It’s Panto time! Are you Curious? As it is Hadleigh Amateur Dramatic Society’s 100th year of putting on entertainment they really want to celebrate in style. Over 25 cast members, young and some not so young have gathered every Sunday since September to rehearse their brilliant new panto Alice In Wonderland. The traditional story has been given a new twist, turn and jiggle, by HADS very own talented Sarah-Jane Clarke, who has played a few roles in HADS past performances. A new member Sophie Hall takes on the role of Alice, she comes to HADS with experience from a previous musical theatre, and her talent is clear as she acts her way on stage and sings songs that everyone will recognise. This year HADS are so proud to boast for the very first time a live band will perform alongside the brave singers on stage. It's safe to say that the talent in this years panto is top class. All the usual characters turn up, look out for that White Rabbit, she pops up everywhere and simply can not wait or she'll be late for the Queens party. As for the Queen of Hearts, she makes Simon Cowell look kind! Double acts Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee are extremely funny, remind me of Morecambe and Wise, their deadpan faces while acting clowns shows how hard they've worked during rehearsals. But don't let me give too much away, you really don't want to miss out on this show, people will be talking about it weeks after. Performances are on 20th, 21st and 22nd of February at 7.30 pm. Matinee performance at 2 pm on the 22nd of February at the United Reform Church. Collaboration - A better approach to separation Separating from a partner can be an extremely difficult time both emotionally and financially. In the past, the more traditional approach to Divorce has been for the parties to resolve their differences in the courtroom, but increasingly, with court delays, this process can often lead to increased stress and cost to both parties. The premise of dealing with separation ‘collaboratively’ is for the parties to agree to achieve a settlement through collaboration as opposed to making an application to the Family Court. In the collaborative process, each party instructs a specialist, collaboratively trained divorce lawyer and all negotiations and decision making takes place in a series of four way meetings attended by both parties and their divorce solicitors. Control is given back to the parties in the divorce to set their own timetable and agenda for these meetings rather than a timetable being imposed by the court. As the parties have a direct input into the agenda they will each be able to discuss issues most pressing to them. It is possible to bring in experts to the four way meetings, where required, such as Independent Financial Advisers to ensure that both parties have the correct assistance to help them make important decisions for the benefit of their family. There is far more flexibility in the Collaborative process than the more traditional court process and so it can often lead to a speedier resolution of issues and therefore reduced legal fees. If the parties have children it is essential that communication is maintained to enable the parents to be able to co-parent their children when they have completed the divorce process. One of the benefits of collaboration is being able to keep the children at the forefront of all discussions in the hope that the impact of the divorce on the children can be minimised. There is still the obligation on the both parties to provide full disclosure of their financial positions to enable the parties to be fully informed before making any decisions. However, the process of providing this information is more informal and less restrictive. Ultimately, the collaborative divorce process hopefully ends with an agreement being reached between the parties which they have both worked towards together rather than a decision being imposed upon them. Yes, a huge heartfelt happy birthday to HADS, with an enormous congratulations to all the team. HADS, Hadleigh Amateur Dramatic Society has been entertaining Hadleigh and neighbouring villages since 1920, with a variety of plays, murder mysteries, pantomimes, discos and quiz nights. In 2014 Trevor Clarke was voted by HADS committee to take on the role of Chairman. “I was already in HADS, but noticed the lack of shows and events. I've always loved things happening in the town and this was my chance!” That new scope brought ‘The Hadleigh Cinderella’ panto played out in front of huge audiences in St Mary’s Church in January 2015. Ever since then HADS has performed a pantomime each and every year with a couple of murder mysteries in between, and not forgetting The Vicar of Dibley. Many cast members come back to audition, an abundance of friendships have formed over the years. If you're looking a different way to meet new people then why not join them in their next new project and this being their 100th year I'm told they have a few surprises up their sleeves. One dedicated member Jo Sheldrake says “The reason people come back is because they all enjoy being part of the panto family. This year being our 100th year, we have a few things planned. Gordon Thomas Mcleod Hadleigh Town Council Election Hadleigh North - 6th February 2020 One of the key things I learned in my 30 years in the London Fire Brigade - serving in some of the busiest, toughest areas in the capital - was that you rarely solve problems alone. Working with other public sector organisations and liaising with private business, my life in the LFB also taught me a great deal about taking real action and standing up and being counted when others needed help. It is with these core beliefs that has led me to stand for a seat on Hadleigh Town Council. I am East London born but have lived in Hadleigh since 2017 (at the top of George Street). It means I am relatively new to the area, but it is an area I and my wife, Carol, and our two sons, quickly fell in love with. During my time here, I have attended a number of council meetings and have watched with interest. I am a staunch believer in teamwork and inclusion. I am also a great believer in the community, and working together to improve it. It is as a councillor that I know I can do most good. I will have to learn the ropes. But I also want to bring new ideas. I will bring hard work, the ability to communicate with all walks of life, take in information and come up with a plan of action. I am passionate about services for our young people, and have a great interest in planning issues. Overall, I will work alongside the community to spur civic pride. After all, this is our town.

Rotary Review Christmas Collection Special A grand total of £1900 was raised this year with the house to house collection producing £1178.10 and two collections at Morrisons £721.90. This was a terrific result especially as we had a slow start due to problems with the sound system and members would like thank most profusely everyone who contributed so generously. This collection has been taking place for nigh on 40 years and Hadleigh people have always supported it with great generosity. As usual the children were at the centre of things and greeted Father Christmas with great enthusiasm - it is great to think that the magic is still there!! Of course, this event does not just happen and as Club members get ever older we become more and more reliant on a loyal band of helpers all of whom deserve a mention and perhaps a medal. One person stands out this year - Gary Hambling of Hambling Utility Services who not only towed the float for three nights but spent a whole day of his valuable time repairing the sound system when it broke down on the first night - many thanks Gary. Also a big thank you to everyone else - firstly the men in red who work very hard: Fred Creed, Richard Whiting, John Robinson,Trevor Clarke and Dan Somers. Additional collectors were Simon Carter, Kerry Carter, George Wyatt, Harry Wilkinson, Steve Allman - it was nice to have the Mayor join us. Steve Blake and Bernie Munson shared the other towing duties and last but not least thanks to Hadleigh Bowling Club for allowing us to keep the float at the green during the collecting period and to Martin Pratt and family for storing it at his farm for the rest of the year, the Club is greatly indebted to all of them. The float and Father Christmas also visited a childrens' party at the Eight Bells much to the surprise and delight of the everyone there. The funds are being distributed and cheques are on their way to Hadleigh Food Bank, Hadleigh Elderly Peoples Welfare Committee, Hadleigh Dementia Alliance, Ann Beaumont Primary School, East Anglia Air Ambulance, Porch Project, Christmas Present Trust and Hadleigh Community Transport Group. Christmas Party: This was held at Hintlesham Golf Club and they looked after us very well indeed, our thanks go to the staff. Although it was a dreadful night outside it was cosy and warm inside and everyone enjoyed good food and company. Champagne Breakfast: held by tradition on the first Saturday in the New Year, members and wives enjoyed a hearty Breakfast provided by The George at Hintlesham. The meal, of course, was washed down with sparkling wine and a big thank you goes to mine host and staff for looking after us so well. Special General Meeting: This was held very recently and the following appointments were made: President 2020/21 Ian Burne, Vice President Fred Creed, Hon Secretary Glenn Abbassi, Hon Treasurer David Stokes. We wish them well in the next Rotary year - they take up their offices in July. Membership: It is with great sadness that we have to record the death of member Frank Ivory. Although Frank had only recently transferred from Sudbury Club he had settled in well and was very well liked. He was a true gentleman. Frank died in mid January aged 93 - We will miss you Frank.

Hadleigh U3A Our next meeting will be on the 10th February when Rick Peacock-Edward will be giving us a talk entitled, ‘Cold War Fighter Pilot’. I apologise to all those members who came along to our January meeting expecting a talk from Robert Burridge, unfortunately this was changed at the last minute due to illness. Thankfully Hilary Martin stepped in with an informative talk about the D-Day landings which I hope you all enjoyed. If you are retired or semi-retired and would like to know more about the U3A and what it can offer, please come along to the talk, pick up some information and meet us all. We meet once a month at the United Reform Church in Market Place, Hadleigh and look forward to welcoming all new and existing members.

Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity Committee Update The Ethical Property Foundation made a visit to the Guildhall Complex just before Christmas to produce a health check report on our premises. Whilst we await their full report, we hope it will assist us in making decisions on the potential future use of the building to enable us to become self sufficient financially. Regular attendees at our meetings (Open to everyone) will be aware that the building and charity are very dependent currently on income from the sole trustee (Hadleigh Town Council) who currently have to support the Charity income to a sum in the region of approx £40 to £50,000 per annum. It is the aim of both the Town Council and the Charity that this building, so important to the town, can somehow reinvent itself and become financially viable in its own right. Fundraising for essential maintenance and repairs continues and we have an exciting agenda of events for the forthcoming year. More details will follow next month, but to begin the New Year and Decade, our first event is as follows: Quiz of the Decade! Come and test your knowledge of the last ten years at our quiz to be held on Saturday 22nd February at 7pm. Teams of 6 people, £10 per head to include hot supper being provided by the Travelling Friar (Cod and Chips, Mega Sausage and chips, or Veggie Medley). Winning Team will be awarded £100 in vouchers. Bar will be open. Get your colleagues to form a team, bring your friends. Come and have a great nights competitive fun and help us raise funds to preserve our building. It may seem strange to start off by talking about Christmas in February, but I attended a number of events over the festive season and would like to raise awareness of some of these groups. Firstly, well done to Simon, Sarah and the rest of the Christmas Present Trust volunteers who organised the community lunch at the Ansell Centre on Christmas Day. Christmas can be a difficult time for some, especially those who are isolated, so it was great to see so much support for this event on the day, it was a lovely atmosphere and I enjoyed chatting to so many of you. In the lead up to Christmas, I also joined the Hadleigh Rotary Club to help them, and Father Christmas, with their annual street collection, which raised over £2000 last year. Father Christmas spends a week travelling around Hadleigh in his sleigh and all monies raised goes to support local groups. I understand he could use a few more helpers, so please get in touch if you can help. Staying with the unseasonal theme, I also enjoyed attending the Hadleigh Parkside Pre-School Christmas Party and the Hadleigh Community Choir Christmas concert. Finally, it was good to see so many of you at the Town Council’s own Christmas event in the Market Place. It was the first year that the event has been reintroduced and funded by the Town Council and I’d like to pass on my thanks to the Town Council’s working group for their efforts in organising the event. Towards the end of last year, I also attended the Big Think event, organised by Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance. Hadleigh was the first town in Suffolk to be recognised for working towards being a dementiafriendly community and HDAA has created more than 1800 dementia friends to support people in our local community. The Big Think brought together a number of local organisations to explore how we can continue to support people with dementia in our community. Hadleigh High School held their Year 12 Presentation Evening shortly before Christmas and invited me to present the certificates and awards, which are supported by the Town Council, and it was great to spend an evening in the company of such hard-working young people and celebrate their achievements. 2020 is already shaping up to another busy year and the town has a number of large events to look forward to, including hosting BBC Suffolk to launch Suffolk Day in June and events to mark Armed Forces Day and VE Day this summer. My diary is already filling up and I’m looking forward to visiting a number of community groups before my term ends in May, but there’s always room for more, so please do get in touch if you’d like Carolyn or myself to come along to your event. Finally, I’m pleased to announce that the Town Council welcomed Andy McMillan, our new Town Council Manager in January and we’re pleased to finally have fulltime support in the office, with further recruitment to follow in the coming months. Hadleigh Elderly Peoples Welfare Committee The distribution of Christmas vouchers took place during December and some 480 vouchers worth £11 each were given out to the over 70s in Hadleigh. The vouchers were funded by the Christmas Appeal and, as always, the businesses and charities in the town responded most generously providing a grand sum of £4841.00. The Committee is very grateful for this tremendous support and thanks very much indeed all those who contributed with special thanks going to major donors, Hadleigh Thrift Shop, Hadleigh Farmers Agricultural Association, Franey Rand and Pest House Charities, Aldham Common Charity, McCarthy & Stone, Plant Parts Ltd, Roma International PLC, Hadleigh Castings Ltd. Many thanks go also to all the voucher deliverers who play such an important part in ensuring that the vouchers reach the recipients safely. Their help in invaluable. We were delighted this month to welcome quite a number of new members and our meeting had a real buzz! Our Speaker was Sharon Smith from the Moths and Butterfly Conservation Society.She informed us that there are far more Moths than Butterflies in our area and she went on to tell us about different species and their particular environmental needs. There are specialists, such as the Slow Carpet Moth, which are rare and generalists, such as the Painted Lady, which are found all over the landscape. Last year was a record year with a big influx over Northumberland and Scotland. They like Buddleia but also need Thistles. The White Letter Hairstreak is seen in July. It feeds on Elm but up in the canopy where it just sits until, every now and then, a pair will spiral up together and come down again to sit. The Silver-Studded Blue, which is found in Heathland, has a special partnership with ants. They look after the caterpillars, which secrete tiny drops of a kind of sugar, which the ants like and they also guard the vulnerable butterflies as they first emerge to dry their wings. The Grayling lays its eggs on dried up stems of grass and so it needs bare ground but then needs flowers when the butterflies appear. The Conservation Society advises Landowners and Farmers on managing their land to promote butterfly and moth friendly environments. The Brecks in Norfolk and Suffolk used to be an area of sand dunes. The Conservationists got diggers in to dig up the edges where beautiful wild flowers then grew. Apparently we have a moth called a Plumed Prominent, which is only known in the woodlands between Hadleigh and Lavenham. Sharon mentioned lots of other butterflies and moths and the vegetation where they flourish. In our own gardens, Buddleia is good for butterflies and Blackthorn and Ivy are good for caterpillars. To see the caterpillars one must go out with a torch at night! Anyone can volunteer to spot butterflies and moths and there is to be a Big Butterfly Count in July when people can look in their own garden and go on te website to give their results to the National Conservation Society. St Maryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Renewal Update Building Plans for The 2020â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s The architects have presented the committee with forward looking plans for a much needed phased programme of major repairs and renewal to the church based on a brief drawn up by the committee and including suggestions made by the community of Hadleigh during various focus group meetings, and giving us a clear view of what we want to achieve in the next few years. We will be engaging a Quantity Surveyor to give us cost estimates, and we will also be required to consult with such organisations as the Diocesan Advisory Committee, Heritage England, the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, The Victorian Society, The Church Building Council and Babergh District Council as well as others. It is likely to be a lengthy process, but we do hope to bring forward the most pressing work as soon as possible. Do support us in this worthy project. A ÂŁ300,000 seed fund is already available to cover costs and fees for administration, architects and structural engineers, and give us a working capital to build on, enabling us to apply for grants and to actively seek donations and sponsorship for the renewal to move forward. We will update you all through 2020 as we progress in this challenge for the future of St Maryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. Repairs To The Sacristy Roof Work is progressing well, but due to unforeseen work in re-pointing the 500 year old flint work walls and also extensive deterioration of the integrity of the parapet walls they are being rebuilt. This means that the contract is extended into 2020. The cost of this extra work will amount to approximately ÂŁ15,000 more than the original estimate of ÂŁ35,000 + VAT and we thank The Friends of St Maryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Church who have agreed to cover the the complete costs of this repair work.

The Official Opening of Hadleigh Foodbank On the 15th of January 2020 we officially opened the Hadleigh Foodbank. Although we had been up and running, we are now in the position to declare that it is fully functional. The office is within the Hadleigh business centre and we would like to thank the business centre for make this a reality. I had been looking for premises for the last two years without success, so this is perfect. Thank you once again… We would also like to say a Mac Speake of Brett Valley Lodge great big thank you to Hadleigh officially opens the Hadleigh Foodbank based ‘Brett Valley Lodge’ who have kindly donated towards the Foodbank, of which some has been used for racking and bags etc and the balance will go towards the rent to help keep the foodbank available to all. Also, a big thank you to Persimmon homes who have kindly donated to the Hadleigh food bank. Again, these funds will be so important in the ongoing working of the foodbank. It will also help towards some local coffee mornings and potential lunches to help raise awareness of the Foodbank. Local supermarkets, shops and shoppers have been and continue to be so very generous and we cannot thank you all enough. Every donation really does make a difference no matter how big or small. It is important to know we are totally independent from any other foodbank or voucher scheme system that some others choose to run. I wanted to create a transparent, non-judgmental, non-voucher system to help those in need as quickly as possible. The Hadleigh Food bank is proud to be able to offer this and stand out on its own and will continue to operate in this way. All the work and time is 100% non-profit and any funds raised from events will be used for and within the foodbank. Suffolk Bereavement Support – Sharing Resuming group meetings after the festive break the feeling of closeness and trust within our group was palpable. Much of this is derived from the principle of sharing experiences which we value as an important therapeutic approach. Sharing in this way helps the expression feelings, reactions and experiences that might be difficult to talk about in many other settings. Although each person’s grief experience may be different there are also similarities and this helps members feel less alone and isolated. Sharing often leads to the generation of coping strategies too, as group support kicks in, and this can help motivate others to try out various approaches for themselves. This week for example, we looked at ideas for coping with various situations following a bereavement. A further benefit of sharing is that members are able to talk about their loved ones, about their lives together and sometimes their foibles. Such reminiscence is often an early step towards being able to change painful memories to something that brings comfort and solace. If this blog is meaningful for you in connection with a bereavement, be it recent or further back in time then why not come and join a Suffolk Bereavement Support group? Our afternoon group is held in central Hadleigh on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month from 1.30pm-3.00pm and our Capel St. Mary group meets in the early evening on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month from 6.30pm-8.00pm. Welcome to the newest venue in Hadleigh High Street We are excited to announce the opening of Cobblers Cafe and Wine Bar at 9am on Wednesday 5th February. Why the name Cobblers? In the 1940s, 76 High Street was a Cobblers shoe repairers run by Mr Elliott so we wanted to keep a bit of the history of the building and the name definitely has ring to it! The inspiration for this venture derived from various trips we made to France and Spain spending many relaxing days and evenings in wine caverns or bars and cafes watching the world go by. We wanted to bring something different to the High Street as it stands today. A venue you can visit, have a drink and some nibbles without having a heavy meal or being rushed. The ground floor is industrial in style with handmade tables, bench seat and bar with up to 28 covers and washroom. Upstairs we have 3 separate rooms. A bright sunny coffee lounge, a reading room with books and games for children and adults to enjoy and a dining room which seats 8-10, along with a Powder Room. This is a perfect space for private events whether you hire the entire space or just one of the lovely rooms. We will also be offering an indulgent Dessert Table Package for private events so if you would like to host with us please do get in touch. We will be serving breakfast, lunch and light suppers, with locally sourced products wherever possible. Delicious freshly made cakes, tray bakes and scones will be available all day. But building a single new smartphone and in particular mining the rare materials needed to build one - takes as much energy as recharging and operating a smartphone for an entire decade. Hadleigh Walkers Our February walk on Saturday 8th will be a circular walk of 10 miles from Brent Eleigh. We will meet up at 0930 by the entrance to the Brent Eleigh church located about 100m up the lane opposite the Cock pub on the A1141 Hadleigh to Lavenham Road. Parking is located just before the church. From there we will follow a counterclockwise route via Nova Scotia Lane, Kettlebaston, High House Farm, Preston St Mary, Hillhouse Farm, Lavenham, Meadow Close, Bear’s Lane Farm and on to the Brent Eleigh Cock for a welcome refreshment. The walk duration will be around 4 hours. If anyone is without transport it would help if you let us know via the website contact page so arrangements can be made if possible with someone leaving from Hadleigh. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground will almost certainly muddy or rough in places. The DIY Deli Hot-smoked Duck This is a deli speciality that is not available in many supermarkets. The amount shown serves 4-6. Essential equipment An orange zester, A BBQ with a temperature gauge or a purpose built smoker, A pestle and mortar, Scales capable of weighing small quantities Ingredients 4 boneless duck breasts, 1 large orange For each kg of meat, each of the following, 2.5g Prague powder no 1 - this must be exact, 75g coarse sea salt, 75g soft brown sugar, 3g paprika, 4g fresh sage 3g garlic powder, 3g freshly ground black pepper, 1 tbsp Hoi Sin sauce Method 1. Weigh the meat to determine the amounts to be used for the cure 2. Zest and squeeze the juice from the orange and place in a bowl 3. Introduce the Prague powder and stir well 4. Chop the sage finely; add to the bowl, together with the Hoi Sin sauce and stir 5. Weight the remaining dry ingredients into the mortar and use the pestle to ensure there are no lumps. Stir with a teaspoon to ensure even distribution; add to the bowl and stir 6. Prick the skin of the duck at 1” intervals with a sharp meat fork or pointed paring knife; this will help the smoke penetrate 7. Pat the duck dry. Roll in the paste and wrap the 4 pieces in a food grade plastic bag, together with the rest of the paste, to form a single parcel. Place the bag on a plate without stacking the contents; fold the open end to seal. 8. Place the plate & parcel in the fridge and allow to marinate for 4 hours, turning hourly. 9. Remove and unwrap the duck, wash off the cure and pat dry with kitchen paper. 10. Return the duck to a rack in the fridge and allow to dry overnight. 11. Pre-heat the smoker or BBQ to 120℃; fill the smoke generator with presoaked cherry wood chips. 12. Place the duck on the smoker rack, skin side up, and hot smoke until the internal temperature of the meat reaches 65℃ - around 1-1½ hours. To serve: serve hot with your choice of fresh vegetables or cold with redcurrant jelly. Storage: not suitable for freezing; will keep in the fridge for up to 1 week, or 2 weeks if vacuum packed.

At cabinet meetings this week, councillors at Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils gave the go ahead to support Citizens Advice (CA) with more than £420k. Recognising the value of Citizens Advice which is estimated to have saved £8.1m across Suffolk, and with growing numbers turning to them for help - both councils have agreed a more sustainable funding approach with two three-year funding agreements. In Babergh, funds of at least £160,500 for Sudbury and District Citizens Advice were also given the green light over the same three-year period, equating to £53,500 per annum. Smaller levels of funding for the Suffolk West, Diss and Ipswich CAs will continue to be agreed annually, with the individual CAs needing to apply for the money on a yearly basis. Cabinet member for communities at Babergh District Council, Cllr Derek Davis, said: “Our colleagues at Citizens Advice do amazing work to support Babergh’s residents when they perhaps need it most, offering expert advice and guidance on money matters and much more. “We hope that with this longer-term funding, they can continue to deliver a muchneeded service, helping our communities to thrive and be more self-sufficient, whilst also playing a key role in achieving the aims in our Communities Strategy.” Exact amounts of funding will be confirmed in the early part of 2020, alongside funding to other voluntary sector providers, as part of the councils' grants programme. The councils will also work with the Suffolk Cross Authority Citizens Advice Task and Finish Group - made up of councillors from Ipswich, Babergh, Mid Suffolk and West Suffolk councils with input from Suffolk County Council – which aims to provide a more consistent scrutiny approach to CA services across Suffolk.

History and German Trip to Berlin Our trip to Berlin in November 2019 was a great experience. We visited famous sights such as: The Brandenburg Gate, The Reichstag Building, The East Side Gallery and The Holocaust Memorial, all of which were captivating and we learnt a lot about them from our teachers and tour guides. Another great aspect of the trip was that we used public transport which allowed us to spend a lot of our time in the city centre, experiencing Berlin culture and its history. We also dined at restaurants each night which allowed us to further experience German culture. A highlight of the trip was the Topography of Terror, where we heard about the lives of the German people and the Jews’ harsh experience in camps. Overall the trip to Berlin felt personalised and inclusive for everyone’s interests. I would highly recommend this trip to anyone in the future. Written by Hollie Warner Year 11. The Hadleigh Historian Issue 56 (February – March 2020) When starting research for the article ‘Dr Trumbull The Hadleigh Historian and his funeral cavalcade’, I did not expect the story The Hadleigh Historian to take me to the West Indies or uncover an unusual arrangement in Hadleigh parish church whereby a dismissed incumbent continued to hold services. Official dates for Charles Trumball’s rectorship are 1679 to 1691 but his successor, although not in sympathy with the reason for Charles’ dismissal, nevertheless, allowed him until 1708 to continue living at the rectory (behind Deanery Towers), conduct services as before and receive benefits owing to the office. It would seem that Charles was held in such high esteem not only by parishioners but also by gentlemen from miles around that when he died at Edwardstone in 1724, his coffin was accompanied on the journey by hundreds of horsemen and over a dozen coaches for his burial in St Mary’s chancel, the fitting place for a rector of Hadleigh. Jeff Ward of Stanway continues his occasional series ‘Stories from the War Memorials’ with a biography of James Herbert Newman of Hadleigh alias Harold Newman of Dunedin, New Zealand. Jeff has traced the military career of James – or should it be Harold – which took him to Sudan under General Kitchener. Unfortunately for James, he was about to retire when the First World War broke out in 1914 and so became the oldest person named on Hadleigh’s war memorials to be killed-in-action. ‘The Manors of Hadleigh’ has reached part 3 of the story of Hadleigh Hall. The period 1741 – 1848 is covered when a ‘great benefactress’ and two absentee lords including the rector of Carlton Coalville near Lowestoft were lessees of the manor. ‘Following the photographer’ looks at two different locations in High Street sometime in the early 20th century with the same young man appears in both pictures standing in the middle of the road wearing his shop apron. ‘Lost buildings’ features an egg-packing business run by John Crickmore, who fought for king and country during the Second World War when he became a prisoner-of-war of the Japanese in Thailand. On his return to England at the end of 1945, John bought up an old warehouse in Market Place and established Hadleigh Egg Packing Station. I would be most pleased to hear from you if you would like to share your memories of this or any other Hadleigh buildings that no longer exist. I have just attended a very interesting and informative five-week course held at Hadleigh Library by the Worker’ Education Association (WEA) concerning timber framed buildings tutored by John Walker of Layham. Three more courses concerning house history, medieval festivities and literature are being held in February, April and June respectively, which are designed especially to provide local interest. Much research has been carried out on the effect of a patient’s surroundings on their sense of well-being and ultimately the healing process. Not surprisingly the studies have shown that art in a care environment can not only brighten up spaces but also reduce anxiety and stress for patients and in some settings provide positive distractions. These ‘settings’ can also be extended to the natural environment. This was clearly demonstrated by Swedish physician and hospital designer, Dr Roger Ulrich, who monitored a group of patients recovering from gall bladder operations. Those with a pleasant view of trees from their hospital beds made a speedier recovery, required less painkillers and were generally more cheerful than those who looked out onto a brick wall. By supplementing medicine and care, the arts and nature can lessen pain, stress and ultimately healthcare costs. Engaging in the arts can promote prevention of disease and physical and mental build wellbeing. The arts in the workplace can also benefit staff retention and professional development. The hope is that someday the arts will be considered as significant in everyone’s lives as breathing fresh air, eating clean foods, and performing physical exercise. At a local level and responding to this understanding, the Hadleigh and Boxford Patient Participation Group (PPG) has transformed the Old Dispensary into a mini art gallery. February marks the third display of local artist’s work with an impressive collection of cartoons from Bryan Haylock. Bryan’s skilfully executed drawings are greatly enhanced by his unique sense of humour and fun. Many residents will have already enjoyed brief snatches of his work in the window of his bookshop The Idler. For the next three months there is an opportunity to savour more and if you wish to continue to enjoy any of the paintings long after the exhibition has closed, some of the cartoons are for sale. 10% of the purchase price will go towards The Hadleigh and Boxford Medical Practice Charitable Trust. On Tuesday 17th December 2019, Mr Peters and Mr Pilkington visited Thomas in his new school to present him this new award for the 2018/19 academic year. Thomas will be invited in on Sports Day 2020 to present this award to the next pupil for the 2019/20 academic year. Well done Thomas, a worthy winner! On Thursday 9th January 2020, we entered a Year 6 team into the Under 11's EFL Cup at Ipswich Town Football Club. There were a total of 16 schools that had entered the competition. We were put into Group D where we played matches against Woolpit and Sebertwood B. Due to a team dropping out of our league, the boys had to play both schools in our league twice. Our team played fantastically throughout the group matches and managed to win all 4, meaning we topped Group D! Because we finished top of our league, Hadleigh have qualified for next week's Super 8's final, with a chance of making it to the regional finals. Well done Year 6! James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk January was certainly a busy first full month of this new Parliament. The Bill that turns the Prime Minister’s Brexit deal into the law of the land has now passed right through the House of Commons and, with a majority guaranteed, the UK will leave the EU on Friday 31st January. We then move into a short transition period to negotiate our long-term arrangements with our European neighbours. Throughout the election, including at the hustings debates, I stressed my belief that if we won a working majority the realisation of being able to move the country forward would boost business confidence – in fact, we have just seen the most positive bounce in entrepreneurial optimism on record, as far as the respected Deloitte CFO survey is concerned. I also said that passing that deal would free up Government bandwidth to concentrate on our other big challenges – and we have had a Queen’s Speech setting out a range of bold proposals for infrastructure, the environment, our public services and the justice system. For me it’s been a case of getting back into the groove of: constituency surgeries, casework and correspondence; questions in the House; and ensuring the voice of South Suffolk continues to be heard as an army of new MPs joins the throng, each with their own critical causes. Within hours of all being sworn in days after the election, at my instigation, Suffolk’s seven MPs joined forces to send a letter to the Transport Secretary reminding him of the importance of the A14 to Britain’s economy. A major issue that kept coming up on the doorstep in December was the future of the high street. At the first Local Government questions of the session I asked Ministers to ensure that our promised review of business rates considers the unlevel playing field traditional retailers face against the newly dominant digital marketplace. In the coming months there will be many other areas in which to make progress: our under-performing rail service; recruiting more police officers; raising school funding with a new and fairer formula; ensuring a viable future for our farmers.

Hadleigh Community Choir A big thank you again to the audience at our Christmas concert who donated so much through their tickets and the other fundraising on the night. Stella Scanlon and I went over to Ipswich to present a cheque to Hannah Walker at Fresh Start, New Beginnings. I don’t know what bank Stella’s with but she’s obviously going to have to get a bigger handbag, or perhaps a small van when she goes shopping until she discovers contactless. We were both in awe at the support the staff and volunteers offer at Fresh Start to children and young people across all ages who’ve been sexually abused. They work individually and later in small groups, and with their parents, in all sorts of imaginative and engaging ways. Their task is sensitive and challenging in a very difficult and important field. In the meantime the choir are starting rehearsals again ready for a concert of show tunes on 11 July. Lovely songs from Les Mis, Chicago, West Side Story, 42nd Street and so on. My only concern is a bouncy number written by Gershwin about a double bass called Slap That Bass. I’m just a bit worried it could confuse fishermen who might take to the streets protesting that we’re encouraging violent attacks on fish. But be brave. If you enjoy singing or you’d like to try it, come along when we practice on Thursdays at 7.30pm at the United Reformed Church in Hadleigh. Workplace lung related illnesses and welding

Work-related respiratory diseases are caused or made worse by breathing in hazardous substances that damage the lungs such as dusts, fumes and gases. The most common of these are chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma and silicosis. Who is likely to be affected by lung related illnesses? In Britain there are approximately 12,000 deaths annually due to occupational respiratory diseases, and two-thirds are due to asbestosrelated diseases or COPD. In 2019 the International Agency for Research on Cancer published data showing that exposure to welding fumes can cause lung cancer and possibly kidney cancer. It is estimated that there are up-to 80,000 welders employed in Britain, including those working in jobs involving welding to some degree. What lung related illnesses are linked to welding? It is known that welders are more prone to lung infections, reduced lung function and may experience irritation of the throat and lungs. Welders may also experience flu like symptoms which is usually linked to welding on galvanised metals, as well as mild steel. Welding fumes (which includes irritating gases such as oxides of nitrogen and ozone) can cause irritation and what is known as â&#x20AC;&#x153;metal fume feverâ&#x20AC;?. Welding fumes in the longer term can lead to lung diseases and increase the risk of occupational asthma and cancer. Abrasive blasting which is often done prior to welding produces dust that includes metals, metal oxides and often contains respirable crystalline silica (RCS). A person exposed to RCS without appropriate personal protective equipment will be at risk of developing silicosis. Silicosis is a disease that makes breathing difficult and can increase the risk of lung infections. Silicosis generally follows after many years of exposure to RCS, however exceptionally high exposures over only a few months or years can cause acute silicosis which can cause death within months of exposure. Heavy and prolonged exposure to RCS under the conditions that produce silicosis can cause lung cancer. Silicosis can take years to develop and be diagnosed for this reason it can often difficult to trace the insurers of the employer for whom an individual worked. Gotelee use the Employersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Liability Tracing Office and records held at Companies House to trace the insurance company that provided cover at the time of employment so as to make a claim for compensation. Can I bring a claim against my former employer? Workers diagnosed with a work-related disease such as silicosis have three years from the date of diagnosis to bring a claim for compensation against their former employer. Thank you for the Day Dear Hadleigh. We are pleased to report that the Christmas Day meal and entertainment were very well received, with around 90 volunteers and guests coming together in the Ansell Centre to share food, music and conversation in what was our fifth annual event. On Christmas Eve a host of volunteers had transformed the building into a winter wonderland so that the day itself could be extra special, and you can see photos of this on our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/christmaspresenttrust. We were also joined by the Mayor Steve Allman and his family and our Deputy Mayor Carolyn Cammack, who joined in welcoming guests and making sure the day went smoothly. We would like to say a huge thank you to all those who gave their time to volunteer at the event; we cannot do this without a great deal of support. There are too many people to thank individually but we would like to make a special point of thanking all those who collected our guests and brought them to the Ansell Centre as well as all those who peeled spuds, parsnips, carrots and sprouts and did the washing up and cleaning! News from St Mary’s Primary School A warm welcome to the new children who have joined us this term! At the start of term, a professional photographer came into school to take pictures of every aspect of the busy school day for our new website which has now been launched. A professional artist, Jo Chapman, has visited Year 5 to work with pupils on designing a collaborative piece, which will adorn a screen on the exterior of the new swimming pool. The children have worked on abstract designs inspired by the emotions experienced through physical activity. Active maths continues to be a regular feature: year 5, for example, raced around the hall in teams rounding numbers and challenging each other to get the most questions answered in the time allowed, year 4 took part in beetle maths, which involved putting a multiple in the centre of the beetle and working out 6 possible calculations to make the multiple, and year 3 have been chanting and clapping multiplication by 3s and 4s. Times tables rock stars is also popular, especially when it means ‘battles’ between year groups! Our children are encouraged to be physically as well as mentally active: the outdoor fitness equipment and the gym trail are always in use before, during and after school, and this term years 2, 3 and 4 are enjoying weekly swimming lessons.

Ho ho, this is the leap month! I hope the extra day is a bonus to you all, and that people learning their 4 x table enjoy working out other leap years in their lives. Did you know how important maths is in my life? As a simulator I should not be able to work without the computer programme that runs me. My little old friend BABS is entirely electrical mechanical, someone from another age, bless her. But we work together to help those riders who can’t be on a live horse when they come to the Shelley Centre. You all know how boring the winter months are, what with the dark evenings, the rain and the mud. I can hardly report on anything exciting happening up here since Christmas, and I have to admit that I failed to get 30 people to give me their reasons for being involved here before the year of our 30th anniversary ended. Luckily our umbrella organisation copied my idea and went for 50 people to celebrate the 50th birthday of the Riding for the Disabled Asosiation and the page on their website is truly brilliant. www.rda.org/50-faces/ I thought I’d borrow a couple of examples to whet your appetite, or in case you don’t get to browse that page yourself. This is an ex jockey, now an RDA client: Tyrone Williams: “In my career I rode about 850 winners. When you’re an apprentice, you can’t wait to go racing. 15 years in, it’s just another day. I never got nervous, but I promise you now you’ve got to have bottle. I can’t think about that now. I had the stroke 3 years ago when I was 49. I wasn’t racing anymore but I was still riding out. I couldn’t tell you what happened for the first three months. I didn’t know where I was. Every day after that I’ve been trying to get better.I didn’t know about RDA until I moved back to Lambourn. It’s a big step. I’d been used to riding horses my whole life but I hadn’t ridden for two years. I wasn’t sure I could do it. Right from the first day I was determined to walk to the mounting block and leave my wheelchair at the gate. Getting on wasn’t pretty, but we’ve found a way. When I got on that first time I remember feeling so happy and thinking that’s it – I’m back. Coming to RDA is a new step. From where I am now, I can only get better.” This is Matt, Para-Showjumper and dressage competitor who is deaf: “So there’s lots of bits to my RDA story, and it’s all really important to me. I think in sign language, then I have to remember the English words and then I have to try and remember the English grammar and what order I should put the words in, and change them from how I have it in sign in my head and put it in English. In my family I am the only one who is deaf. It’s difficult when there’s lots of hearing people and they’re having a conversation and I don’t know what’s going on, or I say something and I’m interrupting because they are talking about something different. The autism also makes it hard for me. I don’t always like being with people all the time. So I suppose now my life is all about the horses, and everything that links with them. We came here when I was six. And I was just happy when I was with the horses. When I started riding I had a leader and side walkers. We went slowly so it was easy for someone to walk next to me and do signing. As I got better and faster that was a bit of a problem! These days I have my own horse and I compete in Para-Showjumping and dressage. I’m really proud to be a volunteer. When I started I did things like grooming, helping with tacking up, and things around the yard. As I got older and started doing more on the computer I found there were other things that I could do to help. That developed into social media, and now that’s the focus of the volunteering work I do. The aim is to make people aware of what’s happening, to get them involved and get more people to understand what we do.” So my thanks to two men who showcase different aspects of the RDA and I do hope you’ll enjoy exploring the lives of the other 48! The Hadleigh Steering Group is a forum for sharing useful information and is open to everyone in the Town. The last meeting was held on Monday 13 January 2020. Chair Jan Byrne. Guest Speaker Phil Owen – Sporting Memories Groups, Suffolk Sporting Memories was started by two friends who were mental health nurses in 2011 as a not-for-profit organisation in Scotland. They wanted to bring their love of sports to help people who were living in isolation, living with dementia or simply lonely. In 2012 they received a small pot of funding to test their concept in Leeds which widened over the years to 120 groups nationally, partnering with 200 organisations to deliver these groups. They also have a presence in Australia. Dementia UK is a partner and they work with care homes, hospitals and local groups. Their main client base is aged 50+ running at a ratio of 70/30, men/women. They work closely in alignment with national health care policies encouraging health and wellbeing through the groups which run fluidly with broad guidelines, led by a volunteer with half the session being reminiscing/talking about sports of all kinds followed by refreshments then the second half encouraging physical activities: table-tennis, indoor curling, bowls, darts, putting etc. They currently have around 700 committed volunteers who love sports and want to support their communities. Their aim is to have 300 groups running nationally. Suffolk’s rural project is currently funded by the National Lottery, the Suffolk Foundation and Babergh Mid Suffolk Councils. There are 4 locations, each holding a monthly group but these are linked by a community bus (Sudbury’s Go Start service) so attendees could go to all four sessions – once a week. Groups are in Sudbury, Glemsford, Long Melford and Lavenham. They are also working with our Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance through Jill Mason’s Together Tuesday sessions. Standard Updates 4.1 Hadleigh Town Council https://hadleigh.suffolk.cloud Andy McMillan is now in post and addressing staffing issues in the back office, reviewing office processes and procedures and working closely with Councillors. Once the essential strands of the business are sorted, project management can start. The website is also being looked at to ensure good communication with the town. There are two Councillor vacancies for Hadleigh North with an election on 6 Feb. Anyone wishing to stand for election should contact Andy. 4.2 Babergh & Mid Suffolk District Council There was no one present to give a report. 4.3. VisitHadleigh, Hadleigh Legacy Group, Community Gardeners www.visithadleighsuffolk.co.uk Email: info@visithadleighsuffolk.co.uk. Stuart advised that Visit Hadleigh’s AGM will take place at Hadleigh Pool & Leisure on Monday 27 January, refreshments at 5.45 for a 6pm start. Anyone interested in the work of Visit Hadleigh and encouraging tourism in Hadleigh is welcome to attend. Jane S noted that the second set of railings has now been placed in the Cedric Morris Gardens. Evergreen flowering climbers will be planted in Spring. The wildflower meadow is due to be rotovated ready for seeds to be sown. Sadly, the slate information sign in front of the wild flower meadow has been damaged. A reminder, please, to pass on (contacts above) dates of all community events in 2020 for uploading to website. 4.4 Tidy Town Email: ourtidytown@gmail.com Anita reported a well deserved break was taken over Christmas/New Year. Now back, fly tipping around the Magdalen Road recycling area has reached unacceptable proportions. Only items that are described on the recycle bins should be placed in them. NOTHING should be left lying on the ground around the bins (including any cardboard boxes used to bring the recycling). This is classed as fly tipping and is a criminal offence. Tidy Town have reported the misuse of the facility to Babergh Council. All materials can be taken to the main recycling centre on the Lady Lane Industrial Estate. 4.5 Hadleigh & Boxford Patient Participation Group Jan D reported that the third art exhibition of local artists would be in place off Reception at the end of January. The Envisage Board has been updated in the Health Centre to draw attention to this. Anyone wishing to exhibit, or knows someone who might, should contact Jan D on devys@btinternet.com.All ages welcome. 4.6 Hadleigh Food Bank No one present to give an update. 4.7 HEAT No one was present to give an update. 5 AOB Hadleigh Society: The Hadleigh Local List: The Hadleigh Society was formed in 1982 by locals to encourage an interest in the history, environment and future of Hadleigh. To raise awareness of our rich history and heritage; to actively support and promote high planning standards, conservation, regeneration and

development within the district and to contribute to the preservation and protection of Hadleigh’s historical documents, artefacts and buildings. HadSoc and the Town Council are working on a local list of the lesser-known, non-designated heritage assets (including interesting new builds & open spaces). There are currently 246 listed buildings in Hadleigh (the second highest number in Suffolk). Others, which may not reach the national criteria for Listing, could still be of huge interest locally and everyone is encouraged to nominate buildings/artefacts etc for consideration for inclusion in a “Championship Division” of unlisted properties and open spaces. This information could also be of great use in forming future local policies and once approved by Babergh, put into our Neighbourhood Plan. Please see the above website or collect a nomination form from the Town Council offices. It is hoped to complete this List by December 2020. 5.2 2020 Royal British Legion Planned Events RBL is taking the lead on the following events in 2020. Mark Brennan apologised for not being able to attend. Thurs 7 May: Official opening of the newly created Peace Garden/outdoor study area in Hadleigh Community Primary School. Fri 8 May (Bank Hol): VE Day 75th Anniversary Tea Party. 2pm – 4pm in the Dining Room of the Town Hall. Guests include 75 Hadleigh residents born on or before VE Day 1945. All dress will be 1940’s. Entertainment will include a 40’s fashion show and a “songs that won the war” gang show. Sun 14 June: 7Bn REME anniversary parade. Hoping to parade through town to mark the 25th anniversary of their arrival in Suffolk. Weds 24 June (date TBC): Babergh are planning to mark Armed Forces Week with an event in Hadleigh. Info to follow. Sat 27 June: Hadleigh Armed Forces Day - Fete on lower George Street 10am till 2pm. Sat 15/Sun 16 Aug: A reflective, rather than celebratory, event will be organised by the RBL to mark this key anniversary. Many Hadleigh men lost their lives during the war in the Far East. 5.3.Rev’d Jo Delfgou informed the HSG that after a year in role he remains concerned about the youngsters who continue to frequent the church porch and seem not to want to engage with The Porch Project or other organisations. He encourages them not to smoke cannabis or drink and to desist from spitting and littering in the porch. He is organising a meeting on 22 February in St Mary’s to which he is inviting head teachers, police, uniformed organisations, Hadleigh TownCouncil and residents/businesses of Hadleigh to discuss the matter and see if there is any positive way forward (rather than rehashing any history) with this systemic problem. The Porch Project has given notice that as of the end of March they will no longer be using St Mary’s for their drop-in sessions using, instead, their HQ at 28a High Street. 5.4 Stuart raised the question of guest speakers at HSG. It was discussed and felt that we are losing sight of the HSG being Hadleigh-centric and that speaker topics, although mostly interesting, are not providing sufficient interest in, for or about Hadleigh. It was agreed that in future (with the exception of any speakers already confirmed), time would be allowed for local matters to be raised and discussed in detail as required. February will see Andy McMillan presenting on Hadleigh Town Council (as planned) and the April Chair has confirmation of a booking of Screen Suffolk. All other future speakers will be agreed at each meeting. 5.5 Hadleigh Hidden Gardens will take place on Sat 6 June. Proceeds raise money for the Friends of St Mary’s Church Hadleigh in order to repair, renovate and renew this wonderful Grade 1 listed building and keep it relevant for the community. If you feel you could help and open your garden (every possible type of garden is needed) you need to enrol by 29 February 2020. Hadleigh & District Garden Club Monday January 13th 2020: Well, if you thought bees just buzzed about from flower to flower pollinating then think again! Hawk Honey, our speaker for January, was full of fascinating insights into the life of bees, particularly solitary bees which are in decline. These insects vary in length from 2 millimetres up to the large bumble bee we are all familiar with in our gardens. Each has its own way of raising young, feeding them and protecting them. One solitary bee lays its eggs in empty snail shells, seals the shell and then gathers material to make a wigwam over the shell to disguise it. As well as giving us a slide show there were also some videos which really brought the whole thing to life. These solitary bees are specific feeders and honeybees, which far outnumber them, will push the solitary bee out of their territory. This is one of the reasons for the decline of the solitary bee, along with intensive farming, loss of hedgerows and meadows, the use of nitrates in agriculture and of course, climate change. Gardeners can help by providing food such as dandelions, wildflowers and open flowered plants, as well as ensuring there are materials for making nests - for example a bee hotel made from small pieces of bamboo cane and also providing areas of damp ground so that mud is available (no trouble with that at the moment!). The final piece of advice was 'don't be too tidy' - music to my ears, and hopefully the bees! The competition 'a photo of your garden' was won by Kate so congratulations to her. As well as a large turnout of members there were lots of visitors at the meeting and we look forward to see them again during 2020. Monday February 10th 2020: Our speaker for February is Sean McLoughlin who is a master composter. A healthy garden starts with healthy soil so this is an excellent subject to start the season. As well as our usual raffle and produce table the competition for this month is 'a bowl or vase of hellebores'. We meet in the dining room of the Town Hall at 7.30pm. Hidden Gardens Of Hadleigh I was asked to tell you what it was like opening my garden for the first time in the Hidden Gardens scheme. So here it is.....inviting the public in and John McEnroe. Well not exactly, so I’d better get that out of the way first. I started to make a courtyard garden in a completely empty space in July 2017, so when, a few months later in March 2018, I was encouraged to open the garden the words of that great philosopher and peace ambassador John McEnroe came to mind: “You cannot be serious!!” But I got on with it and by early June when people were walking in, it had thankfully filled out a lot. Amazing thing, nature. You really don’t have to do that much. And I enjoyed being part of a scheme generating money to help look after the fabric of one of Hadleigh’s historic buildings and meeting people at the same time. The organisers offered all the support and it couldn’t have been easier. So I signed up for 2019 and am looking forward to 6 June 2020 but this time I think I’ll add tea and homemade cake, some plants for sale, and maybe display some ‘before’ pictures. It’s great fun and I’d encourage anyone to join in. And, by the way, ignore John McEnroe.

Down to Earth ...with Dave Looking out of the window as I write this a beautiful sparrowhawk has just landed on top of our arbour, no doubt looking for his breakfast. No luck today as all the birds have taken fright and flown away just in time. Is it a pest or a pleasure? On balance it must be a pleasure. One that is a pest is leaf spot disease on hellebores, the answer for this is to remove most of the leaves at this time of year, this has the added advantage of showing off the very welcome flowers. Another problem that is more visible now that all the leaves have fallen is apple and pear canker, this shows as an area of diseased or dead bark usually sunk below the surrounding healthy tissue. As soon as any areas of canker are spotted they should be removed by cutting back into healthy wood, all diseased wood should be incinerated or consigned to the dustbin, it pays to thoroughly disinfect any cutting tools. Special wound paints formulated for canker treatment are available but the important thing is to cut out all infected areas of wood. Plum and cherry canker is different and is caused by a bacterium that only affects prunus, these should only be pruned in the summer. We reluctantly decided to remove the ceanothus or Californian lilac growing at the side of the house as it had died, this is generally a short lived shrub so it was not unexpected. Removing it was not an easy job and involved several trips to the tip, the next problem was what to replace it with. We wanted something evergreen with berries and hardy as it is quite an exposed position. After seeking advice from local nurseries we finally decided on some pyracanthus from Perrywoods at Sudbury. They had some quite large pot grown specimens at a resonable price, we bought six plants two red, two orange and two yellow. They were brought home in the morning and planted out in the afternoon. To give them a bit of a boost in their new home I have used some mycorrhizal fungi, this comes in the form of small granules and is spread directly on the roots and in the planting hole, it is designed to rapidly produce roots within a few weeks. If you get a chance have a look at the emerging bulbs at the back of the market place, they should put on quite a show this spring. Hadleigh & District Flower Club Greetings all and a very Happy New Year. Looking back to the December meeting (a little while ago now), we had a fantastic evening with National Demonstrator Gill McGregor. Her theme was “The Splendour of Christmas” and she did not disappoint, her flowers and foliage were delightful. Gill described how her life had always revolved around flowers and it was reflected in the beautiful arrangements she produced. After such a relaxing two hours we were treated to a plate of seasonal goodies, teas and coffee with mince pies whilst enjoying a raffle of flower arrangements and other prizes. Thanks to the HDFC Committee for such a lovely warm up to Christmas. Another happy event was the presentation to Sylvia Hobrough of a Certificate of Congratulations for being a Member of NAFAS for 50 Years, a great achievement. Sylvia has also been a loyal member of Hadleigh Flower Club for many years, having been chair lady and she is still serving on the Committee, always happy to help. Well done Sylvia. Cllr Mick Fraser - Suffolk County Council Babergh District Council – Hadleigh South Civil Parking Enforcement (CPE) At long last! Local councils in Suffolk will take on the responsibility for parking management; this from 6th April 2020. Parking will then be managed by Babergh DC, in a bid to improve parking locally and drive down nuisance and unlawful parking in Hadleigh. The parliamentary order will be laid until 30th January. The change will bring many benefits, including: • Greater priority given to parking management locally, to help keep traffic moving. • Babergh DC will then be empowered to make decisions to suit local circumstances. • Irresponsible and nuisance parking being enforced. • Fines associated with parking will be retained in Suffolk to support the cost of enforcement. Any surplus can be spent on local transport and environmental improvements. Planning – Hadleigh Phase 2 Persimmon has submitted a planning application - DC/19/05419 for 19.6Ha of land to the South of Tower Mill Lane/East of Frog Hall Lane, Hadleigh comprising the following elements: • Proposed residential development of 250 dwellings, associated infrastructure, including main access and estate roads, drainage attenuation ponds, utilities/services equipment, provision of public open space and structural landscaping. • Outline Planning Application to include 5.5Ha of land for employment uses, a 928sqm pre-school site, and associated infrastructure and landscaping. This developer has also indicated its intentions for planning of further development adjacent to this one stated; Phase 3. These will put an additional strain on Hadleigh’s infrastructure, including roads. I will be discussing with planning officers at both councils, that as a condition to these applications, the present Ellen Aldous Way is extended to link up with the Benton Street, before approval is given. This could potentially be a golden opportunity for Hadleigh to gain a much needed eastern relief road, and paid for by the developer. Countywide Children’s Centre Review Suffolk County Council (SCC) has launched a review of its Children’s Centre service with a view to strengthening its current family offer and expanding services for the most vulnerable families and children aged 0-19 across the county. There will be no reduction in service budget as a result of this review. In fact, any savings made through the process, such as existing building costs, will be re-invested back into the 0-19 service to strengthen the current offer to families and to help develop future provision for young people and their families across Suffolk. The consultation will run for seven weeks until 5pm on Sunday 1st March 2020. Details of the process, all supporting information and the consultation questionnaire can be found on the SCC website at www.suffolk.gov.uk/ccconsultation. As part of the consultation, there will be a number of public drop-in events taking place across Suffolk where any families interested in taking part in the consultation can meet members of the service team. Trader jailed for 2 years and 8 months for misleading vulnerable customers On 19th December, Suffolk businessman David Waters received a 32-month custodial sentence. Mr Waters failed to fulfil orders and refused to refund customers in his position as sole director of Anchor Mobility Limited. This company was meant to provide life-improving furniture to vulnerable and elderly people, but instead many customers received no goods, no refunds and poor customer service. One customer paid over £8,000 for two beds, which were never delivered, and no refund was ever received. Layham Parish Council The January meeting of the Parish Council was held after the deadline for copy for the Hadleigh Community News – thus the minutes of that meeting will appear in March. Minutes will appear on the Parish website as usual. Motor accident – Stoke Road A resident of Stoke Road, who is well aware of the speed that some motorists drive on the country roads in our parish, just happened to be nearby when a car and a Land Rover met head on. The car came off worst – luckily there were no injuries. A look at the photograph suggests that at least one of the vehicles was going far too fast. General speeding through the village. The emphasis this month is on Stoke Road, but residents of Upper Street are aware of accidents that have taken place there over the holiday period. Vehicles continue to mount banks of plough into hedges as they fail to navigate bends on this road. Often, there is no serious damage and the driver manages to get away without being seen. The worry in everyone’s mind is what could happen if a pedestrian were to be on the pavement when a driver loses control. The Parish Council is well aware that concern over speeding is the number-one priority in the minds of residents. A working party of three councillors is continuing to work towards a recommendation on what sort of signage would be most effective in trying to reduce the rate at which vehicles are driven through our village. It is frustrating for everyone that it is taking so long but it is important to take time and get the decision right before spending limited resources. The Village Spring Clean Yes – here we are again – time for making our village that little bit better in which to live. Thirty people out for two hours each can make a big difference. The date has not yet been settled – but watch for a Community Email and posters round the village – probably the latter part of February. At the close mulled wine and mince pies were served as everyone stayed on for conversation. If you are interested in folk music, ‘Rosewood’ is the mainstay of Hadleigh Folk Club (photograph above) which meets the first Friday in every month in the Ansell Centre. Layham Events Committee Following a successful first year for the new Layham Events Committee we are now looking forward to 2020. We are a small and friendly team of willing residents – so if you want to be part of the fun please get in touch – there’s often cake involved! Layham Local History Group Our quest for photographs of Layham marriages goes on – persistence is the key word. Just last week I bumped into Richard Crisp in Hadleigh and reminded him that he had been “quite sure” he could find several photographs for us. It turned out that two have been sitting in a drawer in his house for months. Within 24 hours they were in my hands and entered into our collection. Thanks to Janet Edwards (nee Lyddaman) for her help. The photograph is of Sydney Liddaman and his bride Esmerelda Ramplin with Esmerelda’s father Frederick. They were married in Layham Church on 18 April 1938. The acquisition of the last two photographs has taken our total up to 101 out of a possible 185. That is magnificent progress. Thank you to all who have helped to get us this far. It is never too late for you to add to our collection. If your forebears are Layham people please check out members of the family to see if there are photographs in an old box in a cupboard somewhere. Good News from the Village Hall We can finally announce that the Village Hall Committee has been successful in their funding application to Viridor Credit Environmental Company and Babergh District Council to fund the renovation of the entrance and toilet block at the village hall. It is a very competitive fund so being selected is a major achievement. Along with wonderful contributions from our community that additional funding means the work can now go ahead in 2020. The renovation will include new doors; outside security lighting; a new lobby; new disabled / family changing room completed with baby change and child size toilets; new uni-sex toilets and heating throughout. Above all the new area will be WARM. Work is scheduled to begin on 1 April 2020 and the hall will be out of action for approximately 3 weeks while the work is carried out. A huge thank you to Viridor Credits and Babergh District Council for their support. Look out for our new opening – possibly May. Did you lose a garden chair in the recent flooding? Craft Night at Layham Queen Having made wreaths for Christmas a glass painting craft night was organised at The Queens Head by some artisan customers. A small donation is made by participants from these events to the pub charity fund which goes to help good causes in the Parish.

Hadleigh Recorder 2019 JANUARY Unleaded fuel at Lady Lane £1.19.9 p per litre. ‘BE’ an antiques and craft shop at Victoria House, Market Place closes. Angel Court in Angel Street to be demolished, has been empty for awhile. A little snow at the end of the month. FEBRUARY Remarkable spell of very mild weather during the second half of the month. Day long sunshine, cloudless skies but often a frost to start the day. 18 degrees C. The Hadleigh Beauty Hut is at Long Bessells. MARCH A week of very windy weather. The major building development works continues at the former Brett Works site. A woman’s body found in the River Brett on Sunday 24th. At the Corks Lane area. The old milestone located in High Street has been cleaned. Unleaded fuel rises by 2p to £1.22.9 at Lady Lane. APRIL Colder weather with some frosty early mornings. ‘Forget me Not’, care services, moves from the High Street to the Market Place, in the former ‘Be’ premises. Un-leaded fuel rises to £1.25.9p a litre in penny stages. The large yellow tower crane used for the McCarthy Stone development was removed on the 12th. Benton Street is being re-surfaced. Extensions to begin at the Hadleigh Cemetery. The land being exposed is sand. MAY Hadleigh T.C. and Babergh elections held on the 2nd. A former WWII Air-Raid Shelter uncovered in Aldham Road. The 180th Hadleigh Show held at Holbecks Park. A new access route for vehicles being trialed. Pedestrians only along Duke Street. Despite an uncertain forecast it kept dry. The new access vehicular traffic route reportedly worked well. The Kings Head exterior is being re-decorated. Unleaded fuel rises 3p to £1.31.9. The Town Hall is being redecorated. JUNE John Ankers made an MBE at the Queens Birthday Honours. The Kings Head, becomes Battlebury’s at the Kings Head. Fuel reduces to £1.28.9, and a further 1p fall. JULY Ram-raid at Lady Lane Garage offices during the night of the 5th. Much damage caused. Saturday 20th an exhibition held in the parish church: with the launch of an illustrated booklet telling the story of the town during the Second World War. From the 21st, temperatures begin to rise. On the Thursday temperatures reached the mid 30s centigrade. Roadworks along the W side of the High Street cause disruption, traffic lights control traffic, but when the work reached the Angel Street junction, 3-way lights were necessary. AUGUST A large tree (believed a Horse Chestnut?) at the entrance of Benton End has been cut down. Unleaded fuel rises 1p to £1.29.9 a litre, later falls by 1p. Confusion caused as the church clock, begins to strike the hours, on the half hours! SEPTEMBER The parish church south porch doors (15th c) have been repaired and rehung. They were becoming distorted. The large tree between the High Street and the High Street Car Park cut down, one large bough was dead and there was also some other fungus damage. There has been little rain in recent weeks. River levels have fallen. The George P.H. car-park closed, while improvement works are being carried out for an outside eating area. OCTOBER Fuel at Lady Lane garage: £1.27.9p a litre. The Ram PH in the Market Place reopens at the beginning of this month. (it has been closed for a few months). Hadleigh on Show event (5th) held in the Guildhall complex and the parish church. Some 90+ local groups/clubs presented their activities. Large numbers attended and it was deemed to be a great success. Crowds gather to await the official opening at the Guildhall complex of Hadleigh On Show day. Work begins on the new Hadleigh Swimming Pool. Repairs to the vestry roof at St. Mary’s Church commence. A two-day exhibition held in the Guildroom marking 200 years of trading by Partridges, a well-known hardware and iron-mongers store in the town. The autumn colours are once again in full glory. Its been a wet few weeks, some fields water-logged and the River Brett is running high. Further periods of rain cause the River Brett to burst its banks. The Environment Agency issues a Flood Alert for the river. Large puddles on many roads. The Deanery Tower has white lights to each floor windows with additionally blue lights at the top floor. The town is generally well decorated for the festive season. Maggies gifts and cards shop located in the Market Place closes the Saturday before Christmas. The Christmas Day weather was brilliantly sunny. The annual meet of the Foxhounds held at Holbecks as the rain set in, but the event was well attended. Sudbury & District Citizens Advice I’ve seen a new property advertised which I’d like to rent and am thinking about putting a holding deposit down. However, the rent is really cheap should I be worried it’s a scam? You’re right to be cautious if the rent is a lot cheaper than the market rate. Don’t be hurried into paying a deposit before you view the property and look at your tenancy agreement. Viewing the property is important - not least so that you can see if it’s as advertised. If the landlord refuses, or is evasive, take this as a possible warning sign they are not legitimate. Even if you have seen the property, it’s still important to check your tenancy agreement carefully. You should expect your tenancy agreement to give the name and address of the landlord, along with their contact details. Ask for this information to be added if it’s not already included. If no contract is provided, or information on your landlord is missing, this is another red flag that the letting could be a scam. Finally, it’s a good idea to see if the landlord is a member of a professional landlord association or is accredited by the local council. Membership isn’t compulsory, but it will mean they are legitimate and will operate to a minimum standard. Trust your instincts and if in any doubt, don’t part with your money. The Autumn term was busy as ever and our new children are now settled well into their working groups. Pause For Thought Her mother was determined; the small girl more so. The child was completely sure she did want dinner with her Grandmother and became very upset. Although one of her favourite meals was on the table, in the company of some of her favourite people, she was adamant she did would not go. It took a while to understand her thinking through her sobs, but finally, she coherently announced she did not want to eat “stick pie.” It would hurt her mouth and tummy. The mother’s Celtic lilt created “stick” out of “steak.” The girl had both misheard and misunderstood. I wonder if we mishear and misunderstand God? Do we believe He is irrelevant, harsh or incapable? That is if He exists at all? Look around you. The world and our very own existence surely speak of a Creator God. The message of the Bible is that He knows we often make a mess of our lives, but He still loves us so much He gave His own Son to die a vile death on a cross so we could be forgiven, free and know His presence and help in our lives. Don’t allow mishearing and misunderstanding to keep you away from a loving God. It seems so long ago that we were dancing at the Christmas party and welcoming a visit from Santa. It was a sad time saying goodbye to Basia who had been with us for three and a half years and we hope that she has settled well into her new job. There have been lots of new children starting at Playstation this term and we hope that they are all enjoying themselves. All of the children have been busy working on; home from home, senses and winter. We are looking forward to celebrating Chinese New Year and Valentine’s day later in the term. The fundraising focus is still to raise money for an interactive white board and we are getting closer to our £500 target. Thank you to everyone who contributed at Halloween and to those who bought our homemade Christmas gifts. This term we are hosting our annual quiz night on Saturday 21st March at the Royal British Legion. Tickets cost £5/head with up to 6 on a team. A supper will be served during the interval. Dear Sir, On 23rd and 24th December I must admit I was surprised to see people taking photographs of the parking machines in the Magdalen Road car park. Why? Both parking machines were out of order! As a result car drivers, so paranoid about the potential financial penalties which could be heaped upon them by Babergh for failing to display a parking ticket, were photographing the error message to prove that tickets were unavailable. How ironic is that? When less than 100 yards away in the High Street cars were parked dangerously, illegally on double and single yellow lines and longer than the permitted time, all with impunity! When will this ludicrous situation change? Never, I suspect. Those with the power to change it seem too comfortable with blaming others for the lack of progress rather than actively pursuing a solution. Sadly that will only happen when someone is injured and the recriminations begin as to where responsibility lies. Rob Southgate

Dear Sir, Since my article in HCN December 2019 on the tunnel from the old Monastery to St Mary’s Church, I have had local people stop me to confirm its existence. I left out, how I remember, what the tunnel was constructed from and without any prompting in any way - those people confirmed the tunnel they saw was constructed in exactly the same way, two confirmations located in the Queen Street area and one in the Lady Lane / Aldham Road area. You have to remember Hadleigh’s old secrets were passed on by word of mouth to other local people and after my old grandad had passed on to me an old “Hadleigh secret”, always used to add: “Und yew unt find ut writ in any book”. Kersey Mill Newsletter After an incredibly busy Christmas and New Year at Kersey Mill, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a good time to reflect on the success of 2019 as well as all the progress that has been made with the Millâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s restoration. Now the decorations have been removed following the Santas Workshops, we can begin to look forward to continuing work on the fourth phase of this project, which should get underway this month. We will be able to update you in further detail in our next newsletter. With well over 8000 visitors to the Mill itself during 2019, we are planning more Open Days, guided tours and events for 2020. Once again we will be hosting Drive It Day on Sunday 26th April. Planning is already underway to invite the national motor clubs as well as local car enthusiasts to display their vehicles for everyone to enjoy at this very popular family day out. On the subject of visitors, we are also pleased to welcome back the Little Egrets to Kersey Mill. The Little Egret is a small white heron with attractive white plumes on its crest, back and chest, with distinctive black legs, bill and yellow feet. Although once a very rare visitor from the Mediterranean, Little Egrets began to appear in the UK during winter months in significant numbers during the late 1980s around the South West, Welsh and East Anglian coastlines. In the following decades, due to the milder winters we are now experiencing in the UK, further colonies have arrived from western and northern France, and they are even beginning to increase their range further inland and northwards here too. For those of you who enjoy the outdoors, why not pop down to Kersey Mill on the first Wednesday of each month for a Health Walk. Meet in the main car park at the back of the site at 9.20am. The walk starts at 9.30am and lasts for 90 minutes - no booking required, just turn up! Help for those most in need to remain at home Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils have approved a new Housing Assistance Policy to help residents suffering with a long-term illness adapt their homes. The councils approved the introduction of a local grant scheme, called the Minor Adaptations Grant, to offer financial support to enable residents to carry out minor adaptations to their home up to ÂŁ7,500, enabling them to remain live independently and safely in their homes for longer. Works covered within the new scheme include ramps, bathing/washing facilities, additional heating, stairlifts, key safes and wash/dry toilets. The Housing Assistance Policy, forms part of the Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG), and is specifically designed to meet specialist needs not covered by mandatory DFG without the need for applicants to be means tested. Through the scheme the councils will be able to target those most in need, who may currently not be able to live independently at home and allocate resources in a shorter time scale, allowing disabled residents to live in suitable accommodation, enabling them to live as independently as possible. The Minor Adaptations Grant supports anyone with an identified need for adaptations including those â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Living with Dementiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, those suffering with or caring for someone with a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Terminal Illnessâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; or needing â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;End of Lifeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; support, or those needing quick adaptations to their home after a stay in hospital â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Home from Hospitalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. Babergh District Councilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cabinet Member for Housing, Cllr Jan Osborne, said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;What seem like relatively small improvements can have a major impact on someoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s quality of life. Often illness is unplanned and doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t give residents much time to make the necessary arrangements at home. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve made the process for the Minor Adaptions Grant more straightforward, which should help to enable residents to leave hospital and return to the comfort of their own home quicker than they might have been able to previously.â&#x20AC;? The councils are encouraging residents in both districts to come forward to apply for the grants which will cover a range of adaptions including; Installing bathroom fittings, Installation of a key safe, Removing door thresholds, Installing pivot hinges, Widening doors, Installation of additional radiators, Level access showers.

Saving money and the planet with an electric vehicle? Have you noticed something unusual in Maiden Way and Morrison’s car parks? Well, there are two new charging points for electric cars and zero-carbon motoring has now arrived in Hadleigh. Traditionally, electric motors have been associated with domestic appliances and milk floats. But currently the latest models of electric cars are demonstrably up to the job: there is something for everyone with economy models right through to highperformance vehicles. For those with concerns about range, performance and availability of charging points, there are hybrids - petrol cars which optimally combine a petrol engine with an electric motor to achieve real improvements in fuel consumption, reduced emissions and savings at the pumps. If you use renewable energy to recharge your EV at home, you can reduce your greenhouse gas emissions even further. Jack from Complete Car Services in Hadleigh says “I have definitely seen an increase in electric and hybrid vehicles passing through our garage over the last 2 years and all our customers appear to be completely happy with their vehicles” Earlier this year, HEAT member Josh Archer, bought a used Toyota Auris Hybrid to replace his ailing VW Golf. “I’m very pleased with my purchase”, he reports. “It’s easy to drive, with a 1.8 litre petrol engine: engage Power mode and the engine and motor forget all about fuel economy and you really do shift. If you opt for the Eco mode, the car will help you drive more economically and will go electric-only in slow moving urban traffic, engaging the motor alone.” That said, hybrids don’t represent the future: they’ll never deliver zero-carbon motoring as they basically run on petrol. There are other important issues that need to be resolved, such as battery recycling and components made from limited natural resources. The manufacturing of a new vehicle creates as much carbon pollution as driving it, so it's often better to keep your old car running efficiently than replacing it. If you make a car last to 200,000 miles rather than 100,000, the emissions for each mile the car does in its lifetime may drop by as much as 50%. However, if you do very high mileage or have a real gas-guzzler and are in the market for replacing your motor vehicle anytime soon, we urge you to consider the hybrid or all electric vehicles currently available. They are part of the solution that is available right now. Library Life: Connections I have often thought that it would be fun if we could see all the journeys our books made around the county. Take, for instance, a book that has been reserved: a librarian finds the book in the library it calls home, it is processed and then packed into a crate with all the others heading off that day. It has a little road trip to a central unit where all the books say goodbye to one another and are re-sorted into more crates with other titles all heading to the same place. On its arrival it is processed again and placed on a hold shelf waiting to be picked up. (Some poor titles get forgotten and wait around never being claimed until it is time for them to make the reverse journey home without ever having been read, watched or listened to. Don’t forget your reservations - they wait very patiently for you.) On a slightly less frivolous note though, we often speak of our libraries as part of our communities in which we are placed - which we are, but we are also part of something much bigger. With over 44 libraries and services throughout Suffolk, I think it is fair to say that we connect with the whole of our county. Librarians will go out of their way to help other librarians - and everything we do, ultimately, is for the people in Suffolk; whether sending your books whizzing between us and then on to you, or with the events, information and support we provide. And you are part of all that too. Local artist, Stuart Morris collaborates with the Chairman of Suffolk County Council, Councillor James Finch to support his nominated charity, Suffolk Mind In Hadleigh one of the best kept secrets is the work of the artist, Stuart Morris who has recently been persuaded to show his work at an exhibition of art at Suffolk County Council’s Endeavour House, in Ipswich. Stuart who lives and has a studio in Hadleigh is a successful artist in the commercial world. Although his work is not always available to view to the public he sells to private and commercial buyers. Stuart was invited by Council Chairman, Cllr James Finch to exhibit some of his striking artwork at the council’s headquarters as part of the Chairman’s fundraising efforts for his nominated charity, Suffolk Mind. Stuart donated a canvas as a raffle prize which raised £500 for James’s nominated charity. Endeavour House with its vast atrium provides a perfect backdrop to Stuarts paintings which are often huge and dramatic in style. His work appears colossal because of its dimensions and combined with the maelstrom of colour; it is awe inspiring. This exhibition sees canvases and paintings that are spectacular, prismatic, vibrant and vivid. They are amazingly atmospheric and can only be described as “heroic” in scale. The work is powerful, and the impact creates an incredible, spiritual sense of well-being and warmth with the most amazing turbulence of colour and image. Canvases are magnificent, captivating and totally bewitching. The work is rooted in nature and developed from a basic, fundamental connection with the patterns, cycles and rhythms of the natural world which were once instinctive in primitive man. Stuart has in the past exhibited in Bonn, Cologne, Edinburgh and London and has been featured on television. He says of his style “I like to combine contrasting forms; decoration with plain colour, the media of paint and photography, abstract and symbolic images to create landscapes simultaneously rooted in the actual places I’ve visited, but translated into the imaginary, alive with primitive references.” If you missed the exhibition, then it is expected that Stuart will be showing a further collection of his work later in the year.

Eavesdropping can be very confusing. I thought the volunteers were celebrating having perfect eyesight when they were talking about seeing in 20 20 last month. Mum explained this year marks the start of a new decade which inspires many resolutions like getting fit - as she eyed my bulging tummy! How did we manage before disposable plastics entered the world? We wrapped food in paper, put it in cans, jars, glass and ceramic dishes. We used wooden bowls, spoons and spatulas and the average 2 parent, 3 child household only filled their waste bin once a month, if that! We can achieve the same in 2020, we just need to learn from the past. Over the course of 2020 Orchard Barn will be offering free workshops designed to learn from the past and teach us skills to live a less wasteful life, all with the opportunity for further learning and volunteering. Our first workshop will be held on Thursday 13th Feb and will be focussed on making our own tool covers, this workshop will be followed by our ‘Love Wood’ open day on Saturday 15th, where visitors will have the opportunity to get a taste of what’s to come over the rest of the year. On the 19th March you can learn the right tools skills to create your own spatula or chopsticks and go home with a new addition to your kitchen along with a sense of satisfaction and new skills that you can use in your free time, on other workshops at Orchard barn or when volunteering with us. November and December were very busy! We celebrated with lots of seasonal activities, In December we had a Christmas lunch and party and as a special treat ‘Little City’ and the Mayor came to visit along with Father Christmas. During December we visited Waterfield and Hadleigh Hall Residential homes – such a positive thing for the different generations to interact and learn from each other. We have been on nature walks and visits to the shops and Market. We even got to meet Radio Suffolk (and Santa) and sing a Christmas song live on the radio; we also participated in the Hadleigh Lighting Up ceremony with our little stall in the Guildhall. The new term sees several new children starting at Pre-School – we are now full most (mornings) – Please contact us if you would like your child to have a visit with us – we may have more spaces in the morning after Easter – We cater for children aged 18months – 5 years, we are open 8.00a.m. – 6.00p.m. We also offer Holiday clubs (2-6 years We have welcomed a new staff member to our team, Basia who has many years’ experience in the childcare sector, Rhiannon will also coming back after Easter, following Maternity leave. Our new term sees us having a big change round of furniture and resources to reflect lots of little ones in the Pre-School, we will be celebrating Chinese New Year, Valentine’s Day and World Book Day (Thursday 5th March) promoting reading stories and dressing up as our favourite character from a book. Monks Eleigh History Group On 6 January, in a change to the advertised programme, due to unforeseen circumstances, we were delighted to welcome Richard Gates who stepped in at short notice to speak about “Hendon Aerodrome,” Richard’s grandfather was general manager of the facility between 1910 and 1914 and it was especially interesting to see the many of his photographs of the early years of British aviation. Our next meeting will be on Monday 3 February when local author and historian, Ray Whitehand, will now present his talk “At The Overseer’s Door,” about the workhouses which were run by many parishes between 1570 and 1834. The group meets at Monks Eleigh Village Hall on the first Monday of each month from October to March, talks commence at 7.30pm. New members and visitors are welcome, seasonal membership costs £9.00, attendance at individual sessions is £3.00. East Anglia Potato Day 2020 25th Anniversary Year Saturday 8th February at Stonham Barns, Stonham Aspal IP14 6AT Potato Day is a gardening event with all our customers and volunteers being gardeners who grow spuds, be it on an allotment, smallholding, garden or in pots on the patio. As well as 80+ varieties of seed potato available to buy per tuber (majority 18p), we also have onion sets and various stall-holders including Rougham Nurseries, Kings Seeds, Chip-tasting, seed-swap, second hand tools, Master-composters, Hodmedods, Stowmarket bee-keepers, NSALG, bird-box making with Ipswich Wildlife Group who also have beanpoles and pea-sticks for sale. Previous visitors over the years will remember a very cold barn with canvas walls and a clinker floor but recent building works have transformed the barn into a solid building that has doubled in size and we now have the luxury of heating, carpeted floor and, most important, indoor toilets - and plenty of room for visitors to enjoy a cup of tea and cake. Potato Day is a joint venture by members of 3 organic gardening groups, Suffolk Organic Gardeners, Norfolk Organic Group and Ipswich Organic Gardeners Group. As it is our 25th year, Bob Flowerdew, who is President of the Norfolk Group, will be opening the event this year. At the halfway stage of the season both Hadleigh teams have performed reasonably well. Division 1 side, Hadleigh “A”, have won 4 games, drew 2 and lost 2, leaving them well clear of any relegation worries. They are currently placed 5th from 10 teams. Mike Emmerson is leading the way in the “averages” having won 18 of his 24 singles including 11 wins from 12 in his last four matches. Further good progress from the side will help them stay in the top half up to the end of the current season. The “Owls” in Division 3 have made similar progress and currently lie mid-table with 4 wins ,1 draw and 4 defeats. Team Secretary, Rupert Pyett, has had a sparkling run placing him in the top “averages” winning 15 from 18 played, and remaining unbeaten in his last three games. Dean Abbott has also struck form winning 10 from 15. Recently joined is new player, Paul Roman, who will be having his first taste of League action in the second half. In the League Handicap Cup both teams were beaten in second round matches. The “Owls” lost narrowly away to Britannia Cormorants with only a few points separating the sides. The “A” Team came up against the leading team is Division 3, Ipswich Sports Club “B”, and were well beaten finding the handicap system acting rather unfairly against them.

Hadleigh Cycling On Show 28th March All cyclists - would be or has been, fanatical or fair weather, lycra-clad or trouser-in-socks, veteran or junior – are invited to the Hadleigh Cycling on Show event on 28th March at the Ansell Centre. The event is entirely free and the aim is to encourage as many people to get out on bikes this year. We will be offering bike checks and advice on how to get around town or travel further afield. We will demonstrate the latest electric bikes and show you how to repair a puncture. There will be a chance to enrol for the Junior Club or find out about our social rides. Individual membership is £12.50. As an extra incentive to join this year, the Club has set aside £1000 to support activities which promote cycling in the town and enhance the experiences of individual members (or groups) wishing to participate in cycling-related endeavours. In the meantime, why not try our Sunday morning social rides from the George starting at 9am, weather permitting. Adults and “capable children accompanied by an adult” are all welcome. Hadleigh Hares Suffolk Cross Country Championships The Suffolk Cross Country Championships were held in early January at Culford School near Bury St Edmunds. First up was Daniel Cooper in the under 13 boys category, Daniel ran very well and battled right to end in a competitive race. Next to run were the Senior Women. Alice Heather Hayes finished in the top ten and won County Gold (V40 category) Rachel Bodsworth continued her return to form to finish 31st and Sam Cooper ran incredibly well to win a County bronze medal (V50). In the men’s race Scott Ramsey booked his place in the Suffolk squad finishing in an excellent 3rd place overall. There were County medals for John Scaife (V45 Silver) and Mat Blacoe (V50 Bronze) who, together with John Jousiffe and Steve Hunt finished in a very respectable 5th place overall in the County team event. Springfield Cross Country We had a good turnout for the Springfield Cross Country event which is the third of 6 events in our league. 3 juniors ran very well Thomas Davis, Ella Bodsworth & Elena Cooke. Our ladies team continued to do well finishing in 4th place overall helped by a fantastic 1st place for Laura Hubbard. Snetterton 10k A large group of Hadleigh Hares completed the Snetterton 10k which is held on the race track. The flat/fast course provided a good opportunity of PB’s for Dean Wright, Kevin Scutcher, Amy Plumbly and Samantha Tapp. Scott Ramsey came in 1st position overall in a great time of 33.00 mins despite being sent the wrong way at one point! And Laura Hubbard was second overall female.

Hadleigh United Football Club First Team Round Up Our mixed season of results has continued we sees us at time of writing these notes rooted to the bottom of the table following on from our victory at home over Walsham on Dec 7th a trip to Wroxham a week later saw us returned empty handed as we lost 4-0 to one of the better teams in the league Our last match before Xmas home to Newmarket was postponed due to a rather waterlogged pitch, but we were able to put the match against Brantham on the following Saturday, some wish we had not as we lost 2-0. Our first match of the New Year saw a long trip to Godmanchester should really have been called ‘Godmudchester’ due the somewhat rather muddy pitch which did not allow good passing football however we did grind out a 1-1 draw courtesy of Joel Glover, before Joel scored in our next match at home to Mildenhall his goal not enough to see us go down fighting in a 2-1 defeat.
