SCOUTS

Recently we invested 12 new Beavers into our colony and they have all been very busy with badge work towards their Chief Scout Award.

The Cub section has been trying new activities such as cooking over open fires and building shelters at the District Campsite at Colgate. They hoped the shelters would keep them dry and warm! At the time of Diwali they were learning about other religions and ready for Remembrance Day they spent an evening ironing their scarves and polishing their shoes to look smart on parade.

The Scout section has had a very busy year, after so much time on Zoom. The highlight being a 4 day camp that included a 10km hike, climbing wall, archery and zip line activities. They also took part in District organised activities including air rifle shooting, day hikes, orienteering and other local events. On quieter evenings they learned about signaling, knotting, pumpkin carving and enhanced their cookery skills with a curry for Diwali! Some of these take place in our hall and others at the Horsham District’s campsite at Colgate. You may have seen the Group’s presence recently with village litter picks and at the Gala Summer Fete.

Could you help us as a potential leader, an occasional helper, committee member or help with fund raising? Contact James at gsl1bbh@HORSHAMSCOUTS.COM

Broadbridge Heath Rainbows

We have continued this term by going on a town trail looking at the blue plaques around Horsham and designing one for Queen Elizabeth II. The rainbows enjoyed an evening of experiments; trying to get a ball of modelling clay to float, watching what happens when bicarbonate of soda and vinegar meet, trying to move a paper clip along a line with a magnet and discovering what happens when you cover a candle with a glass.

2nd Broadbridge Heath Guides

Our guide meetings have continued this term with a chip shop challenge around Horsham to find the best chips in town. We went to our campsite for an evening of shooting and games in the dark. The girls were challenged by a Ready Steady Cook evening and we finished October by carving pumpkins.

animals that served during the wars. We learnt that not only horses, dogs and pigeons served but also elephants, camels and mongoose played a part too. Here are some photos of the girls lining up ready to walk to the village cenotaph to lay our wreath.

FOOTBALL Broadbridge Heath Football Club

The first team are leading the way in the Southern Combination League Premier Division having lost just one league match so far this season. The home support this season has been really good.

The team also had a good run in the FA Vase having defeated Lewisham Borough, Erith & Belvedere and Whitchurch United but finally succumbed to Combined Counties Premier division leaders Ascot United bringing an end to our hopes of a trip to Wembley for another year.

Our Under 23 team's season has been hit hard by postponements with the team not having played a league game since mid-October. After a slow start the team started to put together some good performances and results to move up the table and when the weather improves they are well positioned to challenge the top teams.

It's very much a learning curve for our young Under 18 side this season, after 5 games the team has drawn two and lost three in the Southern Combination North Division but they are putting in some good performances against much older and stronger opposition, the future looks good.

At the halfway point in the league the Under 17 team who play their games in the South Surrey U18 League on Saturday mornings have played seven matches and have won three and drawn one, a good return considering the team is playing in a higher division than the team played in last season.

The Junior Section grows from strength to strength, running teams from Under 7 to Under 16, our biggest problem there is the lack of facilities and coaches, all too often we have to turn players away, something the club really dislikes doing.

Our Club Room, "The Venue", at Broadbridge Heath Football Club is an ideal location to hold local events within the village and we have appointed Helen Kowalkowski as our Community & Events Coordinator. If you have a party or function enquiry, then please give Helen a call Tel. 01403 283165 email helenkowalkowski@outlook.com To see what events on at the Venue please visit our website at www.thevenuehorshamuk.com/whats-on

Catch Up With The Broadbridge Bombshells WI

October is a good month to snuggle up and hunker down, the clocks go back and we start thinking about all things autumnal. It’s never easy to leave the warmth and comfort of home… except if you’re a Bombshell and you have a fun evening of pumpkin carving ahead. It is starting to feel like a Bombshells tradition to hold a pumpkin carving competition for our October meeting. I think this is our third one, and each year is better attended than the last, with more pumpkins and talent than you can shake a broomstick at!

This time round we also had a couple of seasonal treats to make us feel even more Autumnal and get us in the mood for some competitive carving. There was a delicious pumpkin pie to share baked by our talented treasurer Joan and a fantastic gin based fruity punch made by Fiona. Both went down very well indeed and seemed to enhance the creativity amongst us.

I wonder what they'd have though of a group of women carving pumpkins in Broadbridge Heath back in the dark ages... I'm guessing, if discovered, we'd probably have been tried as witches and been drowned in the local Ducky, unlike our winning pumpkin carver Miranda, who won a bottle of Prosecco. A much more favourable outcome!

Email our President Rowena for further information. Your first meeting is free!

==============================================================

It’s been a lovely summer and even though the days are now shorter and the weather colder and wetter, we won’t let that stop us enjoying ourselves.

We had a great day out at the races last month, and some of us even had a few little wins.

We saw the Chalk Garden at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre and already have tickets for another play this month.

Both our entries in the South of England show were prize winners this year. Mandy’s amazing crocheted ‘Packed Lunch’ and my rhubarb and ginger jam.

All of us are now feeling the effects of the cost of living crisis so we thought it would be a good idea to test some of our favourite foods against cheaper ones. Most of us tend to stick with the same brands, because we don’t think we’ll like a cheaper product and don’t want to waste our money.

So we set up a tasting challenge where everyone could compare their usual brand with a cheaper alternative, without knowing which was which. They then voted for the one they liked best. Wow! What an eye opener!

In lots of cases, people said they couldn’t taste much difference, (e.g. 10 votes for the big brand and 11 for the cheaper one). But for some things the difference was huge (e.g. 4 votes for a well known brand of crisps and 13 votes for the brand which costs 19p per packet less!)

And 19 out of 23 people preferred the cheapest Prosecco, at a saving of over £3.00 a bottle!

Our shopping basket only contained 10 everyday items (bread, butter, cheese, cereal, biscuits, etc) and one luxury item (Prosecco). The big brands shopping basket came to £31.17 but the cheaper equivalents came to £19.02 . So next time you go shopping, don’t be afraid to swap your favourites for cheaper brands and save some money.

I hope we’ll see you at the Christmas Craft Fair. We’ll have: cakes, crumbles, brownies, gingerbread, bread pudding, fudge and all your favourites, as well as a few plants. So come and say hello.

November

The Street Poppies were put up by Councillors and Chair, Terry Oliver joined the Remembrance Sunday Service, led by Reverend Mark Lavender, at St John’s Church. Cllr Oliver laid a wreath, on behalf of the community and the Parish Council, alongside other community groups.

A gifted tree from Horsham District Council has been planted in the green space near to Heydon Way, for The Queen’s Green Canopy. This was originally planned prior to the sad passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth.

Following the wishes of the patron, His Majesty The King, The Queen’s Green Canopy initiative has been extended to the end of March 2023.

The tree was kindly delivered and planted by ID Verde.

With the current cost of living crisis, the Parish Council were keen to look at measures to support the community. Working with Horsham Matters, during November we opened the office doors for our first Warm Space.

A few residents were welcomed by volunteers and offered complimentary soup, tea, coffee, and biscuits. We hope to continue the “Warm Welcome & Space” weekly please look out for the confirmed dates.

It is hoped the attendance will grow but please feel free to come along or help spread the word so that residents who may need it know about it. This is open for everyone in our community.

Defibrillator training was also held, facilitated by Southwater First Responders, attended by Councillors, Officers, and residents. PCSO Adrian Bell held the monthly Community Drop-in session at the office, in the evening after listening to resident feedback.

Please keep a look out for our Winter Newsletter which will be delivered to all households prior to Christmas.

We would like to take this opportunity to send warm wishes to everyone in our community this Christmas

MEET YOUR COUNCILLORS

Each month during

This month we hear from Councillor Debbie Lambert

I've been a parish councillor for over a year now. Time really does fly.

My first meeting was held, due to covid restrictions, in the church car park! We now have a lovely new community parish building where we hold our meetings. I was made to feel so welcome.

I have learnt so much, particularly about my local area and how much goes on behind the scenes in this last year, and still feel there is so much more I need to learn.

I had no previous local government experience. My career was spent working for an airline, latterly in Supplier Management. There is a real mix of skills and experience on the council, I really love the eclectic mix.

I would urge anyone locally who may be interested in becoming a councillor to contact the parish clerk.

We do have vacancies!! You would be most welcome.

BBHPC currently has Councillor Vacancies for Co-option

Councillors are elected to represent an individual geographical unit on the council, known as a ward or parish in Broadbridge Heath it is the entire parish.

They are generally elected by the public every four years, but there are currently 5 vacancies on the Parish Council open for Co-option.

If you would like any more information or have any questions please contact Lucinda, Clerk for more information.

2022 we will be introducing one of our Parish Councillors.

News

from your District Councilors for the village.

You may be aware that the DfE recently announced that there was no longer to be a new primary school in Wickhurst Green due to a lack of demand for places. We were very disappointed by this news and have been discussing with HDC and WSCC how the land, that had been set aside for the school, could be used in the hope that some of it will be retained for the community. We will update further when there is more detail on this.

The retrospective planning application for works to the land at Field Place came to the Planning North committee meeting last week. It was recommended for approval by officers but members, on balance, thought that further information on drainage and ecology was required, so the application was deferred until such information is made available. We supported this deferral and the issues residents have reported to us regarding vehicle movements and dust are at the forefront of our minds as we move forward with this.

The significant noise disturbance from Lower Broadbridge Farm continues to be a key priority for us. Impacted residents may be aware that an enforcement notice was served against one of the businesses operating from the farm for a failure to comply with the noise related conditions of their planning approval. The business has since submitted a new application, which has put the enforcement proceedings on hold. We met with the Chief Exec and Director of Place at HDC to stress the high levels of distress that are being caused by the current situation. They took this onboard and we hope to see the current application processed as quickly as possible so that we will hopefully see the enforcement of conditions back on course.

We were pleased to see that the ANPR cameras have at last been installed on the bus gate on the downgraded bypass along with all the relevant signage for the TRO to prohibit use of the road by HGVs. This has been a huge source of frustration to concerned residents and we hope that these measures will bring a significant improvement for drivers and pedestrians alike.

Finally, you may have seen that we recently announced that we won't be seeking re-election this May. It has been a real privilege to serve as your councilors since 2019 and this decision was not easily reached. Nothing will change in the short term as we will continue to work for the community. In May, when the whole District votes in the local council elections, you will be able to vote for two new District Councilors for the village.

As I write, we are preparing for the first ever (in this country) winter football world cup and so our Christmas preparations and celebrations may this year be interspersed with activities normally associated with the summer. (It may be that some of you are even planning a barbeque or two given the relatively warm weather we’ve been having?!) It got me thinking about the comparison between the game of football and faith. In many ways there are similarities and football has often been likened to a kind of religion.

When it became a spectator sport in the 19th century there was a national craving for a new ‘opiate of the masses’. Vast stadia were constructed so that ‘worshippers’ could gather in the hope of the experiential corporate high of a goal (or even a win!) and hymns were sung to the tunes originally heard in churches. Players are idolised (some are even called ‘God’ Paul McGrath for one; and in Argentina there is even a ‘church of Maradonna) and vast sacrifices of time and money are made in order to follow your team. When our team wins, we can feel euphoric and when they lose there is little to console us it is that personal. And throughout there is a desire to share the experience with others (to sing together and celebrate together).

And yet I want to suggest that although I love football it is a poor cousin to the real deal to a relationship with God. In my opinion, that inner craving for involvement in something greater than ourselves, a shared euphoric experience and deep satisfaction and joy can be satisfied and obtained at church! Being present with others and seeking God himself through prayer and worship beats winning a football match every time even the world cup. The purpose of church is not to go through the motions of liturgy and religious practice but to experience God, to receive his joy and strength, to hear his voice and know that he is near. And the Christmas season is the perfect time to reflect on that as we are reminded that God himself was so intent on a personal relationship with his creation that he became part of it in the person of Jesus Christ.

So, when you experience the inevitable highs and lows that will accompany this coming tournament (and Christmas!), remember that they are only temporary but if you want to experience joy that lasts give faith in God a go.

We begin December with the popular Duggie Dug Dug who will be hosting our Christmas Praise Bubble Party at the church on Friday 2nd December. The following Sunday (4th) will be our Nativity service and our carol service takes place a few hours after the world cup final on the evening of 18th December. Christingle takes place on Christmas Eve at 4pm (Saturday not Friday as previously advertised) and our Christmas Day service is at 10:30am.

I wish you all a very Happy Christmas. Mark

The Financial Fairy Godmother of Broadbridge Heath

Is this the right time for Annuities?

The answer will depend on your own circumstances, but it may be the right time to consider this if your pension is in drawdown. A Pension Annuity provides a taxable income payable for the rest of your life. With markets being so volatile, this might be causing a few sleepless nights for those taking income from drawdown. If this is the case it may be worth getting an annuity quote, even if only to rule it out as an option.

Some annuity rates have reached a 14 year high in 2022 following central bank base rate rises and the mini budget uncertainty. Annuity rates that would have bought an £8,000pa income in 2008 fell to less than £5,000 in 2016 but in October 2022 were back up over £7,000pa*.

We don’t know whether annuity rates will remain as attractive as they are now, or even improve further. The above examples are based on a level pension, but various options are available including guarantees.

With a guarantee, the annuity will pay out, whether you are dead or alive, for a predetermined time (usually either 5 or 10 years), but continues afterwards if you are still living. Often quotes show very little difference in the income when including a 5 or 10 year guarantee and this can be beneficial.

If you would like to see what annuity rates are available for you please pick up the phone today. We would always recommend that you take advice on annuity options, as once you have bought an annuity you will not be able to change it.

*Sharing Pension 31st October 2022 based on a 65-year old with a fund of £100,000, annuity rates at 15th October 2022 The content included on this page is based on our understanding of UK tax law at the time of publication. It may be subject to change and may not be applicable.
