TEENAGER Louis Keane and Nailsea United amply demonstrated they are the team to beat again this season after overcoming arch-rivals Shirehampton. Watched by a large and enthralled crowd at Grove Sports Centre, the hosts had to claw their way back from a shaky start as Shire set about the leaders and champions for the past two years with a desire to upset the applecart. Yet, despite looking the sharper of the sides in the opening half-hour, they were unable to breach a typically staunch Nailsea rearguard when on top. Mark Savage’s men slowly but surely eased their way into the contest and, although they conceded an early second-half equaliser after Keane had fired the first of his three goals shortly before the break, they eventually took a stranglehold on the match to run out comfortable winners. Their boss, Savage, who could have been forgiven for fearing the worst following Shire’s brisk start, was understandably pleased with the outcome. “They were gunning for us; we’re the title holders and they, along with a few others, are the heirs apparent. match them and it paid off; the boys worked really hard and it was good to see young lads like Louis, who played superbly well, having only just been promoted to the first team, and George King (16), involved. It bodes well for the rest of the season and our future.” The Shire camp, their unbeaten league record over, looked shell-shocked at the final whistle, having given it their all. With Danny Morne fronting many of their best assaults via a lively display wide left of midfield, they should have snatched an early lead when prolific marksman Scott Bamford’s fine edge-of-the-box free-kick was pushed out by Nailsea goalkeeper Scott Kendall, who reacted brilliantly to reach up and get a hand to experienced midfielder Tony Beecham’s attempt to put away the rebound from close in. Kyle O’Donovan’s rasping effort was bravely blocked by United midfielder James Springett, while Bamford again drilled a low angled shot that had Kendall stooping down swiftly to claim. The longer it took for a Shire breakthrough to arrive the more
you sensed Nailsea might unleash a sting in their tail and sure enough they forged in front five minutes before the break. Ryan King’s deep corner had been clawed acrobatically behind by watchful goalkeeper Mark Winkler as it appeared set to dip behind him into the net. The visitors were unable to deal with the resulting flag-kick and, as Matt Long drilled the ball hard from the left side into the box, Keane reacted quickly to steer a left-foot volley past a clutch of players and into the net for the opener. Long squandered a gilt-edged chance to extend Nailsea’s advantage on the stroke of half-time as the midfielder headed King’s perfect delivery past the post from point-blank range, after King had shown great skill in evading the challenge of a couple of defenders to tee-up his team-mate. It got worse for Nailsea before it got better, however, as nine minutes into the second period O’Donovan scampered on to a searching pass down the left by Morne and determinedly advanced past defender and goalkeeper before calmly tucking away Shire’s equaliser. A minute later, Nailsea missed another great opportunity to restore their lead when Long broke through a huge hole in the Shire defence, but could only stab the ball past the advancing Winkler and a

fraction wide of the target. But there was no looking back for the hosts once Keane had notched his second goal, with a crisp left-foot strike from the left side of the area, which the sprawling Winkler did well to push on to the inside of his near post, only for the ball to corkscrew across the line and then trickle over it before Long, hurtling in, gleefully rammed it into the back of the net to be certain. Spurred on by his brace, Keane cracked two more attempts wide of the goal-frame before the jubilant teenage winger completed his treble with a sizzling swivel and left-foot thunderbolt from inside the box, after Long’s ball in had eventually dropped into his path. Kendall was brought into action late on as he dropped low to make a fine block with his legs to deny O’Donovan, before, at the other end, James Lee raced on to a magnificent King through pass to round Winkler and drill an angled finish hard into the gaping net to seal Shire’s misery. Ashton hit top spot ONLY one game was played in Premier One because of the Gloucestershire Cup games. Ashton United moved to the top of the table by beating previously unbeaten Fishponds OB 2-1. Goals from Matt Parker, Joe Weare and Grant Mathieson earned Stoke Rangers a 3-2 victory in a derby with Stoke Gifford United Reserves, which put them top of Division One on goal difference from AFC Hartcliffe, who were without a game. The three top teams in Division Three all had convincing wins, with Sartan United top on goal difference after they beat Fishponds OB Reserves 4-0. Lavender is the spot-kick hero for Shaftesbury GOALKEEPER John Lavender was the toast of Shaftesbury Crusade after two fine saves in the penalty shootout clinched a 4-3 victory against Glenside 5 OB in the first round of the GFA Senior Amateur Cup at Whitehall. Lavender also kept the hosts at bay with a series of interceptions during a 0-0 draw, before Simon O’Reilly, Mike Kelly, Jordan Stone and Dan Leese were on target in the spot-kick decider. George Saunders scored four goals and also missed a penalty for Totterdown United in a 7-1 away romp against Wessex Wanderers, for whom Nick Blackmore netted a second-half consolation. Remi Fergusson scored twice for Lebeq FC as they beat Wizard Wanderers 5-3 to reach the next round, with Makindi Kondwani, Leon Grange and Anthony Willier also on target. In the opening round of the GFA Sunday Intermediate Cup, Frank Gingell hit an 85th-minute winner for Three Lions as they beat Quayside

Liddington is too hot for Lane to handle RYAN Liddington was at the double as St Nicholas emerged victorious on the road following a tight Bristol North encounter with Stoke Lane. In an entertaining game, helped by a good refereeing performance by Joe Hall, Saints began brightly. They missed several chances before eventually taking the lead when Kyle Ford’s penetrating run and pass picked out Mike Jones, whose own neat ball found the unmarked Adam Rugman in space to fire home. Saints continued to press, but their finishing failed to match their approach work and Stoke capitalised by stealing an equaliser after a Saints goal-kick had been intercepted. However, the visitors restored their lead almost immediately as Liddington raced clear to score. Liddington soon doubled his tally by striking a sweet free-kick into the net. But Lane weren’t finished and

Lane found it difficult to break down a stubborn defence in the early stages, but there was no looking back once Collett opened the scoring after 20 minutes in pouncing on a defensive error. Collett also set up further goals for Jaden Daley and Shay Norris, while Will Lacey scored with a cracking left-foot shot from the edge of the penalty area. Ben Donne completed the scoring with a clinical finish into the corner of the net. Buccaneers Orange Under-11s also produced some clinical finishing to comfortably see off the challenge of Clifton United Bears with an 11-1 victory. Noah Wells fired four of the goals, Jacob Parker notched a hat-trick and there were two apiece for Flynn Witmore and Bobby Johnson. Right-back Olly Southwell surged

Referee Kirsty Campbell did an excellent job overseeing a lively and goal-packed encounter between Rockleaze Rangers and Shirehampton, which Rangers comfortably won 14-2 with Sam Larkins (5), Dan Whiteman (4), Daaryoush Ahmed (3), Benjamin Smith and Dom Riley all hitting the target. Particularly memorable was a delicate chip from Whiteman, which he lofted perfectly over the goalie. Shire deserved their two goals which were both very well taken by Bertie Powell. BRISTOL Ladies Union Red Under-10s were on the rampage as they handsomely despatched Downend Saints 7-0. Captain Sian Ellis and fellow defender Zoe Gibbs put up a nigh-impregnable wall, and goalkeeper Brooke Mallinson, in her lucky boots, was on top form. Martha Haines opened the scoring before Sammy Ogilvie’s mazy run from halfway ended in a shot too powerful for the Downend goalkeeper to keep out. Emilia Smith got on the scoresheet next, firing a pass from Haines into the top corner; Ogilvie notched her second and Flo Denbow bagged a brace to send BLU into half-time 6-0 up. The second half was a lot quieter, with just a single goal by Haines, although both Denbow and Maddie Rupprecht were unlucky not to score more. AEK Boco White Under-10s secured another clean sheet in sweeping to a 5-0 away victory over Portishead. Excellent running by Lydia Hall, and more solid displays in defence from Alex Titcomb, Trixie Wills, Leila Russell and Olivia Owen, proved too much for a battling home side. Mia Brain and Millie Lacey each scored two goals and a superb strike from the halfway line by Ellie Staples, which was punched away by the keeper, enabled captain Georgia Allen to tap home with the last kick of the game. Despite conceding five goals Portishead’s goalkeeper enjoyed an outstanding outing, while Lucy Withey was deservedly awarded Boco’s player-of-the-match. Outstanding performances by Lily Clapp and Maddie Cummins helped give AEK Boco Under-15s the confidence to secure their second victory of the season with an 8-1 away success against Portishead. The home side had taken a deserved early lead and that was the wake-up call Boco needed. The visitors responded to the setback in style and Shelby Lacey, Ally Phillips, Lydia Britt and Maddie Cummins were all among the goals. Although the final result was comfortable for Boco they were saved on several occasions by sterling work at the back from Rachel Grimes and Sophia Phillips. Sophie Price and Mayca Jefferis-Cuenca scored the second-half goals to see Bristol Ladies Union Under-13s to a 2-1 victory over St Nicholas. From the start Union dominated

and Price and Jefferis-Cuenca both went close to netting. The tenacious and skilful Jessica Fry and Madison Price combined well in midfield with Sophie Price and Olivia Burton, who rattled the bar following an exciting run down the wing after the break. Poppy Yeo, Chloe Smith and Ellie Haines did well to keep the Saints attackers at bay although their opponents did break clear to pull a goal back in the final seconds. Mangotsfield United Under-13s ran out comfortable 10-0 away victors over Downend Flyers in their third derby against Downend-based teams in as many weeks. The home side battled well in the first half and kept the scoreline down to a respectable 3-0 at the break. But Mangos came out for the second half with renewed determination and registered a further three goals inside the first five minutes before going on to enter double figures. There were hat-tricks for Jess Millard, Rachel Arberry and Charlotte Hines, while a Lucy Amos effort completed the scoring. While the back three of Mangotsfield had little to do, they cleared up whenever required and supplied good ball to their midfield and forwards, while Chelsea Giles had a hand in most of the goals with her excellent wing play. Bradley Stoke Under-11s saw off a battling Whitchurch Sports side 5-1 thanks largely to an impressive display by two-goal player-of-the-match Sophie Molyneux and strikes by Naomi Adams, Zoe Jones and an own goal. Lydia Tang and Olivia Hood also had decent efforts on goal for Stoke, who were nevertheless grateful to Zoe Maddock, Paige Fowler and Emily Hulbert for some solid defending which helped ensure the pressure was maintained on league leaders AEK Boco Blue. Pacesetting Boco maintained their seat at the summit by beating Wotton Rovers 2-1 in an entertaining game. Veronica Cummins scored a fantastic long-range goal to give them the lead, but despite the close attentions of Lucia Phillips, Charlie Sutton and Veronica Cummins, who were outstanding throughout, battling Wotton managed to equalise in the 25th minute. However Tishauna Keeping-Graham won it for Boco with a 35th-minute strike to keep them in pole position.

James McKimm epsport@bepp.co.uk A STOUT and determined Rockleaze Rangers Under-15s narrowly failed to produce a late comeback against a strong Bristol United team inspired by the tireless work of man-of-the-match Opi Edwards. Bristol threatened with early chances and, after flowing build-up play, both Malique Christian and Juanathan Walker failed to find the target from inside the box. Edwards also came close to opening the scoring a few minutes later, but he was denied from a tight angle by a good George Zographou stop. The home side continued to press with Edwards surging forward from midfield at every opportunity and although he was denied by a good George Nichols tackle, Christian was fastest to the loose ball and fired narrowly wide of the far post from left of the goal. Jordan Kearns wasn’t far away either with a curling effort after picking up a deep cross by Edwards following a quick short corner from Hisham Ali, but the defender was denied by the outstretched arm of Zographou. Walker, Edwards, Christian and Ali continued to pose Rockleaze problems as the visitors' midfield struggled to cope with the strength and pace of Bristol, while up the other end only Joe McKimm had managed to hit the target with two headers, the first from a whipped Hamish Barclay cross and the second via a long free-kick by Nichols, both efforts proving comfortable for Connor Weekes. Despite being pinned back for the majority of the first half, Rockleaze snatched the opening goal on 26 minutes after harrying the Bristol defence into a mistake. McKimm found Pat Dore, who cleverly slid the ball right to Ben Fisher and his right-footed cross was met with the faintest of touches by McKimm’s head to send it beyond Weekes and into the far corner of the net. Rockleaze started to get into the game more, but six minutes before half-time the scores were levelled when, after some slick passing down the left, Christian’s driven cut-back from the by-line slammed into the unfortunate Nichols and the ball squeezed in at the near post to make it 1-1. Bristol would surely have taken the lead two minutes later when a blinding run from the halfway line by Edwards took him almost clean through on goal. But out of seemingly nowhere Fred Welsman advanced with a top-class tackle to stop the speedy striker in his stride. In fact, it was Rockleaze who regained the lead just two minutes later. Dore picked up possession on the edge of the Bristol box and slotted the ball into the path of Archie Lock, who came steaming past him on his left. The little winger’s first-time attempt to bend the ball into the far corner with his right foot was well saved by

The second period began as much more of a midfield battle, with the only chance of the first 18 minutes going Rockleaze’s way when Dore sent Gabe Kerfoot running in behind United’s rearguard. But from a fairly tight angle Kerfoot fired his finish straight at Weekes. Bristol then almost took the lead when Hamzah Dahir got on the end of a superb through ball down the left
from Ali, but despite beating the advancing Zographou to the ball and poking it beyond the keeper, the big striker’s difficult first-time effort bobbled just wide. Thus far in the second half Nichols, Welsman, Billy Diamond, Jack Tattsbridge and Jude Hazelgrove, with Harry Martin sat in front of them, had all put in a good shift at the back for Rockleaze and managed to subdue the threats of Dahir, Walker, Christian and Ali, although Edwards continued to cause problems in midfield with his work rate. But 22 minutes into a half of few chances, Bristol took the lead for the first time as they finally managed to break down the Rockleaze defence. Christian skipped past Diamond and drove down the left wing before delivering a pin-point cross to the back post where Shepard Machemdze guided the ball past Zographou to

Thornbury on fire as he nets five against Fry’s HARVEY Thornbury was in unstoppable form in front of goal as War mley Rangers Under-10s continued their unbeaten start to the Division C season with a convincing 10-0 victory at plucky Fry Colts. Rangers came out of the blocks quickly in the first game to record a 5-0 win, Thornbury firing all five goals for Rangers with some impressive finishing. James Northall and Cody Perera were outstanding in defence for Warmley, while keeper Tom Vincent kept a well-earned clean sheet. Warmley went on to take the second game 5-0 too, Tom Williams and Lewis Parfitt each scoring two well-taken goals, while Kian Franco deservedly pounced to get his name on the scoresheet with a fine finish. Ethan Clay was superb in goal for the visitors and Dillon Monks excelled in the Rangers midfield. Thornbury Town Under-10s overwhelmed a competitive Avon Athletic team to record their first three points of the Division B campaign with a 10-3 win. The first game burst into life at the start of the second half via a stunning strike from Town man-of-the-match Charlie Moss, who was behind their second goal when spreading the ball wide for George Rowen to cross for Joni Gadish to tap in. Although Avon nicked a goal back towards the end to make it 2-1, Thornbury dominated from the start of the second game. The excellent George Baker hit a hat-trick and Sam Lee, Ashton Jeanes (2) and Theo Stowell, whose looping volley from the halfway line was the goal of the game, all joined in with the help of an own goal to see Town to a comfortable 8-2 success. It may have ended goalless, but the Division B match between Deerswood Abbotonians Under-11s and travelling Winterbourne United was a cracking encounter. Both sides created good scoring opportunities, with some gilt-edged chances being squandered, while excellent goalkeeping got both teams off the hook on more than one

when McKimm showed real desire to get on the end of a beautiful long pass from Welsman, who showed great vision to spot the run. Despite Weekes advancing quickly, McKimm was brave and determined as he slid in and prodded the ball past the keeper, sending it rolling just inside the far post for 4-3 and giving Rockleaze a fighting chance of snatching a point. Despite their best efforts late on, including a couple of last-gasp efforts that flew just the wrong side of the woodwork, it was not to be for the visitors as Bristol managed to hold on until the final whistle. Moments later Dawes notched his second of the game for the equaliser and Lane almost went on to win it as Cameron Tuckett and Tom Issac saw late attempts saved well. Harry Milton starred at centre-back as Bristol Rovers JSC Under-11s continued their unbeaten start with a comprehensive display and 3-1 first division win at home against a determined Whitchurch Sports side. Elijah Hayden opened the scoring with a great shot and soon after a free-kick rolled to Bradley Webb was met by a long-range strike that flew into the top corner. Hard-working midfielder Archie Dark added a third to send Rovers into the break 3-0 to the good, yet despite the hosts continuing to carve chances and finding the outstanding Whitchurch keeper in their way, it was their spirited opponents who netted the only goal of the second half with a late consolation.

Two goals from man-of-the-match Sam Hutton and strikes by Wayne Okutu and Daniel Mellon handed ’Church a 4-0 half-time cushion. Although a goalmouth scramble led to Boco replying early in the second half through Mason Williams, Reece Morgan’s hat-trick, courtesy of good set-up work by Hutton and Oscar Ighoakpokrire, and Toby Anstey’s stunning 25-yard effort, capped off a brilliant Whitchurch performance. In the same division, Stoke Lane Under-13s avenged three defeats at the hands of Frampton Rangers last season by beating them 6-2 with a dominant display. Ethan Ansell opened the scoring and it was 2-0 moments later when a defensive error led to Tom Wheatley side-footing into an empty net. Lane scored their third when Henry Birt’s corner somehow rebounded off the leg of Ansell for his second of the game. Frampton managed to grab a goal back, but Lane soon restored their three-goal lead as Will Ponting lobbed the onrushing keeper. Lane increased their advantage to 6-1 by half-time thanks to Josh Elgood and Harry Collett headers from Rollings corners before Frampton notched a late consolation goal. Fin Smith and Kai Elliot were in potent mood in front of goal as Henbury Colts Under-13s maintained their unbeaten start to the second division season with an emphatic 13-1 away win over Bradley Stoke. The tireless Joe Beardwell hit a second-half hat-trick and further goals from man-of-the-match Joe Abraham and Ethan Smith, with a superb diving header, ensured a comfortable three points. St Nicholas Under-12s extended their unbeaten run to three games with a hard-fought 3-0 win over local rivals Yate United Colts. After a goalless first half, Saints took the lead when man-of-the-match Tobie Parsons found Harvey Cheese, who cut inside his man on the edge of the box and struck a sweet shot into the top corner. Second-half sub Jensen Reader then made a run from the halfway line and held off two challenges before side-footing home from eight yards, before Stephen Hobbs made it 3-0 from close range in converting a good cross. Ashton Boys Under-15s continued their decent start to the season with a convincing 4-0 Division Three win over Rockleaze Rangers. Louis Partington broke the deadlock on five minutes with a delicate chip before Jack Alford’s powerful run ended with a rasping drive from the edge of the box. Gudjon then earned himself a penalty which he coolly dispatched to make it 3-0 at the interval and in a tighter second half Joe McGonely tapped home after a George Drissell thunderbolt bounced back off the bar. Rockleaze carved few chances due mainly to a well-marshalled back four. Meanwhile goals by Callum Tyler (2), Calum Rogers (2), his second from the penalty spot after Williams had been brought down, substitute Kevin Pearce and Jak Griffiths ensured Broadwalk Under-16s a 6-3 fourth division victory over a depleted Cadbury Heath team who finished up with nine men due to injuries and unavailabilities. The hosts, nevertheless, kept battling away and they were rewarded with a Cummings double and Chapple strike in an exciting end-to-end encounter which saw them trailing only 4-3 at one stage before their determined opponents pulled away.
