sacrifices made to ensure that we live in a more equal society today.” Councilor Patsy Thurlow said, “It was an honour to unveil the new flower bed to mark the 100th anniversary of women being given the vote. They fought hard and long, they didn’t give up, women from all walks of life joined the struggle, thousands upon thousands of women marched, held rallies and marched again. I’m very proud to be a woman, to be called a woman and pleased that Dartford Borough Council has not forgotten just how long and hard women fought to be treated as equals.” Registering to vote is quick and easy and can be done online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote DARTFORD LIVING AT THE DARTFORD FESTIVAL Dartford Living will, once again, be in the town tent at this year’s festival. DARTFORD BOROUGH COUNCIL CELEBRATES 100 YEARS OF VOTES FOR WOMEN 2018 marks 100 years since Parliament passed a law which allowed the first women, and all men, to vote for the first time. Dartford Borough Council are celebrating this milestone with a special commemorative flower bed officially opened by Councilor Patsy Thurlow in Central Park, Dartford on Sunday 10th June 2018. Guests were invited to the opening which included representatives from the Council, Girl Guides, Scouts, Army Cadets, teachers, midwives and other local groups. Council Leader Jeremy Kite also attended the opening and said, “The fight for votes was a matter of equality and it’s one of those issues that’s as relevant today as it was a hundred years ago. I hope that everyone who sees the Council’s remarkable “Votes for Women” flower bed this summer will take a little time to think about the

PUB LANDLORD’S SLIMMING SUCCESS by Adam Joy

Pub Landlord Adam Joy of Dartford’s Bird in Hand defies the odds and loses 10 stone in just 28 weeks! When asked how he did it he replied, “An enormous amount of support from my group, friends, family and pub regulars, by following the Slimming World diet and my competitive spirit.”

In August last year Adam turned forty and looking back at the photos from his party he was ashamed at how big he had become. At his heaviest he weighed in at a whooping 26 stone and 4lbs. The second catalyst Adam said was when he organised a pub day out to Twickenham to watch England play rugby on the 27th November last year. “I took my son with me and our seats were up in the Gods. I began climbing the stairs but had to stop half way up as I was out of breath, I thought to myself I’m forty years old this is no way to live!” The following Monday he joined his local Slimming World group in Crayford and has never looked back! Adam and his Slimming World consultant Sue

Adam has traded in his lifestyle of drinking 50 pints of Stella Artois a week, eating numerous takeaways and junk food. He now follows the Slimming World healthy eating plan, he’s ditched the lager for gin and slimline tonic, but he has to admit that he has greatly reduced his alcohol intake. When asked has exercise played a major role he replied “No, not really at all! For the first 3 1/2 months of the diet I did very little exercise if any! In week seven of my diet I introduced exercise by going swimming 5 times that week, and lost no weight at all. From that week on I cancelled my gym membership and the weight has continued to fall off me, losing on average of over 5lbs a week!” I know exercise is good for you but I’ve found exercising whilst dieting has hampered my weight loss. I plan to lose the weight first and then exercise! He does admit however that he has had a new puppy since the middle of March and walks him daily. Adam has not only found fame with his story hitting the national press a few weeks ago, his story also featured on BBC newsroom South East. “All the attention is very 6

nice” said Adam “but I want to put my story to good use. I want to encourage other men out there to diet who want to. Look, I not only work in a pub but live there as well, I am surrounded by temptation 24/7, my whole life and routine was formerly focused around food and drink.” Adam is so committed to his healthier lifestyle he has now changed all the recipes he uses for his weekly curry night at his pub to low fat healthy ones. “People knew I was on the diet and started requesting I offered Slimming World curries and now that is all I do. I do laugh, men who don’t realise they are eating low fat food comment after how nice the food was and then I tell them it was a Slimming World recipe.” Adam also added that since his new found fame he’s had people contact him from as far away as Wales seeking dieting tips. “All I can say is walking into a Slimming Group for the first time I found intimidating. A room full of 6070 women all chatting looking on with me being one of only a few men there. Once you’ve maneuvered your way around the push chairs and prams and got through that door I’ve never looked back.” Adam cites his group along with Slimming World consultant Sue Gridley have been one of the most supportive influences in his weight loss journey. “Everyone is so warm and welcoming, everyone encourages each other or picks you up if you’ve not expected to lose what you hoped. Sue our consultant is magnificent, she’s so bubbly and committed, she energies our whole group!” When asked about any slimming tips Adam replied: “Make breakfast your biggest meal of the day and try to eat it as early as you can. If you snack during the day keep healthy with fruit or my favourite boiled eggs and raw spinach. I try to eat dinner before six in the evening, ensuring I have plenty of vegetables or salad as part of my meal.” Adam would gladly encourage any man to begin their weight loss journey with Slimming World. He attends the 9.30am Monday morning group at the VCD club in Crayford, there are however many other groups at different times on different days.

LIGHTSHARE HOMESHARE SERVICES by Rebecca Odelowo

• Overnight presence • Staying independent at home for longer What Is the Process? Once you have expressed interest we will have a face to face meeting with you to find out more about the help you require and the type of person you are looking for. Following this, we begin searching for a Homesharer. Once they have been screened and vetted, we will send you profiles of Homesharers that match your requirements. We will then set up a meeting between you and the Homesharer(s). We will be present and we also recommend that you have a family member present too. The process can take up to six weeks. We will keep you informed at every step of the way.

What is Homeshare? Our Homeshare service is a scheme that matches two individuals together, a Householder and a Homesharer. A Homesharer is a kind and caring vetted individual who is able to provide ten hours of support each week. In exchange for this support, a Householder provides rent free accommodation for the Homesharer. Homesharers can also contribute to your household bills if required. What Support Can I Receive? The type of support you can receive is tailored to you and what you would like the Homesharer to help with. Typical tasks Homesharers can help with include shopping, cooking, cleaning, technical support, help with pets, gardening, laundry, help with appointments and outings, overnight presence and companionship. Homesharers are not registered carers so they cannot help with personal care (toileting, washing and dressing or medication), however they can give a friendly reminder to take medication. What are the Benefits of Homeshare? • Help with everyday tasks that are becoming more difficult • Lasting friendships • Reduction in the cost of care visits • Support for Carers 8

How Much Does it Cost? The cost of our programme is free to Householders. How does Lightshare Support the Match? Once a Homesharer has moved in, your Homeshare Coordinator will call every month and visit every two months at a time convenient to you and the Homesharer. You are more than welcome to contact us in the meantime if you need any support. The Next Steps If you are interested in our Homeshare programme, please contact us on 0330 111 4292, email us at info@lightshare. co.uk or write to us at Lightshare Homeshare Services, 86-90 Paul Street, London, EC2A 4NE. BIP BOP BLOG by Charlotte Wise

A Summer BBQ - Hotel Campanile Style! Hello DL Readers! Summer really is in full swing and I had the pleasure of attending a lovely summer community event at the Hotel Campanile in Dartford. Situated in Crossways, Dartford, the Hotel Campanile is surrounded by a beautiful garden area with a lakeside view, and considering it is so near to the ‘wonderful’ Dartford Crossing, I was genuinely surprised with how picturesque and peaceful it was. The weather was glorious and we sat outside and enjoyed a free BBQ, Pimms and other delicious refreshments. I should say, it wasn’t just your standard hot dog and burger

- this was POSH BBQ food with all the trimmings and you know what they say - everything tastes better when it’s free! Yum yum! There was even a live band and beautiful cakes for sale. Eddy and his team at the hotel did a fantastic job of making the evening a great success. We all had a lovely time and even raised some money for the Ellenor charity too. If you missed it, don’t worry, the hotel are looking to host more events in the future so make sure you keep an eye out on their events section of their website www. campanile.com Until next time Charlotte x BipBopShop Facebook/Twitter/Instagram @bipbopmum Visit the website BipBopShop.com Now Aw Winn ard ing!

VADS IN DARTFORD DURING WORLD WAR 1 - Par t 2 by Sarah Snow

Dartford Hospitals and the role of nurses and VADs in them. As I mentioned in the last article, VADs performed many roles in hospitals both in the UK and abroad. Their duties were those we might now ascribe to Nursing Assistance. We have interesting information concerning VADs and nursing in one particular hospital in Dartford courtesy of an unusual source. In 2013 a battered old suitcase was discovered in a cupboard at the University of Abertay in Dundee. It had belonged to Margaret Maule who had been part of Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Nursing Service. QAIMNS was formed in 1902 and was the successor of the Army Nursing Service which had been established during the Crimean War to help those injured soldiers. Why Margaret’s case ended up in Dundee remains a mystery as she was born in Paisley in 1887 and returned to nursing after the war and appears to have had no connection to the university what so ever. In 1969 she was sent a letter of appreciation for her service by the Ministry of Defence on the occasion of her retirement after 52 years of service at the age of 82. What makes her of interest to us is that in her case were mementoes, poems, sketches, paintings and an autograph book along with thank you notes from her German POW patients; all souvenirs from her time at The Southern Hospital. From these articles we learn how professional Margaret was as a nurse. In her diaries it mentions how initially, she was unsure about treating enemy soldiers as her own brother has been killed during the spring campaigns of 1917. But, in spite of this, the letters show that she cared for and about the patients in her charge at Dartford.

outbreak of hostilities. VADs came from all walks of life and their only commonality was their desire to DO something. As well as serving within the UK, many went overseas to the various theatres of war. Many of these girls had never left their villages before, let alone travel across the Channel. Although some biographies and accounts of their exploits do survive, for the most part, the girls returned to their pre-war lives and vanished into obscurity. In compiling the details for these articles, I have read numerous accounts and details from distinguished historians and academics such as Christine Hallett and have found details in newspapers (The Guardian and Daily Mail) and in earlier publications, but what I am really looking for now, is accounts of local people who have stories to tell of their dealings with these World War One hospitals. As the centenary of the end of war is upon us, I realise many of these stories are going to have been passed on through the generations (what granny – or great granny - did during the Great War) or maybe, like Margaret’s case, details lie hidden in attics forgotten for decades, just waiting to be rediscovered. In my opinion what these women did has been overlooked by too many for too long and I would like to think that we can resurrect their valiant efforts and once more bring their deeds to the fore. If you have any information concerning these valiant ladies please share them with me via email at snowbritnj@gmail.com. Thank you Sarah

Margaret was a qualified nurse but many of the girls who worked in these hospitals were not qualified before the 12

LIFE UNDER THE STAIRS

by Local Resident, Jane Stevenson WHO CARES FOR THE CARERS Life Under the Stairs was put on hold last month, as OH fell up a kerb and managed to fracture his arm in two places, dislocate and shatter his elbow joint and bruise his ego.

We waited two weeks for an upper limb surgeon to rebuild the joint and re-attach all the broken bits. During that time I found myself thrown into the deep end regarding practical caring. OH did all this damage to his right arm. Straight away it was obvious even the simplest of tasks were beyond his ability. Even popping a painkiller from the foil was impossible. It was then I realised how much full time carers work. And it frightened me! In the past month I have had to wash and dress him, cut up his food although being creative with a menu helps – curries can be eaten with a spoon, and be on hand to open the fruit squash, get him in bed, drive him around and fill up the vape! He, on the other hand, can’t hold a book, write, shave properly dry himself or undo a packet of biscuits. He’s been given painkillers that reduce him to a zombie like state, where he tries to sleep, but with a large cast from shoulder to wrist, getting comfortable is almost impossible. So he would spend a greater part of the night sitting up staring into the garden. I’ve taken on the ‘blue’ jobs – mowing the lawn, fighting the weeds, cleaning the windows and washing out the wheelie bins as well as those traditionally ‘pink’ tasks I already do. Plus I work for a charity two days a week, from home, thank goodness. I’ve crammed all this into a normal 24 hour day. I reckon full time and long term carers must operate on a totally different time scale from the rest of us. It also begs the questions, what support do they get? Once OH was discharged from the very capable staff

at Darent Valley Hospital, we were cast adrift. There simply isn’t anywhere to go for advice and ideas on how best help the invalid. The learning curve is a vertical line. Thankfully he is on the mend. The cast has been replaced with a brace which gives him the look of a benign Terminator, being all metal, dials and straps. Thankfully I know he ‘will be back’, and I can scale back my caring. Probably better for both of us in the long run. It has certainly made me think that we need to care for the carers – there is no end to that type of commitment. THE TV RETURNS - PART THREE OF THE SAGA The Towers now sports a brand new chimney and the aerial has been fixed. We have TV again. However, the new brickwork puts the rest of the house to shame; clearly we need a full make over to repaint and repair – another item on the to do list. None of this would have been done without the help of a local building company, SJ Construction (UK) Ltd. We were given a full description of what was needed and a very reasonable quote. We had a personal service throughout, with Ben (owner) doing the work himself, and replacing the odd broken tile when found. After a couple of days letting the work settle, he climbed up again and fixed the aerial. The job was completed quickly with no mess, plus he put in some air bricks that were missing from the original, thus ensuring we won’t suffer from damp in the future. I like supporting local companies, having fended off the nationals, especially those trying to sell windows and paving. Ben was professional, knowledgeable and kind. You’re welcome to view the work at the Towers if you’re so inclined. OH and I would recommend SJ Construction to anyone looking for a local builder. See you next month

PAUL PAGE GOLF ACADEMY by Sarah Page

The Paul Page Golf Academy is a picturesque 9-hole, par 3 golf course, situated at Princes Park in Dartford. It provides the opportunity to play golf, learn golf, and join as a member but more importantly it is open to everyone. The golf course, that is situated on the same site as Dartford FC, is an established golf course in Dartford. It’s a hidden gem that you need to see to believe.

Paul Page feels that golf doesn’t need to be expensive and you can have the same great experience as larger clubs at the Paul Page Golf Academy. Club and ball hire are available (free for under 18’s) so there is no need to spend lots of money on golf equipment. The course is great for families. So why not pop down for a round of Golf and see what they have to offer. To find out more or to book lessons visit

www.thepaulpagegolfacademy.co.uk

The running of the course was taken over by Paul Page in April 2018 and the course has undergone a number of upgrades, including a reception area just by the 1st tee and also an indoor simulator studio where golf tuition by Paul can be purchased. Paul Page is a fully qualified PGA Coach who famously beat Tiger Woods in the US Amateur Championship! Paul boasts a wealth of expertise and knowledge in the game. The course is open to everyone. All levels are catered for. The course is not too demanding for beginners, yet challenging for advanced players looking to improve their short game skills. It is a relaxed, friendly, personal establishment. Not intimidating especially for new golfers. The addition of the indoor simulator studio means you can learn golf or improve your game without the disruption of the English weather. Paul will visually analyse your swing with the aid of ‘Sky Trak’ technology to measure several key statistics including: carry distance, total distance, club head speed, ball speed, launch angle, side-spin and accuracy.

TRAVEL SPOTLIGHT HARDEN HOLIDAYS by Tim Harden

Travel spotlight –Harden Holidays I received a great response to my column last month, so I thought I would take a similar path this time. Previously I described my career to date and what led me to open Dartford’s only travel agency. Now I thought I would talk you through some of the current promotions and activities we’ve been working on recently.

charity of the year. Our first fund-raising effort was their Walkathon in May, 26.2 miles from the Tower of London to Northfleet. It was far tougher than we gave it credit for, but the aches, pains and blisters were well worth it. We had some fantastic support and eventually raised £337.50, way over the target we set ourselves, and we thank everyone who kindly sponsored. We’ll be taking part in their accumulator challenge from the1st Sept onwards, and I’m sure there’ll be other fund-raising throughout the year.

VOYAGER CLUB First, I would like to guide you through our new Voyager Club rewards scheme. We appreciate every one of our clients and needed a way to express that, hence the Voyager Club. Members receive points for the holidays they take, but also for leaving reviews and referring their friends. The points can then be redeemed for holiday discounts, branded gifts, parking, city tours, etc. But the Club is more than that, it’s about building a community spirit around the store, about getting to know our clients better. RECIPE - OATY FRIDGE COOKIES by Debbie Dickinson

Oaty Fridge Cookies I love these because the dough keeps perfectly in the fridge for a couple of weeks - that means you can have delicious freshly baked cookies whenever you like!

mix until pale and fluffy. As always remember to scrape the sides of the bowl to mix evenly!

You’ll need: 200g Softened butter 1tsp Vanilla extract 100g Icing sugar 200g Plain flour 100g Porridge oats

Using clingfilm to help you, mould the dough into a sausage shape and pop into the fridge for an hour or so. When ready to bake, cut the ‘sausage’ into 1cm slices and lay on a lined baking tray.

What to do: Cream the butter and vanilla extract until soft. Add the icing sugar and

Bake at 160°C for 10-15 minutes until lightly golden (or baked to your liking!)

Sift in the flour and mix to combine, then stir in the oats.

MONEY ADVICE by CAP

Ten totally free ways to entertain the kids this summer Go football mad If the World Cup has your kids craving a kick-about, get them to a football coaching session hosted by FA Lidl Skills during the summer holidays. Depending on the group, sessions are either free or come with a very small fee. Visit faskills.thefa.com to find out more and search for sessions near you. Make a racket For those that are more Rafael Nadal than Raheem Sterling, there’s free access to tennis courts in various places around the UK through Tennis For Free. Working with local councils, the initiative aims to improve mental and physical health while encouraging people to make use of public facilities. Visit tennisforfree.com to see what’s available in your area. Get in to festivals for free If you want to go to a festival or exhibition this summer but are put off by the price, volunteering will often get you free entry. Provided you can delegate childcare during shifts, this is a frugal way to take the family away for a few days of fun. Geocache up Take the kids out for a spot of geocache hunting. A favourite with kids (and big kids), simply download the free Geocaching app, create an account and you’re good to go. Check out your church What events are going on at your local church over the summer? Check their website or noticeboard for kids’ groups, family days out, barbeques and summer fairs. Adventure in a book (or six) Local libraries are an ideal place to find free events going on. Find out if a library near you is involved in the Summer Reading Challenge. This year’s theme is Mischief Makers – perfect for your little rascals! Visit readingagency.org. uk/children to find out more.

WEBSITE: www.capuk.org TELEPHONE: 0800 328 0006 All over the UK, events will be hosted to encourage and celebrate children’s right to play – how great is that? Visit playday.org.uk to find events near you. Find crafts in the countryside The Woodland Trust offers a bunch of great downloadable craft resources online at woodlandtrust.org.uk/ naturedetectives. Get out in the garden or go for a walk to collect some bits to use, such as acorns, petals and leaves. Build a hedgehog house This is a fun and creative activity for kids, as well as helping to prevent the decline of the UK’s hedgehog population. Take an old cardboard box and cut two thin air vents in the sides and a small doorway in the front. Place in a quiet, sheltered spot, such as under a bush. Cover with plastic to keep it dry and fill with shredded newspaper and dry grass or straw. Cover and surround the box with dry leaves, twigs and other bits of shrubs you can find in your garden. According to the RSPB, you should avoid disturbing the house between May and September – see rspb.org.uk for more tips on building a safe and comfortable house for your hedgehogs. Perk up a rainy day Of course, even the best laid plans can be rained off. Should you find yourselves stuck indoors, why not challenge the kids to put on a variety show (they could act, dance, play an instrument, read a story, perform some comedy or magic)? Paint plant pots, ready for when the weather perks up. Or build a den using chairs, sheets and cushions, and set up a laptop inside for a cosy makeshift cinema. Are you living on a low income or tight budget? Do you want to learn simple and effective ways to make the most of your money? Or maybe you are struggling with debts? Don’t panic. Give CAP a call on 0800 328 0006 or visit capuk.org. to find out about a local CAP money course to help you with budgeting and saving or to find out about your local CAP debt service. All CAP’s services are available to everyone regardless of age, gender, faith or background and are free.

RESCUE IS BEST

by Battersea Dog and Cats Home - Brands Hatch

Neglected four-week-old kitten shows peril of online sales. Battersea recently launched a new campaign to encourage people to adopt rescue dogs and cats after it revealed its rehoming numbers have fallen in recent years as it struggles to compete with unregulated online pet sales. In 2017, Battersea Brands Hatch rehomed just over 500 dogs and cats, a reduction in the number of animals rehomed in the previous year. On average 17 animals come in to the charity every day all needing new homes. Battersea is now warning people not to buy pets online after a helpless four-week-old kitten covered in his own urine was sold on a car boot sale app. T h e t i ny w h i te k i tte n was taken to Battersea's veterinary hospital earlier this year by his new owner, who quickly realised he was far younger than he'd been advertised online. The kitten was so young he could not clean himself properly and was badly scalded from his own excrement. He was severely underweight, in pain and very frightened. Battersea's expert veterinary team gently bathed him and cleaned him up. They named him Nimbus as he resembled a fluffy cloud after his bath. Nimbus faced weeks of treatment to get him to a healthy weight and repair the damage done from being separated from his mother at such a young age, so a member of the Battersea veterinary team took him on foster to ensure he got round the clock care and attention that he needed. As he had never been shown how to eat from a bowl by his mother and littermates, Nimbus struggled to feed himself and had to be taught how to eat. He also had to have regular baths to soothe his skin and eye drops for his constant eye infections. Battersea's Head of Catteries, Rob Young, said: "Luckily Nimbus was brought to us just in time as without immediate veterinary care, his future could have been very sad. His story just goes to show how dangerous it is to purchase a pet online - this poor kitten was in an awful state and far younger than he'd been advertised. Buyers are being

duped and we're seeing more and more people bringing animals bought online to us with the same sad stories. "At Battersea, we'll always get to know the animals in our care so we can give any potential new owner a full picture of their new pet and they can go home reassured they have the perfect fit for their family." After more than a month in Battersea's care, Nimbus made a full recovery and became the loving and lively kitten staff knew he could be. After he was microchipped and neutered by Battersea's veterinary staff, he went to a loving new home with his new family. Rob added: "We're so pleased Nimbus got the happy ending he deserved, but we still have dozens of cats and kittens looking for their second chance. If you're interested in rehoming a rescue animal, please visit www.battersea.org.uk." Animals still looking for a home: Dog Sidney, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Male, 2 years old Sidney is a clever dog and loves to learn as well as play. Having been passed around a lot in the past, Sidney has some insecurities, so he’s looking for a settled and patient home who will understand his needs. Sidney is an energetic dog and loves his tennis balls and footballs, but he is also a keen learner who already knows a couple of commands and tricks that he can show off to you. Cat Pepper, Domestic Short-hair, Male, 2 years old Pepper is a loving and affectionate cat who enjoys the quiet company of people. This black cat can be worried with new noises and smells, but once Pepper gains a bit of confidence, he is eager to make friends. He likes to give big head bumps to his favourite people. Pepper will need a garden in his new home. If you are interested in rehoming Sidney or Pepper, or any other of the dogs and cats currently looking for homes, please visit www.battersea.org.uk or contact bbh.rehomers@battersea.org.uk

WHAT IS DARTFORD BIG LOCAL by Dartford Big Local

Hi everyone, let me introduce myself. I’m Shirley and I’m the Dartford Big Local Coordinator. I’m the one that looks more like a baboon than a butterfly in the picture!

You may have heard of us, but not quite sure what we do or what we are about? Briefly, we are a resident led group who have the challenge of investing £1m of Lottery money into the local area to bring communities together and empower local residents to make change. So, what do we actually do?

We have a Community Chest fund of up to £1000 for small community projects. If you have an idea of what the community needs, talk to us, we might be able to support you making

it happen. Examples of what we have funded - Sea cadets on a residential trip of a lifetime - Free facepainting workshops during the school holidays - Over 55’s trips to the seaside this summer - Dartford Boccia club for new competition standard equipment and uniforms

We have recently brought in a youth worker, Ivan, to address an area the community told us they want us to invest in. He has already put on some successful footballing sessions over the half term. Next month we will update you more on his plans. We are opening a Town Centre Hub in the old Boots/D&A building that will encompass both Community and Entrepreneurial spirit. As you walk into the building you will find a showcase of the best of Dartford area’s produce. It may be No Frills Joe beer from Greenhithe or Children’s gifting from Bip 30

Bop Shop. If you have a product you would like to sell in our shop, please get in touch. You will then find a one stop shop for all things community and we will have a trusted businesses area where you can support local businesses. As you move upstairs there is a co-working space to support the growing need for those who flexibly work or have started their own small businesses. We also plan to build a support system to help upskill residents so they can start a new career, supporting back to work mums, those who have unfortunately found themselves made redundant midlife, or even retirees who aren’t quite ready for the scrap heap! We are also developing projects around our themes of “Love of Food” and “Fit, Healthy and Well” We have a project in action called “The Big Eat” where we will be running courses to teach residents how to grow their own produce through to cooking healthy food from it. We need your help to understand how to get Dartford moving more (I mean our bodies, not the traffic on a Friday afternoon). We are working with the running community but we need to know for those of you who want to be more active, what is hindering you and what might we be able to put in place to help you? Where do you come in? We are always looking for people to get involved; this is after all a community project. We are looking for people to partner up with to help deliver community projects, or people to join the Partnership and help us steer the way. What we need to make clear is this can never be political or about personal agendas. It is about residents and community. Where we work with Councillors we make it very clear politics needs to stay at the door. So, if you want to get involved, however large or small, you can follow us on FB/Twitter and our website is www. dartfordbiglocal.co.uk or contact me to arrange a chat on 07188 488 538/ shirleysmith@dartfordbiglocal.co.uk We will be at the Dartford Festival this year so please come and see us and share your views. Next month we’ll introduce you to some of the partnership and give you an update on the outcomes from the Festival.

SPORTS NEWS Bav’s Sporting Comment

History will be made during this Football World Cup. A referee will ask for support from a control room comprised of a team of four officials with access to 33 camera angles, including eight in super slow motion and four in ultra-slow motion. The referee on the ground and his “eye in the sky” will dissect an incident and the VAR (video assistant referee) system will be in use for the first time at a World Cup. We have learned so far from the introduction of VAR; that is unlikely to be the end of the story. The theory behind VAR is simple: more accurate decisions, more often, and at the most important points in matches. The on-pitch referee makes all the same calls, at the same speed and unaided, as he would without the system in place. A study by Belgian university into 1,000 competitive matches using VAR suggests the system is a success in general terms… the system improves decision accuracy from 93% to 98.8%, and 9% of matches were shown to have had a different, and probably fairer, result than would have been the case without VAR. However, it is those individual moments where VAR has faltered or failed that are its most memorable!

Upcoming events in July include: 1: Formula 1 - Austrian Grand Prix, Spielberg 2-15: Tennis - Wimbledon 6-7: Football - World Cup quarter-finals 7-29: Cycling - Tour de France 8: Formula 1 - British Grand Prix, Silverstone 10: Football - World Cup semi-final, St Petersburg 11: Football - World Cup semi-final, Moscow 14-15: Athletics - World Cup London 2018, London Stadium 15: Football - World Cup final, Moscow 19-22: Golf - The Open, Carnoustie 21-22: Athletics - London Anniversary Games, London Stadium 21 July-5 Aug: Hockey - Women’s World Cup, London 22: Formula 1 - German Grand Prix, Hockenheim 28-29: Cycling - Ride London-Surrey 29: Formula 1 - Hungarian Grand Prix, Budapest

4ROLES4GOALS By Nicola Coppen

I can’t possibly start an article about 4Roles4Goals without a comment on the start of the World Cup, indeed this morning as I sat at my desk I have been the subject of jokes because of pulling Argentina out of the hat in the sweepstake! Can you imagine how the Argentinian players felt? In contrast the elation of the Croatian Team? Seeing the shot of the crowd so devastated at the defeat of Argentina by Croatia was more than just a loss of a game to them, it was a reputational disaster. This got me thinking. How many people out there have an expectation of an outcome thrust upon them by managers, parents, teachers, coaches or friends? At this time of year with exams, I can imagine in particular the pressure on young people – which typically also morphs into the dreaded careers conversations and again aspirations of others!

do accountancy – indeed do YOU want to go for a career in accountancy?” “Yes, accountancy is good, but I don’t know what types there are”

All I would like to do is make a plea – to everyone – Young People really don’t have to know what they want to do for a living, but they do need to know their particular interests and motivators.

4Roles4Goals prides itself on focusing on the Young Person and their development of soft skills, providing them with real world interactive work experiences to show the wealth of careers available to them – and to remove the focus from the ‘traditional’ roles within particular sectors to the full range for consideration. Our experiences have been able to show Young People that hospitality is more than just working in restaurants and bars, there are sporting arenas which require specialist hospitality – like our British Super Bikes (BSB) event and enabling the Young People to see the wealth of careers within one section of the TycoBMW BSB Team – the VIP hospitality complete with chef, translators, press, serving

Through my Business Mentoring or Career Days in Colleges and Academies in Kent, I have experienced the student who says they have been told that because they are good at maths, they need to go into accountancy. This then creates the following conversation pattern: “What kind of accountancy?” I ask “Erm…with maths” they say “Yes, maths but what area and industry would you like to 34

So in just a few sentences, I get to understand lots about the Young Person and the way the future career has been suggested to them. Most have said that I am the first person to not talk about what career they want to do, but to understand what their interests and particular skills are and what they want from a future. In other words, there is a career word e.g. Accountancy, but there is an industry requirement for the Young Person to consider to specific the type of accountant they want to be.

staff and evening entertainment.

be proud of their own paths.

We love empowering Young People and ‘educating them by stealth’, out of a school environment, but truly connecting with the community and careers out there! You want to see how nervous Business Owners or Community Leads get when they know they are going to be interviewed by Young People! By reversing the tables, all parties involved come out of comfort zones temporarily!

About the author: Nicola is one of the Co-Founders of 4Roles4Goals and owns a Project Management Consultancy, Diligence (PM) Services Ltd. So back to the original lines and that disappointment felt by the Players and Supporters of Argentina – a world stage with no possibility of hiding reactions – and then the elation of Croatia. No doubt Argentina will come out on the pitch next week with a totally different attitude (if they came out expecting to win and not work hard then what a lesson they have learnt). But we don’t want this for our Young People. We want them to always feel like the Croatian Team – doing their best, achieving and having the support and encouragement to break free from the expectation of an outcome thrust upon them by managers, parents, teachers, coaches or friends, and into a world of their own. They’ll win some, lose some but overall, they will

5 STEPS TO SURVIVE YOUR HOLIDAY, WEIGHT IN TACT By Mark Broadbent It’s a common complaint that people work hard to lose weight for a holiday, and then gain it all back again in just a week or two away.

it! Enjoy the foods you enjoy, but if there’s a better option that you’ll enjoy just as much, take it.

This needn’t be the case and there are a few things you can do in the build up to your holidays and also while you’re away to mitigate this.

Step 4 is to reduce liquid calories as much as possible. As I mentioned above, if you want a drink on holiday then I’m not going to tell you otherwise, but if you can reduce the amount by even a little bit, you’re saving yourself calories and regaining as much weight. Try to drink more water in general or have a glass of water between other drinks to stay hydrated and slow down your liquid calorie consumption. This includes ALL alcoholic drinks and mixers, even fruit juice and “diet” options. Just be aware of how many calories you’re drinking and if you can swap the odd one for a water, definitely do it. As an added bonus, this may stop you from getting quite as drunk and feeling quite as bad in the morning.

Step 1 is don’t feel guilty. You’ve [probably] worked hard all year to go on your holiday, and you want to enjoy it. Feeling guilty about what you’re eating isn’t a good way to enjoy yourself. So remember, you’ve earned this holiday and you’re entitled to have a drink and eat nice food if you so wish. That being said, you don’t have to go crazy just because you’re “on holiday”. You can still be sensible and have nice food without stuffing your face with as much as you can stomach and washing it down with cocktails and shots into the early hours (…or a dozen pints… or endless bottles of wine… or whatever your choice happens to be). All-inclusive isn’t a challenge to get your money’s worth! Step 2 is to consider that it all starts long before you go away. Crash diets aren’t the best way to lose weight. They may work, but it’s stacking the odds that it’ll come back even quicker and easier than you lost it. 2 weeks of starving yourself to lose a few pounds, only to gain that and more in just one week away! Longer periods of more controlled eating will always be better than short, crash diets. The more steadily you lose the weight, the easier it will be to keep it off. Also, eating a bit more sensibly for 8 weeks is much easier than depriving yourself of everything you enjoy for 2 weeks. Step 3 is one that may sound familiar if you’ve read anything I’ve written on nutrition before – choose the better option. In its simplest form, this just means if you have two options in front of you (i.e. on a menu), pick the “healthier” option. If weight loss or keeping the weight off is your thing, then pick the lower calorie option. This doesn’t have to mean eating a salad for every meal; if your choice is between a large or a medium pizza – go medium. If it’s a doner kebab or a burger – go for the burger. Don’t get sucked in to “healthy” or “unhealthy” foods, just choose the better option. By all means though if you want the salad, have

Step 5 is to try to be more active on your holiday! You may go on active holidays, or you may be a sunseeker who’s happy to bask in the sun on a lounger all day. If you’re the latter then you probably struggle with holiday weight gain more than the former. Try to add in something you enjoy and don’t think of it as “exercise” (or it’ll become a chore), just think of it as fun! You could take some walks, join in some fitness classes, go and explore, throw a ball or frisbee around, swim or whatever you want to do. The more active and less sloth-like you can be on your holiday, the more you will counter any excess calorie consumption. You don’t need to be doing a gruelling 2-hour workout each day – just find ways to move a bit more. This may not entirely prevent any holiday weight gain, but if you follow these steps you can at least reduce the amount of weight gain, and still have fun. And enjoy your holidays! INTERVIEW WITH JOE PASQUALE by James Rampton

... Now I’m doing it, and it’s great!” You just hope you have a good landing. I don’t want to be sitting on the sofa at home with my feet up. For me, that’s not experiencing life. I want to do things that really scare me. You have fantastic energy on stage. How do you keep that up? It’s like skimming a stone over the water – if you let it drop, it falls. Being onstage is like juggling two ping-pong balls with two hairdryers. You just have to keep going. I just love stand-up. I hate the travelling and getting stuck in traffic – that’s the curse of this job. But the buzz is still there every time I go on stage.

What can you tell us about your new live stand-up show, Joe Pasquale - A Few Of His Favourite Things”? It will be singing, dancing, music, magic, mind-reading, painting and a lot of audience participation. It’s me going out there and having a laugh. I can’t wait! The tour celebrates your 30-year career in the business. What are your memories of starting out as a stand-up? I never thought I’d still be doing it 30 years later. I initially did it because I didn’t want to work for a living, but 30 years later I’m still doing it. It’s busy, but it doesn’t seem like work at all. Do you look back on your career with pride? I never look back – I learnt that from Bruce Forsyth. He told me, “Never look back, always look forward.” I never watch myself back on TV. You can’t change it, so leave it alone. When I occasionally do, I think, “I wish I’d done that differently.” Do you still love stand-up as much as ever? Definitely. I love that feeling of flying by the seat of your pants. Also, it’s just you. You’re the performer, the producer and the editor. You go on stage and you just go with the flow. I have a rough plan beforehand, then I just see what happens on the night. I like being scared. It makes you realise you’re alive. Tell us more. I still get nervous before going on stage. I’ve done a few parachute jumps, and it’s the same feeling. As you’re about to start, you think, “Oh no, oh no. OK, here we go 42

You have had great reviews and a tremendous audience response to your touring production of Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em. Why has it struck such a chord? There is just nothing like it anymore. People adore these characters, and they immediately recognise them. It’s like putting on a pair of comfortable slippers. From the moment they hear the theme tune, the audience goes with it and we’re off and it’s non-stop laughter for two hours. Why is the character of Frank Spencer such a good fit for you? He is so close to who I am in real life. No acting required! I am accident-prone, and my voice is not a million miles away from Frank’s. I remember watching Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em as a child and thinking, “That’s not a sitcom – it’s my daily life!” That feeling hasn’t changed in the last 40 years. You were also a huge hit as King Arthur in Spamalot and will be once again be starring in panto this year, playing Mr Smee in Peter Pan in Nottingham. What do you love about the theatre? I love the fact that it changes every night. It’s the same as stand-up. You never know what it’ll be like. When you make a film, it is put down on celluloid, and then it’s the same for ever. In the theatre, the performances, the audiences and the atmosphere change every night. You have enjoyed incredible success with your first book first book, Deadknobs and Doomsticks, which was published last year. Yes. It went to number one on the Amazon charts for short horror stories. Stephen King was at numbers two, three and four! I love writing and am already writing a follow up - Deadknobs and Doomsticks 2: Dying for a Sequel. I love being scared and scaring other people.

I don’t want people to have a full-on Stephen King experience when they read my book; I just want to give them the willies! Who are your comedy heroes? Bruce Forsyth, Ken Dodd and Bob Monkhouse. They all had a stage skill that no one has any more. They learned how to work an audience in variety, and they were simply the best at it. My ultimate hero was Bob Monkhouse, as a writer, as a performer and as a man. I knew him very well. He was so generous. He and Ken Dodd really helped me. I’m not sure that camaraderie exists on the comedy circuit any more You made a huge impression winning I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! What did you enjoy most about your time in the jungle? I loved the whole experience, but I particularly loved being away from the phone and emails. Technology is rubbish. It’s going to kill the human race. We all use it all the time, but none of us know how it works. Sooner or later, we’ll all be connected to the mainframe, someone will pull the plug and no one will know what to do. We will all end up living in caves drinking our own wee. But on the back of I’m a Celebrity, I learnt to fly and I did a survival challenge on Alone in the Wild, so I think I could survive as a caveman! There is no end to your accomplishments on TV. You have appeared on everything from Sugar Free Farm and Total Wipeout, to The Prisoner X and Alone in the Wild? What has been your best moment on television? An Audience with Joe Pasquale. I did it straight after I’m a Celebrity, and I loved the experience of performing in front of my peers. It got great figures, too. 13 million people watched it. What was it like voicing characters in animated Hollywood movies such as Garfield – A Tale of Two Kitties and Horton Hears A Who? It was great fun. People know my voice now, and they hire me for that. I love doing voice-overs. I go in, do the job and go home. The only drawback is that you don’t do it with anyone else. You just stand on your own in the studio.

Where does your great sense of adventure come from? I’m very aware of my own mortality. I don’t want to be lying on my deathbed thinking, “Why did I sit there watching TV? Why didn’t I climb Everest? I don’t want to sit around moaning. If there’s something wrong, I do something about it From learning to fly and surviving in the jungle to parachute jumping and marathon running, you always relish a physical challenge. What do you enjoy so much about adrenaline fuelled activities? If it’s dangerous or scary, I’ll have a go. The scarier, the better. They asked me to do both The Island with Bear Grylls and Hunted for charity, but unfortunately I was on tour at the time. I’d love to do those shows. You have achieved so much. Do you still have unfulfilled ambitions? I’ve nearly finished my Open University degree. When I’ve done that, I’d like to go on Strictly Come Dancing. They have often asked me to do reality TV shows like Big Brother. But unless I can learn something from it, I’m not interested. Having done Dancing on Ice, I can still ice skate – very badly! What else? I’d like to get to base camp on Everest and learn how to scuba dive. I like to go walkabout in Australia. I’d also like to go in to space, but I don’t think I’ll have the money for that! How would you sum up your comedy? It’s just me being me. I know that what I do is not important in the slightest. All I do is try to make sure that everyone has a laugh. Life’s too short to take things too seriously. You can buy tickets for Joe Pasquale’s 30th Anniversary Tour - Joe Pasquale - A Few Of His Favourite Things, at: www.joepasquale.com

What advice would you give to young, up-and-coming performers? Enjoy it. It doesn’t matter how much money you make; if you can earn a living from showbiz, that’s a success. Also, don’t stick to a rigid career plan. No one plans any more. The world in such a corrupt state that no one knows what’s going on and planning doesn’t work. You simply have to go with the flow and see what happens. www.dartfordlivinglive.co.uk - www.dartfordliving.com - www.dartfordbusinessdirectory.co.uk

THEATRE ROUNDUP By Liz Dyer

What have been your theatre highlights of 2018 so far? As we’re halfway through the year, let’s have a look back at the shows we’ve enjoyed over the last few months here in Dartford, and take a sneak peek at what’s coming up later in the year. But first, a quick reminder that tickets are now available for the Dartford open air theatre season, which this summer features popular works from Shakespeare, Noel Coward and Gilbert & Sullivan. It’s only £5 for local residents and is always great fun, so don’t miss out! 2018 got off to a great start in January with Cilla the Musical, starring Kara Lily Hayworth, who was selected from 2,000 hopefuls at open auditions. Both the show and its star wowed audiences across the UK, and Dartford was no exception. Then in February, the King was very much alive and well, as This is Elvis marked five decades since Elvis Presley’s ’68 Comeback Special. This spectacular concert proved that although years may have passed, Elvis and his music still live on.

DAODS, who were back at the Orchard in April with the classic musical West Side Story, reminding us yet again how lucky we are to have so much amazing talent right here on our doorstep. May was a month for TV nostalgia, with Kay Mellor’s Fat Friends the Musical a feel-good treat, starring Jodie Prenger and Sam Bailey as mother and daughter (which sort of almost worked). And last month the Orchard was packed to the rafters for award-winning West End sensation Beautiful, which celebrates the life and legend of Carole King. It’s hard to pick just one highlight from each month, though, so we’d love to know what you’ve enjoyed this year! There’s more great entertainment ahead. Ray Quinn is heading off on his Summer Holiday in, er, September, and Dirty Dancing’s back in October, along with Top Hat and Let It Be. The Classic Thriller Company return in November with The Case of the Frightened Lady, followed by a rapid change of tempo as Rock of Ages gets Dartford rocking out to some classic tunes. And then it’s Christmas, and we all know what that means (oh yes we do)! Last month it was announced that this year’s star will be Marti Pellow, and nobody wants to miss that - so get your tickets booked for Aladdin while you still can. For regional and London theatre reviews, visit theblogoftheatrethings.com.

March was a must for Strictly fans, as Vincent and Flavia returned with Tango Moderno. As the name suggests, the show gave a modern twist to the traditional tango by fusing it with street, hip hop and jive, and concluded with a classical tango finale that had the audience up on their feet. The Strictly stars were followed by local heroes 44

CAR NEWS - JULY 2018 By Dhiren Ganesh

In this month’s article we’ll bring you new model versions available in 2018 from a number of European manufacturers.

2018 BMW 8 Series – The new 8 Series is BMW’s flagship car – a luxurious grand tourer that’s designed to compete with rivals such as the Audi A7 Sportback and Mercedes S-Class Coupé. As standard, the car sits on 18in alloy wheels with a larger and more prominent BMW grille. The interior features the new 12.3in digital instrument cluster, which can place interfaces such as the sat-nav map directly in front of you, and a separate 10.3in infotainment touchscreen as standard, as well as a head-up display. The range kicks off with the 840d xDrive diesel, which has a 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine that produces 315bhp and the M850i xDrive, which gets a heady 523bhp from its 4.4-litre V8 petrol engine. Prices for the 8 Series start from £76,270 and is released now. . 2018 Peugeot 508 – this is the new lower and shorter version of the 508. There’s plenty of cutting-edge tech and

46

the promise of dynamic flair to back up the new design. There’s a choice of two 1.6-litre Puretech petrol engines in the 508, with 179bhp and 221bhp, while the BlueHDi diesels are a 129bhp 1.5-litre unit and two 2.0-litre units, with 161bhp and 174bhp. All come as standard with an eight-speed automatic gearbox, except for the 1.5-litre diesel, which gets a six-speed manual as standard, with the automatic as an option. In the 508, analogue dials are replaced by a 12.3in customisable digital instrument display, with a separate standard 8.0in touchscreen given over to infotainment and sat-nav. You also get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring and wireless smartphone charging. Prices start from £25,000 and will be availale from September 2018. 2019 Audi A1 – this is the second-generation Audi A1, which promises improved safety, practicality and quality

to go with its sportier looks. It will be sold only in five-door ‘Sportback’ form; like many car makers, Audi is ditching its three-door offering due to sluggish sales. It will be slightly bigger than the current version by 6cm to 4.03 metres. Most functions are controlled through an 8.8in touchscreen, which incorporates Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring. The centre console is angled towards the driver is also likely to help usability, placing all of the controls on it within easy reach. Numerous petrol engines will be available from launch, ranging from a 94bhp three-cylinder 1.0-litre to a 197bhp four-cylinder 2.0-litre. Pricing hasn’t been announced yet, either, but we’d expect only a slight increase over the outgoing car, which starts at £16,180 for a Sportback and will be available from December 2018.
