WELCOME TO THE WEST MIDLANDS

Located in the beating heart of the UK, this was the cradle of the world’s first industrial revolution; kickstarting a tradition of innovation that remains ingrained across our region today. This is a place of pioneers, where football league, lawn tennis, rugby union, and the world’s first ever cricket world cup all began.

In recent decades, the region has reinvented itself from an industrial heartland to a leading business, cultural and major events destination that creates truly unforgettable experiences. Our three dynamic cities – Birmingham, Coventry and Wolverhampton – all boast incredible resources and amenities, and each offers a uniquely warm welcome. Birmingham, the city at our centre, is one of the most accessible, fastest growing and most lively cities in the UK. It’s also one of the youngest in Europe with 32% of the population under 25. Among our 4.7 million strong population, you’ll discover vibrant cultures mixing and melting together, with people of over 190 nationalities calling it home.

Birmingham and the West Midlands region has played host to some of the largest global sporting events over recent decades including the Athletics World Championships, the Ryder Cup and Gymnastics World Cup.

Our region’s dynamic and innovative spirit was showcased to the globe during the recent Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games which brought over 5 million people to the city and saw 1.5 billion people tuning in globally. But this was just the beginning. Looking to the future, we have an exciting pipeline of events that are set to further cement our status as a leading international host of major sporting events.

The success of the Games has provided the springboard for a golden decade of major sporting events in Birmingham and the West Midlands, with new and improved facilities across the region providing the ideal home for truly world-class events.

We can’t wait to welcome you.

OUR VISION

Major sporting events are central to the growth of the visitor economy in our region, forecast to increase by almost £1.2bn by 2029. This creates a genuinely exciting opportunity to accelerate our desire to create a great place to visit and a healthier, happier, more prosperous region.

We already have a vibrant sporting sector with world class venues, facilities, people skills and natural assets that are as good as anywhere in the UK, if not the world. Our collective ambition has put the region at the forefront of new and emerging sectors like e-sports, backed by local partners with a real desire to see collaborative, purpose driven investment.

And the benefits go way beyond sport itself, providing the chance to create new commercial assets and properties of our own and build capacity in the wider supply chains and events sectors.

Major sporting events are recognised as important by many major stakeholders; central government, as part of the social and economic recovery from Covid; UK Sport as part of their ambition to achieve Olympic success; Sport England, seeing the opportunity to promote physical activity and sport amongst the most inactive people and communities. With DCMS endorsing our ambitions, the stars are aligning.

OUR VISION:

Our region will be known across the global sports industry as a leading region for hosting Major Sporting Events, maximising the social and economic benefits by working side by side with public, private and voluntary sectors.

WHAT IS A MAJOR SPORTING EVENT?

Sporting events of national and international significance which focus the eyes of the world onto our region and draw new visitors to our cities, towns and villages, building a region where our citizens, businesses and communities thrive.

OUR VALUES:

How we behave, work and make decisions will be guided by our values.

• Welcoming

• Youthful

• Innovative

• Diverse

WE AIM TO:

• Inclusive

• Collaborative

• Sustainable

• Elevate and enhance the status of the West Midlands nationally and globally as a host of great sporting events

• Secure a minimum of 8 major events by 2027

• Grow the visitor economy in our region: already forecast to increase by almost £1.2bn by 2029, major sporting events only add to our appeal as a great place to visit

BIRMINGHAM AND THE WEST MIDLANDS 8

The Business and Tourism Programme (BATP) was developed alongside the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games to capitalise on the associated economic opportunities. The £24m programme helped to create a long-term legacy by boosting perceptions of the West Midlands as a world-class destination for trade, investment and tourism.

Attracting and hosting major sporting events formed a significant component of the programme, establishing and embedding a Major Sporting Events team within the West Midlands Growth Company, a Regional Advisory Group and a detailed delivery plan.

Major sporting events continue to be central to West Midlands Growth Company’s Global West Midlands strategy, working to enhance the profile and reputation of the region, create jobs, facilitate regeneration and sustain vibrant visitor destinations. A £6m major events fund, drawing on Commonwealth Games legacy funding, provides financial backing for our ambitious plans.

A PROUD SPORTING HISTORY AND HERITAGE

We’re a bit obsessed with sport in the West Midlands (which is probably why so many sports began right here). Our football teams – including Coventry City, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Aston Villa, Birmingham City, West Bromwich Albion and Walsall – are all followed intensely and passionately.

Cricket enthusiasts are equally well-served, with county, one-day, test and international cricket being regularly hosted at Birmingham’s legendary Edgbaston Stadium.

Golf is a very big deal in these parts too. We’ve two championship golf courses on our doorstep, and we’re home to the UK’s Professional Golfers Association. The Ryder Cup is a regular visitor, as is the PGA European Tour, the British Masters, and the English Open.

We’re also one of the few places in the UK where you can see top international athletics (including the Wanda Diamond League) and we host WTA tennis, world championship snooker, international badminton, professional boxing, horseracing, and plenty more. Just think of a spectator sport and you can probably find it here in Birmingham and the West Midlands.

WHAT’S NEW AND WHAT’S NEXT?

We’re going far...

The West Midlands is constantly evolving. Over the past two decades, we’ve seen significant regeneration, development and investment completely transform our region. And we’re not stopping there.

This is one of the youngest areas in the UK, it’s one of the most diverse too. We’d argue it feels the most full of life. Opportunities arise as often as new buildings in our city’s ever-changing skyline, and Birmingham is at an exciting time in its history. We’ve kept hold of the pioneering spirit that powered our industrial past, but now we’re using it to fuel an even brighter future.

When you bring your sporting event here, you can soak up that electric energy, and your event can become part of that thrilling future.

HEART OF THE HIGH-SPEED RAIL NETWORK

As the state-of-the-art High Speed 2 rail line arrives in the West Midlands in the early 2030s, travel time to London will be cut in half to 38 minutes. The journey to your next event will be incredibly quick, and overwhelmingly enjoyable. Plus, we’ve put our green credentials into action with the new Curzon Street Station, which will be net zero carbon in operation and adopt the latest eco-friendly design.

CONNECTIONS ACROSS THE GLOBE

Incredible £500m expansion plans at Birmingham Airport include the creation of a larger departures lounge, new baggage sorting areas and improved arrivals for overseas visitors. Seeking to increase passenger numbers by 40% in the next decade, it’s fantastic news for sporting event organisers as getting athletes and spectators from across the globe into the city is becoming easier than ever.

ALEXANDER STADIUM UPGRADES

We’re always growing our stock of world-class sporting venues in the West Midlands. New state-ofthe-art facilities and the huge West Stand now in place at the redeveloped Alexander Stadium mean the vibrant Perry Barr venue can now comfortably welcome 18,000 spectators every day of the year. Plus, £700million investment in the local area is making this a go-to for visitors who want to take in the very best of Birmingham.

NEW PURPOSE-BUILT FACILITIES

Purpose-built for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, Sandwell Aquatics Centre hosted more medal events than any other location during the Games. Following the Games, the swimming and diving pool saw more leisure facilities added to make for a flexible, and endlessly impressive, sporting event venue.

20 20 BIRMINGHAM AND THE WEST MIDLANDS

EXPANSION OF EXISTING VENUE STOCK

Coventry Building Society Arena is expanding too. Following £6.3m investment, the already popular venue has seen its 6,000 sqm indoor arena completely renovated, its convention spaces brought up to date and a brand-new sports bar launched. The new south pavilion makes an extraordinary entrance to the now market-leading arena.

SUSTAINABILITY COMES HOME TO BIRMINGHAM

Birmingham Smithfield was at the heart of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, playing host to beach volleyball and basketball events before being reclaimed by the city. Following the Games, progress is now underway to make the Smithfield site the most sustainable quarter in the city thanks to a £1.9bn regeneration programme. The site will provide a lively cultural hub, a beautiful public park, integrated public transport and endless community facilities. That’s good news for the planet, and great news for eco-conscious visitors eager to explore our vibrant city.
