Dear Member,

With the formalities of the AGM and Captain’s Drive-in now complete, we welcome Club Captain, Carl Lawson and Seniors Captain, Mike Tozer to the fold and wish them the very best for the year ahead. The Ladies Section continues to do a fantastic job in navigating a busy golfing schedule without an official Captain and I would like to thank those involved for their hard work in doing so.

It has been a frustrating start to the year with heavy rainfall causing more course closures than we would all like, but we are now hopefully through the worst of it, and I am pleased to say that Aldwickbury has compared favourably against most clubs in the area in staying open through the wet weather.

In addition to the rain, we have also been kept on our toes with several fog delays, but thankfully the pro shop team

GM UPDATE

has worked its magic to get members out as quickly as possible on opening.

Please remember that two points on the golf course are used to determine whether it is safe to allow play, as it can often be relatively clear around the level of the clubhouse, but visibility can still be very poor on the lower holes.

Away from the course, the past couple of months have been spent getting everything in good order for the season ahead, whether that’s decorating, servicing plant/equipment or getting all of our contracted staff first aid trained (by the end of March we will have 28 first aiders), its always good to know that we are hitting the Easter bank holiday weekend in a good place.

Call to Sites Update

As many of you will be aware, the first draft of the St. Albans Council Local Housing Plan has been published and I can confirm that Aldwickbury Park has not been considered within this initial proposal.

The agents representing BGL will continue to monitor the situation throughout the consultation process, but at this point, there is no intention to make any further representation for the inclusion of Aldwickbury Park in the current local plan.

As a result, the company intends to work on plans to develop, improve and extend club facilities and will be actively exploring ideas with the local council.

Aldwickbury Hosts Another Successful BGL Awards Dinner

Last month, the Club hosted the annual BGL Awards Dinner, where 230 colleagues from all BGL divisions (Golf, Adventure Leisure, Ninja Leisure, and Estates) came together to recognise and celebrate our collective success over the past 12 months.

While we didn’t win any awards this year, I must recognise the food and beverage team who were outstanding in providing everyone with a night to remember. The food was delicious and with fast and impeccable service, I was extremely proud of the team and the event that they delivered.

It’s easy to forget sometimes what we have to offer on the other side of the lounge bar dividers, but if you are thinking about hosting an event of any kind, a family birthday, wedding, celebration of life, corporate meeting, or dinner, please do keep us in mind and remember that members receive preferential rates!

Employee of the Year

Congratulations to Lisa Lloyd who was awarded Employee of the Year in recognition of her hard work throughout 2023, stepping up to cover Sales Manager, Holly during her maternity leave while also managing a significant change in sales personnel having only been in the business a short time herself! Lisa took it all in her stride and was able to keep the forward books in a healthy position while doing a great job developing our new sales team members.

Tree Work

Over the past two months the greenkeepers and an external contractor have been working to address the 90+ actions identified in our recent tree survey (completed by an independent arboriculturist every five years). I am pleased to say that the work is almost at an end, with just some high-level dead-wooding still required on the boarder adjacent to the practice ground.

While some trees needed to be removed for safety reasons, we are currently engaging with schemes that will support us to introduce new trees and hedging throughout the site and aim to replant more trees than have been felled.

Cancelling Tee Times and Checking In

Mornings are finally beginning to open again with the earlier sunrises increasing the availability of tee times for our members to book – I appreciate that booking can be frustrating through December and January and thank members for their flexibility and understanding.

Members are reminded of the need to be courteous to others by proactively cancelling any tee times that are not required as soon as possible. The pro shop will be following up on all ‘no shows’ sanctions will be applied to repeat offenders. Rounds can easily be cancelled through the EliteLive App up to 24 hours ahead of the booking, or over the phone.

Please also remember to check in at the pro shop prior to play on either course.

Our Sustainability Commitments

Over the last decade, BGL Golf has worked hard to become an industry leader in sustainable golf and climate action. The company was the first multi-site operator to achieve the international sustainability award, GEO Certified, for all 10 of its sites and has

recently established seven core sustainability commitments that will guide the business over the coming years with a view to achieving net zero by 2026. These commitments are:

Planning, Policies and Procurement

Responsible procurement across our supply chain and exceeding legislation.

Staff and Customer Engagement

Engage staff and customers to foster their understanding, support, action and pride.

Talking Climate Action

Minimise emissions across operations, maximising carbon storage across our business.

Conserving Resources

Being efficient with clean and renewable energy; diversify water sources and minimise consumption; reduce single use materials and waste to landfill.

Fostering Nature

Protect and enhance habitats, biodiversity, and ecosystem services, manage turf responsibly and avoid pollution risks.

Strengthening Communities

Provide health and wellbeing through accessible products, while continuing to outreach into communities as a force for good and behaviour change.

Tracking and Reporting

Track and analyse sustainability performance indicators to create annual facility and group wide reports and recommendations.

Our new website (currently in production) will provide members with data and tracking that show the club’s sustainability progress across a variety of metrics, and we will also use the newsletter to keep you up to date with the changes we are making on a day-to-day basis and the positive impact that these have.

GM UPDATE

An example of the changes we have made over past weeks:

• Our crisps in the bar are now supplied by the British Crisp Company, the reason for this is that they are made within the UK (as the name would suggest!) but also come in a fully recyclable packet.

• In the pro shop, we sell over 3,000 bottles of water a year and have now moved away from plastic bottles in favour of Water in a Box, cardboard-packed water containers that are sustainably sourced, have plantbased packaging, and a much lower carbon footprint than other alternatives.

• Our new gas boilers have now been commissioned and are expected to consume 18-20% less gas than the previous ones, reducing our carbon footprint by 14,500kg over the next five years. In addition, we are also looking at the potential of introducing a supplementary solar thermal system to further improve efficiency.

We will keep you updated on the changes and initiatives introduced as we make our way towards net zero, and please feel free to let us know any ideas or suggestions you have that could help us on our journey!

I look forward to seeing you at the Club soon!

CAPTAIN’S UPDATE

Dear Redbourn

Carl Lawson Club Captain A Message From The Captain

A very warm welcome to you all and the first newsletter of 2024.

It seems an awfully long time ago when, in the spring of 2001, I came up to the club to have a look around and decided to join. I have seen the club and the course develop and improve in that time and I believe we have a great club to be a member of. It is an honour to be Club Captain and I am delighted to be taking on the role this year.

Race Night followed and was, once again, well attended, and great fun. Even better, we were delighted to discover when all the counting was done, we had managed to raise £1,200 for this year’s charity, Macmillan. This is an amazing total and thank you to everyone who supported the event, especially those involved in making the whole evening a success.

We then move on a few days to the last Saturday in January and the Captain’s Drive Out. This was an excellent occasion and rightly capped off a terrific year for Steve Pick as our Club Captain. I had the pleasure of playing with Steve, Graham Payne and David Phillips on the day and a good time was had by all. Unfortunately, our team score on the day was not good enough to win and that honour went to Matt Bullock, Pauline Anderson, Corin Superfine and Christian Apsey. Well done to them!

It might be winter, but January and February are busy months at the club so let me start by covering the key events that have happened in this period.

We began with our annual Awards and Race Night, an important club evening in late January.

The following week saw the Club’s AGM. This is the moment when the new captains officially take up their posts. After a bit of wrestling Steve and I managed to get my jacket on which marked the start of my captaincy year!

The evening started with the presentation of trophies to winners in each of the club sections over the last year and the photo of the occasion shows the many happy golfers who were there to get their hands on that trophy once more!

CAPTAIN’S UPDATE

Dear Redbourn

Saturday arrived and brought with it the Captains’ Drive In! The picture with everyone on the 10th tee captures a great moment as Mike Tozer, Seniors Captain, Van Higby, Ladies Section Representative, and I got ready to drive in. The goodwill from everyone there was amazing and helped to balance the trepidation of the coming drives. Fortunately, we all got our drives away and recorded respectable yardages in the ‘Guess the Distance Drive In Sweep’. The team format and shotgun start seemed to work well, particularly as we had a full clubhouse for the prize-giving. Congratulations to the winning team of Christian Apsey, Martin Lythgoe, Caroline Leith and Bobby Kennedy who pipped us to the first prize. Our club charity Macmillan was generously supported once again with £790 raised from the Raffle and Drive in Sweep.

We then hit a spell of wet weather and we had to reschedule the Copper Cup (Winter League Final) and the Valentine’s Pairs event was cancelled. We have now played the Copper Cup and I am pleased to say that Gareth McNeill, our new Vice Captain won with a very impressive 40pts.

At this time of year, with soft greens, it is more important than ever to repair your pitch marks. It would be a great help if you look for and repair one more pitch mark when you are on the green waiting for others to hole out. With the Easter holiday coming early this year there are a few competitions that I would encourage you to sign up for:

• Ping 4BBB (Mixed) on Saturday 23rd March. Winners get entry into the next round of this national competition.

• Ladies v Gents (Pairs Matchplay) on Friday, 29th March, always enjoyable and very competitive (yet to be posted).

• Spring Texas Scramble (Mixed) on Monday, 3rd April.

HGU Competitions

Our county organisation run an extensive list of events each year. These are often good value and played on great courses. A full list can be found at the following link:

Finally…

Enjoy your golf and I look forward to meeting you at the club and on the course.

CAPTAIN’S UPDATE

Dear Redbourn

Aldwicks’ Captain

A Message From The Aldwicks Captain

Firstly, I would like to say I am both delighted and honoured to be selected as the Aldwicks (Seniors) Captain for 2024 and take over from Mick Beaufoy who did a wonderful job in 2023.

Liz Robinson

It is with great sadness that I announce, we have lost one of our founder members of APGC with the passing of Liz Robinson.

Liz and her husband Colin have been extremely active members of our club, with Liz having served as Captain in 2005.

Liz was not only successful in winning numerous competitions and trophies, but she was resolute in rallying the ground staff during those earlier years, setting and maintaining the high standard of our course and greens we enjoy today.

My year as Vice Captain has been enjoyable, and I have been privileged to have had a great deal of support and advice from many past captains, committee members and all the APGC staff.

I would also like to thank those who sit on the Aldwicks committee for their contribution to running the various aspects of our Aldwicks section which will be invaluable for my year as captain.

Member, Giatinum nobitae eici officipicit ventur, conesequat quatur, quodist ruptat. Soon after Liz fell ill, her husband Colin devoted his time to care for her, and as a result, he has been missed at the club. Colin has continued to assist the captains and committee members with his stewardship contributing to the club sections’ administration and we are very grateful.

As a testament to Liz and Colin’s huge popularity, Liz’s wake was held at the clubhouse and attended by more than 200 people.

These are just two unsung volunteers of our club who are worthy of our recognition and without them, our club would be all the poorer.

Liz will be sorely missed, and we hope to see Colin at the club soon.

We have an extensive list of events, and competitions, as well as 12 home and away matches against other clubs, so our calendar for the year is fairly full of weekly events.

I do hope you will be able to join us in as many events as you can this year, and I wish you all a happy and successful year ahead.

CAPTAIN’S UPDATE

John Harris

One of our good friends, John Harris has moved out of the area to set up a home on the South Coast and we paid tribute to John by presenting him with a leaving present and enjoyed a celebration with him in the clubhouse.

Dear Redbourn

John is a big personality and an enthusiastic member of the Aldwicks so he will be missed.

We will keep him updated with some of the special events like the captain’s away day and charity events which he wishes still to be a part of.

Winners of the Christmas Golf Day.

John Harris departed to sunnier climes!

What’s been happening so far:

Member, Giatinum nobitae eici officipicit ventur, conesequat quatur, quodist ruptat. Weather wise, it’s been an indifferent start to our Aldwicks Section golf year and several events and competitions were cancelled or postponed. One major event of the year to fall foul of the weather was the Aldwicks Christmas Golf and Lunch event. As this couldn’t be held in December it was held in early January and whilst it didn’t have the usual Christmas bon homme it was a very enjoyable day and a great opportunity to catch up with many friends.

A special thanks and acknowledgement were made to John Harris who was part of the Aldwicks team which won the Burhill Triangular Challenge.

One of the highlights for the end of January was the Race Night which followed the annual prize-giving evening. This was a major success and a personal thanks to Chris Westcott who organised the evening together with a marvellous team of volunteers. Over £1,100 was raised for the charity and many who attended expressed an interest in running the event again.

It was a pleasure to be able to host Miranda, Brian and Paige for the Christmas Lunch and it was nice for the Aldwicks to show appreciation of their hard work and great service to our section.

CAPTAIN’S UPDATE

Appeal for a Vice Captain

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to appeal to anyone who may be interested in getting more involved in the Aldwicks Senior Section as we are looking for a Vice Captain for 2024 leading into 2025.

Dear Redbourn Member,

APGC staff decorated the room to look fabulous and cheery (for mid-January)

Captain Mick Beaufoy presenting Craig with the Aldwicks customary Christmas gratuity to the grounds staff in appreciation for making our greens “impossibly difficult to putt on”!

Giatinum nobitae eici officipicit ventur, conesequat quatur, quodist ruptat. Ecte verest qui necation natem cori sament officid quiatem facidusam ducid mi, odis eatus autas doluptae

It is a rewarding role made all the easier with the support and backup of a very experienced committee who make a tremendous contribution to the running of the Aldwicks section. We also have the benefit of many who undertake the organising of the many events and fixtures throughout the year. This relieves the captain of a great deal of the administrative workload, and we are always grateful to those who organise and run these events seamlessly.

So, with all the committee and administration in place, I wonder if anyone would consider the role of Vice Captain leading into the Captain’s role for 2025. Not only will it prove a rewarding role, but it also carries with it the benefits of having your Aldwickbury GC membership paid for the year, a dedicated parking space and a generous clothing allowance.

The committee and I would be happy to expand on the role and please let either of us know if you would be interested.

If I can do it anyone can!

LADIES REPORT

Well, 2024 is now up and running. The weather hasn’t been too kind to us with the course being closed quite a few times either because of rain or the greens unplayable with the frost coming out of the greens following the freezing weather. Relatively quiet on the golfing front, although it has been pleasing to see good numbers for the mix-ins and fun competitions.

Our Ladies

Dear Redbourn

The Yellow Ball on 14th and 17th January was won by Margaret Chury, Dale Wood and Judith Pearson (who got an eagle on the 4th hole scoring 6 points, shame it wasn’t her turn with the yellow ball!) with a fantastic score of 149, second place being Van Higby and Janet Ball with 139 points, helped by their ghost being Lucinda Mileham.

The Texas Scramble on 28th and 31st January was won by Elaine Meagher, Pauline Anderson and Caroline Skelton with 64.3 points, second being Linda Reeve, Lucinda Mileham and Claire Henshaw Green with 67.0 points. The winners on Wednesday were Helen Greensmith, Jacquie Farley and Penny Fairweather with 60.7 points, playing to the wrong rules!!

The only fun competition in February was the Walz on 11th and 14th, which was won by Elaine Meagher, Linda Reeve and Lucinda Mileham with 73 pts, second being Helen Greensmith, Dinah Howard and Laurel Horan with 68 pts.

The Ladies Annual Meeting took place on 31 January and was well attended. The minutes and reports will have been forwarded to all members. Unfortunately, nobody has stepped forward to take on the Captaincy role so the section with be run by a Committee in 2024. The meeting was followed by the Awards for 2023, with the group photo of all winners that were in attendance.

March is the return of qualifying competitions and knockouts. Please try to sign up to as many as possible to support your Ladies Section.

COURSE UPDATE

Dear Redbourn

Dear Members,

Quite a lot of activity over the course since the last newsletter and a lot of rainfall has also come down on the golf course, but the signs of spring are only a matter of weeks around the cornerwell that’s what I try to keep telling myself.

The start of 2024 carried on from how 2023 finished with very wet and mild temperatures, we have seen already 325.6mm in just these two months alone compared to just 116.6mm in 2023. We have had a few closures, and this has been very frustrating, but these are only to protect the course and for members safety and some were out of our control due to the weather. The greens staff have always done their very best to always keep the course open and sometimes Mother Nature has other ideas. I know that the post and roped areas on the course have been more excessive than in previous years but the damage to the target areas and high-traffic areas has been very minimal.

Member, Giatinum nobitae eici officipicit ventur, conesequat quatur, quodist ruptat. Ecte verest qui necation natem cori sament officid quiatem facidusam ducid mi, odis eatus autas doluptae exeratium fugia dunt quam vellandit ipis con peligendel etur, odisciis doluptur, eum dolum repra am faccus expel iunt.

Firstly, to Steve Pick and Mike Beaufoy as outgoing Captains for 2023, it was a great year on the course and a smooth running of all competitions and events. Secondly congratulations to Carl Lawson and Mike Tozer on their Captaincy for 2024, I’m sure it will be a great year. I had fantastic feedback from a lot of the members that played in the Drive Out and Drive In with the general course condition but mainly the speed of greens and how true they were rolling.

Considering the amount of rain the course always seems to bounce back very quickly, green staff have worked very hard after a heavy deluge of rain to get the bunkers reinstated which is no easy task.

Greens have also performed well in coping with that amount of rainfall time and time again. The work that has been done during the autumn renovations, the use of our air2g2 machine, regular solid tining and the use of penetrants all come together to help keep the greens moving forward. You may have seen some disease scarring on the greens over the winter period with fusarium. Everything was done to keep this at bay but with the wet and mild weather it is the perfect conditions for this to happen. We will be overseeding in the spring and this has already started to grow out.

COURSE UPDATE

You may or may not have seen a small amount of tree work on the course over the last few months. There have been quite many members asking why this is necessary to take down so many. As some of you may know we had a tree survey done late in the summer of 2023 and this was done across all BGL Sites not just Aldwickbury, this is done every five years, and it gives us a great picture of the health of the trees that we have on our estate.

Many trees needed to be removed and felled, due to being dangerous and on some, a closer inspection showed that they were rotten. But mainly a lot of the trees on the course that were marked on the survey just needed dead wooding and to have the canopy cleaned out. This has been a very aggressive approach to get this done over the winter months as we won’t get a chance to tackle this work during the summer, and we now head into the season with our trees safe and in good order.

Member,

We have also started our big project to upgrade the 18th tee. This has been something I have wanted to tackle for many years since being course manager at Aldwickbury. The white tee has never been large enough to cope with the amount of wear and tear from the playing season and it has never been level.

The yellow and red tee will also be reshaped and extended to the left which again will give us more teeing ground and more space to manage wear and tear.

In between all this work on the course we have still been maintaining all playing surfaces, managing to get machines out when conditions allow to keep the definition and playability.

Giatinum nobitae eici officipicit ventur, conesequat quatur, quodist ruptat. Ecte verest qui necation natem cori sament officid quiatem facidusam ducid mi, odis eatus autas doluptae exeratium fugia dunt quam vellandit ipis con peligendel etur, odisciis doluptur, eum dolum repra am faccus expel iunt.

So, the plan is to have the trees removed at the back of the whites and extend back giving us more teeing ground to use and healthier growth with improved sunlight.

Also, I must give a huge thank you to Gill Lee who has over the last five years volunteered so much of her own time and effort in helping maintain all the flower beds with all the pruning, weeding and mulching around the clubhouse, 1st and 10th raised flower beds, making up and growing all the hanging baskets - a lot of work has gone into giving so much colour around our clubhouse and on the patio. Gill, from the green staff and everyone at the golf club thank you so much. If members can please avoid cutting across the flower beds, then this will be greatly appreciated by us and Gill.

See you at the course soon.

PRO UPDATE

Dear Redbourn

Tip Of The MonthGapping

Unlocking performance with proper golf club gapping is very important for your wedge game in and around the greens.

Gapping refers to the intervals between your shot distances with different clubs. The size of the gap depends on how much clubhead speed you have. For wedge gapping, you want to identify the highest lofted club you plan to carry (generally 56 - 60 degrees) and how far you hit it on a full swing. Then determine how far you hit your 9 iron. Take the gap between those two distances and divide it by how many wedges you plan to carry. Here’s an example:

Member, Giatinum nobitae eici officipicit ventur, conesequat quatur, quodist ruptat. Ecte verest qui necation natem cori sament officid quiatem facidusam ducid mi, odis eatus autas doluptae exeratium fugia dunt quam vellandit ipis con peligendel etur, odisciis doluptur, eum dolum repra am faccus expel iunt.

Say you have four wedges in your bag. You hit your 60-degree wedge 70 yards and your 9 iron 130 yards. That means you need to cover 60 yards across four wedges in 15-yard gaps. In this scenario, you should have lofts set to hit your sand wedge 85 yards, gap wedge 100 yards, and pitching wedge 115 yards.

Bitatur, sinctin nobist modiatio blaboritat estia quo voluptatur aperfer fercia pos ut optaquid quas

Gapping is important to maximize the utility of each club. As golfers, we are limited to 14 clubs and we want to cover a large range of distances with minimal intervals. Proper gapping ensures that no two wedges go similar distances.

The easiest way to adjust your distance is with a loft. Changing loft by one degree generally changes carry distance by roughly two to three yards.

If you are interested in checking the gapping of your wedges just let me know.
