Local News - APRIL 2016

£17 million earmarked for pierhead The masterplan to transform Helensburgh pierhead area, which was approved more than three years ago, has come closer to reality, although it is still not clear what shape or form it will take. The CA understands that the architects were told to “strip out all the frills” from the original very ambitious design and bring the budget down from the aspirational stuff included in the original design. There was a boost in the Budget. George Osborne announced that Helensburgh will receive £5 million to help fund the new community facility. The

cash follows an appeal by Ruth Davidson MSP to the Chancellor for help to build and rejuvenate the waterfront. This will also benefit the Royal Navy personnel based at Faslane. Recently the council announced that it is pushing forward with a £17m project to transform Helensburgh waterfront. The authority had already committed £11m to the project. Now it will add another £6m to

the project, bridging a funding gap. The masterplan approved in 2012 included a ‘landmark pool and leisure building’, landscaping and a skateboard park / play park, coach and taxi drop off, public space in front of the pool building, public walkway round the site, parking for pool, public parking and retail development. Helensburgh and Lomond area committee chair Gary Mulvaney said: “We have identified a £17million scheme which will see Helensburgh Pier transformed, with new flood defences, a new swimming pool and leisure centre and improvements to the car park and public spaces. “The waterfront project is the final piece of the jigsaw which will make Helensburgh an even

more attractive place for people to live, work, visit and invest. Last year Argyll and Bute Council recruited a project manager to oversee the redevelopment. It is understood that the existing pool would remain open until a new one is complete. It would then be demolished and the space used for additional retail units. If investors come on board it will undoubtedly be a major boost with flexible retail space providing large square footage currently unavailable in the town, and demanded by major outlets. The layout will be capable of accommodating a large retail unit alongside smaller shops fronting onto West Clyde Street. A large supermarket on the site has been ruled out. The council say that a key role of the manager is to prepare a robust business case, which maximises the opportunity to lever in both public and private sector funding. CONCERN: Locals are concerned about the future of Rhu post office

Rhu residents are worried about the future of their post office as the postmaster has been left without firm news on whether or not he is going to be able to carry on. Back in January 2015 we reported the happy news that Alan Hatton, the grandson of former Rhu village postmaster Billie Petrie had managed to negotiate a contract with the Post Office to ensure the future of the 100 year old post office, which was in danger of closure.

The background is that the Post Office want the counter service as an add on to a normal shop - as in the often criticised Helensburgh operation. On this model the postmaster gets the profit from sales, but no salary for running the post office which is just seen as a way of increasing footfall into the shop. Since Rhu only sells cards and local art it is not enough to sustain it. Customers say it is a vital public service and constantly in use. Rhu offers the full range of post office services like cash withdrawals from most banks, DVLA, health and national lottery, ISAs, premium bonds travel insurance, parcel pick up, overseas money grams and more.

As Alan told us at the time: “ There was one factor that drove my decision, it is the customers. I’ve got to know them very well and all their family news. They are so pleased I’m carrying on. It has been quite heartfelt . It is their backing that has kept me here. “

Top talent for Christian Aid

Following the outstanding success of last year's Christian Aid concert, the town's Christian Aid committee challenged organisers to present something equally interesting and attractive. Last year guest choristers from Sweden joined singers and musicians from Scotland. This year David Bruce, Louise Burnet, and their colleagues have brought together an orchestra consisting of professional and amateur players, most of them local to Helensburgh, in a programme which features one of the most popular concertos ever written –

Mozart's concerto for flute and harp, K299. Louise Burnet is one of the best-known of our local professional musicians, as player, composer, and teacher. She was the composer-director of the remarkable musical event which celebrated the opening of the John Muir Way in 2014. In 2015, she toured America with her trio,

' Vocali3s'. Megan Garrity moved to Helensburgh in 2014 and is the founder of Kneehigh concerts – a series of daytime concerts for babies, toddlers and their grownups. She studied harp at Chetham’s School of Music. Megan has performed extensively in many venues throughout the country. Conductor David Bruce said “On 1st May, the hour-long concert in the United Reformed Church also includes Handel's 'Arrival of the Queen of Sheba' and a short early symphony by Haydn, No 22, 'The Philosopher', which is scored for the unusual combination of strings, horns, and two cor anglais. “This concert heralds Christian Aid Week 2016 which begins on May 15. This year, the focus is on Bangladesh and projects connected with climate change. As always, fund-raising is vital to the success of these projects. “ Entry donations to the concert are suggested at £8 or £5 concession. Helensburgh Community Council (HCC) has joined forces with residents in the James Street area of Helensburgh to try to restore the street’s park and turn it into a community garden. A small group has formed to work with Argyll and Bute Council, the owner of the Park, to take the project forward. They are currently planning a community consultation to give people an opportunity to have a say on how the park could be improved and developed. The consultation is scheduled for Saturday 23 April

between 1.30pm-3.30pm in the park. Stewart Noble, HCC treasurer, applied for Stalled Spaces funding and an award for ÂŁ2,500 has been granted ‘in principle’. One of the conditions of the award is that the local community are consulted and encouraged to participate in any plans for the

development of the Park. Jean MacAulay, who lives close to the park, said: “Finding an attractive and inspiring low maintenance solution for the Park will be key to its future sustainability. We also need to get more local residents engaged and interested in improving the park now and in the longer term. “We have lots of ideas and we’re keen that it’s a space parents and children can enjoy, as well as retired people and anyone who has an interest in gardening and wildlife. Rachel Bailey, a local garden designer, is preparing visuals for how the park could look for display at the community consultation on April 23. Ward Coucillor Aileen Morton said: “ When the equipment needed to be removed from the park for safety reasons two years ago, a number of local residents contacted me as they were keen to see the park retained for community use. I hope more people who live nearby or use the park will get involved – either directly with the group or by coming to the consultation.

Workshop inspiring new writing history and landscape and have taken over as editor of the booklets produced by the Writers’ Workshop. It’s great discipline to get together regularly, read work aloud and be with like-minded people. “

NEW PRESIDENT: Rachel Boak will be taking over as president at the Writers' Workshop

The Helensburgh Writers’ Workshop was founded in 1972 and is still going strong. From April a new President, Rachel Boak, will be taking the helm. Rachel studied English Language and Literature at Oxford and has been writing since the age of about 12, composing stories to amuse herself, serials to amuse her sister on holiday, and sketches and plays performed at home. Rachel says, “I joined Helensburgh Writers’ Workshop in 2015 shortly after I moved to the area from England where I was a curator for

the National Trust. I’ve wanted to develop my writing for some time but, while I was working, I never had the opportunity or freedom. The Writers’ Workshop has given me confidence to try different types of writing in the supportive environment of a friendly group of imaginative people. “ I’m currently working on fiction for children inspired by Scottish

Rachel says that the programme over the next year will continue to provide opportunities for members to bring anything they are working on for comments from others, but they’ll also be trying different types of writing and inviting guests to speak on a range of subjects. She adds: “ New-look booklets containing examples of our work will appear four times a year. They aim to show the variety of talent, humour and imagination within the group, but perhaps will prompt others to have a go at writing by including some of the exercises we have tried, such as creating flash fiction – very short stories – and starting and ending a story with the same line. “ The Workshop meets on Monday nights from 7.30 to 9.30pm in the Gathering Rooms at Helensburgh Parish Church. www. helensburghwriters.co.uk

EMPATHY CAN CHANGE LIVES I believe it’s possible to live a life you love. Empathic coaching can help you live your vision whilst taking care of your well-being. I do work I’m passionate about, support family, friends, care for animals and have time to enjoy activities I love. I live simply, feel more balanced, grateful and present. Empathic coaching isn’t about ‘being positive’ or using self affirmations, it’s about working with reality and developing the skills you need to live a deeply satisfying life. It’s been a major tool in helping me reveal the support and guidance that I need. I’m happier with my choices and able to find compassion for myself when I make ones I regret. It isn’t a magic wand, change takes time and effort. I want to live in a world where everyone can experience this level of support and trust in life. We cannot do it alone.

I enjoy being invited to share about empathy and to find ways we can foster compassionate communities... where everyone matters. More care and fun, less blame and suffering. I support individuals through coaching and deliver training in empathy and professional development across sectors. Empathy benefits everyone, it can support our individual growth as well as thriving teams and businesses. If you’re curious to know more I’d be delighted to hear from you. jaynemiddletoncoaching.com nurturingpotential@gmail.com

The Tower, a local charity which was formed in 2014, will be opening two digital cinema screens inside the converted church complex building which is located on the corners of Sinclair and West King Streets in the heart of the town. The Centre, which recently opened the only Apple Authorised Training Centre in the West of Scotland as well as becoming the home for University of the Highlands and Islands (creative industries courses commence April 18th) in Helensburgh, was recently reclassified as a class 11 site (Entertainment centre) enabling it to offer the latest films. Helensburgh which has a long and strong association with film makers and actors (Deborah Kerr, The Clyde Family, Mary Ure & Tom Vaughan to name a few), had its last cinema ‘La Scala’ close in 1980. attempts to raise grants and secure government funds for a new cinema. The Tower has raised all of the funds required from corporate sponsorships and social loans. Over the past 12 months the new arts centre has hosted live theatre, national orchestras, ballets, traditional musicians and bands, and created new events as well introducing streamed live events from the National Theatre, Bolshoi Ballet, Met and Royal Opera and in doing so built up a local following of over 8,000 who've come through its doors. The Tower is the main supplier of cinema services to the Royal Navy and will offer special screenings for mothers and babies, retirees, seniors and silver screeners and will operate weekend matinees for children. The Centre plans to be open seven days 10 until 10 and is recruiting ushers and front of house staff to coincide with the official cinema opening.

For details about employment opportunities see www.facebook. com/TheTowerHelensburgh. The Tower recently signed its first exhibition agreement with Walt Disney films and will be screening their latest blockbuster ‘The Jungle Book’ from its international release date the 15th of April. The Gala opening of these new community assets will also be the start date for ten new employees at The Tower who will be joining the volunteers and Friends of the Tower at the opening. A full schedule of the films on offer can be seen at the www.TowerCinema.org. ‘We will be scheduling the latest films and are working with the groups in the town to deliver appropriate content to all groups in the area’ said Nicola Jamieson The Tower’s General Manager. ‘The Tower is evolving into a hub for the town’s digital, cultural & learning organisations and the new Cinemas are a very important part of that’ she added.

Cash for plots at Clydeview

GARDEN GRANTS: Residents have managed to secure funding

Residents at Dunbritton Housing Association’s Clydeview development in Helensburgh have been working hard to establish community garden plots in the grounds of the property. The Clydeview Growing Group applied for funding to realise their ambitions and were awarded two substantial grants. Community Health and Food Scotland have awarded the group £1,980 and Awards for All from the National Lottery £4,450. The money will allow the group to create raised beds which will be accessible for all residents regardless of their mobility. Nigel Stevenson chairperson of

the group said “We can now get started with the creation of our garden plots. A lot of the residents here previously owned houses with gardens and miss the enjoyment of cultivating a garden. We would like to thank Dunbritton HA, Community Health and Food Scotland and Awards for All from the National Lottery for all their help and now look forward to seeing our ambitions come to fruition.”

Sephton MacQuire, chairperson of Dunbritton Housing Association said, “This is a fantastic outcome for a group of local residents with an aspiration to do something to improve their community. The plots will provide a great opportunity to grow healthy fruit and veg and also provide opportunities for social interaction among residents.” Bill Gray, Organisational Lead at Community Food at NHS Health Scotland said: “NHS Health Scotland is delighted to award funding to this group of keen, new and experienced gardeners, so they can enjoy being outside, growing their own food at their new homes, enabling the residents to experience the range of health benefits associated with gardening.”

Awards for All say: “This funding will help build a sense of community and provide accessible gardening opportunities that all residents can enjoy.” The group have already started work on the plots in preparation for the start of the growing season.

TOO SWEET TO BE WHOLESOME?

Last month the Chancellor’s announcement of a sugar tax was met with negative headlines in Scotland, including “The Irn Chancellor”, “Shares in Irn Bru plummet” and “Irn Brute”. The suggestion was that this would penalise Scots unfairly, focussing on Scotland’s “other national drink”. Unfortunately, it seemed that the real message was lost! In Scotland we eat or drink three times the recommended amount of sugar, increasing risks of obesity and tooth decay. Scotland has the second highest rate of obesity in Europe, and can lead

to diabetes, heart disease, premature death and even some cancers, costing the NHS around £500 million every year. Sugary drinks are a common source of sugar intake, and research shows that taxing these drinks could reduce the numbers of obese people in Scotland by 27,000. Sugar taxes have already been introduced in many other countries such as France, Australia and America. When the carrier bag charge was first introduced it was criticised, but it has been very effective in reducing wasteful use of bags. The sugar tax may seem a small step, but may help us create a healthier image of Scotland!

Saving LITTLE Miss Tiggywinkle The once common sight of hedgehogs in gardens could become a thing of the past, with the spiny species having suffered a dramatic decline in recent years on a par with the loss of starlings, red squirrels and other British wildlife. Now gardeners in Helensburgh and Lomond are being urged to make a few changes in the garden to encourage them to thrive. Audrey Baird, Community Development Officer, Helensburgh and Lomond says that her two rescue hedgehogs should be coming out of hibernation soon and then she’ll release them. She says: “ Could you encourage readers to take care when using pesticides, mowing the lawn, strimming etc Hedgehogs are a

gardener’s friend eating slugs and snails etc, but they are in huge decline, estimates suggest down from 30 million to 4 million across the UK.” The People's Trust for Endangered Species (PTES), a charity which has been running counts of hedgehogs for over a decade believes there are in fact fewer than a million hedgehogs left in the UK, down from an estimated 2 million in the mid-1990s and 36 million in the 1950s. Hugh Warwick spokesman for the British Hedgehog Preservation Society, told the Guardian recently : "The most obvious thing is habitat loss. But the biggest thing is habitat fragmentation. It comes in many different forms — you put a big road through the middle of a hedgehog habitat, and then a

crossroads, and the hedgehog habitat becomes smaller and smaller. He urged people to take part in the 'hedgehog street' project (www.hedgehogstreet.org ) to build habitat and "wildlife corridors" for hedgehogs in gardens, See also http://www. hessilhead.org.uk the wildlife rescue centre in Beith North Ayrshire has a hedgehog unit and does great work returning injured birds and animals back into the wild.

APRIL 2016 - Golf Feature

Golf’s the tonic to keep With nearly everything being a young person’s game these days, this bus pass equipped hack would like to sing the praises of senior golf (writes Nick Cowie) It may not keep you looking younger - but you’ll certainly feel it. Older members may not always be the best players but they are very keen and nobody says anything when you completely miss the ball. And with golf club membership down 15% in Scotland, we are the lifeblood of the clubs these days. I read an excellent golf feature by my former colleague Colin

Dunne recently. A late recruit to the game himself, he memorably described his playing pals as: “ A shambling tribe limping up the hill. It’s hard not to laugh. Helmets with ear-flaps like Russian generals, padded jackets like Michelin men, trousers that end just before the knee, the odd tantalising glimpse of long-john

and waterproofs that would see you round the Horn in a force 10. ‘They look like the Light Brigade,’ I heard one man say. ‘On the way back.’ “Seniors, they are called in the world of golf or, as the less generous put it, old gits. Old gits we may be but I think our time has come.” Colin as ever is spot on because the fairways during the week as far as I can see are populated by gentlemen and ladies of a certain age undaunted by new hips, knees, wind, rain and occasionally snow. The youngsters with their fancy

gear and single figure handicaps may set the fairways alight at the weekend, but on weekdays, even on cold and frosty mornings, breath swirling round them in white clouds, the oldies are there stamping their feet eager, despite frustrations, failings, and the occasional heart attack to have another go at beating their handicap. Many have excelled in their time at football, rugby or hockey but are now confined to the touchlines

Golf Feature - APRIL 2016

you forever young... and the telly. Golf however is the oldies great sporting saviour. I took it up half a century too late to make the Walker Cup team. Indeed my ambition now is to lose no more than a couple of balls per round. But twice a week, or more, it gets me out for a five mile walk which, I assure you who haven’t tried it, is definitely enhanced by chasing a small white ball across heath and heather. Your playing companions may once have

been powerful men of business, teachers, electricians, policemen, even the odd politician or judge. In this area many have served queen and country on, or under, the high seas. No one cares, you stand united in the ever frustrating obsession of guiding a wee ball into a hole safe in the knowledge that there’s a defibrillator in the club house. Some do play, they claim, for health reasons, which is odd as golf is a sport fuelled almost entirely by rolls and sausages. But it is certainly well proven that golf is good for your mental health. We seniors can forget where we

put our spectacles, car keys and occasionally our children’s names, but that round five years ago when we came in ten under par, we can, and believe me given half a chance, we will, recount every shot in loving detail. You’ll also have something in common with the President of the United States of America. Mr Obama told an interviewer: “It’s a game that I keep on thinking I should be good at but somehow the ball goes this way and that way and never goes straight.” Well Mr Prez, this extraordinary ability of a golf ball to start off in

the right direction and then start to turn like an airborne banana may be one of the lesser known facts of the laws of aerodynamics, but it is intimately known by every hack golfer. The club can cut across the ball causing it to spin. For a pro this is wonderful, they can shape the most beautiful shots. For the club high handicapper however it always turns the wrong way - especially if water is involved. But really, it is a great game whether you are eight or eighty. Come and join us, you’ll be the better for it.

Local News - APRIL 2016

Seeking builder

Off your bike

Cardross Golf Club joined the World’s Biggest Quiz attempt and raised £250 for local Riding for the Disabled Group.

Cardross Tenants and Residents Association (CTRA) is on the lookout for a community-minded builder to help provide Cardross with a notice board for Community Groups.

The Rhu Primary School Fair and Bike Sale will take place on 21 May 16 from 11001400 in the school grounds.

It was the only club or pub in the area to join up with Pubaid and nearly1500 other licensed premises in an attempt to set a record for the world’s biggest quiz. Over 80 quizzers were at Cardross Golf Club on Sunday night and raised £250 for the club’s chosen charity which is based at Colgrain Equestrian Centre. Stuart Paul, Captain of the Golf Club said: “It was a pleasure to have received so much support for this event. We look forward to raising more funds for GRDA in the coming months.”

Some years ago it asked pupils at Cardross Primary to design a notice board which at that time was going to be put up by a contractor to Argyll Community Housing Association (ACHA) but by the time planning permission was received the contractor had ceased work in Cardross. That left CTRA with the plans and a site with planning permission and funds to pay for a builder to put up the notice board.

The fair will have various stalls indoors and outdoors as well as the home baking, bouncy castle, outdoor activities. This is a great opportunity to sell on bikes which the kids have grown out of and perhaps pick yourself up a bargain. The organisers are spreading the message: “ Please don’t throw out any bikes that have been outgrown. Hold on to it if it’s in good nick and you can sell it at the Fair.” For further information on the bike sale and tables available please email gshearer1972@ hotmail.co.uk

Household Tips

COLOUR CODED KEYS If you find that in your household you have a lot of keys that you tend to mix up, why not colour code them? With a bit of paint or even nail varnish you can paint the top of the key so you can find the right one quicker. Another bonus is its cheaper than buying already coloured ones.

HELENSBURGH BASED PHOTOGRAPHER

Legal Matters with Gill Bowman BA LLB

This month: PRE-NUPTIAL AGREEMENTS The idea of entering a prenuptial agreement is not necessarily the most romantic notion. However, as more people are entering second marriages or marrying later in life there are often assets in their own name they would wish to protect. In Scotland, ‘pre-nups’, also known as ante-nuptial or marriage contacts, are generally accepted as legally binding contracts and are useful in allowing individuals to ‘ring-fence’ certain assets from forming part of the matrimonial pot. A marriage contract may be of interest to someone who runs their own business or has property or savings

in their own name. It can also be useful to regulate financial provision for one of the parties in the event of separation or divorce. Like any contract, it can be challenged at a later date. However, so long as it can be shown to have been fair and reasonable at the time parties entered the agreement then the terms should be upheld. It is therefore important that both parties seek individual legal advice well in advance of the ceremony date. An open and honest conversation with your partner prior to marriage can allow parties to enter into an agreement and subsequently reduce protracted and emotionally difficult litigation in the event of divorce.

Most people can remember when the Northern Rock collapse signalled the start of the financial crisis , it was October 2007 – which seems like yesterday. Think about this... The first ever 3G smart phone sold by Apple in the UK was in July 2008. Since then the iphone has already had 8 upgrades which shows how quickly technology changes. Even in Estate Agency these developments have improved our business for the better and enables our clients to reach more potential buyers and spend less on marketing which has resulted in hugely reduced costs for selling. Before these changes you really had an edge if you sold your house with a larger company as they had much greater profile and could maximise your sales price through enhanced exposure in the press. This is completely different today as houses are rarely in newspapers and are sold by advertising on the internet. The two main property

websites in the UK are Rightmove and Zoopla. Unlike many other agents, we are on both, as well as many other sites and portals. Property Bureau is a private independent company who guarantee the best service, competitive sales fee and quality advice from some of the most experienced people in the business. We would be delighted to hear from you about any property related matters:

APRIL 2016 - Keep on Runnin' Training Runs | Trail Runs | Hill Runs | Speed Sessions | Walk to Run Road Races | Club Races | Fun Events | Family Events

Keep on Runnin' with Laura Johnstone This month: SUCCESS IN A 10K The countdown is on to the Helensburgh 10k on 12th May. A common question I get asked is "how can I run a 10k?"

returning? Just starting out or ouch to 10k "c r Get FITTER with ou Want to run FURTHER? We have targeted group s for all levels

FASTER? Fast, but want to be comfort zone ur yo of t Let us help you ou

Fulfil your potential with Helensburgh Amateur Athletic Club

WEB: www.helensburghaac.co.uk EMAIL: haacmembership@gmail.com

First- commit to an event. Choose your target and start talking about it. Once you have made the mental commitment the physical training becomes much easier. If possible find others who have the same goal. Mutual support and encouragement is a big factor in success, the social element is a large aspect of all running communities. You are far more likely to stick to training runs if you are going with others. Train! Chose a plan that will achieve your goal but is realistic with other commitments you have. Work, children, older parents, other obligations...it can be hard to fit in training. Establish a

routine that works for you and stick to it. Break it down. Achieving your first 10k is the big goal but take time to enjoy all the others on your way. Your first run. Your first 1km. Managing THAT hill without stopping. Expect at least 1 bad run. It will happen and you'll want to give up but remind yourself of all your successes along the way. Remember, this is a challenge which is why you are doing it. Enjoy the moment. When your big day comes enjoy it! You've done all the hard work, this is your moment. Online entries for the 10k are at www.polaroid-10k.co.uk and HAAC are leading a couch to 10k training programme for any new runners. Loch Lomond was chosen to host the open water swimming following the success of the Great Scottish Swim, which brings thousands of swimmers to the Loch each year. “Hosting the European Championships will give us a fantastic opportunity to showcase the National Park as a wonderful place to swim and visit, to the millions of people who will watch the games coverage across Europe. Balloch’s Great Britain swimmer Ross Murdoch said: “Multi-sport events bring out the best in athletes and also in the fans who love getting behind their nation. The moment I won gold at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow will live with me forever. I competed in the Great Scottish Swim on Loch Lomond in 2015, my first time competing in open water competition. There is nothing more free feeling than when you are swimming outside, you’ve got the trees and the hills and you can see the Ben in the background. That was pretty special.”
