Tenshin-ryū is a complete Martial Art that includes Kenjutsu, So-jutsu, Naginata-jutsu, Kusarigama-jutsu, Yawara-te (Jujutsu) and Hozoin-ryu Kage-ha Jumonji So-jutsu. Because the Samurai were public and not private figures, they had to always be ready to unsheathe the sword and fight at any moment. Therefore, in Tenshin-ryu, we learn Batto-jutsu and Kenjutsu techniques, but it is more important to know how to take control of the battle by taking advantage of enemies, rather than killing them. In the Tenshin-ryu style, different martial disciplines and weapons are used depending on the scenario, such as Yari, Naginata, Tachi and Kusarigama-jutsu. Reading is an indispensable exercise, we are sick of hearing it, as we are sick of seeing that it's a habit in extinction, a custom in free fall. People's minds, subject to the acceleration process of our days, are so much saturated that they prefer taking out rather than putting in; that is, taking out, even if the product of such elimination doesn't deserve by itself a second of anyone's attention. However, the background noise of the planetary verbiage, fills those tweeting messages, whose only true virtue, precisely their shortness, is more a gift to

the empty authors of these messages, who generally proclaim their illiteracy, as well as the stupidity of their egomaniacal and simple contents. The much needed reflection, without time, becomes completely impossible, because it's compressed, harassed by multiple circumstances which we cannot ignore, and which all respond to a very particular energetic climatology, in which Fire energy explodes and camps rampant. Everything seems to conspire against the lack of time, because everything is responding to that general tendency of this planetary phase. Therefore, each symptom framed in this panorama becomes more and more understandable, but no less intense, thus forcing a functional autism in most citizens. There is little time (the new currency) and for that reason big companies, banks and corporations, have decided that we work for them for free, how? Simply by forcing us, in a surreptitious manner at times, shamelessly at other times, to put our time at their disposal: Make your reservation on-line! Make the transfer on-line! I challenge you all to calculate how many hours of work, before in the hands of third parties, you do today for them. A new silent slavery monopolizes our reality: engulf the time of others. Years ago, making this magazine involved the contest of a number of technicians, specialists and even artisans, a work that thanks to the Macintosh in front of which I am sitting, I am able to do myself, almost all alone. All these specialists became expendable, certainly, but I did not win any freedom, because every time I must dedicate more hours to conclude aspects of a job that before others made for me.

The result ... Once again you have it in your hands! (or on your screen) ... My request: Be as benevolent with this author as implacable with the enemies of your personal and own sanity, freedom and consciousness, those who stalk us all, dancing with impunity everywhere, and in addition, most of times going unnoticed. Giving them a name and pointing them out with your finger, apart from being aware of that, is an exercise that is not within everyone’s reach and it

Wonder how Forgotten names as Moshe Feldenkris as talking on Israeli Martial arts ? The days after the First World War, times were hard. A young Ukrainian immigrant named Moshe Feldenkra moved to the land Of Pre Israel, it meant being ready to fight for your life at any moment. Knowing how to fight was not a sport or an exercise fad, it meant survival. Young Feldenkrais had a scientific mind that sought sound, testable skills he and his neighbors could use to defend themselves. Japanese jujitsu had exploded as an international phenomenon in the early 1900s. Feldenkrais and his peers worked to learn jujitsu techniques for real life application in the street. He published a book on Jujitsu that was based on what he had learned fighting and teaching others and was intended as a training tool for the Haganah, or Jewish defense forces . Much of his work was incorporated into the system that became known as KAPAP - Krav Maga today. Feldenkrais left for France to study engineering and physics in Paris. There he met Judoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s founder, Jigoro Kano, in 1933. Kano encouraged him is study Judo. Feldenkrais learned Judo from Mikonosuke Kawaishi Sensei earning his Shodan in 1936 and a Nidan in 1938. He published several books on Judo including his most important Judo work: Higher Judo Feldenkrais and Kawaishi founded the Jujitsu Club de France in 1936. This organization eventually became the Federation Francaise de

Judo et Jujitsu (FFJJ) in 1946. The FFJJ was instrumental in the creation of the International Judo Federation which oversees sport Judo throughout the world. Paul Bonét-Maury, first IJF Secretary-General, was one of Feldenkrais’ students. Relatively few have heard of Feldenkrais, but his impact on Judo has been large and significant as also Im sure on Israeli Martial arts. So why don’t we hear more about Moshe Feldenkrais in Judo and most in Israeli Martial arts ? Thats why I set as agenda in Last 20 years writing on Israeli Martial arts to remind names that some how not appear in Israeli Martial arts and Im sure these names Inspire me as a kid doing first steps in Martial arts study their books Feldenkrais became involved with judo when he met its founder Professor Jigoro Kano, in Paris, September 1933thie event changed of Feldenkrais’ thinking. In his famous 1981 interview about martial arts, Moshe recalled that Kano had said to him that judo is “the efficient use of the mind over the body.” At the time, Moshe had thought that this was a funny way to describe a martial art. During their initial meeting, Moshe was introduced to the concept of "Seiryoku ZenyO" - minimum effort, maximum efficiency. Kano challenged Moshe with a judo choking technique. Moshe attempted to free himself using the technique that had always worked for him, but this time it did not help him. As Kano described in his diary, “I grabbed him in a tight reverse cross with both hands and said, “Try to get out of this!” He pushed my throat with his fist with all his might. He was quite strong, so my throat was in some pain, but I pressed on his carotid arteries on both sides with

Grand Masters both hands so the blood could not get to his head, and he gave up”. Imagine a small Japanese man, at the age of 75, subduing a strong, young man of 29. This incident impressed Feldenkrais and changed his approach to the use of his own body. Feldenkrais began to study judo and in a relatively short time was promoted to black belt. Feldenkrais became more than a skillful practitioner of the art; he proved to be a unique judo teacher of the highest quality. Kano had a great deal of faith in Moshe. Supported by Kano’s authority and through his own considerable abilities, Moshe became the leading judo teacher in France. Moshe’s influence on the development of the martial art in France was extraordinary, earning him the title “Pionnier du Judo en France”. As Moshe became more expert at Judo, he learned from and cooperated with the Judo master Mikinosuke Kawaishi. This partnership gave Feldenkrais the background to later write two Judo books. He wrote in the forward of Higher Judo, “I wish to express my gratitude to my friend and teacher of many years, Mr. Mikinosuke Kawaishi, 7th Dan. The figures in the illustrations in this book represent him and myself”. After escaping Paris during the Second World War, Moshe served five years in the British Admiralty. He continued to teach judo and also trained the soldiers on his base (Unarmed Practical Combat, 1942). After retiring from the service (1945) he moved to London and joined the Budokwai Judo club where he studied

judo there under the great master G. Koizumi. Moshe admired Koizumiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s skill. He often mentioned Koizumi in later years while teaching Awareness Through Movement. Feldenkrais published the first Hebrew self-defense book, Jiu-Jitsu and Self Defense (1930). He based this work on a behavioral study of human beings that gave rise to the concept of using unconscious or instinctive responses for self-preservation judo/jujutsu was an art of self-defense. Returning to Better Judo â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the editor of the Budokwai Bulletin invited Dr. Feldenkrais to compare the judo practiced in their club to the judo practiced elsewhere. Dear BUDO lovers, this third world-wide BUDO MASTERS event to be held in the Eternal City of Rome is a unique opportunity which we celebrate every two years, to gather and meet in person Masters, professors and instructors of the most different styles, in addition to sharing and enriching the culture and fraternity of Martial Arts. WingTsun Wing Chun 3.0 The question is, have we studied in depth some phrases that we've been repeating like a mantra for years?

Have we ever stop to analyze the meaning of these technical/strategic statements? Or, on the contrary, we've just limited ourselves to accepting them, taking for granted that they are correct without asking ourselves any further questions? Have we ever considered the deep sense of the Wing Chun Kung Fu fighting principles or, rather, we have tur ned the system into a hodgepodge of techniques and strategies without the slightest logic and with little chance of being effective?

t's for sure that the "enlightened ones" of this system will have their answers even before reading the article. It's their style. They usually replicate their arguments like a prayer, in the same way as in the typical Castilian expression "jack, horse and king ..." (that is, same old same old). They talk about Kung Fu, but nothing goes through their brains. Directly from ear to mouth. Fanatic people with little capacity for reflection! Those are, without a doubt, the people we care least about in this reflection that I launch now for all those who, in the first place, are interested in trying to improve our beloved Wing Chun Kung Fu system. And for that, the first thing is to think about fighting arts. Yes! Fighting Arts. Any attempt to move combat systems away from their origin and the purpose for with which they were created is a mistake. It's like trying to use a knife to eat soup. Knives were created and evolved to cut, and have nothing to do with the fact of taking liquids. In the same way, Martial Arts were created with a unique objective: that of developing the ability to fight better than your enemies; and an important detail that often goes unnoticed: to know what are the appropriate technique and strategy that will allow you to face and overcome stronger enemies.

It goes without saying that the evolution of society, along with the good fortune of living in a period of peace in most countries of the world, allow us to expand the use of the Martial Arts systems and enjoy their incredible physical, mental and spiritual benefits. Thus we can affirm without any doubt that practicing Martial Arts consents us developing our spirit of sacrifice, perseverance, respect, overall health, functional longevity, etc. But we mustn't forget that this progress is but the “side-effects” of the serious practice of the Fighting Arts. In this regard, I want to start a series of articles reflecting on the absolute truths that we have repeated for years, inherited from our masters, and in turn from the masters of our masters ... Too often we make statements without considering what they really tell us. I also want to video record some of these tutorial articles, which will be published on my online training platform www.taowsuniversity.com for those who want to delve into what I'm exposing. Today I want to start by launching a series of questions to reflect on. I am going to ask you to think for a while before answering. It's a very interesting exercise. THE DOUBT

Let's start ... • What does the phrase "If the way is clear, move forward" really mean? Have you ever encountered in a real combat someone so foolish as to open his center and lower his hands so that we can give him a lot of blows? Personally, in my over 30 years of practice I never had that luck in real combat. • What is the real meaning of the principle "if the force is greater than yours ... give in ..."? • What happens if the enemy's strength is not superior to mine? • Can bodies absorb force? (understood in terms of struggle and not purely physical) • How long do I pursue my adversary if I follow the fourth principle of the Wing Chun system? • Are all system techniques fundamentally hitting techniques? What is the best way to hit an opponent? • Do we know the different applications of the “hands of Wing Chun? (different positions of the hands in defense and attack)

These few questions, which surely will make reflect those who have a real interest in developing the capacities and understanding of the Wing Chun system, will serve as an interesting starting point for this “thread” that I am opening for the next months and formations. Today we will start with the first one. For Wing Chun practitioners, it's something quite well known. From the beginning of our practice we recite the FOUR Fundamental Principles of the Wing Chun Kung Fu system: 1. If the road is free, move forward. 2. If the road is closed, "stick" to the opponent. 3. If the opponent advances, yield. 4. If the opponent steps back up, chase him. Let's talk about the first principle ... If we stick to the obvious, to what everyone accepts as fundamental, we understand that the principle may refer to the fact that your enemy makes a circular attack and opens the center, either seeking power, or simply by ignorance of combat techniques, thus opening his guard to strike with full strength without waiting for the response or counterattack. In this case it seems obvious to understand that the obligation of a Wing Chun practitioner is to advance in a straight line and hit until the enemy surrenders. However, this is rather a rare sight in real combat scenarios. As I mentioned in previous paragraphs, it's very difficult to find something like that. The common thing among practitioners of any fighting art is that they learn two defensive or protective positions: - Front stance, closing the center (as in Wing Chun)

“Winning the center is only a small advantage. That advantage must be materialized in an imbalance or control of the weight and structure of the adversary. Otherwise we will enter the exchange of blows with someone equal or stronger than us.”

- Side stance, by placing the strong arm / leg in the rear position, in order to generate power and offer less impact surface to the adversary. Actually, neither one or the other is better. Both stances offer a series of advantages and disadvantages that will have to be judged by the practitioners themselves to assess what interests them at all times. But the common factor in both "guards" is that they close the body central area and therefore the access to weak points, sensitive to blows. Nobody adopts a guard position for any other purpose. Now, if we talk about Wing Chun, the guard is totally frontal. The arms occupy the center (center line) and they are placed in a position that allows us to immediately reach and defend any area of our body. The first principle of the system doesn't refer exactly to that (it's too simple). As everything in Martial Arts, is an opinion and, of course, if you will allow me, I'm going to state mine. Finding the center open and moving forward with decision is perhaps the simplest interpretation, but on very few occasions we will find that with trained adversaries. So when will we apply the first principle? Whenever we manage to WIN the central position. As long as we can dominate the center with our hands on the center line, we must move forward and attack. Now, this can be really difficult at times. Frequently, we must strongly defend our position using our main tool: Chi Sao. Although, even after winning the central position, the untrained practitioner will make the second of the most common mistakes: hit directly. That is, once the central position is won, we must hurry up and hit directly with the intention of reaching our adversary before him. In my experience, this is not fair because if we understand combat always with trained opponents, and with equal or even greater weight than ours, reaching first doesn't assure us that we can finalize him. This is why, at first, some small details should be added. For example, a phrase by K. Tokitsu (founder of the Tai Ki Ken style) that says something like this: "...You first win and then you hit ..." Simply masterful! Winning the center is only a small advantage. That advantage must be materialized in an imbalance or control of the weight and structure of the adversary. Otherwise we will enter the exchange of blows with someone equal or stronger than us. It definitely doesn't seem too interesting. So once the center is controlled, the next move is to use the structure of the adversary with our Chi Sao skills and the DISPLACEMENTS, so as to make him COLLAPSE. Once the position and control are won, it's the time to hit the enemy (or finalize him with any of the fantastic techniques of our technical arsenal). The end? No! Unfortunately, WINNING is not as easy as many think. Once all this has been achieved, you have to choose the WEAPON with which to finalize, and achieve the required precision in order to do it efficiently. This will depend on the enemy's reaction to the loss of his position. For example, if he turns around too much, I’ll look for his back. If he gets strong enough not to be moved, we’ll have to sweep or hit his legs in the bottom. And if he offers us an open target, we must hit with power and PRECISION. We won’t have too many chances to hit someone who is really good, that's why accuracy is, in my opinion, one of the most important and perhaps least trained attributes As you can see, the first principle is a little complicated. Seminars had one of those “Aha” moments when Melody Johnson, Roland Osborne and I presented at the first ever martial arts business summit held at the prestigious Harvard University back in May 2019. This was history in the making. Never had a martial artist stood on these hallowed grounds to speak and teach. We each took turns delivering our unique brand of critical thinking on topics we have devoted our lives to, to elevate the martial arts industry. Melody spoke on the science of child behavior and how we can best serve them as instructors. Roland shared his innovative process to create a team of martial arts athletes to better our schools and the world. I professed on “WHY” culture beats strategy in building a purpose driven business of sustainability and growth. I had already been producing my own event, IT’S TIME LIVE! for about four years in San Francisco. Martial arts school owners would come from all over the world to experience my “disruptive” brand of learning. I was cultivating a movement that attracted martial artists who believed we could do better business through service. I had been to Germany twice and it was after my first presentation that Stefan professed, “Brannon Beliso is the industry leader who defines the position of a professional martial arts school in today’s society. Brannon’s thought influenced many of the German school owners with his legendary speech in Munich in 2014.” As soon as I returned to San Francisco, I messaged Stefan Billen of Befufsverband Kampfkunst, the leading consultant in Germany. We were the first martial artists to ever present at Harvard University.” He congratulated me and applauded our achievement. I continued, “I had presented after Melody and then as I listened to Roland the “aha” moment hit me. Now all I had to do was get Melody and Roland to join us.

Bujutsu Langendernbach/Germany From the international airport of Frankfurt/Main we took the highway and passed through the highlands,small villages and deep forests to take the direction of the Hishiryô-Dôjô, a place which means “beeing in this certain moment in this certain situation in this certain circumstance”. We were curious and left early on this

saturday morning to discover this place. After one hour of drive we arrived in a silent village. The weather was wet, the fog showed his face and the colours of the leafs were so intense that it was a nice play for our eyes to see the visual differences between grey, brown, red, green and yellow – a wonderful play of nature when we suddenly stopped in front of a big, white, and it seemed typically local, house. Around this house a japanese garden:

Bujutsu bamboo, pines, with moss covered lanterns and a japanese archway in red colour, which showed us that we arrived at our destination – the home of Bujutsu mokû ô ryû and the place where the Holzmann family lives. We were welcomed by Soke Wolfgang Holzmann and his youngest son Julian Holzmann – both were already waiting at the door and were helping us with our luggage. They wanted us to call them by their first names and enter, together with us, into their house. We arrived in the big and white stairwell, nothing special, but we could already see some small details, like japanese paintings or japanse woodwork – here the same impression as at the outside: a mix of worlds, we always found japanese culture inside the occidental and occidental culture in the japanase – an impression, which would follow us many times along our stay. Wolfgang, he wanted us to call him by his first name, opened the door - we arrived at the highest floor of the house, which meant that it was here, where the space of the Dôjô began. This first moment was one of the most important we remembered of this time – we felt like if we were in another world – the house was still the same, but the feeling was different. Most of the family students would tell us the same, that this moment was very special – special for everyone in a different way, but special. On one side an office with lots of literature in many languages in it, on the other side our room, still asian.

Now Wolfgang and Julian entered the biggest place, which we already perceived before and wanted to see since the beginning – the Hishiryô-Dôĵo. We entered with respect, as it has been shown before by father and son and we felt surprised, perplexed, flattered and proud at the same time. This Dôjô always was the dream of the family: living the dream to teach their proper martial art at their own home – the old and traditional way as it has been given from generation to generation in the old Japan. We were at a place where Europeans live, but where the old japanese culture is alive at the same time and this is, what Wolfgang was telling us about: “Our aim is to take the values of martial arts and adapt them to our occidental culture. For us the techniques of martial arts are many keys to open up the door to body and mind.” With this sentence all our first impressions were so intense, that we were asked to take our time arriving, time to refresh and asked to just knock at the door on the middle floor in the house when we would be ready. We really needed this time and think about where we were and what would happen on these days. We did take our time and went downstairs to knock at the door, which has immediately been opened by Simone Holzmann, the wife and mother of this family. She welcomed us as heartly as Wolfgang and Julian, then showed us what she prepaired : a very good looking meal with beautiful decoration. We sat down at the table, all together, and had a very good time – we had the impression to be with friends, not with strangers. During this time we talked about our experience in the martial arts world, they listened carefully and answered with their experience – a beautiful exchange, but when Wolfgang is speaking there is always this sort of wisdom in his voice, which you just want to listen and learn, knowing that this man has more than 50 years of experience in martial arts and that he grew up with it. “As a retired soldier I want to help people leading a better life and show soldiers how to fight, but also in healthy way – for theirselves, as well as for their families”

He says that this seems a lot, but that they practice each art for itself, without mixing it. The base of this whole art is the Bushidô, the way of the warrior/samurai and Zen. The moral values and the importance to unite body and mind in this modern and occidental world, he tells us, is what really counts for this family – taking one part and putting it into the other to make one, just like the principle of Yin and Yang. We were not sure what to think about, because it seems very difficult to believe this. This is the reason why we were curious to see what a training may look like. After interesting conversation we went out to see the beautiful nature of the surroundings. Wolfgang and

Julian told us about this very central region and about the importance of nature in their martial art and their philosophy. “Take a look at all the beautiful colours around and especially this leaf and think about the fact why it is how it is: red and ready to fall. What happens when it falls? It goes down to earth and, over the time, becomes the base for another tree, that may grow. This tree develops other leaves, which are beautiful and color theirselves into red at their time.”, Wolfgang explains. He then says what he means with this example by seeing the parallel to our lives – we come and go. That‘s it. We needed time to think about this, but beeing in this beautiful nature was the perfect place to do this.

Bujutsu We went back to the home of the Holzmann family and had a very nice evening together, where we talked a lot about the place of philosophy and tradition in the martial arts and that it is a true way of life, even in the world of today. The next morning started with a small breakfast, a pause, and then the big moment we were waiting for: the training, where we wanted to see in practice what we talked about. Students were coming by one after the other and they were like friends with each other and welcomed us as warm as the family did before – a very nice feeling. We felt as we were a part of it directly and were looking forward to participate and see what a training looks like. It starts with respect and tradition. Soke Wolfgang Holzmann, Shihan-Daî Simone Holzmann and Shihan-Daî Julian Holzmann are in front of the Kamiza and the students – it seems that we had the honour to participate at a lesson, given by the whole family. Simone started with her fitness program Moder n Tai Power (Karate techniques with music) and Power Yoga – we supposed that everyone was warm enough to continue with the next part of the training. Wolfgang specialized himself this time on Aikijutsu – very quick techniques, effective and full of energy. We felt that this

Bujutsu man has been doing this his whole life, every mouvement is in a perfect shape, without seeming difficult. The students profit of the fact, that there are three masters in the Dôjô, everyone has its own method, so all can profit of this. Everyone was smiling, laughing and making funny faces and sounds, due to the short pain during the techniques. Julian ended up this lessons with a meditation in which we had to focus on our different senses in order to develop each seperately. This training was very complete and we saw that this peaceful family are warriors in their hearts and share their knowledge to lead their students to self-reflection and to show them how to find their best way to be in our society. We had the impression to be with friends and have a good time together, but in the end we felt that this training really was about living moral values, physical and

psychological condition, health, tactics and strategy. It was aferwards that we understood this, because in the moment itself, we just lived the moment and did not think one time about something different – we were in this certain moment in this certain situation in this certain circumstance. We finally understood the name of the Hishiryô-Dôjô and why they called it like this – we even experienced it. That was a key moment and we thought about all our dicussions we had with the Holzmann family about philosphy and the world of today. We were able to put theory and practice together and did not even feel it in the moment of the training itself, but after it. This is exactly what the students told us before and this is the reason why they started living this life theirselves – it makes them a better person and they feel complete in their daily life.

Bujutsu

After saying goodbye to our new friends, we refreshed ourselves and went down to speak about our impressions with the family during having a cup of tea. The last time we did that we were very sceptic about the practice, but now that we participated we were just listening to the experience of the masters and their projects. They have a Dôjô in Angers/France, which is growing more and more – as well as the national and international teachings. “Seminars are a good possibility to share knowledge. Everyone practices its own art and we can contribute to optimize it with our art. Thanks to the differents martial arts we live, we know differents points of view, helping us to understand the needs of our worldwide friends and show them other possibilities or bases, which make them even better in their own teaching or in their own practice. As a retired soldier I want to help people leading a better life and show soldiers how to fight, but also in healthy way – for theirselves, as well as for their families”, GM Wolfgang says. It is sure that this normal family lives to help people and the base for it is the way of the warrior and their martial art Bujutsu mokû ô ryû. We finished the day and left the day after as friends and thought a lot about our time at this home, Dôjô and international headquarter and that our first impressions of the local house and the japanese garden, the modern architecture and the japanese Dôjô, the german family and the japanese martial art weren‘t still the same anymore. The Holzmann family showed us that one belongs to the other and that we all can decide about ourselves – they chose the Bushidô and their martial art Bujutsu mokû ô ryû as their way of life and teach it by their living as role models.

Jeet Kune Do Our martial journey Joining a martial arts or combat sports club is an increasingly usual process. Nevertheless, few people know the great journey they lead off when they came for the first time ever in a dojo. This journey can be filled with joy and sadness sometimes, is worth living because in the end when we take stock of our journey after many years of practice, we notise that despite some disappointed, this journey allowed us to meet wonderful people who, in a sense, are part of our family. Indeed, we tie strong bond through time with some people that it is worth going through all the hardship of the world.

Jeet Kune Do

y hardship, I mean time of doubt, questioning, failure, betrayal, etc. It is about betrayal and wonderful encounters that I want to stress through this

article. Betrayal is extremely common in our daily lives, both professionally and personally. When I started martial arts and discovered all the philosophy and respect instilled through the teaching of our arts, I would never have imagined that betrayal could be part of the world of martial arts. Now, after years of practice and teaching without break, I can swear betrayal is unfortunately very, even too present in the martial arts. The world of martial arts, which in principle should develop respect, humility and so many other qualities towards our partners and teachers, became in fact a springboard that allows to express a narcissism and selfishness, which had previously been gangrenous. only our societies, but nowadays through the world of cinema (with all the action films in which the martial arts show only their violent aspect and not the respect of others and life), we have seen professors eager for recognition and students who think they are gifted and much better than they are. The latter do not tolerate no rectification nor help from their teacher, to whom they want, moreover, to lecture them on morality. Indeed, these teachers and some narcissistic and egocentric students no longer want to learn martial arts but just shine and reproduce the movies they have watched in the cinema.

Jeet Kune Do They think they are gifted who need only themselves to progress and just highlight their power verbally over others. This observation brings us to a sad conclusion: the betrayal done to others is without any remorse. It is very sad to see how this has become a full sport for some. Sport in which teachers or students practice lying and flattery with a disconcerting relaxation.

They flatter you by calling you master, by describing you as the best teacher in the world, that they will never betray you, etc. Indeed, I realize that the more a student flatters you or claims that he will never betray you, the more you can be sure that one day he will stab you in the back with undisguised pleasure. You will skip from the best to the worst teacher, because additionally to betray you, this same student will slender

Jeet Kune Do you by trying to destroy your reputation as well as your person. The best answer to these behaviors, of course, is to not answer and ignore those people who will one day be unmasked by the people to whom they have told their lies. Through these frequent betrayals, I discovered what I called martial friendship.

Indeed, this martial friendship expresses itself as a friendship with a expiration date. You will have the friendship and the attention of these people only as long as you will be useful to them, after you will never hear from them again unless one day they have heard, need you. The most amazing thing is that these people who betray you and slender you, never hesitate to come back

to you, without even apologizing, as soon as they need your help. If you have the misfortune to refuse to help them after what they did, they pretende then to be a victim trying to discredit you again. In spite of these betrayals which are unfortunately more frequent, I think that our martial journey is worth living and we must appreciate these hardships that develop us and make us stronger. Indeed, if our journey was punctuated only with good times and victories, how could we enjoy these same good times?

If life were only happiness, how could we enjoy that same happiness because we could not measure how lucky we are to be happy? It is therefore essential to suffer and to experience painful hardships in order to develop oneself and thus to become stronger and able to protect oneself against future students who will come with bad intentions. Nevertheless, you should never change your benevolent nature because of the dishonesty of some. It will always be necessary to give a chance to new students and discover over time whether they are sincere or not.

Jeet Kune Do Even if the suffering is frequent during the years of our martial journey because of some people, we have to never lose the flame that was born when we first stepped on a tatami. It is this flame that must make us hold on tight and that allows us to remain always present in order to try at our small level to continue the respect and all the rules transmitted by our teachers. Indeed, if we let it go and we get dishearten, which will continue the essential values passed on through our arts for centuries? Do we really wish one day to look back, to see, if we stopped teaching, that the martial arts have passed away or have been harmed because we quitted teaching because of a handful of dishonest people, who are in fact martial arts dealers. I want to end here by saying that even if we are betrayed by too many dishonest people, meeting extraordinary and sincere people is worth all the pain we will experience during our martial journey. As it is so often repeated in the Jeet Kune Do as in the arts of combat, to find the best, it is necessary to look in the crowd. So to find these uncommon pearls that are some students, who will remember you all their life and will give you news despite that they stop training for some, it is a pleasure certainly painful but especially an honor to let these sincere people be a part of our martial family. Thank you to these sincere students who allow us, teachers, to continue our journey by discovering other uncommon pearls in this crowd, year after year. Being optimistic is the only way to continue in this world polluted by ambition, lies, treason and selfishness. Moreover, we must never judge anyone, not even the students who betray us; everyone must live with the weight of their own actions. We all make mistakes, so let people assume and live with their choices. Our journey is so long that it is never impossible for roads that have separated to intersect again over time. Forgiveness is a martial arts core value as excuses after making mistakes. Unfortunately, excuses are rarely used by pride by overweening people who put their pride above everything. Stay true to our values, allows us to continue our journey full of pitfalls; to progress calmly and honestly at our own pace and to be able to look at ourselves with pride in a mirror, without being ashamesd after betraying people who trusted us.

Psychology The Mind and Martial Arts A Good Shout, A Sturdy Glare “A good shout and a sturdy glare will kill you more men than your sword”. These were the words of Marcus Porcius Cato. He was the great grandfather of Cato the Younger, the uncompromising defender of Rome’s traditional values and supporter of liberty and opposition to tyranny. Mar cus Por cius Cato held the Roman consulship in 195 BC. He served as an ordinary soldier in the Roman army but earned extraordinary recognition for his courage and bravery. His advice for going into battle was simple and direct: Take your stance, stare your enemy directly in the eyes, give a loud shout and then rush upon him. This advice from Ancient Rome was also to be found in the feudal period of Asia. Warriors throughout history and in various nations recognized the importance of the shout, the glare and the charging of the enemy.

Martial Psychology The Warrior’s Shout The warrior’s shout served many purposes. It was a forceful expression of one’s fighting spirit and commitment to victory. It served to intimidate the enemy. It also served to control one’s own fears. The shout summoned your courage and encouraged the flow of adrenaline. The brain’s chemical chain reaction of released adrenaline made the body stronger, delivered blows more forcefully, and, blows were received less painfully. The shout also kept the mind focused so that the thoughts of one’s own defeat and death were held in abeyance. Most Martial Artists are familiar with the kiai, the shout that accompanies their techniques. What is unknown to most, indeed it is considered an esoteric and almost lost art even in Japan, is kiai-jitsu. Kiai-jitsu is the “art of the spiritmeeting shout”. The art reportedly began in China and was carried to Japan. Traditional tales abound about the mysterious and miraculous art of kiai-jitsu. Shaolin monks were reported to be able to knock a bird from flight with one forceful shout. Japanese masters claimed to be able to hurt and heal with the shout. One account relates how a nose-bleed was stopped by the kiai of a samurai. In China, as part of the healing art of Chi Kung (qi gong) various sounds are used to direct energy to the different organ systems of the body. The chanting of Buddhist scriptures by Tibetan monks, like the Gregorian chants of European monks, have been proven to relax the mind-body and induce a deep meditative state. The monks of both cultures use sound to affect the body and mind; the warrior also uses sound but in a more martial way. To be effective, the shout must come from deep within one’s gut. It is a sound that originates in the lower abdomen, not the throat. It is a sound that projects one’s power and energy outward like the roar of thunder.

The Glare The eyes project the lightening to match the peel of thunder. Imagine Marcus Porcius Cato standing in battle formation. Across from him waits the enemy. Cato does not look down in an expression of submission and fear. He does not look up to the heavens for help. No, he stares directly into the eyes of the man he knows he will soon kill! How often do we observe boxers glaring at each other as they are given final instructions by the referee. Often the weaker boxer will look away, his spirit defeated before the match begins. Lucia Rijker, a former Kickboxer who became a world Boxing champion, related an interesting story. She once entered the ring to face her opponent for a championship match. She noticed that for a brief instant her opponent looked at her and gasped. It was only a fleeting moment in time but Lucia’s gaze caught it. Her opponent, for that brief moment, was in awe, she was afraid, she was overwhelmed by the sight of Lucia’s powerful body and forceful expression. And, at that moment, Lucia knew she had beaten her opponent. She knew her adversary’s spirit had been broken. Martial Psychology to avoid eye contact even as they close and engage their opponent . Rather than risk psychological-spiritual defeat, they do not dare to meet the eyes of their opponent. Certain Pendakar (masters) have been reported to have such powerful stares that they can take down small animals. Some, it is said, can even stop a man with their glance.

The Rush Rushing or charging the enemy gives one the advantage of being on the offense. The enemy now must react to your actions. He is one beat behind the battle rhythm you have set. Marcus Porcius Cato knew that the sight of an opponent rushing forward, sword in hand, would cause an undisciplined soldier to panic. The sign of cowardice in battle was to drop your shield and run from the enemy. Remember the Spartan’s admonition when given their shield for battle: return with it or upon it. Although defeated in battle, a samurai general’s proud boast would be that none of his men’s bodies were found face down, having been slain from behind as they fled. No, they would die in place, facing their opponent, as true fearless warriors. By running forward you have made the psychological commitment to engage the enemy. Fears and hesitations have no place among the determined warriors. The Roman legion was famous for it’s fighting spirit. Their battle cry was “stand and fight, victory or death”. After the fall of Rome’s enemy, Carthage, in 146 BC a new proverb entered their language. Vae victis, “woe to the conquered”. The Carthaginians who were not slain in battle were sold into slavery. Their city was leveled. The soil was sown with salt so that nothing would ever grow there again. Vae victis! For the Romans themselves there could be only victory or death.

Determination The shout, the glare and the rush were, and are still, the foundation of martial victory. These three reflect the determination that is necessary for the warrior to emerge victorious in an encounter. They remind us that the martial arts are not about belt ranks and trophies. Instead, they call to our attention the proper psychological-spiritual determination of true martial arts.

ach grade has an arsenal of different menus, each consisting of striking techniques, various defenses and stance transition exercises, as well as movements and combinations using the retzev phenomenon. In addition, from the first grades, the goal of the I.M.A.D.S. methodology is that each student becomes autonomous in the shortest possible time. This requires an effort of reflection and understanding of each one of the menus studied.

Each grade uses the same methodological formula, that is, a first learning phase followed by a phase of implementation. Specifically, the first phase is dedicated to learning the contents of the different menus, which are complemented by an automation and testing phase ... The application! The first grades are rich in technical menus whose priority is that of accumulating a sufficient amount of skills so that the student can integrate it into the logical principles used in Krav Maga. In short, if we want to use one of the principles of our system, like for example that of simultaneity, and perform a "lock / counter" at the same time in a direct hit, first we need to master the art of blocking, as well as the art of effective hitting! If we stop to observe the different grades from Yellow Belt to Black Belt 3rd Dan, it seems obvious to us that the higher we ascend in scale, the less techniques there are left to learn. The first grades are loaded with all kind of information, compared to the last ones, that are purer.

I.M.A.D.S ... Krav Maga ... Contact Combat ... No, we didn't forget an important element about the proper functioning of Krav Maga in real life! As you all know, literally translated the expression "Krav Maga" means Contact Combat, and we have not yet spoken of this inseparable part, "that of the combat." This important part, of course, is never forgotten in our teaching structure. Very soon, as he ascends in grade, the student will be started in free fighting. He will pass a learning phase in which he will become confident and aware of the reality of a physical confrontation. In a second phase, and over time, what we call technical

BUJUTSU - The Rise of the Military Class - Part 2 These classifications, in turn, are related to the using of weapons, due to the fact that they are predominantly based on mechanical weapons or types of weapons that differ from other arts, whose basic weapons were parts of the human body. The Bujutsu is assigned two categories: external and internal. The external one is said to integrate aspects perceptible to the s i g h t . T h e s e c o n d c a t e g o r y, i n t u r n , encompasses factors that cannot be visibly identified, or at least immediately perceived, and that are intrinsically related to the efficiency of technical execution.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Japanese military training differed greatly from Age to Age.â&#x20AC;?

Japan Tradition rroneously, when we affirm that the samurai in his authority was a practitioner of the entire "Bugei Juhapan", we are attributing to history, in a generalized manner, a hoax that he didn't actually incur. Japanese military training differed greatly from Age to Age. During the Early Middle Ages, the period most prone to wars and internal conflicts in Japanese history, military training for most samurai, was not entirely elaborate. Most warriors, especially those of lower classes, considered analogically as recruits and Ashigaru, probably simply learned the principles of the weapons they held and used in wars, acquiring, for the most part, certain skills through their experiences and practice in battles.

Some were interested and sought more serious access to Bugei teachers and experts to better understand the use of such combat arts. In general, most had no interest in the practice, but there were of course men who devoted themselves to perfecting the arts of direct confrontation. Thus arose, directly and indirectly, a series of Ryuha lineages which over time became more specialized. In the first centuries of the Middle Ages, there were, in fact, a few dozen people who stood out among the rest, but those who were uniformly listed as masters throughout Japan between dates and periods of ancient history, do not exceed one hundred. We cannot confuse the Ryuha with the Clans. During the Middle Ages, these Ryuha that today represent the top of lineages, are representatives who, for the most part, had almost no training, as reported. The Samurai of the Middle Ages was a positioning bureaucrat and not a samurai of war and combat, because there wasn't a war at all times. Now ... It is a fact that there were true experts with powerful abilities that had faithful followers in their schools and they were no more numerous than today.

Most daimyo of this Age had special Bugei masters, for themselves and their families, who belonged to a specific Ryuha. Some of these masters were more radical and wouldn't allow differentiated learning to exist in regard to Ryuha lineages. However, according to historical documents, the same Ryuha could provide more than one master for a particular daimyo. Many daimyo employed masters of more than one Ryuha. Unfortunately, since that time, there was a policy on who they should listen to in the most important councils. Logically, there were other Ryuha that existed almost in secret, remaining inviolable in the interest of the daimyo, who in many cases sought to take control of their guidelines for themselves. Others altered the name of the lineage and assumed for themselves a new story in the face of their traditions. Several of the latter ones, such as "Kashima-shinryu", from the house of Kunii, which remained a purely familiar tradition. Other Ryuha functioned more broadly and openly, giving the Edo and Kyoto samurai warriors knowledge of Bugei, which by this time they were already more numerous - this is

Japan Tradition because Bugei schools became focal points of anti-shogunate movements around the year 800. These were places where samurai from different domains could meet and interact without causing suspicion to Shogun officials. Another interesting thing: the word clan refers to military policy and organizations related to the Medieval Age and the Daimyo. To this day, this word, technically, according to historians, should be thrown away. In many cases the sound of the word daimyo in movies refers to subordinates. But the daimyo army and its policies were not really built by family junctions. "Dominators" would be the word historians would like to use. The word clan would be largely irrelevant to the history of warriors, and its meaning represents all Japanese history after the eighth century. The unique meaning between warriors and non-warriors, is summed up in the real form, to those who go to war and to the fictitious form, whose meaning has been explored in various ways in their feudal establishment. The control of everything was based on financial and military dependence, not on close contact by family unions.

There are six predominant types of Ryu (schools), which can be defined as: • Originals: schools run by the founder or immediate successors under his supervision. • Derivatives: schools supervised by instructors and teachers who studied with private teachers before opening their own schools. • Hereditary: schools run by a family that have passed on the teachings from father to son for generations. • Non-hereditary, or Ryu-ha: more uncommon, perhaps because they haven’t been as preserved as hereditary schools. • Public: schools officially allowed by the authorities of the time, which operated in certain places and were paid through productive land or rice loads. • Private: schools that operated without official permission, but were tolerated in certain feuds. Bugei was taught in military schools (bujutsu ryu) scattered throughout Japan, so it’s impossible to specify the exact number of them - since it varies from one period to another. According to R. P. Dore, in 1843 about 159 large schools were included in the "Bujutsu Ryusoroku", but the list does not include smaller and / or clandestine schools.

Jukoshin Ryu. An effective self-defense system. The Jukoshin Ryu style of Jiu Jitsu was designed to be a powerful and definitive tool in hand-to-hand combat. For the next four days, there will be three seminar sessions each day on various subjects, which include weaponry, joint manipulation, grappling techniques from takedowns to submissions, and standup fighting taught directly by Supreme Grandmaster Dr. Joo Bang Lee (Dojoonim) and his eldest son, Grandmaster Taejoon Lee (Kuksanim). Then, in the late afternoon, the participants are divided into Hwa Rang Do Black Sashes taught by Dojoonim and the Tae Soo Do Instructors and Hwa Rang Do Color Sashes taught by Kuksanim. They review the material of our core curriculum and when they show proficiency and understanding, they are taught new techniques. Followed by a group dinner, sharing and discussing what we have learned as well as strengthening our familial bonds. We even had the privilege to attend an evening at the local Opera House where they invited an opera company from South Korea. These times are most

precious to us as we have the opportunity to be in the presence of the Founder and the Heir of our art all in one place. It is truly a rare historical moment, which we cherish with all our hearts every minute we can spare. The last day started with a group discussion with Kuksanim and then the Hwa Rang Do Black Sash Dan Promotional Examination. They start with a two-hour written exam, then an intensive oral examination where all the high-ranking Black Sashes are able to ask questions on the candidatesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; goals, purpose, commitment, and loyalty. After which they spend another three-hours in demonstrating their physical and mental proficiency and strength. After the completion of a successful Black Sash Promotional Examination, we met for our final group dinner, closing banquet, and the coveted Black Sash Ceremony. It was a beautiful ending in the most accommodating setting, overlooking the majestic rolling hills of Tuscany where countless ancient battles ensued now covered by waves of vegetation and vineyards that provide life, nourishment to the region.

Hwa Rang Do We h a v e l e a r ned many valuable lessons and corrections, which we should all treasure. What we all realized the most was that there is always room for i m p ro v e m e n t , especially when we have so many techniques to learn. Kuksanim stressed the point that our goal is perfection, that no one is perfect and an imperfect being can never achieve perfection. However we must strive for it and that is the path of a warrior. He does not enter battle, thinking that it will be the last battle; he fights so that he can fight again. The goal is to p e r s e v e re , n o t through small obstacles or weak opposition, but to overcome great odds, then look for even stronger foes.

Even with one technique there are so many ways it can be done, but as we train year after year, we get closer to doing it right. Dojoonim teaches us that we can never give up; that we must always move forward; that when we climb a mountain and reach its summit, we then clearly see that there are so many other mountain peaks to climb. Therefore, we must humble ourselves and retreat from the summit until we are at bottom, then again begin the climb once more until another summit is achieved, then repeat. People today give up too easily and do not even reach one summit and if they have summited one mountain, they feel as though they have conquered the world, blinded by their ego, by their accomplishments to see the other peaks beyond and remain entitled in their delusions of grandeur.

Hwa Rang Do On the last day, Kuksanim closed the event with these thoughts: “You will not like what I am about to tell you, but I am not here to please you, I am here to share the Truth. What you like or don’t like really has no value. You cannot base your life decisions on your likes and dislikes and that’s what’s wrong with your life. Think about it! You didn’t like to eat broccoli when you were a child and your parents had to coerce you to eat them by saying, ‘Oh look, they are like little trees. Aren’t they cute? Here try one.’ And, now all grown up you realize it’s health benefits and being a trendy vegan you not only enjoy them, but you are a champion of social change, reducing your carbon footprint, being more humane, gaining the support and adoration of your peers. Some of you never liked sushi and confessed you’d never eat it. ‘Raw fish, are you kidding me? I will never touch that stuff.’ I remember one of our Black Sashes here who went with us to a Sushi restaurant and asked if they had French fries. It was so embarrassing. Now, he loves it, however, being a novice sushi eater he will eat it at every

opportunity unable to discern whether of good or bad quality. More the better! And, who would have ever thought that these changes would ever take place. We never think we will change and hold fast to our opinions as truths, yet our opinions change like the seasons. Today, our whole world, society, gover nments encourages us to make decisions on what we like and dislike. The popular slogan these days is ‘Do what you like and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Pursue it no matter what.’ This type of hedonistic, self indulgent, narcissistic culture only benefits big companies, big businesses, big money. It has become a culture of consumption where the big companies with lots of money spent on advertising molds our way of thinking, living, and doing anything and everything through social media and technology. We are glued to our phones. There’s a recent statistic that stated that on average a person looks at their phone 86 times a day. A device that allows us to text, make calls, watch, listen to music, browse the internet, and stay connected on social media all on one device is too tempting and

Hwa Rang Do exploits our human propensity for addiction. Now, we are fed constantly 24/7 with information that shapes and molds our opinions on everything. Yet, we think it was our idea, our independent opinion. That is what is subversive, in the dark, which is evil contrary to the good, which is always in the light, in plain sight. We are being programmed, conditioned, and it’s almost impossible to realize it unless you unplug, disconnect, separate yourselves, detach from all media and seek for the Truth on your own. What we like has nothing to with what is true or with what is right. Everything is made to be quick and easy, creating a society of people who seek for immediate gratification, superficiality, reduced attention span, who only seek pleasure without any deep purpose or meaning, taking advantage of our human need to seek comfort and security, surrendering all our birthrights, privacy, and freedom, which in the process robs us of any meaning and value. Everyone has an opinion and it means absolutely nothing! It’s just that, an opinion and there are as many opinions as there are people in the world. The only opinions that should matter are from the people who know you best, your parents, closest of friends, hopefully your teachers, and even from amongst them you must be selective to choose who is truthful. Yes, that’s right, not who agrees with you, but who most tells you the truth. The reason why you stop listening to your parents and attempt to leave the house to live on your own as soon as you legally can is so that you don’t have to hear your parents complaining about you all the time; because what they say is true, not because they’re wrong. You seek then the rest of your life for people who agree with you, who like you, who does not upset you, who pleases you, and from these people you seek advice, adoration, support, equating love with likes. You surround yourself with sycophants and anyone who disagrees; you call them names and classify them as outdated, old-fashioned, unprogressive, archaic, bigot, racist, phobic, etc. etc. I have also said many times to my

That they may take action, voice their opinion, disagree with me or any other senior rank when they think they are in the right. Then most often than not, you pass a presumptuous judgment without full understanding and inquiry, send an email or text and quit. We have been reduced to a culture where breaking up of our relationships, our commitments, our (seemingly) forever friendships, and eternal love is even made quick and easy without a face-to-face discussion, seeking of resolution, but with only an impersonal digital message. Yes, most often truth hurts more than feel good and when your parents and teachers who are good tell you things you do not like to hear, but are true, you run from them. You have imaginary friends online who are of similar age and issues whom you seek for advice. Think about it, how crazy is that?! They lack wisdom and the life experiences necessary to give any advice to others. We all desire to be loved and to love, but love has nothing to do with being liked as liking and being liked

Hwa Rang Do is selfish and being loved and loving is selfless. It is said in Proverbs, ‘Do not correct a fool, or he will hate you; correct a wise man and he will appreciate you.’ Finally, you may ask, how can one know the Truth, what is right? You have to detach and seek continually, relentlessly until you find it. And, surely if you only seek to be happy, to be pleased and please others, you will never find it.” Dojoonim’s and Kuksanim’s teachings and their words have impacted us deeply. Systema Impulse ring I understand the impulse ring as an analog of the memory of the genus, it contains information accumulated by the individual in all his births. The impulse ring has a core (the core of the mind) around which, in different orbits, like electrons around the atomic nucleus, the energy bundles of positive and negative experiences circulate, acquired by this individual in one or another incarnation in the physical world. The impulse ring of a person is outside the physical body of a person, that is, over the head in the body of the dream, and is preserved after his death. The whole biological part (body) of a person serves the impulse ring with energy. The field generated by the physical body serves as an energy bridge from the gross nature to the subtle energies of the impulse ring. It can be said that the energy ring is a kind of energy plan created by the physical body of the individual. Therefore, a lot depends on the physical condition of a person.
