WELCOME to the Cumbria Sports and Events Guide It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the first issue of Cumbria Sports and Events Guide. It has been a long road to get to where we are today and we thank you for purchasing the first of many issues. I joined Eden FM Radio early in 2014, excited at the prospect of co-hosting my very own radio show Eden FM Sport with Martin Cowin. After a few shows and the chance to settle in at Eden FM, the idea of a sports magazine was suggested by now my co-editor Lee Quinn, Chairman/ Director of Eden FM Radio. As a local sports fanatic I couldn’t wait to get started as I knew a publication like this would offer many sports clubs a chance to appear in local media. Something they may have struggled with previously in getting a line or a photo published. The Cumbria Sports and Events Guide gives sports clubs, sports fans, societies, various associations and organisations the opportunity and chance to voice their own stories in their own way. It’s not all about press releases here, just great stories, written by great people from many great organisations. It is a chance to celebrate the best of our county and raise the profile of all the different things going on in our area. Who knew Cumbria was home to one of the best baseball teams in the UK? I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to the magazine, the clubs who have provided us with articles, the companies who have placed adverts in the magazine, the outlets who will be selling the magazine and the support I have received from my fiancée Kim. My final thanks goes to the Cumbria Sports and Events team, who have put in endless hours into ensuring we had the magazine ready. None of this would have been possible without any of you.

Your local Cumbria SsangYong Dealership

Of course we don’t just stop here. Work has already started on the second issue of the magazine and we want to feature your clubs, teams, events, shows and gigs in there. If you are interested in featuring in future issues please contact us via one of the following methods.

Cumbria Do we need a regional Sports Sports&Events Guide and Events publication for all?

We have i phones, i-pads, note pads, memory sticks, unlimited channels on the TV or PC or laptop. The need for information, to tweet, to Facebook, to do selfies. Do we actually print off photographs and put them in a family album or do we hope that the next generation might just skip a generation or two next time they up grade and push the wrong button?

to mention that, with regards to this magazine you are now reading, he is the driving force behind it. I do ideas, yes I started with football and Rugby match day programmes, played a bit of football all my life since I could kick a ball and whilst I can walk I will still kick a ball. Sport for many is a way of life, its hope, its discipline, its vision, its ambition, it makes you nervous, makes you hot, makes you cold, its makes you strong, it makes you weak, it will make you happy and it will make you cry. Whether you are competing, you’re a parent, a grandparent, a coach, a friend, a manager, a teacher, a budding photographer, a sports person at the height of their career, or importantly the club secretary you are caught in a passion of believe.

There is a world out there and it is at our finger tips, the process of actually checking out what is going on just up the road, a walk down to the local sports field, come rain or shine, is the roots of what you might be looking for in years to come on whatever gadget you choose to view sport tomorrow. I met Ben, your editor, by chance one Sunday late morning, I knocked on his door and asked him to sign a petition. He wasn’t really in the right mood, who would be on a Sunday morning, when he confessed later whilst he was in his dressing gown on the doorstep that was all he had on.

All generations, on the field, off the field, on the track, on the court, in the stand or collecting the subs, writing the match reports, tweeting and Facebooking, selling raffle tickets, raising funds. This publications is, and all that follow, dedicated to you.

Sorry Ben it’s a great story, anyway, he gave me 5 minutes to discuss why I was knocking on his door, he then explained he heard about the project that I had been running for3 years called Eden FM and he also knew then I was responsible for having a local magazine called Cumbrian Local posted through his door every month in Penrith. Ben has pretty much described the events since then. What he has failed

[ Cumbria Wheelchair Sports Club ]

Cumbria Wheelchair Sports Club is an inclusive sports club, offering sporting opportunities for anyone from 6 years old, upwards. The club was founded in 2010 as the vision of one family, following the realisation that there were no sporting opportunities in the region for their teenage son who uses a wheelchair. From that seed of an idea, the club has grown to offer quality sporting for participants from a wide area. The club provides much needed social and sporting

opportunities for people in the North of England, Cumbria and the south of Scotland. We offer a variety of sports, to cater for all abilities, from Boccia, the paralympic sport played by many people with cerebral palsy, wheelchair tennis, and our flagship sport, wheelchair basketball. Our basketball teams play in national leagues at a variety of levels, and our teams are made up of a mix of disabled and able-bodied players; some of our players are tipped to watch for as future Team GB basketballers! We provide Team GB level coaching and sports wheelchairs are provided by the club, and are in the process of setting up a powerchair football team. Our latest exciting development is the acceptance of our Ice Curling Team by the ECA as the only English Wheelchair curling team. They play competitively and have qualified to play in the World Wheelchair Curling Qualifying Tournament in Norway in November, with a eye on the Paralympic Games 2018 as the ultimate prize.

A new attraction, or something, which when seen gives you a different perspective. The Eden Stone Emporium is now open for business. If you are wondering if this is a cluttered shop of statues and nic-nacs collecting dust from a bygone age, you would be very wrong.

“We are all delighted with Lloyd’s achievements in Rugby: gaining national honours is something to be very proud of. Lloyd joined Austin Friars St Monica’s School half-way through year 8 having NEVER played rugby before, his rise through the school teams, to 1st XV and international rugby is astonishing and a huge achievement”

An airy gallery set on two levels, displayed in such a way you have never seen stone of this quality presented. For your floor, wall, kitchen, fireplace, for furnishing or for the creation of unique pieces for indoor or outdoor use, for business, pleasure or leisure, sourced from around the world, bought with passion, sold with pride. The Eden Stone Emporium now resides in the Gloucester Yard behind Great Dockray in Penrith. Every display has a story behind it; the source of its origin, whether this be in the fossils embedded in this natural mineral or the path it has followed from its creation, from around the world or a local quarry in Cumbria. A lot can be learnt from a visit. If you have an idea or no idea, a slate riven finish or a honed finish, it can all be explained. Ullswater has enjoyed huge success with crosscountry this year. After winning the year 7 county event at QEGS, James Salt went on with Luke Hunter and Joe Newby to represent the county at the inter counties event against Northumberland and Durham, where James was an outstanding second and Luke Hunter 3rd. Both Luke Brown and Molly Rudkin also represented the county at their respective age groups. Luke brown has been chosen to run for Cumbria in the National championships in Derby also.

success for our cheer squad. Twenty-five girls, including our cheer captain Ellis Hope and student coach Shannon Twiddy, made their way (via a little shopping stop at the Trafford Centre!) to PGL Boreatton Park. The girls took part in four gruelling cheer training sessions, building on their fitness, stunts, motions and choreography with British Cheer Association coaches. It was a brilliant weekend and a little bit special as we said goodbye and good luck to Mrs Castle as she goes on maternity leave.

A three day rugby tour to Newcastle saw 47 year 7 and 8 boys embarking upon a weekend of rugby and cultural experiences. Newcastle Falcons premiership rugby team were our hosts on Friday afternoon with their academy coaches doing a splendid 2 hour coaching session with the boys followed by an extensive tour of the ground and question and answer session. The evening was filled watching Newcastle Eagles basketball team defeat Plymouth. Saturday morning saw 3 teams playing against Harton college where the men of the matches were Joe Kirkland, Jamie Braithwaite and Ryan Edmondson.

After winning the area finals, Ullswater’s Key Stage 3 Badminton team of Yasmin Bowness (YR9), Ellen Robinson (RE9), Alice Christy (YR7), Tara SimpsonSullivan (YR8) and Isla Souter (YR8) travelled to Liverpool to represent Cumbria in the North West Final of the National Schools Badminton Championships. The girls played matches against strong sides from St Bedes, Altrincham, Queens School and Merchant Taylor’s and scored a total of 274 points; unfortunately not enough to take them further in the competition but doing themselves and the school very proud. A particular mention must go to Alice who won 3 out of 4 of her singles matches and held her own against players 2 years older than her!

CASTLETOWN UNDER 10’s – 2013/14 SEASON

Castletown JFC under 10s section has had a very successful season. We coach 30 children currently in school year 5 from all over the Eden District. We ran 3 squads this year in the Penrith & District Junior Football League; Castletown Athletic, Dragons and United. The Athletic and Dragons squads have been together as a group at Castletown since “Nappy Squad” with Irwin Wallace. The United squad was assembled at the start of the season due to a large influx of children wanting to be part of the Castletown setup which was recently awarded Development Club of the Year by the Cumberland FA.

the cup and performed well in the league. We always look towards the future at Castletown JFC and with that in mind we are integrated our 3 successful squads into 2 for the challenge of the Under 12 league next season. For the 2nd successive year we are running a Training Boot Camp throughout the summer which will see all 30 children benefit from regular football during the closed season. At our recent End of Season Party Event we had all 30 children plus numerous family members participating in an afternoon of fun involving a Parents & Coaches game which the children refereed and numerous “Lads vs Dads” games. This was followed by a presentation event which saw the children rewarded for their efforts this season with a medal each and some individual trophies voted for by themselves, the coaches and the supporters.

All three clubs performed brilliantly over the course of the season and the children really enjoyed playing regular football at a club that strives to develop blossoming talent. The Dragons squad jointly won the Penrith & District Junior League, the Athletic squad finished runners-up in both the league and the cup and the fledgling United team (which was made up of numerous children that had never played competitive football before) reached the semi-final of

The future looks bright for this exciting group of talented youngsters, and as coaches of Castletown JFC we look forward to guiding them through it for many years to come.

[ CELTIC NATION ]

We started to get a little bit of attention because of the winning run we were on before Christmas from supporters in Carlisle and we also started to get some supporters down from Glasgow.

[ CELTIC NATION ]

Is your garage a ‘no go’ area? Is your shed bulging at the seams? Is your loft a hiding place for treasured possessions?

In February, we started another winning run and went 15 games undefeated and the Shildon game at home was a fantastic advert for the league. I could not speak highly of my team for their commitment and their strength of mentality in that game which was followed up in the derby game against Penrith.

If so, why not consider spending a little time de-cluttering and sorting through things to create some space. Have a proper spring clean, work out what you need on a regular basis and consider putting everything else into our storage facility.

The crowds kept growing and we kept breaking barriers. I'm proud of the effort of the players, the staff and how the club has grown off the pitch as well.

You could be in between moving, having some home improvements done, or faced with the challenge of scaling down your goods and chattels as you downsize your home. For commercial, domestic or legal requirements, Eden Safe Store can hold on to your treasured possessions until the time is right.

The name, Celtic Nation, makes people curious. A lot of work has been done by the club to engage the Celtic supporters who come down and enjoy the day out but the club has to grow its support in the Cumbria area and I've been delighted that when our club play at home and Carlisle United are away, we do see a rise in our support.

With flexible rates and varied space, we can provide you with the assurance that your goods are safe. Whether this is short or long term, it only takes one call to Eden Safe Store. You can deliver to our site in Appleby or we can collect and store it for you, leaving you with an inventory of goods for you to keep in a safe place.

That's football people in Carlisle who come and give us good feedback. They like the raw effort, the real commitment to win a football match. They see it, they feel it, they're really close to it.

Secure Storage for all your needs Archiving • Historical or Sensitive Data • Temporary Warehousing • Short & Long Term Storage

The beauty of it is that when they come, they want to come back.

This season’s Junior Challenge Cup winners Greystoke FC were treated to a once in a lifetime experience, when they won the chance to play a postseason exhibition at the home of Newcastle United, St James Park.

and onto the perfect playing surface. The game began nervously for Greystoke, who took time to adjust to playing on the even surface. They defended stoutly while those nerves settled, clearing a couple of corners, and then began to knock the ball about nicely. Inevitably it was at this point that they conceded the opening goal, after a mix up in the box. This really kicked Greystoke into gear, and they equalised immediately after a deft through-ball from David Ivinson was calmly finished by man of the match Jake Holden. The first half ended 1-1. After wholesale changes at half time, Greystoke began to play on the counter attack. This eventually paid dividends as a sharp team move was finished with aplomb by Newcastle fan Chris Magnay. From then on Greystoke controlled the game, and frustrated their opponents with their hard work despite the sweltering heat.

Striker Ben Dixon had entered the competition with Barclays, and won out of hundreds of entries. The opponents for the day were the Rose and Crown, South Shields. Greystoke got a feel for the pitch with a 15 minute warm up, led by their captain Karl Rinder. They returned to the changing rooms for tactical instructions from manager Mike Holliday, and then lined up in the tunnel, with music blaring from the stadium tannoy.

The game finished 2-1 and Greystoke received a signed Newcastle shirt for their victory, which will go on display at Clickham Inn. Everyone agreed, it was a day to remember for Greystoke FC.

PRESS RELEASE

May 2014

Three Lions and an Anorak: an England World Cup Quiz Odyssey ANDREW CLARK & ANITA CLARK

Synopsis of the book Three Lions and an Anorak is a light-hearted quizzing journey through the highs and lows of England’s World Cup history. Released in preparation for this summer’s finals in Brazil, the book will amuse, entertain and inform England football fans of all ages. Triumphs, tribulations, goals, gaffes and even World Cup songs – they’re all here packed into 30 themed rounds of questions that are sure to bring England World Cup memories flooding back.

Points of Interest The World Cup is set to be THE big event of the summer and Three Lions and an Anorak will enhance any England fan’s enjoyment of the tournament. And a Penrith-based business was amongst the first booksellers in the country to stock the new World Cup quiz book that has been released in time for this summer’s finals in Brazil.

The Authors ANDREW and ANITA CLARK are both experienced writers. They are also longsuffering football fans of our national team and veterans of England’s failed World Cup campaigns since 1982!

Contact details To request any additional information or images please contact: Andrew Clark via email at andrew_anita.clark@btinternet.com or telephone 01673 866260. 1 Chapter Close, Welton, Lincoln, Lincolnshire LN2 3FS

Co-author Andrew Clark commented “Wordsworth Bookshop & Coffee House have been incredible. They were one of the first bookshops to place an order and to physically stock the book. As an independent publisher it’s not easy getting shops to stock your book, and Wordsworth Bookshop’s support and encouragement has been invaluable.” The book will be an ideal companion for any England fan travelling to Brazil or will provide a perfect pre-match warm-up for those World Cup parties back home. It will also make a fantastic Father Day’s gift. To whet your appetite here’s a couple of questions from the book:  Five ‘Davids’ have played for England at a World Cup finals tournament. Can you name them?  "We didn’t underestimate them. They were just a lot better than we thought." Which England manager uttered these words of wisdom following a hard-fought World Cup quarter-final clash?

[ JOHN FOLEY ]

FROM BRIGHTON - VIA PENRITH-TO BRIGHTON I was born In Brighton East Sussex but moved to Penrith when I was two and grew up in Cumbria It's interesting that my career choices have taken me back to the county of my birth but with tougher Northern attitudes! I began a Business Studies course in Carlisle and after finishing my studies at Brighton University I decided I wanted to stay on the South Coast and try my hand at football coaching -surprisingly-after one phone call the ball started rolling (pun intended!) Having played for, what is now know as, Penrith AFC as a youth player I would never have imagined that I would be managing a senior side at the same level by the age of 25. Coaching players from the ninth tier, only a mere eight promotions from the Barclay’s Premier league, is a dream come true and hopefully I will progress to work in a Professional club at some point in my career. Although I have been coached by a number of school and club coaches, one really stands out: the legend that is the late Pete Kremer, former PE teacher at Queen Elizabeth Gramar School, Penrith. I remember that even though he was tough and expected nothing less than 100% from every player, he was highly respected and everyone wanted to play for him. That is what, in my opinion, every coach/manager should be aiming for and I believe that is part of the journey I am on.

Working along side two of my mentors, Lee Brace and Ian Hickley-Smith, I was given the opportunity to work at u18 County level with Whitehawk FC (Skrill south). I observed the way Lee managed the team and Ian’s training methods really gave me an insight into the potential for football at county youth level. I also started working for Brighton and Hove Albion’s community scheme, a role that I am still working in today. In my work for Albion I have met a number of Cumbrian’s with one from the Lakes working in a school as a PE teacher at Downlands School in Hassocks and another, from Wigton, working at St Josephs in Brighton. Lee then moved onto St Francis Rangers (County one). Joining him and the staff already there, including Kieran Collins, I was in charge of training sessions. This allowed me to experiment and work with high quality players. Midway through my second season at St Francis I moved to Plymouth, MA (USA) to become a professional youth coach. Living in the Boston area was exciting and provided an amazing opportunity (I'd recommend it to anyone) and I gained a lot of experience working with u9/u10 teams, both training and managing them in games and tournaments. After returning to the UK and St Francis I received a phone call from Lee Brace to make me aware of a position available at Worthing United and that not only had he put my name forward but I was shortlisted for the job and would be having a interview later that week. My last game as 1st team coach at St Francis was a 9-2 victory over Worthing so I knew it was a difficult job I was undertaking. In November 2013 I became Worthing United manager and in doing so became one of the youngest managers in County One history. In my time at Worthing I have worked with two

chairmen, used six different goal keepers (including my outstanding captain/centre back), often played a game without a bench and from the original team I inherited, there are now only two surviving players. Unfortunately we have been relegated and although I know there are mitigating circumstances -ultimately-I have to take personal responsibility as the buck stops with the manager. The club is in transition and looking to the future. We want to do that organically using the current crop of players, adding quality and experience as we can -obviously it's difficult to recruit to a 'failed' team but WE will be back! MIKE ELLERY Name: Mike Ellery Birth Place: Shotley Bridge Hometown: Penrith Q. When did you first discover your love for rugby? Q. When is your tournament?

A. When I was about 8, I used to go along to watch my dad's teams play at Ullswater community college... I was desperate to play.

A. Sevens is such an exciting game with the opportunity to travel the world. It also helps hone in on skills and has developed me as a rugby player! I definitely still have ambitions within 15s though.

Q. How did you progress up through the levels to eventually play for England? A. I started at Newcastle falcons, I then moved onto Moseley to play in the Greene King IPA Championship, to get some more game time at senior level. After two years there I got picked up by England Sevens.

Q. What is your greatest achievement so far in your rugby career? A. Greatest achievement has to be my England debut in Hong Kong.

Q. Could you have played for any other national team? A. Actually yes, my dad is Welsh. But I was born in England and have lived here all my life. Q. What do you love about Cumbria? A. I love the outdoor lifestyle in Cumbria, how laid back it is! Especially compared to London, as that's where I'm living now! Also how friendly everyone is up there - it's not just a myth that northerners are a lot friendlier!

PENRITH RUGBY UNION FOOTBALL CLUB All the lads are keen to dig in and work as hard as they can to get back to winning ways! As always the youth section of the club is thriving and doing everyone proud winning 4 county cups this year!

This season at Penrith Rugby Union Football Club has not been the best; we have been relegated out of National Three North and also knocked out of the county cup in the semi final! The club has had had a lot of injuries throughout the season and players work commitments have meant we couldn’t get any real momentum going as the squad was changing every week!

Over the summer the club will be having a family fun day on the 16th August, there will lots of activities for kids and a big marquee at night with a band, food and also a comedian!

Unfortunately we are now looking for a new head coach; Bill Laidlaw has left after two years in charge. His job this year has been extremely difficult considering the lack of players that were training and also the number of players being used week in week out!

It’s also the clubs second annual beer festival on the August bank holiday over three days, there will be beers, real ales, ciders and wines of all sorts so get yourselves down, last year it was a great success. That weekend will kick start the new season with a warm up game against Rossendale. This will be a great test, as they play in National North Division 3 (the league Penrith have just been relegated from.)

Moving on to next season we are looking forward to having a new coach and taking things right back to basics starting with pre season on the first week in July. Pre season will be crucial in our bid to get promoted straight back up to National Three North and we will be working on getting as fit as possible for the new season. This will not be easy, especially having 4 big derby games against Kendal, Carlisle, Kirkby Lonsdale and Wigton!

[ WHITEHAVEN RUGBY LEAGUE ]

TOP SIX FINISH FOR HAVEN ? Whitehaven Coach Dave Woods is looking for his team to nail a top six finish in 2014 - a position that seemed very achievable last campaign until a late season slump in form. Not surprisingly this season has seen a big shake up in the Haven Squad with nine new signings and thirteen departing the club in the close season. As with all clubs in this competition, the pressure will be on to improve. "It will probably be more competitive because of the restructuring that's happening the year after; teams are going to spend some money as they want to be in that top tier," said Woods. "We were in sixth place until we let ourselves down in the last few rounds last year, and we feel we have added strength to the squad this year, so Article written by Dave Farrell Cumbria

we'd like to finish in the top six somewhere." Amongst those nine new signings are a couple of names well known to fans of Super League clubs. Lee Mitchell has spent time with Warrington Wolves and Castleford Tigers, while Shaun Ainscough has been with Wigan Warriors and Bradford Bulls. "We have added some real good ones," said Woods, when talking about the newcomers. "Lee Mitchell is a really strong line runner in the back row and he adds something with his enthusiasm. Shaun Ainscough has been amongst the leading try scorers at the clubs he's played at and we're expecting a lot from him." Two other interesting signings are Tom Carr, the former York fullback, and stand-off or centre Chris Taylor, who is on a season-long loan from Wigan Warriors.

[ WHITEHAVEN RUGBY LEAGUE ] ] [ WHITEHAVEN RUGBY LEAGUE

"I'm looking forward to see Chris Taylor play more," said Woods. “we have a couple of good centres in Local Boy Scott McAvoy and PNG World Cup player Jessie Joe Parker so we are looking for someone to fill the stand-off position and he'll get the first chance at it." As for Carr? "You don't get in the top three young players unless you are doing something right - he's very good on his feet.

"Ben Milburn and Jordan Burns are young blokes who are from Kells ARLFC and have been training well and improving each week. They still have a fair bit to do but they are working well with the senior blokes. We're not expecting too much from them this year, we don't want to put pressure on them but we want them to enjoy their footie and learn each week." Whitehaven will continue their partnership agreement with St Helens, with Woods expecting one or maybe two players on long-term loan deals with some deals that will be month to month.

The 2014 Season Thus Far……

The Haven Squad has been further enhanced with the arrival recently of another Larsen Marabe who can play in the pack or centre. The experienced Lee Doran will continue leading the team from the back row while Samir Tarhoui was signed from Swinton and his size and power in the front row should give Haven a good go forward.

With a Third of the 2014 Summer Season played Haven sit 10th in The Championship and are still looking to post consistent results; they went away to Batley last week and showed just how good they could be posting a 30-12 win in Yorkshire, that after losing 34-nil at home to North Wales a week earlier. Wins over Cumbrian Rivals Barrow and Workington Town have gone down well with the Haven fans, but they need to start winning consistently if they are to make the top Nine at the end of the campaign and qualify for the Revamped Championship in 2015, effectively the Second tier of Super League.

Long serving winger Craig Calvert is taking a well deserved benefit, after joining the club form Wath Brow Hornets in 2004, and is still one of the most dangerous finishers in the Championship, while the vastly experienced Lee Doran will lead the team from the second row. But not all of the close-season signings will be rushed by Woods.

[ Monopoly - penrith & eden Valley edition ]

Penrith and Eden Valley – As the story goes, it started with a roll of the dice. It was Charles Darrow, a domestic heater salesman from Germantown, a neighbourhood in Philadelphia, who was taught to play a game by Charles Todd, who had come across it in Atlantic City. The game was simple enough, as you worked your way around the board by the roll of dice, covering 40 squares that represented the city’s street and property names. You would have to buy property in order to charge other players income in order to survive the game. Darrow decided to create his own version of the game in 1934, which he called Monopoly. It was virtually identical to the version he learned from Todd. Modern historians credit Darrow as just one of the game’s final developers, which Darrow sold to Parker Brothers and it then became licensed by Parker Brothers in 1935.

charge high prices. Although monopolies may be big businesses, size is not a characteristic of a monopoly. A small business may still have the power to raise prices in a small industry or market place. So, have Penrith and the Eden Valley cornered the market with the Monopoly board game? The simple answer is yes. Eden FM Community Radio, which launches on its 107.5 frequency and is based in Penrith, is online and you can listen to it via your computer, phone or tablet 24 hours a day 7 days a week, has secured a contract with the UK licensee to co-ordinate the design, the production and sales of this once in a lifetime unique board game. Monopoly, as I have mentioned originated in America. There are quite a few claims to fame, but it was back in 1903 that Elizabeth J Magie Philips created the game, which she hoped would explain the single tax theory of Henry George, with the intention of illustrating the negative aspects of concentrating on land in private monopolies. The game she created was called ‘The Landlord’s Game’. The idea was developed. The game was used by college professors and their students and another variant, called ‘The Fascinating Game of Finance’, was published in the Midwest in the late 1920s and early 1930s. From there, the game travelled back east, where it had remained popular in Pennsylvania and had become popular with a group of Quakers in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

A monopoly exists when a specific person or enterprise is the only supplier of a particular commodity. Monopolies are thus characterised by a lack of economic competition to produce the goods or service and a lack of a viable equivalent or substitute. When we arrive at the verb “monopolise”, this relates to the process by which a company gains the ability to dictate or raise prices or exclude its competitors. In economics, a monopoly is a single seller. In law, a monopoly is a business entity that has significant market power, that is, the power to Cumbria

it’s time to get on board By Lee Quinn

Hasbro is now the owner and licensee of Monopoly, which is licensed in 103 countries and printed in 37 languages. Since 1994, Winning Moves has been the licensee for the UK and this is who Eden FM are doing business with. You can research how many variations of the Monopoly board game have been introduced, but generally under license, four national boards are produced each year in the UK. They are generally boards representing cities. There was a Carlisle Monopoly board game launched on Wednesday 24th October 2007,which featured many famous landmarks. It was one of four national boards launched that year, the others being Bournemouth & Poole, Sheffield and probably the smallest town chosen to date, East Grinstead. So why Penrith and the Eden Valley?

guidelines in limiting the profit made from such a project. After what was almost two years of emails, phone calls and proposals, a contract was agreed for Eden FM Community Radio, to create, coordinate and sell the first and only Penrith and the Eden Valley Monopoly Board game. Local businesses have sponsored the famous coloured property squares and all the other squares. Some charity squares have also been donated by Eden FM. The Penrith & Eden Valley Monopoly launches this summer 2014. You can catch up with when via its Facebook site. The date will be announced very soon as it is now in the final stages with Winning Moves UK Ltd in London. Based on reserve orders, Eden FM will be ordering 3,000 boards. One of the key reasons that Eden FM has taken on this task is to raise money towards equipment and raising its own profile when it switches on its transmitter.

Unlike the regional boards produced by Winning Moves like those mentioned and others like Newcastle, York, Nottingham, Liverpool, Oxford, Leeds, Manchester, Brighton & Hove, Blackpool, Cardiff, Edinburgh and Norwich, the list is quite long. In 2007, I persuaded Winning Moves to produce a national board for East Grinstead town. It had never been done before and I don’t think they’ll do it again, but what they did agree was for me to create a unique, one off board for a region; a board with the famous landmarks, towns and village parishes of the Eden Valley. These boards don’t get created, printed and given away and there are strict

If you would like to reserve a board, please contact admin@edenfm.co.uk. we romped home to a 60-31 victory

WORKINGTON COMETS We made an excellent start to the season beating Newcastle Diamonds over two legs to win back the Ian Thomas Shield. The following Saturday saw us at home to Glasgow without two of our riders, Ricky Wells and Ashley Morris due to a meeting with Wolverhampton. This was something of a slaughtering as we romped home to a 60-31 victory. Skipper Rene Bach recorded 5 wins from 6 rides giving him 17 points. The weekend of the 5th and 6th April saw us completely washed out, on the Saturday Rusty Harrison’s Testimonial was called off due to a waterlogged track and on Sunday we were due to visit Glasgow Tigers but they, unfortunately had also fallen victim to the weather. So to the end of that week and up the M74 to Edinburgh to face the Monarchs skippered by West Cumbrian rider Craig Cook. This ended in a 55-38 defeat at a track which always gives us grief. Josh Grajczonek scored an impressive 14 points with Ricky Wells next in line on 8. To rub salt into our wounds Edinburgh Monarchs came down to Workington the following evening and beat us on our own track 43-50 so it was a slow start to the season with few of our riders taking time to get dialled in, others experiencing mechanical gremlins so simply not the start we had hoped for.

[ WORKINGTON COMETS ] Looking for a result to compensate our faithful supporters for the previous dire weekend we travelled to Berwick to the home of the Bandits. This was a tremendous night’s speedway with some exciting racing where we took them very close, only losing out by a couple of points. We went home with mixed feelings, happy we had done well away from home but gutted that we had come so close.

Peterborough Panthers were our most recent visitors on Saturday 26 in our first meeting of our Premier league campaign. They are a very strong team and had ex Comet Rich Lawson as a guest for their skipper Ryan Fisher. Rich only left Workington in October 2013 and with another ex Comet Ulrich Ostergaard on the team, we knew we had to keep our wits about us and our heads up. We expected a smaller crowd due to a televised speedway GP and the famous Workington Uppies and Downies but despite the fact that Peterborough are one of the more Southern teams and therefore bring little travelling support, our crowd was only slightly down on normal.

Berwick came to us on the Sunday and in front of a very vocal crowd we showed them the way around Derwent Park and the evening ended with a 51-38 victory for Workington. Much talked about Aussie Mason Campton rode to his first paid maximum despite carrying a knee injury from a crash the previous night.

In 2014 there will be a number of events organised by the Beacon Wheelers including time trials, reliability rides, club rides and possibly a cyclocross race.

The grass track season starts in May where we meet down at Frenchfield every Thursday night from 7:00pm and get coached by fully qualified British cycle coaches to increase their power speed and techniques. Also on Thursday nights they offer Go ride sessions for the youngsters which include bike skills, training and development. Again these are led by British cycle coaches teaching the youngsters numerous skills and techniques whilst making cycling fun! Other members will continue to race in different formats including road race MTB, cyclocross velodrome and grass track right through summer. Beacon wheelers provide a fun way of cycle development and there's no pressure to show performance, just to enjoy cycling!

We welcome all new members and would love for people to come and give it a go.

In the few years that Beacon Wheelers have been reformed they have had a couple of awards for

Cyclocross - Road bikes with knobbly tyres racing for an hour round a circuit off road. Road circuit racing - Racing road bikes round a circuit with no traffic. MTB - Racing mountain bikes off road over technical circuits. Grass track - Racing fixed wheel bikes (bikes with no gears brakes or freewheel) round a grass circuit. [ PENRITH NETBALL CLUB ]

PENRITH NETBALL CLUB Penrith Netball Club has been running for many years and practices at the sports hall at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Penrith, on Monday evenings during school term time. There are three sections: 6pm-7pm - Junior Group 1 – for Years 6 – 8 7pm-8pm - Junior Group 2 – for Years 8 – 10/11 8pm-9pm – Senior Group – Years 10/11 with no upper age limit! The club is committed to encouraging young people to develop netball skills and as there is no junior netball league within the vicinity ‘friendly’ matches are arranged with junior squads linked to Carlisle netball teams and two squads (under 14s and under 16s) entered the Cumbria Junior Tournament at Morton School, Carlisle on 22 March. The squads played against teams from Meerkats and Comets from Carlisle, Westmorland Wanderers from Appleby/Kirkby Stephen and teams from Ulverston and Blackpool. Westmorland Wanderers were the winning team in both groups (Under 14 and Under 16). The Penrith players gained valuable match experience from the event. The Senior Group has a wide age range of mixed netball skills and abilities with three netball squads participating in the Carlisle Netball Leagues for Autumn/Winter (September to January) and Spring/Summer (January to June). At the start of the Spring/Summer League Penrith 1 were in Division 1 and

Penrith 2 and 3 play in Division 2. All matches are held at a central venue at Carlisle on a Tuesday evening and to date Penrith teams have been scheduled to play five matches each. After each match players of the game are nominated from each team. Unfortunately all three squads have seen their numbers reduced recently due to illness and injury which has caused concern for Team Coordinators. Penrith 1 have faced stiff opposition in their matches before losing against Harraby 1 and 2 and Meerkats 1, however were successful in matches against Stewartry and Meerkats 3. Penrith 2 won against Panthers and Harraby Mini Stars but lost

against Penrith 3 and Meerkats 2 before having unfortunately to cancel against Dumfries. Penrith 3 is a developmental squad for young players and has been very successful so far this league winning all their matches against Penrith 2, Brampton, Panthers, Harraby Mini Stars and Sands 2. At the end of a match each team nominates a Player of the Game from the opposing team in recognition of their contribution/ ability/skills demonstrated during the match. So far in this League the following Penrith players have been nominated: R Thompson (3); S Thompson (2); J Titterington (2); J Logue (2); L Plasom-Scott; B Griffiths; R Martin; R Titterington; K Aris.

[ NETT Quad Club ]

In October last year the whole of British quad racing was devastated to hear the sad news that Connor Smith had been killed in Italy representing the UK at the Quadcross de Nations. In the following weeks it was plain to see exactly how popular and respected young Connor was with everyone in quad racing from all over Europe and even America. It was agreed very early on with Connor’s family that the NETT Quad Club would organize “The Connor Smith Memorial” at one of his favourite race tracks, Deanmoor MX, Lamplugh, Near Whitehaven.

NETT Quad Club

The event will be on the 14th/15th June, it will be round 2 of the Adult British Quad Championship and round 4 of NETT Quad Club Championship. It is also planned for the top British Sidecar crews to attend. Stuart Brown/ Chamberlain and the Millard brothers have already pledged their support for the sidecar class and this will be the first time sidecar crews have appeared at the fast and exiting Cumbrian venue. A solo mx class will top off the weekends racing. As a club we want to make this the biggest quad meeting of 2014 with some of the funds raised going to the Connor Smith Trust (setup by his family in memory of Connor). The Connor Smith Trust will be providing a massive prize fund for this great event. On top of a full entry with all the top British quad championship racers we have entries coming from Italy and France. There will be two full days of entertaining racing which starts off with the Youth NETT Championship races at 12:30 on Saturday and is finished off with a mechanic/rider fun race on Saturday evening. Saturday night’s entertainment in the marquee/beer tent with DJ Stumpy will start immediately after the racing. Sunday is when all the top racers are in action with the first of three races for the British championship at 10:30. The weekend will finish with a presentation and trophies. Admission on both days is only £10.00 per car and overnight camping is £10.00.

Three of us have already attended a competition at Backworth near Newcastle and achieved very good results although no medals and on May day two of us travelled to Neston on the Wirral to take part in another competition.

To keep interest in the sport the club runs several competitions each year in which other archers from all over the country attend with some of our own and compete for the prizes. These competitions are not only target shooting as most people would think but we also do clout shooting which can see the male adults shooting at a small flag 180yds away and hitting it. [ NUNWICK CRICKET CLUB ]

A NIGHT AT THE DARTS WITH SPECIAL GUEST ERIC BRISTOW On Saturday 19th April, Langwathby Village hall was the venue for Nunwick Cricket Club’s latest fund raising event.

As the feedback from the night was so good there will definitely be a another ‘night at the darts’ next year.

Darts night with the 5 time world champion Eric Bristow, when you think of the world of darts there is only really Phil ‘the power’ Taylor who can rival Eric Bristow in success and stature in the game, so when we heard of the possibility of gaining Eric’s services for the night we jumped at the chance.

But thanks must go to everyone who came to support a night at the darts with Eric Bristow you all made it a memorable evening.

The night consisted of 16 legs of darts that were raffled off on the night for a chance to play a leg of 501 against Bristow. With a full board and stage set up and MC Paul Booth who was mixing it up between shouting the scores and stand up comedy the atmosphere in the hall was tremendous. Half way through the evening the audience had their chance to ask Eric questions that varied from What was your best match? To, What do you think of the modern day game? To, who did you like best in the Jungle?!!!

NUNWICK CRICKET CLUB ‘The friendly village club with big ambition’ Nunwick Cricket Club is set just on the edge of the village of Great Salkeld in the Eden valley.

The night was a huge success with some good legs of darts and a lot of beer drunk, everyone went away from the evening very merry, with a lot of positive feedback on what a great guest Eric Bristow was as he mingled at the bar with everyone and had time to speak and have photos with people.

The idyllic ground plays host to two senior teams which play in the Eden valley leagues and 3 Junior teams which also play in the Eden valley junior league set up. Also the club enter a team in the midweek 20/20 league on a Wednesday evening and hold a junior coaching night on a Tuesday evening where kids from 7 to 16 years old attend and receive coaching from the clubs ECB qualified coaches.

As I said the event was a fund raiser for Nunwick Cricket Club. We are very pro-active off the field as we are an ambitious village club which brings with it extra costs. So nights like these and all the other events throughout the year help towards paying for these things such as more coaching equipment for the junior and senior teams, continued work on our forever improving square, extensions to the pavilion, better equipment for the ground staff to use the list goes on. So we try to put a variety of different events on throughout the year which we hope people enjoy and they do get very well supported.

Over the last 5 to 10 years the club has moved from strength to strength with major work been done on and off the pitch. There has been state of the art 3 lane all weather practice nets installed, with an all weather wicket added to the playing square. Also continued work on the grass wickets and with the outfield increasing in size and quality as well. The pitch and training

Help us make your garden that little bit special for you

All this work and ambition the club shows come at a price, and the club are very active and creative in fund raising off the pitch. Throughout the year the club host lots of different events, from Darts nights, golf days, race nights, Cheese & wine nights, Music Festivals and the one that is coming up soon on June 6th a sporting dinner for men & women at the Roundthorn hotel with special guest Chris Cowdery and comedian Josh Daniels, and magician Tom Hudson.

[ Cumbria Horse Trials ]

Cumbria Horse Trials built up a reputation over the last eleven years for hosting friendly, well run, grassroots competitions. Accessibility is a key factor in the sites that they choose. “If someone has spent the best part of two hours driving across the county on main roads, they don’t then want another 45 minutes negotiating country lanes. We are at a crossroads between North Yorkshire, the North West and Scotland – it’s a great place to be,” says Douglas. Douglas and Lucinda Weymouth have Cumbrian eventing pretty much sewn up: they run an impressive six fixtures a year at three different venues and have

Douglas could boast (although he never would) an impressive CV. British Eventing Technical Adviser; multiple

event organiser; fifteen years designing and building cross country courses; Platinum Level International Course Builder; and a member of the Scottish and Northern Working Party, briefed to ensure the sustainability of events in the region. He understands the sport from both sides of the fence, having ridden at Bramham before eventually hanging up his competitive boots in the mid-eighties. A career in course building came about when he was asked to build at the former Armathwaite, Castletown and Brougham Horse Trials in the county and the rest is history.

[ Cumbria Horse Trials ] When Brougham retired out of the calendar in 2006 next into the schedule came Hutton-in-the-Forest. The historic home of Lord & Lady Inglewood, the house dates from the fourteenth century and provides a stunning backdrop to proceedings, surrounded as it is by magnificent woodland.

E. Patterson & Direct Opposition

It is not a venue for the faint-hearted. Douglas has built challenging courses over the undulating terrain. “The novice course is not necessarily for a first timer, more for someone looking to upgrade,” Douglas admits. “It’s incredibly popular with riders who come back time after time because they enjoy the challenge.” At the other end of the spectrum is Eden Valley where three of the Weymouth’s events take place. Nord Vue Farm hosts BE80T, BE90 and BE100 competitors, making the most of a large all-weather arena for the show jumping which minimises the effect of excessive rainfall. According to Douglas, Eden Valley is the perfect place for a first timer at any level. New for 2014 was Warwick Hall in early May, and this is a venue that Douglas is particularly excited about. “It’s perfect: sandy ground, old turf grazed by sheep, interconnecting parkland fields, a picturesque country house, plenty of flat space for the main arenas, it’s accessible

Every horse trials need at least 120 volunteers for every day of competition. This is where Lucinda’s strengths really come to the fore. “Lucinda is fantastic at organising this – she has real respect for what the volunteers do, and she looks after them. They are as important as the competitors, and she takes a very personal approach.”

Cumbria Horse Trials Cumbria Horse Trials @douglasweymouth

So, why do they do it? “Hmmm, I don’t know, particularly on the Monday morning after an event,” Douglas chuckles. “I’m immersed in the sport. I just love putting all the infrastructure together – finding the venue, designing and building the course, getting the tradestands and sponsors on board... the whole thing. It’s very rewarding.”

107.5 Eden

The final transition to transmission - that is Eden FM 107.5

it off because someone can’t make it in. There are many things you can’t do without a cost and commitment. The rules for a community radio station aren’t dissimilar to those of any regional or national radio station. In fact those who have worked in radio will understand how difficult it is. There is a huge difference between a radio station where all the staff are paid and a radio station where a small percentage are paid like Eden FM. As a ‘not for profit’ limited company, which is one of many of the requirements outlined in the community licence held by Eden FM Radio Ltd, run for 24 hours a day, every day of the year, goes beyond a passion of just being a DJ.

It’s a short story. In fact it’s more of an update as the story is still being written. It was July 2010 when I stood in the Cumbria Mini Centre at Ullswater Road Garage, Penrith, trying my best to sell advertising space to a car salesman. The Mini Centre had only just opened about 4 weeks earlier, but I didn’t know this at the time. At this stage, I was preparing for the launch of the local magazine Eden Local, which would be the main communication tool of the campaign for a local community radio station based in Penrith. I met Steve, the proprietor of the Mini Centre. Within what was an hour, we had moved on, advertising was booked, a network had begun and a radio site found, which was a provisional tick on a very long list.

Firstly, let’s just iron out that factor that the radio actually has presenters not DJs. A radio presenter is invited into your home when you switch on your radio. They talk to you and sometimes you might respond to them with a smile or a frown! A DJ may use a laptop, CDs in the 80s and before that it was decks, turntables and vinyl since it began. So from Disc Jockeys to radio presenters, Eden FM had a group of volunteers, many of them DJs and some of them people with a passion to be on the radio. On March 22nd the first meeting was held for potential volunteers. Many meetings followed and the team started to grow. It was a difficult process, presenting a vision, showing people a room full of junk that would eventually be studios.

Building a radio station does require a lot of funding. Sometimes what you’ll eventually hear on the internet or on your radio is masked in many ways. The budget the station has to spend on a studio microphone could be £30, £300 or £3,000, something you don’t get to see. At community radio level, whilst the standard is compared by many to what they are used to, this does set a standard unlike the BBC or a Commercial station as generally 90% of the presenters are volunteers.

Martin Cowin from Brough arrived on the bus one day. He was one of those volunteers that attended a meeting. His words and his thoughts, ‘I came along to a meeting and got showed around. It wasn’t a radio station, it was a room full of junk. No equipment and some bloke saying we could have a radio station up and running in 2 months. I thought he was either genius or absolutely crackers’. Martin is now the Station Manager, a director, committee member and a presenter on Eden FM, the volunteer to be employed on a part-time contract at Eden FM. He has witnessed the roller coaster ride of radio. As I explained to him and the group at the time, if we have a box, a mic and a record player that we can wire to a transmitter, that is the worst scenario.

Many people guess at what it might cost, however, it’s not all about the money. It’s actually all about people working together towards a common goal. It’s no good having the facilities to be able to raise the funds if you haven’t got the commitment of the people. It’s not just about presenting, it’s also about an understanding of responsibility. It’s not about egos. It’s about serving the community.

At the time when Martin Joined, Andy Neen also joined the radio project. Now the senior technician, a

[ eden fm ] director and presenter at Eden FM, he is a volunteer, fitting in what he can around his full-time work. As my deputy, Andy has played a key role in keeping the radio running through two further 28 day trials in 2012. Since it was switched on, 25th November 2011, the station has been online 24/7 and will continue online for those not able to receive Eden FM on 107.5 FM. Andy is currently heading up the rebuild of two new studios ready for launch. Every cable, plug, switch, button and the IT link are his responsibility, including remote access should it be necessary by Martin or him to run the station from anywhere in the world.

launched a radio station with the exception of one person. It was a steep learning curve, yes and an experience to look back on and build on, absolutely. The idea of Penrith and the surrounding areas having its own Community radio station has been a process, much of it outlined by Ofcom procedure, whilst Eden FM had set up, it was going to have to wait until November 2012 until it could apply to Ofcom for its licence. It was in 2013 that Ofcom then confirmed Eden FM was granted a full-time community licence. When Eden FM switches its transmitter on and broadcasts from 107.5 FM, it will almost be in its fourth year since the idea of having a radio station at its first premises at Ullswater Road Garage, was conceived.

For the full team line up, as it is taking shape, you can go to www.edenfm.co.uk . The youngest presenters are 14 and the oldest I cannot reveal, but is of a young retirement age. In the team now around 20 presenters; we’ll need another 10 presenters before 20th June 2014. When Eden FM radio switched on to transmit on 87.7 FM at 10am on 25th November 2011 for its first 4 week trial , it had 5 presenters (including the 11 year old now 14) who had actually presented live on a radio station at a community or regional level. No one had ever designed, built and

The Cumbria Sports and Events guide will allow clubs to promote themselves to a wider audience and hopefully help them recruit new members. It will allow clubs to give regular monthly updates on how they have been performing, what is coming up in the future and who to contact if you would like to join them. Articles in the magazine have a personal touch as they are predominantly written by members of their own organisation. Not press releases, just great stories please, get them sent them in.

If you would like your club, school or event to appear in the next issue of Cumbria Sports and Events magazine or would like to have a regular feature on the Eden FM Sports radio show, please contact Eden FM at admin@edenfm.co.uk or call us on 01768 862394 or 01768 899101.

Youth participation in sports and events is the future of the region’s success. With this in mind, the new magazine will have built on having an extensive coverage of what has been going on at school and youth team level. Let’s get behind our youngsters and give them the publicity they deserve!

Our thanks to Moorland Primary School, North Lakes School, Cartmell Baseball, Carlisle Wheelchair Sports Club, Austin Friars, Ullswater Community College, Castletown Under 10’s Football, Celtic Nation Football Club, Greystoke Football Club, John Foley, Mike Ellery, Penrith Rugby Club, Whitehaven Rugby League, Ullswater Yacht Club, Workington Comets Speedway, Beacon Wheelers, Appleby Swimming Club, Penrith Netball Team, Penrith Tennis Club, NETT Quad Club, Penrith Badminton, Eagle Bowmen, Beacon Archers, Nunwick Cricket Club, Penrith Cricket Club, Cumbrian Horse Trials and The Cumberland Show

Unsung heroes, it’s time for some recognition, retiring into sport or activities, staying active in body or mind, maybe both. With so many events and festivals going on in the area, we will be dedicating a section of the magazine to exactly that. This will allow events such as Penrith Show, Skelton Show and other seasonal festivals the chance to have a lot more exposure than they currently have across Cumbria.
