefully they will put on a good show in the spring, well done Christine and her band of helpers. We have had our fair share of rain in the past few months, but luckily not as bad as those in the north of the country. Try and keep off the ground and grass as much as possible, but any leaves should be raked off the grass and paths, slippery paths and less than agile gardeners do not go together. Frost does have its uses as it helps to break down the soil and can kill off some pests. We have had some very welcome heavy ones recently, on one occasion I arrived at the allotment one very frosty morning to find the padlock on the shed door frozen solid, after some head scratching I poured put half a cup of steaming hot coffee from my flask, dipped the padlock into it and in no time I was able to unlock it. A spray with WD40 was applied to stop it happening again and I still had enough coffee left for my elevenses. When it is cold and frosty it is essential to feed the birds and to give them a supply of fresh clean water. When we sit and have our breakfast looking out of the window it gives us great pleasure to see the blackbirds, robins, sparrows and starlings having their regular morning bath. It makes us shiver just to watch them, but they do seem to enjoy an all over splash. That's all for this time, all the best for 2020, Dave

Suffolk Bereavement Support Taking Care of Ourselves Whilst the emotional reactions to bereavement are widely accepted, the physical effects are often overlooked altogether. Our eating habits can change drastically when we are overwhelmed by loss and the desire for food may become a low priority. Motivation can dwindle, exercise can seem pointless and the thought of a brisk walk may be alien. Seeking too much comfort in the wrong foods such as those high in sugar or over reliance on alcohol can be a temptation. No one wants to be a spoilsport, especially when we may already be feeling low, but the negative effects of poor eating and drinking habits and too little exercise can only add to our vulnerability. But we mustn’t forget that even a small amount of regular exercise and trying to eat a balanced diet can help us maintain good health while we adjust to our loss. This is a topic, amongst many others, that we look at in our groups to gently encourage healthy living. If this blog is meaningful for you in connection with a bereavement, be it recent or further back in time then why not come and join a Suffolk Bereavement Support group? Our afternoon group is held in central Hadleigh on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month from 1.30pm-3.00pm and our Capel St. Mary group meets in the early evening on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month from 6.30pm-8.00pm. Each meeting finishes with refreshments and informal chat. We would love to hear from you if you would like to join us at any time. St Mary’s C of E Primary School Believe Inspire Achieve!

St Mary’s Church of England Primary School is a vibrant, Christian school, in which all children achieve well and are inspired to a lifelong love of learning!

SIAMS Inspection February 2017

OUTSTANDING! “The excellent pastoral care and concern for individuals meets the pupils and their families at their point of need within an inclusive Christian family environment.”

“One of the ways in which St Mary’s stands out is its Christian commitment to providing exemplary pastoral care and concern for every individual within this inclusive family community…”

“Every child is expected to do well, underpinned by the belief that all children can achieve.”

“Christian values…are explicitly taught and rewarded, resulting in excellent relationships and behaviour.”

Let me begin with a thank you to Kelvin and his team for letting us ‘talk’ to our local supporters through the Community News. This month’s news was submitted early for the Christmas break so I don’t know what the weather is like as you read this, or even the General Election result. Did someone say ignorance is bliss? Thank you also to everyone who made our Christmas Fair the best ever. Lots of two and four legged friends called in and £3845 was raised. Yet more thanks to Jackson Civil Engineering for donating £1750 to SESAW from fundraising activities during it’s recent annual staff conference in Ipswich. It was the first outing for my canine friend Megan, an older lady who belies her years, and she did look cute in Santa’s sleigh! The Nayland 10K will take place on 5th July 2020 and once again the organisers have chosen SESAW as one of their charities. This is a family friendly event with a 1k Fun Run, 5k and 10k runs through beautiful Constable country. Amongst our dogs is Oscar, a victim of circumstances through no fault of his own. He is only two years old and misses his family dreadfully. Everyone here loves him and the younger volunteers are often found cuddling him in his bed. Oscar needs lots of training, exercise and company. It won’t be easy but if you are strong enough to overcome his exuberance you will end up with a cracking dog. Best wishes for 2020 from all of us at SESAW, including me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua. Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare, Reg.Charity No.1124029, Stoke Road, Leavenheath, CO6 4PP. Personal Hygiene Project From gathering information from our young people, it was fed back to us that personal hygiene products such as deodorant and toothpaste, as well as feminine hygiene products, are so expensive at times, that it is hard to have access to them when they need them. We here at Porch Project CANNOT accept this and we will now be stocking a range of products so if young people really need them, they have them, free of charge. From toothpaste and shampoo, to shower gels and hair bands, tampons and sanitary towels, they will have free access to our supplies to address their needs. They can have access to: Toothpaste, Toothbrushes, Shampoo, Conditioner, Roll on deodorant, Hairbrushes, Hair ties, Bars of soap, Cotton wool pads, Tampons, Sanitary towels, Knickers, Mouthwash and much more. Thank you so much to Hadleigh Pool and a Leisure who have kindly offered to be a drop off point for these products. Please contact Kayleigh Diss, Senior youth worker on 07535 254031 youthworker2@porchproject.co.uk if you would like to donate any products or for more information

Hadleigh Community Primary School Key Stage 1 - Reception The Reception children have been busy learning about people who help us. We learnt about who we could ask for help if were lost and who could help us if we were hurt. We were very fortunate to have a visit from a paramedic, Mr Watts, and an ambulance. The children were able to see the different equipment within the ambulance that helps people who are poorly. Some of the children had the opportunity to test the heart monitor to see their pulses and oxygen levels. The children were very excited to see the blue flashing lights on the ambulance. Thank you very much for taking the time to come and visit us Mr Watts. Music The lead up to Christmas has been non-stop with lots of musical performances. Reception have been busy with their Nativity play while Nursery have been preparing some lovely Christmas songs. The choir and instrumentalists have been involved in several Community performances including the Baptist Church, Magdalen House and Canterbury House Care Homes. KS2 are rehearsing for their traditional Carol Service in St Mary’s Church at 2pm on Thursday 19th December. Sports On Monday 2nd December, 40 Year 4 pupils took part in an Inter-Year Group Dodgeball tournament at HCPS in our main hall. The children were put into four teams which were as followed: The Pro Dodgers, Quick Fire, The Silly Dodgers and The Roaring Lions. Each team played a total of six matches, lasting 5 minutes long. Points were awarded to the team depending on how many players they managed to get out of the opposition. The results are as followed: 1st Place - Quick Fire (22 points) 2nd Place - The Pro Dodgers (21 points) 3rd Place - The Roaring Lions (18 points) 4th Place - The Silly Dodgers (15 points) On Thursday 12th December, we took 18 of our Year 6 pupils to compete in the Indoor Sportshall Athletics event at Westbourne Academy. There were ten schools in total at this competition. They were: Dale Hall, The Oaks, Halifax, East Bergholt, Sproughton, Witnesham, Whitehouse, St. Marks and Springfield. Each athlete took part in four events, ranging from sprints, long distance running, jumping events, obstacle races and throwing events. As there were over 250 children competing in the same sportshall, the atmosphere was immense! After an amazing afternoon of races and events, Hadleigh CPS finished 1st which was an incredible achievement! This means we await the county finals on February 7th at Newmarket. Well done to all the boys and girls who took part!

Letter from Layham www.layham.org

Layham Parish Council The main points discussed at the Council meeting of 27 November 2019 were: • Public Forum Ron Gunn reported that the water at the allotments had now been turned off for the winter; he would turn it back on in the spring. He had checked the defibrillator in the phone box in Upper Layham and said the box needed cleaning; as did the bus shelter. Leaves had been cleared from the Recycling Centre and the handle on a dog bin on the playing field was broken; he kindly volunteered to mend this. • District Council report Councillor Ward noted that the free swimming sessions during school holidays had proved successful. As a general election had been called for 12 December, the only committee meetings due to take place during ‘purdah’ were Planning and Licensing. He highlighted the ‘Tree for Life’ initiative - Babergh was offering families a tree to mark the arrival of every new child. With regard to fly tipping, Babergh had taken the decision to ‘name and shame’ those found guilty, who were also fined. With regard to the possible change of name Councillor Paton asked why, if agreed, this would not take place until 2021. Councillor Ward explained that it was hoped to make a decision in spring 2020, but a name change could only be implemented at the beginning of a new financial year, ie 1 April 2021. • County Council report It had been agreed at the Cabinet meeting held on 5 November to approve the changes to civil parking – responsibility for the enforcement of parking would pass from the Police to the District Council; the changes were expected to be in place by the end of January 2020. The grit bin naming initiative had proved popular and the gritters now had their names displayed on the front and side of the cabs. • Highways & Speeding Layham would now be included in the mobile detection van programme - dates would not be publicised, but the PC had asked to be notified afterwards. Both county and local police were fully aware of the speeding issues in the village. The working party would consider the various options concerning deterrents and bring a costed proposal to the next meeting. Councillor Jones (SCC) said a working group was being set up to look at automatic number plate recognition and share best practice; parish council representatives would be invited to join this forum. • Budget and Precept for 2020/21 The working party had met on 15 November and a draft budget and notes had been circulated prior to the meeting. It was agreed unanimously to accept the recommendations of the working party and approve the budget for 2020/21; the precept would remain at £11,000. • War Memorial Historic England had written to say they were considering adding the War Memorial to the List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. If it was recommended for listing, the final decision would be made by the Secretary of State. • Junction of Brett Green with Mill Lane A parishioner had written to ask the PC to consider the problem of vehicles exiting Brett Green onto Mill Lane without stopping (the situation was exacerbated by vehicles parking opposite the entrance to Brett Green). This had been a problem for some time, but was now happening more frequently. It was agreed to report the problem to SCC Highways and ask them to reinstate the faded white lines in order to make it clear that vehicles in Mill Lane had the right of way. • 2020 meetings The schedule of meetings for 2020 was agreed and would be posted on the notice boards and on the website. St Andrew’s – your Parish Church Services for January 2020: Sunday 5 January 9.15am Morning Worship Sunday 12 January 9.15am Sung Eucharist Sunday 19 January 9.30am Café Church Sunday 26 January 9.15am Joint Eucharist with Shelley, at all Saints, Shelley The Hot Sunday Lunch served in the Village Hall on Sunday 17 November made a profit of £624 for church funds. Layham Playgroup New Year news We had a very busy run up to Christmas, we had an elf come to stay at playgroup and he brought us lots of crafts and activities to complete each day. We had a fantastic cooked Christmas lunch and shared the Christmas story with our friends from St Andrews church. We are now looking forward to what the new year has in store for us at playgroup Ladybird Toddler Group is part of Layham Playgroup and takes place every Wednesday morning during term time, 9.30 – 11.00 am, and is open to all children from birth – five years. We have a range of toys and activities ranging from a quiet baby area to role-play, small world, playdough and crafts.

If you are interested in seeing Layham Playgroup for yourself and would like to arrange a visit, please contact us on 07999 866419 or email us at admin@layhamplaygroup.co.uk Layham Playgroup is a registered Charity Incorporated Organisation 1160254 Layham Christmas Fayre The Layham Christmas Fayre on the 7th December at the Village Hall proved a real success. Showcasing some of the great talent we have in the village we enjoyed mulled wine, supplied by the Queen’s Head, and homemade mince pies from Layham “home bakers”. The generosity and goodwill of the people of Layham resulted in us being able to make a donation of £520 towards the refurbishment of the Village Hall. So a huge thank you to everyone who supported the event in so many ways, our crafters, those who made donations, including the Mauldon Brewery in Sudbury, our bakers and produce makers and of course all the wonderful volunteers who helped make the day such a success. This is the second event from the new Layham Events Committee. Inspired by the success so far we can only say ‘watch this space’ for future fun events and games in the village, which can raise community funds along the way. Thank you Layham and have a Merry Christmas - from your Events Committee. Layham Village Hall A huge thanks from the Village Hall committee for everyone’s support for the hall in 2019, especially to the members of the Layham Events Committee who have raised money for the upcoming cloakroom renovation. Over the coming year we are looking to increase the number of people on the management committee to ensure the venue runs well for all the community. The committee meet just once a month and hold four ‘working’ days a year. If you care about the hall, have ideas of how to support it and can help run the facility then we would love to hear from you. Contact David b2shopkeeper@gmail.com or Katy on katysheppard@gmail.com Layham Local History Group Essex and Suffolk Hunt 1967 Our appeal in the December HCN for information about this photograph resulted in Jeremy Pembroke (a past Master of the hunt) telling us that leading the hounds is Eric Waldron (Huntsman at the time) and following behind Jack McClelland (Whipper-in). The Layham Local History Group hopes to put together the story of the 80 years that that the Essex and Suffolk Hunt has been in Layham. If you have photographs or ephemera and would be prepared to share them with us then please contact our archivist Charlotte Britton on 01473 823351 or E-mail charlottepbritton@gmail.com. Make a New Year Resolution That Could Be a Life Saver NHS screening It’s easy to find a million things you’d rather do than go for a health check, and just as easy to come up with reasons why that health check isn’t really necessary. Screening is a way of finding out if people are at higher risk of a health problem, so that early treatment can be offered or information given to help them make informed decisions. AAA screening is a way of checking if there's a bulge or swelling in the aorta, the main blood vessel that runs from your heart down through your tummy. This bulge or swelling is called an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm. It can be serious if it's not spotted early on because it could get bigger and eventually burst (rupture). In England, screening for AAA is offered to men during the year they turn 65. Screening is not routinely offered to women, men under 65 or people who have already been treated for an AAA. This is because the risk of an AAA is much smaller in these groups. If you're a man and you're registered with a GP, you'll get a screening invitation in the post when you're 64 or soon after your 65th birthday. If you're a man over 65 and have not been screened before, you can ask for a test by contacting your local AAA screening service directly. If you're a woman or man under 65 and you think you might have a higher risk of AAA, due to family history, talk to your GP. If your GP thinks you might benefit from having a scan, this will usually be done when you're 5 years younger than the age at which your relative was found to have an AAA. Bowel Cancer Screening Bowel cancer screening can save lives. Screening aims to detect bowel cancer at an early stage, when treatment has the best chance of working. The screening programme uses a new simpler and more accurate test - the Faecal Immunochemical Test (FIT). FIT is a more sensitive test and has the potential to detect more cancers and pre-cancerous polyps. Polyps can usually be removed, to lower the risk of bowel cancer. If you are registered with a GP, and within the eligible age range, a test will be automatically posted to you to complete in the privacy of your own home: • NHS bowel cancer screening is only offered to people aged 55 or over, as this is when you're more likely to get bowel cancer. • if you're 60 to 74, you'll automatically be invited to do a home testing kit every 2 years • if you're 75 or over, you can ask for a home testing kit every 2 years by calling the free bowel cancer screening helpline on 0800 707 60 60 • If you're too young for screening but are worried about a family history of bowel cancer, speak to your GP for advice. Always see a GP if you have symptoms of bowel cancer at any age – don't wait to have a screening test. Breast Screening Women can’t afford to skip breast screens. There’s a one in eight chance of being diagnosed with breast cancer by the age of 85 and over 75% of breast cancers are detected in women over 50. Breast screening aims to find breast cancers early. It uses an X-ray test called a mammogram that can spot cancers when they're too small to see or feel. If it's detected early, treatment is more successful and there's a good chance of recovery. As the likelihood of getting breast cancer increases with age, all women aged from 50 to their 71st birthday who are registered with a GP are automatically invited for breast cancer screening every 3 years. Screening is recommended regardless of family history as nine out of 10 women diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history of the disease. Yet some women remain sceptical of the need to get screened or find themselves putting it off. If you're worried about breast cancer symptoms, such as a lump or an area of thickened tissue in a breast, or you notice that your breasts look or feel different from what's normal for you, do not wait to be offered screening. For more details, speak to your GP or visit www.nhs.uk/breast Cervical Screening Women aged 25-29 are the least likely to attend for screening of any age group. Surveys indicate embarrassment and a lack of understanding of the causes of cervical cancer may be behind the fall in numbers attending. Don’t let embarrassment prevent you having your cervical screening. • Every day in the UK 9 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer and around 2 women lose their lives from the disease • Cervical cancer is the most common cancer in women under 35 • 75% of cervical cancers can be prevented by cervical screening (smear tests) • However, 1 in 4 women do not attend this potentially life-saving test What does cervical screening involve? • Cervical screening checks the health of your cervix. It's not a test for cancer; it's a test to help prevent cancer. • All women and people with a cervix, aged 25 to 64, should be invited by letter. Women aged 25 to 49 are invited every 3 years. After that, women are invited every 5 years until the age of 64. • During the screening appointment, a small sample of cells will be taken from your cervix. • The sample is tested for changes to the cells of your cervix. • Finding abnormal changes early means they can be monitored or treated so they do not get a chance to turn into cervical cancer. • You usually get the results within 2 to 6 weeks. If you get a call back please don’t panic it doesn’t mean it is cancer. Arrange the follow-up appointment and discuss your concerns with your Doctor or Nurse. For more information and support about going for cervical screening, results and treatment, contact Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust by calling the Helpline on 0808 802 8000 Wishing You a Happy and Healthy 2020

Tidy Town volunteers wish you all a very happy, healthy and prosperous new year We are very pleased to advise that during 2019 we collected 165 bags of rubbish, 72 bags of recycling and 46 bags of green waste. Looking back on last years figures and the first six months of this year, we are very pleased to note that litter appears to be on the decline. We are extremely grateful to everyone who has joined the picks this year to make our group the success it has become. Through our Tidy Town activities we have widened our circles of friendships and involvement in the community, assisting with some community events, which we have very much enjoyed. Grateful thanks to Morrisons, who kindly hosted the last apres pick in December, providing festive goodies, crackers et al. Details of picks for January will be sent early in the new year. Are you someone who would benefit from help with driving or do you know an older driver who needs some advice and support? The FREE Suffolk Roadsafe ‘GrandDriver’ scheme is run by Suffolk Highways Road Safety Team. Its aim is to keep older drivers driving safely for as long as possible. There are two parts to the scheme: a theory workshop and a driving assessment. The workshop lasts for 2.5 hours and we discuss how driving has changed, and how to cope with this as we get older, how our health can affect driving, and simple adaptations you can make to ensure your comfort in the car. There is a chance to discuss any concerns you may have about driving. We also have a refresh on the Highway Code and do some hazard perception. The driving assessment is arranged at a time and place to suit you, takes place in your own car and lasts for around an hour. The trainer will discuss any aspects of the drive that are increasing your risk and offer suggestions and alternatives to reduce your risk. You will receive a written report outlining all that was discussed. Both the workshops and the driving assessments are currently free of charge to attend. The next workshop is on 3 February 2020 in Hadleigh. I understand that two members of Hadleigh Town Council have resigned leaving two vacancies. New members will be sought to stand for council and if enough people are interested there could be an election for these two places. It is difficult to comment on how the current council is progressing, they have chosen to run the council quite differently from the way that the Council has been run since its inception in 1974, but unfortunately at the time of typing this letter we have only seen one set of minutes of their meetings in the Community News, and their minutes have not been on the Town Council web site. It is possible that they have been on Facebook but that is something to which I and many other residents do not subscribe. The Hadleigh Community News has for years kept us up to date with the councils progress and how individual councillors perform which enables residents to know who to support at election time, so at the moment we are blind as to how our councillors are leading the Town. This Councils election promise was for ‘Openess and Transparency’ suggesting that previous councillors had been acting in secret, which as all minutes of Town Council and committee meetings were reported in full in the Community News could not have been more open, and if as suggested that there were secret meetings I obviously, including my two years as Mayor, never knew of them or was included in them. The Town Council is continuing through its period of change, including continuous changes in office staffing. I look forward to seeing some settlement with the new Town Clerk when he starts and with all of the staff vacancies being filled and hope to be able to follow their progress through all of their minutes being in the Community News. However the important thing at this moment is that more residents are able to know what the Council is doing and make the choice to stand for the vacancies and lead our Town forward. Jan Byrne

Well Above the Parapet Cllr Mick Fraser - Suffolk County Council Babergh District Council – Hadleigh South May I take this opportunity to wish everybody happiness, prosperity and good health for the New Year. My expectations for 2020 have improved somewhat after the recent general election result. I hope now that the Westminster Government can resolve its Brexit plans giving the time for the various departments to return to normal operations. Two issues I hope will change for the better are: the decriminalization of parking in Suffolk soon, with the introduction of Civil Parking Enforcement (CPE); and a fairer funding settlement so that the counties are treated with more parity to the metropolitan boroughs. The long-delayed transfer of CPE from police to local authorities in Suffolk, is expected to take place from the end of January. Babergh DC will then be enabled to enforce parking restrictions, rather than the Police. This should go some way to combating inconsiderate parking around the town, particularly along the High Street. It should also assist us in identifying more clearly what on and off-street parking shortfall there might be in the town. With respect to funding, it frustrates me a lot that residents in the London and metropolitan boroughs have more spent on them per head than we do. It’s a significant difference, more than 40% and I will continue to press our MP to fight for a fairer settlement for us. Hadleigh Quarry The operators of the quarry have submitted a number of planning applications to Suffolk County Council (SCC) so that they can increase extraction of aggregates from the quarry on Aldham Mill Hill. A significant issue from these applications is the proposed increase in HGV traffic exiting onto the A1071 by-pass. This increase would be from 8 movements per day up to 80 in any 4-week period; a 10fold increase! I have expressed my concerns to SCC over this especially with respect to road safety at that junction and further along the A1071 towards Hintlesham. This increase in quarrying activity might also lead to excessive noise and dust levels which would breach the current conditions set down currently. I am working with SCC officers to see what best can be done and have asked SCC Highways to examine the effect of this increase in HGV traffic and carryout detailed surveys as appropriate. It must be considered though, that building materials will be required for the new building developments planned in and around Hadleigh. It would be far better to source sand, gravel, and other aggregates locally rather than have them shipped in from further afield. These applications will go before the SCC Planning Committee for decision in February. Benton Street I am delighted that Hadleigh Town Council has voted unanimously in favour to support the preferred traffic management option for trial and installation in Benton Street. A great deal of consultation has taken place with residents and various groups from the town over the various design plans to tackle pedestrian safety on the footways there. The option which has received the greatest consensus and is most likely succeed, is to realign the on-street parking provision at various points. This will allow for better visibility and two-way traffic flow, especially at the narrowest points. It is my ambition that the trial is installed early next year in time for a camera traffic survey in August when the last one was conducted. I am confident it will be successful and if so, the scheme will become a permanent traffic regulation order installation. Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service rated “Good” in Government inspection I am very proud to report that Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service has undergone its most comprehensive, independent inspection in many years and has been rated as “Good” for its effectiveness, efficiency and how well it leads and manages its staff. The findings come from a report by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services (HMICFRS), who inspected Suffolk’s service earlier this year. Inspectors reviewed every aspect of the service, from how it responds to 999 calls, to looking at policies and interviewing a wide range firefighters and staff. The report praised many aspects of the service, particularly how well it collaborates with other blue-light services and agencies, how it responds to fires and other emergencies, how it ensures fairness and promotes diversity, and the financially sound way the service is run. HMICFRS has now completed its first inspection of all 45 fire and rescue services across the country. These will continue to happen regularly, and it is proposed Suffolk will be inspected again in 2021. My monthly surgery will be held on the third Saturday, 18th January 2020, between 11am – 12pm in the Sharron Elliott lounge of the Royal British Legion Club, George St. Should you need to speak to me about an issue, then please contact me at - email: mick.fraser@suffolk.gov.uk or mick.fraser@babergh.gov.uk; Tel: 0793 551 2591; or facebook: @mickfraser4hadleigh. SEH BAC completes successful renovation project at Castle Hill Community Centre An award-winning home improvement company has completed a complex installation at a local community centre, helping to give the facility a new lease of life. Ipswich-based SEH BAC, which specialises in windows, doors and conservatories was tasked with replacing the tired timber windows of the Castle Hill Community Centre. In total, the team replaced 41 timber casement, sash and secondaryglazed windows, along with over 120 metres of guttering. The project presented a number of challenges as the community centre is located within a conservation area. With strict renovation guidelines in place, the team at SEH BAC attended four meetings with conservation officers to prove their replacement solution was in keeping with the period design of the 19th century building. SEH BAC suggested uPVC sliding sash windows, which are designed to stay true to the traditional design and joinery methods of original timber windows. By using modern uPVC, the community centre can effectively reduce their energy bills by improving performance and eliminating draughts and cold spots. Garath Jones, Centre Manager at Castle Hill comments: “We want to thank SEH BAC for their fantastic work renovating Castle Hill. Our old, single-glazed windows had certainly seen better days and were contributing to our rising energy costs. The new windows not only look fantastic, but ensure we can continue to support local residents and groups for many more years to come. “We approached a number of different companies and SEH BAC were easily head and shoulders above the rest. We were greatly impressed by their professionalism, especially as SEH BAC fully cooperated with the recommendations of the IBC Conservation officer. John Savage, Managing Director SEH BAC adds: "It’s been our great privilege to help renovate the wonderful Castle Hill Community Centre. Their team does some fantastic work within the local community, so it was a real no-brainer for us to take on the project, and to help in any way we could. “We’ve been operating across the region for over 45 years, and we take great pride in being able to use our expertise to help homeowners and community causes complete important renovations. We’re absolutely delighted with the finished project, but most importantly, so were the Castle Hill team, which is fantastic to hear.” Operating across the South-East, East Anglia and the Home Counties, SEH BAC was recently named Company of the Year (South-East) by the Master Window and Conservatory Installers Association (MWCIA). The team also received the coveted ‘Consumer Confidence’ award from the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC). For more information, call 0800 666 444 or visit www.sehbac.com

Hadleigh Bowling Club Now you might think things go quiet over the winter but like the British Empire, the sun never sets on the bowling club. You can’t keep a good bowler down (or even some of the others!) and they stay busy over the winter. We have teams playing regularly in the Ipswich and District indoor leagues, braving cold, dark evenings and travelling to the ends of, well not exactly the earth, but at least to Ipswich and beyond like the heroes they are. The Weavers were promoted this season and are currently 5th in the 1st Division, while the demoted Spinners are 1st in the 2nd Division. Are you keeping up? Our internal competitions are going strong, possibly even as strong as the socialising which keeps coming round fast with buffets, dinners and quizzes. The Christmas draw next up is a sell out, as is the New Year’s Eve dinner at the Bell in Kersey. And looking ahead, the old romantics have even started organising the next Valentine’s Day party (did you think I was going to say massacre? Well, you may turn out to be right...). Meantime the club captain is organising league teams and the friendly games against touring sides for the summer season. And since Hadleigh on Show more people have contacted us to have a go at bowling. If you fancy trying indoor short-mat during the winter, ask any member you know or contact Jan on 01473 828212 and she will organise it for you

Eight members of a Hadleighbased church fellowship braved the cold and wet nights on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th December to draw attention to the increasing plight of homeless people – and raised over £2000 for charities tackling the issues associated with homelessness. The eight, whose ages ranged from 13 to people in their 60s, used sleeping bags but not tents within the grounds of Hadleigh United Reformed Church (URC), which is based in the town’s Market Place. Hadleigh URC was participating in the World’s Big Sleep Out, which as the name suggests is a global initiative aimed at addressing this growing problem. The fellowship’s minister, the Revd. Bryn Rickards, said: “we wanted to show solidarity for those millions who have no place of their own in which to sleep, with many forced onto the streets where they suffer terrible mental and physical anguish. “Jesus had a particular focus on and love for society’s marginalised and vulnerable and at Hadleigh URC we always strive to witness to His actions and words. This was another opportunity to do just that. “Whilst all of us looked forward to sleeping in our beds the following night, for most homeless people all they can look forward to is yet another cold and dangerous experience for weeks, months and even years ahead. We did, however, gain an insight into the uncomfortableness of sleeping on the streets.” The volunteers received donations from many people from the town and beyond, including £244 during last Sunday’s collection. “Thank you to everyone who gave both money and other support” added Bryn. Even before that last figure had been added, Hadleigh URC was reported on the World’s Big Sleep Out website has having received the eight largest total contributions in the ‘Host Your Own Events’ category (https://www.bigsleepout.com/). Hadleigh Orchestra We thank everybody who supported our concert on December 8th, we have had many appreciative comments from members of the audience and as a result of your generosity we have been able to send a cheque for £430 to the ‘Christmas Present Trust’ which provides a free Christmas dinner to those who are on their own over Christmas in Hadleigh. Once again we express our grateful thanks to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church for allowing us to hold our Christmas Concert there. Rehearsals next term will begin on Monday January 13th. If you would like to join the Orchestra, or come and have a look with a view to joining, please give me a ring on 01473 827242, or Lynn on 01206 323636 or see our website. We have vacancies in most sections John Druce (Chairman)

Pause for Thought What was your Christmas all about? Some will say parties, others might say presents and cards, still others eating and drinking. You know what? One of those is absolutely right, it’s presents! Yes, Christmas is all about a special gift. This gift is absolutely free as well, no credit card or loan needed. God sent his Son, Jesus as a gift for us all. It doesn't matter who you are, what you have or haven't done, who you upset, who you cheated or even worse than that. If you accept the free gift of Jesus and then through reading the Bible begin to see all that he has done for you, then the gift gives you access to peace, joy and best of all, eternal life in heaven. Just accept this free gift and feel the benefit in 2020 and forevermore. Luke 2:14 ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on Earth peace, goodwill to all men’. Kenny Sanderson

New Year Cycling Resolutions

5 High Street,, Hadleigh,, Sufffolk,, IP7 5AB 55 01473 828129 || info@thepedalhouse.co.uk || www w..pedalhouse.co.ukk

January is the month when we are bombarded with suggestions on how we can change ourselves for the better. Sign up for gym membership, start a new diet, learn a language. So why should the Cycling Club miss out? For those thinking about developing good habits in 2020, cycle commuting is worth considering. You can get and keep fit, lose weight and save money. So what do you need? Well, for a start, you don’t need lycra for cycling around Hadleigh. If your commute is further afield, a helmet, a windproof jacket, a pair of gloves, a set of panniers, a good lock and a bike should be enough. Get your bike serviced by any of the local mechanics. It is worth investing in decent tyres (£25ish) if you want to avoid punctures. There is a great lightly trafficked route from Hadleigh to Ipswich via the Railway Walk, Chattisham, Washbrook and Tesco Park and Ride. It is advisable to do a practise ride at your own pace before your first serious bike commute. You will be commuting not racing so if you go slow enough you may not need to shower! Winter cycling can be glorious and there are often fewer cars on the road. You need to check out the weather forecast and you’ll need lights if you are going to start or finish your journey in the dark. Why not try our Sunday morning social rides from the George starting at 9am, weather permitting. Adults and “capable children accompanied by an adult” are all welcome. The distance is around 25 miles. Check out our Facebook page. Visit www.hadleighcyclingclub.co.uk or connect with the club via Facebook: Hadleigh Cycling Club @HadleighCycling.

Hadleigh Community Choir So there we were in the URC singing our winter concert, apparently with the help of four of Santa’s little helpers who’d crept in the back – but hey, we’re a community choir so we welcome anyone, though I’m wondering why they weren’t back in Lapland actually wrapping my presents. The concert was in aid of Fresh Start, New Beginnings, a local charity working with abused children and their families, and we’d like to thank the large audience for all their generous donations. We delivered 17 songs capturing the wide range of events and emotions that people experience around Christmas; you know, joy, church bells, snowmen, the birth of Jesus, festive celebrations, peace on earth, and breaking up with your girlfriend (well, I know, but it’s a lovely tune called A Winter’s Tale). Now for a short break until 16 January when we launch in to rehearsals for the summer concert. Happy Christmas and thank you to all those who come to our concerts thus supporting the different charities involved. If you enjoy singing or you’d like to try it, come along when we practice on Thursdays at 7.30pm at the United Reformed Church in Hadleigh. You’ll be very welcome. contact-us@hadleighcommunitychoir.org.uk www.hadscommunitychoir.onesuffolk.net Facebook: Hadleigh Community Choir

Hadleigh Walkers Our first walk of 2020 on Saturday 11th January will again be a circular walk starting and finishing in Hadleigh but this time heading North. We will leave Stonehouse Road at 0930 and walk to Adlham Hall, Samson’s Lodge, Barrard’s Hall, across the fields to Whatfield, then head towards Ash Street, cut down towards Cosford Hall, then to Ivytree Farm, Peyton Hall and back into Hadleigh. The walk is a fairly gentle 8.7 miles with pleasant rolling Suffolk views. We should be back in Hadleigh around 1230. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground will be muddy or rough in places. At this time of the year tracks and roads can be icy – wrap up warmly as it’s easier to strip off layers than put them on as we go round. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site. For further information about these walks go to www.hadleighwalkers.com, email us from the website contact page or contact Mike Keeling on 01787 210104 or 07483 887658

RETAIL MOTOR INDUSTRY FEDERATION

A happy new year to all my readers! What a nice round number we have, it sounds like a cricket match, and its also a leap year. Hmm I wonder if Babs will do something amazing on 29th February? We have been bored rigid in our ‘quiet room’ during the holidays and can’t wait to get working again when the school term starts. We could hear various things happening in the yard outside our door: the maintenance people stopping for a coffee break, the able bodied riders coming to exercise the live herd, the farrier’s visit, the partridges roosting. Yes, I’m sad to say the model hawk has not had any effect on the dear birds who roost on the stables’ ridge. Our gutters are ever blocked! I’m just looking back at some of the happy moments from last term, and here are two gorgeous girls enjoying an unexpected visit to me on account of the bad weather. The small person is Jessica, and the other is Brittany, both Friday regulars whom we love to see. Who is making a resolution to do something extraordinary this year? Here at the Shelley Centre there are many and varied jobs to tackle, and new help is always so welcome. It is outdoor stuff mostly, unless you enjoy the corporate boardroom part of running a company! We have trustees who meet in the warm and dry every other month. I hope I shall meet lots of new faces this month, and welcome all our regular riders and the volunteer team back in good spirits for the challenges ahead. Sudbury & District Citizens Advice I am over 25 and entitled to the National Living Wage, but I suspect I am being underpaid. How can I find out if I’m being paid the right amount, and claim what I am owed from my employer? If you think you’ve been underpaid, you should act quickly, as it’s harder to get your money back three months after the problem arose. Check your payslip to see if there’s been some mistake. You will be able to see the number of hours you’ve worked, the rate you’ve been paid at and if there have been any deductions. Ask your employer to explain anything you don’t understand on your payslip and tell them why you think you have been underpaid. If there was a genuine mistake, ask your employer to pay you straight away. You shouldn’t have to wait until the next payday. If your employer refuses to pay back your wages you can formally raise a grievance, either by writing a letter to your employer or following your company’s grievance procedure. Explain that you haven’t been paid enough and you want them to pay the difference. If this still doesn’t work, you can take your employer to a tribunal. Contact the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS), who will see if your employer will agree to a conciliation process, rather than go to court. Otherwise you can take your employer to a tribunal. Think carefully before starting a tribunal claim as it can be expensive and stressful. If you need any advice or guidance through this process, contact Sudbury & District Local Citizens Advice, Keyse House, Acton Lane, Sudbury, CO10 1QN. Telephone 01787 321400 or 0300 330 115, email advice@sudburycab.org.uk or call in to the drop-in advice sessions Mon to Thurs between 10am and 1pm. We also offer a drop-in advice session on the first Thursday of every month at the Ansell Centre in Hadleigh, no appointment necessary. If you are a patient of the Hadleigh Boxford Group Practice an advice session runs every Tuesday morning between 9.30am and 12.30pm at the Hadleigh surgery. Contact the surgery on 01473 822961 to make an appointment. For further information see www.citizensadvice.org.uk

Fidelis Activity News Lunch Bunch Ladies recently lunched at the Duke of Marlborough in Somersham which was saved from extinction by the local community in 2017. Since then this historical watering hole has gone from strength to strength. It now serves delicious freshly cooked food from Wednesday to Sunday and their Sunday Lunches are very special. Lunch Bunchers enjoyed a private room so lively conversation was not an issue and there was plenty of that. The pub’s rescue tale is inspirational https://thedukeofmarlborough.com/about/ Humour and Music When Ray Spiller combines his comedian and DJ skills the result is a very funny unusual musical evening. Ray’s record collection has all the number one hits since charts began in 1954. The music played was a combination of members’ requests and Ray’s choice to challenge members’ memories. There was plenty of laughter in the hall as the familiar tunes were punctuated with Ray’s extensive collection of jokes. Everyone agreed The Spillers with it was a welcome break from the gloomy Chairwoman Liz Wilson weather, Christmas preparations and the shenanigans in Westminster. Helmingham Hall A large group braved the elements to visit the Christmas version of the ornamental gardens at this magnificent residence. Once across the drawbridge, a glass of mulled wine in the impressive courtyard set visitors up for the leisurely walk ahead. The manicured gardens were transformed into a seasonal light show with soft background music. The illuminations subtly highlighted trees and bushes to create magical colours and illusions. There was an opportunity enroute to top up with refreshments, including toasted marshmallows, before completing the trail at the knick knack shops. A peaceful, relaxing experience and well worth navigating the soggy lanes and paths to complete it. Present Laughter Captured live from The Old Vic in London members were able to enjoy a Noel Coward’s 1939 play closer to home at The Quay, Sudbury. Originally ‘Sweet Sorrow’ this revamped updated version is now called Present Laughter. Andrew Scott and several other talented, familiar faces gave a highly charged performance of this fast moving, semi-autobiographical comedy. All the very best for the coming year to the faithful followers of the Fidelis’ column

First Team Round Up Our scheduled home match against Whitton Utd on Nov 23rd fell victim to the weather with a new date yet to be arranged. Our next match was a trip to Ely City on 30th Nov, Ely like us are at the wrong end of the table so this was a vital match to win, we came away with our first win after five defeats with a narrow 3-2 victory with Joel Glover scoring 2 goals, Brett Crisp the other. Saturday 7th Dec saw the visit of Walsham-le-Willows who since changing manager have recorded some fine wins to move up the table, another vital match for us to win, which we did winning 3-2. Brett Crisp got us on level terms after Walsham took the lead, Walsham regained the lead but a fine free kick by Joel Glover put us level at half time, an even second half ensued with a draw looking the likely outcome, but a wonder 30 yard shot from Kyle Cassell just before full time ensured we gained another useful three points. Reserve Team Round Up November 23rd saw us return from Framlingham with only one point from a 2-2 draw in a match played on a wet surface. The scheduled Chell Trophy semi-final match against Cornard Res on 26th Nov was called off due to a waterlogged Millfield pitch, however this match went ahead on Tuesday 10th Dec with the match played in atrocious weather as just on kick the wind got up to gale force accompanied by heavy rain, we were 2 goals down after 30 minutes, but Joel Glover pulled a goal back just before half time. Kyle Cassell got us on level terms early in the second half, with the match looking to go to a penalty shoot out, sub Michael Carrigan gave us victory when he fired in an unstoppable shot from distance. Prior to this match we had a fine 3-0 at home against Mildenhall, before losing 3-2 away at Walsham Res who we will meet in the final of the Chell Trophy date to be arranged. Under 18's Round Up Wednesday 20th Nov home action against leaders Leiston saw an inspired all round team performance as we secured a 4-2 victory, but our somewhat season of mixed fortunes continued as a trip to Needham Market saw us on the wrong end of a 9-2 defeat. Looking to get back to winning ways against Whitton at home on the 4th Dec, after a goalless first half we took the lead through George Clayton Leeks, only to let the visitors back in with an early leveller they then went on to score two more goals to see a 3-1 defeat. Veterans The Vets winning ways continue with a fine win away at AFC Kesgrave on 1st Dec with a 4-2 win goals from Simon Hyde (2) and 1 each by Sean Fenton & Greg Hills. Sunday a visit to Felixstowe saw the Vets progress in a 2nd round Cup match with a superb 7 -1 victory with Paul Dodsworth on fire after a lengthy injury scoring 5 of the goals, with Steve Barton scoring the other 2 in this all round team performance. Stoke By Nayland Golf Club Supporting Men’s Mental Health On Saturday 7th December the Stoke by Nayland Golf Club Men’s Yuletide was played on the Gainsborough course. Despite recent bad weather a fabulous day was had in good conditions, and the course held up well thanks to the efforts of the greenkeepers. There were 52 players in the field playing for the prizes of fresh turkeys for the first three places. Darren Renshaw and Conor Garvey won first prize with a better ball score of 48 points. After the golf the players enjoyed a Xmas lunch followed by a horse race afternoon. Picture shows Ryan Curtis, The event was held to launch the Chris Lloyd, Richard Allen Men’s Captain’s Charity for 2020. and Cyril Williams, Vice-Captain Richard Allen, the new Men’s Captain, introduced Ryan Curtis from The Club Talks, a charity that boosts mental health through golf. Ryan talked about how mental health is the biggest killer of men under 45 years and the cause of 18 deaths every day! Chris Lloyd, a current European Tour Golfer then spoke about his own mental health challenges. The whole day raised £343 towards the charity. The money raised through the year is split 50% to CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably) a national mental health charity, and 50% for training golf clubs in Mental Health First Aid.

Suffolk Rockets Netball Club As we come to the end of 2019 we look back at all our achievements this year including our u13 juniors winning their league, doing well at tournaments, qualifying for u14 regional league and recently finalists in the u16 ENG nationals, and the staggering figure of 19 girls selected for Suffolk Performance Academies. As well as this more girls have joined us from September, and we have enquiries from parents weekly showing the rise in popularity for Netball. Our Adult teams have grown this year from 2 to 4 teams, our 'Back to Netball' teams have improved significantly with one team being promoted and the second team winning 4 games out of 7 so far, our other two adult teams are currently undefeated in division 1 and 3. Thanks to the Netball World Cup being in Liverpool this year it has attracted more ladies to take up the sport which they once loved at school, our Back to Netball club is thriving and we continue to invite any new players to join us! We still run our Walking Netball sessions which are popular especially for ladies who want to get back into sport but at a more relaxed pace. As well as player and team success the club won Most Outstanding Suffolk Netball Club 2019 and our u13 Team won most Outstanding Team at the Suffolk Netball Awards. We also achieved out Bronze CAPs award from England Netball. We are really looking forward to what 2020 may bring, if you would like to be a part of our journey please email Hayley at suffolkrocketsnc@hotmail.com and have a look at our website www.suffolkrocketsnetballclub.weebly.com We wish everyone an amazing Christmas and New Year!
