very grassroots footballer dreams about playing for their boyhood club. For most of us that dream is but a distant memory and the love of the game is enough to keep us playing week in week out. Grassroots Magazine was delighted to have had the recent opportunity to chat to West Ham youngster James Tomkins on fulfilling his dream, and how he owes his recent rise to a supportive family and grassroots football. See page 12 for the interview. Congratulations TO DUTCH Football Club

Dutch FC who play in Chelmsford Sunday league division one completed a remarkable cup treble recently by adding the Essex Junior Cup to their impressive trophy cabinet. Having romped Invitation division three last season, manager Rob Small and his team have found the step up to the Pope and Smith sponsored league a challenge. This has not deterred the boys in cup competitions however, with the team winning the division one league cup and the Coward Cup. A huge well done to Rob and his team in what is Rob’s swan song season with the Dutch. See our Essex FA feature on page 10 for the match report of their latest cup success. Player manager Luke perry in recent sunday league action against Slavia FC

S

unday league newcomers Gloucester are having a dream season. In their debut year the boys from Moulsham are gunning for promotion and confidence is high at the close of the season. With crunch time approaching, we caught up with the Eagles for their take on their rapid rise. GR Where do your team originate from? GE The club was established by Luke and Ben Perry in the Summer of 2010. We all frequent the Eagle and Hind pub in Moulsham Lodge, so the banter between the lads is good and continues off the field. GR Who has the responsibility as manager and how long have they held the post? GE Luke Perry is the club’s player-manager and he is in his first season.

CLUB PROFILE Gloucester eagles

GRASSROOTS

Kevin Fay

GR Who would you say are your key players, and what qualities do they bring to the team? GE It’s a bit of a cliché but every player has played his part this season. Our goalie Tom Giddings is in his first season between the sticks and has pulled off some quality saves to give us something to build on. Ladi Benson is our key striker with 15 goals so far this season. Captain Rob Wotton is very influential and continues to put in good performances (when he hasn’t been on the booze the night before!) Dan Booty also deserves praise as his versatility is vital for the team. »

GR Football, and grassroots football in particular is famous for its off the field banter – are there real characters in the dressing room? GE I’d say the main prankster in the squad is Laurent Kelsey. He consistently winds everyone up. No one actually likes him, we just feel sorry for him most of the time! GR With the season drawing to a close, what are your goals for the remaining fixtures? GE We’re sitting in a great position in the league so promotion is a realistic aim for the run in. To make the Premier division would be a great achievement. GR What are the clubs long-term ambitions? GE We have got a second team lined up for next season so we’re looking to expand. Building Gloucester Eagles Football Club is important to everyone involved. GR Is there anyone behind the scenes who deserve a special mention for their support? GE Benny the Chairman, without doubt. He helps out with all the relevant paperwork (which no one envies) and he also sorts out food for the boys after every game. The Eagle & Hind pub deserves a mention too for paying for our kit and being the club’s sponsor in our first season. GR Grassroots Magazine is now in its 20th issue and with the website we’re covering the main leagues in Essex. What are your opinions of the magazine to date? GE It’s a good magazine and very handy to be able keep up to date with what’s going on in our division and leagues across the county. l Grassroots Magazine would like to wish Gloucester Eagles a successful conclusion to the season. hroughout this regular feature, Chris publicises the positive news relating to grassroots football. With case studies collated from essexfa.com and other publications such as the County’s biannual magazine. He also liaises with the media to ensure all facets of the local game receive the coverage they deserve.

Abbey Youth Old Boys 2-5 Dutch Essex Sunday Junior Cup Final supported by Time 107.5 FM.

Lee Perry scored a hat-trick as Robert Small signed off in style as manager of Dutch with a 5-2 Sunday Junior Cup Final triumph over Abbey Youth Old Boys before revealing: “It feels very, very good. It’s massive for the club; this was our last chance.” Dutch fought back from going a goal behind inside two minutes to pick up the silverware in just their third season thanks chiefly to Perry’s trio. “We won’t get any second chances,” Small

continued, referencing his own imminent departure. “I told the team that in the dressing room. We would never get the opportunity to make up for losing, so we gave it everything we had.” His side made the worst possible start as Ian Brownjohn headed Abbey in front. The tall centre forward had already nodded one corner kick over before rising to meet Joe Hagger’s second quadrant-based delivery and nod the ball into the bottom left-hand corner. “The start was a bit of a wobble,” Small conceded. “I said beforehand that they would be dangerous from set pieces and, from their second corner we’ve gifted them a free header, but the players reacted perfectly. We know we’ve got a good side, and conceding in the first minute is better than letting one in in the last.” Dave Browne almost responded immediately as he headed narrowly wide, whilst Ross Adams saw a further effort deflected wide before Small pulled

out an excellent save to turn away George King’s snapshot at the other end. That gave Perry the opportunity to equalise midway through the opening half. Browne’s shot was parried out by Chris Harper in the Abbey goal, and Perry got a deft headed touch to Taylor Lang’s corner to make it 1-1. Perry then saw a strong long-range effort with the outside of his left foot take a touch off of a defender before going over, whilst Harper made an excellent save to push Adams’ header over. However, Dutch did move ahead three minutes before half time as Dean Harper was adjudged to have pushed Scott Pethers to the ground, and Perry stepped up to convert the spot kick. Rather than that strike, Small claimed that it was Chris Lewis’ header from another Lang flag kick two minutes after the break that proved to be the pivotal moment: “The goal just after half time was the most important one because we knew in the first 10-15 minutes of the second half they’d come at us. The third goal stifled them.” Unfortunately for the Old Boys, many of whom are alumni of Abbey Youth FC, they were reduced to nine men after a five-minute period in which both Hagger and Chris Ambrose were dismissed.

Dutch FC were also successful in the Division One League Cup final encounter versus Ongar United. See page 21 for match action.

Despite that setback, they were swiftly handed a route back into the game when Jono Olejnik angled a shot across Small. “At 3-1 we knew they’d still be a threat at set pieces, but again I got an instant reaction at 3-2,” added Small. That reaction saw Adams restore the two-goal advantage within 60 seconds of Olejnik’s 77th minute strike as he slotted home when Pether’s fierce effort was blocked before Perry added a fifth before the 80-minute mark, converting Paul Lewis’ right-wing centre. “I think that was Lee’s first hat-trick in three years. His all-round performance was excellent,” said Small. “It’s been a target to win the County Cup – in our first year we were unlucky in the quarterfinal then we were defeated in the semifinals last year. It’s the perfect way for me to end my association with the club. I’m delighted.” Abbey Youth Old Boys: Chris Harper, Dean Harper (Gary Brownjohn, 77), Chris Ambrose, Tom Scriven, Matty Attard, Joe Hagger, George King, Ian Brownjohn, Jono Olejnik, Rod Andrews (Matt King, 85), Billy Brownjohn. Health, FITNESS & style the 15 minute leg circuit

T Robert Fielder Grassroots Fitness Advisor

his circuit of leg exercises are geared towards strength development and also injury prevention, work your gluts, quads, and hamstrings. Do it twice a week, but leave two days rest before a game. Take no rest between each exercise and perform the circuit three times, resting 90 seconds between each exercise. Warm up for five minutes on a bike or cross trainer, then begin. All three count as one circuit, complete three circuits within 15 minutes. Ignore trying to hit a high speed, form is certainly key!

Squats Reps: 6

First, place two small plates under your heels. This reduces the pressure on your patellar tendon (heavily stressed during a football match), and also helps to isolate your quads. With a barbell resting on your upper back, squat down over four seconds until your posterior is level with your knees, then lift quickly over one

10

second. Complete six consecutive reps without rest. Then go straight on to the next exercise. Squats are critical for building pure lower limb strength and keeping you injury-free when the crunching tackles start flying in. Walking lunges Reps: 12 each leg

Find some space in your gym and lunge continuously forward to complete twelve reps with each leg, holding two dumb-bells at your sides. Keep your spine straight, take Ministry of Funny Walks-worthy giant strides, and make sure your trailing knee finishes level with your trailing ankle at the bottom of the rep before driving upwards explosively. Aim for two seconds of lowering into the lunge and one second bursting out of it and into the next rep. Footballers are constantly accelerating and jumping off a single leg throughout a game. Walking lunges will improve your explosive speed, which translates to everything from

more effective dashes down the wing to higher leaps when defending corners. Dumb-bell squats Reps: 25

Holding two dumb-bells at your side and once again elevating your heels with two plates, complete 25 consecutive squats. Concentrate on maintaining a speedy tempo: aim to take no more than a second down to the bottom position and rise equally quickly. “Ideally, the lowest point of the movement should find your posterior just below parallel with your knees, says Miller. Where the bar-bell squats built pure leg strength, these will boost your endurance, providing the muscle stamina needed for that match-winning injury-time dash into the penalty box. l For past issues including more health and fitness & style tips, please visit our website: www.grassrootsmag.co.uk/archive

Premiership football James Tomkins

It’s every footy fans dream to play for their boyhood club. Having broken into the West Ham first team in Recent seasons, James Tomkins is doing just that.

T

omka, as he is affectionately known to West Ham supporters could be considered as somewhat of a rarity in modern football. With glitz and glamour overshadowing ability in a lot of today’s young talent, James’ feet are firmly on the ground as he evolves in a game he loves. Despite a disappointing season for the Hammers, James has seen plenty of playing time and is showing the potential that saw him break into the West Ham first team in recent years. Born in Basildon, James is no stranger to football in Essex, and we spoke to James about his career highlights so far and his gratitude to a good upbringing.

Before joining West Ham Academy where did you play your football at Grassroots level?

Before West Ham I joined a local team with one of my mates in Basildon called Holy Cross. I was only there for a couple of seasons before moving to Redbridge FC which isn’t far from West Ham’s training ground in Chadwell Heath. I quickly got spotted by West Ham and only played a few games before joining the Hammers full time.

12

www.grassrootsmag.co.uk

Did you have any specialised coaching before joining West Ham?

No not really. As a young lad I obviously played a lot of football around that time both at school and on a Sunday. After joining West Ham I only trained with them a couple of times a week so I could continue to enjoy playing on a Sunday. When I got to around nine years old that was when I started dedicating myself to West Ham so I didn’t have time for a Sunday League club. How old were you when you joined West Ham?

I joined when I was eight years old and I’ve been there ever since, representing the nines and tens, all the way up through the youth, under 18’s and reserve team until I was fortunate enough to break through to the first team. There’s a lot of boys out there that have that same dream, but your living it…

It was always my dream as a kid to play for the first team. I’ve managed to achieve that goal I keep reminding myself as a young player that I’ve got to keep that dedication going to enjoy a good career in the game. »

Premiership football James Tomkins

Have you been a Hammer all your life?

West Ham is my local team. When I was growing up it was definitely the club I supported. Being local to me I watched them a couple of times so it’s obviously nice to play for them today. These days there is a lot of pressure put on players playing at the top level. Do pro clubs prepare you for this at an early age?

Obviously when you’re going up there’s always pressures in that there are a lot of players that come and go. It’s whether you’re both committed and dedicated enough to succeed. Your social life has to take a back seat and your friends get to do stuff you’re not able to do. Making sacrifices is part of any young player’s life and you have to put the work in. I believe that West Ham have always been fortunate that they have a good coaching setup to help prepare youngsters when making the step up. How did you cope seeing your close school mates going out and enjoying themselves whilst you had to be disciplined to give you the best possible chance of turning pro?

Yes, course it was difficult. People around you play a big part. I had a good family to keep me in check and be the first to remind me when I stepped out of line. I’ve always been quite level headed and knuckled down which is lucky. I didn’t really get involved in all the stuff you do as a teenager. I moved away from my school when I was young so didn’t really have too many mates around where I lived so that helped. I am fortunate to have a supportive family and have always been close to my brothers.

James’ debut goal for the Hammers was a 53rd minute header against Sunderland in April 2009

Who were the people you looked up to when you first started out in the game?

When I first started out for West Ham Rio was a big player. Coming through the academy, players like Di Canio and Tevez when they were

14

www.grassrootsmag.co.uk

here were an inspiration. Technically gifted players are great to watch and you looked at them at training and thought ‘wow’. There have been a lot of great players at West Ham that have come and gone, and there are certainly lots of players that are coming through the ranks now.

Do you still have much involvement in the Grassroots game?

I still see the people that I used to play with as a kid and it’s good to not forget where you came from. My little brother plays for a team in Benfleet and I try to watch him as often as I can. I haven’t been able to much this year as it’s been a tough season but I still try to get there when I can to cheer him on.

Was there anyone in particular that helped you develop your game?

Family support as I mentioned was important. Without my family I wouldn’t have been able to get to training. They’re massive to me and I wouldn’t be where I am to be honest. There are a lot of good coaches that have helped including Tony Carr at the youth academy and the other coaches including Kevin Keen.

I had a good family to keep me in check and be the first to remind me when I stepped out of line. I am fortunate to have a supportive family. James on family support whilst growing up

Early on at West Ham you were loaned to Derby County. Is it hard moving to a club short term?

Yes it can be. Obviously you don’t know any of the players and it takes a while to get to know how the team play. I think it helps with good people around you and there are plenty at Derby – it’s a big club. I was only there for a month and it helped me massively in terms of experience and the physicality of the Championship. I think you have to adapt quickly in today’s game, and the players who struggle always get found out.

What are your career highs and lows so far?

This year there have been a lot of ups and downs. We had great runs in both the FA Cup and Carling Cups and they have been highlights. Making my debut was a massive thing playing against Everton in my first game. I just enjoy playing and every day is a highlight. All players have their bad games and I am no exception. Hopefully you can use those experiences in your career. Who have been the most difficult players you have faced?

Different players have different attributes that you have to deal with. Torres and Tevez are difficult to mark and then you get the tall physical players. I think different strikers have different qualities. No one stands out in particular you just try to get the better of them.

Having played over 50 times for West Ham so far, what has been your favourite match?

Scoring against Sunderland was a big thing. To score was great and we won the game 2-0. That season we were doing well as a club finishing in the top ten. As well as being a good game personally, Junior Stanislas got our other goal which made it even more special. l Grassroots Magazine would like to thank James for taking the time to talk to us and we wish him all the best in his career. Good luck James.

Olympian league Match highlights

Its been another successful season for the League in the County Cups with Frenford Senior beating Runwell Hospital 1-0 in the Essex Premier Cup final and Kelvedon Hatch Reserves winning a thrilling Essex Junior Cup final on penalties against Braintree & Bocking.

Harold Wood Athletic have taken the Reserve Division One title for the fourth time in five seasons but Rayleigh Town are not certain of the runners up position as Kelvedon Hatch are in third place just four points behind and with three matches in hand.

The Premier Division looks like going right down to the wire with Kelvedon Hatch and Frenford Senior both on 48 points from 20 matches and Harold Wood Athletic just four points behind with two games in hand,

Mountnessing and Hutton top Reserve Division Two but Mountnessing need four points from their last two matches to guarantee the top position.

Senior Division One is also a tight affair with four clubs vying for the promotion places. Hutton have five games left and lead by one point from Hannakins Farm who have three to play. Runwell Hospital are in fourth place seven points behind the leaders and with six matches still to play. They are just one point behind Sandon Royals who have played 20 games. Wadham Lodge are promoted as champions from Senior Division Two and Herongate Athletic need two points from three games to go up with them. Whilst Springfield have gained promotion, they need to win their last match at Bowers & Pitsea to overtake leaders Castle United and go up as champions.

Footy Matters highlights Street League’s life-changing work

Street League is the latest initiative to be highlighted by Footy Matters for their outstanding Community work. The pioneering charity – based at three centres across the UK – uses football to help disadvantaged young people escape social problems and develop confidence, skills and social networks. Nick Smith, head of funding for Street League, told Footy Matters that more than 22,000 troubled lives had been improved by the charity’s work. “We work with a significant range of groups including offenders, substance users, homeless people and those with educational needs, and often participants have multiple disadvantages,” he said. In the article, Nick also discusses the techniques and methods used by Street League in helping 16 to 25-year-olds find their feet and the central role that football plays in fostering participants’ enthusiasm. England boss Fabio Capello, Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas and England Women’s coach Hope Powell have already thrown their weight behind the scheme and the FA named it an official charity partner for 2010. Street League follows in the footsteps of Afrikit, the Football Foundation and the Zesh Rehman Foundation in being featured in Footy Matters’ Community Matters section. Andrew Fitchett, Footy Matters editor, said the scheme was exactly the kind of philanthropic venture that the website’s Community Matters drive was all about. “Community Matters has been set up to highlight the way that so many selfless individuals use the power of football for beneficial change. As soon as we became aware of Street League and spoke to Nick, it was clear that it was an initiative that chimed perfectly with our vision of what football can do for people,” he said. FINAL WHISTLE PAUL SMITH

FINAL WHISTLE The official’s side of the story, from grassroots referee Paul smith

W

e are approaching the end of another season that once again has flown by! Blighted by the weather over the winter, games are still being played into midMay. Congratulations to those teams that have picked up silverware this season, and commiserations to those whole fell at the final hurdle or suffered relegation. It has been a strange season in particular and I have dealt with many strange and unusual situations this year. One of the saddest and certainly most disturbing was a double leg break and dislocation during a match between Fyfield and Little Baddow which resulted in my first ever abandonment due to the severity of the injury. On occasions such as this the phrase ‘it’s only a game’ becomes even more evident. The player concerned was Chris Warwick and he has since had two operations on the injured leg. Thankfully he is now making a good recovery, although he has decided to call it a day on playing grassroots football. I have also been asked, or rather told to tell people to stop smoking illegal substances on the touchline as the smell was making the player concerned to lose concentration – the excuses you players come up with trying to excuse a bad performance! As par for the course I have been called a few names, had decisions challenged and have forever been told that decisions I have awarded have been incorrect. I have managed a laughed with you all, shared in your good and bad times and as a rule generally enjoyed myself. As a referee’s appointments secretary I get to hear when my performances are scrutinised, taken to bits and it is sometimes funny. 36

Unfortunately, we never really here the good things such as ‘good advantage ref’ too often!

As a referee’s appointments secretary I get to hear when my performances are scrutinised, and its sometimes funny. So as the season draws to a close you may be wondering why do we do it at all? For the love of the game, like all of us! The most important thing to remember is it is just a game (believe it or not). Off the pitch the officials are decent people like yourselves, so please don’t judge us just because we wear black and you disagree with our verdicts. I personally love it and look forward to locking horns with you all once more next season! At this time it would be customary to congratulate fellow referees for winning various awards regrettably as there are still a few outstanding matches to be played, the outcome of these is yet to be decided. On that note may I point out to you all to the Grassroots Presentation night on Friday 10th June. A number of leagues have booked slots for their presentations, and to the others who have not as yet please support the event, it is for a great cause – ’The Essex FA Benevolent fund’. I look forward to a few of you buying me a beer on the night! Enjoy the summer people, but before you know it we will all be back again. Thanks for of all your support throughout the season. Enjoy your football, Smithy l

lenn Pennyfather has had enough of playoffs – its official! Chelmsford City’s Manager knows as much as anyone that for all the club’s strengths, the Clarets’ historical record in playoff scenarios is dreadful, drawing two and losing six of eight matches! However, since City’s season was officially ended at Ebbsfleet United on 8th May he’s been back on the phone seeking the players to help City finish top next time. Make no mistake, other than the final two games this has been a very successful season on and off the field for City, getting to the Second Round Proper of the FA Cup with all it’s financial and publicity benefits whilst still finishing fourth in the Blue Square Bet South against adversity and opening a new covered terrace behind one goal. But now the gloves are off and Glenn is determined to finish as champions in 2011/12. He said: “It’s important to put this setback behind us and look forward. We should be proud of what we’ve achieved I’ll be looking to get players in who’ll help us try and win it next season as I’m tired of these playoffs. We’ve got the nucleus of a good squad and, with additions, we’ll go again.” Back on 2nd April City’s involvement in the playoffs wasn’t even secure as they headed for a tricky away game at Havant & Waterlooville but the supporters returned home relieved after a super 2-1 win. Wayne Gray and Captain David Rainford grabbed the all-important goals at Westleigh Park to maintained Chelmsford’s playoff position.

Defender Ben Nunn swept the board at City’s 2010/11 awards held in early may

With competition for the playoffs as fierce as ever, City boosted their chances with a 3-1 home victory over Staines Town a week later. Ricky Modeste, Ali Chaaban against his old club and a Rainford penalty won the points after Marc Charles-Smith had put the visitors in front in the first half. There was a setback on the 16th when second-placed Farnborough left Melbourne with a 1-0 win. That meant City had to rely on others to slip-up, with a tough game at Ebbsfleet around the corner on Good Friday. Thankfully, Glenn’s men pulled off one of their best performances of the season to return with a 3-1 triumph. He thanked the club’s “magnificent” fans as they helped cheer the visitors to victory after Rob Edmans, Mark Haines and Chaaban strikes. Two games remained and it became clear City would need two wins for a top five berth. They negotiated part one on Bank Holiday Monday with a 2-0 success against Bromley. A Gray penalty and a header from Adam Tann earned the points jumping City up two places as Dover Athletic and Welling United faltered. Now they knew a victory in their last home game would guarantee fourth spot. The

trouble was that game was against Hampton & Richmond Borough – City’s perennial bogey team. There were moments of sheer tension, none less than when Hampton halved the cushion Chelmsford had built, but City booked themselves a two-legged playoff semi-final against Ebbsfleet after Gray’s double and a late clincher from John Martin ensured the Clarets’ made it through. That night’s Player of the Year Disco saw Ben Nunn claim the silverware but there was little chance for sentiment as it was back to work for the home leg on Tuesday. The less said about that the better, but essentially City would have to recover from a three-goal deficit in Sunday’s second leg at Stonebridge Road as a brace in each half from Michael West and Ricky Shakes meant Modeste’s reply was a mere consolation. 1-4. City supporters always turn-up numbers away from home and that was still the case that weekend, regardless of it feeling like a thankless task. City lost that game as well, 2-1 on the day and 6-2 on aggregate with Gray converting for the Clarets, leaving Glenn to plan for next season’s assault. He refused to dwell too much on the defeats, he summarised: “Inevitably changes have to be made if we want to progress and have to be brutally honest that this season, as players and staff, we’ve fallen short. Now this is the busiest time for a manager as you’re always on the phone to players. There are lots of them available and we have to make sure we bring the right ones to our club.” l CCFC Many MINDS, ONE HEART
