that have been severely impacted by Covid-19. This is a chance to bring more support to the traders who provide a vital service to the town centre.

The council will focus support on businesses recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic and include one-off grants available under the Omicron Hospitality & Leisure Grants Scheme (OHLG) to support hospitality, leisure and accommodation businesses facing further difficulties related to the current variant. To be eligible, businesses must have been trading on 30 December 2021. To check if your business is eligible please visit www.gov.uk/guidance/ check-if-youre-eligible-for-the-omicronhospitality-and-leisure-grant.

Leader of the Council Jeremy Kite MBE said: “Throughout this pandemic, we’ve been providing various support grants for businesses to make sure they can weather this difficult time. I have been humbled by some of the comments we have received for our support, but managing the recovery is every bit as important as managing the crisis. “We are starting 2022 on a cautious, but brighter note in relation to Covid and it is time to move ahead with the town’s recovery. We’re encouraging all eligible businesses to get in touch with us to see what support we can provide. We want these grants to offer a big boost to communities, direct support to small businesses and also help our market traders.”

Dartford Borough Council has also taken the decision to welcome applications from a wide range of sectors including hospitality, leisure, accommodation, personal care and tourism that do not qualify for OHLG but have been severely affected by Omicron. When it comes to martial arts, karate is a great way to not only develop self-defence skills, but also to boost confidence, improve concentration, promote respect and lead to a healthier lifestyle. Perhaps this is why Dartfordbased Yamato Damashii Karate Club is so popular! There were a large number of beginners but the most senior child to pass on the day was Luke, who is now a 1st kyu brown belt, just one level from black belt and Lucy was the most senior adult, achieving Shodan (1st dan) black belt. by Harden Holidays After another roller-coaster of a December, it really feels like travel has returned this January. We’ve had a constant stream of enquiries coming in and it’s kept us really busy. However, after two years of being busy with cancellations and amendments, it’s been wonderful to be busy with organising new travel arrangements – so please keep it coming Dartford! This month we’re focusing on the new ship from our friends at Celebrity Cruises that will be launching later this year – Celebrity Beyond. Welcome to a place where you can escape and experience all the things you’ve been missing for so long. Only now, those things are even better than you’ve imagined. This is a place where the everyday gives way to the extraordinary. A place with more space to lose yourself in and more luxury to love. Where the possibilities are as endless as the views. Where you can disconnect entirely while you reconnect with each other—and the world. This place is Celebrity Beyond. The third ship in Celebrity Cruises’ revolutionary Edge® Series, Celebrity Beyond takes the innovative outward- facing design further than ever, creating an even closer connection between you, the sea, and every exciting place on the horizon. Soak up the sun, salt breezes, and stunning scenery in newly expanded open-air spaces. Savor fine dining that rivals anything you’d find on land. And discover even more ways to relax and renew. To ensure Celebrity Beyond would live up to its name, they have not only reunited the dream team of architects and designers who first envisioned the Edge Series, but they have expanded their roles— and their designs will expand the way travel inspires you. They have also stretched the length of the ship to create more even more room for incredible outdoor spaces, like the new terraced Sunset Bar imagined by world-famous designer Nate Berkus and a redesigned Rooftop Garden by the visionary Kelly Hoppen, CBE, that brings you closer than ever to the water’s edge—both in collaboration with celebrated architect Tom Wright of WKK. Kelly also took The Retreat Sundeck to a luxurious new level in more ways than one. 20

And they have introduced even more delicious culinary experiences to the collection, including a new restaurant by the world-renowned chef Daniel Boulud. All this is just the beginning of how Celebrity Beyond will redefine the art of luxury travel again, like each of the Edge Series ships has done before. Isn’t it time for the holiday you deserve? This means that we are free to organise the most suitable holiday for you, without any head office targets or influence. We are not tied to any brand or company, we have access to a massive array or travel providers, airlines, hotels and cruise lines. Instead of working for them, you’ll find that we work for you. We have price parity with all our suppliers, which means you would pay the same if you booked direct, however by booking through us you have the added benefit of our service and support. Just ask for a quote, if you don’t ask – you don’t know.

EXPERTISE - We organise a lot of holidays and have done so for years. Each of us plan around 50 holidays per month, most people will not organise that many in a decade…and we do that month after month. We also attend training events, follow industry news, and have excellent relationships PROTECTION - Everything we book for you is with our suppliers. We do everything we can to protected by the CAA and the TTA, but also you make your holidays better than ever.

Local performer/producer Gavin has just taken over the hit theatre show Be Bop a Lula with the company GSM Productions LTD. The show is on at the Orchard Theatre on July 10th. Gavin is a local resident living in Dartford, but originally hails from another great Music town... Liverpool. He says, “ it’s great to know that here in Dartford I’m surrounded by a fantastic musical heritage. I feel that it really should be celebrated. I found out recently that one of the legends featured in our show, Gene Vincent was actually married in Dartford in 1962!. There really should be a music museum here.” Gavin’s show Be Bop a Lula features four icons of Rock and Roll... Eddie Cochran, Gene Vincent, Buddy Holly and Billy Fury and it is now into it’s eighth successful year having played the Ambassador’s Theatre in the West End and and I’ll have lots of family’s and friends along consistently touring the UK. on July 10th. Picture the scene… England are set 271 runs to win on the third day of the fifth Test, where we reach 68-0. With an opening pair who, at long last, looked established at the crease, that glimmer of hope started to shine a little more brightly. Here was an opportunity for the team to end the series with some dignity, prove some doubters wrong, and head home without having to keep their heads down for long. But then they gave us something to laugh that… they lost all 10 wickets for just 56 more runs. The Test was over inside three days, the series lost 4-0. It was one of the worst collapses of all time. But as an indication of their spell of recent collapses, it is the fifth time in four years England have lost all 10 wickets for less than 65. I’ve had enough. Things really have to change. www.dartfordbusinessdirectory.co.uk

DARTFORD GIVING GIRLGUIDING VOLUNTEER If you want to volunteer with the next generation, but January’s article about being a school governor didn’t convince you to get involved that way, how about helping out with Girlguiding instead? This month I’ve talked to Carolyn who leads Rainbows in West Dartford to find out how you can help. Girlguiding volunteer “What is it?” Each week in the Dartford division, almost 400 members aged from four to 18 meet up in their units, to undertake various activities and challenges, form friendships and have fun learning together, earning skills badges as they go. There are currently over 100 eligible girls on the waiting list in the Dartford division, but sadly they cannot join due to the lack of volunteers, so your assistance really is needed. As a volunteer, you would help facilitate the weekly sessions, by helping to lead and getting involved in the various activities that the girls undertake.

In addition, there are often other events throughout the year which you may wish to attend, such as meet-ups with all districts and camps at weekends or in school holidays. “Are there any requirements?” Volunteers must be over 18 and both male and female volunteers are encouraged. Two personal references will be checked, followed by a DBS check, and you will be required to undertake an online safeguarding training session. You will be wellsupported throughout the onboarding process and when you are helping out.

“Anything else I need to know?” There seems to be a preconception that Scouts undertake outdoor adventurous activities and Girlguiding is limited to arts and crafts, but this is definitely not the case – Girlguiding covers it all. “Would I enjoy it?” Although Scouts may be Girlguiding is an all-inclusive organisation so all more publicised, they definitely don’t have abilities, cultures, experience and interests are all the fun – the range of activities covered in very welcome. big bold ‘in yer face’ statements, and it matters not a jot if I exceed my chosen timescale in achieving them.

It was actions of others that helped so much. I comfort eat, which solved nothing, as the number of cakes and biscuits I devoured never lifted my mood. Instead, I embarrassed myself by grizzling at a slimming club meeting, upon realising I only had myself to blame for a large weight gain. Those lovely people gathered round, offered hugs, advice, and such kind words I knew I could carry on.

Mental health, wellbeing, call it what you will is a strange beast. So many of us have noticed the effects of the past couple of years on ourselves, friends, and family. We are advised to seek help at a time when the NHS is unable to cope – private counselling isn’t cheap, and for many of us anti-depressants become a way of life. The biggest setback is that although you may realise you are anxious and depressed, the challenge to seek help is sometimes so much effort. We can all benefit each other in this predicament, simply by a kind word or gesture, or a friendly action

This is just the mundane, everyday stuff many of us take for granted, but it was the prescription I needed. Now I’m more positive. I’ve started a tai chi class, got my Christmas weight gain under control, with the help and support of that wonderful group of people at my slimming group. I’ve cleared out old clothes, books, and papers. I’m going through old photos and binning a few that hold no meaning or memory for me. A sort of mental and physical declutter.

I suppose this is a sort of love letter to those who helped me, whether they know it or not. It was the comments on local group pages, phone calls from far away, a friendly chat with a neighbour, and a cheerful good morning from some of the many dog walkers who come past my house which put things into perspective for me.

I have chosen some small goals rather than

WALKING WITH THE DARTS by Chris Palmer,

Mens team photos by Carol White-Griffiths, Womens` Taur Everard

Hello again, welcome to Walking With The Darts, ourselves from this disgusting behaviour. a monthly update on all things related to Dartford FC, courtesy of Dartford Living Magazine. “Such events come under the category of a ‘Hate Crime’ and where necessary and proven, will be dealt with in the strongest possible manner by both the authorities and particularly by us, the Club. “Such behaviour is not welcome and must stop” Having witnessed such homophobic comments towards a friend on social media recently, of which I reported, I absolutely stand firmly behind Steve Irving and everyone at the football club. This is an issue that is escalating in our football communities, and drastic action must be taken to prevent it from continuing.

As the opening days of the new year are upon us, let me just take the opportunity to wish you dear readers a Happy and Prosperous New Year. I raise a glass to you all and hope that 2022 brings peace, happiness and nothing but good things for you all.

Another issue that must be addressed in this article is the increasing attacks on the team and players across social media which, again, I have witnessed. It’s no secret that Dartford FC is struggling with recent results, the table doesn’t lie. However, the results aren’t always a reflection of the action on the pitch. Football is a funny old game, always has been always will be. Nobody knows this better than manager Steve King and his players, who are working extraordinarily hard to get the winning run back on the rails. I’d like to point out that Steve King urged supporters not to get carried away at the beginning of the season, stating that the season is a marathon, not a sprint, and that there are a lot of clubs in the National League South who have very strong squads this season.

Talking about peace, happiness and good things, there appears to be an escalating issue of mindless hatred towards the club (and others) from a minority of people on social media and within the crowd at recent games. I’d like to start off by sharing the following message from Steve Irving, Co-Chairman of Dartford FC, who spoke on behalf of the Board of Directors: We all understand how frustrating football can be at times, however, derogatory remarks “A note to supporters: Following recent incidents such as “bottlers”, etc…, are unacceptable. The of homophobic postings on social media and true supporters who I see each matchday are reports of homophobic chanting recently towards behind the players 100% and that’s how it should an opposition player, we absolutely distance be. Therefore, I urge anybody who witnesses

Meanwhile, the Dartford Women’s team began their defence of the same trophy by hosting Aylesford FC today (Sunday 16th January) in a game which saw the Darts progress to the final again with a dominant 8-1 victory. Connor Dymond’s side now face Gillingham Women FC in the final. such comments to respond by defending and encouraging our players. Let’s all be gentle with our words towards each other, showing kindness and understanding.

Ironically, the women opened their new year with a thumping 7-1 victory against Aylesford FC last weekend in Chatham, where they raced into a 3-0 lead within four minutes! An impressive start to the year indeed by Connor Dymond’s team. As his side remains at the top of the London & South East Regional Women’s League table, having earned 26 points after 13 games, the ladies can’t wait for what could prove to be their biggest game of the season, where they’ll host undefeated Ashford Middlesex WFC on the 30th of January.

Whilst on the subject of players, Dartford FC recently said goodbye to Craig KIng and Emmanuel Sonupe, who have moved on to Hemel Hempstead and the USA respectively. However, we welcomed Frenchman Kalvin Kalala to the club, who has started his first three games for the Darts. The lively winger/forward is still finding his feet at By Chris Palmer the club, but will surely be an excellent addition to the dressing room, as will latest addition Kai Woollard-Innocent. The young left-back has arrived on loan from Championship outfit QPR. At the time of writing, the Darts sit in fifth position in the National League South table, and are still in contention in such a competitive league having registered nine wins and six draws in nineteen games. The club had a break from league action yesterday (Saturday 15th January), having entertained and beaten Weymouth in the fourth round of the Buildbase FA Trophy at Bericote Powerhouse Princes Park. The game saw goalkeeper Dan Wilks in excellent form and midfielder Jack Jebb score another one of his specials. Having won the delayed 2019/20 Kent Senior Cup earlier in the season, the club will start its defence of the trophy in this season’s competition by hosting Dover Athletic at Bericote Powerhouse Princes

to teach her first 60 hour British Wheel of Yoga Foundation course, and she invited me to join.

MAKING YOGA A PART OF YOUR LIFE By Clair Yates

The foundation course changed my life. Being part of a group of like-minded students, meeting regularly and going deeper into the teachings of yoga, the philosophy, the history, taking time to cultivate a regular physical yoga practice, progressing our confidence to create our own sequences and to try different postures and practices, developing our ability to reflect on how we respond to life with its inherent challenges, all over the course of 10 months, contributed to a real change in how I feel and connect to life. If you’re reading this and you can relate to the feeling of wanting to know more about yoga than the average class can teach, to the feeling of wanting to make yoga part of your life, I recommend taking some kind of yoga course where you will be part of a group meeting together over a period of time. There’s an energy in being with like-minded people and an accountability in being part of a group that meets regularly and time to build an awareness and absorb the teachings in a way that really can make yoga part of your life.

The past two years has led many to make changes, to prioritise their mental and physical health in a way they hadn’t before. As part of these changes lots of people have taken up yoga or returned the practice in a more committed way. I’ve seen in my own classes - and have heard from other yoga teachers that they are finding this too - class participants seem to be appreciating the benefits of yoga on a deeper level than before the pandemic. For some attending a class once or twice a week is enough, for others the changes they feel after a yoga class lead them wanting to know more, to start to want to make yoga and the teachings of yoga part of their life.

I’m excited to be planning to teach the foundation course myself this year, knowing I’ll get to go deeper into the teachings with those who are interested and share my love for yoga. I’ll get to watch others life-changing experiences which is a real joy. There will be foundation courses starting with various teachers in this area throughout 2022, so if you are interested in making this year the year you make yoga part of your life, let me know and I can point you in the right direction. Wishing you a deeper connection to yourself in this new year. Keep taking good care of yourself, Clair.

clair.crestyoga@gmail.com

This is how I felt back in 2007. Though I had dabbled with yoga for many years, in 2004, suffering with a bad back, I’d started to attend yoga classes in earnest. My back soon improved but that’s not why I became hooked, though I couldn’t put my finger on it, I began to feel happier and more comfortable living in my own body and I wanted to know more. I’d been attending 3-4 classes each week but this still didn’t feel like enough, because in reality there is only so much yoga you can learn in a class environment. Fortunately one of my teachers, Mohini Chatlani was about 32

SENIOR SNIPPETS By Christina Uppenkamp - Home Instead

Welcome to the latest edition of Senior Snippets: the monthly advisory column with the older members of our community in mind, brought to you by Christina Uppenkamp of Home Instead Dartford. As we age we often experience normal changes in our sleeping patterns, such as becoming sleepy earlier, waking up earlier, or enjoying less deep sleep. Sleep is just as important to our physical and emotional health as it was when we were younger. These tips can help you overcome age-related sleep problems and get a good night’s rest. Maintain a consistent sleep schedule. Go to bed and wake up at the same times every day, even on weekends. Keep busy. Social activities, seeing the family, volunteering or learning something new can all help exercise the mind and tire it out for the night. Don’t watch TV or look at a tablet or computer for an hour before bedtime. Doing these activities can suppress melatonin levels and affect subsequent sleep. Use diet and exercise to improve sleep. Two of the daytime habits that most affect sleep are diet and exercise. As well as eating a healthy diet during the day, it’s particularly important to watch what you put in your body in the hours before bedtime.

Get out into the sunshine. Sunshine regulates melatonin levels and hence affects sleep cycles. Try to get outside for a little while every day. When at home, open the curtains during the day and move your chair into a sunny spot of the room. It is important to remember that just because you are sleeping less, it doesn’t necessarily mean you have sleep ‘problems’. However, if you are not sleeping well, having to get up frequently at night, or not waking up feeling refreshed, consider visiting the doctor for more advice and information. To make a suggestion for a future topic, please write to me at c.uppenkamp@dartford.homeinstead. co.uk or by post to Home Instead Dartford, St Fidelis House, St Fidelis Road, Erith, DA8 1AT. Alternatively, you can also call me on 01322923750.

Develop soothing bedtime rituals. Taking a bath, playing music, or practicing a relaxation technique such as meditation or deep breathing can help you wind down. Limit caffeine late in the day. Avoid caffeine (from coffee, tea, soda, and chocolate) late in the day. Minimize liquid intake before sleep. Limit what you drink within the hour and a half before bedtime. www.dartfordbusinessdirectory.co.uk

Is that you? Or are you still going strong? Don’t feel bad if you’ve come unstuck already. Making changes to your diet and lifestyle are hard. It takes time to get used to new things, and it’s difficult to give up or change old habits. The key now, is to get right back on it. Whether you lasted a few days, or the whole month and then stopped, start it right back up again. However… Review what you were doing first.

You can always up the game a bit later on once you’ve got used to your new routine if you’re unhappy with the results you’re getting. It’s always worth getting guidance on what to do to take the guesswork out of it and minimise the chance of failure. A good coach will be able to review your starting point and set you targets based on what’s achievable, and then build on that as you go.

FOCUS ON MENTAL HEALTH By Dr Julie Taylor The winter months can be more difficult for our mental health. The colder, shorter days can make us want to sleep and eat more, and impacts on our motivation to exercise or socialise with friends, despite the resolutions we may have made. In addition, the impact of COVID on our mental health has been significant. We have been socially isolated for long periods, there has been uncertainty about what we can and cannot do and uncertainty is often very stressful. We may have been ill ourselves. Many people will have lost loved ones during this period and may feel that they weren’t able to be there or grieve properly.

quite distressing for some. Try not to ruminate on the ‘what ifs’ and negative stories. Some people find mindfulness helps them to focus on the present and manage their thoughts and feelings. There are mindfulness course and self-help guides that you can access. For some exercises and tips https://www.mind.org.uk/informationsupport/drugs-and-treatments/mindfulness/ mindfulness-exercises-tips/

Staying motivated Try to keep motivated and do what you can to boost your morale. Doing something that gives you energy can help to boost your mood. This might be exercise, a new challenge or project – anything you enjoy. Planning your day each morning can give you small goals to aim for, create a routine and keep you productive.

If you need help with your mental health, there’s lots of support out there, from your GP surgery to organisations such as Mind and Mental Health Matters. You can self-refer to NHS talking therapies without speaking to your GP at https://www. nhs.uk/service-search/mental-health/find-apsychological-therapies-service/

Be kind One thing the last few years have taught us is the importance of kindness and compassion. Being kind to others, such as helping out in your community, can improve your mental health. Even something as simple as giving up your seat on the bus, making a colleague a cup of tea or praising someone when they have done something good can increase your own feelings of happiness and satisfaction. Try a simple act of kindness and see how it makes you feel. Kindness needs to start with yourself. Celebrate small achievements, even if that it just in your head. Book some time off of work, go for a walk or run alone or even shutting the bathroom door for a bath/shower away from the kids to give yourself some valuable ‘me time’. Don’t worry Uncertainty around the COVID pandemic can be 38

Feeling overwhelmed? When things are overwhelming – stop and take time to find your feet and think about the next step. One step at a time and you will soon have walked further than you imagined. Try to avoid coping mechanisms that are not helpful in the long term, such as smoking, drinking and over eating. Reach out early if you are struggling; especially with things like debt, finances and your mental health.

If it is urgent and you cannot wait to speak to your GP, contact the Samaritans on 116 123, call 111, or you can call the 24 hour helpline on 0800 783 9111 (Kent and Medway residents). Check https://www.kmpt.nhs.uk/need-help/ for more information.

Recently we have learnt to value our green spaces more than ever. In this fascinating, inspirational, and educational show, Ray will be demonstrating and explaining techniques that will help us improve our senses and highlight the problems nature faces today. Talking about the show, Ray said “Together with the audience we will go on a voyage of discovery of our senses. But it won’t be limited to just that – we will be talking a lot about more – how we can read a landscape, the kind of equipment that we can use to ‘supercharge’ our senses, and how we can use these skills, not only for our own enjoyment and benefit but also to protect wildlife which is such an integral part of the British countryside.” Come and celebrate the importance of the Wilderness to us all on Friday 11 March. Multi award-winning comedian and actor Omid Djalili is back where he belongs, on a stage and bringing back the Good Times. What to do:

EASY ‘NO-BAKE’ INDIVIDUAL CHEESECAKES WITH FRUIT COULIS. By Debbie Dickinson This easy recipe is quick to make and absolutely delicious. I’ve suggested making individual desserts but, of course, you can make a large cheesecake instead/ How about topping the cheesecakes with crushed chocolate bars instead of the fruit coulis. What you need: 150g Biscuits – Digestives are traditional and perfect for the base but try your favourites! 75g Unsalted Butter 200g Soft Cheese 25g Icing Sugar 1tsp Vanilla Extract 80ml Double Cream For the Coulis 200g Frozen Berries 50g Sugar 100ml Water 48

Put the Biscuits into a food/sandwich bag and crush into crumbs. Gently heat the Butter in a saucepan until melted, take off the heat and add the crushed biscuits. Stir until well combined. Divide the mix between 4 glasses or small bowls. Refrigerate while you make the cheesecake mix. Put the Soft Cheese, Icing Sugar and Vanilla Extract in a large bowl and whisk until smooth. Add the Double Cream and whisk again until quite thick. Spoon onto the biscuit bases and refrigerate again. To make the Coulis, put the Frozen Berries, Sugar and Water into a saucepan. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer gently for a few minutes. Take care the pan doesn’t boil dry. Allow the Coulis to cool, then spoon onto the individual cheesecakes. Refrigerate again until required. Enjoy!
