ROUNDUP
We all received the shock news last week that RJay Berra one of our imports has transferred over to the Edinburgh Capitals in a move that would have been hard for any progressing player to be able to resist. RJay scored 54 points in 21 games for the Hawks and will be sorely missed by team and fans alike. We wish RJay and Jesslyn all the best for the future. #onceahawk Whitley Warriors have now joined us in qualifying for the playoffs. Whitley have always looked like our closest rivals after the Solway Sharks have fallen away over the past couple of seasons, this after being the team to beat in previous seasons including winning the treble in 2014. It just shows how competitive our league is and as we head to over to Sheffield in May to play for the spoils it’s fair to remember that Whitley and Solihull are two teams that have already beaten us this season. Neither will be there to just make up the numbers. We need every fan there to shout encouragement for our lads. #COYH Sutton Sting away was our match on Sunday 14th February and I will leave it to Graham Lomax to explain to you why there are no photos posted from the match from me. It was a well drilled and disciplined Hawks team that walked away with a 7 - 0 win. We now have four remaining league matches and four cup matches. We would love to see you come along to the remaining matches to help support the Hawks as these can be some of the most emotional and spectacular matches of the season. Have a look on our Supporters Club Facebook page for details of coach travel or contact hawkstravel@outlook.com to check for availability. You can drive or car share too. The more the merrier. Thanks..

OUR GUESTS FOR TONIGHT THE SOLWAY SHARKS PUT UP A GREAT FIGHT IN JANUARY BEATING US ON THE ROAD 5 - 3 WE WONDER IF THEIR EFFORTS TONIGHT WILL BE JUST AS HARD FOUGHT IN CHASING ONE OF THE TWO REMAINING PLAYOFF PLACES. WILL THE SHARKS BE PULLING OUT THE STOPS AND JOINING US THIS YEAR? IT’S HEATING UP AS WHITLEY HAVE NOW MADE THE GRADE AND ARE JOINING US AND THE SOLIHULL BARON’S SEEM TO BE RIGHT ON THEIR HEELS.
Good evening everyone and a warm welcome to our visitors from North of the border, the Solway Sharks. I suppose I’d better start with the departure of our Import Rjay Berra? Well, in all fairness we couldn’t stand in his way, if the opportunity arose for any player to play in the Elite League you’d expect them to jump at the chance wouldn’t you? And Rjay was no different, you can’t blame him he’s a young man looking to make a name for himself in our sport and this gives him an ideal platform to put himself in the shop window. Yes we could have stopped it happening but that would have been very unfair of us, and let’s be honest here he’s been the ultimate professional whilst he’s been with us. Like I just said the opportunity to train and play with professionals every day is a chance no one can turn down, and he leaves with our full blessing and support. Who knows what the future holds? Does this affect our chances of
Silverware? Well time will tell, he has been right up there with the points this season and we cannot bring in a replacement at this stage, but what it does do is give someone else the opportunity to step up and make a name for themselves. Last weekend was a massive test for us against a team who in all honesty are probably the form side at the moment, and their recent results have reflected this. So how would we cope without one of our Imports, it was a “Very Well” I have to say, I was very impressed with the overall team performance and it looks good going forward. I mentioned a few weeks back I may have to tamper with the lines a little bit, and that’s exactly what I’ve had to do. It’s the last leg now and we are still in position “A”, (where everyone else would like to be). It was nice this week to see a lot of reminders on Social Media of what happened exactly a year ago, and The Club clinching it’s first title in it’s 25 year history, well hopefully

we can make it two titles as we head down the home straight, we have a few cup games coming up so that could help us tinker a wee bit and have a look at ourselves as we set up the final push. 11 REWIND OLDSCHOOL
LOOKING BACK AT BLACKHAWKS NETMINDERS John Dunford began his hockey with the Blackpool Seagulls in the Southern League Midland Division and was part of the team that won two English League North title in a row in 1980/81 and 81/82. He was in the Seagulls team that played in the first ever British Championship weekend at Streatham in April 1982 where they lost in the semi-final to eventual overall champions Dundee Rockets 16-4. Dunford arrived at Blackburn for the Blackhawks’ first season via Trafford Metros where he had been top choice netminder for 4 seasons in HBL1. Team manager Keith Purvis explains how that came about: “John was a good, reliable Netminder, which were in fairly short supply in the North West at that time. I’d known him from his time at Blackpool and had already managed to get him to come to play at Altrincham, so cutting his travelling time dramatically to ice at Blackburn was no problem at all.”
John Dunford (Photo Walter Baylis)
Darryl Kenyon played with Dunford at Blackpool said: “Johnno was often mentioned as one of the best British goalies in the country - totally committed to the game and the position. My dad (Bob Kenyon) said of him once: “he’s an amateur player with a professional attitude to the game”. The last line of defence but you’d be confident as a team with him there. He was and still is a great goalie, great to watch and learn from. He taught me the position when I first started and owe him for that. A genuine, nice, guy too and very funny in the dressing room. Not very loud, but when he talks you listen.” Dunford played in the Blackhawks’ first ever game and made 64 competitive starts over two seasons. He made just one appearance in the 92/93 season as the Steve Moria regime brought in new blood and Paul Hannant took over as first choice netminder. John stepped down from first class hockey but has remained closely involved in the game ever since. He is the father of former Hawk and current Blackburn Eagle Sam Dunford.

12 REWIND OLDSCHOOL
Paul Hannant learnt his hockey at Whitley Bay but only made his first senior appearances when he moved to Peterborough Pirates in 1987 where he played 5 games in the Norwich Union Cup and HBLP. After spells mainly as back-up netminder with Telford Tigers and Trafford Metros in HBL1 and Solihull Barons (HBLP), Paul was brought to Blackburn by new player coach Steve Moria for the 92/93 season and it was here that he finally made a niche for himself. He said: “Wayne Dunn told me the Hawks where after a net minder and that Mo had just took over the club - so who wouldn’t want to play at what was one of the best rinks in the country at the time with one of the best imports I’ve ever seen play in the UK..? JPaul Hannant With teammate Wayne Dunn
My main memories of playing there was the 93/94 season. We were a young team with a few key players and not much depth in bodies (barely 2 lines and a couple of bench warmers). The league pretty much dismissed us at the start. Then we played MK kings in the autumn cup and destroyed them 9 -2. It wasn’t that they played bad we just gelled well on that night. That was the first of many big wins and shocks we pulled that year - only our lack of depth in bodies let us down in the end. It was a more physical style of hockey we played than they play today. We ended that season with everyone carrying at least one bad injury.” I’m also proud as punch to have been picked by the supporters to play for them in the B&H Allstars team and to be asked twice to be a Blackburn Hawks legend. In short, I loved my time at Blackburn and it has people that have a special place in my heart and memories.”
13 REWIND OLDSCHOOL
The following season Steve Moria left to join Division 1 rivals Swindon Wildcats and the Hawks underwent a season of upheaval. High profile coach Rocky Saganiuk came in mid-season and a lot of money was thrown at boosting the struggling squad. One of the newcomers was netminder Ian Young who had had a wealth of experience at HBLP level and who became first choice netminder for the latter part of the season. By the time he arrived at Blackburn, Ian Young had already notched up 14 seasons of top level hockey with home team Cleveland/Billingham, and spells with Telford, Paul Hannant at the Legends game Solihull and Humberside (Photo by Tony Greenwood - www.kippax.com) – much of that time in the HBL Premier Division. He had first hit the national headlines when, as a 17 year old in his first full senior season, he recorded the Heineken League Premier Division’s first ever shut out in a 0-11 win away at Nottingham Panthers on 22nd December 1984. Phil Lee also started off at Billingham and he said of Young: “I played with Ian at Billingham and Solihull. On his day he was one of the best British tenders I played with.” Having initially started the season back with Billingham, Ian was one of the players drafted in mid-season during the 94/95 when big name coach Rocky Saganiuk was brought in to salvage the Hawks season after a series of disasters and sackings.
14 REWIND OLDSCHOOL Young played 17 league games, sharing netminding duties with Paul Hannant and remained in place for the 95/96 season under new player coach Ryan Kummu where he alternated with hitherto unknown Canadian Horatio Schlinger. Ian McDade said of Young: “I only spent a short period of time with Ian but he had a professionalism that came from playing at the top level in the British game. A very nice fella who was consistent between the pipes. It’s no coincidence that he was goal tender the year the Hawks finished in their highest position in British Hockey”. After leading the Division One table early in the season, the Hawks eventually finished 2nd to Manchester Storm. The summer of 1996 saw the British League dissolve, the Superleague emerge and the bigger teams become awash with overseas players. The rest of the teams across the country had to reassess their financial capabilities and join lower level competitions to match their budgets. This mean that many experienced players who had played at the highest level during the British League period were squeezed out of the game and decided to hang up their skates as a consequence.

Graham Lomax is... R E X I F E TH
G
raham Lomax is the Media and PR manager for the Hawks. If you broke him in half he would read Blackburn Hawks all the way through the middle. Here are some of his thoughts from the last few weeks.
This week I’m going to talk about a few topics, including laws/ guidelines and common sense, Elite League Hockey and losing an Import. Firstly. Let’s address the “common sense issue” I’ve witnessed two events this week that have both left me shaking my head in disbelief. The first one occurred last weekend up in Sheffield when we were taking on the Sting. Now I must admit, I’m no specialist in this area, but when and where do we draw the line when it comes to photography and having permission (or not in this case) to take pictures of a hockey match in full swing that contains 18 year olds? Is this the law? Or is this Madness or Stupidity rolled into one? What’s happening here? The second episode involved myself and Four Hawks players, and a fully dressed girl getting ready for practice. As we walked into the home dressing room after taking the Youthzone session on Monday night we were greeted by a young lady, fully dressed in hockey kit. We had tracksuits and skates on, as we sat in the room next door taking off our skates we were told by a club
official, “you shouldn’t be in here, there’s a young girl next door getting changed”, Now, correct me if I’m wrong - had we have gone in there and she was in a state of undress we would have walked out, but she wasn’t, and we weren’t about to dis-robe, we were merely taking off our skates. Has the world gone completely bonkers? Now then, I’ve recently been down to Altrincham to watch our Big Brothers, The Manchester Storm, and to be fair I’ve been very impressed, by both the game itself and the crowds they now seem to be getting. The one notable thing that stood out for me was that a couple of guys playing were from other Silverblades Rinks, notably Widnes and Altrincham, but none from the Moralee League Leaders “The Hawks”, as PR and Media Man I’m going to have a few conversations with the Powers that be and see if we can forge a stronger link over the Summer and see if we can get a few of “our boys” playing Elite Hockey when the need arises (If we don’t have a game of course). How do you recover from losing one of your top points scorers and not being able to replace him? Its a very emotive subject isn’t it, but it’s one that you have to be able to see both sides. He’s a very talented young man, who’d like to play Hockey for a living, and the opportunity has arisen for him. He was always going to take the shot. Who wouldn’t? I’ve spoken with him and believe me, he was in two minds at the time as to whether or not he was doing the right thing. Only time will tell I suppose. Yes we could have stood in his way, but would that have been fair? I personally think not. I have a very simple theory in life, and it comes from experience. Never burn your bridges, you never know what the future holds. So I’d like to say on behalf of myself (because some may disagree) All the best of luck to Rjay (and Jesslyn). Thanks Guys…………….G. If you would like to join the SC team and help out there are several ways that you can get involved. Please either come over to speak to us at the supporters club table for an informal chat. No experience is required, just enthusiasm and drive. Alternatively you can fill in the form on the SC website at http://blackburnhawks.club/contact/ It really is very rewarding to be part of such a great team.

22 PLAYOFFWEEKEND
PLAYOFF WEEKEND UPDATE The play-offs are nearly upon us and the Hawks have already booked their place for the weekend of 9th and 10th of April. The Hawks will be defending their league and playoff titles from last season. We are on for the treble this year as last season we were put in with the EPL sides to pad out their season to include the cup as they did not have enough fixtures available in their season, so we had no opportunity for ourselves to take all three honours, despite this we gave them a good run for their money - even convincingly beating EPL Peterbourough Phantoms 8 - 2. This year it’s all there for the taking and we wish our lads all the very best.
WHITLEY HAVE NOW DONE ENOUGH TO JOIN US IN THE PLAYOFFS IN APRIL. TWO EAGERLY CONTESTED PLACES REMAIN AND IT’S ANYONE’S GUESS WHO WILL FILL THEM. JOIN IN THE DEBATE ON OUR SUPPORTERS CLUB FACEBOOK PAGE. We will have a merchandise stall at the play-offs where we will have some playoff specific merchandise that will be announced in due time. There will also be an off the back shirt card and a 50/50 Raffle. Please check back as this page will be updated throughout the rest of the season with any new news or details. Teams with their place booked for the playoff finals so far..
BLACKBURN HAWKS WHITLEY WARRIORS
26 ICEHOCKEYREVIEW
It was a bad weekend for IceSheffield as all 3 Moralee Conference games played there at the weekend resulted in away wins for the visitors. On Saturday 4th place Telford Tigers beat bottom team Sheffield Senators 2-8 for what was the Sheffield side’s 25th consecutive defeat. With just 7 games left and a deficit of 21 points, the Senators are already resigned to finishing bottom of the pile and just above them are Sheffield Spartans who lost 1-2 to Whitley Warriors on Sunday. That game ended in farcical circumstances as it was stopped with over 2 minutes left to play because of a blood spillage on the ice. In the following encounter on the bill, league leaders Blackburn Hawks easily disposed of 4th from bottom Sutton Sting by 7 goals to 0. Those results mean that, heading into the final straight, the Hawks still lead the table by 7 clear points although second place Whitley have two games in hand. The first league title of the 2015/16 season was decided On Sunday night as Deeside
Dragons picked up a 7-7 draw away at nearest neighbours and second-placed contenders Widnes Wild to secure the NIHL North 2 Laidler Conference crown for the first time. Following a 10-3 home win over Hull Jets the night before, the Dragons merely needed to avoid defeat. A huge crowd of over 700 watched a thrilling game that saw the Wild take a 3-1 lead into the first break only to be overhauled by the title chasing Dragons who made it 4-5 after two periods. A 3-2 period for the Wild with the GTG goal coming just over a minute to go left the nerves on edge and Dragons’ fans reaching for their calculators to see if the result was enough to hand them the title. Widnes are favourites to take second place and contest the home and away Promotion Play Off game with whoever finishes second from bottom in the Moralee Conference but they are still looking over their shoulders as third place team Nottingham Lions – who won 1-2 away at Altrincham Aces - could still catch them.
27 ICEHOCKEYREVIEW The other Laidler game of the weekend saw Blackburn Eagles notch up a 10-3 win over strugglers Coventry Blaze. That result leaves them clear in 4th place and 6 points clear of 5th place Altrincham Aces in the battle for the final play off spot.
