A history of Cammell Laird 1907 FC Cammell Laird 1907 FC can trace its history back to 1899 when a team from the Upper Boilers Shop of Laird Bros played in Birkenhead Park, before turning to the rugby code. It was not until June 1907 that the Cammell Laird Institute AFC was established, with its first fixture taking place on 2nd September 1907 against Tranmere Rovers, finishing 9th in the West Cheshire League in their inaugural season (1907/08). In the early years the club played at a number of grounds and won their first trophy (the Shipley Cup) in April 1921, before in the summer of 1922 they moved to St Peters Road (which still remains their current home) as Kirklands FC. They disbanded in 1939 but reformed in 1946. The club had their most successful period during the 1970's and 80's winning the West Cheshire League on a regular basis. 1994/5 saw the club reach the FA Vase quarter final before losing to Arlesey Town. The early part of the new millennium saw the club reach new heights. They started the rise through the pyramid, making history by becoming the first club to win the championship of the second and first divisions of the North West Counties League, which they achieved in 2004/05 and then 2005/06. In the same year at that first division triumph, the club reached the FA Vase semi final (losing to eventual winners Nantwich Town) and two years later, the club gained promotion to the Unibond Premier League. However, they were relegated after just one season due to ground grading. Having fought relegation battles successfully, the club finished bottom of the Evo Stik North in 2011/12, but were reprieved, and bounced back the following season by finishing league runners up before losing on penalties in the play off final against Trafford. Last season saw the club finish 11th but the decision was taken by the club to resign from the Evo Stik NPL due to ownership issues and form a new club: Cammell Laird 1907 FC. The new club was formed on 28th May 2014.

LAIRDS in this competition When Lairds decided to drop down to the North West Counties Football League Division One in the summer, they did so knowing that they would be playing at this level for only the second time in their history. The last time was in 2004/05 and it was probably the most successful season in the club’s history, so let’s hope for a repeat this season! After playing in the West Cheshire League since 1948-49 no one could have predicted how successful that season would be. Lairds comfortably won the title, scoring 142 league goals. That remains a record for this division (which only Nelson last season have come close to breaking). At the time it was a record for the NWCFL as a whole, and only FC United of Manchester’s tally of 157 goals in the Premier Division of 06/07 have beaten that since. During 04/05 Lairds scored 4 or more goals in a game on an incredible 23 occasions out of a possible 36. This helped them finish 10 points clear of nearest rivals Silsden. There were that many standout results that it would be impossible to fit them all on just this space, so here is a selection: 

Saturday 18th December 2004—LAIRDS 8-1 Flixton, and Monday 2nd May 2005—Flixton 0-6 LAIRDS. These results were against a team who had a goal difference of just –7 that season, which is not bad for a team that finished 2nd from bottom.

Cheadle Town were a mid-table team that season, not that you would have known that when they played Lairds: Tuesday 1st March 2005—LAIRDS 7-1 Cheadle Town The return was an even better result: Wednesday 20th April 2005—Cheadle Town 1-9 LAIRDS.

Blackpool Mechanics finished just above Cheadle in 10th place, but they must have been wishing that they could never play Lairds again! Tuesday 12th October 2004—LAIRDS 8-1 Blackpool Mechanics Tuesday 30th November 2004—Blackpool Mechanics 0-5 LAIRDS

In Lairds fixture at this level, they drew 1-1 away to Padiham. However, for the fixture at Lairds, there was only one team in the game: Saturday 19th February 2005—LAIRDS 6-0 Padiham. Perhaps it should be pointed out that our opponents finished just two places outside a promotion place.

Lairds won the title with just 3 defeats in the league, 2 of which were against 2nd placed Silsden, and a goal difference of 108.

To Be FRANK Frank Games gives a view from the boardroom A very warm welcome to the Directors, Committee, Players and Officials of Cheadle Town and can I take this opportunity to wish them a successful season. It was a disappointing result on Tuesday as we exited the Cheshire Cup to Congleton Town after extra time, however this means we have to focus on the league and as we enter the home straight we need to keep winning to keep the pressure up on Atherton Colls and hope the volume of matches proves too much for them. Our visitors today will provide a difficult game for us as they did when we met in November when we edged the game 4-3. Can I remind you of some dates for your diary. First off we are hosting a race night on Friday 27th February in the Social Club, if you want to buy a horse, be a jockey or sponsor a race then please see Toddy. The Hotpot Supper is on Thursday 2nd April (its Good Friday the next day so a day off for most of us) our guests will be former Everton and Liverpool legend David Johnson and top comedian Willie Miller. Tickets available from the Social Club at ÂŁ25. Finally Saturday 2nd May: we will host our presentation night in the social club. Finally enjoy your visit to Cammell Laird 1907 and hopefully you will come again, have a safe journey home.

LAIRDS WELCOME…

CHEADLE TOWN THE BASICS Established: 1961 Stadium: Park Road Stadium Nickname: Town

History Cheadle Town was formed in 1961 as Grasmere Rovers playing in the Manchester & District Sunday Football League in their Under-16s Division. As the team developed the Under-21 Championship was won in 1968, followed by the Premier Division title two years later. In 1972 the club made the significant decision to play their football on Saturdays and joined the Manchester Football League. Success on the playing field coincided with the arrival of Albert Pike as manager in 1978. In Albert’s first full season he led the team to a terrific double of First Division Champions and Manchester Amateur Cup Winners; this was the prelude to even more success as the club won both the Manchester & Derbyshire F.A. Cups. Grasmere Rovers moved into their own ground at Park Road Stadium in 1982 and, a year later, changed their name to Cheadle Town when they also joined the North West Counties Football League. Membership has mainly been in the Second Division but in 1996 the club was promoted to the First Division. Sadly, relegation back to the second tier occurred in 2001, a position they still occupy in the now-named First Division. Park Road Stadium has a fine history with, initially, Cheadle Rovers being the owners. On their demise Manchester City used it as their training ground. Portugal, along with Eusebio trained there during the 1966 World Cup and, in 1993, the world-famous Brazilian player, Jairzinho, hosted a Soccer School for Cheadle Town. Floodlights were installed in 1995 and Manchester United provided the opposition for the official ‘switchon’ when, on a memorable evening, Town beat United’s youngsters 3-2 in front of almost 2,000 fans.

Due to the huge interest in the game Town officials moved the fixture to Stockport County’s Edgeley Park, and they were rewarded with a bumper 3,227 attendance that witnessed a pulsating 3-3 draw. The club is famous for its legendry foreign tours, having played 96 games in 30 different countries in front of over 312,000 fans and scoring 111 goals. Playing under their tour name, Manchester AFC, they have played against SEVEN national sides and once played in front of 65,000 people in Mexico City’s world-famous Aztec Stadium. Their epic journeys have taken them just over 210,000 miles all over the world. Alfredo di Stefano, Ronnie Biggs, Brazilian superstar Jairzinho and Rajiv Ghandi have all met the touring side as exotic locations such as Cannes, Acapulco, Rio de Janeiro, the Bahamas and Phuket have mixed with slightly less romantic places like Dar es Salaam, Haiti and Guangzhou in China. The club celebrated its 50th birthday in 2011 and, if the next 50 years are anything like the first, then there is a lot of excitement to come. Over the past four of five seasons, Town have had solid upper-mid table finishes: in 10/11 they finished 10th, 8th in 11/12, 7th in 12/13 and last season, finished in 11th place. Also, in 2012-13, they reached the semi-finals of the League Challenge Cup, losing on penalties to eventual winners Runcorn Linnets.

FIVE A SIDE TEAM IF TOWN DID 5 A SIDE, THEIR TEAM MIGHT BE... Stephen Piggott— A hugely experienced 36 year old goalkeeper, who counts Stone Dominoes amongst his previous clubs. On the opening day of the season, Piggott was given man of the match in the 2-1 win at Oldham Boro, and his excellent record has been a key factor in their play-off push. He has kept three clean sheets in his last five games, so today will not be easy for our strikers.

Luke Pearson—A 24 year old defender, he is a huge player in this talented Town team. Pearson’s impressive performances last season saw him given Player of the Year, and he has continued those this season; in doing so, he has helped Cheadle to 9 wins. He has found the back of the net twice this season: a penalty against Wigan Robin Park showed his composure , whilst he also scored the only goal of a real 6 pointer against Daisy Hill back in January.

Callum Jones—The 19 year old has a promising future ahead of him, and has impressed throughout this season. Jones can play anywhere across the defence, and his talent was recognized by the NWCFL when he won Division One player of the month in November. He has also managed to find the net twice this season (against Rochdale Town and Wigan Robin Park). Jones is a player who clearly has the drive and the desire to do well, and he is normally first to every game.

Nathan Neequaye— Neequaye is a key player in the Cheadle team and there aren’t many better in this division. He joined Cheadle late last season, and has been nothing short of a revelation. He is an all-round player—the complete striker who is more than just goals. With 19 goals to his name, he is a real threat for our defence this afternoon. His form in October and November was nothing short of incredible, as he scored 12 goals in 9 games. His form in October saw him awarded Division One player of the month.

8

James Horan—Lairds know all about Horan from the meeting between the sides at Park Road earlier in the season— he scored twice as Cheadle were unlucky to get nothing out of the game. The striker has scored eight times this season, making him Town’s second top scorer. That includes their first goal of the season in a 2-1 win at Oldham Boro. Though he hasn’t scored in 2015, ‘form is temporary but class is permanent’.

OPPOSITION IN FOCUS Last season, Town were forced to settle for a solid 11th placed finish, with long-serving manager Steve Brokenbrow resigning in December due to work commitments. Brokenbrow left the incoming Terry Hincks with a side capable of beating most teams on their day, and Hincks kept things ticking over in order for them to have a real go at a finish higher up the table this season. He was able to seen Cheadle to good wins over the likes of Rochdale Town, whilst using his extensive knowledge of players to secure the services of Nathan Neequaye, who has been busy tearing defences apart this season. One of the things that Cheadle needed to improve is their record away from home against top of the table sides, let’s see if they will succeed… Cheadle Town currently look a very strong bet for the play-offs if they can continue their recent form. They started slowly, with just two wins in their first seven games. They also had a poor run in October/start of November—despite the remarkable form of Nathan Neequaye, Town lost five out of seven in the league, including a 3-0 defeat at home to Irlam and a 4-3 loss at home to Lairds, but Neequaye scored nine times in that run. However, an 8-1 win at home to Wigan Robin Park ignited their season, and now they are serious top 6 contenders. After that win, they defeated Northwich Flixton Villa (who were on a real high after handing Colls a first defeat of the season on the Wednesday), and have lost just twice since then. They have also beaten Rochdale Town, Daisy Hill and Wigan RP again, so will be disappointed with defeats at home to Eccleshall and Ashton Town. Also in that run, Town have improved defensively, providing a solid base from which to kick on, and also reducing the burden on Nathan Neequaye and James Horan up front. They kept three successive clean sheets against Wigan RP, Daisy Hill and Holker OB, and took seven points from those three games, even though Horan wasn’t on the score sheet in either of them. Cheadle’s squad is clearly very strong. In Callum Jones, they have a very bright 19 year old talent, whilst Luke Pearson and Joseph Armstrong are both very reliable defenders. Goals are guaranteed from midfield through the likes of Ashley Armstrong, Luke Hincks, Niall Cannon and Thabiso Magida. A strong spine is completed by Neequaye and Horan up front, who have scored 27 goals between them this season. The factor that may swing the balance in Town’s favour in the top 6 challenge is that seven of their final ten games are at Park Road Stadium. Therefore, if they can sustain the run of form that currently sees them in 7th place in the form table, they stand a good chance of extending their season beyond 25th April. Two draws recently at home to Holker Old Boys and away to AFC Darwen shows that they are capable of competing with their fellow top 6 challengers, so if they can get one of those elusive play-off positions, they may fancy their chances of gaining promotion at the end of it.

Manager Terry Hincks was appointed as Cheadle Town manager in December 2013 following the resignation of Steve Brokenbrow, who was in charge for the previous five years. Hincks is best known for managing the Glossop North End side that reached the FA Vase final in 2009 at Wembley. His son, Luke, plays for Cheadle, and has scored four times this season. Hincks has a huge amount of experience at this level, allowing him to make several excellent signings, not least Nathan Neequaye at the end of last season. He is helped by Antony Trucca Snr, Gareth Summers and Chris Woods, and with their guidance, Cheadle are likely to continue a run that has seen them quietly climb to the cusp of the play-offs, and perhaps find themselves in the Premier Division next season...

MACCA’S Message Manager Paul McNally shares his thoughts I would like to start today's notes by extending a very warm welcome to all staff, players and representatives of Cheadle Town. The last time we both played it was a close game with us emerging victorious with a scoreline of 4-3, we know today will be a similar test of our promotion credentials. Tuesday night’s Cheshire cup game provided us with a end to end game and unfortunately for us it was not meant to be. Even in defeat we still had plenty of positives to take out of the game: Danny Dixon and Josh Hughes gave good accounts of themselves stepping up into the 1st team and we looked very fluent attacking with these two players in our team. Extra time proved too much for my men though and towards the end the lads looked like the walking dead and Congleton’s substitutes’ fresh legs ultimately won them the game. We wish them all the best in the next round and we move forward! After the game on Tuesday I completed the signing of Tom Owens from Marine he will go straight into the squad for today's game and I feel he could be a player that improves our team immediately, he can play in a couple of positions and his versatility will be valuable. Welcome to Lairds Tom!

Thanks

Macca Paul McNally, First Team Manager

LAIRDS LOG LAIRDS TOO GOOD FOR DAISY HILL Lairds end up 5-0 victors against the promotion contenders. Manager Paul McNally was forced into two changes from the side that beat Winsford United on the Tuesday evening: Kyle Jones and Chris McGann made their first starts for 1907, replacing Steve Ferrigan and Joe Evans. The first chance went the way of Lairds, but Speed’s effort was a tame one and was blocked by Daisy Hill captain Craig Naylor. However, Lairds took the lead in the 10th minute through Joe Holt. It was Speed who tied up the Lairds number 11 to curl his effort into the bottom left hand corner from just outside the area—Ryan Pugh in the Daisy Hill goal was left disappointed with his effort to keep the ball out. Lairds continued to control the match, Adam Hughes clipping the post from outside the area. Cairns then had a great chance to double Lairds’ lead, but crashed his shot against the bar from inside the area. Not long after, it required some heroic defending to prevent Lairds scoring again. First, Chris McGann turned his marker and forced an excellent save from Ryan Pugh. The ball rebounded for Adam Hughes, who saw his effort blocked off the line, and Hughes’ second rebound was well saved from Pugh. Cairns and Holt then found themselves with an excellent opening but a misunderstanding meant that the DH defence cleared. Cairns found himself in on goal again, Pugh came outside his area and fouled Cairns, which resulted in a yellow card for the DH keeper, and left Cairns in serious pain. From the resulting free-kick, Foy’s effort looped off the bar, and Gibiluru was on hand first to give himself the simplest of tasks to head home, putting Lairds 2-0 up. In the next attack, Cairns terrifically turned his marker, but his effort crashed off the near post. Lairds continued to carve open their opponents, Hughes’ effort blocked by his own captain, and Speed seeing his effort tipped over. Tosney’s header from Foy’s cross was well-saved, before Cairns sent a great

for Paul Foy, and then Holt taken off in favour of Dylan Vassallo. Vassallo’s ball into the box resulted in a scramble, but the DH defence was able to clear. Then Daisy Hill might have got the goal that their second half performance arguably deserved, but first Igenoza’s effort was well saved, then Craig Farnworth fired the rebound well over. Instead it was to be Lairds who got the final goal. Paul Foy was fouled 25 yards from goal, chance wide of the post on the rebound. and the free kick taken by namesake FranCairns was able to beat everyone in his ny was superb, curling straight into the way, before rounding the goalkeeper, but top left hand corner. LAIRDS GET THE BETTER OF NFV In the fourth meeting between the sides this season, Lairds were able to get three valuable points in real battle Lairds had bad memories of Valley Road from earlier in the season—it is the only ground at which Lairds have lost on the road, Villa winning 4-2 earlier in the season in the Reusch First Division Cup. However, Lairds beat Villa 3-1 in January, and Paul McNally brought in Steve Ferrigan, James Thomas and Jamie Henders for Kyle Jones, Chris McGann and the injured Craig Cairns. Lairds started the game well, Henders chesting the ball down to bring it under control, then seeing his shot on the turn well saved by the Villa goalkeeper. The keeper was in action again as the ball dropped for Paul Speed, but the keeper held it well. Gibiluru’s effort from outside the area was well saved. Villa’s first chance was drilled well over from outside the area. Then, after a good move involving Thomas and Couch, Lairds won a corner. ‘Smiler’ delivered and there was a goalmouth scramble which resulted in head injuries to three players, including Adam Hughes for Lairds. From ‘Smiler’s’ next teasing corner, Lairds were able to take the lead. The inswinger was perfect for Steve Ferrigan to power his diving header in off the bar, meaning that Lairds scored the first goal for the first time in their four meetings with NFV. Holt was taken off due to injury, Dylan Vassallo replacing him. Villa showed good trickery on the left, feeding their #10, and Foy could only foul the Villa man to prevent him advancing on goal. Langley was then booked for dissent. Speed’s effort from the edge of the box was well held by the goalkeeper, before one of the key moments in the game. Villa’s #7 was sent off for violent conduct against Speed, with the Lairds’ man’s retaliation leaving the referee with little choice but to send him off as well. Chris

It required a great intervention from #5 to prevent Paul Foy having a real chance after his impressive trickery before Gibiluru was booked for Lairds. Vassallo’s free-kick deflected off the wall, and was well saved by the wrong-footed NFV goalkeeper, then Gibiluru’s effort from just outside the area was pushed wide. Lairds had to survive one final scare, as McGann was also booked for encroaching Villa won a free-kick in a good position. onto the pitch, which left Paul McNally Fortunately, #3’s free-kick was well furious with McGann. AROUND THE GROUNDS A couple of stories from around the NWCFL. Holker Old Boys Holker Old Boys' hopes of cup glory were ended by a 3-0 defeat by Chorley in the Lancashire FA Challenge Trophy semi-final at the County Ground in Leyland. A goal down after five minutes, Holker battled valiantly, but struggled to cope with the pace and intensity of a Chorley side that sit 87 places above them in the Non-League Pyramid. Holker manager Gary Fawcett had no complaints afterwards about the result: "They are a quality side who knocked it around really well and put us under a lot of pressure. I think we gave them a little too much respect, and if you give a side like that time on the ball they will punish you …. we've done really well to get this far, we've beaten some good sides, and losing 3-0 is no disgrace against a side like them.” Steve Ferrigan’s goal at Northwich Flixton Villa Steve Ferrigan chose the perfect time to score his second goal of the season. The only goal of the game was the 2000th league goal this season. Congratulations to Steve! Today’s Opponents: Cheadle Town Thabiso Magida's 70th minute equaliser for Cheadle Town in the 2-2 draw at AFC Darwen was Town's 1700th League goal.

BURKE’S Banter The editor provides his views Welcome to the MBS Stadium for today’s game against Cheadle Town. In particular, we welcome the directors, players, staff and supporters who have made the journey from Greater Manchester. We have played two games since my last set of notes, one was a win on the road, the other a defeat at home. Last Saturday, we went to Valley Road to play Northwich Flixton Villa in the league. It was our fourth meeting with NFV this season, so we were expecting a real battle and knew that we would have to play well to get the three points, because Villa have the capacity in their team to punish us. Steve Ferrigan’s excellent header put us ahead in the first half, and from then on the result never really looked in doubt. After both teams had a man sent off just before halftime, it was a game of few chances, and we did what we had to do to grind out the result without being at our best. That was not easy considering that several players picked up knocks in the game, which I suppose is to be expected when you have 22 players who fight for every ball. On Tuesday night, we entertained Congleton Town in the Cheshire Senior Cup. Unfortunately, I was laid up with illness so unable to attend the game—talk about the wrong day to be ill! From what I heard, we had to make several changes to our squad and in the end that took its toll on the team. Tom Reilly gave us the lead, but we were playing quality opposition who were able to pick us off in extra time. It seemed like there wasn’t an awful lot between the sides, but they took their chances, whilst we squandered ours. Today provides another test for us, as we face a Cheadle Town side unbeaten in 2015 and right in the mix for the play -offs. They are a very well organised side, proved by the fact they have kept clean sheets in 3 of their 5 games since the turn of the year. If you can keep clean sheets, and you have someone as prolific as 19 goal man Nathan Neequaye up front, then you are bound to be a threat. We saw what a quality side they were back in November, when we narrowly won 4-3 at Park Road, and I have no doubt that they will provide a similar test today. We are top of the league, and as long as we are winning our games, it puts all the pressure on Colls to win theirs in the title race. I thought Frank was spot on in his notes when he said that we have to hope that the volume of games takes its toll on them (they are still in three cup competitions, whilst we just have the league to focus on). After today, we have three home games left, and only two more programmes to do for me. Hopefully, we’ll have some good days out in our remaining seven away games, and maybe even celebrate promotion or a title at one of them! Finally, it’s just been pointed out to me that I got my twitter username wrong in the Congleton issue. It is actually: @pburke_CL1907, not as I stated, 907. We thank you for your support this afternoon, enjoy the game and have a safe journey home!
