Henfield Football Club Tournament

Editor’s Letter The Henfield Football Club Youth Tournament has become a very important date in the local tournament calendar and this year is set to be even more special, since it’s the first chance for the children to compete since 2019. We were thrilled to feature the tournament on our front cover, please do pop along (supporting the brilliant kids in black and white stripes of course!) and enjoy the weekend. The Henfield Jubilee Celebrations are really taking shape; we’ve added a centrefold ‘dates for your diary’ schedule in this magazine, but there will be more detailed information in June issue. We’ve also asked for some help from you. We’d like to publish some Henfield photos from Jubilees past; if you have any street party images you can share with us, please email me emma@bn5magazine. co.uk for our special June issue. A real highlight will be the ‘70 Years of Platinum Hits with the Brighton Beach Boys’ concert at the Henfield Hall on Friday, 4 June, it’s sure to be a sell-out so get your tickets soon. They’re a brilliant band who will be playing covers from throughout the years, 1952 onwards. Grab your dancing shoes, get dressed up and head on down for a right royal knees-up!

Bishop Park - Parking Enforcement

First Port Property Services, the Management Agent for the Bishop Park Estate, are introducing a Parking Enforcement scheme from 1 May. Residents and visitors will be required to display a valid permit in the vehicle windscreen and park in the indicated Visitor Bays for a maximum of 24 hours, with no return allowed within 12 hours. There is no parking allowed on any of the estate roads or verges other than the visitor bays. Commercial vehicles have to be pre-authorised and parked on property driveways or allocated parking space and are not allowed to use Visitor Bays. The scheme will inevitably cause an overflow of cars and vehicles into the surrounding roads / St Barnabas Marathon Challenge streets which are already congested and popucompleted! lated with walkers / cyclists using the Downs Link trails. BN5 Birds

I am writing this at the end of March and we are about to enter a cold, murky spell after weeks of sunshine. A friend has told me that a pair of Blackbirds already has chicks in a nest in her garden, she can hear the hatchlings squeaking and the male is flying to and fro with food. I hope the chicks keep warm over the next few days. In another friend’s garden a Wren has built a nest in her bird box. A male Wren has a hard time of it; he flies around his territory looking very important, fanning his upright tail as he sings his heart out. He dashes around building the ‘outer shell’ of more than one nest and, if more than one female is available in his territory, he will mate with as many as he can! Each female will decide which of his nests she wants and line it with moss and feathers to make it nice and cosy. This poor male helps with the feeding of the chicks so, if he has more than one active nest with chicks, could end up zooming around helping with each brood. Exhausting work! By the time you read this we will hopefully have heard the Cuckoo. These birds are a critically endangered breeding species in the UK and will have migrated up here all the way from Central Africa; a lengthy trip that most of our migrants have which is also exhausting! We are lucky to hear them in Henfield as their call is becoming less and less frequently heard in this country.

A Hand of Friendship for Ukrainian Families in Henfield Henfield Churches, Parish Council, Community Partnership and Medical Centre, alongside various organisations, businesses, groups and charities are coming together to offer a welcoming hand of friendship to the families who will be joining us in the village from Ukraine. The group will offer friendship and support to host families and new Ukrainian residents. It will offer signposting towards other support to help them settle into our village, such as medical and school contacts and practical help, including translation services. The group ‘Henfield for Ukraine’, will be calling out to the wider Henfield community for specific needs over the coming months, such as donations of goods for people setting up their homes, or perhaps offers of employment. For now, we are looking to create a database of those who can offer the following: Ukrainian or Russian speakers who can translate; Experienced teachers of English as a foreign language (specifically TEFL trained); Local businesses who may have suitable job opportunities available in the near future; People who would be willing to assist new members of our community from Ukraine in filling in forms or making telephone calls on their behalf; People willing to offer transport for our newcomers to attend interviews, shopping etc. A useful website is under construction (www.henfieldforukraine.com) offering information for host families and local people wanting to offer help in some way, as well as new Ukrainian residents in Henfield (the site is translated into Ukrainian). Latest news will also be posted on social media on the ‘Henfield for Ukraine’ Facebook page. The Henfield Helpline number (01273 494 420), will be reopening when the newcomers arrive, where a message can be left and someone will get back to you. For more information or to offer assistance in any way, please email henfieldforukraine@mjra.net, we’d love to hear from you.

Rohan’s walk for Dementia UK

Horsham District Mystery Trails

Editor

Luna Russell

Rohan and Anne Dewdney from Henfield have participated in the ‘Walk 30 Miles in April’ for Dementia UK, you may have seen them walking around the village or have followed their progress on social media. Rohan has Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) and as well as raising money for this important charity, this challenge encourages him to exercise daily. The mile each day is a significant challenge, and his friends and family are incredibly proud of how he’s doing. As we go to print he has walked in the rain and sunshine, all with plenty of encouragement from Anne. Each walk takes between 60-90 minutes. Rohan’s donation page can be found on Facebook by searching ‘Rohan & Anne’s Walk 30 miles in April for Dementia UK’ and it’s already achieved almost £1,200. Rohan and Anne’s last challenge walk will depart the Downs Link Car Park (next to the Old Railway Pub) at 2pm on Saturday 30 April. They’d love friends, family and supporters to join them on the last stage of their final mile which ends at Berrett’s Farm for well-deserved coffee and cake! Thanks to Kieran for supporting Dementia UK and hosting the final part of the walk. Any questions please call Anne on 07990 512134.

Chief Scout Silver awards

This month saw three of our Cubs from 1st Henfield Arun Cub Pack each complete their Chief Scout Silver awards. This is a hard award to achieve in normal times, but the fact that these three achieved it over some of the most disruptive times ever for Scouting, (where because of Covid we were on zoom sessions or socially distanced) is a great accomplishment, to which they should be justly proud. Congratulations to Sylvie Frampton, Barney Harris and Euan Devlin, all of whom will shortly be moving on to the exciting challenge of Henfield Scouts. Well done all.

fter a three-year gap due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Henfield Football Club are excited for the return of its youth football tournament which is set to be bigger and better than ever. This year’s tournament, which is the eighth the club has hosted since its inaugural tournament in 2012, is taking place on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 May on the Kingsfield, and will see 138 youth teams from 51 clubs from across Sussex, Surrey and Hampshire taking part. The tournament, whose headline sponsor is Pagoda Security, will feature matches across nine age groups ranging from age six to 16. Henfield Football Club will be strongly represented with both boys’ and girls’ teams across all age groups of the competition. 18 | BN5 Magazine

As well as watching the exciting football action on the pitches across the Kingsfield and at St Peter’s C of E Primary School, there will also be lots of other attractions to keep tournament visitors entertained including a bouncy castle, Horsebox Coffee, bar, ice creams, burgers, Goodness smoothies and sweet and cakes stalls. Tournament director Joe Warner said: “The number of clubs signing up to the tournament has been unprecedented. There is so much buzz and excitement for it, including from many Henfield players who have never had the chance to play in a home tournament due to the pandemic.” The club warmly welcomes everyone to come along and enjoy the football action and great atmosphere of the event, but parking is very limited, so if you live locally you are advised to walk to the Kingsfield if possible. If you need to drive please park responsibly in designated car parks. The first matches will start at 9am on both days, with games until 5pm on Saturday and 4pm on Sunday. Sam Witherden, Henfield Football Club co-chair, said: “We are thrilled to bring the tournament back this year, an event which has been over a year in the planning. We can’t wait to welcome visitors to our wonderful football club and to our beautiful village over the tournament weekend.” www.henfieldbn5.co.uk

He adds: “We are delighted to have had such brilliant support from local businesses who are helping to sponsor each age group’s trophies and medals, which will mean so much to the players. The club is also very grateful to Henfield Parish Council, Henfield Leisure Centre and Henfield Medical Centre for their support over the tournament weekend.” If you want any more information about the tournament please contact henfieldfcjoe@ gmail.com or follow the club on Facebook at Henfield Football Club and on Instagram at henfieldfootballclub. Henfield teams across a range of age groups have had great seasons and we are ending the season on a high, with the U14 girls team, managed by Gavin Williams representing the county in the national FA Youth Futsal Cup 20/21 in Kent later this month. The team have also reached the semi-finals of the league cup. The U10s, managed by Tom Wilson, also won the Henfield & District Youth League Cup Final (plate competition) hosted at Horsham FC in early April.

n our June edition of BN5 Magazine we’re planning a commemorative edition of the magazine celebrating the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty The Queen to conjure up the excitement and fun of past celebrations! “We’ve been using Henfield Home Checks since they began and cannot recommend them highly enough. Highly professional, innovative and extremely kind, they have transformed my father’s life and therefore mine. They have enabled my father to remain safe and happy in his home, despite him being elderly and an insulin dependent diabetic. Their friendliness and “can do” attitude have made the last year especially, so much easier and more enjoyable for us both. We feel extremely lucky to have them in our lives and honestly, I don’t know what I’d do without them.” Julia K - Hove

Over the last few years Sussex has seen an enterprising array of small rural businesses popping up all over the county. Foot of the Downs is one of these – about to celebrate its first anniversary.

food comes from, of what farmers are doing for nature, and welcoming visitors to enjoy the fabulous countryside that is our workplace” says Annie Brown (nee Harris), founder of the new project.

Run by a long-established Sussex farming family based near Edburton, Foot of the Downs is a small enterprise that offers sustainable glamping for up to 10 people in its two very stylish pods and shepherd’s hut. Views of the Downs and Weald from the site are simply glorious and couples and families can expect full modern eco-friendly facilities, each unit is self contained with its own loo, shower and kitchenette. A fire pit is ideal for barbecues. A welcome pack contains local produce including tea, coffee, cookies, body wash, and more. There are a variety of breakfast and BBQ packs which can be pre-ordered and left in your accommodation ready for you to cook during your stay. A free booklet outlines local walks and activities but, of course, the site’s proximity to the South Downs is its main attraction.

Beyond offering very stylish rural accommodation with full facilities, the Harris family is appealing to everyone to make the most of the countryside. The farm manager, David Ellin, is passionate about wildlife and downland birds such as Lapwing and Corn Bunting are flourishing on the farm. “We are custodians of this landscape; alongside running a mixed farming enterprise, producing meat and grain, we feed the birds during the ‘hungry gap’ from January to March and keep a protective eye on our local flora and fauna,” adds Annie.

Over the last 100 years, three generations of the Harris family have been farming on the South Downs; they have watched the rural economy suffer due to a number of factors quite beyond their control. Their future now depends on diversification and through Foot of the Downs they are reaching out to an increasing number of people searching out sustainable staycations.

David’s wife, Angela, is the site manager. She is busy building links with local enterprises to promote a whole raft of activities for families and friends to make the most of their stay – Dark Skies Festival, cycling and walking, photography, local history and much more... there is huge scope to share what is available right on our doorstep.

“We have got to be better at sharing the story of where our

Foot of the Downs offers visitors the opportunity to stay on a working farm, and make the most of the fantastic public access in the area. They are embracing the pledge to follow the Countryside Code: Enjoy, Protect and Preserve.

Foot of The Downs will be opening their gate for an ‘Open Farm Sunday’ event on Sunday 12th June. Jo Austin

hile amateur theatre sometimes struggles to recruit young members, Henfield Theatre Company (HTC) is blessed with a very talented and immensely capable youth wing. Their last production was shown only to invited audiences who were enthralled by the exuberance and dramatic sensitivity shown by the young people on stage. Now the public are going to have the opportunity to see them in action. Henfield Youth Theatre Company will be staging a one act play which will be part of an exciting double bill coming to The Henfield Hall on 21 May. The youth play is ‘The Real Inspector Hound’, by Tom Stoppard, a classic ‘whodunnit?’, but with a twist. This is a play within a play which explores reality versus illusion… two theatre critics get mixed up in the performance on stage, engaging alongside the fictional characters as themselves! This unusual play was masterfully crafted by Stoppard in the early 1960s and is an absorbing mixture of farce and satire. The Henfield production is directed by Karen Blunden who is experienced with drama education and has been largely responsible for furthering the development of the HTC youth wing. The second play in the double bill, featuring some of the more senior members of HTC, is ‘A Cold Supper Behind Harrods’ by David Morley. The author was inspired to write this play when he met veterans of the Special Operations Executive (SOE) and became aware of undercurrents of animosity amongst them. Invited to the Special Forces Club – an ‘anonymous building behind

01273 494002

Harrods’ – he learned from one veteran that the official version of the history of the organisation concealed instances of incompetent leadership and betrayal in the field. In the play, which is based on true events, three former SOE operatives are reunited in 1997 when the BBC are making a television series about heroes and heroines of World War II. As they await their turn to be interviewed, they discuss the circumstances surrounding the death of a lovely, spirited, young woman who was arrested as soon as she had landed in occupied France. Set in the garden of an English country house, what appears at first to be a gentle story of three elderly people reminiscing, becomes an intriguing one of unfinished business, guilt and revenge. This production is directed by Malcolm Harrington, one of Henfield’s well known and very experienced actors and directors. Don’t miss these two fascinating, but very different, plays which will be staged as one production at The Henfield Hall on Saturday 21 May. There are two complete performances (each including both plays), a matinée at 2.30pm and an evening performance at 7.45. Tickets, priced £10, are available online (www. henfieldtheatrecompany.com) or at the box office, Stevens Estate Agents, Henfield High Street (01273 492141). Richard Bates, Henfield resident and consultant solicitor at Cognitive Law in Brighton, comments on how products claiming to protect assets from care fees are sometimes too good to be true. Most people are responsible for the cost of their care if their assets exceed £23,250 (although the home may sometimes be disregarded). Due to worries about the cost of care, I’m often asked how to protect assets in order to leave a healthy inheritance. Often, clients want advice on locally advertised ‘wealth preservation trusts’ or ‘property protection trusts’. Marketed under a range of names, they typically cost £2,000-£8,000. Usually, the trusts are set up to hold the family home, claiming to reduce inheritance tax (‘IHT’) and protect assets from care fees. These arrangements are troubling though because, in my experience, they are often wholly inappropriate, especially now that the Ministry of Justice has scrapped the planned probate fee rise. It’s rarely a good idea to give your property away, even to a trust, as it can leave you without full control of the property and difficulty in arranging future finance. Most trusts I’ve seen were sold to save IHT, even when the client had no IHT problem. Broadly, spouses or civil partners can, between them, give up £650,000 tax-free, and a further £350,000 if their main residence passes to direct lineal descendants. In nearly all trust cases I’ve seen, these exemptions meant that no IHT was payable anyway. The other (misleading) selling point of these trusts is that they will ‘protect the home from care fees’. A ‘Deliberate Deprivation of Assets’ is where a person intentionally diminishes their wealth to accelerate contributions by a local authority towards the cost of care. Wherever possible, local authorities try to use such an argument to refuse to make payments. A local authority’s case is much easier to prove as a person ages, where there is a relevant diagnosis or if the scheme itself is advertised to ‘save care fees’! In addition, one can’t rely on an IHT planning argument if there isn’t an IHT problem in the first place. As a result, unwitting clients can pay thousands for an unsuitable scheme, provided by an unregulated company, often with insufficient insurance. As such, there is little recourse if things go wrong. There are a number of ways to limit care fees, including simply having the right type of will. Such wills cost a fraction of the price of these trusts and you won’t be parting with your home. So please, before you commit to a lifetime trust, do some research and decide if it’s right for you.

On 6 February this year Her Majesty the Queen became the first British monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, with an amazing 70 years of service to the people of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. She came to the throne in 1952 aged just 25 after the death of her father King George VI. All across the country communities are planning to come together to celebrate this unique anniversary over the bank holiday weekend, from Thursday 2nd to Sunday 5th June. Henfield is no exception with a range of activities and events planned, even starting the proceeding weekend! Here is a snapshot of what is planned next month so that you can save some dates in your diary; we’ll be publishing more extensive information in the June issue of BN5.

Put on your dancing shoes and join in a fun packed evening of celebration! Tickets are £15, available from Marcus Grimes and Christina’s in the High Street (cash payment). A pre-concert curry at £7.50 is also bookable when purchasing the concert tickets. Tickets are also available online at www.ents24.com/henfieldevents/the-henfield-hall. Any proceeds will go to Henfield Youth Club and the Henfield Haven.

You’ll find Henfield High Street bedecked with bunting and decorated windows, with many of the shops and businesses joining in the celebrations! There’s a Coronation themed afternoon tea at Christina’s; crown making and regal smoothies at Goodness; an exhibition of Henfield photos at the Henfield Club and the bar open serving Jubilee ale; a singing display outside Aspirations Dance School; a street party with ice cream and tea at Stokes; fun children’s activities outside R&H Pets; a Coronation celebration at the Post House café garden with royal themed food with beers, wine and prosecco; children’s face-painting at the Evangelical Church; Indian tasters outside Little India and paella at Relish, plus lots more!

Organised by Henfield Parish council, this is the real Jubilee headliner! Family fun with traditional games, your own picnics and afternoon teas on the Memorial Field. Everyone is encouraged to dress up in vintage and fancy dress from the last 70 years with ‘styles of the decades’ and lots of prizes There are children’s fancy dress competitions in three age categories (pre-school, KS1 and KS2). Homemade costumes are really encouraged so let your creative skills blossom! Bring your own picnic (various Henfield cafes are providing picnic items or pre-ordered picnics, or you can purchase from the Artisan Food Market) and there are food stalls from Rushfields, Goodness and a pizza van plus delicious afternoon teas from the LadyBirds and an ice cream van. Traditional games take place in the arena for children and adults (with prizes), there’s a great trail through the woods from Henfield Joggers and Patcham Silver Band are providing the musical accompaniment. Bring your own rugs or chairs Parking is very limited, so please walk or you can or catch the Community Minibus (departing from the Henfield Hall).

This Magical Place

M

y expedition to Antarctica was in 2019. The big day started on Sunday 25 February. Did I get to Scott’s base…? It started well and then due to weather conditions it was decided to make two landings over a four hour period. I was supposed to be on the second landing but sneaked on the first boat to leave. I was not going to wait when we were only 300 metres from the beach and I could see Scott’s hut. So near yet so far. I could not believe I was here! What a moment for me to actually step inside his hut. I paused at the door that Scott had emerged from to start his trek to the south pole. A very moving experience. I had been thinking about putting this show together ever since 2014 when Henfield Theatre Company performed Terra Nova. I wanted to use more visual techniques then to give a sense of beauty and poignancy to the story of Scott of the Antarctic. Technically it was difficult, so this production gives me a chance to experiment with those ideas. Following my emotional expedition to Antarctica and Scott’s hut on Ross Island in 2019, I came back with a lot of video footage and stills that could present Antarctica in all its glory. This combined with a lifetime obsession with the Golden Age of Antarctic Exploration gave me the impetus to produce this piece of theatre. Antarctica: This Magical Place is an experience using the Edwardian explorer Captain Scott to tell the story of 120 years of exploration, discovery and science. From the early 20th Century, to the present day. Captain Scott’s tragic expedition and subsequent legacy has helped to establish this vast continent as a constant light in the life of our planet. Using unique video and still images

from Antarctica, he takes us through the ages showing how this vast continent has been explored and gives an insight to the people who have investigated its valuable climate. One we need to protect for future generations. There have been many books written about Antarctica, its explorer’s and its secrets and recently the discovery of Shackleton’s ship Endurance has shown the amount of interest we still have in this magical place. This will be the world premiere of this production at the Brighton Fringe Festival 2022. Performance dates are: 6,7,8 May 2022 at 6.15pm; 27,28,29 May 2022 at 6.15pm; 2,3 June at 7.45pm. Tickets are now available at: Rotundatheatre.com or Brightonfringe.org I would like to thank the following for their help and contributions to this production; The Scott Polar Research Institute; Doug Parrott for the sledge construction; StageProjections.uk; Peter Ingledew; BBC; Ian Henham; TimeStorm Films; Susan Solomon; BFI (British Film Institute); Heritage Expeditions. Any profit from the performances will be donated to The Scott Polar Research Institute Field Team, to support their work in Antarctica.

Are you in crisis?

Are you struggling to buy food for you and your family, or do you know someone who is?

For a access to emergency, stop-gap food and essentials, call Horsham Matters:

0300 124 0204

Ask for the Food Bank and tell them you live in Henfield.

Open Monday to Friday, 9am-2pm How do I know if I’m eligible? By calling the number above. An adviser will be able to get you help and support. What will Horsham Matters ask me? The trained food bank adviser will ask you a few questions to assess your situation. Do I need to be on benefits or claiming Pension Credits to access support? No, there is no set criteria, other than being unable to afford to buy basic food. Will I have to obtain a referral voucher? The Food Bank adviser will assess your situation and either give you a voucher code to be redeemed in the Horsham Matters Hub van which visits the Henfield Library Car Park every Friday morning between 11.45am-12.45pm, or refer you for a delivery of an Emergency Food Parcel.

46 | BN5 Magazine

Do I need to travel to access my food parcel? If your need is not urgent and you’re able to visit the Horsham Matters Hub van you can come and select your own food parcel. If however your need is urgent or you cannot travel then local volunteers will arrange for it to be delivered discreetly to your home. Do you need donations of food? Horsham Matters welcome the donation of non-perishable food items in the collection baskets placed in Budgens Supermarket and in the porch of St Peter’s Church. For up to date lists of what they need please see horshamdistrict.foodbank. org.uk/give-help/donate-food/

- Important updates

S

ince 2019, at BN5 we have been successfully collaborating with Horsham Matters to provide essential food parcels for people if they are struggling to buy food in Henfield. A delivery service of Food Bank essentials has been a real lifeline for many people with short-term problems and we’re really grateful for the hard work of the Henfield B-P Guild who have helped with deliveries. Recently, there have been a few small changes to the way emergency food provision is managed in Henfield which we think will enhance the service. People in need of emergency food and necessities in Henfield are still encouraged to call Horsham District Food Bank (Horsham Matters) on 0300 124 0204. After individuals needs are assessed by a trained operator at Horsham Matters, they will be offered one of two options: 1. If the person has transport, is well enough to travel and if their need is not immediate, they will be given a voucher code and directed to the Horsham Matters Hub van which visits the Henfield Library Car Park every Friday morning between 11.45am-12.45pm. The van contains store-cupboard essentials and toiletries and a knowledgeable Horsham Matters professional is on hand to give advice on debt help, benefits advice and other challenges. However, they cannot allocate food without a voucher code anyone needing food must call the Horsham

01273 494002

Matters 0300 124 0204 number in advance. If the caller is in immediate need (for example their cupboard is entirely empty, they are incapacitated, or are unable to transport themselves), then a pre-packed emergency parcel of nutritionally-balanced store-cupboard essentials, and possibly a monetary voucher for fresh produce, will be delivered to their doorstep as soon as possible. This is short term, emergency help. We are proud to say that the collection of foodstuffs in the village to support Horsham Matters which started in early 2020 is going from strength-to-strength. The people of Henfield have been incredibly generous with around 10,000 items donated during this past two years via the collection baskets in Budgens and at St Peter’s Church. A huge thank you to Roger Bentley who tirelessly empties the baskets and sorts & transports the goods to Horsham each week. Separately, Stokes Newsagents and Corpus Christi Church have also collected independently and donated extensively. Food poverty and insecurity is an increasing problem for both individuals and families through no fault of their own. If you are affected, please don’t suffer in silence but get in touch with Horsham Matters on 0300 124 0204 who will be able to help you. 2.

Estate Planning

When the then Chancellor, Philip Hammond, asked the Office of Tax Simplification (OTS) back in January 2018 to consider how to simplify Inheritance Tax (IHT), two reports followed. The second, issued in July 2019, proposed a range of significant reforms to IHT. Then all went silent. Finally on 30 November last year, a letter from the Treasury to the OTS was published stating, “…the Government has decided not to proceed with any IHT changes at the moment, but will bear your very valuable work in mind if the Government considers reform of IHT in the future”.

survive seven years after making them. If you do not reach the seven year point, any IHT liability on the gift is reduced by 20% a year from the start of the fourth year, e.g. at 5½ years only 40% of the full IHT is payable on death. The OTS had proposed that the sliding scale of tax should be abolished, commenting that “taper relief is complicated and not well understood”.

Pensions - While the OTS did not make any specific recommendations on the IHT treatment of pensions, its report did say “….it appears anomalous that some pension policies can be included within in an Estate for Inheritance Tax purposes, while other comparable pension By the time clarity had arrived, the current Chancellor had frozen the IHT nil rate bands until savings are not.” The pension flexibility regime at least April 2026. By then the main nil rate band introduced in 2015 has increased the value of some pension arrangements in IHT planning. will have been stuck at £325,000 for 17 years. Between April 2009 and December T: 01737 781546 E: psamrah@mks.co.uk 2021, IHT receipts rose by 118%, while prices increased by 34%. In highlighting several features of the current IHT rules that it felt needed reform, ironically the OTS report supplied a list of planning opportunities worth considering. These included: Normal expenditure gifts – If you make gifts that are regular, out of your income (including ISA income) and do not reduce your standard of living, then they are exempt from IHT, regardless of their size.

In its second report, the OTS said it had heard “…from a few respondents that the exemption has on occasion been used to exempt gifts worth than £1 million for individuals with a very high annual income”. At more modest levels the exemption could mean, for example, that if your regular spending pattern has fallen because of the pandemic, you could use the savings to make gifts free of IHT. Similarly, any investment income usually automatically reinvested is a potential source of normal expenditure gifts. Outright lifetime gifts - Outright gifts suffer no immediate IHT liability and are free of IHT if you 60 | BN5 Magazine
