As Summer draws to a close, and the seasons start to change, a whole new year of opportunity begins for our little ones as they embark on the next year of the learning journey.

The charity BanktheFood has launched a free app to help people connect with their local community and donate high-priority goods to food banks.

With food prices skyrocketing and food banks struggling to meet growing demand an app is now available that could make a difference.

Children’s Forest – planting forests for a healthy future

Children’s Forest is an initiative to reconnect children and their local communities with nature and plant forests for future generations. It brings together local landowners, Nature Educators and children from a school or community group to create a local forest.

Approaching your local council or a local landowner to introduce Children’s Forest can be an excellent way to begin seeding a forest in your local area. Once there is a landowner who is keen to host a project, Children’s Forest can work to fit the pieces in place. You could also speak to your child’s headteacher and introduce them to the Children’s Forest.

Since its inception, Children’s Forest has planted over five thousand trees in thirteen forests across the country involving groups of local children.

Toddlers’ gut bacteria predict future obesity

Scientists can determine whether a child will go on to develop obesity by analysing their gut bacteria during their early years, a new study suggests.

Research conducted at the Université Sorbonne Paris found that changes in the gut bacteria that predispose to adult obesity begin in early childhood. The study looked at the data from 512 infants who were part of a study that tracked the lives of 18,000 children born in France.

The scientists detected a link between the children’s BMI score at age 5 and the ratio of two types of obesity-related bacteria in their gut – Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes.

Lead author Gaël Toubon said: ‘The reasons these gut bacteria affect weight is because they regulate how much fat we absorb. Our findings reveal how an imbalance in distinct bacterial groups may play an important role in the development of obesity.’

Patients are set to receive an enhanced NHS 111 service offering increased access to specialist paediatric advice for children as part of a new, recently announced blueprint.

Parents and carers seeking health advice for children and young people using NHS 111 by phone or online will be offered specialist advice, including support from paediatric clinicians who can help them manage their child’s illness at home or decide the best route for their care.

This will see some children referred directly to a same-day appointment with a specialist rather than attending A&E, avoiding hundreds of unnecessary hospital admissions.

The new plans will see an increased number of clinicians, including retired staff and returners working in NHS 111 to provide the enhanced offer to patients.

Our priority is that everyone feels comfortable being themselves and we celebrate our difference strengths, so everyone feels at ease. Keeping the children’s wellbeing at the heart of everything we do creates a community that is calm and happy.

What are your strengths as a leader?

The things I enjoy most about school are the people and the variety, so to be part of that I am as present as possible around our school every day. I try not to take myself too seriously, particularly around the children, so I would like to think that everyone sees me as someone they can approach anytime about anything.

How do you go about attracting and retaining high calibre teachers?

We are incredibly proud that in the last 3 years we have had exceptionally low staff turnover, so we have a consistent and happy group of professionals who enjoy their job. It has been humbling that for the second year running we had the highest staff satisfaction survey results of the the United Learning group.

How would you describe the ethos of Banstead Prep School?

How does the school’s early years provision give children a flavour of life in the prep school?

Our Nursery and Pre-school is an integral part of the school, so the younger children are already living the BPS experience every day. Having their own buildings and spaces gives them a secure base but they

How do your personal values reflect those of the school?

I agree with the saying “In a world where you can be anything, be kind’’. As a fundamental principle for life, I think this is something everyone should aim for.

As a qualified mental health first aid instructor, I have had the privilege of training hundreds of school staff as mental health first aiders. Respecting and acknowledging that everyone has their own challenges and difficulties goes a long way to making the world a little bit better.

How do the facilities and location of the school enhance the curriculum and cocurricular offering?

We feel very fortunate to have such an incredible school site and experiencing our facilities makes the transition to senior school less daunting.

Children have fantastic opportunities to use the facilities in both lessons and co-curricular clubs. Not only do we make good use of them every day, but we share it with as many people, clubs, and schools as possible.

Our STEM centre, sport shall, dance studio, cookery room, art room, swimming pool, Astro pitches are always busy during the school day, evenings, and weekends!

Meet the Head

Can you tell us a little about the history of Essendene Lodge?

Essendene Lodge Preparatory School is over 57 years old, initially started by Shirely Haydock with just 7 pupils. The school grew in size and popularity immensely over the decades. It has always provided an outstanding education within a competitive fee structure. In 2019 the school joined the Inspired Learning Group.

What do you particularly enjoy about working at Essendene Lodge?

I love the community feel and I firmly believe our smallness is the secret to our success. I am very proud of our academic record, but I am equally proud of the hidden curriculum we offer through extra-curricular clubs, wrap around care, holiday scheme specialist teaching and instilling a love of learning in all pupils.

How would the students from Essendene Lodge describe you?

Well, it was only recently the governors asked our pupils the same question and children described me as kind, wise, caring, compassionate and honest. When comparing me to an animal the answers were more interesting such as:

• A bird – as she flies above us looking after her fledglings (the pupils).

• A tiger/lion – because she cares for her cubs but can be fierce when she needs to be.

• An owl – because she is very wise and remembers everything, but stays and looks after her family, but will be firm when she needs to be.

What have you been most proud of since being Headteacher at Essendene Lodge?

I have been the headteacher for 12 years and I am proud of many things, but I am

particularly proud of how our pupils leave our school at the end of Year 6 – happy, confident and fulfilled.

I am also proud of the culture of our school where children feel supported and motivated in a nurturing environment, an environment that promotes wellbeing, respect, inclusivity, and a sense of belonging.

What are the qualities of a great teacher?

A great teacher is many things but a teacher that establishes a connection with their pupils, knows their every need whilst engaging them in learning is key.

Teachers have the ability inspire and foster intellectual growth. A genuine passion for teaching may seem like a cliché but it is more relevant than ever in igniting curiosity.

An outstanding teacher offers guidance and support to help pupils overcome their own challenges. They are often role models empowering pupils to have sense of self- worth in a rapidly changing world but of course they also must put an emphasis on having fun!

Could you tell us a little bit more about what happens outside the classroom. What extracurricular activities are on offer?

Our clubs range from art and craft to sports such as boxercise, football, multi skills to the creative arts like drama and choir. We also offer coding, STEM and Spanish club – something for everyone.

How do you think a head can make a real difference to an individual pupil?

Ethical and Moral Development: As a head teacher, you have the opportunity to instil in pupils a strong sense of ethics, empathy, and social responsibility. By promoting values such as integrity, compassion, respect, and tolerance, you help shape children’s character and contribute to the development of responsible citizens who positively impact society.

What is your biggest challenge at present?

Keeping up with technology in this fastpaced world. At Essendene we’re proud that all our teachers are Apple certified; through a qualification our teachers know how best to incorporate technology into the curriculum to enhance learning. Who inspired you to teach?

The desire to educate came from a young age as I personally felt empowered by my own teachers who believed in me and wanted me to succeed. They served as good role models and inspired me to pursue my own goals.

I am now more impassioned about the education of girls in third world countries as our school is partnered with a school in Malawi. We fund many girls to complete their secondary school education. Not bad for a small school like Essendene Lodge!

What did you want to be when you grew up?

An air stewardess. My dream was always to fly the world and see as much of this wonderful planet as I could! It seems like such a glamourous job.

What is your most useless skill?

Any skill that we don’t need, or use can be deemed useless, and it can be easily confused with something we are not good at! If I were to make a choice, it would need to something that others are not offended by so I guess the ability to hold my breath underwater for a long time!

It is essential to create an environment where emotions are welcomed and discussed openly. Encourage your child to express their feelings without judgment or criticism. By validating their emotions, you provide a safe space for them to explore and learn about what they are experiencing.

Start this process by explaining that emotions are natural responses to the experiences and thoughts we have. Talking about your own emotions is a wonderful way to open the door for them to share too. One effective way to discuss emotions is to compare them to vibrations in the body, for instance, you can describe happiness as a warm, bubbly feeling and sadness as a heavy sensation. This approach helps children associate physical sensations with emotional states, making it easier for them to identify and label their feelings.

Really emphasising the idea that emotions are like signposts that guide us in making decisions can help children understand that they serve a purpose. You can try explaining that just as road signs help us navigate while driving, emotions help us navigate life’s choices. When your child understands that emotions convey important messages about their needs and preferences, they’ll be more motivated to decode and respond thoughtfully.

Teaching simple techniques that children can use as ‘positive outs’ to express their emotions is a fundamental part of supporting emotional regulation and literacy. Art, journaling, or storytelling can provide creative outlets for them to communicate their feelings. Additionally, practising deep breathing or meditation can help regulate overwhelming emotions and create a sense of calm.

Guiding your child through the journey of emotions requires patience, understanding, and open communication takes practice. By framing emotions as bodily vibrations and essential signposts, you empower your child to decipher and respond to their feelings effectively. Creating a supportive atmosphere and offering tools for positive expression equips them with valuable life skills that will serve them well into adulthood. Remember, you’re not just helping them manage emotions; you’re setting the foundation for a resilient and emotionally intelligent future.

Croydon High Junior Bee Club took immense pride in presenting Headteacher, Ms Davies, with Croydon High’s very first jar of honey. The girls have played a crucial role in caring and maintaining our two healthy colonies. Regular inspections and management of each hive ensure the bees are disease free and productive.

Before the girls could taste any honey, they had to prepare frames by removing the capping from the cells and placing them in a spinning extractor drum.

Over 90% of children get first choice primary school

Over 90% of primary school children were accepted into their first-choice school. Similarly, more than 80% of secondary school pupils obtained their top choice.

Recently released data shows that nearly all children in England, 98.6%, received an offer to one of their preferred choices for primary school in 2023, while 95.6% of secondary school applicants also received a preferred choice according to recently released government data on applications and offers.

However, the proportion of secondary school applicants who received an offer for their first preference school experienced a slight decrease of 0.7 percentage points to 82.6%. This decline follows a 2.2 percentage point increase observed in 2022.

Celebrating different learning styles

Just as none of us look the same, everyone is born with tendencies towards certain learning styles when developing literacy, language and motor skills. Recognising your child’s learning style is important in understanding how they access their learning, particularly if they appear to be struggling in certain areas.

Visual learners rely on what they see. Encourage them to use visual aids, sit at the front of the class and write down or draw information.

Kinesthetic learners learn best through doing and moving. They benefit from using tools, acting out or role-playing new information and having freedom of movement.

Auditory learners learn best through hearing and listening. Engage in discussions about what they are learning, read stories out loud and repeat information.

Solitary learners absorb information independently of other people. Let them make notes and recite back, provide quiet learning spaces and give opportunities for sharing their learning. Verbal learners respond well to written or spoken words. Play word games, use rhymes, acronyms and mnemonics, read their writing aloud, encourage discussion and debate. Logical learners use logic and structures in order to learn effectively. Provide problem-solving tasks, challenge them to work things out for themselves and have them verbalise ideas and answers.

Identifying your child’s learning style

Observe how your child naturally interacts with the world around them and also note weaknesses: what types of tasks do they find challenging?

Watch how your child expresses themselves. Children will be more expressive through their natural learning style. Auditory learners express themselves best through words whilst visual learners are more apt to reveal their emotions through facial expressions. Kinesthetic learners use more body language and may seem unable to stop themselves fidgeting.

Consider your child’s interests. These will likely reflect their learning styles. Auditory learners usually show an interest in music and sounds. Visual learners often have interests both in reading, watching TV and looking at interesting objects. With kinesthetic learners, look for an interest in physical activities.

See how your child solves problems. Children lean into their learning styles. Auditory learners tend to talk through and discuss possible solutions whilst visual learners use their eyes to solve problems. Kinesthetic learners will usually try to solve problems with their hands.
