Garden Tea Party To Feature Pretty Pots By Dayna M. Reidenouer

Upon hearing about a menu that includes cucumber mint sandwiches on white bread, ham salad puffs, almond chicken salad on rye or marbled bread, egg-and-olive salad on wheat bread, glazed nuts, white chocolate-dipped apricots, dates filled with peanut butter, pretzel flowers, seasoned oyster crackers, graham cracker bars, a crudité platter, lemon truffles, miniature coconut cupcakes, miniature fruit pizzas, chocolate mousse tarts, and miniature snickerdoodle cookies, one might think that the food is the star of the garden tea party set for 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 5, at Wesley United Methodist Church, 40 W. Main St., Strasburg. However, the tea party is only the first part of the event. Putting the “garden” into the party will be Christine

Abel, a Master Gardener and a professional designer of container gardens and potted plants. Abel will give a presentation on assembling flower pots, with an emphasis on summer-loving plants. Abel said she is hoping that attendees will not hesitate to ask questions as she goes along. Some of the topics Abel plans to discuss include the nuances of light, watering, some of her favorite tools, soil types, fertilizer, and deadheading. She will provide a handout with important information, and she will also demonstrate planting techniques. “My strategy is ‘never see the soil’ (when filling a container),” Abel said. Container garden design is a second career for Abel, who had worked for a telephone company in Lancaster before she and her family moved to the Southern End about two decades ago. Unfamiliar with the area, Abel took some See Garden Tea Party pg 8

Orchestra, Mandolin Duo Will Perform Calvary Baptist To Host “Passion: The Musical” Piercing Word will present the drama “Passion: The Musical” at Calvary Baptist Church, 530 Milton Road, Lancaster, on Good Friday, April 19, at 6 p.m. “This is a powerful presentation of the Gospel and how Jesus fulfills everything written about Him in the Old Testament,” said Piercing Word artistic

director Caleb Hughes. “We’ve framed the piece with a modern-day, urban concept that offers a compelling perspective on the Last Supper, trial, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. The beauty of the music and the truth of the words combine to create a powerful piece.” See Calvary Baptist Church pg 9

The readings will be held each day at 2 p.m. from Monday, April 15, through Friday, April 19, in Steinman Hall at Moravian Manor, 300 W. Lemon St., Lititz, joining with chaplain Rich Thierolf and the residents there. Holy Communion will be celebrated as part of the

Maundy Thursday service on April 18. The Good Friday service on April 19 will include the tolling of a bell for each year of Christ’s life on earth. An Easter sunrise service will be held on Sunday, April 21, at 6 a.m. in the Milton Grove Cemetery in Elizabethtown off the Rheems/Elizabethtown exit of Route 283. The service will be conducted on the site of the former Donegal Moravian Church, established in 1756

and later destroyed by fire. Those who attend will have the option of enjoying breakfast at a local restaurant following the service. Easter worship will begin at 10 a.m. in the Lancaster Moravian sanctuary. The service will include special music. natural resource conservation in Lancaster County at its 68th awards banquet. Sara Xenophon, Kristen Kyler, and JenThe Lancaster County Conservation nifer Fetter, staff members of the Penn District recently recognized efforts in State Ag and the Environment Center,

were honored as valuable partners in countless conservation and watershed projects throughout Lancaster County. Project highlights include the Conewago Watershed Initiative, the Little Conestoga Watershed Partnership, and the Chiques Creek Watershed Reenvisioned Project. Their work to establish a group of volunteers for tree plantings and their ability to work hand in hand with the Conservation District has improved water quality throughout the county. Lisa Hochreiter, agriculture educator at Warwick High School, received the Conservation Educator Award for her dedicated teaching, her commitment as an Envirothon adviser, and her support of student projects helping the local community in watershed cleanup events, trout stocking, and tree planting in riparian buffers. Mark Layton, wildlife center manager at Refreshing Mountain Retreat Center, was recognized with the Lancaster County Youth Conservation School Service Award. For several years, Layton has given his time to instruct teenagers enrolled in the field school about the conservation of reptiles and amphibians. Hands-on experience with local native species has helped to instill an appreciation and respect for the habitat needs of a variety of species. John Haldeman, roadmaster for Rapho Township, accepted the Outstanding Low Volume Road Project Award for the township’s innovation that involved reusing a culvert pipe in the redesign of a low-volume road and in the end

improved water quality. Benton Webber, professional engineer for Lancaster Township, was awarded the Building Industry Resource Conservation Award. Through his research, review, and design, Webber partnered with an elementary school and an apartment complex to rebuild a new basin that has successfully managed stormwater and reduced runoff of 357,000 pounds of sediment that had at one time left a failing retention basin. The Conservation District honored Paula Harnish with the Conservation Service Award for her 20 years of service and her integrity in providing program support. The Outstanding Cooperator Award was presented to a dairy farmer in Caernarvon Township. The farmer has worked with the Conservation District and USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service to install a wide variety of conservation practices including a roofed manure storage, barnyard and vegetated treatment area, streambank fencing, stream cattle crossings, an improved animal trail, field contouring, and a gradient field terrace. The family milks 40 cows on a 78-acre farm.

Resurrection Catholic School principal Brenda Weaver has announced her retirement after 45 years in Catholic education. A Lancaster native, Weaver attended St. Anne School and Lancaster Catholic High School before choosing education as a career. Weaver earned a bachelor’s degree from York College in 1973 and a master’s degree in education from Millersville University in 1977. She began teaching at Our Mother of Perpetual Help School in Ephrata. In 29 years there, she taught third, fourth, and fifth grades, as well as sixth-grade language arts and

second-grade religion. She remembers teaching social studies and math, and she also recalls happy days like when she and students celebrated Thanksgiving feasts with hot dogs and other days like the time she sat on the floor in the hallway with a child who needed to be held. When she moved into school administration, she embraced the chance to work in Lancaster city. She served two years as assistant principal at Resurrection and took over as principal after the incumbent died suddenly. She has been principal at the school for 14 years.

Brandon Miller threw the last 1.2 innings, earning one strikeout. Wednesday’s 10-3 win over CV featured 12 hits with Thomas Shockey going 3-4. Taso Kovac was 2-4 with 4 RBI and Eckman was 2-3. CV broke on top with two in the first but L-S came back with single runs in each of the first three innings before plating two in the fifth and five in what proved to be their last at bat, the sixth inning. Aaron Snyder picked up the win with eight strikeouts and two walks over five innings. Holmes pitched the last two frames, striking out two and walking one. Friday the team traveled to Quarryville in the rain and came home after two innings and a 4-0 lead. That game will resume this week. In non-league play Saturday, the Pioneers scored ten runs on five hits, four walks and three errors, ending

the game with Octorara after three innings. Shockey opened Lampeter’s three run first with a leadoff homer. L-S, batting around in the third, took control with seven more runs. Karpathios opened the inning with a double and capped the scoring with a three run triple. Ryan Guyer struck out two and scattered three hits to earn the win. “Right now we need to stay focused on our team goals and take things one pitch at a time and one game at a time,” Martin added. BOYS’ LACROSSE The boys’ lacrosse team went toeto-toe with the top team in Section Two last Monday but the Lancaster Country Day/Lancaster Catholic squad extended its 5-4 first half advantage with a three goal second half and denied the Pioneers in the 8-4 victory. Down 3-2 in the first quarter, L-S played even with the visitors in the second frame but came up empty after the break. “We were out of rhythm and not running our plays,” said head coach Corey Nihlig. “We also had too many

turnovers and too many times played man down in the second half.” Connor Nolt (1a), Stewart McClain (1a), Joey Underwood and Joey Jordan each scored once Wednesday the Pioneers hosted an improved CV squad and pulled off a 6-5 overtime thriller. L-S led 3-0 at the half but gave up four third quarter goals while only scoring twice, cutting the lead to 5-4. “We struggled maintaining possession,” said Nihlig. “I don’t think we played to our potential. Jordan scored the game winner. A balanced attack featured seven different scorers with Jordan leading the way with two goals while Bryce Roberts, Logan Bradley, Nolt (2a) and Noah Patterson (2a) all scored once. On a cold and wet Friday night, L-S pushed out to a 4-3 first quarter lead over second place Ephrata but the hosting Mounts responded with a 3-1 second quarter and denied the visitors in the second half while pouring in six more goals for a 12-5 win. The Mounts improve to 6-1 overall while L-S falls to 4-3 overall and 3-2 to sit in third place in Section Two.

relay with McMichael, Luka Vranich, Harnish and Miller. TENNIS In two matches played last week the Pioneer tennis team dropped identical results. They fell 6-1 to Ephrata in Section Two play Tuesday and suffered similar results to the third place team in Section One, CV on Wednesday, dropping their overall record to 1-6. Alex Braun and Luke Kelly, with an 8-4 win over Ephrata’s Colin Zucchi and Tyler Martin, earned Lampeter’s only team point with a No. 3 doubles win. While both losses were of the same margin, Lampeter’s loss to CV was much closer. After Kelly and Braun secured another No. 3 doubles win, 8-6, the singles play was much tighter. Braeden Weaver lost 6-3 in the first set but battled in the second before coming up short 7-6. Braun’s result at No. 3, and Kelly at No. 4 suffered identical losses, falling shy 7-5 in the first set while losing 6-1 in the second. GIRLS’ LACROSSE Coming into the third week of the season, the lady Pioneers were third in the league in scoring with a 15.2 goals per game average and were ranked sixth on the defensive end, giving up 9.3 gpg. And Kelsey Kimmel was tops in the league in scoring with 41 goals. The Pioneers opened April with a solid 14-8 win over Lancaster Catholic/LCD on Monday and then came from behind to beat CV, 10-7 last Wednesday. “In both games we did a much better job with draw control and shot selection in the second half,” head coach Claudia Ovchinnikoff stated.

They stand at 5-0 overall with five shutouts. They lead the rain-soaked game against Solanco 13-4 in the fourth. “Against Solanco was the first time we had to fight from behind,” said head coach Gene Charles. The Mares scored three runs in the first inning. That game will resume this week. L-S posted identical 13-0 shutouts over Elizabethtown, last Monday, and CV two days later. Up 7-0 after three against the Bears, L-S plated six runs on six hits in the fourth to put the game away. Julz Garber was 3-4 with 2 RBI and one run scored. Cam Byler was 3-3 with 2 RBI and a double and Jocelyn Branco, with a bases loaded triple in the third, was 1-2. Brynne Baker earned the one hit win with 5K and no walks. L-S plated six runs, on five consecutive base hits, in the third inning against CV to pull away. Baker tossed a no-hitter, fanning a season-high nine of the 15 batters she faced. Garber led the way with a 3-3 day. Saturday afternoon L-S blanked Palmyra 11-0 in 4.5 innings. “They just missed districts last year and had the best pitcher we’ve faced,” noted Charles. And for the third time this week,

officially, the Pioneers put together a six run inning to take charge. The second inning highlights featured two out doubles by Peters, Baker and Byler. “We’re getting good hit production

up and down the lineup, including Jocelyn Branco in the nine slot,” said Charles. “She is hitting well.” Gabby Drumm struck out five and walked one in three innings of work.

“And Mary Pettica played a stronger second half in both games as well. She had 11 of her saves against LCDS in the second half and 10 of her 13 against CV came in the second half.” Tied at 4-4 in the first half against LCHS/LCD, the Pioneers picked it up a notch after the break, outscoring the hosts 10-4 to pull away. Kimmel continued to pace the Pioneers on the offensive end, piling up five goals. McKenna Conklin netted a hat trick and Malaina Bauzon added two goals. Brittney Zameroski (2a), Katelyn Smith, Kelliann Drummond and Emma Gochenaur (1a) contributed with one goal each. Two days later, the Pioneers found themselves in a much tighter contest against CV. Down 6-4 at the half, L-S turned things around with a dominating 6-1 second half to pull off the three goal win. Kimmel collected another five goal outing but was almost matched by CV’s leading scorer, Abigial Morley (31 goals) who finished with four. They were the only multi goal scorers in the game. Zameroski (1a), Smith, Conklin (1a), Drummond and Gochenaur chipped in with one goal each. SOFTBALL Five games, well actually 5.5, into the season, the softball team has yet to play a full seven inning game. And prior to Friday’s rain-delay against Solanco, they hadn’t given up a run.

McClain netted two goals for L-S with Jordan, Nolt (1a) and Bradley each adding one. In goal Dom Reed collected ten more saves and finished with 22 total on the week. TRACK With contributions up and down the lineup, the veteran Lady Pioneers dominated a youthful Solanco squad 117-33 last Monday afternoon on their home track. The Pioneers won all but four events and swept the field in six events to pull away. Lauren Gard led a sweep in both the 110 hurdles (with Bella Howells and Harnish) and the 300’s (with Harnish and Danielle Dipace) while Colleen Gilbert, who anchored the winning 3200 relay (Sara Boyd, Dyla Drouillard, Tonna Harnish), led sweeps in the 800 (with Elizabeth Deodorff and Harnish) and the 3200 (with Godfrey and Brooke Smith). In the field it was Kristin Herr leading a sweep in the discus (with Howell and Vidal) and winning the javelin (134-8). She also ran the first leg of the winning 4x100 relay with Elli Strauss, Lindsay Szymanski and Toby Harnish. And Alexis Moran led a sweep in the triple jump (with Nickle and Hoke). Other first place winners include Boyd in the mile (6:05.5), Kathry Sigafous in the 400 (66.0), Lily Hoke in the high jump (5-0), Cameron Coleman in the pole vault (7-6) and Strauss in the long jump (15-6.5). The boys’ team only swept three events but won all but three races and two of three relays in a lopsided 113-37 final. Ezra Mellinger was the top pointgetter in this one, winning the 100 (10.7), the 200 (21.7), and the long jump (24-1). He also teamed with Josh Horst, Jacob Kipelman and Tyler Littler to win the 400 relay. Josiah Zehr was also a triple winner in individual events. He was tops in the 110 high hurdles (15.4), the 300’s (41.1) and led a sweep in the pole vault (with Caleb Bruner and Jansen Miller). School Announces Changes More than four years ago, Lancaster Mennonite (LM) School and Hershey Christian School entered into negotiations and a planning process for LM to acquire Hershey Christian. The enrollment at the Hershey campus of LM has been tenuous since the acquisition. After four years of operation, the LM board of directors, finance committee and administration unanimously agreed that sustainability of the Hershey campus of LM is no longer viable due to enrollment decline. LM has experienced enrollment decline for more than 10 years and is in the process of creating a sustainable financial model for the future. LM will be transitioning two campuses. Kraybill will operate independently as of Monday, July 1, and Hershey will close at the end of the 2018-19 school year. LM will also reduce staff at other campuses. This consolidation effort

reduces the amount of square footage maintained compared to student enrollment numbers. The model for the future includes an endowment that creates a foundation for New Danville (ND), Locust Grove (LG), Lancaster Mennonite Middle School (LMMS), and Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMH). The current cash endowment is $9 million, with an additional $3 million in non-school properties. Endowment reserves remain strong and in place, preserving ND, LG, LMMS, and LMH campuses. Each campus is moving toward a stronger independent financial health position, yet remaining part of the larger LM system. LM is implementing a science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) focus system-wide. On the elementary level, MakerSpaces are part of ND and will be part of the LG campus curricula in

Aaron’s Acres Seeks Facility Aaron’s Acres is searching for a year-round facility to accommodate its growing programs. A nonprofit organization in central Pennsylvania, Aaron’s Acres provides individuals with developmental disabilities ages 5 through 21 year-round, therapeutically based, age-appropriate recreational programs focused on enhancing socialization and communication skills. The search comes after the announcement of the Manheim Community Pool’s potential 2020 close. Aaron’s Acres has based its programs at the pool for the past five years, and pools have been a staple of Aaron’s Acres’ programs since the organization’s start in 1998. The programs focus on including all participants in every activity regardless of ability level, meaning the organization has special

requirements for a future facility. In addition, Aaron’s Acres hopes to consolidate its current facilities, including administrative offices and storage units, which are scattered across Lancaster County. The nonprofit is open to either developing a new building or repurposing an existing site. During Aaron’s Acres’ 20th anniversary gala in December 2018, the organization unveiled conceptual designs for its future facility, but the group remains open to discussion. The project is estimated to cost between $4 million and $5 million. Aaron’s Acres is seeking the public’s help in its search for a new location. To help, readers may call Aaron’s Acres’ Lancaster office at 717-917-6101. More information can be found at www.aaronsacres.org.

LMC’s international partner delegates gathered with both LMC and EMM staff at Mennonite Central Committee’s Welcoming Place in Akron for an initial orientation on Feb. 15 and 16. Participants included (from left) Joe and Yvonne Garber, Gerry Keener, Steve Shank, Judy and Bill Houser, Keith Weaver, Leon Zimmerman, Glenn Kauffman, Steve and Beth Gibbs, and Tom Eshleman. June Kauffman (not pictured) is also a delegate.

MON. APRIL 15, 2019 – 2PM

ARRIVING LATE?

MONDAY, APRIL 15 • 9 A.M.

E WE

The delegate role involves maintaining regular communication with the partner, working with relevant EMM staff for joint trips, attending significant events of the partner, engaging with a new generation of the partner church’s leaders, coordinating visits to LMC regions from partners, and additional tasks. While delegates bring a wealth of relational value to these global relationships, they do not make decisions on financial matters. Instead, their primary functions are to listen and engage with faith, discipleship, and church life issues pertaining to LMC and the partner. Serving as volunteers for renewable five-year terms, delegates are formally appointed by LMC, but the discernment process may include insight from EMM staff and leadership of the partner church. Tom Eshleman, the pastor of Groffdale Mennonite Church, serves as LMC’s global delegate, relating to international partners and overseeing the new international partner delegate system. International partner delegates are encouraged to raise their own funds for expenses. LMC also contacts the delegates’ church districts and other supporters to request funding. As funds are received, LMC manages the financial accounts for each delegate. On Feb. 15 and 16, the current delegates gathered with both LMC and Eastern Mennonite Missions (EMM) staff at Mennonite Central Committee’s Welcoming Place in Akron for an initial orientation. EMM staff provided resourcing for the orientation, covering topics such as ministry philosophies, histories of respective partners, missiological and anthropological resources, and pragmatic education on international partnerships.

IS TH

LMC - A Fellowship of Anabaptist Churches has announced a new international partner delegate system aimed at building stronger relationships among groups in the global church. This approach responds to a call for direct involvement by more leaders, along with a more defined framework to facilitate these connections. LMC plans to assign a person or couple to each area where the organization has global relationships. Currently, delegates have been assigned to four partners. The pairings are Glenn and June Kauffman with Conference of Mennonite Churches in Hong Kong, Bill and Judy Houser with Iglesia Evangélica Menonita de Belice, Steve and Beth Gibbs with Iglesia Evangélica Menonita del Perú, and Joe and Yvonne Garber with Kanisa la Mennonite Tanzania. LMC currently identifies a total of 23 countries where partners are located. Many of these partners have a connection with LMC through mission work led by Eastern Mennonite Missions (EMM). Historically, LMC fraternal bishops would provide a connection to these partners. In 2018, Mennonite World Conference (MWC) officially accepted LMC as a full member. However, LMC still sees a need to focus on specific relationships with its international partners. According to LMC, there is a diminishing presence of EMM workers among many of these partners, less connection with fraternal bishops, and fewer administrator visits from EMM’s Central Administrative Office, meaning there is a need to find new ways to strengthen the LMCto-national church relationships. LMC’s delegates will begin relating to those partner churches that are now autonomous.
