Aston Clinton School Extension

Aston Clinton School is a primary school that takes pupils between the ages of 4 and 11. The school has approximately 275 pupils. The school badge includes the fi ve arrows from the Rothschild coat of arms, because the family built the fi rst schools in the village.

Extension work started at the school in March 2012 and is due to be complete in September 2013. The value of the project is around £1.1m. The main admin offi ce, meeting rooms and individual study rooms are south facing which means they will be naturally well lit and sunny and will benefi t from passive solar heat gain. The main entrance has been designed to be a feature and to give the school street presence. Currently the school is screened behind tall hedges and trees which make it very diffi cult for the main entrance to be visible to visitors. The appearance of the proposed building compliments and makes reference to the existing school. Where appropriate, on the south and east elevations, the design is less referential to existing buildings. The design has drawn on: - Existing pitches, ridge and eaves lines wherever possible - Existing window proportions, sill and head heights on the east and north elevations

Gordon Birtwistle said: “This is great news, it was a key priority for the previous Liberal Democrat administration and something that I have personally pushed hard for. It is good that the incoming labour administration has recognised the importance of the project and embraced it on behalf of the town and the manufacturing businesses which will benefi t from the increased fl ow of young people with the right skill.”

Heathery Knowe Primary School Heathery Knowe Primary is presently the oldest school in East Kilbride. The school was opened for the fi rst pupils in August 1953. Heathery Knowe was originally opened as a temporary school while the building of Murray Primary was completed. However, nearly sixty years later New Heathery Knowe Primary is still standing with a new building mid construction which will incorporate the heritage of the

Henshaws College, Media & IT Centre Building Henshaws College in Harrogate is the educational arm of Henshaws Society for Blind People, which provides a range of educational, residential and community services for blind, visually-impaired and disabled people of all ages. The Yorkshire College is recognised as an innovator in the use of technology in education. Work started in August this year on a brand new state-of-theart Media and IT Centre . The new centre will provide visually impaired and disabled students with a range of cutting-edge technology-based vocational pathways from media and IT to print and design. A dedicated radio studio will enable students to create podcasts and audio information for the visually impaired - and eventually set up a broadcast station, building on work placements undertaken by students at Harrogate Hospital Radio. An IT suite will further enhance Henshaws’ investment in sectorleading assisted technology; whilst the college’s commercial printing enterprise will also be relocated to the new centre. The building is the culmination of years of planning and fundraising by staff and students. During this time Henshaws

College has established a close partnership with The Audrey & Stanley Burton Charitable Trust, who have committed a substantial sum towards this exciting new venture. Further funds were raised via the Yorkshire International Business Convention, where students Sam Hindley and Joshua Kirkup made a rousing speech to a 2,000 strong audience. Henshaws also presented the project during a lunch at Hazlewood Castle in March 2011, which resulted in a number of businesses and charitable trusts making donations. Building work is expected to be completed by spring 2013.

John Leggott College Preparing for Showtime in College’s New Teaching Space Students returning to John Leggott College in September will learn in new industry-standard teaching and learning facilities as the curtains go up on a new teaching block. Performing arts, ICT, geography and English classrooms all form part of the two-storey, 1,738 square metre building, which includes a professional performance studio and sound booths and will be handed to the College on August 17th 2012. The £2.6 million (including VAT) project has been partly funded by money from the Young People’s Learning Authority (YPLA) and is part of a ten year property development strategy at the College’s West Common Lane campus to ensure it continues to provide a high quality learning experience for young people. “Our plans for this project were ambitious but I am delighted that our vision for these quality teaching and learning spaces has become a reality that both staff and students can enjoy using from the start of the academic year.”

One of the College’s old teaching buildings was demolished in the summer of 2011 to make way for the new building and temporary accommodation was set up in other areas of the College site while work took place. The new building also has lower running costs and is designed to have a low carbon footprint, with features including solar panels to heat water, an air source heat pump and rain water harvesting system. The College worked to design the building with architects GHM Rock Townsend

and construction work was contracted to Clugstons. The block has been designed so that there is potential for further developments in the future, both at ground level and with additional fl oors. Since losing funding for a completely new rebuild of its campus inn 2009, John Leggott College has invested more than £4 million on improving its facilities. Developments include extending the library and photography teaching space, heating improvements, the creation of a new centre for student services and a new seminar room for quiet study. Over the next year further work is planned as the College’s study zone will be replaced to provide a larger space which will house all the College’s mentoring staff and provide independent study spaces for students.

Keele University, Student Union Building Keele was the fi rst UK University of the 20th Century and is the UK’s largest integrated campus university. Keele University is a campus university near Newcastle-under-Lyme in Staffordshire. It was the fi rst new British university in the 20th century, founded in 1949 as an experimental college dedicated to a broad curriculum and interdisciplinary study. Keele is most notable for pioneering the dual honours degree in Britain. The university occupies a 620 acre (250 ha) rural campus close to the village of Keele and houses a science park and a conference centre, making it the largest main campus university in the UK. Refurbishment to the ground fl oor of the Student Union Building started in January 2012 after planning permission was granted by Newcastle –Under-Lyme Borough Council. The objective of the project was to increase the space allocated to key student functions. Together with the drive to create improved accessibility and the feeling of an open welcoming environment.

A number of changes to the external façade of the building have been made also to improve accessibility and provide a clear focal point main entrance. Internally a staircase at ground level has been opened up and additional social and catering seating spaces. A coffee shop outlet has been created, the toilet facilities have been refurbished and the building has been equipped with audiovisual and security system equipment. The scheme which has a project value in the realm of £1.7m was complete in August 2012.

Les Beaucamps High School Work on the £37m project to redevelop the school began in December 2010. The £37m Les Beaucamps High School project will see the new school built on the same site as the old one and it has kept the same name. Mr Le Cheminant said: “At the moment we are quite compromised for sporting facilities, we are relying on what we had before and we have actually lost a bit of our sporting areas because of the new build. For four terms we are going to have to live with that, but at the end of it we will have fantastic new sports hall which will linked by two walkways to the school and then really the whole concept comes together.” The project team behind the build of Guernsey’s newest secondary school say they are working hard to ensure it is fi nished for the start of term.

“We expect this building still to be open and functioning at least 50 years on and probably much further than that,” he said.

The natural slope of the site, in the Castel parish, means all four storeys open on to land. The new school is built around a central courtyard, which is large enough to accommodate all staff and students at once. Ashley Dupree, the project operations director, said this would enable the school to hold outdoor all-school assemblies when the weather was suitable.

Guernsey’s new Les Beaucamps High School has been built to last at least half a century, according to the director of schools’ projects. Derek Neale said: “Most of the buildings that were put up after World War II... was really only intended to have a 25-year life span.” The old school was opened in 1959 and lasted 53 years but Mr Neale admitted it was “on life support” at the end. Morriston Comprehensive School Work has started on the £22 million upgrade of Morriston Comprehensive School.

The Council’s contractor, Carillion, has gone on site to start a two and a half year scheme to provide the school with excellent new facilities in striking energy-effi cient buildings. The project is funded by a £15.4 million grant from the Welsh Government, with the remaining funds coming from Swansea Council.

There will be an open atrium in the dining hall and a functional main hall with retractable seating and audio visual facilities to make staging professional standard productions a possibility.

Cllr William Evans, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Learning and Skills, said: “I am delighted that pre-construction activities have begun on this project to give Morriston a school fi t for the 21st Century.

Teaching facilities will be grouped together to allow greater departmental interaction. There will be new facilities for hairdressing, construction, catering, drama and music.

“This upgrade is a signifi cant investment in our children and our city’s future. It’s one of the major projects in the Council’s drive to raise standards and improve educational environments in the city. “Offi cers will be working closely with the school, the contractors and the local community to keep the school open throughout and to minimise inconvenience to residents.” Sandra Joy, Acting Headteacher, said pupils, students and staff, who have all had the chance to have a say on the plans, were delighted to see contractors on site ahead of the building works. She said: “This scheme will give the young people of Morriston the opportunity to be educated in a fi rst-class learning environment, allowing them to access a 21st Century curriculum and facilities which will enable them to reach their full potential. “We will be working closely with the local authority and contractors to continue to provide quality education safely at the site throughout the work programme.”

Pangbourne College Beard Completes Pangbourne College’s New Communications Centre Local construction fi rm Beard has fi nished building a new two-storey centre with ITC, music rooms, rehearsal and recording facilities and recital hall within the heart of Pangbourne College in time for the opening ceremony. The dramatic building exterior with its aluminium mesh panelling and Siberian Larch timber presented few challenges to the team the layout and fi nishes are of a specialist design, walls are of dense concrete masonry, with internal plasterboard and metal stud partitions fi nished to a high quality to ensure the essential acoustic characteristics are maintained. The cooling and ventilation strategy of the building is via natural passive vents and controlled roof vents. Pendoylan Primary School Cowbridge Work has begun in May 2011 on the construction of a longawaited new building for Pendoylan Church in Wales’s primary school near Cowbridge.

The new development includes several sustainable features including a geothermal heating system and a rainwater harvesting system which will recycle rainwater from the new building roof. Materials from demolition works at the school were recycled where possible and used in the construction work.

ISG Pearce, based in Cardiff, is main contractor on the new school extension. The voluntary-aided co-educational school dates back to 1873 and is being expanded with a new single storey building which will house a new assembly hall, an additional four classrooms, a creative arts teaching area, kitchen and dining room. The fi rst phase of the ÂŁ3.6m construction project completed in spring this year with pupils then moving into the new building while the existing school enjoys a 20-week refurbishment and upgrade programme. A planning application was passed by Bury MBC and work started in May 2012 for a £1.3m scheme at the girls’ school on Bridge Road. The project comprises of the demolition of existing inner buildings to include a former English block, and construction of a central atrium. The new Arts Centre will house the Lester Library over two fl oors, the English Department and the Music Performance Room. Renewal Grant Works Newcastle based contractor SURGO Construction were awarded a £3.2 million contract to deliver a major refurbishment project at South Tyneside College’s Westoe campus. The works will see SURGO Construction remodel areas of the Westoe campus to include a dedicated Marine School building and entrance, refurbish existing facilities and construct new teaching areas. Offi cial works started earlier this week and was marked with a turf cutting ceremony. When complete the project will enable South Tyneside College to continue with its vision for modern learning environments for the further education, higher education and maritime courses it offers. Lindsey Whiterod, Principal and Chief Executive, South Tyneside College said: “SURGO Construction excelled on many of the criteria set out in the tender, including their previous experience of similar schemes and commitment to sustainability.” Late last year the College announced it had been successful in a bid to secure an Enhanced Renewal funding Grant (Phase 2) from the Skills Funding Agency (SFA) for the works. Adsetts Learning Centre - Sheffield Workplace Design: Higher Education Client: Sheffield Hallum University

Open 24 hours almost every day and accessible to the public, the very popular Adsetts Learning Centre with 600,000 books and more than 1,300 study places was due for refurbishment after 15 years of heavy use. SHU carried out extensive student surveys to inform their brief. In 2009, AMA won a competition to help upgrade the facilities, evaluate their function, develop ideas for how services for students could be enhanced and updated in the future, and design and refit the first of three phases. The challenge was to provide a rich mix of facilities and the right acoustics to foster learning. AMA’s design programme enabled many more group work and informal areas to be provided than originally envisaged, providing key spaces for new learning environments supplemented by presentation rooms, a critical part of training for the local users. Improving the light levels and the perception of light in the space has also played an important part in the project. Increasing the views across spaces and adding highlights of colour have further enhanced the environment.

Helpdesk facilities were improved and new worksettings, including shared meeting booths and presentation rooms, were positioned in prime space liberated by relocating staff. A post-occupancy evaluation – based on observations and interviews with students and staff - was undertaken by SHU to assess what worked well and what could be improved, and the comments were built into following phases. The first phase prototype settings proved hugely popular. The results were built into the second phase, which AMA also won in competition.

University launches new company to supply furniture conservation and restoration commissions to alumni Furniture conservation and restoration graduates from Buckinghamshire New University will be able to access furniture conservation work and private commissions through a new company set up by the University. Called Bucks Conservation, the pioneering enterprise will channel commercial conservation and restoration projects to BA (Hons) and MA Furniture Conservation, Restoration and Decorative Arts recent alumni to help them make the transition from education to employment within the conservation sector. The new company will be offi cially launched at Fernandez & Wells, Somerset House, London on Monday 8 October. The University has undertaken furniture conservation work and private commissions for over 20 years, working with prestigious clients such as The Royal Collection, the V&A, National Trust and Lord Rothschild. Private collectors and custodians from the heritage sector have supported the students by providing projects for them to work on. They have also provided locations

for ‘live projects’ where the students work on site, undertaking live restoration and conservation projects as part of the degree course. Students work with historical and often priceless pieces, as well as more modern 20th century items. Now, under the guidance of the University’s furniture conservation experts, graduates will gain valuable experience in a commercial environment, where they will be employed for 12 to 18 months developing their conservation skills and expertise as well as sharpening their business skills. Selection to join the new company will be by interview and a portfolio review. Work on the site is expected to last until the spring. cal Centre as a whole. Carefully considered phasing of additional internal alterations to the existing building, including creation of new staff facilities, sub waiting and a larger relocated pharmacy, meant that works could proceed whilst the building remained occupied.

Given tight timescales relative to funding streams, the project needed to be designed in such a way that potential delays to the programme were avoided, e.g. minimise risk of protracted bat mitigation measures by designing building to avoid affecting potential roosts.

The building was designed as a contemporary addition to the existing building, with bricks selected to be a close match to the existing. The project is currently on site and due to complete in November 2012.

Kerslake House, Research Building Epilepsy is the tendency to have repeated seizures that start in the brain. Epilepsy is usually only diagnosed after a person has had more than one seizure. The National Society for Epilepsy leads the way in cutting edge medical research and are committed to better understaning epilepsy, improving diagnosis and treatment and making seizurefree life a reality for all those with epilepsy. Due to the lack of purpose built facilities many of the research tests carried out have historically been conducted abroad. A new research centre is under construction and due to complete this autumn. The £2.5 million design and build project also has a fi tting out cost of £900,000. The new build takes place at Chalfont St.Peter at the site of a former redundant building which has now been demolished. The new facility will allow tests to be carried out in house; this will result in faster outcomes and translating more quickly into clinical practice. The building, whose end users will consist of professionals and patients, is carefully designed to fi t in with and compliment nearby grade II listed and early 20th century buildings on the Epilepsy Society site. The building also incorporates energy saving features in excess of the minimum requirement of the Building Regulations.

Sunderland Primary Care Trust is leading a project to relocate St Benedict’s Hospice to a new purpose built facility in Ryhope by 2013. Wickham Group Doctors Surgery Long-standing plans to build a new doctor’s surgery at Wickham were approved by Winchester City Council in summer 2010. The new facility has been built off Mill Lane near the community centre after the existing surgery outgrew its site in Station Road, Wickham, Fareham. The project had been in the pipeline since the building of Knowle Village, was unanimously given the goahead. The scheme is being joined nearby by a development of affordable houses. If planners had rejected the scheme its future would have been in serious doubt. This is because, with the scrapping of primary care trusts, funding was only in place until April 2012. Fuel Cycle Area - Dounreay Dounreay Site Restoration Limited (DSRL) is the site licence company responsible for the clean-up and demolition of Britain’s former centre of fast reactor research and development. A new laboratory being built at Dounreay to provide essential support to the remainder of the site clean-up. The new facility will analyse radioactive and other hazardous substances encountered during decommissioning of the most hazardous facilities. Radioactive analysis is currently carried out in laboratories dating from the 1950s that do not comply with modern standards. An evaluation of the options concluded it would be more costeffective to build a new facility than attempt an upgrading of the original facilities.

This includes radioactive particles recovered from the marine environment, samples of gaseous and liquid effl uent, and noseblows provided by workers at risk of inhaling radiological contamination. A specialist alkalai metal laboratory currently located in the former turbine hall of the Prototype Fast Reactor will also be relocated. About 45 people are expected to relocate. The old facilities will be decommissioned and demolished. DSRL laboratory services manager Jeremy Andrew said: “Highquality and effi cient laboratory analysis is essential for the safe decommissioning of our remaining high-hazard facilities. The new facility will provide that for the remainder of the clean-up programme.”

The new facilities, measuring 1300 sq metres, are expected to cost a total of approximately £9 million. Site clean-up contractor Dounreay Site Restoration Ltd tendered a contract for design and construction in the Offi cial Journal of the European Union. Yorkon, part of the Shepherd Group, has been awarded the contract, with an approximate value of £7 million. Sub-contractors include Studsvik and JGC Engineering and Technical Services, which will provide assembly, installation and ventilation services. Work started in Spring 2012 and may take 18 months to complete, with the fi rst analysis of radioactive samples expected in spring 2014. The construction phase is expected to employ 40

Health and Safety Executive sheds light on new charges on business Regulator reveals more than half the revenue generated may go straight to Treasury coffers Businesses found in material breach of health and safety law will from 1 October be charged £124 an hour for the HSE’s regulatory work as it seeks to cope with sharp cuts to its budget. But a recent HSW-hosted webinar revealed the regulator will get to keep less than half of the projected £37 million of receipts from the fi rst full year of the regime, which will see inspectors charging employers for low-level enforcement activities for the fi rst time. HSE programme director Gordon MacDonald said that over the next three years the executive is only allowed to retain a portion of the revenue from fee for intervention (FFI). MacDonald said: “The deal we have in terms of money is that the HSE will retain a certain amount of it over these three years; if it exceeds that then the money will go to the central coffers.” He revealed that the HSE will keep £10 million of the fi rst six months’ revenue, rising to 17 of the projected £37 million

recovery in 2013/14 (the scheme’s fi rst full year), and £23 million of the projected £39 million in 2014/15. Part of the HSE’s original justifi cation for FFI, which will enable it to recover the cost of inspectors’ time wherever they fi nd a “material breach” of safety law justifying a letter or enforcement notice, was that it would support the executive at a time of budget cuts. The government’s 35% cut in the HSE’s funding will leave the regulator around £80 million a year worse off from 2014/15. During the HSW webinar, MacDonald qualifi ed the numbers by saying he expects the scheme to raise less than the £37–39 million projection. Addressing a commonly held view that inspectors might be looking to fi nd reasons to charge to bolster the executive’s revenue he told delegates to the webinar to “rest assured we have controls in place to sort that out. But beyond a certain point, there is no incentive because that money does not come back to the HSE.” Background The regulator’s new cost recovery scheme — Fee for Intervention (FFI) — came into force on 1 October in England, Scotland and Wales. Under the Health and Safety (Fees) Regulations 2012, those who break health and safety laws are liable for recovery of HSE’s related costs, including inspection, investigation and taking enforcement action. Under FFI, the HSE will only recover

costs from dutyholders in material breach of the law. Those who are compliant, or where a breach is not material, will not be charged FFI for any work that the HSE does with them. The guidance defi nes a material breach as where “in the opinion of the HSE inspector, there has been a contravention of health and safety law that is serious enough to require them to notify the person in material breach of that opinion in writing”. Written notifi cation from an HSE inspector may be by a notifi cation of contravention, an improvement or prohibition notice, or a prosecution. It must always include information on the law that the inspector’s opinion relates to, the reasons for their opinion, and notifi cation that a fee is payable. The proposed FFI hourly rate for 2012-13 is £124 and, where an inspector fi nds a breach, the charge will begin from when the inspector fi rst arrived at a premises. The HSE has published guidance, which includes examples of material breaches but makes clear these do not cover every scenario where FFI might apply. Examples include not providing effective guards or safety devices to prevent access to dangerous parts of machinery, and leaving materials containing asbestos in poor or damaged condition, potentially releasing asbestos fi bres. Which in turn will utilise the supply of skilled labour and the internationally renowned research of Scotland’s universities to build on this strong base.

Moray the Enterprise Area Offer The 100 acre Enterprise Park at Forres offers high quality accommodation from a strategic location on the A96, with the cities of Inverness 28 miles to the west and Aberdeen 77 miles to the east. With easy access to international services from both Inverness and Aberdeen Airports, the Park also enjoys excellent transport and communication links. The Scottish Government in June 2012 announced an additional £10 million investment in infrastructure at the Forres Enterprise Park; this follows on from its recent designation as an official Enterprise Area. The Enterprise Area will have a five year timescale from April 2012, therefore the locations designated as Enterprise Area sites present clear, realisable opportunities over this period. At Forres Enterprise Park 10 hectare’s has now been dedicated for Life Sciences use, this area will incorporate all the benefits of Enterprise Area Status, allowing for an opportunity to build on the cluster of expertise in the P4 Digital Healthcare sector. This sector has developed along the Inverness-Elgin corridor, having expanded from 50 to 80 active businesses between 2009 and 2011. AccuNostics, a recently established medical diagnostics company develops and manufactures advanced devices for diabetes self monitoring and clinical use. The company has located in the Enterprise Park at Forres with £2.5 million from the Scottish Investment Bank and £1.5 million from Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE). Companies such as AccuNostics help strengthen Moray’s reputation as a location of choice for life sciences.

Financial Support Scottish Enterprise and Highlands and Islands Enterprise will work closely with the relevant local authorities, as well as with the business community, to maximise the economic value derived from each. Financial incentives will be available at each location and Forres is no exception. These are designed to encourage businesses to bring forward investment decisions while also providing the support necessary to enable business start-ups to become established and to compete internationally. Helping to leverage the human knowledge and natural resource advantages of each location, when the incentive period ends. The Scottish Government has stated that a range of incentives which could be offered, to enterprise areas including; • Business Rate discounts (Up to 100% rates relief). • A streamlined approach to planning (Moray Council) • Scottish Development International support to attract inward investment. • Customised support from Skills Development Scotland. • Priority for the delivering of next generation broadband by 2015 HIE, the Scottish Government’s economic development agency for the Highlands and Islands of Scotland can also help with every aspect of establishing an investment in the area. ISG Drives Away With Volvo UK HQ Project

ISG has won the £1.3 million fi t out project to transform Volvo’s Scandinavia House offi ces in Maidenhead into the company’s new UK headquarters. A 12-week design and build programme, the scheme will see ISG undertake a Cat B fi t out at the three-storey building. The project involves remodelling the internal space to enable Volvo personnel to move from its former HQ in Marlow to the Maidenhead site, creating general offi ce space, a staff restaurant, new reception area and executive meeting spaces. A major requirement of the project sees ISG remodel and strengthen the ground fl oor of the building to provide access for display vehicles within the main reception area and meeting space. The scheme also involves a signifi cant upgrade to existing mechanical and electrical services, with modern data and communications infrastructure installed as part of the upgrade work. Grand Hotel The prime high street site was acquired by Ashford Property Group following a fi re which destroyed a restaurant and adjacent hotel building on Gordon Square in 2006. Planning permission was subsequently obtained for complete site clearance and the construction of an entirely new-build scheme which comprised of 20,000 sq ft of retail space and 60 bed hotel on 2 upper fl oors. Pre-let was agreed with Travelodge to operate the hotel element and terms agreed to pre-let 50% of the retail space to 2 national operators. The vacant site had been a blot on Fort William High Street for more than fi ve years before construction for the retail and hotel development started to breathe new life into the town’s west end. Main contractor status was awarded to West Midlands fi rm Anglo Holt Construction on the site of the former Grand Hotel and McTavish’s Kitchen. The project completed in summer this year. The new hotel and retail development is expected to not just improve the look of the high street but also improve the locally economy.

Lowther Castle Redevelopment Lowther Castle is a country house in the historic county of Westmorland, which now forms part of the modern county of Cumbria. It has belonged to the Lowther family, latterly the Earls of Lonsdale, since the Middle Ages. In 2010 the castle and gardens were leased to the new independent charity, the Lowther Castle & Gardens Trust, and £8.9m of funds secured from the North West Development Agency and European Regional Development Fund to develop the castle and gardens into a major visitor attraction. Work to reverse 70 years of deterioration of the castle, gardens and stable courtyard started in April 2011, and a veritable army of craftsmen have been busy replacing slate roofs, rebuilding collapsed turrets, repairing lime plaster ceilings, refurbishing hundreds of windows and doors, removing hundreds of tonnes of army concrete, and sympathetically installing modern services. The existing bungalow was demolished and eight apartments were also built, 7 of which will be used as holiday lets and the eighth one to replace the demolished bungalow. The stable courtyard is now open with new café, glorious toilets,

meeting room and restoration exhibition. The Lowther museum and access to the castle ruins will follow this autumn. Premier InnManchester Manchester’s latest hotel development - the 193-bedroom Dale Street Premier Inn - has been officially ‘topped out’. Premier Inn is the UK’s largest hotel brand, with more than 650 hotels. Originally opening under the “Travel Inn” brand name in 1987, it has been owned by Whitbread during its entire operation and was set up to compete with the Travelodge brand which was at the time owned by Forte. The roof is now on, the internal fi t out completed and the 12-storey hotel has been handed over. The hotel also includes a Thyme Restaurant and fi ve meeting rooms, which will create approximately 50 new jobs. An innovative sandwich panel construction technique was used to build the shell of the hotel and all 11 upper fl oors where constructed at a rate of one every ten days. The system, which sees structural concrete panels installed complete with insulation, windows and the brickwork skin, has been hailed for its speed, improved safety and aesthetic fi nish. Located at the corner of Dale Street and Lena Street, the striking tower is fi nished in a blue / black engineering-style brick, emulating the appearance of the nearby railway arches on the approach to Piccadilly Station. The Dale Street hotel is Premier Inn’s fourth in Manchester city centre, and is within easy walking distance of central shops, restaurants and Manchester Piccadilly Station. Premier Inn is expanding across the UK on the back of strong demand, Premier Inn currently have more than 47,000 bedrooms in the UK.

Southport Cultural Centre The Atkinson The Southport Arts Centre, Atkinson Arts Gallery and Southport Library are all undergoing huge redevelopment and will not be open to the public until April 2013, when it re-opens as ‘The Atkinson’, a regional cultural centre for the arts. This major refurbishment will see cutting edge design and technology vastly enhance our cultural offer for tourists and the local community. The Atkinson is a key transformational project, working towards Southport’s aspirations of becoming ‘England’s Classic Resort’. It is a £17 million development, due to open in 2013. It involves the integration of two Arts & Cultural managed venues, Southport Arts Centre and the Atkinson Art Gallery and the central Southport Library, into one regional cultural centre. Southwater Leisure Development & Energy Centre Ambitious plans for the refurbishment and modernisation of Telford Ice Rink as part of the £250m Southwater development are well and truly underway. The scheme includes new soft play facilities, construction of a restaurant and bar facing

Tay Hotel Interserve, the international support services and construction group, has been appointed as main contractor on a refurbishment project to create the new Dundee Malmaison hotel. The scheme is located on the site of the vacant Tay Hotel, a listed city centre landmark building constructed in 1889. In keeping with the prestigious Malmaison brand, the structure is being redeveloped to create an international standard lifestyle boutique hotel. The project forms part of the £1 billion Dundee Central Waterfront Development, an integral phase in the city’s £multi-billion regeneration of its historic waterfront, which will include the new £45 million V&A museum. The £7 million contract is testimony to what Interserve calls a ‘Delivering Growth Together’ approach, which sees the capabilities of Interserve Industrial Services and Interserve Technical Services complement its role as main contractor. Interserve Industrial Services has been brought in to supply and erect unusual external perimeter scaffolding in a ‘Tube and Fittings’ confi guration as opposed to the more common system scaffolds used in Scotland. In addition, the division will use its expert knowledge on this complex

project where the north elevation is to be constructed with live shops, pub outlets and a series of cellar spaces below. As part of the conservation project, Interserve will replace sash and casement windows and timber shutters, repair a feature lead dome on the building’s roof, make good stonework, refurbish a feature staircase and cupola located on the stairs’ landing and replace or redress Scottish slates on the building’s mansard roof. In addition, the existing structures and fi re escape staircase in the atrium were rotten and had collapsed. The company is required to rebuild these.

The Works 2 The Ffwrnes is a cultural and creative centre for entertainment, the arts, education and employment, due for completion by the end of 2012. The scheme started on site in September 2010. Work commenced on site in September 2011 at Rigby Street, Glasgow. The scheme which has a programme of 40 weeks is located on a 3.8 hectare Brownfi eld site. The project which has a contract value of around £3.45m will see a purpose built, fully serviced site for approximately 54 semi-permanent mobile home plots with the provision of 6,300m2 of parking for HGVs and trailers. Main Contractor on the scheme is RJ McLeod which is one of Scotland’s largest privately owned civil engineering building contractors. The work consists of initial clearance of the contaminated Brownfi eld site and the treatment and disposal of hydrocarbon impacted soil, invasive species ( such as Japanese Knotweed, Himalayan Balsam and Giant Hogweed) , industrial dyes and asbestos. Remediation works included earthworks and plat forming, framework landscaping, reinforced concrete retaining structures, removal of approx 1,000m3 silt.

The project follows the successful openings of The Hepworth Wakefi eld and Trinity Walk which have already drawn thousands of new visitors to the city. Site preparations began on June 6, with completion of Wakefi eld ONE scheduled for the summer of 2012 to coincide with

Local sports clubs and community organisations are being consulted as the project progresses to ensure activities planned for the new centre meet community needs. NPS Castleford offi ce was commissioned by Wakefi eld Council as the lead design consultant for the new swimming pool in Wakefi eld’s city centre. The new pool will become a regional resource for swimming, with health and fi tness facilities. Designed in compliance with relevant guidance issued by Sport England, Amateur Swimming association (ASA) and other sports related guidance, the building will be sustainable and endeavour to achieve a ‘very good’ BRE Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) rating.

ISG Revealed Trafalgar House In Time For Games ISG successfully completed the renovation of two listed façades of Trafalgar House on Regent Street ahead of the Olympics as part of the contractual conditions for a wider £3 million refurbishment of the six-storey property for The Crown Estate. The renovated façade of Trafalgar House was unveiled ahead of the Olympic Torch Relay http://mb.cision.com/Public/1207/9313698/89e502e899f193 2d_org.jpg The prominent grade II listed commercial offi ce building lies along the route taken by the Olympic Torch Relay and with millions of people watching around the world, The Crown Estate stipulated that the cleaned and refurbished ornate façades must be revealed ahead of the event. Successfully delivering this project milestone, ISG is now carrying out an extensive re-fi t to create Cat A offi ce accommodation at basement level and fl oors two to fi ve, while existing tenant, The Bank of Egypt, remains in occupation on the ground, mezzanine and fi rst fl oor. The scheme also includes the creation of a larger, contemporary reception area, with ISG carrying out structural alterations to the building to extend the ground fl oor into an adjacent vacant restaurant. Across the upper levels, the contractor will carry out sensitive repairs and redecoration of the ornate plasterwork and joinery elements, including refurbishment of the original sash windows. New ceilings, raised access fl oors and effi cient mechanical and electrical services will also be installed throughout Trafalgar House. The building features an architecturally listed circular core with a spiral staircase and caged lift. The programme includes a complete refurbishment of the lift involving new lift interiors, electrics and controls. ISG will also restore the staircase, care-

fully matching and replacing the stone fl oors and brass hand rail. In addition to the façade refurbishment, the project sees ISG carry out a full roof replacement, installing a new high performance roofi ng system with replacement lead work. Former Cobden Mill Work started in March this year on a 44 residential units and 1 business unit at the former Cobden Mill in Sabden, Clitheroe. Sabden lies on the south side of Pendle Hill approximately 4 miles from Clitheroe in the Ribble Valley. It has around 1500 residents who are served by two Primary schools, three churches, two public houses, a post offi ce, doctor’s surgery, delicatessen and general store. The scheme which will see some new build and refurbishment work. The scheme which will cover some 35,000 square feet has a project value of £3.7 m. 6 of the 44 residential units will be affordable. Falcon House will also be refurbished and used as B1 business space. The construction of the scheme which is due to complete in November this year has been led by Bluetree Civils & Construction of Salford. This will be the biggest housing development in Sabden in decades The development will transform the site of the former Cobden’s cotton mill alongside Sabden Brook which has been largely unused since Contrast Upholstery (later Tetrad) moved out of the village some years ago.

The development has proved controversial during the planning stage with residents packing public meetings to complain about the strain on the village’s already horrendous traffi c and parking problems, and fearing that the infrastructure such as schools, medical facilities, and utilities such as gas, electricity and phone lines will not be able to cope.

Goodman’s Fields, Flats & Commercial Units Client: Berkeley First Contractor: Mitchellson Formwork & Civil Engineering Limited Contract: Goodman’s Fields, London Value: £3.62million Contract programme: 51 weeks Completion period: 43 weeks Situated just a few paces south of Aldgate East tube station is the Berkeley First development at Goodman’s Fields. The development is a 10 storey student residential block plus basement, with internal court yard from 1st fl oor upwards; 4 No. Cores, 10 No. Lift shafts, waterproof concrete basement, foul and storm water drainage networks. The initial scheme was for a traditional insitu concrete frame throughout. Through early liaison with the design team we were able to propose a precast solution to Berkeley First. This resulted in a tra-

ditional frame from basement to 1st fl oor podium slab (600mm slab), subsequently precast columns, twin walls with integral precast stairs and landings and in-situ slabs from the podium level to roof. This allowed permanent access from an early stage and full permanent access via the staircases was available immediately following the striking of the roof slab. Pre-casting is not always a viable alternative but was a serious benefi t to this scheme; especially as we were able to keep most of the work in house. Columns, stairs and landings were all manufactured by our sister company Bedford Precast at our factory in Arlesey; Bedfordshire. Twin wall was manufactured by our colleagues at Oran Precast in Ireland. The onsite construction environment was of the highest standard with every effort to ensure that the site ran like an effi cient factory fl oor as opposed to a building site. Precast components were delivered to site ‘just in time’, where they are then propped to release the crane and grouted / fi lled. We used a self compacting concrete for the twin wall infi ll which reduced labour demand and also increased the concrete setting and hardening times.

Columns were secured using a combination of pressure grouting from the lower half of the column to ensure no air pockets are formed as a result of gravity fi lling over the length of the column. It also ensures that the upper half of the grout tube is clean to facilitate installation of the upper progressive collapse steel bar. Grouting of the upper progressive collapse steel bar is carried out by gravity fi lling the upper half of the tube and pushing the bar into position; ensuring that full encapsulation is achieved. Lightning strip can be cast in as required and continuity tested prior to release. Using a precast solution signifi cantly reduced our dependency on crane time, reduced the number of lifts over in-situ and guaranteed a good quality of fi nish achieved. The erection of the twin wall cores could be completed in a day; removing them from the critical path. Insitu columns produced at a rate of 8 per day could be smashed by the pre-cast installation rate of approx. 30 a day. The combination of early interaction with the design team, in-house precast capabilities and highly controlled site management structure enabled us to knock 8 weeks off of the contract programme.

Parc Glyndwr ( 84 Residential Units Croft-Y-Bwla is a country house and farm 1.5 miles north-west of Monmouth, southeast Wales. The house was built around 1830 and was designed by the noted Monmouth architect George Vaughan Maddox. It has been listed as Grade II since 1974. The actress Helen Barry once lived at the house with her husband Major Alexander Rolls (1818–1882), who was Mayor of Monmouth between 1870 and 1874. The estate is now in the process of being developed for housing. A planning application to develop part of the area for housing was fi rst submitted in 2004. Several later proposals were made, to develop up to 145 dwellings on the site. The proposal was subsequently promoted for development through Monmouthshire County Council’s Local Development Plan and a sustainability assessment of the site was undertaken.

In 2011 planning permission was sought to develop the grounds into a golf course, driving range, hotel and conference centre. Development of part of the site for housing is now under way, with the estate being called “Parc Glyndwr” by Charles Church Developments.

The current inner city Birmingham store now also serves the headquarters offi ce, international trading division, property and investments, online store (mail order), warehouse, and national distribution centre. Work started on the privately funded cash and carry warehouse in February 2012 after an application for detailed planning permission was granted by Birmingham City Council. The single storey scheme which is being managed by A & H Construction & Development Plc, Halesowen, is due to complete this autumn. The project will includes alterations, extensions and façade improvements to the existing cash and carry store, along with the erection of a new 3,000 sq m ware-

house with ancillary offi ces on adjacent land. The cash and carry building has had several uses over the years. The Wing Yip Centre currently includes a cash and carry supermarket, fi nancial and professional services, restaurants, cafés and an offi ce. The buildings are steel-framed and the façade is made up of facing brick plinths with either insulated fl at panel cladding or profi led cladding above. The curved and featured tiled roofs punctuate parts of the building, whilst the curved roof of the new warehouse is composed of insulated profi led metal sheeting. The roof tiles have been made by Santoft and feature warped horns, fi nials and ball caps, and collared ridge tiles.

Midway Retail Park Midway Park -Gellihirion Industrial Estate – Pontypridd Midway Park extends across acreage of 4.08 acres. ASDA Armadale Station

Southdale is a comprehensive redevelopment of a former opencast brownfi eld site to the south of Armadale, within the Armadale Core Development Area (CDA). Southdale Local Centre will act as a hub for the community in the south of the town, in the same way as Armadale Cross is a hub for the north of the town. The Local Centre will include a school, supermarket, variety of small shops, cafes and restaurants and offi ce space for small businesses. It also has aspirations to incorporate a health centre and leisure uses such as a cinema. Asda launched the construction of its

£10.5 m store at Armadale Station Development, one of Scotland’s largest regeneration projects in June. The new store, which opened on 24th September has a gross fl oor area of approximately 40,000 q ft and will contribute a signifi cant investment to the area, delivering 150 full and part time jobs, as well as a wide range of Asda’s quality products at affordable prices. Supermarket & Petrol Station - Tain Work on building the fi rst Asda supermarket in Ross-shire is now complete. The construction of their new store in Tain started on Monday, April 16. The supermarket will create around 220 new full and part-time jobs. Asda had been trying to establish a premise in the town for some time.

The supermarket giant’s efforts became bogged down in a legal wrangle following a challenge by rival Tesco over a Highland Council decision to give Asda the go-ahead. The Court of Session ultimately threw out the call for a judicial appeal, paving the way for Asda to press ahead with its proposals for a retail development close to the A9. The store features a 20,000 sq ft sales area with a petrol fi lling station, car parking and cycling facilities. Asda has also invested in the local bus network to ensure adequate provisions are made for travel to the store at Knockbreck Road.

Tesco Supermarket, Narborough Road Retail Park Magazine Copy for Block E, Lakeside Retail Park, Thurrock. Expansion continues at Lakeside Retail Park, part of the destination shopping area at West Thurrock, Essex, with the expansion of the largest concentration of retail accommodation in Europe. Having completed the construction of a new retail terrace at Lakeside Retail Park, Thurrock some years ago, CRM Architects was invited by Ravenside Investments Limited, a retail park investment and development subsidiary of Land Securities, to further extend the retail park terrace, driven by tenant demand. The proposal involved the relocation of a stand-alone restaurant, diversion of Anglian Water sewer systems, the re-alignment of the main arterial road through the park, new bus stops, re-confi guring the car park and major landscaping works. Working with the design team and Land Securities in-house project managers, CRM Architects, working with appointed planning consultants, obtained planning consent for an additional 38,500sqft of development together with the re-location and expansion of the restaurant within the retail park. The terrace extension represents a further step in the development of Lakeside Retail Park area as one of the prime shopping destinations in the South East. Previous development work to enhance the retail offer has included creating a 90,000sqft two storey Megastore for Currys, the introduction of three catering outlets for Costa, Nandos and Subway to extend the dwell time and the re-imaging of the frontages of the park in a more contemporary style to refl ect that of the retail terrace extension. The tender for the work was won by McLaren Construction, a locally based national contractor, and following analysis of the critical path procurement programme the steel lead-in times were met through early placing of orders during the tender period so that rapid progress could be achieved on site. The design of the terrace incorporates a standing seam aluminium roof in sinusoidal swept form with chevron and horizontal cladding below on a river bed Lignacite two tone facing masonry block work plinth. Glazed entrances are equipped with electric horizontal sliding doors and sign frame bars off-set from the building above. Corner wrap-around Technal structural glazing provides a striking corner display to the block and enhances the permeability of the built form.

Work on the extension started in August 2011 and the fi rst phase restaurant was completed in time for the retail extension works to start in January 2012. The Anglian Water sewer which was located beneath the proposed extension was diverted. This involved sheet piling and 6 metre deep excavations across one of the retail park entrances. Sheet piling was also used to the highways boundary to create the extended service yard area which was screened from the main access road into the park with a three metre high planted bund. The car park re-confi guration provides 270 parking spaces in front of the retail terrace which helps to balance the distribution of parking on site. Having worked with McLaren Construction in the past the team were pleased to have Site Agent, Charlie Ryder, on the team to ensure that the project was moved forward in an expeditious manner to allow the tenants access for fi t out for August Bank Holiday trade. New retail park tenant totem signage and a new mini-totem pole for the extension completed the works.

CRM Architects was appointed by Fairgate Investments Limited to redevelop a retail park of deteriorating quality at Narborough Road, Leicester. The planning and highways departments at Leicester had specific aspirations for the site and played a lead role in identifying the scope of the site and the requirement for a building of significant quality for this important location. Working with project managers, Redbourn Group, and the design team, CRM Architects worked to incorporate energy saving measures within the project. These included reconstituted cladding panels made from compressed waste stone materials for the building façade, an air-tight building envelope, SUDS car park drainage to reduce out-fall rates, rainwater harvesting to provide grey water for the wc facilities, combined heat and power systems, passive natural air ventilation flumes, large areas of double-glazing to afford views out and increase building envelope permeability together with deep daylight penetration enhanced by large roof lights above the retail area. The design is a sculptured form to justify the setting. CRM Architects incorporated a modelled outward-sloping façade of planar-style glazing and polished reconstituted stone incorporating deep canopies and lobbies to the west and south elevations, providing passive solar control whilst allowing glazed elevations to express the visual permeability of the envelope. Flush facing materials and a raking transition from glass to stone establishes a homogenous design whilst creating movement in three dimensions on the façade and enhancing the sculptural context. CRM Architects are the BREEAM assessors on this project, designed to achieve a BREEAM “very good” standard

This latest project has seen two 1970s residential properties demolished and rebuilt into an elegant Victorian-style £2.7 million property. The Bristol-based construction company built the bespoke property with state of the art sustainable technology hidden behind a traditional stone fabric and this new building now sits comfortably within the surrounding conservation area. Much consideration was given to obtaining the optimum tones of the real stone and ensuring energy conservation with super insulation, movement-controlled lighting and heat recovery were included. Also of note is the roof which is in line with surrounding properties yet permits the whole top fl oor space to comprise a light and airy dance studio with light-rigging and a sprung fl oor.

The college was founded in 1884 in York Place, Brighton as a boys’ Secondary School and moved to its current site overlooking the city and the sea in 1932, later attaining grammar school status, becoming Varndean Grammar School for Boys, administered by the Education Committee for the County Borough of Brighton. In 1972 the fi rst girls were admitted to the school (a small number of girls attended A level physics classes at the school in 1970-71), and in 1975 it became a sixth form college under its fi rst principal, David A.G.
