Welcome to Your May Issue. This month’s welcome comes with a big smile, as National Smile Month 2019 takes place between May 13th and June 13th. This is the U.K.’s largest and longest-running campaign, to promote good oral health. At times we struggle to find things to warrant a smile, (no references this month to Brexit,remember!) so it’s worth remembering that it’s much easier to smile than it is to frown. Don’t forget … life is like a mirror- we get the best results when we smile at it! The breadth of subjects covered in our “Discovering” magazines is often a favourable comment which comes our way. Our regular contributors never cease to amaze with their enthusiasm, knowledge and ability to produce something both readable and most useful. Many thanks to them and to you for the messages of support and kind words we receive.

Already a third of the year gone and a few days of serious sunshine have brought out the shorts and shades, but then fleeces have soon followed! This beautiful time of the year sees new life re-emerge from winter, and gardens become a kaleidoscope of colour … unless your dogs are like ours and your patch resembles a First World War battlefield – mud, craters … the lot! We can now look forward to longer and warmer days, especially when two of them are Bank Holidays, where we can hopefully enjoy some quality time together with family and friends. Our Events section can be, as ever, your first port of call for that special event to attend. Let’s hope that this month’s collection of articles and wise words from our knowledgeable contributors will help you make the most of what is on offer in the weeks ahead. The Market Deeping Mayor’s Ball
On Saturday April 6th, the Mayor and Mayoress of Market Deeping, David and Nicky Shelton held their Mayor’s Charity Ball. The event was to celebrate a successful year, and to thank those who had helped with their achievements. The prime role of the mayor is to be the public face of, and to promote, the Town Council and the town itself to many parties, including other levels of government, and to a wide area of neighbouring local government. The memorable evening was created by hosting it, as the inaugural event at Sissons Barn at Peakirk, with an exquisite meal from the “Dog in a Doublet” restaurant at Thorney, and dance music from the local band, “Off the Record”. The event was a sell-out of 120 tickets, in tables of ten. There

were three tables of civic dignitaries from four counties; four tables from local businesses, including the event sponsor, DNA Scaffolding; two tables of local residents; one table sponsored by InvestSk, hosted by their Chief Executive, Steve Bowyer; and two tables taken by the mayor, including his invitees, family and friends. One of the main aims of the event was to raise money for the Mayor’s Charities, specifically to support children with special needs in local primary schools, and Dementia Support South Lincs. To achieve this, a Grand Raffle was held, with seven exclusive prizes, each worth hundreds of pounds, which included a beautifully crafted, unique, garden fireball created by local, renowned metalworker, Micky Culff from Deeping St James.

David commented that he and Nicky had attended over a hundred civic events over the last year, including many dinners and dances, and he believes that this one was the best. This was summed up by one guest as they left at the end, saying, “That was a damned good party!”

MAY Gardening Tips “Ne’er cast a clout till May be out,” says the old English proverb. We sometimes get lulled into a false sense of security and think that summer has arrived, but watch the weather in case of late frosts, and protect any tender seedlings. Also take care to harden off plants that have been grown indoors or under cover before planting. May is a difficult month to judge, as the weather can vary between heat and mini-drought to late frosts, heavy rain and strong winds. This month sees more pests appearing: aphids, slugs and snails will all be out in force and regard the new seedlings and young plants as a scrummy free meal, sampling your crops before you have chance to! A couple of ideas for repelling the varmints: Peppermint, spearmint and pennyroyal naturally deter aphids and ants, so plant (or put them in pots) throughout the vegetable plot. Plant flowers that attract the pest predators such as marigolds and nasturtiums. Some of us only set aside a small plot for growing fruit and vegetables so, to maximise your space, you can try: • Intercropping – sowing two crops in the same row, one slow and one fast growing. Fast growing crops include Oriental salad leaves, lettuces, radishes, spring onions, spinach and spring-planted shallots. Slow growers are parsnips, sweetcorn, tomatoes, leeks, winter cabbage, cauliflower, sprouting broccoli and Brussels sprouts. • Catch Cropping – sowing a fast-growing crop in the brief period a plot might be empty. Other jobs to do this month include: • Earth up potatoes. • Cover carrots with netting to stop carrot fly damage. • Harden off and plant out vegetables sown earlier. • Pot on growing plants. • Put up bean and pea supports. • Pick flowers off new strawberries to prevent them cropping in their first year. • When watering young plants and seedlings, it is better to water less frequently but more thoroughly as this gets down to the roots. If you water lightly, it may only wet the surface of the soil and the roots may be encouraged to stay near the surface where they are more likely to suffer from drought damage. • Seeds to sow out this month are too numerous to list but a few include carrots, beetroot, French beans, lettuce, spring onions, salad leaves and peas. • Try “succession sowing” a small batch of seeds every two or three weeks, and you should have a steady supply rather than a glut: it will also help to maximise your chances of successful germination. • Indoors, you can sow chillies, courgettes and squashes, runner beans, sweetcorn, aubergines and cabbages. hen looking for a bigger home with more space, people often get concerned about how much it will cost to take on a larger property. While a higher cost is naturally unavoidable when beginning this house-hunting journey, it really can make a huge difference to you and your family’s lives, giving you all that little bit more room to grow. Needing more room for family and friends to stay Often, one of the triggers that inspires the desire to move somewhere bigger is having guests come to stay for a visit, especially the in-laws. Change is Coming in Matrimonial Law
There was some good news during April regarding our divorce laws. The old so-called “Fault” based system, which has survived untouched for forty-six years, is to be changed. The parties will only need to state that the marriage has broken down “irretrievably.” This means that they will no longer need to argue “unreasonable behaviour”, comprising four or five allegations which can inflame a relationship at a time when matters are already strained. Further “adultery” will not need to be argued, nor “desertion” or “two year” or “five year” separation. Most practitioners will agree that these changes are long overdue. This leaves the parties to concentrate on resolving the finances. All parties are encouraged to seek guidance from ‘Relate’ if there is a prospect of saving a relationship, so a balance is to be struck between preserving what can still be saved as against unnecessarily making an emotional atmosphere worse by damaging allegations. The
government has said that it will now change the law. However, the old system survives until that time. What is always going to be crucial is that the parties should give serious consideration to obtain a Financial Order to protect them in relation to the monetary matters and property issues in the marriage. If they do not do that, they will potentially be
vulnerable to the other applying to court for such an Order, perhaps many years later, long after they have tried to move on. Sometimes, it is possible to obtain a so called “Clean Break” Order which confirms the agreement reached but closes the door as to further claims between the parties. As with most things, everything depends on the facts of the case, and legal advice should always be taken.

Pregnancy Should Not Lead to “Unfair Dismissal” Citizens Advice clients contact us with an amazingly wide variety of issues, and people’s rights change regularly as laws are updated. In April, a new discrimination toolkit was launched on the national website, and a link to this is given below.

The kind of queries encountered include possible discrimination when an employee announces a pregnancy. Advice given by Citizens Advice is that it doesn’t matter how long someone has been working for an employer, being fired because of pregnancy, or pregnancy-related issues, is automatically classed as “unfair dismissal”. If an employer finds out an employee who has a previously good record is pregnant, and then sacks them for poor performance, the employee is right to be suspicious, and if the employer says the dismissal has nothing to do with having a baby, the employee will need to prove that it was, and can ask the employer to send written reasons for the dismissal. If the employee wants to challenge the dismissal, they can take the case to an employment tribunal. They should first raise a grievance with the employer and contact the Advisory Conciliation and Arbitration Service about ‘Early Conciliation’. Speed is important, as time limits in employment tribunals are short. To prepare for the tribunal, the employee should gather as much evidence as possible. This includes e-mails with the employer about the pregnancy, previous performance appraisals, and correspondence about the dismissal. The new Citizens Advice discrimination toolkit, found on the website at www.citizensadvice.org.uk/advisernet/work/ discrimination-at-work can help with this. The Citizens Advice service in Bourne takes place at Wake House, on Thursdays between 10am and 3pm. Clients are offered a five minute initial check, followed by an appointment at a later time or date if appropriate. In the Deepings the service includes a drop-in fifteen minute assessment at the New Community Centre, Market Deeping on Wednesday mornings, before an afternoon appointment, if needed, or a referral to Deeping St James fortnightly on Thursdays, where the United Charities have funded an outreach at the Institute, on 38 Church Street.

Cybercrime – Don’t Fall Foul of the Online Fraudsters

CYBERCRIME has reached epidemic levels in the UK – with police reporting that more than £190,000 a day is lost by victims. The hacking of social media and e-mail accounts is rife, and according to Action Fraud, (which is run by the City of London Police), £34.6million was reported to be stolen from victims between April and September 2018; an increase of 24% on the previous six months. Over 13,000 people in the UK reported cybercrimes over the six months, with more than 5,000 of those having had their social media or e-mail accounts hacked – costing victims £14.8 million. Closer to home, an initiative to crackdown on scammers across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, and aim to make the county scam-free, is gaining momentum. Safe Local Trades is delighted to be supporting the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Against Scams Partnership (CAPASP), which is committed to working towards stamping out scams; from postal to online fraud to telephone scams and doorstep rogue traders. In the case of cybercrime, fraudsters trick internet and e-mail users into giving personal details, including financial information, in order to steal their money. Some kinds of online scams to be aware of: • Phishing: where you receive an e-mail that pretends to be from an authority (e.g., your bank) in which you’re asked to give out your passwords or personal information such as your address, telephone number, or other data. • Pharming: the fraudulent practice of directing online users to a fake website, which mimics the appearance of a real/ legitimate one. • Romance Scams: a confidence scam whereby a criminal displays fake romantic intentions towards a victim in order to gain their affection to then extort money. • Impersonation of UK officials: criminals impersonate a UK official to obtain personal information by claiming that the victim is due a refund or must make an urgent payment. • File Hijacking: where a hacker enters your computer and accesses your files, locking you out of them. The hacker then demands a ransom (usually money) before he will give you your files back. • Screenshot Managing: where hackers enter your computer and take screenshots of your display. This can help them get information about you, get passwords, or even blackmail you. • Keylogging: where hackers can record your keystrokes on your computer, thus gaining your passwords or other personal information. • Ad Clicking: where hackers encourage you to click on a link (perhaps by e-mail, or on a webpage) which will then open malware or simply ask for your personal information. However, you can take steps to help protect yourself. • Ensure that your devices all have up-to-date anti-virus security. • Install a firewall and anti-spyware on your computer. • Ensure that you update your software (including Windows or iOS) when prompted to do so; postponing an update can leave you vulnerable. • Ensure that your devices are password-protected with a strong password - you can find the official governmental advice on creating passwords at www.cyberaware.gov.uk/passwords. If you think you or a loved one may have been the victim of a scam, report it to Action Fraud at www.actionfraud.police.uk . Oddfellows Give Youth Group Huge Cash Boost After News of Council Cuts After months of fundraising quizzes, the Nene and Welland Branch of the Oddfellows has raised £3,000 for Deepings Youth Group, which is based on Eastgate.

The local friendship society chose Deepings Youth Group as their charity of the year after hearing about huge government cuts which would prevent the Youth Club from receiving any council funding. This amount was raised by Oddfellows members and guests over the past twelve months through raffles, dinners and events, and will contribute towards the running costs involved in providing a safe and welcoming space for young people.

Great Britain has a rich history of carpet design and manufacturing, combining the long established tradition of sheep farming, with the advances in technology during the Industrial Revolution of the eighteenth century. There were many British manufacturers who helped shape the industry into what it is today, and there are many who continue to do so, whether it be with daring designs and striking colour combinations or just maintaining that high standard that they are renowned for. Here is a brief insight into the ‘who’s who’ of the British carpet manufacturing world. Brintons: A manufacturer who has been operating since 1783, they have the history behind them to cement themselves as one of the top British manufacturers, developing colours in their studio and specialising in woven carpets. They produce Wilton - a textured plain and Axminster – carpets with incredibly detailed patterns which are the ‘gold standard’. Penthouse Carpets: Established over forty years ago, Penthouse Carpets are renowned for manufacturing high quality, wool-rich, tufted carpets. Discovering . . . The pack horse bridge

B
ridges date back to the earliest times when even the most primitive communities created crossings over rivers and streams following their favourite paths to make hunting and gathering easier, using whatever materials there were to hand such as fallen trees. These constructions were basic until the Romans came up with an architectural device over 2,000 years ago to carry a path over a narrow width known as the Roman arch, thus providing the fundamental principle on which all future bridges were based. The pack horse bridge is one such development, built to carry pack horses loaded with side bags or panniers across a river rather than take the long way round which could involve a diversion of many miles. Such bridges therefore have narrow masonry arches and low parapets in order not to interfere with the horse’s load and were often built on the trade routes across Europe, a design also followed in England before the coming of the turnpike roads and canals in the 18th century, and the Deeping Gate bridge which crosses the River Welland on the B1162 is popularly known by that name. This 17th century structure built mainly of limestone has three arches with half round parapets and stands on the parish boundary between Deeping Gate and Deeping

St James. Refuges or alcoves were placed over each of the cut-waters or forward edges of the piers where, as the name implies, horses loaded with goods could wait to enable carts and carriages to pass. The bridge dates from 1651 and is now Grade II listed as being of historic and architectural importance although the middle arch has a brick vault and appears to have been partially rebuilt. The bridge was constructed in an age when horses for transport in all its forms ruled the highways and the structure is no longer practical for today’s continual streams of motorised traffic, the roadway over it narrowing to a mere 13 feet wide without a footpath and now carries a weight restriction of 7.5 tonnes. Despite this precaution, the stone structure has been at risk from heavy vehicles on several occasions, the last incident being in January 2015 when part of the parapet on the Deeping St James side was demolished by a lorry which left debris scattered over the road. The damage was quickly repaired and temporary safety cones placed along the carriageway as a warning to vehicles passing this way but as long as careless driving persists, further mishaps would appear to be inevitable. Crowdfunded Funerals on the Rise as Undertakers’ Fees Soar by Nick Ash, Managing Director With the average cost of a funeral now standing at £4,271, families are struggling to find the money to arrange for their loved ones’ burial or cremation. The Competition and Markets Authority launched a market study in 2018 which revealed funeral costs had increased by two-thirds in the previous ten years. For those who can’t afford it, the local authority may offer meanstested help for a funeral in some circumstances, or even arrange a basic cremation if no-one else is willing or able to arrange one. In that case, they would seek to recoup their costs from the estate later.
Crowdfunding platform, Just Giving, saw a one-third rise in crowdfunding appeals for funeral expenses in 2017/18. A page on another similar platform, Go Fund Me, was opened recently for the family of footballer and reality TV celebrity, Mike Thalassitis, after he died unexpectedly. The fund was closed after a day, having raised £5,000. Most crowdfunding appeals are started for younger decedents who have died suddenly leaving young families and little spare money – but it is not just the younger generation who pass away with no will, life insurance or estate planning in place.
Funeral costs become due at the time of making the arrangements, although some firms may delay payment if there are sufficient funds in an estate. But for those who haven’t made plans, and where there is no money available, finding thousands of pounds can be impossible. The other option is to buy a prepaid funeral plan. Glinton Horticultural Society - Your Friendly Gardening Club! Glinton Horticultural Society was formed in 1943 in conjunction with a local fete and gala, and is still going strong after all these years. In the spring we hold a Plant Sale in Glinton Village Hall – this year it will be on Saturday, May 4th. This is very popular with the public, starting at 10 o’clock and finishing at noon. There’s always a queue before we open the doors! During the summer, we organise a number of trips out to gardens or places of interest. In September, it’s time for our Annual Show. This has classes as diverse as ‘grow the heaviest pumpkin’ to the best photo of ‘people at work’. The Show is on for one afternoon and covers flowers, fruit and vegetables, baking, craft, photography, wine- and beer-making, plus a children’s section. First Steps to Finding Friendship After Losing a Partner Withdrawing socially is normal after losing a partner. WHERE NEXT FOR THE SUCCESSFUL EMPIRE IDEA? by Matt Weston
On July 14th this year we will have our fifth anniversary - a proud and significant milestone for us. Significant, because we have never pretended to know everything about the industry. We took a gamble. A big one, both in financial investment and in terms of our lack of fitness industry experience. But we backed ourselves. We backed our determination as a family and we backed our ability to work, learn, adapt and roll with the punches. And we believed in the essence of an idea - ‘The Empire Idea’, a revolutionary idea. July 14th, through coincidence rather than planning, indeed marks revolution itself, being Bastille Day. And in terms of a change of the tide and a new way of moving forward, we hope we have demonstrated as a gym and a family that there is a different way to define the meaning and purpose of a gym. We have always focussed on the fostering of community, friendliness and togetherness. Creating an environment in which people first and foremost feel comfortable. • Comfortable in their physical surroundings, due to the quality of equipment. • Comfortable in taking advice that is professional, safe, knowledgeable and aspirational. • Confident in the behaviour and demeanour of their fellow members, customers and friends.

In doing this, we have created a free flow of communication. We are able to convey our approaches and ideas to our members and customers, and importantly we are able to listen to their feedback and act on it where appropriate, while still forming our own educated and passionate opinions based on what we consider to be the direction we would like to see Empire take.
And most recently, although I cannot divulge names, we are being recommended by professional medical consultants to people who are going through serious illness and ailment who want, and indeed need, to exercise to improve their condition and therefore their prognosis. We are very proud of this part of our business. Members at Empire will know what I am referring to, as it can be seen on a daily and weekly basis. Not shouted from the rooftops, but respectfully and properly conducted as part of the daily culture here at Empire Gym. Indeed, the greatest accolade is that it is a normal and unremarkable part of any day.
I just want quickly to make note of a recent and warming trend at Empire before I go any further. We now, it seems, have a solid and wellfounded reputation for being a gym that excels in working with people with unique personal situations to overcome. People who want to pursue their determined fitness goals either because of, in spite of or inspired by physical or mental challenges and difficulties. We are working more and more with people with Multiple Sclerosis, who now work independently in the gym, navigating the terrain in their wheelchairs. We work, and have always worked, with young people with learning difficulties and on a day a week, every week, we have a superb young man at

So… What next? We do things properly but we are also keen to allow the Empire brand to grow. To expand. Indeed to be available to people who at the moment are not geographically best placed to benefit from the Deepings’ fitness jewel. I am a firm believer that community has less to do with geographical location, rather it is about bringing people together who share positive, constructive, kind and aspirational

Health ideas. And because of this there are no limits as to exactly where the Empire idea could take root and blossom again. We have had a lot of feedback through the opportunity that social media provides. We have asked the question… Who wants us across Greater Peterborough? And there are already trends. Bourne wants Empire! That is loud and clear. So this is something that is really giving us food for thought - Very exciting and indeed very humbling. It seems natural that the Deepings being Bourne’s neighbour has allowed the Bourne community to watch closely and learn about the Empire Idea. Indeed I’m sure as the two towns are so close, many friends and family members have had conversations about their Empire experiences. Crowland also want us! Which is superb and we are incredibly grateful for the feedback we have received and continue to receive from the Crowland community. Then there’s the city of Peterborough itself. Hampton, the Ortons, Central Peterborough. All have expressed their desire for us to transport our own unmistakable style of fitness culture and family culture to their area. What excites me most is the opportunity to bring people together. To bring ideas, cultures and communities together. As I have already alluded to, I believe that our business and personal approach can create a community within communities. In an age that appears to want to put division and separation in the headlines, I think Greater Peterborough and its widely diverse communities is a gift, a joy - an opportunity. With diversity of background, culture and ideas comes enrichment of relationships and friendships. With diversity of people comes knowledge, new approaches, and an opportunity to learn. Think food alone, for example. Food, diet, nutrition and the way it is woven into the tapestry of the fitness journey can
only benefit from the way cuisines across cultures differ and give us more interesting ways to eat well and to be healthy. These types of conversation permeate the daily interactions of people at Empire Gym as they share their interest and their common thread of fitness and being part of the Empire family. I’d love to bring this to new areas. So what would an extension of the Empire Brand into another part of Greater Peterborough actually look like? Well, that’s one I’m going to keep under my hat for the short term. But the idea and plan exists vividly in my mind. I can see it. The vision is there. And it would work. All I ask is that people continue to feed back to me and to us all at Empire about where we would be best advised to go next. I think it’s fair to say, five years is a reasonable period of time in which the public can make a judgement. The Empire Idea works. Therefore it can be transported. A deep-seated gym culture like ours takes time, patience and daily and hourly commitment on a macro business level, but most importantly on a micro personal level. We have done, and continue to do, that relentless but so rewarding work. The culture is real and recognised across Greater Peterborough. So the question remains…. Where next?!

The majority of people don’t fly regularly and, although getting to a hot destination for a holiday for some is enough to get them on the plane, others can begin to think of all the issues that might go wrong. If we’re already feeling stressed, our brain is great at throwing propaganda our way and making us believe something is dangerous, putting the brain into “fight or flight mode”. This then is triggered particularly when we don’t like doing something like flying. So, if you have a phobia about taking to the skies, perhaps solution focused hypnotherapy can help you feel calmer, more confident and relaxed about that next flight. “Feet are extremely complex,” Amy says, “but there are five really simple things people can do to maximise foot health”. 1. Wear the right shoes “It sounds obvious, but wearing good quality and well-fitting shoes is really important,” advises Amy. Poor footwear can cause common problems like corns and calluses, but can also contribute to more chronic, biomechanical disorders like plantar fasciopathy (heel pain). Feet also expand over the course of a day, so another tip is to avoid shoe shopping in the morning, or you may find that your new shoes are too tight by the afternoon! 2. CHARGRILLED POTATO SALAD Warmer days can only mean one thing - barbecues! Jersey Royals are firmly in season so give your humble potato salad a crispy, smokey edge with this tasty recipe...
Method
• Boil the potatoes in a pan for around 10 mins or until just tender; drain. • If using a gas barbecue, preheat to medium-high, or if using charcoal wait until the coals are glowing and the flames have died down. Grill the potatoes for 10-15 mins, turning often, until crisp and golden.
Ingredients Serves 6 1.25kg new potatoes, halved
• Mix the remaining ingredients and season. Stir in the potatoes and serve.

Mother’s Day Competition Winner In our March issue, we asked you if you had a mum in a million and what it was that made her so special for you. School News Deeping St James Community Primary School The last month has brought about some great successes at DSJ and many exciting events. Right at the beginning of March, the school took part in the Peterborough Drama Festival. We entered children from as young as five-years-old right up to elevenyear-olds with great success. Our Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 Choral Speaking Classes won their age group categories. In addition, the children won cups in two prose reading classes, a group acting class and a group mime class. The Peterborough Drama Festival is a great event that runs every year and the children benefit greatly from it. On the sporting front, our cross country teams have been doing excellently in the local area cross country event, winning both the Year 5/6 and Year 3/4 girls cross country team trophies.
The school has also had a great World Book Day and a whole school Science Day, where children and adults alike took part in a range of awe-inspiring investigations. As you may know, DSJ is passionate about music, with our Spring Concert taking place in the next couple of weeks. Mrs Young and her team work tirelessly to ensure that children at DSJ, and across the cluster of schools in the Deepings area, enjoy and perform music. Deeping St James United Charities have always financially supported our musical endeavours and they have recently agreed to support us, by funding certain projects across the cluster of schools for the next two years. Rotarians Join Forces to Help School Pupils at Willoughby School in Bourne can look forward to an activity break this summer, thanks to the generosity of two Rotary Clubs.

Willoughby School is a special school for pupils with moderate, severe, profound and complex learning needs and, last year, the Rotary Club of the Deepings teamed up with the Rotary Club of Bourne to sponsor a trip for eight pupils from the school to go to Caythorpe PGL Activity Centre for three days.
Willoughby School headteacher, James Husbands, and trip leader Nicola Hill recently attended a meeting of the Deepings Rotary Club to give a presentation on last year’s trip. This was illustrated by pictures showing the wide range of activities the students took part in, from kayaking to raft building, archery to fencing, even having the exciting opportunity to glide through the air on a zip wire!
The trip was so successful that the two Rotary clubs have again agreed to sponsor another trip
Mr Husbands described the trip as a fantastic experience, and he thanked the two Rotary clubs for

Lilly Smashes Two Midland Times at Grantham Grand Prix Deepings Swimming Club celebrated round two of the Grantham Grand Prix with a pair of ‘Midland Qualifying Times’ and a host of personal bests as the squad of thirty competed against swimmers from across Lincolnshire. Lilly Tappern achieved a perfect hat-trick of personal bests, and also swam her way to two Midland Times, (in the 11 years, 50m butterfly and the 200m freestyle.) Her other personal best came in the 50m backstroke. In the boys 12 years age group, Alex Sadler achieved two topthree finishes, in the 50m freestyle and in the 200IM. Lucia Karic excelled in the 10 years, winning the 50m backstroke and finishing second in the 200m freestyle. Also showing well in the girls 10 years age group was Grace Edwards. The butterfly was one of the girls’ strongest events of the evening with another four swimmers, (Millie Bussey, Maya Sangiorgio, Holly Griffin and Alice Dovey) achieving new personal bests to finish in may 2019

Completing an outstanding evening for the girls was Ella Gerrard in the 12 years age group. The boys’ team put in some strong performances across the age groups. In the 9 years category, William Burdock set a new personal best in the 100IM. Lewis Tarver led the way for the 10 years boys with a pair of personal bests, while Louis Sanderson took an incredible sixteen seconds off his 200IM time in the 11 years age group. Also notable, in the 50m freestyle, was Ryan Weise in the 12 years age group. Deepings Swimming Club Assistant Coach Zoe Fisher
said, “We had a real mix of experience in the squad, with many younger swimmers and a few who have competed plenty of times before. School News Deepings School Space-A-Holics “Over the Moon” in International Lego Challenge On Saturday February 16th, a team of eight students from the Deepings School took part in the UK final of the First Lego League. The team named themselves “Space-A-Holics” and had previously won the regional heat, which took place at Park Air Systems in Market Deeping. The First Lego League is an international competition, with an estimated participation of 500,000 young people, aged between ten and sixteen. The competition itself requires the team to take part in four challenges, namely: Core Values – How well do they work as a team and how do they interact with other teams? Project – The team research and present a unique solution to a problem associated with the challenge for this year. The challenge this year had a space theme. Robot Game – Using only Lego branded bricks and a Lego Mindstorms kit, the students build and

programme an autonomous robot to complete as many tasks as they can in 2 ½ minutes. Robot Design – The students have to present their robot to a panel of engineers and discuss how they designed the robot to meet the challenges on the board. The Lego League final was held in Bristol at the University of the West of England Conference Centre. The team arrived to be greeted by a television crew who interviewed them live for a worldwide broadcast. During the day, the team performed really well, especially in the project, where the judges said that they thought they were the most professional team that they had seen in their section of judging. The main part of the day was spent on the Robot board, with three rounds of challenges, and the team eventually finishing in eighth place. At the award ceremony, whilst the team were not successful in gaining one of the four major trophies, they were presented with the judges’ award. This award recognises consistent performance across all four categories, without winning one of them. The team were over the moon with this award. Baston C. of E. Primary School On Thursday March 7th, we celebrated World Book Day and Farming Week at school. The theme for our World Book Day was ‘Traditional Tales’, where children came dressed up as well-known characters from “The Gingerbread Man” to Charlotte from “Charlotte’s Web”! A great day was had by all. Children read all day, writing their own traditional tales and sharing favourite stories with others.
We all learnt about crops that are grown locally and the foodstuffs that they help to produce. Our Year 6 children have visited Stibbington to experience life as an evacuee during World War Two. They learnt about life as an evacuee, and what a typical school day would have been like during that time.
Local farmers visited the school with two tractors. 60

School News Market Deeping Community Primary School The expansion building work at Market Deeping Community Primary School is very nearly finished and the school is already making the most of the fabulous new learning spaces. The hall has seen some exciting PE lessons and pleasant lunchtimes, but its main impact has been to give the children and staff their sense of community back. Headteacher, Mark Ratchford, said, “We have been without a hall throughout the summer and autumn terms which has made it difficult to operate as effectively as we would have liked. Now that we have a wonderful new hall, the children are able to benefit from regular assemblies which welcome visitors from our local community and enable us to host special events. We have had reading workshops for parents, charity events, visitors from Deepings Lakes, the Town Council and the Key Theatre in the past few weeks. It is hugely important to our school that we celebrate our links with the local community and come together as a school to share our achievements and
celebrations.” The school has been placing emphasis on helping the community and has been working with a family in school to support the World Encephalitis Awareness Day. One of the pupils suffered a brain injury last year and the day was designed to help develop an understanding of the effects of the condition and how to help. Awareness was also raised when children in the school enjoyed opportunities to dress up for World Book Day and Comic Relief. The ECO Team were very grateful to Mr Bob Broughton from the Town Council for making eight lovely bird boxes to put up around the school site. He came into assembly to present our weekly certificates and awards to the children. Throughout the summer, from June 11th to August 31st this year, the Stamford Shakespeare Company presents a season of plays at the stunning Rutland Open Air Theatre. This summer the Company are proud to present three fantastic plays: Set in Albania in the early 19th century, garnished with live music and glorious costumes, Shakespeare’s greatest comedy, “Twelfth Night”, containing some of his finest comic characters, is a merry tale of unrequited love, shipwrecked twins, cross dressing, mistaken identity and drunken revels. The hilarious antics of roguish Sir Toby Belch, foolish Sir Andrew Aguecheek, pert Maria and prim Malvolio will delight audiences, young and old. Shakespeare’s epic tragedy “Julius Caesar”, where political and military rivalries spiral out of control, is one of his most gripping plays and features some
Noel Coward’s “Blithe Spirit”, a wonderful, supernatural comedy set in the late 1930s, portrays the trials and tribulations of novelist Charles Condomine, who foolishly holds a séance to research his latest book. When the eccentric medium, Madame Arcati, accidentally summons the spirit of his first wife, Elvira, his life descends into chaos. How will Charles cope, caught between two wives, one dead, the other very much alive? The theatre is situated in the grounds of historic Tolethorpe Hall, where last summer over 33,000 people experienced the magic of a visit to this unique venue. Enjoy a picnic in the glorious gardens, then take your seat, protected from summer showers, and see a stage like no other.

As versatile and practical as its larger siblings and combined with an attractive design, the new T-Cross is a flexible model with numerous customisation options and maximum recognition value – a typical Volkswagen. Numerous standard assist systems elevate this compact SUV from the competition. Always a standard feature are the Front Assist area monitoring system with Pedestrian Monitoring and City Emergency Braking System; the lane keeping system Lane Assist; Hill Start Assist; as well as Blind Spot Monitor lane change assist, with integrated Rear Traffic Alert. Optionally available are also the Driver Alert System, Adaptive Cruise Control and Park Assist. The newest Volkswagen SUV has also been innovatively digitalised: as a result, wireless charging
makes sure your smartphone battery is always sufficiently charged, encouraging you to play your favourite songs directly from your smartphone or via streaming services. The optional “Beats” sound system including features, such as a 300 W 8-channel amplifier, and separate subwoofer in the luggage compartment will impress music lovers. Interior background lighting and premium upholstered seats maximise the style in the space. The carefully balanced combination of casual style, refined practicality and extreme cost-effectiveness is aimed at a young and young-and-heart public who are keen to express their positive attitude to life in a self-confident and distinctive way.
