Editor’s welcome At the time of going to press we are about to enter a new month of lockdown and by the time you receive this copy of Petworth Pages we will hopefully be approaching the end of this new lockdown phase. However, what we have seen since March is that no one can say with any certainty what the next few months will hold, so we can only plan ahead week by week. Our local businesses need your help more than ever. So before you jump online, please consider if you can purchase your goods through your local shops either in person or using a click and collect service. Many small businesses will also be out delivering so visit their online or social media portals to find out their plans. My thoughts are with those whose lives and businesses have been affected by the current situation and hope that by the time our Spring edition distributes at the end of February we will be in a better position. Until then, the Petworth Pages team wishes you and yours a good Christmas and all good wishes for 2021.

The Petworth In Bloom team entered this year’s Royal Horticultural Society’s Britain in Bloom competition for the 3rd year running. The last two years they have achieved a Silver Gilt and now have been awarded Gold for 2020. Getting ready for In Bloom

Petworth in Bloom awarded Gold! The Petworth in Bloom team were absolutely delighted with the award, scoring 14 more points than last year and moving them well into the gold category with 93%! Sadly, there was no awards ceremony as in previous years, but the team were delighted to be the only gold in the small

town category for South and South East England in 2020! The judge’s town tour had been cancelled due to COVID-19, so the PIB committee submitted a digital presentation, including a synopsis of its activities throughout the year, covering community involvement, horticultural

planning and planting and promoting environmental issues. An amazing 360 degree virtual tour of the town and planting formed a major part of the presentation. Created by volunteer, James Orrow, it received high praise in the judges’ comments. Visit the Discover Petworth website to view the virtual tour.

Petworth shows itself to be a very community minded and progressive entry... Petworth has come on in leaps and bounds in just a few years In Bloom judging panel 2020 Getting involved

Formed solely from volunteers, Petworth in Bloom maintains all the town’s planting of troughs and flower beds, from outlying areas such as Hampers Green to the Market Square, from the Primary School to the War Memorial. Floral displays are present during every month of the year, attracting many visitors and businesses to the town. This autumn, major replanting of Rosemary Gardens is underway to replace old and diseased shrubs and the town troughs are being replanted with winter flowering plants and Spring bulbs. The 26 hanging baskets have been taken down to be repaired and replanted, ready for next June. In addition, the committee are already working on a themed colour scheme for next summer, a different theme and colour combination for each year. The committee would like to

welcome more volunteers, especially younger members, even for an hour or two a year. Please contact Petworth in

New website Petworth Town Council has launched a new website which will be used to keep the community updated with regards to projects, opportunities & events available to those who live in and visit the town. The website is fully compliant with new accessibility regulations relating to public sector websites which ensures websites are accessible to people with various disabilities. many and we are extremely proud of how the Petworth community has come together to support one another through these difficult times. The Town Council’s Help Desk helped many more vulnerable residents through the first lockdown and is now back up and running thanks to the support of a number of fantastic volunteers, and ready to assist residents who need help during the second lockdown and

beyond. Should you need assistance, particularly with the collection and delivery of prescriptions, please call 01798 344883 from Monday to Friday. Should your call not be answered, please leave a message and your call will be returned as soon as possible. Local businesses have had a particularly difficult time this year and we are thankful to those food outlets who have managed to provide much needed delivery and collection services over recent months. The Town Council keeps a list of these businesses for those who may need to organise a food delivery so please contact the Help Desk on 01798 344883 should you need any assistance.

for their tremendous efforts over the last 9 months. Whilst many of us are isolating and social distancing to limit contact, NHS staff, the team at the chemist and our amazing colleagues at the surgery have been extremely busy helping those in most need throughout the pandemic.

We are very grateful for their efforts and for their commitment to helping Petworth’s residents throughout the pandemic.

Christmas event

Due to the pandemic, the Town Council has taken the decision to cancel this year’s christmas event which is a real shame as it is a day which is enjoyed by many. We are working closely with the Petworth Business Association and local community groups to ensure there is a festive feel in the town during December, despite the cancellation of the Christmas Event, which we hope Petworth’s residents will enjoy. We would also encourage residents to shop locally this Christmas, to avoid unnecessary travel and to support our local businesses during such a difficult time.

Farmers Market Our Farmers Market has been back up and running since the summer, taking place in the car park which better enables social distancing. Upcoming markets take place on Saturday 28th November and Saturday 19th December. With a number of new stalls joining the Farmers Market in recent months, we continued on page 8

We would encourage charities and community groups to review details of the grant which are available on our website, to assist with your efforts particularly as we all try to find our way through this second wave of Covid-19.

Shop local. Visit local. Support local. Chichester District Council are asking residents to support their local shops this Christmas and have created a tag for towns in the local areas including Petworth to use as part of their Christmas campaign. Shopping local has never been more important and the District Council has listed out why:

1 Help the high street and support the local economy

Shopping with local businesses pumps money into the economy and aids our local recovery.

2 Save jobs – and create even more

Supporting our high streets creates jobs in local communities. This makes for a better place to live and work, as well as a healthy local economy.

3 Great deals

Independent retailers offer competitive prices and often reward regular customers or offer great deals that can't be found in major outlets.

4 A safe way to shop

7 A better shopping experience 8 Help the environment Small businesses are often run by people who live nearby. As we start to recover from the pandemic, the experience of buying locally from a friendly face offers a dose of normality that many people have missed.

Local shops often source their goods locally, helping to reduce their carbon footprint. When shopping locally, people are also more likely to walk or cycle to get there, helping to reduce air pollution, reduce traffic and improve the quality of our high streets.

Our businesses have been following Government guidance and implementing measures to ensure that people are safe while they shop.

5 Preserving the heart of the community

A thriving high street is key to boosting the potential of a village or town where people can socialise as well as shop. Local businesses also generate revenue to support other community services that we all access.

6 Spoilt for choice

Small and local businesses often stock items that are made locally and aren't available anywhere else, providing a great range of choice and unique products.

One of the notable features of the recent lockdown was that it slowed most of us down. For those who were mainly at home, travelling to shops locally, and not rushing to the next appointment or school run, the change in pace of life was remarkable. We also walked and cycled more on our local roads and explored our local footpaths and bridleways. But with the lifting of lockdown everything is speeding up again and lives are continuously put at risk on our roads.

Speed contributes to 1 in 5 fatal crashes on UK roads

SLOW DOWN! Road Safety Week (www.roadsafetyweek. org.uk) was held this month as an awareness about how speed can impact on every aspect of our lives. With the increasing number of vehicles on our roads and the speed at which they travel – roads are becoming increasingly challenging, especially for vulnerable road users such as cyclists, pedestrians, motorcyclists and horse riders. In a crash, 1mph can mean the difference between life and death, but we know that people still regularly break speed limits or travel too fast for the conditions of the road. With someone injured on a UK road every four minutes,

and vehicle speed playing a part in every crash, the Road Safety week message is that there is No Need to Speed.

do we understand what appropriate speed is, what leads some people to travel too fast, and what are the solutions that can make sure people move at safe speeds? Slower traffic can help make places feel more welcoming for the people who live, work and play in them. This can mean more people choosing to walk and cycle to get around and more people interacting with each other on the street, creating fitter, healthier and happier communities.

Why is speed so important? The formula is simple: the higher the speed, the longer the stopping distance, the harder the crash and the greater the risk of death and injury. The No Need to Speed campaign run during Road Safety Week is a reminder to everyone of how the speed they travel affects other St Mary’s people. Every time we’re on the road we need to consider what speed is appropriate to Visit www.roadsafetyweek.org.uk for keep ourselves and others safe. ARTISTIC PETWORTH Lockdown Life in Pictures ‘Lockdown Life in Pictures’ was an exhibition organised by The Dragon Galley, Petworth in association with Petworth Town Council. The 26 artworks were created by children from around the globe aged 5 to 11 who were encouraged to paint their experiences of lockdown and what it meant to them visually. A time where the world stopped, families were separated, but also came together, pets had more attention, businesses faced jeopardy, people learnt new skills or took up a hobby. Children missed their friends and birthday parties but found new ways to entertain themselves. The exhibition ran in September when the artwork could be viewed in person or online. Stunning new mural at Northchapel School

Over the summer holidays, Northchapel Primary School was very fortunate to have a fantastic mural donated to them by artist Chloe Dowsett. The ‘Book Nook’ incorporates all of the new classes, the houses they use for whole school activities and even illustrates the 7 learning capabilities that the school help the children to develop through their time there. The children were very excited to see the large magical woodland growing in the heart of the school which has formed the topic of many conversations amongst staff and children.

COMMUNITY

Get involved in your local community Start volunteering If you’ve recently moved to the area and want to get to know more people, or have a change of direction which means you have time to spare, then volunteering is a great way to help the local community. But where do you start?

Volunteer your time

There are lots of local projects that are always in need of volunteers in your area – from schools needing individuals to listen to children reading, to local youth and sports groups needing individuals to run schemes or help with local planting such as Petworth in Bloom (see page 5).

Are you a local business or service that would like to reach 8,400 homes and businesses in Petworth and the surrounding villages?

For advertising starting from as little as £120* you can do exactly that. Contact Harsha Desai adverts@petworth.biz for more information and to book your space in a future issue. *based on a quarter page for a PBA member

Join a Town or Parish Council

All towns and villages have a local council who may have vacancies for a Councillor. A Parish or Town Council is the first tier of local government and provides a valuable role in the local community.

Donate your skills

If you are unable to commit to time during the day many local charities and groups need help with a variety of administrative jobs that can be done in the evenings and at weekends. These include maintaining websites, posting on social media channels, sending out emails, preparing grant applications… your skill set that you use for your dayto-day work may provide a lifeline for one such organisation.

COMMUNITY Seasonal eating

Brussels sprouts are a bit like marmite – you either love or hate them but this season they are here to stay! Try them shredded or flash-fried with bacon and plenty of butter. Blanch whole sprouts briefly in boiling water, douse in cream and bake in the oven for a luxurious gratin. Leftovers make delicious bubble and squeak by mixing the Brussels sprouts with mashed potato, shape into little patties and fry until golden-brown. Maybe top with a poached egg?

Greenpower success at Goodwood

The team of 11-16-year-olds entered three cars into the Greenpower’s IET Formula 24 races. Their newest scratch car, sponsored by Hersham & Walton Motors Aston Martin, secured 4th place within their category. Their two kit cars also did well, securing 7th and 12th place within the same group. Fontwell-based charity, the Greenpower Education Trust organises the Greenpower events in the UK and internationally for teams of students aged 9 to 25. Its mission is to inspire young people around the world to excel in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) through a unique challenge: to design, build and race an electric car. The Sylvia Beaufoy Centre has had a Greenpower team since 2014 and has made it to the International Greenpower Final every year with their kit cars. After receiving sponsorship from HWM last year, the team were able to successfully design and build a new car from scratch and are delighted with their performance. Dan Sneller, Senior Youth & Community Manager at the Sylvia

Beaufoy Centre said: “We are over the moon to have come fourth against some really tough, well-funded competition. I’m really proud of our young people who worked so well together as a team to get the best possible results with our cars”. “We have been very fortunate to have the support of HWM Aston Martin – without their generous sponsorship we wouldn’t have been able to take part in Sunday’s race day. We are grateful to all our supporters who provide

much needed assistance to the Centre to enable us to continue with many projects, such as Greenpower.” The team is now looking forward to the 2021 season, with the young people already beginning to think about how they can improve on their performance next year. If you would be interested in providing support to current or future projects, please contact karen@ sylviabeaufoy.org.

Theivandiram Jeevathasan BEM and his wife Vasu were interviewed by BBC South Today and so the news was out, much to the delight of the Graffham residents. They had also been awarded in July the Covid 19 Community Champion. hall has to offer. For those on a limited budget this hall offers all you would expect from a great venue. Graffham has an incredibly strong community spirit, offers a great variety of activities from ‘Ease into Exercise’ for the older community as well as pilates, yoga, bootcamp and Zumba for the more energetic. The mobile Post Office visits twice weekly and there is entertainment with numerous live music events, tribute bands and artists. Graffham Empire Movies show recent films through the autumn and winter months Covid regulations permitting. Those who need a little nurturing have time with our Emotional Literacy Support Assistant in our Treehouse room or those who need a bit of focus catch-up spend time in small groups, or one to one in Butterfly Class. The focus has very much been on the emotional and physical wellbeing of all the children and staff on their return. We have introduced the ‘Daily Mile’, which is a national effort to raise children’s fitness – we can see the changes in their stamina already! After all the worry and people’s lives being turned upside down over the past few months it has been lovely to have new beginnings.” Find out about Northchapel's new mural on page 19 of this issue.
