Discover District the
Come and discover Fort Frances and the Rainy River District, communities that have been crossroads destination for centuries. Today’s travellers can experience great shopping, wonderful dining, and terrific accommodations. Our pristine wilderness lakes and rivers make you feel that you have stepped ashore as the first explorer. Our waters, filtered by hundreds of square miles of bullrushes, provide a safe and fun place to swim, fish, and boat. Our majestic coniferous forests are wilderness parks filled with amazing wildlife. Our winters offer snowmobiling along miles of groomed trails, ice fishing, hockey tournaments, and curling bonspiels. Cross-country ski trails provide a challenge for both novice and competent skiers.
Contents
Our summers offer many exciting outdoor activities. Golf at one of our award-winning courses or feel the “heat” of our weekly stock car races. Walk our fabulous waterfront, or enjoy social games of slo-pitch and soccer. Our advertisers look forward to providing services and products that will make your visit and stay in our communities memorable. The Fort Frances Times is pleased to publish this eleventh edition of the Discover Fort Frances & District. We invite your suggestions and comments to help make this annual publication even better.
Sincerely, Jim Cumming, Publisher

The birch bark canoe was the main mode of transporting goods vast distances via waterways. Created by the aboriginals that inhabited the lands, the birch bark canoes were later used by the voyageurs. The voyageurs, fur traders of European descent, traded European goods with aboriginals for beaver and other animal pelts. A birch bark canoe is on display at the Fort Frances Museum, located on Scott Street in Fort Frances.
