ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

THE WORLD CONTINUES TO TURN...

It’s ironic that this time last year this editorial page appeared under the title ‘Breeding returns to a ‘near normal’ season’... Today, one year later, although we are well beyond the Covid era, who would have imagined that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine would now be entering its third year, and that serious conflicts in the Middle East would once again be hitting the headlines in a major way.

The world is perhaps now witnessing the sort of lifestyle upheavals that haven’t been experienced for several decades, even without considering the possible fall-out of the November 2024 presidential election in the USA.

Global events may appear far removed from the world of sport horse breeding. Foals are still being born (by a variety of methods, some controversial), young horses are being prepared, competition horses continue to accumulate the miles by air and by road to attend major events. Little has changed in that respect.

Just 10 years ago, auctions that were seasonally organized by the majority of studbooks have now become monthly fixtures on their event calendars. Economically, maintaining the Covid-prompted adjustment to online and/or hybrid auctions, as well as those that have popped up to meet the demands of private owners, have changed the landscape. What was seen previously as an unprecedented upswing in the marketing of frozen embryos now seems to be a ‘new norm’. What this means for the history of sport horse breeding as a whole has yet to unfold. If embryos can safely remain frozen indefinitely, how will this impact genetic diversity in the decades to come.

As always, welfare is uppermost in peoples’ minds, and ‘license to operate’ has become a well-used phrase. However, it should be said that horse people who are quoted as saying ‘non horse people just don’t understand’ cer-

tainly doesn’t help the narrative. There is no doubt that the horse industry must be more responsible, and develop better transparency and accountability if it’s to survive unscathed.

Despite the issues facing sport horse breeders aroung the world, we hope you will see this BREEDING NEWS WORLDWIDE SPORT HORSE STALLION DIRECTORY, as a familiar and honest friend that continues to be an invaluable addition to every breeders’ toolbox.

This is the sixth year – our 20th anniversary edition – that we have published this directory exclusively online and now completely free of charge! It represents the only ‘global’ database uniquely for stallions that is ‘live’ 365 days a year. As always, it offers self management of entries by stallion owners and representatives who can independently add/update information, making it even more accurate and efficient.

Year after year we present information from the stallion databases developed by member studbooks of the WBFSH: From 4,000 stallions recorded in the Directory’s first year, to over 10,000 curated entries in 2024. We strive to continuously improve to better inform you, the breeders. This is why, for the 15th year in a row, the WBFSH is supporting our initiative. This renowned Federation’s logo on our front cover is our motivation, our encouragement.

Our thanks go to all those stallion owners and studbooks who every year provide reliable information. We are also extremely grateful to our faithful and regular advertisers, whose valuable partnerships have taught us the meaning of mutual respect and loyal support.

Thanks to Xavier Libbrecht, Jean and Peter Llewellyn and the many correspondents who have made this BN journey possible for the past 28 years. WORLD BREEDING NEWS wouldn’t be the same without them. It’s all about team work. Alban Poudret

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE...

This20th edition of the BREEDING NEWS WORLDWIDE SPORT HORSE STALLION DIRECTORY once again reflects consistent improvement and is maintained year-round to reflect the upto-date information provided to us by studbooks, stud farms, and individual breeders. We extend our thanks to them for their involvement and continued support. This year, the stallions and contacts appear online as a unique interactive database, where owners can self manage their stallions, adding and updating information. A major step forward for breeding in a world where technology is an essential tool.

PART I: THE STALLION LIST

• Life number: While some studbooks have embraced the UELN concept, there are others who have yet to adopt this universal numbering system for birth registrations. A pity, since registration numbers are essential for accurately tracking horses whose names may change several times during their sporting careers.

• Year of birth and pedigree: Virtually 100%

• Size and colour: Included in the database where provided by studbooks.

• Breeder, studbook of origin: It continues to be frustrating that some studbooks and independent breeders often fail to acknowledge or publish this information – which is somewhat schocking when they would undoubtedly wish this for themselves. So, dear breeders, please take pride in your role and honour the accomplishments of others by sharing this information with us and the rest of the world. Breeders are the most important component in this project, alongside the stallions themselves.

• Approval studbooks: A unique aspect of our Directory, as an increasing number of ‘star’ stallions are regularly approved by more than one studbook, even if they are not recognized by their own birth studbook. Ironic!

PART II: CONTACTS

We continue to strive for alphabetical integrity by using primary names to better facilitate the search process and, hopefully, avoid any foreign language confusion.

The breeder who owns one stallion is as important as one who owns 20 or more. By cross-referencing every stallion entry (where the owner is known), our Directory database has become a valuable ‘interactive’ source. This is why it is unique, and why the searchable online database provides the ability to sort stallions by specified criteria. Power at your fingertips, although when contact information is minimal or unrecorded so a vital link is lost.

AND EDITORIAL CONTENT

Yes, once again, we have gathered together tables and ranking lists in one valuable volume:

• Who is the Sire of Sires?

• Who is the leading Dam’s Sire?

• The most influential bloodlines according to the entries and recognition of new stallions?

• The leading breeder according to the number of approved stallions produced?

• The leaders in the sport horse family?

• The LONGINES-WBFSH Breeders Awards?

• The best performance stallions?

• Which studbook is dominating the scene? How?

• Auctions – unique information, herein and online every month throughout the year

Our commitment to you the breeder is in continuing to provide invaluable information and interesting statistics that will hopefully impact and enhance your success. ■

(*Our Directory is reserved exclusively for living stallions that are approved/licensed by member studbooks of the WBFSH.)

IS CORNET OBOLENSKY CHALLENGING DIAMANT?

Ifit wasn’t for two highly visible changes at the top of this sire of sires ranking, you might be forgiven for thinking we’d published last year’s table by mistake. However, while the Selle Français Diamant de Semilly (Le Tot de Semilly - Venise des Cresles x Elf III) added two new approved sons to his resumé and holds his lead, Cornet Obolensky –equal second last year alongside the legendary Quidam de Revel – has seen a meteroric rise with no fewer than 16 additional approved sons.

There is little doubt that this can be attributed to a two-fold annihilation of the opposition: the popularity among studbooks for Cornet’s young offspring at licensings, as well as the retroactive approval of his sporting sons. And, given the volume of foals and coverings in Cornet’s name over the past couple of years, it’s highly likely that within the next two or three years he could overtake the long-time leading sire Diamant de Semilly.

The first name that can be found as a newcomer, rather than an old-timer whose numbers are waning, is the Rheinlander bred by Hermann Schult, Fidertanz (27).

But, perhaps more importantly, there are an increasing number of new, albeit well-known names that are now appearing in the low 20s, and who should not be overlooked in terms of challenging some of the best-known sires of past years, including Vitalis (2007/KWPN VivaldiTolivia x D-Day), Ugano Sitte (2004/SBS Clinton - Ialta Sitte x Avontuur), Mylord Carthago (2000/ SF Carthago - Fragance de Chalus x Jalisco B), Stakkato Gold (2001/ Hann StakkatoWertherröschen x Werther), Totilas (2000/ KWPN GribaldiLominka x Glendale), and Vigo d’Arsouilles (1998/BWP Nabab de Reve - Illico d’Arsouilles x Fleuri du Manoir).

Cornet’s eight-year-younger age gap to his peer also cannot be ignored, as well as the latest reproductive technology (whether you agree with it or not), which is is extending and expanding the breeding career’s of today’s popular sires.

Without labouring the very few losses and gains of virtually every other sire on this table, it would seem more interesting to view those names that don’t yet appear, but have been gradually moving up the rankings in recent years.

Some of these names represent sires that have appeard in our table for many years, but as we hear of reductions in foal registrations and more economic considerations, will breeders in the future look to younger, cheaper sires in making their breeding decisions, or continue to support the old guard? ■

It should be remembered that although you may see discrepancies between our table and other online databases, the Stallion Directory only includes ‘living’ sires, and those that are licensed/approved by member studbooks of the WBFSH.

IS CONTENDER’S CROWN SLIPPING?

Witha substantial buffer of 26 mares, it’s highly unlikely that Contender will lose his crown within the next year or two without a major challenge from one of his nearest rivals.

Of course, with modern reproductive technology now creating numerous embryos from a few highly decorated mares due to the golden success of their competitive offspring, perhaps we are entering a new era that will show more noticeable changes than the +1s and +2s on this table.

Still making an above-average name for himself following his skyward trend in 2022, Diamant de Semilly has added another three mares to his resumé. Kannan, sitting in 37th place last year, now occupies 30th with five additional mares alongside another upwardly mobile sire, Cornet Obolensky. The latter’s rise has been stratospheric in adding 10 mares to his running total, and given the enormous popularity and prices his voluminous embryos were fetching at auction in 2023, it will be hardly surprising if we see another huge leap up the sires of dams table in 2025.

(Jalanda x Latus I), descends from one of Paul Schockemöhle’s marelines and is mother to the stallion Conthargos (Converter I), the 1m60 jumping mare Chacandra (ChaccoBlue), plus 10 other offspring with sport results.

Despite being long-deceased, Quidam de Revel retains his third place, and having had 88 daughters for three years in a row, 2020, 2021 and 2022, has now added two more and now sits with 90.

The first dressage-bred stallion in the top 10 is Donnerhall, who moved up from sixth to fifth place in 2022 with 75 daughters has dropped once again (-1). His Oldenburger-bred daughter Arkona (Arwaldis x Walldorf I) produced two Grand Prix horses: Florimax and Flirt, both by Florencio I, plus four other good competitors.

Looking at some interesting history, Carthago continues to old steady in second place (+1 mare in 2023) thanks to the popularity of his daughters in Belgium. Zangersheide-bred mare Cadence du Ruisseau Z has produced two 1m60 jumpers: Cadet du Ruisseau and Cirus du Ruisseau, both by Chellano Z. Another Zangersheide-bred mare Cajandra Z

Weltmeyer, the only other dressage stallion in the top 10, has plateaued with 66 daughters. His Hanoverian-bred daughter Welfenkrone (Gondola x Graphit) is mother to three approved stallions: Sherwood and Sherwood Forest (Sherlock Holmes), and Don Corazon (Don Frederico), plus GP dressage horse Dai Jin (Don Frederico) and four additional sport horses.

It seems that generational advantages for many of these legendary names will remain strong, especially when one coonsiders that Ramiro (ranked 5th) was born 57 years ago! ■

PAUL SCHOCKEMÖHLE: NO STOPPING A RUNAWAY TRAIN!

Last year’s leading breeder editorial opened with the line: “There’s a remarkable irony in the fact that the breeder who has won our Stallion Directory crown since 2015 has himself never been awarded as the leading breeder in any discipline on the WBFSH rankings.” This fact still holds true.

Last year we also announced his partnership with Danish dressage supremo Andreas Helgstrand, and their jointly bred Torveslettens Titanium RS2 (Totilas x Stedinger) appeared in the WBFSH dressage rankings for the first time in 39th place. After a great year with several top placings under the saddle of Dutch team member Marieke van der Putten, this gelding is now on an upward trajectory sitting in 19th.

As showjumping was Schockemöhle’s first foray into both sport and breeding, it was somewhat surprising that in the 2022 rankings his name didn’t appear in the top 40 of WBFSH breeders. However, in 2023, his own-bred Dialou Blue PS (Diarado’s Boy x Chacco-Blue) ranked 31st under the saddle of 2016 Olympic team champion Kevin Staut (FRA). As this year will see the Olympic Games in Paris, with the highest number of ranking points on the table, it’s highly possible that this 10-year-old mare could be the cream that rises to the top.

land (15th) from 11 to 16 stallions, and Michel Guiot/Haras de Tamerville (23rd) from nine to 13. It’s entirely possible that this has occurred with older stallions that have been approved/licensed retroactively, either based on their own sporting results, or those of their offspring rather than youngsters.

Overall, given Paul Schockemöhle’s massive margin, it’s the breeders with 20+ stallions who are consistently vying for promotion, but as our database perpetually updates by removing deceased and/or castrated stallions (when known), a breeder’s individual ranking can be impacted by both successes and deaths.

Certainly, French breeder Richard Levallois’ unique grasp on second place is now being shared by Belgian Joris de Brabander, with Wiepke van de Lageweg holding steady in fourth place.

It should also be noted that in the WBFSH breeder rankings, which includes over 6,000 horses, Schockemöhle’s Lewitz studfarm is represented by 5% of showjumping horses competing around the world. A remarkable achievement that is unlikely to ever be surpassed by any other breeder.

While the great majority of breeders in our database of approved stallions have minimally increased or decreased, two are notable for substantial rises: Mickaël Varliaud’s SCEA River-

The only notable relegation occurred with Tjark and Ute Witt/Witt Pferdezucht dropping from 15th to 28thex. In some cases, this can be attributable to the breeding torch being passed from one generation to the next, which is highly likely as the Witt family has been breeding Holstein horses for many generations and is now being managed by Tjark, Marten, and Alexandra Witt. ■

Notes:

• Column two shows the previous year’s ranking position, while column four shows the number of approved/licensed stallions attributed to each breeder as at the end of 2023.

• There is a negative impact on breeder rankings when stallions have died, been castrated, or had their approval/licensing revoked and prompted their removal from the Directory database.

• ‘ex’ = ex aecquo = equality in the volume of stallions.

DONATELLO D’AUGE (SF) (JARNAC X HELLO PIERVILLE)

BRED BY SUSANA EPAILLARD GARCIA CERECEDA

Donatello d’Auge jumped decisively into the history books during 2023 when he carried French international Julien Epaillard to a victorious season with a special twist, because the 2013-born gelding was bred by his wife, Susana Epaillard Garcia Cereceda.

The modest rider’s success continued into early 2024 in Bordeaux, when the pair carried home the coveted CSI5*-W 1m60 Audi Grand Prix on home soil. According to Epaillard; “It was nice to win here. Bordeaux is a special show with a long tradition in France.” Being first to go in the jump-off certainly posed some mind-bending questions, with the rider second-guessing his decision to ride Donatello at this show given that he’d already qualified for the World Cup final. “I was riding one of my best horses, and not all the riders have the luxury of having two such horses.”

With the 2022-23 leading breeder award season running from October 1 to September 30 each year, Donatello d’Auge’s journey began with a bang, scoring his first victory in the Nations Cup final in Barcelona on... October 1. It was followed just two weeks later with two class victories during the CSI4* in St. Tropez-Grimaud, and two further wins before the month had even ended during the CSI5*-W in Lyon.

A World Cup win in Amsterdam in January 2023 added to his everincreasing points tally that continued to rise throughout the summer season, with Grand Prix and Global Champions Tour wins in St. Tropez, Bourg-en-Bresse, Paris, Monte Carlo, and Rome.

Coincidentally, Donatello’s breeder had to say ‘goodbye’ to the gelding’s grandsire, Hello Pierville in early March 2024 at the age of 29. The stallion, who had enjoyed years of peaceful retirement at his owners’ farm, La Bosquetterie, had been both a loyal companion as well as a source of inspiration to Susana Epaillard through his genetic contribution to her successful breeding. His memory will now live on through his descendants and, in this Paris 2024 Olympic year, what better testament to Hello Pierville’s tranquil character than to have a grandson top the podium in the country of his and his rider’s birth. ■

DALERA BB (TRAK)

(EASY GAME X HENDRYK)

BRED BY SILKE DRUCKENMÜLLER

TheLongines-WBFSH Breeder Awards was a bittersweet occasion for Silke Druckenmüller’s husband Thorsten, as his wife had sadly passed away in 2023, so he attended the ceremony in Amsterdam on her behalf. It would have been Silke’s third leading breeder win with TSF Dalera, so we take this opportunity to bring you her history and quotes posthumously.

Silke Druckenmüller had no background with horses, only finding her way to them through a riding school. She came to breeding by chance, becoming captivated by foals, and couldn’t escape once she started breeding, delightedly admitting that her success has essentially “been all luck.” It was through her connections and many years of friendship to the late breeder of Mon Clair de La Lune that she came to choose Easy Game for her Trakehner mare Dark Magic (Handryk x Hohenstein), Dalera’s dam, born in 2002. According to Silke: “I found Dark Magic on the internet and purchased her from the breeder as a riding horse. Dark Magic’s pedigree appealed to us, and because Handryk’s sire, Van Deyk, had some very good offspring here in the area at the time. Her motherline is very solid and comes from East Germany. This line is known for producing jumping horses, but it also gives hardness and willingness to perform.”.

Silke’s breeding goal had always been to produce a good riding horse, with the hope that it would also be a good sport horse – a horse with a good character and attitude, and a willingness to perform. And of course, a horse that is fun on a daily basis. To her, these traits were much more important than any other criteria, also at a high level of the sport.

As a foal Dalera was essentially just as one knows her today, “always rideable,” and how Jessica von Bredow-Werndl usually describes her. She was always even-tempered and drawn to people. According to Silke, “You could already see the quality of movement, always moving in the field in a loose and elastic manner. And she was simply uncomplicated.” When Dalera was sold at the age of four or five, Silke has already assessed her as ‘very good’.

Although further pregnancies evaded Dark Magic, Silke was still able to breed from her via embryo transfer, and last year produced two full sisters to Dalera, “plus I bred a full brother, who is now also with Dalera’s owner.”

Silke was always incredibly proud of Dalera’s achievements, and acknowledged the special gift of the Longines-WBFSH Breeders’ Awards that brought recognition to a group that often goes unnoticed. ■

GALILEO NIEUWMOED

(KWPN) (CARAMBOLE X HARCOS)

BRED BY J.W. AND A.P. JURRIUS

GalileoNieumoed’s British rider, David Doel (31), celebrated the biggest achievement of his career so far, when the gelding carried him to a narrow second ploace at the 2023 Burghley Horse Trials, bringing a successful season to a timely close. In a quote published in Horse & Hound, David said: “As I rode up to the first fence (in the showjumping phase), the crowd went silent. Galileo tapped a couple of poles early on and I was really lucky up to the third fence when I had to have a little chat with him. The rest of the way he jumped super for me. He’s a magic horse and he really deserved this.”

For two seasons now, the pair have been making their presence known as dreams that began with a sixth-place finish during their Badminton Horse Trials debut and eighth at Kentucky became a reality. And for any top athlete, David – who has been described as both passionate and competitive – understands the difference achieving a sub-30 dressage score can make to consistent results, so this is something he’s been working on with Galileo. “We have been working on his suppleness, trimming him, and bringing more strength across his topline to get more bounce in his dressage.”

For David and Galileo, the 2024 season certain got off to a winning start, and saw his winter dressage training paying dividends. A score of 26.1 set them on the road to victory in the Open Intermediate section in Oasby, in which they cantered around the cross-country course with just 6.4 time faults – one of the quickest times of the day.

Naturally, for the gelding’s rider and co-owner, alongside Gillian Jonas and Mary Fox, David’s eyes are firmly set on team selection with Galileo for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. Naturally, it will also be a feather in the cap of Galileo’s Dutch breeders, J.W. and A.P. Jurrius from Vorden – better known as pony breeders – who went to a well-known Holsteiner jumping stallion Carambole for their KWPN mare Sjaloma.

Carambole has produced a large number of successful horses, with big names in both sport and breeding using him for their mares, and Galileo Nieuwmoed’s success will now add to his resumé as an eventing horse sire. ■

THE IMPORTANCE OF PERFORMANCE

It would appear 12 is the ideal age for a jumper, with four out of the top 10 born in 2012, including the top ranked Uricas vd Kattevennen, a five-star competitor, and a star with Harrie Smolders. Their most recent big win was in November 2023 when they took home €333,333 for third (cute!) at the Longines Global Champs in Prague.

Uricas is by Uriko, another international campaigner, although one who was more comfortable in 1m40 classes than at the cutting edge. Uriko is by Untouchable, who was a top campaigner for a group of riders. He was certainly bred to jump, in three generations, out of 14 horses, seven competed at 1m60 level. Untouchable is by Hors La Loi II by Papillon Rouge, out of a mare by the Almé son, Joyau d’or A. Uricas is out of T-Cassina by the great Cassini I, out of Chicka’s Way, a 1m60 jumper by Caretino.

The second ranked horse Highway M TN is also brilliantly bred, he is by Eldorado vd Zoeshoek out of Zelana V by Chellano Z out of a mare by the great Darco. (It is incredible, in the World Cup Grand Prix last night at Amsterdam, there were two horses competing by Darco, including Highway, 18 years after his death!)

Highway is a 1m60 jumper with Willem Greve, his best result has been a 2nd at Falsterbo in a 1m60 in July 2023. His sire, Eldorado vd Zoeshoek has been declared a BWP ‘Ambassadeur’ for his performances, also with Willem Greve. He is the sire of 41 approved sons and 27 jumpers at 1m60 level. Third ranked Valmé de la Lande is what you might call a family horse, he jumped 1m65 with Michael Whitaker, then 1m60 with Michael’s son Jack. And he is still going, in January 2024 he was 23rd in a 1m40 at Sharjah, but the year before, was third in a World Cup

qualifier in Oslo.

Valmé de la Lande is by Mylord Carthago who is by Carthago, and is one of the 46 listed foals out of Joris de Brabander’s foundation mare, Fragance de Chalus (Jalisco B x Fury de la Cense). Mylord was a star with Penelope Leprevost, winning many five-star Grands Prix and team silver for France at the World Championships in Kentucky and the European Championships in Madrid. But it is when we get to Valmé’s dam, Athena de la lande, that we take a trip back in jumping history. She was born in 1988, by Starter, the last top son of Rantzau xx.

It must be said that this list of jumping stallions does not feature many real frontliners. The top stallion Uricas is ranked 18th on the WBFSH competitors standings, but while Stargold, fourth on the BN list is only 39th on the WBFSH rankings, he is a genuine international superstar.

Stargold is very much the product of the Sprehe stud farm, and while there was a degree of derision directed at the brothers who had made their fortune selling chicken nuggets, and now wanted to breed horses, they found wise counsel and 24 years later they are looking pretty good, while most of those old famous Oldenburger studs are just a fond memory.

Stargold was bred at Sprehe, and he is by their number one stallion, Stakkato Gold who is by Stakkato out of a mare by the great Werther. Stakkato Gold had a limited career with Jan Sprehe before being injured and sent to live in the breeding barn.

You can laugh all you like at bloodline gourmands who filter through ancient history in search of gold nuggets, but Stargold is living, breathing, proof that historic breeders can still be a force today. Stargold’s breeding on the top line and the bottom line is ancient.

33 Stallion Directory 2024 BREEDING NEWS STALLION RANKINGS 2022-2023

His sire, Stakkato Gold goes back to one of the very old Hanoverian lines, Jens Meyer tells the story well, it starts with Alsterröschen born in 1961: “The breeder of Alsterröschen was Franz Luth. He was not happy with the stallions at the local Dannenberg stallion station at the time, and that is why he bred to Agram – at that time they had big strong stallions at Dannenberg, heavy old-style horses, and he preferred Agram who was a lighter horse.” (Agram’s dam sire, Amateur I was a grand-son of the influential Shagja Arab, Amurath).

“So Franz Luth said, I will breed Agram back to an Agram mare, and everybody said, you are stupid, and in the end, the world today must be happy that he has these bloodlines.” If you want this story in full go to: https://www.horsemagazine.com/thm/2021/09 /who-were-the-greatest-showjumping-broodmares-of-all-time/ )

But Stargold’s mare line also stems from one of the great old breeders, Hans Hatje ,this time in Holstein, for the full story go to https://equnews.com/region/focus-on-stargoldthe-stallion-who-lived-up-his-name. The article tells us: “Stargold's pedigree takes us to Schleswig-Holstein, more specifically to the town of Haselau and Hetlingen. It was in Haselau that most of the stallions stood which formed the early generations of the motherline of Stargold. The line was formed by the breeder Hans Hatje from Hetlingen, and has produced top-quality horses for over 40 years.”

Stargold and Marcus Ehning took home another €14,200 with a win in the 1m50 at Jumping Amsterdam. Last year, they collected €620,000 at the Prague GCL, while earlier in the year they won the Grand Prix of Aachen with its prizemoney of €500,000.

While Sprehe apparently has a tank full of Stargold semen, the stallion has not been used in breeding while he concentrates on sport, and his dad Stakkato Gold does the covering…

The fifth ranked Amelusina R51 is

very much a product of one of Holland’s early cutting-edge breeding operations, Stal Roelofs. Sadly, the year Amelusina was born 2013 also marked the end of the venture. After 40 years of successful breeding (much of it based on the two foundation stallions, Abgar xx and Joost), the founder Herman Roelofs closed his farm since neither of his children wanted to continue with horses.

Amelusina R51 is by Dexter R by the Concorde son, Namelus R (Contender) out of B.Amelusina R 22 (Chin Chin / Mermus R). Ridden by Simon Delestre, Amelusina R 51 started 2024 with a 1m50 win in Doha, they seem to like the Middle East, in December 2023, they won the World Cup in Riyadh.

In sixth we have Crack Balou, a stallion that is very much the product of one of the world’s great breeders, Paul Schockemöhle. He is by one of the PSI stars, Balou du Reventon, who is by the great Cornet Obolensky, out of Georgia, who is also the dam of Balou du Rouet. Georgia is by Continue, a PSI stalwart, out of a mare by one of the original stallions that set the Schockemöhle brothers on the road to breeding success, Domino, who was by Domspatz out of a mare by the Abglanz son, Archimedes.

Crack Balou is described as a 1m60 jumper with Emmanuele Gaudiano, though of late he has been paying for his oats with 1m40/1m50 placings in Doha. At his last 1m60 start, he was 17th in Lyon in November 2023.

Seventh, and just to emphasise the Schockemöhle success story, is Naxcel V who is by Balou du Rouet, out of a Landetto x Lys de Darmen mare. He is ridden by Austrian, Gerfried Puck. Another pair who had fun at Doha, taking home €50,000 for a 1m55 win.

Mumbai, in eighth, is by the great Diamant de Sémilly, out of a Nabab de Rêve x Chin Chin mare. One of Ludgar Beerbaum’s stallion roster, he has been a star with Christian Kukuk, placing fourth in the Europeans of

“WE BREED AND SELL CHAMPIONS”

2021 when they were held on home turf, Riesenbeck. The pair had a great show at St Tropez in June 2023, winning one 1m60 class and second in another.

Nineth, Lector vd Bisshop, essence of Belgian breeding, his sire Bamako de Muze combines the blood of Darco, the stallion that ‘made’ the BWP, with Fragance du Chalus, the mare who created the breeding program of Joris de Brabander, arguably the most successful jumping breeder in the world.

Lector is out of Cordula de Lauby by For Pleasure out of a mare by Darco. The website Hippomundo recently analysed the top jumping broodmares and amazingly the two top mares are both owned by Joris, and the number one mare was Cordula de Lauby. She has produced 13 offspring that have jumped 1m45 or higher, with her best performer, Global (by Nabab de Rêve), a 1m65 jumper with Christian Weier, but she has foaled three other 1m60 jumpers – Fantomas de Muze (Sandro Boy), Igor de Muze (Tinka’s Boy) and Lord de Muze (Nabab de Rêve), and now we can add Lector vd Bisshop, since he collected €41,750 jumping 1m60 at Barcelona Nations Cup in 2023, though he hasn’t competed 1m60 since then.

Rounding out our top 10, Chic Chic, is ridden by Ireland’s Darragh Kenny. He has been competing in the United States since September 2022, for four wins, all at 1m50 level. He is by Comme il faut, and I love the story of how a pair of wily Ukranian businessmen negotiated with Ludger Beerbaum to buy his sire, Cornet Obolensky, but they had one more condition to seal the deal, in his first season he would be bred to the great Ratina Z, and Comme il faut was the result. Chic Chic is by Contendro I (by Contender, why do we keep running into him?) out of a mare by Accord II.

Dressage stallions

We must approach this list with care since it is based on the actual performances of the stal-

lions, and not the performance of their progeny which, if you are a mare owner, you might be more interested in. There have been many great stallions that we not great performers and for that matter, many great performers who were not great sires…

This year the BN list is once again headed by Glamourdale, and it might be noted that he is second on the WBFSH dressage competition standings. We know he is a great performer, even if some of us are not enamoured with the way he is shown, but will he be a great sire? Dutch breeding authorities seem to have decided that he will be, since they have already licensed 29 of his sons.

So far Glamourdale is the sire of five small tour competitors, a group that is headed up by the approved stallion, Kuvasz RS2. The handsome black is out of Dyor de Hus by De Niro, the daughter of La Traviata who is by Sandro Song out of Loretta, which makes her a full-sister to Sandro Hit. (For the trivia buffs, Kuvasz is a Hungarian breed of guardian dogs, indeed looking a little like the sheep they are bred to protect. Don’t ask why a horse is named after a breed of dog…)

Kuvasz was second reserve on the Dutch team for the 2021 World Young Horse Championships but his last FEI results were a couple of placings in September 2022, and currently there is a note on his stallion entry on the Van Uytert page, ‘unfortunately we no long offer Kuvasz RS2 for breeding’.

By merest happenchance, Kuvasz RS2 was listed to open the proceedings in Prix St Georges at Jumping Amsterdam earlier this year, so perhaps the mystery will be unravelled. The helpful team on the press desk in Amsterdam unearthed an article which heralded Kuvasz’s international debut, and recorded that he was out of the sport in 2023 for unspecified ‘health reasons’. Seemingly recovered, the stallion was ridden to victory by Mariek van der Putten with a score of 72.794. Mariek said that the problem was with the horse’s digestive sys-

tem and he is fine now and that she is taking him home to train for Grand Prix.

Glamourdale is something of an exception to the current trend of breeding to young, untested stallions that produce pretty foals for immediate sale. He tends to throw his dam sire Negro’s short neck, but thankfully there are mare owners who care more about the black stallion’s international performance career, rather than following the whims of fashion.

My friend Jens Meyer is a stern critic of the trend to fashion breeding and likes Glamourdale’s German/Dutch fusion. “I like the mix, we have the good back from the German horse, from the Dutch horses we get the front technique and the canter. I use Glamourdale, this is a young top Grand Prix stallion and how many stallions do we have in the sport? Not many. People say he does not produce, type, he is not a refiner for sure, but he throws a healthy conformation. His foals are uphill, and with power in the body. Okay, sometimes with the Negros they have a bit of a short neck but what is important in the end is that they are rideable. I hate it at the moment people just talk about problems with the stallions, not what they get from the stallion…”

The second highest BN dressage stallion, Hermès is another with a less than fashionable pedigree. He is by the Trakehner, Easy Game who was largely ignored by the breeders, indeed he was missing from the breeding barn for several seasons, chemically castrated, and sent to Belgium in the hope of a Grand Prix career. It didn’t happen and he returned to the van Uytert Stud. He died in July 2023, but not before he gifted the world two of the great Grand Prix competitors, including world number one, Dalera. While Hermès is currently 10th on the WBFSH dressage rankings, he has not competed since attending the World Cup final in Omaha in April 2023 – a victim of travel it seems.

This year’s number three is Ingrid Klimke’s frontliner, Franziskus (Fidertanz x

Alabaster) currently 11th in the dressage competition standings. At the age of 16 Franziskus is the sire of three Grand Prix horses, none of them stars. The most successful has been Brazilian team member, Feel Good VO (Dimension) ridden by Joao Oliva. Franziskus is however the sire of 34 stallion sons.

In fourth, Dante Weltino reminds us that once the W line ruled the dressage world. The stallion is by the De Niro son, Danone I who is out of a Weltmeyer mare, while Dante Weltino is out of Rihanna by the most successful son of Weltmeyer, Welt Hit II. Once again while he is the sire of 27 approved sons, his seven Grand Prix competitors have not set the world ablaze.

Fame (Bordeaux x Rhodium) in fifth, first shot to fame in 2021 when he won a British regional GP on his debut with Fiona Bigwood. It wasn’t until the ride went to Carl Hester in 2023 that he became truly famous, with Grand Prix wins at Tolbert and Hickstead, before the pair finished fifth at the European Championships as part of the gold medal winning British team. The 14-year-old does not seem to have been used as a breeding stallion.

Sixth placed Blue Hors St Schufro is another who has shot to the top, winning his first Grand Prix with Nanna Skodborg Merrald at Falsterbo in 2022, more recently the pair were first in the Grand Prix of Herning in 2023. The dressage world really sat up and took notice when his daughter Lynbergs St Paris shone at the World Young Horse Championships in Ermelo in 2021.

Jens Meyer who worked as a special advisor to Blue Hors is pleased that the breeders are now taking notice: “We are very proud last year (2023) he covered the most mares in his life. Before that people talked that his family was not good enough but the stallion himself has to produce, and he does it. Look at the World Championship at Ermelo, see what he produced. He is also not a foal maker, but look at his breeding, it is from the past (Jens is refer-

ring to St Schufro’s dam, Dorina, born in 2000 by Don Schufro born in 1992, out of Asta, 2000, by Atateurk born in 1977), but we do not change the horse, we have to produce good horses, that is very important to me.”

Seventh to Jovian (Apache x Tango) born in 2014 and the youngest of the top 10 stallions. Indeed there was considerable controversy as to whether it was right that an eightyear-old should be competing in international Grand Prix competition. Jovian’s pedigree is rich in the blood that made Dutch dressage breeding great, two crosses of Jazz, and one of Krack C. His sire Apache was a wonderful horse whose breeding career was shattered when he proved WFFS positive, initially he had been cleared, but when Jovian proved positive, Apache was tested again… Apache died in 2019, put down with laminitis. Jovian has so far sired 11 stallion sons, but I can find no competing progeny.

Eighth to Everdale, the first stallion to be declared a WFFS carrier. He is by Lord Leatherdale out of a Negro mare. The black stallion is a controversial horse, there are some, like me, who dislike the way he goes, while the judges disagree and keep giving him winning scores. He is the sire of 13 approved sons, and 23 Grand Prix competitors, the most spectacularly successful being Charlotte Dujardin’s Imhotep (Vivaldi) currently ranked second in the world.

The grey stallion, Hexagon’s Ich Weiss is in ninth. He is by the Rubinstein son, Hexagon’s Rubiquil, out of a Negro mare from the Utopia line.

Rounding out our top 10, we have Total Hope, by Totilas out of Isabell Werth’s great mare, Weihegold (Don Schufro x Sandro Hit). Weihegold has produced at least 14 foals, but of the five to compete only Total Hope has impressed, winning the prestigious Nürnberger Burg Pokal, before commencing a successful Grand Prix career. As a sire, he has already produced one foal that went on to compete at the dressage World Breeding Championships for Young Horses.

Eventing stallions

The eventing stallions list is no longer inflated by horses that are stallions only in the eyes of the FEI database. Hopefully all the horses on this list are still entire since I’d consider at least a couple of them if I was looking for a suitor for an eventing mare.

Number one on the list is Ero De Cantraie and once again this piece is sounding like a PR gloss for Joris de Brabander. The stallion is by Querlybet Hero, a 1m60 jumper, and an ‘ambassador’ for BWP breeding. Querlybet is by Baloubet de Rouet, out of the Darco daughter, Narcotique de Muze II from the famous Querly Chin line. Narcotique was herself a 1m60 competitor, and she is the dam of four 1m60 horses.

Ero De Cantraie is out of the Selle Français mare Iberiade by the Double Espoir son, Valespoir Malaby, out of a mare by the Thoroughbred, Quinquet. Which adds up to 50% blood, perhaps just a little less than the ideal for an eventing stallion, but let’s wait and see what he produces. Ero is being ridden by one of the most talented eventing riders in the world, Julia Krajewski, and last year the pair won the 4* at Luhmühlen.

Ranked second on the BN list, and

BREEDING NEWS STALLION RANKINGS 2022-2023 43 Stallion Directory 2024
Franziskus with Ingrid Klimke (GER)

48th in the world is Halo. In January 2022, Piggy March took over the ride on the three-star winner Scuderia 1918 Humphreys, who was renamed Halo. The grey stallion started his eventing career with Australia’s Kevin McNab. Halo won Osberton CCI3* in October 2021 with Kevin. Ridden by Piggy, the stallion was third in the 4* at Ainwick in July 2023, but 53rd at Hartpury, a month later…

The horse has been acquired specifically for the breeding program of Piggy’s husband Tom. Bred by one of Holstein’s finest breeders, Bernhard Hobe, he is by Humphrey, a 1m40 jumper by the French Anglo-Arab, Hermes d’Authieux, out of a Carthago x Landgraf mare, that’s 63.87% blood. Halo is out of one of Hobe’s legendary mares, Kimberly III (Contender x Lord).

The third stallion TSF Polartanz was certainly bred to event. He is by the Trakehner, Konvoi (by the Anglo Arab, Kallistos), out of a mare by the greatest eventing sire of them all, Heraldik xx, out of a mare by the 4* eventing Trakehner stallion, Habicht. Ridden by Felix Elzel he won the short format 4* at Strzegom in September 2023. Polartanz carries 69.34% blood.

Fourth, Je’Vall is a mixture of Holsteiner, Dutch, and French breeding. His sire, Zavall VDL is by Casall out of an Emilion mare, his dam, Wemillem is by Corrado and her dam, Nemile M is by Le Tot de Sémilly, out of a Jalisco mare. 48.44% blood. Ridden by Frenchman, Alexis Goury, Je’Vall won a 3* long format at Bazoges en Pareds, and was 6th at Lignieres CCI4*-L in September 2023.

I’ve written before about Sweetwaters Ziethen, another deliberately bred for eventing. Ridden by Sophie Leube, Sweetwaters Ziethen TSF topped the seven-year-olds at the eventing World Breeding Championships for Young Horses in 2020. The German pair were on familiar territory having finished fifth in the six-yearold division the previous year, and the stallion never put a foot wrong after posting the best

dressage score of 27.6.

The stallion is from the Sweetwater Stud in Bulgaria, and is by the Trakehner stallion Abendtanz out of an Anglo Arab mare by Campetot. Abendtanz’s pedigree is studded with the names of the famous Trakehner stallions –Sixtus, Kostolany, Enrico Caruso, and Kassiber. Sweetwaters Ziethen TSF was purchased as a foal at foot with his dam, and raised at Sweetwater. According to stud master George Muehlethaler: “Our aim is to breed Eventers with a minimum of 50% Thoroughbred, Anglo-Arab or Arab blood.” Sophie and Ziethen had good three star placings in 2023, with a win at Langenhagen 3*.

Sixth-ranked Tenareze is one I would certainly send a mare to. He was a star with Thomas Carlile, winning the six-year-old WBCYH title in 2013, and the seven-year-old championship the following year. He was sold in 2013 but has never looked quite so comfortable with Harry Meade in the saddle. The pair did get it together though in 2023 when they were fifth at Luhmühlen 5*.

Tenareze is by that good sire of eventers, Jaguar Mail who is by the showjumping and small-tour Thoroughbred, Hand in Glove, out of a mare by the Thoroughbred Grand Prix showjumping stallion, Laudanum. Seveneighths Thoroughbred, with the last line a combination of Almé and Gotthard. Jaguar Mail showjumped for Sweden at the Olympic Games, but he was never the most careful jumper, and Thomas Carlile believes he needs Anglo mares to give his progeny a tighter front. Sure enough, Tenareze is out of the AA mare, Utopie du Maury (Quatar de Plape x Julienny).

Seventh to Leipheimer van’t Verahof and once more we are making a trip to the Stal de Muze in the beautiful city of Sint-Niklaas, where Joris Brabander’s Thoroughbred mare, Southern Queen (Southern Gale xx) has established a dynasty of top eventers. Bred to Vigo d’Arsouilles (Nabab de Rêve x Fleuri du Manoir), she has produced Fletcha van’t Verahof, a 4* star front liner with Karin Donkers, and the

3* competitor, Extebaria van’t Verahof. Karin rode Leipheimer to third, at Boekelo 4* in October 2023. I wonder what would happen if Joris turned his attention to dressage breeding?

There are only eight stallions on the BN list this year, and rounding out the collection is the Anglo Arab, Bolivar Gio Granno. Unfortunately, the French Anglo has suffered from breeding neglect and, by the time it was discovered just how fine the breed was as a source of eventers, there were virtually no Anglo stallions left.

Thus, the most successful French Anglo Arab stallion of modern times, Upsilon, is by the Holsteiner, Canturo. Similarly, Boliva is by the Oldenburg stallion, Gio Granno (Grannus) but out of an Anglo mare, Native de Sautussan by Faalem aa, out of a Thoroughbred mare by Mirgel xx. Bolivar Gio Granno was eliminated at his last 4* start, Montelbrett, November 2023, after winning the 3* at Palmanova in September. ■

HOW MEANINGFUL ARE BIRTH STATISTICS?

Tostart by explaining these tables: this 2023 ranking counts youngsters born from 2016 to 2021 inclusive. Naturally, this does not include earlier-born sires who were approved retroactively based on either their own or their offsprings’ competition results – although these would likely be in the small majority.

Until we advance several more years, these tables represent the Covid and immediate post-Covid generations when studbooks either cancelled or hosted stallion licensings/approvals remotely. In the year immediately following Covid there was a small increase in foal registrations, likely due to competition mares being allowed to breed themselves. However, since then, the war in Ukraine and political unrest elsewhere, have created significant economic uncertainty that has negatively impacted the breeding industry.

Stallion owners are reporting downward trends that may be the result of fewer coverings, or mare owners taking financial shortcuts by using less well-known or younger stallions. Looking at the 2024 table we can see that the most popular stallion for several years, Cornet Obolensky has dropped by a substantial number, although he is still one of the most popular stallions in terms of frozen embryos being sold at auction.

The same can be said of Chacco-Blue, although his name has yet to appear in this table, so it could be that new breeders are freezing and stockpiling his genetics as investments for the future.

For Pleasure also sees a decline, as do several other leading sires on this list. In fact, although they remain on this list for the time being, if we compare the list between 2022 (in brackets) and 2023, quite a few of the sires have lost ground. Does this herald the start of a new era, or will we see them bounce back next year?

Among the stallions that have seen an increase in licensed sire statistics are Secret (adding four stallions to his name); Bon Coeur (+1); Dominator Z (+2); and Stakkato Gold (+1).

The notable new arrival making his debut in this table is Mylord Carthago who first made an appearance in our calculations two years ago, but with a total insufficient to make the list with two offspring.

Although we predicted a more positive role for Comme il faut NRW last year, he has lost one youngster, but this may be due to breeders diversifying, perhaps for economic reasons when a popular stallion’s price rises above their budget.

Once again, we should mention that Cornet Obolensky’s genetics are still proving to be highly popular at auction, which can be seen in the BN Auction rankings for 2023 in terms of foals sold, which is likely to further impact his rise in the coming years as sons are later presented as stallion candidates at the various studbook licensings. ■

SIRING THE STARS OF TOMORROW 47 Stallion Directory 2024

SIRE RANKING BASED ON SIX BEST-PERFORMING OFFSPRING

Theannual WBFSH/FEI horse rankings are based on points earned in FEI competitions from October 1 to September 30 each year. From these rankings we have created a list of the top sires per discipline by calculating the points earned by their top six performance offspring in FEI competitions. As some stallions have many more offspring than others, limiting them to their best six representatives creates a level foundation for comparison.

In fact, in early 2024 we received a communication from Anne-Sophie Levallois of Haras de Semilly, voicing her concerns over the calculation of the WBFSH sire rankings, as follows: “I would like to take this opportunity to suggest several points that would be useful to breeders.

“Evaluation of the production quality of the stallions: For the moment, the [WBFSH sires] current rankings are largely influenced by the number of products. The more a stallion has a significant production, the more chance he has of appearing at the top of the rankings. It would be interesting for breeders to have access to other classifications allowing them to see the intrinsic production quality of each stallion, if he is on average an improver

“Evaluation of ‘pure’ jumping quality: More and more artifices (hind gaiters, etc.) are masking the natural qualities of horses, which distorts breeders’ views of stallions and adds grist to the mill of animalist associations who want to ban equestrian sports. Banning all these tricks would allow breeders to improve their crossbreeding and make equestrian sports ‘cleaner’. This would also make it possible to avoid having events with more than half having faults, which are uninteresting for the general public.”

In fact, our Directory sire ranking based on the top-six performing offspring of a stallion has supported Anne-Sophie’s hypthesis for many years in what we also believe is a more ‘pure’ representation of a sire’s qualities rather than those stallions with the highest volume of competing offspring always rising to the top. ■

Note: Any bracketed number following a jumping sire’s name represents the small number of offspring contributing to the result – fewer than 15.

WORLDWIDE SPORT HORSE STALLION DIRECTORY

WHAT ’S IN A BIRTHPLACE, SIZE, COLOUR, OR YEAR OF BIRTH?

This20th edition of the BREEDING NEWS WORLDWIDE SPORT HORSE

STALLION DIRECTORY – our fourth digital version – includes over 10,000 stallions, cross-referenced to their owners/representatives in our online database. This number fluctuates marginally throughout the year as newly approved/licensed sires are added, and deceased stallions or those whose licenses have been revoked or have expired are deleted. This online format provides an interactive and dynamic database that allows owners or studfarms to self-manage their stallion entries, including uploading photos and/or videos.

CHART 1 – GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION of stallions on a global scale, per birth studbook. We have only included those countries whose total represents a significant percentage of stallions. Naturally, with the largest volume of studbooks, Germany occupies the largest slice of the pie chart, followed by France (SF and AA) and the Netherlands (KWPN, NRPS, KFPS). We

CHART 1

continue to include Thoroughbreds in our analysis as they are licensed for Warmblood breeding by any number of studbooks. virtually all the major studbooks, but have no relevance to birth countries.

‘Other’ includes Spain, Portugal, Brazil, Mexico, Australia, NZ, South Africa, North America, etc., representing virtually every continent that boasts worldclass sport horse breeding, but with a smaller percentage of approved stallions.

CHARTS 2 AND 3 – COLOUR AND SIZE, RESPECTIVELY. Typically, there are only small differences from year to year which are due more to the upgrading of information as it becomes available, although it’s obvious to the eye that bay continues to dominate.

CHART 4 – YEAR OF BIRTH: It should be noted that the smallest segment is 20162020, which illustrates the cancellation and or postponement of licensing events and approvals during the years impacted by the Covid pandemic. ■

AUCTIONS: THEIR DIVERSE POWER TO SEDUCE

Auctions... auctions... auctions... It’s obvious that their power to seduce remained an unmitigated success throughout 2023. However, some rather interesting conclusions can be drawn.

In 2022, the total number of horses sold at auction (based on available data gathered) for the top 40 stallions numbered 1,706, this number rose marginally to 1,730 in 2023. However, it should be noted that the top-selling sire in 2022 was Chacco-Blue with 287, while Cornet Obolensky topped the auctions leaderboard in 2023 with 144 – a 50% drop. Yet, their respective sales in euros amount to 6,387,480 (average €22,295) compared to 6,976,610 (average €48,449), so buyers invested virtually the same but for substantially fewer horses at the top end. Given the small difference in overall sales volume between the two years, this would indicate that buyers were spending the same, but diversifying in their choices.

It would be impossible to ignore what appears to be an anomaly in the foals and horses list: the singular sale of a horse by Swedish Warmblood Irco Mena – a 2016 gelding, no less – that was sold by Tops International for €1,000,000. Marco Monet is out of Coco Chanell 2 (Camaro M), and obviously purchased with sport in mind, so it will be interesting to follow his career which has, so far, not been auspicious. He was started in young horse classes by Sweden’s Victoria Almgren, passed to Francesco Turturiello (ITA) in December 2022, then four months with Frederike

Staack (GER),, before landing under the saddle of Qatari Hamad Ali Al Attiyah in December 2023. His best career result to date was fourth place in a 1m35 CSI2* class in Doha in January 2024. Whether his purchase was a good investment remains to be seen.

The statistics for embryos appear to tell a similar story: Chacco-Blue the top seller with 185 in 2022, held his number one place in 2023, but with 112 sales. Unlike the horses’ table, the investment differential is much less: 2,730,050 (average €14,757 in 2022); 1,823,150 (average €16,278 in 2023).

It’s obvious that the market for embryos remains at a similar level over the two year. However, it will be interesting to see whether the contractual controls being put in place by a few of the top-name stallion owners, some of whom are now also enforcing their own exclusive sale of semen rather than through third parties, might impact this market in the future.

As always, in terms of short-term financial gains it should be expected that sales volume eclipses rarity value, but given the number of long-deceased stallions whose semen sales are holding steady or even increasing, there is obviously still a great deal to be said for investing in the ‘known’ rather than the ‘unknown’ in terms of quality sport horse breeding.

As someone once said, ‘a good statistical analyst knows that you can’t let confirmation bias influence overall reasoning.’ ■

EXPLANATORY NOTES

• Life No: When stallions are sold and/or change nationality, a birth number may be lost or a new registration number subsequently issued by a different licensing studbook. The use of the 10-digit ULN (Unique Life Number) is gradually being adopted, if not yet universally.

• Birth studbook: For the majority, ‘part-bred’ means a Thoroughbred/Warmblood cross. Part-bred stallions are typically approved or licensed later in life based on their own or their offsprings’ competition results. In some cases, no WBFSH-recognized studbook may have existed in the stallion’s home country at the time of birth. Similarly, birth studbooks may have merged and former acronyms may now be meaningless to the majority of breeders. We have, therefore, adopted either the new studbook name, where it is provided and recognized, or used ‘unknown’. And, although the WBFSH does not recognize the Jockey Club as an independent studbook, many Thoroughbreds (designated by the ‘xx’ suffix) are approved/licensed for Warmblood breeding by a WBFSH member studbook.

Special note: Only full members and association studbooks in good standing with the WBFSH are included in the directory so, from time to time, a studbook and its stallions may be deleted.

• Clones: When a clone is approved/licensed as a sire by a member studbook of the WBFSH he qualifies for inclusion in the Stallion Directory. When a clone is listed in the Directory, we will add (Clone of CL) in parenthesis following their birth name. Similarly, in the ‘Breeder’ column, the name of the original stallion breeder will be followed by the clone’s breeder (where known).

• Colour: Among the world’s studbooks, nomenclature for horse colours are as diverse as the colours themselves. In general, we have adopted the birth studbook’s recorded colour, although they may not be universal. For instance, in Europe, a black and white horse is typically known as Piebald, but may be designated as Black Tobiano or Pinto by some breeding associations. It should be noted that the various shades of ‘bay’ (bright bay, brown bay, black bay, … etc.) have been condensed to either ‘bay’ (B) or ‘dark bay’ (DB) in the Stallion Directory. The online database provides a drop-down menu for colour abbreviations.

• Name: Where known, we have included a former name by which a stallion might have been commonly recognized, although this information is not always notified to us. Similarly, where a stallion’s name has been changed with the addition of a sponsor prefix or suffix, we have primarily retained the original name, with a few exceptions. In some cases, Cornet Obolensky being one, an entry may not include a birth name where they have all but disappeared from later pedigrees. (Hopefully, this will help to mitigate any confusion given that competition names change several times during a horse’s career.)

• Contact Information: To avoid confusion and maintain alphabetical integrity, it should be noted that the ‘proper’ names of contacts appear first; Lewitz Gestüt, rather than Gestüt Lewitz. Breeders are advised to contact the studbook of approval if no contact information is available.

• Conclusion: If anyone has any suggestions regarding the format of the entries or information provided, please let us know so we may consider useful changes for forthcoming editions of the BREEDING NEWS WORLDWIDE SPORT HORSE STALLION DIRECTORY (Online forms are available year-round for stallion owners and representatives to self manage information) While we make every effort to ensure that the information provided is correct, errors sometimes occur in stallion registers and the updated lists provided to us by studbooks and breeders, over which we have no control. ■
