t the dawn of the “Covid19” era, we find the unequivocal signs of the existence of a subspecies of the “Homo Parco-sapiens”: it's the “Homo Smartphonensis”. Characteristically hunchbacked (the result of his continued effort to read his electronic gadget), he generally walked head down, which gave him his peculiar hump. This idiosyncratic feature, together with his hypertrophied thumbs, allow us to infer his addiction to the so-called smart phones, which were such in an inversely proportional way to the reduction of his everyday more and more diminished intellectual capacities. Nevertheless, homo smartphonensis, sluggish by nature and little inclined toward physical exertion, was able to walk without raising his eyes from the screen, although this led him to constantly stumble on his fellow creatures. An infinite cult of the image inclined them to use applications where the decline of the verb was only comparable to the exorbitant abundance of self-inflicted images, known as "selfies", where, in unequal battle, competed among themselves for the silent acclaim of the others, with the greeting from their era (a thumb up, or a "I can tweet too"). There was no situation exempt from the possibility of being immortalized by homo smartphonensis, claiming for himself achievements and status that he generally did not possess, or the glories to which

Paraphrasing J.M. Barrio, “In order not to fall ill, you have to strengthen the immune system from your own means and not with a philosophy of assistance from the outside. No ally can make you invincible." It is never too late to learn and be updated with the new developments that are circulating including Martial Arts, innovative ways to improve on our skills, speed, knowledge, power, techniques, reality based and foremost, mixed martial arts UFC, where we put all our goals, ego, experience, knowledge on line. It is reality, no games and just play, fight and prove ourselves. We need to show our

ability, power and discover our opponent that he is out there to prove himself with no tricks, no gimmick, no cheating. We just have to do it as real as possible. Facing our opponents with all we have and stand out fighting with the ability to survive agility, powers and devastating techniques of our opponents, everything can happen in a fight. Now you have a chance to discover who you are and what are you made of discovering your power and most of all your agility. Can you stand beyond your weakness? Are you strong enough to move on beyond your weakness? At the end of every fight you discover new tactics of survival and stay tall. Martial Arts teaches us this element of survival through fighting, practice, respect and most important will of power. A good master instructor can make it happen. You should be open minded and learn all you

can, practice and practice, again. Never get tired of something you love, in the long run it will pay for longevity and healthy life. THE BASICS OF TEACHING METHODOLOGY IN MARTIAL ARTS The phenomenon of expansion of various martial ar ts and spor ts acr oss the world is of such intensity which is hard to explain even to psychologists, sociologists, different sports journalists and other professionals. Because of this vast expansion, the pr ocess of teaching and educating persons by means of exer cise or training includes a number of different experts. Unfortunately, among many high quality experts, martial arts masters or martial arts trainers, there are those who do not correspond to such a profile, i.e. those who do not know or respect the basic principles of the teaching methodology in martial arts.

The basics of teaching methods In order to subjugate the process of exercize to our health, it needs to be programmed, in other words, scientifically grounded. If we leave exercize to chance and if it was the opposite (not programmed and not professionally guided), this process could potentially be equally harmful as much as beneficial. Sadly, the fact is that, objectively speaking, every programmed activity does not have to be favourable for our health. This can often be noticed in sports training of different martial arts when the goal is not to improve health, but only to have a more successful sports result. The first important condition of a proper way of training lies in the precise definition of the goal or the purpose of training in a way that it is attainable for the individual. So, every person needs to be submitted to a clearly set initial testing in order to define his or her physical abilities. Such testing is necessary so a programmed and led training process could follow because this is how we can see in what way does the individual deviate from a general criteria or norm. If we do not have this information, training itself becomes aimless and, to some extent, dangerous. Once we have established the starting point of the individual and calculated and measured the amount of his or her deviation from favourable criteria or norm (which are inevitable in order to be successful in a certain martial art or sport), we can proceed to programme the training process. First, we need to clearly set its goals and purpose so we can define the amount of work, i.e. the number of trainings per week. Also, we need to determine the number of trainings per day - does the person need one or two training sessions, as well as the duration of each.

We must precisely calculate the intensity of training for each individual. This relates to the exertion which will cause the best transformative processes, i.e. the changes in the body of the individual who is training and advancing to a preset goal. Determining the intensity should be a daily routine for the instructor. Exercize itself does not suffice if we do not know how much and how to approach it. Many people train for months, even years and still do not see changes they have hoped for as well as any major results. This is because they are not aware or informed of the intensity of the training they should be using. Every instructor - expert should strive to find an optimal load for each individual who comes in to training or wants to exercise. The principle of gradualism will definitely be of help. It commands that every person, according to his or her current abilities, gradually increases the level of training intensity as well as the number of trainings. That way the intensity will always be equally distributed and the instructor will be able to follow the information regarding the effect of the work more easily. He or she will also know how to make corrections to the exercise in accordance with the current form and

Martial Arts needs of every individual, all in order to attain the set goal. It is important to stress that the normal biological systems can't stand a continuously large volume of workload. Proper exercise which affects the motor and functional abilities lies on the physiological basics of interplay between the load and the recovery. The term exercize or training covers the planned and programmed physical activity and the preparation of the individual. It is divided into physical, technical - tactical, theoretical and psychological (moral, volitional control movement,etc.) preparation. Principally, the physical preparation of an individual entails the process of development of his psychomotor and functional abilities. It is further divided into general physical ability which task is to develop a general individual's form and special physical ability which is directed towards the development of skills specific for a certain martial art or sport. No matter the type of physical form, it will be treated according to the development of an individual's psychomotor skills: the development of strength, speed, precision, agility, flexibility and balance.

Speed is the ability to perform one movement in as a short amount of time as possible, i.e. performing a larger frequency of the same or different movements in a certain time span. Speed is a psychomotor skill whose coefficient of innateness resolves around 90%. For that reason, there is a general opinion that we can make little or no difference to the improvement of this skill. We can affect the development of speed in a younger person, i.e. in a child up to 10 years of age. Later on, we can improve it only if we continuously work on the perfection of the technique and bring it close to automated perfection. This surely helps to build up strength. Among all different types of strength, martial arts and sports benefit most out of repetitive and explosive types of strength. Precision is an ability that is very important in martial arts and asks that we analize information, localize the target, its distance, movement and time to reach it all in a matter of a hundredth of a second. The development of balance depends on the function of the vestibular system so it is very difficult to influence its improvement. In practice, this ability manifests itself in the ability to lose balance or the skill to bring it back as soon as possible. The improvement of agility can be divided into several existing types, for example, hand coordination, leg coordination, coordination of the torso, rhythmic coordination, the speed in which complex motor tasks are completed, the speed of learning new movements, reorganization of stereotypes and mobility. Many martial arts as well as sports set high expectations for this skill so, in the course of the training, working on the development of general and special coordination is addressed.

This skill is one of the essentials for martial arts training. Developing flexibility isn't a big problem to take on, especially if it is addressed from a young age. For a high level of martial arts mastery as well as individual's sports achievements we primarily need to follow up on his or her physical predisposition and character traits. Many young people train in sports centers and, after some time when they see that they cannot master an advanced technique in a short period of time, decide to give up training. It is necessary that a person trains for about three years so he or she can acquire the first level of mastery or start to achieve a certain sports result. Every person, especially if he or she is young, martial arts or sports instructors need to stress that his or her patience is paramount if they wish to achieve a certain goal.

Technical - tactical preparation includes, as its name suggests, training of technical as well as tactical activities of a certain skill or sport. It also addresses other various modes of exercize that influence its development. This mode of preparation is one of the most important ones, in both training of a certain martial arts technique as well as in accomplishing a good sports result. Alongside with technical - tactical preparation, psychological preparation is also pivotal. Training psychological endurance relates to the indirect and long - term general and specific way of training and exercizing. It affects motivation, character build - up and adaptation to stressful situations, all thanks to planned activities. Theoretical preparation is also a part of the wholesome sportsperson's training although it does not take up such an important place as other modes of preparation. Theoretical preparation is more important for instructors so they can plan the training programme of each and every trainee or sportsperson more easily. Each training or exercize, no matter its tasks or uniqueness, has a couple of parts that follow each other in order to meet the principles of gradualism of physical, intellectual and emotional workload as well as the principles of change of their volume and intensity. Those are the introductory, preparational, main and final parts. The introductory part of the training starts after forming a line up, greeting and informing about the basic tasks that need to be accomplished by the end of the training. It lasts for 5 - 10 minutes, the trainees start to walk lightly after which various modes of running, jumping and games follow. It ends with sprinting in short sections. The preparational part needs to set up the trainee's metabolism for the workload and activities which will follow in the main part of the training. This part of the training can last for a different amount of time, depending on the intensity of the main part of the training, its longevity and its basic characteristic. For example, in a training that lasts for 90 minutes, it usually lasts 20 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 30 minutes, whereas in a training that lasts for two hours, it can take up to 30 minutes.

Martial Arts The main part of the training serves to accomplish the main tasks of the training. It is usually divided in two parts so that two different goals can be acquired. Another reason is to change the training's dynamics and make it less monotone. The main part lasts according to the complete duration of the training, i.e. if a training lasts for 90 minutes, it can last up to 50 – 60 minutes. However, if the full training lasts for 120 minutes, it can take up to 70 – 80 minutes. It is especially necessary to divide it into two different parts if the training lasts for about two hours. The final part of the training lasts for around 10 minutes and its focal task is to calm the body down (bring back the functions of certain physiological systems into normal), relax, analyze the training session and discuss it. The problem of training organization is connected to the tasks that should be attained in its duration as well as the diversity of the categories of trainees (age, sex, knowledge, i.e. belt). In practice, there are four different options on how to organize a training: frontally, in a group, individually or in a combined mode. The frontal mode puts all the trainees in the same position, they do the same exercize and the same tasks. It is usually used in training with the same age, sex or knowledge level group. A lot of instructors use it because it is the only mode they know of and know how to apply, no matter the fact that sometimes they have a mixture of children, adults, women, advanced trainees, i.e. masters and beginners in the same group. Of course, the frontal mode cannot bring very good results with such a versatile group. It can make sense only if the trainer leads a homogeneous group of trainees or sportspersons.

The scarcity of the number of exercize machines or the lack of trainers - assistents (the trainer of a certain group), attaining two or more goals (for example, one group is practicing katas, the second is working on its technique, the third is doing sparring training) are also some of the plausible reasons. The group mode is especially advisable in situations where the trainer needs to work with several different categories of trainees or when he is simultaneously acquiring a number of different basic tasks. However, it also has its negative side (apart from, generally, being worse than the individual mode) - one group's exercizes and movements can distract the other group which leads to a drop of concentration.

The individual mode is the most efficient mode of training. Here each individual spends his or her time working on his own training programme, independently from other trainees. The trainer has more control, adapts the programme and motivates. Because of the growing need for individual programmes (for more trainees at once), this type of mode is the most difficult to organize. It is especially applicable in training of top sportsmen or advanced trainees. In practice, the individual mode is usually combined with group or frontal modes in which the instructor devotes 5 - 10 minutes to the individual, depending on the number of trainees per session. Lastly, the combined method incorporates a combination of group, frontal and individual modes and, because of this, it is very beneficial and favourable in practice.

The role and personality of the instructor In the long - term process of sports specialization or direction towards a master vocation, different factors will affect the trainee. Among them, the most important and most basic one is his instructor or coach. The effect of the trainer on a trainee can be so big that, in certain moments, he or she becomes his replica. This is why the instructor's personality cannot be taken for granted, especially if he or she is educating trainees on how to use certain "deadly” martial arts skills or techniques.

The basic principle of a successful instructor is that he knows a certain martial arts skill or sport in its entirety. Also, it is advisable that the trainer is always present during the training, that he or she is physically prepared, that he or she has a certain level of education and that he or she is constantly improving his skills and knowledge. For example, a good instructor should posses knowledge in didactics, training methodology, anatomy, physiology, psychology, sports medicine, biomechanics, kinesiology, statistics, pharmacy etc. Every good instructor, primarily, needs to set a good example for desirable behaviour as well as a valid lifestyle to a person he or she is educating.

In order to turn a master into a good instructor, he or she needs to have certain qualities, for example, a high level of intelligence, a high capability to persuade and motivate, he needs to show leadership, advocate the well - being of his or her students, trainees or sportspersons, realistically assess his value and the value of his students, aim towards perfection and prove that he or she is an expert in the field to other instructors. Having these bases, a good instructor will be able to build up the success of his pupils or to achieve a sports result, as well as the general result of his or her club, his or her school, i.e. martial arts centre. A good instructor can be recognized with the help of the fact that he or she prepares for a training session, meaning that a detailed plan and programme is being prepared in advance. Such an instructor will probably take certain notes which he or she will use in order to remind him/herself on specific techniques that were planned to be shown in training. A good instructor will keep track of the specific amount of time needed for each phase of the training session. Also, he or she will not avert from the preplanned training schedule and will, thus, attain a certain goal. In other words, he or she will not leave the session to chance, he or she will already have a training plan prepared and it will successfully lead him or her towards the goal of the training.

It is necessary that an instructor follows and checks the trainee's pulse, i.e. his or her cardiac frequency and, by using these means, keeps track of the optimal training intensity. So, for example, if there is a trainee who is 20 years old, his borderline cardiac frequency should be calculated by subtracting his age from the maximum cardiac frequency of 220 heartbeats per minute (220 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 20 = 200). If we subtract 25 from this result, we reach an optimal training intensity for this person which is 175 beats per minute. The heart rate monitor is advisable, but not necessary. The pulse (heartbeats) can easily be measured by putting pressure with a finger (palpation) to the neck artery or on the trainee's wrist. It is usually measure in a half - minute interval and the number is multiplied by two in order to calculate the number of heartbeats per minute. A good instructor can be recognized due to the fact that he will never boast with his achievements, but also won't belittle other instructors, other martial arts or sports. Such an instructor will impose him/herself with his or her knowledge, his or her skill and if he or she thinks that things cannot be achieved without a fight or discussion, he or she will give up and find a better post. A good instructor will never prohibit his students (trainees or sportspersons) to leave him for another instructor, if they so wish, no matter how much time, effort, money or knowledge he or she has invested in their development and education. He or she will always respect their desire to leave or their decision to seek for further advancements someplace else. A good instructor will not be interested in the color of your skin (race), sex, age, your religion, financial status, but your will and motivation to learn and master certain martial arts or sports. You can recognize him or her by the fact that he or she is very kind when talking and interacting with other people. Don't be fooled and think that this shows weakness, on the contrary. A good instructor knows how to control his or her emotions and temper and will not let his ego, vanity or uncontrollable aggressiveness overcome him.

No matter the working conditions or a currently weaker financial situation in martial art or sport he or she teaches, a good instructor will always be successful. No matter which martial art are we talking about, if you have such a person behind you, chances are you will also follow his or her steps. A good sensei (sifu, guru) or instructor will raise his students and trainees to become good people and champions in his or her centers. Bad or fake senseis, i.e. instructors won't - they are simply not able to do so. A good instructor will always say that he or she still has a lot to learn, to perfect and to do. Bad or fake instructors will say that they know everything there is. Unfortunately, students of such a person will, eventually, become bad themselves. Because of that, choosing a good instructor, i.e. choosing a good dojo or martial arts center is paramount in raising future generations of trainees and sportspersons. As much as it is hard for a beginner or a young person, i.e. child to find a good instructor for a certain martial art or sport, it is difficult to find a good student or trainee who has big potential. When such a situation happens, their progress has almost no limits. Then and there is where top masters and sportspersons develop. Style makes fighters: the 5 types of Thai Boxer Muay Thai at its highest level may be compared to a chess game: both contestants make use of their bodies and minds to out-smart each other. Body and mind must work as one if a fighterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s full potential is to be developed. Every Nak Muay (Muay fighter) is a unique entity; in fact it is impossible to find two who share exactly the same characteristics. One of the common mistakes of trainers with little experience is to train all students in the same way. Many times those coaches use the same standard schedule to train fighters that have very little in common in terms of physical and psychological attributes. A fighter with a definite tendency towards sidestepping and counter-fighting cannot be trained like another one who instinctively stalks his opponents and looks for infighting. Similarly, some thai boxers are natural kickers while others are at ease at grappling range: a given training system may be good for the former and detrimental for the latter. A good Khru Muay (Muay teacher) should be able to detect the strong and weak points of his students and train them in order to enhance their attributes as much as possible. Furthermore, a chain is as strong as its weakest link: similarly a fighterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s weaknesses must be exposed, analysed and someway corrected. Working with human material is extremely difficult because everything is fluid, nothing stays the same for a long time. Training fighters is an ever changing job: only a vast first-hand experience can teach a Muay Thai trainer to cope with the infinite

nuances of the process of turning a would-be thai boxer into a real champion. A good starting point is to check the characteristics of a new student according to 5 broad categories of Muay Thai “stylists”: every boxer has a natural tendency towards one of these 5 types. However, a trainer’s job is to

combine the main attitude of a fighter with some additional features taken from one or more of the other categories. For example, a strong natural puncher will need some extra skills taken from the kickerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s technical expertise to become really competitive. Most Muay Thai teachers accept the following 5 categories: the puncher, the kicker, the grappler, the sapper, the all-r ounder. Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s see the characteristics of each category.

1. The puncher • Physical attributes. A powerful puncher usually has strong shoulders and arms. • Favorite range. A puncher is a middle range fighter. When he is too close or too far from the opponent, his weapons (punches) lose a lot of their power. Therefore, in order to drop his bombs he is forced to maneuver to be at the only useful distance, all the time. It is clear that his opponents will do their best to keep him at bay with kicks or will try to grab him and wrestle, thus preventing him from throwing forceful strikes. • Complementary techniques. Usually the puncher will complement his arsenal with a few kicking techniques. As a matter of fact, most punchers are also lethal low-kickers: leg kicks are used to hurt, confuse and off-balance and they pave the way to powerful head or body punches that very often can lead to a dramatic knock-out. • Classic example among Thai fighters: Kaosai Galaxi

2. The kicker • Physical attributes. Physically, the best kickers are tall with long legs. • Favorite range. This kind of thai boxer is the typical out-fighter. Long range is the distance where he is more at ease because straight kicks and swing kicks are his weapons of choice. Swing shin kicks to the liver, neck, temple or nape are ranked among the most lethal blows a human being can deliver. If one of these kicks hits you with enough power, your chances to stay on your feet are close to zero. However, if the opponent manages to close the gap and stick to the kicker, he will deprive the leg strikes of most of their force and will probably defeat him. • Complementary techniques. In order to full fill the gaps in his fighting strategy, a kicker must enrich his arsenal by means of a short or middle range weapon. Famous kickers, like Pud Pad Noi were also feared for their prowess with elbow strikes. When the opponent has managed to close the gap and is starting to work, the “complete” kicker quickly cuts through his adversary’s defences with one or more fearsome elbow slashes. A serious wound or a quick stoppage is often the expected result. • Classic examples among Thai fighters: Pud Pad Noi Worawoot

3. The grappler • Physical attributes. Good grapplers are equipped with strong neck and back muscles. Muay Thai grapplers favour neck clinching instead of body holding. Therefore, the best Muay Thai grapplers are tall with long arms, physically different from greco or freestyle wrestlers. • Favorite range. The grappler’s attitude is to stalk the opponent, closing the gap with quick forward steps or with jumping attacks to cut the distance as fast as possible. A grappler is typically an aggressive fighter: when he is far from the opponent or when he finds himself at middle range he can be outsmarted by a good kicker or a strong puncher, respectively. • Complementary techniques. In order to safely close the gap and start to grapple, a pre-emptive strike is used most of the times. The strike can be a head or body punch or a middle swing kick. Sometimes, one of these complementary techniques becomes a second point of strenght: this is the case of Samson Isarn, a typical example of Muay Thai grappler who also possessed a hard punch that, after his career as a thai boxer, allowed him to become international boxing world champion. Classic examples among Thai fighters: Diesel Noi

4. The sapper • Physical attributes. Sappers come in all sizes and shapes. No specific physical attribute is needed to unleash effective elbow strikes. Technical prowess is all that’s needed to become an expert in this style. • Favorite range. This stylist is the typical short range fighter. However, since the elbow is a concealed weapon, before using it a thai boxer has to fight the fight without showing his intentions. When the opponent gets caught in the sapper’s web (he stops focusing his attention on the expected elbow attack), the elbow specialist will make his magic trick. The opponent will find himself badly cut or lying on the mat without even understanding what’s happened. • Complementary techniques. A typical beginner’s mistake is to try and throw elbow strikes form kicking or punching distance. Before elbowing, a fighter must be at the right (short) distance and to get there he must be sufficiently skilled in kicking and punching. When the situation (i.e., the distance) is right, instead of grappling he must seize the moment and strike before the optimal position is lost. Classic example among Thai fighters: Pol Pra Pradang

5. The all-rounder • Physical attributes. Just like sappers, all-rounders come in all sizes and shapes. No specific physical attribute is needed to develop a well-rounded style. However, genuine all-rounders are rare and most of them are destined to become great champions. • Favorite range. When a fighter is good at kicking, has strong punching techniques, can control and eventually outsmart a grappler and know the subtle art of elbowing, no range is forbidden for him. Sometimes an all-rounders is also a heavy hitter: such a fighter belongs to a class of his own and is as rare as a diamond. Trying to stop a fighter who possesses the technical skill that allows him to fight at all ranges and also owns an arsenal of devastating power strikes, is almost impossible to do. • Complementary techniques. An all-rounder is a complete fighter: however, everybody has a preferred body weapon that he will tend to use to put an end to a contest. The main weapon will be supported by other weapons/tactics with the final goal of putting the opponent in the right place, at the right time and knock him out. Krav Maga I.M.A.D.S ... An individual learns when he transforms his knowledge, behavior and skills in order to find an effective response to the problem situation he is confronted with. Learning, therefore, involves change (Wauters-Krings, 2009). When we practice Krav Maga we can say that we are in a field of physical and spor ts activities, where we can distinguish motor learning on the one hand and social learning on the other. Learning the front fall on the forearms in Krav Maga is motor learning. Close protection work in a team involves social learning by having to learn and respect the rules of teamwork, living in a group when traveling, etc.

Krav Maga I.M.A.D.S ... The individual and his motor skills ... Behavioral changes related to learning are the result of changes at the CNS level (Central Nervous System). The adaptations are observed at the level of neurons and neural circuits. Some nerve connections appear while others disappear. The very high plasticity of the brain is the basis of learning (A.D.E.P.S. 2013) The development of an individual's motor skills is based on the use of various learning methods such as: • By explanation: using verbalization to make it easier for the lear ner to understand the task requested. This process is very important in the first stage of learning: The Krav Maga instructor will take care to explain and show the criteria for achieving a good front kick in the beginner. • By imitation: which consists of reproducing a model (therefore, the quality of the model is essential). Here the trainee reproduces the hitting sequences presented by the instructor, takes an example of movements during shadow-boxing, imitates changes in guard positions during preparatory fights, etc. • By repetitions, which consists of repeating a motor task a large number of times. This method appears to be essential in all learning. The Krav Maga practitioner repeats a straight punch from the neutral position dozens of times per session, as well as the different sequences of strikes before carrying out a fight with his opponent. • By trial and error where the practitioner is plunged into a problematic situation and must, without instructions, find a solution. Example in Krav Maga,

learning to defend against multiple aggressors. The instructor can suggest these situations without giving an explanation, leaving the practitioner to operate by trial and error. Only after a certain time, when the practitioner has (or hasn't) discovered does not discover) any answer, will the instructor offer his advice and explanations. â&#x20AC;˘ By association, which consists in learning by making links between groups of behaviors. In Krav Maga, the work of pivoting the pelvis can be considered during the defenses while standing, on the ground or against a wall. â&#x20AC;˘ By induction, which consists of integrating the technical and tactical foundations from a process of deduction, following various motor experiences. example, performing a direct punch from the neutral position, with or without using the pelvic rotation, makes it possible to become aware of the importance of such movement. â&#x20AC;˘ By combination: Combined learning seems to be the most effective methodology, for it combines several methods among those mentioned above. As explicitly demonstrated, there is no single recipe, but their ingredients are already well identified. Ingredients, as we like to call them, form the common basis of all professional training in physical education and sports. The best quality of the instructor of Krav Maga I.M.A.D.S. is his ability to instruct using identified learning methods, as well as the way he wisely uses the fundamental principles of the Krav Maga system.

Krav Maga I.M.A.D.S ... concern for understanding Motor learning is an internal process that brings about permanent changes in behavior which are not directly observable and that result in improved motor skills. (A.D.E.P.S, 2013) Unlearning a bad gesture and learning the right gesture ... This internal process takes place in the brain and cannot be directly observed. On the other hand, its consequences are and, in most cases, go, in the direction of improving the body language and sports performance. However, it should be noted that in certain cases (unlearning a bad gesture and learning the right gesture), a transient deterioration in performance may be observed (Famose, 1990). It's not uncommon to see Krav Maga practitioners who have acquired some efficiency despite poor technical performance. The modification of gesture will inevitably lead, at first, to a de-structuring of the practitioner's landmarks and a loss of regularity. As instructors, we all find practitioners disoriented and frustrated by the required modification of some technical gestures. Phrases like "I used to be more efficient, I feel like Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve lost my sensations!" are heard sometimes. When this situation arises, the teacher must make the practitioner aware of the fact that he or she has the necessary skills to be able to access a never-achieved efficacy.

The motor act takes place in 2 phases: • Phase 1: Information processing • Phase 2: Execution of the motor program Phase 1 can also be broken down into 2 phases: • Phase A: Identification (information reaching the brain) • Phase B: Selection of a motor response The movement programming is then recorded in our brain. The execution of the motor program triggers movement. The nerve impulse starts in the brain and runs through the spinal cord reaching the level of the muscles involved in the movement. The motor response shall provide a result to be used to confirm or correct the motor programming. For the evolution of the practitioner every instructor must include in his teaching as much «feedback» as necessary. So what better than knowing how learning works? Wing Chun from Hong Kong and Foshan. Why so different? Surely many of those who follow this column have sometimes wondered why the differences among the various W ing Chun schools in Hong Kong. The vast majority affirm, without blushing, that Wing Chun Kung Fu is a style that was born in Hong Kong and evolved ar ound the world. It is clearly a mistake and denotes a rather important lack of knowledge of the history of Kung Fu. When I started traveling to China about ten years ago, few understood my interest in visiting and meeting masters from different branches and approaches. The vast majority of fans are only interested in the version of their own school or lineage, and sometimes they even use a rather derogatory way to talk about the work of the others. Nothing new under the sun. It occurs in Wing Chun and, I believe, in most traditional combat systems in Southeast Asia. But it still seems sad to me ...

n these first trips I had the immense fortune of meeting the main Wing Chun referents in Hong Kong and my questions were always the same: Why these huge differences among Wing Chun practitioners? What is the reason for the technical differences even at the level of "forms" among the students of Grandmaster Yip Man? Do you think that Wing Chun, as a system, is evolving or is rather regressing? Simple and clear questions that not always were answered with the simplicity I expected. I must however acknowledge that Yip Man's most â&#x20AC;&#x153;veteranâ&#x20AC;? students always responded in a much clearer and more concise way with their opinion. They had no doubts about it. I understand the security and conviction of the one who already lives without "debts", and at certain age, though politely, prefers to be absolutely clear in his assertions and statements. But it was not always like this. And that was the main reason why I decided to go one step further and visit Foshan. Foshan is the birthplace of the Wing Chun system and some other South China fighting systems. The large number of systems and evolutions of those combat systems that developed in the place, at a very specific time, generated

an area unmatched in terms of Chinese Martial Arts. Everyone knows the Shaolin Temple in North China and few (outside of China) speak of the Canton as a veritable quarry of illustrious Martial Arts practitioners. It was there that the term "THE CANTON TIGERS" was acted out. It is completely wrong to think that it was in Hong Kong that this style of combat arose, simply because GM Yip Man, for various reasons, ended up living in that exciting city. It does seem true, though, that if it weren't for this reason, Wing Chun probably would never have become the style it is today. After all, reaching the rest of the world is easier from Hong Kong than from “deep China”. So, as I often say, everything happens for a reason.

What seems undeniable, despite the latest trends in the world of Wing Chun, where in a paradoxical way there is an attempt to underestimate the figure of Yip Man, is that this style has in the Master the most important figure in its history. No one had ever managed to spread his art like him. Even without having the slightest intention of doing so (Yip Man was completely opposed to teaching Gweilo: Foreigners. Anyone who was not of Chinese race, was called a “round-eyed demon”). But when you analyze the history, both of Yip Man and the Wing Chun Kung Fu system, everything seems to be surrounded by a "mist" that hides the true evolution, and prevents us from understanding some things that, despite being obvious, are not addressed in the study of the system. Sometimes, “dumb” questions are what open our perspective and allow us to understand some things that seem complicated, but actually are quite simple and natural. Yip Man traveled to Hong Kong twice. The first to study English when his financial position (he came from a fairly wealthy family in Foshan) still allowed him to do that sort of things. It was customary at the time, among the wealthy families of Canton, to send their offspring to study English in Hong Kong. In addition to the obvious reasons in the

acquisition of a second language that would allow commercial relations, speaking a foreign language conferred "cache" and high status. In this early period, Yip Man was still a young man completely focused on practicing Kung Fu, and it is said that it was right there when he met Leung Bik (son of his sikung Dr. Leung Jan). By chance or fate, both ended up practicing together for a good season and when Yip Man returned to Foshan, many of his companions perceived such a great change that they even accused him of having abandoned the practice of the Wing Chun system and made "Changes" that had taken him away from the purest Wing Chun Kuen style. This sure will sound familiar to you. In the current age, when someone like me introduces a change in the training method, he is directly attacked by all the defenders of the purest and most traditional system. And that is at least "funny", because when someone is really acquainted with the REAL history of the system, knows well that there was never anything like a pure and traditional system. Well, Yip Man already had to deal with things like that too. I understand there are some elements that are never going to change, no matter how long it takes... I realize that not too many people are really interested in these questions of history, or about Yip Manâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life, but believe me when I tell you that all these things are of great interest that go far beyond the anecdote or stories for Wing Chun style geeks. What I

try to explain with this reasoning is something that I always wondered about and that I never came to understand until I got to know the different cultures: Foshan and Hong Kong. Jett Kune Do Every living thing depends on another species to survive and provide for its own needs. Indeed, this is called the food chain. If we take the example of the human species, we realize that without water, or oxygen, or sun, or animals ... mankind would have disappeared a long time ago. We are always dependent on each other. Without the intervention of others we do not exist. For example, without the plants that produce oxygen from carbon dioxide, we would die of suffocation. The same is true of knowledge.

Each individual and living species brings their experience to those around them. By observing, we learn and we evolve. We can learn for example how thanks to a bird to move in the air. This is how man was able to understand lift and thus create the airplanes or any flying object that allows us to move around the world and later perhaps across the universe. Thus, knowledge can only be acquired through an exchange and cooperation between each living species, even at the microscopic level, through molecules, cells etc.

Jett Kune Do The boundaries are set by ourselves and locking ourselves into a rigid style will only produce one result, namely, never being able to fully express yourself. Knowledge above all allows us to express ourselves, to interact with those around us and above all, to be constantly evolving. Evolving allows us to never stagnate and thus adapt to the world in which we live. Without evolution, we remain anchored in certainties and techniques which are no longer adapted to the modern world and to the constraints of present life. So wanting to fight with a sword against a gunman will only be possible from a certain distance. The modern world has changed the way soldiers fight. Nowadays, you shouldn’t run with a sword in front of a man who shoots us with a bursting weapon of war, without being almost certain to die before having taken a few steps.

Knowledge of the contemporary world has made it possible to positively develop methods of combat on the battlefield. Observation and questioning have changed our approach to these issues related to the evolution of weapons of war. So knowledge makes us progress and learn from our mistakes. Without accepting our mistakes we stagnate and don’t advance. To advance, it is also and above all necessary to know oneself. Learning to know ourselves through martial arts allows us to find out and accept ourselves as we are. Without accepting our limits, we can never exceed them. In fact, knowing ourselves and therefore accepting ourselves allows us to constantly know who we are.

Indeed, the inward-looking attitude of nations and cultures, only produces chaos and hatred of others. So not knowing others only triggers contempt and consequently hatred. The latter results in the desire to destroy what we do not understand. We have thus witnessed many genocides throughout history, through ignorance of other living beings. For example, by claiming that men were only "savages" you are depriving yourself of the right to dispose of their lives and to destroy them without any guilt. We see years later that these "savages" have so much to offer us and that their knowledge of nature and respect for all living beings deserves our attention and training. Battojutsu and Iaijutsu: speed? BATTOJUTSU - 抜刀術 Ba - 抜 When alone it reads Nuku, which means to take, extract, throw, draw.

To - 刀 On its own, it reads Katana, which means sword. Batto Jutsu - 抜刀術 Means the art of drawing the sword. Hayashizaki Jinsuke Shigenobu (1542-1621) was reputed to have received divine inspiration that led to the development of his art, called Muso Shinden Jushin Ryu Battojutsu. In a more romantic version, Batto simply means "drawing the sword". The common point of both schools, as in many other swords schools that dealt predominantly with the cutting of the swor d, was that this art was practiced in the form of Katas. he question is much harder than it seems. The problem starts when trying to define "effective" and considering what "result" is desired. Of course, in Kata you have no opportunity to prove your technique in combat again and again because, as in Kenjutsu, there's no chance to modify your movements in response to those of your opponent. BattoJutsu and "Bajutsu" are completely different. Even if you wanted to exemplify only the translation of taking out and the art, excluding the "To" of katana, you can get confused. There is an aggravating aspect of the term Bajutsu in the arts of war to refer to an art related to chivalry. Fleeing from these written questions, the truth is that expanding a technique to the point that it becomes an inexhaustible source of resources is not so easy, neither for the student nor for the teacher. For many who are impregnated with “Do”, speed may not be a strong point. But, it's known to the practitioners of "Jutsu" that the technical perfection that aims to surpass in combat the strength of the opponent, requires a more defined knowledge about the characterization of the form applied with the sword. The determining part of the technique that involves “Saya Biki” represents in short the expressive detail for a speed technique. This in turn must be in harmony with the right hand that respects the limits required by Saya Biki.

Speed in sports as in the war arts is manifested in different ways, and is classified into two groups: • Pure speed: depending on the CNS and genetic factors, it can only be minimally trained, and it occurs in sports only in highly short and explosive performances or with minimal external resistance. WEINECK (1999) subdivides them into reaction speed, movement frequency speed and action speed. “Pure speeds can be noticeably improved, especially through training in the beginner to the most mature phase.” (WEINECK, 1999: 382). • Complex speed: it depends on other functional capacities such as strength and resistance; we can say that it lies in the borderline region between speed and resistance or strength. According to WEINECK (1999), complex speed comprises resistance to fast force, speed of force and resistance to maximum speed. “The possibilities of developing them

through training are much less restricted than the development of pure forms of speed.” (WERCHOSHANSKJI, 1998 apud ELLIOTT et alli 2000). “Speed is a factor of physical performance, which suffers visible losses with age, so the sooner you work, the better your efficiency” (WEINECK, 1999: 382). ISRAEL (1977) apud WEINECK (1999), emphasizes this issue a little more, admitting the possibility that the definitive profile of the physiological bases of velocity is established very early. What was not developed in time cannot be recovered later. These findings highlight the importance of an early education on this fitness performance factor. ZAKHAROV (1992) complements the position of the aforementioned authors, emphasizing that an untrained adult can, through adequate training, improve his performance by 15 to 20%. He also highlights that other cases are exceptions and that the differences in the distribution of muscle fibers and in the innervation model are genetically fixed and training can only modify the volume (increasing the cross section) or the coordination capacity, but not the percentage distribution of the fibers. We can observe that the previous positions have the same meaning, and that the last author believes in improving a percentage of the training performance. In the case of Battojutsu, after acquiring immense familiarity with the sword, and thereby expanding the ability to safely perform techniques with great efficiency, it is necessary to be aware that speed alone does not guarantee perfection. In fact, speed is vital for training “jutsu” when it comes to real confrontations. However, a high speed of execution with a low quality of the same is of no use, since certain points to be considered in the real form cannot fail to exist in the mind of a practitioner. And among these factors are considerations regarding human anatomy and the minimum effort for a cut to be successful. In addition, it is necessary to consider the fact that on battlefields the armor Yoroi - would greatly modify the technique to be used. The cutting location should be well chosen and techniques that have leverage, such as Chudan Makkōgiri or Chudan Kesagiri, would provide certain advantages if the Ma-ai allowed it. In addition, drawing the sword at a high speed would be no use if it was performed at the wrong time. Besides speed, Battōjutsu involves a strategic content that could define a confrontation in an intelligent and sensible way, without great risks. After all, the blade of a katana is reputed for its sharpness, and its cuts, however light they might, without protection of armor would deeply wound any part of the body.

IAIJUTSU - 居合術 There was a time in which establishing a difference of reasoning between this or that style was a matter of grandeur or specialty. Curiously enough, Iaijutsu, like Iaido, is described with three Kanji that have different meanings, and do not literally mean "The art of drawing the sword".

I - 居 IRU - "to be" The “I” Kanji (character) can also be read as itte and ai, also as awasu in the phrase “Awasu do ni do kyu do itte do ni de Tsune”, which translates as: "Wherever you go and whatever you do, always get ready." Being prepared is not just having a conscious state of awareness, but having rigorously trained it so that, if necessary, a decisive technique can be used to end a conflict. With a sword, of course, the cut is deadly. Therefore, the study of Kata is very difficult. A-合 Its reading in On-Yomi is GOO / GAT- / KAT-. In Kun-yomi reads a (u) / -a (u) / a (i) / ai- / -a (i) / -ai / a (wasu) / a (waseru) / -a (waseru which means: to fit, unite). (*) Jutsu - 術 Its reading in On-Yomi is Jutsu and in Kun-Yomi it is Sube, so its meaning is art, technique, skill, means, tricks, resources, magic. (*) Logo: Iaijutsu - 居合術 (*) Kun-yomi is the Japanese reading of the character while on-yomi is based on the original Chinese pronunciation. In this way, Iaijutsu was translated as the art of drawing the sword, practiced with combat techniques, which are taught during training. Many curiosities exist around Iaijutsu, but also a lot of junk. Practiced today as an automatic device to draw the sword, the arte of Iaijutsu favors self-discipline, enhances coordination and improves posture. In most styles, actual cutting techniques are valid, but for the practice of Iaijutsu for purposes of defense or war, accuracy is absolutely necessary. Some versions claim that the sword arts we know today probably started with Iizasa Choisai, the founder of Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu. This school included the use of many weapons, such as the spear and the throwing of knives. It is important not to confuse it

with Battojutsu, which has in its translation a more approximate meaning to "drawing the sword". Overcoming and, above all, gagging all these demons of desire that we carry within, is quite difficult. Forcing them to keep silence and remain still is not an easy task, but with patience we managed to get through and so we went on with each of the notes on the musical scale. In a higher octave we proceeded with the same effort and so, little by little, facing the various inhuman elements that we carry within us, we strive to muzzle them all at once in the forty-nine levels of the subconscious and then the mind stayed quiet and in the deepest silence. Practicing the Iai in deep concentration requires something more than simply performing movements with a sword. Drawing the sword perfectly and quickly implies finding the emptiness of the moment. Perhaps this is implicit in Metsuke's exercise. It is believed that the practice of Metsuke is inextricably linked to the third eye.

As small as a pea and in the shape of a pinecone - hence its name - the pineal gland is considered as a third eye, as it has the same basic structure as our visual organs. Until recently, it was believed that it was a stunted organ, an undeveloped eye, with undefined functions. Even so, it aroused the interest of scientists who discovered functions both physical and those related to the psyche and paranormal phenomena. In the West, the important function of this gland was described in the book “The Third Vision” (ed. Nova Era), written by an Englishman who adopted the pseudonym of Lobsang Rampa. French philosopher and mathematician René Descartes (15961650) also bowed to the pineal fascination. In his famous "Carte a Mersenne", written in 1640, he stated that there is a gland in the brain that is the place where the soul is most intensely fixed. Religions also regard the third eye as a center of spiritual awareness. Many people who have never practiced the art of the sword, when they hold in their hands an Iaito or even a Katana for the first time, are affected by a different state that causes different sensations. Some cry, others feel too much happiness. For many this is a sign of a reencounter. For the Japanese, who are reincarnationists, it's common to believe that they are facing the reincarnation of some important warrior spirit from the past.

The KMRED group, which in recent years has been focusing its work on the problems of the standing up combat at short-range, presents its fourth DVD, in which it's discussed the integration of LETHWEIâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s "tools" into its "R.E.D. Training" methodology. As usual, it is not about "SHOWING OFF" the athletic and even cinematic skills of its instructors. Nor is it about demonstrating thousands of different techniques that make practitioners dream. One of the many components within its Four Divisions of study, Wae Gong (External Power), the physical curriculum is what is commonly known as Joint Manipulation. Utilizing the joints of the human anatomy with proper application of angles and force to control an opponent through pain/pressure compliance. Although a person may easily enlarge and strengthen their musculature, the ligaments and tendons connecting the bones and muscle to bones are difficult to strengthen. Hence, joint manipulation when properly applied can be highly effective with minimal strength and effort. It is also one of the best ways to control and deter and aggressor without inflicting severe damage.

When most people hear the word Kyusho, or the words Pressure Points, it is one of two things that come to mind ... Self Defense or a healing modality such as Acupuncture or Massage Therapy. In each instance, they are correct. There are some who focus mostly on the self defense aspect and other whose focus is more into the healing. I personally know of several people who trained with me and became so excited about manipulating the Pressure Points for self defense that they enrolled in Acupuncture classes, Massage Classes and Chiropractic Classes. Each area of study requires extensive focus on the mechanics of the body and how the practitioner can "assist" the body into healing itself. This is not an end all be all and each patient must be accountable for their health and lifestyle habits. This video will focus on how we can use the same 5 points for both healing and self defense. This is where knowledge of anatomy, basic principles of motion, and developing a sensitive touch come into play. Pressure Points have multiple uses for both health and self defense and can be a great complement to one another. For each to be effective, the practitioner must develop a quiet, relaxed mind, which can assess each situation to hopefully bring about the result desired.
