Then, we had The Lightning Seeds, what can I say? Blew my socks off, well, metaphorically as I was wearing sandals but…They looked happy to be there, everyone in the audience was definitely happy to be there, and you could feel it in the air. The Lightning Seeds rocked it and you could see that everyone watching it did too. I found my new friends again (“Jo, it’s you again! This is a brilliant festival!”) and danced my old Indie-Girl socks off. I don’t think I have grinned so much in years. The festival itself was well-planned, accessible and relaxed. We had a minor emergency near the end of Saturday early-evening when my husband decided to decamp with our daughter without telling us. The security team were brilliant, patient and utterly in control. We did find them in the fair and he got a fair telling off, but the team kept me calm and knew what they were doing, they were amazing. So after the minor scare and a fantastic day we headed home. I woke up the next day already excited about watching Who Are You UK later. They didn’t disappoint, absolutely fantastic. It was like watching The Who circa 1987 (I imagine, I was only 11 then!). The atmosphere at Central Park was the same as the day before, relaxed, in-control and had the hint of great things to come in the air. It didn’t disappoint. I was back at the front, again, the audience were living and loving it, the band were loving it, and my Well, what can I say? My college and university days came back to me in an amazing happy boom. When I first received the press release about The Farm and The Lightning Seeds headlining at the Dartford Festival, I bored my husband senseless with their songs and my memories. They didn’t disappoint! We got there early to make sure we had a good place, which was pointless really because as soon as The Farm began I was off down the front on my own and met some great people. The mood was fantastic, the band were fantastic, everything was fantastic. Nostalgia ten-fold and then some. The Farm completely embraced the atmosphere and seemed to enjoy it as much as the audience, which was a massive age-range – children on shoulders, women on shoulders, men on shoulders (I may have imagined that bit). Everyone with massive smiles on their faces and completely embracing the moment.

Sometimes you need a bit of brilliant entertainment to remember who you really are and what you enjoy. The Dartford Festival gave that to me in abundance this year, and for that, I thank you…There are loads of other bands that I haven’t had the time to mention, and the Community Stage is something for us Dartfordians to be proud of, so much great local talent, so much support and so much fun! Everyone excelled themselves this year. Well done Dartford, hats off to every single band and talent that perfomed this weekend. My mouth is still hurting from the grinning and I am so proud of our town. Outstanding. It’s coming home, it’s coming home…

Unfortunately, I had to go soon after watching Who Are You UK as I was off to see Sing-a-long-a Bohemian Rhapsody at The Orchard Theatre that evening (whole other fantastic story).

Football today can be a brutal industry. The shelf-life of managers and players is shorter than ever before in the current results-based culture we find ourselves in. Dip down the leagues and you’ll see a recurring theme; longevity. Clubs, particularly at non-league level, are perhaps more forgiving than others, largely due to the fact they don’t have the finances to partake in the endless merry-go-round of staff and players as the likes of Chelsea have ridden in recent years.

You’ve got to love what you do but also you’ve got to love the football club that you’re working for.” One thing that has never dwindled throughout the years of applying muscle tape and deep heat is his love of the club. “It’s a very community-orientated club here and many who work in the backroom do it because they love the football club and want to give something back to the area. I’m very proud of being a small part of the history of this club,” he added.

We haven’t got anywhere near what they would in the higher leagues.” “The biggest aid you’ve got is your hands, the injuries and bodies haven’t changed” “When we have an injured player we can’t always afford to send away for a scan, for example, so often we self-diagnose,” he went onto say. “In the Premier League they’d be sent straight for an MRI or CT scan

I’ll still do nearly every home game and some away. I’m always mysteriously busy for Torquay or Truro away though!”

PEPPA PIG HEAVEN... I’M NOT TELLING PORKIES! by Annabelle Jain

of the park and in addition to this there are birds, animals and beautiful gardens to see. There is so much to see that I would look at staying and taking advantage of their two day ticket as my kids loved Peppa Pig World so much we spent the whole day there! We haven’t heard the end of meeting the ‘real Peppa, George, Mummy Pig and Daddy Pig’ something you can’t necessarily guarantee elsewhere.

Under 2 hours from Dartford is Paultons Park - Home of Peppa Pig World. If you are looking for a great family theme park day out for the whole family this summer, then Paultons Park really offers something for everyone (especially young Peppa Pig fans). I took my own Peppa Pig fans to have a look and they were not disappointed in the least. The rides in Peppa Pig world are perfect for younger visitors varying from a relaxing ride on Grandad Pig’s train to the slightly more daring Miss Rabbits balloon ride. If your children don’t seem like the biggest fan of rides there is still plenty to do with a brilliant soft play, park and muddy puddle splash area. In fact, remember your kids’ swimming stuff and probably a change of clothes as my son managed to drench himself from head to toe.

If you decide to visit Peppa Pig World I can recommend first thing in the morning or towards park closing time for quieter times of day as we noticed the queues were much shorter then. Another positive for me was that there were plenty of places to eat with a number of quick bite counters throughout the park which included an array of items for all dietary requirements including vegan and gluten free as well as a number of sit down cafes and picnic areas. Paultons Park is actually one of my favourite theme parks and I would prefer to go there than a lot of others. I always find it clean, well-cared for and maintained and the staff are always friendly and helpful and I can honestly highly recommend it for a great family day out. Most rides in Peppa Pig world will allow riders from 12 months old on with an adult and even elsewhere in the park there are plenty of rides suitable for visitors under one metre. Congestion and pollution in Dartford town centre, can only increase as result of the loss of the 492, and that’s bad news for all Dartford residents.

The 492 serves all stops between Dartford & Bluewater tfl.gov.uk/buses/96-428-492/ (via London Road), and it links to Crayford, Bexleyheath, Sidcup. It is the ONLY bus which travels across Dartford Please give TfL your views by completing the online survey from East to West without the need to change buses. below by: Tuesday 10 September 2019. It’s fantastic for both mums to be and parents of children of all ages. It’s a designer clothes shop called Ragleys and it sells new and preloved designer clothing for a fraction of the price of branded retailers. It’s like a little Aladdin’s Cave! Not only that, Ragleys is owned by fellow mum, Carly Slipper, who set up the business whilst raising her 2 boys by herself. She has just celebrated her 1 year anniversary in her shop, situated just outside of Barnehurst train station, so when you buy something, you know it’s helping to support a local mum in business. What’s even more of a bonus, Ragleys will also sell your old clothes for you too, so any branded clothes that your little ones may have grown out of, you can take to the shop and earn a little bit of cash. Carly has already sold some items for me within a few days and I’ve since used the money to put towards the baby. LIFE UNDER THE STAIRS by Local Resident, Jane Stevenson THE FATE OF THE FETE What has happened to the local fetes? Following on from reports of police intervention at the recent Stone Fete and murmurs that the Dartford Festival only really caters for music fans and high-end car salesmen I’m sad that such a British tradition seems to have died a death. Has it really become so much more corporate and expensive to run? I freely admit to seeing this whole question through rose coloured spectacles. I love a good fete, where I can play tombola games, rifle though bric a brac, books and puzzles, and enjoy homemade cakes and a strong brew. I can also remember the Dartford Show of years ago which seemed to offer so much more in the way of community involvement. Having said that, I haven’t been for a number of years, simply because I felt it was moving away from that whole idea. I seem to recall there used to be a parade of floats through the town, advertising local business, uniformed groups and social activities. I’m guessing it doesn’t happen anymore.

I could never have afforded in the early 1990s. OH and I recently took ourselves off to a well known chain for a quiet, late lunch. I should have guessed something was up when the car park was full on a Tuesday at 1.30pm. We parked and entered. I was amazed at the number of children present. We were seated next to a couple of women, both with small toddlers and got talking to them. This was a regular event for them, as both worked in the evenings and with school age children as well, a social meet up wasn’t always easy. The restaurant provided a cheap and nutritious lunchtime menu and children’s portions – and they could have a couple of hours to themselves before the school run. Times have changed indeed – and for the better. I’m all for eating out with youngsters. It introduces them social skills, manners, offers the challenge of trying a new food and helps establish a degree of independence. It is a chance for them to observe mum, chatting and relaxed with friends, away from the routine of home. It has become the norm. It’s another form of learning.

Nowadays, the nearest I get to a traditional fete is watching TEACH YOUR CHILDREN WELL …. VANILLA COOKIES

I love making cookies and these are a perfect activity to do with the kids over the holidays. Use any cookie cutters to make whatever shapes and designs you want. You will need: 200g block butter (at room temp) 200g caster sugar 1tsp vanilla extract 1 egg (beaten) 400g plain flour What to do: Cream the butter, sugar and vanilla extract together until smooth, pale and creamy. Add half of the egg, together with a spoonful of the flour, mix well, then scrape down the sides of the bowl. Add the rest of the egg, with another spoonful of flour and mix well again. Scrape down the sides of the bowl and add the rest of the flour. Mix well until all the flour is combined (but don’t mix for longer than necessary as will make for tougher cookies) I usually pop the mix into the fridge for about an hour now to make the dough a bit firmer and, therefore, easier to roll out.

Working with half of the dough at a time, place it between 2 sheets of greaseproof baking paper and roll out to a thickness of about 5-6mm. Cut out shapes and carefully put them onto a baking tray lined with another sheet of greaseproof baking paper. Repeat for other half of dough. Chill in the fridge, again, for about an hour to firm up. Bake at 180° (160° Fan) for about 8-10 minutes or until the edges start to go a golden-brown colour. Take out of the oven and put to one side to cool. Wash up the cookie cutters and use them to cut out rolled sugar paste. I usually turn the cookies over (to work on a flat surface) and brush some cooled boiled water/ warmed up jam on the cookie to stick the sugar paste. Use edible pens (available in most supermarkets now) or icing tubes to draw details on the cookies. Or cut out smaller sugar paste shapes as decoration. Enjoy!

Bromley Barbershop Harmony Club (The Kentones) Seeks a Musical Director The Club is a chorus of 45 men and is a registered Charity with the stated aim of encouraging men to take up singing, and to develop their skill in the craft of four part unaccompanied close harmony in the Barbershop style. DARTFORD ARTS NETWORK TO HOLD ART AUCTION AT LIONS COMMUNITY FAYRE ON 1ST SEPTEMBER

On 1st September Dartford Arts Network (DAN) will be part of the Lions’ Community Fayre taking place on 1st holding an auction event to sell the art works produced September 10am - 4pm. for the Dartford Assembly project in 2016 and displayed until recently on the Lowfield Street hoardings. You can place a bid in advance by emailing us at hello@ dartfordartsnetwork.com with ‘Auction Bid’ as the subject and stating your name, bid amount and the title of the work you wish to bid on. A gallery of works available for auction can be seen on our website. If you make a bid via email, we strongly recommend that you still come along to the live event taking place at 2.15pm on One Bell Corner, Dartford High Street as it’s possible you might be outbid on the day! The Dartford Assembly project was the first of its kind in the town with original art works on boards produced following a public call-out for artists, as well as collages from community workshops and local school and college contributions. The high quality of work meant that the public reaction was overwhelmingly positive and the project’s aim - to bring more public art to the town, as well as to enhance the streetscape of the area - was more than fulfilled. Dartford Borough Council were our partners throughout the project, with generous financial support, and in negotiations with the landowner. With the subsequent progression of works on the Lowfield Street site, the hoardings have now been replaced and the artworks removed with great care by Bellway’s groundworks team.

As well as the original artwork boards (1.2m x 1.2m) we will be holding a Secret Postcard Art Sale - postcards of original artwork will be up for sale, with the artists remaining anonymous until point of sale - there may even be some famous names in there up for grabs! The net proceeds of the sales will be donated to the Lions’ chosen charity - Ellenor Hospice (minus minimal project expenses). We are very grateful to all the local artists who have agreed for their original works to be sold for this cause. The Lions’ Community Fayre is on 1st Sep 2019 on Dartford High Street. The DAN auction will take place at 2.15pm on One Bell Corner.

The day is, as far as we know, completely unique in that every student and staff member takes part in the day. It is designed not only to help those placements we go to but also try to make sure students are out of their comfort zone. Learning is not always about textbooks! At DSTC we aim for all students to be well-rounded individuals. As always we had a VIP who toured many of the placements, this year it was Ann Allen, MBE who is, amongst many other things, Chair of KCC. None of this would be possible without our sponsors. BAV’S SPORTING COMMENT There will never be another finish to a Cricket Men’s World Cup final like that. For England to win it, in front of a full house at Lord’s in that incredible atmosphere, with a massive audience on TV, radio and online, could not have been any better. If that doesn’t show people what an amazing sport cricket is and seduce them to get into the game, I’m not sure what will. It was the most peculiar game of cricket, tied twice. You can debate the fairness of winning on the amount of boundaries scored, and you have to have some sympathy for New Zealand. How would we feel about that system if England had lost? Everything that was wanted to be achieved was achieved, and so much more on top. Now cricket has an amazing platform from which to build. FITNESS TACKLING PROBLEM AREAS

I see so many people going to the gym and doing “a workout”, possibly one they’ve made up, possibly one they’ve found on the internet or in a magazine, possibly one written for them by a fitness trainer, or possibly even one guided by a Personal Trainer, yet I’d guess at least half of them (probably more) are doing the wrong things based on their goals.

You see, whilst for a completely untrained individual just getting into working out, almost anything will be beneficial - get used to the machines, get used to different exercises, just play around a bit and find what you enjoy doing the most (or hate the least); but there are many different methods of training, each suited to slightly different outcomes.

At this intensity you’ll be using different energy systems so fat-burning during your workout will be less profound, but the increased growth hormone output will create an environment more conducive to burning extra calories for the next 24-48 hours. You’ll also be working the muscles harder, again preserving muscle tissue and encouraging your body to break down fats instead of muscle for fuel.

The Orchard Theatre is getting a makeover this summer, which will see it reopen with new seats, updated tech equipment, improved accessibility and increased capacity. That means we’ll have to look elsewhere to get our theatre fix in August, before the theatre reopens in style with some fantastic shows in September.

Top tips for the school term ahead Getting children ready for their first day back at school can come with lots of challenges. The retail sector’s massive marketing campaigns, with shops full of ‘back to school’ merchandise, try to make us feel we have to buy everything new – but that’s not necessarily the case. And the new school year challenges aren’t just financial. Here are some tips to make preparing a little easier. Are new uniforms necessary? There’s an expectation that each child needs a new uniform, sports kit and school bag ready for the first day back. However, it pays to be realistic – does your child really need all new stuff? Could their shoes from last term be worn for a little longer? If money is tight it makes sense to make everything last that bit longer. Only buy new if needed! If you do need to hit the shops, be firm with yourself and ask, ‘What do the kids really need?’ Cut your list down as much as possible and only buy what’s absolutely necessary. Most supermarkets have basics such as polo shirts, trousers and dresses at budget prices. Keep an eye out for offers and any chances to get your hands on free or reduced cost uniform – some schools pass on donated uniform or there may be clothes swaps. Don’t forget to check the charity shops too! Do you and your child know what to expect on the first day at school? If your child is starting school for the first time in Reception or Year 1, it helps if you can discuss the routine with them so they know what to expect. You may find little ones get very tired as they adjust to a lot of changes. You could try arranging little treats for them such as their favourite food for lunch or tea so their first few days are associated with things they enjoy.
