YOUNG AMBASSADOR’S CONFERENCE: On Friday 18th November Goldie Willett and Dylan Mukeza (Year 11) attended the Young Ambassadors conference at the Kia Oval.

MULTI SKILLS FESTIVAL:

A number of Year 10 Sports Leaders organised and facilitated a Multi Skills Festival on Thursday 15th December for Year 2 and Year 3 students from three local Primary Schools. It was a fantastic event and the sports leaders excelled themselves in communicating, leading and working as a team to ensure these Primary School students got a really positive taste of competitive sport at such a young age.

The two students have been appointed to represent the borough of Enfield as Gold Young Ambassadors. The conference was very informative and the students had a great day. They were introduced to their roles as Young Ambassadors, which entails promoting the Olympic and Paralympic Games, including raising awareness of the Olympic and Paralympic Values. Congratulations to Billy Francis (Year 11) who has been newly appointed as a Gold Ambassador. As well as Charne Wright and Taylor Coules (Year 10) who have been selected to be Adistars.

PRIMARY SCHOOL LINKS: Capel Manor School - Sport Leaders have been supporting PE lessons in one of our local Primary Schools - Capel Manor. The PE Coordinator at the school commended our Year 10 Sports Leaders on a fantastic start to their leadership programme.

TAG RUGBY FESTIVAL: A number of our Year 11 Sports Leaders assisted with running our regular Tag Rugby Festival for our local Primary Schools. The Sports Leaders coached the primary school teams, organised the tournament and refereed. It was a very successful event, with all the primary schools saying that they were extremely impressed with the sports leaders involved.

Carterhatch Junior School – a selected group of year 10 Sports Leaders have visited Carterhatch School for two multi-skills sessions this term. The Sports leaders showed excellent organisational skills and leadership qualities.

everyone’s a WINNER magazine Welcome to the first of our Olympic Year editions for 2012. As the excitement grows for the start of London 2012 we have focused both Gymnastics and Swimming as our first look at the local side of Olympic sport. In this issue we have also featured our first of this years FEELGOOD specials where Health & Fitness takes a front seat. Many of you will be looking at New Year Resolutions in January and what better way to burn off those Christmas pounds by joining a local gym or even appointing a Personal Fitness Trainer to help you. We have also been to the Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead to experience skiing and spoke to many local sports and leisure providers. Finally, we would like to congratulate Mr. Henry Jacobs for his 40 years of photography service to sport.

SPORT • LEISURE • LIFESTYLE & FITNESS VOLUNTEERING

Anyone can be a Sporting Hero with Sport Makers Sir Steve Redgrave, our greatest Olympian, has launched a new way for people to become sporting heroes in their local community. Sir Steve has joined forces with Sport England to launch Sport Makers, a programme for everyone who’d like to make sport happen for their friends, neighbours or colleagues. The Herts Sports Partnership is responsible for the Sport Makers programme in Hertfordshire. Whether it’s planning the route, finding the pitch or encouraging people to take part – sport doesn’t just happen, it needs people to make it happen. Become a Sport Maker and you’ll not only get the skills, knowledge and opportunities you need to get more people playing sport, you’ll become part of the official London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic sports legacy. Why become a Sport Maker? It’s totally flexible. You choose which sports you want to be

involved with and who you want to make sport happen for – friends, colleagues, neighbours or with a local event or club. It’s extremely rewarding. You will meet other people interested in sport; find new ways of getting involved that suit you and obtain information that will help you organise your own activities if that’s what you want. You will also develop new skills that will help enhance your CV as employers love to see outside activities. Or to put it another way , you will become the sort of sporting hero that makes a difference to the lives of other people – and have a good time doing it. You get free kit and the chance to win Olympic tickets. As well as receiving a free Adidas polo shirt and bag when you attend a Sport Makers’ workshop, once you complete 10 hours as a Sport Maker there’ll be chances to win tickets to attend next year’s Olympic and Paralympic Games.

How do I become a Sport Maker? Becoming a Sport Maker is easy and is open to everyone aged 16 and over. Register today at www. sportmakers.co.uk or book on one of the FREE workshops at Fletchers Lea, the Priory, Ware on 24th January 2012, 6.30pm or at the Arsenal Training Ground, London Colney on 21st February, 6.30pm to hear about How Sport Makers fits in with the Olympic and Paralympic values.

Does your sports event or club need the help of Sport Makers? Are you organising a sporting event or is your club having an open day to recruit more members? You might need the help of some Sport Makers to help things run smoothly. If you have any queries about Sport Makers contact Peter Simmons at the Herts Sports Partnership, telephone 01707 281004 or email p.j.g.simmons@ herts.ac.uk

Edmonton Eagles Amateur Boxing Club, Head Coach Dr. Costakis Evangelou was delighted to accept a Peanut Ball for use at the Club donated from the Edmonton Fire Station with money they raised from the successful Punch a Million event held earlier in the year. The presentations were made by Watch Manager Mark Jordan and Firefighter Ed Haines. Dr Evangelou said, “We appreciate this kind donation of equipment by the Edmonton Fire station. It will add to the excellent facilities for the young people to enjoy. This partnership reflects that the club is not just a boxing club but has also become an essential place of community and bridge building between young people, their families and different organisations such as the fire brigade and police”. For further details about the boxing sessions and school

programmes run by the Club please contact Coach Michael on 07961 709166. Watch Manager Jordan said, “There are several members of Edmonton Fire Station that use the Boxing Club on a regular basis and the Punchamillion event gave us a great opportunity to provide a ‘Face’ of the local Fire Station to the community that we serve and protect daily. The London Fire Brigade are committed to reducing accidental fires in the home and the resulting deaths and injuries. One of the main initiatives in place to support this is home fire safety visits. HFSV help to reduce the risk of a fire occurring by educating people in their own homes of the risks that they personally face. This service is completely free of charge and the community of Edmonton and Enfield can request a HFSV to have smoke alarms fitted by contacting 08000 284 428”

HWAC take top awards at Herts Phoenix Awards

Top Medals for Enfield in the National Championships

HWAC Squad members took THREE of the top five awards at the Herts Phoenix Athletic Club’s Annual Awards in December, with Emily Stevens scooping the top Award of Athlete of the Year, followed Matt Hamilton taking the Male Club Athlete of the Year and Finolla Frederick taking Young Female Athlete of the Year. HWAC Squad members went on to take NINE other awards on the night and in three of the categories scooped both the male and female awards as follows:

MALE AND FEMALE VETERAN ATHLETES OF THE YEAR

Martin Procter and Clare Marsh MALE AND FEMALE UNDER 17 ATHLETES OF THE YEAR Alex Curran and Helena Page MALE AND FEMALE COMBINED EVENT ATHLETES OF THE YEAR

Simon Wake and Jenna Hoyte whilst Olivia Ross-Hurst claimed the Senior Female Athlete of the Year Award, and Deborah Willis and Sian Harry respectively took the top female Sprint and Middle Distance Awards.

Late in 2011, Prtisca Awiti and Wesley Greenidge from Enfield Judo Club both took major national medals in the UK age banded Nationals in Sheffield. Gold went to Prisca Awiti-Alcaraz who impressed the crowd and showed why she is the current British number one by beating everyone in her path, all by the maximum score, from the first fight to the final. Prisca, like her brother Philip, is a huge talent she has made the number one spot her own.

Silver went to Wesley Greenidge from Enfield and who attends Enfield Grammar School. On his first time at the nationals Wesley fought brilliantly to eventually come away with the silver. He has now been recruited into the British Squad because of his consistent results throughout the year and George Hyslop, Club Manager, feels sure that we will see even better things from Wesley in the future.

Herts rafter guides Team GB into world’s top ten As Assistant Manager of Lee Valley White Water Centre, Paskell Blackwell spends much of his time rafting in Hertfordshire. However, as the 2011 World Rafting Championships beckoned, the captain of Team GB’s Men’s Rafting Team was more than happy to swap Waltham Cross for Central America. Costa Rica was the exotic setting for the competition, a four disciplined event with an overall winner and world titles in each of the disciplines. Thirty men’s and nineteen women’s teams from across the

globe took part, all living in a small eco village about one and a half hours from the wild waters of the Pacuare River. Each journey to compete on the river consisted of a thirty minute bus ride followed by a one hour hike. Paskell, who has been competing for the British Rafting Team for seven years and has been their Captain for the last five said: “Team GB had a great start on the first day, recording the competition’s second fastest time on the sprint course. However, the current world champions Brazil won the men’s class with Britain taking the silver medal less than 0.5 of a second down.” Back in the UK and following an immensely successful summer at the only brand new London 2012 venue people can use before the Games, Lee Valley White Water Centre has unveiled a new winter and spring season. Running from 19 January up to 9 April, it welcomes adrenalin fans

Winter Training Staying Focused!

eaW Limited asked Samuel Rosser of PRISM Fitness to write for the magazine on the subject of Winter Training. With the cold weather setting Samuel tells us how to get motivated in the winter.

As the winter nights get colder and longer, the motivation to hit the gym can disappear as quickly as the sunshine and therefore we need to find new ways to stimulate the desire to train. The greatest motivation comes in the form of goal setting, what do we actually want to achieve? Weight loss, core strength, one eye on next Summer’s holiday? Whatever it may be, by setting yourself targets you provide yourself with the motivation to battle through the big freeze and keep training! Goals are entirely individual and it doesn’t matter what they are, but as human beings, we respond to progress, it satisfies and motivates us and drives us forward.

especially one that is important to you, you will give yourself the best chance of success.

Meat for the health conscious at

Marconato Restaurant Are you aware that it is possible to find red meat that allows you the pleasure of a great steak or fillet and yet delivers health benefits? Who said that all red meat poses health risks? If you have considered eliminating red meat from your diet, why not switch to Ostrich, Bison, Kangaroo, Crocodile, Springbok, Impala, Zebra or Llama instead. If you are a health-conscious red meat lover, who does not like to compromise on taste, then these healthy meats are the ideal choice. They boast impressive nutritional qualities and are high in iron whilst being low in fat and cholesterol. At Marconato you can find all these cooked to the highest standard, complimented by our delicious sauces.

Bison Facts •

Bison is the only red meat that is non-allergenic.

40% more protein than beef so you can eat 1/3 less volume still come away satisfied.

Less fat than beef so that you can get much more edible meat for your money.

Bison does NOT taste wild like game meats. It DOES taste like the finest quality beef that you remember from your childhood.

Eating 5oz bison 3-4 times per week can help most people reduce LDL cholesterol by 40 to 45% over a 6-month period.

Bison are the only mammals not to contract cancer.

Marconato’s bison are fed only natural feeds and are NEVER given steroids or hormones.

Bison was the main diet of the Plains Indians: a) never had cancer b) never had heart disease or heart attack c) lived to be 85 or 90 years old AND, scientists speculate would have lived to 125 with adequate dental care.

Fewer calories and less cholesterol than chicken or fish.

Bison meat cooks faster than beef becasue there is so much less fat in the meat to insulate it from the heat.

Why not come along sample these delicious super meats at Marconato Restaurant? Above: Grilled prime bison steak with sweet pineapple sauce, garlic, white wine & butter, served with fries & garnished with rocket & strips of red pepper.

Zumba Fitness® is like no other workout you will ever experience! Zumba Fitness® was created in the mid-90s by Colombian native Alberto “Beto” Perez, a celebrity fitness trainer and choreographer for International pop superstars. Since Beto brought Zumba Fitness® to the US in 1999, it has become one of the fastest-growing, dance-based fitness crazes in the country, with people of all ages falling in love with its infectious music, easy-to-follow dance moves, and body-beautifying benefits.

SNOW

JOKE eaW takes a visit to the Snow Centre at Hemel Hempstead to experience the fun of indoor skiing and boarding. eaW magazine visited the Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead in December of last year with a few young friends to experience the thrills of indoor skiing and snow boarding. After a very smooth booking in service with young Adele on reception, our young winter sport enthusiasts: Beth Harford 11, Emily Harford 18, Molly Neville 13 and Grace Neville 11, joined eaW magazine publisher Mark Neville for a 2 hour session on the slopes.

New Snowboarder Emily

Grace Beth and

With Emily trying Snow Boarding for the first time her pre-booked lesson started on time and along with fellow newbees, Emily proceeded to the bottom of the beginner slope to meet her instructor. We asked Emily what her experience was like. How did you feel the lesson went? I was really excited to try boarding for the first time and although I live over in Essex, I was keen to travel to Hemel to learn on real snow. eaW magazine told us about the Snow Centre and I got my Dad to book the lesson. It was brilliant on the snow and I took to it really well. The people were great and the instructor was really helpful. I will definitely come back and hopefully I can use my experience on holiday this year as I didn’t really want to start as a beginner in Switzerland. I can now do the basics and I will be back at the Snow Centre to learn how to use the lifts before our holiday.

With Emily finding her balance over on the beginners slope the two younger girls were quickly on ski’s and enjoying the runs down. Grace and Beth, who incidentally both play for Arsenal Ladies U13s, are natural athletes and have been skiing since they were younger. We asked both girls what is was like at the top looking down the slope. Grace: I have been here before last year and all you want to do is get to the top and fly off to get to the bottom. Me and Beth followed each other down and we found a little jump that was wicked. Beth: Coming off the drag lift and seeing everyone getting ready to start their runs down was quite exciting. I loved the bumps in the slope and when we found the jump at the bottom we kept heading for it every time. Of course, the girls were careful and certainly not reckless as the Piste Patrol at Hemel is second to none. Overall the party really enjoyed their time at the Snow Centre and as the slopes are well managed and easy to use for beginners and experienced skiers it is a place that eaW recommend to visit during the long winter evenings. Even if a winter holiday is out of the budget this year, what better way to experience the natural conditions of real snow in a real winter sport environment. SWIMMING NEWS HODDESDON SC GAIN PROMOTION TO DIVISION 1

SPECIAL OLYMPIANS CELEBRATE A YEAR OF SPORTING SUCCESS

HODDESDON team travelled to Hatfield for the final round of the National Arena Swimming League, Division Two (London Region) which took place on Saturday 10th December at the Herts Sports Village. The highest scoring teams from the previous two rounds come together to challenge for the trophy in the final round and the top two teams in the league then gain promotion into Division One. Hoddesdon Team fielded their strongest team with the intention of finishing as high as possible in the League and with the ultimate goal of promotion to Division One.

SPECIAL Olympians (East Herts) each received a trophy of recognition for their achievements within sport at their presentation awards evening on Monday 5th December at Amwell View School and Specialist Sports College, Stanstead Abbotts. Three sports: Athletics, Swimming and Football have thriving clubs who train regularly and their members compete across the country at the Special Olympics events.

Once again it was Hoddesdon’s strength in depth that secured second place overall after a tense and exciting battle with St Pauls. Many other clubs achieved the same number of firsts as Hoddesdon, but no other team came close to the number of second and third placings. Team Manager Mary Wright told eaW “This result underlines how important team effort is in a gala. The Hoddesdon swimmers at every level gave their best. It has been my pleasure to manage such a positive and talented team of swimmers for the Arena League.”

A BRIGHTER FUTURE FOR ENFIELD SWIMMING

The charity, Special Olympics East Herts (SOEH), wants to develop and grow the opportunities within East Hertfordshire for their members and people with moderate and severe learning difficulties. The club has recently appointed a Disability Sports Development Officer, Janet Warrington. Warrington told eaW “working with the Special Olympians at Hoddesdon swimming club for the past 2 years has been so rewarding. I am now looking forward to working with other sports and local clubs to help set up regular training which will offer more opportunities for people to take part and in more sports. There are some very talented sports people within this group and they need these clubs to be able to take part, enjoy sport and achieve their full potential.” If you are interested in finding out more about Special Olympics East Herts check out their new website www.specialolympicseastherts.org.

RLSS National Pool Lifeguard Professional Qualification 8.30am – 5.30pm For age 16 years + There are big changes afoot for Enfield Swimming with a dream to create a structure that will enable Enfield swimmers to achieve success at the highest level. Edmonton Phoenix and Griffins of Enfield have come together to create a new club called Enfield Swim Squad. The two clubs will act as Houses to support the new club. It is then hoped that, with the co-operation of Fusion Lifestyle, it will be possible to create a swimming set up that will allow all levels of swimming to flourish in the Borough and create the opportunity for the most talented swimmers to go on and achieve success at National Level and beyond, something that was unlikely with the previous arrangements. Edmonton Phoenix have created a platform for success which will be carried forward into the new club. Phoenix have just had their most successful year in the National Arena League with the squad (photo) winning the B Final for the London League, The Essex League squad were crowned Division Four Champions and started their Division Three campaign with a win. We already have three National Championship qualifiers in Harry Jenner (16), Elliot Bertram (13) and Charlotte Newman (15). Twelve year old Mia Hawkes qualified for the British Championships/Olympic Trials in the 50m Freestyle setting the 5th fastest time of all time (for a 12 year old) in the British Rankings. Earlier in the year Meghan Byrne (10) was crowned Age Group Winner at the London Region Championships. These are exciting times for Enfield Swimming and we look forward to seeing the swimmers achieve their potential at every level.

Smoothie

Challenge

One competitor said - “The Smoothie Challenge was fun because we could exercise and get a healthy drink at the end. The whole class enjoyed it and it was very exciting”

Records tumbled as Fairfields Primary & Nursery School retained the ‘BIG Smoothie Challenge’ title as they defeated 6 local primary schools in the new and updated virtual competition, which is based around pedalling a bike to create a fruit smoothie and focus’s on living an active and healthy lifestyle. The ‘Big Smoothie Challenge’ is a partnership between WOW Schools of Creativity, The WOW Partnership and EAW Ltd, which allows a completely safe way for children to have fun, and pedal their 5 a day into a juicy healthy scrumptious fruit Smoothie! The project links Exercise and Healthy Eating in a fun and memorable way. The faster the children pedal the further they travel on their bike and the smoother their fruit Smoothie will be! During the 40 minute challenge workshop, each class is split into 3 teams of approximately 10 students. The bikes are static and each team member will be given one minute to pedal as fast and as far as they can. Whilst team members are waiting their turn on the bike, they complete two other stations – the “New” speed bounce challenge station and a Healthy Lifestyle Quiz station to gain extra bonus points for their team, and of course cheer on their team members! At the end of the day, all the team pack scores and bounce challenge scores are combined with the overall distance each team travelled to give a grand total for each class. This then goes towards the overall school score.

One Teacher said ““The additions to the Smoothie Challenge made it even more inclusive enabling all children to participate. The children learnt the value of effort and teamwork.”

Record Breakers Andrew

s Lane - Year 6

Natalie Mills of Wow Schools said – “Once again, the challenge created a fantastic atmosphere and we hope it continues to inspire children to lead a fun healthy lifestyle enjoying physical exercise and a good diet, especially as 2012 is going to be a such a big year in terms of sport for this country. The effort, energy and enthusiasm of the students has been fantastic and along the way we have also been impressed with performances of team songs, raps and poems all about fruit and exercise.” “By adding the new stations and an additional bike, it means that the children were able to be active for longer during the challenge and more points were up for grabs”. Our sponsors eaW limited commented ‘we are delighted to be associated with such an energetic and educational ongoing project and we wish our partners continued success!’.

Champions

Fairfields in action!

The challenge is unique, as it enables the children to compete against their own class mates, other years in their school and even other schools within the local area, with lots of prizes up for grabs. The Individual School Winners trophies, Year Group trophies and of course the overall prizes were fiercely contested with Fairfields scoring 14,589 points overall to retain the champions prize, Bonneygrove were second with 12,609 points and Flamstead End finished in third place with 11,542.5 points. In addition to record points scores, Andrews Lane Primary & Nursery School’s Year 6 Class recorded a record distance for an individual class of 14.76 KM, a fantastic achievement.

The ‘BIG Smoothie Challenge’ will be off to other local schools this year as it branches out in to Bishop’s Stortford, Harpenden and Stevenage.

Flash, Bang, Wallop! eaW interviews Henry Jacobs, the successful Press & Publicity photographer from Haringey, who is celebrating 40 years in the business.

Henry at the Tottenham Royal Dance Hall with Suzanne Dando, left (former Olympic gymnast) and Brian Jacks, right (former Olympic Judo star).

What was the industry like when you started? When I started work everybody found a job. They ranged from darkroom printers, trainee and assistant photographers up to very senior positions across the field of social, commercial, industrial, advertising, medical, government and cruise liner work Compared with today it is hard to imagine how much work there was. Who was your first main employer? I got my job through the schools’ job advisory service. I was asked what I was interested in, and when I said photography, I was told there was a job as a trainee in the photographic department of Harris Lebus furniture factory in Ferry Lane, Tottenham (now the site of the Ferry Lane Estate). I luckily came under the care of an outstanding photographer and born teacher Bill Turner, who taught me almost as much as I later learned at the Regent Street Polytechnic. I stayed there for 4 years until I was made redundant, as the factory closed down. I was sorry to leave.

Tag Rugby at the London Youth Games, Crystal Palace

What was your most memorable shoot? I was fortunate to be selected as one of the ‘Royal Rota’ photographers when Diana Princess of Wales opened a Centre for in Markfield Park, Tottenham for disabled children and their families. I remember Diana speaking to me, which I was quite unprepared for. I have also photographed the Queen and was a press photographer at Wimbledon in 1992. I shot Joe Bugner beating John Dino Denis at Alexandra Palace in 1983. I was that close that I could practically feel the knockout punch, and to be not just ringside, but shooting under the ropes, is very memorable. What do you put the success of your 40 years in the business down to? Right from the start I prided myself on not simply doing the best work I could, but listening to the client and making sure to cover the assignment as they wanted. I may make suggestions, but I pay the closest attention to what I am asked to do. Reliability, speed of delivery, discretion at events, being friendly and outgoing, and my CRB certification have all been crucial. What was your worst moment? At the indoor Cricket Centre in Bruce Grove Tottenham, I was hit by a cricket ball batted by Ian Botham. Luckily it hit the top of my flashgun, inches from my head, but the impact knocked me flying. Also I asked for the Head Boy and Head Girl at a prestigious boys only school founders day event. The Headmaster and ermine clad Governers were not impressed!

Daley Thompson, two time Decathlon Olympic Gold Medallist and four time World Record holder

How has sports photography changed over the years? The big difference came with the change over from film to digital. In the days of film you had 36 shots on a roll of 35mm film, and that was it. Modern cameras can also take superb low-light photos, where at one time it was tough to get any sort of decent image. I think it is getting much harder for the average photographer to make a living out of sports photography. There are many more photographers all chasing a shrinking market. Budgets have been slashed due to the recession. Those at the top of their game are better placed, but the economy problems are felt throughout the industry. What is your favourite part of sports photography? Working with young people, in particular at the London Youth Games, is a rewarding job. There is excitement coupled with good sportsmanship and some remarkably good performances. Boys and girls basketball is a joy to watch.

Who has been the hardest to shoot? Steve (Hurricane) Higgins. Although I was invited (as were other members of the press) to a snooker club in North London, his minder thought otherwise, and I came close to being ejected after about 2 minutes. I never found out why! What events have stuck in your memory? Photographing the Chinese Table Tennis Team at the former Picketts Lock Centre, Edmonton. The ball was repeatedly thrown up about 20 foot in the air, and the skill of the players was breathtaking. And what now? Another 40 years? While the work is available and people want me, bring it on!

PERFORMING ARTS

A Dance company that’s Absolutely fantastic! eaW magazine visited Absolute Dance in December to see what goes on behind the doors of the new premises in Bush Hill Park. We posed several questions at Owner and Principle teacher Joanne Mason. Here’s what Joanne had to say. After visiting you in December I was impressed with the venue. Why did you choose to open Absolute Dance in Bush Hill Park? To be honest, an opportunity came up to take on a new office in a great location next to the train station and bus stop in Bush Hill Park, so it grabbed it with both hands! What makes you so proud about Absolute Dance and what you have achieved? I am extremely proud of what I have achieved in the last 4 terms. Having worked for other dance schools since 2003 I knew what worked and what didn’t. Parents would often come up to me (as the teacher) and complain about things that they were having problems with but as I wasn’t the principal I was unable to make the necessary changes. I have taught ballet classes that have 33 12-15yr olds in, for me teaching dance is a passion and I can not teach classes of that size, I wasn’t able to focus on the students as individuals. It was this that really made me decide to open Absolute Dance. I have a brand new purpose built dance studio, I teach RAD ballet, ISTD Tap Modern & Disco Ducks as well as Street Jazz and Zumba all for kids and adults. I have a

capped number of students in each class which allows me and my teaching assistants to really see and work with each students individually. I am very proud to say that this is working and that it is clearly something parents want, after all they’re playing for their children to learn and to have fun, not to be lost in a crowd of 33 students! What would be the main message you would like to send to new parents of budding dancers? It’s a great way to come enjoy yourself learning something new and keeping fit. It thoroughly rewarding for me as a teacher to see the improvements that are being made all the time. I teach a real variety of classes and students, and you really don’t have to be a prima ballerina or Fred Astaire to join us at Absolute Dance. If you were not running Absolute Dance what would you be doing? If I wasn’t running absolute Dance I would no doubt be a full time mummy to my 2 gorgeous children, Cailey 20 mths & Logan 8mths. I know I’ve got my hands full, but Dance is my Passion and my children are my world. I need both in my life, I couldn’t

do it without my mum’s help as with my husband in the army I rely on her a lot of the time to have the children whilst I’m at work the 3 evenings a week and all day Saturday. Of course if Daddy is around then he has the kids, but as he is very busy too running his own business on top of working in the army it’s nice for him to spend a bit of time with them too. What is the most important thing you need to continue to do to ensure Absolute Dance

grows as a business? The next thing that I am looking for would be my own commercial property either an established dance studio or somewhere that I could convert. I’ve set my sights high and want my own place. In order to take Absolute Dance to where I know it has the potential to go, of course this I would like as soon as possible but with Absolute Dance being a new business I will have to be patient and wait for the right time (and money!) For the immediate future I just need the school to continue to grow as it is doing and I’m happy. What is your favourite style of dancing and why? I love Tap, I love the sound and knowing that I making the sound, I love the rhythms and tones that can be made, I love to try new styles out, American Tap is particular favourite of mine as it’s so relaxed and easy looking but yet so hard to do well. People in the area know me as a Ballet Girl (my nickname at college was Darcy 1!), having studied for my teaching qualifications with The Royal Ballet School I guess I am but my heart is in all styles really as I was trained in everything.
