Golden Envlope Donation for Coping with CHAOS A West Moors’ couple, Gillian and Alex Clarke, have donated £50 to Coping with CHAOS, run by Diverse Abilities, Dorset’s Disability charity.

and the rest of the family, including activity sessions for siblings.

The donation started as a golden envelope donation from the new Bishop of Salisbury, Bishop Stephen Lake, when he was welcomed to Salisbury Cathedral in June. Everyone was given an envelope containing £10 with a total of £10,000 given away, donated by two generous benefactors.

Clare Rochford, Children’s Team manager, commented: “We really appreciate this kind and generous donation, it will mean so much for the children and families we support in our school holiday activities, youth club and family support service.”

The instructions given were to make the £10 grow and to give it away so that ‘in an anxious world, it would make a difference’. Husband and wife, Alex and Gillian Clarke chose to donate £50 to Coping with CHAOS to make a difference to the lives of children and young people in Dorset as a gift from St. Mary’s Church in West Moors.

Visit diverseabilities.org.uk/coping-withchaos to find out more about Coping with CHAOS, including school holiday activities, Awesome Nights youth club for 13 to 18-year-olds, and family support sessions including regular coffee breaks, workshops and information sessions.

Coping with CHAOS provides support to children and young people with complex, profound and multiple learning disabilities and challenging behaviours who cannot easily access other resources and play schemes. These children and young people, plus their families, benefit from play opportunities every day of the school holidays, a youth club and lots of support and information for parents 6

Talbot Village Trust donates £50,000 to help keep Dorset schoolchildren safe Talbot Village Trust, a local grant giving charity that supports worthy causes in south-east Dorset, has donated £50,000 to help not-forprofit organisation 360 Skills For Life keep schoolchildren safe across Dorset through classroom-based interactive learning. The Trust’s funding has helped the charity create Skill City, a high-quality virtual reality environment to address safeguarding issues for Year 6 to Year 9 pupils (10-14 year olds). Rob Hattersley, Founder and Managing Director of 360 Life Skills, said: “Safeguarding children is a matter of huge concern in schools and society generally, especially during the pandemic. Schools and agencies are doing so much in terms of improving processes, but there is an opportunity to use the classroom itself to raise awareness and confidence in children for keeping themselves safe.” Rob Hattersley added: “We are immensely grateful that Talbot Village Trust has enabled us to launch our first phase on safeguarding for 10-14 year olds. The Trust has given us a great foundation on which we can build, extending out to younger age groups and a wide range of additional skills for life topics, such as active travel and the climate emergency.” There are up to 18 age-appropriate safeguarding dilemmas available for teachers to select for students to experience either as a class or in groups. Within different virtual environments, including streets, crossings, parks, shops, police and railway stations, schoolchildren can play out scenarios, assess risks and investigate options. The objective is for pupils to develop transferable skills for every scenario in order to make confident decisions to keep themselves and others safe in real life.

8

Nicholas AshleyCooper, Chairman of Talbot Village Trust, said: “As supporters of the SafeWise charity, we were saddened by its closure in January 2021 due to Covid-related issues and are delighted to pledge our support to its new digital counterpart. 360 Skills For Life is a dynamic social enterprise with the foresight to look beyond exams to prepare our young people with the skills and confidence they need to live fulfilling and safer lives. We look forward to seeing how the pilot phase has helped children across the region when the full academic evaluation is published in early 2023.” Phase one is now live, with a limited number of fully funded places for both primary and secondary schools across BCP and Dorset council areas. Schools interested in applying are encouraged to get in touch through the website www.360skillsforlife.org Rob Hattersley continued: “Due to the current situation in schools, we have extended membership to the end of July 2023. This will allow schools joining us this term to explore the resource before they incorporate it into curriculum planning for the next academic year.” The Talbot Village Trust meets biannually and is accepting applications for funding from both previous and new applicants in the area before the Trustees meet in Autumn 2022. To apply for funding from the Trust, visit www.talbotvillagetrust.org to submit an online application.

From Downton to Pamela Anderson The evolution of actress Lily James. In terms of career transformations, Lily James has been through many. From her early days of period drama grace and finesse on Downton Abbey, Cinderella and The Darkest Hour, to musical interventions – notably in the 2018 summer blockbuster, Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again – and punchy, actionled drama, in Baby Driver and Rebecca, comedy/reality fodder in the form of Yesterday, and romance-led films such as Rare Beasts and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society. If a genre exists that the 33-year-old British actress is yet to truly explore, it’s the biopic; yet all that is set to change this summer when Lily stars as Pamela Anderson in the upcoming Hulu-screened series Pam & Tommy. The eight-part series tells the story of how two stars from very opposite ends of the entertainment spectrum – she, the beach-bodied Baywatch star; he, the excess-strewn Motley Crew drummer – made waves and headlines in a sensational period during the Nineties. “Growing up, I never had the vision or perception that I would sculpt my own look to be that of Pamela Anderson!” begins the actress, with a laugh. “I mean, for a good two decades she

was a fantasy figure for both men and women the world over, but not someone I ever thought I would

“I keep going, looking towards the next job, the next job, the challenges that come with it, and I sort of break those challenges down into smaller ones, mini ones and take it step by step, day by day,” she says.

be trying to emulate, so it was strange to really want to mould myself into this entity!

“I know I’ve been lucky, and although I’ve become a little more assured over time, I still fear it may all disappear.”

“The physical aspect was obviously the most demanding. It was a huge task each time we got on set to turn myself into her, and the make-up department did an incredible job.”

Lily, who names Cate Blanchett, Dame Maggie Smith, Gary Oldman and Kristin Scott Thomas as the most inspirational people she has worked with, remains philosophical about a body of work that continues to move her forward in its demands.

The role represents another significant forward step for an actress whose award roster fails to reflect the veracity and versatility with which she has approached her craft.

“I am going to carry on giving everything I can to the projects I’m working on. Certainly, I am finding out more about myself as well as the people I portray, and that’s really important.”

First Beaver Kit born in Dorset for over 400 years Beavers have bred in Dorset for the first time in over 400 years at Dorset Wildlife Trust’s enclosed beaver site in West Dorset. Trail cameras inside the enclosure have captured images of a young beaver, known as a kit, and its mother, exploring the watery woodland created by its parents since they were released in February 2021. This landmark project for Dorset is hosted by Dorset Wildlife Trust working alongside lead partners, University of Exeter and Wessex Water to undertake a scientific study to assess all the impacts that beavers make on the natural environment including river flow, water quality and biodiversity. Since the beavers were introduced to site, they have built dams, creating a wetland to suit their needs but which also provides habitat for many other species, such as frogs and newts which depend on water. Rivers Conservation Officer, Steve Oliver said, “We have been closely monitoring the pair since their release and it has been clear that they have formed a strong bond in the time they have been on site, and this latest discovery is further evidence of this, alongside their industrious dam building activity. The trail cams have only identified one kit so far, but beavers can typically have one to four kits in a litter, and we are discreetly observing their activity to see if any others have been born.

on the journey to restore beavers to Dorset, helping us to raise awareness and understanding of what it means to have these influential mammals back in our county. Beavers have the potential to make a huge difference to our natural environment and can assist nature’s recovery as well as providing other benefits for humans.” Eurasian beavers Castor fiber were once native to Dorset and are known as nature’s ecosystem engineers due to their activities, such as dam building to create deep water in which they feel safe, having such a positive impact on the local environment. Beavers even have the potential to reduce flooding by slowing the rate of water during extreme rainfall events. Once common in the UK, the 16th century saw Eurasian beavers hunted to extinction for their meat, fur, and castoreum, a secretion from their castor glands. Seeing the first kit is an incredibly exciting moment for the project and breeding is a clear indication of normal behaviour and that the adult pair are healthy and happily settled in their Dorset surroundings. This local project is an enormous step forward

Tech breakthroughs The technology trends that are on their way. Passwords are so passe The era of the password is set to, well, pass. Instead, we are moving at rapid speed into new forms of authentication. This can be as either a link sent via email, a push notification, or a biometric scan. These methods are more easily accessible and much more secure. Virus tracking Human intelligence is such that we learn from the setbacks we encounter, and that is certainly the case as far as Covid is concerned. In the aftermath of the global pandemic, we are now much better equipped to recognise, survey and track viruses around the world, allowing faster diagnosis and a quicker response time. Iron-based batteries During key times and major national events, there is a profound demand for electricity, and our systems can’t always cope. However, with the use of iron battery technology, grid operators will be able to store energy for longer. Not only

18

are they made using abundant materials, they are also said to be cheaper and more practical than other types of grid storage. Protein flooding The trick to targeted ridding our bodies of disease comes down to figuring out our protein structure, and that can take months. However, a new AI called AlphaFold2 has solved this longstanding biological puzzle, which could make it possible to quickly design drugs for a wide range of diseases. Bitcoin energy usage While crypto has become a buzzword for profitability and flexibility, huge quantities of energy are used in the verifying of crypto transactions. However, a new Proof of Stake system adopted by Ethereum will use less than one-thousandth of the energy currently required, and is set to be introduced soon. Carbon removal A factory just opened in Iceland can remove carbon dioxide from the air, with its perceived success potentially opening up a drive to build other plants

across the world. Aging clocks If someone could tell you how long you’re going to live, would you be brave enough to reveal the answer? Aging clocks can do just this. Most work by estimating a person’s biological age based on patterns of epigenetic markers - specifically, chemical tags called methyl groups that are layered onto DNA and affect how genes are expressed. Others, meanwhile, act more like a speedometer, tracking the pace of aging, with clocks having been developed for specific organs of the body. Scientists hope our ability to know how long we have left may well spark us into undertaking healthier lifestyles.

The (New) Seven Wonders of the World The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World have all but succumbed to old age or natural disaster – with the Great Pyramid at Giza the only survivor. Thankfully, there’s a new breed of mighty manmade monuments around, and all well within the grasp of any traveller willing to seek them out. 1. CHICHÉN ITZA, MEXICO The ancient city of Chichén Itza is located on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. This well-known Mayan city served as a religious, political and economic centre for several hundred years. The Pyramid of Kulkulkán is probably the most recognised ruin of Chichén Itza, standing at 80ft high and incorporating a total of 365 huge stone steps. 2. CHRIST THE REDEEMER, BRAZIL This statue of Jesus is one of Rio de Janeiro’s most widely recognised monuments. It stands 98.5ft tall atop the summit of Mount Corcovado, which itself rises more than 2,300ft. With an outstretched armspan of 92ft, and a weight of approximately 700 tonnes, the concrete and soapstone leviathan is the destination of many a pilgrimage. 3. THE COLOSSEUM, ITALY Gladiator contests, group combat, battle re-

24

enactments and other productions were staged at the Colosseum to an audience of almost 50,000. Today, even after some renovations in the 1990s, the wear and tear from poor weather, natural disaster and vandalism show, but they can’t take away from this iconic Italian sight. And while you’re there, why not soak up Rome’s unique culture at the same time? 4. THE TAJ MAHAL, INDIA This 42-acre marble mausoleum complex located in Agra is a stunning Indian landmark. Construction started in 1631, spanning more than two decades, requiring more than 20,000 labourers, and costing several million rupees. 5. GREAT WALL OF CHINA, CHINA The Great Wall of China is without doubt a modern marvel and rightfully belongs amongst the other seven Wonders. Contrary to popular belief, the wall isn’t one continuous structure - it’s actually made up of several separate structures that cover approximately 4,500 miles. Pack your walking boots! 6. PETRA, JORDAN Located in south-west Jordan are the ruins of the ancient city of Petra. Massive temples,

tombs and monuments have been cut into the surrounding sandstone cliffs and were immortalised in 1989’s Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Perhaps the most impressive Petra structure is the Sik alKhazneh, an elaborately carved and embellished tomb. 7. MACHU PICCHU, PERU Built in the 15th century, this ancient Incan city is nestled between two peaks – Machu Picchu (Old Peak) and Huayna Picchu (New Peak) at an amazing elevation of 7,710ft. It is often called the lost city of the Incas because it was hidden amidst the lush forest and clouds of Peru for more than three centuries. Now rediscovered, it is a sight to be admired, and one that retains every ounce of mystical promise.

Money on my mind... the Martin Lewis column He’s the UK’s leading money saving expert - a journalist and presenter who has kept millions of pounds in people’s pockets as well as lifting the lid on the threats and dangers we need to be aware of as consumers. In this month’s column, Martin Lewis looks at how we can repair our credit score. Let’s be honest, the last couple of years haven’t been kind to our finances. The good news is the ability to rescue and repair that credit rating is within our own hands, and with a concerted plan we can get back to where we want to be. And that’s important – having a good credit rating means gaining access to preferential interest rates; it could be the difference between being able to buy a house, or rent a flat, or not; and it also gives us peace of mind that if an emergency crops up we can lean on financial support. When it comes to improving

our credit score, first check your current rating – with the likes of Experian or Equifax – and know what you’re dealing with. When you’ve done that, see about disassociating yourself from others who may be pulling you down with their own chequered credit history - their activity may be negatively impacting yours. Next, get yourself signed up on the electoral roll. It’s a great way for credit agencies to be able to verify who you are and adds a layer of authenticity to any application.

Spring cleaning your finances is another really sensible option. Many of us have old credit cards or bank accounts that we don’t use. They may seem harmless on the face of it, but they all represent risk as far as your credit score is concerned. Next, start investing in your credit future. Using a credit card may seem a peculiar way of improving your credit, but done sensibly it will. And by sensibly, I mean use it for everyday purchases on the specific understanding you’ll clear the balance at the end of each month. Doing this will boost your credit rating and prove to any lender that you can be trusted. Finally, if you can’t afford to clear your full balance at the end of the month, at least pay off more than the minimum payment. Mending your credit score won’t be achieved overnight, but your future self will thank you for your efforts today!

STAR GAZING WRITTEN BY KATE EARL

kateearlastro@gmail.com

Welcome to the August Stargazing Page. Highlights this month include the annual Perseid meteor shower, and spotting the centre of the Milky Way.

International Space Station

The ISS can be spotted in the last week of August, early in the morning. To establish exact timings please refer to www.heavens-above.com or a similar webpage for up-to-date information, remembering to set the location to your observing area.

Sun. They haven’t quite accumulated enough mass to shine like a typical star, and instead produce energy by burning a form of hydrogen gas called deuterium. They are very small, faint objects and quite hard to study. White dwarf stars are what remain after a small star runs out of energy and dies. When smaller stars (like our Sun) have converted most of their hydrogen to helium, they puff off their outer layers in a planetary nebula, and all that remains at the centre is a core of dense material about the size of Earth, which slowly cools over millions of years. Neutron stars are the incredibly dense, weird balls of neutrons that remain after a giant star has exploded in a supernova. They are typically the size of a city, with a mass the same as the Sun. This means that a teaspoon of neutron star would weigh as much as a mountain! Saturn

A Design for Life… The Kevin McCloud Column Designer, writer and television presenter, Kevin McCloud leapt into our consciousness with his vastly successful Grand Designs show on Channel 4. This month, the affable architectural business owner talks about individuality and belief. I think sometimes people look at architecture as something that’s unattainable by us; it’s something by which we feel the need to call in help, to pursue the talents and experience of someone else in order to get us to where we want to be. Yet the reality is very different. Anyone can start with an idea or a concept; slowly, gradually, carefully acquiring skills so as to be able to turn some of those thoughts and ambitions into reality. And the reward from that is two-fold – naturally you can do something that is based on your own timeframe and your own budget; but more importantly, forevermore you can look at

32

something that you produced and know it came from within, it came from the heart, and it addressed that incredibly special element that exists in all our lives where we invest emotion and energy into what are, otherwise, inanimate objects. And this is a very human trait that is vital where architecture and, by extension, our homes, are concerned. It’s the fact that to anyone else, the space will ultimately mean something else versus how you interpret it; and to some people it may just mean nothing at all. There may be no tangible connection or emotion that comes from it. Yet when we produce, envisage, imagine and create a path for something that is our own creation and our own production, we add into it an element that is bespoke, that is individual and that, you would hope, will still hold a legacy for who we are and who we were in that very moment we created it, for decades to come.

That’s why I always want to encourage individuality in people who are passionate about putting their own fingerprint on their homes. There are really no bad decisions… providing you obey the basics of construction, that is! So rather than just follow the guidelines and the trends and the fashions of the populous, get out there and find your own… and more than that, make that reality yourself, if you can, rather than calling in someone else. That, to me, is the biggest thrill when I look in on the projects others have created. To see their own work is to understand the person, and only by understanding each other can we ever truly move forward.

Fiction Factory This month, four forays into fantastic fiction to ease you through the summer sun. covered in black pen, scribbled messages like graffiti on her skin: STAY AWAKE. In the vein of SJ Watson’s Before I Go to Sleep and Christopher Nolan’s cult classic Memento, Megan Goldin’s Stay Awake is an electrifying novel that plays with memory and murder.

The Final Gambit by Jennifer Lynn Barnes (Aug 30th) To inherit billions, all Avery Kylie Grambs has to do is survive a few more weeks living in Hawthorne House. The paparazzi are dogging her every step. Financial pressures are building. Danger is a fact of life. Yet as the clock ticks down to the moment when Avery will become the richest teenager on the planet, trouble arrives in the form of a visitor who needs her help. Stay Awake by Megan Goldin (Aug 9th) Liv Reese wakes up in the back of a taxi with no idea where she is or how she got there. When she’s dropped off at her door, a stranger answers―a stranger who now lives in her apartment and forces her out in the cold. Love on the Brain by Ali Hazelwood (Aug 23rd) From the New York Times bestselling author of The Love Hypothesis comes a new STEMinist rom-com in which a scientist is forced to work on a project with her nemesis—with explosive results. Sure, Levi is attractive in a tall, dark, and piercing-eyes kind of way. And sure, he caught her in his powerfully corded arms like a romance novel hero when she accidentally damseled in distress on her first day in the lab. But Levi made his feelings toward Bee very clear in grad school— archenemies work best employed in their own galaxies far, far away. Yet Bee could swear she can see Levi softening into

an ally, backing her plays, seconding her ideas… and the possibilities have all her neurons firing. The Hookup Plan by Farrah Rochon (Aug 2nd) Strong female friendships and a snappy enemies-to-lovers theme take centre stage in this highly anticipated romantic comedy from the USA Today bestselling author of The Dating Playbook. Successful paediatric surgeon London Kelley just needs to find some balance and de-stress. According to her friends Samiah and Taylor, what London really needs is a casual hookup. A night of fun with no strings. But no one, least of all London, expected it to go down at her high school reunion with millionaire Drew Sullivan…

Greenfingers… the Alan Titchmarsh column He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and all-round horticultural inspiration. This month, Alan Titchmarsh talks about the most common mistakes we make in our gardens. I always say, as a golden rule, prevention is better than cure, so with that in mind here are my top seven gardening mistakes… and how to avoid them! Firstly, you can have too much of a good thing! Less is more when it comes to good gardening, and if you cram too much together it’ll look a mess, or worse still, will die!

38

but only if they’re left in the ground! Another big thing is failing to prepare your soil. Give your plants a chance by ensuring the soil they’re in is in good condition. A simple testing kit will let you know if you need to re-compost, add fertiliser, or simply switch to a different soil type. You should also steer clear of what I call ‘the bullies’! Japanese knotweed and Russian vine are particularly unruly and will literally

gardens are those that manage to protect the food supply present!

Another big error is over- and underwatering. Be regimented over your watering routine and adjust it depending on rainfall to ensure your garden is nicely hydrated at all times.

My final piece of advice is to try to spread the love around your garden. Few of us have an endless budget with which to run riot in our green spaces, and it’s better to do a little at a time across the board, than blow it all in one part of the garden, leaving the rest of it looking forlorn and bereft.

Next, always ensure what you’re pulling up are weeds and not slow-developing flowers. We can sometimes find ourselves being particularly ruthless with what grows in our gardens, so remember, everything grows at a different rate and sometimes the most mundane of plants will flourish to become the most beautiful…

Remember, no two gardens are the same, in much the same way that no two gardeners are the same, and you’re never going to get it right all of the time. The most important thing is to be organised and put the effort in – if you do that, the rewards will very often follow close behind.

undermine not just your flowers, but nearby buildings too! And the same goes for our animal friends. Sure, we may like to see a hedgehog, bird life, even the odd fox, but the best

Understanding Investments: Actions to take in volatile markets Investment markets have experienced a very challenging 2022 to date. In fact if the year ended now, it would be the first time since 1969 that both the bond markets and equity markets are negative (usually bonds rise in value as equities fall and visaversa, which is why many portfolios contain a mix of both). This has been created by 3 main concerns. • Prior to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, investment markets had recovered strongly post COVID and concerns were that the economy, and especially demand for goods, was overheating and creating inflation that needed to be cooled. Central banks started to implement interest rate increases in an attempt to slow demand. Rising interest rates reduce the capital value of bonds (think a see-saw so as rates go up on one side the values fall on the other). Shares valuations can also reduce because when you buy a share, you are buying its future earnings. What you might pay for that will be more if you can only earn 0.1% on cash and less if you can earn 2% on cash-hence why share valuations have fallen. • The Russia/Ukraine conflict has resulted in higher food and energy costs, which are likely to remain an issue for as long as the conflict continues. • There are fears that the combined effect of higher prices and higher interest rates will cool consumer demand and push the world into a recession. This will help reduce inflation but at what cost? It is at times like these that experience counts. Whilst each event is different, history has taught us that the way investment markets react can be surprisingly similar. This is a time to make rational, thoughtful decisions based on facts rather than emotions. Some time-tested suggestions: 1. Remember what you are investing for, and your financial objectives. These are unlikely to have changed during the past few months and should help you put potentially worrying headlines into context. 2. Focus on what you think markets will be doing or where they might be in 5-10 years-time, not on what has happened in the last month or what

42

will happen next month. If you are investing for the long-term, prices Howard Goodship of good quality investments are now lower and offer better value than before. 3. Using cash reserves as a short-term measure instead of taking income from investments can be a sensible idea. Now is not the time to sell investments unless you need the proceeds in the short-term. 4. It is notoriously difficult to time the markets. If you sell, you not only have to time your exit but also your re-entry. Even professionals with all available data struggle with this. It is time in the market that counts as historically the worst days in the market are often followed by some of the best and missing just a handful of days can affect your returns for years. 5. Market declines are common and part of investing. In fact, investing money during market declines has historically produced above average returns over the long term. We are here to help. Whilst we don’t possess a crystal ball (no-one does by the way, despite what the newspaper experts might say), we do have plenty of data and experience to support our views. We are objective, and believe that it is during difficult, volatile times that we prove our worth for our clients. Five Alive It can often feel like a perennial uphill struggle when it comes to getting your young ones to consume their ‘five a day’, so why not try these handy tips below, and see if they don’t help your little ones stave off hunger whilst keeping healthy at the same time. 1. Healthy junk food Try making your own healthy junk food using good quality lean meat for burgers. Kids can join in with the preparation, and if you must relent with a dollop of ketchup then do so. Also consider swapping desserts that are high in refined sugars with easy-to-make fresh fruit ice lollies made from fruit juice and pureed fruits. 2. Proper provenance Some kids can spot a hidden mushroom a mile off, so sometimes it’s best to be upfront about fruit and vegetables. Education is key to any negotiation, so explain to your young ones where their food has come from and why each thing is so good for them. You

may well get them more interested in what they are eating. 3. Appearance Try to make sure your child’s food not only tastes good but looks good too. Mini portions, chicken skewers or bite-sized pieces of fruit will look enticing, even artistic, whilst keeping your kids healthy and boosting creativity at the same time! 4. The fridge shelf Sometimes the fact we reach for junk food or occasional snacks can be simply down to a lack of accessible or appealing alternatives. A low shelf in the fridge with cut-up fresh fruit and other healthy foods means hungry children have somewhere to go that’s easy to get to and packed with nutritious nibbles. 5. Get involved Lay ingredients out in bowls and let your youngsters fill and fold their own wraps, or choose their favourite toppings for tasty homemade pizzas. Even the most uninspiring of meals takes

44

on another dimension when our young people are involved and can take pride in its creation. It’s amazing how being involved in the planning and preparation of a meal can stimulate a child’s appetite too! And a bonus suggestion… Clear the plate or clear up afterwards! Finally, if all else fails, tell your youngsters that those clearing their plates do not need to help with the clearing away afterwards. While it won’t necessarily endear them any more to some of the greens in front of them, it may sway them into polishing off the portion, so in that respect, everyone wins!

Ocean adventure sails into Dorset this autumn! All aboard for mesmerising ocean adventure! The Ocean Film Festival World Tour is bringing a new collection of the world’s best oceanthemed films to venues around the UK this autumn. From big wave surfing to tiger shark conservation, the Ocean Film Festival is a cinematic celebration of the planet’s oceans, with inspirational short films from above and beneath the waves. “Dive into a night of wild seafaring voyages and astounding marine life – without getting your feet wet!” says tour director Nell Teasdale. “We’re so excited to be bringing this brand-new collection of captivating films to ocean loving audiences around the UK – and we guarantee you’ll be inspired to have an ocean adventure of your own too.” The Ocean Film Festival originated in Australia, with the aim of inspiring people to explore, respect, enjoy and protect the oceans. As well as captivating films, each screening will see a free prize giveaway to win ocean-related goodies. The UK tour works with two fantastic

charity partners: the Marine Conservation Society and Surfers Against Sewage. Film highlights include: CIRCUMNAVIGATE Father of three Brendon Prince, from South Devon, attempts to become the first person ever to stand-up paddleboard around mainland Britain – a challenge that many have tried, but none have achieved. Circumnavigate joins Brendan on his gruelling journey around Britain’s spectacular and often treacherous coastline, in an attempt to break five world records and raise awareness for water safety education. TIGER SHARK KING More than 20 years ago, conservationist and diver Jim Abernethy discovered the ‘affectionate’ side of large predatory sharks after removing a fishing hook from the jaws of a tiger shark. Since then he has removed thousands of hooks from sharks in the warm, clear waters off the Bahamas, and has brought divers to safely encounter these apex predators with the goal of de-stigmatising sharks as mindless killers. The Adventures of Daichi

The Modern Magazines Camper Van Daichi, our wonderful “Modern Magazines Campervan” loves a success story. This month he was very excited to be taking us to Marshfield Farm near Bath. The journey there is really quite stunning. Winding roads between beautiful, luscious green hills with views as far as the eye could see. Very soothing and Daichi purred his way there. Having bought an ice-cream parlour just a few months ago, and now serving this delicious ice-cream in our newly acquired “Wafflicious” premises on Weymouth seafront, we were really looking forward to seeing the factory and the farm for the first time. Based around a 17th Century Manor House, nestled in rolling green fields, this really is an idyllic place. Tim, alias Dad, and his wife bought the then run-down farm in 1971 and have created a haven for organically fed cows and now yummy flavoured ice-cream. Tim has worked on farms all his life and clearly loves his cows. They are well looked after. Will, his

In 1988 after returning from agricultural college, Will wanted to diversify the family milk business and took up the challenge to create their first ice-cream – vanilla – which still today remains one of their best sellers. What an achievement. Originally there were around 35 cows, but now, some 30 years later there are 250 cows grazing on the 1100 acres of organically farmed land. The business is thriving. Cows are miked twice a day, once at 5am and then at 4pm, seven days a week. It is a never-ending task. In between these times the happy cows merrily eat the grass in the meadows surrounding the house, factory and newly built warehouses which have been adorned with hundreds of solar panels. These not only save thousands of pounds

in electricity costs (and who would say no to that these days?) but are very eco-friendly. Planting trees, keeping bees and really taking care of the environment is at the heart of Marshfield’s philosophy. It really is a family affair with the grandchildren now running the factory and the farm, with their parents and grandparents. So, we met the cows that eat the grass, that produce the milk that makes the ice-cream, that you eat! What a production line. The dog ice-cream is a real winner. One of the best on the market and full of nutrients for our four-legged friends, Marshfield literally make thousands of these tubbed delights every week. We even met Scoop who is the face of the ice-cream! Of course, it would have been rude not to devour some of the delicious ice-cream ourselves, before leaving. Emma, who works very hard in our parlour, had a little too much and could hardly eat her dinner! I think she can be forgiven as all of the flavours are just delicious. The ice-cream parlour there, with bales of straw to sit on and slowly enjoy the creamy treats, is open at weekends to visitors during the summer, so if you fancy a bit of indulgence and a wonderful drive,

Even the cows are licking their lips! then we highly recommend a trip to the farm. Of course, there is our very own parlour too, opposite the helter skelter on the Esplanade in Weymouth. “Wafflicious Weymouth” is its name and is not only home to mouthwatering Marshfield ice-cream, but also light and delectable waffles. We have some wonderful reviews on Facebook and are delighted with all the smiles and happy faces we see every day. With regular visitors now from near and far, we are extremely pleased with what we have achieved in just four months. We are not quite a Marshfield Farm success story yet, but who knows… time will tell. A present from our four-wheeled friend who loves his icecream too! We do hope you have a fantastic summer. May you get out and about and treat yourself. Julia’s House, the Dorset and Wiltshire Children’s Hospice charity is seeking volunteers to help out at its friendly high street shops in Poole, Broadstone and Bransgore. Julia’s House relies on volunteers throughout the week to run its shops, and is looking for anyone who would like to help out on the tills, sort donations and ensure customers are kept informed about the charity’s work. Volunteering has lots of benefits from building confidence to reducing stress and is a great way to make friends and have fun, whatever your age. If you’re looking to take the next step on the career ladder it’s also an opportunity to gain extra experience or fill a gap in your skillset. Anneka Grayson, Volunteer Coordinator for Julia’s House, said. “You don’t have to have experience to be a volunteer at Julia’s House as we provide all the training you will require. You just need to be friendly, reliable and 50

have the confidence to talk to our customers and make them feel welcome. We would love to hear from anyone who has a few hours to spare.” Julia’s House is your local children’s hospice, looking after the most seriously ill children in Dorset and Wiltshire, who need 24 hour care for their complex and often rare medical conditions. Lasting Power

of Attorneys

What happens if you don’t have a Power of Attorney? Arranging a Power of Attorney before it’s too late is critical to avoiding heartache for friends and family later. None of us likes to think about a time in life when we are no longer able to make our own decisions. But should that moment come, it will affect every part of your life – from your home and your finances to your medical care and welfare. It’s shocking to realise that as many as 1 in 3 people over the age of 65 will suffer from dementia, and of course, an unexpected accident can strike at any time. So, setting up a Power of Attorney is the sensible solution. If you haven’t made the right preparations, it’s your family and friends who will be left to sort everything out, as they try to take best care of you. When, and only when you feel it’s necessary, your Power of Attorney can be activated to enable someone you trust to step in and take key decisions for you. Your Attorney’s must always make all decisions in your best interests and they are duty bound to follow the guidelines set out in the Mental Capacity Act 2005. You are able to restrict the sort of decisions your attorneys can make for you or you can allow them to make all decisions on your behalf. Lasting Power of Attorneys are legally recognised by all financial institutions, care homes and local authorities as well as tax, benefits and pension authorities. With our life expectancy increasing year on year the need for Lasting Power of Attorneys in the future will significantly increase, so don’t get caught out at your time of need.

Worried about potential future care fees? Want to protect your children’s inheritance? See our tailored packages to cover all eventualities.

Colour Conflict The fashion experts seem to be at odds with one another. Some believe autumn and winter fashion will retain the pastel shades that have patterned so much summer sheen; others are ready to embrace the greys and blacks of rainy days that will surely follow as the months trip by. Which suits you best? Look great in greys Sustainability has been a massive theme on the runways for a good few years now, yet the colours on show have often gone against a mood of caution and care. That’s why the adoption of grey shades is an interesting shift in 2022, with designers intimating the colour represents a change of pace, where thought and intelligence in grey knocks back the buoyant, acidic tones that patterned the shop windows in previous years. Black to basics While, in the past, black has found itself mixed with bright shades to provide contrast, for the latter months of 2022 the message is to embrace the very darkest, deepest and shiniest elements of this moody colour. Ink blacks are the perfect exemplar of this image according to the fashion houses, with a typically neutral

54

colour being encouraged to take centre stage. Keeping in with pinks and purples Once considered the choice of the very old, the very young or the reckless, pinks and purples is very much in. From dusky and elegant pinks at Marc Jacobs, to more violent blue and peach shades at Matty Bovan, the beautifully coloured tones have spread right the way through to hair colour. Yellows and oranges The lighter the pastel shades you adopt, the more you need to factor in the limitations of paler complexions. That said, lighter tones perfectly complement delicate shades such as dreamy lilacs (whereas darker skins look fab with bold yellows and rich peach hues). Nature’s nod Any kind of green or blue shade generally feels more outrageous when it comes to our clothes colours, but these can still retain a feminine edge, particularly

when you choose a lighter tint. Beige has had its day The move to brown in recent years is as a direct reaction to beige, which many consider has been overdone in the past couple of years. While beige offers a versatility that brown doesn’t, the fashionistas have put their weight behind a brazenly 1970s look. And don’t forget about… white While other colours and tones may be tipped to dominate, the old favourite white will always be cleaning up in the background. Famously versatile, endlessly expressive and with more shades and variations than any other colour, the only downside to white is the washing powder bill!

Rainer Becker’s Seared Tuna on a bed of spicy red onions, with a chilli ponzu sauce and fried garlic Introduction Germany-born Rainer Becker honed his craft in Tokyo before making his name in London with the celebrated Japanese restaurant Zuma. I didn’t have the inspiration of a famous chef to become one myself. I think when I first helped my mum, I probably was six or seven years old. I didn’t know anything about cooking, so the inspiration came really from the products. I liked going in the garden, picking strawberries and cherries, and that fascination went up another level when I discovered the incredible flavours and tastes of Asia. That’s why this spicy seared tuna recipe means so much to me – it combines so many intense yet complementary flavours, and every time I cook this it transports me off to a different culture and different place.

Ingredients (serves 4) For the tuna • 800g tuna loin • 500ml ponzu sauce • 100g chilli daikon • 80g spring onions – thinly sliced • 20g deep fried garlic For the chilli braised red onions • 5 red onions • 100ml soy sauce • 100ml rice vinegar

Method

1. Cut the tuna into blocks, season and sear in a very hot pan with a little oil until coloured. The tuna should be raw apart from the outside 2-3mm. Place on a lined tray and refrigerate. For the onions, sweat off the finely chopped garlic, ginger and dried chillies for a few moments, then add the sliced red onions and cook till semitransparent.

• 100ml sake • 60g caster sugar • 12g ginger – finely chopped • 2 garlic cloves – thinly chopped • 1½ dried red chillies – large (seeds removed)

64

2. Add the soy, sake, rice vinegar and sugar and bring to the boil, remove from the heat and strain, then allow to cool on trays. The onions should still be al dente, spicy and a little sweet.

3. Thinly slice the spring onions. Fry off the sliced garlic till crisp and golden brown and grate the chilli daikon. 4. Place a pile of the spicy onions in the centre of a salad bowl, cut the tuna into slices and roll up, then place six rolled-up slices of tuna on the onions in a pyramid shape. Add a little chilli daikon to some of the ponzu sauce and pour over the tuna, garnish with the fried garlic and sliced spring onions. Finally, finish with a small pile of extra chilli daikon.

On the road again With many of the UK’s best roads wind their way through, along and on top of stunning geological features, there are some ‘must-drive’ to be explored. 1. A838, Laxford Bridge to Tongue, Scotland Let’s start right at the top, and a road that pivots through the Highlands’ incredible natural beauty. At 77 miles it is the perfect distance to savour sea vistas and mountain landscapes, yet with an average of just 96 vehicles using it each day, you really will feel you have your own slice of tarmac. 2. The M6 Toll For those who have driven through the mess that is the M6, the sheer joy of gliding along the M6 toll is a sensation like no other. Always clear of incidents, its winding, graceful curves allow fast and satisfying driving. In fact, a recent poll found the average speed of all vehicles on the road to be 76mph, a full 6mph above the speed limit. 3. B3135, Cheddar Gorge In total, a 14-mile stretch of

winding bends and stunning Somerset scenery, the B3135 envelops drivers and passengers in its Hobbit-like charm before, finally, diving off the Mendip Hills to land tourists in the wondrous landscape that is Cheddar Gorge. With towering canyon made of Carboniferous Limestone, the cliffs arc above menacingly, yet present absolute beauty. 4. A40, Wales/England Border On the face of it a dual carriageway linking two countries, but the road that skips through Pencraig, Whitchurch and Monmouth burrows deep into the Wye Valley, flanking its river, and can be likened to the

experience of a rollercoaster ride through the Canadian Rockies. 5. A592, Windermere to Penrith Better known as the Kirkstone Pass, this incredible route reaches almost 1,500ft, with spectacular valley views, drystone walls and wonderful winding roads. 6. The Snake Pass Edging through the Peak District towards Glossop, the Snake Pass is true to its name in offering a slithering track often seen on car adverts. The tranquillity of the spot is what draws drivers in, with elevation and adverse camber testing driving skills to the max.

human wellbeing, so produces something of a ‘double dividend’.

2. Loving the lift share The trend to work from home has lowered work-based commuter footprint, but for those who still have to travel, lift-sharing is a really impactful way to make a difference.

4. Keep the lawn long While it’s tempting to want to keep our lawns looking trim and pristine, longer grass means preserving the lifespan of pollinating insects and bees, which means the wildness of your garden can thrive as nature would prefer.

3. Work less Along the same lines, researchers and strategists have found that, as a whole, the less we work, the fewer greenhouse gas emissions, and the lower our ecological footprint. On a human level too, bolstering environmental sustainability comes with the side-effect of a boost to

5. Eat less meat Meat and dairy combined are responsible for over 15% of climate-changing gases – that’s more than the contribution made by transport – so cutting down on that

Sunday roast is actually having a positive effect on the environment (as well as your waistline). 6. Shop less It is thought that a better understanding over expiration dates, and a greater reliance on our senses when it comes to working out whether food is safe to eat or not, would have a dramatic positive effect on food waste and, by association, the environment itself.

Dorset Sunflower Trail is back for another year... Maiden Castle Farm is running a major fundraising event for the second year running supporting two important charities.

The farm will create a spectacular sunflower trail which will raise funds for the DCH Kingfisher Ward and Cherkasy Hospital in Ukraine. Half the profits generated by the trail will be donated by the farm, to be shared equally between these two chosen charities. This year organiser Hazel Hoskin is working closely with Dorchester Town Council on a range of additional events and activities in Dorchester, all based around the theme of sunflowers. Visitors will be encouraged to visit Dorchester town centre from mid July to see spectacular sunflower sculptures suspended across South Street. There will also be sunflower themed shop windows across the town as local retailers join in with the activities. Dorchester’s beautiful Borough Gardens will be a popular venue as it showcases a range of sunflower varieties which have been specially grown to highlight the beauty of these amazing flowers. The main event will happen in August at Maiden Castle Farm itself, when the sunflower crop is fully grown and in all its glory. The sunflower trail created on the farm will be a highlight for many people, especially the many thousands who visited the attraction last summer. The Main Trail will take an estimated 40 minutes but there will also be a shorter trail for any visitors with accessibility requirements. The attraction will include a photograph competition, opportunities for sundowner sessions, Pilates in the sunflowers and more to be announced. To boost the green credentials of the event, visitors will be encouraged to follow a special scenic path all the way from Dorchester’s town centre to the heart of the trail – a distance of about 1.5 miles. All this in the farm’s amazing location nestled at the foot of the historic Maiden Castle – the largest prehistoric hill fort in England. You are invited to bring a picnic and enjoy dining next

68

to one of the largest and most complex Iron Age Hillforts in Europe. Following your visit to the Trail, access to the Maiden Castle Hillfort (which is maintained by English Heritage) is free and further exploration is suggested for a different viewpoint of the Sunflowers and panoramic views of the Dorset Countryside. Hazel Hoskin said: “It was a fantastic seeing the thousands of people who visited the farm last year to experience the sunflowers. We heard about many examples of people making special memories there and with their support we raised a lot of money for the special care unit at DCH. With all the sunflowers in the town centre we think this year will be even better and we hope that even more people will come along and join in the excitement.” Hazel is also working with some local Schools to get families across the town growing sunflowers in their own gardens. They will use seeds collected from the sunflowers grown on Maiden Castle Farm last year. #sunflowersuperhighway Dorchester Town Council are funding the town centre sunflower sculptures and organising the sunflower shop window display competition. They are looking forward to all the colour and spectacle this will bring to the town this summer, providing even more for visitors to experience and enjoy. A member of Dorchester Town Council said, “It is brilliant to be able to work with Maiden Castle Farm and shops across the town to create such a great attraction and raise money for local and Ukrainian causes. We have all been devastated to see the events unfolding in Ukraine and the sunflower is the Ukrainian National flower too. All of these sunflowers are going to be so beneficial for local bees and biodiversity too.” Tickets will go on Sale in July 2022. When the cows come home Can you imagine Liam Gallagher espousing the virtue of a perfectly blended Coquetdale? Or Jarvis Cocker enthusing for hours on the subject of Wensleydale? Maybe not, but Blur’s Alex James has proven that there can be a career after Britpop in the world of artisan cheese. Former Blur bassist and now cheese artisan Alex James is adamant that actually there’s little difference between being at the forefront of the Cool Britannia movement and getting stuck in on his Oxfordshire farm in order to create award-winning dairy produce. “All business is tough; as a musician I had to fight for everything I wanted and now I still have to fight for everything I want,” the 53-year-old begins. “If you do something that’s truly great then that puts you in a very strong negotiating position. So you’ve got to start

70

with something that you really believe in and which is great, or just tell everyone to go stuff it! I’m happy to play with anyone on that basis.” James can now boast of two separate cheese ranges – the opulent creamy Shropshire blues and soft goats’ cheeses, along with the everyday series that boasts unusual flavour combinations like cheddar and tikka masala, or even ketchup. Yet the move from the stage to the 200-acre plot in Kingham got off to a near-perilous start. “When we bought the farm 15 years ago, it was the worst time in history to be a farmer,” he explains. “The guy I bought it off was a beef farmer and he’d been hit by BSE – Mad Cow Disease – and foot and mouth; it had been a horrendous time for farming and agriculture.

“Thankfully, the whole picture has changed now, and if you can find a niche as a farmer there’s never been a better time. If you can find something that nobody else is doing and do it well, there’s a real appetite for great food.” While his former band shaped a generation of music that was as indisputably and inherently British as a bulldog drinking a cup of tea, James’ organic inspirations are more inspired by his food love affair with the continent. “I love going to France – you see farmers’ markets with some old boy selling the apples he’s picked and they’re completely delicious,” he explains. “That’s how you want to buy an apple – off somebody who’s been growing apples all their lives and knows everything about it. I love the culture of farmers’ markets. I think we are getting it back here and it’s brilliant for farmers – if you can sell what you make directly to the person who is going to eat it, that’s the best possible way of doing it.”

One man went to mow The best lawnmowers on the market to help you keep your grass looking great. We all love a beautifully manicured lawn, though who would have suspected there is such choice when it comes to a simple trim? Lawnmower types Rotary A rotary lawnmower has a single high-speed rotating blade that cuts grass with a chopping motion. It is versatile on uneven terrains and can cope with tough grass. Cylinder While a cylinder lawnmower has multiple blades to produce a perfectionist, precise cut, it much prefers flat, show-piece lawns, and will give a superior finish on neat gardens. Battery This battery-driven top-ranker is notable for its safety aspect, namely there is no chord, but performance-wise it’s right up there with corded and fuel versions, where in the past it lacked durability and longevity. Petrol/diesel While there is still a place for the fuel-driven lawnmower, it’s mostly in the sense of tending to large areas of land, typically ride-on vehicles. Robot Robot mowers are certainly satisfying our love of AI and the employment of tech to make life

72

that bit easier, with no human margin of error. TOP PICKS: Budget Flymo Speedimo Corded Rotary Lawnmower (around £130) With a Flymo you know what you’re going to get. Clunky and noisy, it does however come from a brand that’s renowned for performance, and the chances are your trusty cutting machine will still be going strong a decade from now. Premium Allett Kensington 14B Petrol Cylinder Mower (around £1,500) Built with quality, solidity and purpose in mind, the Allet Kensington won’t win any awards for aesthetics… although once it’s done its work, your lawn might! A petrol, cylinder motor, this flattens as it cuts, and comes with interchangeable cylinders which suit the sort of look or effect you’re aiming at. Petrol Stihl RM 448 Petrol Lawnmower (around £600) Self-propelling and, given it’s petrol-based, longevity guaranteed. You may find you don’t need to fling this machine around your lawn for too long

though – its hardworking, has multiple variable settings, and gets the job done with the minimum of fuss. Best overall Mountfield Princess 38Li Cordless Lawn Mower (around £400) Perfect for small- to mediumsized gardens, the Mountfield is also light and, of course, battery powered. It has six pre-set cutting heights and is renowned for its quiet operation. Robot Husqvarna Automower 405 (around £1,850) An expensive machine, but time is money, and what you invest now, you undoubtedly save in being able to pursue other things in life. The Husqvarna is quiet, efficient and offers a brilliant finish.

Velvet Dreams

Once again, velvet is the fabric of the season, but like all interior trends, it’s important you get the perfect balance for your home. Simple appeal Velvet is the timeless material that patterns and makes perfect such a range of items, despite having a largely streamlined appeal – the way it feels. Regardless of the fact what most of us admire about the fabric is simply that sensation on our hands, there is a deeper sensual nature about velvet. It also adds warmth, offers a depth of colour, and paints a subtle luxuriousness to any home. Perhaps what stands out most about velvet though is its ability to cross over so many different moods and styles. It is timeless in its appeal and can look as good in a stately home as it does in a trendy nightclub! Following the trend The main consideration is colour – too much scarlet or purple velvet and you might feel trapped in some eternal cabaret; but lilac, midnight blue, forest green and mustard add sophistication and warmth. People with kids and pets ought to stick to the darker end of the spectrum, or perhaps choose to use velvet in areas that are less accessible to those who might damage it. Furniture and flashes In terms of the items that showcase velvet best, most people will automatically think about a classically styled sofa or chaise longue. Complemented with velvet cushions using contrasting colours, you can turn a simple sofa into

74

a statement piece in the room. In addition, velvet bed frames and banquettes are available in a range of very modern styles, and can add a real touch of class to the bedroom in the right shade. Alternatively, feel free to play around with flashes of the fabric here and there, either with curtains or lampshades, or even just a very subtle velvet trim. You could also combine the look with the current texture trend. Think leather sofas with velvet cushions, wooden beds with linen sheets and velvet throws, or a stone mantlepiece adorned with quilted photo frames. Maintenance While velvet is made with the use of vertical yarn and takes multiple steps to produce, there is a common misconception that it’s difficult to maintain. In most cases though, looking after it is as easy as any other fabric. That means mopping up any spillages as soon as they happen (and definitely not letting them sink into the cloth base), vacuuming with a sofa brush to work away dust and any driedin crumbs, and using light steam to bring fibres back to life. Also consider if a part of your velvet sofa will take in more sunlight than another part, as the fabric is susceptible to fading.

Raymond Blanc’s Lemon Cake Introduction Lemon cake with tea is a grand tradition at Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons, and it has been served here for almost 40 years. What I love about the perfect lemon cake is it’s fresh, zesty and as light as a cloud.

Ingredients (serves 8) For the lemon cake • butter, to grease the tin • 5 eggs • 300g caster sugar • 140ml double cream • finely grated zest of 3 lemons • 25ml dark rum • 1 pinch sea salt • 80g unsalted butter, melted • 240g plain flour • ½ tsp baking powder For the glaze • 50g apricot jam, warmed • finely grated zest of 1 lemon, plus 3 tbsp juice • 150g icing sugar

2. Sift the flour and baking powder together, then whisk into the egg mixture until smooth, spooning the mixture into the loaf tin and gently level the surface. Bake for 50 minutes, turning the tin around halfway through cooking. To test the cake, insert a small knife into the middle – if it comes out clean, the cake is cooked. 3. Turn out onto a wire rack and leave to cool for 10 minutes. 4. Lightly brush the cake all over with the warm jam. The jam creates a barrier, so the lemon glaze is not absorbed. Leave for 5 minutes.

5. Now mix the lemon zest and juice with the icing sugar in a small pan and warm over a low heat to 35°C, until smooth. If the glaze is any hotter, it will recrystallise, losing its shine and crispness. Brush the lemon glaze evenly over the top and sides of the cake and leave for a few minutes to set. 6. Finally, place the cake on a baking tray in the oven, turn off the heat and leave for 3–5 minutes to dry the glaze – it will become translucent. Allow to cool before slicing.

1. Lightly grease the loaf tin and line with greaseproof paper. Then, in a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, sugar, cream, lemon zest, rum, salt and melted butter.
