Welcome to your March issue...

Mother’s Day already! “Life doesn’t come with a manual. It comes with a mother” – an old saying, but a true one! We all need help in finding our way through all the various ups and downs of life, and there, right from day one has been that wonderful (sometimes), smiling (often) and loving (always) lady we are so proud to call “Mum.”

Sadly, Paula and I lost our dear mother recently, and I’m sure that anyone having experienced such a loss will know about the feelings of grief and helplessness, but also the warmth which comes from the many memories we have been so lucky to have been left with. Part of her funeral service included the following lines, which I find so comforting:

“Your heart can be empty because you can’t see her Or you can be full of the love you shared.”

Finally, from all of us mums, thanks in advance for the flowers, chocolates, perfume and big hugs, as we try our hardest … without a manual!

First, a reminder that, when the clocks go forward an hour on March 26th, it will make us all feel that summer’s not too far away.

Another definition of “ironic” came our way last month. Having eventually moved to our “dream home” backing onto a densely wooded area on the edge of town, offering complete privacy, in rumbled the monster machines within three days, to absolutely decimate our “backdrop” – some Welsh disease called “Ash Dai bach” apparently! Good news though … we can now put the leaf-blower on eBay!

And finally …

Handmade with love for Mother's Day

Janice V Paskin is a local, 68-year-old grandmother of five. She left school at fifteen, “with a heart for the hurting and broken” and knew she would have to do something about it, sooner or later! Here, she explains what that “something” was and how it has encouraged Janice to share her life story in the form of a recently published book.

“Back in 2009, my husband Norman and I set off on a God-inspired journey to establish a Care Centre which would provide free, short-term accommodation for adults in the UK who were struggling with the pressure and stresses of life and needed a break in order to survive. The centre subsequently became a registered charity called The Well Head Centre on Manor Lane, Bourne. Along the way, I kept several journals recording the day-to-day challenges, joys, frustrations, heartaches, miracles, breakthroughs, and life-changing stories which now form the basis of this book.”

Morton’s Maths Masterclasses Prove to be a “Winn-Win”!

It’s mid-February and a group of children in Year 5 are taking part in an exciting series of Maths Masterclasses led by the Royal Institute. The RI is a wonderful charity that works nationally with schools to promote a love of Maths and Science through engaging and challenging workshops.

The Year 5 children have worked alongside other children from schools in the local area to share and deepen their understanding of what Maths can look like outside of the classroom.

Specialist Classes for Mums and Tums and Mums and Babies

Fitness Instructor, Laura Layen, is a passionate advocate for exercise for everyone, and especially for mothers and their babies. As a mum herself, with two-year-old Mia, Laura (26) recognises that there are so many mothers like herself with “Covid babies” (an unfortunate nickname for anyone who has been born since the outbreak first appeared in this country in March 2020).

As a result of those awful lockdowns and widespread disruption and cancellation of so many services and initiatives already established, many mothers missed out on ante-natal appointments and post-natal opportunities, some of which would have involved discovering how beneficial it can be for both mum and baby to exercise together, but particularly if that can be within a structured class, involving other mums and in a beautiful, warm swimming pool!

That social aspect is clearly part of Laura’s passion to address the importance of mums and their babies coming together, in the recent introduction at Bourne Leisure Centre of three specialist classes. So much good for one’s mental, as well as physical wellbeing, can result from being with others, be that poolside, within the water with your baby, or around a table chatting over a cup of tea/coffee and biscuits (provided free!) afterwards.

● Baby Boot Camp:

Fridays – 10.15am to 10.45am.

● Pre-natal dry-side Exercise Class:

Fridays – 11.00am to 11.30am.

● Post-natal, water-based Aqua Class:

Fridays – 1.15pm to 2.00pm.

Please note that, whilst the Baby Boot Camp and the Post-natal Aqua Class can have the baby accompanied by mother, Foster mother, carer, father or other adult family member, the Pre-natal class is solely for pregnant “mum-to-be and her tum”!

A pre-consultation service is offered at the Centre, either by phone or by e-mail, which involves a questionnaire, enquiring about previous exercise levels and any medical issues. Mums need not necessarily have had a history of being too exercise-conscious in the past. Laura is at pains to point out that these classes can be modified in order to suit individual requirements on behalf of the mother, and also that any information from attendees will be strictly confidential.

Those of you who have been resident in Bourne and the surrounding area for more than a few years, and who have been visiting our beauty therapists for many years, may well remember a popular therapist, Emma Capes, who left the area for pastures new.

How to See Real Progress from your Training

So, are you still on course to smash your New Year’s resolutions or have they already been shelved for yet another year? This month, I’m going to help you when it comes to reaching your training goals for 2023.

Implement these strategies and watch your progress skyrocket!

1Set Clear Goals: Without a goal, it’s easy to get discouraged and lose motivation. To avoid this, set specific, measurable, and time-bound goals that are achievable and align with your overall fitness or performance objectives.

2Stop Overtraining: “Overtraining” is when you push yourself too hard without giving your body enough time to recover. This can lead to injury and burnout, and negatively impact your progress. To avoid it, listen to your body, allow for adequate rest and recovery time, and incorporate active recovery activities into your routine.

3Train with Proper Form: Proper form is crucial for both safety and effectiveness when training. Neglecting proper form can result in injury, reduced results, and frustration.

4Train using Progressive Overload: When you perform the same exercises with the same weight and reps for a long time, you will eventually reach a plateau in your progress.

To avoid this, regularly assess your progress and adjust your training routine to include

heavier weights, more reps, or, if progress stalls, new exercises to continue challenging yourself and making progress.

5Fuel Your Body Properly:

Lastly, one of the biggest mistakes people make when training is not fuelling their bodies properly. Eating a balanced diet that includes adequate protein, carbohydrates, and healthy fats is essential for providing the energy and nutrients your body needs to perform at its best. Additionally, staying hydrated is also crucial, especially before, during, and after exercise.

In conclusion, these are some of the most common mistakes people make when training. By setting clear goals, avoiding overtraining, focusing on proper form, progressing your routine, and fuelling your body properly, you can optimize your training and reach your fitness and physique goals.

Happy Mother’s Day

Mothering Sunday, more commonly known as Mother’s Day, is special and so are all of our mothers! From a legal point of view, mothers have always been there for us, so we should be there for them. Often, mothers are the strength behind the father, and we celebrate their love, kindness, wisdom, and security. They are strong but fun, creative and driven (whether in the work place, at home, or behind the wheel!)

Sometimes, spreading their love and support with several children or, sometimes, the only child, they are the genuine peacemaker among arguing siblings or, guiding the young person through testing times, they are always there.

Our grandmothers deserve a mention too, for all their extra love, kindness, and support, often supplying the additional kindness that no one else can. The lift, the meal, the cosy home for a weekend and lots of fun.

Legally, the law affects families and, sometimes, it could do with being more up to date. At Double and Megson, we always seek to supply our best guidance on topics concerning mothers, grandmothers and children.

The spring term has already been full of wonderful experiences for our children across the school.

We were pleased to welcome back ‘Roots to Food’, a specialist company delivering healthy eating and nutrition workshops for schools.

The children in Reception, Years 1 and 6 had already spent time creating the Spanish dish ‘paella’ with ‘Roots to Food’ in the autumn term. This term, the children in Years 2 and 3 prepared and cooked ingredients for a Japanese teriyaki chicken dish with Bombay noodles.

The children in Years 4 and 5 prepared, cooked and sampled Mexican beef chilli with chocolate and sweetcorn rice that was served with tortilla chips and sour cream. The children learned how to safely chop, mix and cook the ingredients to make delicious dishes which they were able to taste afterwards. It was greatly enjoyed by all!

Earlier in the term, the Year 4 pupils were excited to take part in a music rap workshop. The class were mesmerised by the rap artist, Xidus Pain, who performed different raps for the children to listen to whilst they were able to move to the beat. The class were amazed how he pieced together a rap based on random words the children had generated in the classroom – a very talented skill to have! The children are going to be working with Xidus again soon, to create their own raps about their ‘Dreams and Goals’ which also links to our PSHE curriculum.

Open Days to see “The Trade Institute” for Yourself

Do you work in the construction industry or know someone that does?

Over the next few months, Alto Electrical will be hosting regular open days to showcase our new building and the work that we are doing in our new company, “The Trade Institute”. This ‘big-build project’ will provide rentable spaces for tradespeople to work, and we welcome you to come and take a look around. The spaces available are in the form of woodworking workshops; metalworking workshops; prep areas; shot blasting facilities; and painting booths. Additionally, to support the non-hands-on side of working in a trade, there will be office spaces, event spaces and a dedicated learning/teaching installation area.

These spaces have been created to provide support to local traders and to create a close-knit community of businesses. In addition to the spaces, we have partnered up with multiple allies to create an environment that will support both physical and mental health.

This month, I want to update you on the progress of the building. The workshops have been installed and new access points have been created, now that the building has been split into two sections. So, when you come for the open day, you will get to enjoy walking through our new entrance.

Hopefully spring is on its way and the longer daylight hours mean more time to spend at the allotment or on your vegetable patch. Although we may get some warm days it doesn’t necessarily mean that the soil will be warm enough for sowing, so be cautious.

If you have chitted your first early potatoes and the ground is not frozen they can be planted out from mid-March or early April, but it is well worth covering them to protect them from the late frosts. Don’t forget to add a light sprinkling of fertiliser to the trench.

Never planted an asparagus bed? Now is the time. Dig a trench 12 inches deep and add some well-rotted manure. Make a 4-inch ridge at the base and spread the roots of the crown over the ridge, replace the soil, leaving the tips just visible. Water in and add mulch. Don’t forget to leave the asparagus for two years before actually harvesting.

Now is the time to start a runner bean or celery trench, both of which need a rich fertile, moisture retaining soil. The trench should be 60-90cm (2-3ft) wide and 30cms (1ft) deep. Regularly fill them with vegetable peelings, tea bags etc. Each time you add a new layer, cover with soil. Other jobs to do – and there’s plenty of them!

• Lettuces and other salad crops can be sown indoors or outdoors under cloches or in cold frames. Tomato and cucumber seeds can be sown indoors but wait until the end of the month.

• Sow Brussels sprouts, cabbage, sprouting broccoli indoors and to take full advantage of the ripening season sow aubergines, chillies, and peppers indoors.

• Herbs such as rosemary and sage will benefit from a good trim, and chives and mint can be propagated by dividing them and re-planting.

• Plant out onion and shallot sets – last chance to plant garlic.

• Early varieties of carrot, beetroot, spring onions, peas, chard, parsnips, spinach and broad beans can be sown into the open ground but may need to be under cover.

• Last chance for planting bare-rooted fruit trees and bushes.

• Feed and mulch fruit trees – fertilise the base, water in and then cover with well-rotted manure or compost to act as a mulch.

• Remove dead leaves from cabbages and Brussels.

• Don’t forget to feed your over-wintered crops such as onions, kale, spring cabbage – use blood, fish and bone meal, chicken manure or seaweed–based organic fertiliser.

• If you’re into “no-dig” or have raised beds, March continues to be one of the best times of year to top up your beds. Using manure or compost allows for an increase in nutrients. It also increases soil depths where any soil has been lost due to the worms.

• Prepare seed beds by raking over to a fine tilth and add fertiliser.

R Longstaff & Co Acquire Eckfords for a Stronger Future

When two successful firms combine, the result is hopefully one that will greatly benefit their customers, largely because they can now call upon a much wider range of expertise and experience from those working within the firms that merge. And so it was that in late 2022, two of Bourne’s independent estate agents, R Longstaff & Co, and Eckfords, came together to provide a much wider offering for the public.

Over many decades, the Longstaff family have been influential in South Lincolnshire with offices in Bourne, Grantham and Spalding. The firm has vast experience in commercial, agricultural, and residential, land and property matters, and, over time, R Longstaff & Co had acquired other businesses within this sector.

In May 2010, for example, they took over the residential lettings and management business of Lyalls Lettings in Bourne which then merged with the company's existing Bourne office, which had opened in 2006. Twelve years later, R. Longstaff & Co acquired Escritt Barrell Golding to forge a stronger position in the agricultural and commercial sectors in the Grantham district.

Wills for the Next Generation

Who wants to talk about dying at the age of twentyfive? It was certainly something I avoided for a long time. However, it doesn’t have to be as morbid or depressing as you would think. When you have children, writing a will is in fact the most sensible thing you can do.

In January, we launched “Mamas Wills – Wills for the next generation”, with expert advice and support for parents by parents. Our biggest aim is to break the stigma that “wills are for old people”.

So, how does a will actually help a parent of a child?

If you are a regular reader, you would have seen an amazing article written by Danielle Claydon, my fellow ‘Mamas Wills Ambassador’, where she highlighted the importance of appointing a guardian for your children. If you missed it, let me give you a quick run through:

1A guardian is legally responsible for your child if you were to pass away.

2 They make all parental decisions in the best interest of your child or children.

By appointing a guardian, you avoid any involvement by Social Services (which includes

an extensive search into your family history) where they select what is ‘best’ for your children (not taking into consideration parental styles or your views). This is by far the most important reason as to why an individual with children should write a will; we don’t shout about it enough.

A lot of people think that, in order to write a will, they need a big posh house, fancy possessions and a bank full of money; this truly is not the case.

Your children are your most prized possession; my daughter is the most important thing in my world. I would rather ensure that my child is safe and has security, over any material possessions (although they would be nice too!)

I could tell you loads of other reasons why it is so important to write your will as a young parent, but I have only so many words. So let me finish by saying this; from one parent to another, please secure your child’s future and write a will.

Words from the Mayor

My first official engagement of 2023 was a cold one. This winter, Bourne United Charities have added seven trees across the park, specifically to commemorate the seven decades of the reign of HM Queen Elizabeth II. I was fortunate to be asked to plant a Scarlet Oak on behalf of Bourne Town Council and the residents of the parish, as part of this Platinum Jubilee Project.

As Mayor of Bourne, I officially opened Harrington House Care Home, a purpose-built facility where residents are enjoying the modern facilities and space of their new accommodation. The residents celebrated in style with bubbly and cake and enjoyed the vocal talent of a local singer who soon had a sing-song underway. It was a great opportunity for residents, staff, volunteers, and family to chat and enjoy each other’s company.

Skatepark fans will be glad to know significant progress has been made and, as the project gathers momentum, those waiting to use this multi-wheeled surface can see for themselves that the main concrete bowl is laid, and the project is moving forward to bring a new opportunity for recreation from the spring of 2023.

Amid all these exciting developments the mundane remains important; the necessity to maintain the basics which so often these days cannot be taken

Observant residents may have noticed some necessary replacement waste bins onto our streets with a promise from SKDC of more to follow. It is my view that we need more bins in some areas of the town which are not well served.

The disgusting state of the road verges outside of the town, plus litter and dog fouling left on some of our pavements and verges in town, is a red flag to show that some people just don’t care enough!

If I had a plea for 2023, it would be to make this a litter-free town and parish, where all litterbugs and dog owners take responsibility for their waste and dispose of it appropriately.

Why do I need a will?

Lasting Powers of Attorney

What are they?

Summer of Rockets

Keeley Hawes and Toby Stephens starred in the television mini-series, “Summer of Rockets” in 2019. Loosely based on Director, Stephen Poliakoff’s own family story, it caught some of the odd contrasts of those Cold War days; the disconnect between the “unreal calm” of normal life and ominous rumblings in laneways off the A15, just north of Bourne.

When I first wrote the history of the Thor rockets at Folkingham, it was like digging out a repressed past. The facts were then obscure and sometimes not given full value by residents, blissfully unaware of the scale of the drama. For others, powerful youthful memories of the rocket secrecy, of floodlights, guards, “dry ice rehearsals”, and fuel in the ditches. Now, with the passage of time, the story has come into focus. Former top-level foes have chewed over their experiences for posterity. Books have been published, something like a consensus reached. All are agreed … it was scary as hell!

The Thor rockets at Folkingham were deployed in 1960, under dual British-American control. There were three of them, sixty-five feet (almost twenty metres) tall and looking sleek and modern, as rockets should. They were part of a deployment of sixty in all, at twenty remote locations in Eastern England, the others nearest to Bourne being at North Luffenham.

These were ‘doomsday machines’, capable of taking a 1.44 megaton nuclear bomb 1,500 miles, to Moscow in fact. They ran on liquid oxygen and kerosene and naturally required an array of supporting infrastructure. Contrary to persistent myth, there were no silos. They had fixed concrete launch pads (which, incredibly, are just about still there) which made them and us very vulnerable. The Blue Streak was later to have silos but was cancelled. Much later, the Cold War featured Cruise

missiles at Greenham Common which, unlike Thors, could in theory be dispersed covertly into almost any copse or meadow.

The public were told very little. The days of drama came in the October 1962 ‘Cuba Crisis’ when the rockets were brought to hair-trigger states of readiness. There is a chilling account in Jim Wilson’s “Britain on the Brink” of V-bomber crew alternating between entertaining the entirely oblivious Mayor of Stamford and cranking up Armageddon procedures on the Wittering runway end. This was no exercise. Prime Minister, Harold Macmillan discarded the War Plan and ordered that the V-bombers should not be dispersed – a good decision, and by 1963, the missiles had gone.

I suggest giving the launch sites at Folkingham a miss, as they are more interesting to see on maps or ‘satellite view’ - a distinctive trio of ‘starfish’ shapes. The old wartime bomb storage bays, hidden deep in Temple Wood nearby, are a much better walking excursion to feed the imagination, conjuring up something like a lost Mayan civilisation.
