Corydon Community Centre is governed by a Volunteer Board of Directors. Each year at the Annual General Meeting, new Board Members are elected and returning members re-appointed. The Annual General Meeting is also when the Board reports to the Community on all matters pertaining to Corydon Community Centre. It is a time for questions and answers. It is an opportunity for the community to give direction to the Board and Centre Staff. The Annual General Meeting is your chance to give advice and provide ideas. Refreshments will be served. presidentís report Another summer is flying by us! The good news is that you will now be able to review the The Connection and plan your activities for you and your family for the fall! As you will see we have many of the traditional activities for you to participate in plus a few new ones. With over 34,000 people in the catchment area, we have a very big job to try and make sure we offer programming that is relevant for all our residents. Over the past several months our Program Committee has worked very hard with the help of a class of students at U of M to meet with many members from our community and to then analyze the current programing we offer. We are excited about this major initiative and I know that as we begin to make changes and improvements over the months ahead we will be able to meet the needs of our broad community in new and creative ways. Stay tuned! If you have any specific suggestions please bring them to our attention. Over the winter and spring of 2012/2013 your Board of Directors has worked hard to look at what our Mission and Vision is for your Community Center. Many people spent many hours on this important initiative. As we move into the fall and winter of 2013/2014 we will now begin the important work of looking at building our strategic plan for the next 3 - 5 years.

Mission - Corydon Community Center provides facilities for accessible recreational opportunities to promote well-being and a sense of community in the neighborhood. Vision - To be recognized as Community Leaders in sport and recreation. We: • Strive for continuous improvement of facilities, program delivery and financial stability • Engage community through coaching, mentoring, leading and fundraising; and • Measure success through participation and performance outcomes. • As always we are constantly looking for volunteers to assist us. If you feel you want to get involved we would welcome the support. As we begin to build our Strategic Plan we know we will need help in many areas.

refunds

late registrations

Full refunds will be issued when a program is cancelled. A $20.00 administration fee applies to all refund requests other than program cancellation. Withdrawl from a program will be pro-rated and the issuing of a refund will be based on individual request specifics. For sessions of eight weeks or more, no refund will be given after the third week of classes. For sessions of less than eight weeks or conducted on a class-to-class basis, no refund will be given after the start of classes.

program information Answers to questions regarding programs should be directed to Abbie Bajon and questions regarding sports to Kathy Turner. Centre Staff will try to provide assistance with questions or concerns you have, so don't hesitate to call.

A late fee of $30.00 per registration will be charged effective September 14th. This is necessary due to the additional administration which occurs when registration is late. In some instances, teams have been formed, league fees paid and uniforms ordered. Our philosophy is such that anyone who wants to participate should be accommodated, but it must be recognized that there are extra costs incurred with late registrations and is not always possible.

Please register before the deadline to avoid late fees!!!!

Anyone living outside the official Corydon CC service area must register at their own community centre when sport league rules so dictate. When the sport or sport age group is not available at the home centre, written permission to transfer is required. This includes house league sports.

ALL PROGRAM FEES AND OFFERINGS AT CORYDON CC ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE 6

sports Please note the below policies that blanket all sports programs at Corydon Community Centre:

Sport Team Formations All teams are formed based on the number of registered players - if numbers warrant, 2 or 3 teams may be formed in one age group in certain sports. If teams are playing in the same division they will be as equally balanced as possible. If numbers are such that there are too many to be placed on one team but not enough for an additional team to be formed, then players will have to be transferred to the next community centre needing players. The method used to decide which players are to be transferred is: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Late Registrations Volunteers to transfer Players from outside Corydon catchment Lottery Any player registering late has no guarantee of a position on a Corydon CC Team.

Uniform Deposits Basketball $100 Hockey $200 Indoor Soccer $100 Ringette $200 *All participants will be required to leave a post-dated cheque dated for April 1st, 2014 with their team manager. If uniforms are not returned, this cheque will be cashed.

hockey 2013-14 will be the second year of online registration for hockey in our area (APHA - Assiniboine Park Hockey Association) during the month of August and start of September. Registration will be online directly with Hockey Canada's Database and new for this season payment will also be made online by Visa or MasterCard. We still need you in person to sign up for our volunteer duties, privacy documents, etc. (details to follow). The hockey program will again be utilizing the $100 volunteer bond per family. As an added bonus the fees have NOT increased this season! NEW ONLINE REGISTRATION LINK https://registration.hockeycanada.ca/Registration/?ID=944 There will still be some grandfathering allowed for kids 14+ from Crescentwood who wish to continue playing with their friends in Fort Garry, they must however register at Corydon CC and be transferred or register directly with the Fort Garry Twins AA organization. As a reminder, for traveling hockey, it is our goal at Corydon CC and within the APHA to have uniformity with respect to tryouts, team practices and ice schedules. The APHA has adopted the Hockey Handbook as a guide for ALL teams within the APHA to follow for players, coaches, managers and parents. The hockey handbook can be viewed on the APHA website www.aphamb.ca. Remember this is a reference guide not gospel.

corydon house league

For team formations, every effort is made to ensure Corydon CC and all clubs in the APHA follow a fair and equitable process. Remember you must register to tryout. If you choose to play in another program after the number of teams in each category has been formed, we will only refund half your money. This reason is simple; once the number of teams has been formed we are committed to those numbers so any drop in players is catastrophic. The traveling program is "grass roots" hockey, where participation, fair play and competitiveness are always the goal. Corydon CC shares the belief of equal playing time, playing in a respectful manner and having fun. Parents should also be respectful of the enormous amount of time and energy our coaches/managers dedicate both on & off the ice to run a successful team. If you haven't volunteered in the past few years with a team please help out this year! Finally I would ask that everyone be mindful that the referees are young and developing and learning the game too. Without our current crop of returning referees we would not be able to play any games. I trust that you will give them the respect and consideration they deserve as if they were your own child! Let's play some hockey!

aaa, aa or high school hockey

(age 5-6)

Corydon CC runs an in-house league exclusively at River Heights Arena. The number of players is restricted to manageable numbers (max of 12-13 players per team). Starting in late September, an initiation program of 8 sessions will be held to assist the players with some basic skills. The season consists of 18 indoor games. Teams will practice once and sometimes twice a week, typically outdoors. We do encourage our teams to participate outside the club in tournaments and exhibition games to prepare the players for traveling hockey and have the added experience of playing new teams. When we assign teams, our top priority is equal skill level. We TRY to keep friends together, but there is NO guarantee this can be done. We only adjust for balance, not because a player wants to be with their friends. It is also HIGHLY recommended that young skaters enroll in a Learn to Skate program. This league is based on a non-competitive environment and good sportsmanship.

apha house league

(age 7-8)

Corydon CC participates in our area association house league with five other APHA (Assiniboine Park Hockey Association) community centres. Each of the community centres form teams based on their registration numbers. The season consists of 18-20 indoor games starting in November and winding up in February. Teams will play 1-2 games per week and will practice once or sometimes twice per week. The season finishes off with double knock out playoffs. The league is designed to focus on skill development and participation. Boys and girls are welcome. The registration fees include an 8 session Initiation Program for all participants (female novice is also included in the initiation program). This program will be run over 3-4 weekends starting in late September prior to the start of the season. The program is geared towards kids of all skill levels.

Players trying for AAA, AA or High School must also register for Corydon CC hockey to prevent problems related to having a place to play if the player does not make the AAA, AA or High School team. Your online registration or cheque fee payment will be returned or destroyed, as per your instructions, in the event of the player making the team. Players must be registered with Corydon CC prior to registering with the High School, Rangers or Monarchs. All travelling team players must register at their home community centre. Hockey Winnipeg rules regarding transfers will be strictly enforced. In the event of an APHA team formation involving two or more community centres, no transfers are required. Rangers registration will be held on Wednesday August 28th at the Roblin Park CC from 7 - 9 pm For AAA visit www.winnipegaaa.com For AA visit www.apharangershockey.ca

Registration fees are based on the cost of providing the program - ice costs, referees, timekeepers, player insurance, league fees and equipment/jersey replacement. Late fee: $30.00 per registration begins September 14th There are two fee components in hockey: 1) the registration fee, payable to the community centre 2) the ice draft fee, payable to the team manager. The ice draft fee includes the cost of regularly scheduled practice ice. While the amount is the same per team, you can typically expect to pay $200-$250 per player (depending upon how many players per team) for the year. Team managers collect half this fee in October and the remainder in January.

female Are you a girl who loves to skate and play team sports? There is a hockey team for you!! The APHA (Assiniboine Park Hockey Association) provides girls of all ages with a place to experience the great Canadian game of hockey. We have a competitive tiered program for all ages from Novice (8 and under) through Midget, including AA teams. APHA female teams are created on an area wide basis (our area includes Phoenix, Westdale, Roblin Park, Varsity View, and Corydon) and play out of one home rink that will be determined after tryouts, which are held near the end of September. All levels of skill are welcome - new female players of all ages take up this fun sport every year! New players are encouraged to also enrol in a Learn to Skate program, if skating skills need a little work. Novice girls (8 & under) also attend the IP program (8 weeks of skills) at River Heights Arena in October. Please note for the 2013/14 season, if your daughter does not wish to play A1 hockey, you have the option to declare A2 at the time of registration and we will automatically place her on the A2 team for her age category.

corydon heritage ice federation Corydon Heritage Ice Federation is an 'in house' non contact hockey program emphasizing fun and skill development and is not affiliated with any hockey association. This program consists of a 20 week indoor ice schedule and is set up in age groups (groupings may need to be adjusted due to registration numbers, but generally are 9-11, 12-14 and 15-17). All age groups will have a 2 week evaluation/ team formation camp followed by an 18 game schedule. Teams are picked based on an informal skill evaluation with the objective of having balanced teams. Games are supervised by qualified referees, there is no intentional body contact and certain rules apply to further ensure that teams are evenly matched. Games are played at the River Heights Site on Saturdays beginning in October. This year our teams will be called the Cardinals, Explorers, Grizzlies and Sabres in recognition of our rich history. ringette ATTENTION: RINGETTE FAMILIES Although the Corydon CC registration period is September 3-13, please register your ringette player by September 7th. What Is Ringette?

developed into a true Sport for Life, involving all participants of all ages and both genders. In Manitoba, Ringette is played from the age of 5 through to Senior Ladies and at all levels from House League to AA Elite Players who compete for national championships. There are also five university teams in Manitoba. While the majority of Ringette players are girls, boys are welcome up to age 12.

Ringette is a fast-paced team sport played on ice with a ring, stick and full protective equipment. A game consists of two 20-minute periods, taking an hour to complete.

Team Formation Players at any age group may be based at any community centre in our district, which is Assiniboine Park Fort Garry Ringette Association (APFG). (www.apfgringette.ca)

Try Ringette for free!

Ringette 4 U (formerly Bunnies) - This is a fantastic new 3 stage program for our younger players. It teaches ringette fundamentals and skating skills by trained instructors. All players at this level will attend an assessment skate and then placed at an appropriate level. There are a total of 3 assessments throughout the season and the children will move through the levels as they progress. The program features a total of 32 ice times, with a minimum of 16 games, dependant on the level of play. See the website www.ringette4u.ca for more details. An information Session will be held on the new program on Wednesday, September 4th at 6:30pm at the River Heights Arena. New and returning players are welcome!

A great way to see if Ringette is the sport for you is to attend a Come Try Ringette event. Check out a date near you at www.cometryringette.com

What Makes Ringette Unique? Ringette encourages the rapid development of skating skills, and demands that athletes apply concepts of teamwork and game strategy to succeed, in particular: • Players must pass the ring over the blue line to a teammate every time - promoting the involvement of all players. • Skill, speed and strategy are what score goals - intentional and aggressive body contact is forbidden. • Success depends on how well you and your teammates work together as only three players may attack or defend around the net. Less crowding gives the skilled player space and reduces the risk of injury. • Only the goaltender is allowed in the crease. Featuring a bigger crease, scoring demands real skill. • At the advanced levels, a team has 30 seconds from the time they gain possession of the ring to take a shot on goal.

Who Plays Ringette? Originally invented to offer girls a team ice sport, Ringette has

U10, U12, U14 (formerly Novice, Petite, Tween) - There are mandatory assessments for all players in these age categories. Assessments will assist in determining athlete's development level and placing her/him on a team that offers the best opportunity for a positive ringette experience. These groups will have 3 assessment skates in late September/early October. Once they are completed, players will be placed on teams balanced on likeness of skill level. APFG hosts these sessions, but all evaluations are done by an outside party. U16, U19 (formerly Junior, Belles) - Try outs in these categories will remain optional for an "A" team placement.

The key elements of the program are the modifications that have been introduced to make it more conducive to the physical development of junior participants. These modifications include: • A lighter ball. • A lower net - 2 meters high. • A smaller court - approximately 13 meters by 6.5 meters. • Fewer players on the court to encourage greater participation.

adult/senior programs strength training

beginner yoga

(55+)

In the 1990's research on strength training for older adults was explored. Experts now recommend that older adults do strength training to maintain their strength, muscle mass and balance. Inactive adults have increased risk of disability, falls and diseases such as diabetes. Find out the benefits by joining this program that will help make you stronger using our exercise equipment and free weights. There are a few reasons that prevent older adults from taking part in strength training so all participants are requested to meet with their family physician to evaluate their readiness for this activity.

This is a class designed for newbie yogi/yoginis and those with some experience. Learn the traditional Sun Salutations and many other yoga asanas (positions). Develop strength, increase flexibility, decrease stress and improve posture and over all well being. Wear comfy clothes, bring your own mat and an open mind!

The Kelvin Clippers have been fixtures at the River Heights Arena since 1996, and unless you are an early riser you are not likely to catch one of their workouts. The team whose dressing room is built into the RH arena complex, does most of it's practicing before class at around 7:30 a.m. This regimen, although unpopular with teenagers, requires dedication and commitment which is obvious by the intensity of their practices. The team plays in the "A" (Platinum) division of the Winnipeg High School Hockey League, and has consistently remained at that level of competition. Full statistical information is available on the website: http://www.whshl.com/ High School hockey in Manitoba is quickly becoming the preferred choice for players and parents because of its focus on academics, the ability to play with school mates before local crowds, and preferred ice times. The WHSHL plays the majority of its games between 4 and 6 p.m. on weekdays, which leaves the weekends free for work and school assignments. The team appreciates all the support it receives from the staff and the community at large. Kelvin Boys play their home games most Wednesdays at 4:15 and the Kelvin girls play most Mondays at 4:00. Come on down to the home of the Clippers, support our local high school teams and watch some fast-paced action. 28
