I

love to hear from readers and I had two phone calls today – one from a lady wanting advice with what to do with a pre-loved piece of vintage furniture– I was glad to be able to suggest some local businesses whom I thought would be able to help. The second was not such an easy conversation as I realised that some careless editing on my part had caused offence. Last month we printed that The Fox and Hounds in Exton had had a ‘chequered past’ – I know that this is not true and it took previous proprietor, David Hiller, to remind me. David and his wife had a very successful run that spanned 22 years from 1980-2002, leaving only due to poor health, and then of course Valterna and Sandra Floris, with their Italian influence, enjoyed a further, prosperous 13 years. So my apologies to David whom, now with his wife wheelchair bound, doesn’t eat out often but when asked for a recommendation he replied that Greetham Valley and The Potting Shed at Ashwell are perfect for their needs. And, oh dear, more apologies to Aleisha White for a website address error also in last month’s edition. Aleisha runs The Care Advice Centre and you can reach her on Tel: 01572 720705 or through her website www.care-advice-centre.co.uk. Thanks also for the email from 19 year old Joshua Pozerskis, who responded to my request last month. He is running in the Silverstone Half this month. Joshua is a newly qualified pilot – one of the youngest CPL holders in Europe, who discovered his passion for running whilst studying for his pilot exams in Northern Greece. Running became escapism from a truly demanding schedule: “The thing I love most about it, from the first time I ran alone, was the freedom, fresh air, exercise, and, of course, you just can’t beat that post-run feeling! Running gives something else to focus on. I’ve done many sports in the 19 years I’ve lived so far, from sailing to skiing, tennis to rugby, swimming to gliding, and more! But running is very different and also something you don’t really need to commit to or spend a lot on.” Clearly Joshua is a very driven young man and we wish him luck in his first event. Keep in touch

ENNY Creasey is an award winning ceramicist whose work in porcelain is so delicate and detailed it is often mistaken for paper. “I treat the porcelain as Greetings cards by Sarah Hatherill at though it was paper and Well Street Studio enjoy experimenting with its translucence,” she says. “I like the playful idea of making one material look like another.” As well as developing her own designs, Jenny invites guest crafters to lead all kinds of workshops at Itch, the gallery she owns and runs on Oakham’s Mill Street. “The workshops are so rewarding as people often categorise themselves as being ‘rubbish at art’ and then to see them unlock a creative side of themselves is quite magical.” Find details of all the workshops and events at Itch at www.itchgallery. co.uk or speak to Jenny on Tel: 01572 755333. Emma Marsh from Bisbrooke is a multitalented graphic designer and illustrator specialising in bespoke watercolours of children. Her ‘A Few of My Favourite Things’ series feature beautifully painted images of children ideally with some of their special things. “I work from photos of the children and can include pets or special toys - the portraits are very popular as birthday or christening gifts and are a lovely way to capture a moment in time.” Emma’s portraits are 20cm x 20cm and are £50 unframed or £70 in a simple white wooden frame. Personalised children’s portraits by Emma Marsh Talented second-time author and Rutlander, Beth Cortese has launched ‘The Sharson Chronicles’, her latest creation for children. “Sharson is a kingdom filled with mad adventures and colourful characters,” she explains. A highly imaginative cast of characters includes a scheming scientist called Cromdork, Klanky, the shaggy dog in shining armour, Chatter and Banter, a pair of gossiping geese, and the local natural disaster expert, Ernest Tremor. Beth takes her inspiration from her rural Rutland roots where she grew up surrounded by a menagerie of ducks, chickens, rabbits and guinea-pigs. In addition to her writing Beth is a performance poet who has enjoyed success in national competitions and festivals. She says she is not afraid of spiders as was proven with the subject matter of her first book ‘Buttercup and Her Many-Legged Friends’. Both books have been illustrated by Beth’s sister Lucy. The Sharson Chronicles is available in paperback priced £7.99 at Rowanvale Books www. rowanvalebooks.com ISBN 978-1-910607-67-1 Langham based creative powerhouse Sarah Hatherill is a graphic designer with a solid background in branding and marketing with many commercial clients in the region. Operating from her own Well Street Studio, Sarah has a new range of greetings cards and prints which are stocked at the Dotty Gallery in Twyford and in Itch Gallery as well as through her online shop. As well as being in demand to take part in exhibitions across the region, Sarah also runs creative workshops – look out for this month’s event which helps individuals establish their own interior design mood board, titled ‘Be Your Own Interior Designer’. Also current and available via her website is a special limited edition print featuring one of the stained glass windows at Langham Church which is being sold to help raise church funds. www.wellstreetstudio.co.uk or www.dottygallery.co.uk

Rutland Photography Club Keith Simpson, who has been kindly providing photography for Rutland Living over the past few years, along with friend Jamie Hassall have recently started a photography club for Rutlanders and anyone living in the neighbouring counties. Keith explains‌

T

HE aims of the club are to bring together photography enthusiasts in the county and surrounding areas, to organise regular photography trips to places of photographic interest, to provide a forum for sharing ideas and to help members make money from their photography. From time to time we will organise photographic workshops to help members with varying levels of experience to improve their photographic skills, including the use of processing software such as Photoshop and Lightroom. If members have areas that they would like to be covered, we encourage them to let us know. We are also organising events thought the year; the first event was a presentation by a member about his trip to Finland and Iceland. Due to the popularity of the evening, we have decided to organise a trip to Finland for 2017 to photograph the Northern Lights. Other events have included a portrait workshop in a photographic studio in Oakham. More events are being planned for the remainder of the year - information about these and the club can be found on our Facebook page: F-Stop Photography Rutland. You can also email: fstoprutland@yahoo.co.uk to contact Keith and Jamie for further information. Whether you have just bought a camera or have many years’ experience, you are very welcome to come along.

Regenlite The Skin Miracle

Catherine Varney is invited to try out one of the latest laser treatments for problem skin

A

LWAYS on the lookout for something new in the world of health and beauty, I was excited to try the Regenlite facial treatment at Naomi Nails and Beauty in Market Harborough. A quick bit of research on the Regenlite website beforehand (www.chromogenex.com) revealed some amazing ‘before and after’ photos and happy customer testimonials extolling the virtues of this treatment for skin conditions such as rosacea, acne, port wine stains and spider veins. Being fortunate enough not to suffer these conditions, I wondered exactly what this laser treatment could do for me. Quite a lot it seems – it’s reportedly excellent for skin rejuvenation, resulting in younger looking skin with fewer wrinkles and improved skin elasticity. And let’s face it, as I’m approaching my 40th birthday, I need all the help I can get in this area. After I’d filled in a very comprehensive medical questionnaire, my therapist, Natasha explained the process to me: “The laser emits a Smartpulse light from a handheld device moved across the skin. It has different treatment modes depending on what skin condition you need it for. It’s effective at reducing the bacteria and inflammation in the

12

BEFORE

AFTER

AFTER

case of acne and if you’re treating vascular lesions, we use a higher energy beam to destroy only the affected blood vessels, leaving healthy skin unharmed. For skin rejuvenation purposes, the laser delivers low fluency yellow light which stimulates the skin’s natural response to produce collagen.” Natasha then prepped my skin for the treatment – cleansing, exfoliating and then applying a 10% salicylic acid peel to my skin which removed dead skin cells and thoroughly cleaned it. This felt hot and tingly but no more than that and was removed very swiftly after it had been applied. She then used the laser to find the ‘blue response’ on my skin which was an indication of how strong the laser needed to be to achieve optimum results. The first two attempts with the laser felt warm and slightly tingly – wonderful, I can cope with this, no problem. However, my skin had other ideas and needed a stronger, more intense light to achieve the best results for my fine lines and wrinkles. Natasha started on my forehead and moved the laser slowly across, emitting pulses of light which felt like tiny little shocks going across my skin. I’m not going to lie – there were a few ‘clench your teeth’ moments when the laser was going over particularly bony areas such as my nose and in fact I asked her to reduce the intensity slightly for my eye area as I thought I would find it too uncomfortable. And ultimately that’s the best way to look at it – I did feel a

certain level of discomfort but it was all over fairly quickly – and as they say: no pain, no gain, ladies! There were some pink areas on my skin afterwards; a combination of the peel and the laser, but on the whole, I was happy to leave the salon make-up free; which was just as well because Natasha advised no make-up for at least 8 hours. She also said my skin would be particularly dry so it would easily absorb a rich night cream that evening, further improving the condition. Best results are achieved with a course of three treatments over a period of 6 weeks to 3 months (depending on skin condition) and then a yearly top up – so after the initial treatments, it’s a very low maintenance way to keep your skin looking great. Three treatments cost £450 but if you have regular monthly facials, you could easily spend this in a year and not get anywhere near the same results as you can with the Regenlite. Natasha took a before photo so she can compare this to the photo at the end of the 90 days – she told me that clients are often shocked at the difference, both for visible skin conditions as well as the anti-ageing option. The verdict? I waited a few days posttreatment to give my skin a chance to settle and assess the condition. The first thing that struck me was the reduction in size of my pores – an added bonus I hadn’t been expecting. The crows feet at the corner of my eyes have disappeared and whilst I still have a few faint lines underneath my eyes, these are definitely reduced – seriously impressive for a first treatment. Overall, my skin looks ‘better’ – fresher , clearer and softer; definitely worth enduring the 30 minute treatment in my eyes! • Naomi Nails and Beauty, 14-16 Manor Walk, Market Harborough, LE16 9BP, Tel: 01858 657001, www.naominailsbeauty.co.uk

Health and Beauty News Catherine Varney looks at the latest treatments and offers for spring...

FRESH, NEW SKIN:

Ellique, the fabulously friendly beauty salon in Oakham has a fantastic offer for March – a Decleor Radiance Reviver facial for half price (£15 instead of £30) which represents an incredible saving. Julianne told me: “This is one of our most popular facials and would make a great Mother’s Day gift as well as a treat for yourself. It’s perfect if you have dull, dry or stressed skin as it works to exfoliate, rejuvenate and revive the skins’ texture; improving moisture levels and luminosity, restoring that youthful glow.”

Jessica nailcare, waxing, microdermabrasion, electrolysis, holistic therapies including hopi ear candles, reflexology, Indian head massage and aromatherapy as well as facials.” Nicola uses UK-based brand Katherine Daniels as she has achieved some fantastic results for her clients with their products over the years: “The products are designed specifically for the British climate so seem to know instinctively what our skin needs. The active ingredients are from plant, marine, collagen and biotechnology sources, making them really lovely and natural – ideal for even sensitive skins.”

NO TIME TO WASTE:

LOVELY LASHES:

Short on time but still feel in need of some TLC? Then Jo Haywood at ReNu Beauty in Melton Mowbray offers some great Express treatments to have you feeling refreshed in no time – and with sandal season almost upon us, get a head start on unsightly cracked heels with the 25 minute Heal Appeal treatment. This simple yet powerful and potent treatment tackles sore, cracked and unsightly heals and is a bit of a bargain too at just £19. Add a 20 minute file and polish for £10 and your feet will be the envy of all your friends this summer – and your bank manager will be happy too!

NEW SALON ON THE BLOCK:

Nicola Harrold has been a qualified beauty therapist for almost 20 years and in the last few months has been delighted to open her own salon ‘The Body and Beauty Studio’, from the beautiful surroundings of her home in Langham. Nicola told me what her clients can expect: “I offer a whole range of treatments including manicures and pedicures with

14

Natalie Dams runs her beauty salon from the Oliver Lee Hair salon in Stamford and has a fantastic March offer on LVL lashes which are an alternative to lash extensions. The treatment works by using a straightening solution at the root to add lift to make them appear longer plus a lash tint making them appear more visible and thicker. Results are very impressive and can last between 6 and 10 weeks. And throughout March, Natalie is offering them at the reduced price of £40, instead of the usual £55 (a patch test is required).

GENTLE HEALTH RESTORATION:

When it comes to your health, it is sensible to take a holistic approach to improve your overall mental and physical well-being. Dot Clowes is a qualified Bowen Therapist and offers this gentle, relaxing therapy from the peaceful surroundings of her clinic in Illston on the Hill. The Bowen technique can help with a multitude of health problems and is a gentle and relaxing hands-on therapy in which the therapist uses

only light pressure to make a series of rolling moves over muscles, tendons, and soft tissue at precise points. It helps increase blood and lymphatic circulation and release energy stored in the body. The moves produce good results by penetrating deeply into the tissues making use of the body’s ability to heal itself.

THE GIFT OF YOUTH:

For a fresh approach to turning back the clock, pay a visit to the Chaelis Clinic in Kettering. Here they offer the latest non-surgical facelift treatment, 3D Skin-Med. This innovative treatment uses ultrasound, radio frequency and the body’s natural healing process to lift, tone and tighten loose skin. The ultrasound focuses energy to stimulate the deep support layers of the skin, stimulating the growth of new collagen resulting in lifted, firmer skin and a more toned appearance over time.

Moores getting better prices for local people by taking properties to London. WHY HOME BUYERS ARE MOVING TO RUTLAND, STAMFORD AND THE VALE OF BELVOIR...

M

oores Estate Agency have offices in London, Oakham, Stamford, Melton, Uppingham, and the London platform at Grantham Railway Station with more platform offices poised to open this year. Covering five key towns, seven hundred villages and seven hundred square miles across the region, it’s not surprising that Moores are the agent of choice for local people as well being at the forefront of promoting Rutland and Stamford as perfect choices for thousands of buyers in London and the South East. With March and April the most popular months for buying and selling houses, Managing Director, Vernon Moore explains why his team lead the property pack.

Is the housing market in good shape this spring? 2016 is shaping up to be a boom year for us with 70% of our buyers moving here from outside the region thanks to our creative marketing strategies. We have a strong partnership with Douglas & Gordon – one of London’s largest independent estate agents – which means we have a direct link with buyers looking for rural properties of all kinds and a very powerful message to convey. It’s a fact that for every mile travelled either out of Kings Cross or up the A1, house prices are reduced by a massive average of £12,400. Thanks to our towns doing so well in ‘Best Place to Live’ polls, that message is filtering through fast and we are doing all we can to make sure potential buyers are in no doubt about the fantastic lifestyle opportunities in this region including great transport links and superb education. As well as having offices in all the key towns, your railway platform presence is growing – how did the idea come about? I spend a fair amount of time travelling by rail myself and realised that we can directly reach thousands of commuters as they wait for their trains. The Grantham office is situated on the London platform and is designed to introduce commuters to this area and show them what kind of property they could purchase should they decide to

*HOUSE PRICES ARE AS PER FEBRUARY 2016. BASED ON 4 BEDROOM HOME OF APPROXIMATELY 1400 Sq Ft

relocate outside the capital. Inspired by how international retailers operate at Kings Cross, the platform office has a coffee bar feel and free Wi-Fi making it easy for commuters to acquire information to browse further once their journey is underway. Already a great success, the office is proving a rich source of new buyers for our clients and we are planning to roll out similar offices on other carefully selected platforms this year. Well known for cutting edge innovation, how important is ‘traditional’ agency at Moores? Customer service is more important than ever to us. More and more clients are losing heart in property searches on the internet which are often fruitless. Our clients can rely on a complete package of service which involves the exclusive care of one of our team twenty four hours a day, seven days a week as well as the full attention of one of the three directors who oversee all valuations, negotiations and sales. We provide a bespoke property search service plus a discreet sales package – in fact, 30% of our January

sales took place without boards, marketed directly to waiting buyers. Nationally the average fall through rate on sales is one in three; at Moores that figure is around one in ten – how do you manage such a high success rate? We believe it’s not all about getting a sale – it has to be the right sale to the right client at the right time as well as securing the basics such as making sure funding is in place and buyers are ready to proceed. All our clients receive the same level of care and attention and that approach works for us. Last word? If you are considering a move, get in touch with us now for free, no obligation advice. We are showing properties next month at the Country Life ‘Move to the Country’ Show and your home could be part of our portfolio. We very much look forward to being of service. Contact: The team at Moores are delighted to offer valuations and advice on all aspects of buying, selling and letting property. SNIK: Unmasked Stamford-based stencil artists Snik – real names Nik and Laura – create stunning works of art that grace the walls of a growing list of international clients. And walls, as they reveal, are both their inspiration and their canvas...

T

HE next time you walk past a wall, stop and think. It may soon be the temporary location of something altogether more beautiful than a bunch of cobwebs and some badly daubed graffiti. Snik emerged from the underground world of urban art and are now enjoying the limelight as trailblazers for a new breed of artists, intent on highlighting fresh creative processes and challenging perceptions. Their work is being snapped up by all kinds of people, including Nottingham’s celebrated 2 Michelin-starred chef Sat Bains, and collectors worldwide. Says Nik: “A lot of traditional art galleries turn their noses up at street art. Landscapes and animal portraiture, done in traditional mediums, tend to be the norm in many places, and it’s always been a battle to get past that prejudice. It’s probably why we get more readily accepted in places like London and Berlin and other big cities across the world.” “We were inspired by traditional graffiti writers and their attitude of putting out free art on walls. The work didn’t need to be hanging in a gallery to be seen. The whole point of street art was making it accessible; it broke down barriers and made it easier for people to absorb and appreciate it.” “But you can’t get a decent wall in some places now,” he reflects. “It’s the general rule of gentrification. You paint in a run-down area, where people have stopped caring about it, and then when you finish people go and look, and the property values start to go up. Eventually it pushes the people out that made it what it was.”

18

PIONEERING SPIRIT “We are always trying to push our techniques,” say Nik. “Every piece we do has to be better than the last. Stencils have always had a bit of a bad reputation because they are seen as an easy way to create a big image. People criticise saying it’s not painting because we are not using freehand skills, but there is more to it that that. You need to get past the stigma and that is part of our reasoning. There is an art in cutting and an art in the delivery – the painting. We put hundreds of hours into our pieces.”

When asked to give advice to young artists Nik is clear: “Just keep practising. We are selftaught and started out with an exacto knife and ten cans of car paint from Wilko, but now we use over 500 colours and shades from an international supplier. As we work harder, we get better; we never stop pushing. “We went to Miami in December to paint a 10-metre wall, and we are having a solo show in Paris this June. Every time we show in a different country that, for us, is a personal success. It shows how far we can reach. There’s a lot you can do with art and if your work is good people will notice. It’s that simple. Just get out there and paint.” • To find out more about SNIK and their work, check out their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/snikarts, or on Instagram & Twitter @snikarts. The Berkeley Arms, Wymondham Six years on Louise and Neil Hitchen continue to wow customers and judges alike. For the 5th year running, The Berkeley Arms has received a Michelin Bib Gourmand for good cooking at moderate prices. And we can see why. Abigail Richardson and Janie Johnson Crossfield enjoy a not so ‘lite lunch’ at one of our favourite pubs PHOTOS: JANIE JOHNSON CROSSFIELD

I

N order to thank loyal friend and neighbour (what would I do without her?), I took Janie for a girls’ lunch. I had heard rumours that Louise and Neil were moving to Oakham, sadly not, but the 6 mile drive is no hardship when one knows what is waiting at the other end. I had already informed Janie of the Berkeley Arm’s signature dish – fish and chips, and so her decision was made prior to arrival…..But I managed to persuade her into sharing a starter and a pud – well, all in aid of a good cause! We opted for the twice baked cheese soufflé – incredible – light and fluffy, “not to cheesy” (that wouldn’t have bothered me), mouth-watering and huge! Having had Hambleton bread as an appetiser, we were beaten. I would not make that mistake again and in fact the soufflé would happily serve as a main, possibly with a side salad - what value for money that would be, Monsieur Gourmand. My main was the Pan seared scallops, cauliflower puree with pancetta and breadcrumbs – and a side of chips please? Again, beaten but what

incredible flavours and texture. I adore scallops and find they can often be over cooked. Not the case here. I didn’t need the chips, particularly as Janie left most of hers (even though they are the fattest, crispiest and most delectable of pleasures) as her fish was also incredibly generous. Janie would have preferred crispier batter but thought the quality and cooking of the fish to be outstanding. The dessert was a masterpiece, both visually and gastronomically – Dark chocolate mousse with coffee cream, honeycomb, white chocolate ice-cream on a toffee crumb. Again vast but Louise assure me that ladies half our stature (what was she implying?) easily manage 3 ‘full’ courses. Janie would have preferred the cream on the side and Louise understood why this would suit bonafide chocolate lovers…I was happy either way. I would definitely recommend this as a sharing dessert – and all for £6.50! • Currently offering the lunch for less (2 courses for £12.95 – add a 3rd course for £4), there really is no reason not to book. But book you must, Tel: 01572 787587. RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING MARCH 2016

Historic Melton Mowbray Cinema’s Young Owners add a Modern Touch to Bring Film Fans Flocking The Regal Cinema at Melton Mowbray is carving a reputation for itself as a destination picturehouse. Film fans are flocking to the luxury boutique venue, which sells tickets for comfy two-seater sofas and offers home-made cakes in a building which dates back to the halcyon cinematic days of the 1930s. Nick Rennie went along to meet the cinema’s owners, young couple Membership: Jacob and Bryony Mundin Costs (per year)

N

IGHTS out at the movies at the chain multiplexes are very much the same wherever you are in the UK as customers are rushed in and out of screen rooms which all look the same and which can often feel pretty soul-less. But that’s most certainly not the case with The Regal Cinema in Melton Mowbray, where film fans can choose to relax on two-seater sofas or luxury soft seats in a building full of character which dates back to the 1930s. Home-made cakes are served in reception, as an option to the traditional fare of popcorn and ‘pick and mix’, and there is also the option to take hot drinks or something alcoholic into the movie with cup-holders on every seat. Customer service is clearly high up on the list of priorities for owners Jacob and Bryony Mundin, who rescued the old picturehouse from closure three years ago this month (March). Thousands of people have signed up as members thanks to the drive and innovation of the young couple, who are both aged just 25. Jacob said: “It wasn’t easy at the start. Our members tend to be older, 50 and above, and we had to convince them as a couple in our early 20s that we could run a cinema. Before we opened we had already signed up 1,000 members so there was a lot of pressure to give them what they wanted. We have managed to do that, though, and people stop us in the street now to tell us how much they enjoy coming along.” Integral to the success of the The Regal Cinema is the friendly feel of the place. It’s intimate and homely, as well as being incredibly comfortable for patrons. Particularly popular are the five sofas which are each named after cinematic legends – Beauty and the Beast, Bosom Buddies, Bonnie and Clyde, Danny and Sandy (Grease) plus Mr Darcy and Mrs Bennett. “We’ve also got 16 luxury seats at the back and 84 standard seats at the front and these are a big improvement on what was there before,” said Jacob. “The old cinema used to have 216 seats but we’ve halved that number and also taken the wall out at the back so customers now have double the leg room.” Movies have been shown in the building for 80 years but that proud history almost came to an end in April 2012 with the death of dedicated previous owner John Merryweather. His family kept the cinema going for a couple of months before deciding they could no longer continue. A campaign was launched to reopen one of the town’s most popular assets but it remained closed for nine months until the Mundins took it over. Jacob and Bryony

were no strangers to working in a picture house as both had been employed since they were teenagers at his mother Amanda’s small independent cinema in Derbyshire, called The Ritz. His brother Louis has also just started running one in the north of England. Bryony said: “It’s great when we all get together because we all run cinemas and we have plenty to talk about.” The couple have now signed up 2,600 members. They all enjoy discounts on tickets and a brochure of upcoming movies sent to them before the general public are told. Around 46,000 people came through the doors in their first year and estimates indicate they have increased that by 10,000 in the last year. Jacob said: “We show films three or four weeks after they are on general release which means we are not committed to showing them for long runs. “We can mix up our films during the

week and that is the only way a small cinema like ours can survive.” There are always healthy attendances for the Silver Screen offerings for over-50s, which are shown on Tuesday afternoons to coincide with the hugely popular weekly street and cattle markets in Melton. Regal customers don’t just have films to choose from. Live screenings of West End theatre shows, operas, ballets and even pop concerts all regularly sell out. The couple work long hours, Jacob on mainly front-of-house duties and Bryony as the projectionist, which involves working with digital files as opposed to the 35mm film spools of yesteryear. They have to juggle their cinema commitments with looking after 18-monthold son, Milo, and Bryony is expecting their second child next month (April). She added: “It’s very exciting running your own cinema. It’s hard work but we really enjoy it.”

DESI G N SOL U TI O N S

Window Dressing A well-dressed window, with the practical reasons of privacy and keeping the heat indoors - pulls together the visual aesthetic of your interior. Curtains add colour, texture and warmth, blinds contribute structure and when used together create a most attractive window treatment. Nicola Hardy talks to two of Rutland’s busiest independent curtain makers for advice WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING YOUR WINDOW TREATMENTS - MARY BARREAU ADVISES:

Shutters offer an elegant, simple and effective solution to any room - they reinforce security, keep heat in as well as controlling levels of light within the room. Rutland Shutters are design and fit specialists, providing excellent service and competitive prices.

1. The period of the house and the style of the furniture, the colours in the room and the required functionality for the curtains/blinds. 2. The space around the window, any existing poles or tracks, the amount of light in the room and whether there is a radiator underneath.

7. There are many different styles of curtain headers to consider - some will stack into a smaller area than others, some are more suited to poles rather than tracks, and not all fabrics are suited to all headers.

3. How different types of fabric will drape. A mixed composition gives the best finish - the man made percentage adds stability and therefore less creasing. 4. Think about blinds and the possibilities of combining them with curtains. This is a great look to coordinate fabrics. 5. If the window is offset on the wall, with less space on one side, a single curtain will suffice. Equally if the window feels too small for a pair of curtains, the best option would be a blind or a single curtain. 6. Is a Roman blind to go in the recess or above the window? Often dependent on light - a recess blind will block several inches over the glass, whereas on the outside the blind has more space to be dropped down to display more of the fabric without darkening the room. If your sill is used for display the blind would be better on the outside. 5 Day Blinds’ offer a fast and affordable service for made to measure blinds and curtains, within a 30 mile radius.

8. Tracks and poles come in a variety of designs and finishes and will need to be chosen to suit the curtains’ header style. Bay windows need much discussion. A good metal track bent to order or a bay pole, if the latter, discuss the brackets and passing rings. Do you take the curtains around the bay only or add an extra reverse bend to sit the fabric against the front wall to soften the corners? 9. Kitchens and bathrooms, unless prone to condensation and poor ventilation, perfectly suit cotton or linen fabric blinds not textures or overtly ornate fabrics. Rollers ,Visions or aluminium Venetians are always a good alternative for practicality and a simple look. 10. All aspects of child safety will be discussed with the client. New legislation means that all makers and fitters must comply with these rules. KINGFISHER CURTAINS Julie Brooks established Kingfisher Curtains 16 years ago after completing her training with a diploma in soft furnishings and training from Lady Caroline Wrey. Her style is to be involved right through from ‘conception to completion’ helping clients to conceive the best window dressing for each particular window and room, making the curtains right through to hanging and dressing them. “The value of having properly dressed curtains cannot be under estimated as they deliver the full effect of what was conceived in the first place,” comments Julie. All window treatments are hand-made to her exacting high standards, as is the tracking fitting service she offers. Having a professionally fitted track or pole is an important ingredient so that the finished, lovingly made curtains, hang properly. Julie also makes blinds and undertakes alterations, often remaking curtains to her high quality and precise standards. Kingfisher Curtains has a growing reputation via ‘word of mouth’ and rightly so too as customers come back to her time and again for everything from interlined curtains, pinch-pleat to puff-ball headings and pelmets with trimming or piping. Crowd Pleaser Laura Waltham and Peter Poli were introduced when they were teenagers and have been together ever since. Peter proposed during a romantic springtime picnic in the beautiful Burghley Park and after spending that summer enjoying their engagement, the couple began to plan. Laura works in Media Sales and has event management experience but knew that her main challenge would be accommodating a large number of guests – the couple were determined to include all their cherished family and friends so the search began for a venue that could provide just the right setting for a really big day.

T

he Atmosphere… We wanted to create a very relaxed and informal wedding for everyone to enjoy and remember. With a hundred and seventy guests during the day and another seventy joining us for the evening, Stapleford Park Country House Hotel fitted the bill perfectly in terms of all the space we needed as well as a stunning setting and superb advice from Shanine, their Wedding Planner. After a traditional ceremony in church, a vintage jaguar took us to our reception where guests enjoyed champagne and canapés on the lawn before our wedding breakfast. Unlike many grooms, Peter relished the opportunity to make a speech along with heartfelt speeches from the best man Luke and my Dad. The Look… Elegant, understated chic is my favourite style and although I thought I had found the dress I wanted, on a visit to Surrey I tried on an Enzoani gown on the advice of the shop manager and found I loved it even more! It was a perfect fit and everything about it was just right. I chose a full length veil, a vintage inspired hair clip and – of course – a gorgeous pair of Jimmy Choos. My bridesmaids wore oyster grey cocktail length dresses by Vera Wang – a look inspired by bridesmaids in a TV drama I had remembered. Peter indulged his love of iconic style and looked fantastic in a Vivienne Westwood suit, the groomsmen wore Ted Baker. The Details… In keeping with our grey and pink colour scheme, my bouquet was inspired by the brilliant Rebecca at Pollen Designs. She advised a classic look as I am small, to avoid looking overpowered. Our cake was five tiers of different flavoured sponge and was served throughout the evening. Peter’s dad surprised us with a traditional Italian wedding cake as well as four hundred handmade pastries so there was no shortage of sweet treats. Georgi Mabee took phenomenal photos striking the perfect balance with nothing forced or too formal. At the very last minute we opted for a video and I am so glad we did. James Barlow entertained during the evening with a swing style set and also DJ’d for us. Our tip for couples planning their day….. Take your time and if you start to feel overpowered by arrangements take a step back and have a week’s break from planning.

Personal Touches: A toastmaster during the day helps keep things rolling with a large number of guests. Weaver UK Ltd I

called David Weaver from Weaver Ltd to rescue my beautiful Travertine stone floor which looked dull with the grout lines a dark grey colour. Other issues I wanted David to deal with were scratches and a number of little holes that were appearing in the stone. Firstly, David used a Diamond lapping process to remove the thinnest layer of the Travertine surface to smooth out all but the deepest scratches. This makes the stone look very white but David assured me the cleaning and reseal will bring the colour back to its original honey and caramel colour. Being a porous soft stone, Travertine is prone to have little holes in it which can chip away over time and wear and tear. To prevent the holes getting any bigger, a colour matched epoxy filling was put into each of the holes, which helps strengthen the stone. This needed 24 hours to dry out completely. On the second day, David and his wife Mel came and took out the kick boards to the kitchen cabinets and sealed them and all the walls with a plastic sheet to prevent any dirt and spray from the cleaning process reaching them. The floor was then swept and vacuumed and the cleaning process started. Unfortunately on my floor, it was apparent that some of the soil on the floor had been trapped by an additional seal coating placed upon a dirty floor, which had obviously been done by previous owners to

Sosennah Every asks David Weaver, local carpet and upholstery specialist, for a little help

save money. So David had to strip the floor of the previous seal, and then clean it with a high pressure rinse, bringing the floor back to its natural condition. The final process once the floor was dry was to reseal the floor to prevent stains from cooking fat, red wine, coffee and many other acidic spillages going into the floor. David used a high quality seal and once this was dry used a buffer to bring up the shine. The drying process can take a long time depending on the porous nature of your stone and also the weather. It is best to do this in good weather when you can allow for plenty of ventilation. David told me that the worst thing I could do was to wet mop the floor as the dirty water ends up spreading into all the little holes and grout lines, making it look dirtier. He suggested using a micro fibre pad with a specific stone floor cleaner spray and all I needed to do was a few squirts, wipe the pad over which picks up the dirt rather than spreading it around and volià a clean floor! The pad then goes in the washing machine for when you next need it. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend David and Mel, who worked incredibly hard and efficiently and left everything tidy. They also do curtain cleaning on site and carpet cleaning too.

UPDATES Banish Limescale and Protect Your Home D

id you know that limescale can result in an untold amount of damage to your home and that more than 13 million households in the UK have hard water that causes limescale? Households in the Rutland and Market Harborough area are no exception. Ian Morgan explains… “In one year, an average family of four will generate around 70kg of scale. Having soft water running through your home will affect more of your life than arguably any other household product. Softened water will bring you and your family many benefits in day to day life:

Bathe in luxury If you have never experienced the luxury of bathing in soft water, you need to find out! Your skin will instantly feel like its moisturised and silky smooth and can significantly help those who suffer from dry skin conditions such as eczema. You’ll also need to use a fraction of the amount of bubble bath, shampoos and conditioners too.

Save time cleaning Spray-on limescale removers are only a short-term fix for limescale and don’t tackle the cause; hard water. Save hours cleaning and discover the only long-term solution for limescale, installing a water softener. Soft water will lovingly care for your kitchen and bathroom giving you sparkling taps, free-flowing showers and smudge-free worktops.

Brighter, softer clothes Detergents don’t lather as well in hard water so you need to use almost triple the amount than with soft water. This can take its toll on your clothes and towels! A normal washing cycle struggles to rinse out all the detergent so clothes fibres become clogged with hard water scum making them look dull and feel scratchy. Popular washing brands actually recommend using up to 50% less washing detergent if you have soft water.

Prolong the life of your appliances Many invest in appliances for their home but are unaware that hard water could be causing daily and costly damage. Appliances such as washing machine, dishwasher, boiler and heating system will all suffer from the costly consequences of hard water, and limescale build-up significantly reduces their efficiency.

Save money Heating your home is expensive enough with rising energy bills, but limescale could be

HARBOROUGH HAPPENINGS What’s new in Market Harborough?

Songbirds –The All-Female Choir

Did you know that singing exercises your heart and lungs, releases endorphins, helps to lower blood pressure and boost your immune system?

S

ongbirds is an all-female choir that has been running for just over six years. Although based in Market Harborough it attracts members from a wide area. It meets once a week (except for the summer break) at Farndon Fields Academy. The choir covers a variety of music styles including contemporary and classic pop songs, musicals, classical, folk and gospel. Lynette Lewington explains, “So many people have horror stories of being put off communal singing from their school days; so many believe they can’t sing! However, many are surprised when they come to a Songbirds’ rehearsal to find that they can sing and how much they enjoy the experience. The good thing about being in a choir is that it’s all about the collective sound rather than individual voices, which is why Songbirds doesn’t audition – we believe that if you are enthusiastic, committed and have a positive attitude then your voice will blend in well. Neither do you need to be able to read music; many members can’t but always learn the songs just as well as those who can.” Songbirds aims to perform two concerts a year and the proceeds from these go to both local and national charities. Their recent Christmas

concert raised £500 each for Dementia Harborough and the local Air Ambulance Service. If you are female and aged 18 or over you are invited to join a rehearsal and find out what being in a choir is all about. • To register your interest or if you would like more information please contact Lynette on Tel: 07773171762 or by email llewington51@hotmail.com. he markets industry gathered recently in Birmingham for the National Association of British Market Authorities Great British Market Awards 2016, regarded by many as the jewel in the industry awards crown and Harborough Market came out on top. The 6 day market took the coveted title of ‘Britain’s Best Small Indoor Market 2016’ beating off stiff competition at the ceremony held in Birmingham Council House and attended by High Street and Markets Minister Marcus Jones MP. Since its re-opening in 2014, under the management of Market Place, Harborough Market Hall has fast secured its place in the heart of the community, representing hundreds of local independent businesses each week. Harborough District Council and the Market Manager Sairah Butt have worked together to ensure that the Market has made a significant and positive impact on the town and recently added two more trading days. The market now delivers a fantastic range of themed weekdays including a Vintage and Retro Market each Wednesday as well as the Craft Market on a Thursday and an Antiques Market 9am to 3pm. Sundays. Wendy Bromwich explains the ethos behind Rutland only Prep School

L

ooking for the right educational environment for your child can be quite a daunting task; no two schools are exactly the same and you are frequently comparing very different offerings. So how do you choose the one that is the best fit for your family? Appearances can be deceptive and it pays to look beyond the impressive, tree-lined drive and imposing entrance hall; focus on the children. It is often the little things that make all the difference. At Brooke Priory School in Oakham you are guaranteed a smile as happy boys and girls go about their daily business, confident in the knowledge that they come first. Wherever you cast your gaze you will see examples of the children’s work and overt celebrations of their successes: serious accolades such as scholarships to senior schools sit comfortably next to an award for being respectful. Every aspect of endeavour and achievement is highlighted, which means that every pupil has the chance to get a mention. Even the shyest personality becomes comfortable in the limelight. Headmistress, Elizabeth Bell, is ‘passionate that every child is given the opportunity to take centre stage, whether in a thespian sense in their modern theatre or by being recognised as outstanding in some other way.’ Confidence is the key to success, dovetail that with the Brooke’s ‘can do’ attitude and you have a recipe for rewards without any sense of pressure. ‘Childhood should be savoured,’ enthuses Elizabeth Bell ‘I want the children to put on their tractorsuits and enjoy digging in the mud, or archaeology as we like to call it!’ They love their regular Welly Days at the Priory in the village of Brooke, the school’s original site that is now used as a satellite rural iclassroom, where every area of the curriculum comes to life. Parents play a valuable role at Brooke Priory too and the Friends work closely with the staff to create the very best environment for their children. • For further information logo to: www.brooke.rutland.sch.uk

Oakham’s Musicians Win National Recognition

O

akham School’s talented musicians have won places in two of the biggest national youth choral competitions. The Chamber Choir have reached the semi-finals of the BBC Songs of Praise School Choir of the Year 2016 competition, and the finals of the Barnardos’ National Choral Competition! “To be selected for both of these national competitions is a testimony to the outstanding quality of music at Oakham,” says Director of Music, Peter Davis. “It is a huge accolade to be recognised as one of the best six senior school choirs in the country in both of these prestigious competitions.” Music is an integral part of life at Oakham with around half of the School participating in choirs, bands, orchestras or musical theatre. An impressive 40% of Oakham pupils learn a musical instrument and there are at least 20 different ensembles that take place each week. There are also over 130 singers who study with one of the school’s five singing teachers, and the Chamber Choir is a collection of the most talented singers. There is an extensive programme of over 80 concerts, large and small, in local regional and national venues – indeed, the Chamber Choir have just returned from participating in the annual Brandenburg Choral Festival in London, for the second year running (as one of very few schools in the country). Rutlanders are welcome to enjoy the talents of Oakham’s musicians by joining us at one of our free weekly ‘Music at Lunchtime’ concerts, which take place every Wednesday in term-time, at 1.30pm in All Saint’s Church Oakham.

“T

he Pugin architecture, 90 acres of heritage parkland and incredible facilities are the perfect theatre of dreams for children to be enthusiastic, energised and inquisitive learners and, in amongst all the fun and bustle of life in a rural prep school, serious work also gets done”, explains Emily Rycroft, Communications Director. “With the best specialist teachers, amazing facilities and some of the smallest class sizes in the area, BG is where children truly fulfil their potential, grow their confidence and unlock their talents: our broad curriculum allows us to inspire our pupils and instil in them outstanding learning habits. Design Technology and Science are taught by specialists in fully-equipped labs. Top musicians provide specialist tuition and children can take part in a range of choirs and instrumental ensembles as well as drama productions in our fully equipped theatre. Swimming is taught in our 25m indoor pool; Mandarin and Japanese are taught by native speaking teachers. Children engage in further sports like horse riding and golf as well as adventurous training like Cubs and Brownies in our woodlands and beyond. But Bilton Grange is more than just a school, it is a vibrant community. Parents pop in and

A Home from Home Welcoming an overseas student into your home can be a very rewarding experience.

E

very year, thousands of overseas students are educated at independent schools across the UK. When their school closes for half term holidays and exeat weekends throughout the academic year, they need a great host family who will provide a home away from home. Pippa’s Guardians has been providing high quality Guardianship services to international students for over 18 years. A family run company, they understand the value of a good home and how a host family can positively impact on a student’s wellbeing. Pippa’s Guardians know their students well and match them with well-suited families. As well as receiving a generous allowance, there are many other advantages in being a host family. It is a great opportunity to introduce your family to other cultures and languages. Sharing your traditions and family life with an overseas student and knowing that you are helping them during their time in the UK is very gratifying. Long term friendships often develop and many host families keep in touch with the students and their families once they are back home. • If you feel you are able to offer a warm welcome to overseas students logon to: www.pippasguardians.co.uk or call Tel: 01684 252757

The Ultimate Welland Valley Walk If you do one long walk locally this year, this is it! And as the weather starts to improve, it’s time to get planning. If you’re not feeling up to the whole lot in one go, it can be split in two at Barrowden.

C

ATCH a bus or get a lift to the start-point in Uppingham and walk back along the Welland Valley, traversing a beautiful landscape of rolling meadows and riverscapes. This is a truly inspiring walk. UPPINGHAM TO SEATON (4.5 MILES) The walk starts in the Market Square at Uppingham. Walk along the High Street East and take the first right in a southerly direction; follow the public footpath to Lyddington, passing by the College Playing Fields; at the footpath ‘crossroads’ on the outskirts of Lyddington, take the right turn to visit the village. As you head back on the path towards Seaton, you will see on your right the fishponds constructed about 1320 to supply the palace. From here the path takes a straightforward route to Seaton. Lyddington refreshments: Marquess of Exeter (01572 822477) and The Old White Hart (01572 821703). Small shop and post office.

SEATON TO BARROWDEN (4 MILES) In Seaton, turn right at the George and Dragon pub, with the church on your right. Pass down a small path with (restored) workers’ cottages immediately on your right. As you enter the field you have a stunning view of the valley and Harringworth Viaduct. The Harringworth Viaduct was opened in 1878. To construct it, three thousand navvies dug clay from the Welland Valley floor, made twenty million bricks and built the 82-arch three-quarter mile viaduct in little more than two years. This task was done to clip fifteen minutes off the journey time from Nottingham to St Pancras. And we think we’re timeobsessed. The path crosses the disused railway line and then skirts to the left of a former mill before crossing a small bridge. Head across a field, under the arches and then over a stile onto the pavement leading into the village. Leave Harringworth on the road east. After a couple of hundred yards there is a path on the left which crosses a field to the river. Follow this track to Barrowden, crossing The Turtle Bridge at the half-way point and then tracking alongside the south side of the disused railway line, crossing over to the northern side, heading northeast across a field and entering Barrowden on the west side. Refreshments: George and Dragon at Seaton (01572 747773); the White Swan Hotel at Harringworth (01572 747773). At the time of writing the White Swan is temporarily closed, so please check first. BARROWDEN TO GEESTON (5 MILES) The Village Green at Barrowden with its duck pond makes the perfect lunch or picnic stop, since you have by now done about half the walk. It would also be a good start-point if you

want to split the walk into two. From The Green, follow the road east. After a couple of hundred yards, there is a tiny fork right; take this and in a few yards the path goes to the left, crossing the meadows towards Wakerley Bridge. At the bridge turn back left up the road and after 300 yards take a footpath right which leads back towards the river. The next stretch runs above the river and then through an ancient spinney. The path runs just north of St Luke’s Church, Tixover, a tiny church out on its on in the middle of a field. A service is held there once a month. Walk through Tixover, cross the busy A47 and head along the road to Tixover Grange. Opposite the entrance, a path heads across a field, crosses the road again and then follows a farm track toward Geeston (you are now on the Jurassic Way). Refreshments: Exeter Arms, Barrowden (01572 747247). Good pub grub, great location GEESTON TO STAMFORD (4 MILES) At Geeston, take the footpath which skirts behind the gardens of the houses on the southern side and at the road turn right and cross the historic Collyweston Bridge. About 100 yards after the bridge a path forks left up a field towards Easton. Once you have reached the top, you will join Ketton Drift, a mettled track and enter Easton. Pass a shop on your right (drinks, chocolate, plasters etc.) Turn left just past the Bluebell pub to the church (an early evening drink by mow perhaps?); immediately after the church there is a path to the right which takes you back to Stamford; from the second stile you have an excellent view of the town. You will eventually reach the Town Meadows, where you can enjoy an ice-cream and a Welland rest.

With Great Power… Back in the summer of 2002 the Harborough Mail shocked its readers with news that Tungsten Batteries, one of the town’s landmark businesses, was about to close. Generations of local families had worked in its Latskill Street factory but rising costs and cheap imports had taken their inevitable economic toll. There’s a fascinating story behind how this famous name came into being - and it owes far more to paper than it does to power! Caroline Aston explores

B

ACK in the 1890s the company name was Haddon Caxton and was owned by Mr Walter Haddon. Historically, the Haddons hailed from Naseby and were farming stock with a penchant for christening their sons John. The John Hadden who was born in 1784 had little taste for the land but ‘was noted for his literary tastes although it was as a business man that he made his mark’. Apprenticed to a local printer at 15, young John was an ambitious lad: just a year later he set off for London to make his fortune and for once the dream came true. In 1814 he founded his own printing business, making a lot of money printing Baptist missionary literature, a cause his father was greatly interested in. The growing number of foreign missions to far-flung lands proved profitable: Mr Haddon set up a general commissioning agency for printed materials which soon had a worldwide clientele. He died in 1855, by then the head of an appreciable printing empire, and was succeeded in the business by yet another John Hadden. Born in 1823 and apprenticed to the trade this John showed a sad lack of interest in moving things forward. In fact he took his eye off the commercial ball to the

60

extent that things began to slide badly: his interests lay far more in philanthropy, religion, music and gardening. Perhaps the latter owed something to his agricultural ancestors but it was decidedly fortuitous when his cousin Walter Haddon went into partnership with him in 1888. John was very much a sleeping partner and in 1890 Walter became sole owner. He was the total opposite of his rather airy-fairy cousin: brash, assertive and go-ahead, he had just three workers on the payroll when he took over but ten years later an incredible 1500 or more hands were working at the Haddon Caxton factory he’d established in Market Harborough where production costs were lower than London. The works produced copious amounts of lead printing type which fed the family printing and advertising business but also branched out into making the brass rules that divided lines of type, had a pump division and also a woodworking department producing storage for printing supplies and sundries for print shops. The impressive Caxton Type Foundry occupied a site of over two and a half acres and prospered under Walter’s bullish leadership.

A born entrepreneur Walter embraced every new development in marketing- he studied direct marketing strategies, introduced mail order for his products and established a successful advertising agency. He was not always appreciated by his peers: he was a loud and persistent advocate of adopting standardised type size, based on an American model, something that printing die-hards didn’t particularly favour. But Walter travelled Britain and the Continent, preaching his own gospel of print progress... and stressing, of course, the superiority of Caxton type! As the ‘British Printer’ journal said of him ‘...it will be accepted that the Haddon Foundry had the courage of its convictions and certainly did not mince matters... in replies to opponents’. Now, fate can often turn on something that seems totally insignificant and the generous person who gave Walter Haddon a new walking stick could have had no notion what he was starting. This stick, which rapidly became a favourite, was made of green-hearted wood so tough that it resisted nails and screws. This so took Walter’s fancy that he decided to use this tough stuff to make the blocks printers used for spacing. He registered the product name as ‘Tungstone’ because its toughness put him in mind of the metal tungsten and, if dropped in water, it sank like a stone! Where, you may be asking, do those batteries come in? The answer is a simple one. By the 1920’s there was a slump in the lead type making business and the company found it had to diversify to survive. Well-used to working with wood and lead they had the brainwave of moving into the production of wood-cased lead acid batteries, keeping their trustworthy name of ‘Tungstone’. And the batteries proved just as much a success as printing and its products had done in the past, their distinctive name a byword for reliability in home or industry. The name still lives on: though Tungstone Batteries closed 14 years ago its title was bought by Platinum Batteries in 2010. So there you have it - reams of information to spark your imagination at no charge from me!

I

love to hear from readers and I had two phone calls today – one from a lady wanting advice with what to do with a pre-loved piece of vintage furniture– I was glad to be able to suggest some local businesses whom I thought would be able to help.

Richard is also a ceramicist himself and has a new range of Raku pots on show. www.rutlandgallery.com Trent Galleries Oakham and Newark are excited to announce that one of the UK’s best-selling British artists Jennifer Hogwood, will visit Trent’s Newark Gallery on 11 March.

SNIK: Unmasked Stamford-based stencil artists Snik – real names Nik and Laura – create stunning works of art that grace the walls of a growing list of international clients. And walls, as they reveal, are both their inspiration and their canvas...

Stamford, UK

Finishing up their latest mural in Miami, Florida

Notting Hill, London

RE AL L I F E W E D D I N G

UPDATES

Save money Heating your home is expensive enough with rising energy bills, but limescale could be

egarty LLP is running a seminar in conjunction with Landmark IFA concerning the recent pension changes.

Sundays. Noticeboard Brooke Priory
