We continue to live in challenging times, but as usual the magazine is jam-packed with lots of local information and local businesses. Please support as many as you can - use them or lose them! Like never before, your community needs you.

In case you weren’t aware, we run Dartford Living alongside volunteer members of the local community for the local community. It’s the only independently run magazine serving the local area with information, fun, good news and positive local stories!

Please get in touch if you would like to write an article for the magazine. If writing is not for you, then perhaps you could volunteer to deliver 100 or so magazines to your neighbours. You will guarantee your copy of the magazine and get a little exercise as well!

GARETH JOHNSON MP: HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN

Her State funeral, including the service at Westminster Abbey, the procession through London and ending with a Committal service in Windsor Castle was a spectacular event. It was a fitting way to say thank you and goodbye to a Queen who served our nation unflinchingly. It really showed us at our best.

Much now will change, it will take time to get used to having a King. We are incredibly fortunate to have a King with a huge sense of duty and who genuinely cares about his people and his country. He is just as much at home walking around a Welsh farm as a London council estate. I was fortunate enough to witness his first speech to both Houses of Parliament shortly after he was proclaimed King. His words struck the right tone and, as a long-time admirer of King Charles, I sense he will do an excellent job.

The weeks following the death of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will never be forgotten. We have all dreaded this day happening and couldn’t quite imagine what our country would be like without her on the throne.

I was asked to be in Westminster Hall when Her Late Majesty’s coffin was taken from Buckingham Palace to the great hall to lie in state. This occasion was sombre, but also a reminder of how magnificent this country can be.

In the days that followed, more than 250,000 people travelled to Westminster Hall to pay their respects, with many thousands more lining the streets to catch a glimpse of Her Late Majesty’s coffin in procession. It has been truly remarkable to see so many people, from all corners of our nation come out to show their affection for Queen Elizabeth II.

I was pleased to contribute to the debate in the House of Commons, paying tribute and conveying the gratitude our town has for the service given by Her Majesty. Dartford was heartbroken.

Queen Elizabeth gave everything for us. Her whole life was committed to us and our welfare. From the young age of 25, she was the perfect monarch. She loved her people, and she was in turn loved by the people.

As we look to the future and adapt to this new era we can be optimistic about what lies ahead thanks to the legacy that Her Late Majesty the Queen has left us.

God save the King.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE – VOLUNTEER WITH HEALTHY LIVING CENTRE

Our aim at The Healthy Living Centre Dartford is to reduce health inequalities and improve health and wellbeing in our local community in Dartford. We achieve this by delivering and facilitating projects that offer a range of opportunities for training, volunteering, social interaction and community engagement.

Our volunteers are the core of who we are and what we stand for, and take an active role in the direction and delivery of our services leading the majority of our projects.

Have you ever considered volunteering?

Our volunteers are from all backgrounds and provide support across two centres based

on the outskirts of Dartford town centre. Our wonderful volunteers vary from retired people, jobseekers and local people with time on their hands. Mostly they are people who want to share their skills and give something back to the community.

What we, the Healthy Living Centre Dartford have to offer in return is ongoing support and training, a happy and healthy environment, the opportunity to learn something new, make friends and have lots of fun!! This really is an amazing chance and opportunity for you to get involved in something very special within your local area.

Would you like to learn how to teach others

to cook and prepare meals or maybe you already have those skills to share with others? Would you like to share your IT skills or learn and progress in a regular IT class? How about flower arranging or upcycling furniture? Or if the outdoor life is for you, you can join the team on our community allotment to grow your own vegetables, fruit and flowers?

VALLEY PARK RADIO - THE QUIZ WITHOUT A PRIZE

Since 2000 Valley Park Radio’s dedicated volunteers have been providing entertainment and music to the patients, staff and visitors of Darenth Valley Hospital.

We often get asked (well occasionally) why we bother volunteering at Valley Park Radio and what is the point of hospital radio in the current digital age? Well, we think hospital radio is amazing and should be supported and we are not alone. Research has shown that hospital radio has a positive impact on a patient’s well-being. It gives patients a sense of belonging, relieves boredom and loneliness and is a calming influence at what can be for many a difficult time in a strange environment. You can now also now listen to us online so you can listen both in and outside the hospital.

Like most hospital radio stations Valley Park Radio were significantly impacted by the Covid pandemic. We are now starting to return to normal (whatever that is!) Our recent recruitment drive has been hugely successful and we are in the process of training up a whole host of new presenters. This means we will be able to offer even more live shows. We have even updated our previously out of date broadcasting software which means that we have reduced the risk of technical issues (well

hopefully!)

DITCHES, DEFENCES AND DENEHOLES: WALK THROUGH HISTORY IN JOYDENS WOOD

With half term approaching, October is the perfect time for an autumn stroll around the Joydens Wood area and neighbouring Stanhill. You won’t be the first – everyone from Saxon settlers to world war fighter pilots have left their mark on this leafy corner of Dartford! So, let’s tiptoe through the fallen leaves, collect a pumpkin or two and walk through history in Joydens Wood…

A word of warning: watch your step as you enter the woods because all manner of excavations have occurred over the years. You can still find parts of a deep trench throughout, dug by those early Saxons. ‘Faesten Dic’ (translation: strong dyke) is listed on the National Heritage register as a protected historical site and its origins are still debated. It appears to have been some kind of defence ditch, or walkway used to mark the Saxon boundary.

Did You Know?

There are nine ponds within Joydens Wood, home to several species of newts. See if you can spot them (and other wildlife) on your walk.

Visit Stanhill Farm today and you’ll likely spot a pumpkin or two, but once upon a time the area was inhabited by the Cantii people – a fierce Celtic tribe of warriors! ‘Stankey’ existed as a tiny hamlet attached to Stankey Wood and remains of defence forts have been found, built during the Roman invasion.

What’s in a Name?

It’s believed that Joydens Wood is so-called because of a local family, the Jordaynes, who resided locally in the 16th century. Woodland has been recorded officially since 1600 and was privately owned for the most part.

During the 1920s, a survey found there were 120 deneholes within Joydens Wood itself (and many more have been found across the general Bexley / Dartford area). These ditches have been a source of mystery, with disagreement over their original purpose. Were they hiding places? Storehouses for grain or other goods? One strong argument is that these pits were dug to extract chalk (and the number of them in Bexley’s Chalk Wood seems to bear this out!)

Plane Spotting!

World War Two fighter pilots have also left their mark on the landscape. In 1940, two Hawker Hurricane planes were shot down overhead and debris is still said to be scattered throughout. A wooden model of one of the planes was created by the chainsaw sculptor Peter Leadbeater to commemorate their dramatic landing.

Post-war, housing development turned Joydens Wood into a suburb with its infants and junior schools opening in the 1960s. In 1956, the Forestry Commission acquired the woods and they

became accessible to the public in 1988, when the Woodland Trust took ownership. For more information on what the Wood has to offer their website www.woodlandtrust.org.uk is a great place to start and provides walking guides to download.

What to See in the Autumn?

Oak, chestnut and beech trees are all putting on a stunning leaf display this month. Joydens is also home to a wide range of fungi (caution: some are very toxic) including the white-spotted red cap and fly agaric. You might also have some company on your walk – I’ve found the Joydens Wood squirrels are particularly friendly at this time of year…

We have been very fortunate to have an array of talented professional conductors, including Rupert Bond, Cormac Dorrian, George Vass, Ben Knowles and David Grubb. They bring out the very best in our players; all our members are high-standard amateurs, but when you hear us in concert, you’ll be treated to the sound of one of the top orchestras in the Southeast . And we have fantastic guest soloists: look out in March 2023 for international performing and recording artiste, Mathilde Milwidsky, who will be playing the Brahms Violin Concerto.

Did you know that the Mick Jagger Performing Arts Centre in Shepherds Lane has been home to the Dartford Symphony Orchestra since it opened in March 2000? We’ve been performing high quality concerts – four every year – since then. And yes, the pandemic affected us, as it did music groups all over the country, but we’re now back for a full season of shows.

We don’t just perform classical favourites, from the likes of Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Brahms and Mozart, we also play popular music from West End musicals and films.

Our next next show, on October 22nd, is ‘Sounds of the Movies’, a joint venture with the Ben Beddoes Big Band. It promises to be a wonderful evening. We’ll have an uplifting programme that includes themes from ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’, ‘Evita’, ‘Star Wars’, ‘Mission Impossible’ and ‘The Mission’. And we’ll be joined by wonderful guest vocalists from DAODS (Dartford Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society), Natasha Kissane-Moore and Scott James.

RSPCA - KENT NORTH WEST BRANCH - HERE TO HELP LOCAL ANIMALS AND OWNERS IN NEED!

We are your local Branch of the RSPCA covering all DA postcodes plus BR8 postcodes. The RSPCA works to promote kindness and prevent cruelty to animals and we carry out this mission in our local area.

HOW DO WE DO THIS?

The Branch supports our local RSPCA Inspectors by paying veterinary and rehoming costs for mistreated and abandoned animals. Each year we help at least 200 of the most needy of animals into new homes. You may have seen the sad case last New Year’s Eve of the 10 rabbits crammed in boxes without any food or water and dumped on Sandringham Drive, Dartford. We are pleased to be able to tell you that we found great new homes for all of these bunnies. Here are Eric and Ernie, two young brothers from the Dartford 10, whose lives we were able to turn around.

The sequence of events has been a strange and difficult one for many. For some, Queen Elizabeth appeared to be of superhuman strength. And yet, like all of us eventually, father time caught up with Her Majesty and she has passed on to greater things. Her faith and dedication to this country was inspiring to many and, as football in the National Leagues resumes this weekend (17th-18th September), we at Dartford will be honouring Her Majesty with a minute’s silence. Like many, I’m sure, we shall mourn our Queen’s passing, yet celebrate her life as well.

Hello again, welcome to another edition of Walking With The Darts, a monthly update on all things related to Dartford FC, courtesy of Dartford Living Magazine.

Last month I wrote about the start of Dartford FC’s 2022-23 season and the new additions to the squad. And, with eight games played, a couple of new faces have arrived as Alan Dowson and his coaching team try to continue rebuilding the squad, as well as install more consistency on the pitch.

However, recent events in our country have necessitated that both the Football Association and The National League postpone all football matches on the weekend of 10th-11th of September. The move meant that the Dartford First Team had its derby fixture with local rivals Welling United postponed (now Tuesday 1st of November), while Dartford FC Women had to postpone their fixture with Dulwich Hamlet Women (TBC).

Yet, it was imperative that the country be able to mourn and come to terms with the sudden death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth. An event that has brought the country to an abrupt

We shall then celebrate our new King, King Charles III and his wife the new Queen, as well as the new appointment of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge becoming our new Prince and Princess of Wales. Change can be a good thing. As our Royal Family lead us into the future ahead, I’m sure you’ll join me in praying for them and wishing them good luck as we say thank you and goodbye to our Queen.

Returning to matters on the Bericote Powerhouse Princes Park pitch, there has been a few tweaks in personnel at the club as well. Goalkeeper, Dan Wilks, picked up an injury recently, which has forced Alan Dowson to bring in young goalkeeper Joe Young on loan from Premier League side Wolves. The young lad has been in impressive form inbetween the Dartford sticks with two clean sheets in his first four games.

The midfield has been strengthened by the addition of Adam Lovatt (on loan from Sutton United for an initial three months) and Kwaku Frimpong (on loan from AFC Wimbledon for an initial one month). Meanwhile, young midfielder

Cameron Brodie continues to impress on loan at Margate FC. Both he and our Academy Coach, Ben Greenhalgh, scored a brace each as they crushed Herne Bay FC 4-0 recently.

Football resumed for the Darts in mid-week, where we travelled to recently relegated Dover Athletic. Tom Bonner and Co put in an impressive shift, where they demoralised their opponents with three first-half goals of the highest quality. Samir Carruthers and Maxwell Statham added to their tallies, while Luke Coulson opened his account for the club with the second goal in a game which saw the Darts return home with a 3-1 win.

As far as the Dartford FC Women’s team is concerned, they have had a positive start to the season with four points from their opening three games. The best of which was an excellent 1-0 victory over a strong Fulham side on the main pitch in front of 180 supporters.

However, the best news coming out of the camp was the birth of Connor Dymond and Jade Charlton’s baby boy Maddox. Born on the 24th of August at

7pm, Maddox weighed 8lb 13oz and, together with his mum, dad and older brother, is doing very well. I’m sure you’ll join me and wish the family a huge CONGRATULATIONS!! We will support the family in any way possible and await the return of Jade as Dartford FC Women’s number one goalkeeper! And, who knows…in a few years’ time one or two new additions to the Dartford Youth Academy!

‘Believe’ Christmas Grotto Returns to Bluewater, along with the Ice Rink and Winterland

‘Believe’, the enchanted Christmas experience, is returning to Bluewater, alongside the Ice Rink and Winterland, with all tickets set to go on sale next week.

The wondrous Christmas grotto launched at Bluewater for the first time in 2020 to sell-out success and, due to popular demand, is set to make a return this year. ‘Believe’ will open from Friday 25th November, right up until Christmas Eve, Saturday 24th December*.

‘Believe’ invites guests into a mystical cavern to meet McJingles, one of Santa’s most trusted elves, along with Norbert, his magical reindeer friend. After hearing Norbert’s story, the children will take part in a festive craft activity decorating their own bag of magical reindeer food to take home with them. Families will then be invited into Santa’s captivating grotto where little ones will meet Santa before receiving a gift, as well as having the opportunity to capture the memorable moment on camera.

Also returning to Bluewater for Christmas 2022 is the outdoor, undercover Ice Rink. The rink will sit under a clear roof, making it the perfect

activity come rain, snow, or shine this festive season. Bluewater’s Ice Rink will open daily from Thursday 17th November until Sunday 1st January 2023**

Offering plenty of fun for guests of all ages, the Ice Rink will be running quiet sessions, as well as parent and toddler sessions for budding skaters. Penguin and seal skating aids will be available for little ones, and the ice rink’s party nights are back by popular demand - with live DJs playing classic party anthems to soundtrack your skating session.

Opening on Saturday 12th November, Winterland is a magical outdoor, festive event where guests can enjoy winter-themed funfair rides, games, and attractions until Sunday 8th January 2023. New for 2022 is the 40-metre high Observation Wheel***.

The luminaire promenade will light the way into the festive fun and provide an Instagrammable backdrop for guests. There will be an exciting range of white-knuckle rides on offer, along with family favourites - the bumper cars and waltzers! For the first time ever, Winterland will

become home to a 40-metre-high Observation Wheel, providing guests with spectacular views over Bluewater and the surrounding GreenFlag status parkland. The Observation Wheel will be suitable for guests of all ages, and able to accommodate groups of up to 6 people. To fight the chill and get into the festive spirit, guests can sip a hot mulled wine or winter spiced cider, whilst children can enjoy a deluxe hot chocolate. There will be a great range of food on offer too, including festive sweet treats.

James Waugh, Centre Director at Bluewater, said: “The ‘Believe’ Christmas grotto was fantastically received last year and, with a few magical enhancements, we’re excited to announce that it’s back for 2022. What we love about ‘Believe’ is that it offers a full festive, interactive experience as well as the chance to meet Santa himself which will create Christmas memories to treasure forever.

“While guests join us for their annual Christmas grotto visits, the Ice Rink and Winterland will be right outside, providing parents with all the components they need for a fantastic family day out this Christmas. KEEP WARM THIS WINTER

Welcome to the latest edition of Senior Snippets: the monthly advisory column with the older members of our community in mind, brought to you by Christina Uppenkamp, Director of Home Instead Dartford.

Here are some top tips to help you stay warm through the winter months.

Boiler check-up. It is recommended to have an annual boiler service to make sure it’s in tip top condition. The last thing you need in the middle of winter is a broken boiler, and a freezing cold house.

Draught excluders. It is important to make sure all windows and doors are in good condition. If you have old, cracked or broken frames you may want to seal the gaps or use draught excluders to stop the cold weather from creeping in!

Keep your pipes warm. Burst pipes are common during winter due to rapid freezing and thawing which could cause significant damage. The best way to prevent this from happening is to keep your pipes warm with their own foam cardigan (called lagging), which will reduce the heat lost and insulate the pipes to stop them from freezing.

Several thin layers. Try wearing several thin layers of clothing, rather than one big jumper – the layers trap hot air keeping you warmer for longer. To keep heating bills down, consider wrapping up in a blanket or wearing more layers, rather than turning up the thermostat.

Keep your feet warm. There’s nothing worse than cold feet! To keep yourself warm this winter, ear thermal or thick socks and sensible shoes if you’re venturing out. Wear boots with a thick lining and consider buying specially designed shoes, in case the weather turns icy!

Hot water bottle. Consider using a hot water

bottle throughout the day if you’re at home and during the night in bed. They are relatively inexpensive and very useful, quickly heating up your bed without using electricity or fuel.

Bleed radiators. Trapped air in your radiators can prevent hot water from circulating effectively, which could be the reason your home isn’t as warm as it has been previously. Bleeding your radiators releases the trapped air and allows your central heating to work once again, keeping you and your property warm.

Louise Buckley at KatieB Kids nursery in Stone, Dartford says that, particularly following the global pandemic, parents are becoming increasingly anxious about delays in their children’s speech. Children need words to be able to understand what they read, and to be able to make guesses when they can’t understand. They work things out using the words they know - their vocabulary. It helps them to be able to write in a more interesting way, and to explain themselves to other people and pre-school children need to develop these skills to reach their full potential.

MENOPAUSE MATTERS

Menopause is defined as the time when your periods end. It happens when the ovaries are unable to produce the hormones progesterone and oestrogen. The average age of natural menopause is 51 years, but it can occur earlier or later, and can be brought on by treatments for cancer, such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy, or if the ovaries are surgically removed. Perimenopause, the time between the beginning of menopausal symptoms and when periods stop, can last for several years, during which time the hormones can fluctuate.

How do I know if I am going through the menopause?

Menopause symptoms can start when you are still having regular periods. There are lots of symptoms that can be caused by menopause, as discussed below. However, these symptoms can also have other causes. Please speak to a doctor if you find these symptoms troublesome. Physical symptoms include hot flushes, night sweats, insomnia, palpitations, vaginal dryness, bladder problems, joint aches and headaches. Hot flushes and night sweats are the most common symptom, affecting 60-85% of women. Night sweats can cause insomnia. Post-menopause, women find that their skin feels drier, itchy and bruises easily and they may experience some hair loss.

Women can also experience psychological symptoms such as mood swings, irritability, anxiety, difficulties concentrating, difficulties coping and forgetfulness. Whilst some of these symptoms can be menopause related, and can be affected by sleep disturbances, this is also a time of life where there are additional life stresses related to work pressures, teenagers and aging parents that may contribute.

Sexual problems can be caused by lack of oestrogen leading to vaginal dryness, making sex uncomfortable. As men and women get older, their libido can decrease. Dealing with menopausal symptoms can improve general feelings of wellbeing, which can sometimes help with libido.

Do I need a blood test?

If you are at the normal age for menopause and have the classic symptoms, then a blood test is not needed. These can be misleading during perimenopause as the hormones can fluctuate from normal to abnormal. The blood tests are also inaccurate if you are taking any hormonal treatments including some contraceptive pills. We usually diagnose and manage menopause on the history and symptoms. However, if you are going through an early menopause or your doctor suspects another reason for your symptoms, then a blood test may be suggested.

What can I do about my symptoms?

Hormone replacement therapy is an option for many women. This helps to stabilise the fluctuating hormones and can improve many symptoms. However, not all symptoms may be due to hormones and HRT isn’t always a magic pill. If you are interested in exploring if it may be an option for you, speak to your GP. There are alternatives to HRT for women who can’t have hormone treatment. Your GP can also advise you about these.

Wearing natural fabrics in loose layers and keeping your bedroom cool at night can help with flushes and night sweats. There are lots of innovative products on the market from cooling sheets to fans

that you can wear around your neck. Reducing caffeine, avoiding spicy foods or those containing monosodium glutamate and staying at a healthy weight may also help. Diabetes, thyroid problems, other health conditions and some medications can also cause flushes/sweats.

Doing pelvic floor exercises can help with some bladder problems and your doctor or nurse can advise if you need hormone treatment (vaginal oestrogen) or a pessary. Non-hormonal vaginal moisturisers can be used to help with vaginal dryness.

Menopause is something that all women will go through and menopausal symptoms will affect 70% of us. There are lots of things that can help.

In this month’s article we look at the growing range of electric models including a high end new SUV model.

2023 Ford Mustang – The new Ford Mustang retains V8 power and a manual gearbox, while also offering improved performance. This will be the seventh-generation model of the sports car that will be arriving late next year. It will be offered with a familiar 5.0-litre V8 engine that has been tweaked to maximise performance and fuel efficiency. Power figures are yet to be released, but the new Mustang is expected to produce slightly more than the current car’s 453bhp. As with the current car, a 2.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine will also be offered. Visually, the new Mustang features a familiar design that is much sharper than the current car’s. However, there are now strong differences between models. The V8, for example, gets a more aggressive grille and an extra pair of air intakes for cooling. With no prices announced yet the new Mustang will be offered in both coupé and convertible forms, starting at around £55,000.

2023 Jeep Avenger electric SUV – the new Jeep Avenger electric SUV can travel for up to 248 miles between charges, with plug-in and mild hybrid versions on the way. The Jeep Avenger is powered by either two or four 94bhp electric motors, depending on whether you opt for a two or four-wheel drive model. That means up to 376bhp should be available if you go for the most powerful version. When the battery pack details comes out it could be the one which means a 10-80% charge could take as little as 30 minutes if you can find a suitably powerful charging point, with an official range of 248 miles. Both plug-in hybrid and mild-hybrid variants of the Avenger will join the line-up later on. It’s expected that mild-hybrid versions will use the 1.2-litre petrol engine that we recommend in various models from Peugeot and Vauxhall. The Avenger features including LED rear lights and bold front grille, which will be blanked off on pure electric versions. Prices are expected to start from around £30,000, with the plug-in and mild hybrid versions costing slightly less when its on sale in summer of 2023.

2023 Ferrari Purosangue SUV– The Purosangue – which means ‘thoroughbred’ in Italian – is the brand’s first production four-door four-seater. It features a monstrous 715bhp 6.5-litre V12 petrol engine, making this the most powerful SUV you can buy. With a top speed of 192mph its fuel consumption have not been announced but expected to have options for all including a plug-in hybrid and mild hybrid versions. Passengers will get into the Purosangue via rear-hinged doors with a 10.2in infotainment screen for all uses. It will be the largest family car from Ferrari when released in 2023 and prices expected to start from around £390,000.

The Osmonds – A New Musical

The Osmonds: A New Musical with story by Jay Osmond tells the true story of the five brothers from Utah who were pushed into the spotlight as children and went on to create smash hits, decade after decade. From their star residency on The Andy Williams Show from 1962 to 1969, to pop stars and ‘Osmondmania’ from 1971 to 1975, to the arrival of The Donny & Marie Show, a popular variety TV show, from 1976 to 1979, The Osmonds lived a remarkable life recording chart-topping albums, selling out vast arena concerts and making record-breaking TV shows - until one bad decision cost them everything.

The musical features a list of 1970s anthems, including One Bad Apple, Down by the Lazy River, Crazy Horses, Let Me In, Love Me for a Reason,(We’re) Having a Party, Puppy Love, Long Haired Lover From Liverpool, Paper Roses, and many more. Jay Osmond sat down to answer a few questions after the world premiere of The Osmonds – A New Musical.

What’s your favourite Osmonds song and why? Love me for a Reason. Because ‘let the reason be

love’ is a message that is so powerful. But Crazy Horses would be my next choice. You did karate as a young man. Still doing the fancy kicks?

No, not nowadays. But I keep fit. I’m a walker - I love to walk. And I love football. I’m also doing the Pure Trim diet at the moment. It’s organic and very pure and I have lost 30lb in the last 6 months.

Big families usually mean hand-me-downs.

Did you have hand-me-downs?

We had so many clothes thrown at us in the 70s that we didn’t need to hand down. But when I look back at some of the things we wore - wow! But hey, it was the 70s and we all wore crazy stuff. I can’t wait for people to see the costumes in this show!

What’s your most memorable moment of being in The Osmonds?

So many, but one that stands out is the night we went to watch Led Zeppelin in concert. We were introduced to the guys and they were just the nicest people! Robert Plant asked us to join them on stage for Stairway to Heaven. We weren’t sure that their audience would appreciate us, but eventually we said OK. Robert introduced us as his brand new friends. I played percussion and conga. It was incredible!

What is your philosophy for life?

Go about life and do good. Because when you do good, you feel good. And have a purpose. Be a light to others. To me, that’s the goal in life. It’s the key.

How do you want people to be feeling when they have seen your show?

I want people to walk out of the theatre feeling lifted and excited about life; to feel joy. That’s my goal.

BAKEWELL SLICES

This recipe will make about 18 slices.

What you need:

For the base:

300g Plain Flour

50g Icing Sugar

150g Cold Butter, cubed

3-4 Tbsp Cold water

For the filling:

3-4 Tbsp Raspberry Jam

200g Butter

200g Caster Sugar

200g Ground Almonds

1tsp Almond Essence (optional)

1 Large Egg

For the topping:

100g Icing Sugar

You’ll also need an 8” square cake tin and some baking beans (or a bag of copper coins).

What to do: Preheat your oven to 180° C Fan.

Put the Plain Flour and Icing Sugar in a large bowl.

Add the cold, cubed Butter and rub the flour into the butter – using only your fingertips – until the mix resembles fine breadcrumbs.

Add the cold water, little by little until you can combine the mixture into a dough. Pop int the fridge for a few minutes. Press the dough evenly into the cake tin. Cover the dough with a piece of silver foil and place baking beans or copper coins on the foil.

Bake in the oven for 15 minutes – the beans/coins will ensure the dough doesn’t rise too much.

Remove the beans/coins and foil and bake for a further 10 minutes.

Take out of the oven and leave to cool slightly while you make the filling.

In a small saucepan melt the Butter. Remove from the heat and stir in the Sugar, Ground Almonds, Egg and AlmondEssence (if using).

Spread the Jam over the baked base and spoon the rest of the filling evenly on top. Bake in the oven for 25-30 minutes, until golden brown and firm to the touch. Take out of the oven and leave to cool.

For the topping, add cold water to the Icing Sugar to make a pourable consist ency and smooth evenly across the top. If you like you could colour some of icingand add details/patterns to the top.

Leave for 20-30 minutes until the icing has set completely.

Cut into slices and enjoy! xxx
