DARTFORD FESTIVAL ROCKED THE PARK by Jo Clark (Local Resident), photos by Andy Barnes Photography

Then, we had The Lightning Seeds, what can I say? Blew my socks off, well, metaphorically as I was wearing sandals but…They looked happy to be there, everyone in the audience was definitely happy to be there, and you could feel it in the air. The Lightning Seeds rocked it and you could see that everyone watching it did too. I found my new friends again (“Jo, it’s you again! This is a brilliant festival!”) and danced my old Indie-Girl socks off. I don’t think I have grinned so much in years. The festival itself was well-planned, accessible and relaxed. We had a minor emergency near the end of Saturday early-evening when my husband decided to decamp with our daughter without telling us. The security team were brilliant, patient and utterly in control. We did find them in the fair and he got a fair telling off, but the team kept me calm and knew what they were doing, they were amazing. So after the minor scare and a fantastic day we headed home. I woke up the next day already excited about watching Who Are You UK later. They didn’t disappoint, absolutely fantastic. It was like watching The Who circa 1987 (I imagine, I was only 11 then!). The atmosphere at Central Park was the same as the day before, relaxed, in-control and had the hint of great things to come in the air. It didn’t disappoint. I was back at the front, again, the audience were living and loving it, the band were loving it, and my Well, what can I say? My college and university days came back to me in an amazing happy boom. When I first received the press release about The Farm and The Lightning Seeds headlining at the Dartford Festival, I bored my husband senseless with their songs and my memories. They didn’t disappoint! We got there early to make sure we had a good place, which was pointless really because as soon as The Farm began I was off down the front on my own and met some great people. The mood was fantastic, the band were fantastic, everything was fantastic. Nostalgia ten-fold and then some. The Farm completely embraced the atmosphere and seemed to enjoy it as much as the audience, which was a massive age-range – children on shoulders, women on shoulders, men on shoulders (I may have imagined that bit). Everyone with massive smiles on their faces and completely embracing the moment.

Sometimes you need a bit of brilliant entertainment to remember who you really are and what you enjoy. The Dartford Festival gave that to me in abundance this year, and for that, I thank you…There are loads of other bands that I haven’t had the time to mention, and the Community Stage is something for us Dartfordians to be proud of, so much great local talent, so much support and so much fun! Everyone excelled themselves this year. Well done Dartford, hats off to every single band and talent that perfomed this weekend. My mouth is still hurting from the grinning and I am so proud of our town. Outstanding. It’s coming home, it’s coming home…

mouth was still hurting from grinning so much from the day before. I talked to some great people, everyone wanted to be there and we were all so proud of the fact that The Dartford Festival is still going and free. Well done Dartford Council, you have earned a Brownie Badge this year. Unfortunately, I had to go soon after watching Who Are You UK as I was off to see Sing-a-long-a Bohemian Rhapsody at The Orchard Theatre that evening (whole other fantastic story).

DARTS’ MUSCLE MAN CELEBRATES 25 YEARS IN THE TREATMENT ROOM

by Henry Clark

Football today can be a brutal industry. The shelf-life of managers and players is shorter than ever before in the current results-based culture we find ourselves in. Dip down the leagues and you’ll see a recurring theme; longevity. Clubs, particularly at non-league level, are perhaps more forgiving than others, largely due to the fact they don’t have the finances to partake in the endless merry-go-round of staff and players as the likes of Chelsea have ridden in recent years.

for 25 years “I’ve done away games to Grimsby and Gateshead on a Tuesday night, getting back at three o’clock in the morning when we played in the Conference Premier (now the National League). You’ve got to love what you do but also you’ve got to love the football club that you’re working for.” One thing that has never dwindled throughout the years of applying muscle tape and deep heat is his love of the club. “It’s a very community-orientated club here and many who work in the backroom do it because they love the football club and want to give something back to the area. I’m very proud of being a small part of the history of this club,” he added.

Dave Phillips knows a thing or two about longevity. He is now into an unprecedented 25th year as part of the medical team at Dartford FC which is a world away from the glamorous lifestyle usually associated as part of life in the football industry. It is not uncommon for some of the big clubs to take to the skies for more than driveable distances for away games, a life Phillips would Football has changed immeasurably on and off the often dream of on a wet Tuesday night in Grimsby. pitch in the last few decades but the struggles of being a physio to semi-professional players remains Phillips has been on the sidelines with Dartford FC the same. Squads are smaller and time is limited, 8

making the physio’s job of getting players back on the pitch as soon as possible critical. “We only see them two or three times a week for a couple of hours which is difficult. Really, we want to be doing the full rehabilitation process but if you’ve only got a couple of days a week to do it it makes it harder and longer for the injury to recover.”

without any thought to it.” To the laymen it sounds like a tricky and frankly unenviable job. But whilst treatment options have continued to evolve, Phillips always remembers a comment by one of his former tutors when he attended night school at South Kent college to get his qualification, that has stuck with him to this day. “They always said that the biggest aid you’ve got is your hands. Even if you don’t have all the new technology at your disposal there’s more knowledge about human anatomy than when I started and the injuries and

Phillips was a part of Tony Burman’s (pictured) staff that most notably achieved an 8th place finish in the Conference Premier Phillips added, “We can’t say ‘I need to see you tomorrow’ because they’re working all day in the city, for instance. But you learn to adapt to the hours that you’ve got and to work on them in the most efficient ways that you can.” For many clubs at this level, financing a squad of players and staff is difficult enough without considering costs for medical equipment. For some of the ‘big’ clubs the outlay on apparatus is merely a drop in the ocean but, for Phillips and his team, the Darts’ supporters association provides a vital lifeline. “We are very lucky here because we have a very handson supporters association. We have got equipment like ultrasound machines and GPS trackers that a lot of clubs haven’t got. We haven’t got anywhere near what they would in the higher leagues.” “The biggest aid you’ve got is your hands, the injuries and bodies haven’t changed” “When we have an injured player we can’t always afford to send away for a scan, for example, so often we self-diagnose,” he went onto say. “In the Premier League they’d be sent straight for an MRI or CT scan

bodies haven’t changed. Phillips (R) has volunteered his time to local schools too, pictured here at a schools cricket festival “Our job as physios of using our knowledge to get players back on the pitch as quick as possible is still the same.” Even after all these years, it’s not clear Phillips is committed to hanging up his vinyl gloves anytime soon. “Every year, for the last ten years, I say to my wife ‘No, that’s the last year’. I am getting a lot older now days and with all the travelling it did get a bit too much and I told the club I was retired. But that only lasted for about three months – in the close season as well.” “I probably do as many hours now than ever – my wife says I do more now. I’ll still do nearly every home game and some away. I’m always mysteriously busy for Torquay or Truro away though!”

Useful Numbers

Have you ever wanted to order flowers for someone that does not live locally? Or ordered flowers online because you’ve remembered your anniversary is tomorrow and all the shops are closed? Did you use one of the big flower companies like Interflora? Or did you search the internet for a local independent florist close to where that person lives? If you have never searched for a local florist and still use a big company let me explain how you do. If for example you use Google in the search box type Florist near (the place you want to send flowers). This will bring up some sponsored ads first, ignore them scroll down the page until you find the map. This will list all the local florists in the area, most of which will have their own websites which you can order from or you can call them to discuss what you would like, they will be happy to help you. More and more people are bypassing the big companies and supporting small independent shops. As a result of this 18 months ago we took the leap and changed the name of our shop from St Albans Flowers Ltd to Dartford Florist Ltd. This was because as you can imagine we were having lots of orders and phone calls about delivering flowers to St Albans in Hertfordshire and although we do have a wide delivery area this is just a tad too far. We have had a website that you can order flowers online from for over 15 years now. Many of our customers are people who live abroad who love the ease of our website, the fact that they can see designs we have previously made and our reliable service.

Visit our website www.dartfordflorist.co.uk and use the code DL10 to receive 10% off the cost of your flowers until 30th September 2019. Delivery charges apply. Offer only available online.

PEPPA PIG HEAVEN... I’M NOT TELLING PORKIES! by Annabelle Jain

of the park and in addition to this there are birds, animals and beautiful gardens to see. There is so much to see that I would look at staying and taking advantage of their two day ticket as my kids loved Peppa Pig World so much we spent the whole day there! We haven’t heard the end of meeting the ‘real Peppa, George, Mummy Pig and Daddy Pig’ something you can’t necessarily guarantee elsewhere.

Under 2 hours from Dartford is Paultons Park - Home of Peppa Pig World. If you are looking for a great family theme park day out for the whole family this summer, then Paultons Park really offers something for everyone (especially young Peppa Pig fans). I took my own Peppa Pig fans to have a look and they were not disappointed in the least. The rides in Peppa Pig world are perfect for younger visitors varying from a relaxing ride on Grandad Pig’s train to the slightly more daring Miss Rabbits balloon ride. If your children don’t seem like the biggest fan of rides there is still plenty to do with a brilliant soft play, park and muddy puddle splash area. In fact, remember your kids’ swimming stuff and probably a change of clothes as my son managed to drench himself from head to toe.

If you decide to visit Peppa Pig World I can recommend first thing in the morning or towards park closing time for quieter times of day as we noticed the queues were much shorter then. Another positive for me was that there were plenty of places to eat with a number of quick bite counters throughout the park which included an array of items for all dietary requirements including vegan and gluten free as well as a number of sit down cafes and picnic areas. Paultons Park is actually one of my favourite theme parks and I would prefer to go there than a lot of others. I always find it clean, well-cared for and maintained and the staff are always friendly and helpful and I can honestly highly recommend it for a great family day out. For more information on opening times and ticket prices visit the Paultons Park website.

Most rides in Peppa Pig world will allow riders from 12 months old on with an adult and even elsewhere in the park there are plenty of rides suitable for visitors under one metre. If you are travelling with kids of all ages then whilst the younger ones enjoy Peppa Pig World the older ones can enjoy a wide variety of rides and rollercoasters in the rest

DEAR DARTFORD LIVING... I would like to make Dartford residents aware of the proposed bus route change in Dartford, the removal of the 492 bus route from Dartford to Bluewater, this will severely effect Dartford residents, and we need to act now to save the 492 bus route.

Follow my pregnancy journey on Instagram @BipBopMum I recently waddled my way into a lovely little shop this week and I thought I would share as it is a real local hidden gem. It’s fantastic for both mums to be and parents of children of all ages. It’s a designer clothes shop called Ragleys and it sells new and preloved designer clothing for a fraction of the price of branded retailers. It’s like a little Aladdin’s Cave! Not only that, Ragleys is owned by fellow mum, Carly Slipper, who set up the business whilst raising her 2 boys by herself. She has just celebrated her 1 year anniversary in her shop, situated just outside of Barnehurst train station, so when you buy something, you know it’s helping to support a local mum in business. What’s even more of a bonus, Ragleys will also sell your old clothes for you too, so any branded clothes that your little ones may have grown out of, you can take to the shop and earn a little bit of cash. Carly has already sold some items for me within a few days and I’ve since used the money to put towards the baby. LIFE UNDER THE STAIRS by Local Resident, Jane Stevenson THE FATE OF THE FETE What has happened to the local fetes? Following on from reports of police intervention at the recent Stone Fete and murmurs that the Dartford Festival only really caters for music fans and high-end car salesmen I’m sad that such a British tradition seems to have died a death. Has it really become so much more corporate and expensive to run? I freely admit to seeing this whole question through rose coloured spectacles. I love a good fete, where I can play tombola games, rifle though bric a brac, books and puzzles, and enjoy homemade cakes and a strong brew. I can also remember the Dartford Show of years ago which seemed to offer so much more in the way of community involvement. Having said that, I haven’t been for a number of years, simply because I felt it was moving away from that whole idea. I seem to recall there used to be a parade of floats through the town, advertising local business, uniformed groups and social activities. I’m guessing it doesn’t happen anymore.

I could never have afforded in the early 1990s. OH and I recently took ourselves off to a well known chain for a quiet, late lunch. I should have guessed something was up when the car park was full on a Tuesday at 1.30pm. We parked and entered. I was amazed at the number of children present. We were seated next to a couple of women, both with small toddlers and got talking to them. This was a regular event for them, as both worked in the evenings and with school age children as well, a social meet up wasn’t always easy. The restaurant provided a cheap and nutritious lunchtime menu and children’s portions – and they could have a couple of hours to themselves before the school run. Times have changed indeed – and for the better. I’m all for eating out with youngsters. It introduces them social skills, manners, offers the challenge of trying a new food and helps establish a degree of independence. It is a chance for them to observe mum, chatting and relaxed with friends, away from the routine of home. It has become the norm. It’s another form of learning.

Nowadays, the nearest I get to a traditional fete is watching TEACH YOUR CHILDREN WELL …. AND FEED THEM ON one on TV - Midsomer Murders for example – and that always YOUR DREAMS (Courtesy Crosby Stills and Nash) gets cancelled because someone gets killed! As someone who joined Friends of the Earth in the heady, days of the 1970s, I tried to educate my two children about I have no answers; is it a peculiarly British tradition, which recycling, climate change, upcycling etc, when they were in this day and age has out grown its use? RECIPE -

VANILLA COOKIES

by Debbie Dickinson

I love making cookies and these are a perfect activity to do with the kids over the holidays. Use any cookie cutters to make whatever shapes and designs you want. You will need: 200g block butter (at room temp) 200g caster sugar 1tsp vanilla extract 1 egg (beaten) 400g plain flour What to do: Cream the butter, sugar and vanilla extract together until smooth, pale and creamy. Add half of the egg, together with a spoonful of the flour, mix well, then scrape down the sides of the bowl. Add the rest of the egg, with another spoonful of flour and mix well again. Scrape down the sides of the bowl and add the rest of the flour. Mix well until all the flour is combined (but don’t mix for longer than necessary as will make for tougher cookies) I usually pop the mix into the fridge for about an hour now to make the dough a bit firmer and, therefore, easier to roll out.

Working with half of the dough at a time, place it between 2 sheets of greaseproof baking paper and roll out to a thickness of about 5-6mm. Cut out shapes and carefully put them onto a baking tray lined with another sheet of greaseproof baking paper. Repeat for other half of dough. Chill in the fridge, again, for about an hour to firm up. Bake at 180° (160° Fan) for about 8-10 minutes or until the edges start to go a golden-brown colour. Take out of the oven and put to one side to cool. Wash up the cookie cutters and use them to cut out rolled sugar paste. I usually turn the cookies over (to work on a flat surface) and brush some cooled boiled water/ warmed up jam on the cookie to stick the sugar paste. Use edible pens (available in most supermarkets now) or icing tubes to draw details on the cookies. Or cut out smaller sugar paste shapes as decoration. Enjoy!

Bromley Barbershop Harmony Club (The Kentones) Seeks a Musical Director The Club is a chorus of 45 men and is a registered Charity with the stated aim of encouraging men to take up singing, and to develop their skill in the craft of four part unaccompanied close harmony in the Barbershop style. We have a diverse membership and use a light touch audition, but are intent on raising our singing standard whilst still having fun rehearsing, performing and socialising. Our current MD is moving and so is unable to remain with us. We are consequently seeking a new Director who can continue the programme of raising our standard. The Club has operated successfully since 1975 but we are very open to new ideas and the new Director will be pivotal in helping us plot our future course. We rehearse on Thursday evenings in Orpington, south east London, BR6 8JE, and you can find more about us on our website www.thekentones.co.uk. If you are interested in leading our chorus and can demonstrate the appropriate skills, preferably, but not essentially, with barbershop experience, or just need further information please contact Denis Delaroute at chairman@thekentones.co.uk or call 01689 853469. Closing date for applications 31st August.

DARTFORD ARTS NETWORK TO HOLD ART AUCTION AT LIONS COMMUNITY FAYRE ON 1ST SEPTEMBER

by Kate Withstandley

On 1st September Dartford Arts Network (DAN) will be part of the Lions’ Community Fayre taking place on 1st holding an auction event to sell the art works produced September 10am - 4pm. for the Dartford Assembly project in 2016 and displayed until recently on the Lowfield Street hoardings. You can place a bid in advance by emailing us at hello@ dartfordartsnetwork.com with ‘Auction Bid’ as the subject and stating your name, bid amount and the title of the work you wish to bid on. A gallery of works available for auction can be seen on our website. If you make a bid via email, we strongly recommend that you still come along to the live event taking place at 2.15pm on One Bell Corner, Dartford High Street as it’s possible you might be outbid on the day! The Dartford Assembly project was the first of its kind in the town with original art works on boards produced following a public call-out for artists, as well as collages from community workshops and local school and college contributions. The high quality of work meant that the public reaction was overwhelmingly positive and the project’s aim - to bring more public art to the town, as well as to enhance the streetscape of the area - was more than fulfilled. Dartford Borough Council were our partners throughout the project, with generous financial support, and in negotiations with the landowner. With the subsequent progression of works on the Lowfield Street site, the hoardings have now been replaced and the artworks removed with great care by Bellway’s groundworks team.

As well as the original artwork boards (1.2m x 1.2m) we will be holding a Secret Postcard Art Sale - postcards of original artwork will be up for sale, with the artists remaining anonymous until point of sale - there may even be some famous names in there up for grabs! The net proceeds of the sales will be donated to the Lions’ chosen charity - Ellenor Hospice (minus minimal project expenses). We are very grateful to all the local artists who have agreed for their original works to be sold for this cause. The Lions’ Community Fayre is on 1st Sep 2019 on Dartford High Street. The DAN auction will take place at 2.15pm on One Bell Corner.

Dartford Arts Network are determined that these fabulous artworks should continue as a legacy of the history of the Lowfield Street site development, as well as a lasting testament to the creative talents of the Dartford population. The works will be auctioned as www.dartfordlivinglive.co.uk - www.dartfordliving.com - www.dartfordbusinessdirectory.co.uk

DSTC COMMUNITY DAY by Jonathan Dix

The day is, as far as we know, completely unique in that every student and staff member takes part in the day. It is designed not only to help those placements we go to but also try to make sure students are out of their comfort zone. Learning is not always about textbooks! At DSTC we aim for all students to be well-rounded individuals. As always we had a VIP who toured many of the placements, this year it was Ann Allen, MBE who is, amongst many other things, Chair of KCC. None of this would be possible without our sponsors. This year that was Laing O’Rourke, KCC (via member grants), WJ Horrod, Dartford Big Local, Bluewater, Fox Estates, Downton Ali Associates, Umbrella Training, Gareth Johnson MP, Dartford On the 18th July Dartford needed their sunglasses. 650 Living, Dartford Lions, Orchard Garage and EasyCoffee. students and staff from Dartford Science and Technology College entered the town wearing bright orange T shirts with For more pictures take a look at our Facebook page: facebook. the one aim of making a significant and visible difference. com/DSTCollege This was the 5th year that we have organised the event and each year it gains in momentum and exposure. This year we had 45 different placements. These ranged from organising sports events at primary schools, painting at charities – such as BEAMS and All Directions - to hosting an afternoon tea for 60 senior citizens. Although the day has to be funded we also fundraise for charities. This year we were collecting for BEAMS, Bow Lodge Babies Cats Rescue, ellenor, Swanley Therapy Centre, Macmillan and Demelza. This year we raised £1600.

BAV’S SPORTING COMMENT There will never be another finish to a Cricket Men’s World Cup final like that. For England to win it, in front of a full house at Lord’s in that incredible atmosphere, with a massive audience on TV, radio and online, could not have been any better. If that doesn’t show people what an amazing sport cricket is and seduce them to get into the game, I’m not sure what will. It was the most peculiar game of cricket, tied twice. You can debate the fairness of winning on the amount of boundaries scored, and you have to have some sympathy for New Zealand. How would we feel about that system if England had lost? Everything that was wanted to be achieved was achieved, and so much more on top. Now cricket has an amazing platform from which to build. A few miles down the road in London, Novak Djokovic saved two championship points in an epic five-set match lasting four hours 57 minutes., Wimbledon’s longest singles final, to retain his title in a thrilling win over Roger Federer.

FITNESS TACKLING PROBLEM AREAS

By Mark Broadbent

I see so many people going to the gym and doing “a workout”, possibly one they’ve made up, possibly one they’ve found on the internet or in a magazine, possibly one written for them by a fitness trainer, or possibly even one guided by a Personal Trainer, yet I’d guess at least half of them (probably more) are doing the wrong things based on their goals.

Hormone), HIIT training is fantastic. Short, high-intensity workouts that create lactic acid, using big movements and hit your whole body will do exactly this. Not necessarily on cardio equipment, you can do this with most exercises – the big, compound lifts being the best.

You see, whilst for a completely untrained individual just getting into working out, almost anything will be beneficial - get used to the machines, get used to different exercises, just play around a bit and find what you enjoy doing the most (or hate the least); but there are many different methods of training, each suited to slightly different outcomes.

At this intensity you’ll be using different energy systems so fat-burning during your workout will be less profound, but the increased growth hormone output will create an environment more conducive to burning extra calories for the next 24-48 hours. You’ll also be working the muscles harder, again preserving muscle tissue and encouraging your body to break down fats instead of muscle for fuel.

The main thing to bear in mind going into any workout, is what you want to achieve from this workout. This is a great option if you’re short on time. Is it better than traditional cardio? In my opinion, yes, for these reasons. Is The two most common things I tend to see (purely because it more effective? There’s not much in it, different methods weight/fat loss, and muscle gain are by far the most common work for different people, but for the reasons I’ve explained goals in gym-going populations) are people trying to lose (mainly preservation of muscle tissue), I’d always opt for HIIT weight/burn calories doing strength work, and people trying and save the low intensity stuff for walking around day-to-day. to get bigger lifting too heavy. A good tip would be to do your HIIT workout to prime your body to burn fat, and then go for a walk or do your low I’ll address the fat loss group in this article. intensity work. THEATRE REVIEW

BY LIZ DYER

The Orchard Theatre is getting a makeover this summer, which will see it reopen with new seats, updated tech equipment, improved accessibility and increased capacity. That means we’ll have to look elsewhere to get our theatre fix in August, before the theatre reopens in style with some fantastic shows in September.

this and Nell Gwynn for the rest of the summer – visit changeling-theatre.com for details. Further afield, the Marlowe in Canterbury is playing host to Little Miss Sunshine (31st July-3rd August), a new musical based on the Oscar-winning 2006 movie, which tells the story of a dysfunctional family on a road trip across America to get little Olive to her beauty pageant. The show got great reviews during its London run at the Arcola Theatre, before embarking on a UK tour starring Corrie actor Mark Moraghan and Lucy O’Byrne, who we last saw in Dartford as Maria in The Sound of Music.

It also means we miss out on this year’s Summer Youth Project, which is always a highlight and hopefully will return in 2020. Instead, the theatre’s offering a series of workshops this month, giving children and young people between 9 and 19 the opportunity to learn about everything from stage combat to circus skills, musical theatre to stage makeup. These will take place between 29th July For those looking for a West End recommendation, here and 9th August – visit the Orchard website for details. are a few hot London tickets this summer… The new production of Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat at Meanwhile, there is another Summer Youth Project taking the Palladium, starring Sheridan Smith and Jason Donovan, place not too far away – Centre Stage Academy’s two- opened last month to fantastic reviews and runs until week summer course for 8-21 year olds will conclude with September. Waitress is a very funny musical about love, a performance of Our House on 9th and 10th August at marriage and baking, with a cast that currently includes Woodville Halls in Gravesend. This romantic comedy set to Pussycat Doll and Strictly finalist Ashley Roberts. And the music of Madness was written by Tim Firth (Calendar the show that everyone should go and see – especially Girls, The Band) and won an Olivier award for Best New now - is Come From Away, a heartwarming new show Musical in 2003, so should be a lot of fun. about the small community in Canada who took in 7,000 stranded passengers on 9/11. CAR NEWS AUGUST 2019

By Dhiren Ganesh

In this month’s article we look at an anniversary edition, speed of 187mph. The GT4 is derived from the regular new sports version and a new more affordable electric SUV. Cayman, it shares many of that car’s excellent qualities. For example, the steering wheel is in line with both and equipped with an extensive adjustable reach and height range, meaning two 6 ft 3” adults can sit comfortably with plenty of leg and head room. The car is available to order now from £75,348.

2019 Mini 60 Years Edition – the original Mini is one of the most iconic cars on the road and now it celebrates 60 years. In total, 500 of these three-door-only limited edition models will roll off the production line and the only engine available is the 2.0-litre turbocharged Cooper S. With the 60 Year Edition - it’s based on the standard Cooper S, but gets a host of styling tweaks, including this fetching British Racing Green paint, with a black contrast roof. It is on sale now with a starting price from £29,990. 2020 MG ZS EV – this is the MG version of their SUV electric car which they claim is the first SUV in the market which is cheap to run and to buy. The new electric model isn’t quite the same bargain-basement offering as the petrol-powered ZS. However, it is priced in line with petrol SUVs from more established brands. Perhaps more to the point, the ZS EV is vastly cheaper than its closest battery-powered SUV rivals, like the Qashqai. It’s not too slow either with a 0-60mph sprint takes a very respectable 8.5sec. The ZS EV’s range is around 163 miles as quoted by MG, compared to the Renault Zoe 186 miles and Kia e-Niro 282 miles. The ZS EV can take up to 50kW from a public CCS point, giving a 0-80% top-up in around 40 minutes. If you charge up at home using a Type 2 connector, as most owners will, the car’s 2019 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 – the Porsche 718 44.5kWh battery takes roughly 6.5 hours to charge to Cayman GT4 is special as It comes with a much improved full from empty. It will be on sale from September 2019 4.0 litre flax six engine which prodcues 414bhp. The GT4 priced from £21,495 (after government grant and MG is claimed to do 25.7mpg and emit 249 g/km of CO2. Its guaranteed discount). speed will take it from 0-62mph in 4.4sec and hit a top www.dartfordlivinglive.co.uk - www.dartfordliving.com - www.dartfordbusinessdirectory.co.uk

MONEY ADVICE

by CAP

Top tips for the school term ahead Getting children ready for their first day back at school can come with lots of challenges. The retail sector’s massive marketing campaigns, with shops full of ‘back to school’ merchandise, try to make us feel we have to buy everything new – but that’s not necessarily the case. And the new school year challenges aren’t just financial. Here are some tips to make preparing a little easier. Are new uniforms necessary? There’s an expectation that each child needs a new uniform, sports kit and school bag ready for the first day back. However, it pays to be realistic – does your child really need all new stuff? Could their shoes from last term be worn for a little longer? If money is tight it makes sense to make everything last that bit longer. Only buy new if needed! If you do need to hit the shops, be firm with yourself and ask, ‘What do the kids really need?’ Cut your list down as much as possible and only buy what’s absolutely necessary. Most supermarkets have basics such as polo shirts, trousers and dresses at budget prices. Keep an eye out for offers and any chances to get your hands on free or reduced cost uniform – some schools pass on donated uniform or there may be clothes swaps. Don’t forget to check the charity shops too! Do you and your child know what to expect on the first day at school? If your child is starting school for the first time in Reception or Year 1, it helps if you can discuss the routine with them so they know what to expect. You may find little ones get very tired as they adjust to a lot of changes. You could try arranging little treats for them such as their favourite food for lunch or tea so their first few days are associated with things they enjoy.

fears so you can understand and work towards some solutions. You could also talk about the positives of your own school days, such as the fun of making new friends and learning new subjects. If your children are concerned about travel to the new school, you could do a few dummy runs during the last few weeks of the summer holidays to reassure you both. For examples of issues which may come up and advice about how to deal with them, see tinies.com/our-favourites/ transition-from-primary-to-secondary-school. Your child’s primary school should also have a programme of support for transitioning to high school. Many areas offer transition days where children spend a day at their new school. Some high schools also have open evenings for parents of new starters. You may be able to meet the head teacher and find out about the school including arrangements for lockers and after school activities. What support is available for students with additional needs? Extra support may be required if your child has additional needs, in order to make the transition as smooth as possible. There are some great suggestions at mentalhealth.org.uk/learning-disabilities. Why not start budgeting for next year? If you’ve been anxious about affording everything needed for this year, consider looking at your budget and making a plan to save for a better year ahead. Christians Against Poverty (CAP) is a UK charity with over 600 services across the country delivering debt counselling, money management, job clubs, life skills groups and support for people breaking addictions. Visit capuk.org or call 0800 328 0006 to find out more.

What can you do to ease the move from primary to high school? Children moving up from primary to secondary school may be nervous of such a big change. There are ways to help with this. Chat to your kids about their hopes and 46
