F RO M THE MANAGER

DARYL McMAHON

Good afternoon everyone from the Chigwell Construction Stadium. I hope you are all keeping safe and well. I would like to wish a warm welcome to James Rowe, his staff, and his Chesterfield squad ahead of this weekend’s game. On Eastleigh defeat

It was a poor performance from us on Tuesday night away at Eastleigh and we got all that we deserved. It was the exact polar opposite on how we played on Saturday against King’s Lynn Town. We lacked any conviction in what we did on Tuesday and at the minute we are a very inconsistent team, and we have to find that consistency quickly.

I think in the last five games we have played; we have won three and lost two which does not sound that bad, but I look at the performances in the games we have lost, and they are so different from the performance when we win it is frightening. We really need to close the gap now and become more consistent if we are going to be a team that wants to challenge at the top end of the table. On squad confidence

I know how much these players want to be successful and how much they want to win because I see it day in day out.

If the team did not believe or was not fighting, you would not have seen that performance in the second half against King’s Lynn. Some teams when that happens, they fold, or they feel sorry

for themselves and that team at the weekend did everything but that. On today’s opposition

Looking ahead to today’s game against Chesterfield, we need to work on ourselves and we need to make sure that we are hitting the levels as a group we can hit, which we have shown across the season.

You can go through many games where we put on really good performances, we just have to hit those levels more consistently if we want to be, as I have said before, a team that challenges at the top end of the table.

James Rowe has come in at Chesterfield and they have gone on a good run. He signed three or four players from his previous club Gloucester, and I think they have given his club a new energy and a new bit of bite.

The players that have come in from the league below are hungry and they want to do well at this level and showcase what they can do.

So far, they have done well, and we know it will be a tough test today, but it is one we as a group look forward to. Enjoy the game. Daryl.

CAL LUM REYN OLDS

THE CAPTAIN

GOOD AFTERNOON AND WELCOME FROM THE CHIGWELL CONSTRUCTION STADIUM

The trip to Eastleigh was very frustrating, considering how we reacted in the second half last Saturday to put us in a good position to get a result, which we didn’t take. It is very frustrating because it has happened a few times now, without looking too far ahead at the games, we seem to get a good result but then not follow that up which will ultimately cost us with that inconsistency, if we do not improve on that.

For the first goal, there were five or six attacking in the box, but we should have reacted to the set- piece and got out there to block the shot, because it has gone through two or three players before going in. Then there were the two penalties, but we can’t let that mask over the performance because it wasn’t good enough letting Eastleigh get into those positions in the first place to get the penalties. We haven’t won back-to-back league games once this season and I understand that league positions can be a bit false but without looking back too much, if we had got the win on Tuesday night, we would have been one point off the play-offs and looking up. Unfortunately, at the minute it is one step forward, then two steps back which is something that we need to improve on straight away as a team. The league positions in the past couple of seasons for the Club have reflected that same kind of form which is not where the Club or I want to be. I didn’t join the side to be a mid-table team, I want to be successful with this Club but to do that we need to improve as a team. I think that improving the consistency needs to come both individually and collectively as a team, there is no point in one or two players playing well and the rest not because that is not enough. That can come with experience, although I do believe we have that experience when I look around the team, but it is also a mentality thing as well because ability wise, the ability is there but 10 THE DAGGER

I

30.01.21 V CHESTERFIELD

we need to learn how to play better as a team. We also need to be more ruthless as well, and that is in both boxes, as I do think we are not playing too badly between the boxes. Not many people would like to hear this, but I would rather win a scrappy affair 1-0 every week than playing some nice stuff but not get the results, which is a sign of a successful team when you are able to do that. It is only going to come from hard work really on the training pitch and taking that into the games. There is not a lot of time between games at the minute, but recovery is important because we do not want to be picking up any injuries. We have been working on the game plan for this afternoon’s match in training this week after Tuesday as we know it will be another tough game as they have been doing really well since their new manager came in. We didn’t come back into training feeling sorry for ourselves following the result, we came back into work looking ahead and forward to today’s game and getting a result. They have got some very good players and they have a bit of everything, especially up top where they have the target man Denton, along with the signings from Gloucester who have hit the ground running. They also have a lot of experience, so we are expecting another tough match, but we are at home and we need to be going into every game looking to win. Looking at the league table, we can go above them if we win which would be good for momentum and psychologically as well. Every game is important and there are a lot of points up for grabs, especially as we seem to be playing teams that are in and around us, so it is down to us to get ourselves up the league table. Enjoy the game Callum Reynolds

ACTIONSTATIONS V EASTLEIGH

Dagenham & Redbridge fell to a 3-0 defeat at the Silverlake Stadium on Tuesday evening with a goal from Ryan Hill and two penalties from Joe Tomlinson handing the home side the three points. Daryl McMahon named an unchanged side after coming back from 2-0 down at halftime to defeat Kings Lynn Town 3-2 at the weekend.

The hosts had the opening chance of the match, former Daggers loanee Ben House having his shot saved by Elliot Justham after making a run in behind the Daggers defence. The Spitfires did take an early lead shortly after, Ryan Hill finding the bottom corner after being left unmarked on the edge of the box from a corner. The visitors then had their first opportunity of the match, a header from Paul McCallum easily held by Joe McDonnell.

The Daggers put the pressure on from a few corners, the second of which saw Dean Rance have a shot blocked from inside the area for a further corner which unfortunately came to nothing.

Eastleigh nearly doubled their lead midway through the first half, Mitch Brundle clearing an effort off the line following a quick counterattack. Angelo Balanta picked up the ball in space, driving forward but could only strike at McDonnell in the Eastleigh goal.

The away side thought they had an equaliser

14 THE DAGGER

I

when McCallum had the ball in the back of

the net against his former side, but the

forward was adjudged to have been offside. The Daggers had the ball in the back of the

net for a second time, but the referee gave a foul on the Eastleigh goalkeeper before Rance fired into the back of the net.

The home side were awarded a penalty

shortly after the start of the second period as Rance was judged to have hand-balled when blocking an effort from House. Joe

Tomlinson stepped up to double the lead for

the hosts, sending Justham the wrong way. McCallum headed over with the Daggers

looking for an equaliser, then on the

counterattack Tyrone Barnett was inches

away from scoring a third for the Spitfires

after a great ball in from the right-hand side. Callum Reynolds showed some skill on the edge of the area but could only slice his

effort over the bar before McCallum fired an

effort over the bar.

Eastleigh won another penalty after Brundle took out his man inside the area which

Tomlinson converted for a second time to give the home side a 3-0 lead.

The Daggers couldn’t find a way back into

the game, with Eastleigh securing the victory on a disappointing evening for the side.

This week, we sat down with Andy Eleftheriou as the full-back reflects on our two recent matches. On the Eastleigh defeat: It was a frustrating match. We were unchanged from the weekend and we went into the game with the same kind of game plan, which was to create chances and be on the front foot. I think it came down to Eastleigh playing the conditions better than we did. The pitch was poor but it’s not an excuse, it’s nothing new at this level. I think in the small moments that we did pass the ball around and create openings, we had better quality than them, but they definitely played the conditions on the night better than we did. We conceded from three set-pieces, which is always disappointing. It’s never good to give away a penalty, so to concede two was so poor. We had two goals that were disallowed which was unfortunate. Sometimes the rub of the green is on the other side and we know that we can do better than how we performed on Tuesday. Building Consistency: We haven’t been able to put a consistent run of results together since we came back from our period of isolation over Christmas. That came at a really bad time, we’d just gained a lot of confidence from beating Ebbsfleet in the 22 THE DAGGER

I

30.01.21 V CHESTERFIELD

trophy and then picked up a really good away win at Dover in tough conditions. However, it’s happened to every team and those excuses aren’t valid. These are the times that we’re living in at the moment and we need to continue to work hard and be ready for today’s match because we want to start putting a run of results together. If we can put a run of games together then we’re not faroff fighting in and around those play-off places. Scoring Against King’s Lynn: I’m sure I heard someone say, ‘chip him’, so I had to go for the shot didn’t I! It’s the first professional goal of my career and hopefully I can grab many more. I was just pleased to be able to contribute and get the win at home. We had so many shots in the match, which is something that we need to be targeting in every match that we play. We could have been a little bit more clinical with some of those, but it was pleasing to see how many we created last weekend. On Facing Chesterfield: They’ve brought in players from the lower divisions that want to prove themselves and they’ve done well in recent weeks. We have the quality in our team, if we work hard enough to pick up three points and start climbing the table this afternoon. It’s key that we apply ourselves and hit the levels that we know we can, so that we can get the best possible outcome, which is three points.

Will is brilliant with the ball at his feet and can pick out some amazing passes, but he also has really good close control. He’s a solid professional, who works and trains hard in everything he does.

Ben is a good all-rounder, who I played with at Braintree. He’s great with his feet and a good shot stopper. He’s also a very good leader and was the skipper at Braintree when I was there on loan.

Daryl has had a hell of a career. He’s a top-class pro and he really understands the tactical side of the game.

Maps is a seasoned pro. He’s very good on the ball, physical and very hard working. He’s had a great career and is still going at 34 for Bristol City.

CB - Connor Stevens

LB - Brandon Mason

He’s at Coventry right now and I played with him in Watford’s Academy. He has bags of potential and he will go onto have a very good career.

CM - Abdoulaye DoucourE

What an athlete this man is. He’s quick, strong, makes those bursting runs from midfield but also has the energy to get back in.

MY BEST XI It was crazy to play against them. The game was so fast and so sharp. I’d been training with the first team for the entire season and had been on the bench 17 times, as well as being involved in friendly and training matches against good teams. You think that you’re at that level and then you see Kevin De

Another play that is so direct. He’s quick, strong and has an eye for goal cutting inside.

ST - Troy Deeney

Troy is a great leader; he works hard and is physical. You put anything in the box for him and he will win it. He’s got that fighting mentality that he will do anything it takes to win, which is something I really admire.

Connor dropped down to Wealdstone after leaving Watford. He’s injured at the moment, but he will get back into their team, he’s a solid defender.

ON Playing Against City Manchester City:

This man is like a genie on the ball. His first touch is crazy. He’s gone out to Udinese.

RW - Isaac Success

A physical beast. He’s strong, fast and on his day is unplayable. I’ve seen him tear teams apart when he’s been firing on all cylinders.

JUST MISSES OUT

Nathan Ake: He was on loan at Watford during the 2015/16

season and played a few times with me in the U23’s when he was on his way back from injury.

Odion Ighalo: I played in the same team as Ighalo in a friendly match so I can’t put him in my main team, but the guy was so powerful and at that time was in such good form.

Bruyne and David Silva passing the ball through the eye of the needle, Leroy Sane running past me, it was amazing. You play with these guys on FIFA and think ‘are they real?’ and when you play against them and you’re a bit starstruck. Every decision they make is right, every run is correct and that’s why the game looks as good as it does on the TV. DAGGERS.CO.UK

bottom corner, following a well worked move from the visiting midfield.

The Daggers almost had the perfect response moments after the restart, when Angelo Balanta was afforded too much space by the Linnets defence, but his ferocious shot cannoning off the bar. Daryl McMahon’s men were pressing hard for a leveller just before the break, with Deering and Brundle off target from range.

With one minute to play, Brundle once again carved his way through the Linnets defence, only for his dangerous looking effort to dribble inches wide of the upright.

But with seconds before the referee brought the half to an end, King’s Lynn struck again when Gash bundled a Cameron King cross over the line.

Mitch Brundle’s last-gasp strike completed an epic comeback as the Daggers saw off King’s Lynn Town 3-2 at the Chigwell Construction Stadium. Alex Kiwomya gave the Linnets the lead after 30 minutes, tucking the ball home into the bottom corner of the net. The visitors lead was doubled just before the break, with Michael Gash combining from close range, following a Cameron King assist.

Callum Reynolds’ header and Andrew Eleftheriou deservedly drew the Daggers level with second half strikes. And with seconds remaining, Mitch Brundle slotted home to hand the hosts a deserved three points. The Daggers started brightly and in the opening minutes, after Deering was felled just on the edge of the box, Mitch Brundle fired a dangerous freekick straight into the wall. Spurred on by their strong start, Dagenham almost took the lead in the seventh minute, with Elliott Johnson firing just over the crossbar from a well-taken corner.

But King’s Lynn was beginning to warm into the game on the 10th minute, with the home defence forced into some desperate defending, following a threatening corner. After a frantic opening period, both sides settled into the game, with Dagenham remaining on the front foot, despite the best efforts of the visitors.

But in the 30th minute, King’s Lynn broke the deadlock, with Kiwomya slotting into the

The hosts came out firing in the second half, with Brundle once again testing the visiting defence in the 52nd minute, but nobody can get a touch on his dangerous cross.

King’s Lynn was struggling to deal with the Dagenham onslaught, and only a smart save from Mair in the 57th minute denied McCallum’s close-range header.

Just past the hour mark, the Daggers should have really reduced the Linnets lead to one, when a close range shot from McCallum, following a goal mouth scramble, came crashing against the underside of the crossbar, before being hacked away to safety.

The hosts were rewarded for their pressure as in the 74th minute, Daggers captain Reynolds powered his head from the centre of the box beyond the helpless Linnets ‘keeper to claw a goal back. And just like that, only two minutes later, Eleftheriou drew the hosts level, catching the ‘keeper out with his cross/shot which found the back of the net.

The visitors were buckling and in the 79th minute, they almost conceded a third goal in nine minutes, when Wilson stabbed his effort agonisingly wide.

In the 89th minute, the Daggers were handed a golden opportunity to grab all three points, when the referee pointed to the spot. Despite the ‘keeper saving Brundle’s initial effort, the midfielder converted from the resulting corner, giving McMahon’s men the lead late on.

And despite a late spell of pressure from King’s Lynn, Dagenham held on to secure a fantastic comeback win.
