In this fourth work, Justo Dieguez, creator of the Keysi Fighting Method, focuses on the area of grabs and traps. We will see 10 technical sequences in which the grab, the trap, are the objective, although it will be treated as a consequence. At KEYSI we do not think beforehand about performing a grab, it is something that will be the consequence of a certain situation. In a risk situation, your senses connect you with your environment, you are pure instinct, auditory, visual and contact. This ability allows you to focus your concentration, recognize your surroundings and decide what actions to take. It is you with your mental capacity that makes everything a weapon, a wall, a corner, a step, etc. On the street, in a real situation, the rules don't work. With technique you are not going to achieve your goals. Technique is that bridge that will get you to the target, but it is not the target. In a risky situation, instinctive responsiveness has to prevail over technique. When you train with this mentality you know that a millisecond can be vital. You understand that you don't have the possibility to extend the time, that you can't play on your opponent's patience or ability to manipulate him. You understand that you are at a complete disadvantage, that your response must be explosive and that you have to get out of there.

met YosukeYamashita from the hands of my dear first Karate teacher, and at that time also of Oriental medicine, Miguel Angel EstablésElduque in 1979. Yamashita was already a legend at that time, but he was kind enough to attend and be part of the tribunal, along with my Master, in my first Karate exam for yellow belt. He stayed in seiza for the whole exam and only got up at the end, as if it was nothing, to give us two tips and a Maegeri. - "You know... karate do always stronger! Mas kime!" Executing Maegeri his Kiai lit up the whole room. That young Alfredo Tucci, who at the time didn't even know what awaited him as a Martial Arts editor, was simply enraptured by the experience. I had the pleasure and honor of meeting him on many occasions thereafter, some very private, when I held a Japanese dinner for him at the home of Sensei Michelangelo, and then many more, years later, already as director of the magazine Budo International. We often crossed paths at the Japanese restaurant in front of his gym, the mythical Donzoko, where I often went, because my Japanese cooking teacher Seishiro Funamitsu (better known as "boy"), was the head chef of the restaurant. His smile always illuminated our meeting, and his elegance, however, did not prevent us from transcending the charm of sincere joy and appreciation. He was undoubtedly a current of energy in both directions. Sensei was sparing with words, a lover of local bars, always with friends and students, where he reigned generous, naturally claiming for himself to be the just central figure of every encounter. When he was serious, he was imposing, and this, together with the fact that his Spanish was never very good, made it very difficult to know what was going on in his head at any given moment. But all this only increased his mystical aura, the charm of the sleeping dragon that, when awakened, terrified whoever was near. His long silences, accompanied by sentences adorned with, never beyond an infinitive, were Zen gifts for the ears of his students, who thoughtfully nodded many times without having understood, but it did not matter, because such was the strength of his presence, the brilliance of his charm. He always maintained that charisma, even at times, making decisions that few people understood, closer to the code of bushido, than to the Spain of the late twentieth century. He lived in his own law, no doubt, and the aura and the spell of a Japan of other eras, always accompanied him, wherever he went. His passage through this world left a deep mark on many people, his students, his friends, his admirers, we will always remember him with special affection; that is why I join this more than deserved tribute, bringing him on the cover once again, and showing some unpublished photos that he kept of some of our meetings. To the initial idea of Sensei Salvador Herraiz, more people have been incorporated; they are not all who are, but they are all who are. Thank you Sensei for all that you brought to our lives; may your spirit find peace and light.

is deep knowledge of the art, which together with his strong personality and unique character, accompanied by that incredible charisma that the Master possessed, made receiving his teachings a real privilege and honor. I can add little to what is not already known about Master Yamashita; incredible martial artist, and a unique person. A real wonder. With a broad vision of the art, and within all fields, we can not forget from his exhibitions on television, to his support for an Olympic Karate, do not forget that he was "sporting grandfather" of our Olympic champions Sandra Sanchez and Damian Quintero. A great loss without a doubt, but with a magnificent legacy. The National Karate can be proud to have had the great figure of Master Yosuke Yamashita. Master, we miss you, but we will follow your path, the path of Karate Do.

My meeting with Yamashita Sensei 花は桜木人は武士 Hana wa sakuragi hito wa bushi. Perhaps the translation of this Kotowaza demonstrates, or can demonstrate, in part, the feeling that came over me the day I met Yamashita Sensei. “Among the flowers, the cherry tree; among men, the warrior. Meaning: Just as the cherry blossom is the quintessential flower, the samurai is the quintessential man.

Through the great teacher Salvador Herráiz, a dear friend and, more than once, companion of pleasant moments, I received the invitation to attend the presentation of his book, which would take place in the city of Guadalajara, near Madrid. Herraiz Sensei, with singular elegance, had asked me if I could say a few words during the event, explaining that I would be sitting next to him and two other teachers. One of these teachers, Yosuke Yamashita Sensei, seated to my left, confirmed his greatness by manifesting in his behavior an impeccable posture and attention to Herraiz Sensei's event, as well as to my presentation.

Homenaje He greeted me in Japanese and said two or three words to me in his native language. I responded simply by saying: あなたは私にとても親切です! 親切な言葉をありがとうございました。 Anata wa watashi ni totemo shinsetsu desu! Shinsetsuna kotoba o arigatō gozaimashita. = You are very kind to me! Thank you for your kind words. As life progresses, years teach us that we can differentiate people by their behavior, so it was not hard to see that people did not exaggerate when referring to Yamashita Sensei as a Grand Master. Great ones need not say a word, since they are immediately recognized for their manners and conduct. 一日一生 (Ichinichi isshō) Translation: One day, a lifetime.

Upon arriving in Spain, Yamashita Sensei taught his Spanish students that inner freedom is situated at the center of personality, living in the realm of motivations; and it's from this point that activity is directed to the periphery and expands in the outer world of manifestation. Through Miguel Establés Sensei, a student of Yamashita Sensei, I was able to understand that, just as with the constant germination of new actions, an always new and intact freedom awaits us in the form of movement, it is in the student that the teacher is recognized. 森羅万象 (Shinra banshō) The forest that covers everything and the ten thousand things. I have never been a practitioner of Karate-Do, however, I can see that in each movement there is a cause that demands its effect, an impulse that wants to "run out" in the direction in which it was launched.

There is no doubt that the fruit always falls close to the tree. That is what I felt with Miguel Establés Sensei, alluding to Yamashita Sensei. Perhaps it is true that the universe is nothing more than a great orchestration of forces, an immense concert in which man also emits his note, more or less conscious, more or less free, according to his evolution and will. Yamashita Sensei issued many notes! So much so that someone took him to teach on another plane. However, he left us an Opera written to make Verdi (Giuseppe Fortunino Francesco Verdi) jealous with his story. Great men are those who are remembered, who leave traces, and, through them, others continue to learn and grow every day. Only in degrees of evolution superior to the

human level, we can have the capacity to cover such vast panoramas, providentially hidden from the current man. From what I have heard from his students, Yamashita was a classic man, with positive and precisely definable content. It's simple, a Master of Yamashita Sensei's level makes little distinction between his work and his leisure, between his mind and his body, between his education and his recreation... He simply pursues his vision of excellence in everything he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or having fun. He thinks he always does both at the same time 先生、一生教えてくれてありがとう! Sensei, isshō oshiete kurete arigatō! Sensei, thank you for teaching me all my life!

Kajukenbo is an eclectic and versatile system that was born as a useful and credible tool for self-defense in modern times, it is not a martial art of sports or traditional profile and therefore its learning is suitable for all types of people whatever their condition and in which there is only one premise according to its creator Sijo Emperado. "Fight to train, train to fight, fight to win.... go for broke". The standard techniques, above all, have to serve as a model of application of different wellstructured basic principles whose purpose is purely efficiency, sometimes even supported by the ability of creative improvisation. This is basically achieved by training different combinations of the same principles and avoiding their excessive mechanization. Every aggressor has a plan or a predetermined intentionality, so it is unquestionable to be extremely effective in the blocking and subsequent response by correctly using coordination and synchronization to break the opponent's initiative and position ourselves with advantage, and as Emperado said, suffocate him with quick and forceful bursts of blows in specific areas and move with dynamic and overwhelming transitions that prevent the aggressor's reaction.

Karate The month of January of this 2022 ended with the death of the most important Japanese Karate master who has made his life in Spain, YosukeYamashita. He has been an example and reference for all and his way of being, his parsimony of word at the same time as his courtesy and his deep spirit has only made his legend bigger. Yamashitasensei had a close relationship with our collaborator Salvador Herraiz, whom he supported and accompanied in many of his activities. Therefore no one better than him to make his personal tribute that today in Black Belt, we profess to the great master in his memory. IN MEMORIAM TO THE SAMURAI OF THE DOOR OF THE SUN YOSUKE YAMASHITA MY PERSONAL MEMORY... Yoshuke Yamashita sensei was born in Tokyo in 1941. His father, Yasazaemon, was a biology teacher of the Emperor of Japan, Hirohito, as well as 6th Dan of Kendo. With him, and at the age of 6, the young Yosuke began the practice of Kendo and at the age of 12, Judo. A neighbor of his, a student of the well-known master Masatoshi Nakayama in the Karate club of the University of Takushoku, would be the one who introduced Yamashita to his body the desire to practice the art of atemi. Later on, he would be placed under the orders of GojuRyu master Yoshihiro Urakawa at the Shinbukan dojo. Urakawa would become his t e a c h e r, a l t h o u g h h e w o u l d a l s o t r a i n o n occasion with the leader of the school in Japan, the legendary Yamaguchi Gogen. YosukeYamashita, as a young man, during his years in Japan. n 1962, YosukeYamashita teaches in the Japanese capital, and in 1969 he moves to the German city of Düsseldorf, where he stays for 6 months. AdanCzartoryski de Borbón, the Spanish-Polish prince, first cousin of the then Prince Don Juan Carlos (who later became Head of State as King of Spain for four decades) is one of the pioneers of Karate in Spain, and together with his teacher in ShitoRyuYasunariIshimik and other Spaniards travel to London for a Karate tournament organized by the WadoRyu master Tatsuo Suzuki. There Ishimi meets master Yosuke Yamashita. Both talk and Ishimi convinces Yamashita that in Spain the weather is better and the women are very beautiful, as Yamashita himself confessed to me in one of our many chats. Shortly afterwards, for these or other reasons, the master came to Spain where he settled definitively in 1969.

Karate In 1970, in Madrid, Yamashita teaches in the Samurai gyms, in the time of Fernando Franco de Sarabia (in the streets Juan Bravo and Martinez Campos). Later he did it in the Fujiyama of Rodriguez Prada, in Arapiles street (where AtsuoHiruma also teaches), and the Banzai of Maldonado street. With his 5th Dan of Karate, he opened in 1974 his own dojo in Echegaray street, in front of the Congress of Deputies, where he remained until a few years ago, earning the nickname of "the samurai of the Puerta de Sol" because of its proximity to the emblematic place. Forty years later he had to leave the building due to real estate issues (where the Hotel Inglés is located) and settle near the Plaza de Castilla in the Spanish capital.

Exhibition in 1973. Andrés Congregado Ciudad, Javier Sada, Javier Pineño, Fermín Zancada, Daniel Ribé, Javier Martínez, José Ramón Herreros, etc... have probably been his main students, but his teaching has influenced practically all karatekas in Spain. Another outstanding student who began his practice at that time, under Yamashitasensei's guidance, was Álvaro Olmo, although he would later continue his life in California. Around 1975 Yamashita together with Ishimi, Hiruma, Romero Cortina and Juan Manuel Fernandez Belmonte, will create the rules of grades for black belt exams that with future modifications will serve as the basis for exams of many organizations. On July 25, 1979 Master Yamashita married Harumi Osawa in the Spanish Evangelical Church of Madrid, with whom he would have his children Rikiya in 1980, and Go two years later. Personally I met Yamashitasensei in 1981, when I had him in front of me evaluating my kata Chinto during the Villa de Madrid Trophy. I took it as a special responsibility. Years later, in 1988, he wrote me a letter of recommendation to visit master Yamaguchi Gogen in Tokyo.

Yosuke Yamashita, in addition to his dedication to Karate, has been an active collaborator since 1991 in the Japanese Community in Spain, of which he had begun as vice-president but of which he became president a few years later. In 1995 he was promoted to 8th Dan (he had held the 7th Dan since 1984). In 2004 I have the honor of having him support me by attending the presentation of my book on Karate and King Don Juan Carlos, in the Palace of the Dukes of Infantado, in my city, Guadalajara. The following year he receives his 9th Dan. As it is well born to be grateful at the time and now, wherever he is... thank you sensei.

In 2007 Yamashita was awarded the Diploma of Merit by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan and presented by Ambassador Yoshikawa. The following year the master ChoyuHentona turns 60 years old, and takes the opportunity to celebrate his Kanreki, the "rebirth" to a new beginning of life, a celebration that is traditionally done coinciding with that age. On April 25th he organizes a gala at the Teatro Mira in Pozuelo de Alarcón, which is attended, along with karate lovers and friends of the master, the Ambassador of Japan, then Motohide Yoshikawa, and the master Yamashita himself, along with other prominent karatekas. An honor for Hentonasensei, from the same school as Yamashita but from the Okinawan side instead of the main island of Japan.

In 2010 the oldest students and friends of Master Yamashita, organized an emotional tribute in Madrid full of atmosphere and Japanese culture. In it we meet a multitude of veteran Japanese and Spanish instructors. Masters such as Yaezura, Kohata, Shuto, Sakai, Fujita, Nomura, Tahara, Doi, Ishimi, Onaga, Fujioka, perform their kata and techniques in honor of Yamashitasensei, who also participates actively performing his famous demonstration of yesteryear in which he supported in his body the breaking of wooden sticks. The perfect complement is undoubtedly the masterful performance of master Goshi Yamaguchi, son of the famous "cat", who on a visit to Spain delights us with a spectacular kata that will remain in our memories for his look and concentration that transmitted his deep spirit. In 2011 who writes these words asks, I ask, Yamashitasensei to write a foreword to my book on Historical Places of Jarate in Japan, between Heaven and Earth. Yamashita accepts and writes things like... "Karate-do is the basis of a mentality on two planes: that of emptiness in the physical, in the body, and that of heaven in thought, in the mind or spirit, eliminating any desire, enmity or vainglory. This idea in karate-do is applied through an attitude of permanent concentration, a constant kamae, a mental and physical preparation for the unexpected, which manifests itself, if necessary, in a defense which is immediately followed by an attack, but, not with the aim of winning, but with the will to restore balance to things, to return to a previous state of peace." Then and now...thank you sensei! Domo arigato. In 2012, a small group of us are invited by the new Ambassador of Japan in Spain, Mr. SatoruSatoh, to his official residence to pay homage to senseiYamashita, on the occasion of the very important Decoration of the "Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays" that the Emperor of Japan imposed on him at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo in November of the previous year. During the meeting Yamashita makes a long speech in Japanese and then tries to translate it into English, but after only a minute he decides to cut to the chase and limit himself to a decisive "Thank you". Despite so many years in this country... his Spanish was still not very fluent. That's how he was, with few words. In 2014, Master Yamashita was awarded the 10th Dan after a lifetime dedicated to the development of this martial art. He becomes a legend, if he was not already one. That same year, Yamashitasensei (who honored me with his friendship and used to support with his presence many of the activities that a server has organized) returns to my city, Guadalajara, for the presentation of a technical DVD of my authorship.

Jesús Calvo, Yosuke Yamashita, the Honorary Consul Pepe Japón and Salvador Herraiz. A year later I organized a meeting of veteran karateka with His Majesty King Juan Carlos, to remember his years in Karate. At the time it was reported in this magazine, Cinturón Negro. As it could not be otherwise, Yosuke Yamashita is one of my companions. During the meeting Yamashita wants to put on record before the King that Karate must come from the bowels of the Hara, from the stomach, making a short explanation that keeps Don Juan Carlos very attentive. Also that same year he accompanies me in the town of Tres Cantos to receive the important master Masatoshi Miyazato, who arrives in Spain by the hand of the colleague and friend of Argentine origin Sergio Estevez, then 7th Dan, and installed for years in this city of Madrid.

Just a couple of years later Yamashita is the main distinguished in the Shihan Awards of Honor to the National Legends, which I have the pleasure to organize in Guadalajara with the presence of the Ambassador of Japan and again of His Majesty King Juan Carlos. Yamashita is happy to meet again with the monarch who some time ago was so enthusiastic about the incipient Karate. There are many personal memories with him. I have had the honor of being at his house several times, either to consult him

for information about an old sword, or simply to pick him up or drop him off after some activity (or just to have a few beers in a nearby bar or eat at a restaurant, of course Japanese). That same year, 2018, TVE makes a very special documentary about subtle aspects of Japan's culture in which Karate will be presented as much more than a sport. Yamashitasensei and myself are chosen to show those different aspects of the deeper Karate, and I am also honored to bring him to my Dojo for the recording of the program.What luck! I still

Karate remember the producer dropping her papers and her eyes widening in astonishment when Yamashita performs a few sharp deep breaths as a warm-up to a later kata to be recorded. With his passing, we have lost a reference of that more traditional, classical, spiritual Karate, the one he always wanted to develop. We will not forget his peculiar way of saying in few words that "Karate...Way". Rest in peace master... and as it is well born to be grateful... thank you for everything once again!

Master Frisan starts a new series of DVDs on the best Kyusho points for different situations. In this first installment, of 2 volumes, we focus the study on the defense against the main arm attacks: grabs, thrusts and punches. We will analyze the solutions against grabs and thrusts to understand the basic principles of Kyusho and then we will analyze the solutions against direct fist strikes such as the Jab and the Cross, and circular strikes such as the hook. Dermatome stimuli, pressure points and various exercises are discussed in order to train and learn. The following two collaborations, of the many that were considered, are indispensable, more because of the closeness of the relationship that their authors had with YamashitaSensei, than because of the position that both historically occupied as presidents of the GojuKai. Yamashita's position on the Karate federation evolved over time, until finally, and with the current president D. Antonio Moreno Marqueño, he found the warmest, most affectionate and undoubtedly deserved attention: he was awarded the 10th Dan and was paid tribute in life. The current president had the opportunity to know closely the category of the person, and undoubtedly that of his style, because even though he continued with Shotokan, Goju was the style that saw him grow in his early years as a karateka. The attention and affection with which he has treated the Japanese pioneers honors the current president, who has known, like no one else, how to deal with wisdom, firmness and left hand, the always thorny issue of "traditional karate" within the Federation. However, there was a time, in the 80's, when, although actively participating within the institution, YamashitaSensei wanted to mark a line of independence with his GojuKai, linking it to the headquarters in Japan.

He brought on board his right-hand man, probably the person who knew him best, not only because of their close relationship and knowledge of Japanese culture and traditions, but also because of the deep friendship that united them. Thus, Mr. Miguel Ángel Establés Elduque, at the time my professor of Oriental Medicine and Karate during those epic years, maintained a unique and close position with Yamashita, and therefore could not be absent in this tribute. I was personally able to participate in many of those meetings and I professed my admiration for the characters of both, feeling, more than understanding, that invisible bond that united them and made them shine when they were together. He was succeeded by Daniel Ribé, another great name in the history of GojuRyu, who wanted to be part of this fond farewell by sharing some memories. From the deepest part of my being, thank you very much for all your support and for all your teachings, Sensei. This is what I have tried to express with the deepest respect, in the brief message written in my poor and rusty Japanese, with which I dare to start the small contribution to this more than deserved tribute in your honor. You are no longer among us ...Shikataganai! (仕方がない) I close my eyes and my mind, full of memories, transports me to an intense and indelible past ...It was the year 1971. I was living in Zaragoza. It had been just three years since I had returned from Japan and, among other activities, I was giving Karate classes at the mythical Judo Kwai club, where in 1958, at the age of 13, I had been initiated in the study and practice of Judo, the only Japanese art of self-defense known in Europe in the middle of the 20th century. I began my apprenticeship under the tutelage of Professor Fernando Jaumá, and later with the French master Robert Muratore. Later, the one who would become my "brother in arms" and eternal companion of adventures, the great Judo master and pioneer of Karate in Spain, but, above all, a dear friend, Luis Zapatero Vicente, took charge of the club. It was he, my older brother in Budo, fervent seeker and student of the ancient Japanese combat arts, who instilled in me with his example and knowledge the love for the wisdom of the Far East. With him I began my journey on a path that would end up taking me to the Land of the Rising Sun, in search of the essence and roots of that culture, which manifested itself in a special way in the arts of Budo. In Japan I had the opportunity to visit several schools of Karate, and although I delved into other systems, I finally decided on the style that had really attracted me the most from the beginning: the GojuRyu Karate of Master Gogen Yamaguchi. In recent years, thanks to the so-called action movies, Asian martial arts had experienced a kind of hype, and schools of Japanese Karate, Korean Tae Kwon Do and other combat styles had begun to proliferate around the world. When I returned to Spain there were already several oriental teachers giving classes in their respective systems. At that time, I had two good friends of Japanese nationality, Mr. HoriTakuichi and Mr. TakahashiNobuyuki, two brilliant university students who had obtained a scholarship to learn Spanish in Spain, and had chosen the University of Zaragoza. They lived near my house and we used to meet often for lunch, or just to have a coffee and chat. One day, Mr. Hori told me that when he arrived in Madrid, coming from Japan, and while arranging his papers at the Japanese embassy, he had met a Japanese 5th Dan of GojuRyu Karate. His name was Yosuke Yamashita, and that was the first reference I had of you, dear Sensei. According to what Mr. Hori informed me, you had recently settled in Spain, after having been teaching for a few months in Düsseldorf, Germany. As far as Mr. Hori knew, you had come to Spain at the invitation of Master Ishimi, and once here, you decided to stay, because "you liked the climate better, and you preferred the Spanish cuisine to the German one", as you yourself would later confirm to me. I later learned that you belonged to the ShinbukanDojo of Master Yoshihiro Urakawa. You were the only GojuRyu master in Spain, and I felt the need to pay you a courtesy visit and pay my respects in person. Mr. Hori was kind enough to arrange an interview with you, and even offered to accompany me personally to Madrid to make the introductions properly. The meeting took place that same weekend. We had arranged to meet at the Glorieta de Carlos V (which, in those days, housed the disappeared Scalextric of Atocha), very close to your house. After the traditional greetings, showing your great kindness and courtesy, you invited us to your house where, drinking a few cups of O-cha, we chatted for a long time about Japan, Budo and GojuRyu Karate.

You listened with great attention, and even though you were a person of few words, your concise but always kind answers were full of content, which cleared my doubts and generously enriched my thirst for knowledge. I was fascinated by your calm speech and your traditional approach to Karate, so different from the current that had already begun to spread everywhere (both in the East and in the West), in which quarrels and disputes between schools, competitors and even instructors, who struggled to set themselves above the others (and even to call themselves direct heirs of the founder of the school), were becoming more and more frequent. Without disdaining sporting competition, it was clear that you lived, practiced and taught Do, which, in your own words, should be developed through the observance of the ethical and moral principles of Budo and constant training in the Dojo. At this point, you valued the importance of goodwill and camaraderie among training partners. As for the correct personal attitude during practice, you emphasized above all concentration, breathing and the development of the kime. It was encouraging to feel Karate again as the Way I had sought from the beginning, and as I had been able to recognize in some experts (generally anonymous) with whom I had the honor and fortune to coincide in Japan. I remember that, when we said goodbye, you praised my respect and my good predisposition towards Japanese culture, and even though my knowledge was scarce, you encouraged me to go ahead offering me all your support. I returned home satisfied, deeply grateful and with the presentiment of having found something that, as it happened, was going to be decisive in my martial life. Federation organized the first Karate refereeing course, which was given by the Italian professor Pio Galli, and which we both attended. Other times, every time I had the opportunity to visit you. By that time you had already settled in Echegaray Street in Madrid. Not long after, personal reasons took me to the American continent, where I continued practicing Goju and furthering my studies in Far Eastern Traditional Medicine - especially in Venezuela, but also in Boston and Miami (USA). In Caracas, after teaching in schools and Dojos of great friends and fellow Budo practitioners, I finally founded "Shu-Gyo", my own GojuRyu Karate Dojo. I will never forget the day when a student that you had had in Düsseldorf, although he was Spanish, came to Venezuela on a business trip and visited me at my dojo and gave me the GojuRyu lapel pin on your behalf. I keep it like gold in my pocket! Several times I traveled to the old continent to visit my family and to train with you. Apart from the morning classes, which I attended religiously, I would train with you all morning, learning Kata and technique. On one of these trips you examined me for 3rd Dan, a title I received directly from the HonbuDojo, signed by Yamaguchi Shihan. You also gave me your signed permission to officially represent you in Venezuela. My stay in America was really a turning point that marked a before and after in my life; I visited unknown places, met people who still live in prehistory, lived amazing adventures and made great friends.

Like everything that has a beginning, my American journey came to an end and it was time for me to return. When I returned to Spain, everything had changed so abruptly that sometimes it was hard for me to recognize things. It was a great joy to see you again and to start attending your classes on a regular basis. Your older students, whom I had already met on my travels, welcomed me with the same affection and camaraderie as always, offering me their unconditional friendship. In those days you began to speak to me in Spanish. You surprised me, you did not master the language, but you were able to express any concept, at least I understood you perfectly! As for me, after so many years without speaking Japanese, and having been immersed in other languages and cultures, I could hardly hold a conversation. So, in a brief but clear way, you explained to me that Karate had become independent from the Spanish Judo and D.A. Federation to become the Spanish Karate Federation, with its own statutes, rules and adjustments to the new times. The numbers of the titles that we had obtained in the first national Black Belt exams in May 1970 had been changed, and new titles had been issued that annulled the previous ones. In addition, the new Black Belt examination regulations, in its veiled aim to unify all styles (that first attempt at globalization!), required all applicants to submit Pinan or Heian as compulsory basic Kata, regardless of the style practiced, and that was a real problem. DEAR MASTER Last February 4, Master Yamashita, left us forever. Yosuke Yamashita: our Sensei. I met him in another month of February (1973), when I started attending his classes at the "Samurai" gym, on Juan Bravo Street. That was one of the most momentous events in my life, as it opened the way for me to a new world, even though I was not aware of it, at the time.

But the basic ideas left no room for doubt, and he repeated them constantly: behaving correctly, the extraordinary importance of breathing, spirit of sacrifice, patience, observance of the rules of etiquette in the Dojo and in everyday life... In short: you were with him to learn Karate Do, the Way of Karate, and the sports aspects of the art had but a very secondary importance, although he didn't despise it. In those early years, in his perception of Karate, the notion of force (GO) prevailed over any other concept, whilst as he advanced in knowledge and mastery of internal energy (KI), he evolved towards much more fluid forms (JU). Recently, it was a true luxury seeing the way he moved over the tatami, with an unusual suppleness and dexterity that for sure didn't correspond to his advanced age. I remember that, in the early years, the practice of Kumite was much more demanding than it is today. It could be said that the old saying "sparing the rod is spoiling the child" was literally applied, and there was not much consideration regarding the degree of knowledge of the partner you were sparring with. Only blows to the face were to be avoided, but in general there was much more contact, so having small injuries and bruises was most common.

After classes, it was common to have a few beers with the Master. There was an unwritten rule by which only the top belts (minimum brown belt) could approach him and talk, except in celebrations. Generally, we all wanted to take the opportunity to ask him the doubts we had about all kinds of things: names of techniques, history of Karate, his own anecdotes, differences with other styles, etc. The truth is that, seen from the perspective of the years, it must have been truly exhausting for him, for we really subjected him to a continuous and non-stop “third degree”. However, he would answer everything, with infinite patience and without showing the slightest sign of annoyance or anger. Perhaps, where he used to teach more about the Way and what it really meant, was during the summer training camps (Shyochu Geiko). In the 5 hours of daily training, he was constantly discovering and revealing to us what we could achieve through sacrifice and physical fatigue, until we could make our vital energy (KI) come out and, with it, activate all our potential. In this special training sessions, Kobudo was also practiced (a different weapon every year!), unusual techniques were remembered; fasting was observed for one whole day; night training was carried out (in which he always told us about the time when practicing Karate was forbidden, and it had to be done secretly); the development of internal energy was taught and, in general, a thorough review of the whole technical background was carried out through Kihon and Kata. We also had the experience of a winter course (Kan Geiko), in which we made endless tours of the beach in Sanchin Dachi and practiced Kihon in the sea, with water up to our chests.

Anecdotes would give enough material to edit a book, memories are countless, but this is not the time to recall them and let us defeat by nostalgia. Hwa Rang Do’s True Influence in The Martial Arts Not long ago, Grandmaster Taejoon Lee asked me to write about the influence of the Hwa Rang Do® and Supreme Grandmaster Dojoonim Dr. Joo Bang Lee (The Founder of Hwa Rang Do®) on the American martial arts world. I think Grandmaster Taejoon Lee asked me to write this article for the following reasons. I am the only co-disciple of Dojoonim and his brother Kuksunim Joo Sang Lee. I am also the only surviving disciple who have witnessed and can testify to the path Hwa Rang Do has travelled in the States over the past 50 years from its inception through the present. Hwa Rang Do in America began when Dojoonim's brother, Joo Sang Lee, came to the United States in 1968 and set up a school (dojang). The first American Hwa Rang Do school was established in Huntington Park, California. I arrived in the United States in the spring of 1972, and fortunately, it was easy to get to the dojang because I first settled in the City of Bell, which was adjacent to Huntington Park. Although I was a young man, I quickly gained the title and responsibility of an assistant instructor at the dojang. Therefore, I am uniquely qualified to write this article, having taught and experienced all that took place in the first established Hwa Rang Do school in America and throughout its entire growth. In the 1960s, Dojoonim established and ran a record-breaking 69 schools in South Korea. However, due to the repressive nature of the existing dictatorship government, Dojoonim left Korea to the United States with the dream of spreading Hwa Rang Do globally. He immigrated to America in 1972 alone, leaving his wife and 4 children behind. After much struggle overcoming many hurdles, he was finally able to bring his family to America and they were reunited in 1974. In 1973, he established his first school in the city of Downey, California, not too far from Huntington Park. It would be no exaggeration to say that Hwa Rang Do in America has entered a new phase of flourishing. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to travel back and forth between the two dojangs and learn from two of the greatest martial arts masters of all time. Looking back on it now, Hwa Rang Do came to me like an inevitable fate.

When I reflect on my Hwa Rang Do experience, there is one moment that I always remember the most. There was a very large martial arts expo at the Long Beach Sports Arena in early 1973. I do not remember who hosted the event, but we were invited to do a demonstration, and ABC Wide World of Sports, the most popular national sports broadcast at the time, interviewed Dojoonim. At this event, Dojoonim had the opportunity to witness firsthand the American martial arts society, where many top martial artists in the United States were enjoying a free exchange of ideas and techniques. Dojoonim as a visionary that he is prophesied, "Soon, the era of mixed martial arts will come to stay in the United States and they will all look like Hwa Rang Do, a comprehensive system." (YouTube link of Hwa Rang Do in the 1960s: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybLNYYeuzno) Before I say any more, I think it's important to clarify my thoughts on various martial arts and fighting sports to avoid misunderstanding. I respect and enjoy all the traditional martial arts and fighting sports. I believe from long-life experience that there is always something to learn from everyone. In particular, some of the training methods of martial sports, such as MMA, boxing and wrestling, must be consulted by traditional martial artists and vice versa. Every fighting technique works in its own way, and there is always something to lear n. In evaluating traditional martial arts and fighting sports, I believe it is more important to discern between bad and good teachers and students rather than bad and good martial arts. Unfortunately, many traditional Chinese martial arts are under challenges claiming they are not practical in a real situation. Still, when you look at the fights of the so-called masters who are the subject of criticism, it takes less than 10 seconds to know that they are unqualified people with no practical training. However, I have often seen that people who have studied Chinese martial arts perform amazingly well in real fights. In the end, I realize that the never-ending debate over whether or not a particular martial arts technique works depends on whether or not the martial artist in question is properly trained. It takes no more than 2, 3 minutes on average to finish a fight. Every fight can only be won if you build a comprehensive combination of determination, situational awareness, the skill of reading your opponents, and effective defensive and offensive skills, along with strong physical stamina.

It's a personal opinion, but to have this ability, you have to experience hitting and getting hit to the level of a real lifefighting situation. I realized that a martial artist who has not experienced the real beating and hitting does not truly know how to defend and fight effectively. I believe that you can't appreciate martial arts without the experience of nosebleeds, fainting, bruising, broken bones etc. Of course, we do not recommend this extreme level of training to all students who are learning martial arts. However, to introduce yourself as a professional martial artist, you must think about experiencing this kind of intense training purposefully. To be honest, I don't prefer the English translation of Martial Arts, but I use it because I don't have any other options. The word 'Art' tends to water down the extreme levels of various disciplines necessary for it to be a true martial art. To get back to my original point, Dojoonim never spoke to me personally, but according to his acquaintances, he was challenged numerous times by the best fighters, martial artists, as well as gangsters, on the Korean peninsula when he began introducing Hwa Rang Do in the early 1960s. At the time, Korea was a society where the way of the fists was the law. It was not long after Korea's independence from the Japanese stronghold and the end of the Korean War, which created an environment like the wild, wild west, the survival of the fittest. So, all the quarrels and disagreements were settled by bareknuckle fighting and the best fighters were unremitting. Dojoonim, of course, was able to win the fights against any of them and stand tall in that world. The legendary fame he gained during the challenges became a force to be reckoned with and probably helped him to be so successful in setting up 69 schools in such a short time during the period of post-war poverty in the small nation of South Korea.

In the early 1960s, Dojoonim set up the Hwa Rang Do Headquarters at the 5th Jongro District Square Market entrance in Seoul, the home of the most feared criminal organization with the greatest power who were even able to manipulate national politics. Although their chief was hanged in 1961, their power was still strongly entrenched in the area. I know the situation very well because I was born in 1955 and raised just over 200 meters from the future site of the Korean Hwa Rang Do Headquarters and also lived across the alley from the executed crime boss. My father also had business in the area and had some dispute on a property line issue with the organization. The case went all the way to the supreme court. My father finally won, but I still remember my father's overwhelming troubles. Setting up a martial arts school at the market entrance was an act of challenge, defiance, and was extremely dangerous. But, as always, Dojoonim met the challenges head-on and prevailed. It was truly an amazing feat of courage. It became a part of Korean history that could not be achieved with courage alone, but with the ability to handle real combat situations with exceptional fighting skills to subdue and earn their respect. He brought peace and order to the community and became a hero cherished by its people. Anyone wearing the Hwa Rang Do lapel pin worn by the Black Belts were well taken care of by the vendors and shop owners. Not only was he feared and respected by gangsters, but he was also respected by other martial art masters. In those days, no one could open a martial arts school near any other schools without being challenged. Needless to say, there were no other martial art schools near our Hwa Rang Do dojangs. Hwa Rang Do dominated and remained supreme. In the '70s, many big-name Korean martial arts masters came to the United States. Distinguished masters came to visit Dojoonim, and I have had the good fortune to witness firsthand how they treated Dojoonim with the utmost respect. It was truly impressive because no masters of the Korean martial arts who met with Dojoonim challenged or disrespected him in any way.

I choose and love Hwa Rang Do because of the very presence of Dojoonim. In the late 1950s, when the Republic of Korea was devastated by war and the entire nation was struggling as the world's second poorest country, Dojoonim introduced Hwa Rang Do to the world. It was a trying era, and studying martial arts was regarded as a luxury. The great success Dojoonim achieved in spreading Hwa Rang Do in a short time, empty-handed, alone is truly awe inspiring and an important aspect of the Korean historical landscape we should never forget.

Another reason would be the comprehensiveness and completeness of Hwa Rang Do’s vast curriculum. It is amazing that the key concepts and techniques of all martial arts worldwide could be found in the Hwa Rang Do techniques of more than 4,000. Korea had little interaction with the rest of the world in most of the first half of the 20th century when Dojoonim introduced Hwa Rang Do to the general public. It proves that Hwa Rang Do is an independently developed martial arts system from ancient times, and other martial arts have not influenced it in the modern era.

The third reason is that I was fascinated by Hwa Rang Do's long and rich history and culture. Two thousand years ago, the Korean Peninsula was in a time of fierce inter-state warfare, and of course, all the kingdoms developed a fighting system of their own to use in battle. There were three main kingdoms – Koguryo, Baekche, and Silla. Among them, the kingdom that unified the Korean peninsula for the first time in its history was the smallest of the three, the Kingdom of Silla, the origin of Hwa Rang Do. History has already proven that the Kingdom of Silla conquered and ruled a unified Korean peninsula for a thousand years and that the Hwarang System played a decisive role in unifying the peninsula and building Silla's powerful empire. Finally, it is the practicality of Hwa Rang Do. As I said earlier, it was fascinating that there were no plausibly gorgeous but unproven techniques, no skills that didn't consider the opponent's movements, and absurd moves that are incoherent with the physical laws of nature. This claim is evidenced by the achievements of our instructors and practitioners from all five branches of the US military – Officers, Colonels, Special Forces members, Veterans… among others. Most famous are the famed Special Forces Hand-to-Hand Combat Instructor and 3rd Degree Hwa Rang Do Black Sash, Michael D. Echanis. In 1975, Echanis was formally appointed the "Senior Instructor and Advisor to the USA John F Kennedy Center of Military Assistance Hand to Hand Combat/Special Weapons School for Instructors. Echanis then moved to Little Creek, VA, where he was appointed as senior advisor and head instructor for the SEAL TEAM TWO Hwa Rang Do Hand to Hand Combat/Special Weapons and Special Tactics School for Instructors.

On September 8, 1978, at 1300 hours, Echanis, Chuck Sanders, "Bobby" van Nguyen, and General Alegrett died in an aircraft accident at the mouth of the Sapoá River near the Nicaragua/Costa Rican border. Before his death, Echanis, with the help of Dr. Joo Bang Lee, authored three military hand-to-hand combat books based on Hwa Rang Do, with all techniques having been coordinated and directed by Dr. Lee. During the '80s, the US government deemed these books too dangerous for the general public and briefly outlawed them. Michael Echanis is buried at St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Ontario, Oregon. Now I want to conclude the story to help you understand Hwa Rang Do and Dojoonim Dr. Joo Bang Lee and share what I have witnessed and experienced about how Hwa Rang Do has influenced martial arts in the United States. Up to the '70s, the world's martial arts were each in their own form and on their own path. Anyone who had just one look at a punch or a kick would immediately be able to identify what martial arts they were studying. But now, a few decades later, all martial arts are starting to look similar to each other. The transfer and convergence of techniques among different martial arts took place, especially after the coming of the Internet / Digital Era. The best example is Kung Fu, a martial art unique to China. Hollywood has produced many martial arts/action films based on Chinese martial art Kung Fu techniques. As the years went by, these films began to feature the techniques of every martial art we could imagine. However, the techniques of Kung Fu we are used to seeing in the demonstrations and movies nowadays are completely different from the techniques of Kung Fu that we saw in the old Hong Kong movies.

It is easy to see how much the techniques evolved in Kung Fu techniques in a few decades by comparing the new Kung Fu action movies to the old Hong Kong movies of the '70s. I have no intention to disrespect the thousands of years old and proud tradition of Kung Fu, but I am only stating the fact. I recommend that all traditional martial arts consider adopting new ways as long as it does not damage the original spirit. Of course, some of the old traditional martial arts have not changed, but we can witness the additions and changes of many ancient martial arts techniques. There are also countless new martial arts similar to mixed martial arts popping up in China and worldwide. The era of mixed martial arts has arrived over the last 20 years in all areas of martial arts, as Dojoonim Dr. Joo Bang Lee prophesied half a century ago. I praise such changes, but I also believe a clear line has to be identified between traditional martial arts and fighting sports based on their values and purpose because traditional martial arts offer more to learn than just fighting skills. I can confidently say that the change began in the United States and that there was Hwa Rang Do at its beginning. In the 70s and 80s, Hwa Rang Do had countless demonstrations, both large and small, throughout the United States. With a whopping 4,000 techniques in its arsenal, Hwa Rang Do demonstrations have showcased countless different techniques, always dazzling the spectators brilliantly. Every punching, kicking, throwing, joint manipulation, weapons, and ground techniques we can imagine were demonstrated at the highest level. If I claim that Hwa Rang Do introduced a variety of colorful ariel kicks for the first time in the United States, many young people would have difficulty believing it. However, the demonstration videos of Grandmaster Taejoon Lee from the '70s and '80s do not lie but faithfully testify to the claim. The Hwa Rang Do demonstration was hailed with cheers and amazement wherever we went, and we have produced countless students over the past halfcentury around the world. We demonstrated in numerous popular national TV programs in the United States, as well as being published in countless martial arts magazines. The unique techniques of Hwa Rang Do have been released to American society and the world for decades without filtering. Interestingly, from the late '80s and onwards, many American martial arts demonstrations began to resemble Hwa Rang Do demonstrations. There is no other explanation for the cause of the change in the demonstration skills and techniques of other martial arts other than the influence of Hwa Rang Do. To give you an interesting example, the flower of Hwa Rang Do kicks is a beautiful and powerful variety of spinning kicks that rotate 360 degrees or more, maximizing on the power of centrifugal force. Hwa Rang Do was the only martial art with these kicks until most of the '80s. There are similar kicks in the Brazilian martial arts Capoeira and the Kyokushin Karate, founded in Japan by the Korean master Young Choi. Still, they are essentially completely different from Hwa Rang Do. Nowadays, the spinning kick, one of the proud trademarks of Hwa Rang Do, has been adopted by almost every other martial art. It is, however, unfortunate to see many teach and learn imperfect techniques. The Flying Spinning Kick was the kick that led me to the first win against the previous year's Karate Tournament champion in the early '70s. I still remember the crowd cheering to my brilliant ariel spinning kick, which they all saw for the first time. Dojoonim did not attend the tournament, but he later told me that he had heard praises from other masters. The satisfied expression that prevailed on his face made me very happy and immensely proud, that I properly represented Hwa Rang Do. At the 2004 Athens Olympics in Taekwondo, South Korea's Moon Dae-sung won the gold medal with a rather unstable back spinning kick. Seeing this reminded me of a situation in the United States where I once participated in a Taekwondo competition in the early '70s. Hwa Rang Do's spinning kicks were among my

favorite, and I worked very hard to perfect the techniques while visualizing Dojoonim's most perfect kick display, and I rarely failed using the kick. I hit my opponent's face with the spinning kick, but I didn't get a score. When I protested to the referee, he said he could not give a score because Taekwondo did not recognize such a kick. Since then, I have no longer attended Taekwondo competitions. Readers must realize that I am talking about events half a century ago. It may be an excuse for a judge's biased decision, but I think that being able to use it as such is piecemeal evidence that Taekwondo did not use such kicks. I couldn't let go of the complicated emotions for a while, thinking that my kick, which wasn't recognized as a technique in Taekwondo competitions in the early '70s, was able to win a Taekwondo Gold Medal at the Olympics more than 30 years later. That, I thought was real irony. I earned the 1st-degree black belt in Taekwondo in the late '60s, so I am familiar with the techniques Taekwondo taught and used in the old days. Old Taekwondo masters will admit that the Taekwondo kicking and punching techniques were very monotonous, unlike today. Of course, this is by no means a disparagement of Taekwondo. As a Korean, I am

immensely proud of Taekwondo, which many people love worldwide. Taekwondo also deserves praise for its highly effective kicking techniques developed over the years. The spinning kick is a technique that many martial arts students find difficult, just as a gold medalist Moon Daesung fell after a kick in the Olympic final competition. Many martial artists feel it’s difficult to maintain balance and expose the upper body to the opponent's counterattack as their feet pass through the target. Most people also create a posture and stance after the kick that is difficult to connect to the next move. This problem is caused by a lack of understanding of the exact mechanics of the movement. No matter how brilliant a kick is, it's useless if you can't hit your opponent. If you fall after the attack making you vulnerable to counterattacks, you'll fear using it in real situations. Moreover, you will be even more reluctant if you are easily exposed to a counterattack after the kick. When an unsuccessful attack has been executed, most people feel unable to lead the next move, which creates a very dangerous situation. However, the variety of spinning and hook kicks is very effective and needs to be learned properly because their destructive power is enormous. Hwa Rang Do's spinning kicks are designed to solve all of these problems if they are done properly; just as a sword cut, it will either cut through the target or the sword will break upon impact. Therefore, accuracy is imperative and the speed of the rotation must be unstoppable, meanwhile maintaining complete balance and control, never to be used as a sacrifice kick. The world is going towards the mixed form of martial arts to satisfy the thirst of the educated traditional martial artists. It is only a natural phenomenon credited to the rapid and easy access of information around the globe. Hwa Rang Do has been teaching comprehensively over 4,000 martial arts techniques for the past millenniums. Here, I only have given an example of one kick. However, there is no denying that Hwa Rang Do is the first comprehensive martial art in history and acted as a touchstone for the development of mixed martial arts on the way to becoming comprehensive martial arts. Hwa Rang Do has always been the most comprehensive martial art for the last fifteen hundred years, and it will remain the most comprehensive martial art for the next millennia and beyond. Hwa Rang Do believes that the changes taking place in the technical aspect of martial arts are positive and constructive, but we must never lose sight on the essence, philosophy, traditional values, and warriorship of martial training. We are also honored and grateful to be part of this innovative change in the martial arts world. But we would not be honest to say that we do not care to be acknowledged as the provider of the example of what comprehensive martial arts should be like to cause these changes. We encourage all martial arts students and teachers to learn Hwa Rang Do and welcome them with wide-open doors. Finally, I would like to express my infinite respect and gratitude to Supreme Grandmaster Dojoonim Dr. Joo Bang Lee for making all of this possible and I thank God for giving me the opportunity to have been taught by a true Legend. Sifu David Delannoy presents his second work, focused on Jeet Kune Do and Self-Defense and built like a puzzle. It highlights and puts into practice some very important points in self-defense, such as the three phases of an aggression, body movement and shifting, opening of the visual field, response to an aggression according to law, physical destruction, vital areas, etc. With respect to the doing away of the physical threat, one of the essential principles of the Philippine martial arts is applied: the overriding of the attacking member and the importance of immediate responding to an aggression immediately when they hit us. Our response to aggression is simply proportional and immediate to the attack. Then, we configure the puzzle by adding elements depending on the development of the situation. Sifu Delannoy explains in detail the vital points and essential areas, the pinching, how to protect against a boxer, displacements and visual field, protections and destructions against simple attacks, reactions to strangulations, grips and headbutting, how to use the attacker’s body as a shield, defenses against stick and knife attacks, the use of everyday objects to defend ourselves. In this new work filmed in the spectacular landscapes of Fuerteventura, declared Natural Heritage of Humanity, we will see part of the work done by the Federation of Garrote Canario Fighting along with the Cabildo, island government institution, to promote this traditional indigenous activity, the Garrote Canario or Lata Majorera. We will have the opportunity to see in action the Grand Master Jorge Domínguez developing "Torciadas" with the Garrote, learned directly from the old Majorero Masters like Simeón Alberto. In the Corralejo Dunes, Grand Master Carlos Barrera performs several series of Garrote Canario and Mano Canaria (empty hand) techniques, bringing the martial artist closer to the application and parallelism of these traditional techniques. This natural tatami on a fine blond sand, is the most suitable place to perform Zapatas and Trabas. Also presented are several technical series of work with the Tolete Canario, adapted to the field of Police Defense. An excellent sample not only of techniques, but also of the activities carried out by the Federación de Lucha del Garrote Canario in Fuerteventura, the Island of the Majoreros.

CLASS SCHEDULING If something characterizes a good teacher is the fact, verifiable, that his students leave the tatami with a lower heart rate than when they enter ed and, ener getically, mor e toned and centered. This requires from the teacher many years of selfcritical learning of the technique, a permanent self-analysis of his personal attitudes and the responses of the human being in limit conditions, pr eferably pr eviously spending some time on the couch of a psychoanalyst, sufficient knowledge o f t h e p h y s i o l o g y, a n a t o m y a n d biochemistry of the human body and its responses throughout the day, t h e s e a s o n s o f t h e y e a r, t h e climatological and social changes. In a Martial Arts class we are working on psychophysical balance, health and attitude towards life.

iven that all natural processes and phenomena, as well as life itself are regulated by repetitive cycles, but not identical, integrated by three consecutive phases: rupture expansion - stillness - rupture - ..., the programming of a class should stick to these cycles, modifying the times of duration of the phases according to the season of the year, the anomalous climatological conditions of the day, the unforeseen or shocking social events, the number of assistants to the class, their ages, and a long etcetera that I have already analyzed in my previous books.

A class should be adapted to the cycle by distributing the following parts in its phases: - Ritual greeting to place us on the tatami and detach us from the outside world. - Gentle and peripheral stimulation of energy, blood circulation and breathing. - Stretching exercises for the arms and warming up of the joints (shoulders, elbows, wrists, fingers, femur heads, knees, ankles and neck). - Self-massage (Do-in), either in pairs or in groups. - Gentle running for a few minutes. - Waist exercises in rotation, lateral, forward and backward. - Leg openings on the floor, individually or in pairs. - Abdominal crunches. - Exercises to strengthen the arms, wrist, fist and thorax (interspersed with abdominal exercises). - Leg stretches on the trellises. - Elementary leg and arm technique, individually or in pairs. - Leg, arm or leg and arm sequences. - Katas and hyongs. - Combat in its multiple variants: free, single leg, single arm, one on the floor, .......... - Breathing exercises walking to sedate the cardiac rhythm. - Slow walking to focus the attention and initiate the phase of inner recollection. - Preparatory exercises for taichi sequences. - Taichi sequences. - Sequence of arms to place the spine and focus attention on the hara. - Meditation in Zazen position. - Ritual greeting to leave the tatami and reconnect, centered, with the external environment. Any planning, no matter how meticulously we have prepared it, should be forgotten if the energetic wave of the group does not agree with it. In these cases, more and more frequent every day given the amount of variables that globalized information and the uncertainty in which we live generate, we must put aside any preconceived idea and get fully into the wave until we perceive, through the sensations that it catalyzes in us, which is the path to follow.

The weapons of the human body... The hand! In our previous articles on the w e a p o n s o f t h e h u m a n b o d y, w e focused on the incredible potential of elbows and knees. In critical or even survival situations, it is not a lie to say that their correct use considerably increases your chances of victory. Let's continue to discover other natural weapons that the human body offers.

The potential of the hand... Contrary to combat sports where closed fist strikes are mostly used, self defense advocates other hand positioning without putting aside the use of the hand (closed fist). Let's face it, the hand has a high potential if you know how to use it. It offers a wide variety of options, which makes it, in our humble opinion, the most dangerous weapon in the human body. It has the ability to change shape according to the tasks assigned to it, just like a Swiss Army knife, well known to all adventurers.

Ethymology and anatomy... The hand (from the Latin manus, "side of the body") is an organ made up of 27 bones, contributing to its flexibility and mobility. The skeleton of the hand is composed of twenty-seven bones: - The carpus, composed of two rows of four short bones, constitutes with the radius and the ulna the wrist joint - The metacarpus, composed of five long bones, forms the skeleton of the palm and is placed in the extension of each finger - The fourteen phalanges form the five fingers of the hand

Ability to move... The bones, linked by the joints, are put in movement thanks to numerous tendons and muscles reacting to different nerve messages. The wrist allows lateral movements, extension (upwards), flexion (downwards). The essential function of the hand is prehension, the ability of an organ to grasp objects.

The innervation... The end of the fingers (the tip), is one of the most innervated areas of the whole human body. The nerves of the hand are in charge of transmitting the information of the sensations to the brain. For this reason, they are the main source of tactile information for the human being. Palmar and dorsal face... To summarize, the hand is composed of two faces (palmar and dorsal). It should be noted that the two faces are not innervated in the same way. The dorsal side is much less provided but it is it which interests us more particularly.

Open hand strikes... When teaching self-defense, it is not uncommon to present open-handed strikes as being more appropriate for various reasons. The subject here is not to take sides or to put in competition the various existing strikes. For us, they are all effective at one time or another.

Palm strike... During our many years of teaching, the palm strike has been part of the furniture... and it still is! If the efficiency is not to be demonstrated anymore, we had to find alternatives for a certain category of people, concerning its teaching.

Palms and sensitive, vulnerable, vital points... One of our principles in Krav Maga is to defend ourselves by hitting the sensitive, vulnerable or vital points of the aggressor(s). Some well-known examples:

palms of the hands on the genitals, fingers on the throat, claws (fingers) in the eyes, etc... If a certain part of the population that attends our classes have no problem attacking the above-mentioned areas, another part (not negligible), feels reluctance or even disgust to carry out these different defensive actions. Indeed, the fact of touching these different zones or even thinking about them, prevents them from using them. Of course, there is an unavoidable mental preparation to do to inhibit this phenomenon. This can take some time depending on each individual.

Better study for better targeting... The study of the hand, the analysis of the movement, the anatomy of the hand has allowed us to bring a significant number of practitioners to become familiar with these specific strikes. One of them was the key point.

A known technique... Well known to martial arts practitioners, the "punch with the phalanges" Hiraken strike. Why so much interest in self-defense for this hand position? Easy to learn, low risk of injury, can reach vital and vulnerable areas, etc... In the search for an alternative to strikes (palms, finger spikes, claws) which have a high tactile potential, striking with the phalanges has proven to be the key element. In addition to the advantages mentioned above, the areas of the phalanges used are much less innervated than the fingertips or the palm. When the phalanges are touched on the impact zone, the person knows that he/she is touching the target but does not receive as much information as if he/she had used the palm or fingers. The person is therefore logically less affected mentally. The more regular application of this type of strike by our different sections of students of all ages and genders, allowed us to observe that a significant number of those who were resistant to more tactile strikes, no longer had or had less blockage with this type of variation. The fact of having been confronted with this problem, allowed us to bring back to the forefront a known stroke that was not used enough. It also pushed us to study again what we thought we knew! A day without learning is a day lost. This way of striking has not only regained the place it deserved, but it has also replaced other ways of striking at the beginning of the teaching. What does it mean to pierce an opponent’s OODA (Observe-Orient-Decide-Act) loop? We reach the answer through the generational experience of the western professionals who revolved through the OODA loop swifter than their adversaries in theory, but have they done so in practice? Does this stand the test of history? Would it not mean that the fastest opponent would always prevail? There are factors beyond speed such as agility and breadth of thought as displayed in General MacArthur's haste push of the X corps into Korea which ended up pulling the Chinese into the conflict resulting in numerous defeats during the end of 1950. Swift movement is but execution. The process of choosing the action and tactic is of equal importance as defeats of forceful swift actions as enacted by General Lee in Gettysburg. Gunslingers know it is not the fastest draw but the righteous aim who wins the day.

THE OODA LOOP Colonel John Boyd, an innovative aviator of the US air force, developed an iterative feedback model, what is now known as the OODA loop, discerned from his days dogfighting in the Korean War. It has seen use in both military and civilian trades and is also used to hone athlete's responses and decisions alike. The process holds constant revolution between the following stages: Observation, which leads a participant Orient on possible options, Decide on an appropriate course of action Act on that decision.

Avi Nardia People tend to overlook observation. The evolving and myriad skill to be aware and discerning of constantly changing environments. All stages of the OODA look are intertwined as the changing sensory input and mental picture alter our perception of the previous moment. Fluidity in decision making is a skill emerging from all phases blended.

DETAILED OODA LOOP A vital stage in understanding the OODA Loop is to look at it through the lens of the scientific method. In this perspective, decisions are hypotheses, and actions are essentially the process of testing selected hypotheses. If the quality of the information is imperfect, or if one’s orientation to the resultant knowledge is flawed, then speed may not be useful; it will only hasten an inappropriate decision or action. In other words, faster might not be better. Like a dancer who loses their balance, the solution is not to go quicker, but rather to stop, recover, and get back in tempo. The same applies to the OODA Loop. To employ it effectively, a participant must understand timing as well as the broader concept of rhythm.

Avi Nardia TEMPO, SPEED, AND TIMING Tempo has been defined by many from official publications to renowned martial artists. One of them was Bruce Lee whose definition of tempo as “that little fragment of time which is the most suitable to accomplish effective actions.” In this definition, successful combatants sync their speed, so their actions coincide with those of their opponent’s, with the goal being to be able to act at “the exact psychological and physical crux of weakness in an opponent.” This specific rhythm in which movements are executed could be called cadence, and to apply this concept, it helps to look at combat through the idea of beats. Beats are commonly found in the arts, such as meter in poetry or the time signature of music. More broadly, a beat could be considered as any action or moment of change. They are present in fights as well. Consider the one-two combo in boxing, a simple count that integrates rhythm into a punching drill. In such a combo, the one count is a jab with the lead hand, while the two count is a back hand cross. The drill can be made more complicated, with threes, fours, fives, and sixes added in to represent hooks and uppercuts on both sides, but, whatever their number, the punches are the beats. A ballet instructor counts in “one-and-twoand-three-and-four.” To represent the space between each beat which enacts the same rhythm of the punching combo. We are most vulnerable in between each beat when we calibrate and when balance and tempo can be shattered..

HITTING THE OPPONENT ON THE HALF-BEAT The goal of each fighter is to sever other's OODA loop. Have them miss a beat. Speed is just one factor here. The psyche's capacity to recognize opportunities assessing fluid scenarios and as Bruce Lee wrote speed in delivering a stroke will lose most of its effectiveness unless the stroke is properly timed.”

In practice, it takes more than speed as at a certain point this approach becomes divorced from one’s opponent and their actions. Instead, decisions and actions should ideally happen in a way which sets up the opponent and makes them vulnerable to having their rhythm disrupted. Bruce Lee identified two traditional methods by which a fighter could use their cadence to accomplish this setup, the first was to adopt slower than normal actions in the lead up to a decisive attack. In this application, after an opponent has adapted to our cadence, they are vulnerable to sudden accelerations in our actions. Alternatively, the lead up could be at a normal or quicker than normal speed, setting up a final attack at a slower cadence. This strategy effectively forces the adversary to commit to an action, allowing a combatant to watch the reaction and strike once the adversary is misaligned. Bruce Lee labeled these methods as “striking on the half-beat.” Military application of the OODA will have greater complexity; however, the principles remain the same. Advantage is met not by cycling through the process as rapidly as possible as this approach supports dissociation of one’s own decision-making process from that of one’s opponent. Instead, the OODA Loop should be used to identify those little brackets in time when the opponent is most vulnerable to having their rhythm broken to enact their disruption of rhythm. In other words, the OODA's loop is maximized when it is used to identify and exploit the opponent’s half-beat. Of note, this is consistent with Boyd’s own emphasis on the importance of the orientation stage of the OODA loop.

Avi Nardia A recent practical example of this strategy was the September 2019 drone attacks on Saudi Arabian oil facilities, which briefly wiped out half of Saudi Aramco’s production capacity. In this case, the timing of the attacks may have been more important than the physical effects, since they occurred in the lead-up to Aramco’s initial public offering.[ What’s more, the longer term impact of the attacks may have contributed to reduced investor interest and an Aramco valuation that did not meet its initially intended target.[ At the very least, the attacks succeeded in compelling Saudi Arabia to focus on restoring its production capacity, in effect breaking their rhythm and forcing them to stop, recover, and get back on time In addition, Iran, widely believed to be responsible for the drone strikes, found increased influence with the Houthis in the aftermath of the attack, which was precisely what the Saudis had been hoping to prevent by entering the Yemen War. The timing of the attack, then, could be argued to have benefitted both the Houthis and Iran by catching the Saudis on a half-beat.

THE TAKEAWAY Boyd’s OODA Loop has long been held up as a means to reduce reaction time and enable quicker and more streamlined decision-making. While greater speed is clearly an advantage in combat, viewing the OODA Loop through the lens of faster is better over-simplifies the model, and prevents combatants from realizing the full potential of this decision-making framework. In the deepest part of the system, they have evolution as a cor nerstone and this evolution can only be carried out by the Masters and guardians of the style. They constantly revise both their techniques and their work patter ns, seeking the greatest effectiveness and efficiency, while still resembling, at least in part, what their predecessors taught them.

I am sure you have heard it in every debate, whether it be among staunch practitioners or among mere amateurs. Well not so much from the former, these kind of people don't usually argue, they have little time and they use it to improve themselves. Returning to the subject, in our research on what styles could be part and what parts could cover each system, we went a little further. We studied different parts of the world, sometimes traveling, sometimes listening as people talked about how violence was different depending on what part of the world they came from. Our studies led us to know that there is something called the three heritages. In this case, what mattered to us was how those inheritances affected fighting ability, regardless of the style practiced and which one would mark a greater predisposition, not only for fighting, but for a certain character as a fighter.
