RDA Celebrates 50 Years

This year the RDA celebrates 50 years of official business. There were small groups in existence before the Riding for the Disabled Association was founded, but we all come under one big umbrella now, which ensures our standards are kept high and our work gets the publicity it deserves. In addition to that anniversary, 2019 marks the 30th year of our group’s foundation! So watch this space for news of all our celebrations and parties to come and keep some gaps in your diaries to join us. Last month the Centre put on its 20th Annual Carol Service! We were lucky with the weather again and the yard was full of our families and friends. Refreshments at The Centre were lavish as usual, and much appreciated. Rev. Sue Foster took the service, with a talk by Father Jo Delfgou, the new Rector of Hadleigh and Shelley. Members of Serendipity Choir and the Boxted Methodist Silver Band made a huge contribution to the music and singing for which we were most grateful. Our Baby Jesus was very well behaved and the angels and wise men did their bit too. Our Ponies were represented in Church by lanterns on the Altar. It was a lovely end to the term, and thank you to Margaret for all her organisation and the hard work of her team on that Saturday in December. During the Christmas holidays the Centre was closed for business as normal. Best wishes for 2019, and see you in February folks. Website: www.rda-east.org.uk/shelley.html Telephone: 01473 824172

Couples save between 16% and 21% when making Wills A new Wills service from Holmes & Hills Solicitors in Sudbury means couples now save between 16% and 21% on legal fees when making Mirror Wills at the same time. Married couples, civil partners and co-habiting couples will benefit from the saving. Why make a Will at all? Quite simply, if you do not make a Will the law says who inherits your estate. Most people assume that everything would pass automatically to their partner but this is not necessarily so and certainly if you are not married or in a civil partnership, they will have no automatic right to inherit any part of your estate. Your estate may pass to the person or persons you would not want to inherit. It may result in financial hardship for your loved ones or an expensive court action. Making a Will ensures that the people you want to benefit when you die receive your estate. Holmes & Hills Solicitors are experienced to be able to draft a Will that is tailor made to meet your specific requirements. Our clients often wish to receive advice as follows: • How to update an existing Will • How to leave their estate in the most tax efficient way • How to provide and protect young children – who will look after your children if you die, where will they live and who will look after the money they inherit? • How to provide for a disabled child or adult • Provide for children from a former relationship • How to set up a trust • How to provide for vulnerable adult children perhaps going through a divorce or financial problems • How to plan for future care needs • How to protect your contribution to the purchase price of a property when you live with someone else* • How to give away an inheritance in a tax efficient manner** Declaration of Trust * Deed of Variation **

If you have children from a previous relationship Making a Will is very important for couples who may have children from previous relationships and want to ensure that their money will pass to their own family. No better time to make a Will – save up to 21% There really is ‘no time like the present’ for you and your partner to make your Wills. If Holmes & Hills did not draft your existing Will it doesn’t matter, we are still able to advise you and prepare a new one should you wish to do so. Call us to ask about making your Wills Call Holmes & Hills Solicitors on 01376 320456 (Essex) or 01787 275275 (Suffolk)

Arthur Gaell for Apprenticing Foundation Registered Charity No: 310317

Calling All Apprentices and Businesses Hiring Apprentices or offering in-employment training We are delighted to be able to say that we were able to make grants to two deserving applicants in October. One who is serving an apprenticeship at an estate agency in Hadleigh and one who is an apprentice artworker. We are hugely grateful to the Mayor of Hadleigh, Councillor Peter Matthews, who has chosen the Arthur Gaell for Apprenticing Foundation as one of his charities to benefit from his fund-raising whilst he is in office. This was completely unexpected and so completely wonderful. Thank you Peter, from all of us. Our main criteria, as laid down by the founder of this charity way back in the mists of the 17th Century, is that grants will only be made to those living within the IP7 postcode. Their apprenticeship can be anywhere, so long as they live in IP7. A lot of people appear to think the IP7 postcode is limited to Hadleigh so we would like to change this perception and invite applicants from: Aldham & Aldam Tye, Ash Street, Bacon’s Green, Bildeston, Bird Street, Brettenham, Chelsworth, Cobblers Corner, Cook’s Green, Cross Green, Drakestone Green, Elmsett, Great Bricett, Greenstreet Green, Hadleigh, Hadleigh Heath, Hitcham, Kersey, Kersey Tye, Kersey Upland, Kettlebaston, Layham, Lower & Upper, Lindsey, Lindsey Tye, Milden, Monks Eleigh, Monks Eleigh Tye, Naughton, Nedging, Nedging Tye, Oaks Tye, Raydon & Lower Raydon, Rose Green, Semer, Shelley, Stackyard Green, Swingleton Green, The Woodlands, Water Run, Wattisham, Wattisham Airfield, Wattisham Stone, Whatfield, Wicker Street Green, William’s Green, Wolves Wood. (Phew!) OK, own up – who knew the IP7 postcode stretched so far! So anyone who is looking to start employment or undertake further training whilst you are in employment, and would appreciate some assistance with outfits, clothing, tools, instruments and books, just let me know and I will send you an application form. It is that simple. We are heading inexorably into 2019 so why not encourage someone you know to make a New Year’s resolution: to give themselves or a friend, a present and get some assistance from us. We hope you had a very happy festive season and that 2019 brings you all that you need. We look forward to hearing from you and helping you where we can. How Can We Help You? We are happy to invite applications from anyone who has finished their education and is looking for assistance into an employed apprenticeship. We will also consider ongoing in-employment training. You must be resident in the IP7 postcode area (see above). Application forms can be obtained from jessicanevard@btinternet.com or by calling 01473 822671. All applications will be discussed by the Trustees at their quarterly meetings (January, April, July & October) and all applicants will be informed of the Trustees’ decision at the earliest opportunity following the relevant meeting. How Can You Help Us? We are a very small charity and are happy to remain so. However, if we are to help apprentices and those continuing their training, we also need support. We are not currently looking to undertake any formal fundraising (we simply do not have the time or manpower) but if any businesses or charitable benefactors in the IP7 postcode would consider offering us any form of funding, we would love to have a conversation with you. Again, please contact Jess Janas at jessicanevard@btinternet.com or telephone 01473 822671. If you have any questions at all do, please, get in touch. The Trustees thank you for your interest so far and hope to talk further with you. Jessica Janas (Chair), Brian Lazenby, Richard Whiting, Richard Finch and Matt Paisley

Best Wishes For The Coming Year To All Who Read Our Monthly Column Ballet:- A delightful, enchanting performance of The Nutcracker Suite beamed in live to a full audience at Cineworld, Ipswich seemed to signal the start of all things seasonal. Christmas Supper:- Over 40 members attended and much enjoyed the annual Christmas supper at the Hintlesham Golf Club. A welcome drink was followed by a tasty two course meal, coffee and mints creatively wrapped by Lin Slaughter. Service was friendly and attentive Rodin’s The Kiss:- This iconic piece is on loan from The Tate to Christchurch Mansion until 28th April 2019. Members were introduced to the contents of the complete exhibition by Curator, Emma Roodhouse. It was fascinating to hear how it came about, the pieces in it and their connection with each other. Conservationist, Carrie Willis, gave us a remarkable insight into her work conserving some of the neglected pieces from the Museum’s basement. It was good to hear that there is also a link with this town with work by Maggi Hambling and Hadleigh - born sculptor, Thomas Woolner. After the introductory talk members were able to visit the gallery where all the pieces were skilfully displayed. A free exhibition not to be missed. Speaker:- A chance encounter with Turkey over 25 years ago prompted Jenny Gibbs to leave the UK and move permanently to her newly discovered heaven on earth. Dressed in local costume, Jenny recounted her experiences from her first arrival to the present day.it was clear that Jenny was a true Turkish Shirley Valentine. Having learnt the language and bought an old farmhouse with her Liz Wilson and Jenny Gibbs with Turkish partner Mustapha, they traditional Turkish pantaloons now divide their time between their restored abode and Suffolk. After the talk members thoughly enjoyed trying on and buying the many colourful, exotic Turkish scarves and stoles which Jenny had brought along. JD

Exciting News: we have recently enhanced our Nursery provision and are now able to offer increased Forest School experiences in our school woodland. These sessions allow the children to experience nature throughout the seasons, and encourage them to use their senses when exploring. They provide opportunities for the children to develop their physical, communication, social and counting skills as well as increasing their confidence and self-esteem. We have regular fires at our base camp where we cook delicious snacks. Other activities include climbing trees and ladders, balancing, swinging, bug hunting, mud play, using real tools (such as saws, peelers and knives) and playing listening games. Sessions are led by Caroline Lee, our Nursery qualified teacher and a Level 3 Forest School Leader. A team of assistants are available to support her: Reece and Steph who are both qualified Nursery practitioners and Katie who is our Early Years Educator Apprentice. Reece and Steph are booked to do the Level 2 Forest School assistants course. If you are looking for an exciting and unique experience for your, child then please get in touch and arrange a visit. We offer both 15 and 30 hour sessions; wrap around care from 7:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. and a dedicated lunch club offering our wonderful school meals (payable). We have an intake each September and take children ages 3/4 for the year leading up to them starting in the Reception year (age 4/5). If your child’s date of birth is between 1.9.15 – 31.8.16 and you would like to be considered for a place in September 2019, please complete our application form which can be obtained from the school office or by visiting our website https://hadleigh-suffolk.securedbprimary.com/suffolk/primary/hadleigh. We will start offering places during the Spring Term 2019. Key Stage 1 - Year 1 Congratulations to all of Year One for a fantastic performance of Prickly Hay. The children all worked very hard and looked brilliant in their costumes. The show had singing, dancing, acting, musicians, stage hands and even a SHREW! The play told the story of the birth of Jesus from the perspective of the stable boy Sam and his friend Shrew. The children impressed everyone who watched them perform and brought Christmas cheer. Music The lead up to Christmas has been non-stop with lots of productions. Reception and Year 1 have been busy with their plays while Nursery have been preparing some lovely Christmas songs. The choir and instrumentalists have been involved in several Community performances including the Baptist Church, Magdalen House and Sydney Brown Court Care Homes.

A Huge Thank You from the Alison Fracella Research Trust and the Brendan Oakes Trust A huge thank you to everyone who came along to the Ansell Centre on Saturday 24th November to give us, once again, such wonderful support at our 7th joint Quiz Night. The Centre was packed for the event, we had 19 teams! Everyone said what a great evening it was with lots of fun and laughter. The anagram round was quite a challenge although our Congratulations to the Winning Team winners (for the second year running!) scored an amazing 100%! As usual the Ploughman’s Supper went down well! On the night, after all expenses, we raised a fantastic £1,120 which we have divided between our two charities. Almost every penny raised will go towards the work we are supporting as our charities have minimal administration costs. The Brendan Oakes Trust supports teenagers facing cancer and the Alison Fracella Research Trust is helping to fund research into brain cancer, especially in young people, at the Royal Marsden Hospital. A big thank you to Avis Printers for printing our tickets and for selling them for us in the shop. Special thanks to Sue and Roy, to Kathy, to Heather, to Maria and Paul, to Jenny and Brian, to Neil and Carol, to Graham and Lindsay and to Emma and David for all their hard work. Pilates is a form of exercise and body conditioning devised by German born Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century. It focuses on breathing, alignment, core strength and flexibility. Clinical Pilates uses modified versions of Pilates’ original mat work exercises, making them appropriate for people recovering from injury or those working around specific conditions. At Hadleigh Physiotherapy we offer 1:1, 2:1 sessions or small classes (max 5 clients). Our sessions are delivered by Chartered Physiotherapists and Sports Massage Therapists with a special interest in rehabilitation and Pilates. Our aim is to deliver a personal Pilates service that is achievable, safe and effective. The Team are trained by the Australian Physiotherapy & Pilates Institute (APPI), a leading provider of Physiotherapy treatment, education and products. The APPI have reviewed each of the original Pilates movements and modified them to develop a specialised Pilates programme that reflects current research and can be made suitable for all, regardless of age, experience or fitness levels. Clinical Pilates can help you to: Reduce back & neck pain Experience improved posture Develop better balance & coordination Increase core stability and function Improve flexibility & mobility Relieve stress & tension Increase muscle tone Improve breathing. Clinical Pilates can be used to enhance elite performance athletes by challenging their stability and control in specific movement patterns relevant to their chosen sport, thereby improving overall efficiency and success. Pilates for Pregnant and Postnatal Women We also offer a specialist ‘Bumps and Babies’ Pilates class for pregnant and postnatal women. This class meets the specific needs of women at any stage in the childbearing year. Babies are welcome to attend alongside mums (although no creche facilities are provided). Pregnant and postnatal women are particularly at risk of back and pelvic pain, and pelvic floor muscle dysfunction, as a result of the changes undergone during pregnancy. Pilates is ideally placed to address these changes, and to prevent or ease any aches and pains, or pelvic floor issues experienced. Time to get your guitar out and get out of your room! Would you like the confidence to perform by playing guitar and singing in front of other people? Got the basic chords but want to move on, or feeling a bit rusty and want to polish up your skills? Or maybe you’re a budding songwriter? Then you might enjoy our weekly ‘improvers’ class. Here you can develop your guitar technique and your confidence as a singer and performer in an a small informal group that is both challenging and fun - performing together and also as individuals. The group has been going, with a few changes in members, for over three years now. We work in sessions of six weeks at a time, for which you’ll need to pay up front. If you’re a beginner or would prefer individual tuition that can also be arranged. I can also help with songwriting and have facilities for recording and producing your music. Here’s a creative way to start the new year! So just give me a call or drop a line and I look forward to hearing from you. Name change for Hadleigh Optometry Practice The optometry practice on Queen Street has been under the name of ‘D J Dunstone’ since 1991, when Derek Dunstone took over the long standing ‘Rawlings’ Practice. We have now changed the name to ‘Dunstone Optometry’ to reflect the fact that another Dunstone, Andrew, is a partner and is examining eyes here in Hadleigh. Otherwise all is the same. Michael Giles also examines eyes; he is a respected optometrist and integral part of the team. Our excellent support staff of Kate and Wendy are here to welcome you. Derek and Sally Dunstone are always on hand to help ensure the smooth running of the Practice. Please contact us on 01473 823755 to make an appointment for an eye examination or to view our amazing selection of spectacle frames. See dunstoneinsight.com to find out more

Nic Carter - Community Based Personal Trainer Hello and a happy New Year to you all. I hope that you all had a wonderful Christmas and that your new year is blessed with much happiness and good fortune. At this time of year most of us make New Year resolutions which can be related to our health, wellbeing and fitness. More often than not though these resolutions don’t last, and we can end up going back to our old habits, even before the month of January is out. In order to ensure that you can make resolutions that are achievable and that will last, take smaller steps to reaching your bigger outcomes. Whatever your end goal is, break this down into smaller chunks, i.e. short, medium and long term goals. After all, an elephant can only be eaten one bite at a time (metaphorically speaking). For example, you could aim to reach your long term goal in 3 months and this could be something like, “I would like to reduce my body fat % by 5% and increase my fitness levels. To make this more achievable, your short term goal (within 4 weeks) could be, “I will have a PT session once a week. Your medium term goal (within 8 weeks) could be, “I will have a PT session once a week, run twice a week and aim to lower my body fat % by 2%. By your final 4 week block, as your fitness routine has become embedded, your final goal to ensure your body fat % has decreased by 5% can be achieved, alongside your increasing fitness levels.

New Year, New House The New Year is here and you have decided that you would like to move house. Here are five things to think about when looking for a new property. Look at your budget, What can you afford? Be realistic and remember to factor in moving costs, stamp duty (if you are not a first time buyer), estate agent fees, legal fees, and also any survey fees. It is best to have your finances in order at this stage. Talk to your mortgage broker or your lender if you are obtaining a mortgage. Decide what area you want to move to. Do your research on the area. Are there the facilities you Sam Alvin need to be happy in your new home. Are there plenty of local amenities? Check town or village websites and social media to see what the community is like that you would be moving into. When speaking with estate agents be positive about what you are looking for and your budget. If you don’t want to live in a house in the middle of nowhere tell them. They can only work on what information you give them. Let them know if your property is on the market or inform them that you are a first time buyer. When you short list a property, visit the area at least a couple of times at different times of the day. What may seem like a quiet road during daytime may become hectic in the evening. Also look at parking. If the house you are viewing does not have parking consider the parking areas. Could you park easily when you arrive to view the property? Finally when have found your perfect home, we advise that you have a full Homebuyers Survey. This is different from a lender valuation and involves a surveyor visiting the property to inspect both inside and out. They will then produce a report for your information. This may cost a few hundred pounds but we are sure you would rather pay this than move in and find a nasty shock which could cost thousands. Remember to send the report to your solicitor when briefing them about your move. Happy New Year and happy house hunting. If you are moving house in the new year then contact Sam on 01473 298 189 or email her at sam.alvin@gotelee.co.uk.

Award-winning home improvement specialists SEH BAC are celebrating after winning a prestigious award from the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC). The Ipswich-based firm which specialises in windows, doors and conservatories was named the winner of the highly-coveted ‘Consumer Confidence’ award. Sponsored by TrustMark - a government endorsed quality accreditation, the Consumer Confidence award recognised SEH BAC’s high-levels of customer service and satisfaction. “We are absolutely delighted and incredibly proud to win this fantastic award from the NHIC – our fourth in five years,” comments John Savage, Managing Director of SEH BAC. “Our commitment has always been to deliver a superior quality of service that customers can trust and ultimately recommend to others. It’s an ethos embodied by our entire team from reception, through to our sales team, installers, after-care team and senior management. “It’s an immense honour to receive this high recognition from such a respected body within the home improvement industry. We now head on to the glazing industry’s prestigious G Awards where we are nominated for ‘Customer Care Initiative of the Year’ as we aim to complete a full sweep and finish 2018 on a massive high.” The firm, which is part of Ipswich-based One Group Construction – a £160m group of specialist construction companies, first won an NHIC Award back in 2014 picking up the ‘Best Glazing Project’ award. In 2015 and 2017, SEH BAC were awarded the prestigious ‘Community Benefit’ award for their work across the region. The gong last year recognised their transformation of West Cliff Theatre in Clacton-on-Sea as part of their Community Giveaway competition. Award success continues an impressive year for the business with SEH BAC achieving a score of 9 out of 10 on online review site Trustpilot – with 81% of customers leaving an ‘Excellent’ five-star rating. They have also achieved a market-leading ‘Net Promoter Score’ of 8.9 out of 10. The Net Promoter Score (NPS) is a world-renowned customer experience indicator used by global brands like Apple and Amazon to quiz customers on their service, satisfaction and likelihood to recommend the company to friends or relatives. SEH BAC, which operates 15 showcentres across the South East, East Anglia and the Home Counties, is aiming to complete the double by winning at the G Awards 2018. At the event last year, SEH BAC was named ‘Installer of the Year’, beating over 13,000 glazing companies from across the country to win the industry’s most coveted prize. www.sehbac.com

Hadleigh Cycling Club planning for 2019 There was a terrific turnout at Hadleigh Cycling Club’s AGM and Xmas meal when the Committee thanked those standing down and welcomed new members. Mike Motteram will continue in the role of Chairman, supported by an enthusiastic Committee which has been strengthened with the inclusion of Tim Collins who will be managing the website and Fiona Holland, the new membership secretary. Mike stressed “the importance of continuity and thanked the Secretary, Simon King and Treasurer, Nick Wilder for their hard work to ensure the Club runs effectively.â€? Simon will also continue to coach the Juniors in Spring 2019 along with Martin Nichols, Adam Chamberlain, Perrie Higgs and Gale Pryor. The Club is hoping to train up new Level 1 coaches early in the New Year. “We’re already looking to encourage new riders in the Spring with Farhad Abdly and Julian Cecil taking on the lead in organising Sunday social rides. Gale Pryor, Kate Billingham, and Lucy Jay will again be working with women who want to take up riding.â€? Rickaby Shearly-Sanders, Phil Barnes (Time Trials), Lucy Jay (Parents Rep) and Sue Calver (Welfare) have all agreed to continue on the Committee. The Committee thanked departing Chris Heron, Ride Lead and Coach for all his efforts to steer the Club over the years, Paul Harman and Ben Lowe who has been our Junior Rep. Bowza the ‘Hadleigh Hero’ While just started our walk myself and Bowza came across a 79 year old lady laying in the road, she was going into shock and hypothermia and people near by kindly came out with a mat but the lady could not move as it was later established she had a broken hip. The lady was turning blue and shivering so I asked my dog Bowza to lay down alongside her, I did not know if he would, as although Bowza is a very intelligent dog he will do what he wants, however I did manage to get him to lay down beside the lady and he was like that for over an hour. It seemed he knew the lady was in trouble and I am very proud of him, the ambulance took over three and a half hours to get to the lad. Bowza is now known as ‘The Hadleigh Hero’. He later appeared on BBC Look East, BBC Radio and in The Times Newspaper. The medics said if Bowza had not kept her warm it could have been a different story. The lady who does not want to be named had an operation for a broken hip, she is home now and doing well. Don Cox

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk When I last wrote this column I chose the subject of supporting local shops in the run up to Christmas. I did receive one stern email complaining that I had not written about Brexit. I am afraid that reader will be disappointed again. Frankly, events are moving so fast in Westminster that by the time this is in print who knows what the latest development will have been, and I cannot help but suspect many of you are heartily sick of endless Brexit debate and just want us to ‘get on with it’. Most importantly, I am determined that Brexit’s dominance of political discourse must not be to the detriment of other critical matters that affect our daily lives. Crime is a key example. I have appeared regularly in Commons debates on crime to state my concern that we seem to be experiencing a shift to a more aggressive era. Aside from the statistics, I have based this principally on the stark reality of a whole series of recent incidents in South Suffolk, the most high profile being ram raids on shops in Hadleigh and Long Melford. But behind the scenes, and particularly in our rural communities, there is great anxiety about a range of crimes we probably don’t even hear about – theft of machinery, hare coursing, and the intimidation and vandalism associated with the latter. I was therefore pleased to hold a summit on rural crime in Lavenham Village Hall last month, attended by the Police and Crime Commissioner and Chief Constable, together with around 100 farmers concerned about criminality. Few attendees had not been a victim of rural crime. Thus, I was pleased that in December’s Police funding settlement the Government announced up to £9m in additional funding for the Suffolk Constabulary, a significant increase, should the PCC choose to use the full powers to raise the council tax ‘precept’ that we have now granted him. If he does so, he will have my full support if this also translates into more resource on the front line and the chance of fighting back on behalf of the law abiding majority.

Rotary Club Of Hadleigh Diary Christmas Collections: At the time of writing the first collection has just taken place raising £165.41. This is a very good start and collectors are looking forward to similar results during the next week when weather permitting the float and Father Christmas will be around the streets and at Morrisons. As you will be reading this after Christmas, Rotary would like to thank you in advance for your generosity. Full results will appear in the February issue. Speaker: Mary Marshall,a first responder, gave members the benefit of her knowledge and experience in this most important voluntary work. She answered numerous pertinent questions and encouraged everyone to learn basic lifesaving techniques as well as how to use a defibrillator. Club Activities: There was only one ordinary meeting in December but the Christmas party took place early in the month and virtually all members and partners/friends enjoyed a jolly evening at the Bildeston Crown. We thank the staff there for looking after us so well. At present forthcoming events are: Early January - traditional Champagne Brunch - Special General Meeting to elect officers for Rotary year 2019/20 Late January - Meeting with speaker who will be Barbara Boyd from Hadleigh Thrift Shop. We had updates from: Tidy Town - There are now 17 volunteers who between them go out twice a week, more of what is collected is going for recycling but fly dipping of various kinds is increasing. Many are appreciative of this group but to avoid littering is for us all to undertake. Community Gardeners - The gardeners worked hard to plant the 200 narcissus bulbs kindly donated by the Co-op. The Rotary club have also planted purple crocuses, in support of the campaign to eradicate Polio worldwide. We look forward to an even better display in the Cedric Morris Gardens, Magdalen Road in the spring when more planting will take place. The two CM Iris beds will shortly have an interpretation board explaining about the origins of his named irises. Patient Participation Group - The Hadleigh and Boxford Health Centres have received praise for the way in which they are caring for patients as individuals. Town Council - Cllr Val Haines will be joining us in the New Year to explain the opportunities to contribute to the development of Hadleigh’s Neighbourhood Plan. Thanks and Appreciation was expressed for those who put up the Christmas Trees along the High Street. District Council - The new market benches will help create a focal point allowing for the development of floral displays around the tree. We shared in a few festive nibbles and watched a pictorial Review of 2018. A patchwork presentation of pictures from 2018 can be seen on the Visit Hadleigh website visithadleighsuffolk.co.uk. Visit Hadleigh will be holding their AGM Monday 28th January 6pm Hadleigh Pool and Leisure. Find out what we are doing to promote tourism in Hadleigh. Tenants of the Medieval Manor of Hadleigh In 1306 there were 224 tenants on the Manor of Hadleigh. Fifty-three were free as were the seventeen from the Boxford Lands – an integral element of the manor (around today’s Wicker Street Green). A further 118 were customary or unfree tenants and 31 were of unknown tenurial status. All tenants paid rent and most free and all unfree tenants had to attend the courts run by Hadleigh Manor. Customary tenants had to undertake a specified number of works or labour services e.g. ploughing reaping, digging, ditching, fencing, carting and permission had to be sought from the lord for their daughters to be married. Tenants lived within and around the town. Probably the most well-to-do tenant was Osbert of Aldham who, in 1306, owned more land than any other (63+ acres). Friendly with Nicholas the Master of Scholars, they were reported brewing ale together in Osbert’s house. Nicholas’s name tells us Hadleigh had an unusually early grammar school - certainly in 1275, possibly even before date. Of the 72 Hadleigh dyers found in the manuscripts Simon the Dyer was, in 1327, the wealthiest. He clearly enjoyed ale and was fined 12d by the court when he built a brew-house near his dye-house on the riverside! He was fined 12d for this daring venture! Another dyer, William the Dyer, was twice penalized 12d for making a pathway across the Tyefield to his dye-house by the River Brett when he was in fact merely taking a daily shortcut to work. Perhaps our most famous Hadleigh tenant was recorded in a Hadleigh Manor manuscript of 1358-59 – Walter Tyler and wife Imogen - paying to rent a holding in Coram Street. You may learn whether this could just possibly have been the renowned Wat Tyler of the 1381 Peasants’ Revolt by reading page 104 of Medieval Hadleigh. Medieval Hadleigh Out now is Margaret Woods’ authoritative account of life in Medieval Hadleigh with special emphasis on the 13th & 14th centuries. Margaret’s primary source of information is her own translations from Latin of the manorial records from the medieval Manor of Hadleigh. In her depiction of the medieval town and manor the real experiences of numerous long-gone Hadleigh residents are recounted and day-to-day activities described - all supported with excerpts from the original manuscripts, colourful illustrations and straightforward tables.

A peaceful New Year to everyone. The start of the New Year is the time for taking stock of one's life and perhaps implementing some changes that will makes us feel more fulfilled, or healthy. Time to do enjoyable things, explore the countryside or read that book we have been promising ourselves to read for ages. Catch up with friends. The list goes on and on. It does not always go to plan and we find ourselves drifting back into our old ways or in that rut. We start off with good intentions but..... We are all guilty of falling by the wayside. If you feel helpless and wish you could find direction in your life and would like to talk to someone who will listen, not make any judgements all in the strictest confidence our qualified, registered healers will do this. Please contact us on telephone: 01473 823282 (answer machine) or log onto www.hadleighealingsociety.org or visit our Facebook page

Want to get fitter in 2019? Hadleigh Hares can help! Have you, like so many people, come out of the Christmas period feeling a little jaded and wishing you had eaten just one less mince pie? Have you decided that this year you are going to get just a bit fitter? Do you want to shake off a couple of pounds? Do you want to meet up with other local people who want to have fun, make friends and get fitter at the same time? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then Hadleigh Hares is for you! Lots of people start the New Year intending to improve their fitness only to find that it becomes a bit of a chore going out in the cold and damp on their own to try and run off last year’s excesses. The trip to the gym after work becomes less frequent as the weeks go on and life gets in the way of all the good intentions. Pretty soon, it can all become too much of a bother and old habits creep back. Before you know it’s back to the same old lifestyle. Joining a club like the Hares can really help you to reach your fitness goals. Being part of a friendly local club puts you together with like minded people, all trying to improve their fitness. Mutual support, friendship and regular club sessions provide a great foundation to take you as far as you want to go - be it running a marathon or jogging around the block once a week. Even if you are already taking part in Parkrun or are out there exercising on your own, being part of a club can give you a structure that can only help and enhance your training and fitness. Whether you have run before or you are a complete novice, Hadleigh Hares has a session to suit you and help you make your New Year’s Resolution a reality. We are always delighted to welcome new faces, and we offer beginners sessions, advanced sessions, ladies only sessions and even triathlon training if you fancy that. Why not find out more on line, on Facebook, or by contacting chair@hadleighhares.co.uk? Back in December, the Club held its annual Awards Night. With a three-course meal and a disco at the Town Hall, the evening saw members receiving trophies in all sorts of categories from Beginner of the Year through to Marathon Runner of the Year and Ironman of the Year. Special mention goes to Scott Ramsey who, by popular vote, won the prestigious Hare of the Year Award. Scott had a great year, culminating in a new club marathon record of 2 hours and 46 minutes which he achieved in Amsterdam. Congratulations to him and to all our other prize winners, all of whom rightfully earned the respect and Scott with his haul of admiration of their fellow Hares. Next year Trophies! it could be you!

The Hadleigh Historian Issue 49 (December 2018 - January 2019) This issue’s front cover features illustrations The Hadleigh Historian from The Luttrell Psalter, 1325-1335, showing The Hadleigh Historian two common farming activities of the time. Issue 49 December 2018 - January 2019 Price £3 They herald a new book that will be of considerable interest to people who live in Hadleigh as well as students of English manorial history. Written by Margaret Woods of Layham, Medieval Hadleigh: the chief manor and the town is on sale now. One feature of medieval agriculture was common land, over which certain manorial tenants held certain rights to graze their livestock and/or to collect firewood. ‘Whatever happened to Hadleigh’s commons?’ identifies four pieces of such land within the parish and investigates their demise as far as common rites were concerned. Fortunately, Oldham Common still supports the people of Hadleigh as it is now a farm administered by a charity, the rent from which assists cases of hardship. For nearly fifty years, borough status was sought by the chief inhabitants of Hadleigh and 400 years ago in December 1618 the town was granted its royal charter. By February the following year, the mayor, seven aldermen and sixteen capital burgesses had drawn up 38 regulations for governing the new borough. Although the idea had been floated that something should be done to mark this occasion, so far there have been no takers. As one of only ten towns in Suffolk to have been given such status, it is a shame that 2018 will slip by without official acknowledgement of this achievement. To address this omission, The Hadleigh Historian begins a series entitled ‘When Hadleigh was a borough’ starting with the ways used by the corporation to let the people know who was in charge. The cinema that once stood in High Street is visited for the occasional series ‘Lost Buildings’. Most contributors to The Hadleigh Historian recalling their memories of the town in the 20th century very fondly mention the Palace (earlier called the Picture House) with its gold-braided blue-uniformed commissionaire at the door. ‘Derrick’s Iron Foundry and its owners, 1830-1915’ takes the story of one important Hadleigh business and traces it to various locations including land now Meadows Way and the town-centre premises on the north corner of High Street and George Street (now M.W. Partridge & Co Ltd). The tale includes a court-room scene in London, when Graham and Joslin were challenged over use of trademarks. New Society President: “everyone must now step up for Suffolk” The Suffolk Preservation Society, the county’s leading heritage charity, has a new president who has begun his term in office with a clear message that everyone connected with the planning system in the county needs to redouble their efforts to make the system work well for present and future generations. Businessman and farmer Geoffrey Probert succeeds Lord Marlesford who served with distinction as the Society’s president for 21 years. Geoffrey is a former executive vice president for Unilever where he was responsible for a £5bn operation. Having recently served as High Sheriff he now runs the family farm in the Stour Valley and steps up into his new role having been a trustee of the Society for four years. Geoffrey said: “firstly I’d like to thank Lord Marlesford for his many years of active support for - and wise counsel to - the Suffolk Preservation Society both in the House of Lords and back in the county. He will certainly be an extremely hard act to follow. “Secondly, I would like to use my time as President to continue the Society’s quest to encourage everyone of goodwill to celebrate our glorious Suffolk countryside and historic built environment, and to be mindful of their responsibility to hand something of enduring value onto our children and their children. “This doesn’t mean trying to stop progress. This doesn’t mean not building houses in the right places and at prices people of all backgrounds can afford. It does mean campaigning to end inappropriate development built to the lowest common design denominator that wittingly or unwittingly will inevitably degrade people’s lives for years to come.” Geoffrey outlined how the Government’s new National Planning Policy Framework, provides opportunities for local players in the planning process having more influence in shaping good development decisions. These include the greater weight given to Neighbourhood Plans where communities can have their say in where they want to see development, the growing recognition that any harm to heritage assets is undesirable, and the greater importance now being given to good design for future buildings - the last being demonstrated by the newly emerging Suffolk Design Guide. “Planners, developers, conservation officers, architects, amenity groups and individuals all have a role in getting each development right. If we all work together to create an evolving Suffolk that fits well into our wonderful heritage, we really can pass on a legacy to be proud of. If we cut corners and go for the cheapest solutions in the wrong places in the wrong way, we will rightly be accused of having failed future generations. Everyone must step up for Suffolk” concluded Geoffrey.

Suffolk Bereavement Support – Why Not Pluck Up The Courage? Does the New Year find you struggling to cope with the aftermath of the festive season at a time when you are also experiencing a delayed reaction to bereavement or perhaps not coping with adjusting to the loss of a loved one? If this applies to you then why not pluck up the courage and join us at one of our Suffolk Bereavement Support groups? Our groups are very friendly and supportive and we encourage our members to share their experiences as we believe this is the best way to offload pent up feelings that may eventually take their toll on us and affect both mental and physical health. New members are not put under any pressure to join in until they feel ready to but we find that most people feel at home very quickly. At each meeting we focus on an aspect of bereavement by way of a short video clip and a presentation. This is designed to help us understand our responses to grief and to stimulate discussion of the wide spectrum of emotions and reactions that can be experienced. Our members frequently testify to how this has helped them cope as they negotiate the path of bereavement towards the point where they are better equipped to move forward with their lives while still treasuring memories of their loved ones. We have planned our meetings so that there should be a group to suit most people. Our afternoon group is held in central Hadleigh on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month from 1.30pm-3.00pm and our Capel St. Mary group meets in the early evening on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month from 6.30pm-8.00pm. Each meeting finishes with refreshments and informal chat. We would love to hear from you if you would like to join us at any time. Hadleigh Orchestra Conductor Kay Bartlett Thank you to everybody who came to our Christmas Concert and helped fill St. Joseph’s Church. I am very pleased to be able to say that we are sending a cheque for £225 to the nominated charity Talitha Koum. This charity was set up following the murders in Ipswich and has established the Hope Centre which provides residential accommodation for women in great need, perhaps from addiction, or violence, or facing an overwhelming challenge. It was also a great opportunity to pay tribute to our conductor (now President) Ute Cooper who through ill health has had to retire after 31 years! Our first rehearsal after Christmas will be on Monday Jan 14th 7.30 - 9.30 pm when we shall start preparing for our summer concert on Sat June 8th (the same day as the Open Gardens). This time we will perform Peter and the Wolf. If you would like to join the orchestra, we will be very pleased to welcome you - we are especially in need of violin and viola players. To know more, please ring me on 01473 827242, or Lynn on 01206 323636. John Druce (Chairman)

Well 2018 has been a fantastic and very memorable year for Kersey Mill. Quite considerable progress with the restoration has been made. We have now completed the restoration of the Hurst Frame. This leaves the stone furniture, runner stones and crown wheel repairs before we are able to produce flour. ‘Drive it day’ was a huge success with thousands of visitors. What a privilege it was to have some of the world’s most beautiful vintage vehicles on display. The year ended with Santa’s Workshop attracting more visitors than ever before from near and far. This was a demonstration of amazing support for an event that now attracts visitors from literally miles away. London Essex Cambridgeshire to name but a few. We also welcomed back groups of disabled & disadvantaged children a group of deaf children from The Ipswich Children’s Deaf Society where guided through their magical experience with an interpreter who was signing for them and many other children who attended with their friends and family. Many thanks to Armour Engineering at East Bergholt Glass & Craft and all those that helped stage the event especially the amazing Santa’s Workshop team that have worked so very hard to produce an event to be very proud of. We would like to thank everyone who has helped and supported us throughout the year and wish you all a very happy healthy and prosperous New Year.

Gladsome Faces In this article we remember: Cecil Claud Leeks 15 June 1919 Stanley Charles Oxford 18 June 1919 Harry William Hynard 25 October 1919 Albert Sydney Wright 31 October 1919 Leo John Durrant 29 December 1919 “The boys continue to return home throughout the Christmas holidays. The gladsome faces of all reflected the happiness they felt – the happiness of being at home with the war ended. Yet in all our chats they did not speak of the horrors, of the hardships they had endured, of the perils they had passed through or the sufferings from wounds and sickness.” So wrote Hadleigh headmaster, Alfred Harriss, in January 1919. These men were home on leave, demobilisation hadn’t begun. Given that nationally the military was at a strength of three and half million; reducing size of the military forces would have to be done in a controlled fashion and with some caution, partly to avoid mass unemployment. But also throughout 1919 the need for the British Army to maintain a significant presence was critical in order to avoid outbreaks of mass disruption caused by the political divisions that existed as the war ended. By October 1919 the Army’s strength had reduced to just over one million men with a presence in Germany, the Army of the Rhine as well as in Russia, France, Ireland, Egypt, India, Mesopotamia, Black Sea and at home. In many cases demobilised soldiers re-enlisted; the military did after all offer some job security. During 1919 five Hadleigh lives were lost as a consequence of the Great War and all are remembered on Hadleigh War Memorial. Private Cecil Claud Leeks died in Hadleigh of pulmonary tuberculosis having contracted the disease in Palestine while on active service. Cecil Leeks was born in 1895, bought up living in The Green, went to school in Bridge Street and started work for Aggiss’ the butchers at 28 High Street. He enlisted in September 1914 with the 5th Suffolk territorials and opted for overseas service. He went with the battalion to

GREAT WAR NEWS DECEMBER 1918 (as reported in the Suffolk and Essex Free Press of the day)

Wed 4 Dec The first regular meeting of the Hadleigh and District Post of the Comrades of the Great War was held in the Club Room at the Town Hall. There was a good attendance. All soldiers discharged since the Post was formed were enrolled as members. Certificates of membership and Comrades badges were presented by the Captain of the Post. Wed 18 Dec Private Oliver Beaumont [from Inkerman Terrace] King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry says, ‘I thank God I have got safely through the dangers and horrors of the war and feel deeply grateful to be alive and unwounded. The King paid us a visit on December 3rd. I was expecting to be in England by Christmas, but I am afraid there is no signs of coming home now.’ Wed 18 Dec Sidney Grimsey (a printer at 24 High Street) with the Essex Yeomanry writes, ‘I am in Germany now and having a good time. Our division of cavalry came through Belgium and we had great receptions all the way. The Belgiums turned out in great force everywhere to greet us. By the time you get this we shall be in Cologne. The Germans do not behave amiss to us, knowing as they do full well that they are free from the military yoke which oppressed them. Not that they love us, although treat us with respect, as of course we do them. I send hearty greetings for a bright and happy Christmas and I am glad to say a Christmas in peace, thank God, this year.’ Wed 15 Jan On Monday at the Ipswich Militia Barracks four Suffolk men, including Hadleigh man Pte S Markell 2nd Royal Fusiliers, were decorated with the Military Medal, awarded for conspicuous bravery in the field. Wed 15 Jan Act of Comradeship. Four soldiers acted as bearers at the funeral of the infant son of Corporal Bertie John Hammond, 1/5th Suffolk, on Tuesday afternoon. Three of them – George Maskell, Sidney Maskell and Ernest Seager – were repatriated prisoners of war. Corporal Hammond who served on the Gallipoli Peninsula, is currently with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force and never saw his little three year old boy [also named Bertie]. Wed 29 Jan The RAF men left the aerodrome here on Friday. On the preceding Wednesday evening those who were members of the dancing class conducted by Mrs Couper at the Guild Room, presented Flight Sergeant Cassidy with a gold watch in recognition of his kindness in arranging their duties so they could attend each week. Sergeant Cassidy remarked that in the course of twelve years army service spent at home and abroad, he had never met with so much sociability and hospitality as he had received from the Hadleigh people. 26

Gallipoli Peninsula, landing a Suvla Bay on 10 August 1915. It was during their first encounter with the enemy on 12 August, the day sixteen Hadleigh men were killed, that he received a gun shot wound in the right leg and was evacuated to St Elmo Hospital in Malta. He re-joined the battalion on the Peninsula in November a few weeks before the withdrawal. He was with the 1/5th Suffolks throughout their time in Egypt and Palestine, but having suffered poor health, weight loss and a persistent cough for some months, in August 1918 he was returned to England and discharged in November. He spent time in hospital but was at home at number 2 The Green when he died. He was awarded the Silver War Badge being ‘honourably discharged because of illness.’ Following a military funeral he was buried in Hadleigh Cemetery. Private Stanley Charles Oxford was conscripted and joined the colours in February 1918 and was allocated to the 1203rd Battery of the Royal Field Artillery. From 1918-19 this unit formed part of the North Russia Intervention, tasked with ensuring some stability in the east following the Russian Revolutions and the collapse of the Eastern Front. Following what was presumably an accident, Stanley Oxford died through drowning. He was born in 1899 in Red Hill on the Aldham Road on the Crown Brickworks site. He was the youngest of nine sons, eight of whom served including Fred who was killed at the Battle of the Somme in 1916. Stanley Charles Oxford is buried at Murmansk New British Cemetery, in the Russian Federation. Private Harry William Hynard was born in 1880 in Angel Square that once stood at the bottom of Angel Street. In 1901 and 1911 he was working as a butcher. He married Margaret Mowles in 1906 and they lived at 16 Angel Square and had three children. In December 1917 he was with the 1/4th The Queen’s (Royal West Surrey) Regiment and sailed for India leaving his wife pregnant with their fourth child Dorothy who was born in February 1918. On his way home from India to be demobilised he succumbed to malarial fever and was taken off the ship at Aden (now a port city in Yemen) and died in a military hospital there. He was buried in the Maala Cemetery. Private Albert Sydney Wright died at home of tuberculosis. He was born in 1897 at Durrants Farm at the top of George Street (in Tower Mill Lane) of a family that in 1911 consisted of sixteen children. He was probably educated at the Council School in Station Road and on leaving school worked on his father’s farm. In December 1913 he attested as a ‘Driver Wagoner’ with the Army Service Corps Special Reserve and received his £1 bounty. At the outbreak of war he was mobilised at Bradford on the 6 August 1914 and within two weeks was in France. He returned to England in February 1916 suffering from ‘tubercle of the lung’. In July 1917 he was transferred to the 5th North Staffordshires but was discharged from army service in December being no longer physically fit for war service. He returned to Hadleigh where he died almost a year after the Armistice. He was buried in Hadleigh Cemetery. Private Leo John Durrant died in India of pneumonia possibly brought on through influenza. He was born in early 1900 the son of a law clerk living at 51 Angel Street. He was educated at Bridge Street School. At the age of 15 he enlisted with the 4th Suffolk territorials; and from his photograph his uniform suggests he was a musician; boy drummer or bugler. He served in France where he was wounded and subsequently returned to England suffering from dysentery. He received his discharge in 1919, but it was not long before he reenlisted in the Norfolk regiment from which he was transferred to the 1st Suffolks and went out to India. Here he passed a course on ‘clerical instruction’ and was sent to Army Headquarters and promoted to sergeant at the age of 19. Leo John Durrant died at the British Stationary Hospital at Putoyli, India and was buried at the Jutogh New Cemetery. If you have information that would expand our knowledge of Hadleigh men who fell in the Great War, then Hadleigh Great War Centenary Project would be pleased to hear from you. The Workers Educational Association There has been a branch of the W.E.A in Hadleigh for over 60 years. The National Association has been in existence for over 100 years. Originally founded to promote ongoing education for adults who would otherwise be excluded, it provided an access route to higher education for those who aspired to it. These days the branch programme mostly delivers cultural education. The students are usually retired but W.E.A. programmes are open to anyone over the age of 19 years. Other strands of the W.E.A. involve ‘targeted provision’ aimed at specific groups, for example asylum seekers and refugees. The spring course for 2019 starts on 30th January in the social room at the Leisure centre. We meet for 7 sessions of 2 hours, Wednesday afternoons starting at 2.00pm. The course is entitled ‘Impressionism and beyond in portraiture’ the tutor is Mike Baldry who has taught art history for the W.E.A. for many years. Sadly this is the last 7 week course of its kind to take place in Hadleigh. As with many other organisations it is difficult to find volunteers to provide the necessary committee. The branch could be relocated in a village. If interested in any such venture please contact Judith Kelly 01473 822214

“Come on, let’s be havin’ you!” says charity director to county’s photographers The director of the county’s leading heritage charity has put a call out for more entries to its second photographic competition, aimed at capturing beautiful examples of modern architecture. The Suffolk Preservation Society teamed up with Suffolk Design Review Panel, which was set up to encourage high levels of design in new developments, and launched the second Suffolk Beauty photographic competition in the middle of the summer. The brief is for photographs of a single or group of modern buildings which entrants really like and which exhibit good design. ‘Modern’ is being defined as meaning anything built after 1945. These can be located within Suffolk or beyond its boundaries. The brief allows photographers to include modern buildings in situ – ie those which have been successfully blended into their wider landscape or just a detail on a single building that exhibits a high level of design and craftsmanship. The first Suffolk Beauty competition in 2016/7 received well over one hundred high quality entries, mostly pictures of the county’s outstandingly beautiful natural landscapes. According to the Society’s director, Fiona Cairns: “We knew that the second competition was going to be a far tougher assignment, but there’s a strategic reason behind this. “We decided to focus on modern beauty because Suffolk is facing unprecedented levels of new housing in coming years and we are looking for images that reflect fresh and exciting architecture that people are happy to live with and that Suffolk is, or would be, proud of.” “We’ve had some early entries, but now is the time for the county’s many amateur photographers to start sending in their submissions by the dozens. In the words of Delia Smith from across the border, ‘come on, let’s be havin’ you!’” The deadline for submissions is 28 February 2019. A panel will then select a short-list with the winners due to be announced in spring 2019. Prizes will be awarded, with details of these to follow soon. Please submit your images on the SPS twitter feed @SuffolkSociety using the hastag #suffolkbeauty, via the Suffolk Preservation Society Facebook page or send them via email as a jpeg image to bethany@suffolksociety.org

Its Panto Time, Oh yes it is...... Yes HADS is back with its new panto Beauty and the Beast, A pantomime tale. This year our panto is slightly later and also in a different venue too. As Hadleigh does not have a venue with a stage or curtains we always have to work with the venue and stage company to make things happen and we would like to thank the URC Church for all its help. With a cast of around 20 members with new faces and some (well that's just say older) we have something for everyone. We have song, laughter and of course a fantastic cast to bring the story to life. I hear a growl...grrrrrrrrrrrr...is it the beast?...BEAST HUNGRY...Right I better go - make sure you get your tickets from Keith Avis Newsagents for performances at the URC Church on the 14th, 15th & 16th February 2019 starting at 7.30pm. Armistice Day Memorial - What a complete and successful tribute the town paid to the fallen of the Great War. Everyone in Hadleigh played their part. Of course there would be the odd hiccup or line dropped along the way. However, there could be no doubt who the fulcrum of the weekend was - Mark Brennan. The reviver of the Royal British Legion, Hadleigh Branch. I looked to the December copy of Hadleigh Community News for acknowledgement of Mark’s great input, but although there were a clear five days to the H.C.N copy date, no one had submitted anything. Well for my money Mark should without question be the town’s nomination for Babergh’s citizen of the year. This has been repeated to me by others involved in the weekend. Therefore, if Hadleigh Town Council themselves are not permitted to nominate there should be no shortage of proposers coming forward. Having recognised Mark as the driving force however, the standout person for me was a rising 85 year old. A short service soldier of four years when a young man, who is the current senior standard bearer of Hadleigh branch R.B.L. Without rehearsal and a few hurried whispers from Mark whilst on stage at the Saturday night concert in the United Reformed Church. His timing and movement were perfect in every aspect, plus a heavy standard. Well done Len Davis, ex Rifle Brigade (Royal Green Jackets). Finally, there were several questions raised as to the sudden removal on the following Monday of the tributes from the Magdalen Road Car Park railings, and where were they taken to? Hadleigh are fortunate to have so many talented supporters. Again it was noted that this was a coming together of various groups and hopefully it will continue to enlarge. Well done to everyone and of course, Mark Brennan. F.H. Bryer

Dear Sir, On behalf of Hadleigh United Brettsiders U15 football team I would like express my sincere gratitude to the Hadleigh Thrift Shop for their grant which enabled us to buy a new football kit this season. Without such kindness, purchasing a new kit would have been extremely difficult. A huge THANK YOU from us all! Lawrence Woolston Hadleigh United Brettsiders U15 Manager

Dear Sir, With regard to the proposed development of the former Corks Lane council offices in Hadleigh. Whilst I have no problem with the proposals in general, I view with huge dismay the plans to build four homes on the car park site at Bridge Street. We have a big problem with parking in Hadleigh, our High Street is choking with cars parked on yellow lines or left in bays all day. The town is expanding in all directions with new housing going up at a frightening rate. Yet there are no plans to increase parking provision in the town centre. Magdalen Road car park is already at capacity. We are being told that the four houses on Bridge Street are necessary to make the whole site viable for development. As a local journalist, over the many years I have been covering planning matters, I have often heard such statements about the viability of certain sites, a point I view with some scepticism, since it is usually about squeezing every drop of profit out of a site. And as in the case of the previously proposed backland development of the park area at East House, it is usually resolved. I am

sure the development of this substantial site would still be well viable without the area over the bridge. I understand the parking restrictions in the High Street are soon to be better enforced, but this just underlines that we need more parking spaces, as where will they go if they are removed from the High Street? My proposal would be to designate Bridge Street for long-stay parking, making Magdalen Road short-stay only, where we could also increase the number of disabled and parent/child parking spaces. We now have a one-time opportunity to solve the parking problem in Hadleigh, and at virtually no cost, since the site is already laid out as a car park. Babergh District Council may well have an obligation to maximise revenue from the sale of this site, but they also have a wider brief in terms of community provision for the town. I hope the community will raise a collective voice and say a resounding ‘no’ to this part of the proposal. This would safeguard the future prosperity of our High Street, as well as making facilities more accessible for those that need them. If we lose this site, it will be gone forever and there is no viable alternative within walking distance of the town centre. I urge everyone to write to their local councillors and the planning committee at Babergh and ask them to drop this element of the proposal. It goes to committee in January, so there is no time to lose. Amanda Brodie FCIJ

TAKE THE FIRST STEP TO A HEALTHIER YOU

AND WE’LL HELP YOU EVERY STEP OF THE WAY

Dear Sir, Further to reading a complaint about cyclists in Howard Gibbons’ column in the October HCN, I would like to take issue with the notion expressed that cyclists should pay road tax. Nobody in this country has paid Road Tax since 1937 when it was repealed and replaced by Vehicle Excise Duty – the latter being a tax on vehicles and their emissions and is most definitely not a tax on road use. Electric cars and low emission vehicles don’t pay Vehicle Excise Duty and, therefore, there is clearly no case for bicycles to do so. There should be no, “us” and “them”. Cyclists are just people who chose to ride on two wheels rather than in a car and, in the same way as any other road user, want to complete their journey to return safely home to their families. Nick Webber

Mrs Brenda Grimsey I hope you had a very good Christmas and I wish you a very Happy and Healthy New Year. No cards were sent but a donation was given to Sue Ryder, Ipswich.

Thank You... On Saturday the 1st December the following people showed up at 9.30am at the back of the Kings Head and went off to erect 60 Christmas Trees along the High Street – a big thank you to all of them. Many thanks also to Mike Ager of the Kings Head for the loan of his ladder, Phil Taylor of Brett Valley Landscapes for the loan of this truck and W J Green Ltd for the hire of the chainsaw. A big thank you to all the businesses and residents of the High Street and Market Place and the Royal British Legion who took part – a total of 60 trees this year. And don’t forget ….. what goes up must come down ….. so, if anybody is available on Saturday 5 January to help take down the Xmas trees, we would be most grateful for any help – please meet behind the Kings Head at 9.30 am.

THE 1:1 DIET by Cambridge Weight Plan WORKS... Two important clinical trials completed last year have proven that Total Diet Replacement (TDR*) programmes are more successful than the Usual Care provided by a practice nurse for those needing to lose weight to improve conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, heart disease & obstructive sleep apnoea etc. Nine out of 10 patients taking part in the Direct (Diabetes Remission Clinical Trial), which used Cambridge Weight Plan products, who lost more than 15kg went into remission and almost half (45.6%) were still in remission 12 months later. Only 4% of the control group receiving Usual Care from their GP managed remission. Our Medical Director has been involved in numerous research programmes & trials worldwide over the years and is delighted that TDR programmes have finally been recognised as beneficial to so many medical conditions. Another trial, the Droplet trial (Doctor Referral of Overweight People to Low Energy Treatment) proved that the average weight loss after a year of those on a TDR programme (for 8 weeks initially followed by careful reintroduction of food over 4 weeks alongside weekly 1:1 support with a Cambridge Weight Plan Consultant) was around 3 times that lost by those on the usual care plan. Perhaps 2019 is the year you’d like to take control of health issues or maybe you have a special occasion coming up. Cambridge Weight Plan has the 3 Ps.. the Products, the Plan and, especially, the People providing 1:1 support to help you succeed. A new you for 2019 could be just a phone call away... get in touch & we’ll find the Plan for you! Ten years ago, I picked up the phone, changed my life, you can too.! Best thing I ever did!! Hadleigh & District Garden Club Monday December 10th 2018: 2018 has been an eventful year for the club a new acting chairman, new members of the committee, membership increasing, outings to pastures new and a wide range of visiting speakers, all in our 50th year. Just when we thought it couldn't get any better along comes the Christmas quiz! Mulled wine and festive fare helped us face six rounds of questions, all with a horticultural theme. There was a tie for first place and two tie breaks to decide the winning team - a very close run thing and a very enjoyable evening. Another winner on the night was Fiona, who can be seen in the photo with Ruth, our president, being presented with a garden voucher and, for the first time this year, the chairman's trophy. This goes to the club member who is the overall winner of the monthly competitions, it is theirs to keep for the year. Our next get together on Monday January 14th 2019: Our first speaker for the new year is Robert Canham from Notcutts garden centre. His theme is very apt for the new season- 'Plants for problem places'. The evening also includes the usual raffle and plant sale. The meeting begins at 7.30pm in Hadleigh Town Hall, £3 for visitors and £1 for members to include refreshments. We hope to see you there. www.hadleghgardenclub@gmail.com

Down to Earth ...with Dave Generally I try to garden organically, this is not always possible. For instance, when vine weevils infest the fuchsias in pots or when black spot devastates the rose bushes, or perhaps something like ground elder or bindweed is trying to take over a flowerbed. On the whole things like slugs and snails can be controlled by picking them off and dropping them in a pot of salty water. Slug pellets are not used as they can be harmful to visiting hedgehogs and birds. If you encourage birds in the garden by regular feeding and keeping fresh water available then most of the aphid type pests are eaten by the various small birds that visit. The organic theme is very evident on the allotment with the use of massive amounts of home produced compost. Over the years the soil has been improved with the addition of barrow loads of this magic stuff. Making good compost is I think, very simple but not everyone agrees and it is easy to end up with a nasty, slimy smelly mess. Compost is made from rotted down organic material, virtually anything is compostable - garden waste, kitchen vegetable scraps including the outer leaves from leeks and brassicas, grass cuttings, paper shreddings, some newspaper and cardboard, leaves picked up with the lawnmomer and old bedding straw from the pet rabbit. Young weeds and foliage (but not roots) soft hedge trimmings, old flowers and bedding plants and, on the allotment, horse manure from the nearby stables plus some aviary floor sweepings. Some things not to put on the compost are meat, fish and dairy products, any cooked food, coal or coke ash (wood ash is fine), cat litter or disposable nappies. We seem to generate quite a lot of material so we have four large heaps on the allotment. When a heap is full it is covered with old carpet and left to rot down, the heaps are not turned and each heap is ready for use after about a year. The system in the garden is a bit different with a plastic dalek type bin used. In this the material is continually put in the top and removed from the bottom when ready. Getting the compost out can be a bit difficult so it is sometimes easier to lift the whole bin off to get to the bottom layer. The quality of this compost is better as it contains more spent potting compost and selected chopped up waste. This is mainly used to mix with bought in bags of multi purpose compost to make them go further in the numerous pots we have, it is not used for seed sowing or young plants. The secret is to feed the soil rather than the plant, and the best way to feed the soil is with homemade compost. It is nature's black gold, it will make your soil fertile as well as giving it a good structure. That's all for now, Dave

Another Legacy in Place After many months of careful preparation a colourful interpretation board, which is the legacy of the Festival of Gardening and Art 2017, finally reached its intended place. Although the irises have been in situ for quite some time, the explanatory board to accompany them has not. The new illustrated board not only shows the type of iris in the nearby beds but also gives a little background information and a photo of the most common. Sincere thanks to Sarah Cook and the original Festival Organisers; Jane Snowdon, Jane Haylock and Jan Devey for their contribution, Steve Chisnall’s team for efficiently setting it firmly in the ground and finally Shelley Signs for producing the sign itself. The money for the sign came from the Festival’s Legacy Fund.

Steve Mortimer places the legacy of the Festival of Gardening and Art near the iris beds.

The Clerk advised that the payment schedules are published on the website showing all payments of £500 which is the legal requirement of the Council and the payment schedule itself was too long to be included within the minutes. They are the NALC standing orders with additions pertinent to Hadleigh Town Council. These had been approved by the Finance & Personnel Committee. Councillor Fraser advised that if there were any amendments these could be made in the future. Voting was: For: Councillors: Angland, Cook, Fraser, Free, Haines, Haylock, Loftus, Matthews, Monks. Against: Councillors: Knock, Schleip, Shearly-Sanders and Wiltshire. Abstention: Councillor Sheldrick. Town Council Policies Councillor Free had updated the Health & Safety Policy and provided members with a copy showing the changes in red recommended for approval. Councillor Schleip felt that additional information may need to be added but would provide the amendments in due course. Councillor Cook recommended approval – seconded by Councillor Loftus. This was approved. Councillor ShearlySanders abstained from voting. Setting Up A Charity Committee Councillor Sheldrick had requested this item and provided members with a written report for discussion. Councillor Angland stated NALC LTN 28 Point 7 states that ‘All discussions and decisions relating to the charity should be taken at a meeting specifically called for that purpose, not at a council meeting.’ It was agreed that a special Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity meeting be called and all Councillors be invited to attend to discuss this matter. Benton Street Phone Box Councillor Monks had requested this item following the request to house a defibrillator in the redundant phone box on Ann Beaumont Way. Councillor Monks had carried out a survey of the residents and they were mostly all in favour of a defibrillator being housed in that part of the town. Concerns were raised over the phone box not being suitable and costs involved. Councillor Knock pointed out that the residents of Benton Street could access the defibrillator at the rear of the Co-op. The Clerk advised that as the defibrillator has been approved for the phone box in Ann Beaumont Way she had been in contact with BT and Hadleigh Town Council can adopt both phone boxes. Councillor Monks stated that she was disappointed that this request was not embraced by the Council as it was to provide a life-saving facility to residents. It was agreed that the Clerk would obtain more information including costs and report back to the next meeting. Finance & Personnel Committee Councillor Knock had requested this item at the last meeting and was requesting that Councillor Schleip sits on this Committee. The reason given was that Councillor Schleip had expertise in staffing/HR matters. It was agreed that Councillor Monks, as Chair, would invite Councillor Schleip to future meetings when it was felt that her expertise would be helpful. This Council Agrees To Obtain Legal Advice For The Town Council Regarding Its Position As A Trustee Councillor Wiltshire had requested this item. The Clerk advised that she had contacted Gotelee & Goldsmiths and been advised that they would need a list of specific questions in order that a quotation could be provided. This would then go before Finance & Personnel. It was agreed that this will come back to full Council to agree the set of questions. To Update The Residents On The Cemetery Extension Via The Town Council Website And The Hadleigh Community News Councillor Knock had requested this item. The Mayor advised that this was on the staff’s list of jobs to be done. To Put In The Public Domain The Correspondence Address For The Internal Auditor Councillor Knock had requested this item. Councillor Knock had been provided with information on why this was not possible by e.mail from the Clerk. The answer given to Councillor Knock was No – this address would not be put in the public domain. To Supply The Income And Outgoings (Accounts) Of The Cemetery To Any Councillors And Residents That Ask For It Councillor Knock had requested this item. Mrs. Brown advised that the RFO would be asked to work on this information. It’s Christmas And All Aspects Councillor Wiltshire had requested this item. She was advised that a Christmas tree was to be erected in the Market Square and 60 Christmas trees were being erected along the High Street on the 1st December 2018. Councillor Wiltshire asked if the collection for the food bank could be held at the December meeting as had happened in the past. Archive Fund Councillor Shearly-Sanders had requested this item and questioned the legalities of the Archives. He felt that details of the running of the Archive Group should be written up and in his opinion this would not have been done. Councillor Angland advised that all the paperwork was in the Archives. An invitation was made to Councillors to visit the Archive and have a tour of the building when joining the Council. Town Matters Councillor Haylock reported that she had met with a Babergh District Council Officer and the flower bed at the back of the Market Place was going to be cleared completely in order that the Legacy Group could re-plant the whole area. The new bench should be in place during December which was positive as this had originally been agreed by the Environment & General Purposes Committee back in 2017 when Mr. Wilson was chair. She wondered if any of the members of the Hadleigh Together Facebook page, who had shown an interest in flower beds around the town, would care to volunteer in weeding and watering the area. There being no further business the meeting ended at 10.15pm. Mrs E. Root – Acting Proper Officer Addendum: This is a draft report of the meeting. The Minutes will be approved at the Monthly Town Council Meeting held on the third Thursday of the following month. Minutes are viewable on Hadleigh Town Council website – hadleigh.suffolk.cloud Please note Hadleigh Town Council’s new website address is: https://hadleigh.suffolk.cloud. Additional Applications: DC/18/04812 Former Angel Court Care Home, Angel Street, Approval was recommended (Voting was unanimous), Concerns were raised about the implications for ingress and egress on a congested highway. DC/18/4960 – 34 Emmerson Way – as she owns property nearby. Minutes The Minutes of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 13th November 2018 were confirmed as a correct record and signed. Matters Arising There were no matters arising. Town And Country Planning The Committee considered the applications for Planning Consent, details of which are listed below and upon which the following decisions were reached:DC/18/05091 Land to the west of 2 Cosford Road, Aldham, Erection of 1 no. single storey dwelling, Approval was recommended (voting was unanimous), Concerns were raised about the access as it was not clear on the drawings and also there is no footpath access. The Clerk was asked to point out that there was no application form as part of the documents and secondly, more importantly, the site plan was considered useless. The Chair recommended that DC/18/4966 be considered first. This request was approved. DC/18/04966 The Former Babergh District Council Offices, Corks Lane and Bridge Street, Redevelopment to provide 57 dwellings (Use Class C3) with private amenity areas, parking, fencing, landscaping, open space and refuse facilities, access roads and associated works and infrastructure, incorporating the part demolition and part retention and conversion of the existing office buildings (including the retention and conversion of The Maltings, No’s 21 & 23 Bridge Street, River View & The Cottage & demolition of Bridge House), site of the former Babergh District Council Offices & associated land. Most members had had difficulty in viewing all or some of the documentation relating to the applications involved with the Corks Lane development. There was a lot of discussion over the findings of the contamination report, about properties being built in the flood plain and how over the years certain areas of the site had been covered in water. It was felt that there was insufficient parking for the site and this could have an impact on Ann Beaumont Way, the cricket fencing, the lack of public open space and how this would be managed. Following a long discussion, and the number of unanswered questions, it was agreed that the applications be noted as members were unable to make a recommendation because there are so many concerns and the documentation is difficult to access. The Clerk was asked to speak directly with the Planning Officer and request a meeting with members of the Planning Committee in order that the matters raised could be addressed. The Clerk would also ask if the documentation could be provided as a hard copy. Additional Applications: DC/18/01675 1 Bridge Street, Listed Building Consent – Replacement of front boundary privet hedging with willow woven fencing to match existing willow fencing to property. Refusal was recommended (Voting was unanimous). The reason for refusing was because it was felt the willow was not appropriate to the street scene. There were no objections raised to the earlier request for a brick wall. DC/18/04960 34 Emmerson Way, Erection of a front porch, Approval was recommended (Voting was unanimous) DC/18/05223 106 High Street, Notification of works to trees within a Conservation Area – Works to 1no. Christine Thurlow demonstrated the new data base which should be going live fairly soon and will show all the information relating to CiL and Section 106 monies. This will be updated every day at 5pm. The Clerk reported an e.mail received from the Tinkler’s Meadow Campaign Group in Stowmarket requesting Hadleigh Town Council’s support to request that the Babergh Mid-Suffolk Joing Local Plan includes a Local Green Spaces policy for all communities where there is no Neighbourhood Development Plan. It was agreed that Hadleigh Town Council would support this request. There being no further business the meeting closed at 8.30pm.

Letter from Layham www.layham.org

Parish Council The main matters discussed at the Parish Council meeting of 28 November 2018 were: • District Council report Bin collections were still a problem, which it seemed was mostly due to a shortage of lorry drivers. • County Council report With regard to the budget, Councillor Jones said it was likely that the county council precept would rise by the maximum possible without a referendum, ie 2.99%. The Chairman expressed concern that vital services such as the Citizen’s Advice Bureau and the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme could lose their grants; closer to home, road signs might not be cleaned and road markings not fully maintained, as SCC struggled to reduce expenditure. Councillor Jones agreed that parish councils were free to make observations at national Government level about the effect such cuts would have. Funding had been set aside for repairing potholes and resurfacing, but as winter was not the right time for this work, he had suggested it might be better used to address the problem of flooding and blocked drains. The Lord Lieutenant had thanked people for their events to commemorate the WW1 Armistice; more bells had been rung in Suffolk than in any other county. • Budget and Precept for 2019/20 The recommendations of the working party were noted, the key points being the need to make provision for the election in May 2019 and subsequently new councillor training. It was agreed that the precept should be increased by £500, from £10,500 to £11.000. • Meeting with Hadleigh Town Council re flooding across road near Rugby Club The Chairman had met with Hadleigh Town Council’s Services Officer and produced a report which it was agreed should be sent to Hadleigh Town Council with a request for them to liaise with a technician who could recommend remedial action. • 2019 meetings schedule The schedule of meetings for 2019 was agreed: Wednesday 23 January, Wednesday 27 February, Wednesday 27 March, Wednesday 24 April (Annual Parish Meeting), Tuesday 21 May (AGM), Wednesday 26 June, Wednesday 24 July, Wednesday 28 August, Wednesday 25 September, Wednesday 30 October, Wednesday 27 November. St. Andrew’s – your parish church Sunday Services in January Winter thumbnail of the church please 6th 9.15am Morning Worship 13th 9.15am Sung Eucharist 20th 9.30am Cafe Church 27th 9.15am Sung Eucharist Stars of Suffolk Awards This “glittering award ceremony” was held at Trinity Park in Ipswich on 8th November, when Suffolk people who have done “extraordinary things” in their communities were recognised. The event was sponsored this year by Flagship Housing Group and 17 other local organisations and businesses. Steve Laing, owner of the Queen’s Head in Layham, was presented with a ‘Special Recognition of the Year Award’. As reported in the East Anglian Daily Times, he: “...saved the life of Derek Harrison after he went

into cardiac arrest, falling and hitting his head on the floor. Steve stemmed the heavy bleeding from the head wound and put his first aid training into action – performing CPR. After two shocks with a defibrillator, Mr Harrison finally stabilised for long enough to move him to an ambulance and he was taken to hospital for further treatment. Miraculously, Mr Harrison was able to go to the Queen’s Head to enjoy a pub lunch and thank the man who saved his life”. Steve is one of the Layham Parish Councillors who have taken the decision, in recent years, to purchase and install four defibrillators in the village – the fourth is to be connected up shortly. When they are all in place, residents of all the main clusters of housing, the two pubs, the village hall and the church will be within five minutes of a defibrillator. What is now essential – is that residents take up the offer of free CPR training in order that, if they are ever faced with a cardiac arrest, they know what to do. Please respond when you are offered training. Playing Field 100 Club The winners of the December draw were: £100 Ticket No 59 Frolish, £40 Ticket No 6 Short, £20 Ticket No 23 Woods Neighbourhood Watch An active Neighbourhood Watch volunteer has reported the recent appearance in the village of men offering quick maintenance work at hugely inflated prices. It is always questionable when people knock on the door and suggest work you need done – loose roofing tiles, roof cleaning, driveway resurfacing, tree trimming etc. It is always wise to ask for a quotation and then check it out with at least one other local business – rather than be talked into an instant decision. From the village archive The small group of people who make up the Layham Local History Group are always hoping that someone will pop up with a box full of Layham photographs from under the bed. Remember ‘yesterday’ is history and will be of great interest to researchers in the future. If you sort through your family photographs and find a few that show some aspect of village life, then we would be pleased to hear from you. We can scan the pictures, enter them into our archive and let you have them back. This photograph is of a tug-of-war over the River Brett during a village event on what is now the playing field probably in the late 1970s. It has been suggested that the competition was between teams from the two pubs (Queen and Marquis). Can anyone remember? We wonder if anyone has a picture of the other team? Do you recognise anyone? If you can help in any way or would like to get involved with the group please contact out village archivist (Charlotte Britton) on 823351 or charlottepbritton@gmail.com.

All That Jazz! - The Jazz Century Cakewalk to Culture by Dr Graham Platts Stoke-by-Nayland WEA presents a series of 10 weekly lectures starting on Thursday 17th January 2019 in Stoke-by-Nayland Village Hall at 7.30 pm. A decade by decade jazz journey, from 1900 to the 1990s (and beyond), with guided commentary/discussion and numerous musical examples. From the dance halls and sporting houses of New Orleans to Carnegie Hall and the greatest concert stages around the world, jazz has travelled far both geographically and culturally. America's greatest indigenous musical form, soon to become a world music category, prompts us to ask about the men and women behind its development and what they contributed. What would jazz become by the end of the twentieth century? This course celebrates some of the many pioneers who have kept us dancing and enriched our lives While Graham was growing up in the 1950s he discovered the infectious drive and fun of early jazz and learned about the Swing era of the ‘thirties from his father who was an enthusiastic and skilful amateur jazz pianist. The greater complexities of jazz after WW2 took a little longer to grasp, so we shall be embarking together on a voyage of further discovery as the course progresses! Fees: Adult £55 (payable after the first session). Try the first session (free). For further information please contact Sue Whiteley. Phone: 01787 210945 or email: whiteleysa@hotmail.co.uk

News from St Mary’s Primary School As always, the run-up to Christmas has been a busy time, with lots to get through before we succumbed to the lure of glitter and tinsel! Year 3 had a trip to Colchester Castle which was linked to their history topic about the Romans. They learned about the influence of the Romans on the local area, explored the museum and had an exciting story tour in the Roman vaults under the castle. Their behaviour was exemplary! Year 4 have been learning about myths and legends, researching about the Vikings and making Viking shields. Year 5 have been looking at the book ‘Tuesday’ by David Wiesner and discovering how a story can be communicated without words. The children have imagined themselves as detectives and learned how to ask questions to extract information. Then they became reporters and learned about the different ways a story can be presented, depending on the viewpoint of the writer! Year 6 had an amazing trip to Ipswich Crown Court, as part of their current theme on justice. They performed in a mock trial, taking on different roles, and met a Crown Court judge, who was very complimentary about their level of questioning and understanding. This was followed up by linked learning in Science, when they looked at forensic evidence, and RE, when they learned about the story of the judgement of Solomon. Christmas! The children in EYFS and KS1 delighted and entranced us all with their take on the Nativity story. EYFS performed ‘Whoops a Daisy Angel’, and years 1&2 ‘Born in a Barn’, which involved much line-learning, singing and inventive costume-wearing! Our new stage lighting was used to great effect, and the children received lots of positive comments from parents, grandparents and friends. The children in the Early Years Foundation Stage put on an extra performance for visitors from Sydney Brown Court and Magdalen Care Home, and other members of the local community. Year 6 served refreshments to the guests afterwards. This was another fantastic performance and it was lovely to be able to share the Christmas magic with our special guests. We would like to say a huge thank you to all of the children and grown-ups involved in these delightful productions. As the Christmas excitement mounted, glitter was sprinkled lavishly over hats ready to be worn, along with festive jumpers, at the whole school celebration lunch, to be followed by the after-school discos. Year 2 went down to Magdalen House to sing all their Christmas songs from our nativity. The elders all really enjoyed their singing and praised us all - year 2 sang with beautiful smiles! As a thank you, the children got a 'Thank you' card and a box of biscuits from Magdalen House and in return, the children will be writing a 'Thank you' card back to the elders to show their appreciation. Music: Year 5 have been learning to play the recorder, through the Whole Class Ensemble Tuition programme. They gave an excellent end of term performance to the rest of the school, as well as parents and friends, which included some great singing too that had us all joining in. They have worked really hard and we were all impressed by their timing and how well they performed collectively. Friends of St Mary’s: Our wonderful and hard-working support group organised a highly successful Christmas Fayre, which raised over £1000 to benefit and enrich our children’s learning experience. The Fayre began with the whole school singing carols outside on the playground, and then enjoying a variety of food and drink, games and competitions, meeting real reindeer, wrapping presents for loved ones and of course the all-important visit to Father Christmas’ grotto. Collective Worship As well as our usual visitors, the children have enjoyed an assembly on Christingles, led by Janice White, and the Christian Youth Ministry came in to reinforce the true message of Christmas. The Achievement assembly on 19th December gave everyone the opportunity to share in all the children’s achievements inside and outside school. Term ended on a high note with the school’s carol service at St Mary’s church, a joyful and festive occasion as always. 38

Bildeston Primary School Learning and Growing Together Able Writers’ Day Two of our children attended an Able Writers’ Day at Chilton Community Primary School on Wednesday 10 October 2018. They worked with the brilliant poet, illustrator and performer, Ed Boxall. The children gained a great deal from working with him throughout the day. The event also tied in nicely with National Poetry Day. Guide Dogs for the Blind Assembly All of our children were visited by members of the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association. They kindly presented an assembly for the school followed by a workshop for our Year 3/4 children. Girls Science Day On Monday 5 November, we sent children from Bildeston and Whatfield to an event at Old Buckenham Hall School. The day was specifically aimed at girls in year 5 and was an exciting opportunity for them to compete in a variety of STEM subject challenges. They had the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to work together to problem solve and complete tasks. Teams were judged and prizes awarded to the leaders in each activity. Sports Event This Term Children from across the school took part in the following events: U11 Cross Country at Hadleigh High School/ U11 Tag Rugby at Hadleigh High School, U11 Tag Rugby at Inspire Suffolk, U9 Dodgeball at Inspire Suffolk/ U11 Dodgeball at Inspire Suffolk. All of the children that took part thoroughly enjoyed the events and came back with great results and some fair play awards all of which are handed to the children at our weekly Celebration assembly. PTFA News The PTFA held a very successful Cinema Night for the children on Thursday 18 October. The children also enjoyed a treat whilst they watched the movie! Lots of our children came dressed for the occasion and had beany bags and cushions to be comfortable! The PTFA also held a Christmas Fayre on Friday 30 November. They raised in excess of £700 for the school which is wonderful! The PTFA have recently provided the school with books, phonics resources, and crackers for our Christmas lunch. We really are very appreciative of the work that they do for us. OneLife Programme Kingfisher class have been taking part in the OneLife programme on Tuesday afternoons across a six week period. Each weekly session focussed on being healthy and why it is important to take care of ourselves. With helpful tips and advice the children got to learn all about making a healthy packed lunch, the importance of physical activity, a balanced diet and making healthy snack choices. Children In Need We supported Children in Need on Friday 16 November raising a total of £97.60 by donating ten pence pieces to cover our giant Pudsey template! Children and staff also raised £48.74 for St Elizabeth Hospice and £33.42 for Macmillan Cancer charities through donations for refreshments at school events. Local entrepreneur wins ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ The founder and managing director of one of East Anglia’s leading hearing care companies has been honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award by one of the UK’s leading health governing bodies. Karen Finch, owner of local business The Hearing Care Centre which has a local clinic at Health By Design, Hadleigh, was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award for her work in the audiology profession, at the British Health Trades Association (BHTA) Excellence Awards an annual celebration of success in the healthcare marketplace. This award comes at a pivotal point for Karen because this year marks the 20th anniversary of The Hearing Care Centre. From humble beginnings in 1998, Karen now employs a team of almost 30 employees and provides top-level hearing care from a network of 26 centres across East Anglia. Karen was commended by the BHTA for her dedication to the high quality of her team and investment in the people that she works with, allowing them to develop their own careers, and helping all of them to make a success of the business. Karen was also recognised for the work she does in the local community to promote hearing health, and the company’s fundraising for many local and national charities including Hearing Dogs for Deaf People who help to transform the lives of the deaf. Karen Finch was overcome with emotion when she was presented with the award: “Being recognised by a peer group like the BHTA is incredibly validating for me and our entire team at The Hearing Care Centre. The whole board were involved in the decision process and I truly appreciate that the BHTA takes a thoughtful approach to highlight the audiology sector professionals. “As I think of other Lifetime Achievements recipients who preceded me, and the impact they’ve had in their health organisations and in the wider community, I am very grateful to rank among them. But I do hope they don’t think I have achieved everything I want to achieve – I’m not ready to go home and retire. I’m not done yet!”.

The DIY Deli Cold-smoked salmon cured with gin & juniper berries Salmon comes in a range of qualities; if we disregard line-caught Scottish salmon on the basis that getting hold of it is a question of who you know, the pecking order is, from top to bottom: 1. Pacific “sockeye” salmon, widely sourced from Alaska 2. Organic Scottish farmed salmon 3. Generic Scottish farmed salmon 4. Norwegian farmed salmon Given the flavours introduced by the cure there is little point in going to the expense of sockeye; generic Scottish salmon will make a perfectly good product. The mild flavour of beech is ideal for cold-smoked salmon; poky woods such as oak or ash tend to overpower the fish. The addition of gin might seem an odd idea given that all the alcohol will inevitably evaporate; however it serves two functions; while the brown meat near the lateral line can eat a trifle chewy the gin has a softening effect; it also helps to make the flesh more porous, giving better smoke penetration. Essential equipment 1. A cold smoke generator 2. Fish pliers to deal with the bones; tweezers can work but only if you have a grip like a vice; even then they tend to slip; the pliers shown below are from the German master cutler Wüsthof. 3. A long sharp knife with a thin profile for slicing the finished product; do not use a knife with a serrated edge – these have a tearing action that results in slices with a stringy texture; the example shown below, from the Victorinox range, is ideal, having a maximum thickness of 1.6 mm on a 30 cm blade 4. Stainless steel skewers; 1, around 6” long, per side of fish 5. A frame with a horizontal rail from which to hang the sides of fish 6. Hooks in the shape of the letter “S” to secures the sides of fish to the rail; if you have a purpose made smoker 5 & 6 above come as standard equipment 7. If you don’t have a purpose built smoker, something to contain the mounted fish in the smoke environment; this can be a cardboard box, tea chest, whathave-you? It must have vent holes towards the bottom and an adjustable vent at the top; the latter can take the form of a hole that is partially covered by a beer mat with a paperweight 8. A pestle & mortar or other device for crushing juniper berries 9. In an ideal world, a vacuum bagger; this not only prevents drying out; it increases freezer life fourfold Ingredients 2 whole salmon Around 3kg each, 400g Soft brown sugar, 400g Sea salt, 100ml Gin, 20g Juniper berries, Beech wood dust. Method 1. Fillet the salmon into whole sides, or ask your fishmonger to do it for you; don’t expect a boneless result 2. The pin bones will be in distinct rows rather than randomly scattered; locate them by running your finger along the flesh from head to tail; they have a way of making you aware of their presence; tease the tip into a visible position and extract the bone with your pliers 3. Crush the juniper berries to release the oil and mix thoroughly with the sugar and salt 4. Place the fillets in a large rectangular ceramic dish, skin side up and dust with the cure 5. Turn the fish skin side down and pour the gin evenly over the flesh ensuring good coverage 6. Cover the fish with the cure and seal the dish with cling film 7. Place the dish in the fridge for 10 hours or overnight 8. Rinse off all the cure and steep in cold water for 10 minutes 9. Remove the fish and dry thoroughly on kitchen paper; place it on a wire rack and return to the fridge for 24 hours; during this time it will develop a slightly tacky coating called a pellicle; this is important as it creates a layer that encourages osmosis and enhances smoke penetration 10. Secure a skewer at the head end of each fillet at right angles to the length of the fillet by piercing the skin four times – in/out/in/out 11. Secure an “S”-shaped hook to the central exposed part of each skewer 12. Load your smoke generator with beech dust and ignite 13. Hang the fillets from the rail ensuring they are not in contact with one another; introduce the smoke generator and cover the frame/smoker 14. Smoke for 6-10 hours according to taste 15. Leave to settle for 2 hours in the fridge; this will ensure even distribution of the smoke flavour 16. Place on a thin board and slice thinly with the edge of the knife angled towards the tail; start at the tail end 17. Transfer the slices to bags of around 250g Storage The product will keep in the fridge for up to 1 week (4 if vacuum packed) or 13 weeks in the freezer (12 months vacuum packed)

Hadleigh march into the new year with an impressive record of having twelve consecutive victories in their league. This has made us the team to beat and we have found that other clubs are raising their game as a result. In recent weeks the young squad has been seriously tested by Colchester and Sudbury. While the Rams have found try scoring more challenging, their defence from 1 to 18 has been particularly pugnacious. These challenges will stand Hadleigh in good stead in the new year when the push for promotion begins in earnest. The structure of the Eastern Counties leagues dictate that we will be playing arguably better teams from further afield. The spirit and confidence that currently defines Hadleigh Rugby Club makes the challenge more exciting than daunting. We are in the process of organising some Second Team games for 2019. New or returning players will therefore have the opportunity initially to train and play in a less pressured environment. Senior training nights are Tuesday and Thursday from 7.30pm. More details can be found at hadleighrfc.rfu.club. The youth and minis sections train and play on Sundays. The next Danny Cipriani or Sam Underhill might well be living in Hadleigh just waiting to discover the joys of the best and friendliest team sport in the world.

Ken’s SESAW News Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare Reg charity no 1124029 It’s not often an ex SESAW dog hits the headlines but two of our canine friends made the news recently. Hadleigh’s heroic hound Bowza, a Labrador cross, was featured on BBC Look East and the national press after sharing his body heat with a lady suffering a head injury. Bowza’s proud owner, Don Cox, said the dog seemed to understand the problem and stayed next to the shivering lady for over an hour until an ambulance arrived. My old friend Freddie, a very cute chihuahua cross, became the centre of attention during filming for a Channel 4 TV commercial. The little chap was chosen to appear in an ad with the equally handsome bigger chap in the photo, to advertise “Solidor” front doors. Of course Freddie was completely unfazed by the experience because we chihuahuas are often the star attraction. Apparently he has already be asked for his pawprint and might become more famous than me! I have no idea what animals may be available for rehoming when you read this so please keep an eye on our website or visit when we reopen on Thursday 17th January. Don’t forget to wear your wellies if the weather is wet! My vertically challenged canine friends usually return home with very muddy undercarriages, which is extremely uncomfortable, I can tell you! Time to muscle into the scrum to find a space in front of the Rayburn for me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua. Hadleigh Evening WI Our December Meeting was very Festive. Our speaker was Jackie MarshallWard whose Talk was entitled, ‘My Gran Had One Of Those’. She entered into the spirit of the season by wearing a sparkly silver jacket and matching sparkly silver shoes over a very pretty black dress. Jackie has her own links with the W.I. In 1970 she presented a Resolution, at the National A.G.M. in the Royal Albert Hall. She said that it was the scariest of moments as she stood on the stage, looking out at so many faces and a sea of hats as in those days, “hats were worn”! She has also tutored at Denman, the W.I. college. She told us that she and a friend frequently exhibited their collections at museums and someone was always heard to say, “My Gran had one of those!” Hence, the title of her talk. we were evenly spread over 4 tables and so we were already divided into 4 teams. Jackie had 12 objects which each team examined in turn. We had a certain time in which to decide about each object, its name, its purpose and what it is made of. We were given points for our answers and the winning team were rewarded with chocolate teddies. It was great fun. Jackie joined us all for mulled wine and snacks prepared by the Committee. Joan Ruddman conducted a special raffle in which each member won a prize. We finished with the business of the evening and left full of Christmas spirit. The next meeting will be on 15th, January in the Seminar Room above the Library at 7.30pm. New members are always welcome. Rae Stapleton

Hadleigh Bridge Club A Happy New Year to all our members and other bridge players! In December we had our annual Teams of 4 event, the Gentle Shield. This year we used predealt boards provided by the Suffolk EBU. This means that players can not only see the results, but can view all hands that were played, congratulations to the winning team Ray & Rita, Jo & Mike. The Shield and prizes were awarded at our Christmas Party evening. Earlier in the year we had 5 pairs qualify for the Suffolk semi final with one team reaching the finals. The club also took part in a Simultaneous event in November playing the same hands as eight other clubs in Suffolk. Five pairs were in the top half with scores of over 50%. Again, the boards we played were able to be viewed on our web site. In addition a commentary on each hand was provided by one of Suffolk's best players. The club meets on Monday evenings and Tuesday afternoons, we welcome novices and and lapsed players who would like to take the game up again as well as more experienced players. Don't worry if you don't have a partner as we will try and arrange for you to play with one of our members to get you into the swing of things. HADLEIGH

Hadleigh United Football Club Website www, hadleigh-utd.co.uk Facebook Hadleigh United Football Club - Official First Team News Although we have been playing some decent football and scoring goals unfortunately we have not seen the results we all wish for. Buoyed by our win over higher league side Bury Town our next match saw us at Newmarket Town the hosts took an early lead but we pulled a goal back on 22 minutes to level. Newmarket were reduced to ten men after a player made adverse remarks to the Referee. Ten man Newmarket still posed a threat and they scored again just on half time. We created some chances in the second half as Newmarket defended deeply but they were dangerous on the attack as they ran out winners. On the Wednesday night after the Newmarket match we had a League Cup match at Long Melford again we put in a below par performance on the night to see us go out of this Competition losing 2-0, like most Hadleigh supports who travelled I had the car heating on full blast for the journey home. Next up a trip to Woodbridge on November 24th could we avenge our 5-1 drubbing at Woodbridge in an earlier visit when they knocked us out of the F.A.Cup, unfortunately history repeated itself as we lost by the same scoreline. Norwich Utd were our next visitors as we looked to do the "double" over them which we accomplished by winning 3-2 in a close match as Norwich pressed for a late goal to try for a draw. Again buoyed by the win hopes were high as we travelled for a local derby at Whitton Utd on Saturday 8th Dec, after taking an early lead, Whitton then got level we got back in front when a Romario Dunne free kick was expertly executed and worthy of a Premiership player as his shot cleared the defensive wall to go into the top left hand corner of the Whitton goal, this action then lead to an eight minute goal frenzy as Whitton levelled, we regained the lead, then Whitton levelled to make it 3-3 my pen nib after this was red hot as I scribbled my rough notes, and Gary Chisnall's index finger was getting rather sore as he typed in the results on Twitter. Whitton scored just on half time and scored again early in the second half, we scored on the hour mark, then for some reason we fell way as Whitton put us under pressure. We did rally in the last few minutes but it was a case of too little too late as Whitton took the points. Reserve Team News A home match against Mildenhall saw us run out 8-1 winners as we cemented a top four league position, this goal rout was Shane Murphy score 4, Max Tate with a brace and one each from Joel Cooper & Mitchell Yeo. November 24th saw League Leaders Stowmarket Town the visitors for a quarter final match in the Chell Trophy, I understand we played some excellent first half football as we held Stow to a goalless first half, but their superiority showed in the second half as we crashed to a 4-0 defeat. 1st December saw a short trip to Cornard Utd Res, where we got back to winning ways with a tight 2-1 victory. Whilst the First Team were at Whitton, the Reserves hosted Whitton Reserves but the result went in our favour as the returning Kyron Andrews (recovering from a broken ankle) scored twice with Felix Vardon-Barber, Joel Cooper & Shane Murphy getting on the score sheet in this 5-1 win to secure a joint third league place at time of the notes. Under 18's Team New Unfortunately nothing to report on due to their last matches being postponed due to water logged pitches, they have a long lay off as well as at present no matches are scheduled for January Veterans News (Play on Sundays) They had a scheduled home match on 2nd December, but this was postponed as their opponents Diss Heywood were involved in a Cup match. Sunday 9th December they were in action when Divison One side Achilles were the visitors for a Norfolk & Suffolk League Cup match. Paul Dodsworth make his debut and what a debut it turned out to be as he score a hat-trick, with Stewart Wright (2) and Greg Hills (1) saw them run out 6-0 winners and a place in the next round, not bad going for a Team which plays three divisions lower. Suffolk Rockets Netball Club As we finish our first part of the season we reflect on all the amazing achievements and improvements each player has made in 2018. All our Adult and Junior players have given 110% at every training session and match, we thank everyone for being a part of our thriving club and we cannot wait to see what 2019 brings! Our Junior teams are doing really well in the Colchester Youth League, they go into the new year in the following positions: Celestial Rockets 4th (out of 7); Cosmic Rockets 4th and Apollo Rockets 3rd (out of 7); Saturn Rockets 3rd (out of 9); Galaxy Rockets 7th (out of 11). Our Adult teams, Suffolk Solar and Suffolk Stars finish the year in 4th and 10th place. 2019 is going to open new doors at Suffolk Rockets as we introduce 'Walking Netball', Walking Netball is a slower version of the game; it is netball, but at a walking pace. The game has been designed so that anyone can play it regardless of age or fitness level. From those who have dropped out of the sport they love due to serious injury, to those who believed they had hung up their netball trainers many years ago, it really is for everyone (male/female/16years - 99years!). Come join us on the 26th January 9am 10.30am at Hadleigh High Leisure Centre indoor court, £5per session including cake, we will be running the sessions every two weeks (further information on our website). We are looking for a sponsor for our Walking Netball Club, sponsor would enable us to reach out to more people and to offer them more opportunities to get fit, socialise and to participate in the community, if you would like more information please contact us. We will be returning to training on the 9th January for juniors and adults. We always have room for more Adult players (especially 'back to netball' players), no need to book just turn up 8pm-9.30pm Hadleigh high outdoor courts £4.50 per session.
