“ A good saddle is so important for the support

and comfort for the horse and rider, The ‘Hayley WG’ Dressage saddle delivers this while allowing the maximum freedom of movement”

This beautiful saddle has been designed in conjunction with International Grand Prix rider Hayley Watson-Greaves to meet the needs of serious dressage riders. Developed to have a deep, but unrestricting seat to aid the rider’s communication with the horse. The tree has a more open head than many modern dressage saddles and slightly rearward point position to allow free movement of the horses shoulders without trapping the trapezius muscle, which in turn allows the horse to ‘lift’ under the rider. This saddle is fitted with a shock absorbent neoprene lined panel and a super soft seat as standard providing top class comfort for both horse & rider. Available in only high quality materials, this saddle is a must have for the astute dressage rider.

Nature sends fleas fleeing!

Bug off! WildWash is fighting pests the natural way with an award-winning product

T

here’s an unfortunate downside to the lovely light evenings of summer and walks in the beautiful green countryside – flea season is under way! Thankfully, WildWash is here to help, with an exciting new product to send fleas fleeing and safely protect our horses from the onslaught. WildWash’s new flea-repellent spray was only recently launched at this year’s Crufts, but is already being recognised for its innovation in the sector and great ecocredentials. The WildWash Pro Flea and Bug Repellent was a New Product Showcase Award winner at pet trade event PATS Sandown earlier this year, deemed the very best in the Pet Care Product category. The judges at PATS were impressed with the thought and development that went into creating the spray; it represents a year of work for WildWash, sourcing natural and ethical ingredients from around the world, selected as the most effective insectrepelling botanicals in their country of origin. The results are brilliant. The WildWash Pro Flea and Bug Repellent uses a blend of essential oils hailed for their flea-repellent properties, which also deter flies, ticks, mosquitos and other pesky parasites. The careful, caring combination of horsetail, eucalyptus and nettle can be applied freely and liberally and is suitable

for use on both horses and dogs. It even helps to condition and brighten the coat for a glossy shine – bonus! The spray is a powerful solution to a problem that rears its head every year, giving pet owners the choice to not use harsh chemicals. Jane Cooper, co-founder of WildWash, says: “Last year was one of the worst years we have had in the grooming industry for fleas and ticks; all the products we develop are to satisfy a genuine need in the market.

“When we launched the WildWash Pro Flea and Bug Repellent at Crufts, we had queues of people for four solid days! We brought boxes and boxes of stock, yet went home with none – we knew immediately that we had a success on our hands. PATS confirmed this – we were overjoyed to have won an award. “We have lots more ideas in the pipeline and want to really carry on with our research and pioneer more natural effective remedies for pets and us!”

Never give up on your dream I

t’s summer, and the Festival of British Eventing is under way at Gatcombe Park for a weekend of top-class eventing. The festival of eventing invites world-class eventing sportsmen and women from all over the world to compete in one of the toughest three-star events of the season. Visitors can expect three action-packed days of top-class eventing with the new updated cross-country course, which includes an extension of the Avening Banks, providing one of the very best spectator viewing experiences in the world. Fairfax & Favor will be making a return to the event this year with some new additions to their range – the Chatham coin purse, the Sennowe belt and the Highcliffe bag. Together with the launch of the new collection, we caught up with brand ambassador Olympic event rider Gemma Tattersall to discuss her Olympic success, which horses we should keep an eye out for and her Fairfax & Favor favourites. Gemma Tattersall is the eventing world’s woman of the moment. The spring of 2016 saw a surge of form, which included third place at Badminton with Arctic Soul and winning the Olympic trial at Bramham with Chico Bella P. As a result, Gemma had three horses not only qualified but also longlisted. It was Quicklook V who was finally selected and with whom Gemma proudly represented Great Britain as part of Team GB at the Rio Olympics. Her hard-working attitude and determination to never give up bagged her a place on the eventing team with her childhood idol Pippa Funnel, a dream come true for the eventing star.

Congratulations on qualifying for the Rio Olympics in 2016, this must have been a moment in your career that you will never forget. Can you tell us how you felt when you qualified? It is certainly a phone call I will never forget! Having one horse qualify for the Olympics would have been unbelievable but having three horses qualify for the Rio Olympics was absolutely incredible and an honour to be asked to represent my country doing something I am so passionate about. After hearing the news, the pressure really set in to keep the horses happy and healthy in preparation for the Olympic Games. We are delighted to have an Olympic rider on board as a brand ambassador for Fairfax & Favor. What is it about Fairfax & Favor that sparks your interest? They are the most beautiful

looking boots and not only do they look good, they are extremely comfortable. For me, the fit is perfect, and I always get

– there’s always another day With Gatcombe just around the corner, are there any fences you would isolate as the most difficult and challenging to navigate over? At Gatcombe the Folly complex is always a tricky combination of fences to tackle. They always build a skinny corner with a tricky distance. This is one part of the course where your lines have to be accurate and your distance has to be correct to avoid making any big mistakes. Ensuring I double check my distances on my course walk allows me to feel confident when riding this element of the course. When you are busy competing it must be nice when you get the chance to relax. What is your go-to piece from Fairfax & Favor’s collection that you would wear in your free time? My go-to pair of boots would have to be my tan-coloured Regina boots, I’ve had these for years and they still are my favourite boots I own, they are beautiful. I recently just got a new pair of Chelsea boots and I love them! They go with jeans perfectly and are super comfy.

asked where you can get these boots from, they truly compliment every outfit. Let’s talk about your incredible upand-coming three-star mare Santiago Bay (Kizzy). What makes her such a fantastic horse and do you intend to take her to Gatcombe this year? For me, I think what makes her so fantastic at her job is that she is extremely competitive and wants to gallop and get on with her job. She has this competitive edge in her which makes her so special, she loves her job and is keen to win. Combining this with her bold and careful jumping style is what makes her a truly great horse. Kizzy’s autumn plan has not yet been decided, however it is unlikely she is going to go to Gatcombe this year as she competed a lot last year. Kizzy is still very young and we don’t want to rush her by pushing her too soon. She is definitely showing the signs of being a superstar horse in the making and she is only nine!

With such a fantastic array of horses, are there any that you are excited about for the future and any we should keep an eye out for? My top four current horses are Arctic Soul, Santiago Bay, Quicklook V and Chico Bella P, who are all going amazingly at the moment. Ones to watch out for in 2018 are Chilli’s Gem, who is an eight-year-old homebred mare aiming to be competing at three-star level in the autumn. She is a very clever mare with a strong, bold jump and is definitely one to watch for the future. Her brother Chilli Knight is also one to keep an eye out for, he is showing great potential and is starting to realise how talented he is but it's taking time. He is set to be competing in the Eventing Young Horse Seven-Year-Old Championship in October. Finally, another horse to watch out for in the future is eight-year-old Billy Senora, a fantastic little mare who is set to be competing at three-star level by the autumn. Growing up with horses, who was it who inspired you to have a career in eventing?

Where did your passion and determination come from to be so successful in such a high-risk sport? My passion sparked from my mother’s love of horses, she had a riding school when I was younger and my love of horses grew from there. My eventing idol is Pippa Funnell, she is a fantastic rider and I’m always ringing her to ask for advice. It was a surreal moment being on the same team as Pippa in the Rio Olympics, I honestly still find it unbelievable today. She is truly an inspirational sportswoman. You are many riders’ eventing idol, forever showing hard work and dedication to the sport. With years of experience, is there any advice you would give to a young event rider who wants to follow in their sporting hero’s footsteps? I get asked this question a lot and I always give the same advice, never be afraid to work hard and never give up. Good things don’t come easily, you have to work hard to achieve your dreams – and if it doesn’t all go to plan, there is always another day!

In the beautiful surroundings of Andalucia horse lovers of all abilities can have an incredible holiday. Whether you’re travelling alone or looking for a family break, there is something for everyone on this Andalucian Hacienda holiday. The 16th-century farmhouse and its outbuildings have been beautifully restored, with a few modern additions, to give guests an authentic yet comfortable stay. An abundance of activities are on offer, from riding lessons and hacks in the tranquil Andalucian countryside, to swimming, massage treatments and cooking lessons. This flexibility, along with the quality of the riding, the friendly welcome of the hosts and the deep care that is shown towards the animals (many of whom have been rescued) has proved to be a winning formula with the guests.

This year we’re going back for the third year running! As a family we generally don’t go to the same place twice but we love this place so much, we can’t resist. Christine clearly loves her horses and they get the best possible care. The horses here are not your average riding school plodding ponies either, but beautiful, well-schooled and excellent to learn on. We started as beginners and have been expertly looked after; they are excellent at tailoring the lessons to your needs. We’ve been very impressed with the steps taken to ensure the children are safe while still learning. The staff ensure that you get the most from your holiday and we especially enjoyed the picnic hack. The hacienda itself is a lovely building with fabulous views and a beautiful safe courtyard for the children to play in; the children can spill out of our apartment into the courtyard and we know they will be fine. It makes the holiday very relaxing as a parent. DEBORAH

When I arrived I felt an ‘air of relaxation’ with a genuine warm welcome, which as a solo traveller was very reassuring. It was the ultimate holiday experience that ticked all the boxes, so much so that I have since returned several times, both with friends and by myself. Many of the horses have been rescued but they are all beautifully schooled and are extremely well cared for, to ride them is a real privilege. The experienced instructors leave you inspired to progress and each visit has provided unique experiences; riding to music in the indoor arena, popping over small jumps and practising lateral movements. I have had so many ‘perfect moments’ and memories at the hacienda that the combination of wonderful hosts and staff, people, charming accommodation, beautiful horses, dogs, and home-cooked food make this a favourite place for me to. Each time I return home feeling healthier, more relaxed and inspired. KAREN

I took up riding again when my kids left home and wanted to see if a riding holiday was for me. This holiday looked beautiful in pictures and good value for money. I also really liked the idea of riding in the sunshine and lazing by their glorious pool in the afternoon. I’ve now returned four times and have absolutely loved every second I spent there. I tend to travel alone, but always meet wonderful, like-minded people there who become firm friends. All the staff are very friendly and helpful and really look after you. The horses are fantastic. The hacks in the morning are paced to suit your riding level, and the leaders take great care with the clients. If you prefer lessons, you can swap and have two lessons a day instead. I have had lunge, dressage and jumping lessons during my stays and always learn so much. The hacienda has become a real home from home for me – it’s a little slice of paradise with wonderful, well-schooled, beautifully looked after horses and rescue dogs, all of whom enjoy a cuddle.

The horses are beautiful, there really is the right horse there for everyone. I’ve been with my son, a complete beginner, and my 70-year-old mother, who is a capable rider but hadn’t ridden for a few years. I’d go for a morning hack through the olive groves then a lesson in the afternoon, or a ride through the local town and stop for a beer. My sister, who doesn’t ride, joined me once and she was driven out to join the group lunches. I’m vegetarian and have always enjoyed the food. When I went with my son the chef made him some child-friendly meals. I have always got on with the other people staying there and have made some good friends; we try to arrange our visits to the hacienda at the same time. ELLA

I first visited the hacienda with my friend. We loved it! The horses were amazing, every size and shape, something to suit everyone. The accommodation was fantastic and the food was outstanding. The staff cannot be praised highly enough, attentive and friendly, nothing is too much to ask. The tuition was great, helpful and informative; we both found our riding had improved just in the week that we were there. I think the most telling thing is the fact that I’ll be going on my 16th visit this summer! I’ve spent three of the best New Year’s Eves there, spent 18 days over summer, taken my mum to visit and this year will be taking my boyfriend. The house is a true paradise to me. I’ve had the opportunity to ride some amazing horses and do some things that I would never have been able to try in England – Paso Español, canter travers and even half pass. The hacks take in the beautiful local scenery and there is nothing like cantering through the olive trees, under a crystal blue sky with the sun on your back…heaven. I find everything I need for a perfect holiday inside the walls of this Andalucian hacienda. ASHLEY

Your Horse & Country Magazine shares all you need to know about The Festival of British Eventing, and why you won’t want to miss it.

Glorious

Gatcombe

In 1983, HRH The Princess Royal and Captain Mark Phillips opened their idyllic country estate in Gloucestershire to the eventing public, and Gatcombe Park Horse Trials was born...

Today, the event boasts a variety of championships classes and sees 50,000 visitors through its gates, coming to witness the thrills and spills of top-class eventing in spectacular grounds. Now named The Festival of British Eventing, presented by the British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA), the event incorporates The British Open, The Smith & Williamson British Intermediate, The Dodson & Horrell British Novice Championships, as well as The TopSpec Challenge for The Corinthian Cup, the National Restricted Novice Championship, held at Restricted Novice level. An Advanced Class also gives top riders a chance to run their second horses over the weekend.

Following on from the success of last year, this year’s championships will once again incorporate the live-streamed Event Rider Masters Series (ERM) which sees the very top riders in the sport vying for the ERM title as well as the British Open and National Championships all in one class. Gatcombe Park is renowned for its picturesque cross-country course built by the legendary Captain Mark Phillips. His updated course sees an extension to the water complex on Avening Banks that

Harry Meade

‘Why I love Gatcombe’ International event rider Harry Meade discusses The Festival and talks about his role on the organising committee “The Festival is a high-profile event in our calendar, which features a national championship in this country as well as championship classes at lower levels,” says Harry. “The time of year and the absolutely stunning setting at Gatcombe Park makes The Festival one of the most enjoyable and attractive events in the country. “It’s got a lovely feel to it and is a very civilised way to watch top-level eventing. The crowds aren’t as big as an event such as Badminton Horse Trials, so you can easily get a good view of the fences which makes it great for spectating. It’s a natural amphitheater, with the Park Bowl the perfect place to sit in the beautiful August sunshine and watch eventing. “I have some fantastic memories of this event, including when I was second in the advanced. I had the fastest time of the day, which is a feat in itself due to how hilly the course is! “There’s a real festival feel with the great variety of trade stands and the attractions that take place in the main arena, making it a great day out for the whole family. “I remember going to Gatcombe as a child when my father was competing there. I then competed in The Pony Club jumping as a child and went on to compete there as an

adult, so I’ve seen it from all angles; as a child, then a competitor, and now as a committee member which I became at last year’s event. “It’s really interesting being on the committee and being involved with all of the different aspects that are required. I can give a perspective as a competitor from my own personal experiences as well as from fellow competitors, and from a spectator, owner and sponsor’s point of view. “The decision-making has been a real eye-opener because I don’t think people appreciate just how much is involved. The timetable is the hardest thing to do because every class is a championship and we want to do each one justice and give it as prominent a place in the timetable as possible. “It makes me appreciate just how much we are indebted to event organisers across the entire calendar and the hardworking volunteers – it’s mind-blowing how many volunteers it takes to put on an event. We couldn’t do it without them. “It’s great to be able to put something back into the sport and hopefully help keep developing The Festival as an event. “I’m really looking forward to returning to compete at this prestigious event this year.”

was added in 2016 and proved extremely popular with riders and spectators alike. The water complex is a particularly good place to view much of the course and, combined with the unique Gatcombe Park Bowl, provides one of the best spectator viewing experiences in the world. Held August 4 to 6, 2017, the Championship horse trials not only offers first-class eventing, but also a variety of tradestands, attractions and a food walk to suit all ages and interests. It’s certainly a Cotswold event not to be missed! u

Catherine Sharpley PORTRAITS I am an English artist living and working in Gloucestershire, UK. I work in pastels and in oils, generally drawing and painting horses and family pets but also other subjects, including landscapes and portraits. Initially I like to meet the subject/animal in order to get to know him, discuss what you want and take some photos. I will then go back to my studio and start a charcoal study. I will then return to the subject and complete the portrait from life which usually takes from between 3 - 5 hours. I can make portraits of animals if there are only photos. It is nice to have as many as possible, in order to try to catch the character and true colour.

GLORIOUS GATCOMBE

Mary King

‘I proved them wrong’ Olympic eventer and Your Horse & Country Magazine-sponsored rider Mary King first graced the hallowed turf of Gatcombe back in the 1980s.

H

ere, she reminisces on her experiences at The Festival and explains why the event means so much to her. “I first competed at Gatcombe in the 1980s and first won with King Boris in 1990,” says Mary. “I remember it well because it was the year that I was left off the World Championships squad. I was really disappointed not to have been picked, so I went to Gatcombe wanting to prove them wrong for leaving me out, and ended up winning the Championship! It certainly made me feel a lot better. “I also won in 1996, the Atlanta Olympic year. I took King William to Atlanta in early July and things didn’t go quite to plan, so we returned home. “King William was so well that I thought it would be a shame to give him a break

and lose his fitness, so I phoned up the chairman of selectors and asked her what she thought about me riding him in the British Open Championships at Gatcombe, and she said, ‘As long as you win it, it’ll be OK,’ and we did, so that was quite a sweet success. “Captain Mark Phillips’ cross country course at Gatcombe is very undulating, which some riders don’t like, but coming from Devon near the cliffs, which is naturally very undulating, it suits us and our horses very well. “It’s such a beautiful venue with the big Park Bowl in front of HRH The Princess Royal’s house. It’s extra special because it’s got such an amazing backdrop. “I’m hoping to qualify three nice young horses for the novice championships at The Festival this year, so watch this space!”

Emily King

I

nternational event and Your Horse and Country Magazine-sponsored rider Emily King has great memories of the event both as a spectator accompanying her mum, Mary King, and later as a competitor herself. “I absolutely love the event – it’s one of my favourites,” says Emily. “It’s always had such a great feel to it, and the setting is superb. The British Open is such a prestigious championship – not just anyone can enter it – so the calibre of competition is very high, which all adds to the occasion. “The course is unique with its hilly terrain and it’s always testing and competitive – it’s never a walk in the park and you have to have your wits about you, which makes it exciting. The leader board certainly sees a change after cross-country! “Another great thing about the event is the amazing Park Bowl, which enables you to watch much of the course from one spot, which is pretty unheard of in eventing. And, of course, the riders’ party on Saturday night where we get to catch up with friends is great fun, too. “Running the classes in reverse order of merit is also an aspect I think highly of as it brings a real sense of excitement as the finals loom – it makes it thrilling to follow. The crowds are always excellent and the time of year usually means the sun is shining, which makes such a huge difference. “I have lots of happy memories from when I was young and Mum was competing there. I remember how exciting the event was and how much effort they made, such as HRH The Princess Royal giving out the prizes, which makes it extra special. “As a competitor, I’ve had some good results at The Festival. I took my top horse Brookleigh there when I was only 16 and came third in the advanced class in 2013. Both Mum and I have had good luck there as competitors, so it’s been a good event for us. “This year, I’m hoping to take two horses, one who will compete in the Advanced and one in The Open. I can’t wait to witness The Festival feel again!”

Shopping With over 100 trade exhibits to choose from, you’re sure to find something for everyone at The Festival. The tented village offers a unique variety of stands selling just about everything from indoor and outdoor clothing to items for the home and garden, plus pretty much anything you might need for horse and rider. If you like the idea of handmade products, don’t miss the rural craft tent as part of the Rural Crafts Association, which boasts a selection of stands exhibiting British craftwork and design. If it’s food you’re after, The Festival benefits from delicious, locally sourced produce as well as cuisine from all over the world, which can be explored in The Festival Food Walk, with full bar service and numerous high quality fast food outlets serving a range of food throughout the event. There are further fast food and ice cream outlets dotted around the site as well as all around the cross-country course. If you fancy something a bit different, The Hamptons International Garden Club is an arena-side enclosure for members only (which can be bought daily or in advance), which has a fully licensed bar and grill area with a counter service selling tea, coffee and lunch. It is the ideal location from which to enjoy the day's arena entertainment in style.

Attractions If the top-class eventing isn’t enough, The Festival is also host to a broad range of attractions and entertainment that will appeal to all ages. Don’t miss The Festival’s classics such as the BETA Pony Club Inter Branch Team Showjumping event, a fiercely fought competition between 20 Pony Club Teams to see who will be the best on the day. Fast and furious, the Shetland Pony Grand National is a spectacle in itself. Despite the ponies only being 40 inches high and the silk-clad jockeys no more than 13 years old, the competition is just as fierce as at Aintree. The first pony and rider combination past the post in the final round will qualify for the final at the famous Olympia, The London International Horse Show in December. If skill and agility interest you, be sure to witness the live shows of Atkinsons Action Horses, a company that specialises in providing stunt horses to productions such as Victoria, Peaky Blinders and Poldark. Watch as they draw the crowds with their high-energy and explosive shows. Witness the thrill and excitement of the Pony Club Mounted Games where local Pony Club teams compete in a variety of games that test speed, control and agility of both pony and rider. For those with an interest in “dancing

horses”, don’t miss the spectacular Dressage to Music display which showcases ponies and horses at different levels, culminating with a Dressage to Music display at the Grand Prix level. This year Riding for the Disabled (RDA) will be putting on a display as it is The Festival’s Official Charity in 2017. Last but

not least, The Dubarry Burghley Young Event Horse classes are a hugely popular competition that showcases potential “four-star” horses at an early age. Open to four and five-year-olds, the Series encourages breeders and trainers to produce potential world-class three-day event horse.

Help is at hand to get your stables sparkling

T

he Animal Health Company are well known in the equestrian market for their NoBute range. They were the first manufacturer in the UK of this herbal liquid infusion of the devils claw root. The NoBute range is still one of their leading equestrian products. Among their other equestrian ranges, they also offer a collection of cleaning and hygiene products called StableZone. StableZone products are suitable for all sizes of yards as they are available in sizes ranging from one-litre bottles for your smaller yard, up to 20-litre containers for larger commercial yards and facilities. Hygiene in the stable yard isn’t just for large commercial yards or competition venues, it should become part of your routine at every stable. By regular full clean-downs and using a good disinfectant, you can help to keep on top of bacteria, viruses and fungi. The Animal Health Company have a proven and tested disinfectant called Defence 7. The dilution rate is between 1:50 and 1:300, depending on the disease you need it to be active against. So a little can go a long way. Defence 7 is active against equine influenza, EVA, equine infectious bronchitis, ringworm, glanders and strangles. Use in stables, horse lorries, on the yard, wash rooms, indoor schools, as a footbath etc.

Defence 7 is on the approved list by Defra. For full details visit www.animalhealth.co.uk For a gentler clean, use QuipClean. This concentrated, low-foaming steriliser and cleaner is very effective. Using half a cup in a bucket of warm water use to clean your yard tools, feed bins, water/ feed buckets, rubber matting, lorry walls, your horse’s snaffle (and other style of) bit, patio... even your wild bird feeders. For stubborn dirt, leave to soak for five to 10 minutes. Its low-foaming action makes QuipClean easy to use and rinse off. To help reduce bedding waste and lower ammonia levels in stables, try adding StableZone bedding powder when you “bed down” your stable. This natural anti-bacterial powder is very absorbent – sprinkle it under the bedding where your horse normally urinates in the stable. The powder quickly absorbs moisture, helping your bedding and stable to stay fresher for longer. Don’t just use in the stable, try it in your lorry or trailer and for other unwanted spills, like motor oil. Available in either 5kg tubs or 25kg bags. The final part of the StableZone range is Rug Clean. This non-biological liquid laundry detergent is active even at low temperatures, making it ideal for washing

rugs, numnahs and dog beds, which can require a lower temperature wash. This detergent can be used in a machine or for hand washing. Rug Clean has been used by professional rug cleaning companies and is also available in sizes to suit the different needs of different yards. The Animal Health Company are a family-run business who take pride in their products and product development. Their products are manufactured here in the UK and available to wholesalers, retailers, equestrian businesses/yards and for general sale. They have an easy-to-use website as well as trained staff who are happy to help with queries. They have started to offer discounts through promotional e-newsletters and their Facebook pages, so sign up to be kept up to date with their latest offers and news.  Visit www.animal-health.co.uk or call 01787 476400

PDS DELICATO MONO FLAP £2950

N E W CO L L E C T I O N S A D D L E S We are very pleased to announce the launch of two new saddles to the PDS Professional Dressage Solutions Carl Hester Collection. The new shapes of modern day sports horses were taken into consideration as were the shapes and needs of the many riders that had been sitting on these new saddles. Ensuring that the horses could move freely and that nothing impeded their performance. The PDS team used Carl’s fine tuning and ability to “feel” the difference in movement and balance enabling us to add design details to enhance the saddle’s fit and performance.

A brand new saddle that has been in development and tested throughout the year with the team. Recognising that saddles are a personal choice, and whilst ensuring maximum comfort and freedom of movement for the horse is key, for the rider and horse to work as one, a rider also needs the same feeling for movement, support and freedom. With the Grande and Escapado being a deep seat option providing more seat support, and the Integro being a narrower, shallower seat option providing more of an open seat, the creation of the Delicato is a perfect balance of both of these, providing a close contact feel with a lighter supportive seat, to enable a seat option for all rider requirements. Also available, the PDS Delicato Mono Flap Alto, ideal for horses with a higher wither and greater wither to back differential.

The PDS Professional Dressage Solutions Carl Hester Collection features the unbreakable Polymer Synthetic tree offering strength and flexibility. The tree interacts with the movement of the horse and rider, enabling the horse to move freely and giving the rider comfort. Looking after your horse’s back at any time is crucial to its heath and performance, with the X-change system within the PDS collection, means the saddles can be easily adjusted, to ensure that your saddle always fits perfectly. Each saddle within the range features AMS panels which is a mix of flocking and specialised foam layered evenly to distribute load and reduce pressure on your horses back.

PDS ESCAPADO MONO FLAP £2950 A brand new saddle, this was developed over the last year to help Carl sit closer to some of his wider fitting horses. With a deep seat, providing a greater rider support, it offers freedom of movement through the back and shoulder yet with reduced bulk in a mono flap. It is also suited to riders who want to feel closer to the horse in this close contact design. Suited to horses with low to medium withers. Also available, the PDS Delicato Mono Flap Alto, ideal for horses with a higher wither and greater wither to back differential. COUNTRY PUB PITSTOP Hare and Hounds, Westonbirt

Perfect place to paws and relax T

When it comes to treating yourself to a pub lunch there is one place where you can be sure of real quality – and a friendly welcome for your four-legged friends, finds Rob Stokes.

he elegant Cotswold stone building that is home to the Hare and Hounds hotel and Jack Hare’s bar dates from the 19th century but it has surely never looked so inviting, so appealing and been so beautifully presented as it is today. It stands in an idyllic setting in the heart of the Cotswold countryside with the famous Westonbirt Arboretum as one of its neighbours. It’s also less than a couple of miles from the Highgrove Estate, home to Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall. This is a place of quality and warmth where there is real attention to detail. Relaxing here is easy and the food is superb. Small wonder that this hotel, just a fiveminute drive from Tetbury, has won the Visit England Gold Award this year. It is no accident that Jack Hare’s bar, and indeed the rest of the hotel, is so welcoming and appealing. It is the vision of one person, Pamela Horton, who with husband Michael owns the Hare and Hounds along with eight others in the Cotswolds. Mrs Horton selects and

oversees every aspect of the decoration and personally chooses each piece of furniture and art. The result is individual and inspiring. No two bedrooms are the same yet they are linked by fine taste and a skill for combining the best fixtures and furnishings. Every room in the hotel, including the bars and restaurant, draws on the surrounding countryside for its textures and hues. “We do try to reflect what is around the hotel,” said deputy general manager Ross Taylor. The colours in the bar and throughout the ground floor range from subtle burgundy to soft greys and creams complimented with wallpaper of green leaf fans in William Morris style. There are warm pattern mixes on the rugs and soft, rich leather on the arms of sofas. The countryside is reflected, too, in a range of original art, much of which is from Devon-based painter Katharine Lightfoot. Her mural of larger-than-life hounds adorns the entire wall behind the bar.

30  |  SUMMER 2017   Your Horse & Country Magazine

There are other examples of her work on neighbouring walls including cows. On another wall there is a collection of black and white photos of polo ponies in action. Nearby, just inside the front entrance, there is a sculpture of a sleeping dog lying underneath a table. Beside him stands a silver bowl of water. This is a hint at the Hare and Hounds’ attitude to dogs, for they are not merely welcomed here. They are actively encouraged. If you are staying there you can pick a dog-friendly room with a blanket and a water bowl provided. Jack Hare’s bar even has its own dog menu, which includes pork sausages, braised venison and baked fish with potatoes and peas. “Our guests really like the fact that we make a special effort for their dogs,” says Mr Taylor. As if on cue a woman arrives with a black Labrador, who receives a warm greeting and pats from everyone. We were there for lunch in Jack Hare’s bar. It occupies the front of the building

COUNTRY PUB PITSTOP

with a bar to the left as you enter and three separate but open areas where you can eat and drink in comfort. We had a round oak table next to a hearth, which stood between two rooms and was home to an elegant wood burner. There is a wide-ranging menu including Jack Hare’s own-recipe sausages, Cornish sardines and steaks. Dishes range in price from £14 to £23. There are also Jack Hare’s homemade burgers and a children’s menu. The prix fixe menu offers two courses for £17.95. There is a specials board too, from

which my friend and I both chose main courses. Each was £14 and they would have graced the table of any restaurant. I opted for pan fried sea bream with pickled fennel, on crushed potatoes and salsa verde. Its presentation was eyecatching and its taste was superb. The sea bream was light and its skin delicately crisp. My friend selected a traditional chicken, mushroom and tarragon pie with mashed potato, carrots and broccoli. Locally sourced produce cooked and served with simplicity and style. We decided to share a dessert and selected the cherry clafoutis with bitter chocolate sorbet. The blend of the fruit and chocolate with baked light batter was sheer heaven. The cost was £7.50. “We provide good quality food, locally sourced, prepared and presented well from a varied menu that changes with the seasons,” says Mr Taylor. The food, like the surroundings and decor, is really important but so is the atmosphere and the Hare and Hounds hotel is friendly and welcoming. As we ate, a woman and her elderly mother were sitting nearby enjoying a lunch together. A little later a couple with two young children walked in, collected a box of Scrabble and sat playing while they waited for their meals to arrive. No one rushes you here. The service is attentive but not fussy. This is the perfect

place to while away an hour or two over a leisurely summer lunch. There is an extensive wine list and Jack Hare’s real ale is also on tap. People who have visited Jack Hare’s bar write about it being “ a special place” and they are right. If you have the time, do walk around the immaculate grounds from where you can see Beaufort Polo ponies wandering in nearby fields. And do remember, if you are visiting Gatcombe for the British Festival of Eventing in August, then the Hare and Hounds and Jack Hare’s bar is only 20 minutes away. You can enjoy a meal in more formal surroundings in the dining room but if you are looking for a casual lunch or dinner then you could do no better than to step into Jack Hare’s bar. But when you go, don’t forget to take the dog or you may never be forgiven.  Hare and Hounds Westonbirt, Tetbury, Gloucestershire GL8 8QL | 01666 881000 | www. cotswold-inns-hotels.co.uk/hare-andhounds-hotel/  The Hare and Hounds and Jack Hare’s Bar is a short drive from the M4 at Junction 18, taking the A46 towards Stroud, then the A433 signposted Tetbury/ Cirencester for three to four miles past Westonbirt Arboretum.

GATEHOUSE HS1 JOCKEY SKULL Conforms to safety standards: SNELL E2001, and BSEN1384. SNELL E2001 is the highest manufacturer equestrian hat safety standard in the world and includes a unique test that simulates a rider falling into a fence rail, or having a secondary hit by a horse’s hoof. It features a top quality leather fourpoint harness and Gatehouse Airflow lining. This hat also comes with a free padded storage bag. Suitable for competition under FEI, Pony Club and HRA rules.

The Veredus Carbon Gel Vento Tendon Boot COLOUR EDITION The heat released from the horse’s leg passes through the microperforated neoprene layer and is then distributed in the 3D mesh ducted fabric. Fresh air enters through the air inlet as a result of the animal’s movement and directs the heat accumulated in the ducted fabric upwards to the outlet grille. Ventilation is therefore horizontal - from the inside outwards - and vertical from the bottom upwards: an innovative technology, never tried before. Flexor tendon protection is ensured by the carbon combined with a nitrexgel shock absorber film. • Double ventilation • Tendon protection in carbon + nitrexgel. • Quick-release tip • Anatomically-shaped shell.

The New Veredus Grand Slam Carbon Gel Boots also available online. Matching fly veil and saddlecloth are available.

RODNEY POWELL PRO AIR JACKET

here’s no shortage of places to shop for equestrian goodies this summer. Of course, you can’t beat an equestrian sporting event trade fair. Chester’s Bolesworth Showjumping event in June is sure to offer some great retail therapy along with some opportunities to keep up with the Cheshire set, showcasing “quality retailers offering everything from equestrian goods to premium fashion and lifestyle brands”. Hickstead’s Royal International Horse Show in July in Sussex is also a perennial shopping favourite. With more than 250 exhibitors, the “hive of retail activity has something to suit all tastes, from seasoned shoppers seeking out show discounts and special offers to souvenir hunters”. There is something exciting about treating yourself to a new accessory, fashion item or wardrobe staple while spectating at a horsey event, and of course, we all need that extra piece of

Retail industry booming According to the British Equestrian Trade Association, equestrian retail as a whole is still booming. “In between professional and leisure consumers lie many semiprofessional riders and participants whose interest is split between earning a living and pure leisure activity,” the association notes in its National Equestrian Survey 2015. The last survey, which highlights new spending patterns and changing trends, found that the economic value of the equestrian sector stands at

 There are always plenty of essentials on the horse owner’s shopping list!

£4.3 billion, an increase from the £3.8 billion spent in 2011. There are 19 million equestrian consumers in Britain, with females representing 74 per cent of the riding population, and there has been significant growth in the number of riders aged between 16 and 24, standing at 403,000 in 2015. These are, of course, two very influential buying sectors! Purchasing equestrian goods in bricks-and-mortar stores and online has, pleasingly, continued to grow, says the survey. Ninety seven per cent of people still buy from retail stores and 64 per cent of people order equestrian goods from the internet, with a (financially frightening!) £3,600 being spent on each horse in 2015 alone. These encouraging stats also reflect the wider clothing industry’s findings on consumer spending. In 2015, £57.7 billion was spent in Britain on clothing, footwear and accessories (Planet Retail, 2015), with £26 billion directly contributing to the UK economy from the UK fashion industry (Oxford Economics, 2014). It is fair to say that Brits do like to shop!

Why do we shop? Some things within the horsey sector are non-negotiable – such as feed, tack and horsecare items. But are we guilty of overspending

SHOPPING

on our equine passions? Recently pondering “why does shopping make us feel so good?”, the BBC revealed that impulse spending is a big problem for many people, quoting associate professor of psychology at San Francisco State University in California, Ryan Howell, as saying that impulse buying is a survival instinct – a “scarity impulse” – to get something while we can. (It’s in-built! Waving that credit card at the paypoint is clearly an instinctive urge... That should make us feel somewhat better about the tenth unnecessary saddle pad we have hidden in the back of the garage, loft or tack room.) There’s another reason why people buy things on a whim, according to the BBC’s Bryan Borzykowski. He proposed that the concept of retail therapy is a real thing, that it is truly therapeutic. For some people, if they’re feeling sad, shopping will make them happier because it restores some control in their lives.

The next big thing Whatever the reason for our spending, it is fair to say that horse owners do not hesitate to spend money on their equines. But what’s the next big thing in the industry? The innovation award winners within equestrianism are always a good indicator of what we will soon consider to be must-have items. At this year’s British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) Trade Show, a range of products was recognised. In the technology sector, road safety was talk of the town, with Trilanco’s HackCAM UGlow showcasing a padded camera vest with changeable wording on the back and glow-in-the-dark tape. In the country clothing division, a modern take on tweed was launched by Musto, whose Gore-Tex tweed jacket won a prize. The lightweight, machine-washable women’s tweed jacket is completely waterproof, with hand-warmer pockets. Gone are the days of your heavy wool jacket weighing you down when it gets wet. Not a wardrobe staple for summer, of course, but an ideal garment to buy at a trade stand ahead of autumn hunting. In the horsecare equipment category at BETA, Harry Hall’s Protechmasta infrared rug impressed the judges, with its infrared technology featuring ceramic fabric to reflect infrared rays back into the horse’s body, to increase blood flow gently. The garment is said to detoxify the body and promote healing for the horse – obviously leading the way in the holistic lifestyle market, whereby we are increasingly looking at ways to manage the health of ourselves and our animals

through holistic means. The rider clothing award at BETA went to Kask Spa’s helmet with detachable merino wool padding, to maintain body temperature, boost breathability and dry quickly. A fine example of quality, traditional materials being used to update a product that already works well, but could benefit from improvements.

Fashion-forward In terms of fashion, the watchword this summer is reportedly the colour yellow. In all hues, from lemon to mustard, the sunshine colour is supposedly set to grace our wardrobes this year. In a grown-up, darker shade, yellow always works well for summer drinks receptions and sporting spectacles, especially when teamed with contrasting tailored clothing in ‘natural’ hues like taupe and navy. Another bold, on-trend colour is fuchsia pink – Paris Fashion Week reported the likes of Balenciaga, Céline and Valentino as all employing the most shocking shades of this pretty hue in their collections, noting that the power of pink was clear to see. The brighter fuchsia shade is maybe more suited to younger wearers to a degree, but this “pop of colour” would look smart as an unpatterned polo top teamed with smart dark breeches, or as a flash of bold colour on a scarf or wrap, worn with a floaty summer outfit. Men’s beanie hats, even in summer, are reportedly going to be a trend to watch this year, while stripes are set to be de rigeur for men’s shirts, tops and jackets. As usual, long leather “country boots” continue to stay in fashion, for both sexes – us “country types” love to be prepared for every eventuality, even when the sun is beating down. Ladies, why not wear them with shorts for a quirky, summer look?

becoming increasingly sought-after – think cushions featuring badgers, red deer and doormice, and greetings cards boasting pictures of foxes, squirrels and hedgehogs. Finally, if you’re after something truly personal, why not consider a piece of wall art or a set of coasters featuring a photo of your loved one’s favourite dog or horse? This is a lovely way to create a memento of the animals we love. As we said earlier on, our impressive roster of countryside and equestrian trade shows in the UK are the perfect places to pick up a special gift or a reminder of a lovely summer day out. 

Gifting goodies Gifting is, of course, a big part of the shopping industry. Within our sector, we are very inspired by nature and countryside activities. Buying jewellery made from recycled shotgun cartridges or a sample of beloved horse hair is a lovely way to source something to give that’s a little bit different. Locally made cosmetics or foodie hampers will certainly show your loved one that you care! Meanwhile, fashion and homeware accessories featuring native British wild animals are Your Horse & Country Magazine SUMMER 2017   |  35

Why nothing will beat MaxiBed for your horse

Warm, comfortable, easy to maintain and eco-friendly – MaxiBed Horse and Animal Bedding is the ideal choice for horse owners. MaxiBed is a quality, dust-extracted bedding product made by South Gloucestershire-based family firm Penntree from clean recycled wood to stringent standards.

“ “

After years of using many other types of bedding, I’ve found that MaxiBed is better than anything I’ve tried before. I can’t imagine using anything but MaxiBed now. I certainly wouldn’t consider going back to shavings or straw.

Reasons to choose MaxiBed bedding Warm, Comfortable & Supportive MaxiBed makes a warm and comfortable bedding layer, retaining warmth and offering good insulation from the floor beneath the bed. It also stays friable, meaning the surface layer does not tend to cake together like other bedding materials, allowing animals to move the material around to form a comfortable and supportive bed. Ideal for Dust Allergies & Respiratory Conditions MaxiBed is made from recovered wood fibre which, unlike other types of raw materials used in the manufacture of bedding material, is low in dust from the outset. All remaining fine dust is extracted during the manufacturing process, which makes MaxiBed ideal for use with animals who are sensitive to dust allergies and respiratory conditions. Keeps Dry on Top & Free Draining MaxiBed is made of wood chips, not flakes or shavings. Wood chips are chunkier in cross-section

and are irregular in shape. This allows moisture to drain freely through the bed, keeping the surface layer nice and dry on top. Quick & Easy to Muck Out A MaxiBed bed is really easy to maintain. Muck can simply be lifted straight off the surface leaving the bed beneath undisturbed. This means less MaxiBed is then required to replenish and maintain the bed. Reduced Wastage Because the mucking out process removes mainly the muck and not the MaxiBed, the amount of bedding material wastage is greatly reduced. This results in a smaller muck heap, compost heap or fewer trips to the recycling centre. Biodegradable After use MaxiBed can be disposed of in the same way as other traditional forms of bedding. However, if you are making a muck heap MaxiBed is much less likely to blow about in the wind and easier to form a muck heap with. It will also rot down nicely and can be used to spread on land or plough in to condition soil structure.

KINGS

Eventing season is in full swing and we catch up with Mary and Emily King as their string of horses show what they can do in competition. Photos by Amy Lathrope-Reid/Indy Equine Photography.

ven at the top of your game, eventing is full of ups and downs – especially when, as Mary and Emily King have been doing, you are allowing your novice horses to finally put all that training into practice in competition for the first time. Emily’s Amadeus, Quinlan Z and Kings Rose got their first taste at Tweseldown, an experience she describes as “entertaining”! Since then, some unscripted moves and slightly wobbly lines between fences aside, the trio have made some big leaps forward, she tells us. Meanwhile, Mary’s Billy, Bobby and Joey have made the big step up from novice to intermediate – and are doing the family proud… 

Prep, prep, prep

Leading up to the start of the season, cross-country schooling sessions are very important. We do a fair bit of XC preparation at home by going up and down banks, jumping logs in the woods and visiting the local river. With young horses we would always go with an older horse to lead the way and, once they get confident with going in and out of shallow water and walking up and down the river, we then get them sliding down and clambering up the riverbanks, first following an experienced horse, then on their own. We also use tyres, feed bags and pallets to make pretend XC fences in our arena. The next stage is taking them to a XC schooling venue, and near us we have Bicton, Pontispool and Stockland Lovell.

We are advised on the horses’ diets by our sponsor Baileys Horse Feeds. Their nutritionist visits regularly, checks the horses and we discuss their performance. They then advise us on any alterations to their feed charts. Basically, the horses are on high-fibre cubes, balancer and chaff for breakfast and supper, and just high-fibre cubes for lunch. We turn the horses out every day, and some of the younger ones live out 24/7, even when they are competing. In fact, we often turn the horses out the night before a competition to help them be more settled – it can work a treat! I say to our hardworking grooms that I would rather have a slightly grubby horse that is calm and settled, than a sparklingly clean one that is tense and excited! 

KEEPING UP WITH THE KINGS

At home...

Emily... in competition

We have both spent some time doing work for our sponsors – photoshoots for Marksway HorseHage and Your Horse & Country Magazine (both of us) and Hiho (Emily), plus filming for Nedz Bed and Mitsubishi Motors. Emily and I have hosted three River Cottage evenings this year, with 55 people signing up for the yard visits the following day. We have met some lovely people at these evenings, and have adored the delicious food. Stable Comfort (stablecomfort. co.uk), which provides the wonderful cushioned flooring we have, kindly came out to do a couple of small jobs. I have had this comfortable stable flooring down for years – it is brilliant and durable and the horses love it. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Jumpsonline (jumpsonline.co.uk) – a leading manufacturer of polypropylene show jumps for sale in the UK and Europe – kindly delivered us some lovely new uprights and poles, making our arena look very professional. These maintenance-free jumps are fabulous.

e kicked off at Moreton Horse Trials with my experienced horses – Dargun (Dre), Cooley Currency (Currant) and Walitze F Vejgard (Zara) – having easy and happy first runs in the Open Novice (ON). They were all pretty exuberant in their tests but went on to do lovely double clears! I was very excited to be heading back the next day with my three babies to do their first ever eventing competition, but unfortunately it was all cancelled due to the beautiful English weather – typical! We headed to Tweseldown the following week where I had my three young ones – Amadeus (Amme), Quinlan Z (Quinn) and Kings Rose (Rosie) – competing in their first ever British Eventing event in the BE100, which was very exciting! They were very well behaved doing sweet tests, Quinn produced a clear showjumping round, Amme and Rosie jumped well but took a couple of fences down. All three were all hilariously babyish cross country, but we made it to the finish line. The hardest part was actually getting from fence to fence as they know how to jump the fences, but they are only just learning how to gallop across fields and between bushes. I had the big boys (and girl – Zara) the following day in the ON, Open Intermediate (OI) and Advanced Intermediate (AI) classes. Zara did a great dressage test, with an unfortunate pole in the showjumping, finishing clear in the time to win the Open Novice! Waahhooo! Dre and Currant were all still quite jolly in their tests (nice to know they’re happy, though) and went on to jump very well SJ and XC. Aldon was the following weekend, which is always a lovely event for Mum and I, as it’s fairly local and we’ve had good success in the past in the big classes. Our Aldon luck continued, with Dre and I winning the big AI class, which was

super exciting! He did a beautiful test of 28, which led the dressage, then went on to jump an amazingly clean and athletic round SJ and finished with a fast and smooth XC round, picking up just two time penalties to keep the lead. I was over the moon with him. He’s such an exciting and talented young horse and I’ve been looking forward to this year for a while, being able to step him up to CIC*** and give him a taste of the big time. Zara led the Open Intermediate under21s after dressage, but an uncharacteristic two down SJ caused me to take her slowly XC and save her for another day. Currant gave me a great feel contesting his first AI class with a 32, one down and clear XC (feeling beautifully powerful, giving me a fantastic ride). Quinn, Amme and Rosie added another run to their CV with great clears XC in the BE100 (and managing to gallop in slightly straighter lines between the fences this time!). I headed to my fantastic dressage trainer Ferdi Eilberg the following Friday to have some insightful training sessions with Dre and Currant ahead of the AI at Gatcombe Park that Sunday. As planned I was only going to run them dress and SJ at Gatcombe, as they were heading to Belton Park the following weekend for the big CIC*** class – I wanted them to have an outing doing an Advanced dressage test and SJ, but didn’t want to add the strain of another XC course on their legs when they didn’t need it. Dre did a fantastic test in the CIC*** at Belton. He got a little bit excited during the end of the test, but tried really hard to score 45. Currant was first to go in the CIC***, so that is always a slight disadvantage, especially out of roughly 140 starters. But he did a really pleasing test with some lovely work and clean changes to score a respectable mark of 49. They both went on to jump very well, just having a fence each, but for their 

first time at this level I was very pleased.  They were both fantastic and were extremely bold, brave and straight over quite a challenging track. My three babies – Quinn, Amme and Rosie – enjoyed good, confident and happy runs in the BE100s at Portman, Larkhill and Sapey, with Quinn finishing fourth at Portman and Amme winning Larkhill! Rosie was overly exuberant at Larkhill, pulling out some very unscripted acrobatic movements. But she jumped superbly and since then she’s calmed down and is beginning to rein in her happiness! Burnham market was the next international for the big boys (and Zara), which ran over Easter weekend. Dre was incredible. He was lying second in the huge CIC*** section (roughly 150 starters) after doing a beautiful test of 40 and also held his second place after a brilliant clear SJ. He then gave me an awesome round

Mary... in competition The events began in March and it was wonderful to get off to a great start, with my three horses progressing well and trying very hard. I had a win at Moreton on Joey, then at Aldon the following weekend I won the Open Novice with Bobby, who is run by a syndicate of six supportive people who call themselves “The Kings Group” (Gilly Robinson, Liz Knowler, Hazel Fastnedge, Annie Corbin, Fenella Hughes and Annie Jackett), and was second with Billy, who is sponsored by a lovely lady called Liz Young. Joey went steadily to finish ninth. Emily’s win at Aldon with Dargun was very exciting. She won a beautiful trophy that I have won a number of times over the years – the first time was in 1987. Most of the competitors weren’t even born then! My three were feeling very relaxed and confident at Novice level, and felt ready to progress to Intermediate level. It was very exciting competing at the bigger home international events during April. Billy and Bobby both completed the first Intermediates of their career at Belton and Burnham Market Horse Trials, and Joey did his first intermediate at Bicton. I was so proud of them all – it is a big stepping stone in an event horse’s career when they upgrade successfully to a higher level, especially if they are homebreds! So much of their progress is about building their confidence and trust, so

following their first intermediate runs I then dropped them back a level and entered them for the Open Novice at Withington to keep them relaxed and happy. Unfortunately it didn’t quite go to plan! Billy was fine and happily jumped an easy double clear, but poor Bobby had a few coughs and felt flat so I didn’t run him XC. Joey I thought felt OK, but I wondered afterwards whether he was feeling 100 per cent. He was uninspiring jumping through the water complex towards the end of the course, which was unlike him, and ended up stopping at a plain brush fence out of the water due to lack of energy. I fell off (bad riding!) but quickly got back on and finished the course. I will take him XC schooling before his next run, which is the intermediate at Aston Le Walls, and I make sure Joey is really positive at the water complexes! Billy is aiming for the CCI* at Houghton at the end of May, and Bobby and Joey for Tattersalls CCI* (for six and seven-yearolds) at the beginning of June. The ground went so quickly from being very wet to bone dry. But luckily we managed to get out on our fields with our Logic Pro-Harrow and Logic Ballast roller to tidy up the paddocks after the winter. Some of the fields had become very poached so it was very satisfying to get them smooth again. We sprayed the docks, and topped the fields to help the grass to grow evenly.

XC – we set out of the start box wanting to get the time. He was amazing around the whole of the course but unfortunately at the end I rode him too strongly into the final water, causing him to jump too big in, therefore not making the turn to the B element and forcing us to turn a circle, which then accumulated a technical 20 penalties. Such a shame, as we were up on our time and we would’ve finished first or second if we were clear. Hey ho! I was still over the moon with him... and in my eyes (and his) we were clear! Currant did a lovely test of 48, jumped well SJ but unfortunately touched two. I decided to take him slowly to save his

legs, but to give him the experience. Unfortunately he was a little green and was very strong, so I used it more as a schooling round, to prep him for another day. Zara was the winner of the weekend, posting a very smart dressage test of 39 in the CIC**, followed up with a fab double clear inside the time, to finish second in the hotly contested CIC**! Super pleased with her. The babies then made the big step up to Novice at Bicton, which was very exciting. They all coped extremely well, feeling totally unfazed and not seeming to realise the difference at all. They also competed in the Novice at Withington the following weekend and were again very impressive. Amme finished second and Quinn was leading the dressage, but after touching a fence SJ I decided to just take him steady XC... but felt awesome. Rosie was great as well but she also had a steady, happy run XC. I’m very excited to be currently travelling up to the beautiful Chatsworth House for the first leg of the ERM. Second chance at happiness In World Horse Welfare’s 90th anniversary year, Juniors’ patron Emily King goes behind the scenes at the charity’s Glenda Spooner Farm Rescue and Rehoming Centre in Somerset to meet some of the horses and ponies ready to join the charity’s rehoming scheme – the largest of its kind in the UK.

G

lenda Spooner Farm is much like any working yard – nestled in the rolling Somerset countryside, it is immaculately swept and silhouettes of dozens of grazing horses dot the surrounding landscape. But on closer inspection it bears no comparison to the yards I have grown up on. Each of the horses who inhabit the crew yards has its own moving story of suffering. The first two I met were Rosie and Jim – skewbald youngsters who had arrived with an emaciated mare, Maggie. She was Jim’s mother, but was also nursing orphan Rosie – there’s no knowing what happened to her mother. Sadly, despite the team’s very best efforts, Maggie was put to sleep to end her suffering, so before her first birthday Rosie had been orphaned twice. Yet both Rosie and Jim were wonderfully inquisitive, healthy little youngsters, thanks to the care they had received from the World Horse Welfare team. Centre manager Claire told me that as much as the grooms enjoy having youngsters around they are far harder to rehome than most other horses because they require an experienced home, consistent handling and ongoing education that not everyone can offer. The effort certainly has its rewards though, as many have promising careers ahead of them.

World Horse Welfare aims to rehome every horse who comes into its care. Over the last couple of decades, the charity has seen rehomed horses compete at Burghley Horse Trials, perform in the World Equestrian Games and develop into driving superstars. Many become muchloved children’s ponies, which is Claire’s ambition for both Rosie (who, happily, has been successfully rehomed) and Jim. Those of us on the professional circuit also appreciate the true value of companions – wonderfully reliable souls who never hit the spotlight in the same way as the ridden horses, but who are an essential, reassuring presence to our horses. I also met gleaming dapple grey Clippy, who is making an excellent recovery at Glenda Spooner Farm after he was found emaciated in a tumbledown stable littered with rusty nails. Clippy hit the headlines when his story was used as the inspiration for an RHS Chelsea Flower Show Garden gifted by a devoted donor to help raise awareness of horse welfare issues to the general public. Later, I had the chance to ride a couple of the ponies waiting to be rehomed. Claire took me for a hack on a lovely little cob called May, who arrived painfully thin, riddled with worms and covered in lice. Two years on she was a beautifully calm, intelligent ride who was eager to please.

Pleasure competition pony Cracker was perfectly named – she popped a few poles without batting an eyelid and is the kind of pony an experienced teenager could have years of fun with. I am passionate about encouraging children to think about welfare from an early age and would urge everyone who is considering getting a horse or pony to look into rehoming from charities such as World Horse Welfare so they can make space to help another horse in desperate need.  Find out more about rehoming a World Horse Welfare horse or pony at www.worldhorsewelfare. org/Rehoming  World Horse Welfare is dedicated to horse welfare at every level, from working as an independent welfare advisor to the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) and the British Horseracing Authority, to campaigning for better laws and improving the lives of working horses in the world’s poorest communities.  The charity’s four UK-based rescue and rehoming centres are home to more than 300 horses rescued from abuse, neglect or abandonment.  Emily brought homemade goodies and the team had an impromptu Morning Feed event. VET’S ADVICE with Dr Judith E J Maxwell MRCVS BVSc Bsc (hons)

Coat care that will just shine through A

shiny coat is a sign of a healthy, happy horse and it’s often the product of more than just grooming. Common complaints like sweet itch and pastern dermatitis can affect the condition of your horse’s coat so getting them treated is the first step. Diet and the right balance of vitamins play an important part while thorough grooming and bathing will help get that show-standard sparkle for summer.

Sunburn Most horses can get sunburn, but it is infinitely more common on the pink skin around the horse’s muzzle. The tips of ears of non-pigmented horses always require protection from the sun as well. Working in an eye clinic myself, I know it is also worth discussing the pink skin in the eye. Horses have a structure in the eye called the third eyelid, and it is very sensitive to sun damage and secondary changes that can lead to tumour development. There are plenty of sunscreens out there, but my particular favourite is Filtabac as it lasts for up to three days and is non-greasy so they don’t tend to look so dirty and grubby when they come in from the field.

Pastern dermatitis Some horses are more sensitive to this condition than others, in particular quarter horses and standard breds. White skin/haired areas do tend to be the first affected, but it can spread. In some horses, it is a “photosensitivity”, a sunburn linked to liver disease that

causes this outbreak on the skin. In other horses it is a “contact dermatitis” linked to an exaggerated inflammatory reaction to pollens and products secreted by certain plants, in particular buttercups. Either way if your horse has this problem it is essential that they are examined by a veterinary surgeon before you try any other treatments, as a blood sample will be required. Once the liver can be excluded, you can discuss with your vet what topical lotions, management and wraps can be used on the legs.

Show shine That elusive show shine generally comes from the quality of feed that is put into the hors, but I do believe that there is an element of good grooming and breeding that contributes to the degree of shine. Some colours and breeds are much better at “sparkling”, while with others you could be trying for a lifetime and their coat will never shine well enough to see your face in… I think a good vitamin and mineral balance is essential, as well as a high-fat diet to get an extra sparkle and glossy coat. Linseed is the most commonly used oil for improving the fat content in the diet and therefore adding a gloss. Flaxseed, coconut and fish oils have all been used to a greater or lesser degree, and it is important to remember that they all contain fat soluble vitamins A, D, E & K. Therefore, they should be given in moderation, as they are stored in the liver and could lead to toxicity if given in too high a quantity.

Grooming and bathing Once the winter coat is shed there is always much more effort put into keeping the coat clean and sparkling. Generally there is a lot more benefit to the horse’s skin to perform a thorough groom after exercise, as the blood supply will be closer to the surface of the skin, so it will be easier to remove loose hair and scruff at this point. This should be followed by a rinse or bath afterwards. The range of shampoos out there is huge, from products that improve the colour, to those that soothe and get rid of dandruff. Most horses start getting bathed more regularly when the weather improves as you need to wash off the sweat and dirt that will have built up during strenuous exercise. The perfect shampoo would contain a good de-greasing agent and plenty of soothing oils. Loads of clean water and plenty of rinsing is key. However, there are products available now that you can use as a drench/wash without rinsing off.

VET’S ADVICE

Don’t forget your horse may need sunscreen, too, during the summer months; hot weather means horses need regular washing to remove dirt and sweat, left

p

The majority of shampoo on the market is perfect for most horses with normal skin, but you should pay close attention to the equine that has dry, itchy or scratched skin. They will be more reactive to certain chemicals in the shampoo and will therefore require a softer shampoo with fewer ingredients and detergents and more often than not a soothing essential oil in it to quieten the skin.

Sweet itch I could probably write an entire article on sweet itch alone. However, in brief, most horses with sweet itch will be susceptible to reaction from March onwards. The midges that bite the horse and cause the problem become active once the temperature rises above 10°C, so prevention is better than cure and getting on the right management and supplements or drugs early enough is very important. In a nut shell, the horse should not be outside at dawn and dusk, as this is when

the midges are at their most active. They will also be more abundant around areas that are wet and low lying, so avoiding marshes and water courses is essential. The horse will itch its mane and tail, but the true disease is due to an allergic reaction to the midges’ saliva and they normally bite on the sheath and belly area as well as the mane and tail area, so the rugs for sweet itch prevention should always take this into consideration. Supplements are prolific for sweet itch, and the jury is out on which ones work better than others, but certainly ones that contain garlic and essential oils to improve the dryness of the skin should be of benefit. Other creams and products can be used to soothe hot, sore skin and deter the midges from biting further. The newest products contain neem oil, which seems to help to reduce the frequency of bites. There are studies that have demonstrated that horses on a high dose of particular B vitamins can have a reduced incidence of biting. Interestingly

the study also demonstrated that horses that had high blood sugar levels had a higher incidence of midges biting them, which makes sense as a lot of horses with sweet itch also tend to be the EMS or overweight types. Rugs have been used extensively for trying to control biting and, admittedly, there is an argument that to prevent a horse being bitten at all you would have to cover the whole animal from top to tail, including legs, as a midge will try to bite anywhere they can if the situation arises. There are legs wraps, full body suits and fly masks that cover the ears, which will all help. I think there is some evidence to support the impregnated brands that contain a strong dose of repellent in them to help repel the bugs. The density of the netting is also important as the weave has to be very close to stop a midge penetrating it, as they are adept at getting through material. Colour has been discussed for a long time and studies of midges have been reasonably inconclusive. However, other flies did fly toward dark colours more regularly and less towards stripy and light blue. Sprays and gels definitely have their place and there will be always be a need to use repellent on the sweet itch horse. Most products on the market contain a mixture of a chemical that repels and a combination of essential oils that we know have either repellent properties or are soothing on skin. n

Could nutrition be at root of S

cores of British horses are dying from a rare illness linked to sycamore trees…” Spotting headlines like this, horse owners could be forgiven for cutting down their ancient sycamore trees in a bid to protect their horses from the risk of atypical myopathy. Atypical myopathy is a truly distressing disease – horses that have ingested seedlings (and anecdotally the leaves) of the sycamore display many symptoms, mostly related to a lack of muscle function. Symptoms include: muscle tremors; abnormal stiffness; head tossing or a low head carriage; and fast or laboured breathing. In more severe cases, I have noticed that the urine is red or a dark redbrown. Yet, dramatic headlines, such as the one above from the Daily Mail (published in April 2014), has led some concerned horse owners to overreact.

Over the past year, I have had several conversations with horse owners around the country who have had concerns about the risk of their horses suffering from atypical myopathy, as their paddocks had sycamore trees either bordering them or in the near vicinity. Scary articles have made it difficult for me to get some balance into the discussion. For me, there are a couple of questions that I suggest need addressing before sycamores are felled: • How long have the sycamores been there without causing a problem for the horses? • And, crucially, why are the horses eating sycamore seedlings or leaves? In a recent local case at Driffield, where I was asked to manage grassland, both questions were relevant. On

avoiding distressing disease? investigating the paddocks and their surrounding environment, it was obvious that the trees had been there for many years without causing any distress to the horses. That was a good start! Horses are sentient beings, and will only eat what they perceive will supply them with essential nutrition. It is my firmly held opinion that the horses only eat the sycamore seedlings as their paddocks are lacking nutrition. A seedling will be full of sugar and nutrients to help the plant grow and horses will be attracted to them because of this. Once I had the soil analysis results back from the Driffield investigation, it was apparent that the soil had significant levels of organic matter to drive productivity. Also, the trace element status was correspondingly good. The implication of all this is that the horses wouldn’t have needed to eat

the sycamore seedlings as they could access nutrients from the grass. The issue that did need addressing was that the prevailing grass species were significantly unproductive. When I investigated the case of atypical myopathy that I belatedly heard about, it was apparent that the grazing environment was exhausted and the horses were struggling for nutrition. I could not take soil samples as the owner was still so distressed, but a visual assessment of the soil and grass indicated that the sward had ceased functioning as an environment capable of healthily sustaining horses. To say that atypical myopathy is a distressing disease is an understatement. If you have ANY doubts, consult a veterinary surgeon immediately. Jonathan Holmes Lordington Park Agronomy

Shake it off What does your horse’s headshaking mean?

A

t this time of year, vets report a dramatic increase in the number of horses showing signs of “headshaking”. This is a significant neurological disease and shouldn’t be taken lightly. The abnormal movements range from small “tics” to severe and distressing jerking of the head. Most horses will shake their heads up and down, a few may show side-to-side or rotatory head movements. The key point is that it is involuntary. Voluntary head tossing, demonstrated

by some horses in an excited manner, can be natural “showing off” behaviour, not headshaking. In the past, headshaking was considered a behavioural issue, often blamed on poor tack or horsemanship. We now know that this is not only wrong, but is also a cruel and unnecessary approach to a seriously ill horse. Cause One of the problems that is commonly thought to cause headshaking is damage to part of a sensory nerve supplying the skin of the face (including muzzle and ears), teeth, eyes, sinuses and nasal cavity. Usually the brain receives information from these nerves about certain environmental factors (touch, heat/cold, air movement etc) and it then makes decisions on how to respond. One theory about headshaking is that these signals become distorted and the brain perceives them in an abnormal way, which then causes an excessive response. Treatment Most treatment is based around trying to determine the initiating cause and limiting the horse’s exposure to those. Nose nets, ear covers and various other options have been used with varying degrees of success. Various nutritional supplements look to help with maintaining comfort levels, decreasing the immune response if an allergic component is suspected, and attempting to soothe the nerves affected. The most recent advancement

is a treatment used in people for facial neuropathic pain. This is called neuromodulation, using Percutaneous Electrical Stimulation (PENS) therapy and it aims to re-set the threshold level for the affected nerves firing to normal. This involves placing a probe directly over the nerve and stimulating it for a set period of time. In people the only reported side effect is a bruise at the site of probe insertion. Is your saddle a good fit? Your horse knows best!

I

f you’re not certain your horse’s saddle is fitted properly, there’s someone close at hand who can tell you for sure – your horse. His or her reaction to the sight of the saddle can be the best indication that there’s a problem. If your horse or pony backs away from the saddle or bridle, pulls a sour expression, bites, won’t stand for mounting, doesn’t want to be caught or turns his quarters on you then this is a strong indication the saddle is a source of discomfort. If your horse or pony has allowed you to get on, there are other signs to look out for that all is not well. This can include shooting off quickly when mounted, arching or dipping their back, tossing their head, hollowing their spine or carrying their tail slightly to the side of where there could be spinal bruising. As you begin to ride, your horse may nap, rear or buck, find it difficult to canter, refuse to jump or jump big as he anticipates a punch in the shoulders on landing. He may also drag his back feet through jumps, be difficult to turn, drag his toes and be difficult to stop and fight the bit. You may also notice your horse has difficulty in walking a four time beat downhill at the same rhythm as on a flat road and doesn’t track up in front, pointing his toes or striding out. After the initial reaction, your horse may then begin to behave for a period of time before acting up again – don’t continue to ride as this will cause more pain. Your experience as you ride is also a good way of assessing whether your saddle needs to be looked at – it might slip or tilt you forward and if it doesn’t fit you, you could be bruising your horse’s loins as you sit on the back of the saddle. Don’t assume the saddle is pinching the horse and just needs to go wider – this will cause it to

drop more in front and interfere with his shoulder-blocking movement, making him angry or distressed. Over time, there will be visual indicators that your horse is compromising to cope with uneven weight – he might be a poor doer and worries, has become U-necked instead of having an elegant, long topline and can be described as high-withered. He may also have “big shoulders” where muscle wastage has caused the scapula to become prominent. His back toes may be squared off and he may have a flat area on his top rump instead of rounding. The first thing to check is the condition of your saddle – is the front arch broken? Are any airbags in the panel flat or punctured? Does the cantle twist against the pommel? Does it need flocking in front or under the stirrup bars to level it? Assess whether it is really the right size for your horse and whether it is comfortable for you – as I say: “Looks right is not always right!” The most important thing to do after refitting or replacing your saddle is to take it slowly – new saddles are like new shoes! Don’t rush off and have lessons forcing him to change outline – give it a month or so hacking. Avoid elastic girths – he wants to know you are not wobbling about. Girth the first and third where there are three central straps. If there are five, cut the others off! You’ll need to make two-weekly checks that the saddle is still level during a ridden walk by taking a photo. Don’t put your horse in a straitjacket for dressage – no point straps and no balance straps – so he can lift his back and get his legs under and freely swing his shoulder to point his toes! You really do not need an expensive saddle to sit correctly – you simply need a

Staying ahead of sweet itch Award-winning natural product range proves prevention is always better than cure

F

or those of you with animals that suffer from sweet itch, the delights of summer can be tempered by the nightmare of trying to treat this debilitating and unsightly condition. Well, help is at hand at last! Botanica’s award-winning Anti-Itch products can help prevent horses or ponies getting sweet itch if used early, before the insects get a chance to do their worst. Use the Cleansing Wash and Anti-Itch Cream now to be ahead of the midges. When diluting the Cleansing Wash it is best used in a spray bottle, like the ones you get in garden centres for spraying plant leaves. This means you can get the liquid jet right onto the irritated area and are not wasting it on the mane and tail hairs. This will calm the area immediately as the tea tree and lavender get working on contact. The Cleansing Wash will also help dislodge the dead and scabby skin, which itself is a further source of irritation. The Anti-Itch Cream then gets to work, soothing and healing the affected area. It will also improve hair growth, which will further protect the animal from insects. “We have had some heart-warming feedback from owners who have used it with great success on everything from the family pony to top show horses,” said MD Sean Cooney. “One such owner contacted us with great delight to tell us that they had a horse placed at the RDS last year, which they’d thought the previous year would never show again as it had no mane and tail!” Mr Cooney goes on to explain: “The key to the success with our award-winning Anti-Itch system is to get treating early and keep ahead of the problem. We recommend two to three applications a week for two weeks in the spring and then treat again in August as this seems to be the ‘bogey’ month when it comes to sweet itch. A tub of Anti-Itch should last you a year when used in conjunction with

the Cleansing Wash, if you use it ahead of when the bad scratching starts.” Botanica’s range of herbal creams, washes and sprays are creating quite a storm in the professional world. So much so that they have sent the products off to a top testing lab in Paris with tremendous results. “We are delighted but not at all surprised that our range of products have been passed as safe for use on competition horses,” explained Mr Cooney. Salomé Weingarten, docteur vétérinaire, said: “I used the Cleansing Wash diluted in warm water for washing the affected

Botanica International Ltd Warrenpoint Enterprise Centre Units 12 and 13 Newry Rd Warrenpoint BT34 3LD

areas and then applied the Anti-Itch Cream. Results were spectacular, the pruritus diminished immediately after the first application, mane and tail started to regrow (visible after one week), healing and no apparition of new wounds on hocks, face and underbelly. As a vet, I must admit that there is no other product in the available pharmacopoeia (at least in France) that gives such results.” Botanica now has an impressive number of top professionals using their range and this is being backed up by vets who are recommending it to their clients. “Trainers and riders who get to the top of their profession rely on attention to detail to give them the edge,” said Mr Coomey. “We felt that it is important to give them the peace of mind to know that when they use Botanica they can do so without fear of testing positive to anything.”  The range is available through all good tack shops, vet clinics and chemists and you can visit www.botanica.ie to locate your nearest stockist.

Vets highly recommend it as one of the most effective treatments for sweet-itch and some insurance companies will pay for them as an alternative therapy. They are also recommended for the protection of horses with sarcoids and more widely used as a very effective fly rug. The blanket is used worldwide and is made from a unique light but strong breathable fabric which midges cannot bite through. Summer skin: What causes those seasonal complaints?

A

s summer brings a change in temperature and in the horse’s coat, there are a number of skin conditions that can affect the horse and pony at this time of year. By far the most common complaint when the insects start coming out is sweet itch – or equine insect hypersensitivity. The signs consist of raised nodules and a variable degree of itchiness, loss of hair over the mane and tail with a thickening of the skin in these areas. Control of this condition relies on separating the midge from the horse! Prevention is better than cure and stabling during the most active time for the midges is useful, from mid-afternoon to midmorning. Total body cover rugs have been effective in allowing affected animals to graze. Insect repellents can help in reducing the level of attack but are only partially effective. Benzyl benzoate helps when applied topically to affected areas. Interesting work is showing that vaccines that prevent the allergic response to the biting insect’s saliva can reduce the incidence in particular animals. Recent articles from Northern Europe have also shown a good response to a cattle ringworm vaccine. The use of corticosteroids can help the itching animal but their use should be limited to the biting season and care should be taken with animals that are susceptible to laminitis. Louse infestation is a common cause of itching in the horse. The disease is contagious and spread by direct contact. Lice prefer the cooler months of the year and do not survive at over 50 degrees C. The signs are usually self-inflicted trauma from itching, hair loss and areas of broken hairs. Often the horse will be in poor condition. Treatment relies on using an ectoparasiticide such as louse powder, Dermoline shampoo or Deosect. Some of the more hairy breeds require a more systemic treatment, which involves using an unlicensed product called Dectomax. Whatever the treatment, it should be used every 10 days for three treatments to ensure that the eggs have hatched and the resultant larvae have been killed. Chorioptic mange is often seen affecting

horses with feathers but can also affect horses with normal hair types. The most common symptom is foot stamping along with the horse chewing the heels, but there appears to be little obvious itchiness associated with this condition. Very few treatments are licensed for use in the horse. Frontline as a topical application appears to be effective and the intramuscular injection of Dectomax, a cattle product, is also highly effective. All in-contact horses should be treated at the same time.

Sunlight

Photosensitisation occurs either when the horse ingests plants that have

photodynamic agents that are absorbed and circulate, or if the horse has significant liver damage. The photodynamic agents will become toxic to the skin when exposed to the sun and cause a blistering reaction in the white areas of skin. If there is liver disease then there will be a failure of the liver to detoxify the phylloerythrin, a by-product of the chlorophyll that comes from green plants the horse has eaten. This is also an irritant when exposed to sunlight in areas of white skin. Treatment of photosensitisation relies on reducing contact with direct sunlight and, in cases with liver disease, treatment of the primary liver problem.

Fuelling the competition horse G

etting the very best out of your competition horse relies on a combination of good breeding, appropriate training, skilful handling and, of course, suitable nutrition. The emphasis here will be on putting the right fuel in your horse’s tank by focusing on the impact of different forage types and the nutrients contained within. Equine nutrition has come on in leaps and bounds in recent years and we are now spoilt for choice when it comes to selecting feeds. But by going back to basics and thinking about the horse’s most basic nutritional needs, we can help to fuel the competition horse using quality forage, thus reducing the reliance on grain-based bucket feeds and thereby improving gut physiology and health. Fibre will always be the most important part of the equine diet. High-fibre feeds

include grass, hay, haylage, chaff and some bagged feeds. If your horse has limited access to adequate grazing then extra fibre will need to be added to the diet so that the horse receives enough fibre and dry matter per day. Because fibre and forage is such a vital aspect, this should be carefully selected, especially for the competition horse. Hay remains the most widely fed forage and will always hold a significant role, but horse owners will know that it is becoming increasingly difficult to source well-made hay that is consistent in quality throughout the year due to our progressively inclement climate in the UK. Even wellmade hay will have some degree of dust and fungal spore contamination, which could affect some horses to the degree that the hay needs to be soaked. Soaking, however,

will reduce the nutritional value of the hay, increasing the need to rely on bagged feeds to top up any shortfalls in energy and vitamins that may have leached out. Soaking can also be a tiresome task when out and about at competitions! Events and competitions can also be a stressful time for horses, which may discourage eating. When a horse chews, signals are sent to the brain to say “all is well, I’m safe”, thereby reducing stress levels and hopefully impacting on the horse’s performance in a positive way! If they need encouragement to eat then haylage can be a great tool due to its higher palatability. But not all haylage is the same, it can vary enormously in quality and could be inappropriate for the nutritional needs

Claire Burrow – Devon Haylage of horses and so it needs to be selected carefully. Well-made haylage should be high in fibre (noticeable seed heads present) with a dry matter of no less than about 70% and will be slightly more nutrient dense than hay. Good quality hay on average will contain similar amounts of energy to suitable horse haylage – around 7-10 MJ/kg. However, due to the higher palatability of haylage and its increased digestibility, the horse will “get more from it” compared to hay, making it a great choice for competition horses as it is the process of fibre being broken down by bacterial fermentation in the hind gut that supplies the horse with most of its energy. Many people, however, worry that by feeding haylage their horse will turn into a typhoon in the dressage arena! This needn’t be the case if the haylage has been made appropriately and any other feeds present in the diet are suitable. Grass, hay and haylage by their very nature are slow-release forms of energy and so will not cause excitable behaviour. Haylage that has been cut too early, however, will be high in energy and when this is added to the (sometimes fast-release) energy coming from bagged feeds, you may find that the overall energy intake is too high resulting in “hot-headed” behaviour. This is why it is paramount to source haylage from suppliers who undertake annual and thorough nutritional testing and who understand what makes the ideal haylage for horses. For some types and breeds of horse, a simple (but suitable)

forage-only diet may be all they need. Providing this forage is offered on a free choice basis, even some competition horses may only need a small bucket feed to top up calorie intake. Oils contain two to three times more energy than the equivalent weight of cereal and so are great choices to add extra slow-release energy to the diet without the need to offer a cereal-based hard feed. Linseed oil is a perfect choice as it is non-inflammatory and provides the best ratio of omega 3 and 6. It is best to add oils to a fibre-based bucket feed. Protein is sometimes overlooked when assessing equine diets but remains a vital aspect, particularly for the competition horse. Horses can produce some amino acids themselves but others known as “essential amino acids” must be provided in the diet. Hay and haylage contains on average 6-12% crude protein, with earlier cut grass containing higher protein. However, the “crude protein” level of forage doesn’t tell us about the quality of that protein i.e. how much is “true” protein and how much is non-protein nitrogen. Only true protein, which is made from complete chains of amino acids, can be utilised by the horse. Quite often, the only way the end user will know how much protein is contained in their hay is to have it tested independently and with quality varying so much between hay batches this can be an unrealistic option. Commercial haylage producers should also test their crop regularly, but many fail to test the true protein fraction. At Devon Haylage, we believe this is a highly important part of our work and so, with the help of Forageplus, by looking at the nitrogen-to-sulphur ratio in our haylage we can state what the quality of the protein is. This helps the horse owner to assess whether extra protein is needed in their

competition horse’s diet in order to get the very best from them. The balance of major, trace and antagonistic minerals present in the competition horse’s diet is also key to performance. It is perfectly acceptable to offer a broad spectrum supplement to balance shortfalls but at Devon Haylage we have taken this one step further and provide a full dietary mineral analysis, allowing the horse owner to accurately supplement the diet with specific minerals based on forage eaten, health issues and workload. Think of the competition horse like a finely tuned performance engine, with the quality of fuel going in impacting on the quality of the performance coming out. There is no point in spending time and money training the driver and getting the car to look perfect when sub-standard fuel is put in the engine. By getting the horse’s main fuel right – the forage - means that the “engine” is working to its full potential and it is easier to then top dress with the appropriate bagged feed and supplements where necessary. At Devon Haylage, by combining a sound understanding of how to make “forage for heathy horses”, annual rigorous nutritional testing, and a passion to deliver friendly customer support with a range of buying options we endeavour to help the horse owner to really get the very best from their horse. We would like to wish everyone competing this season the very best of luck in their chosen discipline, whether at grass roots or at the very top. We make four types of bagged forage suitable for the leading rein pony right through to the performance horse and would love to hear from you to discuss your requirements. We can also send free samples in the post.

Out to grass... but is grazing alone enough? S

ummer hopefully brings with it sunshine and warm temperatures and, with the usual periods of wet weather, grass can continue to grow abundantly. For horses and ponies that gain weight easily, strip grazing or turning out on a paddock that has been grazed down by other horses or sheep will significantly reduce grass intake without having to confine them to a bare patch of ground or a stable. Grazing muzzles are also highly beneficial in reducing grass intake without having to restrict a horse’s roaming area. Even if grazing alone is enough to satisfy your horse or pony’s calorie needs it is important to provide supplementary feed to ensure he receives a balanced diet. To avoid unwanted weight gain, a low calorie balanced feed such as Fast Fibre is ideal for good doers as a way of providing all the essential vitamins and minerals without too many additional calories. For overweight horses it may be necessary to feed less than the recommended amount of feed and to then add a broad spectrum vitamin and mineral supplement to top up their intake. During particularly hot summers, grazing can become poor when pastures are parched and it can then be necessary to provide hay as supplementary forage to ensure your horse eats enough fibre to maintain a healthy digestive system. Hay should also be provided when horses are stabled and for good doers and laminitics this should be soaked for 12 hours to significantly lower its sugar and calorie level. Many horses and ponies find their workload increases during the summer months as eager owners make full use of the better weather and lighter evenings. While an increase in exercise is great for helping to prevent weight gain, it is important that a horse’s diet is altered to provide additional energy if necessary. Allen & Page’s Barley & Molasses Free feeds have been designed as a stepping stone range – so if one feed is not providing the energy/calories your horse requires, you can simply move up to the next feed in the range. Fast Fibre is ideal for horses and ponies prone to, or at risk of, laminitis and can be fed in larger quantities to provide additional energy if required. A combination of warm weather and an increase in exercise may mean that your horse sweats more than normal and

it is important to replace the water and minerals that are lost. It goes without saying that a constant supply of clean, fresh water should be available to your horse at all times. Providing an additional electrolyte supplement is a good idea if your horse is sweating routinely and feeding a soaked feed is a great way of boosting his water intake.  For further advice on feeding your horse this summer, contact our friendly, award-winning nutrition team on 01362 822 902, email us at helpline@allenandpage.co.uk, visit our website www.allenandpage.com or find us on Facebook @allenandpagefeed

Our eco-fuel is hot favourite! Penntree’s HotBlocks Wood Briquettes are a great alternative to traditional wood fuel. In most cases they perform better and offer real benefits. Our customers find they are ideal for use with woodburners, chimineas and barbecues – bring on summer!

e manufacture HotBlocks in our own factory in Bristol using clean waste wood collected by us from our own regular customers. We carry out checks before the waste wood goes into our shredders to ensure that it conforms to our quality standards. We don’t use contaminated timber or non-wood materials such as MDF, chipboard or other types of particle board. Wherever possible any traces of these materials are excluded. We dry the chips in our own purpose-built ovens to ensure that HotBlocks have a consistent moisture content of less than 10%. No adhesives or binding agents are used to “stick” the chips together; it is purely the pressure applied in the mould that forms the chips into the block shape and because they are formed under

such huge pressure they are much more dense than logs too! Many briquettes will expand significantly when they burn and this can pose a safety risk in certain situations.

Hotblocks Wood Briquettes come in packs of 12 or 24 and can be bought individually or in bulk. Priced from £4.99.

We researched this problem thoroughly and selected a block-shaped briquette which is moulded in one single action

by our machines, rather than by an extrusion process. This, along with our low moisture content and mixed chip sizes minimises any expansion, reduces the risk of splitting and ensures a long, consistent burn. The blend of fine and course chips also makes them easier to light as well! We also take care to pack HotBlocks by hand into high quality, weather-resistant packaging. This ensures that they can be safely stored for long periods of time yet still retain their quality and performance. We’re also proud to be a family business employing local people and producing a quality British product.  Pentree HotBlocks are available for nationwide delivery. t has seemed like a long time coming, but summer is now tantalisingly close, teasing us with its longer days, balmy evenings and the promise of a long-term heat wave across the UK. Thanks to Spanish plumes, the ornithological-sounding heat surges brought over from the continent, the mercury is set to rise this year, weather experts say. Turning up the heat further are tropical air movements over the Indian and Pacific Oceans – known to weather watchers as Madden-Julian Oscillations – which could be sending us some very warm days in 2017.

Summer spectating

Summer is surely the best season in which to enjoy horse sport, if you’re a fan of breathtaking thrills and spills in Britain’s great parks and arenas, often surrounded by vibrant displays of flowers and fauna. Just around the corner is the splendid extravaganza that is Royal Ascot, which takes place in mid-June; Britain’s most valuable race meeting attracts many of the world’s finest racehorses to compete for more than £6.58milllion in prize money. The Queen has attended every Royal Meeting during her reign, and the Royal Procession is always an iconic moment,

heralding the start of every Ascot race day. Windsor Great Park is also home to the prestigious Cartier Queen’s Cup, held in May and June, one of the biggest polo tournaments in the world, and the ideal place to get out your glad rags.

Festival in late August remains one the sport’s must-see events. Elsewhere, the national championships for equestrian sports, including vaulting, reining and beach polo, are taking place in various parts of the UK, offering fans of all disciplines and in all locations something exciting to see.

Gorgeous gardens

According to the National Trust, summer is also the perfect time to visit our nation’s ornamental gardens. We are certain to be treated to a riot of colour at venues including Packwood House’s Yew Garden in the Midlands, Beatrix Potter’s charming kitchen gardens at Hill Top in the Lake District, and the Studley Royal Georgian water gardens in North Yorkshire. A vast array of hidden gems is just waiting to be explored, packed full of character and boasting an eclectic array of beautiful plants, iconic buildings and immaculate tended gardens. If horticulture’s your thing, then visiting formal gardens is the perfect way to learn more about plants. Vibrant displays of rhododendrons, roses, azaleas, magnolias, peonies, herbaceous borders and gloriously scented herb gardens are sure to ignite your senses and nourish the soul this summer.

Staycate in the UK

If you’re lucky enough to be enjoying some time off this summer, then Britain offers some fantastic “staycations”. Summer beach activities are a British holiday staple  Show season is a great excuse to get out your glad rags Photo: Twocoms/Shutterstock.com

– building sand castles, hunting for fossils, crabbing in rock pools and cooling down with a locally made ice cream are what memories are made of. According to the Daily Telegraph newspaper, Britain’s beaches are as popular as ever – from unashamedly touristy hot-spots to wild and unspoilt havens, there is always a bountiful beach within seventy miles, or a couple of hours’ drive, for all of us. 

When you are out and about in Britain this summer, you will of course be sampling the best of what our pubs, restaurants and eateries have to offer. One of England’s favourite dishes is fish and chips – perfect for beach trips and holidays. As you travel the UK, you may be slightly confused as to which mealtime people are referring to! Tea at the end of the day is usually the main meal, originating in the north of the country, and meaning the family meal at home. Dinner at the same time does seem to be a more popular term in the south, although it can mean either a family meal or a formal occasion. If you’re invited for supper, this is usually a later, less fussy meal, and a less formal occasion. If you are having “afters”, again you could be forgiven for making a faux pas. Is it a pudding or a dessert? In general terms, a dessert is regarded as being sweet, while puddings can be both sweet and savoury, and tend to be more “homely” and dense in their appearance; desserts are usually lighter. Confusingly, it is widely said that the term “dessert”, despite often being more of an expertly-concocted dish than the humble pud, is not a term used by the upper classes. If you’re quaffing a good old cup of tea, you can reportedly thank Thomas Twining for bringing tea to the masses in the 18th century. And if you want to make the perfect cup of tea, use china cups and pop the milk in first. If afternoon tea takes your fancy, you are harking back to the halcyon days of tea lounges at the UK’s luxury city hotels in the early 20th century, where light music and dancing could be enjoyed, along with dainty sandwiches and cakes.

Are you sitting comfortably? W

estern saddles are renowned for being comfortable – but the new Block the Shock Apache Western Saddle Wear range has taken comfort to another level. Mother and daughter Helen and Frances Taylor own and run Oxhey Western Trail Rides based in Saddleworth. They cater for all levels of riders, including novice and disabled people. Rides range from one hour long to three-day Trail Blazer rides through the beautiful Saddleworth Moors. This is a long time in the saddle, and is why I chose them to trial our Western Block the Shock range. Apache Western Numnah – 2.32kg The numnah has two sections; the upper part lies directly next to the saddle and consists of high performance memory foam. It moulds quickly to your horse’s back giving maximum comfort by load spreading and absorbing up to 90% impact. The outer hardwearing faux suede fabric reduces slip, and gives a luxurious look and feel. Our trademark metal badge gives the numnah an “eye-catching” finish. British Woollen Section I chose to use British cropped wool because it reduces bulk, allowing closer contact with the horse, and has a lovely

velvety texture. It also prevents the wool from going into tight twists and rubbing the horse. Soft loop Velcro fastenings make it easily removable and will not adhere to other items in the wash. Spare woollen sections can be purchased separately. The Apache Western Saddle Seat – weight 350g GP size I designed them initially for Western saddles, but my testers have also used them on Treeless and very small English saddles. They have more adjustability on the elastic/Velcro strip running under the saddle from front to back giving a snug, secure fit on various saddle shapes and sizes. The top fabric is four-way stretch, breathable spacer fabric. The underside is slip-resistant, hardwearing faux suede. All Block the Shock products have high performance memory foam that stays pliable, even in cold conditions. I hope the new Apache Western products help many more horses and riders enjoy pain-free rides, like they have for Oxhey Western Trail Rides, as their testimonial here confirms. Mags Roxburgh Managing Director Stable Environment Limited

The Apache Western Numnah feels amazing! It is a great fit giving total coverage under the saddle. The memory foam numnah is great, even without the saddle seat on! The longer sides are a definite plus for the girth area and the rider, as it relieves pressure on your bottom, legs, knees and, of course, your horse’s back. You feel closer contact with your horse and their movement feels much more fluid. The Apache Western Saddle Seat is great, especially if you have a bony bum! It is so comfortable and once you have ridden with it you would not want to be without it! If you struggle with back pain or posture issues this is a “must”! It helps you maintain a good riding position, ideal for our novice/disabled riders. Once tried, you will be telling all your friends about it! www.facebook.com/ oxheywesterntrailrides

Whether you own a couple of fields or a couple of hundred acres, being a landowner means taking care of your site and the tools you choose can make all the difference. Your Horse & Country Magazine looks at the essentials.

The best

machine for the job

M

ore than 70 per cent of land in the United Kingdom is used for agriculture, according to statistics from the World Bank. Within this are many smallholdings, purchased by the individual to rear livestock, keep horses and ponies, grow a food type – for all manner of reasons, whether it be for business, food or perhaps just pleasure. What is clear, however, is that there are more private landowners today than ever before, with people across the country investing both their time and money into good old British soil. With an increase in private individual landowners, instead of just the corporate or larger farms, the marketplace has been quick to react in offering all types of machinery and equipment to service plots of all sizes. The days of horse power to maintain our fields has long gone with only a few “traditional” horse-powered farms and smallholdings still in operation today. These days you will find barns and workshops filled wall to wall with tractors, combine harvesters, balers, rollers, harrows, ploughs and much more. For the equestrian smallholder, the list of essential “basic” equipment may include quad bikes, arena levellers and paddock vacuums to name just a few. So it pays to carefully consider what is the right machine for the job.

Tractors

Tractors come in all shapes and sizes, some with front loaders, some without, but most can be adapted to have one as an added extra. We would recommend speaking to the manufacturer of your

specific tractor if this is something you wish to consider, as parts may vary for each different type. Tractors generally come with either a two or four-wheel drive option – this could be something to consider if the land in your area is particularly wet, or more specifically when considering what purpose you will be using your tractor for. For example, if you will mainly use your tractor for simply rolling and harrowing paddocks throughout the spring and summer months then you will probably find that a two-wheel drive vehicle will be better suited. However, if you plan to be ploughing fields for crop then you would most likely find a bigger, more powerful four-wheel drive tractor best suits you.

82  |  SUMMER 2017   Your Horse & Country Magazine

It is also important when considering the right tractor for the job to know whether you will require a PTO (power take-off) shaft. Many of the tractor attachments that you see in use, typically working from the rear of the tractor, will require a PTO shaft. A topper (mower), for example, will require this attachment to send power from the tractor to the gear box in the topper, allowing the blades to rotate. PTOs can be very dangerous and attachments should only be installed when the PTO is not on. This can be done by either turning the tractor off at the ignition or by applying the PTO handbrake (please refer to your manufacturer user guide on how to operate a PTO safely).

BEST MACHINE FOR THE JOB

good support for your horse’s legs when working your horse. Modern levellers are generally on a trailer-type frame, attachable to your vehicle with a towing ball and socket. Some levellers will incorporate a small roller at the rear of the machine, which will help to compact your surface and keep it flat, again adding to the support your arena can offer to your horse’s legs. In front of the roller you will typically find rows of downward pointing spikes, prongs or hooks. There is normally a depth adjuster here to adjust the depth of these. When towing your leveller these prongs will cut through your surface, breaking up uneven parts caused by jumping, cantering and generally working your horse. Using a leveller will not only keep your riding surface level, it will help with the drainage of your school, maintenance, and general good keeping of your investment.

Toppers/mowers

Rollers

Rollers are used to level a surface area whether it be a field or paddock or perhaps, for the equestrian smallholder, a riding arena. Rollers can come in many different sizes. When rolling a paddock, you will need to check the condition of the ground before rolling as if it is too wet the tractor and roller will often just dig up your ground. Equally, if the ground is too hard your roller may simply bounce across the top, therefore not levelling your land out. When used in the right conditions, rollers are a great way to remove animal hoof prints from the ground, creating a safer area for your livestock or animals and helping to prevent trips and falls. Rolling will also help with drainage on your land, reducing the risk of rain water collection in parts of uneven ground. Rollers are generally not powered and are easily attachable to either quad bikes or tractors with either a towing ball and socket or a towing eye and towing pin. Some of the larger heavy-duty rollers may have two or three rollers on extending arms – these are typically operated with hydraulic arms. It is recommended to refer to your manufacturer’s user book on safely operating this type of roller.

Harrows

Harrows can come in a range of different styles. The slightly older, traditional harrow is normally a net of chain linked together with hooks or spikes across the base.

These can vary in size and it is a good idea to have one about the same width as your tractor or quad. This way, you can cover the ground equally as you tow the harrow behind. The more modern harrow is on a frame-like trailer with two wheels, one on either side. These can be towed generally using a towing ball and socket. Harrows, like rollers, are generally nonpowered and can be easily fitted to your vehicle. Harrowing is a vital part of any land care. It helps to aerate the ground, remove dead growth and encourage new growth, helping to support a good quality grass. If keeping livestock on your land, especially horses or ponies, then harrowing is even more important. Horse manure if left will sour the grass, leaving long, uneaten tufts across your paddock. Harrowing your horse’s paddock regularly will help to break drown manure and spread this across your paddock, allowing the rain to wash it back into the ground, again supporting a good, rich, quality grass for your animals.

Levellers

Levellers are more commonly used in the equestrian market and are used to level a riding arena instead of a roller. Riding arenas are typically sand, fibre or rubber surfaces installed to offer a practical, safe riding area for horse and rider. It is crucial when riding in an arena that the surface you are riding on is level, offering a

Toppers or mowers are effectively large lawn mowers designed for cutting grass in larger areas. Much like a roller, these come in different sizes and it is a good idea to have a topper the same width as the back of your vehicle, as this will keep an even cutting pattern when driving. Toppers are typically attached to the back of your tractor. You will require a PTO to use a topper, rear linkage and an A frame. The rear linkage (hydraulic arms) will attach to each side of the topper, with the A frame attaching to the top of the topper. Each arm supports the topper securely, allowing you to lift it using hydraulics from within the tractor while in transit. The blades in most toppers are height adjustable, offering different cutting heights. Cutting grass will encourage good healthy growth, keeping your grass rich in nutrients. It is worth noting that it is suggested that fresh grass cuttings are not a good forage for horses and ponies so it may be advisable to take cuttings away or rotate your horses into another paddock, allowing grass cuttings to dry out. It is always advisable to refer to your manufacturer’s hand book when connecting or operating a topper or mower for the first time. We are very lucky in the UK to have many experienced and knowledgeable manufacturers of agricultural machinery at hand. It is a great practice to get in touch with one of these when considering the purchase or use of any machinery or attachment. We have covered only a few of the basic machines and attachments that you may require for your smallholding and the list really is endless. Our advice would be talk to a professional retailer for further help or advice. n n Please note that the above article is intended to be a basic reference guide and Your Horse & Country Magazine highly recommends contacting a specialised provider of agricultural machinery and equipment when purchasing or using agricultural machinery or equipment.

he Horse Trust is the world’s oldest horse charity based in the beautiful Chiltern Hills in Buckinghamshire.

Riding to Retirement

The story of the Riding for the Disabled Hero Scooby

Our main objective is to provide peaceful retirement and respite care to the UK’s working horses that have served our nation in the police, military or in institutions such as Riding for the Disabled. We also care for the urgent rescue cases that are referred to us through the other organisations. Sadly some rescue cases are so badly treated, no amount of care can change the inevitable outcome. The rescue ponies that we can quickly and successfully care for are fully enrolled into herd life here at our site in Speen, providing a young breath of fresh air to our older retired horses; once recovered the objective is to train those taken into care for basic handling, riding and in some cases driving so that they can one day be rehomed. We are incredibly proud to be supported by our Patron Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal and remain extremely privileged to be able to retire working horses from our various partners including The Household Cavalry, The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery, Horse Rangers and Riding for the Disabled. This article is dedicated to our oldest horse that retired to us in 2013 from another charity supported by Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, Riding for the Disabled.

Meet Scooby Scooby is an exceptional example of a deserving pony requiring a peaceful retirement. Scooby retired to the Horse Trust in 2013, having worked at the New Yatt Riding for the Disabled Association (NYRDA) in North Leigh, West Oxfordshire for over two decades. Due to his lovely temperament, was donated to Riding for the Disabled when he was 11 years old by his owners and arrived at New Yatt Riding for the Disabled (NYRDA) with a generous donation of £1,000.00 plus lots of apples and carrots for his new friends.

RDA TO THE HORSE TRUST Scooby in work

Whilst he was working, he gave riding lessons to children with physical and learning disabilities, when children moved on to bigger horses, they continued to help care for him whilst learning about stable management. His bouncy trot and competitive spirit meant that he quickly became a firm favourite with everyone that encountered him. Scooby took part in games, races, local shows, sponsored rides and even featured in a musical ride for HRH The Princess Royal, who officially opened New Yatt RDA's new centre in 1996 and he subsequently featured in group fundraising campaigns helping to attract donations to RDA.

Enjoying the Fields at The Horse Trust

Scooby retired to the Horse Trust when he turned 30 years old and has never looked back. When he first arrived he could still be ridden for very short periods of time, however he has since fully hung up his saddle and enjoys life roaming around our beautiful site, here in the heart of the Chilterns. Three years on, at the ripe old age of 33 years, old Scooby is fully embracing retirement, remaining a happy and popular resident; he can regularly be visited as he is nearly always in the yard for when visitors come up as he is incredibly patient with children of all ages and really enjoys the attention he gets from the general public.

Scooby can be visited every week on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday between 2pm and 4pm. Scooby is available to sponsor via our website www.horsetrust.org.uk

SUPPORTING OUR OTHER WORK You can help support our residents who cannot be rehomed by sponsoring them today. It costs on average £4,500 per year to care for each of our 100 horses, ponies and donkeys. Our work is funded 100% by public donations and is only possible thanks to the generosity of our supporters.

Duchess Diaries:

The not so Royal rescue of an abandoned pony

In September 2016, The Horse Trust welcomed another welfare resident. Duchess, a gentle piebald mare was found starving and dehydrated by the New Forest Agisters after she’d been abandoned on the common land of the New Forest in Hampshire. It was clear to the Agisters that this little mare who was very thin and unsteady on her feet, had been callously dumped. Domesticated horses such as Duchess who are simply released into the ‘wild’ are unlikely to survive as they are not able to forage for feed or seek out water supplies. Duchess arrived underweight and extremely lethargic, suffering from internal and external parasites, which had made her skin sore from itching. Her estimated age was just 4 years old. It has now been over 4 month’s since Duchess’s arrival, and she is still in the very early stages of recovery, however her future is looking much brighter now that she is in our care at The Horse Trust. Free from parasites and receiving the correct nutrients she so desperately needs, it is hoped that one day Duchess can go on to find a forever home after all she has been through.

The Cleveland Bay Rare, Competitive, Adaptable

T

he Cleveland Bay combines warmblood performance and native hardiness. Though specifically noted for its distinctive solid bay colour, the breed is characterised by its activity, movement, substance and stamina. One of England’s oldest, the breed has been fixed in type since the 17th century and is well known for its prepotence, stamping partbred progeny with its distinctive physical likeness, apparent in many modern sporthorses whose development incorporated Cleveland Bay bloodlines.

Cleveland Bays have excelled at the highest levels in dressage, driving and eventing, as well as in the hunt field, while still appreciated as capable, versatile mounts for riders of more modest ambition. They do their best when given time to build a trusting relationship with their human partners. Easy to keep and happy to live out all year, they showcase their versatility, hunting one day and hacking or participating in riding club another. You might find the same horse

competing locally in dressage, show jumping, endurance, driving and in the show ring. A true all-rounder. The Cleveland Bay horse was already a rare breed when the Cleveland Bay Horse Society and its stud book were established in 1884. This stud book has been continually maintained and protected for over 130 years and is the only official internationally recognised stud book for Cleveland Bays. The breed’s influence is especially impressive in light of its small numbers, estimated to be fewer than 750 purebreds worldwide. Every foal counts Listed as “Category 1-Critical” on the Watchlist of the Rare Breeds Survival Trust, fewer than 30 pure foals are currently being registered each year and the number of UK filly registrations is dangerously low, averaging 10 a year. Ideally all purebred mares suitable for breeding need to add at least two daughters to the stud book if the breed is to have a future.

Georgina - Photo courtesy of MJB Photography

Help is available from the society via grants, supported by the Horserace Betting Levy Board, to encourage the breeding and promotion of pure Cleveland Bays in the UK. The society promotes breed classes at shows around the UK and runs a performance scheme for pure and partbreds. The society also has a pure breeding programme to help mare owners select suitable stallions. The breed is advertised as a “British breed with a history and a future” and enthusiasts are fighting to keep that future assured. For more information about how you can support the Cleveland Bay, visit ■ www.ClevelandBay.com or

orld-class riders need the team around them offering support and expertise to be at the top of their game, too. Transporting their horses to competitions is a huge task, their equipment must be in top condition and that requires craftspeople and engineers they can trust. Burton Engineering is proud to play a part at the highest level of equestrian sport, maintaining, servicing and repairing horse transporters for many international riders, including six-time Olympian Mary King, Badminton 2017 winner Andrew Nicholson and top-level rider Bettina Hoy to name just a few. Guy Burton founded Burton Engineering 16 years ago, combining a deep knowledge of horses with the engineering expertise gained throughout his career, during which he has worked for JCB, Gartells of Yenston and Beares Tractors of Shaftesbury among others. Earning three City and Guilds as an apprentice engineer and learning to repair and operate a vast range of machinery in the ensuing years, Guy also repaired lorries, motorcycles and horse boxes as a busy sideline. Demand from Guy’s private clients, particularly from the equestrian market, soon grew and, to meet this need, Burton Engineering was founded. Guy immediately recognised that bringing horse transporters to a workshop cost his customers time and money and a conversation with none other than William Fox-Pitt convinced him that a mobile workshop, which would see Guy travel to his clients, was the way forward. In fact, William was so keen on the idea he asked the fledgling operation to look after his own lorries. Today, Guy can count almost 20 Olympic riders among his clients, with many more eventers, dressage riders and showjumpers. His knowledge of the equestrian world is more than just

professional – Guy grew up on a farm where horses played a large part in the business and he now maintains an eventing yard with wife Katie, who has ridden for Great Britain many times and is the daughter of Olympic gold medallist Bridget Parker. Guy says: “Understanding horses is a must so having this knowledge I know exactly what the horse needs out of a lorry, where its safety is of paramount importance. “No two horseboxes are exactly the same so when it comes to repairing them

it helps to have a good knowledge and good business friends in this market so that no job, however big or small, can be addressed and repaired.” With a fully equipped mobile workshop, most jobs can be carried out at a client’s premises, reducing expense, worry and loss of time – something Guy believes is vital. He says: “I fully understand that any equine-related sport is very expensive and very time-consuming. Living on an eventing yard and being brought up on a farm where hunters, race horses and point to pointers were brought on, trained and

raced, I fully understood the costs right from an early age. Therefore, trying to save money for the customer is paramount.” Horse transporters are complex machines and so occasionally jobs will have to be carried out at Guy’s workshop. If this is the case, Guy travels to the client, collects the vehicle whatever its size and drives it to his premises before returning it fully repaired. To assist any clients who unfortunately find themselves involved in an accident on the road, Guy has a long-standing relationship with a commercial body shop company that can carry out work – even filling in the insurance paperwork. And to ensure clients are always ready to hit the road, Guy also takes vehicles to a VOSA test station for MOTs and plating. With Guy’s wide range of engineering experience, almost any kind of agricultural machinery can be repaired from his mobile workshop, including diggers, forklifts, quads, tractors and mowers. n To discuss repair work, get expert advice and find out more about what Burton Engineering can offer, contact Guy Burton on 01373 466389 or 07968 395247, email him at guyburton888@ btinternet.co.uk or visit www. burtonengineering.co.uk

Bloomfields stays ahead of the field

B

loomfields launched its first horsebox range in 2005, designed and built by founder Dean Moody. From humble beginnings, Dean built his first horsebox in a 400 sq ft shelter in the stable yard of his parents’ house (called Bloomfield). Being a horse owner from a young age and a trained vehicle body technician, Dean always strives to challenge the status quo of horsebox manufacture. Bloomfields has taken a massive leap forward in 2017, moving from a rented 12,000 sq ft building, to a purchased 44,000 sq ft factory. Already employing more than 25 of the industry’s most proficient work force, Bloomfields is now recruiting an additional 18 highly skilled workers. Dean says: “Our business is booming, and with an impressive 12-month waiting list, we needed to take the next step to be able to supply our massive demand and

continue to be one of Europe’s leading horsebox manufacturers. We have recently taken on agents across Europe, as well as Scotland, the Midlands and south of England, making our horseboxes even more accessible. “Our new factory will allow us to increase production from an average three horseboxes a week to an estimated six per week within the first 12 months, with our aim of 10 a week within 24 months. We have a dedicated Research and Development team continually testing new materials while designing new and innovative features for our boxes. Additionally, our own quality assurance team inspects our builds at every stage to ensure that quality is second to none at all times.” Bloomfields is the UK’s only Renault Trucks approved coach builder and Fiat Professionals, holding VCA European Type

approval across their range. The strengthtested bulkhead gives peace of mind to all customers that their horsebox is as safe as can be in the event of an accident. Director Helen Moody explains: “We pride ourselves on our build quality, customer service, and aftersales support. We actively encourage factory visits, believing that gauging the quality of a horsebox without seeing it in its rawest stage is almost impossible. “All aspects of the bespoke builds are executed in-house and our four bays are open to inspection from any potential purchaser. Having owned horses ourselves, from breeding stock to international showjumpers, we feel we have a wealth of knowledge to advise potential clients on which of our range may suit them best.” Some of Europe’s top riders endorse Bloomfields as “the best on the market”, including Billy Twomey, Guy Williams and Dirk Demeersman (Belgian Showjumping Chef d’equipe). Bloomfields will be attending 161 trade shows throughout Europe in 2017. n For more information, visit www. bloomfields.co or call 01623 869779 to arrange an appointment either at their factory or with an agent near you.

COUNTRY FOOTWEAR

Practical – and stylish

to boot

Time was when choosing footwear for the country meant pulling on a pair of aged wellies or grabbing a battered pair of walking boots but not anymore, writes Rob Stokes.

T

hese days no one needs to abandon style when they step out in the country. Designers have lifted country footwear out of its predictable mud-splattered past and elevated it to a new fashion where form is just as important as function. But they have not done it alone. They have been helped by a string of wellknown faces and personalities who have made traditional wellies and boots not only stylish but sought after. It has not happened overnight. Many trace it back to the early 1980s when Princess Diana, then Lady Diana Spencer, first appeared on the scene sporting Hunter wellies with the Sloane Ranger set. Since then the boots that began life as no-nonsense products from the North British Rubber Company, founded in 1856, have taken on an iconic status. In particular the Original Hunter boots, launched in 1956, have been seen and photographed on the feet of countless celebrities, among them actresses Kiera Knightley and Natalie Portman as well as singer Katherine Jenkins.

Of course Glastonbury and festivals like it have played an important part. Sophie Ellis Bextor performed on stage in them and surely no one will ever forget Dame Shirley Bassey appearing there in her Hunters with DSB picked out in jewelled letters on each side. They have exhibited at London Fashion Week but it is supermodel Kate Moss who has been described by one fashion writer as the “patron saint of the Hunter wellington” and who says her relationship to these famous boots is “symbiotic”. This is not just fanciful talk. It translates into hard cash. Writing in the Daily Telegraph, Natalie Thomas talks about the Kate Moss effect and the positive impact her wearing Hunter wellies had on sales, helping them rise by 10 per cent. It is not only in this country that the benefit has been felt. Overseas sales shot up as well. But even though Hunters are worn by Prince Charles and Camilla they do not have the field to themselves anymore. Not even within the Royal family. Both the Duchess of Cambridge 

and Prince Harry have favoured the French-made Le Chameau, a company branded by The Independent website as the “crown prince of welly makers”. As someone commented: “What on earth would the Duke of Wellington have made of this?” Described by the Daily Telegraph as “practical, understated and smart” Le Chameau boots do look eye-catchingly good and represent far more than a way of keeping out the wet and the mud. Le Chameau closely associate their boots with an active and outdoor lifestyle. The French company, which marks its 90th birthday this year, talks enticingly about grabbing your “trusty” Le Chameaus, enjoying the countryside and feeling the health benefits of getting out and walking. Across another stretch of water the Irish company Dubarry, another significant member of the select group of boot makers, is clocking up its 80th anniversary. They too want their boots regarded as a lifestyle choice, not simply as something that is merely practical. The way they market them is equally telling. “The iconic Dubarry Galway waterproof leather country boot is the first choice of footwear for women who enjoy the country and outdoor lifestyle.” They are pitched at the discerning buyer and people who want to stand out from the crowd even when they are stepping out on a cross-country walk or standing in a field in the rain watching a band. People who sell them, love them. Andersons of Durham speak of their “pride” in offering them for sale. And they talk about Dubarry’s “ability to create timeless pieces that are long-lasting and stylish”. Dubarry has flamboyant roots, taking its name from Madame du Barry, a famous French courtesan and mistress of Louis XV. It was formed in 1937 as a cooperative for the more prosaic reason of giving work to people in the town of Ballinasloe in Galway. But it is the Signature DuBarry Galway boot that has made the company famous. Today these boots are seen at every major horse riding event from Cheltenham to Badminton and on every coastal path from Somerset to Northumbria. Then from across a wider stretch of water – this time the Atlantic – are the Ariat boots. These American boots were conceived and designed for people who ride, ranch and work outdoors. However, they are now sold equally to people who want head-turning styles in the countryside and in the town. Their market is more than an equestrian one, it is high-end fashion. To underline this even the magazine Vogue has featured their Winchester boots  Wellies find their way on to the catwalk Photo: FashionStock.com/ Shutterstock.com

Looking at someone’s wellington boots will tell you about either the person they are or who they want to be

in an equestrian fashion special. Meanwhile, back at home, Welligogs is a brand that describes its design, detailing and style as distinctly British, taking inspiration from the beautiful English countryside. The comfort and style offered by its waterproof leather boots, clothing and accessories have proved just as popular in urban settings as with the country set, says the firm. None of these high-quality, trendfollowing boots is cheap. Those mentioned on these pages can set you back anywhere from £50 to £400. But you only ever get what you pay for and nowhere is this more true than when it comes to wellingtons and boots. They represent more than a necessary purchase, they are an investment, something that will last for years and see you through icy winters and rain-soaked summers, anniversaries and birthdays. But more than that, they stand as a statement that you care about what you wear and what you look like even if you are walking on your own along a muddy country lane where only the birds in the hedgerows and trees will see you. It is a trend that has attracted even the interest of academics. As The Scotsman newspaper reported, there is more to the boots you wear than you may think. It quoted Cary Cooper, Professor of Psychology and Health at Lancaster University, who said: “Looking at someone’s wellington boots will tell you about either the person they are or who they want to be. “If they are wearing wellingtons associated with aristocracy they may be social climbers and if they are wearing boots with a zany print they are almost certainly attention seekers.” These days boots are not simply made for walking. In fact, they are even more than a fashion statement – they are a lifestyle choice. 

The Provision of Equine Tourism in the UK

T

he popularity of the horse has continued to grow year on year since the London 2012 Olympics brought equestrian sport in the United Kingdom to a wider audience. The horse is worth £4.3 billion to the UK economy according to a survey undertaken by the British Equestrian Trade Association in 2015. Three million people have been on a riding holiday in the past 12 months according to the survey. This is clearly a contributor to the £121.1 billion tourism value in the UK, £23 billion of which is generated from the rural sector. The effect of Brexit on the holiday trends of the UK population has been significant and the numbers of British holiday makers who stay local rather than going abroad has increased. This trend is set to continue in 2017 as Government and financial uncertainty remains as we start the process of leaving the European Union. There is therefore a significant opportunity for landowners and farmers to benefit from this growing market by providing equine tourism opportunities on their land. Holiday lets are one of the biggest opportunities available to rural stakeholders and redundant farm buildings can provide authentic and popular experiences. For farmers, the Rural Enterprise Scheme (RES) offers funding for agricultural businesses that benefit the environment or community. Tourism is included in this definition. The buildings must be of an appropriate size and be capable of conversion if this route is to be explored. Planning Policies both nationally, through the National Planning Policy Framework and at local level are supportive of a prosperous rural economy and encourage sustainable tourism. Planning permission will be required for

any change of use of a building and it is worth looking at the site as a whole when considering diversification. Other forms of accommodation include providing Bed and Breakfast, camping, glamping and caravanning pitches. Permitted Development rights allow for land to be used for camping for up to 28 days per year, this can be a useful option for short term accommodation in the summer months. The provision of tourism facilities will also bring additional benefits for local shops, restaurants and pubs, this will in turn benefit the rural economy. Bed and Breakfast on horseback, trekking, horse hotels and hunting holidays are all popular options for both domestic and international visitors catering for the four-legged variety. The diversification of farms and livery yards into providing horse hotels is an option to be explored which can provide enjoyment in the countryside for people and their horses. Many avid riders who enjoy hacking and trail riding can take their horse with them. This also allows areas to be explored outside of the home turf. Providing horse hire can also be a route to take including for trekking, hacking and lessons. The main consideration required with this route is that of insurance. Following British Horse Society guidelines and taking the appropriate insurance policies will ensure that the element of risk that horse riding can bring is covered. There are a number of successful yards such as ‘Blackthorn and Brook’ in Somerset who offer an authentic hunting experience with the Blackmore and Vale. This includes staying in quintessentially English accommodation, exciting days in

the saddle on safe, high-quality horses, an unforgettable experience of English country life and special trips tailored to the individual. The attention to detail they offer includes airport transfers and meals organised. For those less looking for a more relaxed break trips are offered to Exmoor, the New Forest and the East Devon Coast. The provision of equestrian facilities is also a popular form of farm diversification across the country. Providing facilities for hire such as cross country schooling and farm rides can be a hugely financially rewarding and make use of unproductive agricultural land. Providing full time livery for horses can vary from grass keep to a full livery service where stable owners will feed, care and exercise horses on behalf of their owners. The amount of land available and the existing facilities on site will of course have an impact in determining what is possible. Using land for point-to-points, horse trials and hunter trials can also be financially rewarding. Badminton Horse Trials has over 160,000 thousand visitors each May and is one of the Top 10 most popular sporting event in the country. Whilst not all venues will see numbers anywhere near this, providing a place venue for competitive sport that will be enjoyed by both riders and spectators can be a lucrative move. What effect is your surface having on your horse? Why you should consider a fibre additive for your arena

I

t is well known that the surface you ride on has the potential to influence the performance of your horse. There may be one or two arenas that spring to mind where you felt your horse performed better or simply found it easier to work on. Did you know the surface you use will also have an effect on the long-term soundness of your horse? During a 30-minute schooling session of mainly trot work, each of your horse’s limbs will strike the ground approximately 2,500 times! Clearly, there are significant implications with regard to the potential impact your surface can have on your horse, which highlights the importance of using the correct materials when installing an arena. It is the functional surface properties that will influence performance and injury risk and these are mainly determined by the surface material used within the arena. But what are functional surface properties? These include cushioning, impact firmness, responsiveness (how springy a surface feels) and grip (Hobbs et al., 2014; Equine Surfaces White Paper*) and they ultimately influence the vertical and horizontal loads and accelerations experienced by the horse during the hoofsurface interaction. There is an optimal range that exists for each property and it is this that will create the difference between a safe riding surface that enhances performance and one that may be of detriment to your horse and its long-term orthopaedic health. The uniformity of these properties within an arena is also extremely important. Lots of variations in the surface properties caused by factors such as the weather, arena use and poor drainage have the potential to induce stride to stride changes in the biomechanical response of the horse, which will inevitably affect performance and increase the risk of injury. Regular levelling with custom-made equipment to reduce variation across an arena is therefore an essential part of any maintenance programme. So how can you reduce the risk of surface-induced problems and create more favourable riding conditions? The addition of fibre to a surface can help reduce surface compaction and stabilise the surface material, which improves performance. Beta-Ride® has been successfully used in arenas for different disciplines. Its unique blended mix of polypropylene, polyester and nylon fibre can help to optimise an arena surface with

correct maintenance. Once mixed into a surface, the fibre can reduce the impact firmness, which will dampen damaging peak accelerations that oscillate through the limb during hoof impact. What is more, Beta-Ride® has the ability to improve surface cushioning by reducing concussive forces yet still provides enough support for the horse to work on top of the surface. If you find your surface riding deep or heavy, this suggests it is unable to support the peak loads generated during particular activities such as jumping or during canter work and your horse will have to increase its muscular effort to sustain the same movement, which can lead to fatigue-related injuries. If this

relates to your arena, even if it is just at certain periods throughout the year, you may want to consider adding fibre such as Beta-Ride®. You may be happy that your surface provides sufficient support but do you find it responsive enough for your horse? Does it feel active and springy or quite dead to ride on? A surface that is responsive and aids the propulsive phase of the gait will certainly improve performance. Fibre can improve surface responsiveness by increasing the amount of elastic recovery, which is the amount of surface that rebounds when the horse’s hoof leaves the surface. This is something you can look for next time you are watching a

A surface that is responsive and aids the propulsive phase of the gait will certainly improve performance

horse in your arena! Riding on an arena that has no elastic recovery will increase the amount of energy lost to the surface and increase the amount of work required from your horse. The addition of fibre not only helps to support the horse vertically but also horizontally in relation to grip. Sand on its own allows too much hoof slip, especially when dry and does not provide enough resistance while pushing off, turning or jumping. This will affect balance and can increase the risk of tripping, ultimately increasing the risk of injury and affecting the confidence of your horse.

Fibre acts to reinforce the surface material, which reduces the amount of surface movement and improves grip. Lots of food for thought next time you are riding or watching a horse work in the arena! If you are not happy with your current surface and want a surface that is supportive, able to dampen impact shock and improve responsiveness all year round then contact Beta-Ride®Pro Equestrian Services. There are lots of fibre additives on the market, so why is Beta-Ride® different? The stabilising fibre uses 100% new material, is OVAM (European Environmental Standard) approved and comes with a 100% satisfaction rate. Due to its unique blend, moisture retention is improved by up to 3% and its insulating properties help to reduce freezing. With correct maintenance, this enables the arena to remain stable under lots of conditions. Beta-Ride® is supplied in bales for installation into new arenas. If you don’t have the finances available for a complete refurbishment, Beta-Ride® can also be mixed with other surface materials and used as a top-up to rejuvenate your existing surface and enhance its performance. Dr Danielle Holt Dani’s Phd was in the study of investigating the response of the horse

to changes in the functional surface properties. Dani presented her Masters research at the 2014 International Sports Engineering Conference and other work related to rider preference at the 2014 International Conference for Equine Exercise Physiology. Away from the research world, Dani loves to ride and competes her horse in British Eventing and British Dressage competitions. * Reference: Hobbs, S.J., Northrop, A., Mahaffey, C., Martin, J., Clayton, H.M., Murray, R., Roepstorff, L. Horse fencing – maximum protection, minimum costs

T

imber post and rail fencing is commonly used for horse paddocks; however, the maintenance costs are very high. Horses can be injured by split or damaged timber, the animals can crib or windsuck, causing damage to the fence and themselves, and rugs can be torn or become caught on broken struts. High tensile wire fencing can offer a low maintenance, high quality solution to these problems. Tornado’s Torus horse fencing features a smooth, unobtrusive knot in the wire fence that reduces the chance of injury or the fence catching on rugs. The continuous vertical wires – with small spacings of no more than 8cm – give a dense, very strong net able to withstand pressure and impact from large horses. The small spacing prevents horses getting their feet stuck in the wire, or pulling shoes off on the lower strands.

Tornado also makes a mesh with 5cm vertical wire spacing that is recommended for stallions and foals. It is a stronger net and the smaller gaps will prevent foals from getting their legs stuck. Torus horse fence is made from high tensile steel, which pulls tight and stays tight, requiring little to no maintenance. The

wire net offers additional security – not only can it contain your horses and any animals that may graze with them, it also prevents dogs and other animals from entering the paddock. It can be combined with other products such as an electric top wire or a high tensile polymer rail to prevent downward pressure and keep horses from leaning on the fence posts. Tornado’s Fencing Configurator (which can be found by searching online for “horse fence configurator”) assists with accurate fence line positioning and material planning. Tornado support is available from the planning stage and throughout the lifetime of the fence. n Contact Tornado Wire on 01789 778766 (England & Wales) or 01764 655648 (Scotland) to discuss your fencing requirements. www.tornadowire.co.uk

You can tell the difference between a good fence and a poor one. So can your horse. That difference is trust. Unshakeable confidence that your horse will be safe and secure. Tornado Torus Horse Fence makes that difference. Optimal strength. No sharp knots to injure your horse or damage rugs. Closely spaced mesh that protects against hooves getting caught. Maximum protection with minimum lifetime costs.

Perfect surfaces, from stable to parade ring to horse box

O

ur flooring company was established in 1987 under the name Lightfoot Surfaces Limited. Our team at Doddson Equestrian Flooring still comprises three of the original people who started Lightfoot Surfaces and they continue to use their vast knowledge with us now. The product we first used was LS4, a three-part mix that is trowelled onto a prepared surface, such as wood, steel, concrete or aluminium to name a few. The product has been improved over the years and is now called Granlatech LS4. It provides a seamless, slip-resistant surface which is completely impervious and very hard-wearing. We have supplied and installed this flooring around the world for various horsebox manufacturers, including Rice Trailers, Richmond Trailers, Brown Bros Ireland, Boeckman coach builders in Germany – and even in Prince Phillip’s own horsebox. We have also installed Granlatech LS4 for Sheikh Mohamed in

Dubai, the Al Thani family in Bahrain, the Sultan of Brunei, the Sultan of Oman and many more. Granlatech LS4 has been used extensively on horsewalkers, in stables, vets’ rooms, walkways and passageways. We have also installed it in equine swimming pools. When using this product in stables, bedding can be reduced by at least 30 per cent, therefore helping you make savings and paying for itself in a short period of time.

All of our products have been specifically designed for use under or around horses. Our rubber mats are 6ft x 4ft x 17mm thick and can be used in stables, passageways and walkways. The mats are strong and can be easily fitted. Our rubber pavers have been designed for use in parade rings, walkways, passageways and horsewalkers. We also have coloured pavers that will keep their colour in direct sunlight for those areas that always need to look their best. The wall padding that we supply and install is a very hard-wearing, high-density foam and reduces stable injuries caused by horses kicking the walls or doors. We have supplied and installed this product for HRH Queen Elizabeth II at her stables in Sandringham and many more establishments around the world. We also sell wood shavings in large flakes, which come in 20kg bags. We can deliver anywhere in the world, whether it is one bag, one pallet, one lorry load or a container full.

Spotlight on getting your lighting right

I

ndoor arena illumination enables the safe movement of both horse and rider at every level of participation. The actions of both must be clearly seen by spectators, riders, officials and trainers. The lighting should provide even illumination over the total floor area, while shadows should be avoided, as these may cause horses to shy. On outdoor arenas, side-lighting systems are the most cost-effective solution. The position of the columns and angle of the lights are crucial to achieving the ideal uniformity across the arena. The eye level of a rider is typically between two metres and 2.5 metres above ground level and may significantly increase when jumps are taken. This should be considered when determining the right mounting height for lights. The normal height is from six metres up to 12 to 15 metres for full competition level. Glare to both horse and rider should be limited as much as possible. The main course direction for showjumping and dressage will be along or diagonally across the principal arena axis. In both indoor and outdoor arenas, the lighting must be adequate to enable the safe progress of both horse and rider over the jumps, and it is very important that a high degree of lighting uniformity is achieved with sufficient floodlighting positions to remove any shadowing around showjumping fences.

Most purpose-built arenas are rectangular in design, although the overall dimensions may vary considerably. The smallest arena size for dressage tests is 20 metres by 40 metres. Any arena in the region of 60 metres by 20 metres is more widely accepted. Kim Prestwood of Jumping Jack Flash said: “So many people think it is OK to use any type of lights and put them anywhere, but this is not the case. I have been installing equestrian lighting for 30 years so for advice and to discuss your requirements, please give me a call.” n Call Kim on 07768 837454 or visit www.jumpingjackflash.co.uk

All of our outdoor lights are asymmetric, which in simple terms offers: l Wide beam l Definitive distribution within stated area l Can effectively throw four times its mounting height in a horizontal position l Virtually no upward light spill l The possibility of glare is reduced to nearly nonexistent due to the design and positioning of the lamp

Lungeing – for enhanced performance M

ost horses are lunged during the breaking process but this is often discontinued once ridden away. People often fail to realise the benefits of lungeing as part of regular training. Twenty minutes whizzing around on the forehand are counter-productive but correct lungeing with EquiAmi helps to coordinate your horse’s body, allowing him to find his natural balance and develop core strength without the weight and pressure of a rider. By watching your horse on the lunge you learn lots about his movement and weaker areas then apply this to your ridden work. Lungeing aims to encourage the horse

to stretch over his back, engage his hind quarters while lifting his shoulders, working into a soft, accepting contact. The EquiAmi lunge aid encourages softness and stretching while enhancing the outline and improving balance and paces. Dr Hilary Bentley of EquiAmi says that EquiAmi doesn’t fix or restrain but encourages engagement of the hindquarters, lightness of the forehand, balance, acceptance and self-carriage. An independent study showed that, over a six-week period, there was a significant increase in stride length and decrease in asymmetry in thoroughbred horses lunged twice a week in the EquiAmi lunge

aid. These findings demonstrate that, like a gymnastic workout for athletes, regular lungeing can enhance the results of training and improve performance in all disciplines. With endorsements from Paralympic gold medalist Natasha Baker MBE, event riders Harry Meade, Jonty Evans and Rosie Thomas, EquiAmi is being recognized for its benefits in all areas from dressage, eventing and showing through to rehabilitation from injury or surgery and retraining of racehorses. n Visit www.equiami.com; call 01584 891049 or email enquiries@equiami. com
